Thinkpad lenovo x61s battery failure

Question: Thinkpad lenovo x61s battery failure

Hello!!I have had a ThinkPad Lenovo x61s for almost a year now, and although thebattery life has been decreasing sensibly in time, my battery was still workingup to yesterday. Here is what happened:I switched it on without plugging it to power and itwouldn't start, I fist thought thebattery was low so when I started it with the power on it worked ; the battery signal was red and flashing on the computer. The batterysign on the desktop showed "full at 88% on power, not charging"and whenever I unplug from power it directly switches off. The battery signalon the computer is constantly red and flashing. Please help if anybody has any idea on the failure of my battery and how Ican fix it?

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad lenovo x61s battery failure

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad lenovo x61s battery failure

Batteries are warrantied for one year, so run (don't walk) to your nearest Lenovo support center. Or call Lenovo. You can look up your exact warranty status on Lenovo's website.

Dears, I own a thinkpad x61s since 2009, that came with a 2200mah battery (I'm not sure about the capacity, but I guess it is the one that has the smalest capacity for x61x).Now that its lasting just 30 minutes on battery, I'm looking for a new one 8 cells battery to buy. When I was looking for it, I found out that the 8 cells battery needs an extra (small) spacer to match perfectly on x61s chassis. It's a kind of adapter.  My doubt is whats the part number of this adapter, and where I can buy it.  Thanks,

Answer:thinkpad x61s battery spacer

last time i bought the 8-cell-battery (about 1 year ago), the spacer was part of my order... well it is just a small piece of plastic ;-).

I recently installed Lenovo's latest (v. 2.42) Power Management patch and now it is behaving strangely.  After running on a full battery for less than an hour, and with the meter indicating about 70% of the full charge, the computer shuts down.  After a few times, I realized that it was the battery.  So, I plug it in and the battery guage indicates about 10% and then starts charging.  What's happening?

Answer:X61s battery suddenly goes from about 70% to nothing after installing ThinkPad Power Manager 2.42

I have the exact same issue, has there been any resolution from IBM?

I was looking earlier today at the choices they have available for the X61 and X61s (I know, lame, but X300 is more than I want to spend right now). For the X61s they offer a choice of 2 batteries, but the only one that is available without extra delay is the 8 cell battery; the other adds an extra 3 or so weeks to shipping date. I don't want the 8 cell since it weighs 1 lb and I'm trying to keep the weight down. So I went to accessories to see if I could purchase a different battery seperately. Yet when I select the X61s, model 7768 does not appear. Model 7768 is the one currently offered on the Lenovo site. For accessories (for battery accessories anyway) only two models show up for the X61s- I think something like 7770 and 7771. Anyone know what's up with that? Is that an older model of the X61s that lenovo is offereing since it's number is lower? I was hoping to purchase a slim line battery - is that not made for the 7768?or at least a lighter weight 4 cell. (plus I've been assumming I could switch between different types of batteries provided it's made for that line- is that right?). anyone know why 7768 does not show up at all? are there no batteries availalbe for it? or would one of the ones listed for a different x61s work? Other questions I have are on heat. I know a lot of people have remarked how hot it gets even at low CPUs for some people. Is there any difference in heat production between the x61 and the x61s- they have different speed gHZ processors, ... Read more

Answer:choices offered now on lenovo site for x61s and X60 (and battery and heat)

Hmm may I just start off by saying the X61 is not lame =) I can't help you much with the detailed questions, I'll just share from my experience. The standard battery is by itself quite good!Running "max battery" with full brightness, it runs for 6 hours+. "Max performance" still gives 3-4 hours !Concerning heat. Unless the temperature around is already hot, I haven't felt uncomfortable having my X61 on my lap for a longer period of time.

So I got myself the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 the other day, specific model being "431929G", along with it I got myself a 9-cell battery instead of the included 6-cell as well as this additional "slice battery" solutions which you attach at the bottom of the computer using the docking port it seems? The box which this slice battery came in was marked model 57Y4545, the piece of battery inside however says FRU: 42T4739? I guess and hope it's the same thing?  It does attach to the bottom of my W510 without any issues whatsoever, I lock it in place so I get that green indicator which should mean it's supposed to function? But it doesn't.. ThinkVantage Power Manager do pick up the battery but it's just standing there at 12% battery with no activity? Even after the main 9-cell is fully charged it wont start to charge the slice battery? I did even remove the main 9-cell in order to see whether or not that would change anything, but it didn't? And if I remove the power cord when running only the slice battery the W510 will just drop dead? So it's not charging, neither is it providing my W510 with any more battery life? It just sits the with 12% battery with no activity whatsoever, no charging or usage at all?

Answer:ThinkPad Battery 27++ (9cell) 57Y4545 wont work with my Lenovo ThinkPad W510?

Are you sure you're running the latest power manager? I.e., have you updated all the system drivers, os drivers, bios, etc.?

But after installing power manager the program reports "The battery has failed do to normal wear. The battery cannot be charged. Answer:ThinkPad T61 (6459-CTO) Battery failure with only 48 cycles.

its first use date is more than 4 years ago, it probably failed due to the age of the battery. There is no program that i know of to override the battery error, as there is an actual controller chip inside the battery.

So pretty randomly today, my computer shut off.  I thought this strange as it was fully charged last night and had maybe been on for an hour today. I looked down at the gauge on the start bar and it says, "plugged in, not charging" and when I go to power manager, it says my battery has failed due to normal wear.  I find this particularly odd as I've had a few laptops and this is the first time this has happened and it's on my youngest laptop (I've had for 4 years). I usually never keep the computer on during travel or overnight when it's not in use, so I don't think it's due to overwear but I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and knows a good solution?  If not, I'm willing to purchase a new battery and wonder where people would recommend getting one. Edit: I should also note that the Power Manager has the wrong part number as well.  My battery is the 45N1049, but Power Manager displays that the FRU is 45N1053, which isn't even a compatible version of my battery. Thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad E531 Sudden battery failure

I cannot say what caused the battery to fail, but FRU 45N1053 is compatible with your E531 system, but I am not sure why the one you have would be detected as a different FRU than is shown on the label.   Looking up both part numbers at https://support.lenovo.com/il/en/partslookup  shows that the 45N1049 is a 2.2Ah battery (no longer available), while the 45N1053 is a 2.8Ah Battery.      The sites lists substitute part numbers, although the substitutes for both part numbers show that they are currently out of stock at https://lenovo.encompass.com/ Good Luck,

Dear all My battery pack (42T4506) has worked well for the last two years. Until last Thursday (13 May 2010), battery lifespan was degraded to 1.5h hours -- which was accetably to me. Last Friday (14 May 2010), when I was sitting in a train trying to restart my laptop, the battery symbol was blinking with message mentioned in the subject above -- and the battery refusing from being active (although 100% loaded). I wonder how such a sudden failure can occur -- IBM's thinkpad battery never failed like that... Would anyone mind me giving the full address of Lenovo support? Thanks Lukas

Answer:x61s: Battery SUDDENLY dies with blinking "The battery has failed due to normal wear".

battery warranty only lasts 1 year, so you would have to get a new battery.

Bought laptop in October 2011. Battery didn't work properly from the first day. Sent it for repair in February 2012. Battery still didn't work reliably but I almost always could plug it in and didn't do anything, waited for the symptoms to develop before sending it out again. Plus warranty for the battery only was restarted for one more year after the first replacement (could see this in Lenovo Toolbox) and I thought I still had a bit of time left. Finally it stopped working (January 2013). Called customer service, not only they refused to believe me that my warranty was restarted but also didn't have any record of the battery replacement. Any thoughts ???

Answer:Lenovo X1 battery failure

Hello qwerty54321!

Welcome to the support Forums

What kind of issue are you having with the battery? Is the laptop recognizing the battery? Can you tell us what model (machine type) of X1 you have and what operating system it is running? The machine type can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit.

I understand your frustration with the warranty confusion. Are you able to post a screen shot of the battery warranty date posted in your lenovo Toolbox? The Lenovo Limited Warranty starts on the date the product was purchased and inclues one battery exchange, you must purchase an extended battery warranty within the original warranty period for the warranty to be extended past 1 year of the date of purchase.

I have had my y40 for 13 months now , the laptop has been riddled with issues through out its lifespan the first beginning with screen flickering and the second was the track pad. They were all resolved with the warrenty that was provided.  The third issue that has arised is a faulty battery pack. The battery problem actually arised after they sent back the laptop after they fixed the screenn....my warrenty ran out by the time they sent it back so I could not inqurie with the support team. The laptop fails to figure out the amount of battery that is left in the laptop. I could charge it all night and then it will suddenly die out of no where. The weird thing is sometimes it will last for hours and show proper die times and just work the way it is supposed to. Even now the laptop is running fine and not dieing.I have tried to uninstall : Microsoft AC AdapterMicrosoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method BatteryLenovo Energy Manager (Windows 8) I also tried to reinstall:Windows 10 battery management (Will not install on my Computer) I did NOT go back to Windows 8 and I have no tried to plug out the battery or replace it. I would like to know if my battery is infact **bleep**ED and the avenues to replace it (I cannot find any retailer online to buy a new battery) or some advice on how to fix the problem P.S I might not ever buy a laptop from lenovo again because of this bull**bleep**.. Regards, Andrew

The battery for my Lenovo ideapad 300 ? 15ISK has shown gradual degeneration and after less than a year it failed completely (battery report at the bottom). I?m deeply disappointed in Lenovo?s response to this. Initially they asked for having it in for repair, which in my case and I assume many others, is completely unacceptable. Being without a PC is extremely difficult and sending it away for a trivial issue like a battery replacement is unacceptable. But that was only the start of it, I checked Lenovo website and could not locate a replacement battery. Hence, I contacted Lenovo by phone but surprisingly I was told that the battery could not be sourced by Lenovo and I was recommended PC world or Amazon, neither have the correct battery in stock as it turned out.A lot of battery suppliers are listed on Google but most of them has very limited description and it seems very easy to end up with the wrong battery. I contacted Lenovo through Twitter asking for some assistance, but after several tweets explaining the issue, Lenovo vent quiet(!). A couple of weeks later I tried again, but with the same abysmal result. So, at the end, I gave up and ordered what hopefully is the right battery. Sadly, after Twitting Lenovo that I gave them up, they came back with the requested information?Lenovo is extremely good at promoting themselves, but be aware the equipment might not be up to scratch and their customer support is certainly not, not on their website, not on the phone, no... I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

Hello!I bought my Edge 420 two years ago and really love it. But after installing WIndows 8.1 battery life decreased for 2.5-3 hours from one battery charge. I don't wanna back to Windows 7, because I like new OS without any lag and problem. Not long ago I read about 9-cell battery and want to buy it. But where? Which store or place do you recommend for buying? And I know, that batteries capacity may go down because of time (laptop sales have begun in 2011). Should I buy new 9-cell battery? Or just forget about it and continuing using my old 6-cell?Thank you for replies!

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad E420. 9-Cell Battery.

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Capacity of a battery declines as the battery ages, with the number of charge cycles and time at high temperature. Under average usage patterns your battery maintains approximately 70% of its power capacity after the first year of operation.

If you feel that the battery backup is too low, try doing a battery firmware upgrade and BIOS update. Check the Lenovo support site for any battery firmware updates for your particular model.

Refer this knowledgebase which explains some tips to improve battery backup.

Still if you feel like getting a battery replacement, I would suggest you to contact Lenovo technical support. I'm sure they would be of great help.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello again, I know I haven't posted in a while, but I have a computer problem. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W500 running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I recently cleaned out the hard drive. I reinstalled the operating system and last night, the battery charged 100%, and a few hours ago, when I plugged the charging charging cord into the computer and turned the computer on, and the computer said the battery was at 5% charge, plugged in but not charging. (P.S. I installed the itunes 64 setup file to set itunes back up again.) The computer said that there were problems with the battery and I should consider getting a new battery. The charging cord is plugged into the computer, and I intend to have the charging cord plugged into the computer overnight. Should I? And what site or store should I go to to get a new battery? Do I need a new charging cord? Or is there is a way to solve it without getting a new charging cord ot battery? Any help would be greatly appeeciated.

unfortunately the answer is no, but you can get an ultrabay bay battery, that fits in your ultrabay slot, it should add around 1 to 1.5 hours to your battery life.

Hi folks,

for a few weeks I am experiencing a strange problem with my Lenovo L420 laptop running on Win7 x64. Generally it runs pretty smoothly under normal circumstances. I had no problems with week-long uptimes before.
However, from time to time when the computer automatically goes to "sleep" or "power save" mode (or when I close the laptop lid) it freezes with a "Driver Power State Failure" BSOD.

One observation is that this problem is apparently correlated to memory load and/or system load. In fact, the BSOD is more likely to occur the more programs or browser tabs are open in that very moment.

Here is my PC information:
Windows 7 64 Bit
What was original installed OS on system? Windows 7 64 But
Age of system (hardware) - Bought in sept '11, according to the label its July '11
Age of OS installation, have you re-installed the OS? - Sept '11, no

CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz
Video Card - onboard Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000
MotherBoard - Intel HM65
Power Supply - Sorry, no idea
System Manufacturer - Lenovo
Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) - please check attached picture

I attached the last several crash dumps.

My own personal analysis of these dumps did not lead to any consistent finding. To me (as a relative uneducated computer guy) it seems that in each crash a different driver is causing the problem... A google search turned out some people with similar problems, but to date I ... Read more

Answer:Driver Power State Failure, Win7 x64, Lenovo Thinkpad L420

In every case your Realtek NIC (network controller) seems to be causing the problem, with the exception being the latest two crashes, which blame your wifi. They may be interfering with each other. Make sure to update the drivers for both. They are dated from June/April.

He there,
I found a couple of similar threads, but I could not solve my problem yet.
Since a bought this laptop almost a year ago I have random system chrashes with a "Driver Power State Failure".
Sometimes it seems especially when I use lots of programms at the same time and always when the computer automatically goes to "sleep" or "poer save mode" (or when I close the lid).
What can I do to solve the problem or where is the problem exactly?

Kind regards

Hello Guys, Since I couldn't find any solution for my problem, I decided to write here, hoping that someone (either from team Lenovo or from the users) have the same problem and therefore can help me. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 model (version 0217). (I bought it from a friend, since it was not shipped anymore when I decided to buy it.)I have problems with my battery. The design capacity of it is 62.12 Wh, I used it wisely, so it wasn't always charged up to 100%. I always discharge it down around 5-7% and then plug in the AC adapter. (See image.)  My first problem is that in the last 3 months, the capacity is gone down to 45.88 Wh and I can't really figure out why. Can this be a generic problem with the battery? My second problem is - for which I've found another topic here but it didn't help me - that when I charge the battery, charging stops at 99%, showing "3 minutes is remaining" and if I unplug and replug the adapter, it stops as 99% saying it is fully charged. In the battery maintenance, I changed the settings from "Always fully charge" to Custom, but still, it won't charge up the battery fully.  My third problem is that I updated the BIOS of my laptop some days ago and when I try to search for a battery firmware update or when I do a battery gauge reset, the system suddenly shuts down without any warning or whatever. I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this, I really love my laptop but it really bugs me..... Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 (0217) battery problem

1) Battery do wear out eventually, you already have 234 cycles on the battery. So the battery capacity drop in the latter part of the cycles count is quite normal. It is nature of these battery to wear out. 2) For thinkpads, this behaviour is quite normal, this helps to prevent unnecessary wear on the battery cell. Once you use your battery back to say 95% or so, it will recharge back to 100%. 3) Are you saying that your laptop no longer works or that it intermittently shuts down?

Lenovo Issues Battery Recall for ThinkPad Laptops

Lenovo has issued a recall for several of its ThinkPad models because of various battery issues. You can download a tool from the Lenovo website to find out if the ThinkPad you own is one of the affected laptops.

A limited number of ThinkPad users have reported the following symptoms: Irreparable damage or battery cannot be charged error message from Power Manager or Message Center, or Low battery capacity, as indicated by short battery run time or sudden drops in the battery fuel gauge.

Good afternoon all,

I have been in the process of making my laptop, a Lenovo Thinkpad T410, a much better device to use. While I've been having HDD issues, my main issue right now is the battery that I had purchased. With the IBM Power Manager software, the battery is listed as a Sanyo 42T4710. It is a 9 cell battery and I will provide any other information you need.

When I had first purchased the device, after charging for awhile the battery icon on the laptop would begin to flash amber. It will not charge to 100%, and usually stops at 96%. With the battery manager, the charge threshold is set to "Always Full Charge (Start when below 96% and end at 100%). I tried to run the battery gauge reset option, however the laptop permanently stayed at 96% and never discharged lower than that.

Are there any recommendations that you can make for what I should do with the battery?

Thanks!

Hey there shiv309,

There is an excellent thread by CT809, that led to a solution for this very problem.

Re-installed Lenovo Settings Dependency Package and the Power Management Driver, then when I rebooted and went into Lenovo Settings, this option popped up. Ensure that its placed to "fully charge".

Hopefully this solves the issue for other users going forward.

Yeh, there's a switch, look around on the base.  It'll have the wireless symbol on it, then hit Fn+F5 and make sure it's turned on there, also.

Should I get an external mic if so any recommendations would be gratefully received. The speakers work very well as does the PC with Windows 10.

Hi!A month ago I installed a Sandisk SSD into my Thinkpad X61s. At first it worked great, but then it started having the following problem ever more frequently:All of a sudden the computer would freeze up completely and indefinitely, or it would give me a blue screen. This used to happen relatively infrequently. Now this happens right on start up, after the desktop gets loaded. This is also true when I start up in Safe Mode. The other problem is that it would sometimes not start up at all, giving me the following error:ERROR2100: HDD0 (Hard disk drive) initialization error (1) My google research suggests that this is a common problem that many people have faced. Yet I haven't found any definitive solutions. Some people have suggested that the problem may be due to a loose contact/ the SSD not sitting properly inside the computer. That's definitely not the case for me. I've opened up the HDD compartment and the SSD is sitting there as snug as a bug in a rug Others have suggested a SSD Firmware update. As it happens there are no such updates for the SSD I purchased.  So here are my questions regarding the other solutions:BIOS UPGRADEI currently have the latest lenovo-approved BIOS. It's version 2.22.There seems to be a non-official BIOS that many people are praising called the Middleton BIOS. It's available here:http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/459591-t61-x61-sata-ii-1-5-gb-s-cap-willing-pay-solution-8.ht...Does anyone have any experience with it? Any t... Read more

Answer:Error 2100 with Sandisk SSD on Thinkpad X61s

I also had problems with a SanDisk Extreme in my X200s. Essentially the same issues under Linux. From my research, the Sandforce based drives don't play well with some laptop firmware (X61, X200s), since the firmware will enable Sata Link Power (ie drop the link to low power when not reading & writing). I'm guessing that when on AC this feature is disabled (still happes, just not as often). Windows has a registery patch for this and on Linux you can also disable it. That is not a real solution even though it will help (since you still have to boot for the patch to take effect). I had to replace my SanDisk with a Samsung 840 (disk password protection doesn't work on X61s or X200s for the Samsung though).     I am writing on here in the hope that someone from Lenovo will take a look at my call reference and see what a complete joke it has become. In April 2008 I purchased a brand new Thinkpad X61s with a 3 year international warranty (as I tend to travel quite a lot!). When I first booted the machine, I noticed that it would freeze randomly every so often. I assumed it was Vista being rubbish, so when I got a chance I put XP on the machine, only to find the freezing problem continued. I then called Lenovo who said they would send an engineer to fix it.The engineer arrived and proceeded to replace the mainboard (i.e. motherboard and CPU). However, as part of this process the TFT LCD panel shattered. A new part was then ordered and shipped out. However, when the engineer came to replace the TFT LCD panel he found that he was unable to separate the screen from the motherboard due to a poorly machined cable attachment. He therefore ordered a new LCD TFT -> motherboard cable. This new part then arrived, but the wrong part number was sent, so he had to re-order.Finally, the machine was taken apart for the fifth or sixth time by now and was showing signs of distress and structural weakness. The engineer did however manage to replace the screen this time. However, when the machine was booted up, it became clear that the screen had again cracked.I am now in the position where I have an essentially BRAND NEW X61s that has been opened up more than half-a-dozen times, has ... I updated the Thinkvantage software today. I said there were 19 items to be updated and it did so for 18 items, not updating Rescue and Recovery because it said it could not locate some files. After it finished and the computer rebooted, I completely lost all control of the display which is currently running at it think 754 X680 or thereabouts and on 4 colours.  Whatever I do to correct it, or the automatic corrrection offered by the computer, it goes straight back to this unusable display. I have tried going back to two previous restore points, but it refuses to do so, saying nothing has changed on the computer. I am getting desperate as I need the PC!  What can I do to get back to normal operation?

Hi there, I am after few laptops and Thinkpad W530 tops my list - beating Elitebooks and Precisions in the process. I am after the top spec and a Quad-Core is a must (virtualisation + some heavy development). What makes me worried though is the reported CPU throttling issue of W530 that occurs while laptop runs on battery power (unplugged from AC) only - all the way down to seriously low 1.2Ghz! Happens when the discreet NVIDIA card is on. I can understand physics behind it as there might be not enough output wattage left to drive K1000 (35Watts) or K2000 (45Watts) but those kepler GPUs are still a far cry from 100Watts GTX680 present in some (though some 17inch) laptops with very little throttling happening. New quad core retina Macbook pro with its 45W GT 650M graphics card exhibits no serious throttling issue whatsoever while on battery - proof it can be done. Only as an example though, retina Macbook is no good for me. I wouldn?t mind bit of it say to 2-2.2Ghz still keeping the GPU and full power and active but to throttle the CPU down to some entry level ULV 1.2Ghz I find quite outrageous - as reason to consider laptop in the first place (dashing Elitebooks for instance) is portability and ability to work on the go purely on the battery power (whether battery lasts for 2 hours or for 5 hours would not matter much, hibernate swap the batteries all of this with SSD is less than a minute). 1.) It depends on the configuration of the cells in the battery pack. Those laptops generally have more cells (like a 12-cell pack), likely wired to allow for such loads at the cost of battery life. AFAIK, the 9-cell will also throttle.Supposedly, you can use ThrottleStop to counter the throttling, but do so at your own risk and all that jazz. Nevertheless, if you plan to impart such a drain on the battery pack often, expect to replace it within one or two years.

I have been trying to source an 8 cell battery for my X61s and so far have contacted retailers in Europe, China and the US without success. There seem to be a large number of non originals on offer but no genuine Lenovo/IBM,and the Lenovo website no longer offer batteries for sale. Anyone know a supplier please?

Answer:8 cell battery for an X61s

Lenovo sells them. The part number is 40Y7003. For example here they are on the Lenovo UK web site. The 8 cell is the same for the X60/X60s/X61/X61s.

I began havining a strange issue where my laptop should shutoff while on battery power even when the power gauge on the Lenovo Power center said that there was plenty of time left. Afte this occured a few times I opened up the power manager and watched the specific values. The laptop just turned off (full power loss) when the power manager said that there was about 30 Wh left. When I turned the computer back on on AC power the power manager said that there were 3Wh left. A few times when this occured the power manager actually said there was 50-60% of the battery left but most of the time the percentage was very low. I assumed there was something wrong with the battery so I ordered a replacement. My old battery got me about 45minutes to 1 hour before it would just shut off. With the new battery, things seemed okay, but after I just used it on battery power for about an hour it shut off the same way. Starting the computer back up, the power manager claims that about 70% of the battery power is left. The only other information I have is that when I took off the old battery to put on the new one, a small piece of black plastic that was inbetween the power connectors to the battery fell off. I didn't see any other damage (though I didn't look too hard) so I didn't think much of it (it didn't seem too important and the laptop is 6 years old anyway. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, My computer gets burning hot (such that I cannot keep my hands on it after a while) and I never questioned it until I saw something over the internet that said that Lenovo/IBM had a battery recall for several laptops including x61. Where can I get this information? At times, I do think that my computer could catch on fire.  Before going to bed, I either feel the temperature or shut it off, something that I should not have to do. PLEASE RESPOND ASAP....I cannot find a way to reach Lenovo Technical Support via email and I cannot hold on the line. We are about to purchase a T series computer also--do they also have the same issue? So many thanks.

Answer:X61s battery recall?

I have read the spec sheet for the X61 but I'd like to know what the real world battery life is for the X61s and X61 with the 8 cell battery for basic use (i.e. wifi on, some internet browsing, word processing, music, etc...not gaming). Anyone did any tests?

Question: x61s battery error

Hi I got an IBM x61s 7666 av3 last october. Something happened to the battery suddenly today, I don't know what's going on. I started it and then the laptop went dead surprisingly. And then I tried the power buttom to start it again. But nothing came out. I got in the plug and it worked but the battery light kept flashing. When I got the Vista, I noticed that there was a note balloon from power manager, said ' A battery error has occured. the battery can't be charged. Replace the battery.' Every time I tried to use the battery instead of attaching AC adapter, x61s just shut down immediately. And now, my question is what I could do to deal with this? Get a new battery? Is my warranty still working? If have to, can I get a new free battery? Anyboby can help? also get me at [email protected] thanks for any helpMessage Edited by abc747374737 on 09-23-2008 07:09 AM

Answer:x61s battery error

The usual battery warranty is 12 months from the date of purchase. But some battery have extended warranty to 18 months for possible known manufacturing defects. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=BATT-LENOVO

Hi, I also posted this a few days ago on the stick battery recall post but have not had any responses.   I've recently had battery issues, recently read the sticky post and my FRU# is in the list of batteries in this recall.  I followed the link but it expired Oct 1st. My model is x61s and 7668-CTO is the product ID.  I cannot run on battery power for more than about 15 minutes even after having the laptop plugged in and the indicator saying it was fully charged.  According to the power manager I've had 168 cycles on it.  I have the high capacity battery and used to be able to run for nearly 6 hours without plugging it in. The recall has expired but are there other options available to me?  I'm not quite understanding why something that gets recalled has an expiry date on the recall....?? Please advise... thanks... Jen

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing £25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 i5 Laptops with Windows 7 - Dead Laptop with Battery Problems

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

There is nothing on the Internet that I found to document the exact process to remove and replace the internal battery on the Twist. So, wen the battery died on my Twist I video taped ow I did it. I made some mistakes, read the description, but I am creating this post on it now, I have an operational battery and the computer seems no worse for the amateur wear. This is not a video series that is endorsed by anyone nor should it be a replacement for professional service. Do not attempt! Do not consume. Recycle as your state and country law's dictate. The battery time of my computer is good I guess, it can get up to 2.5 hours during normal usage with powersaving enabled (4-cell battery). Problem is that going into sleep mode (not hibernation) seems to drain the battery immesly. For example: I shut put the computer into sleep mode with 10% left only to wake it up 10 minutes later with 4% left... If I put it into sleep mode with 50% left I can wake it up some hours later with 40% left.. This is irritating as it limits my usage of the computer on the road. Hibernation is even worse: put into hibernation with 20% left and when waking up it has 5% left (almost at once shutting down automatically to save power)! Is this normal or is this something I can do to save the situation? Thanks,Erik

Answer:Abnormal battery drain? x61s

Do you have any energy consuming devices (USB, external monitor, serial port device, parallel port device)attached to your computer? Keep in mind: If your computer is in sleep mode (S3), e.g. its memory will stillbe fully powered, mainly contributing to a power consumption of approx. 2-10 % compared to normal mode! Check for the following at your BIOS:wake up from LAN/WAN/USBUSB always poweredDeactivate those functions as they will drain your battery. Please do not put your computer to Standby (S2/3) before transporting it:You better use Hibernation (S4) mode instead: Otherwise, you might looseunsaved data - if your battery runs out of power and can't keep memoryinformation alive. Sincerely,Christian

I have an x61s, and the default battery just died.Strange, because I still had a pretty good uptime with it. (like 2 hours under Linux, and even more with windows)) And one day:Battery light is blinking orange.I first though it was because my battery was just uncharged, so I?ve checked in the GNUPlot tool, and the battery indicate a charge level a little bit over 90%. Is that normal ?

Hey Experts,  I just received my new X61s.  Do you guys have any suggestions as to a better battery or a protective sleeve that I should purchase?  I'd like to carry the laptop back and forth to class in my messenger bag with my books, and I'd prefer not to have to carry an additional laptop bag.    I'm not sure which battery came with the computer.  I can only seem to find two numbers that may help the savvy identify it: FRU P/N 42T5247ASM P/N 92P1164  Thanks so much for any advice!

My X61s battery duely failed, was in the warranty period, I called and was sent a new one. When I put it in, the yellow blinking light immediately came on, it only charged to 50% (and it stays there), the laptop only works when plugged in and shuts down immediately after I unplug it (though since the first time I am shutting windows down properly). Has anyone else been sent a replacement battery that also didn't work? Ben Edwards

I've noticed in the past couple days that the 8 cell battery has disappeared as an option when configuring an X61/X61s.  Any ideas why?  It's still available as an accessory, but I don't want to buy 2 batteries, I just need one 8 cell.Cheers,Adam

Answer:X61s 8 cell battery option

My guess its cause of the current battery shortage, I was looking at getting a X61 soon but im wondering how long it will be before they get enough to put the 8 cell option back on the site.  As for the assessory, I heard they upped the price and its only for those you really NEED it for some reason. So i guess our only option is to wait and hope shortage ends soon.

Hi,I just run the ThinkPad BIOS Update Utility from the latest ThinkVantage System Update. As stated by the BIOS Update Utility I closed all my applications and proceeded. I selected  Update ThinkPad BIOS". Then the BIOS Update Utility froze during the process (it displayed that it is now writing the backup file of the old bios). After some time a window from Windows popped up and said that the program hangs and closed the BIOS Update Utility. Now I am not sure if the BIOS on my notebook is in a healthy state or not!So I tried to do the update manually again. I downloaded the ThinkPad BIOS update utility from the Lenovo website [1] (Version 3.24). But when I start the BIOS Update Utility and select ?Update ThinkPad BIOS? it shows me an error message:  Driver Loading failed.

The Utility cannot proceed. My ThinkPad is a X61s (7666-B4G), running Windows 7 SP1, 32bit  Any recommendations what I can try next?Is it safe to reboot the computer, or is it bricked now? Kind regardsThomas [1] http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/downloads/default.page

Answer:X61s Bios Update Tool crashed, ThinkPad still running what to do now?

The system did a reboot and now it is finaly dead. When it was still running i tried different methods to do new clean reflash of the bios but could not find any solution which worked. Is there still hope to recover the ThinkPad?

I just bought a new Bluetooth X61s with the Lenovo Bluetooth mouse option. At end of installing the drivers off the CD, the "Bluetooth Mouse Setup Wizard" screen hangs with "Bluetooth device not detected" message. I have the mouse "on" and pushed the little Bluetooth button such that the green LED is flashing on mouse. What am I missing? In "Device Manager" I see under "Mouse" -- "PS/2 Track Point mouse installed"  -and-  under Bluetooth "Bluetooth Bus Enumerator" is the only item. It's usually so simple with cell phone Bluetooth pairing. How could this be so difficult? Anyone have this problem? Thanks.

Answer:New X61s won't detect its own ThinkPad Bluetooth mouse at initial setup.

SORRY, my error. I just found the PDF instructions, and was able to get mouse installed and paired correctly. By the way, this Bluetooth connecting IS way more complicated than a cell phone headset or speakerphone. I should have known.

Today my X61S quit running on AC. It was running and charging battery, and then I noticed the green "AC" icon was off.Now it powers up normally on battery, but does not power up on AC. It does not power up on AC when docked to Ultrabase or connected directly. Of course I tried another AC supply without success. Green "AC" icon is always off.Is schematic available? Locate and check fuses? Motherboard repair service available? Thanks in advance...243r

Schematics are not available, that type of stuff is proprietary...Not exactly what you're looking for, but likely as close as you can get:http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=85964Good luck.

Hi everybody, I have a X61s bought about 14-month ago with 8-cell battery which is facing a serious battery problem now, please give me some advice. Whenever the battery reaches 92%, it will drop down to 5%  in a few seconds and shut down itself. it cant hold more than 10 mins.  When I connect the adpater to re-charge the battery, it takes for a while to go up to 12% and then suddenly it reaches 100%.   my battery is FRU is listed for recall, but  when I used the battery diagnose tool to check if says it doesnt qualify. Power manager shows battery still in a good condition which can hold 70% capacity.  I believe this is the problem of battery itself. because 1 month ago, the battery works fully functional.   So I am just wondering what can I do to have a replacement for free. I can provide photos or video as proof of the issue.please advise.  Thank you very much and look forward to hearing from you.

Answer:X61S battery problem!! drop from 92% to 5% in a second. please advise!!!

Your battery has one or more defective cells. Given that it's over 12 months old, I doubt that Lenovo will replace it. Good luck.

The Device driver for my Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ852 somehow is missing.  In the Device Manager it shows me a device status of "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware.  The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)".   I then try to search for a an driver via the "Troubleshoot" option, but it is unable to find it.    I am using an lenovo X61s laptop with the Thinkpad X6 Ultrabase Port Replicator/Docking station which has the Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ852 built-in. Can someone please point me towards where I can download the driver or resolve the problem?   Is there maybe a location on my hard drive where this driver is stored, but windows does not know how to find it?Message Edited by tomrarndt on 11-10-2008 07:21 AM

Hello There isnt a driver download for the optical drive through Lenovo. The Driver is usually handled by the OS.Have you tried to reseat the Drive? what you can try doing is un-installing from the device manager and restart the machine see if windows can reinstall automatically
