External Microphone won't work on x230 Tablet

Question: External Microphone won't work on x230 Tablet

I have a microphone that works only as such, with no speaker and is not a headset. I am trying to get it to work with my Lenovo x230 Tablet laptop.

When I plug it into the 3.5mm port on the right side next to the Ethernet input nothing happens and it doesn't show up in my windows sound or do anything except change the top left port under "Analog System" from gray to black. Unfortunately that is the audio port not the microphone port. This is shown by the next two pictures.Microphone not plugged in:

Microphone Plugged In:

So something is up...I tried again by going to the "device advanced settings" and changing it from "classic mode" to "Multi-stream mode".This atleast shows in the windows control that there is a "external mic" and a "docking mic". I have no idea what the docking mic is. Anyway this picture below is what happens before I plug in the mic:

And now when I plug it in:
Link to picture

As you can see the windows controller is unchanged in the input recording tab but, the realtek program has detected the mic again by turning on the analog headphone button on. As well as adding an extra tab to the program called "HD Audio 2nd output". As far as I can tell t thinks my mic is a headset for some reason. I wish to change this. When I switch over to the sound tab on the windows program it shows an added headset which is actually it detecting my microphone in windows. It only detects this headset when the realtek program is in advanced "Multi-stream mode". Here is a picture illustrating both the new tab on the Realtek Manager and the Windows Sound tab showing the headset which is again actually my microphone.

And yes I have updated my Realtek Driver to the latest version it is Version shown in the picture below:

Any help I could be given would be greatly appreciated as I have been trying to find a solution to this problem for the past couple days.

Preferred Solution: External Microphone won't work on x230 Tablet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lots of problems with the microphone and sound system. Really disappointing after dropping so much cash on this laptop.  Aside from the insane amount of background noise that makes the built-in mic basically unusable with Skype, the main problem I'm having is the combo mic/headphone port. It doesn't work for input -- nowhere am I seeing it detected, not in Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording, and not in the Realtek app. If I plug my iPhone headset into my laptop, I cannot record sound so long as it is plugged in. This has been an issue for other laptops using the Conexant drivers; I've updated my Realtek drivers and done all the basic troubleshooting for sound. Anyone have any other suggestions? Anyone else experiencing this glitch?Jeff

Hi everyone, Had some questions on some things. First: The computer was advertised with a backlit keyboard but didn't come with it. How would I add it?Second: The memory usage hovers around 2.2 - 2.5 (8gb ram) - this is much higher than my X61T it replaces. Any way to lower or is this normal?Third: I saw in this review: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%...there is an accelerometer which determines orientation - how do I turn this on? Fourth: A lot of this bloatware that lenovo never works properly - for instance when trying to change the % to how long is left, it doesnt work. Also, when trying to show the different power plans, doesnt seem to work as well.  Other than that the computer seems pretty awesome. Can't wait to get it up and running.

Answer:Just got my new X230 Tablet, had some questions on how to work somethings.

1. The backlit keyboard is optional and not available on all models. Try pressing Fn+Spacebar to see if it turns on - once for Low, one more time for high and again to turn off.2. Is this for the same operating system? As far as i know X61T's shipped only with XP Tablet and Vista. Also, the X3100 graphics chip on the X61 uses up to 384MB of shared memory, whereas the new integrated graphics can take up a lot more. It might help to remove all the Lenovo bloatware you don't need.3. You need to make sure you have the Thinkvantage Active Protection installed. After that you can check in the control panel if it's working (Link to image), or download something like QCNLive that shows the accelerometer readings.4. Can't help you here, as i usually uninstall the stuff i don't need. Just stick to the battery info Windows provides.

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates. Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again. I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Answer:USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

You can try this (semi-shot in the dark but it's solved similar issues for me in the past with Windows 8/X220 and the Tablet not working after resuming from standby).  Go to control panel, find your USB device(s) and go to the properties for the one or however many devices are listed that apply, and in the properties, find a tab or section related to power management and uncheck the box that "allows computer/windows to turn off the device to save power". Perhaps it's not the most elegant solution, perhaps it's not a solution at all in your case, but at least here I've found it effective in some cases but I don't know if it's draining more power while sleeping than it otherwise would..   Hope it works as at least a temporary workaround to your frustrations though.. good luck.

I have a 2 years old Thinkpad E520. The internal microphone now work intermittently. When it works, it's fine. But all the sudden it mutes completely. And it works back a gain after some random time. The problem just repeat itself after very few days. I also have an USB microphone which is works fine on other machine but very noisy on the E520. I have window 7 pro and up to date Conexant audio driver. Any hint on what is wrong and how to fix it? Many thanks.

when using the usb microphone, go into your BIOS menu, disable the internal microphone, see whether that helps.

I've come here because I have no other options, this is frustrating me to no end. My problem is fairly simple. I recently bought a zalman zm-mic1 to use for streaming purposes, but I can't find where to plug it into my laptop. I've tried plugging it into where headphones go(aka the only slot it fits in) but it doesn't come up as a recording device. I've read all sorts of stuff about sound cards and splitters but that's like a different language to me. The mic is super simple. On one end is the mic, on the other is a red plug, it says its 3.5mm. This is straight from the manufacturer. " Insert the microphone jack into the Mic Input of the soundcard/audio input device. Adjust the Mic Input Level in the soundcards software/audio input device." Is my laptop not an audio input device, and if not, does that mean I absolutely have to blow more money on whatever a sound card is? BASICALLY all i'm asking is how the hell do I actually record sound with this mic. I have my laptop, my webcam, my capture card, and that's about it. Am I missing something? For my webcam all I did was plugged it in and boom it worked great, so wtf is up with this

Answer:My external microphone won't work!

Hi fuzzybluelights, and welcome to TSG.

It would be rather difficult to suggest any new possible solutions if you don't tell us some of the things you have all ready tried. Not that many members here have clairvoyant powers.

Some possible solutions ...

Have you checked the Windows volume/mixer control panel to make sure the mic input is not muted?

Some computers may have hardware that allows the mic input to also work as a line level input. In that case, it needs to be specifically set to be a mic input.

Have you checked the microphone on a another computer to make sure you did not buy a bad one?

Please help-- I've tried everything. I have an external microphone headset that I plugged into the back of my pc (pink mic and blue line-in). I've unchecked mute on the microphone in the volume control and recording mode in options. I've done the "test" in the control panal/sounds and audio devises/voice/test hardware-- but it doesn't recognize it. ALso under the audio devises/audio-- the advanced tab is greyed out. I've tried everything including going into my administrative tools panal to see if there is problems in the human interface -- checked "manual" but nothing works! Please help! Everything is updated-- I have a sound audigy sound card- but it tests okay.

I am starting to get into the game commentating business on YouTube and I need help. I already put out a video and decided to purchase the recording software I've been using to get higher quality sound and video. Although when I tried to record a video I didn't realize that nothing was getting picked up through my mic. I use the Turtle Beaches Ear Force X11 headset. Now I thought these finally broke on me since I've had them for a while, but that's not the case. I tried messing with the input and wiggling it around a bit, but to no avail. But then I noticed something. It works perfectly fine when i put it in only partially and not all the way. I would continue to keep using this like this but when I use it partially plugged in I seem to get a lot of constant buzzing and background noise due to the connection not being completely secure. How do I fix this?? I've gone into the mic settings and tried setting it up again, but it wouldn't even pick up any sound there either. Please help!

Hello.

I have Satellite A300D-11T, Windows Vista HP 32bit SP1.
After almost one year of good system working, Vista decided to fail. So I have reinstalled it.

I downloaded all necessary drivers, and forgive me - no unneeded trash like +Assist+, +Acoustic Silencer+, +Config Free+ and so on (surprisingly fan slowed down and the whole computer is cooler).

Now. When I plug headphones with integrated microphone the system does not automatically switch onto it.
In +Control Panel / Sound+ I can see that I plugged it, I can perform a test and the test itself works perfectly with headphones but +Speech Recognition+ on the other hand receives sounds only from built in microphone.

Also when playing music from any player, plugging headphones does not switch anything - music still plays from built in speakers. The same situation with +Skype+ and changing any setting does not help.

At first I forgot to install sound drivers because Windows did that for me but adding it did not improve the situation.

I'm starting to think that maybe I missed installing something. Here is what I have so far:
- lan drv - 20080715144843
- modem drv - 20080403094119
- realtek wlan drv - 6115011122008

- touchpad drv - 20080715144806
- webcam drv & soft - 20080715144822

Can anyone help me with this?

Please install firstly the SP3 of Win XP before you would install the sound driver!

PS: if newer BIOS version has been released then update it too!

I don't know which mic do you use but on many headsets there is separate button for mic disabling. It is kind of small control placed mostly on headset cable.
Check please if your mic is enabled properly there. Check also settings in application where you want to use your mic (Skype, MSN and so on).

hi SteinT,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This system uses a combo jack or Combo Audio port. This may be the problem.

Can you post a Screen shot of the recording devices properties window

Right click on the Speaker Icon on the lower right corner of the screen and choose "Recording Devices"
Take a screenshot of that without  your Loudspeaker plugged in.

Also take a screenshot of that windows when you connected your Speaker.

Let me know your findings
Cheers

Answer:Satellite L50-B916 - External Microphone recording doesn't work

I cannot say for sure what may be wrong there but two things are confusing me:
-somehow your external mic is obviously not detected because in case when external mic is connected notebook switches automatically to it
-I don't understand why there are two identical entries under recording devices.

When I connect my headset there is still one single entry (Conexant SmartAudio HD Default Device) but my machine switches automatically to external microphone only.

Have you tested functionality with some applications like Skype?

Question: X230 Tablet newbie

Hi all,

I've recently bought a Lenovo X230 Tablet. Specificly a 3434-CTR.

Now, as far as I know, a X230 tablet should have a multitouch screen and pressure sensitive built in Wacom tablet.

I just got this machine and it has a pre-installed copy of Windows 7 64bit Professional on it so I would gather that it has all necesery drivers already installed.

Problem is, the touch screen simply doesn't work - it doesn't respond to my fingers at all. It does work with the stylus pen, though. But it doesn't support pressure sensitivity. I tried using a portable drawing program that has never failed to work with any pressure sensitive pen tablet but it simply didn't work.

I'm guessing that there are some drivers I should install, but I don't know what to look for.

Is it possible that a 3434-CTR doesn't have a multitouch screen nor a pressure sensitive pen tablet?

Answer:X230 Tablet newbie

Welcome to the community.

You may wish to visit the Parts Lookup page. Fill in your S/N and machine type (3434) and it should return a list of parts that went into your build. Either post the whole list back here, or, if it's obvious, post the P/Ns for the LCD panel and we can try to assist further.

I just received my second non-tablet X230 after my first one didn't work out. The new one has Windows 8 Pro loaded on it and I noticed that many of the programs were optimized for a touch screen by default, I also had the touch keyboard button on the taskbar. This is not a huge deal, but does anyone know if there is a way to remove "Pen and Touch" support or fix this error. I imagine that they loaded the x230 tablet image onto my x230 by mistake. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.   Thanks!

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 Enterprise on an X230, but the Tablet Input Panel does not show. The pen functions fine as a mouse, and this machine ran Windows 7 with no problems so I know there are no hardware issues. Is there any way to force the TIP to show or install the Tablet PC functionality if that is the problem?

Answer:X230 Tablet--no TIP under Windows 8

In the Windows METRO mode, the touch keyboard will automatically come out when the focus is in a text field. In the Windows desktop mode, one way to get the Touch keyboard is:Click the key combination: Windows + C to bring up the Charm.Click the Settings.Click Keyboard and select the Touch Keyboard. Unfortunately, it seems that it does not remember the selection so the next time you click on a text field, you have to go through the process again. I hope MS will change this. Even better is if the X230T is in a tablet mode (meaning the screen is lay flat and on top of keyboard, it will be smart enough to use Touch Keyboard by default. Edit: Another way to display the Touch Keyboard is to click the Touch Keyboard icon at the task bar.

Is there a way to specify different actions for the pen buttons?  For example, when using one specific program, I'd like the side button to function as if it were the shift key instead of the right-click but then have it operate as the standard right-click when in Windows or other programs. Is this a native functionality or is there a third-party program available that could give me such options?

Answer:X230 Tablet Pen Options

aardvarky, This is an excellent question! I definitely understand your wants! Officially, it needs to be a setting inside the software you want to use the digitizer pen in.

Examples:

With the new TBT2 there is a software called QuickSnip, insdie the QuickSnip settings you can change the digitizer pen button from right click to screen capture.

Inside OneNote you can change the settings of the Pen Buttons, here is a link to a X230T Digitizer Pen Input Youtube video that may have more clairification.

So, as Digitizer Pen Technology becomes more popular, I believe we will begin seeing more Applications and Software adding the technology to enhance their user customizations.

Hello Everyone, I've got an X230, and I'm trying to create a podcast. The x230 has only a combo-jack, which doesn't work with mic input, but I have a docking station, which has a dedicated microphone port. The mic on the laptop isn't bad, but I wanted a more professional sound, so I am using my Rode Videomic, a popular shotgun mic which I use routinely with Canon DSLR's (specifications here). The Rode Videomic draws power from a 9V battery, and must be turned on for use. I am using Audacity for sound recording and processing.  I connect the Rode to the microphone port on my dock, with x230 docked and turned on. I turn on the Rode mic. It doesn't show up under Recording Devices. I am able to record off it, however, the sound pickup is very quiet, much more quiet than the x230's onboard mic, and increasing the sound results in very high levels of noise.  Does anyone have an idea what I'm doing wrong, or suggestions for how I should use the Rode Videomic with my x230? Thank you,-Victor

My X230 Tablet laptop hangs after booting or reawakening from stand-by. It happens every single time. It lasts for about 2-3 minutes, during which the cursor can be moved but nothing responds. The hard-drive status indicator is constantly on. After 2 or 3 minutes the laptop becomes responsive again and the problem doesn't return until I reboot. Sometimes the problem occurs immediately after booting, sometimes a few minutes later. I've had the problem since I got the laptop.

Answer:X230 Tablet hangs after booting

It still happens after a diagnostic boot, with all services stopped.

I am in the process of upgrading my X200 Tablet to the X230T. I had the ultrabase with the X200T with the following accessories Serial Ultrabay Slim DVD Multi (P/N 42T2515) and the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II (P/N 43R1984). I have yet to talk with anyone at Lenovo or read anywhere online if these two accessories with be compatible with the Thinkpad Series 3 Ultrabase. Does anyone have any further information. I would hope I would not need to purchase these again.

Answer:X230 Tablet Ultrabase Compatibility

they use the same type of connector and slots, so it should be compatible in that regard.

Hello all,I have 230X tablet and I upgraded it to windows 8.Since the upgrade, I feel that the power manager shows wrong time remaining, and every time I try to configure something with the power manager dashboard it crushes as "not responding".I read that the battery should last for 7+ hours, but after a full charge it shows only 3+ I also installed the latest driver from Lenovo's website and it didn't help. Does it sounds familiar? Does anyone has a solution? Thanks!

Answer:Power manager X230 Tablet

Hi, As far as I know, Lenovo has not supported Power Management for Windows 8 yet. What you said happends to me too. The time remaining is not accurate. Sometimes it drops from 25% to 10%, and the computer goes to sleeps after a few seconds... But after I reset my battery gauge, it solves the problem. By somehow, I discover that Power Management does work in Guest Account. You should perform Battery Gauge Reset in your Guest Account. Here is what I do: You should activate your Guest account (When you hit Windows key, type Accounts, Users accounts (in setting) -> Manage other Account -> Turn on GUEST account. You run battery reset there. (it takes long time since the computer will fully charge your battery and then completely discard and then chage again). Unfortunately, you cannot switch account during you perform battery reset and you cannot turn off computer during that time. It takes about ...12h to perform the task. But it works for me. The drawback of Guest account is you cannot connect to internet. I hope that LENOVO would support Power Management soon!. Too bad for a business laptop .

I recently purchased a X230 type 3434-CTO Tablet (the one with gorilla glass). The first night I had it it worked great and I was incredibly happy with my purchase. At the end of the night I began installing an update for windows and let it run overnight. The next day I encountered severe problems with the touch screen. Pen input will not function at all in tablet mode and intermitently in laptop mode. I began with restoring windows to before I updated, then reinstalled windows and all drivers ect. Nothing has worked so far. I brought it to the IT department at my school and they tried using older drivers ect, nothing has worked so far. I am increidbly frustrated, has anyone else encountered this  or a similar issue? Thank you for your time and thought

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I'm also new in using X230 tablet or any 2-in-1 laptop. This is my second ThinkPad but first convertible laptop. About problems. Shortly after I've got this ThinkPad I've installed Windows 10 because in my opinnion it works better and IS better than Win7. But after installation, I've encountered a few problems.First problem was no auto rotation - I could do that only by installing drivers for Tablet Buttons (it didn't bother me that much as next few problems).Second problem was not working Dolby Profile - anyone has suggestions why? I've read that eccp4.exe or something like that is not supported in Win10. The only thing with Dolby that did work was Dolby Digital Plus (and the equalizer there is horrible!).And third, and also MAIN problem was random screen touches. Did anyone encountered this kind of problem on yours X230 tablet? It happened only when I was fully in "tablet mode". Like for example I was doing some notes on classes and A LOT of times Action Center came up. With no touch from my side - I was only writing notes or not even touching the screen. Also normal touches appeared, not only Action Center sliding. Firstly I've got a little scared because it's used laptop bought on something like ebay. But my second thought was to go back to Win7 from recovery (which didn't work with F8, I've used SWM/WIM tutorial to fully recover system). And finally it seems that this problem doesn't occur on Win7. When I'm in full "table... Read more

Answer:X230 tablet - Windows 10 and 7 problems

i've been running windows 10 as a devoloper since before its's launch with very few issues.First make sure you download the drives from lenovo for winows 10 that till fix most of your issues.some things are just not compatable with the windows 10 OS look for replacements in the windwos store but your dolby does have a driver update. for some reason the thinkvantage software does not down load the drivers for you you'll have to do that on your own. Once you download all your drivers your X230T will run much more normaly. keep in mind however if you have the touch screen model it only supports 2 finger touch while winows 10 supports 10, it still works but many of the gestures don't you can chage your screen if your so inclined as far as i know there is no driver update. Good luck

Applies to being unplugged and plugged in. It's not due to have power consumption, usually just shuts off from within minutes of logging into my account. Safe mode seems to delay this problem for a while. Best way to go about fixing this? Malwarebytes doesnt detect any viruses.

I have a Thinkpad X230 Tablet.  The trackpoint and touchpad have stopped working.  This just happened today, after about six months of use.  When I boot the machine, I can move the mouse cursor for a few seconds, but then it stops.  I don't see any error messages.  The Ultranav panel in the mouse control panel applet shows the controls for both trackpoint and touchpad greyed out--they can't be clicked on, and the "enabled" boxes are not checked.  The device manager says that the device is working.  If I try to update the driver, I'm told it is up to date.  If I uninstall the driver and reboot, the trackball and touchpad work, but they seem to be using generic drivers--the ultranav panel does not show in the mouse applet.  I'm told to reboot to complete installation.  However, if I do that, I'm back to square one, with the ultranav not working.  I checked the boot configuration, and it shows both the trackpoint and touchpad as enabled.

If that doesn't work then I would assume it's a hardware problem.

Answer:x230 Tablet "Black Button"

I have not discovered a way revamp the Black Button without changing the registry, However, this may be a good alternative for you to create your own hard shortcuts in Windows 8:

Use the [Win-Logo]+[D] to see the Windows-8 desktop.
Right click on the Windows-8 desktop and select New, Shortcut.
Then in the called input box simply enter the appropriate shortcut text.
(found under the properties of the desired program)
Once a desktop shortcut is made, right click the shortcut, press properties and shortcut key replace none with the key or key combination you would like to use.

Then Pin the Desktop Shortcut to Start (Menu). To do this right click on the desktop shortcut and select "Pin to Start"

I also thought I would share the official Windows 8 shortcuts with you.

(so that it fits in my hard shell case) Secondly, when using the X230t to read a pdf doc, can you increase the size of text by using two finders on display and spreading fingers apart?   And can you move the pdf page by moving one finger on display? (if only portion of page is displayed) Can you have a pdf doc opened on half of display, while taking notes with digy pen on other half of the display? Can the digypen be used with word and excel?thanks, and have a great day

1. the measurement you have is with the 3 cells battery fitted, it is not the measurement for the X230 with 6 cells battery fitted. The 6 cells battery will add another 1 inch to the measurement of 9 inch. 2. Yes, you can zoom by pinch. The movement of page with one finger depends on type of pdf software you use. 3. Yes you can write on the screen whilst having a pdf doc opened on half of the screen. 4. I have thinkpad x230 tablet, and I have mixed feeling about it. It is a quite powerful one, does most of the job but have too many design flaws - broken rubber latch after a while and rubber buffers in the bottom etc.,  I hate the new gen x240 laptop, especially the X series convertible laptop is discontinued. Stupid, in my opinion, yoga design. I, no way, want to flip the keyboard to any surface. Especially on a field trip. X240 discontinues Express Card slot, no thunderbolt, no digitizer. The removal of trackpoint 3 click buttons, which were combined with the trackpad. People complain a lot when they accidentally click the trackpad while typing. I am a trackpoint person, not trackpad person. So the removal was **** retarded, anti consumer, anti Thinkpad legacy!Pls, see this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jb7p3VkQCOo. I did not made this video but 100% agree with this guy.  In addition, it seems to me that newer generations Intel core processor (4th and upcoming 5th) was weeker than ivy bridge processor because Ivy Bridge processors are full power 35W, now, everything is low powered to save the battery life. I have a few questions: 1.Is there anyway, or any company that can make a better thinkpad x230 tablet screen (say upgrading the screen from 1366x768 to higher resolution, improving wacom pen digitizer on the edges 2. Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

Answer:x230 Tablet keyboard issue

I would just replace the keyboard.  This sort of problem is almost always a short in the keyboard.  Used ones are commonly available.  The T430, X230, T530, W530 all use the same keyboard

I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

Hi all, This laptop is giving me nightmares at this point. I can't afford a new one at this moment so i come here for input. The issue I am having right now besides the known audio failure is with the power management, spedificaly the throttling that happens while it is on AC. To me, it seems that the Speedstep roles are reversed. It runs on full turbo speed, over 3ghz on battery but it clocks down to 1198mhz according to CPU-Z when it is plugged in. No combination of settings either in the BIOS, Power manager or the Windows power options have any effect, everything is at 100%. The battery is installed at all time and I have tried both 65 watt and 90 watt AC adapters which are both new. BIOS is updated and I have tried both Win 7 and 10, fully updated with a fresh install with newest drivers and programs and numerous BIOS resets with CMOS battery removed. I am suspecting the power jack at this moment but Power manager reports both AC adapters correctly. I appreciate any response if anybody else has faced this issue or anything like it.

I got my X230 Tablet recently and want to run it under Windows 8. After upgrading yesterday, the Touch Screen refuses to work: the position is always in the bottom right corner, but clicking is recognized. The effect is that all windows are closed and opened alternately when touching the screen. Quite annoying, in particular as in Windows 8 the Touch screen would be actually very useful. I updates all drivers and bios, as far as possible, but the Touch Screen behavior remained. Somebody suggested that a clean installation of Windows 8 does lead to a well working Touch Screen. I tried it once, but after about two hours of computer work, Windows came back with the message that the installation failed, and thus I stay with my non working Touch Screen. What do I have to do to get my Touch Screen working again? The Wacom Pen is fine, so I can live with the X230 for the time being, but working with my fingers on the screen would be actually nice - and it beats those iBooks by lengths. Who has ideas?

In Windows 8, writing-to-text transcription is normally a "keyboard," if you will, that you have to select. When you are on the desktop of your machine, is there a keyboard icon on the taskbar? If this is not visible in laptop mode, then see if it is there in tablet mode. If that icon is visible, click on it. This should bring up the touch keyboard. On this keyboard, the bottom-right key should be another keyboard icon. Select this icon and then select the pen option (third option.) This should change the touch keyboard into a transcription keyboard.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
Adam

I purchased a new X230 tablet in August 2013.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit ultimate, Office 2010 Pro, and all updates, Microsoft and Lenovo have been applied.  I have, or at least I believe I have, shut off the option of the screen dimming or the machine sleeping in battery mode and while plugged in.  I've noticed this since I first purchased the unit but haven't used it in tablet mode enough to worry about searching out a solution until now. My problem is when put into tablet mode, typically running OneNote, but I've also seen it occur with just the default windows screen up, after a few minutes of inactivity, the screen goes black and I've not been able to wake it back up and am forced to perform a hard shut down. I sure hope there is an easy fix for this.

Answer:X230 Tablet Black Screen Won't Wake

Oh, and I have the Gorilla glass outdoor screen model and all power management functions in the Bios are shut off. Please help, as right now tablet mode is essentially worthless as the black screen now is appearing right in the middle of writing with the stylus.  After a couple hard shut downs, the Synaptics drivers appear to be blown away and the NavPoint stops working and must have the drivers reinstalled.  Please help.....I'm missing my tablet functionality!!!  Please help.

The reference guide is not very clear.  Is the X230 Tablet compatible with any of the USB 3.0 docking stations: ThinkPad Port Replicator Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433615W)ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433715U - U.S.)ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 ? 90W (433815U - U.S.)ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 ? 170W (433835U - U.S.)Officially, according to the guide it only shows the ultrabase, however when you search for accessories by selecting the X230 Tablet it brings up others, but not the USB 3.0 series.  The X230 Laptop is compatible. Although it may not be worth the price as it seems to only have 1 USB 3.0 port and the rest are 2.0, price seems to be a $40 premium for the 1 USB 3.0. When it is on the docking station does it lock out the native USB ports in the chassis of the X230T?  An older Toshiba I had reccomended against using the Laptops USB when docked. Thanks

Answer:X230 Tablet Docking Station Compatability

"Officially" X230T does not work with any mini docking station or port replicator. If you still prefer mini docking station than ultrabase, then you can take a look: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/638559-x220-tablet-minidock-series-3-plus.html

When I start up my system, all appears to work OK.  Then, at some point both the pen and touch stop working.  When I turn the screen into laptop mode, I find that the mouse pointer and buttons work normally.  The only way to get the pen and touch to work again is to restart the computer. I ran the system update and all the drivers are up to date.  I also tried deleting all the input and screen drivers, and did a reinstall, but that didn't change anything. I'm wondering if it may be a BIOS issue, since I saw a posting that suggested that, but it was not for the x230. This is really driving me nuts...I'm out of ideas.

Hello,First, yes, I realize Windows 8 is not generally available yet, however, a solution may already exist considering the imminent release.I have a X230 Tablet with Windows 8 Enterprise. The 2 USB 3 ports are working, but only at USB 2 speeds (same transfer rates when hooking up a USB 3 device to either of those ports as I get hooking up to the AlwaysOn port on the other side (more or less 25 MB/sec).I never had Windows 7 on this tablet, so I don't have a comparison. However, on a X201 Tablet with a PCIExpress USB 3 add-in card I get transfer speeds of at least 100 MB/sec, which is about as close as you can get I think.Windows 8's (Microsoft's) USB 3 xHCI driver is installed (version 6.2.9200.16420).Are there better drivers available? Am I missing a setting somewhere (in the BIOS perhaps)? Thanks for any assistance,SA.

Answer:X230 Tablet USB 3 performs at USB 2 speeds (Windows 8)

I thought I already had checked the most obvious UEFI settings, but I guess not. In the USB category, there is a USB 3 option which was set to Auto. Based on the description, that looks like a good setting. However, I changed it to enabled, and now I have transferred rates of about 75 MB/sec. Still not as good as possible with some other controllers, but hopefully some better drivers are forthcoming.SA.

I use a X230 Tablet, 3434CTO, with 8 GB of RAM (two 4GB 1600HHz memory sticks, factory installed). My operating system is Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit.  Memory usage is often in the 80%+ range and the machine slows to the point of being functionally useless. I want to move to 12 or, if necessary, 16 GB of RAM. The part recommended by Lenovo is: Lenovo 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SODIMM Memory (1600MHz)Part number: 0A65724 Do I have to swap out both 4GB memory sticks or can I swap out just one? Thanks in advance.

What is the response time (in ms) of the screen on X230 Tablet?

Answer:What is the response time (in ms) of the screen on X230 Tablet?

It depends on overdrive level applied to the lcd panel. Typically it will be around 16 ms that can be improved to ~ 8ms by overdrive that also affects lifetime of the display. And no, there are no LCD panels with 2 ms response time, it is just marketing fluff (similar to PMPO audio power nonsense).

When I updated Windows 10 to the newest Version (Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit, Version 1607 Build 14393.82) the autorotate on my Thinkpad X230 Tablet is not working anymore. Using the rotate button the screen rotation changes but there is no screen change when putting the laptop into tablet mode or when rotating the laptop. With the "old" Windows 10 I had no problems with the autorotate function. I observe the following behaviour/errors:In the action center the button rotation lock is present, but doesn't change / unlock the rotation (it says it changes but the icon always stays on locked and there is no change). In the device manager the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 is listed under "unknown".Under "sensors" there were no entries. I added a Simple Device Orientation Sensor" but it didn't change anything. Other sensors all report the error that the driver cannot be started. A windows lcation provider is not availabe.Using the SensorDiagnosticTablet.diagcab it says that the windows location is turned off and cannot be turned on but in the action center/location the location service is "on".When I open the Lenovo Airbag Protection, the little laptop is moving according to the external inputs, so there is some detection of the motion. In the Tablet Shortcut Menu the button for enable autorotate is on and the laptop was calibrated. I already reinstalled all the drivers from the lenovo site (active protection system, dependencies, settings dependencies, graphics). I have a X230 Tablet with the Outdoor display, meaning it requires the digitizer pen and does not work with fingers. The pen that came with the tablet is not pressure sensitive. If at all possible, I would love to get a pressure sensitive pen, but I can't find a list of compatibility anywhere. Apparently there aren't all that many of these tablets out there in the Wild. If anyone can help point me in the direction of a pressure sensitive pen for my tablet, I would be very grateful. Answer:Upgrading Video Card in X230 Tablet?

Pardon my ignorance up front if I am wrong, I have an x220 and have not studied the x230 in any depth, but I suspect this isn't even possible, even on the x230.  On the x220, and I suspect it's much the same for the x230, the video card is a part of the intel chipset (it basically leeches cpu and ram power from the normal system cpu/ram and is not a dedicated removable/upgradable mobile graphics device with it's own cpu/ram like a mobile GeForce or mobile Radeon card). Perhaps there are new inventions on the market that can do the trick, I haven't been keeping up, but when I checked for the x220 their wasn't a viable open slot in the system for putting in such a dedicated mobile card.  The only option was an 'external' hack that allows one to use a dedicated desktop GPU card for when they come home with their system and dock it up to an external monitor.  Looked like a bit of work to set-up but once it was set up and running, it would allow for using a powerful GPU for games and graphic apps etc., while at home/office at least. Would be nice if the newest line of these tablet laptops had room for mobile GPU's, it's about the only thing missing for my interests, however that said, the integrated internal graphics work quite well from my experience, for mild gaming with the settings turned down and for graphic editing (most top 2D and 3D applications work surprisingly well, but far from as good as they would work with dedicated gpu, good ... Hello Community,so I recently installed Windows 8 on my X230 Tablet.Everything works fine so far besides my display wont rotate automatically. The rotate-key right under the screen works fine and I have used the Lenovo System Update to get all necessary drivers but the display still does not rotate automatically. Is there a setting that I am not finding or any software/driver that I have to install?

Answer:X230 Tablet - display won't rotate automatically

I solved that problem by installing the Win 7 driver "Tablet Shortcut Menu". The UI for that program doesn't work but at least auto screen rotation works perfectly.  Hope it helped.

Hello, I cant seem to find out how to activate the WLAN-Adapter under my freshly Installed Windows 7 x64 Professional on my x230 Tablet. Hi everyone:I am considering to upgrade my wireless adapter for my laptop. Currently I am using Thinkpad X230 Tablet with Intel Centrino Wireless N 2200. My laptop has bluetooth. I have questions:1. Does the bluetooth come with my wireless adapter? I mean that If I upgrade my wireless card, do I have to buy a card with wifi and bluetooth? 2. I am considering to upgrade to Intel 62205 AN. This is the linkhttp://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=INT-62205&show=p Is that worth to upgrade? (functionality, price, ...)  Is the product compatible with my current Thinkpad X230T?  3. Can I install 2 cards and run silmultanerously . It sounds greedy but I know a software, named "connectify"; it allows laptop to connect many networks silmutanerously, for example: 4G, Lan, wifi.  4. I see some people mention about Intel Ultimate 6300. What additional functionalities do I get compared to 62205  or Intel 2200? Thank you.

Answer:Upgrade Wireless Adapter for Thinkpad X230 Tablet

1. Bluetooth and wireless cards are separate on the ThinkPad X220, X220t, X230, and X230s. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/8276508687/in/set-721576320273504682. You would need an Intel 6205 card with Lenovo FRU number on it, generic one won't work. 2200 only operates in the 2.4 ghz bandwidth, while the 6205 can operate in both 2.4 and 5 ghz bandwidth. So the question is does your router have 5 ghz bandwidth and support MIMO?3. No you can't. The WWAN/mSATA slot would give an error message saying an unauthorized card is installed (1801 error). 4. 6300 card has 3 x 3 setup and operates in 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz range. Max speed of 450 mpbs6205 has 2 x 2 setup, 2.4/5 ghz range, and max speed of 300 mbps.2200 has 2 x 2 setup, but operates in the 2.4 ghz range and max speed of 300 mbps.

Hi,I am suspecting a hardware failure, but wanted to check the forums first anyway.I have an X230 Tablet running Windows 8.1 Update. Fingerprint software 6.0. Was working fine (i.e. swipe to power on and log on to Windows and the Lenovo Password Mgr) until this morning. No more green light on the sensor, no function. Windows says that the fingerprint sensor is not available. It was still showing up in Device Manager, I uninstalled it as part of some troubleshooting and it's not being detected anymore now.Any ideas other than hardware? Thanks,SA.

Answer:X230 Tablet fingerprint reader stopped working

It sounds like hardware failure but try one more thing:

Reboot into BIOS setup (by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen).
Go to the security -> fingerprint menu.
There's an option about clearing the fingerprint sensor storage (or something like that).
What happens?

Hello, does anyone have similar problem with installation of an ericsson H5321 wwan card? The wwan card was ordered from the official lenovo dealer. The card wasn't installed when I ordered the laptop, but the card itself was delivered separately. Answer:X230 Tablet and Ericsson H5321 wwan problem

Solution wasn't so simple... The Lenovo support changed a new Gobi 3000 wwan card. That was ok to the bios and laptop was running ok on windows 7. Everything worked well at least in Finland. So the Ericsson wwan card will not work current bios version. This is not mentioned on product catalog. The support changed this board without any costs. Windows 8 problems: Then I changed from win7 pro to win8 pro... Gobi 3000 drivers are not currently on Lenovo website, but you could find the drivers from other website. Drivers called LenovoGobi3kSetup.exe seem to be working ok on Windows 8. You'll find the link from the community to those drivers. ....but! It works until you rotate the display top of the keyboard. Then mobile broadband is disabled and there is no way to turn on this feature. Windows 8 troubleshoot says that the wwan switch is disabled and advices to enable the switch. But there is no any switch for wwan module!!! On windows 7 will work similary but you can switch wwan on when change the display rotation. Settinga are as well in FN+F5 button. But it will not work on windows 8 similary. It just disables all wifi actions. Solution for wwan switch enabling: Just install think vantage access for windows 7! It will give some errors, but ignore them. It will install finally and then you can switch wwan module again on. On my laptop this seem to be working now ok. I'm using think vantage acces only to enable the wwan modul... Read more

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

Hello, I recently upgraded to windows 8 and I have everything working so far except for the webcam. I've installed the drivers so that when I go into device manager under Imaging devices it lists Integrated Camera and Camera Plus and device manager says both of these are updated and working the fine. However, when I use the Camera app which I get to from Windows 8 metro all I see is a cartoon of a camera crossed out. The yellow webcam light does turn on, but it's not working. The same thing happens when I try to do a video recording in Microsoft OneNote 2007, which I used to be able to do.  I've tried to uninstall the webcam drivers and reinstall it, but it still isn't working. I've tried doing hardware scans and update scans in the Lenovo Solutions Center but it says everything is fine. Any suggestions would be really helpful. If I can't get everything to work in Windows 8 I'm switching back to Windows 7, which I made a backup disc of. Thanks,-Noora

Answer:X230 tablet Windows 8 upgrade, webcam not working

I think I finally fixed it actually, sorry about that. I just kept installing drivers from the Lenovo website and it's working now. The camera program that you access through Metro says the camera is only 0.9 pixels though, and I thought the camera was more than that.  Is there a way to tell if I've installed all the necessary drivers? I have done multiple software scans with Lenovo Solution Center but even when the camera wasn't working it said I had no updates, so that's why I kept installing drivers from the website.  Also, does anyone know the driver to make the wacom pen right click button work? I really miss that One thing I think is better with Windows 8 actually is the screen orientation change button. It's way faster than in Windows 7! I also like that it doesn't do it automatically, because I don't always want it automatic.

Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

I performed a clean install of Windows 10 and obviously it did not support auto rotate even with all the drivers that Lenovo System Updater helped me installed. One thread in this forum solved auto rotate in Windows 8. Incidentally accelerometer found its way in Sony's hard drive walkman HD5 before, which also has hard drive accidentally falling protection and screen auto rotating function. All you need is 2 pieces of software: 1. Thinkpad Tablet Shortcut menu                                                                 2. Thinkpad Active Protection System. The 2nd file is the one that will allow the accelerometer come to life. Installing this 2 software and the needed reboot. go to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\ThinkPad\Tablet Shortcut\' and double click on 'LENTBCTL' to run it. Then use your stylus to click the 'Settings' button at the lower left corner. Then you will find 'auto rotating' option. Tick the box ahead of it and following t... Read more
