X220 tablet - sound suddenly stopped working from speakers and headphone (but not bluetooth)

Question: X220 tablet - sound suddenly stopped working from speakers and headphone (but not bluetooth)

X220 tablet (about 2.5 yrs old, out of warranty) was working completely fine last night; this morning, no sound is coming from the laptop, either through speakers or through headphones (audio jack). I am, however, able to get sound through a bluetooth-connected speaker. I had hoped this was a software issue. Tried uninstalling/installing all sound devices, updating BIOS, updating drivers, system restore to previous date, rebooting a million times, etc. No joy. When I run the sound troubleshooter, it says that no speaker, headset, or headphone appears to be plugged in. The sound icon has a little red circle/white X next to it. When I try to plug in headphones, nothing happens -- does not seem to detect the event. When I press the mute and volume buttons on the tablet, no response. Also, under Device Manager -> Sound, video and game controllers, it lists only "Bluetooth Hands-free Audio" and "Intel Display Audio". I don't think either of these is the normal X220 audio driver, is it? What else should be there? I downloaded the Conexant Audio Software from Lenovo's site (this is what came up when I searched for audio drivers for the X220 tablet), and tried to install it, but halfway through, it said the install failed because it couldn't locate the device for the driver. This sounds like it's a hardware problem -- any way to verify? Also, which piece of hardware exactly? Is it the sound card (that's presumably integrated into the motherboard --> no easy fix)? I'm guessing it's not the speakers themselves since the headphone jack is also affected, but what is my best line of testing at this point to confirm that? If it IS the sound card, any suggestions on the best fix? Many thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X220 tablet - sound suddenly stopped working from speakers and headphone (but not bluetooth)

If it doesn't appear in the device manager, it sounds to me like the sound chip (codec) or some support chip has died. I'm not sure how exact you want the answer to be. I think on that model, the codec is a Conexant 20672. If I am correct, the normal fix is to replace the motherboard. Many x220 machines are still under warranty. If yours is, now would be a good time to use it. You can check here:

Hi everyone, I have a Lenovo X220 Tablet that has touch screen and pen. They suddenly stopped working today. The LCD screen still works pefectly fine, however. The touch screen is enabled on the touch settings. When I try to calibrate, it does not detect my finger or the pen. I also noticed that when I tried to reinstall the driver and it said "a supported tablet was not found on this system". I have the most recent bios. I am running Windows 7 that came with the laptop. All windows updates completed. Is it possible for the digitizer to be defective, but the LCD screen to work perfectly fine?Could it be just a ribbon failure?Which part would need to be replaced, if this is the case? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer:X220 tablet touch screen suddenly stopped working

Even though it looks like a single device, it is really 3 separate ones.  There is a basic panel.  There is a static discharge digitizer in the front to sense finger touches.  There is a second Wacom digitizer behind the panel to detect the pen.  Any of them can fail.  The wires in the cable can also crack.  Since both digitizers failed, I would first look in device manager to see if there could be a problem with a USB hub.  (digitizers both connect as USB devices.)  My next guess would be the cable.  Sorry I cannot be more definite.

The fact that the computer is five yes old, an important detail,  does not mean the computer is wore out.In some examples  some headphones plugs will damage the jack (receptacle) on the computer. So briefly, my processor has 6 jacks in the back and 2 in the front to connect my speakers to. In the back there is a Green, Pink x2, Black, Grey and Blue Jacks. In the front there is a Pink and Grey Jack.

Now I have two sets of identical speakers and having only one Green jack I connected them both to the green using an adapter. So basically the same sound came from all the speakers.

Then yesterday I decided to try make it more surround sounding and I found out that the Black jack is for some sort of other speakers. So I connected them, and I set my sound options to quadrophonic. And it worked beautifully. Then I had to leave and I turned of my computer.

When I turned it back on, the speakers plugged into the green one still worked while the speakers plugged into the Black jack don't work anymore. I tried switching them around and the speakers that were plugged into the green one still worked while the black didn't. So its not something with the speakers.

I set defaults to everything and retraced my steps but nothing works. When I do the test, I set it to quadrphonic and it shows 4 speakers, then it tests each one and the plugged into the green ones make a sound, the others don't. What went wrong?

I'm working in Windows Vista Ultimate and Ihere is some info about my pc.

I recently did a big update, which involved updating the BIOS (from version 1.91 to 1.93). Since then the speakers on the tablet, and headphones when attached, no longer produce sound. Sound works okay from the keyboard speakers. I've tried updating the driver (intel smart sound technology), as well as rolling back, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Nothing has worked so far. My best guess is that the BIOS update is responsible, since the tablet speakers and headphones also no longer work in linux, but did before the update. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions for a fix to try before downgrading the bios would be highly appreciated.

Anyone else encountered and solved this problem? I upgraded about 2.5 weeks ago and have looked everywhere for a solution. I finally got the wireless radio settings to apear when I press Fn+F5 but no bluetooth option exists. Today when I decided I had wasted enough time and tried to go back to Windows 7, it won't let me even though I still have Windows.old and it is whin the 30 day window. I feel stuck. I like Windows 10 but not having bluetooth makes me wish I would have left well enough alone and stayed with Windows 7. Anyone have a fix for either of these problems?

When I woke up this morning and went to my laptop every time I pressed a key it would register as multiple keys being pressed (for example pressing 'O' would registers as pressing P, O, I, and would turn down the volume). Upon noticing this I checked to make sure my regional keyboard settings were correct (they are). I then shut down my laptop and cleaned the keyboard with canned air. When I turned it back on my keyboard was simply not working. Everything except the mouse pad and power button won't do anything at all when I touch them. In summary I've done the following.-Made sure I have the correct regional keyboard settings (I do)-Cleaned the keyboard with canned air.-Attempted to travel to Middle-Earth for Elven tech support but Gandalf wouldn't let me pass.-Restarted my computer multiple times.-Plugged in an external USB keyboard to see if that would work (it did and is how I'm typing now).-Checked for foreign substances but none were found.-Did a virus scan. Update: Keys are working again but still registering every press as if multiple keys are being pressed.

Today the headphone jack on my T440s suddenly stopped working. I usually have external speakers plugged in, which didn't make sound today.Audio in general works fine with the build in speakers though.Once I plug in either headphones or my speakers (I tried different equip, all works on other devices), the sound from the laptop speakers stops, indicating that the headphones are recognized by the system. However, there is no sound coming from any external sound device. I already reinstalled the audio driver, however as I have both Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 15.10 installed and it stopped working on both today, I think a driver issue is unlikely. If it is indeed a hardware issue and the port is broken, is there any way to confirm this. Also, what could cause a problem like this?

Answer:[T440s] Headphone Jack suddenly stopped working

Hi Deeks,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Check the Playback Devices under Sound Properties (by going to Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices and see if the Headphone is being set as the default playback device. If not, click on it and set it as the default playback device, try to play a sample sound and observe.

You just need to reinstall the sound driver and install it one more time. Click here for sound drivers

The speakers for my dell XPS 8500 computer and my dell latitude 10 tablet stopped working on the same day. My computer speakers had been plugged into the monitor and working fine since I got the computer a few months ago. Both the desktop and tablet run windows 8. I have tried dell tech support, but they can not seem to figure it out. I am concerned that since both went out on the same day it could be related. One reason I feel that it may be a single issue is that on one occassion (when I first setup my tablet) my tablet stopped responding and my desktop monitor entered and would not exit standy mode at the exact same time. If anyone has any idea on what could be the cause of the speakers not working on both my desktop and tablet please let me know. I am posting this hear in case its some kind of windows 8 networking issue.

Answer:Desktop and Tablet Speakers Stopped Working

Since both of your computers are Dells, did Dell support have you run their online diagnostics for your system hardware? The online diagnostics are very much like the PC Doctor based Dell Diagnostics that are likely already installed on both of your Dells. The advantage the online diagnostics have is that they are often more detailed and more up-to-date.

If they didn't have you run them yet, they are free for you to use to troubleshoot your computers. Here's the link to the diagnostics home page --- Dell PC Diagnostics | Dell US --- Note that you can choose which diagnostics to run: 1) all diagnostics 2) diagnostics by symptom 3) diagnostics by component. If you don't have a lot of time, you could start by running the sound system tests.

Both your desktop and your tablet have Realtek audio, ALC3800-CG for the desktop, ALC3261 for the tablet. A feature of Windows 8 is a background service that functions as an Automatic Update for drivers . . . So, possibly both of your computers received a sound driver update on the same day ... or possibly a recent Windows Update arrived on the same day that just happened to affect your sound drivers.

I'll guess that you've already tested for sound with a pair of headphones on each computer?

If it seems likely to be an audio driver issue, you could try different drivers (newer or older, from Dell, Windows Update, or Realtek) ... with the Dell drivers likely to be your first choice. To go straight to the last driver that w... Read more

Hi everyone.I have the 5.1 Logitech surround sound speakers hooked up to my PC. It's the z-5500 version.

Today I went to listen to music and the speakers have stopped working. The music is very choppy, and the sound will change to different speakers, almost as if it's shorting out. For instance, you'll hear partial sound on the left-front speaker, then it'll change to the rear-back speaker, and the sound isn't constant. I also hear "pulsing sounds" coming from my subwoofer and all other speakers like every 5 seconds. I've tried different applications (itunes, vlc, windows media); same problem.

I haven't screwed around with any drivers or audio settings for these speakers. I know for a fact it isn't my soundcard, as I used headphones on another port and the sound is normal. I also have the speakers plugged into a UPS, so nothing electrical could have damaged it.

I'm running Windows 7 32 bit with no sound drivers installed. Default windows sound configuration is set up.

Any suggestions as to why these speakers just suddenly stopped working? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Answer:Logitech Speakers Suddenly Stopped Working

Well if you plug headphones in and the sound if normal, then its most likely to be the speakers themselves. Is the anyway you can plug the speakers into another PC and see if the problem persists?

I have a Trust TB-4200 A4 graphics tablet

Installed it over 6 weeks ago in windows7 RC 64bit with Vista drivers.

works prefectly

turned my machine on today and suddenly its stopped working with this:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

I havent touched anything, havent changed anything, I've done nothing.

Why the hell has this happened??!?!!? I'm scewed now and have to pothc about dual booting into XP just to get my artwork finished

Why has Windows7 suddnely decided to block my drivers that have been working perfectly fine for 6 weeks for no reason!?!?

Answer:Graphics tablet has suddenly stopped working ((Code 52)

iTunes9 killed it

even after uninstalling it and running 2 different registry cleaners the tablet drivers were still being blocked.

Was forced to do a clean install in the end as i simply couldnt find a resolution to get these previously working drivers working again.

Clean install, drivers working 100% perfectly as they always had done.

Avoiding iTunes9 from now on

I have a Satellite C855-1J2 running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I turned it on on the 21st December 2012 and installed five applications - the latest versions of Firefox, CeltX, Notepad++, Open Office and Microsoft Security Essentials (I removed McAfee). I also got all the latest Windows Updates. Since then I have not installed any other applications.

For three days afterwards, my laptop was running fine until, suddenly, the speakers stopped working. I can identify the exact incident which caused it. I had plugged in a pair of perfectly ordinary headphones using the standard headphone jack socket, powered the laptop down after I had finished listening but left the headphones plugged in.

When I turned the laptop back on the next day, no sound came from the headphones.
When I unplugged them, no sound came from the speakers.
I rebooted my machine and the speakers worked fine.

However, I am now in a position where every time I turn my laptop on, the speakers do not work and they will only function again when I next reboot. A little investigation of this problem shows the following...

Whenever I turn my laptop on and go to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Manage Audio Devices I see two items:

1) "Speakers - High Definition Audio Device - Not plugged in" with a greyed out speaker icon with a red arrow.

2) "Digital Audio (S/PDIF) - High Definition Audio Device - Default device" with a coloured external amplifier icon (looks a bit l... Read more

Answer:Satellite C855 - Speakers suddenly stopped working

The issue you have described above looks to me like the speakers would not be chosen as ?default? device but the Digital Audio (S/PDIF).
Somehow the sound driver cannot detect the speakers from the first system boot.

I have no idea why this happened but I?ve got two proposals:

*1)* Uninstall the sound driver from the system. Download the newest sound driver from Toshiba page and install it after the notebook has been rebooted first.

*2)* If sound driver installation does not help, last resort would be the system recovery.

Check your volume mixer under the notification area, check your speaker settings to see if its on mute or turned down.

If everything is normal, go into the device manager and look under sound, video, and game controllers.

Hi everybody,
I like many others am experiencing problems with my rocketfish bluetooth mouse. Up until now it had worked perfectly fine for me on both my desktop and my current laptop computer. Recently the batteries died and since that point the mouse has not worked.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers, letting windows install them automatically and various other things. All of which say they work correctly...except my mouse continues to flash green and not connect.

If i try to add a device it will pick up the mouse instantly, install the software and say the device is now ready to use. However within 30 seconds the bluetooth mouse icon disappears and I'm back to square one.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Hi friends,

My satellite c640, internal speakers suddenly stopped working but works fine when earphones or any external sources are connected
Is it a hardware problem?

I?m using win 7 64bit and I tried to install drivers but seems to be a hardware problem

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C640 internal speakers suddenly stopped working

I?m not sure if this is a hardware problem.
You may have to check some settings.

In control panel -> sound -> playback tab.
There you should see the speakers chosen as default device.
You can also click right on these speakers and you should see some options:
? speaker configuration
? test
? disable
? and so on?.

Test the speaker firstly. In my case some short bell sound appears. You can also mark the speaker and click on Properties button. There you will see a second window with some tabs. Check the second tab called LEVEL. There you can change the sound level.

What happen exactly when you try to reinstall sound driver? Do you get any errors?

Hey guys, I have been using my Laptop with my Bluetooth speaker for a long time.
Today, suddenly I would not find my Supertooth speakers under "Devices" where it has always been.
Uninstalled Bluetooth drivers, installed them again, still, cannot find it. I cannot add it either.

When I went into the Bluetooth option it said "Error with local device". Weird. Restarted my Laptop, went into BIOS and cannot find any Bluetooth ON/OFF thing, and I am sure I had one there before.

I booted my Laptop again, went into Windows Mobility Center and I see that Bluetooth is "OFF".
In services all Bluetooth services are started and running, tried stopping them and starting them again, still, no luck.
Any ideas? thanks!

After that, I went into BIOS and even tho I didn't see any "Radio" option or any "Bluetooth" option I rested all settings to defaults. Booted up again, installed drivers again, viola, my Bluetooth started working again. No idea why this happened at first, or how. But this is how I got it fixed. BTW. It was working one day, and then the next it wasn't. I've tried all the common fixes, like checking to see if everything is plugged in correctly, looking in Device Manager to make sure the volume is up and there are no "mute" boxes checked. Device Manager says the card is in working order. All of that, but I'm getting no sound. I know the speakers work because I'm running the sound through a Pioneer receiver and when I set it on "tuner" I can hear sound. So that's not the issue.

I'm thinking it's some kind of driver conflict or something, but I haven't added any software lately, so I don't know why things would've changed.

The bottom line is, any help you could give me would be appreciated much.

Answer:Sound on my PC stopped working suddenly

It would be useful to know brand, model, OS, and age of computer.
Have you looked in the device manager for red, yellow, or black flags indicating a driver problem?
If you have driven your computer to high volume for very long you may have "burned out" the sound components. In that case, if you have on-board sound, you will need to install a PCI sound card.

Earlier today I had my laptop connected to some speakers with a male to male jack, and everything was going fine. I unplugged that cable (no music was playing at this point, so I don't know if the problem started then or not) and put it into sleep mode. Later I woke it back up, and suddenly there no was sound. I checked the Device Manager, and the sound systems supposed are working properly, nothing's muted. I plugged a pair of headphones in, adjusted the system volume and could only hear the faintest sound when I maxed it out. Also, the little bubble, "You have plugged a device into the audio output jack" didn't pop up when I put the headphones in or out.

Actually, I just double checked the headphones, and they seem to be working decently. They are some old cheap ones, which is probably why they didn't seem to work at first. I have to find my good ones, I suppose.

What seems to be the issue?

Answer:Sound suddenly stopped working

Go into device manager, delete the audio devices, and reboot. Hopefully it'll redetect everything. If not, you'll want to go to computer make (HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc ) web site and download and install the drivers.

Hi there,

I don't know what the hell I did wrong... but I was playing a song on Windows Media Player, then I paused it and went to do something else... I come back, press play, and no sound comes. I can't play CDs, mp3s, anything on websites, any of the Windows sounds, etc. Nothing plays.

I tried unplugging the speakers and plugging them in again... (I had the same issue with my mouse about a week ago, it just didn't work, and this solved the problem). However, that didn't do a thing. Then I tried restarting, that didn't do anything either, since I didn't hear my start-up music. I'm soundless The green light on the speakers is on. I just can't hear anything. It's really odd. I've paused and played songs millions of times, and it just didn't play this time...

Did I press some keys that disabled the sound or what? I don't know if this is a hardware problem or something on the computer settings. But likely not hardware since the light is on... ah i don't know

Or maybe it is a hardware problem.. I went to my device manager, and looked under all my sound stuff. Everything is enabled. Hmm.. I have no idea what else to do. No one else uses this computer.

And on the little taskbar by the clock.. the sound thingy isn't muted or anything. I've kind of poked around my sound settings in my control panel, and nothing seems wrong. My volume control panel is all normal.

When I play a song it appears to play, (shows the spinning graphic, i have ambience: randomizati... Read more

So a few months ago, I built the computer I'm currently using. Everything ran relatively smoothly up until a day or two ago, when the audio just stopped functioning. I've done just about everything I can think of, with both speakers and headphones. I've followed up on just about every lead i've managed to find online, but I'm still open to suggestions. To walk you through exactly what I was doing leading up to the problem: I was using my computer in my room, audio functioning perfectly. I power it off and unplug everything, and carry it to a room opposite to mine. I plug it in and set up my monitor, mouse and keyboard. Now, here's the unusual part. I plugged a phone line that was connected to my into the port on the back of my computer. I'd never done that before and to be honest I was curious. Nothing happened, and while I messed with some settings for a little bit, it was uneventful. I then powered the computer off, returned it to my room, and set everything back up. Before putting on my headphones, I received a popup notification from Razer Synapse, asking me If I wanted to use my settings from the cloud or my local settings. I selected Cloud. It was at this point that I noticed that my audio had ceased to work. When I plugged in my headphones, I could sometimes get 2-3 seconds of almost clear audio, but then it would cut out again. Since then, I've uninstalled, then re-installed Razer Synapse, but It made no difference and I'm not certain it's even related. I'm in the pro... Read more

The sound on my laptop stopped working suddenly . It had been working fine for about 1 year since I upgraded to Windows 10 .  It says "No output device is installed " under playback devices .But the IDT high definition Audio Codec shows up in Device Manager . If I tried to update driver, it fails . I can hear audio if I connect an external sound card , but not just regular headphones or from the laptop's speaker .When i tried Troubleshooting , it failed with the error code 0x80131018I have already tried all steps recommended by HP Support Assitant .Even tried Restting the laptop (all applications were deleted , but files restored) , but still no sound .

My sound has always worked, except tonight when I opened a game that I've played many times before with sound, there was none. The speaker in my dashboard has a red cross on it.
In the properties of my Realtek HD Audio it reads: "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled.  An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)"
I simply have no use for a PC with no sound. Can someone please tell me how to get it back? I've tried updating the driver, uninstalling and reinstalling it, reseting my pc but still no sound.
Thank you in advance.

Hi, I have a computer approximately 18 months old and the sound has suddenly stopped working.  All I get from my 5.1 surround sound creative speakers is a hiss or buzz every time the computer should be playing a sound - this is the same for streaming internet clips, cd's dvd's and system noises.  Until Monday it was all working fine.My system is:AMD 64x2 5200+  2MB ramMotherboard is ASUS M2N-E SLIsound device listed is C-Media CM6501 like sound device (being a bit of a novice I'm not sure what this means  )i have trawled through various posts and tried several tests and changes to settings but am beginning to think the problem must be hardware related.  All the speaker tests tell me that sound is working correctly. I'm not sure this is relevant but ever since I got the computer I have experienced intermittent loud "bumps" (like a thud of bass) through the speakers?Any help or advice appreciated, thanks.

My sound was working earlier today. I was listening to music on youtube, and paused it in order to read something off a different website. When I went to re-play the song, my sound had suddenly stopped working.

I've tried system restore and updating drivers. Everything seems to be working correctly, but no sound will play. There are no errors in regards to the driver, card, or playing sounds.

However, when I go to the sound mixer and there is a sound playing, no green line will appear indicating volume. Same if I click on the mixer and adjust the volume.

Can anybody help me?

Difference I have is that I get message "C:Windows\system32\dssend.dll" and in Media player notice says "is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using original installation"...which I did but still the same. I also ger the dssend.dll message in some incoming e-mail stating picture is poor quality.....when it is not. All this happenned out of the blue, I had not installed any new programmes or devices. Anyone got any clues to resolve please.

Onboard Realtek HD audio on the Asus P6T board.

I noticed last night when I tried to play something the sound wasn't working anymore. It hadn't been restarted in a week, so I'm not sure what could have caused that.

I have ensured playback devices are enabled and I have set both the 5.1 speakers and the C-Media USB headphone/mic audio device to default. Didn't make a difference, no sound coming out of the headphones or speakers.

In the Asus ExpressGate I can go to YouTube and my speakers work fine, so it's gotta have something to do with Windows.

I ran windows troubleshooting on Playing Audio and it says "Hardware changes might not have been detected" with a little yellow exclamation point and no other options but to close. It does say detected next to it though, so I'm not sure.

It happened all of a sudden, so I'm not sure what the deal is. I'm downloading the new Realtek audio drivers stickied at the top of this forum and hopefully that may make a difference.
I checked Device Manager in safe mode and it shows no little yellow exclamations indicating an issue. I cannot pull up Device Manager in regular mode, and I've tried to do a SFC /scannow which also doesn't work.

I also cannot get system restore point to open from the control panel, system, uninstall a program. So somethings farked up with Windows.

Hi, all. I was listening to youtube music late last night for a while, and all was fine. When I woke this morning and tried to play music, no sound. Any help would be so appreciated! Thank you.

A friend of mine has a PC which is pre-installed with Windows7. The sound problem arised a few weeks back. He called me and told me that his computer has stopped emitting any sound. I went to his place to have a look at it and I was puzzled by wat I saw. According to Windows7, everything is as it should be and sound is supposed come out, but no sound it coming out the speakers. I've checked everything from the advanced volume control to device manager and everything is fine. He has Realtech HD installed and there's nothing wrong with it since its configurations application show that everything is fine. There are no error messages at all. The default audio device is set on "Speakers", which to my knowledge is it what its supposed to be. Changing it to High Definition didnt help either. Every media plays without any problems except that there's no sound. I've tried Driver Roll-back, updating drivers, System Restore to no avail. Sound Troubleshooter says everything is fine. I can here a bit of static when I plug and unplug the speakers and headphones from all audio jacks, also the computer can see wen I plug and unplug speakers meanin the audio jacks are workin properly. Am I missing something here? Is there anything that I havent done/tried? I'm not really a tech-savvy, but I sure know my way around a computer, both software and hardware. Hey all,

I've got an annoying problem on my hands. I just replaced my case, and when I turn on the computer, and try to listen to some music.. Theres nothing..

I was confused, so I tried turning up the volume with no luck, checked if the jacks were used correctly, they were. Finally I tried to reinstall my mobo drivers, and that didn't work either.

So I don't have any sound now..

Someone help please? I really don't to buy a new soundcard right now.

Answer:Onboard sound suddenly stopped working?

Changing the case might or might not have something to do with it.Is everything in the Sound and Audio devices control panel, present and correct ? Is there any new hardware or software that might be causing conflicts.Did you knock a wire loose when changing case ? If all else fails, sound cards are not toooo expensive.

I recently upgraded to DirectX 9. In this case it was not a good idea, as I've lost sound. I keep getting an error message when I shut down pertaining to Ddhelp. Searching MS, Google, and TSG, I have determined that the problem has to do with an incompatability with my soundcard Creative AWE 64, and the lack of driver support for it that will correct this problem.

Running Win 98 on a dinosaur Compaq 233 w/64 RAM (max). Running the DirectX.diag it indicates the incompatability problem. Therefore, I have determined that I must return to a previous edition of DirectX. there does not appear to be any method for doing this, other than using the extractor tool, and reinstalling an earlier version.

I'd appreciate any thoughts, ideas, experiences concerning this matter.

Ok guys this problem happened last march/april ish and I tried a number of things at the time to fix the issue but with no luck. I just got done working out of state for the summer and did not have my pc with me so I'm trying to have another go at fixing the problem. Summary of the issue- no problems ever with sound until one day it just stopped working. Both headphones and speakers wouldn't work even if they were plugged in. I wasn't getting any "no audio devices detected" kinds of errors or anything like that. So I tried reinstalling the realtek HD audio drivers (i was just using onboard sound at the time) and no luck. I also tried doing a few system restores to before the issue and that didn't do anything either. Finally I bought a pci-e sound card, a sounblaster cause thats all the local best buy had, installed that and still no luck with either speakers or headphones. Today I tried removing the sound card and using on board audio and still no luck. Audio device manager will recognize that I plug in my headphones into either the front speaker jack or the one on the back but just doesn't produce sound. I even opened up the pc and looked at the connections on the mobo to make sure the ones for audio hadn't come lose and that doesn't seem to be the issue either. Please any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance

Answer:sound stopped working completely, headphones and speakers

Post a screenshot of the Device Manager, Sound section, for starters. I'll try to help you.

When you had the SoundBlaster installed, you need to disable the integrated (Realtek) audio so there are no conflicts. Also, you would need to disconnect the front panel headset/mic connection to the motherboard and connect it to the SoundBlaster to have the front panel jacks work. The SoundBlaster would have needed to be set as the default playback device, instead of Realtek if it was still enabled.

I am waiting for Creative to get back to me hopefully, but it's been a few days and I am anxious to figure out what is going on here. A few days ago after starting up my computer I noticed I had no sound coming out of my speakers. After checking to be sure they weren't muted or unplugged (my computer oddly stated the speakers were working, but unplugged!?) I assumed they had gone bad but since they were working perfectly the day before I kept messing around and eventually realized they were fine after plugging them direct to my ipod as well as to another speaker port in my computer. While looking at Creatives web site I did see one mention of "disabling any webcam microphone" leading me to assume there has been some conflicting issues in the past but it did not go into more detail. I had installed a new Logitech webcam 9000 a week prior to this issue and on that same day installed some of the Windows Live components. Everything had worked fine all week and I had made a few videos. Prior to this I had already been using a Logitech webcam for the whole year that I have had this computer, with no issues. I've never had a seperate mic to plug directly into the soundcard- the only thing plugged into it was the speakers.

My computer says the soundcard is working properly and is enabled. I also did a driver update search and it said I had the latest driver. But I cannot get any sound out of the card. In researching the problem I noticed several peo... Read more

I bought this laptop last month in November.
Anyways, around a week or two ago, the sound suddenly wouldn't work.

It started making weird noises when I put in headphones, and the speakers just made no noise at all ever.
I did lots of weird things -- such as system restore, re-installing sound drivers but nothing worked until I updated the bios then everything went fine and the sound worked again.

However, today, the sound just suddenly stopped working again. I tried to re-install the current bios but InsydeFlash says, "The version of the ROM file is the same version of the BIOS" and just closes.

I searched the internet for an older version of the bios but when I try to install it, InsydeFlash says, "The version of ROM file isn't newer than version of BIOS" and of course I know that but then it closes too!

I'm not really good at computers or anything so any help at all would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite C650 - sound just suddenly stopped working

I recommend checking some options firstly;
- check if mute is not enabled
- check if all volume controls are set to higher value
- check if sound would appear using headphones

If this would not be successful, then you should reinstall the sound driver.
Firstly go to device manager and uninstall the sound driver. Reboot the unit
Then download the sound driver from Toshiba page and install it again. Reboot once again and test the sound.

Dear reader,

Two days a go, out of the blue, my laptop doesn't give me any sounds over the speakers anymore. I've never had this problem and it is really a burden for me.
Actions I've taken so far:
- Check whether sound works with headphones - it does.
- Reinstall Realtek HD audio driver from realtek website - done, no changes
- Reinstall Audio Driver from Toshiba website - done, no changes
- Even updated the ATI HD sound driver - done, no changes

The model I'm using is the Satellite C855-255.7

The reason I'm not directly assuming my soundcard is broken/corrupted is the fact that through headphones, the audio works fine.

I would like to get suggestions for more actions to take, or a link/description of a fix for my problem.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Wouter Pol

Answer:Satellite C855-255 sound suddenly stopped working

It is really strange that for no apparent reason speakers stopped working. In my opinion it has nothing to do with sound card or preinstalled sound driver.

When you start some music on your PC and open sound properties > playback device what is the status of the speakers there? Be sure entry speakers is not disabled.

Any issues with Tecra S series with defective sound cards?

What do you mean by "Not working" exactly?

1) Do you see the Sound Device in Device Manager?
2) Can you select the device in control Panel -> Sound&Audio Devices->Audio ?
3) Does the Volume icon appear in the System Tray?
4) Have you tried muting and unmuting the main volume?
5) Can you hear a beep sound in MSDOS when you fill the command line buffer with characters?
6) Have you updated the BIOS to the latest version?

The sound in my L650 just stopped working all of a sudden. It was ok, and then nothing.

When plugging headphones, I only hear a crackling sound, that keeps the same volume regardless of system volume being 100% or mute.
I have no other way of testing sound output (neither hdmi cables or USB speakers).

Nothing was installed recently. Drivers are up to date. Restart didn't solve it. Uninstalling and reinstalling sound controller either.

All seems fine on the processing part (equalizer and sound bars move).

Could it be something got physically detached/unplugged/broken inside?

Sound on laptop-speakers is great (Harman/Kardon) but is it possible there is a problem with the mini-jack for the headphone?

Hello,I have had an issue with my laptop audio for a while.when I plug in my headphones, the sound came through both headphone and speakers.I have installed latest audio drivers from hp website, but headphone does not shows up neither in playback devices nor in device manager, under audio input and outputs. How can I manage this issue in order to get the sound from the headphones only?

Answer:sound come through both headphone and speakers

Hello @alirezab92,  Try this first : 1. Go into Control Panel, then Sound.2. Look for the Recording tab.3. Select your microphone/headset as the default device, and press OK. If these steps do not work then, I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the audio driver.Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below.  If this does not work, and you still hear audio from both the speakers and your headphones, please follow the next step. The next step will be to run a diagnostic program Using Automated Troubleshooting (Windows 8). This should help with the audio out issue.    Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again !!  **Click the White Thumbs Up Button on the right to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GBL84I am not an HP Employee

I have removed Norton and reinstalled the sound driver to no avail (sound does not work even with Norton uninstalled). I have also re-flashed the BIOS as well.

Dell Inspiron E1705
Windows XP SP3
Norton Internet Security 2011
ATI X1400 graphic card

Answer:Sound only from headphone but not speakers

The beep is coming from the internal speaker, not the external speakers.

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

I have got problem with sound in Vista Home Premium. My laptop works perfect till yesterday since I have bought it. Yesterday, I put it into sleep mode and after it resumed, sound is gone either from notebook speakers or the headphone. I checked installed windows update and uninstall them. Moreover, I also make system restore to the day before yesterday. I have already uninstall and reinstall the sound driver (Realtek HD Audio) but the sound is not coming yet. No yellow ? in device manager and everything seems to work. It looks like speakers are working since I can hear some noise whenever it is supposed to make sound. My sound driver is up to date.

My notebook specification are as follows:
Toshiba Satellite A205-S5859
Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 (pre-installed in the notebook)
Realtek HD Audio driver for Sound
Toshiba Software Modem

Hope what I have posted have enough information. Please give me some good advise to bring my sound back.

My X60 Tablet has suddenly stopped responding to my pen. One day, it was working, and the next day, it wasn't. And it hasn't worked since. It won't move my cursor or click; it doesn't respond to the pen at all. I know my pen works because I could use it on another X60 Tablet, but not mine. It's really frustrating becuase I need to use my pen for certain things, but I can't. Can anyone offer me any help or advice? Does someone know how to fix this problem? Please respond ASAP!!

I have the same problem. It is really annoying. Support had no better idea than have me reinstall XP. Well, guess what, even that didn't fix it. Also tried win7 now.I want to have the old driver 2.x back, but I can't find it. Does anyone know how to get it?

Welcome to the Support Forums!
In the Control Panel window find Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices section and open it. Then select the Sounds and Audio Devices. A new Window should open, select the Audio tab (top line of buttons) and click on it.
In the Sound Playback section: from the drop down menu, are your Bluetooth Speakers listed as the audio output device?

The PC sound is NOT the ATI as you have listed. It is IDT audio according to the Dell site.

This is a problem that has happened twice before. At first I thought it was a fluke, but now I'm very concerned. Restarting my computer, or trying to go back to recovery a week ago has worked, but I don't know what's causing the problem. I get no sound whatsoever from any app, player, window, etc. I just downloaded the latest audio driver, but that did nothing.

Answer:No sound from speakers or headphone jack

if recovering via restarting or recovering the system helps then its for sure not a hardware issue. Any application which you installed could have cause this issue? What machine are you on btw?

hey guys!! so a week ago i was listen to music and that no problem, then that night i ran a windows update to update my whole laptop!! so i did it and when i woke up my sound was gone, from both my speakers and my headphone jack. i still have sound when i plug it into my TV with an HDMI cable, but that is all!! i have tried going one version back on my software and also re-downloading the software. so i am not sure what the problem is anymore. pls help guys!!

Answer:No sound from speakers or headphone port

Check start/control panel/sound.
Make sure the right output device is set as default.
Updating sound drivers can the default device to change,
especially considering that your video card has onboard sound.
That is probably why you have audio on the HDMI.

Hello. Download and install a fresh copy of the Realtek audio driver. If doing that doesn't fix the problem, switch to the windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked .7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, sometimes you have to restart, sometimes not.[To get back to the Realtek driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If the headphones still don't work after doing that, it is because of hardware failure.

I'm pretty much when it comes to these stuffs.. so here it goes..

In terms of events:

Had winamp running some mp3 files in background - > No probs (have been running these files for more than an year now, never had an issue)
Tried opening skype -> at first no probs

skype upgraded -> again no probs
after its loaded -> my speakers went whoosh with the skype starting up sound & stopped playing any sound suddenly..

I had a doubt whether any virus or anything was wrong, so I ran malware bytes & sfc /scannow .. had no issues popup in either of them.

Rebooted system after these scans & sound is not yet back
Just wanted to double check if at least headphones were working, a big relief ! They do
Just in case if it matters.. when I tried looking in Devices troubleshoot, it had only Base System Device doesn't have an driver!

then tried Microsoft Fix Troubleshooters:

no prob detected in either of them.

What should I do next ? I tried googling & was scared to test different methods listed around, I didn't want to break anything around. I didn't want to uninstall the sound device, as I feared, what would happen if it doesn't & even my headphones stop functioning now

And will there be any probs if I continue using headphones with speaker not functioning ?

Answer:Speakers stopped functioning suddenly !

What is shown as the Default Playback Device? Your "Speakers" should be set as the default playback device.

I have a dual boot of Fedora and Windows, and when I boot into Fedora, my headphones work fine. When I boot into Windows 7 64bit, my headphones don't work. My laptop speakers work fine however, and I tried re-installing drivers. I made sure that my headphones are the default playback device, and I only have one headphone jack.

Other people who had this issue solved it by replacing their audio jack, but for me that is not a problem because the audio jack works fine when I boot into Fedora.

Please help!

Answer:Laptop speakers working, but headphone jack not working only on Window

Normally, the "Speakers" (PC sound) is set as the Default Playback device and not Headphones. In fact, newer RealTek sound systems do not even show the Headphones when plugged in.

Are you using the correct sound drivers? Not the generic Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec.

What all is listed in the Device Manager, Sound section?

Good day,
Thanks for reading.
I recently installed Win 8 (not upgrade) on my tablet. One of the downsides has been that I now cannot get my built-in 3G to work as the FnF5 button does not bring up the expected dialogue.
Please can you help me.
Moderator comment: Subject edited for clarification.

Answer:X220 tablet - post Windows 8 - FnF5 not working so 3G not working

Hey George,
Are you receiving dialogue at all? If so, what is coming up? Additionally, are other FN keys working as intended?
With your recent upgrade to Windows 8 have you upgraded everything that you could prior to the upgrade, and upgraded what Windows 8 drivers are available? I have seen success with updating the power manager driver, as well as the Hotkey Features Integration Driver. The Hotkey driver has up to Windows 7 Driver, it may possibly help your issue, but make sure you back up, and have the capability to rollback to the previous driver. Good luck and please keep me posted on your progress.
Thank You.

Hi All, I have a HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k200na which runs Windows 10 with Beats Audio As of last night the laptop is refusing to play any sound via the built in speakers.Headphones work fine (both Bluetooth and wired) and it seems that the PC isn't recognising that the headphones have been removed. I'm not sure if its caused by a hardware or software issue. I have updated, uninstalled and reinstalled the sound drivers to no avail.  When searching this issue online most people advise a work around, in which in the playback devices settings you disable headphones and set speakers as default device. However, even with the most up to date drivers my speakers and headphones are displayed as 1 single device.  Further to this I have seen you can disable Jack detection in Realtek HD Audio Manager. Unfortunately, whenever i try and run HD Audio Manager the window immediately closes and Beats opens in its place. Beats Audio (at least my version) has next to no settings and this option is not available to me.  Any advice would be great. A link to a new version of Beats software could be advantageous if one exists. Any other work arounds also welcome.

I have spent majority of today looking online for answers on how to fix this issue and have found nothing that works.

The laptop model is a HP Pavillion dv6-1007tx.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: When I plug in a HDMI cable to the laptop, sound comes through my TV.

I have used the headphone on the notebook, and after I unplugged it, the notebook speakers are not working, only if I leave the headphone jack inside (I push it inside until I feel some resistance).
It was the first use of the headphone, and before it the speakers worked properly, and also the headphone still working properly.
Any suggestions?

Check please ?playback devices? in sound properties and be sure the speakers are enabled and set them as default device.

I recently had a computer problem and brought it to a computer store to get it fixed. They erased most of my stuff but fixed it.

Well my sound seems to come out through my speakers and headphones. In volume control the wave seems to affect my volume. If I have volume control muted, and the wave unmuted and high, volume WILL come out. This is verrrry confusing to me.

I dont know if its my audio driver problem.I have conexant HD-audio smartaudio 221 according to device manager.I tried updating the driver but it ended up removing it and saying NO AUDIO DEVICE.I tried rollbacking but it didnt work so i system restored back to the beginning.

So now I am unable to play videos or games because its too loud in my house. Can anyone explain what wave means, suggest the proper sound audio device, explanation as to why sound comes through both speakers and headphones,etc..

Im not really good with tech stuff too and cant be forced to go back to the computer store.I think I fixed this myself last time but forgot what I did.

Btw I have a Compaq Presario C700 Notebook Windows XP

Sorry for the wall of text

Answer:Trouble with sound card/headphone/speakers.

I believe the 'wave' option is used when you're playing music, e.g. different volume control than normal system volume. It sounds like it's working like it's meant to.

What's the problem exactly? The sound doesn't work? Is too soft? Is too loud? Just post your exact problem please

I've had this laptop G510 for a lil over a year, but this problem just arose this week.  When I plug in my headphones into the audio jack, the sound still comes from the laptop speakers. I have to move the jack around to get the sounds to come from the headphone.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio device drivers and restarting the laptop, but the problem persists. Has anyone experienced this problem and have solution ideas? (It seems like a hardware issue, but I'm not sure how to fix it if it is a hardware problem)

Answer:G510: Headphone Plugged In- Sound from speakers

Hi Tsukari07,

i bought the Toshiba Satellite L510/030 Notebook (brand new) today from smith electronics. I've played around with it several times and its sound worked perfectly through both my speakers and headphones but all of a sudden it stopped working through my speakers (but I could still hear it through my headphones) and when i check my soundcard it says that it's working properly.

I don't understand -- what happened? What did I do? I only installed itunes and it said some sort of warning about some toshiba thing needing to be reinstalled.

I have no idea how it happened.

please help me.

I have a ASUS laptop running win 7 64 bit. out of the blue the sound stopped working. no sound will come from the internal speakers, though sound is being registered in the various volume control screens. If i plug speakers into my headphone input, the sound comes out. IVe tried all the various volume/sound settings (the obvious fixes) with no luck. can someone suggest some other possibilities that might cause this problem?

Thanks so much for your time.

Answer:Got sound from my headphone jack abut nothing from speakers

These systems are auto sensing what is plugged in. You can try reinstalling the sound driver as one thing. Another is a "recycle" of the device - go to the Device Manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the device and then LEFT click "Uninstall" - DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the device. If the status with Windows was corrupt this will fix that.

I usually listen to music with speakers through the headphone jack. When I unplug the speakers, the music plays through the stock laptop speakers like it is supposed to do.

However, all of a sudden, the sound has only worked through these external speakers. It plays fine through the headphone jack, but when I unplug the speakers, the laptop speakers do not work.

I have restored the computer to an earlier point that I know they were working, but still nothing.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1705.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey folks, I've upgraded my X220 Tablet to W8 when it has been released. All is running fine. Okay, I deinstalled PC Doctor and several other Lenovo apps which are supported for W7 only but this has not been a lack for me. Since two days, after using the tablet functionality (touch + pen) the touchpad and trackpoint didn't work any more. Had that some time ago, when I suspended the machine in tablet-mode. Afterwards the touchpad and trackpoint were disabled. I could enable both by hitting FN+F8. But this shortcut doesn't work any more. Does anyone know, how to restore the FN+F8 shortcut? I found out the application behind the FN+F8 key can be found in C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\UltraNav Utility\UNAVOSD.exe UPDATE: Driver version is already at cheerskyoshiro
