X220 Tablet + Windows 8 + Windows 7 + Ultranav + More....

Question: X220 Tablet + Windows 8 + Windows 7 + Ultranav + More....

Ok first off, I do love Lenovo, it's about the best computer I've ever owned. With that said, there is going to be some complaining going on here, but I hope it's both constructive and instructive as well as observed and addressed. #1. Applies to both Win 7 and Win 8 (I'm dual booting both Operating systems). The ultranav drivers/software are pretty bad. First and foremost, "Middle Click Mouse Button". By default on my shiny new Windows 8 clean install, the mouse and trackpad work great, with some features missing because of generic drivers, but Whallah! The middle button functions naturally and perfectly as a middle mouse button. Upon installing (and then immediately removing) Ultranav, the middle mouse functionality disappears and your stuck with a dopey scrolling button... Didn't anyone ever tell the driver department that handles this that regular middle mouse button functionality handles scrolling by default in most modern browsers/applications, there is no need to over-ride this default functionality at all, and in the process making it worse. Please ditch the zoom/scroll options and just give us a middle mouse button (or at least make it an available option in Ultranav). Some of the features in Ultranav work great in Windows 7, edge scrolling on the trackpad, palm recognition, etc., being able to speed up the red keyboard joystick thingy, add acceleration, etc.. The recommended Win 8 drivers for Ultranav are also way behind/dated vs. the current Win 7 Equivalent, not sure if the newest win7 version will work on win8,but the recommended the win 8 version from the beta page doesn't even have options for what the middle button function should do. Bottom line, most of Ultranav is fine, but it NEEDS "middle click" as an option. period. #2. Function keys. Overall just great. I have an improvement suggestion, was not able to reverse engineer some sort of custom/hack solution at this point. Basically allow the function modifier key to work with more keys to increase it's versatility. A perfect example of this, would be to hold function and instead of pressing numblock, just press the numpad key you wanted. This is perfect for advanced applications that use the numbpad for various hotkeys, where switching back and forth between numbpad on/numbpad off is a pain, as it uses the I,O,P etc. keys for hotkey/keyboard shortcuts as well. If this is possible, it would be a huge and welcome upgrade to our systems and I hope you persue this if it is physically possible. Adding support to existing/older (barely) systems ups your reputation for future purchases. #3. Windows 8 drivers are currently a bit of a mess, I'm sure this will all be addressed in time and I have both Win8 and Win7 going until it is so not a huge deal so long as it is addressed at some point shortly, and is in general to be expected, but far from an A+ rating. Not seeing any Win 8 Specific drivers for the Wacom functionality but haven't researched this fully or tested it with Drawing applications on Win 8 just yet, obviously it works amazingly well on Win 7. I'll add more if I remember/think of anything else, but for me, #1 is of huge importance. Right now I'm foregoing ultranav entirely because the features I am missing without it, in no way are more important than having a middle click button that is by default available and working great using generic Windows drivers. So we know this is possible, and it should be addressed in the next update. I had to install something called Marble Mouse on Windows 7 to get a hacked/mostly working but not perfect middle mouse button functionality with ultra-nav installed. Now that I can see the that I shouldn't need this extra trick I expect it to be a part of ultranav, it just makes sense, a lot of professional applications, as well as every single major web browser and almost every application featuring tabs, uses the middle mouse button functionality extensively and by default. Please fix this. Thank you, -your customer.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The win 8 beta I am using has pressure sensitivity win onenote mx and an art program from windows. Try those to verify if you even need wacom drivers. I do not have those drivers in win 7 nor (I think) in the beta win 8.

This is the second time this problem has occurred on my laptop but this time I haven't been able to fix it. Both times I turned my computer off in tablet mode and then happened to turn it back on in regular laptop mode. When I did this however the screen would still be oriented the way it was in tablet mode when turned off i.e. Portrait or secondary landscape. After rotating it to tablet mode and back the screen orientation would correct itself to normal but the trackball and touchpad stop working. When I turn on my computer they both work at the login screen and when I test them with the ThinkVantage Toolbox but not at all other than that. The first time this happened I fixed it by updating the ultranav drivers but this isn't working this time.I've tried turning them back on in the ultranav settings but the boxes to do so are gray and unclickable. I've tried rotating my screen and turning it on and off in tablet and laptop mode several times but nothing has worked so far. Anyone have any other ideas on how to fix it?

Answer:X220 ThinkPad UltraNav Utility for windows 8

Hello,

I am unsure if Lenovo has released an UltraNav Utility for the X220 under Windows 8.

I did find the latest UltraNav driver here for the X220.  It specifically mentions Windows support:

Synaptics UltraNav driver for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit)... - v16.2.19.2 - 18 Dec 2012

The latest UltraNav Utility I could find is for Windows 7, but you could try installing it under Windows 8 in Compatibility Mode to see if it works, I suppose.

UltraNav Utility for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP (32-bit, 64-bit) - Think... - v2.13 - 17 Sep 2010

If it does not work correctly, or introduces erratic behavior, you would then have to uninstall it.  In any case, I would recommend backing up any critical data before installing the UltraNav Utility, just in case.

Answer:Windows 10 support for X220 Tablet

Hello,

It may work fine with Windows 10, however, I don't believe its generation of CPU, IGP and chipset are supported by Intel for Windows 10, which means that Lenovo can't support them, either.  For what it is worth, I installed Windows 10 on a ThinkPad X61t and didn't notice any issues, and that has been out of support for a much longer time than your X220t.

That said, it could be that Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 drivers for the various bits of silicon inside your X220 tablet may work just fine under Windows 10, in which case you would be up and running.

The best suggestion I have is to make a thorough backup of your X220 and then try applying the Windows 10 Upgrade.  If it doesn't work, you will be able to wipe the drive and then reload your backup.

Hey folks, I've upgraded my X220 Tablet to W8 when it has been released. All is running fine. Okay, I deinstalled PC Doctor and several other Lenovo apps which are supported for W7 only but this has not been a lack for me. Since two days, after using the tablet functionality (touch + pen) the touchpad and trackpoint didn't work any more. Had that some time ago, when I suspended the machine in tablet-mode. Afterwards the touchpad and trackpoint were disabled. I could enable both by hitting FN+F8. But this shortcut doesn't work any more. Does anyone know, how to restore the FN+F8 shortcut? I found out the application behind the FN+F8 key can be found in C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\UltraNav Utility\UNAVOSD.exe UPDATE: Driver version is already at 16.2.19.2. cheerskyoshiro

I recently bought a used Thinkpad 220 Tablet. It has a 500 MB hard drive and Windows 7. I would like to perform the free upgrade to Windows 10 as well as replace the hard drive with a SSD. I have a couple of questions: I went to the Windows 10 upgrade site and downloaded the 64 bit version and burnt it to a DVD. However, where do I find my registration key? Do I just use my Windows 7 one? If I go ahead and replace the hard drive (with the SSD), can I just go ahead and install Windows 10 - instead of having to copy everything over to it from the old hard drive (with Windows 7) first? That would be my preferred route. (However, will need the key). What about the IBM diagnostic partittion - what should I do in terms of this? It would be nice to be able to perform backups, or return to the original config. Any tips, thoughts, pointers, or otherwise much appreciated in advance. Thanks,Jon

Answer:X220 Tablet - install SSD then Windows 10 from DVD?

Hello and welcome,

The way I read the documentation:  run the upgrade first from within your running Windows 7.  That should activate Win 10 and the activation status will be recorded on the Microsoft servers.  Once that's done you can do a clean '10 install - either on your existing drive or on the new SSD and activation should be retrieved automatically from the server.

BTW, I've moved your post to the X tablet forum.

Hello,In January, I upgraded the hard drive in my X220 Tablet and installed Windows 8 to the new hard drive.  Since doing so, I've been having trouble with the Wi-Fi on the computer.  It does this thing from time to time (a few times a week) where the Wi-Fi just cuts out, and doesn't think any networks are available, although the networking adapter is enabled.  Usually I can fix things by disabling and enabling the networking adapter a few times, but I'm getting tired of having to do this.  The problem is entirely with the computer, and not with my network, as it will do this on number of different networks, and the problem is not with the networking components.   Has anyone else had similar issues?  Does anyone have any advice on how to fix it?

I'm having trouble getting speedstep to work on my X220t running Win8 Pro x64. Below some settings that may be relevant. I'm hoping someone has been able to get this to work, because at the moment I only get 2h45min battery life with the Core i7-2620M always at 2.7GHz.  - I have BIOS 1.29- In the BIOS SpeedStep is set to be active when on battery- I have installed the latest Intel Chipset drivers (Version 9.3.0.1021)- I have installed the latest power management driver (1.66.0.22)- With the system on battery with low activity the CPU remains at 2.69GHz- In windows power options (Advanced) I have 'system cooling policy' set to 'passive'. Oddly in Windows power setings I don't see any explicit settings for throttling there. I recall that I used to be able to specify a minimum processor state. Maybe that points to the problem?  Has anyone seen the CPU speed change in Win8, and if so, any settings or drivers I need to change?   Image below of the CPU state while on battery and with low activity.

Answer:Speedstep not working on X220 tablet with Windows 8

Well shoot, after spending an hour installing drivers and searching online, the last clue in my post was the one that did it. I looked for 'minimum processor state' and found this page:  http://goo.gl/MHG8I Conclusion:  the Windows 8 System info page and the new task manager do not always display the actual clock speed. For comparison, on my Ativ Atom Z2760 system the Task Manager correctly shows the actual current clock speed (and it's varying a lot), while the System Info page shows the max clock speed of 1.8GHz. For this X220t on the other hand the Task manager display is stuck showing the max CPU speed only. Maybe a firmware update will fix this, not sure.  To see the actual speed on the X220t install CPU-Z, see screenshot below. In the screenshot the speed shows as less than 800MHz at the moment, and I see it ramp up when I do something CPU intensive.  Hope this helps someone else. It doesn't explain why the battery life is so bad though. Maybe the battery is just dying..

I am experiencing very poor Virtual PC performance on my new X200 tablet. I have tried existing VHDs as well as brand news Windows 7 VM's created on the machine. VHD's that launch in 30 seconds on my two year old Toshiba tablet take over a minute to launch on my new X220 tablet. That Toshiba Portege M780 rates multiple points lower on the Windows Experience Index than the X220t. Lenovo loads more drivers and services on their out-of-box machine than I have every seen, so I can't help wondering if there is some driver or application impacting VM performance. I did uninstall and reinstall the latest version of RapidBoot (saw that post), but that didn't help the VM performance. Anyone else out there run VMs on their X220t? Thanks, C.C.

Answer:Virtual PC Performance on Windows 7 64-bit X220 Tablet

The Virtual PC (Windows Virtual PC) version for Windows 7 is much worse than older Virtual PC 2007. Have you enabled HW virtualization in BIOS ? It is required for Windows 7 host system. I've used Virtual PC 2007 on Windows XP host many years but since it is not supported by Windows 7 host anymore, I've moved to VirtualBox and haven't found any problem yet.

EDIT: In perhaps the most embarrassing moment to have asked for help in my entire life, I restarted my computer and everything works fine now.  I must not have restarted after one of the drivers was installed for some reason.  This topic can be locked. ---- Original Post: Hello, I am a digital artist so I rely on the hardiness of my X220's pen/stylus/digitizer for a lot of my laptop use.  This fall my laptop had a virus that required it to be reset to factory settings, and so I decided it would be a good time to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 7) before installing any programs.  I now have Windows 8.1 and it is working fine; however, my pen is not being detected by my system.  My fingers are being detected on the touchscreen, so I know the touch screen works.  I did not try my pen since resetting to factory settings, so I do not know whether it worked before I upgraded to Windows 8.1.  I would assume the issue is a missing driver, but I could not find the right driver on Lenovo's website and the digitizer update utility produces an error when I click "Update."  I was wondering if anybody had an idea for what I could do.  I would assume I am not the first person to try updating to Windows 8.1 on an X220, nor the first to reset an X220 to factory settings.  However, a brief search of Lenovo's support forums and of the internet has shown no solutions to my particular problem. Here are drivers I am us... Hi, diglett

There is another driver you could try using and see if it helps. Here you will find the latest version of the Synaptics driver. Synaptics is the company that also makes the UltraNav driver. The driver is the base Synaptics driver, but it should have most, if not all, of the functionality of the UltraNav driver. You can find the driver here.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

I just received a new x220 tablet, and the fingerprint reader is not working. As far as I can tell, it has never worked. It does not show up in the bios, and it does not show up in the Windows device manager. It is as if the hardware is not there. Is this a hardware defect? Has anyone else experienced this type of issue?

Answer:x220 tablet fingerprint reader not detected in bios or Windows

It is hard to diagnose from across the country, but there are 3 parts involved - the fingerprint device itself, the cable and the USB hub circuitry on the motherboard. (fingerprint connects as a USB device) You might try to upgrade the BIOS to the latest.   If you have a warranty, use it. If you bought with no warranty, all you can do is check for an unplugged cable and start swapping parts, but don't open it up if there is a warranty. You could turn an expensive repair into being your problem.

Hi, Recently I had to reformat my T61p and reinstall everything from scratch. Before the format, UltraNav worked without any problems even when I was using my wireless BT mouse (Microsoft Wireless Notebook Presenter Mouse 8000) together with UltraNav + latest version of the Microsoft IntelliPoint software. I could switch from the wireless mouse to UltraNav seemlessly. After formatting, I've installed all the latest drivers for Windows 7 64-bit from the Lenovo web site, and after that, UltraNav started to work erraticaly. Basically, what happens is that although the mouse pointer moves around when I use either the TouchPad or TrackPoint, the click action doesn't always work (I have to press several times for it to actually click) and most of the times, instead of just clicking, it actually sticks to the selected item and if I move it, it performs a dragging actions, as if I was pressing and dragging the mouse pointer. Sometimes, if I go to the ultranav properties and reselect the click and right click actions in the UltraNav settings, it starts working properly, but after some use, it goes back to the erratic behaviour. The only way I can use the mouse properly is by using my external mouse. I've tried rolling back to the previous version of the ultranav drivers (18), but still have the same behaviour. It works fine for some time, and after some use, it goes back to misbehaving. Has anyone seen this before and is there any fix at al... Read more

I have installed Windows 8.1 Professional on on a Lenovo X220 Tablet and everything seems to have installed correctly, although my system, which supported limited touch with 2 touch points in Windows 7, only has Pen Support in 8.1. I have been able to get the system to be recognized as "Pen and Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points" but only if I disable/unintall the Intel HD 3000 driver, and use Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead.  The problem is that the resolution isn't as crisp.   Any recommendations as to what I can do to get the limted touch to be recognized with the Intel HD 3000 driver?  This one is baffling.   Any help would be appreciated.  The X220 Tablet's type is 4296-2WU Also, the Intel HD Graphics 3000 driver is the latest version compatible with 8.1 64bit - 9.17.10.3517. Update: I have also tried the previous Intel driver release, 9.17.10.3347, as well as the recommend Intel driver from the support page 9.17.10.2843 and non of them allow my screen to do Limited Touch Support with 2 Touch Points.  Yet, if I disable the Intel driver, and restart, I can.

Troy,

Thanks for sharing your expeirences and the details of the driver version.

Officially, I don't think Lenovo provided full support for Win 8 on the X220, but as you note it (and the upgrade to 8.1) can work with some limitations.   I'll check with one of our software engineers to see if he may have some suggestions on this one.

I expect you will probably draw some responses from the community as the X220 was a very popular system with a good following.

Best regards,

Here is my question, it contians an image of the cursor in question, I guess I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Lenovo software that's installed on it.  Not too long ago we removed Quickboot, so I wonder if this has anything to do wtih it.

15.3.16.1 released on August 23, appears to have a bug, on the x220 at least. Right dragging has become almost impossible.  Use one finger to hold down the right touchpad "button", use the other finger to drag an icon on the desktop, while the other finger is still holding down the right touchpad button.  80% of the time, the driver will release your held down button, half way through the drag. very annoying.  I've played with every setting in the ultranav settings, and I have uninstalled, and re-installed the driver.

I purchased this unit June 2012, following update recommendations through Lenovo Solution Center since that date.  BIOS 1.33.  Recently installed Crucial 256gb mSATA SSD.  TrackPoint and TrackPad worked fine until yesterday.  I also use a Lenovo Bluetooth mouse, purchased three months ago, and all three forms of GUI cursor navigation worked fine until yesterday.  I used a wired USB mouse to navigate while (1) uninstalling and reinstalling the Bluetooth mouse drivers. (2) I found a thread on this site that spoke of disabling and re-enabling the TrackPoint and the TrackPad in the BIOS.  When both are enabled, neither works.  When the TrackPad is disabled, the TrackPoint works.  When the TrackPoint is enabled and the TrackPad remains enabled, nothing works.  I have uninstalled the UltraNav drivers and installed the current Synaptics driver (from their site), 16.2.21.0 dated 10/26/2012.  I then alternatively disabled and enabled TrackPoint and TrackPad in BIOS as above, and the result is the same. I've deleted the driver subdirectory that contains the UltraNav driver.  I did that before installing the Synaptics driver.  When I use Lenovo Solutions to search for updates, it asks me to download Synaptics UltraNav driver 16.2.5.0, which I then download and installed.  fn-f8, however, says that both TrackPoint and TrackPad must be enabled in the BIOS for UltraNav to work.  When I do that and press fn-f8, I am ... When researching an UltraNav problem (TouchPad not staying disabled), I found a driver update (15.3.8, MIGR-66898) that was not installed by System Update (an all too common problem that Lenovo needs to fix!), so I installed it manually, which seems to have corrected my issue.

Good day,
Thanks for reading.

I recently installed Win 8 (not upgrade) on my tablet. One of the downsides has been that I now cannot get my built-in 3G to work as the FnF5 button does not bring up the expected dialogue.

Answer:X220 tablet - post Windows 8 - FnF5 not working so 3G not working

Hey George,

Are you receiving dialogue at all? If so, what is coming up? Additionally, are other FN keys working as intended?

With your recent upgrade to Windows 8 have you upgraded everything that you could prior to the upgrade, and upgraded what Windows 8 drivers are available? I have seen success with updating the power manager driver, as well as the Hotkey Features Integration Driver. The Hotkey driver has up to Windows 7 Driver, it may possibly help your issue, but make sure you back up, and have the capability to rollback to the previous driver. Good luck and please keep me posted on your progress.

Thank You.

I have a desktop that runs Windows 8.1. My x220 tablet runs Windows 7. I was thinking about getting a wacom bamboo tablet for my art in photoshop (which I make on my desktop... x220 isn't powerful enough for what I do in photoshop). Then I realized that my x220 tablet is kind of the same thing. Is there anyway I can connect my tablet to my desktop so that when I'm using photoshop, I can use the stylus on the tablet to control what I do? Many thanks in advance.

When I use the X220 as a laptop I can duplicate the display through my SmartBoard projector but when I use it as a tablet and it is docked I have to turn the tablet and dock 180 degrees so I am not writing upside down on the smartboard;  that means the dock has the cables coming out the front.  I can undock and plug everything into the X220 but the beauty of the dock is that I don't have to!

Hello, I use a ThinkPad X220 and until the last week I barely had any problem with it.  The UltraNav driver settings did occasionally reset themselves in the past, but that was only when I updated the driver or used Windows Update.  Since last week, however, I found the settings reset every time I shut down my computer. I checked the solutions on other threads (which normally pertained to other systems), but to no avail.  I even tried installing the Synaptics driver instead of the UltraNav driver, but I encountered the same problem: the settings kept resetting for the other driver the same way it did the Ultranav. I updated all the drivers for the machine as of this morning, and still there is no difference. Could anyone help me out here?  I am unable to use the TrackPoint unless it is set at its lightest touch, and it is quite inconvenient to have the settings reset every time I boot up the computer.

Hi All, I think I have encountered with a few flaws that could be related with BIOS 1.28 and/or UltraNav 15.3.39.1 The symptoms are mainly related to sleep mode, as follows: 1) Sometimes after I press Fn+F4 the screen will go off and seems the machine is preparing to sleep, but it never enters sleep.2) Sometimes after sleep, the TrackPoint and TouchPad will not work. Pressing Fn+F8 will show message "UltraNav driver not installed".3) Sometimes, only after a sleep and wakeup, the wireless (Intel 6205 with driver 14.3.0.6) will lose response and halt for a while. After a while the wireless will be working again, may require a disable/enable cycle or may not. All these happened after I upgrade to 1.28 BIOS. With 1.26 everything works perfectly. And the symptom 1 happens only after I installed the new UltraNav driver. So I think they may related to BIOS or the UltraNav driver. BTW, there is a disturbing problem with the UltraNav driver, long not resolved. If I am using the middle button to scroll the content of a window, and the window freeze during scrolling, the mouse will get stuck. Only after the window unfreeze itself of force kill the window will bring back mouse. This is a rare case but truly disturbing since I will not be able to handle the freezed window with mouse. Anybody had the same experience?

Answer:X220 Problems possibly related with BIOS 1.28 and/or UltraNav driver 15.3.39.1

Can you please try going back to BIOS 1.26, but keep the latest Ultranav driver, and let me know if you still have the same problems?

Hi all,    I have a really annoying problem...my x220 tablet disconnects from the internet whenever I enter tablet mode. The internet can be working perfectly fine while in non tablet mode but as soon as I switch to tablet mode, my internet disconnects. And if I switch back to non tablet mode from tablet mode, my internet returns almost instantaneously. I can load a page in non tablet mode with no problems, switch to tablet mode and the page stops loading. If I return back to non tablet mode the page resumes loading without so much as a pause or a hiccup. Also, when I switch the computer to tablet mode, wifi networks disappear off of the "available networks" list that were there before the switch.     I've tried everything, from updating network device drivers, reinstalling network device drivers, running diagnostics, reformatting my computer, uninstalling Norton Antivirus, system restoring to days before the last known working date in normal mode and safe mode, and contacting customer support (chat and call, managed to get a hold of a rep) but none of them have worked.    I also used to have a networking log before I reformatted/system reset to factory settings and there were a ton of errors with words like avsc manager failed to "something" ... I'll reinstall the thinkpad network managing program to create another log. Can someone please help me? My last resort is calling lenovo support again to have tech support come to hel... Read more

I have a new X220 Tablet, and the Pen and Tablet functions work perfectly out of the box as long as the unit is on the Ultrabase. As soon as I remove from the Ultrabase (or boot while not connected), the Pen & Tablet functions stop working. Conversely, if I dock the X220, the Pen & Tablet functions begin working again. The behavior is the same regardless of whether I have an external monitor attached or not. Any thoughts?

Hi, I have here a X220 Tablet that seem to have a FAN problem.Often in the last days my CPU temperature is often over 90 CAnd the fan has problem to reduce the temperature.I have also situation that the CPU is going too hot and the tablet switch off! With the CPU tool TPFC.62 I can see that the fan speed is 2300-2500 RPMs.But this seams not enough to be. And now the strange thing:When I disable the graphic adapter ?Intel(R) HD Graphics Family? (Driver 8.15.10.2321) and reboot and do the same thing that I done to get the temperature over 90 C with the intel graphic adapter the temperature is not going over 83 C!!! The fan speed is 3500-3800 RPMs. Can someone helps me with this issue?

Answer:X220 Tablet FAN Problem - temperature over 90 °C - tablet switch off :(

Hi giciorek,

I understand that your fan/temperature problems can be frustrating.  I would try updating your BIOS and also updating Power Manager.  (Some on the forum have tried downloading ThinkPad Fan Control, but that is not an official Lenovo solution.)

Download Power Manager here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014924

Download BIOS Update here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018805

In Power Manager, click Advanced at top right, you can Set Optimize Fan Control to Balance All Parameters under Battery Settings.  Set it to Reduce Noise Dynamically under AC.

Let me know if this helps.

I have a Thinkpad X230 Tablet.  The trackpoint and touchpad have stopped working.  This just happened today, after about six months of use.  When I boot the machine, I can move the mouse cursor for a few seconds, but then it stops.  I don't see any error messages.  The Ultranav panel in the mouse control panel applet shows the controls for both trackpoint and touchpad greyed out--they can't be clicked on, and the "enabled" boxes are not checked.  The device manager says that the device is working.  If I try to update the driver, I'm told it is up to date.  If I uninstall the driver and reboot, the trackball and touchpad work, but they seem to be using generic drivers--the ultranav panel does not show in the mouse applet.  I'm told to reboot to complete installation.  However, if I do that, I'm back to square one, with the ultranav not working.  I checked the boot configuration, and it shows both the trackpoint and touchpad as enabled.

The learning curve on this machine is steep if you want to take advantage of all the input options but I've put the time in and I'm starting to love it. There is one thing I wish Lenovo would address though. I see plenty of ThinkPad users with this problem going back to at least 2008, and no solutions forthcoming. The manual states: "On the display bezel near the screen is a row of buttons with which you can control your computer in the tablet mode, without the use of the keyboard."By default the buttons are set to turn your computer off, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, or rotate the screen 90 degrees. The manual goes on to describe how you can customize these buttons via the Tablet Shorcut Menu, which is accessed via Start > Programs > Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools > Tablet Utility. If you open this program you get a dialog box titled "Auto Screen Rotation Settings." This dialog controls what orientation the screen should switch to when you convert into tablet. So it really doesn't have anything to do with the buttons. The only dialog that allows any assignment of the tablet buttons is Windows Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings. Here the Buttons tab is supposed to list the actual buttons on the front panel and let you assign them, but the only one shown is the Screen Rotation button. This works fine, you can set the button's function for a single press and a long press. (Too bad it's not possible to use Shift by itself, but that is as-designed by MS.)It should go without sayi... Hey all, I'm on an i7 x220 running W8 (and Ubuntu on VirtualBox, phew) - but I've gotten myself into a problem.  I disabled a bunch of mouse drivers trying to play a Steam game this weekend, and somehow turned off the left and right click buttons that are directly above the trackpad. The middle button still functions as a scrollwheel when held, but the apparent amputation of the L/R click is really bugging me. Anyone know if there are specific registry edits I can make, or a driver specifically for these two buttons? Thank you!

Answer:X220 upper left and right clicks nonfunctional - but good news, trackpad and UltraNav working fine

Hi, warrenmcwin

I would recommend uninstalling the UltraNav driver from Device Manager and then reinstalling the driver in its entirety. This will ensure that all components are properly recognized and installed. To uninstall the current driver, navigate to Device Manager by pressing Win + X and choosing it from the menu. When here, open the tree for Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click on the device present and select Uninstall. Once uninstalled, you should be prompted to restart your machine. Once restarted, a generic driver from Windows should be installed. This will allow you to navigate and download the UltraNav driver here.

Regards,
Adam

When you are docked on the Ultrabase Series 3, the dock's displayport and vga can both be active. Yes you can use the displayport to dvi converter to connect to your second monitor.

Selecting this option may delay your shipment more than 4 weeks. Why even release a model when both screen options are delayed more than four weeks? It's a phantom launch. No real product is available. I first checked this an hour or two after "launch" so it's always been like this. This is rediculous and is just a cash grab with the idea "see! it's available, please don't give your money to another company". Don't release products you can't ship. Don't release products before every major option is available, i.e., Gorilla Glass, i5, i7 processors...

Answer:The x220 Tablet is not available

It's interesting that apparently the Canadian site actually tells you in advance that there will be a 4+ week delay. On the US site, none of the options have notices saying they may cause delays. The order says "ships in 8-12 business days" all the way up until you check out, at which point it changes to "estimated ship date" in 5+ weeks (5/27/11).

Question: x220 tablet DOA.

So. I ended up, after about a month and a half of lurking on forums and reading reviews, purchasing an X220t with most of the bells and whistles, along with an extended next day onsite warrranty, extra pen, etc. I track it all the way from China on the UPS site every three hours. It has been an unhealthy obsession. And it arrived in the mail. Dead. Won't work. Won't boot. DOA (mostly. several indicator lights flash a bit, but I don't hear a HD, fans spinning, or screen turning on.)  I've talked with tech support (who did what they could [Nice people!]) but they were unable to get any immediate help or provide any advice beyond 'we'll call you'.Also, they couldn't find verification that I had a warranty for awhile. My concern is that this is for college, and I'll be going to school on the other end of the country (Colorado School of Mines!). And I'll be leaving shortly, and work has left me short on time, etc. So, how common is this? Should I try to get my money back and just buy a Fujitsu tablet, or something else from a retailer? There is always bragging about thinkpads being so tough, and mine is dead after a ride through UPS via Worldport. ( I know... could be any number of components that were dead to begin with, etc.) Are they just crap? I'm trying to keep it cool, but I just spent a whole lot of money, including on a warranty which is generally just gravy for most companies, and I've recieved a very pretty lump of plastic (again, I'm not an ent... Answer:x220 tablet DOA.

Sideburns, welcome to the forum,

I'm sorry to read about your experience, something like this must be a huge disappointment after having waited eagerly for the arrival of your new ThinkPad.

So far you seem to have handled the situation correctly and would ask you to take a look at this post in our FAQs; Mark's Advice About DOA systems.

I personally feel that in your situation, due to the time limitations you mention, the quickest route for you to persue would be with support and having the system repaired. Yes you have stong arguments to ask for a refund or an exchange system, but these could potentially take longer to realise than having the system repaired.

As to your question to how common this is; in my experience it's not at all common. I personally have been selling Think products for over 11 years and can count on one hand the number of systems I have seen which were literally DOA.

Regards

I want to reformat my X220 tablet. Is there anything I should be cautious of? Which drivers to install? Are all the necessary drivers for tablet use on Lenovo's website? Will I lose anything else except data? Is Thinkvantage necessary? A recommended general procedure? Thank you.

I have a x220 tablet with SSD.Need a little more space, so was thinking of adding a mSATA SSD. Will want to continue to use my "regular" SSD as my boot and just use mSATA for storage (run VMs off it so need speed). I don't think there are any issues but figure was worth asking.  Moved to correct forum.

Answer:X220 Tablet - SSD and mSata SSD

no real issues. But the mSATA is only SATAII, whilst the main hdd bay operates at SATAIII.

Hello!  I have an X220 tablet with a stylus that, whenever near the screen, begins writing or selecting. Depending on the program I have open of course. The touch features work fine, and to the best of my knowledge all my drivers are up to date. At this point I think I need to simply replace the pen, but before I spend the money on that, i would like to see if any of you know how to fix this without a new pen.  Thank you for your time,BriceJ

Answer:PLEASE HELP - Should I buy Tablet or Standard X220?

tablet allows you to directly write on the screen or use your finger as an input device (if you select the multitouch option), so if you have need for such feature, then the tablet obviously will the best choice. If you don't use the handwriting or touch screen option, then the normal x220 laptop is better, as it is slightly lighter than the tablet model and also slightly more rugged due to the different hinge design.

Hi everyone I have had a Lenovo X220 tablet for a while now. I bought it on eBay. I can't send it to lenovo to fix, of course. My config (currrent):Win 8.1 pro (legal)Sandisk 128gb SSDLenovo 2x4 gb ram My problem is the following: as some in this forum experienced too, it just reboots randomly for no reason. It goes "clic", black screen and back to bios then OS.The behavior is the exact same as if you kept the power button pressed until it reboots. What I've been testing so far:- Switching OS (I've tested win7, win8, ubuntu, debian, elementaryos, archlinux)- Switching HDD (one SSD, one HDD)- Switching ram (removed one, removed the other, switched positions)- Flashing the bios, upgrading, downgrading it)- Watching the CPU, fan, temp: all normal. For some reason the best experience was with Windows 8.What could it be? I used lenovo diagnostics tools downloaded from their official site, but the only one that works is memorytest (which proved to be ok) I don't want another computer, I love that one and I don't want to change. Some people mention driver issues (graphics card, power management, stylus)... Could you please, please, help me? I don't know what to do anymore. And I don't have the money to get another computer right now. I am a teacher and I draw comics as a hobby and I need my lenovo to ink and color my work.  I'm fairly aware as to informatics, I know how to create live usbs, I know how to uninstall / reinstall drivers, I know how to use m... I'm configuring an order for a maxed x220 tablet. I really want a large (512gb or higher SSD). Since that's not a factory option I guess I'll have to go aftermarket, open the case and do a home upgrade. I've done plenty of drive upgrades before but not an SSD.My review of message board makes it seem like there can be fit problems with some SSDs in the x220, and that with SSDs in general you should do a clean install and not a full clone (with OS).  That always raises issues with drivers and QA'ing the install to make sure you got it all back to factory fresh. I've read the posts about using a smaller SSD in the extra slot as a boot drive and keeping files on HDD, but I would really like to have everything on the faster media. So my question is, are there any x220 tablet owners out there that have self-installed large SSDs. Any tips, warnings or reassurances? Thx

Answer:x220 tablet and large SSD

HI,  I installed Intel 320 SSD (160 Gb) and used Acronis to clone the previous drive. It worked well. What may be of greater interest to you, is that I had to remove a black spacer attached to the SSD to make it 7mm from 9.5mm.  It can be easily done with Intel SSDs (except 510, I think), but you will have to order shorter screws online. Just search Google or this forum for screws for Intel SSD. Good luck!

The truth is I don't know whether I should get a X220 tablet or standard X220.  I just think the tablet thing could be fun when reading, sorting and editing photos, etc., and I'd still have a X220 if it turns out to be useless.  Is this a correct assumtion? =)I've seen X220 tables come with an UltraBase and a DVD-RW drive.  I'd like a setup where I have some sort of docking station at my desktop were I can attach to a larger (DisplayPort) monitor, a keyboard, scanner, etc, and quickly snap my pc out for mobile work, preferably with the option of having a DVD-drive attached.  Would a X220 tablet with the UltraBase fit in the Dock or should the UltraBase be removed first?  Can the UltraBase be seen as a portable clip-on DVD-drive or should it be regarded as an alternative to a Dock?  Or put in a use-case:  I have my X200 tablet with the UltraBase and drive.  Can I quickly click this in the Dock and continue (say) watching DVD on my monitor?  Or do I have to move all cables from the Dock to the UltraBase?  Same for standard X220?What's the max output when connected to a UltraBase and/or Dock?  Or put in a different way: Can the X220 tablet fully use a 1920x1200 monitor?  What's the max resolution?  Same for standard X220?Where can I find jucy specs like these?  The standard white paper only shows very brief defails and only for the laptop's own screen.I seems like there are two versions of the X220 tablet disp... Answer:Questions regarding X220 tablet before I buy one

1. That is "correct" but it would also be "expensive." The tablet is several hundred dollars more expensive for a feature you may never use.2. The UltraBase IS a dock. And for the tablet, it is the ONLY dock. It is technically portable but I wouldn't recommend carrying it around. As far as I know, the X220 without tablet has other options, but you wouldn't be able to use an UltraBase and a dock at the same time.3. The tablet can handle 1920x1200 and higher, but I haven't personally tested beyond 1920x1080 (my monitor is an HDTV which only goes up to 1080p). 5. The Gorilla glass is only on the outdoor model. It does not support two finger touch. Both displays have stylus input. 7. Ignoring the weight difference, the experience should be identical, although I haven't tested this myself. I would recommend against getting a tablet. I and many others are having great issue with the accuracy of the stylus input.

I just purchased X220 Tablet. While purchasing I was made to understand that the system comes with Mobile Broadband Ready. However I am unable to use  my SIM card. I have inserted the SIM in the slot underneath the Battery, as was mentioned in the manual. But it does not work, no internet connection and in Access Connection the Mobile Broadband button is greyed. Can some one explain reason? I am able to use the sim with the pocketwifi, the tablet is able to detect through wifi but I wanted my 3G to be inthe laptop so taht I don;t have to use pocketwifi or USB dongle.

Hi guys, New x220 tablet. Has been working fine, left it for the weekend and coming back to it this morning it will not bootup. Is built with Windows 7 and I had the full functionality of the biometrics running and sync'd with drivelock/bios password. On trying to boot this morning using the power button, I press it once, the button lights green (around edge), for a second, then disappears, the biometric light goes green for a second then disappears.  Nothing else happens from there. Have tried the usual - battery replaced, booting on just power etc but same happens.  I cannot hear or feel the hdd spinning (i have an identical model also which is working fine). Have searched through the forums and inet but cannot find any issues relating to the light sequence etc (wondering if it had a specific sequence to tell me what the errors are).... Suspect HDD has gone as it is just not spinning, but cannot be sure as I cannot get to BIOS or anything else..... Any ideas?

Answer:x220 Tablet will not bootup

Edited to add: I swapped hdd out and put it in identical tablet - HDD seems to work fine. Popped it back into the offending tablet, tried to switch power on and the green light around power button alternates with biometric light (on and off) for around 30 seconds and ends up with biometric light green and power light off.... Also swapped out memory - still nothing - no access to BIOS etc - no warning beeps...

I tried using the registry hack in Windows 8 to stop my battery charging higher than 95%, and was sucesful. however this has also had the effect of meaning that when I plug the charger in when the laptop is on, it says "plugged in, not charging". If I turn the laptop off, or put it into Standby, then plug the charger in, it starts charging fine and continues to do so after turning it back on. I have tried re-installing Windows 8.1 (and not installed any of the power management drivers) incase it was a driver problem, however this has not fixed it. If there is some way to completly reset the battery controller (i'm not sure if the chip that does this is in the battery of laptop) then I would be very glad to know.

They don't support using the middle trackpoint button as middle mouse any more. Why? I addressed the pathetic Windows 7 drivers that didn't let you have both middle mouse and scrolling by using an autohotkey script that scrolls when the middle mouse is pressed. But now I can't use the workaround because Lenovo have inexplicably removed functionality that exists in the plain OEM drivers from Synaptics! What the hell? Is this a permanent change? This has severely distrupted my workflow in Windows 8 (after upgrading). I mean I can understand the delay in getting Lenovo tools on the Windows Store. Or at least, I can tolerate it for now. But this is just stupid. Put the middle mouse configuration options back in the drivers. Jesus. Does anyone have a workaround for this? That doesn't involve OEM Synaptics drivers? I find those have different default sensitivity and I can't get them to feel the same as everything was on Windows 7.

Answer:Windows 8 UltraNav drivers

I know that this isn't the answer you wanted but I downloaded the latest (just released) synaptics OE drivers and they work great.

Hi! A few months have passed now and I've become used to Windows 8. And now I am missing a touch screen ... However, I am really wondering why the integrated touch pad works so poorly (in general, and especially with Win 8). MacBooks should be the benchmark there - is it really that hard? I know that I can configure loads of options for the touch pad (UltraNav), but it still won't be smooth and will neither replace the finger swipes on a touch screen. Am I missing something? What are the best practices to use the touch pad with Windows 8? Or is there a touch screen available indeed? Regards.Ben

I have an IBM ThinkPad X41 that was issued to me from work. I would like to reinstall the operating system to get rid of all the garbage that's on it. Hi, Does anyone have a suggestion for a good sleeve for the X220 Tablet with a 6-cell battery? There is a thread http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/What-case-sleeve-do-you-use-for-your-X220/m-p/... for the X220, but if I've understood things correctly the tablet X220 is not quite the same size as the non-tablet version. Personally I'm looking for a simple, cheap and discreet sleeve that fits the machine quite snugly. Thanks.

In the end I bought one from a store and so could try them out. The Targus SKIN laptop case, 34cm/13.4", fits my X220 tablet with 6 cell battery perfectly, and seems well-made. It was 14 in store, so relatively cheap.

Hi, Maryd1621

What exactly happens when you attempt to use the integrated camera? Which programs have you tried using the camera with? As for the driver, click here for the camera driver for Windows 7, Vista, and XP. If you are using Windows 8, there is not an updated driver on the website, but the default driver built in to the machine should work fine.

Hi, I just received my X220 Tablet, it has the UltraNav touchpad AND the touchscreen.  The mouse was not working correctly, lots of pauses when highlighting or copy/pasting.  Also, screens wouldn't finish loading on some websites without moving mouse.  Called TechSupport, she signed onto my computer and downloaded new (updated) driver.  Worked perfectly!  Until... I turned on the machine the next day (actually I woke it up but it happened with start as well).  Completely frozen mouse, like the entire thing didn't exist.  Weird: only on my own profile, not my husband's and not the Admin that I later created.  Managed to get into Control Panel > Mouse and found the UltraNav tab with all info grayed out, like there was no driver at all!  Went to drivers, found 2: the original and the new.  Should one have been removed?  Is it OK to have 2?  Reinstalled the newer driver and everything OK til I shut it down again, then back to square 1.  It's like the computer has decided there is no driver at all when I shut it off, even when I only sleep. Called back TS a few times, finally someone told me to delete my whole profile and create it again (after moving it to a hard drive so it would save all my docs and settings...which it did not save EVERYTHING, not my bookmarks, not all my programs, not all my files...fortunately, I also backed up everything to same hard drive the more traditional w... Hi guys, this is my first post here.I'm really considering buying one of these for note taking and after reading many glowing reviews I'm close to set on it. However, while doing my research on the tablet I stumbled upon issues regarding palm rejection and problems with the digitizer's precision on the edges of the screen. This is my first time venturing into the tablet world, so I'm not sure if the complaints that I'm reading about truly wreck the user experience, or if the complaints are being exaggerated (for lack of a better word) by tablet connoisseurs who expect nothing less than perfect from Lenovo. Specifically, my questions are:1) As a student who will be using it mostly with OneNote, how glaring are these problems? Is palm rejection as terrible as people say it is or can it be simply solved by putting the digitizer on the screen before setting your palm down?2) And as for menu buttons on the edge of the screen, is it really that tough to get to them? Does using your finger to press the menu buttons on the edge of the screen serve as a good workaround for this problem?3) I read somewhere that the "edge issue" is more of a problem during landscape orientation as opposed to portrait. Is this true?4) Have the previous Lenovo tablets suffered from similar issues and were they addressed with driver updates? That is, should I expect these issues to eventually be fixed?5) How do the X201 tablet and X200 tablet compare to the X220 tablet when it comes to these issues? Were t... Read more

Answer:Seriously considering an X220 Tablet for medical school

Hi crushkilla and welcome to the forum,

I think I can answer some of your questions but first I just want to point out that people posting on help forums are not posting the virtues of the machines, they're posting their problems. People rarely post how happy they are with their machines. So, if you consider the ratio of complaints with the number of machines sold, well, you see what I'm getting at, right?

The "edge"  issue has been around as long as tablets have been around in one form or another.  I have 4 x41ts and they're off "a little" at the edges. I have an hp tablet and it's off "a little" at the edges.  At the edges if you hold the pen perpendicular to the screen it works better. They're not off that much.

I've tried different pens and they all work pretty much the same.  The thing with Lenovo is that issues do get fixed. They don't sweep them under the rug.

The more I use a tablet, the more I like it.  I never had an issue pressing on the menu buttons with the pen.

All in all I like my tablets, I wish I could afford a new one, I would get an x220t.

I'm sure other posters will jump in here and give their opinions.

Does anyone know when the i5 / i7 processors, Camera and Wimax options will become availablte? Lenovo US site only has the i3 option available (or is the i3 configuration the only one that will be  available for the x220 in the US??) Also is the Integrated Mobile Broadband (Sierra Wireless MC8355 - Gobi 3000 option open to worldwide usage or is it locked to a US network.

Hopefully, one the FRU removal/installation diagrams will show you where the cable routes and attaches.

We are having an issue with 170 - X220 tablets we purchased where they will power off when in sleep mode. The student will close the lid, go to their next class, open the lid and it will restart to the screen saying windows was shut down improperly. It only happens to machines that we installed the battery slice on and we have updated to the latest bios and it did not seem to resolve the issue at all. We are using a a standard windows 7 32 bit image without the lenovo power manager. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Answer:X220 Tablet Sleep issues

I would check the event log in Windows to see what does it have to say about the sleep and unexpected shutdown events.

Hi, I just realized that their won't be any usb 3.0 port on the x220 tablet. Does anzone knows the reason? Will it be possible to customize it and inset this port? Thanks-ludide

Answer:X220 tablet --- no usb 3.0 port serial

I hope you're wrong. That would simply be the straw that beaks the camel's back. As if 16:9 screen wasn't bad enough. From what I've understood previously, USB 3.0 was supposed to be an option. But now I checked the recent tabook and indeed I can't find any mention of USB 3.0 in X220T. That's just retarded.

Is the ExpressCard slot on the X220 Tablet 2.0 or not? I have looked at the new Lenovo Tabook PDF and all it specified was that it was compatable with both the 34mm and 54mm slot standards. I wish to buy a USB 3.0 ExpressCard but only if I know the slot on the X220 Tablet can provide the full throughput of an ExpressCard 2.0 slot.

Every time I find the key to success, someone changes the lock.

We are having some issues with the pen touch when getting closer to the edge of the screen. The little dot-guide loses accuracy around the edges, making it frustrating to adjust clicks. Another issue is the pen gets shaky when you are closer to the edge of the screen as well. Example - it is impossibleto draw a straight line when you get closer to the screen (OneNote). We had a Toshiba Portege previously and we never had these issues. I apoligize if this is redudndant but i would like a solution. Driver update? Thanks,

Answer:X220 Tablet - Pen and Screen Issues

This is common with all Wacom tablet screens, but it shouldn't be as noticeable as you describe... It's certainly not as annoying on my X61T. Perhaps it's a defect?

Hi, I've just received my X220 from B&H, and I read about the pen holder on the side of the laptop holding the pen with a click and releasing it by pressing in the pen. problem is, when i put the pen inside the pen holder there's nothing holding it in, there's a spring inside that pushes it out. any thoughts, am i doing something wrong?

Answer:X220 tablet pen holder not working?

You're doing it right, just make sure you're pushing it in all the way.

Hi everyone I like the x220, but there are 2 things that are bothering me1 - the pen-at-the-edge issue2- the awkwardness of the battery I have another week to decide if I'm going to send this back.  I'd be content to hold onto the unit, but I just want to know if anybody has any experience with the Fujitsu lifebook tablets (eg. t901, t731, etc).  Are these issues any different on these computers?    I'm guessing the stylus thing is universal, but maybe it's just something lenovo hasn't sorted out yet.  thanks

Answer:x220 compared to fujitsu tablet

Hi,

I don't have any experience with Fujitsu tablets, but I do with Lenovo's and hp's.  I've seen this problem in different degrees on all of them so it seems to be the same across the board.  We've tried different drivers and sometimes something works and sometimes it doesn't.  I know on mine it works the best right after a clean install of the os.  Then when I do all the windows updates, it steadily gets worse. All my tablets are older ones though.

The x220 stylus issue is in engineering right now and we should hear something back in a couple of days.

I've seen people putting 3 cell batteries in the x220 to give it a nice clean look and feel, but that will decrease the battery life.

If you like your x220, I'd give it a couple of days and see what engineering comes up with.  Lenovo does do a pretty good job of fixing problems.

My doughter's laptop falled down from the table what caused that the LCD is not working correctly. It lights a little bit, but stays almost dark. I checked the LCD, and it looks that the one is OK (I put it into another X220 t and it works. So it looks that there's something different broken (also I mounted the correctly working LCD from another X220 t into the one and doesnt work either). What could it be? Where should I find the reason of that? Could it be something with the motherboard or what? As mentioned before, the LCD lights a little bit, but doesn't show anything, stays dark (a little lighter than as is OFF).

Answer:Lenovo X220 tablet LCD backlight.

I'm guessing you blew a fuse on the motherboard.  They are VERY fast burning fuses and easy to blow.  Unfortunately, most places cannot fix that sort of problem without replacing the board.

I have x220 table. Is this laptop available to use triple monitor with only with DisplayPort Monitor Cables?Or I need to buy extra muti display adapter?Thank you in advance.

Answer:triple display with x220 tablet

The graphics chipset in the x220 only supports two active displays, including the one in the laptop itself.  You would need a USB video adapter or similar external solution to run three displays.
