X220 Tablet - SSD and mSata SSD

Question: X220 Tablet - SSD and mSata SSD

I have a x220 tablet with SSD.Need a little more space, so was thinking of adding a mSATA SSD. Will want to continue to use my "regular" SSD as my boot and just use mSATA for storage (run VMs off it so need speed). I don't think there are any issues but figure was worth asking. I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

http://www.asiatechtrade.com/runcore/runcore-v-msata.html I might get this but I'm not sure about the compatibility as certain X220's are having problems with the msata port..

Answer:Will this msata work with the X220 / X220 Tablet?

I was keeping an eye on those too, but I'm sure they won't work on the X220s that have the mSATA recognition problem. Also, I would like to know the mSATA speed on the X220. Is is 3Gbps (Sata II) or 6Gbps (Sata III)?

Hey guys! Just wondering if someone might have some insights into my issues: I have a Type 4294-CTO X220T 1) I dissassembled the Keyboard and Palm-rest assembly to take a look at the mSATA / mPCI-E area today. I have a 3x3 Centrino card, but only 2 of the 3 connectors are connected. There are 4 antenna wires black, grey, red, blue. Only the Black/Grey ones are connected. Can I just connect one of the other two in order to get 3x3? I DID order a 3x3 screen! 2) Since I have 4 antennas does that mean I have a WWAN configuration, therefore I cannot use a mSATA SSD? Here is my system configuration:          0A59723       SBB ICI7-2620M(2.7GHZ                                    45M3090       VBB GENUWIN7PROFES.64                                    0A59804       SBB GEN WIN7 PRF64 ENGLISH                                    0A59715       ** SBB 12.5MHDLD BT DLMBR3X3ANT                     &... When I use the X220 as a laptop I can duplicate the display through my SmartBoard projector but when I use it as a tablet and it is docked I have to turn the tablet and dock 180 degrees so I am not writing upside down on the smartboard;  that means the dock has the cables coming out the front.  I can undock and plug everything into the X220 but the beauty of the dock is that I don't have to!

I have a desktop that runs Windows 8.1. My x220 tablet runs Windows 7. I was thinking about getting a wacom bamboo tablet for my art in photoshop (which I make on my desktop... x220 isn't powerful enough for what I do in photoshop). Hi all,    I have a really annoying problem...my x220 tablet disconnects from the internet whenever I enter tablet mode. The internet can be working perfectly fine while in non tablet mode but as soon as I switch to tablet mode, my internet disconnects. And if I switch back to non tablet mode from tablet mode, my internet returns almost instantaneously. I can load a page in non tablet mode with no problems, switch to tablet mode and the page stops loading. If I return back to non tablet mode the page resumes loading without so much as a pause or a hiccup. Also, when I switch the computer to tablet mode, wifi networks disappear off of the "available networks" list that were there before the switch.     I've tried everything, from updating network device drivers, reinstalling network device drivers, running diagnostics, reformatting my computer, uninstalling Norton Antivirus, system restoring to days before the last known working date in normal mode and safe mode, and contacting customer support (chat and call, managed to get a hold of a rep) but none of them have worked.    I also used to have a networking log before I reformatted/system reset to factory settings and there were a ton of errors with words like avsc manager failed to "something" ... I'll reinstall the thinkpad network managing program to create another log. Can someone please help me? My last resort is calling lenovo support again to have tech support come to hel... Read more

I have a new X220 Tablet, and the Pen and Tablet functions work perfectly out of the box as long as the unit is on the Ultrabase. As soon as I remove from the Ultrabase (or boot while not connected), the Pen & Tablet functions stop working. Conversely, if I dock the X220, the Pen & Tablet functions begin working again. The behavior is the same regardless of whether I have an external monitor attached or not. Any thoughts?

Hi, I have here a X220 Tablet that seem to have a FAN problem.Often in the last days my CPU temperature is often over 90 CAnd the fan has problem to reduce the temperature.I have also situation that the CPU is going too hot and the tablet switch off! With the CPU tool TPFC.62 I can see that the fan speed is 2300-2500 RPMs.But this seams not enough to be. And now the strange thing:When I disable the graphic adapter ?Intel(R) HD Graphics Family? (Driver 8.15.10.2321) and reboot and do the same thing that I done to get the temperature over 90 C with the intel graphic adapter the temperature is not going over 83 C!!! The fan speed is 3500-3800 RPMs. Can someone helps me with this issue?

Answer:X220 Tablet FAN Problem - temperature over 90 °C - tablet switch off :(

Hi giciorek,

I understand that your fan/temperature problems can be frustrating.  I would try updating your BIOS and also updating Power Manager.  (Some on the forum have tried downloading ThinkPad Fan Control, but that is not an official Lenovo solution.)

Download Power Manager here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS014924

Download BIOS Update here:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS018805

In Power Manager, click Advanced at top right, you can Set Optimize Fan Control to Balance All Parameters under Battery Settings.  Set it to Reduce Noise Dynamically under AC.

Let me know if this helps.

This is actually a previous topic I posted that nobody showed interest in. I spent the last two days investigating into these problems again and got some very disappointing results so I decide to post here once more to elevate this to Lenovo engineers' attention.  There are actually two issues under this X220 with mSATA SSD does not go with Win 8 x64. The two issues are: 1) Under legacy boot, Win 8 x64 installed on mSATA SSD on a X220 will only load Windows for more or less one tenth of all the boot. 2) Under UEFI boot, Win 8 x64 installed on mSATA SSD on a X220 will show error when perform "sfc /scannow" command (Windows System File Check), that usually autochk.exe will be shown to be corrupted along with none or some other system file. And for sure scheduled boot time file system check will not perform (since autochk.exe is the program to perform the file system check). The two issues are mutually exclusive, that is to say under legacy boot SFC will show no problem, and under UEFI boot the system will boot for sure. For the past two days, I've performed all kinds of experiments I could do to make sure the symptoms are related to that configuration. But since I don't dare to temper with my system too much, I didn't remove any other hardware from my X220. My X220 is a 4286CTO produced about May 2011, it comes with most possible in-machine accessories like fingerprint reader, BT, camera, IPS screen. It has i7 2620M CPU so it also has USB 3.0. Wire... The learning curve on this machine is steep if you want to take advantage of all the input options but I've put the time in and I'm starting to love it. There is one thing I wish Lenovo would address though. I see plenty of ThinkPad users with this problem going back to at least 2008, and no solutions forthcoming. The manual states: "On the display bezel near the screen is a row of buttons with which you can control your computer in the tablet mode, without the use of the keyboard."By default the buttons are set to turn your computer off, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, or rotate the screen 90 degrees. The manual goes on to describe how you can customize these buttons via the Tablet Shorcut Menu, which is accessed via Start > Programs > Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools > Tablet Utility. If you open this program you get a dialog box titled "Auto Screen Rotation Settings." This dialog controls what orientation the screen should switch to when you convert into tablet. So it really doesn't have anything to do with the buttons. The only dialog that allows any assignment of the tablet buttons is Windows Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings. Here the Buttons tab is supposed to list the actual buttons on the front panel and let you assign them, but the only one shown is the Screen Rotation button. This works fine, you can set the button's function for a single press and a long press. (Too bad it's not possible to use Shift by itself, but that is as-designed by MS.)It should go without sayi... Thank you for taking the time to read this. I came across a statement that the x220's mSATA was SATA II, and not III. I have been looking for definitive proof that this is the case, such as Lenovo documentation, however I haven't come across any. Lenovo's "Detailed specifications" simple state that the x220 has an mSATA slot, not its specs. Does someone here have a link to something other than hearsay that states the specs of the x220's mSATA slot?

Hi guys, I know this topic has been around for few yrs already, what I want is just an up to date suggestion - which mSATA SSD should I buy (early next month) for my Lenovo X220? Hello Board,we have some i7 based X220 Notebooks here, equiped with integraded USB3.0 Controller. While we successfully upgraded the smaller variants of the X220 with mSATA SSD Drives from Intel, these aren't recognized in the i7 Configurations. We tried this with multiple SSD Drives and multiple Notebooks, so I don't think we're talking about faulty units here, this seems to be a general problem. We also tried different bios versions, up to 1.16 Has anybody else made similar experiences ? My simple assumption is the following: All WWAN Cards which share the same socket are USB based devices, while the mSATA SSD Drives are PCI Express baesd. My first guess is that the PCI Express Lane connected to the mini Express Card socket in the smaller configurations is wired to the USB 3.0 Controller Chip. If this is right, i guess there is no solution to our problem. Any Input appreciated. Greetings!Hibbelharry

Hey, I disassembled my laptop, however, I realized I do not have screws to mount the msata drive. There is one screw M2x3 mm, which is twisted into its place for 3g card or msata drive installation in laptop from factory. Of course you can find it in any household shop yourself.

I will keep WIN on the original drive. I am looking at this drive Intel 525 Series Lincoln Crest SSDMCEAC120B301 mSATA 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD).  Here're my questions: 1. is it ok to install SATA III on the slot which is only SATA II?2. I saw a youtube video showing how to install such a drive and it seems within reach. But what do I do after I install it? Will the system recognize it? if not, what exactly do I have to do? How do I upgrade firmware for this new drive?3. Anything else I will need to do? Thanks in advance and apologize for duplicating some of the questions.

Answer:mSATA for x220 - questions

Hello,

In response to your questions:

SATA specs are backwards compatible, so if you connect a SATA-III drive into a SATA-II interface, it will work fine, just at SATA-II speeds (which are still quite fast).
After the new drive is installed, power up the computer and Microsoft Windows 7 will detect it, just like any other new hardware.  Windows may (or may not) ask you to reboot once after the new hardware has been discovered?I don't recall the exact behavior.  If it does, perform a reboot and then you'll be able to use the drive. After the drive is installed, you can partition and format it using the graphical Disk Management utility (filename:  DISKMGMT.MSC) or the command line-based DiskPart program (filename: DISKPART.EXE).  Another possibility might be to format it using whatever software Intel provides, I believe it is called Intel SSD Toolbox, or something very similar to that. You would typically run a utility from the manufacturer to upgrade the firmware (the aforementioned Intel SSD Toolbox software).  It may have the firmware bundled into it, or query Intel's web site and download the latest firmware from there and flash it onto the SSD.
I think that pretty much covers it; once you have it installed, the firmware updated and the drive formatted, you can begin using it like any other drive on the computer (copy files to it, install software there, etc.).

The only real question I can think of is whether you want to go larger t... Read more

Hello, I recently purchased a used X220 and want to upgrade it with an SSD. I would prefer a mSata SSD over a conventional 2.5" SSD, however I wonder about the implications for fan noise and temperature. I guess running a mSata SSD in the x220 is a pretty common thing, is it not? Do you guys experience heating problems, especially with higher capacity SSDs (I am thinking about buying a 250g or 500g Samsung 840 EVO). Thanks!

Answer:x220 mSata SSD heating considerations?

Hello,

I have noticed no heating/thermal issues using a MyDigitalSSD BP4 240GB mSATA SSD in my X220 for over a year now.  I would imagine that even newer mSATA SSDs draw even less current and radiate less heat than it.

I thought when I installed Intel RST it installed Intel drivers? 2) When I open the the SSD Toolbox and goto System Tuner it says my current storage driver doesn't support DIPM and the I should consider changing drivers, change to what? I have been using my x220 and it's been working great, but I'm slowley runnig out of space. I'm a field tech and our company is picking up a 3rd line and that means more manuals. Right now I'm running a 120gb SSD for the OS with 8gb of ram and a 64gb SD card for the storage. I have 2 opptions in my budget. pickup a 120gb mSATA and run the OS on that and the 120gb SSD as storage, or put back the original 320HDD for storage. I'd love to put in a 240gb mSATA for the OS but at over $200 cant swing that right now.

Answer:X220, storage options. mSATA and SSD?

'afternoon.
welcome to the community!

imho, a great configuration for the X220 is an mSATA SSD for os/swap/temp paired with a fast platter drive in the main bay for data/documents/personal files. others like an all-SSD solution and i don't disagree... i'm just waiting for the 512gb SSDs to come down a little in price, though they're already under $1/gb.

my personal X220 is set up with: 256gb m4Crucial mSATA SSD + 512gb 7200 Hitachi Travelstar (7200rpm/32mb cache) + 16gb ram, configured as above.

in your situation, where you've already got an SSD in your main bay, i'd probably try to sell the 320gb platter drive to raise funds to allow purchase of the bigger mSATA SSD to use as the data drive and leave your OS on the 120gb main bay SSD. then, as budget/price allow, you could upgrade the main bay to a bigger SSD, reconfiguring the contents as apprpriate.

cheers.

Hey everybody, I am loving my X220 greatly, and haven't felt like it's inadequate in any way, except now I need a little bit more storage space. Right now I have: 160GB Intel SSD (came with it)60GB OCZ SSD in the mSATA port I'd like to replace it with a much larger mSATA SSD, and then use the Intel SSD for storing backups or other things along those lines. The question I have, is the mSATA port SATA3 or SATA2?  If it's SATA3, I'd like to take advantage of it by using an SSD like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226321 Right now my boot time from the bootloader to the login manager in Linux is 4.6 seconds (very customized Archlinux install), and it's very snappy, but I can't help but wonder if I can make it faster ;-) I have the Core i7 version, if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Hi, I have just ordered a X220 with the i5-2410m, and was about to also order a 64GB msata SSD. At first I thought i would be fine because the msata problems were only on i7 models, but now i have found a few people saying it also affects some i5 models, however no one lists which ones. Is there a definative list anywhere on which models can use msata anywhere? Also, if i need to wait for bios update, can i install that prior to intalling windows? Or do you need operating system installed to flash bios? Also, does using one 250GB 5400 HD plus msata use much more power? Does anyone know the model of 250GB drive the X220 comes with, so i can check the power draw? Thanks everyone.....looking forward to my new travelling powerhouse. Was origannly going to by samsung series 9 but am glad I found out about this, should be more reliable for travelling the world, and much less likely to get stolen. At first glance, it's hard to tell whether a ThinkPad is new or 10 years old. The X220 is a stealthy machine with its combination of old styling and diminutive size. At my office, I was using my X220 to show a colleague how to do something and he said, "You have that installed on your netbook?"

Hi All, I'm enjoying my first ever thinkpad X220 for the last couple of months and love it. It's beautiful and powerful machine. The machine is top of the line in x220 series. The only thing missing is an SSD. 1. System has Ericsson GSM/GPS card. So, does this mean I cannot install mSATA?2. I would like to replace my HDD with SSD. What other SSDs other than lenovos any of you have successfully tested and using? lenovo SSDs are **bleep** expensive.3. What 54mm expresscardis are useful for me? I would like to increase storage. What brand/models do you recommend? I too have noticed the screen light bleeding. It's not bugging me much. But I've seen many complaining about this. Is there a resolution to this problem? Thanking you in advance. regards,Shereef

Answer:X220 mSATA, SSD & ExpressCard Questions

Hello,

The X220 has two MiniPCIe slots, one accepts a "full-height" card that is ~51mm long.  The other accepts a "half-height" card that is ~28mm long.  In the X220, the half-height slot contains the Wi-Fi (802.11n wireless) adapter, while the full-height slot contains the WWAN (3G modem) adapter.

The full-height slot on the X220 is designed to acccomodate either a MiniPCIe or a mSATA card.  I do not know whether the half-height slot will recognize a mSATA card.  If you wish to use a mSATA SSD in your X220, you will need to remove the Ericsson GSM/GPS card.  You could then use something like a 3G hotspot for connectivity.

The X220 has a 2.5" hard disk drive bay, but this bay only accepts a 7mm high drive, not the more common 9.5mm high drives.  There are, however, numerous hard disk (up to 500GB, 7200 RPM) and solid state drives (up to 600GB) that fit into the drive bay.  I have not used a 7mm high SSD before, but did see a few for sale on U.S. retailer NewEgg's web site.

I have used a Wintec 48GB ExpressCard SSD in my W510 for storage and it worked fine, although it did get warm after being in the system for a while.  64 ,96 and 128GB models are now available as well.  I would imagine these work identically in the X220, though I do not think they are bootable.  These are 34mm cards, so you might want to get a little plastic spacer bracket that fills the remaining 20mm if having that open is an iss... Hello,I have fitted a MyDigitalSSD 64GB mSATA to my X220. I installed Windows7 from a USB stick onto this (eventually) and all seemed to be working OK. However, I ran a check and the SSD is not performing well (see picture). I since discovered that a driver is needed for this card, which I have found (PhisonFW-S5FAM012). I have set up a USB stick with the relevent files, but the X220 will not boot to it. I managed to get Windows7 to boot from USB by copying the BOOTX64.EFI as described in another thread. Any idea how I would boot the mSATA drivers? (By the way, I realise this will wipe the mSATA drive - never mind!) Many thanks and best wishes.

Answer:install mSATA drivers on X220

Have you gone into your BIOS and changed the boot order to make the mSATA drive your 1st boot drive (or 2nd after the USB stick)?  If not maybe that will work. Matt

I figured installing an MSATA drive would be simple.  The hardware installation went well and I ran the Factory Recovery Disks program to create a recovery USB drive. It all seemed so simple. After disconnecting my spinning media, I found that I couldn't boot from the USB drive. Something about an invalid partition table. I ready a couple forum posts and figured the USB partition wasn't marked as 'active'. No problem. I popped it into another machine and opened Disk Manager. Unfortunately, the option to mark the partition as Active was grayed out. No problem, i figured, I'll just start the process all over again and mark it as active on the X220 before I remove it. I formatted the USB drive. Now, I find that I can no longer create a recovery drive since (apparently) only one copy is permitted. Sigh. OK - how do I get a fresh copy of the OS installed on the MSATA drive? I *could* drive copy from the spinning media with another machine, but then I lose the sector alignment benefits of a fresh OS install.  What are my options?  Thanks!!

Answer:X220 MSATA Install - how bad am I hosed?

Hi, x220_guy, and welcome to the Community!Refering to the unbootable usb stick I'd assume it depends of many factors like stick' vendor and model, the size, condition (new or used), even file system during boot media creation. The needed size is less then 16 gB, my advice isn't to use SanDisk drives. If you still need in advice how to create bootable usb flash drive follow the page below http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-74246As for the OS installation onto the msata. You can clone the whole "old" HDD, do the fresh install or recover from the Lenovo Recovery Media. Purchase Recovery Media for your preloaded OS reduction or do it again. Recovery.ini is a key file for that task.

1. Does the x220 thinkpad support SATA III 6Gb/s for the mSATA slot or through the 2.5" drive?2. If so, is it possible to connect the mSATA via PCIe in a way it will support 6Gb/s ?2. Answer:X220 mSATA, SSD & ExpressCard Questions

Good day and welcome to the community.

1- The mPCIe slot that can accept either WWAN cards or mSATA SSDs is limited to SATA II (3Gb/s).
2- Not that I know of or have ever heard reported. SATA III is supported on the main bay and the dock connectors.
3- I, and others, are running 256GB mSATA SSDs quite successfully. My X220 hasn't stuttered once in over 2 years.

Hope this helps.

Answer:X220 - list of compatible mSata SSD disks

Hello,

I have had good results using MyDigitalSSD, Patriot Memory and Samsung mSATA SSDs in my various ThinkPads, including my X220.

I have never heard of one brand being particularly worse than another, and as they are standardized parts, you should just be able to pick a brand and model you like based on performance, price, characteristics, etc., just like you would a conventional hard disk drive.

Hello Forum,in my x220 (win7x64, 16GB) a Samsung 850PRO 512G SSD is working flawlessly since about 6 months. Some days ago I have bought a Samsung mSATA 850EVO 512GB to add it in the mSATA-slot.Result:- After adding the mSATA 850EVO, the BIOS posts "Error 2100: Dectection Error on HD0", which means the SATA 850PRO is no more recognized.- When I remove the SATA 850PRO, the mSATA is still recognized - but thats not the config I want to use.- When I replace the SATA 850PRO by the original SATA-HD (Hitachi), at the _first_ start the BIOS posts an error for the mSATA (HD2).It still can boot and start Win7, but freezes after some seconds. And after a restart (2nd Boot) I get Error2101, HD0 incompatible.Status:- the x220 has the recent BIOS from October 2016,- the 850PRO the recent firmware EXM03B6Q,- currently there is no firmware update for the 850EVO.Obviously the 850EVO is disturbing the SATA-Handshaking. Any suggestions what I could do to make it work? And finally, who has a working combination of SATA + mSATA:- which SATA-SSD works with- which mSATA-SSD ?Thanks, Thilo

Do you know if the 500GB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD worked before you used it?  Perhaps you could try it in another machine, or with an mSATA to 2.5" adapter, just to verify that it works correctly?  Although it is pretty rare to occur, you could have gotten one that is just not working.

My X220 came with the original 320 HDD AND a 160 SDD.Running out of space. I am looking into 240 and 480GB SDD. But I read that teh X220 is using another (under keyboard) drive, mSATA. a) How can I look up the size of that drive?b) What is it normal used for?c) How can I access/check what is on there?d) Does it make sense to upgrade the capacity of this mSATA?

Answer:x220 4290 - mSATA: current size? upgrade?

x220 can't be equipped HDD and normal SSD at the same time as there is one slot for 2,5" 7 mm in hight drive, which supports sata II specification. Also there is combined full size mini pci-e/msata slot for wwan card or msata SSD in mini pci-e formfactor, supports sata II specification.Correct msata drive is visible within BIOS Setup or any disk management tool like the system one. The size of unformatted drive is shown within BIOS Setup also, the real size is a bit smaller (the difference is about 8...10%).msata SSD drive in combination with installed HDD can be used for cache purpose using cache sw like Lenovo ExpressCache. Usually the drives with limited size of 16..24 GB are using for that. It's a good choice to use the msata SSD with bigger size (at least 64 GB) for OS and programs and HDD - for data.

So I've read through the history of the msata and the x220 (4286-CTO) and how the BIOS revisions were required during the middle of last year in order to get the Intel 310 and some others to work. Thinking that my little x220 with Bios revision 1.26 (i7, 8gb, 4286-CTO) would be fine, I purchased a Kingston SSDNow mS100 64GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SMS100S2/64G and installed it yesterday. The instal went without a hitch, but when I restarted the machine, I received a 2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata) error.   I've seen that the 2101 error has been mentioned in relation to a couple of Sandisk msata drives on the forum, but those discussions didn't seem to go anywhere. I just got off my second call with Lenovo support (30 minutes today and 25 minutes last night), only to have them tell me that msata is not supported by my 4286-CTO.  That sounds incorrect, as others with the 4286-CTO seem to have luck with Intel and Renice. What am I doing wrong?  Is this something that another BIOS revision could cure?  At least on one of the sandisk discussions, the OP said that he/she had tested the drive in another computer without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual drives.   Somebody else mentioned that some drives are not compliant with the JEDEC standard, but that doesn't sound like an explanation to me either.  Thoughts?  Help! Best, sad x220

Answer:2101 Error: X220 with Kingston 64GB msata

I have the same issue with x220.  The mSATA I have is the Sandisk SDSA4DH-064G.  I can also add that the function of the mSATA is the same regardless of whether the mSATA is used in the mSATA slot or on an adapter card in the SATA hard drive bay (Error is 2100 rather than 2101, but the text is the same).  For this reason, I believe the Lenovo BIOS is unable to configure the mSATA drive appropriately.  I imagine that Lenovo could quickly resolve this with a new BIOS. I have tested this drive on a desktop consisting of a Asus P9X79 Deluxe + Intel 3960x running Windows 7, 64-bit.  Device is recognized by BIOS and WIndows Disk Manager.

Hey all. First off-- I'm Miz Black Crow, it's my first time on the Lenovo boards, because before tonight, I had never owned a Lenovo. But I have to say, this community seems incredibly awesome in every single way, and you guys have been a MAJOR asset in deciding what laptop to buy and how to make it, well, better. I'm the proud momma to a new-to-me, factory-refurbished X220 with an i7 2.7Ghz, 320GB 7200RPM HDD, 6GB RAM (now 16GB RAM, because yesssss), IPS screen, the works. Even came with unexpected bonuses of the webcam, fingerprint scanner AND the dock (none of which Lenovo mentioned in the listing... sweeeeeet). So, being a tinkerer, I swapped for 16GB RAM (booted fine, win7 recognized all of it), made recovery disks, pulled the HDD out, installed a 120GB OCZ Nocti mSATA drive, booted the system. The BIOS recognized the drive but, since it's a new drive, no OS. Dropped the bootable recovery disk in the oh-so-handy dock's DVD drive, ThinkVantage Product Recovery started right up. Asked me for the first data disk, which I happily obliged it with, and now it's.... ...sitting. Laughing at me. No blinking lights, no progress on the progress bar, no changes at all to tell me if it's working (and since it's an SSD, no drive spin to listen for). I have a mydigitalssd msata card that I just got and it's not detected in my laptop.  It's the smart series 256 gb with the sandforce controller.  the laptop is model 4286cto with the i7 CPU and usb 3.0.  I have worked with mydigitaldiscount and am continuing to work with them but in the mean time I want to see if anyone else has had a similar issue or has any ideas.  I have thus far had good interactions with them and their support. I have upgraded and downgraded the firmware various time, from 1.31 to 1.19 and i'm on 1.28 right now.  I did this because i know the X220 with the i7 used to have issues with msata that was fixed in bios 1.18.   the msata card has 2 led's on it, they both momentarily light up on boot, then one of them stays solid on blue after that.  The bios does not seem to detect anything for this device.  If i go to the diagnostic splash screen it does not detect it, if I hit f12 for the boot manager I don't see the msata ssd.  If i go into windows device manager i don't see the ssd.  If i do an lspci in linux I don't see the ssd, if i do an fdisk -l i don't see it, nor do i see it in the dmesg. MyDigitalDiscount was great and cross shipped a replacement to me right away, they got my old one back and tested it and said it worked fine, the new one exhibits the exact same problem and they tested it before shipment. I'm at my wit's end here.  I'm down to thinking the ssd is incompatible with ... Hello,

I was not able to install Windows 7 Professional x64 using the recovery media obtained from IBM on an X220 (M/T: 4286-CTO) with BIOS v1.31 to a MyDigitalSSD 128GB BP3 Bullet Proof 3 mSATA III (6G) SSD Solid State Drive - MDMS-BP3-128, which uses the PHISON S8 controller, I believe.  However, I had no problems installing Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 to the SSD using an ISO downloaded from MSDN.

I know this is not exactly helpful, but perhaps the folks at MyDigitalSSD will let you swap the part with a model using the PHISON controller and you can install Windows 7 using a genuine Microsoft ISO/DVD.

HelloI just bought a mydigitalssd 128GB mSATA ssd. After I installed it windows no longer starts. It posts and I can access the BIOS menu but after that it freezes on a black screen for a long time and then flashes a BSOD and restarts. While it is frozen the battery indicator light (next to the bluetooth light) gets stuck on (normally it flashes during boot up).I have a day one pre-ordered x220 with the i7 processor. I updated to the 1.28 BIOS and nothing changed. Windows 7 x64 is installed on my primary drive (vertex 3 ssd). I only want to use the mSATA ssd for more storage. I don't want to install an operating system on it or anything. Right now it is not recognized in the BIOS menu.Any ideas for something to try? Is there some BIOS settings that I need to change? Does this sound like the behaviour of a defective mSATA ssd (strange that it would only prevent windows from starting)?Any help would be greatly appreciated! I need to figure this out quick since I may have to send the drive away for return. Thanks!

Answer:x220 installing mSATA SSD causes Windows to fail to start!

I have some new information that might help someone to understand my problem. It turns out that the mydigitalssd is recognized in the BIOS menu. It is listed as "SATA SSD" (there is no brand name or anything so I didn't notice it). Does anyone else have this mSATA SSD? If so, what is it named in the BIOS menu? When I start my computer it still freezes right when Windows should be starting. When I start it again it asks if I want to run Windows Error recovery. If I run it, it doesn't find any errors. After it ran though I used the advanced options and opened a command prompt. I was able to format the mSATA ssd, assign it a drive letter, etc. This means that the ssd works and that my computer can see it yet it still prevents Windows from starting! (If I take it out, WIndows boots normally). This is really frustrating. Any ideas? Do I need some different drivers? Also, when it freezes it flashes a BSOD before it restarts and I managed to take a picture so I could read the message. It is a Stop error (0x0000007B). If anyone can be of any assistance, please reply. I live in Japan and I don't speak Japanese well enough to get help from a computer technician here.

I just bought the following X220. (Choices In french)After years, I was dreaming for a small lenovo old fashion style, which make me chosse the X220, as the X1 seems to have a lot of lack, and not the old fashion design, and the T420 not so good battery, and bigger one.So my first LENOVO, and I am so excited, so long to wait for it..   I have a few question, after readings page and page about this laptop. - Is the mSATA port installed by defaut on every X220 ? (can not find this answer in PDF and forums) I did not took the Ericsson option, and leave the default choice, which was "Large band integrated, option". So can I buy a mSATA drive before receiving my X220, and be sure that I have the mSATA port to install it? In the lenovo site, I don't have option to select a mSATA drive. - It seems that the Intel 310 80Go is the standard reference for everybody. I presume it is the more stable one, but not the most quicker. As the ssd technology goes quick, I would like to get your "actually" return about the other option, like the Renice or MySsd or other one, at reasonnable price (<250EUR Max), for the OS only. I saw theses models:- 80GB INTEL 310 STABLE BUT SPEED--- 64/128GB MyDigitalSSD 50mm (old ???) The Intel 310 SSD with firmware FW 02HD or later does have TRIM.  Intel provides a SSD Toolbox that helps to optimize their SSD drives.  I have the X220 with I7 processor and bios 1.21 and have good performance, generally completing booting in about 20 seconds.  The msata slot can also be used for wireless cellular service, so if you one installed the msata slot will not be available.  Jim

When I try to dock or undock the X220, the laptop freezed, nothing esle you can do but reboot the computer. It's really annoying. the laptop works fine if you don't do the dock/undock when it's running.I think the BIOS should be the latest one. Docking: ThinkPad 0A33932 for X220Laptop: X220I5-25404G80G(msata)+320GWin7Pro-32 Is anyone here who have the same problem or any suggestions?Any reply appreciated. Regards,Sven

Answer:X220 with mSATA ssd always freezes when docks/undock from the docking station

Hello,

A few things to check:

Make sure that both the X220 and the mSATA SSD have the latest BIOS/firmware installed
Make sure X220 has latest ThinkVantage device drivers and Microsoft OS updates installed
Try running a CHKDSK on the SSD

Even if those don't solve the problem, knowing that you've checked them will help rule those out as issues.

What is the easiest way to copy the Lenovo image to a mSATA drive so that my X220 will boot from the device?

Should I just burn recovery discs, install the mSATA while leaving the 2.5" port empty, and run the recovery process?   I'm only getting a 32GB mSATA drive so maybe copying an image may not work unless the space required is signifcantly less than 32GB for Win 7 64 bit.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Easiest way to copy X220 Lenovo image to a mSATA drive

I must say that Win7 might run out of space very fast on a 32 gig drive. On a brand new X220:Win7 takes up 29 GB, Lenovo Recovery is 12GB..

[$0.00]
12.5" HD Multi WW 3x3 No Camera
Selecting this option may delay your shipment more than 4 weeks. Why even release a model when both screen options are delayed more than four weeks? It's a phantom launch. No real product is available. I first checked this an hour or two after "launch" so it's always been like this. This is rediculous and is just a cash grab with the idea "see! it's available, please don't give your money to another company". Don't release products you can't ship. Don't release products before every major option is available, i.e., Gorilla Glass, i5, i7 processors...

Answer:The x220 Tablet is not available

It's interesting that apparently the Canadian site actually tells you in advance that there will be a 4+ week delay. On the US site, none of the options have notices saying they may cause delays. The order says "ships in 8-12 business days" all the way up until you check out, at which point it changes to "estimated ship date" in 5+ weeks (5/27/11).

Question: Tablet X220

Hi, Looking to verify that the tablet X220 can run dual monitors using the Thinkpad Ultrabase Series 3 Dock.  Would like to use two external monitors, one has a vgs connection and the other has DVI.  Could one monitor use the VGA connection and for the DVI monitor, can an adapter be used to connect to the display port? Thanks,Aaron

Answer:Tablet X220

When you are docked on the Ultrabase Series 3, the dock's displayport and vga can both be active. Yes you can use the displayport to dvi converter to connect to your second monitor.

Question: x220 tablet DOA.

So. I ended up, after about a month and a half of lurking on forums and reading reviews, purchasing an X220t with most of the bells and whistles, along with an extended next day onsite warrranty, extra pen, etc. I track it all the way from China on the UPS site every three hours. It has been an unhealthy obsession. And it arrived in the mail. Dead. Won't work. Won't boot. DOA (mostly. several indicator lights flash a bit, but I don't hear a HD, fans spinning, or screen turning on.)  I've talked with tech support (who did what they could [Nice people!]) but they were unable to get any immediate help or provide any advice beyond 'we'll call you'.Also, they couldn't find verification that I had a warranty for awhile. My concern is that this is for college, and I'll be going to school on the other end of the country (Colorado School of Mines!). And I'll be leaving shortly, and work has left me short on time, etc. So, how common is this? Should I try to get my money back and just buy a Fujitsu tablet, or something else from a retailer? There is always bragging about thinkpads being so tough, and mine is dead after a ride through UPS via Worldport. ( I know... could be any number of components that were dead to begin with, etc.) Are they just crap? I'm trying to keep it cool, but I just spent a whole lot of money, including on a warranty which is generally just gravy for most companies, and I've recieved a very pretty lump of plastic (again, I'm not an ent... Answer:x220 tablet DOA.

Sideburns, welcome to the forum,

I'm sorry to read about your experience, something like this must be a huge disappointment after having waited eagerly for the arrival of your new ThinkPad.

So far you seem to have handled the situation correctly and would ask you to take a look at this post in our FAQs; Mark's Advice About DOA systems.

I personally feel that in your situation, due to the time limitations you mention, the quickest route for you to persue would be with support and having the system repaired. Yes you have stong arguments to ask for a refund or an exchange system, but these could potentially take longer to realise than having the system repaired.

As to your question to how common this is; in my experience it's not at all common. I personally have been selling Think products for over 11 years and can count on one hand the number of systems I have seen which were literally DOA.

I just purchased X220 Tablet. While purchasing I was made to understand that the system comes with Mobile Broadband Ready. However I am unable to use  my SIM card. I have inserted the SIM in the slot underneath the Battery, as was mentioned in the manual. But it does not work, no internet connection and in Access Connection the Mobile Broadband button is greyed. Can some one explain reason? I am able to use the sim with the pocketwifi, the tablet is able to detect through wifi but I wanted my 3G to be inthe laptop so taht I don;t have to use pocketwifi or USB dongle.

I'm configuring an order for a maxed x220 tablet. I really want a large (512gb or higher SSD). Since that's not a factory option I guess I'll have to go aftermarket, open the case and do a home upgrade. I've done plenty of drive upgrades before but not an SSD.My review of message board makes it seem like there can be fit problems with some SSDs in the x220, and that with SSDs in general you should do a clean install and not a full clone (with OS).  That always raises issues with drivers and QA'ing the install to make sure you got it all back to factory fresh. I've read the posts about using a smaller SSD in the extra slot as a boot drive and keeping files on HDD, but I would really like to have everything on the faster media. So my question is, are there any x220 tablet owners out there that have self-installed large SSDs. Any tips, warnings or reassurances? Thx

Answer:x220 tablet and large SSD

HI,  I installed Intel 320 SSD (160 Gb) and used Acronis to clone the previous drive. It worked well. What may be of greater interest to you, is that I had to remove a black spacer attached to the SSD to make it 7mm from 9.5mm.  It can be easily done with Intel SSDs (except 510, I think), but you will have to order shorter screws online. Just search Google or this forum for screws for Intel SSD. Good luck!

I just got an X220 Tablet, with windows 7 pro. When I turn on the autolock (with integrated camera) function, it freezes the trackpoint and touchpad after I re-login. This is really sucks and I have to restart the computer to fix this. Do any of you guys have the same problem? I guess Lenovo should fix the bug.

Answer:X220 Tablet: Autolock bug

I tried this on X220 tablet and could not find any problem like you say.  Do you have any more details?
- Does this always happen when autolock locks the system, or does it only happen sometimes?
- Does this happen if you press WindowsKey-L to lock the system?
- What version of autolock do you have installed?  You can find it in control panel -> programs -> programs and features

Hi everyone I have had a Lenovo X220 tablet for a while now. I bought it on eBay. I can't send it to lenovo to fix, of course. My config (currrent):Win 8.1 pro (legal)Sandisk 128gb SSDLenovo 2x4 gb ram My problem is the following: as some in this forum experienced too, it just reboots randomly for no reason. It goes "clic", black screen and back to bios then OS.The behavior is the exact same as if you kept the power button pressed until it reboots. What I've been testing so far:- Switching OS (I've tested win7, win8, ubuntu, debian, elementaryos, archlinux)- Switching HDD (one SSD, one HDD)- Switching ram (removed one, removed the other, switched positions)- Flashing the bios, upgrading, downgrading it)- Watching the CPU, fan, temp: all normal. For some reason the best experience was with Windows 8.What could it be? I used lenovo diagnostics tools downloaded from their official site, but the only one that works is memorytest (which proved to be ok) I don't want another computer, I love that one and I don't want to change. Some people mention driver issues (graphics card, power management, stylus)... Could you please, please, help me? I don't know what to do anymore. And I don't have the money to get another computer right now. I tried using the registry hack in Windows 8 to stop my battery charging higher than 95%, and was sucesful. however this has also had the effect of meaning that when I plug the charger in when the laptop is on, it says "plugged in, not charging". If I turn the laptop off, or put it into Standby, then plug the charger in, it starts charging fine and continues to do so after turning it back on. I have tried re-installing Windows 8.1 (and not installed any of the power management drivers) incase it was a driver problem, however this has not fixed it. If there is some way to completly reset the battery controller (i'm not sure if the chip that does this is in the battery of laptop) then I would be very glad to know.

Hi guys, New x220 tablet. Has been working fine, left it for the weekend and coming back to it this morning it will not bootup. Is built with Windows 7 and I had the full functionality of the biometrics running and sync'd with drivelock/bios password. On trying to boot this morning using the power button, I press it once, the button lights green (around edge), for a second, then disappears, the biometric light goes green for a second then disappears.  Nothing else happens from there. Have tried the usual - battery replaced, booting on just power etc but same happens.  I cannot hear or feel the hdd spinning (i have an identical model also which is working fine). Have searched through the forums and inet but cannot find any issues relating to the light sequence etc (wondering if it had a specific sequence to tell me what the errors are).... Suspect HDD has gone as it is just not spinning, but cannot be sure as I cannot get to BIOS or anything else..... Any ideas?

Answer:x220 Tablet will not bootup

Edited to add: I swapped hdd out and put it in identical tablet - HDD seems to work fine. Popped it back into the offending tablet, tried to switch power on and the green light around power button alternates with biometric light (on and off) for around 30 seconds and ends up with biometric light green and power light off.... Also swapped out memory - still nothing - no access to BIOS etc - no warning beeps...

Answer:PLEASE HELP - Should I buy Tablet or Standard X220?

tablet allows you to directly write on the screen or use your finger as an input device (if you select the multitouch option), so if you have need for such feature, then the tablet obviously will the best choice. If you don't use the handwriting or touch screen option, then the normal x220 laptop is better, as it is slightly lighter than the tablet model and also slightly more rugged due to the different hinge design.

The truth is I don't know whether I should get a X220 tablet or standard X220.  I just think the tablet thing could be fun when reading, sorting and editing photos, etc., and I'd still have a X220 if it turns out to be useless.  Is this a correct assumtion? =)I've seen X220 tables come with an UltraBase and a DVD-RW drive.  I'd like a setup where I have some sort of docking station at my desktop were I can attach to a larger (DisplayPort) monitor, a keyboard, scanner, etc, and quickly snap my pc out for mobile work, preferably with the option of having a DVD-drive attached.  Would a X220 tablet with the UltraBase fit in the Dock or should the UltraBase be removed first?  Can the UltraBase be seen as a portable clip-on DVD-drive or should it be regarded as an alternative to a Dock?  Or put in a use-case:  I have my X200 tablet with the UltraBase and drive.  Can I quickly click this in the Dock and continue (say) watching DVD on my monitor?  Or do I have to move all cables from the Dock to the UltraBase?  Same for standard X220?What's the max output when connected to a UltraBase and/or Dock?  Or put in a different way: Can the X220 tablet fully use a 1920x1200 monitor?  What's the max resolution?  Same for standard X220?Where can I find jucy specs like these?  The standard white paper only shows very brief defails and only for the laptop's own screen.I seems like there are two versions of the X220 tablet disp... Answer:Questions regarding X220 tablet before I buy one

1. That is "correct" but it would also be "expensive." The tablet is several hundred dollars more expensive for a feature you may never use.2. The UltraBase IS a dock. And for the tablet, it is the ONLY dock. It is technically portable but I wouldn't recommend carrying it around. As far as I know, the X220 without tablet has other options, but you wouldn't be able to use an UltraBase and a dock at the same time.3. The tablet can handle 1920x1200 and higher, but I haven't personally tested beyond 1920x1080 (my monitor is an HDTV which only goes up to 1080p). 5. The Gorilla glass is only on the outdoor model. It does not support two finger touch. Both displays have stylus input. 7. Ignoring the weight difference, the experience should be identical, although I haven't tested this myself. I would recommend against getting a tablet. I and many others are having great issue with the accuracy of the stylus input.

There are a lot of messages on x220 non-tablet version about CPU throttling (i7 processor) and high pitch fan noise. Anyone received the tablet version and having similar issues? Lucky folks who have already received their tablets, can you please post your experience?

Answer:X220 tablet feedback

I have been using my X220 Tablet (4294CTO) since Friday.  I can barely tell it's running, even with the fan running at high speed due to high CPU temps while encoding video.  No noticeable fan noise unless I am in an Extremely quiet environment.I have the i7-2620M.

Is the ExpressCard slot on the X220 Tablet 2.0 or not? I have looked at the new Lenovo Tabook PDF and all it specified was that it was compatable with both the 34mm and 54mm slot standards. I wish to buy a USB 3.0 ExpressCard but only if I know the slot on the X220 Tablet can provide the full throughput of an ExpressCard 2.0 slot.

Every time I find the key to success, someone changes the lock.

So I have had my tablet now for about 3 weeks or so and since the past week or week and a half I've noticed that the computer takes a long time to start up.  From when I turn the power on to when I get the Lenovo Thinkpad display is within a few seconds which is the norm.  However it takes quite a while, about 30 to 45 seconds for the log on screen to show up and then about the same for everything to be fully loaded and ready to go.  I will also check the log on times again and update the next time I boot up. Intel i7-2620320 GB hard drive8GB ram Any info is helpful and thanks in advance.

Answer:X220 Tablet slow startup

ok here are the official times for startup. power on to thinkpad logo 8-10 secstarting windows at the 20 sec markwindows log on page at 1min 20 sec markall icons loaded and ready to go at 3 min 20 sec mark Everything else about the computer is great and  once its on its runs super fast and I don't have any problems other than having to manually downloading the ultranav driver because it mysteriously went away.  I'm just a little frustrated with the abnormally long start up time.

Does anyone know when the i5 / i7 processors, Camera and Wimax options will become availablte? Lenovo US site only has the i3 option available (or is the i3 configuration the only one that will be  available for the x220 in the US??) Also is the Integrated Mobile Broadband (Sierra Wireless MC8355 - Gobi 3000 option open to worldwide usage or is it locked to a US network.

Hi, I just received my X220 Tablet, it has the UltraNav touchpad AND the touchscreen.  The mouse was not working correctly, lots of pauses when highlighting or copy/pasting.  Also, screens wouldn't finish loading on some websites without moving mouse.  Called TechSupport, she signed onto my computer and downloaded new (updated) driver.  Worked perfectly!  Until... I turned on the machine the next day (actually I woke it up but it happened with start as well).  Completely frozen mouse, like the entire thing didn't exist.  Weird: only on my own profile, not my husband's and not the Admin that I later created.  Managed to get into Control Panel > Mouse and found the UltraNav tab with all info grayed out, like there was no driver at all!  Went to drivers, found 2: the original and the new.  Should one have been removed?  Is it OK to have 2?  Reinstalled the newer driver and everything OK til I shut it down again, then back to square 1.  It's like the computer has decided there is no driver at all when I shut it off, even when I only sleep. Called back TS a few times, finally someone told me to delete my whole profile and create it again (after moving it to a hard drive so it would save all my docs and settings...which it did not save EVERYTHING, not my bookmarks, not all my programs, not all my files...fortunately, I also backed up everything to same hard drive the more traditional w... Hi, I just realized that their won't be any usb 3.0 port on the x220 tablet. Does anzone knows the reason? Will it be possible to customize it and inset this port? Thanks-ludide

Answer:X220 tablet --- no usb 3.0 port serial

I hope you're wrong. That would simply be the straw that beaks the camel's back. As if 16:9 screen wasn't bad enough. From what I've understood previously, USB 3.0 was supposed to be an option. But now I checked the recent tabook and indeed I can't find any mention of USB 3.0 in X220T. That's just retarded.

Hi, Does anyone have a suggestion for a good sleeve for the X220 Tablet with a 6-cell battery? There is a thread http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/What-case-sleeve-do-you-use-for-your-X220/m-p/... for the X220, but if I've understood things correctly the tablet X220 is not quite the same size as the non-tablet version. Personally I'm looking for a simple, cheap and discreet sleeve that fits the machine quite snugly. Thanks.

Answer:X220 Tablet sleeve suggestions

In the end I bought one from a store and so could try them out. The Targus SKIN laptop case, 34cm/13.4", fits my X220 tablet with 6 cell battery perfectly, and seems well-made. It was 14 in store, so relatively cheap.

Hello Everyone! I am having inconsistent performance with my Lenovo X220 Tablet/Notebook and the Ultra Series 3 Docking station.  Occasionally, I am able to boot the system from the docking station and sign on through my external keyboard and monitor.  However, sometimes I must open the tablet up and turn on from the laptop itself, when this occurs, if I close the laptop lid, it turns the system off.  The most recent issue I've had when downloading drivers and other tasks that required rebooting the computer, when attempting to restart the computer in the docking station is not possible, i.e., not from the docking station and not from the computer.  In these instances I have had to remove the computer from the docking station to restart and then place it back into the docking station once Windows has started.  Again, with this type of start-up, I must keep the tablet open to keep it powered on. Is there a specific "docking mode" control somewhere on the computer so that when I'm using the docking station I don't have to go through these different steps to start up the computer?  I was unable to find any solutions to this in the user manual and I searched this site and did not find anyone else having similar problems - so I'm guessing there is a simple solution that I'm unaware of. Thank you for any assistance provided!

Answer:X220 Tablet Docking Issues

Did you ever get any help on this?  I am having the EXACT SAME ISSUES!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
