X230 Tablet Ultrabase Compatibility

Question: X230 Tablet Ultrabase Compatibility

I am in the process of upgrading my X200 Tablet to the X230T. I had the ultrabase with the X200T with the following accessories Serial Ultrabay Slim DVD Multi (P/N 42T2515) and the ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II (P/N 43R1984). I have yet to talk with anyone at Lenovo or read anywhere online if these two accessories with be compatible with the Thinkpad Series 3 Ultrabase. Does anyone have any further information. I would hope I would not need to purchase these again.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X230 Tablet Ultrabase Compatibility

they use the same type of connector and slots, so it should be compatible in that regard.

I have a X230 Tablet with the Outdoor display, meaning it requires the digitizer pen and does not work with fingers. The pen that came with the tablet is not pressure sensitive. If at all possible, I would love to get a pressure sensitive pen, but I can't find a list of compatibility anywhere. Apparently there aren't all that many of these tablets out there in the Wild. If anyone can help point me in the direction of a pressure sensitive pen for my tablet, I would be very grateful. (Or if one does not exist, let me know and I'll stop living in false hope!)

I have a new X220 Tablet, and the Pen and Tablet functions work perfectly out of the box as long as the unit is on the Ultrabase. As soon as I remove from the Ultrabase (or boot while not connected), the Pen & Tablet functions stop working. Conversely, if I dock the X220, the Pen & Tablet functions begin working again. The behavior is the same regardless of whether I have an external monitor attached or not. Any thoughts?

Question: x230 ultrabase

Hello, I would like to buy an x230 with an ultrabase docking station containing a DVD player. From Ultrabase series 3 page[1] there is no mention of x230 compatibility. And from "customize & buy" that docking station had "for X220 Tablet only" notice (seems it got removed recently, but it is still in the French webpage). So is that ultrabase compatible with x230 afterall?? My 2nd question is about the ultrabase's DVD device: I currently have one in my x200s' ultrabase[2] and I'm wondering if the same device can be transfered from the old ultrabase to the newer one. Regards,Xavier Claessens. [1] http://shop.lenovo.com/us/itemdetails/0A33932/460/6D6BA2100E444BD7956CBA9014F9E418#learnMore[2] http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-70299

It's not a major issue; i just upgraded to windows 8.1 Pro from Win 7. Previously, in windows 7 when my lappy is docked to the ultrabase, there's a menu option under start --> undock computer. Is there a similar option in windows 8. Is it safe to just pull the undock lever?? Thanks

Check if the dock appears under "safely remove" in the desktop taskbar tray (where you can eject USB sticks etc.)

We've just received new X230s in work, shipped with Ultrabase. While the laptop itself seems fine, we are having troubles with the Ultrabase. The Ultrabase works normally after computer startup, but we are having troubles with undocking/redocking the laptop. The symptoms are:When the undock button is pressed (either in Start menu or the hardware button on the ultrabase), the "Computer is successfully undocked" message appears almost instantly. This contrasts with behavior of X200 ultrabase that I was using before X230.If I undock and redock the laptop, the USB ports do not work and the red light on the ultrabase does not light up.If I wait several minutes before undocking the laptop after pressing the undock button, the USB stops working. If I then physically undock the laptop and redock it, all works as expected, including USBs.Sometimes, if I undock the computer right after the message that I may do so and then redock it and wait for some time, a message like "USB 2.0 MTT HUB Controller cannot be ejected undocked" appears and then the USB ports start working again. Needless to say that this issue is very annoying and kind of defeats the purpose of having the dock, since one cannot quickly and reliably disconnect/reconnect the laptop to external devices. One more point - I've reinstalled the shipped Windows installation by the Windows 7 Enterprise edition (64bit) available in my work, but there are no yellow exclamation marks in device manager, hence I do... Answer:Ultrabase for X201 compatible with X230?

Ultrabase X200 is only compatible with X200/t/s/i and X201/t/s/i. The new Ultrabase Series 3 is compatible with X220/t/i and X230/t/iSo the answer to your question is no, your Ultrabase X200 used with your X201 is not compatible with X220 or X230.

Hi, when I connect headphones to jack on laptop's body speakers are turned off and sound goes into headphones (and Windows (8 RTM) detects that correctly). But when I connect headphones into jack on ultrabase, speakers are turned off, but nothing goes out of headphones (nor Windows seems to detect the change). Any idea what to look for?

As it turned out, by default when you dock laptop to ultrabase it drives sound to DisplayPort. Without installing Lenovo drivers for graphic card and sound card you can't change it to put sound into jack on ultrabase.

I have a simple question, but the answer is not obvious (to me anyway) from checking the Lenovo product detail pages. Can I run 2 external monitors using the Ultrabase 3 with the X230 docked and the lid closed, so not using the built-in X230 display at all? And if so, what mixes are allowed between VGA and DVI? The product feature page for Ultrabase says it has both VGA and Display Port outputs.  It doesn't say whether both can be used at once.  And the link to the supported monitor configurations from that page just goes to a general page with a ton of info on docking solutions, but nothing on that page gets you to a list of monitor configurations.  Duh. Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Mulitple monitors on Ultrabase 3 with X230

Yes, and any mix is allowed for running 2 external LCD.

I have an X230 running Windows 8 and an Ultrabase 3 with DVD writer.  Windows is fully patched by System Update and Windows update.  I have two issues: 1. When docked, I just get the ThinkPad logo onscreen, the laptop will not continue booting until it is undocked.2. When Booted, the keyboard and mouse plugged into the dock don't work until the laptop is undocked then docked again. Both these are intermittent and I haven't established the pattern yet so I can't reproduce them on demand. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've had similar issues. But have found that if I remove the DVD drive from the Ultrabase 3 everything works as it should.

I bought an Ultrabase Series 3 for my x230 which runs windows 10. The optical drive works, the audio works, I have not tested the HDMI, but the USB ports do not work at all. I assume the problem is that I need drivers for the USB 3.0 slots. I have been all over the Lenovo support site, but find nothing. Either I missed it, or Lenovo has decided not to support them,  Perhaps somebody else has had this problem and has solved it? I did find drivers listed for download at an alternate site, but my AV software indicated that there is a virus in the download.

Just a warning to x230 tablet owners considering the ThinkPad Ultrabase Series 3 (0A33932). The displayport on the ultrabase seems to be less capable than the displayport on the x230 itself. 1. The Ultrabase displayport does NOT support YCbCr coding, the x230 displayport does. 2. The Ultrabase displayport does NOT support audio output, the x230 displayport supports full 7.1 channel sound. This is at least the case under windows 8 x64 and using startech DP2HDMI2 displayport to hdmi adapter. If there is a way to get YCbCr or sound out of the ultrabase displayport I have not found it. Is it possible the ultrabase port is not a DP++ port? The port on the x230 is definately DP++

Hi. I'm posting this here as the ultrabase is meant only for the x series. I'm thinking of grabbing the ultrabase together with the x230, as it would be much cheaper this way.I will probably use it 80% of the time in the office, 8-10 hrs a day, 5-6 days a week. Would love the output to a big monitor, ext keyboard. The ultrabase dock seems to be a nice solution. But I'm also very extremely **bleep** about heat... especially with my long-usage patterns. Are there enough clearance between the x230 and the ultrabase for air to flow sufficiently? I am also considering using the USB 3.0 Dock (part no. 0A33970)http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?...for connection instead, and have a good cooling pad below the x230. Any thoughts or suggestions? Much appreciated thanks

Answer:X230 and the ultrabase (Series 3): Enough clearance below for ventilation?

Hey Jame5,

I have a X230 with thinkpad ultrabase series 3 here at work and was wondering what I could do to provide any information that would help you make a more informed decision. I would be more then happy to run any test you want or heating tests that could help you out. I love this X230 and the docks is great, yet the clearance is not enough to say see the light from one side from the other or really provide any really lanes for air flow. I have had no heat issues but like I said I can run heat monitor to tell you readings if you want over a period of time.

The optical drive in my ultrabase is not visible in BIOS or Windows.  It has worked fine in the past, although I do not use it very often.  BIOS boot menu is not showing the optical drive.  Pushing physical eject button on the drive does nothing.  It is as if the drive is not getting power.  I was able to fit the "slim" DVD multi drive in my T430 and it works fine.  So the issue is definitely in the ultrabase. Any thoughts on further diagnostics or power settings I have somehow missed or messed up causing the base to not see the DVD drive? Thank you.

Hi there, I am trying to figure out if ulatrabase 3 is good enough to have X230 running two external monitors without shutting down its own screen. I know I can use the VGA and miniDP on X230 to output onto two external monitors, but that way, X230's own screen wouldn't work. I dont know if an ultrabse 3 can do the trick. The lenovo salesman on the phone said that I can connect two external monitors with the X230 screen on if both external signal output are of the same type. ie, use both VGA ports on X230 and Ultrabase, or both DP(miniDP) on X230 and Ultrabse. But If mixed using VGA and DP ports , then the X230 screen need to be off. Is that correct? I have seen people talking about 2 external monitors with X230, but is there anyone succeed with 2 external + internal LCD? if so, how?

Answer:Ultrabase 3 with X230, 2 external and 1 internal monitors

i haven't tried this myself. But if you use both the DP on the Ultrabase, and the miniDP on the laptop itself, this should allow the internal screen to work. If you really need 2 external + 1 internal, get the series 3 plus dock with 2 x DP + 2 x DVI-D.

I am having a strange issue with my X230 when docked in the UltraBase 3.  This seems to have started in the last month  so I suspect either recent BIOS or driver issue. Displayport video output sometimes fails to go to my external montior (Samsung S22A460 via Displayport to DVI adapter) If I turn on the X230 and immediately log on, the external monitor works great.  But if I turn on the machine, walk away for a few minutes and then come back to actually Ctrl-Alt-Del and log on, the external monitor gets no signals. I can log on to the X230 and it works fine with its own display.  Undocking and re-docking does not start the external monitor.  Restarting the X230 in the dock does not fix it.  Full shut down  followed by power up will get the X230 to detect the external monitor again. If the machine + monitor combo starts and works it keeps working.  The machine can go to power save mode and dim or turn off the monitors.  Both the internal and external will come back on after waking the machine. If the external monitor fails to get output at first startup, the only way to get it working is full shutdown and power up.

I have no clue what happened but I have 2 office setups with docking stations, same hardware. Lenovo X230 Laptop (integrated graphics)Ultrabase Series 3 Docking Station (1 VGA, 1 Displayport) The difference though is at the office I have a DisplayPort monitor connected directly ot the dock and a VGA Monitor. At Home, I have a VGA monitor and Displayport to HDMI Adapter connected to the dock. Both were working at one point. All of a sudden, nothing plugged in the Displayport is being recognized by Windows in both office setups. I cannot even choose the monitor, and the monitor says no signal is coming. I need to get this fixed. The only monitor that always works is the laptop monitor and VGA, nothing pluggin in displayport is generating a signal in both setups listed above. Any ideas?

Answer:X230 with Ultrabase Series Base 3 - Dual Monitor Problems

Hi, sprasad03

There are a few software and driver updates available for your machine (found here), but I think your issue is hardware-related. It could either be that the DisplayPort port on the machine is no longer working, or it could be that the DisplayPort to HDMI adapter has died. If possible, I would test both components on their own and see if either of them fail.

Hope it helps,
Adam

the Ultrabase X200 is not compatible with the X220. The X220 requires Ultrabase 3 or Mini dock 3. If you only use these connections then get the Thinkpad Port Replicator 3, they are fairly cheap.

So I'm considering buying an Ultrabase docking station for my X201. Lenovo offers three different kinds of DVD burners for the Ultrabase. I don't see any real differences amongst them. Can anyone chime in? Also, Lenovo's DisplayPort to DVI-D is $25, monoprice has an adapter for $10. Monoprice states that their adapter is passive, and requires the DisplayPort port to be capable of delivering DVI signals. Is this the case with the Ultrabase or do I have to buy Lenovo's adapter? Thanks.

I am using Dragon NaturallySpeaking voice recognition software. The proper microphone and connection are extremely important for accuracy. I've just learned that the port that a microphone is plugged into his very important. It is strongly suggested that microphones not be plugged into a USB hub, and the very best to be plugged into is actually USB port number one. How do I find out which physical USB port is connected to what port number?  And my question is not only on the X61 tablet, but also the ultrabase unit that I'm docked into. Thanks, in advance, for your assistance.

Answer:How do I know the USB port number on tablet and ultrabase?

ultrabase's usb are actually expansion usb or usb hub if you like to it, so it won't be port number one. The usb ports on the laptop are directly connected to the motherboard, so for all intents and purpose are all primary usb ports.

Hello,I am new to the Thinkpad Tablet community, so please bear with what may be a simple question. When I connect the tablet to the Ultrabase, the battery on the tablet continues to run down (despite having plugged the AC power into the base.) I had assumed that the base would somehow communicate with the tablet and charge the battery (or at least provide power so it did't continue to wear down.) Thanks for any guidance.

Answer:Ultrabase/tablet power situation

You are correct in that the Ultrabase should charge the tablet.   I would troubleshoot by first checking to see if you have a proper power source into the Ultrabase.   Open up the tablet and look for the green light that lights up when the tablet is connected to a power source, if it never lights up when in the Ultrabase then you may have a power source issue due to one of several reasons: Be sure you have a proper electrical connection, works for other devices (such as a light) for that same plug or power strip. Be sure the tablet is properly seated on the Ultrabase and completed flush with the surface.   You should hear a click when the connector on the Ultrabase connects with the connector on the bottom of your tablet.   Be sure your Ultrabase AC adapter and cable work properly by borrowing another one from the same type of Ultrabase if available.  Also might be helpful to test your tablet on another Ultrabase if available.   Sometimes the Lenovo authorized service centers will let you test out components, if you have a ticket from the Lenovo help desk (my first contact point for some issues.) Message Edited by ctoys on 07-02-2008 12:18 PM

I have a X6 Ultrabase for ThinkPad X61 Laptop.I want to use a ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter Part No. 40Y8725 for a second hard drive. But I learnt now Lenovo has ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III Part No. 43N3412, which is compatible with ThinkPad X200 Ultrabase (43R8781)Can I use Hard drive bay adapter III Part No. 43N3412 in X6 Ultrabase instead of hard drive bay adapter Part No. 40Y8725?My question is: Does Part No. 43N3412 fit in ThinkPad X6 Ultrabase used in conjunction with X61 Laptop.Pls. clarify as I am planning to buy one to add on a HDD on the Ultrabase.

Answer:Compatibility of Hard Drive Bay Adapter 43N3412 in X6 Ultrabase

the ultrabay in x61 uses a pata final connection. while the x200 uses a serial ata final connection. So they are physically incompatible.

I am running Windows XP on the X61 Tablet with Ultrabase.  In my classroom, I routinely am connected to a TV set as my secondary display in extended desktop mode, with the TV display rotated 180 degrees so that I can view the tablet (docked) and the students see a different view via the TV.   When I attempt to change to notebook + monitor clone instead of extended desktop for those rare occasions where we need to view the same thing at the same time, I get the BSOD.  In fact, I cannot change ANY display settings (other than my wallpaper) while docked.  Of course, I don't have the option to alter the TV's settings when undocked because the system doesn't recognize a secondary display. Occasionally, I also get BSOD when docking/undocking regardless of the procedure followed, but this seems to be a "hit and miss" problem. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I'm having some frustrating issues with my new X200 tablet.  I'm running Vista64 on a 7448-CTO model. The computer hangs on resume from sleep or hibernate while installed on the ultrabase. I've installed the most recent drivers for every piece of hardware in my X200.  If any of you have some knowledge about this issue and how to fix it, I'd be much obliged. Thanks! --special thanks to the X61 folks who solved the beam forming issue for meMessage Edited by solzont on 07-28-2009 09:59 AMMessage Edited by solzont on 07-28-2009 10:29 AM

Hi, I just got my ultrabase today so I plugged it in right away.  Just now I noticed that the fan on the computer has been all the time and pushing hot air out of the vents.... it never used to do that before without the dock and I'm kinda worried about the ventilation on this thing... Is this something I should be concerned about?  edit:  i just ran CPUID HW with my power setting on high performance with my external monitor and tablet monitor on and with 2 videos running ... WMP had a dvd quality movie playing and itunes was running with a another video... + onenote and firefox running (for about 15 minutes) and my max temperature was 78 celsius ... is this too hot?

Answer:x200 ultrabase: heat/ventilation problem with my x201 tablet?

notebooks do tend to run a little hotter when they're on a base.  your temps while running all that stuff is bordering on being a little hot.  you might want to make sure your vents are clear and free from dust. blow them out with a can of air.  i have to blow mine out about once a month, they just attract dust.

When booting up my X200 tablet on an ultrabase docking station, I get a blinking cursor in the top left of my screen for about a minute before the Thinkpad flash screen is displayed. The tablet then boots normally .  When I boot up my X200 tablet undocked, the flash screen comes up straight away with no delay.  I've checked the boot order to make sure that the HDD is the primary device. My tablet is flashed to the latest BIOS (3.11).  Grateful for any ideas or suggestions.

hey ericdierks, curious to know, if you dock the unit before switching it on .. does the same issue occur ? and is your unit's BIOS at version : 3.19 ? if not, could you update it and while doing that; drop by http://support.lenovo.com and cross-check with the drivers here and with your unit and update any/all driver/software.

I seem to be getting random stop errors whenever I attach the Ultrabase 3 to my new X220 Tablet.  On several occasions I have also experienced the Optical Drive hanging or loosing connection. W hen I do not have the Ultrabase attached I have not experienced these problems, even when I attach a USB external optical drive.  X220 is a model 4296 37U with 8 Gb ram and I have upgraded the 320 Mb hard drive to a Intel 320 series 600 Gb SSD.  Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem with the Ultrabase with their laptops?

Apologies if this is reprising and earlier question on this topic. I have recently acquired an old-ish second-hand ThinkPad X230 [2325SWK build with a G2ET91WW (2.51) BIOS], accompanied by a ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 docking station [P/N 0B67692] which has an empty 2" bay.I need advice on the following issues:1    The X230 currently has an SSD installed [Samsung 128GB MZ7TD128HAFV-000L1] which will not be large enough for the programs and program data that I have planned to install.  I would like to upgrade to a 1 1TB SSD, and I propose to clone the contents of the existing 128 GB drive to a 1 TB Samsung 850 Evo [MZ-75E1T0B].  Are there any SATA or other firmware issues that I should be aware of before acquiring the 1 TB drive, arranging for its cloning and for the replacement of the current 128 GB drive?2    I would like to populate the empty 2" bay on the UltraBase Series 3 docking station with an HDD, and the model I have in mind is a 2 TB Seagate BarraCuda Hard Drive [ST2000LM015].  Again, I'd like to know if there are any hardware, firmware or other issues before acquisition and installation.I'd be grateful for any help on either of these two issues in an Australian context.

I just got my ultrabase a couple days ago and this happened twice today.  I came back from class and docked the laptop while it was asleep.  I resumed the laptop using the power button on the ultrabase and I could see the login screen but it was flickering very badly.  So I opened the laptop (which stopped the flickering) and logged in.  Once logged in, I closed the lid, but the screen flickered even worse and I was only able to see the top 5% of my desktop.  When I opened the lid, the flickering stopped. Does anyone know what's causing this?  Are there drivers I need for the ultrabase?

In the Windows METRO mode, the touch keyboard will automatically come out when the focus is in a text field. In the Windows desktop mode, one way to get the Touch keyboard is:Click the key combination: Windows + C to bring up the Charm.Click the Settings.Click Keyboard and select the Touch Keyboard. Unfortunately, it seems that it does not remember the selection so the next time you click on a text field, you have to go through the process again. I hope MS will change this. Even better is if the X230T is in a tablet mode (meaning the screen is lay flat and on top of keyboard, it will be smart enough to use Touch Keyboard by default. Edit: Another way to display the Touch Keyboard is to click the Touch Keyboard icon at the task bar.

I just received my second non-tablet X230 after my first one didn't work out. The new one has Windows 8 Pro loaded on it and I noticed that many of the programs were optimized for a touch screen by default, I also had the touch keyboard button on the taskbar. This is not a huge deal, but does anyone know if there is a way to remove "Pen and Touch" support or fix this error. I imagine that they loaded the x230 tablet image onto my x230 by mistake. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.   Thanks!

Question: X230 Tablet newbie

Hi all,

I've recently bought a Lenovo X230 Tablet. Specificly a 3434-CTR.

Now, as far as I know, a X230 tablet should have a multitouch screen and pressure sensitive built in Wacom tablet.

I just got this machine and it has a pre-installed copy of Windows 7 64bit Professional on it so I would gather that it has all necesery drivers already installed.

Problem is, the touch screen simply doesn't work - it doesn't respond to my fingers at all. It does work with the stylus pen, though. But it doesn't support pressure sensitivity. I tried using a portable drawing program that has never failed to work with any pressure sensitive pen tablet but it simply didn't work.

I'm guessing that there are some drivers I should install, but I don't know what to look for.

Is it possible that a 3434-CTR doesn't have a multitouch screen nor a pressure sensitive pen tablet?

Welcome to the community.

You may wish to visit the Parts Lookup page. Fill in your S/N and machine type (3434) and it should return a list of parts that went into your build. Either post the whole list back here, or, if it's obvious, post the P/Ns for the LCD panel and we can try to assist further.

Is there a way to specify different actions for the pen buttons?  For example, when using one specific program, I'd like the side button to function as if it were the shift key instead of the right-click but then have it operate as the standard right-click when in Windows or other programs. Is this a native functionality or is there a third-party program available that could give me such options?

Answer:X230 Tablet Pen Options

aardvarky, This is an excellent question! I definitely understand your wants! Officially, it needs to be a setting inside the software you want to use the digitizer pen in.

Examples:

With the new TBT2 there is a software called QuickSnip, insdie the QuickSnip settings you can change the digitizer pen button from right click to screen capture.

Inside OneNote you can change the settings of the Pen Buttons, here is a link to a X230T Digitizer Pen Input Youtube video that may have more clairification.

So, as Digitizer Pen Technology becomes more popular, I believe we will begin seeing more Applications and Software adding the technology to enhance their user customizations.

Answer:x230 Tablet "Black Button"

I have not discovered a way revamp the Black Button without changing the registry, However, this may be a good alternative for you to create your own hard shortcuts in Windows 8:

Use the [Win-Logo]+[D] to see the Windows-8 desktop.
Right click on the Windows-8 desktop and select New, Shortcut.
Then in the called input box simply enter the appropriate shortcut text.
(found under the properties of the desired program)
Once a desktop shortcut is made, right click the shortcut, press properties and shortcut key replace none with the key or key combination you would like to use.

Then Pin the Desktop Shortcut to Start (Menu). To do this right click on the desktop shortcut and select "Pin to Start"

I also thought I would share the official Windows 8 shortcuts with you.

Applies to being unplugged and plugged in. It's not due to have power consumption, usually just shuts off from within minutes of logging into my account. Safe mode seems to delay this problem for a while. Best way to go about fixing this? Malwarebytes doesnt detect any viruses.

Hello, I started a new post because this is a different Error. After I updated my x230t using the recommeneded updates from the website, my keyboard suddenly stopped working. I tried re-installing windows but the error remained. I eventually found the issue being that when I start up the PC, the Fn key is stuck as if its still pressed, even when its not (the key itself isnt stuck). To solve this, I went into Bios and swapped the Fn key with left Ctrl, and now whenever I boot up the PC I plug in an external keyboard and press left Ctrl, this "unsticks" the left Ctrl key (which is physically the Fn key after I swapped them)  and lets me use the computer normally. What could have caused it? is it unrelated to windows seeing as it happened after I clean installed? how do I go about fixing it? and can I contact an offical Lenovo support somewhere online?

(if only portion of page is displayed) Can you have a pdf doc opened on half of display, while taking notes with digy pen on other half of the display? Can the digypen be used with word and excel?thanks, and have a great day

1. the measurement you have is with the 3 cells battery fitted, it is not the measurement for the X230 with 6 cells battery fitted. The 6 cells battery will add another 1 inch to the measurement of 9 inch. 2. Yes, you can zoom by pinch. The movement of page with one finger depends on type of pdf software you use. 3. Yes you can write on the screen whilst having a pdf doc opened on half of the screen. 4. I have thinkpad x230 tablet, and I have mixed feeling about it. It is a quite powerful one, does most of the job but have too many design flaws - broken rubber latch after a while and rubber buffers in the bottom etc.,  I hate the new gen x240 laptop, especially the X series convertible laptop is discontinued. Stupid, in my opinion, yoga design. I, no way, want to flip the keyboard to any surface. Especially on a field trip. X240 discontinues Express Card slot, no thunderbolt, no digitizer. The removal of trackpoint 3 click buttons, which were combined with the trackpad. People complain a lot when they accidentally click the trackpad while typing. Hello all,I have 230X tablet and I upgraded it to windows 8.Since the upgrade, I feel that the power manager shows wrong time remaining, and every time I try to configure something with the power manager dashboard it crushes as "not responding".I read that the battery should last for 7+ hours, but after a full charge it shows only 3+ I also installed the latest driver from Lenovo's website and it didn't help. Does it sounds familiar? Does anyone has a solution? Thanks!

Answer:Power manager X230 Tablet

Hi, As far as I know, Lenovo has not supported Power Management for Windows 8 yet. What you said happends to me too. The time remaining is not accurate. Sometimes it drops from 25% to 10%, and the computer goes to sleeps after a few seconds... But after I reset my battery gauge, it solves the problem. By somehow, I discover that Power Management does work in Guest Account. You should perform Battery Gauge Reset in your Guest Account. Here is what I do: You should activate your Guest account (When you hit Windows key, type Accounts, Users accounts (in setting) -> Manage other Account -> Turn on GUEST account. You run battery reset there. (it takes long time since the computer will fully charge your battery and then completely discard and then chage again). Unfortunately, you cannot switch account during you perform battery reset and you cannot turn off computer during that time. It takes about ...12h to perform the task. But it works for me. The drawback of Guest account is you cannot connect to internet. I hope that LENOVO would support Power Management soon!. Too bad for a business laptop .

Hey guys, I'm new on this forum and I'm also new in using X230 tablet or any 2-in-1 laptop. This is my second ThinkPad but first convertible laptop. About problems. Shortly after I've got this ThinkPad I've installed Windows 10 because in my opinnion it works better and IS better than Win7. But after installation, I've encountered a few problems.First problem was no auto rotation - I could do that only by installing drivers for Tablet Buttons (it didn't bother me that much as next few problems).Second problem was not working Dolby Profile - anyone has suggestions why? I've read that eccp4.exe or something like that is not supported in Win10. The only thing with Dolby that did work was Dolby Digital Plus (and the equalizer there is horrible!).And third, and also MAIN problem was random screen touches. Did anyone encountered this kind of problem on yours X230 tablet? It happened only when I was fully in "tablet mode". Like for example I was doing some notes on classes and A LOT of times Action Center came up. With no touch from my side - I was only writing notes or not even touching the screen. But my second thought was to go back to Win7 from recovery (which didn't work with F8, I've used SWM/WIM tutorial to fully recover system). And finally it seems that this problem doesn't occur on Win7. Once you download all your drivers your X230T will run much more normaly. keep in mind however if you have the touch screen model it only supports 2 finger touch while winows 10 supports 10, it still works but many of the gestures don't you can chage your screen if your so inclined as far as i know there is no driver update. Good luck

I used the X230 Thinkpad Tablet in tablet mode and when I went back to use it as a laptop, the touchpad no longer works.  I can use the keyboard and use the touchscreen but not the touchpad.  When I go into the control panel for Windows 7 and the mouse settings, the touchpad options to activate are not available. The touchpad mouse works before I log into the machine, but when my desktop shows and I try to use the various programs, the touchpad is not activated. How do I get the touchpad to work again?

I have a Thinkpad X230 Tablet.  The trackpoint and touchpad have stopped working.  This just happened today, after about six months of use.  When I boot the machine, I can move the mouse cursor for a few seconds, but then it stops.  I don't see any error messages.  The Ultranav panel in the mouse control panel applet shows the controls for both trackpoint and touchpad greyed out--they can't be clicked on, and the "enabled" boxes are not checked.  The device manager says that the device is working.  If I try to update the driver, I'm told it is up to date.  If I uninstall the driver and reboot, the trackball and touchpad work, but they seem to be using generic drivers--the ultranav panel does not show in the mouse applet.  I'm told to reboot to complete installation.  However, if I do that, I'm back to square one, with the ultranav not working.  I checked the boot configuration, and it shows both the trackpoint and touchpad as enabled.

If that doesn't work then I would assume it's a hardware problem.

My X230 Tablet laptop hangs after booting or reawakening from stand-by. It happens every single time. It lasts for about 2-3 minutes, during which the cursor can be moved but nothing responds. The hard-drive status indicator is constantly on. After 2 or 3 minutes the laptop becomes responsive again and the problem doesn't return until I reboot. Sometimes the problem occurs immediately after booting, sometimes a few minutes later. I've had the problem since I got the laptop.

Answer:X230 Tablet hangs after booting

It still happens after a diagnostic boot, with all services stopped.

I recently purchased a X230 type 3434-CTO Tablet (the one with gorilla glass). The first night I had it it worked great and I was incredibly happy with my purchase. At the end of the night I began installing an update for windows and let it run overnight. The next day I encountered severe problems with the touch screen. Pen input will not function at all in tablet mode and intermitently in laptop mode. I began with restoring windows to before I updated, then reinstalled windows and all drivers ect. Nothing has worked so far. I brought it to the IT department at my school and they tried using older drivers ect, nothing has worked so far. I am increidbly frustrated, has anyone else encountered this  or a similar issue? Thank you for your time and thought

Answer:X230 Tablet input not working

welcome to the community. sorry you're having troubles.have you tried to recover the system to factory-delivered state via the on-disk recovery process? or did you make the factory recovery dvd set, which you could use with an external dvd drive? please post back more specifics about what condition your machine is in. ie, data and docs backed up, ready to have a new or factory install done, etc.

Realized I posted this in the wrong place and it really belongs here I decided to look around to make sure my computer was even able to run an external GPU and found I have hit a wall. I flashed my BIOS to the newest version (like 2.67 or something?) but my TOLUD is 3.5 GB (dfa00000). I thought the BIOS update was supposed to fix this? I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

I have a microphone that works only as such, with no speaker and is not a headset.  I am trying to get it to work with my Lenovo x230 Tablet laptop.

When I plug it into the 3.5mm port on the right side next to the Ethernet input nothing happens and it doesn't show up in my windows sound or do anything except change the top left port under "Analog System" from gray to black.  Unfortunately that is the audio port not the microphone port.  This is shown by the next two pictures.Microphone not plugged in:

So something is up...I tried again by going to the "device advanced settings" and changing it from "classic mode" to "Multi-stream mode".This atleast shows in the windows control that there is a "external mic" and a "docking mic".  I have no idea what the docking mic is.  Anyway this picture below is what happens before I plug in the mic:

And now when I plug it in:

As you can see the windows controller is unchanged in the input recording tab but, the realtek program has detected the mic again by turning on the analog headphone button on.  As well as adding an extra tab to the program called "HD Audio 2nd output".  As far as I can tell t thinks my mic is a headset for some reason.  I wish to change this.  When I switch over to the sound tab on the windows program it shows an added headset which is actually it... Hi all, This laptop is giving me nightmares at this point. I can't afford a new one at this moment so i come here for input. The issue I am having right now besides the known audio failure is with the power management, spedificaly the throttling that happens while it is on AC. To me, it seems that the Speedstep roles are reversed. It runs on full turbo speed, over 3ghz on battery but it clocks down to 1198mhz according to CPU-Z when it is plugged in. No combination of settings either in the BIOS, Power manager or the Windows power options have any effect, everything is at 100%. The battery is installed at all time and I have tried both 65 watt and 90 watt AC adapters which are both new. BIOS is updated and I have tried both Win 7 and 10, fully updated with a fresh install with newest drivers and programs and numerous BIOS resets with CMOS battery removed. I am suspecting the power jack at this moment but Power manager reports both AC adapters correctly. I appreciate any response if anybody else has faced this issue or anything like it.

When I updated Windows 10 to the newest Version (Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit, Version 1607 Build 14393.82) the autorotate on my Thinkpad X230 Tablet is not working anymore. Using the rotate button the screen rotation changes but there is no screen change when putting the laptop into tablet mode or when rotating the laptop. With the "old" Windows 10 I had no problems with the autorotate function. I observe the following behaviour/errors:In the action center the button rotation lock is present, but doesn't change / unlock the rotation (it says it changes but the icon always stays on locked and there is no change). In the device manager the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 is listed under "unknown".Under "sensors" there were no entries. I added a Simple Device Orientation Sensor" but it didn't change anything. Other sensors all report the error that the driver cannot be started. A windows lcation provider is not availabe.Using the SensorDiagnosticTablet.diagcab it says that the windows location is turned off and cannot be turned on but in the action center/location the location service is "on".When I open the Lenovo Airbag Protection, the little laptop is moving according to the external inputs, so there is some detection of the motion. In the Tablet Shortcut Menu the button for enable autorotate is on and the laptop was calibrated. I already reinstalled all the drivers from the lenovo site (active protection system, dependencies, settings dependencies, graphics). I purchased a new X230 tablet in August 2013.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit ultimate, Office 2010 Pro, and all updates, Microsoft and Lenovo have been applied.  I have, or at least I believe I have, shut off the option of the screen dimming or the machine sleeping in battery mode and while plugged in.  I've noticed this since I first purchased the unit but haven't used it in tablet mode enough to worry about searching out a solution until now. My problem is when put into tablet mode, typically running OneNote, but I've also seen it occur with just the default windows screen up, after a few minutes of inactivity, the screen goes black and I've not been able to wake it back up and am forced to perform a hard shut down. I sure hope there is an easy fix for this.

Answer:X230 Tablet Black Screen Won't Wake

Oh, and I have the Gorilla glass outdoor screen model and all power management functions in the Bios are shut off. Please help, as right now tablet mode is essentially worthless as the black screen now is appearing right in the middle of writing with the stylus.  After a couple hard shut downs, the Synaptics drivers appear to be blown away and the NavPoint stops working and must have the drivers reinstalled.  Please help.....I'm missing my tablet functionality!!!  Please help.

The reference guide is not very clear.  Is the X230 Tablet compatible with any of the USB 3.0 docking stations: ThinkPad Port Replicator Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433615W)ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 with USB 3.0 (433715U - U.S.)ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 ? 90W (433815U - U.S.)ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 ? 170W (433835U - U.S.)Officially, according to the guide it only shows the ultrabase, however when you search for accessories by selecting the X230 Tablet it brings up others, but not the USB 3.0 series.  The X230 Laptop is compatible. Although it may not be worth the price as it seems to only have 1 USB 3.0 port and the rest are 2.0, price seems to be a $40 premium for the 1 USB 3.0. When it is on the docking station does it lock out the native USB ports in the chassis of the X230T?  An older Toshiba I had reccomended against using the Laptops USB when docked. Thanks

Answer:X230 Tablet Docking Station Compatability

"Officially" X230T does not work with any mini docking station or port replicator. If you still prefer mini docking station than ultrabase, then you can take a look: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/638559-x220-tablet-minidock-series-3-plus.html

Hi everyone, Had some questions on some things. First: The computer was advertised with a backlit keyboard but didn't come with it. How would I add it?Second: The memory usage hovers around 2.2 - 2.5 (8gb ram) - this is much higher than my X61T it replaces. Any way to lower or is this normal?Third: I saw in this review: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CCIQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%...there is an accelerometer which determines orientation - how do I turn this on? Fourth: A lot of this bloatware that lenovo never works properly - for instance when trying to change the % to how long is left, it doesnt work. Also, when trying to show the different power plans, doesnt seem to work as well.  Other than that the computer seems pretty awesome. Can't wait to get it up and running.

Answer:Just got my new X230 Tablet, had some questions on how to work somethings.

1. The backlit keyboard is optional and not available on all models. Try pressing Fn+Spacebar to see if it turns on - once for Low, one more time for high and again to turn off.2. Is this for the same operating system? As far as i know X61T's shipped only with XP Tablet and Vista. Also, the X3100 graphics chip on the X61 uses up to 384MB of shared memory, whereas the new integrated graphics can take up a lot more. It might help to remove all the Lenovo bloatware you don't need.3. You need to make sure you have the Thinkvantage Active Protection installed. After that you can check in the control panel if it's working (Link to image), or download something like QCNLive that shows the accelerometer readings.4. Can't help you here, as i usually uninstall the stuff i don't need. Just stick to the battery info Windows provides.

Hello,First, yes, I realize Windows 8 is not generally available yet, however, a solution may already exist considering the imminent release.I have a X230 Tablet with Windows 8 Enterprise. The 2 USB 3 ports are working, but only at USB 2 speeds (same transfer rates when hooking up a USB 3 device to either of those ports as I get hooking up to the AlwaysOn port on the other side (more or less 25 MB/sec).I never had Windows 7 on this tablet, so I don't have a comparison. However, on a X201 Tablet with a PCIExpress USB 3 add-in card I get transfer speeds of at least 100 MB/sec, which is about as close as you can get I think.Windows 8's (Microsoft's) USB 3 xHCI driver is installed (version 6.2.9200.16420).Are there better drivers available? Am I missing a setting somewhere (in the BIOS perhaps)? Thanks for any assistance,SA.

Answer:X230 Tablet USB 3 performs at USB 2 speeds (Windows 8)

I thought I already had checked the most obvious UEFI settings, but I guess not. In the USB category, there is a USB 3 option which was set to Auto. Based on the description, that looks like a good setting. However, I changed it to enabled, and now I have transferred rates of about 75 MB/sec. Still not as good as possible with some other controllers, but hopefully some better drivers are forthcoming.SA.

I use a X230 Tablet, 3434CTO, with 8 GB of RAM (two 4GB 1600HHz memory sticks, factory installed). My operating system is Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit.  Memory usage is often in the 80%+ range and the machine slows to the point of being functionally useless. I want to move to 12 or, if necessary, 16 GB of RAM. The part recommended by Lenovo is: Lenovo 8GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SODIMM Memory (1600MHz)Part number: 0A65724 Do I have to swap out both 4GB memory sticks or can I swap out just one? Thanks in advance.

you can swap out one or both of the old ram. So 12 gigs of ram is just fine. My X230t was shipped with 2+4 gigs configuration.

Hello,I go the Lenovo X230 Tablet and it came with Windows 7 pre-installed and everything was working great. Then after installing Windows 8 Pro on the Tablet, everything works great except that the pen handwriting software is not there anymore. I can use the pen to move around with no issues. I can open, close and right click with the pen, but cannot use it to write. I installed the needed drivers for the pen and installed ThinkVantage update software from Lenovo support site and ran the update to get the latest drivers and software but no luck. I can calibrate the pen with no issue.Any ideas where I can get the handwriting software for it.?ThanksModerator edit: Added OS to subject.

Answer:X230 Tablet Windows 8 Pen Handwriting software

Hi, hmandi01

In Windows 8, writing-to-text transcription is normally a "keyboard," if you will, that you have to select. When you are on the desktop of your machine, is there a keyboard icon on the taskbar? If this is not visible in laptop mode, then see if it is there in tablet mode. If that icon is visible, click on it. This should bring up the touch keyboard. On this keyboard, the bottom-right key should be another keyboard icon. Select this icon and then select the pen option (third option.) This should change the touch keyboard into a transcription keyboard.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes.
Adam

Hello, I cant seem to find out how to activate the WLAN-Adapter under my freshly Installed Windows 7 x64 Professional on my x230 Tablet. I installed the Lenovo System Update software and downloaded all the drivers it told me that there are. I also tried the WLAN drivers from the support website for my device. I also checked the BIOS settings, where all the I/O Devices are enabled. It still wont show up as an Adapter under Win7.  Intel Management and Security Status Application also says the Link of it is down.I also checked for the killswitch and made sure its disengaged (so the color its showing is green which means on - when I turn this off and on the system also detects the bluetooth adapter coming on). Please help. Greetings, Tom Rieck

I got my X230 Tablet recently and want to run it under Windows 8. After upgrading yesterday, the Touch Screen refuses to work: the position is always in the bottom right corner, but clicking is recognized. The effect is that all windows are closed and opened alternately when touching the screen. Quite annoying, in particular as in Windows 8 the Touch screen would be actually very useful. I updates all drivers and bios, as far as possible, but the Touch Screen behavior remained. Somebody suggested that a clean installation of Windows 8 does lead to a well working Touch Screen. I tried it once, but after about two hours of computer work, Windows came back with the message that the installation failed, and thus I stay with my non working Touch Screen. What do I have to do to get my Touch Screen working again? The Wacom Pen is fine, so I can live with the X230 for the time being, but working with my fingers on the screen would be actually nice - and it beats those iBooks by lengths. Who has ideas?

Answer:Upgrading Video Card in X230 Tablet?

Pardon my ignorance up front if I am wrong, I have an x220 and have not studied the x230 in any depth, but I suspect this isn't even possible, even on the x230.  On the x220, and I suspect it's much the same for the x230, the video card is a part of the intel chipset (it basically leeches cpu and ram power from the normal system cpu/ram and is not a dedicated removable/upgradable mobile graphics device with it's own cpu/ram like a mobile GeForce or mobile Radeon card). Perhaps there are new inventions on the market that can do the trick, I haven't been keeping up, but when I checked for the x220 their wasn't a viable open slot in the system for putting in such a dedicated mobile card.  The only option was an 'external' hack that allows one to use a dedicated desktop GPU card for when they come home with their system and dock it up to an external monitor.  Looked like a bit of work to set-up but once it was set up and running, it would allow for using a powerful GPU for games and graphic apps etc., while at home/office at least. Would be nice if the newest line of these tablet laptops had room for mobile GPU's, it's about the only thing missing for my interests, however that said, the integrated internal graphics work quite well from my experience, for mild gaming with the settings turned down and for graphic editing (most top 2D and 3D applications work surprisingly well, but far from as good as they would work with dedicated gpu, good ...
