x220 tablet: Not booting, just bios screen, than black screen

Question: x220 tablet: Not booting, just bios screen, than black screen

I'm no sure if this is the right section to post in, so sorry if it's not. I have a tablet computer, called an x220 tablet. I was browsing the Internet, and left for a minute, and when I came back the screen was black with a flashing white dash in the top left corner. I've turned it off, taken the battery out, and tried restarting it many times. It will go to the openIng "thinkpad" screen, then back to the black screen with flashin underbar. Please help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: x220 tablet: Not booting, just bios screen, than black screen

The Thinkpad Tablet and the X220t are two different devices. Regarding your problem, I fear that the boot sector is defective. You'll probably have to reinstall Windows.

Ihave owned a Windows 7 X220 Tablet for about 3 years, but never previously ugraded the Lenovo software on it. I saw this was possible, ticked various upgrades and set it off to download and install. On restarting the screen is black - with only a flat white cursor top left. I called Lenovo who said they suspected a bios upgrade had conflicted with something else being installed at the same time (I had ticked multiple upgrades at once), and suggested Ilook and ask for help on the forum. They said they thopught I needed to roll back the bios upgrade but Idon't know how to. I run Trend Micro security suite which was not swithced off when I did the upgrade. Any suggestions at all would be really welcome as the machine is effectively dead and unusable unless I can get it back to the previous set-up. ( Isuspect there are likely to be restore  points but cannot do anything at all at present) Thanks very much    cnwlenovo 15 Feb 2015

Answer:Disaster - X220 tablet - screen black on reboot after installing Lenovo upgrades

Ihave just (after posting this request), and 2 weeks after the failed attempt to get the computer to restart, tried again with the laptop powered onto the mains - it must have completely lost battery power in the meantime, successfully rebooted into Windows, the machine installed Windows upgrqades as it booted, and restarted itself in the process. Iliterally bit my nails as this was going on - and pleased to report the macjine now seems to have opened up OKin windows. Phew!!!      Wonder if the "bad loop"it may have gotten into when Iwas tryoing to reboot several times before - resulting in black screen and white cursor top left - may have died with a complete power down. In any event Iam hugely relieved - so Lenovo upgrades were obviously "self-correcting and troubleshotting after all.... Cnwlenovo 15 February 2015

This just started this morning.  I noticed that if I left a browser window open for a while (particularly with a white background with black text), when I minimize the window, I can see a faint image of it left behind that fairly quickly (at least for now) fades away on it's own.
I turned off the machine, unplugged all the batteries and the power.  Checked and cleaned all the connections and vents.  Then powered it back up on just main battery (has nearly a full charge) played with brightness just a bit.  At first it wasn't repeating the problem but quickly it's showing up again and I am extremely concerned.
I am still under warranty.  Please advise.  Thank you in advance - best regards.

Answer:Lenovo X220 Tablet (screen just startedshowing signs of screen memory burn in...)

Updated Info:  Problem only happens on the edges of the screen, a little less than an inch in from any edge, top/bottom/left/right and the problem may appear, but anything in the middle and it seems fine.
Doesn't happen if my background is set to solid black.  It's slightly noticeable with a mid-grey tone and it's worse still with a mid to dark grey tone that is tinted with a purple-ish hue.
Could some other x220 owners set their bg color to a dark grey purple color, and try to see if it's just a limitation.  I'm trying to determine if my hardware is failing, or if I just stumbled upon something that for most cases and purposes isn't going to be much of a bother.
Other than recently calibrating my touch and pen input, I haven't made any changes to the system.  Today I installed a new intel graphics driver update from Win update but it didn't change anything.
Thank you all very much.

My 4 years old Compaq Presario c700 (C794) laptop is not booting up. Does not go into BIOS, and does not even show the message “Press F10 to enter BIOS” etc.

I see a clear black screen (but has backlit and I am able to adjust the brightness using Fn keys). Tried on the desktop monitor, it is black too.
The HD is running intermittently, all LEDs are on, and the fan is running.
Windows is not booting up, there is no log on sound. WIFI light is also orange, it becomes green after booting is complete. HD activity is on but it is not as much to boot up Windows 7.

Troubleshooting I did till now:

Hard reset by holding down the power button several times.
Cleaned RAM and placed it in another slot.
Removed the power and battery and kept it overnight.
Tried on the desktop monitor, it is black too.

This happened all of a sudden. I did not do any BIOS updates or anything that normally causes these kind of problem. I learned from some forums that an exhausted CMOS battery can cause it. Is it true? In this case, can you please give the location of the CMOS battery in these laptops?
What are the other measures I can take?

Answer:Compaq Laptop: Not booting: Black screen: No BIOS

I doubt it's the CMOS, but if you want to try, there is a service manual here. More likely to be the graphics chip, I would have thought.

I have a Lenovo T530 Laptop with x64 Windows 7. I ran the bios update (g4uj28us), the computer rebooted, and now when it powers up the screen just stays black. The power stays on but it does not boot, also NO BEEPS, and nothing ever comes on the screen.I have tried holding the power button for a minute.Tried unplugging battery and AC.I then detatched the Hard Drive, All Memory, Battery, CMOS Battery, and AC, let it sit over night, and put it back together and it does the same thing. I also put an external monitor on the laptop to make sure the screen is not bad.So it looks like my BIOS is messed up. Any ideas on how I can recover it? I read about using a CD with the BIOS on it but how can I boot to a CD if my screen never comes up? I put the bios bootable CD of the same version in the disc tray but it will not boot to that either, i get nothing on the screen when I power up and no beeps. Help! What should I try?  Thanks!!

Hello everyone,

I have a two-year old Toshiba C850D-10W which came with Win7 Premium. After several months of flashing notices suggesting to upgrade to Win10 I decided to give it a go. I was dumb enough not to check whether my laptop would support such upgrade, and I discovered only too late that it wouldn't on the official website.

What happened is that during the installation process, about halfway through (maybe 43%) I got a message saying that the system would restart many times. The problem is, it never got beyond the stage of restarting, and the system is now in a loop whereby a fixed unblinking underscore appears on the upper left corner and stays there for about five seconds. Then the system restarts and the underscore shows up again, and so on forever, no Toshiba logos, no chance to select Safe Mode, nothing. I can enter the BIOS menu and I've tried to boot the system from the back-up DVDs I made when I bought the computer so I could get back to Windows 7 but it doesn't work, the system just doesn't recognise it. The HDD is fine, I've taken it out and opened it on another computer as if it were an external drive and all the files are still there but I can't do anything else.

Any help would much apprectiated, thanks a lot

I have a friends Asus x54h laptop that is not booting, and it is droving me crazy.

What is happening:
When the power button is pressed the fan turns on and some indicator lights turn on including the hard drive indicator light. Then the disc drive makes a noise and the hard drive indicator light turns off. Here is a picture of the indicator lights:

Nothing ever shows up on the screen.
Sometimes after running 1-5 minutes the laptop will just completely turn off.

What I have tried:
-Booting with just the power cord connected.

-Booting with just the battery connected.

-Taking out the battery and unplugging the power cord and holding the power button for 40 seconds, then plug in and try to boot again.

-Attaching a screen and pushing the keyboard buttons to add an additional screen. Nothing showed up on it.

-Taking it's hard drive and putting it in a good laptop. It booted into Windows and ran without issues.

-Replacing the current stick of ram with a new one from This laptop only has one RAM slot and I don't have any compatible RAM so I had to just buy one. I put it in, and nothing happened differently. Also, if I remove the RAM completely nothing happens differently. This made me think that there might be an issue with the RAM slot. I looked at it, and there seems to be something a little weird about one of the connectors. Here is a picture:

I am not sure, but I thought that this might be causing the RAM to not be detected. I used a ... Read more

A couple of days ago my computer stopped loading windows, when I try to boot from hard drive the computer displays it's normal white on black bios/computer information but when it should be displaying the 'windows loading' logo, the monitor just stays black.

I have tried booting in to safe mode but when safe mode tried to load it gets stuck on C:\windows\system32\config\system so I'm guessing that file is corrupt. After finding out I couldn't boot from hard drive at all, I booted in to my windows cd and thought about reformatting but chose not to since I wanted to back up. I then booted in to 'damn small linux' where I backed up some of the files to my mum's computer, now her computer has died as well, does this mean that it could be a virus?

After backing up what I needed I chose to go back and reformat and now my boot disk won't work either! My windows cd just loads a little then goes black, like the windows installation.

I am pretty much out of ideas except to get a different boot disk and try to install that and hope it doesn't go black.

Do you think it would do me any good to plug my hard drive in to a friends computer and try to reformat it there?

Anyway, I'd be happy to hear any ideas you've got.

Answer:Windows not booting (Black Screen) after displaying bios and computer info

If you think it might be a virus then I wouldn't try it in your friend's. Especially after you think it killed your mother's. Boot from the xp cd and choose the repair option. It goes through your system files and looks for any corrupted or missing files. It will replace them if it finds any.

Hi guys, ThinPad Edge 11 (0328)Fan is permanently running on 100%. After startup/power on and initial bios check , during boot , there is black screen for about 20 secs and then "starting windows" appears. Laptop is not able to go to sleep or shutdown from OS without press/hold of power button. It looks like it went down but only fan is running (redlight is blinking in sleep mode, but fan is still running). Thanks for reply.George

We are having some issues with the pen touch when getting closer to the edge of the screen. The little dot-guide loses accuracy around the edges, making it frustrating to adjust clicks. Another issue is the pen gets shaky when you are closer to the edge of the screen as well. Example - it is impossibleto draw a straight line when you get closer to the screen (OneNote). We had a Toshiba Portege previously and we never had these issues. I apoligize if this is redudndant but i would like a solution. Driver update? Thanks,

Hi all,First post!  My Dad's Lenovo laptop goes to a black screen when starting up, so is unusable.I haven't seen it in the flesh yet but have started to research things for him and have found that 'black screen' shows up quite a lot for Windows 10 and Lenovo PCs! We were so impressed with my Dad's PC I've ended up with the same model myself:Lenovo YOGA 500 Convertible Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 15.6" Touch Screen. Also labelled as: Yoga 500-15IBD Laptop (ideapad)  I see some people mentioning hardware failures and others device driver problems with the graphic card etc. but haven't read a definite cause/fix for this so far. I've just found this recent critical BIOS update for this PC which mentions the black screen problem:Software name: BDCN63WW Version 63[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue. haven't seen this mentioned in the forums? Has anyone else used this?If the PC always boots to a black screen I'll obviously have trouble installing this! I'm hoping that it will boot in Safe Mode or I'm going to have some trouble installing it?! I don't know whether to install the BIOS update on my own machine which is running fine - I think I'll wait until I see my Dad's laptop first which will be in a few weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this BIOS update or other comments on this?Thanks. &nb... Answer:Yoga 500 'BLACK SCREEN' - BIOS update: "[Important updates] Fix Win 10 lid close black screen issue"

I'm still wondering about this... I've just updated the Lenovo Companion after seeing it mentioned in another thread. It looks like this s/w is supposed to scan the PC and recommend Lenovo updates - critical and nice to have ones. Initially the Companion was showing a critical update for Lenovo SHAREit and a recommended one for my BIOS. It says I'm currently on BDCN28WW and offered something like v61 and not the 63 I mentioned in my first post? After letting it update SHAREit and re-scanning the BIOS update is no longer being offered and still shows me on v28 ??? I'm not sure I trust this 'Companion' app!My laptop seems to be running fine so I don't want to break it updating the BIOS if it's not required. For all I know my Dad's broken one may be broken because it upgraded?! Does anyone else use/trust the Companion app?And has anyone else seen it change it's mind on recommended BIOS updates? Thanks.

The screen on my X220 Tablet has been shutting down when I rotate it from tablet to laptop positions when "Auto Rotate is enabaled.. When this happens, the only way I've found to get the screen back is to shut down and reboot.(Note: the backlight stays on, but the screen is blank and unresponsive.)I've found that by resetting the tablet utility options to "ActiveRotate" only ("Auto  Rotate" off) it seems to work.I guess it's not a big deal, but I hate it when things don't work. Any suggestions as to why, or better yet, how to fix?

Answer:X220 Tablet Screen shuts down when rotated

Hi, Jetsyfix
I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but a driver update may help. Here you can find all the possible driver updates for your system. There is a fairly recent BIOS update for your machine that may help, but I would update all drivers as needed and see if it helps.
Best of luck,

I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Hello, I would like to know if the outer clear part that goes on top of the screen is the same on the tablet as on the non tablet, or does the tablet have a different surface because of the pen.  I ask because as this is not supplied with replacement screens and I need this part also as its cracked.  I have seen a whole screen assembly for sale which is off the non tablet version so was hoping this would be suitable, of course I would swap over the wacom digitizer from the rear of the broken screen. Can these be ordered separately? if so is there a part number? Thanks.

Answer:X220 tablet screen outer plexiglass surface

The multitouch version of the tablet is certainly different. The outer "glass" is actually the capacitive discharge digitizer (finger touch). Pen-touch is handled by a different digitized behind the LCD panel

I bought x220 tablet 4 days ago with multitouch (lenovo model number: 4296-2BG). Straight out of the box the touchscreen is not working in approximately 20-25% of the screen surface. The affected area is in one piece on the right-hand side (if looking in regular notebook configuration), however the most of the edges of the screen work. The touch works correctly at other parts of the screen, but on this part there are spots where I never managed to make the touch and there are spots where only sporadically and randomly I can make the touch work. The problem can be repeated no matter if the computer works on battery or on AC, no matters if it is in tablet or in notebook configuration, and no matter what the program you use. It is most clearly seen in Paint - drawing by finger goes well until you get to the part of the screen when abruptly stops and only continues when you get to the healthy part of the screen.  I spent 2 days of trying to get it wok by- calibrating touch screen- turning on and off the touch ability- trying to tweak the touch through built-in properties- installing the newest drivers from lenovo- installing the newest drivers from wacom- cleaning the screen surface with the little cleaning tissue that comes along- turning on and off wifi, bluetooth, camera, and virtually everything I could turn on/off By the way, the system is in the vanilla state - I did not install anything on it (except new drivers for touch). Just made the 'recovery disk'... Read more

Ok, I just got my screen in x220 tablet replaced. When I first usued it, I noticed that the new screen is now "rubbery" - there is no protective foil, but it just feels like there is some plastic cover over the screen, not the actual glass. Previously, the pen used to run smoothly over the screen - just like it does over glass. Now I can tell that the screen is covered in a platci/ rubber transparent layer - invisible but one you can feel by your hand or especially by the stylus. Now I want to ask you for something really silly - can you touch yours x220 tablet screen and tell me whether you feel the rubber coating or a glass? :-) I might be out of my mind, but I swear the feeling was different before. The screen that was replaced comes from the Lenovo service (repair was done under warranty) - maybe I got a screen from a different model (eg. x230?).

Good day. I purchased a manufacturer refurbished ThinkPad X220t  with warranty for one year. The laptop came with a factory seal. When I turn on a notebook,  the operating system(win 7 Prof 64bit) automatically install. At the end of installation in device manager  all devices have been identified and worked fine.  But in computer details in the "system" was written ?No Pen or Touch Input is available for this display?. Then I installed all the drivers on a laptop from Lenovo website again and again. That did not help. Then I reinstalled windows (win 7 Prof 32bit). That did not help. Previously, I had two X200t and when I installed windows 7, the digitizer immediately was detected, for the good work of  the touchscreen it was necessary to install drivers. But the situation with the X220 for me incomprehensible. Explain what I did wrong. The type of ThinkPad printed on the back label is 4294-CTR(in BIOS the type is 4294-CTO).

Hi, I just notice now I have a crack on the screen on my gf's x220t. She and I NEVER droped it, NEVER put pressure on the screen, NEVER put any sort of heavy objects on the laptop.  The crack is small (about 1 cm), very thin, it's hard to see but can be felt very easy when using the digitizer. Her computer also gets alot of thermal sensor failure at the begining of the boot (which can be fix by removing the battery and going into the BIOS). Can I get some help from lenovo STAFF on this. Answer:x220 tablet scratch/crack (about 1 cm, very thin) on the screen

this forum doesn't have a dedicated staff to personally troubleshoot issues.   everyone here (staff included) is here purely on a volunteer basis.   first and foremost this is a peer-to-peer forum.
with that said...
unless you have the gorilla glass model (non-multitouch), your X220T's display is polycarbonate.   based on your video, it looks like it could be a scratch in the writing surface rather than a crack, especially being along the horizontal plane and parallel with the pixel grid.   cracks tend to be more random where scratches happen most often along the X or Y plane.
have you called lenovo support about this or the thermal sensor errors?

Hi everyone, I have a Lenovo X220 Tablet that has touch screen and pen. They suddenly stopped working today. The LCD screen still works pefectly fine, however. The touch screen is enabled on the touch settings. When I try to calibrate, it does not detect my finger or the pen. I also noticed that when I tried to reinstall the driver and it said "a supported tablet was not found on this system". I have the most recent bios. I am running Windows 7 that came with the laptop. All windows updates completed. Is it possible for the digitizer to be defective, but the LCD screen to work perfectly fine?Could it be just a ribbon failure?Which part would need to be replaced, if this is the case? Any advice would be appreciated. Even though it looks like a single device, it is really 3 separate ones.  There is a basic panel.  There is a static discharge digitizer in the front to sense finger touches.  There is a second Wacom digitizer behind the panel to detect the pen.  Any of them can fail.  The wires in the cable can also crack.  Since both digitizers failed, I would first look in device manager to see if there could be a problem with a USB hub.  (digitizers both connect as USB devices.)  My next guess would be the cable.  Sorry I cannot be more definite.

I bought my tablet one months ago. Today, I pick up my tablet with my finger and the front glass cracked on the left side. but I also can draw and use it. Just the front glass was broken. I want to know what to do? Call for lennovo? Cause I am a student, I need my tablet to do some work, I want to know how long and how much to repair it. thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Tablet X220 the upper glass of screen cracked a little

Hi sweetaaronm and welcome to the community,
You're probably going to have to call service to find out how much and how long it will take?  I'd do that anyway, just so you know.  It is going to be expensive.
Is there any computer repair shops locally that you trust?  I'd sit down with the phone book and make some calls.  You're going to have to know which screen you have so you can have them get the right one.
If Lenovo service has the screen in stock, the turnaround for the repair should be pretty fast.

My Dell Inspiron 1100 is over 6 years old at this point, quite the dinosaur. However, I still have a bit of old data I would love to remove before it really bites the dust.

When I boot up the machine, usually the display is clear and bright. However, after no more than a minute the screen goes black and only a faint outline of the desktop remains. What is the problem and what do I need to do to solve it?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1100 screen goes black 30 secs after booting up, faint screen outline

backlights or invertor board is failing (failed).

If there is an external monitor socket on it use a monitor to see the screen and then you can backup your data.

Hi I have searched online but can't find a similar thread. My laptop went blue the other day (as all pcs/laptops seem to do eventually) and I unplugged the power and rebooted. The problem I have had since is that on my laptop, it's just a black screen (no windows logo or anything, or boot screen) until windows loads fully. So my laptop is working - it's just that there's no display until it's loaded. I have my laptop connected to a tv also, as a secondary monitor. On there, the windows logo appears, everything works fine. I can see the boot screen and the windows is loading display. But not on my laptop - just black until windows has loaded. I have windows 7. I restored my system to it's intial state using one key recovery but it has not solved the problem. It is worrying because I'm scared that soon my monitor will not even display anything even when windows has loaded. Any ideas/advice?

But when it is on safe mode i could see my desktop in dark screen(when I use a light).I updated BIOS also using a external monitor. But still the same. I'm completly at a loss. Please anyone help me to slove this problem...

Answer:Lenovo X201 laptop black screen and LCD screen doesn't detect after booting windows

This is then due to inverter from screen that has stopped working, it controls the backlight part of LCD/LED screen when it breaks it cause the backlight to turn off and wont go on so you would need to have inverter re-placed with a new one. Here is a example of how it looks like: it may look diffirent on each model but this is just an example from a T41 from lenovo.

I was previously running Windows 8 Preview and did not have any problems with the touch screen.  I have tried two separate clean installs of Windows 8 Pro, and the only thing that will not work is the touch screen with my finger.  The pen still works, but not the finger touch.  The driver installation for both the pen and the multitouch fails with and error saying "A supported tablet was not found on the system." Help Please.

my F10 is totally stuck and doesn't run anymore. After starting, the display stays black and the fan begins to run wildly, after a while the toshiba sound comes up but nothing else happens. No windows, nothing at all, only the wild running fan of the notebook.

Before this happened I shut down the computer normally. We have about 26 or 27 degrees celsius in our office room today, but I didn't register any overheat in my computer. Something strange: I registered since a few days, that after having started, only the toshiba sound came up but no symbols of toshiba on the screen as usual.

My question is: what can I do?

Answer:Qosmio F10: black screen at booting - No Toshiba screen

The same happened with my F10-36. Monitor shows green vertical lines when I turn it on, later
"Qosmio" words run one moment and screen became black with white points and cursor on the top.
That is all. As I noticed many people complain for such problem. Seems motherbord of this notebook
is not ok originally.

Hi there, I am facing a awkward problem with my X220 (2540M, SSD). Sometimes, most of the time when I play some games (Need for Speed for example), after some time, screen on my laptop goes blank. I have my AC adapter plugged in and battery is fully charged. There is only one more symptom left, the battery indicator on the back side of the lid is flashing orange. The game still runs in the background, I can hear it, but the screen is completely shut off. All I have to do at this stage is close the lid and open it again (I set my Windows to NOT to enter sleep mode, if I close the lid). The battery indicator then begins to light steadily in green colour (like the battery is fully charged) and everything is working fine again, and then, after some time, it happens again. Does anybody know, what might be wrong? Any help would be very appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there Lenovo SMEs! My wife's X220 is having an intermittent problem that recently has become much more frequent. After hitting the power button, the system seems to boot fine (showing the Lenovo & then windows screens)...but then the system will only show a black screen. We used to be able to simply hit the power button to fix the issue, but that workaround is not seeming to work as well. We have tried hitting the ThinkVantage button and running the system diagnostic, but it doesn't find any known issues. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I am having an issue with my Z50 which is running Windows 10.  The screen will suddenly go black while I am working.  Boots up fine. Happens maybe once a week or so.  When it goes black, the num lock and caps lock keys are still lit and I can hear it running, so it's not sleeping.   I can't find anything to bring it back up - moving the mouse or clicking buttons does no good.  Only solution is to hit the power button to put it to sleep, then wake it back up.  Anybody else encounter this?

Hello, It's my first post, so welcome . I've been a lenovo thinkpad user for a month - X220 with SSD, W7 Professional, umts module and extended battery (if more information is needed I can send the full description) - and a strange bug occurs to my new laptop sometimes. After pressing the power button most of controls (camera, speaker mute, microphone mute) always make a flash. Next, most of the times (80-90%) the thinkpad logo shows up and the Windows 7 boots - that's ok. Unfortunately, about one in ten trials end in getting a black screen just after the flashes of the controls. The screen is enabled - it is just black. I must disable laptop (I don't have to keep the power button long - simple pressing is enough), and then, the second trial always succeed. It only occurs during the fresh, full boot - I didn't notice it after restarts, back from sleep or hibernation. I use docking stations, but it occurs in both ways - with or without docking station. It's not a huge problem to ignore that issue, but I'm worried that it may result in a more serious problem in the future. Any ideas and help will be appreciated. --Best regards,Krzysztof

This morning, when I opened my computer, the black is screen and the power light is green. How can I solve this problem? I bought the laptop one month ago from Thanks

Answer:X220 screen is black when it starts

Did you power off the laptop yesterday?
Did you mean, that the laptop seemed to be turned on as you opened it this morning?
You can connect an external monitor to your X220. Maybe the video-out is switched to the external VGA-connector.
Try FnF7 to switch the video-output to the internal display after turning on and delay approx. 3-5 seconds between the FnF7 key-pressings.
Otherwise press and hold down the power-key until the laptop turns off, and start it again.

Hello everyone! I?m falling into a common problem: slow booting. I have tried a lot of ways to fix it and nothing works.
In more detail, problem is my Windows 7 boots slowly, not very, but quite slowly than normal (other computers similar hardware), and the booting usually (I should say almost everytime) has a black screen after Welcome screen. My PC is
Asus K55A (i5 3230, HD  4000). I have run into this kind of problem since I first buy the PC. Reinstalling OS doesn?t help, now I guess, I have reinstalled about 5 times. Hardware problems, don?t say that, continue reading.
Solutions I have tried: remove start-up items, update windows and drivers (actually newest drivers make more slow, so I just use driver from my manufacture, Asus), uninstall programs (yeah, just what isn?t important), defrag the disk (manually
and scheduled), run sfc /scannow (of course it isn?t necessary but I have to do by what people say, this tool doesn?t help when my OS is new and it?s up-to-date, and I use it carefully), and what more?
To investigate the booting more carefully, I installed second Windows 7 on D partition. In second Windows 7, I tried to install everything like first main Win 7 and can you guess, this second one boots faster, smoother and have higher
benchmark score. However, the second Win 7 was installed long time ago (around the time I reinstalled first main Win 7 two times), and just recently, I have time to investigate my two Win 7, so I forget ... Read more

Yesterday updated from Win7Pro to Win10Pro. The x220 does have a standard 320GB HDD and a mSATA 240GB SSD as main drive with now the Win10 installation. I still have the original Win7 on the HDD since I migrated to SSD in the first place. At the end I was presented with a black screen and the Lenovo Center opened. All the tests was passed. I closed it and no desktop was available. A few reboot and the situation is I can login but after that no desktop is shown only a white small rectangle saying "Personalized settings. (Not responding)". Trying to do anything I'm told Windows Explorer is not responding. I can reach the desktop in Safe Mode, opening the Settings I can't access to screens such as Network & Internet or Update & Security (the window is closed), the others are accesible. Wifi also doesn't work only Eth. Any suggestions how to proceed is welcomed, in Safe Mode I can't use Lenovo Update.

I read the posting instructions but it's a little difficult for me to run that program because my computer won't actually display anything. But here's what I can answer:

OS - Win 7 64bit

Original OS - Vista Home Premium October 2010

OS is retail upgrade

Hard Drive has been in use since October 2010, everything else is less than 48 hours old.

I haven't reinstalled the OS

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600k

Videocard - BFG nVidia GeFroce GTX280 1GB

MoBo - ASUS P8 H61-M

PSU - Corsair GS600 600 W (48A on 12v if that's relevant)

Corsair 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (2x4GB)

Don't know about system manufacturer, they're different parts. The Case is by NZXT and the 1.0 TB HDD is by Seagate.

This is going to be a bit of a long read so I'll start off by giving the short version of all this.

Here's the short version:

I built this PC yesterday and it was working but couldn't 't display the native (1920 x 1080) resolution. I got "Out of Range" error on my monitor when I tried to change it to any other resolution. I installed an nVidia control program and made a custom resolution of 1920 x 1080. About half an hour later, I got a blue screen. Now when I start it up I just get a black screen, no error messages, just a black screen. It isn't just my own monitor, I've tried it with another fully functioning one too.
And more detail here:

It was all working alright when I first set it up but I couldn't get native resolution for my LG W2240 monitor (1920 x 1080) which displaye... Read more

Answer:Black screen after Blue Screen, no BIOS, no display

Can you boot into Safe Mode?
Does the system display the Asus splash screen before going to the black screen?

Have you checked to see if the video card has power (the extra power plugs in most cards these days)? Have you checked to make sure the fan is working, and that the video cooler isn't clogged up?

Have you tried another video card? I'd suspect that the video card or it's drivers are your issue. If the system boots into Safe Mode, then I'd suspect the drivers, if it doesn't boot into Safe Mode (so you can see the display) - then I'd have to assume that it's the video card.

See if you can return the video card. If not, then see if you can borrow one from another computer - or buy one that you can return if it's not needed.

Good luck!

CPU: Intel Core2 QUAD 9300
Motherboard: AsRock x48 TurboTwins
Ram: DDR2 2x 2GB, 800 GHz, brand Hynix
GPU: ATI HD 5770
PSU: Corsair 650 W
OS: Windows 7
Custom build

I installed Civilization 5 (and directX 9 as well because I was asked to during the installation). After few minutes of being in the game a blue screen popped up (I do not know what message was on there). I restarted the computer and system recommended to run the fix mode. I launched it and after a while I was advised to bring the settings back to the restore point. I acknowledged this but then all I saw was a black screen. Since then, after each restart the screen goes black. If I manage to go to BIOS after 5-10 seconds the screen goes black. I cannot even reinstall Windows.

Those 5-10 seconds in BIOS are enough to check the temperatures on CPU and MB: they are around 30 degrees Celsius so overheating is not the problem. I connected the monitor with my laptop and it works, so monitor is fine. There are no loose connections. There is no dust and debris - this system is 2 months old.

Problem might be in the graphics card. Several weeks ago the screen used to go grey after playing Fallout 3 for 10-15 minutes. I disabled the audio on the card and that solved the problem. However, Windows still indicated that there is something wrong with the GPU; on the other hand, drivers were up-to-date.

Can anyone help please? Or let me know what you think might be wrong.

Answer:The screen goes black after previous blue screen (even in BIOS)

Since you are having a graphics issue in both the BIOS startup screen and while Windows is open, it does sound like a graphics card problem and not a driver problem. Do you have another graphics card to substitute for test purposes?

I can access the toshiba set-up screen but not the safety mode set-up.

Answer:Re: Satellite Pro A200 - Screen goes black after BIOS screen

You wrote that you can access the BIOS but have you checked if the HDD is recognized properly? Maybe the computer cannot boot because HDD isn?t recognized so you should check this.

If the HDD is recognized I would try a recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk. It seems that Windows isn?t able to start and if you reinstall the whole system it should help to get rid of this. Just go in boot menu and select CD/DVD drive as boot device.

Check this!!!

Hey guys. I've had this problem for quite a while now, about a year. However recently it has made the machine unusable. The screen flickers/jumps/skews/malforms etc whenever I try to use it this past week.  In the past year, I have had a problem with the display but only 1 vertical area of the screen would do this and it would mostly just turn solid black. I would fix this by applying some sort of pressure on that area in the bezel right above the keyboard. This let the laptop work for about a year with that problem and I did not need to spend money getting it fixed.  I'm thinking this is a hardware issue with a wire or something getting damaged that connects the motherboard to the display. I have dropped it a few times over the course of 4 years. However, nothing too serious and it is a thinkpad after all.  Anyone know what needs to be fixed/how much it will cost? //EDIT: Screenshots   YouTube Clip

Answer:Black screen after BIOS load screen

If you have any USB devices other than keyboard and mouse, disconnect them, and do a hard shutdown by pressing the power switch down until your computer switches off.

Wait half a minute or so and try booting up again.

If that doesn't work, are you able to boot into Safe Mode?

Failing that you could try a repair install.

I purchased a new X230 tablet in August 2013.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit ultimate, Office 2010 Pro, and all updates, Microsoft and Lenovo have been applied.  I have, or at least I believe I have, shut off the option of the screen dimming or the machine sleeping in battery mode and while plugged in.  I've noticed this since I first purchased the unit but haven't used it in tablet mode enough to worry about searching out a solution until now. My problem is when put into tablet mode, typically running OneNote, but I've also seen it occur with just the default windows screen up, after a few minutes of inactivity, the screen goes black and I've not been able to wake it back up and am forced to perform a hard shut down. I sure hope there is an easy fix for this.

Answer:X230 Tablet Black Screen Won't Wake

Oh, and I have the Gorilla glass outdoor screen model and all power management functions in the Bios are shut off. Please help, as right now tablet mode is essentially worthless as the black screen now is appearing right in the middle of writing with the stylus.  After a couple hard shut downs, the Synaptics drivers appear to be blown away and the NavPoint stops working and must have the drivers reinstalled.  Please help.....I'm missing my tablet functionality!!!  Please help.

Maybe u can tell me which driver im missing. All the best,Nik

Good morning folks, Having had a Lenovo x200 tablet for a while now I've been an avid lurker to this forum but it has been my own personal laptop tradegy (lol) that has spurred me on to registering. My tablet, running Windows 7 has been running fairly well for the time that I've had it. However it now doesn't boot at all. Black screen. Registers battery, AC adaptor, bluetooth and the N light. However I don't hear any beeps, I've tried all of the tricks to reanimate the laptop that Lenovo suggests and have removed the DIMM and the laptop does the neccessary beeps, reinsert the ram and no beeps, no boot.  Is there anything I'm missing? Oh.. Possible major point relating to this: This problem occured within minutes of me downloading and installing the latest multitouch drivers for my laptop and OS from the Lenovo website. Please help, thanks in advance.

Hello,      I'm trying to downgrade my bios to 1.11.   I downloaded the .exe from this link here but everytime I try to flash the BIOS I get this error "Embedded Controller image file does not match this system.  The utility process has not completed." I am using windows 7 pro 64 bit and my tablet type is 4294-CTO.      Reason I am trying to downgrade my BIOS is because I am trying to setup an eGPU setup. Thank you in advance,Jin

Answer:Problem downgrading BIOS to 1.11 with x220 tablet

X220 systems currently come with two EC chipsets: 8DHT (older) and 8ZHT (newer).   your particular X220T has the 8ZHT chipset and therefore cannot use ECPs intended for 8DHT (such as the 1.11/1.03 package).
BIOS 1.16 is the oldest version to natively include an 8ZHT ECP.
you could try combining BIOS 1.11 with ECP 1.09 but i have to add an obvious disclaimer that this is not supported, recommended, or endorsed by lenovo or myself.   if you brick your system while testing, it will not be covered under standard warranty.   (sorry, gotta say it )
while i have tested multiple BIOS/ECP combinations on my personal X220 systems (both with 8DHT EC chips), i've not tested an 8ZHT system to know if it will accept a newer ECP alongside an older BIOS.   of course, this is purely academic.   don't try this at home.

Hi dmorlino. The Acer laptop has an external VGA port you could try checking if a display would appear. Pressing the function key may extend the video output to verify if the chip is still working.

I've posted about this before, and never gotten any farther yet, but as I figured out some new info I'd repost. So I have a brand new, loaded x200 (1.86GHz, 4gb ram, Intel 5300, webcam, fingerprint, card reader, enhanced multitouch (multi-finger)) with windows 7. It's been fast but I'm still having serious issues when it comes to sleep/hibernate. Using windows reliability monitor, about 5 times a day (out of the 10 times I might need to sleep/hibernate) on trying to sleep by closing the lid or using fn+f4, windows will stop responding. Some info I've figured out about this state:The status leds remain active. Pressing buttons occationally will cause hdd activity, using the external wifi switch will still enable and disable the wifi, so windows is still operating.I cannot connect by remote desktop. It connects, lets me log in, but then all I see is a black screen and a spinning blue circle and have to disconnetVery Wierd: Key shortcuts seem to fail BEFORE this is a problem. Windows Key +L, ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+shift+esc all seem to fail. I know when my sleep won't work by testing those first. I tried using microsoft process explorer to kill any active process, and none seemed responsible. So this is likely a driver/service related issue. I've downgraded most of my drivers to the ones in c:\SWTOOLS as recommended by the forums, tried to disable all non-essential hardware, uninstall anything I could. Still stuck and very frustrated after a month. -Matt&nbs... Read more

Hi all,

I have a problem with my Laptop when I restart the OS. It uses Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

The desktop is not appeared, it is fully blank of black, except 'My Documents' of windows explorer.

I found this problem since I had a message from someone (via Yahoo Messenger) that share a link.. I didn't know whether it is a virus or not, but accidentally I opened the URL and extracted the file attached.. Unfortunately, when I restart the Operating System, I got a black screen with a Documents of window explorer..

I have tried the methods that has been posted in this forum with the topic search 'black screen of death', and another additional methods, except re-install OS; but there is no changes till now..

When I tried to create a new user account, it ran normally if using the new account; but when I got back to my infected account it still displayed black screen..

I'm afraid I could not re-install it, because it will need a hard configuration,..

Now, I really confuse what should I do to make it runs well?

My temporary plan is to use another new account and run with it normally, but I wonder with my infected account, what happened with the infected account; Is there any possibility that the infected account will influence my new account or any related system programs?
Is this the only available and safe way to run my OS well?

Please help, and thank you..

Answer:Black screen when booting

You seem fairly certain that it is a malware problem, yet you haven't made any mention of running anti-virus scans, or the state of your security software.

If this is due to malware infecting your computer, then your security software was probably not up-to-date, or effective. At this point, you cannot trust your security software, since it may also be affected by the malware.

What I would do, is take the hard drive out of your computer and connect it up temporarily to a computer that has good and up-to-date security software, to do a thorough scan and repair.

Once your hard drive is clean of infections, then you can address the various problems caused by the malware.

Hello everyone!

This is what happen...

Yesterday I tried to Boot in Safe Mode using the "F8" key and nothing happens, my PC just boots as normal, so I did try again restarting and F8 for Safe Mode, and again, it booted normal. I though it was a f8 key malfunction.
So I had run "msconfig.exe", under "Boot - Boot Options" I check "Safe Boot - Minimal", Apply, then OK and the PC restart to a Black Screen. I did a hard restart 2 times after and it goes to the same black screen.

My question is; is there any way to access the system to roll back the booting config. to the normal boot?

I don't have any install CD from vendor (Dell). My PC has windows 7 ultimate x64.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I have a Samsung laptop. I had Windows 10 for about 2 weeks and everything was fine until last week. When I press the power button, the Windows 10 icon appears with the loading icon. After that, I'm getting a black screen for about 3 minutes then my login screen appears and everything is fine after that.

I thought it may be something corrupted with my OS so I decided to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch and not to keep my files and programs. I found out yesterday that this wasn't the solution to my problem because I reinstalled it and it keeps making it again. Any help ? Thanks!

Hi,Restore your computer when Windows cannot start normally: off the computer and wait at least 5 seconds with the computer in a full off state.Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until you see the Windows loading screen. If a language selection screen opens, select the language you want to use to continue. On the Choose your keyboard layout screen, select the keyboard layout that matches your keyboard type.On the Choose an option screen, click Troubleshoot .On the Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced Options .On the Advanced options screen, click System Restore .Click Windows 10 as the target operating system. The System Restore window opens.Click Next .Click the restore point that you want to use, and then click Next .The Confirm Restore Point window opens.Click Finish to restore your computer to a previous point.Do not interrupt System Restore when it starts. Doing so can corrupt your hard drive and create more problems. Click Yes in the warning that appears.System Restore returns the computer configuration to a previous point in time and restarts.RegardsVisruth

You should NOT play with things you don't understand. You will need to remove the CMOS battery on the motherboard (flat and about the size of a nickel) for 10 minutes or so and then replace it to reset the defaults. Be sure and unplug the computer first.

I have an HP m1170n (Media Center) desktop, running xp sp2 with a 19" LCD monitor. I had previously upgraded my video card to a geo force 7300GS in anticipation of getting a wide-screen 22" LCD monitor, but still have not gotten that monitor. The computer and monitor had been working well, until last weekend, when I turned on the computer, and got the infamous "black screen." At various times in the past week, I got just the black screen or the blue HP screen, before it all froze. One time I was able to turn the caps lock light on and off, but I can't do that now.

To troubleshoot, I first hooked up another monitor, with the same results. I then removed the geo force video card and reinstalled the original video card that came with the computer, also with the same results.

I would appreciate any troubleshooting techniques for this problem. Also, if this is a "deadly" problem, advice on how to recover the data from the hard drive.

HP laptop dv 2000, about 7 yr old. HD = Hitachi speedstar 7200 rpm, about 1 yr old. Win XP pro install is about 1yr old. This laptop gives a black screen on power up. No signs of life at all.

The first problem I noticed was a strange 1" square translucent window around the cursor arrow. Then within 15 min. or so it began giving a black screen for 5 sec. or so and then returning to normal, no error msg. The cursor would freeze and then immediate black screen and back to normal after a few seconds. I restarted, then I had system restore take me back to about 1 week ago and had Microsoft Security Essentials run a full scan, finding nothing. that seemed to help for 15 min. or so and then I started getting the blackouts more frequently, several a minute. Finally black screen only, no boot. Power comes on, some back lights come on, and I think I can see the screen's back light come on, but alas, no one seems to be home. A tech at Fry's pulled the battery, put it back in and tried to boot and told me that given the laptops' age, the motherboard likely died. There have been no drops or traumas recently (or ever, really). I revere my machines like the Dalai Lama, putting fans under them, cleanup, defrag, nothing is too much to ask.

I would be happy to save this laptop long enough to export files and settings, but in the meantime I've moved into data recovery mode. I have pulled the Hard Drive and used another laptop to access it as an external drive. ... Read more

Sorry for butting in here, but I see this a lot at work.
If you can't get to the boot screen by pressing F12 at boot, then IME it's most likely a hard drive problem.
And having the backup show 0 bytes is also a symptom of a hard drive problem (although it can be other things).
The test we do at work is to remove the hard drive and then see if the F12 key combo works.
Be sure to remove the power and battery before opening the case - and to ground yourself before handling the hard drive.
Then connect the power (it's OK to leave the battery out) and see if F12 gets you to the boot selection menu.
If that doesn't work, then the next thing to check is the RAM,
But that's a bit more finicky - as you have only 2 sticks and 2 slots
In that case, you try one stick in each of the slots and then the other stick in each of the 2 slots.
The point here is being sure that you remove power and ground yourself before handling the RAM each and every time.
You're again looking for the ability to get to the boot selection menu using the F12 key
In the event that it's a bad hard drive you'll have to contact Toshiba for a set of recovery disks.  Last I knew they were around $45 (US), but that's a lot cheaper than a new copy of Windows.
Here's a link for that (last updated in 2012):
This is the exact issue I'm facing and I was hoping that it wasn't hardware. I'm afraid it might be though. I'll try to get into my BIOS and see if I... Read more

There are many problems regarding black screen on boot.
I've researched and surfed for over 4 hours, that is not an exaggeration, but found no use.

When the vista passes log-on screen then it is time ti display desktop on boot, there simply shows a black screen with mouse cursor at the center.

Task manager works, and it seems nothing is using huge system resource at that time. After few amount of time, the desktop finally appears.

I never installed driver, but in case one of them got corrupted, I installed the same version again to try to resolve the problem. It was no use.

It's a OEM version that came with my laptop and this laptop has no pirated software. Not a single one.

Why is this happening?

Hi all,

Yesterday I was on my computer and I was doing nothing at all, hadn't made any recent changes to it and the screen suddenly went black, while the monitor light remained blue which is it's standard color when it's connected to the PC, turned on any working well. It suddenly started to smell like something was burning, bad.

So I immediately shut down the computer while holding the power button down for 5 sec. as I couldn't see anyhting on the screen.

I opened up my computer and I didn't see anyhting burning but it was smelling pretty bad and I think it was because of all of the dust, there was tons of it, literally.

So after I thoroughly cleaned it out I turned on my computer, the screen turned on fine but I still couldn't see anyhting, not even the boot sequence. I entered Windows normally as I heard the sound when it logs into Windows, but still nothing on the screen.

I then decided to take out my graphics card and put the onboard graphics chip into use. But I couldn'T even get into the BIOS as I didn'T see anyhting.

After some testing I became aware that after I unplugged my VGA cable and replugged it back in (into the VGA port of the onboard GPU) the picture came back on for 2 seconds and then disappeared. So I went into the BIOS and after a couple of minues of plugging and unplugging the VGA cable I managed to put the onboard GPU as default and saved and exited the BIOS.
