X201 Tablet will not lock, restart, shutdown, sleep, or display UAC/consent UI after plugging in USB

Question: X201 Tablet will not lock, restart, shutdown, sleep, or display UAC/consent UI after plugging in USB

I have an X201 Tablet (3113-W4M) that came preloaded with Windows XP SP3. I blew away the XP image and reloaded with Windows 7 Enterprise and obtained all Windows 7 drivers from the Lenovo website. The issue is that after the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernate *and* I plug in a USB mouse or USB mouse/keyboard combo, I am unable to lock, shutdown, restart, or hibernate the system. Additionally, anything that invokes UAC fails to display. If I look at Processes under Task Manager, I see where consent.exe is running (called when a UAC approval prompt should be displayed). Sometimes it is running multiple times corresponding to multiple events that should have displayed the prompt (e.g. running RegEdit). Turning off UAC is a workaround to this issue but does not address the root cause and does not address the lock/shutdown/etc. issue. After extensive troubleshooting that included 2 full OS reloads, process monitoring, and deep log reviews, I have narrowed my issue to the following steps: 1) Boot tablet with no USB mouse and/or keyboard attached2) Attach USB mouse and/or keyboard>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both function as expected.3) Hibernate tablet (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)4) Resume from hibernate (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both fail I discovered this as I move my system from work (Logitech S510 keyboard/mouse combo) to home (Logitech LX 310 mouse). I have all current Windows 7 updates and I have installed the latest Setpoint from Logitech. The issue occurred before and after the SetPoint software was installed. Oddly, I can restart the system via command line using "shutdown -r" but it takes 4 to 5 minutes as opposed to less than a minute when this is is not occurring. Thanks in advance to the community. Joel

Preferred Solution: X201 Tablet will not lock, restart, shutdown, sleep, or display UAC/consent UI after plugging in USB

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,Over the past few months I've been using an X200 Tablet with Windows 7.  Since I've had it I've noticed problems with it not 'sleeping' properly and the ability to Lock, Restart or Shutdown the computer going missing. I?ve done some troubleshooting and narrowed down a scenario where I can repeat the problem 100% of the time.  -       Setup computer with USB device (a keyboard and mouse will do)-       Boot and logon-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Sleep the computer-       Wake the computer-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Unplug any of the USB devices At this point the computer can?t be locked, and if you send it to sleep it will essentially crash meaning you have to do a hard shutdown (or as has happened a few times, wait for the battery to run out in your laptop bag...).  I?ve tried different USB ports on the computer and different mice.  I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers, I've even rebuilt it from the Windows DVD.  Is something anyone else has experianced?  If you have a X200 tablet does the same thing happen to you? T

Answer:Help - Repeatable X200T USB, Sleep and Lock/Restart/Shutdown crashes

Out of the blue, I happened to install this Microsoft hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976755), and today was the first day that, upon docking, I was able to lock my laptop, and I assume it will go to sleep at the end of the day when I take it home. In checking this forum, I see that this fix was suggested here some time ago:http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/X200-Tablet-Win7-Black-screen-freeze-on-... Hope this helps.

Hi Whenever I unlock my computer, or wake it from sleep/hibernation, I am unable to log in with the fingerprint reader. I get a message box (which looks like a Lenovo-thing, not a Vista-thing) saying: "Invalid computer name".If I start the computer from "shut down" state, the fingerprint log-on works just fine. I have found other posts on Google from Lenovo (I think they were all x61 owners) experiencing the problem. But no solutions. The problem started just a few days after I acquired the computer (brand new) - no funny installations or anything. It may have happened right after I upgraded to the latest version of the fingerprint software (3.2.0.275) as advised by the Thinkvantage System Update utility. Please help, it makes using the computer as a pure tablet a big nuissance, since logging on with the on screen keyboard is quite cumbersome if you have a proper strong password. MartinMessage Edited by mskau on 02-05-2009 03:30 PM

Answer:X200 tablet: Fingerprint after sleep/lock: Invalid computer name

I have the exact same issue, and I agree it is a PITA. I removed the fingerprint reader hardware and software, rebooted, installed everything using the latest version (3.2.0.275) and it still is a problem.  I noticed though that after the installation, it still remembered my print information, so it doesn't look like the uninstall removes "everything."  Part of that residual information probably remembers the previous computer name. Some posts in other groups recommend dropping down to an older version of the software, but I'm hesitant to do that since this latest version has changes to the software for better battery usage.  I need all the battery I can get. Ben

I have a Samsung Galaxy TabPro S and there is a very annoying problem to do with the display where after it times out, the display will not immediately wake up. Windows isn't in a sleep state as my music still plays in the background while the display is off. I have also turned off connected standby in the registry.

An example is when you leave your PC on and the monitor turns off but the PC is still running and not in sleep or hibernation, but when you shake the mouse or press a key, it will not instantly turn the display on and seems like the display itself has went to sleep.

Is there a setting I can change to do with the display itself so it wakes up immediately on keyboard/mouse click?

TLDR; Display itself takes very long to wake up rather than instant after screen timeout. Looks like the display has went into a form of sleep rather than Windows 10.

Hi there,

I was running Windows 7 home premium on my pc on a 2TB hdd, and it was running fine, I had a 500GB as a separate hdd aswell, attached at the time. So I installed windows 8 on the 500GB hdd, activated it, tried to restart, I restarts, but now in both windows 8 and 7, I am having trouble:

In windows 8:
Press shutdown, it does nothing, press restart, it restarts, press sleep, it restarts.

In windows 7:
press shutdown, it restarts, press restart, it restarts, press sleep, it restarts.

What must I do?!

Answer:Pc won't shutdown or sleep, only restart

You might try shutting fast startup off in Win8--if it's on of course.

Hi there

I have a Samsung ATIV Smart PC and have been running into some trouble. Whenever the tablet goes into sleep mode, I can't get it to wake up like it normally would. I can't seem to shut it down or restart the machine either.

Sorry I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to this stuff. I have attached the error reports though

If i've screwed anything up, let me know!

Ok so I just finished installing Windows 7 and I am getting a BSOD when I try to either shutdown, restart or sleep the computer. Now I know how frustrating it is to troubleshoot someone who doesn't give enough information so I'm going to try to be as detailed as possible.

This is the second time I have tried working with windows 7 and in both cases I have been getting the same thing; BSOD on shutdown, etc. I have tried a few things some worked and some didn't.

1. I updated my BIOS to the latest one that HP has for my model of PC.
---> This didn't change anything... starts up a bit faster but it still BlueScreen's

2. I tried booting up in safe mode and then shutting down.
---> This worked. I was able to shutdown perfectly, no BSOD; everything went fine. It is for this reason I'm going to guess that this is a driver related issue.... hmmm

3. I unplugged all the extra crap I have plugged in to the back of my PC (wireless mouse, usb hub, etc..)
---> This made no change. When I started up in regular boot mode and then tried to shutdown, same thing... hangs on the "Shutting Down..." page for like 30 minutes then just BlueScreens.

Those are the things I've tried SO Far.... I wanted to get a picture/information on what the actual BlueScreen error is but I actually lost the paper... and sitting around waiting 30 mins for it to bluescreen is a long time... but if it must be done to fix this then so be it... I will literally do anything to get this to work

Hey guys. I hope someone here can help me with my current problem on my desktop. Whenever I try to shutdown my computer the montior shuts off and my drives stops after a few seconds, but my fans and LEDs keeps running.
I've tried to do all the suggestions from My Laptop wont shutdown , sleep and restart!! and from Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly - Forums - CNET

As of now, the only way I can shutdown my computer is by holding the powerbutton after I hear my drives have stopped or by using the switch on the powersupply.

Anyone have a fix for this problem?  Model is T400 2764-CT0 Symptoms:1. Shutdown leads to automatic restart bringing up "Windows failed to shutdown properly" screen.2. Sleep does the same3. Hibernate leads to an automatic restart, but Windows reloads from hibernation image correctly4. Can only shutdown by holding down the power button for a few seconds5. Can also turn off by holding down button during boot; but this only works sometimes Fixes attempted (none worked):1. Unchecked "automatic restart on system failure"2. Updated to latest bios3. Reinstalled Windows on new hard drive; tried to shutdown right after installation It seems like an obvious hardware problem but I wanted to see if anyone else had this issue and there was a bios fix or something before I send it in. Thanks!

Windows Vista Business x64, 8Gb, SP1
We are missing the Restart/Sleep/Shutdown options from the Start menu.

All we see is LOG OFF and LOCK.

I am using the Administrator account.

The prior IT guy left without any documentation.

We have to use the [shutdown.exe -s -t 15 –f] command which works fine.

But would like the standard GUI functions back.

Any ideas where to look or how to bring back to resolve this.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

After a couple failed attempts at installing a new SSD and flashing a new BIOS I finally got my system running fast and smooth - except for one (or 3) glaring issue.
I'm not sure if it was the second install of windows 7 or during a flash of the BIOS but I now have these 3 issues.
1. On shutdown windows seems to shutdown but my hardware (fans, mobo) don't. Drives seem to power down, though.
2. On restart instead of fast ssd reboot computer hangs a bit, 15 seconds, on the "shutting down..." stage and then machine fully powers down for 5 seconds and then proceeds to normal restart.
3. On sleep windows "sleeps" (except for fans, mobo) but I can't wake it. Physically pushing power button on front for 5 seconds shuts computer down. On power up it actually starts back up as if it were sleeping, ie programs still running open.

What I've done to try to fix.
1. Re-flashed BIOS.
2. Put old SSD back as boot drive (which lead me to believe its hardware related since everything functioned fine on that drive before I put in new one) and problem persisted.
3. Took out new hardware (GPU, RAM, Fan) and put back original RAM.
4. Downloaded every imaginable driver I could.
5. Tested safe mode, and msconfig start-up options and problem persisted.
6. Read every forum out there for suggestions.

I'm left with thinking I damaged my mobo or PSU along the way of installing new hardware or BIOS.
Any other suggestions before I drop more money on hardware would be muc... Read more

It sounds like your sleep mode in bios is set to S1(POS).
With S1 the fans run, and the power light should blink.
In bios, change the sleep mode (ACPI Suspend Type) to S3(STR).
See if that change fixes the wake up issue.

It also sounds like you have Hybrid Sleep enabled.
With Hybrid Sleep, if the power goes out while sleeping, hibernation is used.
That would explain why the programs are still running on power up.
This setting is in Windows Advanced Power Option Settings.

In an Elevated Command prompt enter
powercfg -a
This will list your available sleep states.

I'd like to upgrade the display on my x201 laptop. The outdated TFT display is getting a bit old. And I could use some expert advice - or even intelligent guesses as to whether certain LCD panels will work in the x201 laptop. The usual advice to upgrade a x201 laptop display is to go with a Hydis AFFS (similar to IPS) display e.g. the HV121WX4-120. Or alternately a Samsung PVA display e.g. the LTN121AP02-001. These are CFFL panels, so given my LED laptop, I'd also need an inverter (42W8009 or 42W8010) and CFFL variant cable e.g. 44C9909.  Okay great. But for various reasons I'd very much prefer to retain the WLED backlight, rather than change to a CFFL display. There are any number of forum posts saying that this isn't possible. But that appears to be refuted by some well documented threads that describe successful retrofits of better spec LED backlit panels in their x201 laptops e.g. using a Samsung LTN121AT07-L02 (27R2451) WLED LCD. With that thought in mind, I'm trying to discern whether a x201 tablet screen will work in my x201 laptop? e.g. a Samsung LTN121AP0310 or Toshiba LTD121KX6B-110 LCD. These are multitouch LCDs. I'm not counting on the multitouch to be operational. Just whether the LCD screen will work in a conventional manner in the laptop. Has anyone heard of these panels being retrofitted into a x201 laptop? Or spot any obvious impediments to using them in the laptop?    --Stock (original) x201 laptop LCD: Au Optroni... Read more

Hi Guys,

Recently my laptop start to get real slow and i decided to by a Samsung EVO 850 250GB. I created an installation on a USB pen drive with the help of "Media Creation Tool" that can be found here

Download Windows 10

and formatted the SSD disk and installed Windows 10 from the scratch.

During the installation windows tried to reboot but it got stuck but i did not gave much importance, so i pressed the power button for a while and as expected it shutdown, i started the laptop again and the installation continued with no issue. But the problem never went a way.

Symptoms
I can't shutdown or restart (or even sleep) the computer properly: the power and wifi (if on) light indicator keeps on and i can hear the fans. The only way to shut down is to press the power button for some seconds.

Along with Windows 10, i have Ubuntu 16 installed but it works perfectly.

Before i had Windows 8 and i never had this problem before. I'm only experiencing now

What i tried
I tried almost anything that can be found on the forums:

Command line shutdown: shutdown /s /t 5
This does not work. shuts down the symptoms remain. No total shut down

Fast Startup
Fast Startup option is not checked. It tried as well to uncheck hibernate, but the problem remains

When I press power button
This option is set to "shutdown" for "On battery" and "plugged in"

I downloaded the updates. There were a few and after the update i was able to shutdown pro... Read more

My Notebook, just 11 months old failed last week with hard drive error. Recovery software even aborted due to hard ware error. I replaced the HD, so here is my question. Is it better, on a daily basis, to just close the Cover and let it sleep over night, or is it acceptable to shutdown then start new the next day ? I've read that most vulnerable time for HD is startup time. Seems to me, 11 months not good for HD to go out ! But at least it was still under Warranty.

Answer:Shutdown restart next day or just Close Cover & Sleep

Hi i would personally shut down completly and start it up the next day as you can save alot on electicity as well. If you need it on over night then you could use the sleep mode but only if your actually doing something on the machine itsself. ?Please click ?Accept as Solution ? if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.Click the ?Click the ?Kudos, Thumbs Up" on the bottom right to say ?Thanks? for helping!

Hello, here's my problem as best I can describe it. When I click on the start memu, the shutdown, restart, and sleep buttons are gone. However, there is a lock down button. I have tried placing the button there by going to control panel, searching power, power options, and changing the settings so shutdown should appear (but it does not).

Also I found a posting for running gpedit.msc, but cannot find it. I have since learned that gpedit.msc is unavailable for my home edition version of vista.

What I would like to know is how to put the shutdown/restart/sleep button back into the start menu. Thank you.

Answer:Shutdown/Restart/Sleep Buttons Missing

Try this and see if it works
1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.
2. In the left pane, click on User Configuration, Administrative Templates, and Start Menu and Taskbar.
3. In the right pane, right click on Remove and prevent access to the Shutdown, Restart,Sleep, and Hibernate commands and click on Properties.
4. To Show Shutdown Options -
A) Select (dot) Disabled or Not Configured and click on OK.

This can be caused by the fact that your computer cannot be put into hibernation for some reason. It may be a BIOS setting or it may be an incompatible component or driver that is related to sleep, such as a graphics card.
Is the sleep option missing completely or is it just grayed out?

Since about a week my PC is unable to fully shut down, sleep or even restart. Upon trying any of these my monitor shuts down as normal and a part of the PC does too (I can hear something shutting down in the hardware), but the PC is still on as indicated by the power button LED (sleep = blinking, restart/shutdown = solid). I have to turn it off manually by holding down the power button for 4-ish seconds

I have googled and tried some things so far, including:Re?nstalling mobo drivers of MSI. This includes Intel chipset drivers.
Reset my power plan to balanced (default)
Disabled Windows fast boot option
Disabled hibernate via cmd
Rollbacked graphics card drivers
Updated graphics card drivers
Set BIOS to default. Upon saving and rebooting from BIOS, the computer froze. Monitor did not turn off and was stuck on the BIOS screen. Computer did not turn off in the slightest.

I'm running Vista home premium basic(64) on my laptop. About three days ago, i lost the "restart, shutdown, and sleep" options in my start menu. The only things i have left are "switch user, logoff, and lock." I've tried going into the power options settings, but don't have the "power settting saver "option described by the tutorial. The only thing I can think of is that I performed a registry cleanup using my PC Cleaner program which I have installed. Does anyone have a possible reason and/or solution for this problem?

Answer:Lost restart, sleep and shutdown options

Do a system restore from before the problem and stop with the reg cleaners.

You do not need reg cleaners with 7. They do more harm than good, as you have seen.

Not sure where to post this ... hence new thread.
Has anyone found a magic keystroke combination for "Sleep" or is there anyway to create one? I know about Win+I then Power then Sleep.

Has anyone found an option to stop scheduled tasks or other triggers that "Wake" your computer from sleep? I find my computer running in the morning after putting it to sleep at the end of the previous evening! I have reviewed all 41 scheduled tasks created by Windows and installed applications and "apps" and found none that have the Wake Computer check box checked. What's annoying is the fact that once woken the computer does not go back to sleep again! I am using the supplied balanced Power plan. Any advice?

Answer:Windows 8 Sleep, Wake, Restart and Shutdown

I use this approach to the various "power" options. Check your wake on lan settings in Device Manager > for your various network adapters. Also, check wan on lan setting in BIOS or, I suppose, UEFI.

Hi all,

I'm somewhat tech savvy, and my laptop has me absolutely stumped. I'll cut to the chase:

I get a dirty shutdown and restart (prompting Windows' safe mode option) any time the system attempts to enter sleep mode--whether by the Start menu or by pressing the power button (which I've set to enter sleep mode). I've asked Windows to produce a dump file in the event of a BSOD, but none have been created. I've gone through all driver updates I can think of, HP site updates, reinstalled the OS twice, etc.

I had some luck re-enabling the Windows 7 logon screen, which had previously been disabled. Worked for a few days, and I'm back where I started.

Any ideas?

Hi! Yesterday I tried to go to my BIOS in my ACER v5-452G Windows 8.1 laptop via UEFI Settings. Then afterwards, my laptop takes 5 minutes in shutting down (the power indicator of LED though the screen clears in a minute). Same with Restart and Sleep. However, when I try to restart via settings and that UEFI, it is in my normal speed. Hope you can help me. Thank you.

I'm a student. I used to open a lot of pdf, website, word. I need to spend a lot of time to adjust those software. so, generally, I just use the sleep mode. when I left the T400 a moment, the laptop will switch to the sleep mode. but I found the laptop usually hangs. I have to press the power button to shutdown it and lost all of working. It happend many times. which upset me. I have google a lot of website, but nothing is usefull---update driver, OS,active the security chip, anything.... which also happened randomly, sometimes it's stable, sometimes it happened 2 times during one hours.. .anybody can help me??? thanks. The OS is vista 32. update all drivers and hotfix.   Message Edited by enjoytp on 01-09-2009 06:51 AMMessage Edited by enjoytp on 01-09-2009 03:23 PM

Hello knowledgeable forum people, I am hoping for some help.

My computer crashes on shutdown, restart and I suspect hibernate (I think that is what causes them while it sits idle). It was more broken yesterday than it is now, as I have seemingly solved some of the problems. I have included some history below, just in case it's useful.

--- HISTORY ---

I got back from a trip (4 month exchange) and installed 26 windows updates. only KB2607576 failed, then it worked when windows tried again. When I opened Windows after that, my NIC card and several USB drivers weren't working (code 10 I think... certain .dlls didn't load). I had to disable/reenable each device/usb one in order to get them working. Occasionally the system would hang while I did this, usually on the last USB - forcing a manual power off.

I eventually rolled back to a restore solved before I left for my exchange and; updated my BIOS, chipset and USB to the latest from the manu's site. I figure windows installed the new USB 3.0 drivers (Renases USB 3.0 Host Controller/Root Hub) without any regard to my chipset/bios version and this somehow caused the problem - though I have no evidence and little experience in this area.

Windows was also telling me Skype wasn't working, though it appeared to be working fine (it gave mo the fix a problem with... dialogue). I have re-installed Skype since.

Now everything seems to be working (NIC, USB, etc.), except for the crashes. When it crashes, I see a BSOD. A BSOD was happe... Read more

Hi guys,

I posted a couple weeks ago on here about an issue with my new laptop which luckily you were able to solve within a very short time, so I thought I would try again.
I no longer have any issues of BSOD during use of my laptop, but when I shut the lid for it to sleep, or sometimes during an attempted restart the BSOD occurs.

Attached are the files from the diagnostic tool!

On a non BSOD related note. My laptop has the intel(r) centrino(r) advanced-n 6235 wireless chipset in it which drops out and disables itself regularly. A potential fix I found on the internet was to roll back the drivers to a much earlier one, however the driver for this device was what caused the original BSODs which are now solved. Any guidance on this?

Thanks a lot,
PEter

Hi pbrownless .

I'm afraid I have some bad news :\ .
Your description in the second paragraph along with the most recent dump (and it's consistent
among the rest of them for that matter) leads me to believe that you might have a defected hardware.
The bug checks are all 0x9F which is DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE that happens in
transitions between power states most commonly S0 (ON state) > S3 (Sleep state)
or vice-verse. You can read more HERE.

The most common cause is a device driver but sometimes it's the hardware itself
that is at fault.
Just by looking at the unloaded modules, we see the problematic NETwsw00.sys and a hibernation
driver which are both inline with you original post, given that you had troubles in the past regarding
this driver/hardware and that it is recently misbehaving in general i would consider an RMA if that is an option.

Hello All,

I am totally new to this and am really confused. About maybe a week ago I started having BSOD, plus Windows wouldn't restart after going into Sleepmode, and when I tried to Shut Down it would bring up the shut down screen then just keep "shutting down" with out ever shutting down.

So I read some internet stuff and "Reinstalled Windows 7" and seem to still have the issues. So now I am here.

Any assistance or help would be great and I am a total novice at this and I would really like to get my PC back to normal.

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

Hi all . This is my problem, when i open start menu and click on white arrow, the options shutdown, restart, hibernate and sleep are missing. Also if i try shutdown my PC using Alt+F4 it will not respond. I can close a program using Alt+F4 but it will now react when i need to shutdown my PC with it, if you know what i mean. I think i have this problem since I installed SP1 . for now i use red button as shutdown button but it is really annoying because something is missing, I like it all to be in its place. You can see attachment for some details.

EDIT: i have vista home premium so any solution that goes trough local policies editor will not work

I have the panel that ask if i want to start windows normally or in safe mode.  it is displayed that windows had to be shutdown to prevent hardware or data failure. My machine is up to date in Windows, and i use the latest bios available. when i run toolbox, there is no update available for power management. i disable all settings regarding to wake on lan and magic packet. Someone has an hint on this ?

hey, sorry to revive an old thread, but this was the only other person I could find with this issue.I had originally reinstalled power manager and the the pm driver because it wouldn't save any custom power settings. When I finally got it working, it wouldnt wake up from sleep just like the above user's issue.Machine is relatively new win7x64 install with all updates (lenovo updates too) installed.Would like to avoid a total reinstall if at all possible.

Computer: Dell Latitude E6400 running Windows 7 Professional
When the user clicks start -> shutdown > The shutdown, restart, sleep and hibernate buttons are all greyed out. This is actually the second user we've had with this issue with. For the first user I fixed the problem using the below gpedit.msc fix,
but for this other user, it doesn't change anything.
gpedit.msc fix:
"User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar -> Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands" to Disabled.
I've also tried adding the following registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer created a 32bit DWORD named NoClose and set the option to 0.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer created a 32bit DWORD named NoClose and set the option to 0.
Lastly I have scanned the machine with two different anti-virus programs, and each found no issues. I can't get the shutdown option to not be greyed out. Anyone have any suggestions I haven't tried already?
Thanks,

Answer:Windows 7 - Shutdown, Restart, Sleep and Hibernate buttons greyed out

AHA, I found in gpedit.msc under Computer Configuration -> Windows Setting -> Security Setting -> Local Policies -> User Right Assignment is a control for Shutdown, and the group "Users" was not in the list.
I can't test to see if this worked as the computer is in NY, I'm in California and I have disconnected my OCS session, so I will update tomorrow when the user gets into work. Maybe this did the trick???Vinny http://www.intermedia.net

Hello, I just got a lenovo carbon x1 and when the computer comes out of hibernation or sleep a symbol that says the caps lock is off appears on the screen for a few seconds. How do I stop it from telling me the caps lock is off after waking it up from sleep or hibernation? thanks

Answer:Caps lock on screen display after sleep or hibernation?

Hi Michaelalex17,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

It is a default setting which shows the ?Caps OFF? for a few seconds, because there is an option to show always or show for a few seconds, we cannot disable the individual on-screen popup display.
If you are looking for the setting. You can go to graphic properties to change, right click on the desktop and go to screen resolution ? Advance settings ? click on On-screen display tab and make the changes for your convenient.

Hope this helps!!!

Do post us back if the issue still persists.

Best regards,

Hi,

Every time I try to put put my laptop to sleep, hibernate, restart it or shutdown, it stalls for about 10 minutes before giving me a Driver Power State Failure.

Having installed "WhoCrashed" and "Windbg", I was able to determine it was related to "ntkrnlmp.exe", "ndis.sys", "raspppoe.sys" and a vpn driver at one point or another. I "believe" I managed to uninstall the offending vpn driver but of course still overall have the same issue.

This appeared to occur while trying to do a windows update last week but I can't be sure. I presume, there is a out of date or corrupt driver but just can't seem to determine which one.

Many thanks in advance,

Hob

Hello. We've got an unusual problem when applying driverpackage for lenovo x201.OSD with SCCM 2007.. The Audio driver installs successfully during OSD (with silent install switch) and in devicemanager we can see that the conexant 20585 Smart Audio HD driver has been installed. Same with "Intel screen audio". But in the Audio options in controlpanel all the fields is grayed out. There is with other words no associated soundcard / standard device. If we install the driver again, logged in as an user the recently grayed out fields in Audio options automagically now shows the correct input / output devices (Conexant audio) and the sound starts working. Is there some issue when installing drivers in SYSTEM context?Notice: There is no "?" in device manager. BR!

I recently purchased a new (used) Asus laptop K53SV because I needed better graphics and wanted to downgrade to Windows 7. When I purchased the laptop I gave the store a brand new 256GB SSD and they duly transferred the contents of the original WD 640GB drive to the SSD. The laptop has worked perfectly ever since.

However, I was stuck with a 640GB drive. So just the other day I decided to replace the CDROM drive with the WD 640GB. Who uses CDROM drives anymore? I have an external one if I really need it. I bought the correct HD carrier and installed the drive. But now I cannot cleanly shutdown/sleep/restart etc. If I shutdown the screen goes black after awhile but the power button light stays on. After a few more minutes the system blues screens with this error:

Driver power state failure
Stop 0x9F

So I did a diagnostic startup to eliminate the possibility of any other driver causing the problem because I had also upgraded the internal wireless at the same time. Still same problem. So I removed the WD 640GB and now the system shutdowns/restarts/sleeps normally.

BTW when the WD 640GB is in the system I am able to use it without any apparent problems.

WD support is having problems right now otherwise I would have downloaded their diag utility before posting. I will do that but in the mean time any suggestions? Is there anything inherently wrong with what I did? Did I miss something? Thanks.

Hi dpetican, welcome to the Forum.

Have you accessed the BIOS & checked that the CD/DVD drive is not still showing in the boot order. If so you will have to remove it from the start up list.

Then go to Control Panel then Device Manager & see if the CD/DVD is still showing & if so uninstall it.

Could you then post back with a screen shot of your Disc Management with the 640GB drive attached to your computer. The tutorial below will show you how to do that & there is a link at the end of it explaining how to upload that to the Forum.

Since there is no Win 7 Power driver supplied for N500 on regular download page, Create a Windows restore point first, in case this does not work, or Setup does not auto create a restore point. Install the System Interface driver found on THIS Lenovo beta download page first. Install the Power Manager driver found on same page. (Extract the zip files and run Setup.)

I have upgraded my X201 Tablet to Windows 10 32bit. As far as I can tell, everything is working, including the WACOM drivers and touchscreen.  Wireless has worked perfectly so far, not sure about Bluetooth as I don't use it. My only issue is that the buttons on the display do not work. The power button located on the display does work. I tried installing the Tablet Button Driver II and it will go through the install but the buttons do not work.  This is the download link:http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds027627 The document claims Windows 10 compatability and was Last Updated :08 Jun 2015. On inspection, all the files extracted are dated from 2012 and when trying to manually run the software Windows throws up an error that the software is not supported on this PC.   I removed and reinstalled and noted that the driver information page when running the installer does NOT have Windows 10 listed as a supported system. My assumption is that the driver that they have linked on the download page is NOT the most current driver and is infact the driver for Windows 7 from 2012. Does anyone know how to contact Lenovo to get the correct driver posted to the page, or know of an alternate source to try and find it?

Hi

I think I might be down to my last Win8 problem. When the PC wakes up, I get this ghosted display issue that is solved only by terminating and restarting Explorer.exe (see attached jpeg).

I'm hoping this is a common problem with a simple solution.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:Display glitch: have to restart Explorer.exe after Sleep

Hi,

Not common at all but whatever the solution is, whether we find it or not, is.

You can run the tool in the top thread of this subforum. Post the zip it and its linked thread show to make. We'll see what we can do.

If you have 3rd party security like antivirus or firewall, don't even bother with that yet. Just remove it/them in safe mode with the specific tool(s) for it/them.

When ever the computer is kept in sleep mode, restarted or restarted after changing the BIOS setting. The display doesn't show anything. The fan's, the hard drives are powered up but nothing happens.

To get out of this the computer needs to be force shutdown by pressing and holding the power button, and then turning of the Power supply unit, then wait for few minutes and turn on the PSU and then power the computer on. I have also tried resetting the CMOS. Removing each component and try.

For now i'm not turning of my computer, just to be safe.

Is this the issue with PSU not able to supply enough power? I replaced my old PSU (300+ watt) with a 430 watt PSU. It was fine for month or so and the issue started happening again.

Please help in resolving the issue.

I'm looking for some tips to fix a problem with a dual monitor setup on Windows 10. The symptom is "no DVI-D signal detected by 2nd monitor after Sleep or Shutdown" - but everything works fine after a Restart. This behavior is consistent and repeatable.
I've tried both "extend display" and "duplicate display" in Windows Settings and get the same result.
The new monitor (which does not detect a signal after a sleep/wake cycle) is on DVI-D port 2. It uses a basic/standard 3ft/1m cable.
The existing monitor (which as been working fine for years) is on DVI-D port 1. It uses a high/qualitiy  6ft/2m cable.
I've reversed the monitors (exchanged DVI-D ports) but when I do that the new monitor giving me the headache flickers - I think it does not like the longer DVD-D cable.
I've got the latest BIOS and drivers available from Dell. Yes, I know, this is an old computer, but it otherwise works just fine! It has been very stable in other ways throughout its long lifetime as WinVista, Win7, and now Win10.
Dell Inspiron 530
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Monitor 1 (working) ViewSonic VX2235wm (Windows detects as "ViewSonic VX2235wm")
Monitor 2 (problem) NEC LCD223WXM (Windows detects as "Generic PnP Monitor")
Both monitors are set to their native 1680x1050 65kHz/60Hz refresh rates.

I just purchase a z70-80 with Windows 10, and I installed VMware WorkStation with Ubuntu running inside it. The screen lock comes up after a few minutes even though I am running development tools in the VM. I went to display settings, and in Power and sleep and modified the screen turn off and sleep to 45 minutes. But that did not resolve the issue. I would like to have the screen up indefinately. What setting do I need to adjust please? I do not know if it is a sleep mode, or the screen saver, or something else. I hope I am describing the issue with the right words.

Hello all, I am recently having some inconsistent display issues with my Lenovo U410 laptop i7 1TB with a Windows 8 PRO upgrade (came with windows 7).  When I press the Power Button on my laptop to put it to sleep, the Screen turns black as if it is off, but the Power & Battery LEDs on the front of the laptop remain on, as well as the LED on the power button.  However, when I try to wake my laptop, there is no response on the screen (remaining black as if it is off).  The internal fan is running, however I receive no feedback when "blindly" trying to input my password. I've tried to turn the power off and back on to no avail.  I've also removed the power source and held the power button for a couple of seconds and that did not solve the issue either. I've tried connecting the laptop to a screen via HDMI (since there is no other AV port on the device), but there was no signal being sent through.  This is an inconsistent issue that began yesterday 6/11/2013.  When the laptop is left alone for a little and is turned on again, the display works, but after closing the lid (sleep) or pressing the button, the display fails to turn on upon awakening. In most recent circumstances, Today (6/12/2013) I was installing a Windows update that required my computer to restart.  When the update configured perfectly BEFORE it was restarting, but AFTER the restart, my internal fan began to work, but the display was not on. Does... Ok, the problem has already been stated in the topic. This might be a pretty long post, but please have patience, and I'll be ever grateful. The details are the following: (I am actually helping out a friend on this one, by the way)

My friend bought a new laptop (Acer Aspire 5738zg) about 6 months ago, and it worked like a charm. However, he never ran it on battery, only socket-charge... thus the battery quickly became electro-exhausted, and the laptop's battery weakened severely. The laptop can currently only run for 10 minutes at any given time without recharging.

He does not need the laptop to be mobile, though. But he wants to be able to utilize a particular external USB-HDD. I do not remeber the model, however the HDD is fully functional and works with every other computer he has plugged it into (about 10 different PC's).

Symptoms:
The laptop boots up and runs fine on socket-charge. The USB-HDD is plugged in... and the system freezes instantly. No respons comes from the PC, whatsoever. A forced reboot (pushing the start-button for 5 seconds) is required to restart the laptop.

Of course, my first guess was that his battery lacked the power required to run the external HDD through a USB-port. But my friend recently bought an entirely new battery from the vendor (warranty had expired for the old battery), yet the problem remains.

And of course, he's rather purky since the new battery costed $80 after all.

What on earth can be causing t... Read more

Well, I have no idea what caused this but the tablet buttons (even the on/off button) the lights for caps lock and scroll lock as well as the automatic screen orientation change when I flip it to be a tablet have stopped working. Also the screen does not turn off anymore when the lid is closed. Reinstalled pretty much all of the drivers, no effect.Any ideas? Is this thing already broken?

Answer:X41 tablet buttons + scroll lock and caps lock lights + screen orientation change stopped working!

well, SOMETHING is broken.. though it would seen unlikely it is hardware.. a question: did you load anything new just before this happened..?anything at all..scanner drivers or printer drivers or a new application..? OH!, welcome to the lenovo community..!

Good Afternoon,

I have performed a conversion to XP Pro on the x201 Tablet. Everything seems to be in order but the 4 buttons on the screen do not seem to be working at intended.
The button with the circular arrow symbol performs a Ctrl Alt Del, the other 3 do nothing.

I believe I installed the proper drivers for this.

But my ThinkPad has integrated USIM reader, and my GOBI 2000 does recognize the card and connects to the 3G Network. Does any of you use EAP-SIM on X201T? Can you tell me how you do it?

Hi everyoneI have just gotten my x201 tablet, and have 2 questions.1. The screen has one dead pixel, is that common for x201t?2. I found neither the pen nor the touch screen is accurate. And because you can not see the cursor before you touch the screen, it's hard to catch a button or a menu item by touching. I need to try several times to get it even after calibration. Is it common for you?Thank you for your reply.

Answer:2 questions about my X201 tablet

My screen doesn't have any dead pixels, so I want to say that isn't normal, and I would try to get it exchanged. Calibration isn't perfect on any tablet, but when calibrating you need to try to calibrate it with the screen oriented how you will use it in tablet mode, and calibrate with the screen at whatever angle you will typically use it in. Typically the screen is the most accurate in the center and the least accurate along the edges. I've also read that it will never be better than how it was from the factory, so I just reset mine and have adapted how I write to the factory calibration. After a week or two you don't even notice if the stylus matches up perfectly on screen. But then again, if your screen is messed up, you might have a bigger calibration problem than what is normal. EDIT: My x201 doesn't have multitouch, so you should wait and let others chime in regarding multitouch calibration.

Hi all, I ordered an x201 tablet (should be here within a week) but i just need a little clarification on a few things i couldn't really find answers to. 1. I purchased it without a WWAN card (as i didn't know WWAN upgradable meant you needed to buy a card separately) and i want both WWAN and GPS. Does the Gobi 2000 card on the lenovo website come with GPS? as there is no mention of it having GPS capabilities. 2. Is a screen protector worth it? I have a multi-touch screen, but after looking on the internet there seems to be a problem with screen protectors affecting the multi-touch features. (i'm not that bothered with scratches or smudges, but will not using such a protector create black spots?) 3. To increase battery life is it possible to install an express card SSD and tell the system to store frequently used items there? What sort of program would i need or will windows 7 do this for me? 4. It comes with a 1 year depot warranty, can i purchase more before the 1 year expires? is it worth it and what does it cover? 5. Is there a slice battery for the x201t like the T and W series? from what i have been reading the 8 cell battery doesn't get anywhere near the stated 8 hours, can anyone confirm this? Sorry for all the questions, probably should have researched a bit more before buying it. Regards, Dennis

Answer:Few questions about the X201 Tablet

Well i just got my X201 Tablet i can answer a few of these questions. -Screen protector won't work with multi-touch features so they are probably not worth it.-Installing an SSD card in the expresscard slot using (readydrive i think) won't really help battery life-warranty can be upgraded, but seems to be a hit and miss as most of the repairs on the x201 tablet are considered user payable items.-Battery life with very light use using an 8 cell battery is around 4 hours with half brightness and wifi. Still unsure about the gobi 2000 WWAN card. Can someone confirm that all lenovo Gobi 2000 cards come with GPS capabilities, if not, where would i find one with both WWAN and GPS. Thanks

Hello, I recently purchased the X201 core i7 tablet with 8gb ram 500gb hdd superbright screen and i was obviously ecstatic when i got it from the UPS man  As a graphic artist I rely on pen sensitivity on tablets, and much to my dismay the pen sensitivity just didnt work at all for me. I since read the forums and realise that so many people have an issue with this and with much reading around i found that there were barely any answers/fixes. So, i will tell you what fixed this for me. Now this worked for me, it may not work for you but i hope it can help some people. I read on a forum elsewhere that for Photoshop you can fix this problem by turning OpenGL rendering off in Preferences->Performance. I did this and restarted CS4 and to my absolute delight it had fixed the issue, but not only for Photoshop! for the whole system! I must admit i had tried all the other fixes and merged installer fixes and none of them worked properly, but somewhere along the line i lost track of which drivers i was on when i got it working, but i do recommend trying this. Hope it helps and lenovo...... this laptop cost me £1700 and pen sensitivity is not supplied to me working properly! please please look into this and make it a core function as it is such a let down when youve looked forward to this otherwise brilliant piece of kit for so long. ruthy

Hey everyone, I ran Factory Recovery Disks in the thinkvantage tools and made both the Boot Disk and the Data Discs. I used a CD-RW disc and the Boot Disc was copied onto 1 disc, and the Data Discs consist of 14 discs.  My thought was that if I turn on my computer, push the blue thinkvantage button and then boot from my CD drive (in my ultrabay) it would take me to a Rescue and Recovery menu where I can then reformat my harddrive, and reload the machine back to factory settings, however what happened when I booted from my CD drive, was that it just started back up as normal. I've been at this since last night, and there is very little resources, I have absolutely no idea how to reformat my laptop. Hello,I got a X201 Tablet with the multitouch display a month ago, it's an awesome machine, but recently I noticed a very faint CPU whine noise coming from the upper left of the body, close to the fan. the noise level is comparable to the noise of the fan at mid speed, so it's not terrible, but my problem and maybe same as other people out there is as soon as you discoreved, your brain tunes to it and you can hear it above anything, or I'm going crazy. My question is if this is something normal? the system is under warranty from lenovo, should I send it in, but any chance I will get it back with the same noise. I guess I can live with it if it doesn't become louder, but I don't know really want to do.. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum!

Could you please post the MTM number here? It's a 7 digit code that can be found at the bottom of the laptop, in a black & white sticker. Please do not post the S/N!

I _just_ bought a new X201 tablet, and am very happy with it, except that the screen color is very yellowish or orangish. Green trees look brown, blue skies look grey. I tried both calibrating through Color Management in the Control Panel and endless adjustments in Intel's Control Center. It's as if there's just very little blue in the screen--a mechanical issue. Mind you, it's crisp and clear; it just makes everything look like a photo taken under incandescent light with a camera set for daylight..  Anyone else?

Answer:Color on X201 tablet

I've never seen that with a brand new machine, but it does tend to happen with IPS screens after a while - i.e. backlight wear.So the question is - do you see this color shift even in the BIOS screen? If so, you'll need to have it fixed under warranty.

After plugging a digital camera into my laptop with a usb cord it is now stuck on the startup repair screen. It says that it can't fix automatically and if it is due to recently attaching a device to it then to unplug and restart which I have tryed numerous times.

Answer:toshiba laptop will not restart after plugging in camera wit

Perform a Factory Recovery. This will set up Windows on your laptop just as it was when you first bought it.

I have Windows7 Ultimate - 32 bit for my OS. Every so often my computer will shut down when I insert a thumb drive or other device into any USB port. It occurs maybe once every 5 plug ins, and it doesn't matter which device I'm using. I was told by the shop that built my system that the problem is with Win 7 and that Microsoft is aware of it, and has a 'fix' for affected machines.I have been unable to locate the issue on the Microsoft website. Can anyone help?

Answer:Intermittent shutdown when plugging in to USB post

To my knowledge this is not a Win7 issue or glitch...Sounds like a bad port to me...Is it just the one ? ?

Answer:Recovery DVD for x201 tablet (windows 7 64-bit)

Good day and welcome to the community.

Short answer: you can't.

Lenovo OEM Windows recovery media is not available as a legal download. You should contact Lenovo Service (info below) to discuss your options for obtaining recovery media. They will confirm MTM and serial number, I believe, and there may be an associated cost.

Regards.
