Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

Question: Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

Is there any way to use the trackpoint on Lenovo computers as a joystick? I.e. a device that would be useful for a flight simulator? Essentially, it wouldn't be moving the mouse along a line based on the direction you're pushing it in with a speed based on your finger pressure, but rather moving the mouse to a stationary position on the screen based on the direction and pressure you're pushing on it with.

Preferred Solution: Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Using the trackpoint as a joystick?

Download the latest version of ppjoy - it comes with a mouse to joystick driver that works well with trackpoint

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Solved!

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Question: Joystick

Hi everyone, not sure if this topic is in the right subforum

Anyway, Im looking to get a joystick for flight sims and games that have aircraft in them, like DCS Blackshark, arma 2, etc..
Ive narrowed it down to 2 joysticks, but cant decide so I wanted to hear your opinion.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6104049&cm_re=Joystick-_-26-104-049-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...6280016&cm_re=joystick-_-26-280-016-_-Product
They are about the same price, though, one does come with a game.
Which one do you think I should get?
The main problem for me to decide is, Ive heard great stuff about Thrustmasters, but I have many great reliable logitech products, and more people reviewed the logitech one, as opposed to the thrustmasters 10.
Which one is easier to set up?
What is panoramic view?
Which one has a better set up in terms of functionality.
And what the heck is a hat switch?
Thanks

It's a Thrustmaster Top Gun Fox 2 Pro connected via gameport on a Creative 32 AWE.

Hello Guys,

i have a special needs child who has a special joystick (that costs €450.00, talk about milking it,it looks like an old atari tv games joystick with 4 colored buttons) anyway the ps2 connector pins got crunched.

and i cut the wire and tried to join it directly to the wires on the ps2/usb wishbone. but the colors dont match on the joystick and the ps2/usb wishbone.

can i make this device USB...just join it to an old mouse usb connector.

there are 7 wires.

a plain stripped wire (silver)

then:

red
brown
yellow
green
orange
pink

the jerk at the special needs web site wants to repair it for €150.00 or sell me a new one for €...yes €500.00
this is actually quite sick...

please help me make a child smile again!!!

Answer:PS2 joystick to USB...

oh by the way, im talking purely from a "wire joining" point of view...not using converters etc...as the wire for the joystick has been cut...

Hi all;
I am not sure if its the right place to post, but I hope so.

I have a Logitech Wingman Extreme 3D with profiler and all drivers. The joystick installs well and it works perfectly from the windows calibration. All keys works from min to max and also the centre is right.I played NFS carbon and it works well with this joystick. But when configuring the Joystick in BF2, it doesnt work.I mean for the front and back movement its detects Joy Axis 2,but also shows the same for right to left and hence shows an error.Any one has any idea why it happens?I also have a logitech Wireless key board and mouse.Could there be interference?Or is it a limitation with BF2?

Plz help and thanks.

Answer:Help with Joystick in BF2

Hi, I use the same Joystick in BF2 not a problem for me, Why not try resettings the settings in BF2 and trying again, if you have already done so i would say there is a prob with the joystick or BF2, to get around the problem try using the joystick on another pc with BF2 installed (if you can)

My stick works fine when putting in on to work with the chopper mode, be sure to keep every thing else still and move it slow.

Any more probs post back!

Hello all, i will be getting a new computer soon, and will be playing alot of the newer games out, especially Doom3, among others. My question is, is there a joystick or game pad that can be used on the pc with these games or do i just stick to my old method of using the keyboard and mouse, which always meant i got my arse kicked quite alot!! Thanks for any help on this, pieman

Answer:joystick or game pad?

for doom3 and most fps games my advice is to stick with with the keyboard and mouse, if your not used to it you soon will be as its easy to pick up after some practise.game pads are good for some games like grand theft auto click here etc that are converted from console versions but this plays well even with mouse and keyboard, depends on the game and how its converted to pc.a joystick in my opinion is essential though for a flight sim game and i would spend money on that if you use them. other than that keyboard and mouse rules.logitech, saitek or microsoft sidwinder products are usually good quality click here click here

Question: Joystick issue

Hey ,appreciate any help ,been on this for awhile now...
Basically pc life was good ,until ,a neighbor gave me a logitech wingman extreme digital 3d joystick ,so ,I try and find a 15 pin port and ,there wasnt one ,bro in law built it and its just been on the onboard realtec soundcard...
So the idea was to go and we bought a cheap diamond extreme 5.1 sound card ,ummm just for that gaming port ,well I disabled onboard soundcard and installed this card and sound part of card all works ,but ,I sure cannot get it to find this stick ,even with logitech profilers ,in device manager it has the yellow ! standard game port next to it ,and it says this...
"This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

So I am sure this is an easy fix ,but ,I cant remember ,the stick doesnt show up on gaming devices either ,please bare with my ignorance ,...
Thanks,My bro in law built it free for me ,he is a tech ,just too late to call him long distance...
Thanks,,,kdt333

I'm using a cut-down version of Windows XP Pro (up to date w/ all hotfixes service packs etc.) and I'm trying to install an old Sidewinder Precision Pro Joystick

installing a sidewinder joystick is tricky as windows wants to auto-detect sidewinders, and doesn't recognize it when it is first plugged in.

I have the original CD which includes drivers and other utilities for the joystick, but i can't install those drivers as windows does not recognize the joystick is plugged in, 'add hardware' and 'add game controller' are no help at all.

add game controller' doesn't auto-detect, and there are no game devices at all in the add new hardware list.

Suggestions?

I have the drivers i just need windows to notice there is a new joystick connected so i can install them.

Answer:Installing a Joystick

Look in device manager to see if its reading the joystick as an unknown device. If it is then you can go from there. If its not, and you have a USB gamepad, make sure that USB port is working. If you have a gameport interface gamepad make sure that your gameport is enabled in BIOS.

I have a MS Sidewinder Pro 2USB joystick which I haven't used in years. Been sitting in a closet. But the new game called H.A.W.X. is coming out and I've been playing the demo.

At first, the joystick refused to be recongized by my system. (stats below) which is an Intel system. Either from the front or rear USB ports. If I plug the joystick into another computer here (AMD system) it is seen and works.

I've tried several times and have located the drivers on the internet. But when I plug in the joystick into either computer - its like the joystick is dead. Nothing shows up. No errors or anything - nada.

At one point, it did show up for a while on my intel computer (after I installed the drivers)... but as of now, nothing. The joystick looks as good as new. Its one of the better things made by MS in design in terms of function and feel. There is NOTHING on the market that compared to these old 2001~2004 joysticks.

From what I can see with google, the USB connection seems to die on these things. So I am guessing I'm going to have to buy a joystick.

I've looked at whats left on the market that I can buy.
Saitek: While customizable, these are flimsy - the trigger button is not comfortable... and breaks easily since I've owned one before I bought the sidewinder. Fairly low cost at about $20~25.

Logitech: Better feel, a bit large. Same design from 2003ish. Problem from reviews is that that they seem to stop functioning, even if stored for months... Read more

Hi. I have a couple old joysticks. I'd like to use one for flight simulators (FSX, and Sturmovik and stuff.)

I've tried the one I got at a thrift store and it seems to be going up. It's hard to explain. Like, to keep my plane level I have to be pulling it down somewhat or else it'll dive. I'm having a hard time choosing what to say... when I say it goes "up", I mean it does what physically pushing UP would do. It pushes the plane DOWN. So it's tiring to be constantly pulling the stick down just to keep level.

Can this happen to old joysticks? Does it mean it's worn out? It's an oldie, I think... It has a hat, twist, up down (whatever that is), speed throttle thing, a trigger, two buttons on the base, and four buttons on the head. (I'm really not a joystick expert.)
It's called "Wingman Extreme". I'm not sure but it might be Logitech. Maybe.

Would I be better trying to fix this or to use another, but seemingly worse one I got at a garage sale that seems to work alright?
It's a smaller, orange one that's very light and doesn't have the "twist" function. It's the "Saitek ST 90". It seems very much like a budget Joystick but some reviews I read said it might be fine for a beginner and is surprisingly decent. I'm DEFINITELY a beginner. I'll probably go on an "easy" level on FSX if there is one.

What happens is when I increase power to the throttle the 'plane' starts to rotate and goes round in complete circles! I have tried varous drivers and looked on the net for any info on this but cannot find anything. I have also re-installed the apps with no change so any help would be appreciated, even just a good newsgroup for these programs.

Hi,

I have been playing Aces High II, a WWII flight simulator online game for 3 years with my current PC. I originally played it with XP Home with no problems. This last year I upgraded to XP Pro. Currently have 1GB ram. I had my joystick setup a-ok until a few days ago. Mine is a Saitek AV8R-01, USB Plug and Play. I realized I never had loaded up the drivers off the CD, so I did. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Been kicking myself ever since.)

I cannot get the TEST phase of joy.cpl in Control Panel to calibrate it in Windows XP. The joystick is necessary to be calibrated 1st in Windows, then in Aces High II within the game program. I have a dead stick in AHII, some planes' cockpits the stick doesn't even appear.

Since, I uninstalled the Saitek program in Add/Remove Programs and also searched and removed all Saitek items I could find in SEARCH. When I go to "joy.cpl" in RUN, it takes me to Game Controllers in Control Panel and displays Saitek Aviator Stick Properties Test tab and there is no way to calibrate it there. I removed everything Saitek I could find and yet the Saitek Aviator Stick Properties is still there.

How do I get the Windows XP calibration utility to reappear, short of reinstalling Windows (ugh!) ?

I have spent several days in Google and other sources trying to find solution. I found guys with the similar problem, but nobody answered them with a solution.

Came across TechGuy.org through Google, searching out a differen... Read more

Answer:Cannot Calibrate Joystick

Found a solution to get my XP Restore to go back a week. In my Norton 360, under the SETTINGS dropdown is an item to uncheck in the right side column, bottom of list, titled: Tamper Protection. Uncheck that item for 15 minutes being off, allows Restore to function properly.

So, I get my joy.cpl back and the calibration wizard functions properly on the Windows side.

I still cannot get AHII http://www.hitechcreations.com/
to recognize my joystick.

Still working on the problem...

PCs are so much fun when they are working properly. Even more fun trying to get them to work properly in the 1st place! LOL

Question: joystick problems

hey, I've got a problem with my joystick, it's a Microsoft SideWidner Precision Pro. See, my little sister unplugged it from one of the USB ports one day and now when i plug it in and try to make it work, Windows never detects it. I've ran the hardware detection programs many times and and it never finds it. Any suggestions? any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:joystick problems

You might try uninstalling the software that came with it, reboot, then reinstall the software...that should get it back to where it can "redetect" it once again.

help!!!!! My son (and me) need some assistance.
We are computer illiterates and are now having a technical problem. He got a joystick for Christmas and we cannot get it to work with the game that we got it to go with. The stick has been installed and now it will not set up with the game. We have followed all of the directions even changing the settings for the controller after going to the game website and seeing if anyone reported difficulties. No luck. If anyone has any advice a computer illiterate can understand I would appreciate it.

Answer:joystick problems!!!!!

Not much of a gamer, but i wil offer some thought on the subject. First go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Gaming Options and make sure that it is installed and working correctly. Next start the game and go to Options or whatever setup path is used. If it is still not working, try removing the joystick and reinstalling it. Sorry i cannot be of any real help.

I have a broken joystick. in the Gaming Options window it says Not Connected...
This joystick stopped functioning when a bunch of my young cousins were playing MSFS2002... first it wouldn't turn to the left, so we tried recalibration, which didn't work... when we restarted the game, the stick wouldn't work at all, and surprise surprise, it was Not Connected... but I'm sure this time it wasn't the main cord being ripped apart (that's how my previous joystick broke, after a dozen of times falling from the table, the cord catching it in mid-air...) This stick has never fallen and has a long enough cord to be child-safe... The stick does receive power, cause a led lights up when I turn on the turbo switch (turbo makes it click a button at a fast rate when holding it down)
However, if I turn the joystick down (as in takeoff), the led goes off... when I push it forward (crashlanding), the led stays on... so I presume it's a contact problem, and maybe fixable...
I've tried opening the joystick, but there's one more screw left that simply won't come off... I've been trying to get it off so hard that the screwdriver has almost completely worn out the hole in the screw (that's an example of my english vocabulary...) Now i've managed to get it moving a bit, but when I turn it, at one point it just says click and falls back in... I guess I might have to open it by force, unless you have any tips... the difficulty is the sc... Read more

I am reimaging a lab of computers, Windows 95, each computer has a SoundBlaster card (some ISA and some PCI) Some of the machines had no problem recognizing and installing the drivers for the souund card. Others (no pattern I can detect) show only "gamepost joystick" under the sound, video and game controllers in device manager. If I remove the joystick and reboot, only the joystick is redetected. Some of these worked before I formated and reimaged them, but I have had this problem other places too. I have tried installing the audio directly from the CD and everything looks OK but the devices/drivers never show up in device manager. I'm fairly certain a new sound card would solve it but since these worked just a couple of days ago, was wondering if anyone had a remedy for me.

I have a HP760n computer with 512Ram. 1.8 Ghz and many of the new software out. Brand new computer. Anyway, when I went into the install folder and started installing, I have Windows XP home version, It went into about 3 steps of the installation and said that windows cannot complete the installation cause of an error. The joystick is logitech didigal extreme but it is 5 yrs. old. Do you have to have a joystick compatable for Windows XP? Please let me know before I go out and buy another one. I installed it 3 times already and no success, it keeps going to the same setup area and quits with an error message and exits the setup.

Answer:joystick not installing

The Game port is usually part of the Sound card. Go into Device Manager and check the status of it. You may need an updated sound driver. Go to the vendor's Website and check for the latest XP version.

The Wingman Extreme has a 15 pin connector and also comes with a adaptor to convert to USB. My computer is a Dell and it doesn't have a 15 pin game port by it does have two USB ports. Question: Joystick Conflict?

I have a Saitek ST220 Joystick that was working fine until recently. I had a new pc built and transferred some of my cards and my CD-RW drive to it from my old pc. All of a sudden when I was playing any of my Flight Sims the game would freeze, sometimes going back to normal and sometimes freezing my pc and I have to hard reboot. Origianlly I had the stick attached to the game port on my sound card, then I tried it through my USB port, but nothing fixed it. Tech support from Saitek guided me through some diferent setting and told me to download some updates to some of my drivers, nothing worked and they suggested sending them the stick for a replacement. When I transferred my CD-RW to the new PC, I didn't realize that I had to set my DVD-Rom as either slave or master and the CD-RW as the opposite, which was causing one or the other not being detected when my system was booting. Since I had corrected the problem I noticed the Joystick Problem has gone away, so I suspect. Could that have been the problem, or was this a coincidence?

Answer:Joystick Conflict?

More than likely, either while you were inside the case, something may have been bumped back into place....or that last final restart shuffled things/drivers to where they were happy.

I'd like to use my USB dock on the front of the machine but the stick isn't recognized when I plug it to the USB hub using an adapter. No surprise really. Is there anything I can do/install to get the USB controller to see the stick?
An extension cable would help too. How about a good source for wierd little cables like that.
I'd rather use USB tho.

It won't work if it's not a USB joystick.

I have a USb joystick (It is an simulator for R/C Airplanes)... I installed it normally, and it works fine, except that every time I plug it in or reboot Windows XP detects it as new hardware (A HID-Compliant Device) to be exact. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Josh

Answer:USB Joystick - detected over and over again

The first advice here would to examine the device manager to see if there are yellow
marks next to any usb devices. If any are found, right click the one or more indicated
to choose the update driver option. From there you would manually install the drivers
need for this device. The second would be to remove and reinstall the software.

With usb devices, the advice above has been found effective when Windows performs
only a partial install of the drivers where hangups like this are due to inactive drivers.

A while ago before we did a system recovery, we got a joystick. USB- Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2 Joystick. It worked. Those were the days....
Anyhoo. System recovery, blah blah blah. So when we go to install the joystick, We dont have the right drivers! (Why do recoverys let you delete drivers. god microsoft is stupid!) anyway! wrote down the name of the driver and downloaded it thru a google search site. it didnt work. oh well. 1 year later! System recovery (for absolutely no reason other than, mom i quote, "Its running to slow!" we defraged it and we had 90% of out drive space freed. So slow why...? 10% of memory used! stupid mom...).
so we have forgot the name of the driver and wanted to find it again, but we forgot how we found it. I checked and it says Gameport drivers are missing. So I kinda need thoes.
Could people zip em up and post them as an attatchment and include the source tag (C:\...) of where you found it? And also i know the actual driver from last year was a windows 95 thing.... So! When i figure out the actual driver, ill let you know of the name of it so people might be so nice as to repeat posting steps requested for the Gameport drivers for the win95 thing. Thankyou all that end up helping/posting helpfull thoughts!! And if it matters for this, my system spex are in my signature.

Question: Jumping Joystick

Be warned: I am an amateur working with the hardware component of computers so if I sound ignorant, I am! Anyway, we put all my sons games on a different computer and we just got a new sound card/port installed so my son could use a joystick on that computer. When I calibrated the joystick, the "X" jumped around in the box. When my son tried to fly (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004), he cannot get the planes to turn right. The joystick is a couple years old (Wingman Attack) but I know it works because it was just taken off another computer in the home and was heavily used with all previous versions of Flight Simulators, etc. Has anyone else had this problem? I would appreciate any help you could give me!

Question: Joystick as mouse?

Just like many of you I am on the computer all day long. I have come to hate the mouse but feel like there isn't a better option. I'm thinking of trying a standard joystick (not a game pad but an actual joystick) as a mouse. I've seen software that allows this to happen so I thought I'd check if any of you fine people have tried it and would or would not recommend it.

This is for a PC running windows2K

I have already tried and don't like the following devices:
- Roller balls, both top and side mounted
- Drawing/Pen pads. These are okay but the clicking buttons are always badly placed.
- The keyboard mounted red rubber TrackPoint thing is the worst computer related invention ever.
- The touch pad that is used on every laptop these days is the second worst.

If you have other suggestions not listed above I'd be open to any!

Thanks!

Now, I know they are connected. I can see them connected. I have tried doing an 'update drivers' with the win98 cd, no joy. I have tried joysticks with their own software, no joy. There is no question mark on HID-compliant device under device manager. I have no hardware or software conflicts, and all it says is 'this device is working properly'.

BUT IT ISNT!!!!!

IRQ is fine, on 9, not changeable. I have an integrated Crystal Sound Fusion sound card, it must be a driver problem of some kind, but god only knows what. BIOS is on automatic system selection, USB enabled..........

Please, please, somebody out there must be able to help me. The latest joystick I've tried (not that I think it makes much difference) is the Genius Flight 2000 f-23.

Fingers crossed
