X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

Question: X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

I currently have an X60 and have never had a single issue. However I was recently infected with a Trojan, and after removing it with a reputable program, the keyboard and trackpoint mouse have stopped working. When I get the windows login screen, the trackpoint works fine, but the second I press any key, both keyboard and mouse become totally frozen. I can still use a USB keyboard and mouse with no issue at, but that is the only way. Any ideas as to how I can get them back up and working? Clearly, they (at least the mouse) are not totally fried b/c it works fine before I touch the keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, JT

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: X60 keyboard and trackpoint stopped working; only usb keyboard/mouse work

SOLVED! I simply had to update the drivers in the device manager. For some reason they were corrupt and it could not load them. Simple fix, just took too much thought and digging to find solution.

Hi all,I know this isn't exactly linked to the model computer I own, but I thought the experts might be able to offer some advice. Answer:Keyboard and trackpoint stopped working

Sounds like you damaged a Windows system file or device driver.    I'd run SFC  /SCANNOW to check the system files.   You may need to boot in safe mode, off another drive or try attaching a different keyboard/mouse.  I'd also reinstall the drivers for the keyboard/mouse.  Message Edited by ctoys on 08-16-2008 06:16 PM

(IT'S NOT A LAPTOP. USING WINDOWS 8.1)
I restarted my computer and now all of my USB ports don't work on the desktop, but they still work in BIOS, and I can access the F2 and F8 menus. I tried restoring an old version of windows but it gives me an error. And also, now the Wi-Fi and the sound displays with a red cross near their icon.

-I tried disabling my XHCI, it didn't do anything.

-I even tried ps/2 port, it didn't work either.

-I tried restoring an older version of my computer it didn't work and gave me an x800 error every time on every backup I had. (I had around 4)
My keyboard and mouse are in working conditions, USB still give out power. Please help, I've been having this problem for five days now, I need my computer for work. Please.

What anti-virus program are you using? Have you run a full scan?
Also download and scan with Malwarebytes Anti Malware (free version), see if anything is found.

Test memory and hard drive:

Download Memtest86+ (you want the 2nd one Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)). Unzip it then create a CD from the iso file using your CD burning software. There is a good freeware burner called ImgBurn which will do this easily.

DO NOT burn the .iso file directly to CD. It must be used as input to a program that knows what to do with it, like the one I mentioned above.

You can do this on any computer that has a working CD Burner.

You can also use a Flash drive instead of a CD.

Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) *NEW!*.
Unzip and run Memtest86+ USB Installer.exe.
It will format the flash drive if you tell it to. I used a small, 16MB flash drive and it had 8.5GB left when done.

Boot the CD or Flash drive and run Memtest86+ for at least 3 complete passes unless it shows errors sooner than that. An overnight run is even better.

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

I went to trouble shoot the problem, i have basic computer knowledge, but I see nothing I can do. I switched out both the keyboard in the mouse with others, they will also not work. WDF, my mouse and keyboard suddenly stopped working in BF2. I can navigate the menus and stuff, but as soon as the game starts, my mouse and keyboard stop working in-game. The keyboard isn't frozen, the Num Lock light still turns on and off. When I ALT+Tab to windows, both start working again. The game isn't frozen either, Planes are flying by, I can see things moving, but I can't choose my starting weapon...

ESC doesn't work in-game either, if it did, it would bring up a menu.

The only hardware change that I've made has been to add the sound card and it's drivers.

Answer:WDF, Mouse and Keyboard stopped working in BF2.

OMFG, I just noticed why. All my controls in the game were deleted for some ****ing reason. I have to reset all of them one by one!

What the hell could have caused this? I didn't delete anything!

Hi all, this is my first time posting on this board and itís probably a total newbie question but here goes; I wanted to add a second hard drive to my pc but there wasnít an available SATA connection on my motherboard so I purchased a pci-e card that allowed me to add another pair of sata connections, I installed the card powered on and added the drivers and then everything was fine. Now I powered my computer back on and the usb mouse and keyboard doesnít work at all, not sure what is happening, does anybody have any ideas why this would happen? The only other thing plugged into a usb that is working is a wifi stick.

What are the specs of your current system? Do you have a very high video card but low Power supply wattage?

I agree that the keyboard and mouse only use a very low watt consumption on your PSU. But if you have maxed out your PSU due to the high specs you are using, then definitely the external USB devices will not work as they are just a second priority for the power consumption.

If you have a low spec system then obviously, this is a compatibility issue with your mouse and keyboard. Let me know your thoughts.

right after I updated my motherboard's chipset driver. (Intel 865 I believe)

So... to start... during BIOS and the computer's startup, my keyboard and mouse work, but once I hit the Windows loading bar, they both turn off, and I can't log in.

- I have tried plugging them into different slots, and it does not work.
- I have tried a non-USB keyboard, it worked fine. (Haven't tested a mouse, but I'm sure it would work too.)
- I have an expansion card with five USB slots on it, when I plug the mouse/keyboard into that, they don't even flash during the startup.
- I have tried booting into safe mode, they don't work there either.

I may be forgetting something, but hopefully this helps you rule out some possibilities.

Any questions or suggestions, please ask or comment.

Thanks.

I know my BIOS has a setting for a USB keyboard. Make sure (if you have it) that it is yes.

Have you tried unplugging the USB and replugging it? While it is running, that is. Sometimes at boot my mouse won't work and I have to unplug/replug it.

Hi.My L520 did overheat and turned off by it self.Afterwards when i started the laptop botb mouse and keyboard didnt work.I've tried restarting, go into safe mode. But none working. I need help i cant use my laptop and its driving me crazy!

Answer:Keyboard and mouse stopped working

 Hi Okker,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums! I'm really sorry to hear that your Lenovo L520 overheated and turned off by itself and after that the keyboard and mouse stopped working.

I would like to thank you for the effort you have taken to get into safe mode and restarting the system.

Since you got into Safe mode, it is clear that system works fine on an external keyboard. Please try to get into BIOS mode and see if the keyboard is working there. Tap F1 key while system shows the Lenovo logo to get into BIOS.

1. If you are able to use the keyboard in BIOS, it could be a software issue. I would recommend in that case to do a System Restore which will revert the settings in your system to a previous time.
2. If keyboard doesn?t respond in BIOS as well, I strongly suggest you to contact our technical support for assistance.

Hi there,My Nephew left his PC BASE unit with me whilst on holiday. When he took it home last week and connected it up the Mouse and Keyboard are not working. They are colour coded connections so I know he has them correctly connected. However, instead of telephoning me about them not working he pressed a number of keys on the keyboard and now even the numerical lock key light will not even turn off.I am going to have a look at it tomorrow but wondered if anyone has had this problem at all.The PC is a Sony machine with Windows XP. Out of nowhere this morning, the keyboard and mouse stopped working. I noticed the keyboard first when nothing happened when I typed. I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Then I noticed the mouse not moving and the keyboard didn't come back either. So I dug out a USB keyboard, plugged that in, and used that to close all the open programs and restart the computer. I didn't want to hold down the power button and I wanted to know that it wasn't the computer that was frozen, just the mouse and keyboard. It restarted just fine, recognized the mouse and keyboard and now everything is back to normal, but I'm wondering why it happened in the first place and if it's likely to happen again, how can I prevent it? Thank you.

Ok ive got another laptop another fault

its a Samsung R510,
Intel Core Duo2
Microsoft Windows Vista 32bit

Today the laptop booted and i couldnt type my password or move the cursor, i plugged in a usb mouse and i was able to move the cursor. i got the on screen keyboard up and logged in.

Then i went to Device Manager, both the keyboard and mouse have the Exclamation mark next to them. So i figure somethings gone wrong with the driver. (Vista may have auto updated since last turn on)

Vista scanned the net and said my drivers were up to date. i then uninstalled and rebooted, with the same outcome. So i went to Samsung
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/d...510-FAADUK&prd_mdl_name=NP-R510&srchword=R510

i downloaded the driver for Vista "touchpad" unzipped and run setup.exe. it then said it updated the pointer device and restarted, but i still have the same fault. Does anyone know whats happened and how to get it back.

Just for extra info, i also have Linux Mint Julia on this laptop and ive booted this up and everything works ok, god i hate vista lol.

I have a PC with a K6-2 400mhz CPU on a Biostar M5ALA motherboard with a ALi chipset, 128mb of RAM, 10.2 GB HD running Windows ME. Today I opened up the case & added 128mb more of RAM, made sure that worked, then added a new video-card. After I installed the new video-card, with the case still off, I tested it & everything worked okay.

So I unplugged everything, put the case back on, & hooked everything back up. I had trouble getting the keyboard to plug in, but it went it. I turned the system back on & found that both the keyboard & the mouse had stopped working.

I shut it down & removed both, found that the keyboard pins were bent. Mouse pins were fine. I had put the keyboard plug into the correct socket, too. So I went to the store & bought a new keyboard & mouse, brought them both home, installed them---and they didn't work. Again, I made sure that both the keyboard & the mouse were plugged into the correct sockets.

The mouse was a USB/serial port mouse, so I plugged it into a USB port instead--it worked. Under Device Manager, I could see the system registering a keyboard. No yellow exclamation points. Everything looked normal.

So I borrowed a working keyboard from my neighbor and tried it--nothing. So I used the Start-Up disk to boot into DOS & the keyboard still didn't work, nor did the mouse.

So I shut down, removed the new RAM I had installed, started it up again after taking the Start-Up disk out, and while it c... Read more

Just now my mouse and keyboard randomly stopped working on my desktop. It was running perfectly fine then all I heard was the USB disconnect sound and all function in both the keyboard and mouse stopped. When I start my computer the lights on my mouse and keyboard briefly come on then turn off when I'm on the welcome screen.

Weird thing is that they both work on my brothers computer but when I try my brothers keyboard and mouse they don't work on my computer.

I'm also running windows 10 if that matters.

Hello everyone. I own a Compaq Presario CQ50-110US Notebook Computer and it seems as if the onboard keyboard/mouse have just suddenly stopped working. I have ofcourse tried rebooting and a rollback and it doesn't help. The keyboard and mouse will occasionally work and if I plug a USB Keyboard/mouse in then it all works fine. It's odd how it happened because I didn't really do anything or install anything new to my computer. On a related know around the same time my keyboard/mouse stopped working when I plug my USB keyboard in whenever I press "Caps" button my computer locks up for about 5 seconds, the more I press it the longer it stays locked up, I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my other issue but they did start happening at the same time. I haven't spilled anything on my onboard keyboard or dropped it or anything remotely like that. I just came back Christmas night and bam it wasn't working. Thank you for any help in advance!

Hopefully, someone can answer this question, as I've had no luck so far.  Some specifics first:* I have a Dell Dimension 4550* Windows XP* Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 4000 (Wireless keyboard and mouse)The problem is that I had to reboot my computer after a software update. Unfortunately, it was at this point that my keyboard and mouse stopped working. Some solutions that I tried:* Rebooting the computer* Shutting down the computer, unplugging the wireless receiver and plugging in a  PS/2 mouse and keyboard.* Taking apart the computer to blow the dust out of the inside* Starting the computer in safe mode. The keyboard works until I get to this screen:http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ss/safemodecpxp_4.htm* Reinstalling Windows isn't possible because the mouse and keyboard don't workAny other suggestions would be appreciated. I'm kind of at a loss and I haven't found an answer anywhere else.

I'm helping a friend with his laptop because since only a few days ago, the keyboard and mouse stopped working. I had him reboot it a few times but no effect.
I brought over a live linux CD and booted off of that, the touchpad mouse and keyboard worked perfectly.

So I'm guessing there is something with Windows that is stopping it from working. Laptop running Vista Home

Been searching the net and forums but haven't found a solid fix for this.

I'm on Windows XP Service Pack 2 I believe.

My computer was running fine last night. I get up to grab a drink, come back to find my keyboard and mouse are both no longer working. I started freaking out thinking there was something wrong with my computer, but had no idea what to do. After a few hours I decided to test my keyboard and mouse on another computer to make sure which was not working properly - my computer or the keyboard and mouse - and they weren't working on the other computer either.

I'm just posting here to make sure my assumptions are or are not correct: that it's not my computer, but by some extremely rare chance of coicidince, my keyboard and mouse just stopped working at the same time. Any input is much appreciated.

I left my computer on for about half an hour whilst I went downstairs to do something , when I came back I had found my monitor had turned off and the power button light for it was flashing. The computer was still on but it hadn't slept. I'm not sure of the settings I had it set to but I tried to wake it by moving the mouse and pressing the keyboard however it still didn't respond so I turned it off manually by holding the power button.

When I turned it on again , the same thing happened , the mouse and keyboard were unresponsive and the monitor light kept flashing . I thought at first it was just my mouse so I unplugged it and tried a different port , still didn't work. I tried every available port on my computer and the mouse didn't work . I tried it on another computer and the mice and keyboard worked there so I knew it was a problem with my PC.

I unplugged everything , removed the cover on my case and pretty much cleared the dust out using my air blower, turned on the comp again and the fans were running fine , GPu fan was running and so were the other fans. In desperate need of some help for my Dell PC running windows XP. I recently decided to update my game controller so went into control panel to remove my old Saitek Cyborg rumble pad. It proceeded to remove all the drivers but came up with an error at 99% and windows froze (sorry, cant remember what the error message said). I tried removing the pad from the USB port but due to the mass of jumbled cables i pulled the mouse out 1st (possibly the root of my problem). Anyhow, after plugging them all back in windows was still frozen so I had to hard reset. After booting up again the mouse and keyboard would not work. Windows proceeded to find new hardware for Dell USB mouse/keyboard etc but after each one it also finds new 'USB Human Interface Device' and an 'add new hardware wizard' opens up for the USB HID. I cant get beyond this point as the mouse/keyboard are still inactive so im unable to make any selections. Without use of a mouse im completely at a loss what to do? Im able to get into BIOS setup and make selections with the keyboard but once windows loads up the mouse and keyboard stop working and the install new hardware wizard opens up for a USB Human Interface device.

Seems like ive knocked out the USB drivers?? Heeelp

I have a just over one year old (~14 months) Dell Inspiron 17 laptop with Win 8.1 (no touch) and of course it's out of warranty. The mouse simply stopped working, no cursor. I was able to use the touchpad but then that quit too in quick order.
I spent hours searching here and the interweb looking for possible fixes, so far no luck.
The worst of the issue is now I can't get past the splash screen to the login screen to access the repair/restore functions in Windows.
How do I access these when I can't even login to the computer?

Answer:Mouse stopped working, then touchpad, then keyboard

I called Dell and they want almost $300 to send it back so they can 'look at it'!

Hello, I have a Horizon 2E AIO that is just about 2 years old. It came with a wireless mouse and keyboard combo, SK-8861, which have an integrated dongle within the body of the machine (IE, no user-inserted USB dongles). It runs Windows 8.1. About half an hour ago, both of these devices stopped responding, with no apparent provocation or reason. I have replaced the batteries in both devices, and I have attempted the pairing procedures with both devices multiple times, but they are still unresponsive. How can I restore functionality to these devices? Currently stuck using touchscreen only. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I switched it back on and found that neither the wireless mouse or the wireless keyboard functions, despite working perfectly for the last seven years. Batteries in both have been replaced with brand new ones and the rollers in the mouse have been checked for fluff etc. Connecting WIRED mouse and keyboard and everything functions as it should. Connecting the wireless mouse up again -the wireless receiver blinks at every movement of the mouse but there is no movement of the cursor on the screen. Could this be the drivers? Any suggestions gratefully received as I do not wish to advertise something that it is not.

Hi,

the issue i am facing--- yesterday my laptop got shutdown because of power loss after that

- on booting win 7 i got a BSoD bad_system_config error three times then
- On my fourth attempt the win7 os started to boot again but the keyboard and mouse were no longer working (both external usb and internal).

My system details--------

asus k53sv laptop with

1. i5 processor 2. 8gb ddr2 ram(2sticks of 4gb) 3. geforce gt540 graphics card 4. 750gb seagate hdd(with 4 partitions(199gb*2 ,288gb*1,10gb*1)

5. 3usb ports(1*usb 3.0 , 2*usb2.0)

I have a dual boot config so Both 199gb partitions have os namely winxp pro and win 7 pro.

WHAT I HAVE TRIED

1. Safe mode does not work i.e keyboard mouse do not work(both usb external and internal do not work)

2.win 7 repair found no errors

3.Do not have a Restore point so could not restore it to previous working condition.

4.Tried to shut down laptop remove battery and power and press power button for 20 -25 second release the button then put everything back again..

5.Done online spyware bot scan,Malwarebytes scan, avast free scan.(from win xp)

OBSERVATIONS

1.keyboard mouse work completely fine in BIOS and in win xp.

2.The keyboard light goes off as soon as the win 7 welcome screen is shown.

3.Initially in the second try win 7 os was detecting external keyboard showed installing devices notification but then did nothing.

It has happened four times now, at seemingly random times.

I will be using the computer for a few hours, and the mouse & keyboard will stop working. The lights on my keyboard (capslock, numlock, scroll lock) will dimly flicker, but that is the only sign I have they are plugged in. I have been using this mouse and keyboard with this computer for well over a year without this issue.

I've tried different usb ports. The only way I have been able to fix it is pressing the power button on my case.

Since yesterday, I have scanned for virus, spyware, malware. Updated BIOS usb drivers, and windows updates. It has happened since I have done that.

My bios has these USB settings: USB Controllers, USB Legacy Function, USB Storage Function, R_USB30 Controller, F_USB30 Controller. All of which are currently enabled.

Okay, I'll tell you about this mysterious **** that just occured to me, and I am very worried about it since I am broke.

I have a Steelseries Shift keyboard and a Steelseries Kinzu V2 mouse.
My motherboard is a MSI 760GM-E51.

Today when I was just casual stuff I do at my PC, surfing at the internet, playing some games the keyboard started spazzing out, when I was typing in Chrome windows started popping up, when I typed the letter s it added a + sign before it.

After a while, I decided to reinstall my steelseries mouse firmware, it started updating.
The keyboard got finished, at the mouse it got stuck at 46% for several minutes so I just restarted my computer.

My keyboard and mouse had stopped working, I tried to access the bios, didn't work, I tried everything and my mouse just stopped working too.

What the hell can this problem be?
I never had anything this weird happen to me, I wish someone could try to come with a soloution ASAP.

Hi there, I am using a Lenovo Y50 laptop and it has worked great for me for close to a year. However, things took and unexpected turn for the worst today. My keyboard and mouse just stopped working, abruptly. This occurred after a Windows update earlier today. Now I get a 'Code 10' Error message on the Device Manager for the 'Standard PS/2 Keyboard' and the 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse' The code reads the following in full for both: This device cannot start. (Code 10)Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API. Please let me know what the next step to take is. P.S. I've tried updating the drivers and have restated countless times. Thank you in advance!

Can you boot in via Safe Mode (F8)...this may load the correct drivers for your peripherals as it sounds like they've gone in Vista.

I tried replacing the batteries and then I connected them to another computer and they worked fine. I switched USB ports. Still the same on my PC. Ive searched high and low for some answers. Does anyone have any ideas? I am running XP. Thank you for your time.

All,

Background: A few days ago I decided to try to clean up my Dell Studio XPS 7100 a bit by going through and deleting files using the Disc cleanup. I selected all categories listed (to my detriment as it apparently included my previous Restore Points) and also did a little disc de-fragmenting. After all was said and done, my computer decided to do some Windows updates as I shut it down for the night before it completely turned off.

The Problem: The next day I booted up, the mouse (Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical) light on the bottom turned on when the BIOS was up and then shut off when Windows began loading (normal) but did not turn back on again when it came to my login/password screen (not normal). Also, my keyboard (factory Dell) was non-functional. Both are USB. I had to do a hard reset (held the button down for 5 seconds) and tried it again, but to no avail.

What I tried:

First I attempted to boot in "Safe Mode" but this didn't change anything. Still, both the keyboard and mouse did not respond.
I attempted plugging both peripherals into different USB ports, but to no avail. Every time my computer would turn on, the light on my mouse turned on, and then shut off as Windows loaded up and would no longer respond.
I tried using a different mouse (only have one keyboard) but it also didn't register.
I tried the Restore to "Last Known Operating" status (or something like that) from the BIOS, it only listed the previous day's Windows Updates and no... Read more

I have a laptop Advent 7088, and it appears to have lost all input functions. Turning the computer on works fine, but neither mouse or keyboard functions. The laptop loads to Windows XP login screen, but again, neither the mouse or keyboard functions. I have tried plugging in a USB keyboard and mouse and still nothing. There is not PS2 port for normal keyboards or mice. Also which I find strange is, althought the option is there, I can not enter the bios, nor will any function key work to allow me access to other menus. Even with the USB keyboard in, I still cannot gain access to the bios or anything. I have tried resitting the ribbon cables for both the onboard mouse and keyboard. I have attempted to do what various other people have suggested. but seem to come up with nothing. Can anyone help at all?

I have always used an IBM lap with a trackpoint mouse (that small little nub above the "B" key).

I purchased a similar keyboard for my desktop (IBM part #84H8566) and have been relatively happy with it. Plugged into the back of the computer, it takes up both PS/2 ports (for the keyboard, itself, and the mouse).

My question is this: I want to keep using my keyboard, but I'd like to add an external trackball and mouse (probably a Microsoft Intellipoint or a Logitech). I particularly want the ability to have a scroll wheel.

Does anyone out there know if there is any way to add this trackball/mouse and avoid a software conflict as I go from trackpoint/keyboard to trackball/mouse?

And....if no one out there has an answer, do you have a tech support number at IBM I could call (with or without a $$$ tech charge). I've been all over IBM's site and I can't find a "non-subscription" one-time tech number to call.

Thanks much !!

Just setting up a new computer. Have a logitech receiver and wireless mouse + keyboard ... batteries in both are good (I checked with voltmeter).

So everything is fine and I'm setting up windows. I go to local security policy to disable the administrator account and then go to rename it, and find out my keys aren't working!! But for some odd reason, the shortcut buttons to calculator and internet explorer work just fine... just none of the keys (numbers or letters) work. cntrl alt del doesn't work.

So I try a keyboard that is from a working computer, and that won't work either. I'm really stumped. The USB ports should be fine as the MOUSE works fine (the wireless mouse and also other mouses work fine). The motherboard is brand new.
The working keyboard I tested doesn't seem to be even getting power on this new computer. Not sure why. I can't even get into the BIOS cause the keyboard doesn't work!

As I wrote in the title, my Shift and Alt keys stopped working for keyboard shortcuts. However, the Shift key still works when capitalizing letters.

I've been dealing with this problem off/on for the past two weeks and haven't been able to figure it out. I've gone into Ease of Access features and turned on/off all of the available options (Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, Filter Keys). I've pressed Shift for 8 seconds, and pressed it 5 times, and still haven't been able to correct it.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

Possibly helpful additional information:
I've got a Spanish/Latin American keyboard layout installed in addition to the US English keyboard layout. I toggle back and forth with Left Alt + Shift (which is how I noticed my Shift key stopped working).
I play a game whose controls rely on a lot of Shift key pressing and holding.

When was the last time you used a can of air cleaner on the keyboard? If it isn't from contact wear often keyboards tend to get loaded up with dust and debris!

One example of that is having any snacks onhand around a pc where little bits get passed along from your fingers onto and under the keys themselves. Keyboards are known to get loaded up fast with any foods present!

It sounds like a flakey keyboard. If it is still in warranty Lenovo will send you one for free. If not they are not very expensive and they are easy to replace. If you want to tear it down you will need the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

While probably dusting the keyboard off, I noticed it just stopped working. I am typing this using an external Dell USB keyboard attached to the laptop.I tried every thing by the websites , manuals, commensense, pcdoctors and non of the keys on the primary keyboard will work.Even the Ctrl+Alt+Del won't work. No NumLock, No sceenlock, No caps lock - nothing. Is there any hidden key combination which renders a keyboard totally inactive?I doubt that dusting with a feather could do it. Thanking in anticipation.KS

Answer:KEYBOARD STOPPED WORKING, AN EXTERNAL USB KEYBOARD DOES

Doubt it's a key combination.Case is about disconnected wire of it - happens to be under the keyboard. It's a pity you didn't mention the model of laptop. But, however, you can find a manual on how to disassembly it on lenovoservicetraining.com

I've had my desktop for a few years and never had a problem.  Just recently, it has started showing a Keyboard Error message on a black screen when I boot it up.  The wireless keyboard and mouse do not work, although it appears to boot up correctly.  Since I have a password on my computer, I cannot log in or do anything.  When this happens, I've rebooted 2-3 times, and it the keyboard and mouse will finally start working.  I have moved the toggle to different USB ports and this does not appear to make a difference.  How do I prevent this from happening?

Dear Dell community,
the E7440/E7420 (and I think many others) has keyboards with (e.g. 04W6PV 08PP00) or without trackpoint (e.g. . RXKD2 0RXKD2)
Subsequently the upper mousebuttons (A12AN5) can/should be removed (which is possible).
However, then I would need another keyboard trim covering the space where the upper mousebuttons have been.
I haven't found any different keyboard trim than 29FWC 029FWC (the one with a recess for the upper mouse buttons). I also didn't find a "filler" for the upper mouse buttons.
A trackpoint-less keyboard can be installed in a laptop with the upper mouse buttons still in place, but it's rather tight and the mouse buttons cannot be pushed properly any more, so should be disconnected.
How do I properly convert a trackpoint-enabled laptop to a trackpoint-less one?
kind regards

On my laptop Satellite L20 not working keyboard and touchpad, but keyboard work in BIOS, USB-ports also not working (USB mouse).

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

Long story short, someone spilled liquid on my keyboard. I took it apart, removed the keyboard, soaked it in a water (with a tiny bit of hand soap) solution to clean it. Let it dry for 5 days. Reinstalled the keyboard and neither the keyboard or trackpoint work at all. The funny thing is the trackpad below the keyboard doesn't work either, yet I never removed it because it is a seperate entity and is not even connected to the keyboard so I have no idea why that would not work either. I have looked all around the motherboard for any signs of the liquid on it and its clean as a whistle so I am confused why at the very least the trackpad does not work. A usb keybard and mouse work fine, and when I am in windows and I removed the HID compliant keyboard and re-scan it finds the HID compliant keyboard again so it knows its there. What else can I try?

Upon starting a T61 (6463) computer, the TouchPad, TrackPoint and keyboard are disabled aprox. 1 out of 3 times.  Two out of three times the computer will work normally. When TouchPad and Trackpoint are not working a USB-connected mouse will work normally 100% of the time. I will be indebted for suggestions about how to get rid of this problem.

Is it a used computer if it is then its gonna need new components if you search on let's say amazon you'll find everything you need a new keyboard will well put you in 100$ and the track point repair is gonna be around 40-60$ I had the same problem...

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...
Clean Windows 10 Pro install is done 5 times.Used the  DELL Command Update to install all drivers and patches.Issues keep existing...

Answer:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

I spilled something on the internal keyboard of my R61i, and reinstalled a new keyboard today.  The keyboard works fine; the trackpoint is not working, and doesn't show up on the device manager either.  When the keyboard broke, I uninstalled the keyboard and the mouse in device manager because keys were stuck and I couldn't use an external keyboard/mouse effectively without uninstalling the faulty internal ones.  When I installed the new keyboard today, the keyboard automatically started working when I turned the computer back on and shows up in device manager and is working fine; the trackpoint, not so much.  How do I reinstall the trackpoint if the computer isn't recognizing it?  is this possibly a software program, or is the new keyboard mouse faulty?  any suggestions?  have restarted multiple times and scanned for hardware; I have also tried downloading things that look like they might be the right drivers, but I'm not sure how to reinstall the trackpoint if windows doesn't see it.

I am trying to help a neighbor sort out a nasty problem. His computer was working just fine and recently the keyboard stopped working. The mouse still works properly. Hooking up a USB keyboard did nothing to fix the problem and also did not work. I tried reinstalling Windows on the notebook, when booting Windows 8 allowed me to type in the username password etc.  but when continuing to boot to the desktop Windows the keyboard is no longer available i.e. does not work at all.  i.e., right click and try to rename an Icon or click on Internet Explorer and try to type in a URL the keyboard does not work. I found numerous sites (the HP forum and other sites) on the Internet encountering a similar problem and none of the so-called solutions I found worked to resolve the problem. I have tried deleting the keyboard driver through device manager, re-booting etc. I tried suggested registry changes, nothing seems to work. There must be a rational solution to this problem but it is beyond me. I might add that when Windows boots up I am able to type in the user's password so the keyboard does appear to be working until Windows actually goes to the desktop and then nothing works on the keyboard.  Also when doing a cold boot pressing the ESC, F9 etc. work to allow me to enter the BIOS so it does not seem like the keyboard hardware is at fault, it has to be something with a Windows 8 setting on boot up to the desktop.

[SOLVED] KEYBOARD OR MOUSE OR CD-ROM DRIVE NO LONGER RESPONDING AFTER BOOT
Error:
?Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) {Unable to Load Device Driver}
%hs device driver could not be loaded. Error Status was 0x%x?

SECTION 1. Symptoms

When you start your computer, you notice (with a lot of frustration) that the keyboard or the mouse or the CD-ROM drive or maybe the audio device stopped responding. And that happened for no apparent reason.

If you can access the Device Manager, you see a yellow triangle on the device name.
If you try to update the driver, disable, re-enable, uninstall/reinstall the driver, nothing works.

If you restart the system from a boot DVD, you get into the WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), which is a sort of basic Windows allowing you to perform simple operations, such as re-starting in Safe Mode or repairing the system. Funnily, the keyboard, the mouse or the CD-ROM will work in this environment. Once you want to load the full system normally, you see that the symptoms persist.

SECTION 2. Virtual Keyboard and Virtual Mouse

To try the solutions presented here, you must have at least either the keyboard or the mouse working. If neither works, there still is hope.

If neither works, it probably means they are both on USB ports and the ?Human Interface Devices/USB Input Device? series are probably the faulty drivers. Anothe... Read more

Hello Sorin86! I have the same problem as you had. Last year I had this problem with WINXP. After several (unsuccessful) checks I bought a new Computer, new System (WIN8.1) and everything was fine till 2 weeks ago when the same thing appeared: cdrom.sys, hidclass.sys and hdaudio.sys is changed (?'s at the end!!!). I replaced these 3 files with the correct ones-it worked. I made system checks with three virus and antimalware programs: All clean. Yesterday the problem occures again! I have just a few shareware programs on the computer-all other softwase is original microsoft software. One of them is photofiltre. There are entries in some forums where it is said, that this can be critical. Have you found out, what program has changed your files? Perhaps That could help me...

Hi,

On my win7 64bit Thinkpad x230i I can no longer type with either the onboard or external keyboards.  The onboard mouse does not work either.  The only thing that does work is an external USB mouse.

So far I have tried to reinstall the Synaptics drivers from Lenovo, reinstall USB drivers from Lenovo, download a BIOS update, and update Logitech setpoint. None of those worked.

Also, when I go to Device Manager and I right click on the mouse and keyboards it says that I have the most up-to-date drivers.  I tried to do a System Restore, but Windows says that I do not have have any restore points created.

Is my only option to reinstall windows?

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Onboard keyboard, onboard mouse, and external keyboard do not work--please help

I would go into Device Manager...uninstall the native mouse and keyboard drivers...and then reboot the system.  Those drivers should automatically reinstall with (hopefully) undamaged new drivers that return original functionality.

Not sure if this is related. Flash keeps crashing. Any ideas whats wrong? Windows 7 pro. Asus desktop. This occurs on Firefox, Chrome and IE. This seemed to start after Microsoft update and Flash updates

Answer:Mouse scroll and keyboard stop working until left click of mouse

Hello mpmckee,

First run Antivirus, Malware, and Spyware scans. Remove anything the programs find.

Note: if you need some suggestions on which tools to use, let me know.

Afterwards, test functionally of mouse and keyboard.

If no change, run System Restore, choose a Restore point before the issue started.

Again test behavior of mouse and keyboard.

If the issue has been resolved, go ahead and reinstall windows Updates.

I have been using computers for over 25 years now, and I have never run across a problem like this. Backstory: I built my current PC about a year ago. Everything worked perfectly until about 5 days ago. At that point, it needed to restart. I restarted it, and upon boot neither the mouse or keyboard would respond. I tried a different mouse and keyboard, they did not work either. I tried both of the mice and keyboards with another PC, and they worked fine. This absolutely rules out the problem being the inputs. Then, I noticed that the mouse and keyboard do work in BIOS. However, after exiting BIOS and booting, they stop responding altogether. I have gone into system recovery countless times and tried literally every recovery option listed, to no avail. Any suggestions to help would be GREATLY appreciated. For the past 5 days I have literally had a $3000 paperweight.

Answer:Mouse/Keyboard work in BIOS, they do not work once computer boots

Hi JamesKBoyd. Welcome to the Tenforums @JamesKBoyd

Any chance you can boot to Advance Startup menu and invoke System restore (assuming your inputs work in this mode.)

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

To get this process started you need two failed start ups. Power on, see spinning dots, hold power key until machine powers off. Repeat. On third start up Windows will detect the two failed attempts and start the menu.

I assume when you boot all other USB devices are disconnected (not that you should have to do this normally but while testing).

You will want to look into installing and using a tool like Macrium Reflect, free, reliable and very handy in situations like this.

This is really a doozie, I have a Dell Comp. and I am not real happy about that. Any way, I had a problem with my C D Burner so I called Dell it cost me 50 bucks to have them not fix it... I ended up buying a new Burner but before I did that the guy I was on the phone with had asked me if I wanted to purchase a extended warranty for a $150.00 I told him no, so he had me download this program that allows a Dell Assoc. to enter your computer and try to fix the problem well he couldn't fix it so I ordered a new one, and at this point my Key Board was working fine and had always been working with no problems what so ever. That night after being on the comp. and phone with the guy from Dell, I went to use my Key Board and nothing, I tried another key board and nothing, I tried my key board on another comp. and it works fine . I have tried to plug it in other USB ports and nothing. What really doesn't make sence is the key board works in the Bios. I called Dell and told them the whole story and they said it was a software issue and if I wanted to pay $140.00 they would fix it, I kind of told them where to go, cause it was working fine until there guy was all over in my comp.doing who knows what. I'm hoping some one knows what I can do without having to go through Dell. To anyone who cares about GOOD Customer Service then don't buy a Dell. Also if your wondering how I typed this I am using the key board in Accessibility in Win. XP not a bad option but not as good... Read more

Dear all,
These (MJU7NHY6) keys in my laptop dell (Inspiron 11-3000 series) keyboard stopped working this May 13. They wouldn’t function unless pressed so hard. I bought laptop last year and it's new.
The onscreen keyboard is working fine. I updated the keyboards driver but it didn’t help. I’m not aware of any liquid that may have spilled over the keyboard. Maintenance shops where I'm seem they can’t help. Some said would give it a try and remove the keyboard to see if they can identify and solve the problem but said that there’s a chance it may screw up the whole keyboard. Please advise what to do. Enclosed is a snapshot of the keys in questions.
I appreciate your advice.

Goodday Gurus!!!

I have just started up my Sony vaio desktop. The keyboard works in bios, but when i access windows xp, it stops working. I plug it into another usb ports, while windows was adding in drivers such as the "USB Human Interface Device", the keyboard was working. After windows finishes adding in the drivers, the keyboard stopped working. My mouse is working though. I access device manager, systems. and I see that the USB Human Interface driver for the keyboard is there, but under the keyboard category, it doesn't show any keyboard installed. I tried another keyboard, same case. Anybody any ideas?

Oh one more thing, when i ran my ubuntu O/S, it works for the keyboard and mouse.

Hope to hear from someone!

Thanks!

Answer:Keyboard stopped working!

Is there a driver for the keyboard that you can download and install?
Is it a keyboard with lots of buttons on it?

In the meantime if you need to enter characters, XP has a virtual kybd:
C:\Windows\system32\osk.exe

You could try to uninstall the human interface device from device manager,
or also do a system restore to go back a few days before the problem started.

Ok, I have some experience with computers but not lots so bear with me please; and help as much as you can.  I have a Toshiba laptop and I went to use it and the keyboard was no longer working.  I checked in the my computer section & it states keyboard is in working order.  The computer is about 2 years old and nothing happened to it from the last time I used it until now.I bought a usb keyboard to see if that would work and it does not either.  I took it to my computer person who lives a fair distance from me & upon quick troubleshooting thinks I may have done one of the windows updates and it corrupted it??  When the computer is booting up I clicked on F2 & F12 and then I am able to use my keyboard arrows to move around the screen whereas even those don't function at any other time when the computer fully boots up.  I brought my computer home to attempt to save anything I could by putting it on my hard drive.  The option the computer tech suggested was possibly reinstall XP in which case I would loose all my data.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
