Touchscreen / passive digitizer: can it be soft?

Question: Touchscreen / passive digitizer: can it be soft?

Most passive digitizers of lenovo tablets (at least older ones - x41t, x60t, x61t) are hard, i.e. significant pressure from user's finger is required before system will register a "click" from touchscreen. Are there any models or modifications of x series tablets with soft touchscreens, like touchscreens of most windows mobile communicators and "touchphones" (iPhone, LG Vievty etc.), i.e. tablets with touchscreens that require nothing more than a "mere touch" to register "click"?Maybe hardness of touchscreen can be reduced through its driver settings?

Preferred Solution: Touchscreen / passive digitizer: can it be soft?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

agravein wrote: Are there any models or modifications of x series tablets with soft touchscreens, like touchscreens of most windows mobile communicatorsHmm...I honestly don't know if there is any mod, but I don't think there is a solution for you so far. Nonethess, my thought of this touch screen is different. I am PDA fanatics as well, but when I first got X61T, I thought that this resistive digitizer was so great because it was really durable. I could use my nail directly on the screen without fear of scratch. While on PDA screen protector is a must, I wrote graffiti on my Palm until I had to change screen protector because there were many scratches and I couldn't see the screen clearly. From that day, it's over a year, I still don't see any scratch on my X61 screen. Although you have to press a bit harder, but I think it's not that bad. I also have tx2500z which has really soft passive digitizer and Dell XT which has capacitive digitizer. Yes, XT is the best if you use in portrait mode reading & scrolling things, but what I don't like most is tx2500z because "touch" is too light, I always get dot on when my palm touch on screen while inking. I don't have that issue with X61T at all. agravein wrote: "touchphones" (iPhone, LG Vievty etc.), i.e. tablets with touchscreens that require nothing more than a "mere touch" to register "click"?Maybe hardness of touchscreen can be reduced through its driver settings? That's capacitive touch. It is not based the same technology at all. In order to get a point on capacitive digitizer, you need to have something to absorb electron: finger or any part of our body, but nail, hair, etc. Then it will calculate the charge on the screen to locate the point. That's why it doesn't require any of pressure. While passive digitizer needs pressure to change electrical resistance on the screen and calculate for coordinate and with the version on X-series I don't believe that they have any kind of pressure sensitivity of passive digitizer; that's why you couldn't change any hardness.

Hi there, I hope you know why it is important as user of a tablet pc to have a good accuracy at writing and touching on your display. So this is why I am asking myself why is it impossible to calibrate digiziter and touchscreen under Windows 7 so it fits our needs as customer? It is not acceptable that the cursor moves more than 3mm from the position of the digitizer. The calibration tool integrated in Windows 7 is just poor. I get distances between cursor and digitizer up to 2cm when I use it!When I use the Wacom driver the calibration is way more useful but the driver itself isn't. So it is not an alternative to the Lenovo Enhanced Multitouch Driver. As you can see on this blog it is possible to use the calibration tool with another grid so you get a much better calibration. But up to now I am not able to find a way to use this also for calibrating the digitizer. Hey Lenovo, what about to improve the calibration on Windows 7? You would help many many many of your customers. I love my ThinkPad X200t. For me it's the best notebook I could find for my money. Especially for the reason that I use my ThinkPad for artwork I need a very good calibration.

Answer:Calibration of Digitizer and Touchscreen

Agreed! After carefully calibrating my digitizer, there is still a 4mm+ discrepancy between my digitizer pen and the cursor around the edges of my display.I'm looking forward to hearing the calibration solution.

Sadly the touchscreen of my ENVY x360 15-aq055na has cracked and now only one half of the screen responds to touch. My main problem is I'm having difficulties finding out which screen digitizers are compatibile with my model though. So i was wondering which digitizer panels would I be able to replace with my current broken one? ThanksRick

Answer:HP ENVY x360 Touchscreen Digitizer

That can be tricky. I am in the process of trying to find one for an Envy Spectre 13t that I donated to a no-for-profit organization a couple of years ago. Some one damaged the touchscreen. You will have to first check to see which screen yours has. Is it one with a UHD (3840 X 1260) or an FHD (1920 x 1080) display? The FHD version has a 30 pin connector and the UHD version has a 40-pin connector.According to the MSG document, yours has an FHD display, so you need the thirty pin display version. Which region of the world do you live in?  I need to know that to perform a search for a replacement screen. I will edit this shortly. Here is one in the UKhttp://www.laptop-lcd-screen.co.uk/shop/HP-COMPAQ-ENVY-X360-15-AQ055NA-15.6-LAPTOP-SCREEN-NO-DIGITIZ...

Hello. Here is my problem, I searched the net for a solution, haven't found.I have a Lenovo X60, model 6366 - with both capative touchscreen and digitizer pen. I worked fine until recently when I have to apply extreme pressure to hear the sound for touching - both touchscreen and digitizer pen.I had installed some of the recommended drivers from the Lenovo support center - for example, the multitouch driver (which didn't work). What is strange is that everything worked fine until recently; maybe it has something to do with the hinge problem - the hinge became very loose (I suspect someone dropped my computer), now I searching for a way to open and tighten it.Details:- I am running Windows 7 32-bit;- the digitizer worked well - even holding the pen over the screen (hovering, not touching) moved the pointer;- the touchscreen worked too - with a bit of pressure, but a reasonable amout of it, I could use my computer;- after I ran TuneUp 2013 StartUp Manager it disabled "Tablet Shortcut Menu", "Tablet Button" and "TSMResident" and the buttons on the screen stopped working - for example, I cannot change the orientation of the screen; I reenabled the programs, tried running the exe-files, but the buttons do not work anymore;- I have never succeeded to make multitouch work (the latest Wacom drivers - ISD_DualTouch_710-8 - made Windows say I have no touchscreen and no digitizer devices...); pressure sensitivity never worked too; a very nice diagnostics tool showed this (now it say... Answer:X60 - touchscreen and digitizer stopped working

Hi, vader11111

Your suspicion of possible damage to your machine could be correct, but there are a few other updates/changes that you might be able to try to see if that solves/helps your issue.

You've updated the drivers, but have you updated the BIOS? The BIOS being up to date can sometimes help several issues. You can also check the drivers on the support site to make sure you have the latest drivers. I know you've updated them from Lenovo Support Center, but I always recommend people to check the support website just to make sure. You can find the drivers and BIOS updates for your machine here. You can filter the results by searching the types of drivers you are seeking in the first dropdown box and Windows 7 in the second box.

Hope it helps, and let me know how it goes,
Adam

Hi

When I turn the display off, the touchscreen and digitizer are still enabled, so, if I touch the screen, the display comes back on. Any way to solve this?

Also, not sure if related, if I turn the screen off and leave it overnight, the battery drops by 25-30% in about 8 hours. Same thing happens when I leave the screen turned off for a short period of time, the battery just doesn't last. Not sure if its because the touchscreen and digitizer are still on.

P.S. Running on upgraded Windows 10 64bit.

Recently I found out that my lenovo yoga 710-15ikb laptop doesnt support digitizer active pen technology. Its hidden in online talks and also frustration when you buy a $70 wacom bamboo ink pen to find that it doesnt work. I understand that most active pens wont work with my computer because the screen (and maybe motherboard) dont have a digitizer. However, I have been looking online and some retailers appear to be selling digitizer lcd screens for my specific model. My question is whether or not these retailers are selling aftermarket screens and if they are will the digitizer work once one is installed? Also, I have a lot of experience doing repair work, mainly with digital cameras and building my desktop, so the task of replacing my laptops screen is not a problem Im just unsure as to whether or not buying a new digitizer lcd screen will work. I dont want to spend money that I dont have to if it turns out that I am just being misled.

Thanks!

Let me know if you need more clarification I'll be around for a while.

I freshly reinstalled my windows 7.
before and after the install,
when I watch videos on youtube.com (that's the only example atm),
the videos play great, flawless framerate, no matter the quality.
but they will randomly lockup. pause. only while in fullscreen.
high speed internet, videos have completed downloading, streaming speed isn't the issue.

if i press ESC to the video minimizes to a smaller display and works flawlessly,
if i press full screen again, the video continues flawlessly, untill 5 or 10 seconds later,
no specific time, they may more may not pause again.

no other system annoyances that i can recall.
i tried updating divx, although Ive never had to install those to watch youtube.

any ideas what could cause full screen video lockup?
ESC and a refullscreen instantly solves the issue, but i have to do it a few times throughout some videos.

reinstall java maybe? seems like I had to install java to watch youtube. i forget.

Answer:full screen youtube video lockup (soft soft)

I would make sure my Java script was OK. Do you run Trend A/V by any chance. This can block Java! What's you broadband speed? Does this happen at all times of the day or only at specific times?

hi there ,

Inspite of being very careful , I'm having troubles with that stupid trojan and virus alerts for 2 days now.. I tried kaspersky6 and nod32 to detect and clean the reason but had no luck till then..

well, here are the details..

I cannot see temporary internet files folder which should be in :

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings folder.

and those gifs are created periodically , after deleting , they appear again some time later in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp folder.

nod32 is alerting like crazy about those gifs , you can see the quarantine screenshots below

finally, you can see the combofix and hijackthis logs below..

I found these in my machine. Are they necessary and, in layman terms, what do they do?Much appreciated. Please advise.Something is causing IE8 to run slow for the past 2 days following some cleaning I did. Games are choppy and sluggish. When clicking with cursor it hesitates. Causes problem when playing games in Webkinz. I am just looking for the cause and since I don't know what the 2 above software/programs are thought they may be related.  I ran a ISP speed test, results:ping 119, Download 1.28 and Upload 0.11, DSLI use CCleaner and Advanced System Care bu IObot. Sometimes I use TweakNow PowerPack 2011. I have defraged registry and harddrive.

Answer:Soft Agent Controls & Soft Assisted Service

I wouldn't use any IOBit software at all...even if they paid me...it's possible SoftAgent is a component of that package but a quick search produced muddled results with no clear answer. There are many other better Free alternatives for what ASC supposedly does...but i would recommend dumping it ASAP.

Answer:Best soft to recover 3TB HDD of GPT on wondows 7 ? free soft most like

I just recently had a problem similar to yours, just mine was a bit more complex and have put it on the 'backburner' untill I have more time. I havent found a reason why my disk did 'fail' but dont worry, it can be recovered. Greg recommended this program to solve my solutions, Partition Wizard. This comes in many 'formats' Home version is what you want, it is free and allows you to do the tasks you will need. There is also a more advanced 'bootable' cd which can aslo be foudn on their website. By following this link to a video guide, you have lots of chances of recovering most-all of your data, only downside is that you must have a seperate hdd to copy the recovered files onto, be it your internal HDD or an external one. DONT COPY YOUR RESTORED FILES STRAIGHT BACK ONTO THE DRIVE as this may lead to permenante data loss. It is upto you if you choose the cd/normal one. Could i recommend you ask gregrocker to have a say in this thread as he knows alot in this area,

So I've had this happen countless times. The touchscreen stops working. The laptop is in perfect conditions. The screen, not even a scratch. I format the laptop, it still doesn' work. So, I've always fixed it by installing the AUO Touchscreen Firmware/ sp63116.exe from:http://support.hp.com/mx-es/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-14-f000-sleekbook/5375393/model/5403360#... My problem atm is that this time, that process isn't working. The installer opens, installs the thing, then the program opens and immediately closes. This prompts windows to ask me if the driver installed correctly or that if it should attempt to install under a compatibility mode. No matter which I choose, it still does the same thing. It won't stay open for more than 1 second.  I've restored my laptop to factory presets a couple times already and the touchscreen isn't working yet because the driver/program/wizard thingy refuses to stay open after it is done installing. Can anybody help me? Perhaps share a different version of the installer? Thank you.

SOme info about the laptop. Product Name: Sleekbook HP Pavilion 14-f004lOperating System: Microsoft Windows 8 (64-bit) I've had this problem a couple times already. The touchscreen stops working sporadically and the only way to make it work again is installing the  AUO Touchscreen Firmware/ sp63116.exe driver from this site. however this last time I've run into quite the weird problem. The driver installer CLOSES INMEDIATELY BEFORE I CAN DO ANYTHING A couple months ago I posted this:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/AUO-Touchscreen-Firmware-installer-doe... Since then due to time constrains and schoolwork, I did not attempt to restore the BIOS until today.Today I restored the BIOS, followed all procedures they gave me, and the installer for the Touchscreen firmware does the following: -Runs-Asks for permission-Install it-Finishes installing-Runs the program's window-Inmediately closes, I can't even click on anything because it flashes for a second and disappears. I've already restored the laptop to factory presets. The installer DOES THE SAME THINGRestored the BIOS. The installer DOES THE SAME THING So please, do not tell me to restore the laptop. I've done it already. Doesn't work. Same thing for the BIOS. Nothing. Can anyone help me? Thank you

Like everybody else on this thread I want to cool my pc down. However, unlike the rest of you guys I just had an inspiration! It began like this: It's Mississppi and it got really hot and I bought a box fan for 10$ at Home Depot. Instead of using it on myself I decided to pop the side panel off my case and stick the fan next to it. The fan was a perfect fit, and all my temperatures dropped by 3-5 celsius as I remember except for my cpu. My cpu started climbing gradually to well above normal which was well above anything I was comfortable with. The cpu fan speed also ratcheted up about 1000 rpms. I then realized that the box fan must be interfering with the cpu fan, so I turned the box fan around to suck air out instead of blow air into the case. All my temps dropped nicely. Now I do this permanently and get 26-30c cpu, 39-43c gpu, and 50c chipset. So I began flipping out over the chipset, which has no fan only aluminium heatsink, and became determined to get fans all round. However, I am extremely loath ditch my box fan. It gives me very good temperatures at its lowest setting and it can practically levitate at the highest setting. However, I can't use it as effectively in conjunction with other case fans as all the smaller airflows get chocked off by the giant box fan airflow. So here is my great inspiration, and if you read the title of this thread you now understand what it is, use only high quality copper heatsinks for all my parts and use the box fan to cool th... Answer:Passive Cooling with a Box Fan!

Where is the picture?

Passive, as I understand it, means absolutely no active. The fan in the psu counts as one. Until you get rid of every fan in the case, it's not totally passive.

I have a 3d hdtv, it uses passive glasses. now I don't know a thing about 3d, but I do know that my nvidia card is capable, and also setup (I can see the square nicely). But it isn't working when I play a 3d movie, or games, I can clearly see the "2" seperate images. I have gathered (I think), that movies are being played as video signal without some needed "3d" signal, because the tv does not "activate 3d", and I see nothing but blurred mixed video. I assume the graphics card is doing the same thing with games, because 3d does not activate either, and same blurr is on the screen. I only know the tv is supposed to activate because the manual said it does, and nothing happens, If I activate it manually, the screen is horrendous and unviewable nevermind unwatchable. I've tried many settings, side by side, up n down, powerdvd gives me options of checkerboard, but still nothing. In fact, the only thing that sort of worked was the few demo pictures supplied by nvidia when you enable 3d vision. Even though 3d was working for them pictures, I had to work a little to get it working in my eyes. Is there anything I can do to get some sort of 3d working? The glasses came with the tv, and not nvidias, I do not have the emmiter, I am using the vision as opposed the the emmitter, if that helps.

Does anyone know if xp pro ftp server can be configured to allow the default passive ftp settings in IE? I have ftp setup on xp pro and outsiders can access it only if they turn off passive ftp in the advanced tab in Internet Properties of Internet Explorer. I tried to add a PassivePortRange string in the registry and forwarded the ports in my linksys router and still IE will not access my ftp site unless the passive ftp setting is unchecked.

I just want to buy some cooling stuff for my pc and i was thi king wot is the best passive cooler or fans.i know that for the CPU u need both but what abou the chipset of the motherboard.can somebody tell which cooling parts are better and for which parts of my pc

Answer:Passive cooler or Fan

The newer chipsets run so hot they have to have active cooling or elaberate heatpipes. Companies like Arctic Cooling and Zalman make fans for almost any application that are very quiet.

Any recommendations for a passive (inline) network TAP to monitor traffic? It is for personal use and learning. Willing to buy used to save money. I have seen a few of these on eBay but not sure what brand/model to purchase. I am running 1G network, was going to insert the TAP inline after the FW to test internal traffic. So probably just need one with four ports. One for ingress traffic, one port for egress, and two for monitoring.

Answer:Passive Network Tap

What gear are you running currently? Can you setup a span / monitor port on the existing firewall / router?

Or build one like this:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-Passive-Network-Tap/

hak5 also has one available for cheap:

Lemme just spell it out:

I am torn between Arctic Cooling NV4 Rev2 and some passive cooling solution with fans (Tt Giant III or Zalman ZM80D-HP) for my VGA. Which I plan to OC of course. The AC is alot cheaper I must say, but I was thinking that the passive cooling ones might perform better with... say a 120mm fan blowing into it.

It takes more work and all that, but the main thing I want is performance.

Airflow in my comp is top notch I think at the moment, so I might not even need another fan blowing:
1. 80mm on top.
2. 80mm on side panel.
3. 120mm (about 36CFM) front.
4. 120mm (67CFM, rocket sounding thing) back.
5. modified my PSU to take in a higher CFM 80mm. can't remember spec on that now.

I might just get anohter 120mm to blow directly on top of my VGA, if I get the passive cooling one (stuff the 80mm optional fan or 3 CFM 9kRPM crap).

I can't get any decent reviews which will tell me which one's better. The AC is winning though, since its got really good reviews, but I think its just because of the brand.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Answer:What VGA cooling is better? AC, or passive?

Yes, you can't get reviews ; no one's trying passives with fan in front of them...

If you don't like to do everything like everyone else, you could try the passive + fan.

Question: Passive memory?

Hi. I'm thinking about installing a new graphics card into my PC, mainly to smooth out streaming video that comes in buffering, stuttering etc. I have a fast Fios connection, and just had them install a new modem hoping that would help but it didn't. So, the next step is to upgrade the graphics card. I found one on Amazon for about thirty bucks that seems to fit the bill. But there are two varieties, one regular memory and one with "passive" memory. I never heard of this. Can anyone tell me what it is. Thanks, TW

Existing images just show the battery location but I cannot tell the pole directions. Is there an image on how to install the batteries? Where do Positive & Negative go? dc++ is a p2p program i have used for a decade. for the most part it uses 1 of 2 different types of connection, and active mode for pc to pc communication, and a passive mode which uses pc to hub to pc communication.

i have an extremely simple home newtwork:
isp> cable modem> mobo ethernet adapter

and i have always been able to use active mode. well now for some unknown reason active mode no longer works. i am trying to figure out why.

i think i remember my ip and my default gateway used to have the same first 3 blocks of the dot quad.
my ip would be like
75.xxx.52.182 and then my default gateway would be like
75.xxx.52.1

well it is no longer like this, it is now like
75.xxx.52.182
75.xxx.48.1

so i dicked around with my isp generated dynamic routing tables and changed them accordingly, that didnt seem to work either but i dont know if the changes solidified.

i thought my subnet mask used to be 255.255.255.0 and now it is 255.255.248.0.

---
im wondering what could have changed that would break this program now. i have reinstalled the program freshly. same issue. software firewall disabled, still same issue. and it seems there have been no other connection issues.

cliffs: what could have possibly changed my network so dc++ no longer can use a direct pc to pc connection?

Hi! I am newbie coder (no experience whatsoever) :X and have trouble editing files to function specifically.

Basically an authentication requiring a username and password to enter I use. The prompt for authentication only shows up in browsers such as firefox or explorer: Prompt in Browser. The problem is that this prompt does not show up in other apps connecting to the internet and these apps do not have the coding (ex: Coded Application Example ) to easily (for me at least xD) connect with the user I set up.

I was looking through .dll files and system information.. it says something about auto proxy config url..also "GetDefaultProxyConfiguration" and if other apps have this coded in, I assume there must be something I can edit or code in for internet settings.

I've been looking deeper into files and registry and such trying to get clue.
Under registry (Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings) it doesn't look like there is anything for me to input values for Username and Password, although the authentication prompt always appears. However, when I view certain apps that have the authentication coded in I find the the settings (username/password) within the registry.

Can I add into registry for Internet Settings some sort of key that will operate in the same way as other apps (passively entering in authentication username and password)? Is my problem deeper in that it needs more coding ><? Perhaps there is a program specifically... Read more

Answer:Coding in Passive Authentication

Well, it would help if you said what code your using, but by the looks it looks like there is some special coding that IE and Firefox has that your app lacks. Well, I'm guessing that you would need more coding.

Hey all.

Going to get one of these from monoprice:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10521&cs_id=1052102&p_id=8744&seq=1&format=2

Just for in my garage and if I like it I'll get a 2nd one for in the house and replace my blah wireless router (cause these look pretty and they are N)

Anyways, looking at POE injectors since that's a POE AP and I'll avoid a whole bunch of wires running around.

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Multi-port-p...n_0&hash=item27c87548c3&_uhb=1#ht_2197wt_1271

Will something like this pass GigE speeds? I'm assuming yes since it's just the brown pair required for power and all the other pairs for the GigE speeds so the unit should just pass through the other pairs and add power the brown right?

Thanks.

Answer:Passive POE Injector and GigE.

Have you looked at something with an actual name brand like a ubiquiti unifi access point? I bought one yesterday for $68 shipped on ebay. It can also do POE if you want

If it's powering just the AP, you don't have to worry about gigabit anyways, as the unit tops out at ~300mbits for 802.11n

Hey all,

I have and FTP server on a win 2003 server box in my network and it has been operational for almost a year without a firewall. It is configured for passive FTP, I verified this by executing adsutil.vbs get command for PassivePortRange and it returns : (STRING) "5500-5520". Clients can connect and perform file transfers without issue for the most part. However, I have noticed that when I connect using a ftp client (filezilla), the PASV command string I see is:

227 Entering Passive Mode (<ip-address>, 4, 247).

According to my math, that is using port 1271. The LIST command does return directory contents and file transfers are allowed. I am curious why the PassivePortRange setting is not used.

Recently, I have put up a firewall on the server. In the firewall advanced settings tab, FTP server, Web Server, and a couple other services are checked. For exceptions, I have manually opened ports 20, 21, 80, and 5500-5520. Now, I am having some issues. Some clients can connect to the FTP server, but they are unable to transfer files. It gave an error message about something set to A. After some research, the current workaround is to have clients turn off passive mode ftp in their browser settings. This allows file transfers, but clients report that after a while they cannot transfer files again and have to switch passive mode back on to connect again. Then after a while ( like for most of the day) they have to turn passive mode off again to transfer files. I... Read more

Answer:Solved: passive ftp and firewall

I fixed this by changing the firewall. I guestimated the port range start at 5200 (for some reason that port sounds important to me, like i configured it for something but i cant recall what it was) and end at 5300. Anyways, Vista clients can now connect to the ftp server in passive mode without issue. I'd prefer reporting this fixed at end of day, but I am confident all my users should not have issue now. The only lingering qustion I have is why I cannot configure this ftp server to use the 5500-5520 range i had originally configured. I do have quite a few things running on it:

defect tracking database
apache/PHP-enabled web server
SVN server
File server
Domain controller

I can configure my backup server to use the correct port range tho, but its not running alot of these services currently

I have read in many article about passive and avtice,,,some of these article:

1- Passive and Active FTP.

2- Passive and Active mode for VLAN Trunk between switches.

3- Passive and Active Cisco router Interface.

4- Passive and Active Hub.

What do word paasive and active mean in general ?

Answer:Passive and Active Terminology

Well in each example they are a little different if I had more time I would include more links -

Here's FTP -
http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html

Active And Passive Hubs -
http://www.thecomputernews.com/Tutorials/MCSEtutorial/lesson29.htm about half way down
Usually the Passive means finds its own way OR does not alter the signal. While active is something that is more a direct router or is regenerating a signal or does somthing actively to the connection. The best thing to do is take this meaning on a device by device or an application by application basis.

Hi, I joined Lenovo Community specifically to ask this question. I am in the UK and have purchased a Lenovo Ideacentre B540-41  23? Touchscreen 3D All-in-one PC from Currys PC World. I am asking if the Active 3D feature is actually Passive 3D, based on my experience. http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/lenovo-ideacentre-b540-41-23-touchscreen-3d-all-in-one-pc-17392854-pdt.... Currys PC World says ?With active 3D technology you can step up your entertainment and view content in a whole new light", and states that the PC has a ?LED Active 3D" as well as (Nvidia) 3D Vision graphics. But the two pairs of 3D glasses supplied with the B540 are passive, non-powered, polarised glasses instead of the battery operated, active shutter glasses that work with an Active 3D screen. As far as I know, Active 3D and Passive 3D systems are incompatible. That is, you cannot use passive glasses to view 3D images on an active 3D screen and vice versa. Yet these passive 3D glasses actually work in letting you view 3D images on the Lenovo B540 screen! So is the B540 equipped for Passive 3D? Or, have Lenovo found a way to let you view a passive 3D image on an active 3D screen?  Why does it matter? Firstly I bought the machine based on the advertised specifications. If the 3D specification is actually passive 3D instead of active 3D then that is a breach of trade descriptions and the law. Secondly, as a user, I obviously need to know what my PC's 3D capabilities are in ord... Read more

I had a question regarding a problem I am having at one of my offices:

End users are connecting to cloud FTP sites via filezilla from our office. WiFi users connecting to the FTP site have to enable active mode, while wired users have to enable passive mode in order to access FTP sites outside of our office. They are on the same vlan with same policies.

We have a Sonicwall TZ105, ,a few managed switches, and an aruba WiFi network.

Why would that kind of change be necessary for ftp to work?

Answer:FTP Passive and Active modes Question

FTP clients should almost always be using passive mode, it is just easier that way. Active mode gets blocked by NATs, Firewalls, etc unless you add configuration. So the question is why do wifi users have to use active mode.

so awhile ago me and a buddy were playing Need for Speed World Online and I walked away to use the bathroom. When I came back he jumped away from my desk and there was a window open on my laptop. The window was called Password recovery, so i thought nothing of it. I closed the window than suddenly command prompt opened and showed what look like scrolling code. It was to fast so i couldn't read it. When it was done command prompt closed and a window opened than my task bar disappeared. i cant close the window but the title of it is Openbit. I tried to use Task Manager and it gave me an error saying it was restricted by the Administrator, but I'm the only user on the laptop. I figured that part out and can solve the Task Manager issue myself. I've tried restoring my system to an update from 2 weeks, a month, all the way back to when i bought and boot up the computer for the first time but nothing changed. How can I get rid of this virus? i cant seem to find what he downloaded to give me this.
EDIT* When i restored it said it failed to load previous registry so the virus is messing with it. Just can't figure out how to get rid of it.

hello-
does anyone have experience using passive cooling on the 55 watt AMD AM2 5200 chip?

I am making a computer for my father, who wants the computer on the desk, so he doesn't have to crawl down to insert a dvd or to plug in a device. So I am making a quiet computer.

This chip should not run very hot, so I want to figure out a good passive cooling device.

These 55 watt AMD AM2 5200 chips run hotter than you think, a passive cooler would be massive. There are plenty of "normal" HSF combinations that are quiet enough

This is my first post so apologies as I'm sure this is probably "an old chesnut" but I can't find my way round enough to find the answer.

My system is XP sp2 with ie7 as my browser (?). When running a "Diagnose Connection Problems" the FTP error 12029 is reported in active and passive modes. I'm sure I've encountered this before but don't know how it was resolved, although a destructive (ouch) restore springs to mind - my computer won't do a non-destructive for reasons only it knows.

I don't know if the above is a result of the following or the other way around but I have the following problems as well. If they need separate posts then please advise where.

I believe my computer has been compromised!! I cannot access the Microsoft Update Site (error 0x80072EE7) and Google searches are being redirected (some automatically) to "dodgy" sites. This is more worrying for me as last time this happened I lost everything.

Not very brief I'm sorry. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply.

Guys I have a bit of a problem here.... I'm not sure how familar any of you are with call recording when it comes to IP phones.

Currently we have a customer who has a "passive" solution. What happens in a passive solution is that we setup span ports to get the RTP traffic, which contains the audio over to the recorder. It filters by IP address and is able to peice together calls.

We are currently installing an ACTIVE solution. What happens in this scenario is within the Cisco CUCM we configure the phones to create a duplicate copy of the audio via Built in Bridge, and ACTIVELY send us the RTP stream.

The problem is that the customer needs the passive and active solution to work at the same time.

Heres the dillema....

Since their current recorder is spanning all traffic from the phone; not only is it getting the "normal" call traffic, but at the same time all the Built in Bridge traffic is getting spanned as well.

Their recorder is gettin confused and dropping the employee side of the call. It maintains the customer side of the call because in a passive environment that audio doesnt come from the phone.

Soooo..... Current recorder is getting confused because its seeing TWO copied streams from the same IP address and dropping it.

How to fix? Is it possible to configure Windows firewall to block traffic from only specific portions of this span? How we keep the "Built in Bridge" traffic from reaching their c... Read more

Answer:IP Phone Recording Active/Passive

Depends on how it's physically setup.

I'd configure an ACL so your active stream is dropped. Just block traffic destined for the IP of the active recorder.

Self-explanatory title; Why was Passive Mode added to Avast? Was it highly requested or internally implement to improve compatibility with Windows Defender on Windows 10?

What are your thoughts and opinions on Passive Mode for Avast?

Answer:Why did Avast add Passive Mode? And is it needed?

I believe Passive Mode is simply a bypass for the whole "Uninstall other AV products" page that you get when you try to install a new protection suite over an existing one. For example, if you have EIS installed, and you try to install Avast, it used to inform you that EIS must be removed first. Passive Mode will bypass that and install Avast anyway with Passive Mode auto-enabled.

Not a whole lot of user posts about Passive Mode so far, but this seems to be the gist of it.

Hello All. I am looking to connect my PC with a Asus H-97 Pro motherboard, which has a HDMI out, DVI out to a Dell monitor with VGA input. VGA out on the CPU is already connected to the first monitor. Now I read that since HDMI, DVI are digital signals and VGA is analog, there is no way a passive 'converter' can be used to connect. But then I always read such mixed reviews of such passive cables where one says it doesn't work, while the other says its perfect! Couple of videos where passive cables worked to connect HDMI out to VGA input. So I wonder how is it working for them? Where is the conversion happening for them? When and what exactly is this passive HDMI to VGA cable used for? Do they work for gaming stations and not CPUs?What is the trick to figuring out active or passive when connecting digital out to analog in? Is it safe to assume that it definitely requires an active circuitry? Coming back to my situation, what type of adapter should I buy? I have a HDMI out, DVI-D dual link out on my CPU and a VGA input Dell Monitor.Thank you!

Answer:Active or Passive? HDMI/DVI to VGA conversion

Let me do a quick response.Don't bu anything. Not yet. Consider all your options carefully, HDMI to VGA conversion and the other way can be a disaster.....After giving this some thought here's what I'm thinking. I am thinking you could buy yourself another graphics card that will provide you the output you need. Here's my reasoning. Doing the conversion of HDMI to VGA requires the use of an active adapter that only works in one direction. Here's the problem. Some of the adapters people want to sell you are wrong way adapters you ask for HDMI to the VGA  and they'll try to sell you the opposite. They might try to sell you a VGA to HDMI active adapter. And there's no such thing as any passive adapter that converts digital to analog or analog-to-digital. Not really. The cost of a good active adapter may be about the same price as what you would pay for a good used dual VGA monitor.Just about a week ago had to go through some of this stuff myself. At the present time you can pick up a very good television set with an HDMI input for a very reasonable price. You might consider the value of your current VGA monitor. What is it worth? If you want to keep using the VGA monitors I strongly recommend you go get a dual graphics card that has two VGA outputs. The card does not have to be expensive . In most cases any kind of PCI graphics card will outperform the built-in graphics on the motherboard. Actually, I really don't know what graphics you... Read more

I am awaiting delivery of my T620 Thin Client with Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and integrated AMD Radeon HD 8330E graphics. There are two Displayports which I want to connect to two monitors with DVI inputs, so I will need 2 Displayport to DVI adapters. I am confused about whether or not I need to buy more expensive "active" adapters or whether two "passive" adapters will be sufficient. Any helpful advice regarding which adapters I need will be appreciated.

I recently acquired a HP Pavilion all in one pc but there seem to be problems with the touchscreen. It registered touches very intermittently, and not always where I touched. First thing I tried was to calibrate it. But it just wouldn't register certain touches in some of the places it wanted me to press. Nest i Reset everything to factory settings, still not working same probs. Installed all the latest drivers and updates, no joy. But one morning I did turn it on and it worked perfectly. For half a day and then it was up to its old tricks.
Took it to a computer shop and they said it needed a new touchscreen card. Basically I want to know, do these touchscreen sort of devices have a piece of hardware, the card, specifically for touchscreen. or is he lying to me and its some software problem he could fix in ten minutes. He's quoting around 40for the card. And another 20-30 for the labour. Any help would be much appreciated. If there is a card just for the touchscreen then I could believe him. But ive never heard of a card just for that. Any help would be so much appreciated. Had this around 3 weeks for my daughter to use the touchscreen as shes too young for mouse and keyboard, but she'd like a number of touchscreen games as she's very adept at using touchscreen on her tablet. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Now that Lumia 830 is out on AT&T, did anyone get a chance to test if it supports passive voice activation? Articles online seem to be contradictory. Some saying it requires SensorCore, which is present in SnapDragon 400, some mentioning it requires SnapDragon 8x and others mentioning the requirement of both. So, I guess the only way of testing it is to have a actual hands-on. Has anybody been lucky on that to test it???

Answer:Passive Voice Activated Cortana on Lumia 830???

At the moment, it requires the Snapdragon 8xx chipset, so doesn't work with the 830. Sorry.

I was so anxious for this week as I was expecting this feature of passive voice activation ( PVA) but was really disappointed to see phones like 720/820/525/920/925/1020 not getting this feature. What are you guys thinking? Keeping in mind that It can destroy the fan base of 1020 with a slight margin as it cost more than both Lumia 1520 and 930 .

I have a DELL laptop running windows 7 and I am completely confused by the power setting for cooling:under power options advanced settings there is a setting for active or passive cooling either plugged in or battery:It says for an "active" cooling policy to SLOW the processor before INCREASING fan speed. For "passive" it says INCREASE the fan speed BEFORE slowing the processor. This makes no sense. Shouldn't it be the opposite? It seems like my fan runs too much even when the computer is just idling and I"m trying to stop it. Any other ideas?

Answer:Active vs Passive Cooling in power settings?

set too active, the processor will slow, but your not likely to notice, thus it will stay cooler, and the fan will not have to work so hard...close all extra process's like indexing and search, which may set to run when the system is not in use, check the settings for anti virus, when it runs etc etc..if your fan is running a lot, and its an older computer you should try a can of compressed air and blow out the dust, or vacuum all the vents, it may be that you need to reseat the cooler and put on fresh thermal paste..if its new take it back to the shop and ask them to this for you.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

The symptoms are when on a remote computer via Windows RDP, typing characters seems to bring up shortcut actions instead of typing the letter and staying focused there. For instance when I type in f it brings up a search window.

I changed keyboards on the host system, rebooted both, did a SR on the remote, tried RDP on the other KVM-attached computer with the same results, looked for Ease of Access and sticky key stuff that might be on...none that I can find.

If I log in locally to the remote computer, no problems. If I log into the remote computer from another computer not associated with the KVM, again no problem is apparent.

So it has to be the KVM right? Its passive and just sits there without moving, but it seems to have gone bad somehow??

Answer:Solved: Passive KVM switch lost its mind?

Well one KVM switch switch later, all seems to be well, though the remote desktop I still had open when I made the switch for the other switch was still in keyboard shortcut mode. I though, well, what in the wild wild wild world of sports was going on; but now that I've signed out and started a new session, all seems good again.

Still don't know what could have gone wrong, switch has been in use for several years, its up off the floor and always dry, never had a problem or glitch previous, it must be whatever little bit of curcuitry it has to emulate the keyboard connection has malfunctioned. The double scroll lock tap was still switching over fine and the mouse emulation and screen were fine. Good thing I had another computer not on the KVM or I'd still be banging stuff with a hammer.<shrugs shoulders>

Hi there,Is there a general consensus as to the 'best' settings for the Processor Power Management System Cooling Policy on a Windows 7 netbook? I gather that passive slows the processor before increasing the fan whilst active increases fan speed before slowing processor. I'm guessing that on battery passive is the way to go to preserve battery whilst on mains power active is the natural way to go.

So far, my war against spyware is the following :-

Quote:

1. Spybot Search and Destory

then if there is still a problem....
2. Ad Aware 6.0

3. HiJack This

4. HiJack This again

5. HiJack This and again

6. fdisk, format C, re-install OS as HiJack this will kill the rest of my OS is I using any further.

So far, I have used this method to clean up Spyware after the PC has been infectef. However, does any one know of any programs that will monitor your PC activities and PREVENT SPYWARE from installing in the first place. (Like your typical antivirus software)

Answer:Passive Spyware Scanning - Prevention is better than cure!

who is checking your HijackThis logs? If used properly you can completely clean up your system with it without any risk to the system itself. for prevention I use all of the following now, and I haven't had a single problem in weeks.

Norton 2004 Extended threat (registered)
SpywareBlaster (free)
Trojan Guarder (registered)
Zone Alarm (free)
Socks Ad Blocker (free)

For scanning and assesment:
Spybot S/D (free)
Ad-Aware 6.0 (free)
HijackThis (free)
CWshredder (free)

I uploaded a lot of the good free ones and the unregistered version of Trojan Guarder to this site if you want to download it: http://www.mmi-hosting.com/~Cunjo/Ot...tuff/Security/ Please see BOTH of the readmes the one on that page, and the one that is in the SFX RAR archive.

Zone Alarm and Keiro come highly reccomended, and SpywareBlaster can help too.

EDIT: for good advice on those things, and to have your HijackThis logs checked for problems, try http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums . they can help a LOT with those things.

Hi,
I am looking into buying a flat panel monitor and am not sure what type to get. I see ones that are active matrix and some passive matrix. What is the difference? If someone would be able to explain to me the different types and opinions on which is the best and/or re-direct me to a website which explains it I would be very thankful. TIA

Answer:Flat Panel Monitors: Active vs passive matrix.

Hello Hajile,
Active Matrix screens cost a little more, but look much better, and register picture changes faster. These differences are hard to explain if you do not see them, but they are VERY noticable. So much so that the average Passive Matrix screen will bug you even if you never see an active matrix one in operation. They are still a good option for lower cost though, and provide a usable, but sometimes annoying, picture.

Another difference is that an Active Matrix screen can be read from any angle but a Passive Matrix screen is hard to read from anywhere except center.

You could reasonably expect to pay about 50% more for an Active Matrix than a Passive Matrix.
Hope this helps.

And Internet Security it needed?

I believe Passive Mode is simply a bypass for the whole "Uninstall other AV products" page that you get when you try to install a new protection suite over an existing one. For example, if you have EIS installed, and you try to install Avast, it used to inform you that EIS must be removed first. Passive Mode will bypass that and install Avast anyway with Passive Mode auto-enabled.

Not a whole lot of user posts about Passive Mode so far, but this seems to be the gist of it.

I have an HP Pavilion 505n. I have two fans that work great and can be viewed in back. One is a duct fan that does passive cooling.

This morning, after turning my computer back on (after unplugging it during a short thunderstorm), I get the error message that the CPU fan isn't working, and that I need to service it immediately..and it shuts off. I can bypass it with F2, which I did once, and I smelled nothing hot.

Is my motherboard falsely reporting that the fan is not working? And why would it do that??

G'day people!
I've got a ASUS P4PE motherboard and a few months ago the passive heatsink fell off the northbridge controller (just below the CPU), unfortunatly its impossible to fix it back on as the clips for the spings have been ripped off the motherboard (dodgy design). So far the computer has been running just fine, but i was wondering if, with the controller probably running a bit hotter, this would decrease the performace of the computer?
Thanks for any help!

I'm hoping this might turn into a recommendation thread, as there just isn't much info about this out on the webs. This is mainly in regard to performance when highlighting, drawing, or dragging the stylus across the screen. My experience is, while the bulk stylus packs that are available on places like Amazon work great for most people's Apple and Android tablets, general consensus is that they are horrible on Windows tablets. I've tried several, even a Bamboo stylus, but they all skip or jump when you try to highlight or drag, making them useless. This is on a Surface RT, Dell Venue 8 Pro, and Winbook TW800.
Anyway, I've done tons of research, but can't seem to find any that work well but are at a decent price. Has anyone found a cheap stylus that works well for highlighting, etc?

Answer:What Passive Stylus Works Well with Cheap Windows Tablets?

Well, I did a quick search for the Winbook and I think it does not support Wacom.
The Dell Venue does support Wacom or at least Dell sells a Wacom like stylus for it. For that
device I recommend you buying the stylus specially designed for that tablet.
I know the Surface does not support Wacom. So, for the first and third tablet, any passive
stylus will do. Hate to say it..they are pretty much all the same and all work the same. And,
they are all pretty much lousy. This is why Wacom supported tablets are what people want
although very few tablets actually support it.
Not to mention is generally increased the selling price of the tablet. I just sold a 5 year old 12.1 inch tablet
with Windows 8.1 on it (that I installed) for $300.00 on Ebay because it supported Wacom
Good luck. How Wacom Tablets Work - HowStuffWorks

ASUS introduced a cooling system for high end video cards dubbed "SilentCool Technology", a fanless, noiseless cooling solution. Surprisingly, The all-new heatsink reduces GPU (graphics processing unit) by 40C while operating at 0db for silent operation. SilentCool's large heatsink design, supposably increases heat exchange area for absorbing heat away from the GPU. The hidden heat pipe and stacked fins, both made of copper, conduct heat away from the heatsink to the thing on the side. SilentCool is similar to technologies used in processor coolers, and reduces GPU temperature by 40C compared with thermal solutions for competing graphics cards.

Answer:ASUS passive cooling for high-end video cards

looks crazy...don't trust passive cooling myself but I'd like to see more reviews and if it were me I'd still wind up having a fan blowing beneath it

Apparently details are only available selectively and the engineers from Motorola are slow on the followup. Does anyone have white papers on Motorola's current PON head-ends w/ part numbers, interfaces, etc? Or if I cited some part numbers would you be able to provide more specs on the given part?

Maybe this will trend toward greater transparency with Google in control.

I recently purchased a 16 port gigabit switch that is made by 3com. It is the managed switch here: http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3CBLSG16

Unfortunately, it comes with 2 super loud sunon fan and there is no way I can disable it unless i open the switch which voids the warranty. Now, I can jam the fans by using various items. This switch will be used at home and in no way I will utilize the full switching capacity so i figure it should run pretty cool. From the spec sheet, the heat output is only 58watts/hour in maximum load. So do you guys think running this switch w/o fans will damage it?

I'm installing AV and firewall on someone's computer because they need something up there. However, my usual combo of Avira and Comodo Firewall would confuse these users pretty easily. I'm just used to the options and knowing what I'm looking at. Installing those two products would result in endless callbacks to me on their part.

I need something that's going to protect people who aren't very computer-literate (ie, probably couldn't/shouldn't be meddling with advanced AV/firewall options) and are virus prone because of bad net behaviors and general ignorance about computer security. (I'm trying to teach them, but I need something to hold them when I can't be there to answer phone calls.)

So, I guess a similar question would be, "If you were installing AV and firewall software on your grandparent's computer, what [free] products would you use?"

Answer:Suggestions for good, passive AV and Firewall for Vista Home Prem. 32-bit

It would be MSE and the windows firewall for me, and I would make sure your Granparents knew that by far the best defence against viruses is COMMON SENSE. Maybe create standard user accounts depending on their use and needs ofcourse.

Hello, As said in the title, this is what actually happens: While in tent mode, the CPU never goes beyond 35% use. The fan almost never kicks in and the overall experience is slowed down a lot. I set the Processor Cooling mode to Active in the current power plan, turned off "Intelligent Cooling" in Vantage and set it to "High performance" but it didn't fix it. It didn't seem to have any effect whatsoever. When running a CPU intensive task, as soon as I turn the screen back to normal mode, the fan starts spinning and the CPU use can go back up to 100%. I like having the laptop in tent mode, with a keyboard and mouse. Is there something I missed?

When I run network diagnostics it tries to automatically configure, but with no complete success. It does, however, improve some functions/configurations. Hi all. I have a T60 model 2008 thinkpad, and its running on Windows 7. All was going well. Two weeks ago, I noticed that it would get a little hotter than usual. As it had been a year since I opened it, I decided to service it. I used the manual and opened up the laptop, gently removed the heatsink, used compressed air to remove the dust and reinstalled it. I also put a pea drop of thermal paste on the CPU for good measure. Put it all back together and it is running significantly cooler. I usually use my laptop in Maximum battery mode when unplugged, and for that I keep the system cooling policy to passive. My question is, should the fan be running in that mode? Because ever since I serviced it, my heat sink fan runs in passive mode as well, (never noticed it running before in passive mode) and I think it is making my battery run time decrease.  Any ideas on how to fix this or if this is normal will be appreciated. Have a good day all. - Ibrahim.

Answer:Heatsink fan runs in Passive System Cooling policy (Thinkvantage Power Manager 3.62)

In passive mode the threshold temperature for when fan kicks in is increased, so fan would spin up to the max speed only when it reaches a higher temperature. But the fan will still kick in. When you put back the heatsink, make sure the thermal paste is applied properly, not too much just enough to have a thin layer on the CPU.http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/484577-thinkpad-t61-thermal-paste-guide.html

Question: X60 Digitizer Pen

I have posted before about my recently acquired X60T having a gap all round between the screen and the bezel. This is making me very, very nervous about the use of the pen with Windows 8, because of the sharp glass edge that the pen needs to move across. The pen that came with the machine has no Lenovo part number, but it seems to work well. I ordered a cheap spare pen with spare nibs from ebay. It also has no part number, although the advert said"IBM LENOVO ThinkPad X60 X61 X200 X201 W700 Tablet Digitizer STYLUS PEN 39T7481" The pen shown in the advert has a grey piece at the rubber (as opposed to the nib) end, as does the pen that came with the tablet, but the ebay pen that came has a red rubber end. When I move this pen round on the screen, a spot moves under it, and it highlights things, but I cannot make it click anything. Similarly it won't draw in Paint like the older pen. Is it faulty, or is it a different type of pen? I am trying a possible fix found elsewhere on the net, of removing the nib and lying it on its side for 24 hours. What I really need to know id whether I need to replace the screen bezel or whether there is some magic gunge i can use to fill the gap.

Answer:X60 Digitizer Pen

The pen supplier hasn't yet replied, although it's early days, and thescreen bezel is still a problem. An additional slightly odd problem is that the Windows 8 pen calibration utility seems to throw the pen calibration off rather than improve it. I am holding the pen vertical to do this. Do I have to accept that pen actions are flaky with an older machine like this and Win8. The machine is otherwise extremely good for doing what I want - controlling a graphics intensive audio program - and seems far more suitable than my son's newish touch screen Acer Win8 converible device.

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.

The Yoga 2 Pro doesn't have a digitizer. The panel is 10-finger capacitive touch. That said, there are a number of capacitive stylii available, but I don't have experience with them , so I can't offer a recommendation.

Hopefully other members will join the discussion with their experiences that will aid your decision.

Hi there, I have an X61 tablet, 7767 A4U, and want to buy a new digitizer pen. I come to ask if I can use a X41 or any other digitizer in my touch-laptop? By the way, can I make my screen finger-touchable, just through updating the software? My computer is only penable now, not for finger-touch. Thanks.Xiaodong

Answer:What digitizer can I use?

i believe an x41 pen will work but it probably won't fit in your holder and the eraser won't work. a gateway m275 pen will also work but again no eraser and it probably won't fit the holder.  i'm using an x41 pen in a gateway m275 tablet and it works fine. check in device manager under human interface devices and see if there is anything listed like, touch panel driver or HID-wacf008 or Gunze. not all x61's came with multi-touch screens.  from what i understand the viewing quality of the multi-touch is less than the pen version. probably because of the extra layer on the screen.  if you had multi-touch it would respond to your finger.
