Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

Question: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

Hello all,I've finally made my decision and purchased the Thinkpad Yoga last May of 2014 -- That Thinkpad Yoga (http://tinyurl.com/kornr3q) to be exact. What a wonderful machine it is, and I immediately fell in love with it!However, sadly a few months ago, the screen retention began to become an issue, a serious one, and weirdly enough, my USB slots are acting funny whenever I have a "detectable" device connected (such as phone, storage, camera, etc). I still have about 180 on my Lenovo original warranty, which I still can extend to another 2-3 years if I wanted to. and I also have purchased another 3-4 years 3rd party warranty from amazon. Both still valid to this date.I'm wondering, am I still eligible for a return? If yes, is there a chance for me to get the improved 2nd gen Yoga? if yes, would you guys be so kind and guide me through the process if you're familiar/experienced.If not, what would you guys advise me to do? What would you do in my situation? If you don't know, can you direct me to someone who might know and and maybe willing to help? That'll really mean a lot, and I'd very much appreciate any help I could get. Thanks a lot in advance! regards,

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

I've sent mine to the RMA (within 12 months period after purchase) and they have replaced the LCD under warranty. Seems to be the problem with many Thinkpad Yogas. Gosting does not occur now. Regards, P.

I've got the ghosting issue on my yoga as well.  It was OK for the first few weeks (no noticeable ghosting at all) but now it only takes around a minute of having something on screen for ghosting to appear when switching to something else.

I'm in the process of sending my yoga in for repair as I'm experiencing some other issues, so I've asked them to repair the screen as well.  From what I've read, it's likely they won't be able to fix it (in which case I'll be asking for a refund) but I'll see how it goes.

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

I've got a Thinkpad Yoga 20CD-0033US at Fry's Electronics. At almost 3 weeks of my purchase, I noticed using a desktop app that after 5 minutes, the screen starts "memorizing" the images that are static, like the explorer bar and the Start logo. This gets worst if the image has white and is big, because more time the image remains, more bold gets on the screen. I'm not sure if it's a driver problem or is about the build quality of the screen.I have to add than I'm very disappointed with the build quality of this computer. The one that I'm using is the SECOND ONE!, because the first stopped working at the third day, and this second one has design flaws, like a defective "B" letter and visible spaces between the screen and its housing. Very unacceptable for a $1300 laptop. If somebody has any software solution for my screen problem I would appreciate it, because I live outside the US and the technical service here in Colombia doesn't answer (sorry for my English).

Hey all, just thought I'd leave my 2 cents here. I bought a Thinkpad Yoga i7 version from the Microsoft store for a pretty decent price, knowing the potential issues it has but under the assurance of a 30 day warranty. It's an absolutely lovely laptop, and it knocks everything else out of the park in almost every regard... however after a couple days of using and constantly inspecting it for any issues, it began to display minor ghosting issues. With the checkerboard test, it showed a faint but long lasting retention (for a minute or two). Not only that, but I'm noticing a faint yellow splotch on the middle left portion of the screen.  I'm very disappointed with this because this machine is absolutely fantastic in every regard, but I'm almost certain I'm going to have to end up returning it within the next few days. I should note that I do have the SPB2 updated screen, so it seems that the new screen unfortunately doesn't resolve these issues. It's a shame for the computer to be so well built but have a poorly built screen to top it off. I'll hold onto the laptop for another week or so while I look for a suitable replacement, and see if the conditions worsen or plateau as it is now and let you guys know. It's sad to see such a wonderful machine to be plagued by such minor but deal-breaking issues, and I hope Lenovo can address them accordingly as they'll be producing one heck of a laptop.

Answer:Re: Thinkpad Yoga - ghosting / after-image / watermark issue

@dave - That are really bad news regarding the SPB2 panel.  In my case, It's been a week and a half since I got my first screen replacement, unfortunately spb1 model, and the ghosting in this one is much worse than in the previous one. It appears after one minute using chrome, and is stronger. On monday I will get my third screen, and then let's see what happens, but I am really disappointed whit this issue. That's not a matter of perception, I haven't seen so a strong ghosting in any modern device. It lasts for around 5 minutes to completely dissapear.Anyone here with experience getting a refund in Germany?Regards

I bought two ThinkPad Yogas for the Company i work for (First Lenovo products for us) and I really like the idea of the product. Beside the screen retention problem, our little experience with lenovo support and products wasn't according to Lenovo's reputation and our expectation in any way. We ordered both TPY (20CD0001GE: Digitizer, i7, SSD) via amazon germany (because of Lenovo's shipping delays). One of them had was noisy creaking around left and right palmrest area, especially when holding the device in one hand. Due to Lenovo's reputation we could not believe that this is a common issue and thought it is an unusual problem. I contacted Lenovo's support via phone. It was a problem to communicate with the really friendly lady, who seemed to be asian, because her german (I called the german support number and selected german in phone menu) wasn't good enough to understand the issue. She didn't understood the word creaking neither the german word for it. She offered me the solution to send the product to a repair center, without mentioning a usual duration for getting the TPY back. I am very sure she didn't understood the issue during the whole phone conversation. I decided not to take the offer and to get a replacement from amazon, which we got within two days. I don't think that is the way a customer should need to take (from Lenovo's point of view). After three days the new TPY started creaking as the first one. A few weeks later we realized the scree... How many days does it usually take to get an answer of Lenovo in the forums if somebody has got serious issues with their products? Of course i read the "Lenovo Community Participation Rules" but if my second experience with Lenovo's support hotline would be like the first one, it is useless to call them again...

Hello Folks,After having received a new Yoga 3 14 yesterday I noticed that there were a lot of screen ghosting issues, especially when using high contrast apps or leaving apps on the screen. Even when the system is booting the afterimages are there and persistent, and continue to build on top of each other. I have already rolled back and updated the graphics card, updated the BIOs, installed the firmware update to fix ghost touches etc. but the afterimages of chrome and the taskbar and explorer windows remain, only leaving the computer off for several hours solves but I don't believe that to be a pragmatic solution. If anyone else has had this issue or has fixed it please comment!

Hello everyone, I've had my TPY for three days now. It's been a fantastic little machine, running cool and quiet, performing like a champ. I'm a light user for the most part, but in that time, I've loved the feel of the machine, and I think it's a nice piece of kit. However, I know that the ghosting issue will eventually surface on the machine. I know that I'm the OCD type, and it'll bother me. I've already set my screen saver to kick in after one minute, trying to forestall the issue as long as possible. I try to limit the amount of time I have any one fixed image on the screen, but I know it'll happen (LG, you really dropped the ball on these panels). Currently, I have the three year warranty with depot service and accidental coverage. I called and tried to get my warranty upgraded to have on-site service, but they only offer that with two year or four year warranties. So, I'm trying to decide what to do, and I'd appreciate the advice and insight of other TPY and Lenovo laptop owners. This is my first Lenovo, so I'm unfamiliar with the quality of their service, especially regarding issues like this. Should I: Keep the TPY, accept the ghosting issue, and just stick with the warranty I have, even knowing I'll have to send the laptop in when the ghosting gets too annoying for me to deal with, or when I know updated, fixed panels are available. Keep the TPY, accept the ghosting issue, but change my warranty to the two-year with the on-site ser... Answer:Thinkpad Yoga - Ghosting Advice

Hello all,  Ultimately, I decided to return the TPY. I've been through RMAs before with other machines, and I just couldn't stand the thought of doing this to myself again. It's gone back in the box, and will be shipped back tomorrow.  If there are any Lenovo reps reading who would like to pass some feedback to their higher-ups, please take a moment to read the following.  The overall design of the Thinkpad Yoga is brilliant. In the short time I've had with it, I loved the feel of the machine, and if it didn't have this issue, I would have been extremely happy with my purchase. I'm actually quite sad to be sending it back, even with a full refund...I would much rather have had a working version of this computer. The billing and return process thus far has been excellent, and I'm satisfied with how it's being handled. Kudos to you for having a great return policy. Please resolve this issue with the Thinkpad Yoga. If several months down the road, I learn this issue is resolved completely, I'd be very inclined to buy one of these laptops again. Thank you.

Organizing this thread to consolidate comments of image persistence on Yoga 11s.

Image persistence or ghosting, in which an after image may develop when a high contrast screen image is maintained for a period of time and then the screen is switched to something else.   This usually is reported near the edges of screen when a toolbar or other static image is maintained for a long period of time.

The effect is not permanent and typically fades within a few seconds after the screen image changes.

Answer:Image persistence / ghosting on Yoga 11s

I was shutting down my computer today and Windows 8 was installing updates on a mostly blank blue screen.  When I looked at the bottom of the screen, I could see the faint burn-in of my taskbar icons.  A closer look at the screen showed that there were even a few desktop icons whose outline I could faintly make out against the blue screen. I didn't realize our screens were subject to such burn in?  Anyone else notice this?  Should I be moving my icons around on my desktop to keep the problem from getting worse?  Or do I simply have a defective screen?

I'm not sure, but if ghosting and after-images are apparent on the display, with a device still under warranty, is that covered? If so, will it cost?I've got a yoga that's having bad gosting and burn-in problems and I've yet to figure out if there's ways to fix it.And has there been a display revision or something? And if so, will replacing it under warranty change it to a new display?

Few months out of warranty, what are my options? The Lenovo support site just seems to send me in circles or ends in a 404 page not found in trying to find information on servicing/parts. If Lenovo can't help me, can anyone here let me know of a part number for the 1080p screen with Wacom digitizer so that I could try and aquire and fit the part myself. Thanks

Answer:ThinkPad Yoga S1 20CD-CT01WW Screen Ghosting

Good day and welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having difficulty.
Please have a look at your machine's FRU BOM: https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/tp_yoga_fru_bom_20150216.pdf
On page 3, there is a Displays and Touch Panels section. The first and last items in that section would seem to be the FHD panel with digitizer.

Using the first P/N (00HM910) on the maintenance parts site:http://www-304.ibm.com/shop/americas/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/default/PromotionDisplay?promoName=pa...
the item comes back as having units in stock.

I don't know how international ordering and shipping would work, but there is a phone number listed so that might help.

Regards.

I picked up a 13 inch FHD Lenovo Yoga 720 (720-13IKB) and love absolutely everything about it except some extremely bad ghosting / screen tearing. I first noticed it when I loaded up Spelunky, where it is incredibly obvious because of how fast the character can run left and right. I've tried everything to figure this out - adjusted Intel graphics settings, researched vsync settings, updated drivers, turned off Windows effects, played with executable compatibility settings, and so on and so forth. Nothing seems to help. I noted in the other "display issues" thread that the panel ended up being the culprit, a BOE panel. This panel is also a BOE - BOE06FA. I found one mention of this on notebookcheck regarding screen brightness. They note a "panel lottery" going on with this model, where some get LG panels and some are getting BOE panels. Everything else seems fine (no line). I would really love it if there were some fix I've overlooked, but I thought I would ask here if anyone else is experiencing this on this model, and if they've gotten it fixed if so. Is it possilbe to send it in for repair and request or get a different panel? Really, really don't want to have to return it, but also can't have a machine that will give me a headache playing Spelunky!

I had to send my X1 Yoga (20FQ) back for service as it reported a hardware fault. Sounds like it was due to a corrupt driver reporting a false positive. They had to reimage the laptop, so when I got it back I was starting from scratch. When I opened the Lenovo Companion App (I'm on Win 10 Pro 64), the home page (under the big "Optimise Your Thinkpad" button had this: Thinkpad X1 Carbon 4th This got me thinking - did they put the correct image on there? I hadn't noticed it when I first got it a month ago, so don't know what it said then. I didn't want to rebuild my system only to find it needed to be reimaged again. I called the repair centre, and they seemed to think it was correct - that that profile was the correct one for my serial number. They put me through to technical support, who thought I was correct - it was the wrong image. They sent me out a recover USB to try again. I've just done that (reimaged) and the Lenovo Companion App says the same thing. Given I got conflicting reports from Lenovo support I thought I'd try the forum here first - to see what other X1 Yoga owners have in their Lenovo Companion App. What does yours say? Maybe the X1 Yoga and X1 Carbon are so similar they can use the same image? Much Appreciated

Hello everybody, first of all, sorry for my english level, but i am french I will buy the new Thinkpad Yoga 12" 2015 model but i have a doubt regarding Windows System image recovery.I will install a lot of tools on the laptop, and i don't want to restore the laptop from the "recovey partition".So i used to proceed (on my old laptops) with the Microsoft internal tool named 'System Image Backup' . 1) Backup the system : As you know, you may create a System image backup (hosted on an external USB drive) with the Windows 8.1 internal tool named 'System Image Backup' tool .... it is very nice as you can backup your system  without using/buying a third-party tool. You may look at the website below to look how to proceed :http://www.thewindowsclub.com/create-restore-system-image-windows-8-1  2) Restore the system from the backup : On the same website (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/create-restore-system-image-windows-8-1), it seems that you may restore the system image without using a recovery media. In the 'system Image Recovery' part of this article, it is mentioned : "If you Windows computer fails to boot, then this System Image can came handy as it can help you get back control of your computer, as you can restore it, using Advanced Startup Options. To restore the System Image, power on your computer, and when it is booting, keep pressing F8 to see the Advanced boot options screen." So the guy who wrote this article doesn't m... Read more

Hello, everyone.  I'm attempting to deploy Windows 8.1 to a batch of Thinkpad Yoga using MDT 2013.  I'm PXE booting using the OneLink Pro Dock.  I have them set to UEFI mode.  I had to inject the ethernet drivers I found here: http://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/documents/ht101981 into the Out Of Box Drivers in MDT before it would work.  Now, my problem is that the Windows PE environment will only display at 640x480.  These laptops have 1920x1080 screens that are not being detected correctly.  I've done research, and there's supposed to be some problems with the GOP (Graphics Output Protocol) part of UEFI and Windows PE, but those problems all mention getting resolution set to the native resolution of the panel, which makes text too small.  I have the opposite problem.  I _WISH_ it was getting set to the native resolution.  As it is, I cannot make it through the imaging process, because I cannot see all the controls on the screen.  Has anyone else seen this problem?  I've got 35 of these things to get out to users.  Thanks

Answer:Deploy image to Thinkpad Yoga with MDT 2013 and WDS, screen resolution too low

Replying to my own post with more information.  So, MDT allows you to make a .wim file that you are supposed to import into WDS to boot after PXE does its thing.  It calls it "Lite Touch Windows PE".  I'm using the "x64" 64bit version. It will also take this file, and place it in a bootable .ISO that you can put on a USB drive.  I used a program called "Rufus" to make a USB drive that was bootable from UEFI.  I wrote that .ISO that MDT made onto a USB drive and booted the Thinkpad Yoga off of that, with the OneLink Pro dock still attached, and, strangely enough, the resolution gets set to 1920x1080 like it should.  I left the USB stick plugged in and PXE booted (again, using the same "Lite Touch Windows PE x64.wim"), and it again was 640x480.  Same _EXACT_ hardware configuration.  PXE boot = 640x480.  USB boot = 1920x1080. It would be awesome if someone at Lenovo could see if this is a problem with the ThinkPad Yoga UEFI firmware (I'm thinking it has to be somewhere in the GOP implementation).  I'm thinking of trying a post on Microsoft's forums as well, thinking this is something that's going wrong in WDS someplace, but I'm pretty confident this is Lenovo's problem, due to reports of UEFI PXE boot via OneLink Pro dock -> WDS -> Lite Touch Windows PE working just fine using the OneLink Pro dock with other models.

Tried searching this one here, no luck. I recent;ly purchased a Thinkpad Yoga 14 at Best Buy, from which I understand is a T400 so I hope I'm correct in posting in this section. I love the machine, however, after about a week it started developing a discolored region in the lower left corner: orange in color, circular in shape, about one half to three quarters of an inch in diameter. I searched the web and found for other devices, and solutions varying from returns to software based methods (of which I am dubious). Edit: I am noticing a slighter discoloration over a larger area in the lower left corner, barely discernable but it's there, as well as the very noticable circle. Before I return the device, I wanted to post here to get any input. Has anyone else experienced this and their solution?

Hi, my TPY had been working pretty well for several weeks but last few days I´m experiencing an annoying issue - the cooling fan doesn´t engage when TPY gets hot under load, even when the core gets to 100 degrees Celsius and all the bottom and right side of keyboard and palmrest is really very hot. The cooling fan seems OK, during BIOS update it engaged. There must have been some kind of recent "update" that messed it up. Any advices how to fix it, please? Thanks, Tomas from Prague P.S.: I´ve gone through the power management settings - the active cooling set on - no change. In the BIOS there´s no feature to control the cooling fan  :/

Hello All,  I wonder if anyone had any problems with NBD type warranty repairs? Long story short, one of our Thinkpads decided to fail, it has been raised with Lenovo Thinkpad service team, and diagnosed as faulty system board. As unit was still covered under NBD warranty, engineer request has been processed, and all nessesary parts dispatched so unit can be repaired. Unfortunately, 3 attempts to get engineer in has been done, and he did not showed up even once to repair unit! While working in a server enviroment (Windows Server 2008), the screen 'size' changes without reason, causing some of the functions of an application to not be accessible. For example, while using Microsoft word, if this occurs, the X to close the application will be completely off the screen. The resolution on the machine is currently set to 1280x768, as a preference to the user. This does not always occur right away, sometimes it happens within minutes of use, other times it may take hours. What could be the cause of this?

Hi, there I just brought a yoga to replace my mac book. Everything is fine except there is a two finger scroll issue. I use two fingers to scroll the webpage and when I lift one finger and try to use the other one to move the arrow, the touchpad still function as I am using two fingers to scroll. So now I have to fully lift two fingers from scrolling and then use one to touch the touch pad to navigate the arrow. This is really annoying and I never had this experince on my macbook touch pad. I have updated all drives and tried all options in mouse setting. Nothing can make this better. Any body any suggestions? Thanks a lot Matt

Hello, my Thinkpad Yoga touchpad has decided to entirely stop working. Here's what happened: A couple of days ago, I re-start my computer. On boot, I get a beep error saying something along the lines of "device not found" and another saying "device number not correct." Sorry if I don't remember the details, I didn't think it would be a big issue at the time. It told me to press escape to continue and enter to enter setup. I click continue. It boot up, yet my touchpad was entirely non-functional. Hi all, I'm new here. I've just got a ThinkPad Yoga (which is also my first ThinkPad laptop). The laptop comes standard with a 500GB mechanical HDD. I have tested all the functions and hardware, and everything works fine. Then I have replaced the 500GB HDD with a 256GB SSD, and made a clean install of Windows 8.1 with all the drivers and softwares from lenovo website. Here come two problems: 1. Some hotkeys do not work, e.g. wi-fi switch (same physical key F8). After quick research I have learned that I need to install the driver "Hotkey Features Integration". However, I cannot find this driver in ThinkPad Yoga page of Lenovo Website. Maybe Lenovo hasn't uploaded the driver yet. 2. When the screen goes off automatically, I cannot bring the screen back again. I tried to press every keys, click touchpad and click external mouse. The only way I can bring the screen back is to close the lid and let the laptop to sleep, and wake it up again. Both problems did not exist with the 500GB HDD and Lenovo preinstalled OS. So I think these problems are caused by driver/utility missing. But Lenovo hasn't uploaded all the drivers to the website yet.

Anyone got an issue with the keyboard? Sometimes when I type using the keyboard, it make a sound, coming from the speaker. I have no idea what happen. The keyboard function as normal, apart from making random noise through the speaker somehow. And it happens for the alphabet buttons only. I tried to pinpoint what makes the noise and if certain buttons trigger it, but so far, looks like it is random and any button can trigger it.

Hi, I am doing a project which needs to be done in landscape. I originally started the project in Word as I prefer it over Publisher but it gets difficult when your working with lots of pages moving pages around and inserting and deleting them and so forth so I have moved to Publisher before it gets too complicated. I am using a watermark background effect in word by going to Format > Background > Printed Watermark and I want to still use this in Publisher on all my pages. I went to Format > Background > More Backgrounds.. and then clicked on the Picture Tab. When I applied the image I got a tiled effect with the picture duplicated all over the page instead of the centered watermark one I was looking for, see the snapshot below to see what I mean. Can anyone explain how to get it looking the same as before, I use Word & Publisher 2002.

Thankyou for any replies, please post back ASAP because the project has to be given in on Wednesday (16th).

Hello everyone. Since having installed windows 10 and updating to latest conexant audio driver (8.66.16.50) from windows update, I have once and a while an issue: After starting the computer, every app that uses audio forces closes, and is unable to playback any audio. Examples: video players (potplayer), audio player (foobar), internet players (shockwave in chrome). The only solution is to reboot the computer. More often, the computer starts without issue, and then the whole session goes normally with audio playback until shutting off. I found a windows error message, in the logs, telling that conexant smartaudio service has failed to launch. Indeed, at startup, a service call "conexant smartaudio service" tries to launch Sasrv.exe in system32 and fails, because that same file is located in sysWOW64, not in system32. An other error found in the logs is about a failing app "C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUDIODG.EXE" and a failing module "C:\WINDOWS\system32\CX64BP16.dll". Obviously, I already had the audio driver uninstalled, the computer rebooted, the driver reinstalled (same version from lenovo this time), and the computer rebooted. Issue still persists.

Strangely enough, the current driver being used for the thinkpads (and presumably all tablet pc's) comes under their 'Legacy' drivers section!

I have been asked to see if I can obtain some advice on the Calibration tool for the ThinkPad Yoga on Windows 7. The query comes from someone setting up the Yoga as the standard devices for a large number of people.  Corporate policy means Windows 7 Enterprise is the OS in place. The issue they have is wishing to allow standard users who do not have any local administrative permissions the ability to run the calibrartion tool which appears to allow only those with administrative permissions to do so? Any suggestions?

When a Windows 8 ThinkPad Yoga is connected to a ThinkPad OneLink Pro Dock (Model DU9033S1) which has a sound cable placed into its headphone jack, every few seconds the sound will alternate between the laptop speakers and the docking station. It appears that the connection to the docking station is briefly lost (sound comes from laptop speakers), and then re-established (sound goes to docking station). However, during this "disconnect/connect", all other aspects of the docking station are unaffected (video, network, USB).

Updating BIOS, audio drivers, dock drivers & firmware have had no impact. If sound cable is removed from dock, then behaves normally (sound goes to dock only). Happens with multiple Thinkpad Yogas and multiple docking stations.

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 15 Graphic Card issue (geforce 840m)

Hi GijsDros, welcome to the forums.

Just in case have you tried to update the NVidia Geforce drivers in Windows 10? Maybe it can work out.

To update drivers on a Thinkpad I always recommend:
1) Try first Windows Update and update all the drivers and Patches
2) Try Lenovo System Update to get any new/missing drivers.
3) Try to install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows App Store, Lenovo Companion also has a "update driver search"
4) Sometimes all that software does not recognize some updated / missing driver. Check Lenovo's Support Site and search for your specific model drivers.

There is this NVidia Driver on the support site of you model:
NVIDIA Optimus Display Driverver. 10.18.13.5435 / 20.19.15.4312 from 17/12/2015

But updating with driver with the one on the NVidia site does not gives me any conflic, so if you still have issues with that driver, you may try the NVidia page.

Let's hope this can help you.

Hi,

Can anyone suggest me an Image Optimizer desktop software which have the feature of watermark. Actually I want to reduce the image file size from 1.5MB to 50-70KB, without reducing images quality. I also want to put watermark on the images. So the software must have both features.

Free software is preferred.

Thanks in Advance.

Answer:Image Optimizer plus Watermark Desktop Software?

"Actually I want to reduce the image file size from 1.5MB to 50-70KB, without reducing images quality"

That degree of filesize reduction on images cannot be achieved without some degree of image data loss.

I'm looking for a program that can add a watermark to images in bulk. This isn't the standard watermark where it is overlayed onto the existing image. I want to be able to add, say, 50px to the bottom of the image canvas and write the watermark there on the new white space.Freeware would be nice but anything will do.

I've created a Word template that has a 72 dpi (low res) full-page watermark image set in the background. This document, with no text or anything, is 76 kb.

If I paste in a couple pages of text and save it on a PC, it balloons up to almost 2 megs. If I flow in the same copy and save it on a Mac, the filesize is only 92 kb. The two files are exactly the same except for the fact that one is saved on a PC (I've tried with both Word XP and Word 2000) and one is saved on the Mac.

So why would the file size expand that much on the PC? Is the PC having to duplicate the watermark for each page, thus bumping the filesize up?

m19

Answer:Word + watermark image + text = big file

To test a bit more, I took the 2 MB file and saved it as a PDF, with the resulting file ending up at a nicely tiny 60 kb. Something's up, and Word's at fault... I just can't figure out why.

Hi,I recently purchased Thinkpad X1 yoga (1 Gen) machine with 16Gb Ram, 512GB SSD & WQHD IPS (Not even OLED) display with windows 10 pro 64 bit OS.My laptop battery is draining fast and only last for 4 to 5 hours with normal browsing & usage with 60-75% brightness (even reducing it to 50% doesn't give much improvement) and in Power save mode. As per Lenovo it should last for 9 to 11 hours but in reality it is no where near to it. I had also looked at similar issues that has been raised in this forum by other users as well. But I strongly feel that a top brand like Lenovo/Thinkpad doesn't cheat customers by giving false promises for the battery life of  9 to 11 hours without their internal testing, also I feel they would have not be claiming this (9 to 11 hrs) battery life by keeping their screen brightness to dark i.e. less than 50% or 25%. So i thought i could dig deeper to find out the problem. After my initial analysis using powercfg.exe command tool for sleepstudy, the report (i.e. https://ibb.co/hzob7F) shows me some a Ghost application called "Unknown [None]" which comsumes more power and I guess this is the culprit that cases the battery to drain faster. Looks like this Ghost appid takes around 60% of the power compared with all the other appid.  But not sure how to identify this Ghost appid. I have also posted my query in Microsoft forum but yet to get an reply.https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-othe... Hello everyone, I have a new Yoga 11, fresh from the retailer. While using it, I noticed that the display tends to image ghosting. If I use the Office Apps for some minutes (~15) and switch to the Metro view, the display shows ghost images on about 1cm from the display's rim inwards. So, is it a quality issue that needs a repair or is it so common that nobody cares? GreetsNils

Hello everyone.
I teach students in conferences over the computer who are too sick to go to school or are having surgery.
I usually broadcast my screen live with Screenleap. In Florida, we don't have enough funding to have fiber optic speed or good enough computers to use Twitch or I would live stream my face on the bottom of the screen.
At the very least, I'd like to "pin" my photo in one of the corners of my screen as I broadcast live while showing them how to do math, etc.
Is there a Windows 10 app that does this? Or a manual way to do this?
Thank you,

We have recently purchased a few thinkpad edge laptops. We planned on getting one laptop setup and confgiured and taking a Ghost of the disk to clone to the rest of the machines. However the laptop hangs at the thinkpad bios screen. I saw for some older thinkpads that a special option when making the image would fix the issue. Also we noticed that the laptop had a weird 1.5gb partition before the windows one. Has anybody gotten this to work before? Or does anyone have a tool that they have used successfully.Note: We had an image of a pervious batch of thinkpad edges that would ghost fine. Over the past several years there are many posts of users experiencing variations on this problem with X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga of various generations, including the latest ones (I provide a list below). That is, the systems often cannot come out of sleep mode in some way, shape, or form. I had this problem on my own brand-new X1 Carbon 5th Generation, right out of the box. In my instance, I noticed this issue in the following two scenarios: -After having gone in to sleep mode, once I opened the lid, or press power button once:power light goes from blinking to solid onscreen stays blank/blackseems that if the machine is going to be in the frozen state, keyboard presses do not "unsleep" it (which they normally would). Closing the lid causes the power light to go to solid on, but then opening it again does nothing.in a couple of rarer instances, the machine actually did come out of sleep but then instantly the screen froze (but this was quite uncommon, mostly it just wouldn't come out of sleep at all)-After passing the initial boot screen of Lenovo, the next part shows the Lenovo logo but without the swirling dots and is frozen (the power light would show on)Under both conditions: The power light is solid onThe keyboard lights functionality works: backlighting, FnLock light, mute lightSometimes you can hear the fan workingPlugging in to external display does not display anything on itThe only way to rectify is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power key With... Has anyone been able to successfully create an XP image of a T500 and push it?  I can create the image, though not sure if it is corrupt because i havent been able to successfully boot up into XP from a ghosted machine.  The PC that i created the image from runs just fine with XP installed.  I keep reading about issues with the Intel AMT and Turbo Memory card but after disalbing the AMT in the bios and noticing that XP has nothing to do with a turbo memory card, i now have no other leads as to what could be causing this issue. The first time i booted up i got these two errors: PCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0008hPCI System Error on Bus/Device/Function 0100h Second time i booted up it got through the bios, past the lenovo splash, and then nothing.  A blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner of the screen.  CAN ANYONE HELP!!!!????!!!!!

yes i did by using ghost console suite 2 .0 enterprise if you have the same version it should work the best i can suggest is to install ghost client on the machine first , this will detect the network template, and if your network template are already set in the ghost console , you will be able to push an image or create an image Sylvain Gagné

Say I had a Dell gx 240 and a Dell gx 270, both running xp. The 240 machine dies and I lost my xp disk. All I have is a Ghost image of the 270 machine. Could I boot the 270 HDD in place of the 240 HDD so it loads 240 chipsets and drivers, then make a new image from the 270 HDD compatible with the 240 HDD?

This may sound confusing but its the only way i can explain it. I really need help here.

Answer:need help with Ghosting image and hardware

It might not boot. You'll probably get a BSOD since the hardware is different, but you can always try it.
I recommend just calling Dell. Tell them the service tag number on the 270 and they'll likely let you buy a recovery CD for a small fee.

OK I will start from that I have Doubled image in 30fps games ,I've tried different monitor,CPU,MOBO nothing helped . I'm trying to solve this but can't find the right answer . Many suggested ,reinstall new drivers(which is stupid in my opinion) change monitor because it's broken or said that this is common thing having ghosting in LCDs or change HDMI cable,I almost believed in that my monitor is really broken ,but recently I found this video which confirms that my monitor is not broken and this has something to do with the PC hardware or even Graphics card because I can see this ghosting recorded by another person. here is the pictures and video

this video shows ghosting playing at 30FPS (watch from 0m38s and pause the video every second )

same game on different hardware no ghosting detected (watch from 0m40s)

it's really annoying because of this . Usually I'm playing with a controller on my PC ,with analog stick I move camera slower than with K&M and the ghosting effect is much more noticeable than moving with mouse left-right in a second . anybody has any explanations on this matter ? I repeat my self again my monitor is OK I did some digging it has 3.5ms response time . Playing games at 30-40fps it's a pain to watch ,the image is not clear all objects are doubled .

Answer:Doubled image (ghosting)... why?

Can you confirm that you're running on progressive resolution not interlaced mode? seems like common problem with interlaced display. check your nvidia control panel or ati catalyst for the display resolution, and if necessary, try to go for lower progressive resolution to check whether the ghosting persists. hope this helps.

Instead light in keyboard buttons (fnlink etc.) keep being lit and the red power lamp blinks slowly. The laptop does not respond om anything except a hard reset (holding power button) Secondly I see that the screen has quite a lot og ghosting/burn-in, especially when I look at a gray-ish background, where previous applications can still be seen on the screen (outline of chrome etc). I have read that this is a common problem with this laptop, but I didn't really see a solution other than sending it to Lenovo, but it out of warranty so I guess this is not and option?  Hope you can help med out Best Regards Lynge

I bought an X240 a week or two ago and for the first time noticed that it has very bad ghosting (also known as image retention or burn-in), especially on the edges of the screen.  See linked pictures below (easier to see if you zoom out, but the checkerboard pattern impossible to miss from any zoom).

Image 1: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6625784/ghost1.jpg (this shows a ghosted tab from my Chrome browser, which stayed on the screen for about 10 minutes. It is MUCH more noticeable in person--the fact that I was even able to capture it in a picture shows how bad it is in person).

Image 2: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6625784/ghost4.jpg (this is a picture I took after running the image retention test at http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html.  You can see a checkerboard pattern across the screen which is ESPECIALLY bad at the screen edges).

I have read that image retention issues get worse with time... and this laptop is only about 2 weeks old!

Any thoughts or advice, other than trying to return or exchange it?

Answer:Bad ghosting / image retention on X240

FHD LCD on the X240? It will get slightly worse few weeks into the usage. You can try returning it, but i think there is a good chance that this is an unavoidable issue.

If I have anything bright on the screen for more than a minute I can see it when I shift over to a dark solid color. It goes away after a minute or if I turn the screen off. Is this acceptable or should I go through the warranty process? I love this machine other than that!

After ghosting to new SATA drive I was not able to run PDF Convertor 6 (by Nuance) under XP pro although everything else worked. At one time it asked me to reregister my 100% legal copy. The support staff of Nuance UK and South Africa agents for same have apparantly left the planet at this time also (to add to my woes).I was not trying to pirate the PDF Convertor program but just to upgrade my office drive. If they are so good as to pickup that ghosting occured why can't they pickup their telephone?????????????????????????????????

Answer:PDF convertor 6 not work after Ghosting image

Yep. Some of the ways a program can be protected get quite tricky. The protection may be tied to a number of things that can't be cloned. I guess it could be that you could try to clone it again and then check the copy wtih verify after clone. Get a new pdf converter software would most likely be the solution. Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

We got a bunch of these IBM T43 laptops in at work. I wiped one and installed Windows XP from scratch, did all of the usual stuff, Windows Update, configured it how they want it, etc. to prepare it for making a base image. I sysprepped it and made the .gho image and placed it on our Ghost server. Friday I pulled a new T43 out of the box and booted from a Ghost boot CD, started network services, mapped the network drive, restored from a .gho image, from image to disk... it went through its imaging process and said it cloned it successfully. After rebooting the laptop though all I get is a blinking underscore on a blank screen. I tried re-ghosting the image for the heck of it, same results. I even used the Ghost boot CD to check the .gho image and it passed the test. Any ideas? Same laptop model, same hard drive size, specs, etc.

Bad image possibly? I have an image before sysprep also, wondering if I should try restoring that one and then sysprep it after it comes up/reboot.

I have a thinkpad yoga that is still until warranty until July It recently developed an issue in which I think the touchpad is a bit lose... but my biggest concern is that when I followed the links for a warranty repair to managed technical support access I created an account with my laptop serial number and created a ticket. A week later nobody called to contact me about the issue. I checked the web site and my ticket had been CANCELLED with no email or phone call/message. I put in another request today and again in the problem description it says "PRODUCT IS NOT A LENOVO PRODUCT, OPEN CALL IN THE SR TOOL." Whatever that meansI guess tomorrow I will call but sheesh what is wrong here?  Not only is the laptop not working bu **bleep** seems neither is the way to report an in warranty problem.

Hello,I have seen quite a few people complaining about their R13's display showing signs of image retention but no dedicated discussion thread, so here's one.Image retention, also known as ghosting, is a problem affecting some displays where images get temporary imprinted on the screen if displayed for a certain amount of time.I invite all R13 owners to test their display by setting brightness to maximum and displaying an image with high contrast patterns for around a minute and then switching to a neutral image (plain grey for example). Here's a link to a website performing this very test:http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.htmlIf after leaving the pattern on display at full brightness for at least 30 seconds / 1 minute, it remains noticeable after switching to the grey background, the display suffers from image retention.Mine shows image retention on the edges for about a minute after displaying the grid for as little as 30 seconds. How many R13 owners are suffering from this problem?

Answer:Aspire R13 (R7-371T) Image retention / Ghosting

I have had the same issue, and unfortunately I am past the return period.  I spoke with Acer support, and they gave me the usual 'send it in, we'll take a look'.   I use my laptop every day and cannot afford to not have it for 7 to 10 business days.   I had a feeling that others would have the same problem!  We should let Acer know, because it seems they are not aware this is a serious problem with the R13.  By the way, I have the FHD (1920x1280) IPS display.  The R 13 has the option of a QHD screen as well, and I don't think the problem exists on that screen.  Perhaps Acer would consider replacing our screens with the QHD version if this problem cannot be fixed?   Amar

I've had this system for around three weeks now and I can say that, while not terribly bothersome, the ghosting issue is definitely present and always makes me a bit concerned when using the device for long periods as I've heard some things about the retention growing worse over time. With that considered, I've two questions. The foremost is to what degree does the image retention grow worse over time, and how severe is it likely to become on a system that is used 6 or 7 days every week and anwhere from 2-5 hours each of those days? Secondly, I've heard that newer systems are shipping with screens that do not display any sort of retention problem and that service centers have such screens available. Would it be possible to obtain a replacement screen, which doesn't experience the retention issue, that I could simply swap myself? I would prefer not to have to send my laptop to a service center because I have a very regular need for it and couldn't spare it for more than a few days during the upcoming holidays. I have quite a considerable amount of experience working with such devices and making FRU swaps, and am confident that I could make the swap (assuming that the process isn't too particularly difficult), especially with reference materials to guide myself. Any feedback or information is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Images of previously viewed screens persist for several minutes in the background of new screens.  If I start a game (full-screen mode) that is set to use the NVidia graphics, I still see those previous screen images for several minutes.  After that time, I see no image ghosting in the game.I have found references to this issue in V13 series.  Has anyone else seen this problem on the V17 and found a solution?

I recently purchased a T440s with FHD touchscreen. I'm running Windows 8.1 and observing some screen burn-in / ghosting / image persistance. What I mean by this is the following. Suppose I have a window open (e.g., browser window), and leave it open for some time (e.g., 15 minutes). When I minimize the window, I occassionally still see a faint version of the previously maximized window which persists for a while, and eventually goes away. This leads me to think my display might have issues. Is anyone else observing this? I have Intel HD Graphics 4400, and I'm using driver version 10.18.10.3412. I see that there are newer 4400 drivers available on Intel's website, but I'm hesitant to go that route because I haven't seen any other people with this issue so it makes me think that it's not a driver issue.

Watermark Tool is the free online watermarking software that allows you to add watermark effect to your images quickly and easily. You can also personalize your images in a variety of ways - including text size, color, and position.
For people with photoshop, illustrator, or other advanced graphical software, applying watermarks isn't very difficult. However, many people don't have these kinds of tools, which means that their images can't be photoshopped without more advanced computer knowledge and extra hassle. With this website, anybody can apply personalized watermarks quickly and without needing to know anything about graphic manipulating software. Even people with advanced graphical know-how will probably find that this site's process to be a quicker and easier solution than opening Photoshop and creating a watermark from scratch.

If you want to remove watermark from the Windows 8 RP desktop, you can use this Watermak Editor. It even lets you change the watermark if you want.
I used it and rebooted my computer and the watermark had disappeared.

In reading other posts I have not seen the issue I am having addressed. I have an issue on my monitor where I get ghosting occasionally. I have not been able to find any pattern that causes it, and it just goes away after an hour or two without me doing anything. Restarting does not help nor does turning the monitor off and back on. Any ideas on what causes this or what to do to resolve? I do not have any electronics plugged in next to it that are closer than about a foot. Below is an image for reference if needed:

Answer:Monitor Ghosting Issue

Have you tried the monitor on a different PC? Everytime I've seen ghosting, it's due to a video card approaching death. If you have a video card, and onboard video also, try removing the card and using the on board video. Any games won't run as well, but you'll probably no longer have the 'ghost in the machine'.

I have a Thinkpad X61 tablet, and an old Thinkpad 240.  I recently tried to restore a ghosted image to my TP240 HDD, using it as an external USB drive on a 3rd, non IBM/Lenovo, laptop, (as my external floppy for my TP240 has stopped working, and it doesn't support booting from USB) and ever since then the HDD has been unreadable in the TP240 (read I/O error with HDD smiley face), although still operates fine as an external HDD.  After many hours of searching, I came across the anomaly whereby IBM BIOS reports HDD's as 240 heads, rather than the more usual 255 (an anomaly shared by HP/Compaq laptops, I believe), so I think that my external manipulations may have messed with the geometry, and I now have now way of booting the TP240. Before I go through the considerable effort of getting my X61 to boot to DOS with USB HDD support from a USB pen drive (which my initial attempts lead me to believe will be far from straightforward), in the hope that the disc geometry will be preserved by working at this low level, does anyone know if and when this BIOS anomaly was fixed, or whether there's a chance that my plan might work.  Moderator note: Type added to subject line for clarity. ThanksMessage Edited by Agotthelf on 10-05-2009 11:06 AM

Hi,

When I connect Thinkpad Yoga (model 20CD00B1US) to the onelink dock, the stylus stops working.

In order to enable the stylus and Wacom driver following 2 options/ workarounds:
1)  Manually stop and restart the Wacom ISD Service
2) or reboot the machine while the Onelink dock is attached.

I'm using the latest 7.2.0-4 Wacom driver version, all latest lenovo software installed installed on the machine.

Both above mentioned workarounds are ugly, does anybody have a better suggestion to fix this issue?

Had the same issue - a BIOS update just release about a week ago fixed it for me.

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Hello, I am looking for a laptop which can be securely attached/locked (so that I can let it during the night in the office). Could you please tell me if the following laptops have a security slot (Kensington or similar) to attach it somewhere?THINKPAD X1 CARBON (5TH GEN)THINKPAD X1 YOGA (2ND GEN) I do not find it described in the specifications, but from the available pictures, it seems that they have some kind of security slot. Thanks!

I'm having a weird problem in all of my applications -- office, Explorer, Firefox, you name it. The clean screen as it originally appears becomes corrupted by other imposter versions of it. Basically parts of the screen (could be parts of a paragraph, toolbar or half the screen), reappear overlayed across the original. It becomes so un-workable that I often lose the cursor and have to close the application altogether -often every five minutes.

I have tried disconnecting the internet, it still happens. Some other facts:
-It's an Hp Probook 4520s, bought August 2010 (still under warranty)
-it's been going on for about 4 months
-it's getting progressively worse
-I took it to an IT specialist shop and they couldn't fix it without doing a total reinstall (which I'm trying to avoid)
-I can't seem to 'trigger' it. I sat at the IT store for two hours and couldn't make the issue arise (Murphy's Law)

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

Answer:Ghosting effect in Applications - Graphics Card Issue?

Hi bellaflicka and Welcome to TSF,

This issue normally appears when there's not enough graphics memory and/or RAM to handle the applications you have open. While it's most likely a software issue it could swell be a hardware issue.

Please try booting into safe mode (Press F8 during startup > Safemode with networking. If it's working fine in safe mode, it's most likely a software issue. And if so I would recommend you to;

1. Boot into normal mode again, make sure all drivers are up to date, if not, install/update.
2. Start > Search > Msconfig.
3. Disable everything under startup except for Windows services.
4. Reboot, see if problem persists.

If the problem persists in safe mode it's most likely a hardware fault.
Get back to us with the results above for further troubleshooting.
