I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This particular model has two of these indicators, one on the back of the lid, and another next to the keyboard. The one next to the keyboard still works fine, but the one on the back of the lid stopped working altogether in the past day or so. This laptop is only a month old, so I suspect it's a software malfunction and not faulty hardware. It would be nice to get this handy little feature back. Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad logo "i" LED indicator stopped working on ThinkPad Twist (S230U)

take the hdd out and start the laptop without the hdd, if the LED light doesn't come on then you have a hardware problem.

When I tried to update win8.1 updates KB3000850, it failed via auto-update or installation. Follow the Microsoft guide to restart laptop into safe mode, installation failed also. Then I chose safe mode with minimum way to restart laptop. Then laptop halted down at Lenovo logo.At first, I thought bios is modified by windows8.1(x64) and it can't load any hard disk to boot. With a couple of days test, I found a way to flash BIOS at very beginning of laptop boot. BIOS can be updated. But there is still no startup option to set boot sequence. My laptop is still halted down at Lenovo logo, same as BIOS update. I can only access bios by keeping real clock error which I generated by clearing BIOS.if no real clock error, i can't access bios. And f1 and f12 doesn't work. I'm new to the laptop scene (always had built desktops and a tablet). For the most part I love my ThinkPad, except 2 things. The soldered RAM, and the fan is loud. I've read Lenovo factory clocks fan settings slightly higher than other manufacturers, and that increased noise can be appreciated. My problem is the slight rattling or uneven hum that the machine emits. That just sounds like a cheap fan. My question is about the availability of laptop replacement parts. Since my 4gb of RAM is soldered to the m-board, can I, or possibly in the future, buy a new motherboard with 8gb of RAM soldered on? I've read the battery is not replacable as well? If so is it attached to the moboard as well. Then replacing the whole thing could be the triple threat upgrade down the road when my battery life is diminishing! Any experience on the matter is appreciated!Elle

So I have a Thinkpad Twist S230u and I recently updated it to Windows 10. After 3 days, I turn it on again and a black screen just goes through. I replaced the hard drive with a Terabyte of SSD but it does not turn on?? No sound is made. When the old hard drive was in there, everytime I pressed the power button, a small "zzzz" sound is played from inside the computer.  Assuming the computer is dead, and it is also out of warrarnty, should I sell it for spare parts? How much should I list it? I spent a 1000 dollars on this computer and dont want it to go to waste after i bought it in 2014.

Answer:Thinkpad Twist s230u N3C29MS

WWAN 3G modem is optional upgrade, but it occupies the same slot as the mSATA. As far i know, if you have Win 8 and platter hdd, the WWAN slot would have a 24 gigs or 32 gis mSATA card in it. Widi is supported on the Intel wireless-n 2200 wireless card.http://www.thinkscopes.com/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-twist-review/i this review a while back, not the most detail since i only had a very brief look at the machine.

The problem is that when the computer turns on, it makes a loud series of 5 beeps, followed by a pause, and then 5 more loud beeps. Additionally, the auto-rotate feature is horrible and doesn't seem to work. Everything else works fine. However, I read in your community that I should update the BIOS to resolve both the beeping issue as well as the auto-rotate issue. I tried updating the BIOS using the Windows 8.1 Utility to do so, however it fails at the READ step. On your community, someone said that there is a Security setting that can be disabled in BIOS to get rid of the beeps. However, I'm also finding that if I try to load the BIOS settings (Press Enter at the Lenovo screen, press F1), the screen simply displays black and nothing ever comes up, therefore I can't get to BIOS settings to do anything. I should mention that I'm not using an external display in this scenario, as I realize that sometimes external displays are not able to display the BIOS due to low resolution. Summary: Loud Beeps & Terrible Auto-Rotate, Can't Update BIOS, Can't get into BIOS to change settings, everything else is working okay. Ideas? OS: Windows 8.1

First, I will clarily that this post it not related to other posts where either: users have complained about their laptops not powering n after  going to sleep; orwere looking for infomation on how to configure the laptop to run with the lid closed. My set up: ThinkPad s230u 3347-CT0 on a Lenovo Easy Reach Monitor stand with the lid closed and connected to an ASUS 23.6" monitor via mini HDMI on the Twist.  I am running Windows 8.0 and have gone into the Control Panel > Power Options and set the Close Lid action to Do Nothing. Everything is functioning as I would expect until I try to turn the laptop on after it has been completely powered off.  Once powered off and the lid closed, when I press the power button on the right side of the laptop screen to power on, nothing happens.  Because the laptop lid is closed and tucked nicely under where the monitor sits on the monitor stand, I have to lift the laptop lid about two inches, press the power button on the laptop, and then close the lid again. This is not a huge inconvenience but I thought I would see if anyone had experienced the same issue and found a resolution. I should note that I am not looking to purchase a docking station/port replicator. Thanks. -------------------- ** UPDATE **A temporary solution was to twitst my screen so that it is in tablet mode and then output to the external screen only - I also covered the screen with a cleaning cloth that came ... My HDD died suddenly a few weeks ago and took everything with it..Before that I had successfully updated from the original Win8 to 8.1 and later to Windows 10, never losing any functionality. With the new hard drive I now have performed the 3rd clean install, including one off the recovery files in the computer (was not aware of that funtion at first), with both 32-bit and 64-bit varieties, but I have been left every time without the touch-screen functionality of the system. The Device Mgr simply does not show any trace of a "HID compliant touch screen", neither hidden nor in the open.=> What drivers do I need to download (from where?) and install, to get the OS to "see" the hardware?I have tried the "System Interface Foundation" install, but without any visible success. Thank you

Answer:Thinkpad twist s230u - unknown devices

Hey there rpjonny,

This seems to be an ongoing issue with a few machines, and may be related to some the problems that are going on in this thread.

If you will, go to the Device manager. You will need to make the Unknown Devices visible, they will only show on Device Manager if Show Hidden Devices is checked. From here, run the system update on the solution center once more. This should identify them or give some indication to what they are. From the thread listed, as well as a few other threads, it seems that this is tied to the WiDI offered by Intel on some of the WiFi cards. It would be prudent to then go to the Intel and use their Intel Driver Update Utility. Hopefully this helps you.

Hello, I own a thinkpad twist s230u (3347 4HU) purchased 3 weeks ago. From the moment I turned it on, it has a major issue. The cursor goes on the right side of the screen, it flashes and it opens windows and applications itself whether it runs on desktop or on tablet mode. The problem appears every time I use the laptop and I can?t do anything. I can?t  write text anywhere due to the cursor flashing. Also most of the times that cursor flashes, the screen jitters too! I updated the bios system to 1.57 version so as most of the rest software including Atmel touch controller firmware update tool, Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, Auto Scroll Utility and many others. I also ran linux ubuntu from a usb flash memory but the problem still existed. So it is not a windows 8 or a driver failure. I noticed that few times when i  turn around the screen or I change screen?s angle, then the problem temporarily subsides for less than a minute. I am very disappointed and frustrated. I never expected to buy a Lenovo product with such a problem. Could anyone help me?

I have an older s230u Thinkpad Twist that I barely use anymore because it has become abysmally slow.  I just want something lightweight to take to work with me other than my 17.3 inch Alienware beast that always gets wicked stares, and weighs over 20lbs in the backpack with the PSU.   A couple years ago I freshly installed Windows 10 removing all previous partitions, installations etc.  In the past I have always been **bleep** about imaging new PCs with Acronis, but some reason I cannot find the original image on my dozens of external HDDs I have laying around.   I have multiple questions regarding this: FIrst, the 24gb inlcluded ssd - Since I did a bare windows installation on the main drive, with no original drivers/bloatware left in the laptop, is this drive even functioning anymore? How do I know?  How does it even work? (I am not very savvy on the whole "hybrid" thing)  Microcenter has a 256GB mSATA drive for $70, if I put this in, will it even do anything, and how do I get it to function?  I would just assume store/run my entire system on this drive if it were possible.  I see it  in the disk management when I open it up, but no idea how it is actually working, if it is even working.   I have been able to take the laptop apart enough to find the HDD/SSD slot and the mSATA slot, so the harware installation is not a problem for me.   Would I be better off replacing the main mechanical HDD... The Subject sort of explains itself, however I will add some more infromation for convenience sake: Generally speaking I think of myself as fairly knowlageble about computers and their hardware. When it comes to laptops however I'm not so knowlagable, thus I would like to get a professional oppinion on the subject of SSD for laptops. So I'm thinking of getting a Crucial m500 SSD (I'm so happy with my older m4 that I have full confidence in it's stability and speed) with 240GB of storage space, it comes in both mSATA and in the regular 2.5" x 7mm format. Thus I ask wheter or not to choose 2.5" or mSATA for my Thinkpad s230u Twist. It already has a 500Gb  Hitachi harddrive provided originaly by Lenovo, thus if I choose the mSATA I would be able to have a total of 740Gb of fast and reliable storage. What are your oppinions on such an installation? should I just go for mSATA or choose the regular 2.5" format? Rainmaker91 P.S: I should probably just inform that Lenovos solutions is not an option due to it's extreme price and the drives beeing outdated. Also I don't need the Lenovo warranty and support due to the "Warranty" provided by law in my country.

Answer:mSATA or 2.5" SSD for Lenovo Thinkpad s230u Twist?

Hello,

I personally would go with the mSATA SSD.  Although it might be a little slower in synthetic benchmarks because it uses less flash RAM chips?using many of those in parallel is what gives SSDs their high read and write rates?in real world usage it will be faster than any conventional rotating media disk drive.

You can then use the 500GB Hitachi HDD for data storage, less-frequently-used programs, backups and so forth.  When you are ready, you can replace that with a conventional 2.5" (but 7mm high) SSD and use the S230u as solely solid-state ultrabook.  Of course, you could then get an external 2.5" USB 3.0 hard disk drive enclosure and continue to use the Hitachi disk drive for backups.

Hey all, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist s230u with a 24GB SSD and 320GB HDD. Recently my pc had boot repair problems, and I had to reinstall windows 10. Thinking that this was the original location, I reinstalled windows 10 on the 24GB SSD using diskpart commands to reformat the SSD to ntfs, and removed the original windows 10 from the HDD. I also reformatted both hard drives as part of a clean install. Now I've done some research and found out that the 24GB SSD isn't meant to be used as a boot drive for windows 10 and is instead meant to be used as an SSD cache. After looking up how to perform SSD caching, I found that Lenovo used ExpressCache as the software to cache the SSD; however, it seems that the software doesn't provide support to this laptop in windows 10, only on windows 8.1. So my question therefore is, is there any other way for me to use this 24GB SSD as a cache? or perhaps ExpressCache software still works even though Lenovo Twist isn't included in the windows 10 version? Also, if I ended up just keeping the OS in the 24 GB SSD and using as a boot drive what would happen? Or am I SOL with this 24GB SSD?Thanks,

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Twist s230u SSD Cache Windows 10

Hello,

Lenovo does offer a version of ExpressCache for Windows 10 on its support web site, and it does list the ThinkPad S230u as a supported device:

Name:  ExpressCache Software for Windows 10 (64bit) - Laptop, ThinkCentre
URL:  http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds104444

This was for the initial release (RTM, Build 10240) of Windows 10 back in 2015, but it may still work with the current version (Build 15063) of Windows 10.

I recently got a refurbished ThinkPad Twist, and I was having issues with lagging - everything was taking forever, both web-based and local. Kept monitoring performance and nothing seemed amiss with memory or processing, nothing wrong with my internet connection. After a little digging I found that using Lenovo Solution Center solved my problem - it prompted me to update the BIOS, there was some kind of update related to power management, and there were some Windows patches. As soon as I did that everything was running as smooth as silk. Seems a little shady the refurb people wouldn't have done those updates since they came out before I got the laptop, but whatever, just glad I got it solved. I thought I was going to have to try a factory reset but no! I just wanted to share here since I spent a ridiculous amount of time winding my way through the labyrinthine Lenovo website, when all I had to do was go to Start and type "update." So if, like me, you're pissed off that your brand-new-to-you machine is faulty, do yourself a favor and try that first and see where it gets you. You can also do a hardware scan through Lenovo Solution Center - which it seems like if you just got a refurbished machine and the hardware scan didn't come out clean that would be a tip-off that they didn't do their due diligence in testing it.

I have a new s230u just received it 2 days ago and after about half a day the Charm bar stopped appearing while using swipe on touch (keyboard shortcut and mouse work fine).  Updated drivers, bios and received no help from tech support.  Attempted to calibrate touchpad then realized Microsoft states this calibration tool is intended for calibrating pens and not to be used for touch panels.  MS recommended a reset of calibration setting which I performed and the Charm bar came back with swipe for about 5 minutes!  Back to the same issue...  I have exhausted everything and seems that others have had this issue for quite some time.  How do you use this thing in tablet mode without access to the Charm???  You can't and it seems that Lenovo engineering should be addressing this issue.  Any suggestions before I return the machine for a refund?   Thanks!

I am having the opposite problem with my Thinkpad Twist s230u that most people are having with this laptop. Currently I have the power button assigned to "sleep" when plugged in or not. I find that when I press the power button, the computer indeed goes to sleep. However, at seemingly random times I find that it will power itself back on and waste battery until the battery level becomes critical, and it shuts down on its own due to low battery. I have observed this occur both when the laptop is just sitting on a table with the lid shut, opened, or when shut inside of a bag.  I have already installed the new BIOS update and power driver update mentioned in a previous post by another user, but the issue still occurs.  Let me know if there's more info needed to solve this!

Have been using newly purchased S239u ThinkPad Twist for 4 days.  The right side touchscreen gesturing to invoke charms menu no longer works (however works if use mouse in corner).  Also, gesturing from the bottom does not work.  Gesturing from the left side and top of screen does operate.  Taking unit back to store where purchased.  Anyone else have a similar problem like this?

Answer:Touchscreen gesture unresponsive in Thinkpad Twist S230u

Mine is unresponsive too. Compltely 100% unresponsive. Even after doing a complete reset and wipe of the hard drive. I  already sent it in twice now and Lenovo did not fix anything. I'm ready to sue lenovo for being in breach of warranty.

I have been trying to update my nearly year old Twist's BIOS since I have been having issues with random screen autorotation, and I also have the 5 beeps, pause, 5 beeps issue at boot up (it otherwise boots fine). When I run the Lenovo Flash BIOS Utility, either on its own or from within System Update, it cannot read the BIOS and eventually aborts. I downloaded the Bootable CD version, burned the ISO to first a USB flash drive and later a conventional CD, and neither worked.  I did reset the BIOS settings to legacy mode and turned Secure Boot off, and changed the boot order in order to get it to boot to the right media.  My system is trying to boot from the media as configured but is stating it is not bootable.  I followed the instructions on Lenovo's official drivers page to ensure I was doing it correctly. I'm currently running BIOS version 1.53 and Windows 8.1 Pro Preview. Any ideas?

Answer:Problems updating BIOS in Thinkpad Twist (s230u)

Solved the 5 beep issue by disabling the security chip in the BIOS. Still can't update the BIOS. I'm having issues with random screen autorotation, usually but not always in tablet mode, so I would like to update the BIOS. I'm getting Error 216 - can't read the BIOS. Anyone?

Hello, Several days ago my Lenovo Thinkpad Twist suddenly stopped connecting to the internet. I was at the cafe using my phone hotspot and everything was fine, but then when I got back home, it could not detect any wireless networks in my house. I thought it may have just been my wi-fi but my phone could connect to the wi-fi just fine. I tried plugging in my phone again for personal hotpot and it could detect my phone, but no longer connect to the internet (it'd say that it's connected, but no pages would load). I tried rebooting my computer, but the wireless networks still could not be found and my phone's hotspot could no longer help it connect to the internet. I tried a Malwarebytes Scan but that didn't detect anything, and my McAfee virus scanner is not gonna help me find anymore viruses (long story as to why I don't have a better virus protection). Can't really install any updates since I can't connect to the internet at all...rebooted several times to no avail... Any sort of help or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much! Sincerely,Ingrid

Hi, My Thinkpad Twist does not display anything when turned on except on external monitors. The Device manager shows a greyed out internal display icon, says it is not connected. 1. Could this be the power connect ribbon cable p/n DC002C003W00 have a fractured wire(s)? I have tested for open circuit between PWR1 and PWR2 connectors and there are 4 sequential pins which are open circuit. Is this normal? 2. The touch screen works 3. There appears to be absolutely no LED backlighting working 4. Is there a possible fix for this and if so is it the power cables or some physical problem with the ribbon cables OR is it definitely a new display that is needed using existing cables? Thanks in advance Andrew

Answer:Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on...

The last 4 pins on the connector are unused I have determined so it is not the power ribbon cable connector. I found two wires fractured in the LCD ribbon cable right at the point where it feeds through the twist mount. I expect this could be a common problem after use. After repairing these two wires it did not fix the screen problem. I have ordered a replacement LDVS ribbon cable and will report back once I have replaced that.

Hello everyone, So, I recently bought a ThinkPad Twist (specifically the 33472GU, even though outlet said 3347XF4) from the outlet to upgrade the laptop that I take to class and I have to make a few questions that I hope get answered. I haven't really seen much attention paid to this particular device and it saddens me to see the lack of attention that it has seen. In particular, I would have liked to see more response and helpfulness from Lenovo staff to address these concerns, but if anyone else has input, please let me know. Here is my list: 1.) It is true when they say the battery doesn't last long. I can barely squeeze 3/4 hours out of it depending on what I am doing. This is considering that I turned many of the settings down and even turned off things like bluetooth and windows 8 effects. How can Lenovo advertise 6/7 hours on this thing? No, my battery is not dead, in fact, it came with 46 mWh charge, better than what it was designed for (42 mWh). So I don't want to get sent to technical support to "fix" it. I want an honest answer and indication from staff that this issue is being taken seriously and addressed. 2.) With the above being said, is there a definitive answer from anyone about how I can extend my battery life to at least 5 hours without crippling the machine? I'm not willing to turn EVERYTHING off. That defeats the purpose of having bought the twist in the first place. 3.) Does anyone know when the Haswell version of the device is c... Read more

Answer:ThinkPad Twist s230u important questions regarding performance

I think our estimate of 3-4 hours of battery life is closer to real world if you are actively using the computer. From the many forum posts, I have come to believe that the only way to exceed 5 hours is to replace the hard drive with an SSD.  I have gotten such good performance after reinstalling from scratch and getting the msata working that it is hard for me to justify the $200 for extra battery life and the annoying pauses when the harddrive shock sensor is triggered. For me, this was a "you get what you paid for" situation.  I would have liked 8G of RAM and the i7 processor, but the i5 is acceptable.  The only way I think you will be satisfied is if you go SSD instead of the HD.  Good luck.

Hello Together, I got a new Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230u and want to install windows 8 without all preinstalled Software. But i cannot find any Recovery Disc/Partition and there is no Registration Key for Windwos 8 in the Package.... So, how can I extract the clean Windwos 8 Image to take it on an USB Stick and how do i get the Windows 8 Key? It used to be so easy.... Thanks for your Help!

Answer:Thinkpad Twist S230u: Install clean Windows 8

The key is embedded in the BIOS. You shouldn't need one.Anyway, you should be able to choose "Remove everything and reinstall Windows" from the start screen. Is easier... Only different.Cheers.

I've read a few posts of various people installing Windows 7 on their Twist., with varied results. One person I could recommend you speaking with is watersong. In his post, he described having a great deal of success with few issues. That thread can be found here.

If I may, any particular reason your considering the downgrade? And have you considered a dual boot options?

My twist has an issue with the trackpad. It has a clickpad and the lower part of it isn't very stable and can be pushed down easily and wobbles a bit. When I apply slight pressure to the bottom especially the left corner, it clicks, and sometimes even double or tripple clicks. Evem if I disable tapping this occurs so it is an issue with the clickpad. Its like not pressing down and feeling the click, just slightly touching the bottom so that the plastic goes a little bit downwards and it clicks twice even. This is extremely annoying. Overall I must say the touchpad of this computer feels very very cheap and sub par. Even my HP and ASUS netbooks have smaller but functional trackpads. Also when using the trackpad buttons at the bottom, the cursor will move slightly while pressing down the clickpad. Is there a mechanism or something that I can move in place below the touchpad to fix this?

Answer:Extremely annoying trackpad issue on Thinkpad Twist s230u. HELP

This is highly frustrating e.g whenever I click on a youtube video to pause, it goes into full screen due to double click. And please no one mention rubbish about drivers, its a hardware fault. And I'm away from the US for a long time on work in Africa there is no lenovo representative here.

Hi I have a Thinkpad Twist s230u and am having problems with connection of an external monitor/tv with an hdmi cable. The cable is brand new, as is the adaptor from hdm - hdmi-mini for the computer. I have turned on the tv and selected the correct hdmi input, then connected the hdmi-mini. when i right click on the desktop > screen resolution > detect; no displays are detected and i am left with only two options "Try to connect anyway on:VGA" and "Try to connect anyway on: Mobile PC display" neither of which do anything. It feels like this has got to do with an issue regarding the actual HDMI driver itself, but I'm not really sure what I'm looking for in this department. My graphics card is however updated and working correctly - Intel HD Graphics 4000. Can anyone offer any solutions? Thanks in advance.Chris

Answer:Thinkpad Twist s230u - problem with hdmi/external monitor

I'm having a similar problem. When I plug the HDMI cable into the laptop, the screen does a quick flash to black like normal, but there's no signal to the external monitor. After a few seconds, the monitor goes into "HDMI power saving mode." I've tried multiple cables, multiple adapters, and even tried hooking it up to an HDMI projection system at my office. Same result with everything--laptop acts like an external display has been connected, but there' s no picture at the destination. This used to work without a problem, so I don't know what's changed. I tried updating the display driver and even went back to Windows 8 and up to 8.1 again. Nothing. It's a huge problem because I travel and present for a living and some of the venues only have HDMI. I bought a minidisplay to HDMI adapter, but it would be nice to use the native port.

Hi there guys! First of all, it's my first time to post something here. Just recently purchased a Thinkpad Twist. However, after a few days, all of a sudden, I always get the error 2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HD). I'm not sure what exactly is the problem though because after a few minutes, when I restart, it'll load Windows 8 back and eventually after a few browsing and use of computer, will force restart stating there's a problem encountered, etc. Once it restarts, it gives the same 2100 error again. Please help me guys as I'm really frustrated. I can't seem to use the computer normally without force restart due to error and loading windows 8 thereafter due to 2100 error.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Twist S230U Touch Screen Not Working

Hello,

A few questions, in no particular order:

Are these new ThinkPad Twist S230u's?  Refurbished ones?  Old ones?
Can you let us know the machine type from the bottom of the unit(s)?  That's the part on the label that looks like 4321-XYZ (not the serial number, though --please don't post that online)
Did you purchase them directly from Lenovo?  If not, where did you get them from?
What operating system(s) are the S230u's running?

With the answers to those questions, I'm sure some of the forum members will be able to assist you in troubleshooting this further.

Is there an official list as to what Wireless Cards will work with the Lenovo Twist.  I know when they were sold you had two options of cards, and had to decide if you wanted the Intel which supported Miricast or the Broadcom version which supported 5Ghz. Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 BGN & BT 4)Thinkpad a/b/g/n Wireless & Bluetooth 4.0 (2x2 ABGN & BT 4.0) Now there are Intel Cards out that support all of the above such as the Advanced-N 6235, but I can find no information if this or any other Intel cards will work with the Thinkpad Twist.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I want to install Windows 8 using my own partition configuration, meaning where I'd get a C and a D drive. On my other computers, this is what I have and I really like this configuration. I want to install Windows 8 on the C drive and have all my data on D. I have reformatted and partitioned the HDD to C and D. When I slot in Windows 8 Enterprise to install, I keep getting this message "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one." What the machine keeps wanting is for me to delete both partitions and create its own partitions and I don't want this. I know it wants this because I have clicked delete of the partitions and looked to see what it would do. It ended up creating several of its own partitions (not at all how I want it). When I re-partitioned the drive back to C and D (2 partition config), it would repeat that same error message. Can someone please help tell me how do I install Windows 8 doing my own custom partition (C, D) where Win 8 is installed onto my choice of C and D is left for my data. Why does it keep saying, "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one"? Is it a settings in BIOS that I need to change to enable me to use my own partition? If so, what setting? I have never had these issues installing Win 8 using the C & D partition config on 3 other computers (not Lenovo S230u Twist). Thanks for your help!!! :-)

Answer:Thinkpad Twist S230u: Clean Install - Windows 8 on Custom Partition

Hello LightspeedX! I glad you wrote this issue cause i still having the same problem (and questions). I decided to put everithing down on my s230u because it is quietly irritant see a last generation porcessor like the I7 on a top plataform ultrabook running so slowly like our thinkpad do. Since the embed software and the poor resource planning is the resposable for that issue, i really cant imagine why Lenovo decide to bring all this things up together at this device. I realize that any cheap I3 china device is more confortable and "quickly" to run any software than this machine in his original state (factory defaults), so i decid to try a brand new and clean installation of windows 8 or (perhaps) a dual boot configuration using a linux frindly distro like ubuntu. At my own risc, like the cusummer service like to say, i will erase all HD and start this "saga" (making a full hard copy first, of course and will soon bring any results i found here.   Some interesting urls:Ubuntu on Yoga Ideapadhttp://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Installing_Ubuntu_12.10_on_Thinkpad_Twisthttp://www.ubuntu.com/certification/make/Lenovo/http://it.nmu.edu/news-article/lenovo-twist-s230u-screen-orientation-issueshttp://nerdanswer.com/answer.php?q=50276 Untill i got there, i wish you lucky because i doubt you can found any anwers from the "big fans" of Lenovo or there oficial costumer services!!!! Best Regards, Nilson

Hi, This problem came from a long story...First, my s230u started having problem waking up after the BIOS update in late September, so I followed the others' suggestions from this forum to downgrade my BIOS.  The hybernate problem fixed.  However, my screen rotation button then failed to function.  I checked the BIOS update webpage and found there was an update 1.61 which could help to solve this rotation button problem, but (1) there was no link anymore for the version 1.61, and (2) I'm afraid if I update my BIOS to 1.61, the wake-up problem will occur again.  My laptop functioned perfectly before the BIOS update in September (the BIOS update was automatically downloaded and installed).  Please help!!!  Thanks.

Hello all, I'm desperate here. I purchased my Twist from eBay and from that time I've had a battery issue. I was only getting approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes off a full charge before it died. I mostly just tolerated it and had to keep close to an outlet as I assumed the battery was just bad. In the last week I decided to do someting about it and bought a replacement battery, opened up my laptop, and replaced the old battery with the new one. Hopeful that my problem had now been remedied, you can imagine my disappointment when the issue was even slightly worse. Now I get an estimated 1:06 on a full charge. I installed BatteryBar and it tells me "Capacity: 13,870 mWh of 14,060 mWh" and "Battery Wear: 66.9% of 42,480 mHw". I'm running Windows 8.1. I've replaced the original hard drive with an SSD. I've installed the "Lenovo Settings Dependency Program" and "Lenovo Power Management Driver". I've tried changing power settings. Nothing works. A one hour battery life is just miserable. Can anyone provide some insight as to what may be done? I'd appreciate it.

Is it they do not like knowledgable customers and want to get rid of us?I have a Twist S230u 3347cto Thinkpad, BIOS is missing Serial and UUIDAfter upgrades of 24 GB to  Samsung 850 Evo 250GB mSATA and changing out the HDD for Samsung 850 Evo 500GB SSD, both cloned using a Sabrent EC-HDD2 docking/cloning station. I also replaced the battery,At boot up I  recieve error codes 0187, 2200, 2201 all related to the missing numbers. but the OS still starts and I can use the laptop.(this i being typed  on it)Lenovo also will not allow any computer specific software and diagnotics, as it can't ID the laptop.I have now cleared the mSATA drive of all files and updated the Win 10 home to Win 10 Enterprisethe 500GB C drivestill has the recovery partions on it. I also have all the original files on the removed drives which I can easily access with the Sabrent docking station.I loaded AMI Bios editor AMIdeWin in Aministrator CMD prompt. but is not updating the numbers.getting init. interface SMbios errorAny solutions? Lenovo apparently has a APP to fix but apparently likes to frustate the hell out their knowledgable customers , so they will buy a DELL next time so they can easily access and download solutions.from a company cares about their customers..

I have recently started a new job and the company have purchased me a Thinkpad S230u. I have it hooked up to two screens and running it with the lid closed. I am also running through a thinkpad docking station. When the appliance goes to sleep it takes 10-15 seconds to awaken and present the log in screen. This happens regardless of being attached to the docking station and/or connected to a power supply. I have also checked that the Hybrid mode is switched off in the power options but still taking a very long time. Any tips on fixing this? Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I can see the drivers and some of the software support for Win7 64bit but after looking through some of the FAQ and online manuals I can not find a guide that details out in what order the drivers and other support software are to be reinstalled. Does one just install ThinkVantage and let it take over? Background:  This is a ThinkPad that was upgraded from 2 GB and maxed out to 8 GB and the user already tried to reinstall Windows and removed the diagnostic partition.  They managed to get everything working except that the touch screen would only work with the stylus and not finger touch.   So the assumption at this point is that a driver was installed in the wrong order or the wrong driver was installed. Best,A

Answer:Install 64 bit Windows 7 on ThinkPad x201 tablet

Hi all, Wow,  for a premium brand Lenovo's forums are next to useless.Does no one form Lenovo actually look around in here? I have been doing more research and it seems Lenovo has no procedure for replacing the OS except to make the us pay $50 USD more for a recovery disc.  If this is not the case please enlighten me as to where I can get this or provide a recipe for installing drivers without using the recovery disc.  If that is reallythe case then eMachines seems to provide better support than Lenovo. As it stands right now tomorrow I am going to contact my rep. at CDW-G to exchange this Lenovo x201 tablet for credit.Nowhere does it say that I have to buy additional software to use a system RAM upgrade. This is really a shame but I promise that if I have to do this I will never buy or recommend a Lenovo product to my customers again.

Hello, I am new to lenovo / windows, I used to have a Macintosh laptop and I just got the lenovo thinkpad x201 tablet laptop today through my school. I saw that it advertised both pen input and 'finger touch' input for the touchscreen, but when I try to touch the screen to select something in tablet or normal laptop mode, it does not recognize the touch no matter what I do. Also, I know there should be a "simple touch" menu brought up by double tapping 2 fingers on the screen, but that also does nothing. Does my laptop have the ability to use fingers to select things, or is it just able to use a pen? Sorry if this question is obvious, I'm new to windows / lenovo! Thanks a lot!

Answer:thinkpad x201 tablet touch input (simple tap) ??

not all of the x201 tablets support the 'finger touch' some only support pen input. Does it allow you to touch the screen at all? I do not fully understand your post.

Hi, I just discovered that many color displaying problems in software like "photoshop" or most simply "windows live viewer"  was due to the "Lenovo thinkpad LCD Monitor" profile named "TPLCD.icm"In the color management panel of the configuration panel I had to add "sRGB IEC61966-2.1" profile and define it as default to obtain normal color in those software. If anyone knows witch profile to use for my Thinkpad X201 tablet it would be nice, because I can imagine that the sRGB profile is not the most efficient one for the X201 monitor. Thank you for your help(excuse my bad english)

I have just upgraded and activated my ThinkPad X201 Tablet PC (i7 L640 @2.13 GHz, 4GB DDR3 RAM) to Windows 10 Pro (64-bit) from the original Windows 7 Pro (64-bit). The tablet appears to run fine in Windows 10 Pro. However, the Task Manager's Performance tab page shows the CPU run at the frequency between 1.17 and 1.20 GHz, even as the tablet takes several tasks and runs at 60% and above and the tablet's power mode is set to high-performance.

What went wrong? What are the things that I need to check? Please advise.

Hi. I am using a ThinkPad X201 Tablet.    When I first bought the laptop, I had a lot of trouble with the pen tablet driver. The driver didn't work well on my main drawing tool, the Paint Tool Sai. I ended up making a flawsome-yet better then Lenovo official, "Frankenstein" driver out of multiple other drivers of various manufacturers and versions.    I was very pleased when I recently re-installed the Windows on the laptop and found that Lenovo had updated the driver. However, even though the new driver fixed most of my older problems, such as calibration not working on certain applications(back then when I was tweaking hundreds of files to make the drivers work, I had to make a decision, between making calibration work in those applications and make the driver virtually unusable in all other situations, or sacrifice the calibration and make the driver work), it didn't take long for me to find that there was another problem that wasn't there before...not critical in many situations, but still, annoying.    Everything's OK when I'm using the laptop only, but when I plug the laptop onto the Ultrabase and use the DP port to use the second monitor(in extend mode), the problem happens. I'm not sure what's the reason, but it looks as of the DPI or the refresh rate has dramatically decreased.    The strange thing is that the pen still works just fine in s... Read more

I have a ThinkPad X201 Tablet running Windows 7 64-bit. Model 0831CTO. The solid state hard drive is almost always at 90% usage. It shows 136.16 GB as its size (odd size, I know, but that is what is shows. I want to upgrade to a larger HD, perhaps 500 GB SSD. I also want to up grade because I've been getting blue screen of death lately. So something is failing. i have not been able to find out a couple things that I need to know to do this: 1. Do I only need a 2.5" SDD. I recall my old ThinkPad tablet used a 1.8 hard drive which made it nearly impossible to upgrade. 2. What is the process in upgrading and changing this out so I ensure I get all my programs and all the original ThinkPad software put onto the new drive. Thank you for your help.Bill

Answer:How to replace hard drive in ThinkPad X201 Tablet running Windows 7 64-bit

Hi, btownsend

I found the Personal Systems Reference for your machine, which you can also see here (X201T section begins on page CML3-7). According to this, the standard SATA port for disk drives in the X201T takes a 2.5 inch drive, so any drive compatible with SATA 3.0 that is 2.5 inches x 9 mm should work fine.

As for moving things to the new drive, I would either use backup discs or a backup USB drive to save everything and then use that media to refresh everything once the new drive is installed.

Hope it helps,Adam

Hello. Please excuse my bad English.I had a few problems with my 3 mouth old Thinkpad Twist. After a blue screen (some kernel page errors, I can't remember witch error), my PC couldn't boot at all, I was stuck at boot menu (the one you get when you press F12 on boot). I performed some of the Lenovo test tools for hardware and memory, and had to recover about 2000 bad sectors, the operation took about 6 hours, and I also got an error at next boot (Image failed to verify with *ACCESS DENIED*), I got rid of it by disabling secure boot. I used another windows 8 ISO on a USB key to try some repair tools, it didn't work, now I get a blue screen saying that my ntfs.sys file is corrupted, but I managed to backup my data. Now I'd like to perform a Factory Recover, but I can't boot on the Recovery partition, I press F11, then the screens stays black for a while, and the PC restarts, just like when I wasn't able to boot on my windows. (I couldn't boot on the factory recover partition at the beginning too). I didn't back up my Recovery partition on a USB key, maybe I can still copy it to an USB key and boot on it? I can access the partition via the command prompt on my windows 8 USB key, but I'm not sure how to copy the partition on another key. I'm going to send my computer back to get repaired (I'm assuming I have some kind of hardware problem), but I'd like to know if there is anything left to do. Thanks.

Dear all, I've changed my X201's OS to Windows 7 Professional 64 bit to use all of my 4GB Ram.Lenovo_Reco and SYSTEM_DRV partitions are still there. After the installation, I recognized that I can not run recovery to my X201's factory settings by using F11 when booting. I've tried to install ThinkVantage Rescure and Recovery latest version for 64 bit, the boot hanged, it seemed the Rescue software could not access to recovery partitions. Please, can anyone suggest on how to get back to factory system (Windows 7 Prof, 32 bit), without requesting CDs from Lenovo as my X201 doesn't have CD drive? Thanks a lot

When I first received my ThinkPad 11e with Windows 10 I created a USB recovery drive.  Everything seemed to go OK with the procedure, although it took a long, long time.  I had to borrow that thumb drive for another project and so I did a quick format to make room for other files.  It was a 32GB drive.

Now when I've tried to go back and create another recovery drive with the same thumb disc and a quick format so that nothing is on it the recovery procedure begins and after a minute or so it stops and an error message appears saying that it could not create a recovery drive.

It does this whether there is already a thumb disc inserted in the USB port or not.  I figured if there was a problem with the thumb disc I would initiate the procedure without it first and wait for it to tell me to insert the media but it never does that.

Is there something about creating a recovery drive in Windows 10 where it can only be done one time or something?

Answer:ThinkPad 11e - Creating a Recovery Drive in Windows 10

I fixed the problem I was having with the above and I'm posting this to help anyone else who might have the same trouble and hopefully they can use this information.  I looked back through my Windows updates and there were several that had failed to install.  I tried to reinstall them, download them again, etc., but no luck.  I also did a Google search for anyone who might have had to deal with this.  I figured surely I was not the first person in the world who this has happened to.  I found one solution where the author said to uncheck the box that says "Copy system files to the recovery drive".  I did and it worked as far as creating a recovery drive but what good is that if the system files are not on it? Out of frustration, I returned my ThinkPad to the factory default settings like they were when I first took it out of the box.  I let Windows do its automatic updates, which took several hours, and then I tried once again to create a recovery drive on my 32GB thumb drive, including copying the system files.  To my surprise it worked!  I guess there was a conflict with the failed Windows updates blocking it from creating a recovery drive. Also, I had been having trouble with the ThinkPad losing the wireless network connection with my router whenever I would turn the computer completely off instead of just sleep mode.  I was about ready to send it off to a Lenovo repair center.  It seems that returning it... I am trying to create recovery discs for my ThinkPad Edge E431. I double click the Q Drive, which is labeled "Lenovo_Recovery."  I follow the prompts, and request to create a disk of Boot Meida and Disck Media.  I then receive an error message stating: Unable to find files for recovery media.  Then I am informed the process has been canceled.  I receive similar error messages when going to the Control Panel and click "Lenovo - Factory Recovery Discs." From reading other forum posts, some have noted that there are problems with the mappings of drives.  My Q Drive partition states it has 2.08 of 14.6 GBs free, so I am more confident there are recover files in there.  For example, I can find the recovery.ini file.  This file however references to an S drive, which I am not sure I have.  install=recimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.wim 1 S:\installsplit=recimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.swm 1 S:\ /ref Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup*.swm During the above described Recovery Process - my computer also prompts me asking if I want to open files from the S Drive. I have tried to download and install Lenovo Recovery and Rescue 4.52, but during the install process it states I have insufficeint memory for the install, which is puzzling since I have 169 GBs of free space on my C drive. Any advice of how to create recovery discs would be appreciated - whether they use th... Hi there. My machine is thinkpad W530. Recently I had several problems with it so, I decided to recovery the system to the factory setting. However, it didn't work when the OS restarted and entered to Rescue and Recvery screen. I did follow the lenovo official instruction but I got a eorror happened, it said "recovery failed" and the recovery process was stucked. In addition, I tried to create a recovery disk and it failed, too. The lenovo said I could have only one recovery disk but I don't rember I had created a disk before. I checked the doucments in driver Q:\factoryrecovery, I also didn't find the "service done_ini". Anyone knows pls help me and your assistance is really apprecated.

Answer:Thinkpad W530: Questions about creating recovery disk

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with OS on ThinkPad W530.

As you have done all the troubleshooting steps to perform system restore and you are not able to complete the process because of error.

This kind of issue occurs when you have done changes in the HDD partition before creating the recovery disc. Hence the system factory restore option will not work.

Since you have mentioned that the recovery media has not created for the machine, the only option is visiting the nearby authorized service center for the further assistance.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

So I upgraded to Windows 10, everything works out, but I noticed from Matlab that the OpenGL support is only on the version of 1.1. I further pocked around , and found the graphics accelerator driver is from Microsoft and has some known issues (from Matlab). Then I downloaded the Intel Driver Update Utility to update the graphics driver, but nothing can be found there. Back to Windows 7, the Intel Driver works fine for me and gave OpenGL ~2.2 support. Does anyone knows better drivers in Windows 10 than the default Microsoft one? Thanks in advance.

I bought lenovo thinkpad X230 in January 2013. I made a recovery USB on a 16 GB pendrive. I bought a windows 8 pro upgrade offer as well. But i did not install it at that time and kept it for future use.  About a week ago I installed windwos 8 on my system in dual boot mode making a partition on primary HDD.everything went ok with only problem that my windows 8 did not activate. I was ok with that. But when i tried F11 recovery function, it was not working. So i tried factory reset through recovery USB i created earlier. It opened up and said BOOTMGR missing. Later with some research I realized that i didnt make USB active (bootable) before burning it.(Though this is ridiculous considering, tools provided must have done that. Like when you make windows bootable.) With all this(and me panicking), I tried backing up my data with image i created through R & R tool. After back up, I lost my recovery partition on HDD. And I guess i accidentally deleted System_DRV partition as well.  Though my computer is running fine. I need a bootable media. it would be great if you can provide it. Also if you can restore my comp to factory setting with recovery partition, it would be great. Please help me. Thanks in advance.

You may want to adjust the settings on this to see if it helps in your case. Check out this nifty knowledgebase article.

To disable this or make changes to the settings, go to the Advanced Section of the Windows Power Settings >> Display >> Auto Dim.

I created usb recovery media for my Thinkpad Yoga which came with Windows 8.1. I had a problem recently with my Metro apps so I attempted to use the recovery media, which includes the recovery partition. The boot menu gave me the option to select the usb drive containing the recovery media but it would then fail to boot into the Window Recovery Environment. I followed the instructions in the user guide so I'm a bit confused as to why the usb failed to boot. Is this due to the UEFI secure boot function? Does this mean I have to do something that is not documented in the user guide? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,I understand that this question was probably asked a million times, but unfortunately I haven't found a viable solution for my problem. I'll try to describe it in details. I bought a pre-owned W520 laptop, that's supposed to have a Windows 7 Pro. For some reason, the previous owner removed the COA sticker, that was located under the battery. The hard disk is also wiped clean, so no recovery partition is available. I want to install and activate a geniune Windows 7. Some pirated copy of windows is installed there, I tried to extract a license key with Belarc Advisor, but it was some generic OEM key found on the internet, i.e. not genuine. The summary of my talk with the local support and service center- I can't just install any copy of Windows 7 (say download an image from Microsoft), it won't activate without a COA key that is missing- if I can get a recovery media for this exact laptop, it will maybe activate from the key in BIOS- we don't know where to get this recovery media so if someone could help me with these questions- can I legally download a recovery image for this laptop (I only found some links for windows 10 downgrade, which I'm not eligible for)- can I extract the key from BIOS and maybe install a generic Windows 7 - is there even an OEM key in BIOS (because the guys from support center told me it's only for windows 8 and 10, not for 7) and will it activate? thanks in advance. Oleg.

Answer:touch sylus on thinkpad s230u

Hi

This is an interesting question. How to make OneNote to recognize hadnwritting as text, right? I don't use OneNote, and even that I have an stylus and the TP Yoga 14, I need more time to try it out and squeeze out the functionality of the stylus.

I was reading this article about OneNote that may be interesting.

I'm been using various type of thinkpad starting with 380ED, X600, X21, T42, R50, R52, T60 and recently in my collection X61 (last year) and all of them come with different OS such As win 95, Win 98, Win 200, Win XP, Win Vista Business and Window Vista Home Basic. Why on the early model I received recovery CD together with window CD, But starting from R50,R52,T60 and X61 I did not received Any more recovery CD and window CD? Any particular reason? As I think it is very important to have recovery CD and window CD As I been told (1998) by IBM thinkpad salesman that thinkpad was so special so that they need recovery CD and also window CD example when change hard disk, need to boot using the recovery CD and inside the recovery CD it's contain the driver for that model. Thanks God until today all my thinkpad is working fine. But I'm worry if one day my thinkpad got problem especially my X61, cause I find that older IBM thinkpad is more reliable that new Levono Thinkpad(sorry to said that But it a fact base on my usage As all my think pad still working fine), thus where can I buy the recovery CD? As I not good in computer, until today all my software was install by computer shop that sell thinkpad to me since 1996 But due to economy crisis they decided to closed down their business after they sell X 61 to me thus I'm a bit worry (even though still under warranty have 647 days to go) As now no body will take care for my thinkpad. Answer:Service on IBM ThinkPad and Leno ThinkPad - Recovery Discs

IBM (and later Lenovo) stopped routinely shipping recovery media after they introduced recovery partitions on the hard drives of ThinkPads. On these systems you can burn your own media using the TV R&R utility. You should do that when you first get a new ThinkPad in case you later have a hard drive failure. If you prefer original recovery media you can buy it from Lenovo for about US$50. I've also seen this media for sale on eBay.
