WiFi connection problems after upgrade to Windows 10 - Thinkpad Edge E545

Question: WiFi connection problems after upgrade to Windows 10 - Thinkpad Edge E545

I have upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 to Windows 10 recently and since then I have been having increasing problems to connect to WiFi. It is not a problem with the WiFi itself, since I can connect with my phone and tablet without any problems and my husband has not had any problems with his laptop either. It started with just having to try to connect a couple of times (clicking disconnect and then connect again) in the beginning. Then it took restarting the computer. And now I can't connect anymore no matter how often I try or whatever I try. Initially I got an error message regarding the IP address when using the troubleshoot, but now it just can't find the problem. I have read that it could be a problem with the WiFi driver, which may need an update for Windows 10. The driver listed is Realtek RTL8188E LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have not been able to find this driver or any update for it on the Realtek website. I have not been able to find anything on the Lenovo or Windows website, or anywhere else for that matter, either. I have read posts by other users who are having similar issues, but I haven't been able to find a solution. Please let me know how I can solve this problem. Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dear KVW,

Welcome in lenovo community,
Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the E545 laptop yet,
So you may go back to the previous windows and wait till lenovo release all the drivers.
Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update,

I owne a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545. I came running Windows 7. It caught a virus and became unusable. The box came with Windows 8 Pro (but not Windows 7, for some reason). So I did a clean install. But now, the comptuer has no Wifi! It only looks for a hardwired ethernet cord. It's like Windows 8 Pro doesn't know this laptop has a wireless for internet connectivity! I have exhausted my patience and it has been a very frustrating experience. I would really appreciate some sage advice from more technically adept folks on how to solve this problem. Thank you!!!!

Answer:No Wifi since upgrading to Windows 8 on Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545

Hello and welcome,

I'd install and run ThinkVantage System Update and let it install the appropriate Lenovo drivers for your machine.  See if that fixes things.

Hello, I've recently bought the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 (about a week old) and everything is fine, except the problem is that the wireless download speed & connection is terrible slow. I've done speedtests and resulted in a 1mbps--or barely-- download speed. I updated the drivers, the network adapter, etc. and I have successfully updated the important Windows updates. It's currently Windows 7 and the current network adapter is 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter. There is no problem with the router and no internet speed upgrade is required. I tested connections and done speedtests with other computers and devices on the same connection and their speed is significantly greater than the ThinkPad's. I assure you nothing is wrong with the router or connection area and I have some confidence that it is a hardware problem with the Wireless card. Is there any solution to this problem that does not require me to install another network adapter? I looked around and used Google and tried different methods but they don't seem to work. Thank you in advance.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E545 - Weak Wireless Connection

I set up an account just to reply to you!...and also I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545, and I want everyone to know what they're doing.  Plus, I'm having the same problem.  I just downloaded the Broadcom Wireless LAN (Driver here! Remember to choose for either Windows XP, 8, 8.1, or whatever you have!) and I've seen past comments that this has worked for them.  I'm about to go try it out, so wish me luck!  I hope you haven't returned that laptop you bought!  Lenovo is usually such a good brand, from what I hear, and I personally already enjoy the exterior, as I put structure, stability, and damage-resistant against style, which the Edge E545 seems to be more for the accident prone or careful type, but still cool!  Good luck!

Hello there!having same issue with my e545 wifi card here..do not understand where the problem is and seems that many people like us are having it!in my case wifi signal work fine for few min, then signal drop drammatically for no reason!and this has happend since i got the laptop back to last summer of 2014, but never really try to fix the problem..i am not a pc geek, the only thing that make me think that the signal is dropping is when i check the wirelessconnection on the bottom right corner (win 7 ultimate) and i see that a lot of wifi connection are avaible for awhile..but then in few min all disappears leaving only few avaible, the ones with the stronger signal to be clear, andwhile this is happening internect connection drop extremely .I have tryed to update/reinstall drivers but nothing seems working..Do we really have to change card as some people are suggesting?Anyone has sorted this issue without having to change card? Also i have notice only now that Dell inspirion was using the same card, and i own that up to last year..and theproblem was the same!(low wifi signal)(clever me also for not even checking the card before the purchase )Please if anybody has sorted the problem without having to change card, give us some help!Thanx

Hi Belfazul,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Wifi signal on your ThinkPad Edge E545.

Go to Device manager ? Network adapters ? Right click on Wifi adapter and go to properties, click on Power Management tab and uncheck ?Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power?, and click OK. After closing the entire window check with restarting the system once.

If the issue still persists then boot the system in to ?Safe Mode with networking? and check it once.

I know I'm not the first person to have this problem, but since none of the solutions I've seen posted in other threads has helped me, here's another one. I've had my E545 for just under two weeks, and in the last few days it's developed an extremely irritating problem.  The laptop drops its wifi connection every half hour or so.  The troubleshooter fixes it every time, but I worry that eventually it won't be able to repair the connection, and it's annoying in any case.   The wireless adapter is the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter; the wired adapter is the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.   Every time the connection drops, the troubleshooter "detects" that the problem was an unplugged network cable, and resets the adapter.  So, for some reason it looks like the laptop keeps trying to use ethernet instead of the perfectly functional wifi.  I've disabled the ethernet adapter in Device Manager, and that seems to keep the connection up longer, but eventually it drops again, and the troubleshooter says the problem is the fact that the wired connection is disabled.  I know it's disabled.   I disabled it so it would stop interfering with the wifi.   What do I have to do to make this stop?  I've installed the recommended drivers, I've disabled the problem adapter.  I've unticked the power-save options in the device properties.  I've followed every scrap o... I got a new ThinkPad Edge E545 at Christmas and I've been having trouble with my internet connection ever since I booted it up. I'm running Windows 7 Pro on it. After entering the passwords for the secure networks at both my parents' and my own home, I still can't stay consistently connected. After I installed the 100+ updates to the computer upon first booting it up, the message saying that I had a loose or broken wire went away (which is good, since I was trying to use wifi, not ethernet). Now, I still will lose internet connection ever few minutes (I think 10-15 minutes is the longest I've had an uninterrupted connection). It will either repair itself and say that it fixed an invalid IP address, or it will tell me to restart the modem. At my parents, 3 laptops, 3 smartphones, and 1 tablet work fine off the wifi. At my house, 2 computers and a bluray player will run just fine. It is only this computer. Is there some sort of driver/download that I am missing that will resolve this problem? If not, I will need to return this computer before my 30 days are up, becuase a laptop without consistent wifi is useless to me.  **This is my 3rd attempt to post this because evertime I hit post I lose internet connection.

So I was able to login at work and keep my internet connection. After searching for Lenovo's driver downloads (which was actually difficult to find), I was able to update my wireless network drivers. So far it seems to be working. Will comment again if it doesn't work after I get home. Here is the link: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-edge-e5...

I just received my new E545 and booted it up. I've noticed the CPU is quite hot and so ran some software tests. It is showing the CPU temp around 92 degree C / 196 degrees F. The chip is an AMD A10-5750M. I take it the heat isn't normal. Should I be sending this back to warranty?

I bought a Thinkpad Edge e545 in December, and I recently started monitoring the system temperatures. I noticed that the CPU temp would range anywhere from 85-110 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than past laptops that I have had. Has anyone else noticed unusually high CPU temps on this model? and if so, is there anything that can be done to make it run cooler?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge e545 CPU temperature

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 is overheating.

If your laptop feels hot and shows any of the problems below, chances are its overheating or getting there:

Fan constantly running and making loud whirring noises
Computer struggling to perform basic tasks like opening a new browser window
Mysterious error messages popping up in random programs
Lines on your laptop screen (a sign your video card is overheating)
System freezing or the dreaded BSOD (blue screen of death)
The laptop abruptly shuts down on its own

Optimal operating temperature is 50° Celsius (122° Fahrenheit) or below during normal operation of the device. Use dust remover spray to clean out of the laptop's vents. Dust can accumulate in and block the laptop's fan vents. Start using compatible cooling pads which will help in the flow of cool air into the underside vents of the laptop. Keep your working environment or computer room as comfortably cool as possible.

Hope this helps!

Best Regards,
Mithun.

I was thinking of purchasing this model: http://shop.lenovo.com/ae/en/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/e545/ I don't need anything fancy just something reliable so this would suit me fine. I mentioned it to a friend who said he bought the E530 and has regretted it ever since due to an issue with the fan. Apparently once the fan starts it doesn't stop. There is a 90-page thread about here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E530-pulsing-whiny-fan-no-low-load/td-p/797577/pa... I had assumed this would have just been an isolated model problem. What is concerning is that not only have Lenovo not fixed the issue but I have come across similar complaints about the next model, the E540: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-Fan-does-not-stop/td-p/1439657 If the same issue is present in the next model am I wrong to assume it is also present in the E545? Can someone confirm either way plz. I am also considering a Dell Latitude which I will purchase if there is no confirmation the problem has been addressed, but I would prefer to get this model. Regards, Miranda.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 that's about 18 months old. Everything has been fine until now. I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 without a problem. However, I now realize the my CD/DVD player is not working properly. I inserted several different DVDs and CD. I can hear the player spinning as if it's trying to read the disc, but when I check File Explorer, the drive has not been recognized (and no CD or DVD starts).  After doing research, I tried most of the suggestions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060 but I was unable to try to "fix registry entries" because I couldn't find Upperfilters and LowerFilters listed. Perhaps that suggestion didn't apply since the suggestion said to remove them.  I checked the BIOS to make sure the DVD was enabled.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all. I purchased a Edge E545 that came pre loaded with Win7 Pro 64.  I created the Recovery disks for Win7 and used the Win 8 Disks to upgrade the OS.  I have created a new NTFS partition on my hard drive and would like to install Win 7 to that partition.  I have tried to load the recovery disks to install into that partition but I have not been successful; the boot disk won't even load.  I downloaded the Win7 Pro 64 ISO to try and load it into that partition but the computer does not have the COA sticker under the battery like it's supposed to.  At this point I am at a loss and need help. I have recovery disks that won't load at restart or cold boot and I have a perfectly good ISO that i don't have a COA to. Thanks in advance. Ed

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E545 Dual Boot

Hi Ed,

Even if you get the recovery disks to boot, I don't think they'll give you the option to install into a particular partition.  They'll want the whole disk..I'm not 100% on that, maybe 98%...

I guess machines that came with a Win 7 downgrade installed don't have a CoA sticker.  Recovery media won't need that, but won't do what you want.

You can try using Microsoft's (really strange) method for activating a Win 7 downgrade install: Understanding downgrade rights

Basically (as I understand it) you use an already-in-use Win 7 key to install, let the activation fail, and then call MS.

Is it possible to record video using the laptop's camera WITHOUT seeing it on the screen?  I've tried going into Devices >projection, and selecting 2nd Screen Only.  The screeen goes black (which is what I want) and the camera is still recording.  But then, I get a message saying that no other screen was detected and i can see my camera on the screen again.   So, is there any way to record video without having the video on the screen?   Please help!!

OK so when I got this computer shipped to me from school back in November of 2014 it had Win. 7 on it. I had the Windows 8 recovery disc and decided to use that to upgrade the OS. Since that day my mic has been on steriods. I also keep getting the stupid message about the Dolby digital audio drivers not working. I've done everything I could find to to on the interwebs. I had installed the update first and still got it.  Then I uninstalled, reinstalled, and restarted the laptop... still got the message.  Now I can't even use Skype.  PLEASE someone with updated information help! I need this thing to work for school since I have tutoring groups via Skype and such.  Many thanks.

Hi there, I thought I'd see if I could get help here before opening a repair ticket. I'm experiencing general sluggishness as well as daily freezups and browser crashes with this brand new laptop purchased in November of 2014. Whenever I run either Chrome or Internet Explorer, the names and x's (to close tabs) in the browser tabs suddenly disappear on a daily basis at random times. I have to either reboot or use Task Manager to close the browser and start again when this happens. I also get random freezes, where the entire computer (including the mouse cursor) stops responding, then it starts responding again after 20-30 seconds. Chrome in particular has a curious issue when launched: instead of the normal Chrome window appearing, a very generic, basic, and blank window appears at first, which after three seconds is filled in with the normal Chrome features. On no other computer I own or use does Chrome behave this way, it usually just launches normally from the start. I bought this laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled rather than 8. The only programs I installed are Avast, AOL 9.7, CCleaner, and MalwareBytes (the free version that does not actively run), and I only removed whatever antivirus came preinstalled (was it McAfee?). I also updated Java, Adobe Reader, and Flash. The problems persisted even after I completely uninstalled Avast. I've run virus scans with both Avast and MalwareBytes and found 0 infections. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, even after clean... Read more

Hey! So I bought my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 about a year and a half ago, and right out of the box this brand new computer was EXTREMELY slow. Internet pages load extremely slow, games play choppy and slow, I cannot watch streams with my computer, and I cannot view HD videos on any platform. This should not be happening with a brand new computer with 16 gigs of ram. I should've submitted it for repair or returned it earlier but I guess I always thought I would find the problem and download a driver or something and the problem would be fixed, but alas, it is still functioning like a laptop from 2001. Any advice or help is much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 extremely slow

Hi Monger,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Maybe you would want to remove any unnecessary think vantage software?s or other software?s that you don't need.

Additionally try updating the OS and drivers, you can let Windows update do this.

Try disabling all start-up programs, to see if's it's a faulty program. The easiest way is to use the msconfig program. I would also try seeing what program is eating up the resources, ctrl+shift+esc.

I hope the above information helps.

while i am comfy with my laptop, my trusty computer has suffered a crash as of the late resulting in it's refusal to turn on sometimes and inability to start windows eventually i tracked my problem (through Bios Test and scans) to my RAM modules, after some time i figured it out both of my ram modules work fine (i tested them on my other laptops) but it seems the lower memory slot has failed, i managed to fix this simply by moving the 4gb ram module up to the secondary slot and it works again. but my computer is still under warrentey (and before you say anything there were no warnings about the removel of the modules in any documation or in the computer that would void the warrenty) and i was wondering how "failure of RAM slot" to go about fixing the slot as it is oviously a defective part. but it's also attached to the motherboard so... yeah. My new E545 has inconsistent connection speeds to my new router. The first day I got it seemed fast and fine on loading. The next day it slowed and loaded very slowly most of the day with brief periods of average. I looked for a new driver and according to Windows(7) and Lenonvo I have the latest one. I then bought a new router (ASUS N600) hoping that would correct things. It seemed to for a few days and it was pretty fast (60-90mps) but today its dropping a times to 19mps and then back up. My other laptop isnt having any issues connectiong and loading pages fast. Could it be a deffective card? I have tried adjusting card settings to no avail.

Had it about 5 days, and just tried to boot F8 Safe Mode.

It refuses to acknowledge the F8 key and boot into the Safe Mode menu screen.

According to Microsoft website, F8 is supposed to work in Win7.

Is this a known bug in my hardware?  In Win7?

Or, I hope not, is my Windows installation corrupted?

Answer:F8 Safe Mode does not work, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545

Are you tapping the f8 key repeatedly or just one time . . .

If msconfig is working you could just use it to force safe mode on the next reboot.

Hi, Twi days ago I bought a ThinkPad Edge S430, the wireless wifi connection is so slow and ramdonly lost conection. I have made a speed test with my previous machine a the new one in the same wifi networw and the connection is so slow in my new one. I have put also in the power management setting optimal performance like I read could be a issue about this but the problem is still happening. The machine has windows 8.  Any advice, do you know which one could be the issue? Best Regards.

Answer:Slow wifi connection ThinkPad Edge S430

Hi, juancevi

Is there an Intel wireless card in your S430? If so, then I would recommend checking out  Control Panel ? Programs and Features. Here you can uninstall certain programs from your computer. One that you may find is called the Intel Management Engine. If available, I would recommend uninstalling it. This program has caused issues for me in the past and removing it has helped my WLAN be more stable, so it may help you as well.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes,
Adam

Hello,I've been selling and preparing more then 10 identicals laptops in the past months for my customers. Each one of them shows slow and poor performance with their HDDs. After doing all updates and disableing all sofwares from Windows boot allows the laptop to ''breathe'' a little more. But as soon as a software uses the HDD a bit...laptop is giving poor performances. An Acer with a 5400rpm drive and a Pentium B950 still boots 2 times faster. I think the problem comes from HGST HDD drive brand. I've ghosted the original Hard Drive on seagate and western digital 5400rpm Drives and already is behaving much more better. Even better on 7200rpm drives.I'm suggesting all users to invest 90$ into a 120GB SSD drive to unleash this laptop series performances. Even an AMD A6 series can give very good performances. Its just , in my opinion Lenovo's bad choice of part that slow's down a well built and reliable laptop. THey should have invested more into one of the most important part in a computer instead of offering tons of useless Lenovo softwares that most users don't even know what to do with it.

I have a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545 with download speeds in the 0.15 mbs range. Ethernet gives it about 30 mbps. No, it is not my router--other lenovo laptop wifi connections are perfectly normal for my broadband at 25 mbps. It is windows 8.1 fully updated. I tried to find drivers and downloaded the supposedly correct wireless LAN driver, but no success. Sometimes when started plugged in to battery power or just after being plugged in to ethernet it has high wifi download speed. Also the webcam is not showing picture, which driver should I download? And I am getting an audio driver fail notice. This is a brand new laptop, and Lenovo is quickly losing a loyalty. The only way they would help me on their renowned customer service site is if I paid $99.99. Any info is appreciated.

I am having the exact same problem with the wireless internet. A system reboot seems to fix the problem temporarily, but over time the performance degrades. I am using a 64-bit Windows 7 OS. Let me know if you find anything out!

I recently purchased a pre-configured ThinkPad Edge E420 Core i3 -- equipped with Lenovo's most-basic WiFi card. Now, I need to add dual 2.4 / 5.0 GHz capability to this E420. Will the retail version of Intel Centrino-N 6250 (part # 622ANXHMW) be recognized by the ThinkPad BIOS & supported natively thru Lenovo driver updates, same as the Lenovo version of this part -- FRU 60Y3195? (My reason for asking? The Lenovo "FRU" part is ~ 6x more expensive than the widely-available Centrino-N 6250 retail version -- Gasp!) Also, I don't intend to use the 6250 WiMAX (802.16e) feature, so I don't want the card wasting my bandwidth & my patience, by discovering & reporting on available WiMAX access points... Will that feature stay dormant & out of the way, unless or until I elect to use it in the future? I hope that I'm being needlessly cautious, but I was spooked by seeing numerous references stating that the similar Intel Centrino-N 6200/6205 are NOT compatible with Lenovo ThinkPads... My sincere TIA to all who choose to respond!

Hi deltaman and welcome to the forums,

Lenovo has a whitelist in the bios that will produce an error that you can't boot past if you put a non-Lenovo branded card in there.  The reason for the whitelist is that the card is matched to the antenna in order to be compliant with FCC regulations regarding interference.  The only way around the whitelist is to modify the bios to accept the non-Lenovo card, but on a machine as new as yours, there hasn't been one made yet. So, you would be stuck with buying the Lenovo-branded card.

As far as disabling the WiMAX feature, I'm sure there's a way to do it, I've just never had of those cards so I'm just not sure how.  Maybe someone who does will chime in here.

Thank you.

Dear KVW,

Welcome in lenovo community,
Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the E545 laptop yet,
So you may go back to the previous windows and wait till lenovo release all the drivers.
Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update,

Hello there,I performed clean Windows 7 installation on my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 laptop, I installed all the drivers and Windows updates, however I still have one unknown device in Windows Device Manager that I can't get to work properly. I do not know what the device is and Windows troubleshoot doesn't help at all. I did some googling and checked your Lenovo support and found out that this might be missing Power Management driver but I have installed it and the issue persits. When I go to device's Details tab it lists two Hardware Ids: 1) ACPI\SMB0001, 2)*SMB0001 (screenshot provided).Unknown deviceI have also tried to install AMD SMBUS driver and many others (Synaptics driver) and in the end I got rid of all unkown devices from the Device Manager except this last one. Could you please advise on which driver I might have missed or what steps need to be taken to solve this issue? Thank you very much in advance,Michal

Greetings,I have recently purchased a ThinkPad Edge e545, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have followed all the instructions, upgrading drivers and such. The system seems to work great except for one thing. In Device Manager, I see there is one Unknown Device, which does not appear to match any available driver downloads on the Lenovo support section (I have tried them all). The information for this device is as follows: Device Instance: ACPI\SMB0001\3&2411E6FE&0Hardware ID: ACPI\VEN_SMB&DEV_0001 Goggle searching turns up a mixed-bag of conflicting information, and links to less than reputable driver files which my spider-sense tells me would be best to not install. Help would be appreciated. The device reappears if it is uninstalled.. And I have also tried the SMBus Windows 7 driver, which has no apparent effect. Thanks,~{Ultima}~

When I look for the signal in access connections I see other access points in the neighborhood but not the one thats here. The router has 2 SSIDs, one for 2.4ghz and one for 5ghz. The other day I could see the 2.4ghz SSID on the signal map but still couldn't connect to it.

Hello, I have been asked to reimage a batch of 6 ThinkPad 15s, they are all the same model (0319-2AG) and were purchased together a while ago. I have built a custom image of Windows 8.1 and rolled this out to the machines, the deployment went great and they are all running Windows 8.1 now however 2 out of the 6 cannot connect to WiFi as Windows 8.1 reports that the adapter is "off". I have checked the obvious, there is no hardware switch on this particular laptop and I have tried resetting to BIOS in case something was disabled in there. I think the problem has something to do with the WiFi hotkey on the keyboard (F9 Key) as nothing happens when i push this. I have tried multiple solutions for this problem found both on this forum as well as elsewhere and nothing has worked so far, I hope someone can suggest something new as I'm now out of ideas. Please see list below of things I have tried already: Reimaged with clean Windows 8.1Installed power management driver from LenovoInstalled hotkey utility from LenovoInstalled energy management software from Lenovo (V7 on reccomendation from another post)Installed settings dependancy package from LenovoInstalled driver for WiFi card from Lenovo I have now basically installed every driver available from Lenovo for this model and I am still back at square one.  Hi, barbnice  There is a shortcut where Fn keys are usually placed. If you press the wireless control button (which is F9 on my E420), a wireless control UI appears. It looks like this:   From there, you can press either button to turn the wireless feature on or off.You can also click on 'Individual control' to turn on/off Wireless and Bluetooth separately.  If previous method did not resolve the problem: Right click on the Windows wireless control button on your taskbar. Then, click on Troubleshoot problems.  A window like this will appear:  Click on "Check to see if this problem is fixed" and wait a while until it turns on the wireless capability.  I hope this resolves your problem. hwso1129

One way to approach this is to download and install ThinkVantage System Update: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-73695
Run it and see which packages it recommends. If it recommends any BIOS update, I'd suggest deselecting.

Hello,

I just got a new Lenovo E545 laptop in the mail today with Windows 7 Professional.

I get randomly disconnected from my Wifi.  This happens anywhere from 5 minutes apart to 30 minutes apart.  I can't seem to find any common reason.

I have Verizon Fios Quantum and am almost positive it is not an issue with the router.  All of my other devices including another laptop have no connectivity issues.

I have looked around online but can't seem to fix the issue.  I just checked and my drivers are up to date.  Once I troubleshoot the connection it has said several different things, from something related to my ip address to something to do with the wireless card.  It always is connected again within 30 seconds.

Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks for any help.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E330 WiFi disable

Hello elFilipko, exactly the same thing happened to me today and this is how I managed to fix it: 1. I have downloaded four Windows drivers as described here (the first one of the links isn't active anymore so I downloaded this driver in its current version from support.lenovo.com - Lenovo Power Management Driver for Windows 8). 2. I installed all these drivers on my Windows 8 (I have dual boot - Win 8 and Ubuntu). 3. After restarting the computer and rebooting again to Windows, I pressed F9 to enter Wi-Fi-related settings (you may be required to press Fn+F9, depending on your settings). After pressing this key, a small window with Wi-Fi-related settings should appear in the middle of the screen (as far as I know, this special window appears only with the Windows 7 version of these drivers, so it was necessary to uninstall and replace the Windows 8 versions of drivers in my case). In this small window, I disabled airplane mode and turned Wi-Fi on. 4. After step 3, it seemed that nothing has changed, but just after rebooting to Ubuntu, the Wi-Fi was on and working. I think a similar solution could work in your case too, just install Win 7 or Win 8 and try it. Best regards.

I have a Thinkpad Edge E545 that I just got yesterday. The wifi connected straight out of the box, but then after a few minutes it disconnects. After that it will not find the wireless network at all. The only fix is to reboot, and then the same thing happens again. I called technical support. They started me out with the hardware tech support. Pretty quickly the lady determined that it was a software issue, so she transfered me to the software department. They told me they could fix it, but I had to pay either a onetime fee of $69 or get a subscription to their service at $19 a month. So, for a system I just bought, straight out of the box they won't help me. That sounds like bad technical support to me. Anyway, any one else have this problem? Or any ideas? I'm pretty close to returning it. Thanks,Jon

Just tried windows 8 on my Thinkpad Edge 15 (0301-GQG) and it recognised there was a wifi adapter in there but it wasnt turned on.  After several hours looking for drivers I reverted to Windows 7 but its a fresh install from a windows CD rather than a lenovo restore CD (because I havent got one) Now my wifi adapter wont work and when I press the Fn + F9 button I get a little dialog box saying 'to use the wifi adapter, the switch must be turned on'.  There is no physical switch on this laptop. After reading through the forum, I installed system update 4 as suggested and chose ALL the available updates.  Now pressing the Fn + F9 key doesnt even bring up the dialog box as before and still no wifi. DEvice manager reports an Intel Wifi Link 1000 BGN adapter with no problems.  Is that the correct driver for this model?

Hi guys,I have a laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 model running on Window 10 Pro OS. It is a Core i3-3110M CPU @2.40GHz 8GB RAM 64-bit OS. My issue is :WLAN / WiFi keeps going ON and OFF every now and then. The WiFi once connected keeps connecting and disconnecting every minute and it sometimes take forever to reconnect back. I will need to right-click on the WiFi Symbol at the bottom right and click on 'Troubleshoot problems' to recover from this issue. Once recovered, it disconnects again. Some Observations :The issue could be because of the conflict between the Bluetooth drivers and the WiFi drivers. If Bluetooth is disabled then the WiFi works correctly. There will be no problems regarding the WiFi getting disconnected. These are the following details of the hardwares and their respective driver versions. Network : Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless -N 2230Driver Version : 15.18.0.1Driver Date : 30-04-2015  Bluetooth : Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)Driver Version : 18.1.1525.1445Driver Date : 18-06-2015 I have no idea why these two are causing this issue, but I really need to fix this. And it has been atleast a year since I bought this laptop and it has been showing this problem since 4 - 5 months back. Please let me know if there is a work around for this. If not atleast I hope the above information might help fixing the issue. If there is any additional information that is needed from me, please leave a m... Read more

Hello, A little more than 6 months ago I purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 laptop on Amazon that came with Windows 7 pre-installed, and upgrade discs for Windows 8. I went ahead and upgraded the computer, but I quickly found that I disliked Windows 8/8.1. I would like to restore it back to factory settings with Windows 7, does anyone know how I can do this? Thank you, Wesley

Answer:Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 on Edge E545

Hi Wesley,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Operating system downgrade on your ThinkPad Edge E545.

Have you created the recovery disc of Windows 7?
If yes, you can boot the system with recovery media and follow the onscreen instruction to complete the installation.
If no, then you have to purchase the recovery media from nearby service center.
Note: make sure you have backed-up your personal data before proceeding with OS installation.

Hope this helps.

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing £25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

Last month I bought a Lenovo e545. I did an upgrade to windows 8.1 on my new system. After upgrading, I noticed several problems with my drivers and installation of them(Conextant audio driver, Windows location driver). Also none of the Windows 8 games work. So I tought I'd do a sfc /scannow first. There I got the message the system is locked. So I thought to reinstall my backup on the recovery partition. This also said the disk is locked. I tried reInstalling from a home made external USB hard disk with original recovery system, this also won't work.  This makes all my recovery disks usseless so I can not restore my computer if anything goes wrong...Now the base of the problem might be influenced by one of these factors:In trying to solve the problem I accidently downgraded the BIOS from 1.10 to 1.09 (so maybe this infuences the Windows certificates in the BIOS, maybe a technician can tell me if this can happen) and can not find the 1.10 BIOS on the website to be downloaded and upgrade the BIOS again.I added 4 GB crucial RAM (1600)The Windows 8.1 upgrade is a pain in the ass and blocks the possibility somehow to recover the systemI really need to be able to recover the system to preform a clean system install... Who can help?

Hi, Mohammed-khan

Could you please post your machine type and model? You should be able to find this information on the underside of the machine in the format XXXX-XXX. With this, I'll be able to look up all the parts of your system and see if the memory you purchased is compatible with everything in your computer.

Thanks in advance,

Hello, I am planning to upgrade my laptop memory to 16 GB. Currently having 8gb.  Can anyone give me correct info about the upgrading the ram. Like, type of ram which compatable with my laptop and the process to go ahead. thanksAvi

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 530 RAM upgrade

Hi Avi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The maximum memory supported by the E530 is 16GB (2x8GB). The memory module which works fine would be a PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3. The factory installed memory is probably the best you can buy.

Refer the hardware maintenance manual to understand how to add the memory.

Best regards,
Mithun.

Read more

So, I need a dual band + BT wifi card that will work in an Edge E130. Yes, i've already been directed to the stupid "FRU" and "Supported wireless" lists. The FRU list isn't helpful and the "Supported wireless" list is a complete lie. (A supposedly supported card is "unsupported" and halts at POST) So what's the exact model card I need to get and where can I get it from? (Or who do I contact to get the Intel Advanced N 6230 added to the BIOS whitelist) Failing this, i'll be returning it/demanding a refund (if neither are forthcoming, i'll be issuing a charge back on my CC). Under the NZ Consumers Guarantee's act , if Lenovo are listing a card as compatible and it's not, then I have various legal avenue's to persue or i'll just issue a charge back and go buy a laptop from another manufacturer that aren't assholes about what I can do with my own **bleep** hardware.

Answer:Require dual band + BT wifi card for Thinkpad Edge E130

The FRU list is necessary.  If a card isn't sold by or for Lenovo it will fail the BIOS whitelist test.

As an example, a generic Intel 5300 will fail.  An Intel 5300 FRU # 43Y6459 will pass - at least in a machine that has that FRU whitelisted.

It isn't in the PCI ID that I can see. My Lenovo-branded 5300 has the generic Intel ID. It may be in the subsystem ID or in some pixie dust that Lenovo sprinkles in the firmware - I don't know the details - but a Lenovo-compatible 5300 is not the same as a generic one.  Searching for a whitelist vs PCI ID won't get you any farther than the FRU list would.  If a card would pass the whitelist, it is already branded with the FRU.

If you're shopping the aftermarket, rather than Lenovo sales, you need to shop by FRU along with card type.  Legit sellers will list the FRU # along with laptop compatibiliy.

You  (and I) might wish it were otherwise, but that's the reality.

Hi, I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254 T1Q laptop, I need suitable Wireless (Wifi) driver. My OS is Windows 7 64 bitUltimate. I tried with many drivers, but no use. Please help me. Thanks in advance. -Thiyagarajan

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254 T1Q - Need suitable wifi driver

Hey there thiyagarajaner,

I believe you are using the ThinkPad 11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi card. Have you tried using the System Update Tool? This typically will instal the drivers that match your system. Hope this helps.

As an alternative there is also this driver, that may work in the even that the one from Broadcom does not.

Hi.  I'm new to the forum and hoping to find a fix. The Intel AC3160 wifi card has been a problem from the start, so much so that Lenovo sent a replacement, which I installed.  It works, but only for a while -- a day, maybe 2 or three.  Then it connects to my network, but without internet access.  The only way I can get internet access is to uninstall the card and the driver, restart the computer, and reinstall the driver, which I downloaded from the Intel site.  It'll work fine for a while, then the exact same problem returns. I went so far as to purchase an Intel 7265 wifi card on Amazon (the only other card supported by the BIOS), but it appears to have the same driver as the 3160.  I am wondering if the new card will solve this problem, or whether there is another solution available. Thanks, and have a good day! HB

Upgrade WAN to 'AC' on ThinkPad Edge 520 from 'N' . Which wireless cards would be correct to use in this model?

Answer:Can we upgrade WAN card to AC on ThinkPad Edge 520

Good day and welcome to the community.

Please have a look at your hardware manual: http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/e520_e525_hmm_en_0a60536_05.pdf
Starting on manual page 103, you'll see the parts listing. Item #17 is the WLAN card and manual pages 113-114 show which FRUs will work without the 1802 BIOS boot-time error. If you look for one of these cards, be sure that it is a genuine FRU part. Generic equivalents will throw the error. There are no AC cards listed.

Hope this helps to clarify.
Regards.

My laptop finally arrived. So I upgraded some of the recommended upgrades by the Lenovo System Update Utility on 03/21 (Access Communications, Power Manager, Intel Turbo Booster, Ultra Nav, Win 7 SP1). After this update my Thinkpad which used to boot in about 30 seconds started to take like 3 minutes to boot. So I called tech support they told me to do a system restore in safe mode, so very reluctantly I did that. Now every time I reboot I get an error which says "Gfxui is missing" nothing else happens but it bothers me and I would like to get rid of it. My Thinkvantage toolbox crashes and doesn't work anymore. I get an error which says Lenovo Thinkvantage tool box could not be opened. I tried the workaround mentioned here in one of the forums - I tried uninstall/reinstall; did not work. I tried deleting the MobileBroadband.xml file; did not work. As of now, my boot time is not too great (compared to my 30 second Boot time) but better than 3 minutes. I've already tried disabling all but the most essential startup items through MSconfig, cleaned my Registry, basically everything I could think of. My wireless connection acts extremely flakey as well, it disconnects and reconnects every minute or two every since access connections was installed (after the said upgrade, there was no access connections befoe the upgrade). This has made using the wireless connection at home almost unusable. (Weirder still is that my school wi fi works fine on this) I know its no... Read more

Answer:Upgrade crippled my Thinkpad Edge 14

I hate to recommend something this drastic, but at this point, I would probably do a complete system restore, F11 at startup and put it back to factory specs. Being that you installed and updated everything at once, it's going to be tough to find out which one thing is messing things up. When you do updates or install new programs or applications, I find that it's best to do one at a time and then reboot.  Then see if it works okay before you do the next one.  And so on and so on.  Doing them all at once usually doesn't work so well. When you get it back to specs. burn yourself a set of restore discs.  You probably should have done that first before you did anything else.

Hi, i was just wondering if the Thinkpad Edge E531's Intel HD graphics 4000 is manually upgradable? or can be changed manually? and also the memory, is it upgradable? thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E531 Upgrade

Hi jinny and welcome to the community,

The graphics chip is part of the processor chip.  While the processor does look like it can be upgraded, you would probably still have to stay with the same line of processor chips (third generation Intel). The graphics would still be the same Intel 4000.

The ram can be upgraded, see page 66 of your Hardware Maintenance Manual. That will show where the chips are.

My Thinkpad is getting old, but I already tweaked it with 8 GB RAM and SSD and there is really nothing wrong about it (it frustrates me that most of the new notebooks have no UMTS module) other than the CPU speed of the Intel i3-380UM CPU... I need at least 50% more CPU power. Here is a list of similar CPUs: http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i3_Mobile/i3-380UM.html I think that the UM models (which also consume 18W) may work.... does anyone here have any experience about this?

Hello all,

I have bought a Edge E531 (N4I2HGE 68852H) and I want to upgrade to a SSD, in best case in addition to a HDD:

Besides the option of chaning the HDD to a SSD by using the S-ATA interface, I would like to know which other options exist.

During upgrading the RAM I found an additional interface not knowing what it is (maybe M.2?).

Images of M.2 SSDs look to0 long for my notebook!?

Does anybody knows which interfaces in addition to the S-ATA exist and can be used for a SSD.

Hello all! I have a question for the more advanced users or, why not, for someone from Lenovo. I am the proud and fresh owner of a Thinkpad Edge 14" model NVS3GRI (machine type 0199-3GG). For full specs, see [1]. Currently, it has 2GB of DDR3 RAM, rated 1066 MHz. I am planning a memory upgrade which, hopefully, will give my rig new wings. Here's what I have in mind: http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KHX1333C7S3K2_4G.pdf  The question is: will my Lenovo Edge successfully use this memory? That is, could the 1333MHz frequency of the memory(increased, compared to the standard 1066MHz) damage the notebook? Answer:Thinkpad Edge E425 SSD Upgrade

Hi,

I don't have personal experience with your machine.  Here are two documents that should help:

Hardware Maintenance Manual

ThinkPad SL and Edge Notebooks; 2009 to 2013 (withdrawn models)

According to the HMM:  The computer comes with either a PCI Express Mini Card for wireless WAN or an mSATA solid-state drive. If the computer is equipped with an mSATA solid-state drive, it is installed in the wireless WAN card slot.

The lslwbook says:  SATA Disk: Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high, removable, upgradable, Shock Mounted Hard Drive,

I'm not sure what you mean by "SSD connectors differ from the normal notebook HD connectors".  I'd expect a SATA SSD (not mSATA) to have the same dimensions (either 7 or 9.5mm thick) and connectors as your current HDD.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E330 ram upgrade

You can install up to 8GB or 16GB RAM depending on how much slots you have, unless Lenovo put a restriction in the BIOS. Some sources say you have 2 slots, this means 2 SODIMMs of 8GB RAM = 16GB.Don't buy Value RAM, they have a greater chance of not working. Get a slightly more expensive module. But avoid value RAM at all cost.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

I was troubleshooting an issue on my son's Thinkpad Edge E545 keyboard (left shift and several keys on left side not working properly), so I removed the keyboard, folliowing the instructions on the Lenovo site. However, after removing and reattaching both ribbons, putting the keyboard back on, putting both keyboard screws back in securely and reattaching the back panel, the right side of the keyboard doesn't work, ie, it won't produce a character. Everything to the left of Y-H-N works but nothing to the right. Also, the original problem is still there so I may need to get a replacement keyboard anyway. However, because the right side of the keyboard won't work, I can't even log in and the computer basically doesn't function.  Any ideas as to where I went wrong removing and reattaching the keyboard ribbons? I had clean hands when touching them and, based on the video I watched, that shouldn't cause them to malfunction.

hey gaviero, welcome to the forums, although you could use a 1333 memory module, it is recommended to use a 1066.the edge 14 can support up to 4gb of ram and changing ram will not void warranty.

i upgraded my processor from a AMD athlon II p360 to a AMD phenom II p650. Was this the right thing to do or is it going to fry my motherboard they both use 25w? is my motherboard compatible with the p650? is it compatible with my BIOS? i did some research at cpu-word.com and compared specs on both cpu's. they  are similar other then the fact that the p650 has better numbers. here ar the stats http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20Dual-Core%20Mobile%20P650%20-%20HMP650SGR23GM.ht... and http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Athlon%20II%20Dual-Core%20Mobile%20P360%20-%20AMP360SGR22GM.ht...  Please give me ur personal opinion if it ws the right thing to do :s thanks

My wife has a TP Edge E420, Type 1141-CTO, which I have upgraded since the warrenty ran out. It now is successfully running Windows 10, 64Bit on a 500GB Samsung 840EVO SSD. I would like to replace the WiFi card with a dual-band version which can access the 5GHz.band on our ASUS home router. I've found an Intel Ultimate-n 6300 AGN Pci-e, Model No. 633ANHMW, IBM FRU 60Y3233 for only $12.99. There is also an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205, FRU 60Y3253 listed on Amazon for even less. Is there any chance either of these cards will work in her TP? For those prices I suppose I could just give it a try if no one here knows. Thanks,George

Hi,

Short answer: I don't think so

As you probably know, WLAN cards are whitelisted in BIOS.  A card must be a listed model AND have a Lenovo FRU number.

The whitelisted cards are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

Looks like a couple of them are dual-band.  A search by FRU number may locate a source.

[edit] A quick look at the BIOS readme didn't indicate that any cards have been added to the list.

Good luck,
Z.
