Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

Question: Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

Hi, The screen on my my Edge 420 has gone really dark to the point where I need to shine a light onto it to be able to see anything (only just). I hadn`t changed anything before this occured. The computer works fine connected to my TV using that as the monitor. I`ve done some searching on this forum and tried the following to no avail:- Restart with power unplugged- Restart with power plugged in but no battery.- Held down the power button for several 1 minute intervals with the power adapter + battery out.- Using TV as the monitor: Adjusted brightness settings to maximum in Control Panel (Power Options)- Within Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel: Unticked Image Enhancement (Auto Adjust) plus unticked Film Mode Detection plus unticked Display Power Saving Technology.- Checked my Intel Graphics driver was up-to-date. I`m not great with computers but now suspect a faulty screen inverter or a motherboard problem. Pretty annoyed that this has happed to an 18 month old machine which rarely leaves my desk at home. My previous Thinkpad lasted 6 years which is why I bought this one. Could anyone suggest any other things I could try or direct me to a cost effective way to have it professionally repared? Thankyou,Roger

Poor support.  Waiting for your answer. Daniel Bassin.

Answer:Brightness problem in ThinkPad Edge E420 & E520 Series.

I understand your frustration, have you checked to see if your BIOS is up-to-date?

There is a BIOS update that came out in Nov 2012, it includes a fix for the issue of brightness keys (F7 & F8).

Please let me know how this goes and if you have any questions.

Hey all, My wife's laptop, e420, has been having issues for the last 3-4 months. It started where she would shut the laptop and it would not go to sleep, the screen would just be black. You would have to hit the power button to wake up. A new issue is that we get the dreaded blue screen. The error shows that there is a problem power management when shutting the laptop. I have tried to debug the dump file with little help and I have updated all the drivers. I have a feeling the power management drivers became corrupt on an update but not sure. Any thoughts? I have updated the bios as well. Thanks!

I'd start by repairing or reinstalling the OS and go from there. Then you'll know wether is hardware or software related.

Hi! my ThinkPad shows a strange behavior... Suddenly the screen brightness was reduced by the system. Brightness is "15" but it is darker than before. I can not find any option to raise brightness!!!! I am using a Lenovo power supply unit. It is annoying to use the ThinkPad at daylight. Really exhausting looking at a screen thats too dark. Any tips? Regards, nightwatch83

Answer:Screen Brightness (ThinkPad Edge 15)

nightwatch83,

Some basic questions...

If you reboot to windows and are on AC is the screen still dim?   Does it respond at all to screen brightness increase / decrease settings?

If you restart and go into BIOS on AC, how bright is the display?  Any different than in Windows?

If the problem seems isolated in Windows, I would reload the power manager and hotkey drivers and recheck the settings in power manager for screen brightness.

Best regards,

Mark

Question: thinkpad edge e420

I was just wondering what everyones take is on the edge e420?I was looking at one and i was just wondering if anyone has encountered any major problems with them and if they are pretty good for the price. I noticed that the e420 has a large touch pad and the one im looking at has the core i3 23XX series with hd 3000 is what the specs claim. Also Im using a thinkpad t41 right now and how much different is everything, mean im running windows 7 ultimate on the t41 but without aero cause of the 32mb ati chipset. does the e420 have a good keyboard and is it better than say an hp or asus laptops on longevity and quality. Also is there any major flexing of the laptop? some insight would be nice

Answer:thinkpad edge e420

I have the I5 2410m version with win home prem (1141-a24) and I have been very happy with it so far. Previous ThinkPads z60t, t43.I picked up my E420 the first part of January. So far seems like a pretty solid computer. The experience has been very smooth (I have been meticulous about checking that I have the latest updates). Really impressed with it so far.My t43 (2gb Pentium M, 2GB DDR2, ATI graphics, and 1400 x 1040 screen) was running win 7 Ult. The user experience has been very nice (don't know how else to explain it.) Fast boot (30sec), quickly loads most programs... overall, every aspect has been very consistent and predictable.Flex is not an issue. I have not opened it up to see how its put together, but its pretty ridged. I should also mention that it is super light compared to any notebook I have ever owned. So, now the bad...or rather, observed items that I would probably change: I miss my ultra bay (the drive that is installed is pretty nice, I just don't like the outer cover. I worry about grabbing it oddly and breaking it..not a big deal though), I miss my ThinkLight, and the front 'edge' of the Edge can feel kind of sharp to your wrists if you type in certain angles. The chicklet keyboard is up to lenovo standards in my opinion (however, I do miss my t43 keyboard).Notables: The LED screen is wonderful, and I have very glad that its offered in anti glare. The front facing speakers sound very nice.Bottom line. Nice computer, and IT IS very much a ThinkPad, but it n... Read more

Hi, My "fn" key seems to sporadically stop working properly.  Most of the time, pressing it along with F1, F2, or any of those buttons does not seem to produce any result.  It randomly starts working at times, but only for a minute.   Strangely, the only way I can get it to actually work is by holding it down for ~30 seconds causing a dialogue box entitled "Thinkpad Keyboards Properties" to open.  While the dialogue is open, the fn key works properly- but again, only temporarily.   Things I have tried: 1)  Restarting my computer. 2)  Switching the "fn" and "ctrl" keys in the BIOS. 3)  Enabling and disabling legacy mode (changing whether or not you need to press fn to access the F1/ F2 etc. keys) 4)  Updating all drivers. 5)  Performing a system restore to a time before I recall having the problem. 6)  Performing an authentic rain dance and cursing the heavens. The OS I'm using is Windows 7.  No other solutions I've found online have worked.  As far as I know, there has been no physical damage or liquid damage to my computer.  I haven't downloaded any strange programs recently that could be linked to this.  Nothing else has malfunctioned besides this button.  It's frustrating because I use both the F keys and the 'control volume' keys regularly, so I can't just remain in default or legacy mode as I would need to switch back and forth ... 1. Where is Enhanced Experience 2.0? Or are the tweaking already done? 2. If it is already done, then my startup is very slow. I am comparing to a System of my old Toshiba, which start up faster then this Lenovo Enhanced Experienced 2.0 Thinkpad Edge E420. My old laptop is a Pentium M 1.8Ghz Single Core, 1GB DDR 1 Ram, and a UATA 33 5200Rpm HDD. I dont trust the marketing things about EE 2.0, but i didn't expect it to be slow. 3. My Sandy Bridge Gfx Drivers is from ATI / AMD?? What is going on?  Does that mean i will never be able to install official drivers from Intel. Given OEM dont normally update their drivers, this sounds like a bad point.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 : Questions.

1. The tweaking is already done.2. Startup shouldn't take more than a minute.3. If the E420 has switchable graphics, then the Intel drivers will have to be provided by AMD, so no, you won't be able to use stock Intel drivers without breaking switchable graphics.

So I just returned a Dell Vostro 3450 b/c of poor build quality and bugs, and I'm looking for a replacement. I have owned a T61p for many years, and love it. Do the TP Edge machines have similar build quality as my trusty T61p? Also, the Dell I returned featured a backlit keyboard, which was actually a surprisingly nice feature. So I would prefer a backlit option, if it's possible... After a lot of searching around, I haven't been able to find anything regarding a backlit keyboard option for the E420 (although, I found a lot of info regarding the previous year's Edge lineup, and a lot of confusion about which machines did or didn't have backlit keyboards). I checked the slbook for the 1141-xxx (non-CTO) for this year's Edge E420, and for "Thinklight" it says "None" and it gives no indication of a backlit keyboard (just 6 row, spill resistent, multimedia FN). So, any chance this has backlit keys standard?? -- Just an optimistic shot in the dark, because I'm guessing that's a "NO," but I had to ask... So finally, is there any chance that a backlit keyboard option will be coming to the E420 CTOs? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Whether or not the laptop is on battery or A/C, the fan "surges" for a second and then is quiet.  Obviously, I understand the need for the fan to come on/off, but what is this 1 second "surge" thing??? Thanks for any replies!

hey zaqxsw,

when this "surge" occurs, does it happen when you startup the unit or it happens when you are doing your work ?

I bought this computer like two weeks ago and all of the sudden the computer won't work at all.  I can't turn it on and the light indicating that the machine is charging won't light up when I plug it in.  The area around where the power cord plugs does get warm though, which makes it seem like the computer is charging.  Any ideas?

Answer:Thinkpad edge e420 is totally unresponsive

take the battery off and ac adapter off, press the on/off button 10 times in 30 sec succession, and then plug everything back. Now restart, if that don't work, then you would to call warranty support.

I have just bought a new Edge E420. Recently it has been shutting down with no warning at all. There is no BSOD, no memory dump (although that is because i have not enabled it) and no noticeable pattern. I have checked event viewer, and sure enough there are several critical errors, all of them being this: Critical ERROR ID: 41. Kernel Power Task 63"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. It's interesting though, as the laptop never reboots. It just simply shuts down with no warning. I'm beginning to think it's either a driver conflict or a thermal problem, as the system does get noticeably warm after very little use. I have installed SpeedFan, and the program reports both physical cores sitting at around 59 degrees celcius. I'm not sure where to go with this. I've reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, and have installed all the required drivers (up to date) though the issue still persists. Any ideas?

Hi,  I have purchased ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4 from Korea with the following configuration:Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.3GHz (up to 2.9GHz with TurboBoost)8GB DDR3 SDRAM - Originally 4GB (1333MHz)Intel HD Graphics 3000 & ATI Radeon HD6630M (1GB dedicated) Although I am Korean, I don't use much of the Korean input and I also type without looking at the keyboard. Also, the keyboard seems a bit "crammed" with the extra letters stuffed onto the keys.  After some comparison with my local retail shops' (Singapore) ThinkPad Edge, I realized the following differences:Right Alt key is replaced by "?/?" (Korean/English input switch)Right Ctrl key is replaced by "??" (Chinese character input)The keys somehow seem to be shaped differently (could be optical illusion due to extra letters on the keys) Is it possible to fit in the fully English keyboard into my ThinkPad Edge?Even if the keyboard does fit, will the English keyboard work as it should, or like the Korean keyboard (with Alt and Ctrl replaced with other functions)?  Thanks in advance hwso1129

My wife has a TP Edge E420, Type 1141-CTO, which I have upgraded since the warrenty ran out. It now is successfully running Windows 10, 64Bit on a 500GB Samsung 840EVO SSD. I would like to replace the WiFi card with a dual-band version which can access the 5GHz.band on our ASUS home router. I've found an Intel Ultimate-n 6300 AGN Pci-e, Model No. 633ANHMW, IBM FRU 60Y3233 for only $12.99. There is also an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205, FRU 60Y3253 listed on Amazon for even less. Is there any chance either of these cards will work in her TP? For those prices I suppose I could just give it a try if no one here knows. Thanks,George

Answer:Upgrade Advice for ThinkPad Edge E420

Hi,

Short answer: I don't think so

As you probably know, WLAN cards are whitelisted in BIOS.  A card must be a listed model AND have a Lenovo FRU number.

The whitelisted cards are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

Looks like a couple of them are dual-band.  A search by FRU number may locate a source.

[edit] A quick look at the BIOS readme didn't indicate that any cards have been added to the list.

Good luck,
Z.

Well I just got a Lenovo E420, and I just wanted to make sure these temperatures are fine. Its a i7-2640m, 6gb ram with AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6630  swtichable graphics. When I turn it on and open the temp monitor (HWMonitor), nothing else open, except for all the other possible lenovo stuff that opens at start up, the temperature of the two cores is around 54-55 degrees, in a 10 minute period it has ranged from 44-61. This is on battery btw, no ac adaptor plugged in. After about 10 minutes, still no programs opened except monitor, it seems temperature of core 1 is about 50 and core 2 about 46. Are these temperatures OK? Also I will let you know on the temperatures when I am actually doing something and should I use something to stress out the CPU and test the temperatures? If so, What should I use? Also I can hear this noise, I don't think it is the fan but something else, sort of like a long beeping noise, not very loud but can still hear it and when i put the laptop close to my ear, can clearly hear it? What could this be? the hard drive?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 Temperatures

Well I think these temps might be normal, but just making sure? so any comments on the first post would be appreciated. I just have a few other questions about cleaning the laptop/keeping it clean as I get a bit OCD about small scratches and stuff. I understand that after a while because of wear especially on the palm rests, there will be some discoloration since they are matte surfaces? So whats the best way to prevent this, also about small scratches(really just discolorations) which there already seems to be some little ones which I have no idea as to how those happened (as i said i can get a bit OCD about this stuff), can you clean them? So basically whats the best way to prevent/clean scratches/discolorations on the matte surfaces especially palm rests, touch pad and cover?

I've seen this topic for other models but not for the E420. I have about 60g left out of my 500G stock HDD and was wondering if I could replace the dvd drive with another hard drive. I'm not sure of the process to do this as I just heard that some laptops let you do the swap. What parts would I need?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 2nd Hard Drive Possible?

you can replace the dvd drive with a hdd caddy, but it is not a Lenovo oem part, this is an aftermarket part. There is a screw on the bottom of the laptop, which holds the optical drive in place, just unscrew that and remove the drive. you can google for the hdd caddy on ebay. You can also get a mSATA drive and put it in your E420.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 laptop that stopped powering on all of a sudden. It was working fine till one day fine and all of a sudden, does not boot up the next morning. I have googled around and looked in Lenovo Forums and it looks like this is a common issue with motherboard on these types of laptops and that lenovo fixed some of these. Unfortunately, my laptop is out of warranty but I do see that Lenovo fixed similar problems for some laptops that are out of warranty. Please see the two threads below https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/thinkpad-e420-wont-start/td-p/755813https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E420-motherboard-problems/td-p/667009/page/10So, I tried calling customer service multiple times hoping that I could get to talk to a supervisor and explain the problem. Just today, I was told I need to agree to pay $575 (which is much more than what the laptop is worth) to even talk to a supervisor. This is quite disappointing. If any Lenovo support staff is monitoring it, can you help here?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 does not boot up and customer service does not help

Its not the motherboard even though they say it is. All they will do is replace the motherboard and it will just fail on you again. I had the exact same issue and the motherboard was replaced. Next day I used it it failed again. You need to remove the CMOS battery which is located underneath the laptop. Its in the compartment with the one screw. Remove that. Remove the battery and all power supply. Then  plug the CMOS back in and  plug in powercord. Once you have done that start up as normal. Press f1 to enter BIOS. Go to the Config tab and under "power options" disable "rapid intel start." That worked for me as a temporary solution.  It clearly isnt a motherboard fault as all Tech support from Lenovo claim it to be. I mean c'mon I had the exact same fault the day after my motherboard was replaced, but after removing CMOS and battery the motherboard magically starts to work?? Must be related to the W5 problem they have been having with BIOS.  Heres a link to another thread with others with the same problem. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-power-issue/td-p/1326979/page/9 Let me know if this helps at all since no one from Lenovo seems to care about helping their own customers... very dissappointed with the customer service. Personally I dont think Ill ever purchase a lenovo product again after their pathetic execuse for "tech support." Anyway good luck!

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... This happened to me today. The solution is to restart the computer and enter the BIOS.  Then use the arrow keys to move to the config tab, then down to the power option, hit enter, scroll down to the disable built-in battery, hit enter, then follow dirctions on the right.  You will unplug the power cord to shut down the computer and when you plug it back in and turn it back on the battery will be recognized.  if not , try the process again as it took me two tries.  hope this helps.

Hi I recently purchased an Edge E420 and noticed there is an additional function if used with Fn Key.. I tried to use it together with the Fn key and the screen shows the function is disabled. Pressed it again and it didn't enable the function back again. I tried the user manual (PDF version) and couldn't find anything related to this problem. By looking at the icon which is printed on the space key I assume it's something to do with the Keyboard's backlit function but never knew when I purchased it. My Thinkpad Edge has the following specs, Core i5/2410MWindows 7 Pro 64 bit Thank you and looking for any of your valuable feedback.

I have a Thinkpad Edge E420 model 1141 CTO - I need to replace the keyboard (spilled coffee and keys are stuck) - since it is out of warranty , I am planning to do it myself - when I looked up for the parts,if I give the model number then the FRU for the keyboard shows up as 04W0764.If I give the serial number also then the FRU will be 04W2631. Which is the right one 04W0764 or 04W2631? Are both models the same? Please advise. Thanks

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E420 Keyboard part number (FRU)

Hi bhaskar39, welcome to the forums,

both are actually correct.  As far as I can tell the 04W2631 is an "older" number which has been replaced by 04W0764. You could also use an 04W0800 which is from a different manufacturer to the other.

Hi, I own a Thinkpad E420 Type 1141-KZQ which was chugging along just fine during my warranty year. It has a Core i5 with ATI Radeon 1GB discrete graphics in switchable mode apart from the Intel HD graphics.    Last month after a seemingly normal shutdown, the laptop wouldn't boot up or startup even with the power plugged in. The service center folks told me that the motherboard would need a replacement. Having just crossed the warrantly period I had to shell out 180$ to get it replaced. Took a month. Just that after I got it back, the switchable graphics does not show 2 options anymore. The Display adapters under Device manager lists only Intel Integrated HD Graphics. I've tried to scan for hardware changes, but it does not seem to pickup the discrete graphics adapter.  What am I missing? Is there something that needs to be enabled at a bios level - I can't see any options there. I've updated the BIOS to the latest version. I've got the latest graphics drivers for the laptop model downloaded and installed from the lenovo website. Do advise.   Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 Display adapter missing

Can anybody advise on the actual motherboard model that is used by my E420 with discrete graphics. I believe they've replaced it with a new motherboard that works but does not have the discrete GPU slot. Thanks

I'm deciding between a thinkpad edge 15 with an i3-370m and a thinkpad edge e420 with an i3-2310 (for the intel hd 3000 graphics-light gamer). However, the e420 (in an ebay listing), says in tech specs "integrated camera: no". Assuming he filled out all the tech specs, is this true? Can an e420 i3-2310m 2.1 GHZ 4GB RAM not have an integrated camera? Or is it just a typo/ error when he typed it? Please answer quick I need to decide quickly which I should buy. If it doesn't have an integrated webcam I will not buy it.

I recently purchased a pre-configured ThinkPad Edge E420 Core i3 -- equipped with Lenovo's most-basic WiFi card. Now, I need to add dual 2.4 / 5.0 GHz capability to this E420. Will the retail version of Intel Centrino-N 6250 (part # 622ANXHMW) be recognized by the ThinkPad BIOS & supported natively thru Lenovo driver updates, same as the Lenovo version of this part -- FRU 60Y3195? (My reason for asking? The Lenovo "FRU" part is ~ 6x more expensive than the widely-available Centrino-N 6250 retail version -- Gasp!) Also, I don't intend to use the 6250 WiMAX (802.16e) feature, so I don't want the card wasting my bandwidth & my patience, by discovering & reporting on available WiMAX access points... Will that feature stay dormant & out of the way, unless or until I elect to use it in the future? I hope that I'm being needlessly cautious, but I was spooked by seeing numerous references stating that the similar Intel Centrino-N 6200/6205 are NOT compatible with Lenovo ThinkPads... My sincere TIA to all who choose to respond!

Answer:Dual-band WiFi Upgrade for ThinkPad Edge E420

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_unauthorized_MiniPCI_network_card

Hi deltaman and welcome to the forums,

Lenovo has a whitelist in the bios that will produce an error that you can't boot past if you put a non-Lenovo branded card in there.  The reason for the whitelist is that the card is matched to the antenna in order to be compliant with FCC regulations regarding interference.  The only way around the whitelist is to modify the bios to accept the non-Lenovo card, but on a machine as new as yours, there hasn't been one made yet. So, you would be stuck with buying the Lenovo-branded card.

As far as disabling the WiMAX feature, I'm sure there's a way to do it, I've just never had of those cards so I'm just not sure how.  Maybe someone who does will chime in here.

ThinkPad T61 (7665-11U) display problem. The display always appears after boot. However, occationally the display suffers either of two problems, seemingly with no cause: 1) "flutter"-- where bightness quickly cycles, alternates from side-to-side; or,2) it will go dark--the image is barely visible and the laptop responds to input (mouse, keyboard, etc). Either problem is intermittant. The display works normally otherwise. The fan is operational and the laptop does not run "hot". In fact, either problem cannot be induced by:-  open/closing the display, or pivoting hte hinges;-  gentle flexing of the laptop case;-  pressure on the keyboard and palm rests.. This is a hardware problem--not a software problem. I opened the laptop and inspected relevent ribbon connections, which appeared normal. A keyword search of this forum and others reveals all variety of display issues afflicting ThinkPad laptops, but I find no anecdotes identical to mine. Anyone experience either or both of these problems--and successfully identy their cause and repair them?

Answer:ThinkPad T61 Display Problems -- Brightness Flutter, or Goes Dark

Welcome to the forum!

The only foolproof way of testing the machine in question would be with another complete, *known good* LCD assembly. That would point to either a screen or graphics card deficiency...

My bet would be along the lines of a graphics card going haywire once the machine warms up, but it's really difficult to say from a distance...

Good luck.

First of all: lowering brightness does not help, I tried it.

On my monitor it seems like everything is too bright, as in places that should be pitch black are a bit too light. For example: on my iPod, even with full brightness settings everything looks normal, but on my PC's monitor it just doesn't look right.

I calibrated color and setting gamma way low really helped, but my contrast is set to full, and my brightness is 75.

The strange thing: when I ran Crysis 1, it fixed the monitor color! So I know the darn thing is capable, I just don't know how to.

When I closed down Crysis it went back to normal.

Hi, I just got a thinkpad edge e420 and I have noticed a high frequency/high pitch noise as well as a whirring sort of noise (sometimes, might just be hard drive tho). It is quite soft and I can only really hear it when I am in my bed at night with the laptop. It can get quite annoying. I have heard of similar problems like this when I did a search but no clear solution.  Where exactly is the noise coming from?Is there a solution? Is this normal for all e420 or is it just a very common problem that may require warranty service?

it is not really a problem, there is no real solution to this whining problem, as per the discussion we had on whirlpool.

Hello,

I'm using Windows 8.1 and I managed several times to darken my screen just by decreasing brightness of my screen to absolutely minimum (on my keyboard by pressing buttons "Fn" and "left arrow"). No just decrease brightness, but to completely turn off the screen.
But today I realized, that after Windows update I can't do that and I'm confused.
Maybe the previous functionality is because I had enabled option "Auto-adjust brightness", so the screen was darken so much (in particular level), so that when I decrease brightness to minimum, it was darken so much in the minimum brightness level and looked like the screen is black, but it wasn't.

Is it even possible, that before the update I could have done such a thing? Does Windows allow to decrease brightness to (almost) black?

I have notebook Acer Aspire and graphic card drivers are up to date.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I have a brand new Thinkpad Edge E425 and the brightness buttons stopped working. Not only that, the brightness won't adjust in the power control either. I uninstalled and re-installed the power station program and the drivers and the brightness buttons worked for one day and then stopped again. However, when it was working the graphic wouldn't come up. It almost seems like the power station isn't working at all because I set it to save battery power and the time my battery lasts doesn't change.

Hey guys,

So in the last few weeks, I have come across a rather perplexing issue with my Toshiba Satellite laptop. I have it hooked up to an external display via HDMI and that display works perfectly fine, but the laptop monitor is extremely dark, to the point where it is just barely possible to make out what is on the display. I know this is not a hardware issue as the laptop display works perfectly fine in Arch Linux, and I have tried multiple attempts at remedying the issue including adjusting the brightness with the function keys and re installing/updating the driver for the integrated graphics. I have also tried restoring to the earliest system restore image and that hasn't helped either

Answer:Extremely dark screen on laptop

Hi thehoppingbunny and welcome to Seven Forums.

Have you tried adjusting the brightness of the screen without using the function keys?
(i.e adjusting the brightness in power options?)

When did the screen start turn extremely dark? Can you remember any updates or major changes you made to your laptop?

When you say it works perfectly fine in Arch Linux, did you have just the Linux OS installed or Windows 7 as well?

The problem could be the highly unlikely event that the driver for your integrated graphics could have a bug or issue. Have you tried rolling your graphics driver back to the previous version? Did you have to reinstall the graphics driver on the Linux OS?

Hey! So I bought my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 about a year and a half ago, and right out of the box this brand new computer was EXTREMELY slow. Internet pages load extremely slow, games play choppy and slow, I cannot watch streams with my computer, and I cannot view HD videos on any platform. This should not be happening with a brand new computer with 16 gigs of ram. I should've submitted it for repair or returned it earlier but I guess I always thought I would find the problem and download a driver or something and the problem would be fixed, but alas, it is still functioning like a laptop from 2001. Any advice or help is much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 extremely slow

Hi Monger,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Maybe you would want to remove any unnecessary think vantage software?s or other software?s that you don't need.

Additionally try updating the OS and drivers, you can let Windows update do this.

Try disabling all start-up programs, to see if's it's a faulty program. The easiest way is to use the msconfig program. I would also try seeing what program is eating up the resources, ctrl+shift+esc.

I hope the above information helps.

They don't make them like they used to. I purchased a ThinkPad E420 for my daughter less than 6 month ago, thinking it would be durable while she studied overseas. The LCD screen cracked with the cover closed while in her backpack. Lenovo denies responsibility and it will cost $750 to have them repair it. Price quoted just for shipping new screen to US is $300. She is now in South Africa. Any suggestions for getting repair done cost effectively most appreciated. I spent $650 to buy this computer, thinking we were making an investment in a durable machine. Disappointed in the quality and also the failure to stand by their products - a caution to future purchasers.

Sorry to have to welcome you to the Forum under these circumstances.

Here is one way of doing it.  Buy it aftermarket and contract a local computer repair service to install it.

There's a lot of parts on Ebay right now for the E420.  There's also a link on this one to check the Fru number against your Model number.

Hello!I just got my yoga 2 a couple of days ago. I was really exited but this is a total turn-off.First when I fired it up I noticed the screene was dark so I was doing what ever I could to set it right. Reading online, installing drivers auto brightness bla, bla... To get to the point. I finaly settled with the dark screen when nothing seemd to work. But earlier today I went to the local electronics store and I noticed they had the same model set up for testing and viewing. That screen looked crisp and sharp, really bright aswell. So I figured there must be something wrong with my computer alone. Is this a regular problem and what should I do?Thanks best regards, your swedish "lenovo user" Jonas

Answer:yoga 2 pro dark screen/constantly low brightness

Have you turned off auto-dimming?I think you need to do it in two places - one is the 'old' control panel Power settings and the other is the new Charms Bar --> Settings --> Change PC Settings --> PCs and Devices --> Power and sleep.I've been much happier with the brightness of my screen since I did this.

Hi, I have this issue on a laptop I just replaced the cracked screen for.The screen turns black after more or less 5 min. when the brightness is set to maximum. If I dim the screen a little, the screen works just fine for all the time I work with the laptop. In all cases I can see the screen, it is the backlight that goes totally off. I installed this BIOS just to be sure it would have not been rectified: 7FETC7WW 2.27-1.08 When lowering the screen as to close the laptop, the backlight goes back on. Any idea, anyone else experiencing this issue or has solved it?

Answer:T61P - Screen goes dark after a while when on maximum brightness

I have windows 10 installed on my laptop
This is not a problem I have had before
I have to shine a flashlight at my computer screen in order to see anything. When I open the display settings, it says my brightness is already at 100%, and nothing changes when I drag the slider, or when I plug it in. The brightness won't change when using the Fn key either. I tried disabling and re-enabling the display adapter and that didn't work either. I have also tried restarting my computer but again nothing changed. I don't know what could have caused this to happen; I've had this computer for a year and have never experienced this.
Any help to fix this problem would be appreciated!

Hi,
I've an old Satellite Pro 4300 that I upgraded for my daughter last Summer.
I spent some time putting everything just right, upgrading memory to the max and installing Windows 2000.

She's just given it back to me as she has a new model....and I sort of needed the laptop.
Anyway, although it starts up, the screen is very very dark....totally unuseable.
Strangely, the display is dark during the BIOS part of the startup routine as well.

I've tried lots of combinations of F keys to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Phil

Answer:Screen brightness on Satellite Pro 4300 very dark

Hello Phil

Pleae notice that key combination usage for brightness settings works just when OS is started and if some Toshiba designed tools are preinstalled. If this occurs while notebook booting too and the BIOS settings are not visible correctly I presume the FL inverter (background illumination) is defective and must be exchanged.

I left laptop open with screen saver on and when I came back it was black. I can see the screen barely, and only, if I shine a flashlight on it. It's working I just can't see it. It originally had Vista on it but was upgraded years ago to Windows 7.

The pm-driver seems not to work (-> WINDWOS XP). CPU frequency is always at 1,9GHz (2,5 GHz) and energie profiles which are set in (lenovo) energie manager have no effect. In power-on-mode display is ok, but in battery mode its very dark (no effect with f6/f7 without fn). How can i increase display brightness in battery mode? Is there a registration key i could change? Hi Wale3D_ArshaD,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that you are facing the issue with On Screen Display on your ThinkPad Edge 15.

To resolve this issue you have to install hot key features application.
Please click here to download the application and run the setup.

Note: Make sure Display driver is installed on your system, because hot key feature application requires Display drivers to work on the brightness function keys.

Hope this helps.

I have a fairly new (3 month old) Lenovo ideapad Y530. My laptop screen will occassionally (anywhere from a few times per day to a few times per week) go completly black or get too dim to read anything on the screen. In the past closing the laptop lid for a few seconds and then opening it again fixed it, but that fix is becoming less and less reliable.  Sometimes if I open the lid slowly the screen will flicker on for a second and then go black again. Since I have had this computer the screen shuts off during boot up and then goes extremely dim during the login until you click the mouse, I assumed this was normal or not a big deal. I was doing searches for this problem in the forum and I noticed someone talking about how it happened when they moved it and my experience is beginning to corroborate that though I don't feel there is a conclusive link yet. Unfortunately on subsequent searches of this forum I could not find the post.  The power management settings appear to have no effect. It happens no matter what power mode I am in nor does it matter if I am plugged in or not. I set my screen to never turn off if I was plugged in on high performace and it still happened. It does not appear to be a heat issue either as it has turned off mere minutes into a fairly low intensity session. I went to the Lenovo support site for display drivers, but it says that the driver they have posted is older than the one I have currently installed.&nb... Hello, Last night, my ThinkPad E420 started making a small high-pitched noise, which reminded me of the time when my previous computer's hard drive was actually "dumping" data because the device that wrote to it was physically damaging the hard drive. I am convinced that this is the case again.  After turning my computer on, it leads straight to a screen that says "Windows Error Recovery". The options are to Launch Startup Repair, and Start Windows Normally. It doesn't matter which one I select, as either one leads to a screen that says "Windows is loading files...". Finally, I am stuck on a screen that has an image of a life preserver and it says "ThinkVantageTechnologies". Nothing happens after this. The last time this happened to me, I had an HP Laptop, and I had to remove the hard drive and attach it to another device that recovered the data.  I did not attempt to reinstall a new hard drive and reboot the Operating System on that computer. Instead, I purchased this one. Does anyone know what options I have? Thank you.

Hey guys,

after updating to Windows 10, I am not able to get the screen brightness to 100% anymore (it is shown to be 100%, but plugging my laptop in, screen brightness will increase to maximum brightness). Screen settings are as shown below.

Maybe anyone has an idea?

I also tried using the command line:

This allows me to change the brightness, however 100% is still not really 100% when on battery.

Answer:On-Battery Screen Brightness Too Dark After Win8.1->Win10 Update

Hello,
Are you talking about when the PC is on battery the screen brightness is not max?
If so then since you have it on 100% it should be the same but some times you will have to put down then back up the brightness when going on battery because it will auto adjust to low automatically to save battery power.

For the past few days, everytime I connect the power cord, the screen goes dark for a second. The same thing happens when I disconnect the power cord. Can someone help me find out what is wrong with it? Is it a hardware issue or is it just a momentary glitch (It just started happening yesterday)? My laptop is brand new so I can use the warranty if i have to. OS: Win 8 Thank you.

Answer:Edge 540 model : when I connect/disconnect AC power cord, screen goes dark

this is a normal behaviour it happens all the time. It is your refresh rate changing between different power setting. Set the screen refresh rate at 60 hz for both battery and with ac adapter connected this should prevent the momentary blanking of the lcd.

When I connect laptop to external monitor through VGA, I can see my computer, so the graphics card is OK, right? When I bring a flashlight close to the screen I can see my computer although very very dim. I replaced the screen with a new screen but still same problem. I read in the forums that the LCD inverter might have gone bad, but then in the screen specfication they say that this screen does not need an inverter. I am completely confused as to what might be the problem? Help anyone!!!-Ved

hi everyonefew days ago I installed my new Edge 91z. Everything is fine, except the fact that the screen has a weird glare we are not able to fine tune. I tried both the buttons on the monitor (the ones close to the switch on button), and using the "color optimization" in the  advanced Intel graphic ad multimedia panel, but looking at the screen it's still tiring. I found some review of the pc, and it seems they complain about the screen glare as well: "Glossy screen reflections." and "Sadly, this choice of material makes ThinkCentre Edge 91z prone to ambient light glare. " any help on this?thanks in advance

I just got my E420 yesterday and I'm quite happy with it... but my battery is a bit loose on the laptop which kind of annoys me... and the right button makes a clicky noise when I press it, like the bottom right side of the keyboard isnt fully intact. Lastly, the brightness stayed constant when i tried to adjust it... I've tried using the keyboard (F7 and F8), i've also tried it changing the settings thru Power Manager... but no luck ;( What can i do to fix this? >_< Another question, does the laptop use energy directly from outlet after battery is fully charged? Like it doesn't use the energy from battery and having the battery charging constantly...

Answer:Can't Adjust Brightness on E420!

hey MaggieThinkPad,on the part of the brightness, uninstall Hotkey and Power Manager. go to http://support.lenovo.com and download the latest and install.and nope, the battery will stop charging when it is completely charged. So when its at 100% and the adapter is connected, the laptop will use adapter power.

On my Thinkpad, the brightness is to low, even if I increase it to maximum. The only thing that seems to get the brightness to work correctly is connecting the laptop to an AC adapter.  What could my issue be?

Answer:Screen Brightness to Low on High on Thinkpad T60

The maximum brightness in battery mode is less than in AC-mode to save battery power. You can  increase it in the BIOS under Config - Display - Brightness setting the value to "high" (see explanation text on the right side after selecting that item).

Hello,     I have a E420 laptop. I am running windows7 64 bit on it. The brightness of screen keeps changing automatically whenever I change from one application to another. If the application has a black background (like using a terminal), the brightness is auto adjusted. This is specially true if the room is not well lit. I heard this may be due to the ambient light sensor. Does the E420 have an ambient light sensor?     I have installed the Lenovo Power management software to see if I can disable this auto adjusting of brightness. NO success so far. This is hurting my eyes too much, can I please know if there is a solution to this! Thanks,-Keshav

Answer:E420 Brightness auto adjusting

I've noticed this too. could be a dynamic contrast feature to protect your eyes or something, or it could be the lag in the screen.

Hi I have a brand new E520 and I love it. But there's a quite annoying problem with the screen: it tends to change brightness (it gets brighter or darker in 3 or 4 steps). Could anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

My E520, which I bought about 2 weeks ago, also has a problem nearly like you. When screen returns after turning off for energy saver, its contrast becomes extremely high. I have to wait for a few minutes for it to turn back to normal. Besides, one more symptom is that if I use the buttons for decrease brightness, the lowest level is 2, not 1. I found that it's the Thinkpad Video Features ( Intel Hurom River GT1/GT2) for Windows 7 64 bit. I restored my laptop to before the time I install it, and everything's ok. By the way, it seems that Lenovo usually has problems about driver, isn't it?

Hi all, I would like to share my recent experience of Thinkpad X1 carbon (4th 2016) screen brightness problem, and how this problem been solved. The laptop cames good and the F5 and F6 function for screen brightness adjusting is OK. Other methods, like in the setting menu and battery menu,  to adjust the brightness are all OK.After one hour or one day or some short time, you will find you cannot adjust the brightness. Even the battery & power options are not working. The problem comes from the driver. First I thought it is the problem of driver of monitor (wide viewing angle high density flexview display 2560x1440 driver). I uninstall, update, change...but none of them work. Finally, I find it is the problem of intel hd graphics 520 . There is another evidence that during the time only this driver of intel hd graphics 520 has been updated automaticly to the latest version! So I uninstall and roll back to the version 20.19.15.4331 and the problem is solved.I did not check the lates version of this driver. But I am sure that the latest version of intel hd graphics 520 has conflict with the lenovo driver for screen brightness! I am sure there are other people face the same problem after the update of hd graphics 520 driver. Any engineer please check it!

I have two little problems with my new E420 (not E420s) with ATI HD6630M (64bit Windows 7) 1141-7EG First problem:Brightness goes down from step 15 to 2 but from 2 to 0 it goes up again. Second problem:This must by ATI related. All newer games (dx10/11 I think) and fullscreen flash are displayed shrinked horizontally thus there is one black bar on right (native resolution!) Here's an example with youtube:http://min.us/mvbx9HsAlso I'd like to note that cursor properly uses whole screen, i highlight the fullscreen button by moving cursor where it is supposed to be not where the button currently is (I think this detail might ease up finding a solution)#UPDATEInstalled mobility 11.6 from here: http://www2.ati.com/DriVeRs/mobile/11-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe and there's no more shrinking

I reformatted my X220i last night. I downloaded all the drivers via Lenovos website. Everything seems to work fine except a couple things; 1) This is the big one--the screen brightness buttons don't work. All of the other Fn keys work, so I'm unsure what the problem could be. Furthermore, I can't change the brightness by adjusting the power settings. it's stuck at a VERY low brightness level and I can barely see this text as I type it--super frustrating! 2) The display is showing in up in control panel as "Generic PnP Monitor"--perhaps the two issues are correlated? 3) Not a problem persay, but in WIE my graphics/gaming graphics scores a 1. I downloaded the drivers, so i have no clue why! Thanks guys. I really need to get this brightness thing figured out--any ideas/suggestions would be of great help to me.

1. How did you install OS and drivers? Was it clear (fresh) installation or from the factory recovery media? Did you use Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update application for Lenovo drivers and software?2. You can download needed monitor file from the Lenovo site:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015012But this issue doesn't related the 1st one.3. It seems the chipset drivers has not been installed correctly. In which sequence did you install Lenovo drivers and OS upgrades?

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS. This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I canīt.

I just changed my ThinkPad T450 laptop screen to a full-HD IPS display. The new panel (display) shows up in the Device Manager with Hardware ID MONITOR\LGD03FF. While the screen works, I can no longer adjust the brightness in Windows 10 - it's always on full brightness and the brightness key combinations no longer work (nor do any of the Windows 10 software brightness controls). The brightness adjustment keys work perfectly in Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), and they work if I go in to the BIOS. The monitor is showing up in the Device Manager as "Generic PnP Monitor". Any idea how to get brightness working in Windows 10 with the LGD03FF panel?

Answer:Brightness not adjustable on ThinkPad T450 after changing screen (to LGD03FF)

unless you have a panel with an fru number corresponding to t450, the eeid (configuration chip on the panel) won't have the correct info to allow brightness control.
