Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Edge E420 display problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I own a Thinkpad E420 Type 1141-KZQ which was chugging along just fine during my warranty year. It has a Core i5 with ATI Radeon 1GB discrete graphics in switchable mode apart from the Intel HD graphics.    Last month after a seemingly normal shutdown, the laptop wouldn't boot up or startup even with the power plugged in. The service center folks told me that the motherboard would need a replacement. Having just crossed the warrantly period I had to shell out 180$ to get it replaced. Took a month. Just that after I got it back, the switchable graphics does not show 2 options anymore. The Display adapters under Device manager lists only Intel Integrated HD Graphics. I've tried to scan for hardware changes, but it does not seem to pickup the discrete graphics adapter.  What am I missing? Is there something that needs to be enabled at a bios level - I can't see any options there. I've updated the BIOS to the latest version. I've got the latest graphics drivers for the laptop model downloaded and installed from the lenovo website. Do advise.   Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 Display adapter missing

Can anybody advise on the actual motherboard model that is used by my E420 with discrete graphics. I believe they've replaced it with a new motherboard that works but does not have the discrete GPU slot. Thanks

Question: thinkpad edge e420

I was just wondering what everyones take is on the edge e420?I was looking at one and i was just wondering if anyone has encountered any major problems with them and if they are pretty good for the price. I noticed that the e420 has a large touch pad and the one im looking at has the core i3 23XX series with hd 3000 is what the specs claim. Also Im using a thinkpad t41 right now and how much different is everything, mean im running windows 7 ultimate on the t41 but without aero cause of the 32mb ati chipset. does the e420 have a good keyboard and is it better than say an hp or asus laptops on longevity and quality. Also is there any major flexing of the laptop? some insight would be nice

Answer:thinkpad edge e420

I have the I5 2410m version with win home prem (1141-a24) and I have been very happy with it so far. Previous ThinkPads z60t, t43.I picked up my E420 the first part of January. So far seems like a pretty solid computer. The experience has been very smooth (I have been meticulous about checking that I have the latest updates). Really impressed with it so far.My t43 (2gb Pentium M, 2GB DDR2, ATI graphics, and 1400 x 1040 screen) was running win 7 Ult. The user experience has been very nice (don't know how else to explain it.) Fast boot (30sec), quickly loads most programs... overall, every aspect has been very consistent and predictable.Flex is not an issue. I have not opened it up to see how its put together, but its pretty ridged. I should also mention that it is super light compared to any notebook I have ever owned. So, now the bad...or rather, observed items that I would probably change: I miss my ultra bay (the drive that is installed is pretty nice, I just don't like the outer cover. I worry about grabbing it oddly and breaking it..not a big deal though), I miss my ThinkLight, and the front 'edge' of the Edge can feel kind of sharp to your wrists if you type in certain angles. The chicklet keyboard is up to lenovo standards in my opinion (however, I do miss my t43 keyboard).Notables: The LED screen is wonderful, and I have very glad that its offered in anti glare. The front facing speakers sound very nice.Bottom line. Nice computer, and IT IS very much a ThinkPad, but it n... Read more

I am thinking of buying this laptop (Specs would be i7-2640m, 6gb ram, 500gb 5400rpm hard drive, AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6630, I'm in Australia) and wanted a few opinions on it. Particularly, if there are any owners here/people who have used it: How is the build quality? How is the Performance? How is the battery life? Thanks!

So I just returned a Dell Vostro 3450 b/c of poor build quality and bugs, and I'm looking for a replacement. I have owned a T61p for many years, and love it. Do the TP Edge machines have similar build quality as my trusty T61p? Also, the Dell I returned featured a backlit keyboard, which was actually a surprisingly nice feature. So I would prefer a backlit option, if it's possible... After a lot of searching around, I haven't been able to find anything regarding a backlit keyboard option for the E420 (although, I found a lot of info regarding the previous year's Edge lineup, and a lot of confusion about which machines did or didn't have backlit keyboards). I checked the slbook for the 1141-xxx (non-CTO) for this year's Edge E420, and for "Thinklight" it says "None" and it gives no indication of a backlit keyboard (just 6 row, spill resistent, multimedia FN). So, any chance this has backlit keys standard?? -- Just an optimistic shot in the dark, because I'm guessing that's a "NO," but I had to ask... So finally, is there any chance that a backlit keyboard option will be coming to the E420 CTOs? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Answer:Considering ThinkPad Edge E420 - Have a question

i believe if you do a little googling and research you can find out the comparison between the e420 and the T model line. i know for a fact that the thinklight is only on the e420s version. you might want to read a bit what the difference are between the 420 vs the 420s version

Whether or not the laptop is on battery or A/C, the fan "surges" for a second and then is quiet.  Obviously, I understand the need for the fan to come on/off, but what is this 1 second "surge" thing??? Thanks for any replies!

hey zaqxsw,

when this "surge" occurs, does it happen when you startup the unit or it happens when you are doing your work ?

Hi, My "fn" key seems to sporadically stop working properly.  Most of the time, pressing it along with F1, F2, or any of those buttons does not seem to produce any result.  It randomly starts working at times, but only for a minute.   Strangely, the only way I can get it to actually work is by holding it down for ~30 seconds causing a dialogue box entitled "Thinkpad Keyboards Properties" to open.  While the dialogue is open, the fn key works properly- but again, only temporarily.   Things I have tried: 1)  Restarting my computer. 2)  Switching the "fn" and "ctrl" keys in the BIOS. 3)  Enabling and disabling legacy mode (changing whether or not you need to press fn to access the F1/ F2 etc. keys) 4)  Updating all drivers. 5)  Performing a system restore to a time before I recall having the problem. 6)  Performing an authentic rain dance and cursing the heavens. The OS I'm using is Windows 7.  No other solutions I've found online have worked.  As far as I know, there has been no physical damage or liquid damage to my computer.  I haven't downloaded any strange programs recently that could be linked to this.  Nothing else has malfunctioned besides this button.  It's frustrating because I use both the F keys and the 'control volume' keys regularly, so I can't just remain in default or legacy mode as I would need to switch back and forth ... 1. Where is Enhanced Experience 2.0? Or are the tweaking already done? 2. If it is already done, then my startup is very slow. I am comparing to a System of my old Toshiba, which start up faster then this Lenovo Enhanced Experienced 2.0 Thinkpad Edge E420. My old laptop is a Pentium M 1.8Ghz Single Core, 1GB DDR 1 Ram, and a UATA 33 5200Rpm HDD. I dont trust the marketing things about EE 2.0, but i didn't expect it to be slow. 3. My Sandy Bridge Gfx Drivers is from ATI / AMD?? What is going on?  Does that mean i will never be able to install official drivers from Intel. Given OEM dont normally update their drivers, this sounds like a bad point.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 : Questions.

1. The tweaking is already done.2. Startup shouldn't take more than a minute.3. If the E420 has switchable graphics, then the Intel drivers will have to be provided by AMD, so no, you won't be able to use stock Intel drivers without breaking switchable graphics.

Hi, everyone.  I have a ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4.  I am currently considering a RAM upgrade to 8 GB, as I have 4GB DDR3 RAM and there is one DIMM slot available. The specs of the current RAM are written below. Source: SPDMemory Size: 4.00 GBMemory Type: DDR3-SDRAM (1333 MHz)Memory Manufacturer: SamsungMemory Manufacture Date: Week 19, Year 2011Memory Part Number: M471B5273DH0-CH9  My questions are:1. Do I have to match the manufacturer (Samsung)?2. Do I have to match the clock speed (1333 MHz)?3. What else do I have to know before upgrading the RAM?  Thanks

Answer:RAM Upgrade for ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4

hey hwso1129,you do not need to use the same manufacturer but i do recommend you use the same clock speed.it's kinda like using bigfoot tires at the back of your car and using normal tires in the front. The car will still move but it'll feel weird.

I've seen this topic for other models but not for the E420. I have about 60g left out of my 500G stock HDD and was wondering if I could replace the dvd drive with another hard drive. I'm not sure of the process to do this as I just heard that some laptops let you do the swap. What parts would I need?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 2nd Hard Drive Possible?

you can replace the dvd drive with a hdd caddy, but it is not a Lenovo oem part, this is an aftermarket part. There is a screw on the bottom of the laptop, which holds the optical drive in place, just unscrew that and remove the drive. you can google for the hdd caddy on ebay. You can also get a mSATA drive and put it in your E420.

My wife has a TP Edge E420, Type 1141-CTO, which I have upgraded since the warrenty ran out. It now is successfully running Windows 10, 64Bit on a 500GB Samsung 840EVO SSD. I would like to replace the WiFi card with a dual-band version which can access the 5GHz.band on our ASUS home router. I've found an Intel Ultimate-n 6300 AGN Pci-e, Model No. 633ANHMW, IBM FRU 60Y3233 for only $12.99. There is also an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205, FRU 60Y3253 listed on Amazon for even less. Is there any chance either of these cards will work in her TP? For those prices I suppose I could just give it a try if no one here knows. Thanks,George

Answer:Upgrade Advice for ThinkPad Edge E420

Hi,

Short answer: I don't think so

As you probably know, WLAN cards are whitelisted in BIOS.  A card must be a listed model AND have a Lenovo FRU number.

The whitelisted cards are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

Looks like a couple of them are dual-band.  A search by FRU number may locate a source.

[edit] A quick look at the BIOS readme didn't indicate that any cards have been added to the list.

Good luck,
Z.

I bought this computer like two weeks ago and all of the sudden the computer won't work at all.  I can't turn it on and the light indicating that the machine is charging won't light up when I plug it in.  The area around where the power cord plugs does get warm though, which makes it seem like the computer is charging.  Any ideas?

take the battery off and ac adapter off, press the on/off button 10 times in 30 sec succession, and then plug everything back. Now restart, if that don't work, then you would to call warranty support.

Then when i restart it, it did't boot properly but always restarting.  Hi,  I have purchased ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4 from Korea with the following configuration:Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.3GHz (up to 2.9GHz with TurboBoost)8GB DDR3 SDRAM - Originally 4GB (1333MHz)Intel HD Graphics 3000 & ATI Radeon HD6630M (1GB dedicated) Although I am Korean, I don't use much of the Korean input and I also type without looking at the keyboard. Also, the keyboard seems a bit "crammed" with the extra letters stuffed onto the keys.  After some comparison with my local retail shops' (Singapore) ThinkPad Edge, I realized the following differences:Right Alt key is replaced by "?/?" (Korean/English input switch)Right Ctrl key is replaced by "??" (Chinese character input)The keys somehow seem to be shaped differently (could be optical illusion due to extra letters on the keys) Is it possible to fit in the fully English keyboard into my ThinkPad Edge?Even if the keyboard does fit, will the English keyboard work as it should, or like the Korean keyboard (with Alt and Ctrl replaced with other functions)?  Thanks in advance hwso1129

Well I just got a Lenovo E420, and I just wanted to make sure these temperatures are fine. Its a i7-2640m, 6gb ram with AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6630  swtichable graphics. When I turn it on and open the temp monitor (HWMonitor), nothing else open, except for all the other possible lenovo stuff that opens at start up, the temperature of the two cores is around 54-55 degrees, in a 10 minute period it has ranged from 44-61. This is on battery btw, no ac adaptor plugged in. After about 10 minutes, still no programs opened except monitor, it seems temperature of core 1 is about 50 and core 2 about 46. Are these temperatures OK? Also I will let you know on the temperatures when I am actually doing something and should I use something to stress out the CPU and test the temperatures? If so, What should I use? Also I can hear this noise, I don't think it is the fan but something else, sort of like a long beeping noise, not very loud but can still hear it and when i put the laptop close to my ear, can clearly hear it? What could this be? the hard drive?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 Temperatures

Well I think these temps might be normal, but just making sure? so any comments on the first post would be appreciated. I just have a few other questions about cleaning the laptop/keeping it clean as I get a bit OCD about small scratches and stuff. I understand that after a while because of wear especially on the palm rests, there will be some discoloration since they are matte surfaces? So whats the best way to prevent this, also about small scratches(really just discolorations) which there already seems to be some little ones which I have no idea as to how those happened (as i said i can get a bit OCD about this stuff), can you clean them? So basically whats the best way to prevent/clean scratches/discolorations on the matte surfaces especially palm rests, touch pad and cover?

I have just bought a new Edge E420. Recently it has been shutting down with no warning at all. There is no BSOD, no memory dump (although that is because i have not enabled it) and no noticeable pattern. I have checked event viewer, and sure enough there are several critical errors, all of them being this: Critical ERROR ID: 41. Kernel Power Task 63"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. It's interesting though, as the laptop never reboots. It just simply shuts down with no warning. I'm beginning to think it's either a driver conflict or a thermal problem, as the system does get noticeably warm after very little use. I have installed SpeedFan, and the program reports both physical cores sitting at around 59 degrees celcius. I'm not sure where to go with this. I've reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, and have installed all the required drivers (up to date) though the issue still persists. Any ideas?

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... This happened to me today. The solution is to restart the computer and enter the BIOS.  Then use the arrow keys to move to the config tab, then down to the power option, hit enter, scroll down to the disable built-in battery, hit enter, then follow dirctions on the right.  You will unplug the power cord to shut down the computer and when you plug it back in and turn it back on the battery will be recognized.  if not , try the process again as it took me two tries.  hope this helps.

Hi bhaskar39, welcome to the forums,

both are actually correct.  As far as I can tell the 04W2631 is an "older" number which has been replaced by 04W0764. You could also use an 04W0800 which is from a different manufacturer to the other.

Hi, The screen on my my Edge 420 has gone really dark to the point where I need to shine a light onto it to be able to see anything (only just). I hadn`t changed anything before this occured. The computer works fine connected to my TV using that as the monitor. I`ve done some searching on this forum and tried the following to no avail:- Restart with power unplugged- Restart with power plugged in but no battery.- Held down the power button for several 1 minute intervals with the power adapter + battery out.- Using TV as the monitor: Adjusted brightness settings to maximum in Control Panel (Power Options)- Within Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel: Unticked Image Enhancement (Auto Adjust) plus unticked Film Mode Detection plus unticked Display Power Saving Technology.- Checked my Intel Graphics driver was up-to-date. I`m not great with computers but now suspect a faulty screen inverter or a motherboard problem. Pretty annoyed that this has happed to an 18 month old machine which rarely leaves my desk at home. My previous Thinkpad lasted 6 years which is why I bought this one. Could anyone suggest any other things I could try or direct me to a cost effective way to have it professionally repared? Thankyou,Roger

I'm deciding between a thinkpad edge 15 with an i3-370m and a thinkpad edge e420 with an i3-2310 (for the intel hd 3000 graphics-light gamer). However, the e420 (in an ebay listing), says in tech specs "integrated camera: no". Assuming he filled out all the tech specs, is this true? Can an e420 i3-2310m 2.1 GHZ 4GB RAM not have an integrated camera? Or is it just a typo/ error when he typed it? Please answer quick I need to decide quickly which I should buy. If it doesn't have an integrated webcam I will not buy it.

Answer:Do all ThinkPad Edge E420 Laptops have an integrated camera?

hey Stealtshsz,i believe the listing is wrong as the tech specs >> http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/e420_tech_specs.pdfmentions that there is an integrated camera

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 laptop that stopped powering on all of a sudden. It was working fine till one day fine and all of a sudden, does not boot up the next morning. I have googled around and looked in Lenovo Forums and it looks like this is a common issue with motherboard on these types of laptops and that lenovo fixed some of these. Unfortunately, my laptop is out of warranty but I do see that Lenovo fixed similar problems for some laptops that are out of warranty. Please see the two threads below https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/thinkpad-e420-wont-start/td-p/755813https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E420-motherboard-problems/td-p/667009/page/10So, I tried calling customer service multiple times hoping that I could get to talk to a supervisor and explain the problem. Just today, I was told I need to agree to pay $575 (which is much more than what the laptop is worth) to even talk to a supervisor. This is quite disappointing. If any Lenovo support staff is monitoring it, can you help here?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 does not boot up and customer service does not help

Its not the motherboard even though they say it is. All they will do is replace the motherboard and it will just fail on you again. I had the exact same issue and the motherboard was replaced. Next day I used it it failed again. You need to remove the CMOS battery which is located underneath the laptop. Its in the compartment with the one screw. Remove that. Remove the battery and all power supply. Then  plug the CMOS back in and  plug in powercord. Once you have done that start up as normal. Press f1 to enter BIOS. Go to the Config tab and under "power options" disable "rapid intel start." That worked for me as a temporary solution.  It clearly isnt a motherboard fault as all Tech support from Lenovo claim it to be. I mean c'mon I had the exact same fault the day after my motherboard was replaced, but after removing CMOS and battery the motherboard magically starts to work?? Must be related to the W5 problem they have been having with BIOS.  Heres a link to another thread with others with the same problem. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-power-issue/td-p/1326979/page/9 Let me know if this helps at all since no one from Lenovo seems to care about helping their own customers... very dissappointed with the customer service. Personally I dont think Ill ever purchase a lenovo product again after their pathetic execuse for "tech support." Anyway good luck!

Hi I recently purchased an Edge E420 and noticed there is an additional function if used with Fn Key.. I tried to use it together with the Fn key and the screen shows the function is disabled. Pressed it again and it didn't enable the function back again. I tried the user manual (PDF version) and couldn't find anything related to this problem. By looking at the icon which is printed on the space key I assume it's something to do with the Keyboard's backlit function but never knew when I purchased it. My Thinkpad Edge has the following specs, Core i5/2410MWindows 7 Pro 64 bit Thank you and looking for any of your valuable feedback.

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 Battery dead after firmware update 1.13

I recently purchased a pre-configured ThinkPad Edge E420 Core i3 -- equipped with Lenovo's most-basic WiFi card. Now, I need to add dual 2.4 / 5.0 GHz capability to this E420. Will the retail version of Intel Centrino-N 6250 (part # 622ANXHMW) be recognized by the ThinkPad BIOS & supported natively thru Lenovo driver updates, same as the Lenovo version of this part -- FRU 60Y3195? (My reason for asking? The Lenovo "FRU" part is ~ 6x more expensive than the widely-available Centrino-N 6250 retail version -- Gasp!) Also, I don't intend to use the 6250 WiMAX (802.16e) feature, so I don't want the card wasting my bandwidth & my patience, by discovering & reporting on available WiMAX access points... Will that feature stay dormant & out of the way, unless or until I elect to use it in the future? I hope that I'm being needlessly cautious, but I was spooked by seeing numerous references stating that the similar Intel Centrino-N 6200/6205 are NOT compatible with Lenovo ThinkPads... My sincere TIA to all who choose to respond!

Hi deltaman and welcome to the forums,

Lenovo has a whitelist in the bios that will produce an error that you can't boot past if you put a non-Lenovo branded card in there.  The reason for the whitelist is that the card is matched to the antenna in order to be compliant with FCC regulations regarding interference.  The only way around the whitelist is to modify the bios to accept the non-Lenovo card, but on a machine as new as yours, there hasn't been one made yet. So, you would be stuck with buying the Lenovo-branded card.

As far as disabling the WiMAX feature, I'm sure there's a way to do it, I've just never had of those cards so I'm just not sure how.  Maybe someone who does will chime in here.

Hi, I just got a thinkpad edge e420 and I have noticed a high frequency/high pitch noise as well as a whirring sort of noise (sometimes, might just be hard drive tho). It is quite soft and I can only really hear it when I am in my bed at night with the laptop. It can get quite annoying. I have heard of similar problems like this when I did a search but no clear solution.  Where exactly is the noise coming from?Is there a solution? Is this normal for all e420 or is it just a very common problem that may require warranty service?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 High Frequency/High Pitch Noise

it is not really a problem, there is no real solution to this whining problem, as per the discussion we had on whirlpool.

Hey all, My wife's laptop, e420, has been having issues for the last 3-4 months. It started where she would shut the laptop and it would not go to sleep, the screen would just be black. You would have to hit the power button to wake up. A new issue is that we get the dreaded blue screen. The error shows that there is a problem power management when shutting the laptop. I have tried to debug the dump file with little help and I have updated all the drivers. I have a feeling the power management drivers became corrupt on an update but not sure. Any thoughts? I have updated the bios as well. Thanks!

Hey all,  So I've had the Edge 14 for about a month now. I am really happy with it for the most part, but the display does this weird thing. Every once in a while, doesn't matter if it's on battery or on AC, the brightness is lowered (even though the brighness indicaor shows max brightness) and the colors wash out and start looking really weird. It sometimes solves this on it's own or it can be cured by lowereing and increasing brightness again. I can' figure out how or why this is happening. Has anybody else faced this? Is there a solution ? Thanks all !!

Hi Dre,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that there is no display in your Lenovo ThinkPad E40.

I would like to thank you for all the efforts you have done to fix the issue on your own.

Try removing the memory, start the system and check if you hear beep sounds. If there is no beep sound, probably it?s a system board issue.

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,

I recently started experiencing a severe graphical glitch on the left of the laptops screen. It looks like a Big white rectangle with red on the bottom edge and green lines on the left and right sides.I believe it to be a screen hardware issues. Since when I tap on the back side lightly, it moves and causes the lines to flicker. My laptop I believe is still under warranty and I think Lenovo should fix it.What do you guys think? Also, my laptop also heats up really hot sometimes even under light to moderate use. Is that just part of a laptop growing old? Or might it just need to be opened up and dusted? Can you even do that with an Edge, and still put it back together?

Answer:Display Issue with my Thinkpad Edge 13 (I believe)

Sonic132,

Welcome to the forum - sounds like you have a few issues here...

1) Running warmer... Check power manager to be sure latest version is installed - sometimes things get corrupted.  You can also blow out the fan with the system off.   Ideally, fan and heatsinks are cleaned with the system opened up, but as you are under warranty, let's hold off on that.

2) Video issues.   Tell us a bit more if you can...

If you move the lid back and forth, does this change?  If so, it is likely an issue with the display cable.  The cable could be damaged / pinched, or it might not be making a good connection.

If you hook up an external display, does the same image result on the external display?  If no, then back to the LCD internal cable, or less likely, an issue with the LCD itself.   If on the other hand, the image defects exist on the external display same as the internal, then likely it is:

a) Corrupt video drivers - uninstall / reinstall the newest ones from the support site
b) memory - power down the system and open the memory compartment - remove and reseat the memory module(s)
c) Run diagnostics (Thinkvantage Toolbox) and run the video tests.  If it fails, definitely call support.

If you have been through all of the above and are still stuck, give support a call since you are under warranty.

Best regards,

Mark

My Thinkpad was working fine last night, and I shut it down as normal with no problems. This morning I went to turn it on, the power light and fan came on etc but there is no display, not a backlit black screen or anything just completely dead. I tried different memory, hard drive in it and still nothing. I also tried plugging into another monitor to see if it was a problem with the screen but no luck.I have tried many times to turn it on, one of the times I turned it on and it loaded up as normal, then I shut it down and now it won't turn on again. The fan seems to be running extremely loudly when it turns on as well. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Thanks

Answer:Thinkpad Edge powers up but no display

Hi, joffyy

To me, it sounds like the machine is having severe difficulties in rendering video, which would explain why neither the LCD nor the external monitor are showing anything, except for that one time. If I had to make a guess, I would think that the video card or the systemboard is to blame, so one of those would need to be replaced. If your Edge machine only has an integrated graphics card, then it would be the systemboard, which is a good place to start. If possible, I would contact Lenovo at 08705-500-900 and discussing the issue with them.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, my supervisor attempted to hook his ThinkPad Edge laptop up to an external monitor via a VGA cable to utilize dual screens. I helped him extend the monitor space instead of simply mirroring the laptop monitor. Moments later, he disconnected the VGA cable from the laptop for some reason and was unable to get the external monitor recognized again. By the time I got back to the laptop, he noted that he had attempted to press various Fn button shortcuts, and now there is no display whatsoever except for the mouse icon. When loading, the Lenovo logo appears and the Windows startup sound plays afterwards, but there is no display. Only a black screen, and yet the mouse is visible and moving as it should. I attempted to connect the external monitor, but it does not seem to be recognizing this either. I booted the laptop in Safe Mode and it appeared fine, so I went into the Control Panel and confirmed that only the laptop monitor was recognized. Upon restarting, we were met with the same black screen. It should be noted that when moving the mouse around on the black screen display, the mouse hits the left edge of the laptop screen and recognizes it as a boundary, but will continue to go past the right edge of the monitor. This leads me to believe that it is still associating another display as the default, but I cannot seem to figure out how to reset the display so that the laptop monitor itself is the one and only source. Hi - I am experiencing a few difficulties with the display of my ThinkPad Edge 11 (ID: 03282NB). One of them is that sometimes (I don't know what triggers that) the display becomes progressively very "white" (I don't know how to describe that better), and then returns to normal after maybe 10 seconds. The occurrence seems random to me, and it is very annoying since the screen becomes unreadable (extremely bright / white). I don't know if this is related to power management or something else. I have upgraded to the latest drivers / software through Lenovo and Microsoft. Thank you very much in advance for your help. - Julien

I could order the same part from Lenovo, but I find the screen (15.6", WXGA HD) that came with the computer less than satisfactory at reproducing colours (photo editing). Are there quality third-party options, or can I use a better display from another ThinkPad (I can't find any compatibility info)? I am looking at improving sharpness and colour replication first, and not necessarily at increasing pixel resolution.

I have never seen anything like this before. What do you guys think? How can I deal with it?

Thanks a lot.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge e420s display problem

does it exist when you start the laptop? if it does then it is a hardware problem and you would need warranty service on it.

Find out whether you can return it. If you can, return it and get a notebook with an anti-glare/mat display. Lenovo offers numerous models with anti-glare/mat displays.

Hi,I have been facing a problem with Thinkpad Edge 14 0578bpq resolution since the last couple of hours.I had to force restart my  pc because it was not going into the task manager. On restarting i found the resolution of the pc which was 1366*768 has now become 1280*800 and the display is being cut from the bottom edge and a black band on the top as if the display has shifted down.Similarly there is a large black band on the right.Tried restoring my pc,reinstalling the intel display drivers but to no avail. Also I have noticed that in the bios too the display is cut from the bottom. Is this an issue that can be addressed easily or is it a hadware issue for which I have to call the service centre? Thanks in advance

Hi there! Can someone please verify that model NWW27SC comes with anti-glare display and NWW23SC comes with glossy display (the other difference is that WHP7 64bit is pre-installed on NWW23SC). I'm sorry but I don't know model numbers (I only know commercial ones). From the information given on official Lenovo pages there are differences, but they are using the same picture for both models and on that picture display is glossy (also according to official pages X120e should be available in Croatia, which never was true, so I can't relay on information given there).  Thanks!

Hi, I have a question about ways how to power off display on Thinkpad Edge E520 (probably Edge in general). I know it can be power off by right clicking on Power manager and select power off display, but I am quite dissatisfied with this solution. Before Thinkpad I had laptop Lenovo from Idea series and I would appreciate if I could have the same option with Thinkpad to power off display by button...Is there any solution for Edge series for that ?  Thanks, Peter

My display drivers are old almost 2 years now. It's not very professional from Lenovo to be so lazy about updating drivers. Someone asked this before, and guy from Lenovo said to him that current drivers are working OK so there is no need for updating them. Well, newer drivers are obviously working better, but Lenovo doesn't care enough I guess.. Will never recommend Lenovo to anyone.. Sorry for mistakes in text, English is my foreign language..

Hi Wale3D_ArshaD,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that you are facing the issue with On Screen Display on your ThinkPad Edge 15.

To resolve this issue you have to install hot key features application.
Please click here to download the application and run the setup.

Note: Make sure Display driver is installed on your system, because hot key feature application requires Display drivers to work on the brightness function keys.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

On a Thinkpad S430 with HD4000 integrated graphics, an external display connected via a HDMI cable is not detected at all when using Windows. The system is fully updated as of the time of posting this message, both via the Lenovo Update tool as well as Windows update. The Intel driver version is 8.15.10.2696. It appears that this is the latest version, since it does not offer an update when I try to auto-update it via Device Manager. NB: I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.4.0 on the same machine, and the external display works perfectly fine with this software configuration. Hence I think that it's very likely that this is a Windows-specific driver issue. Would Lenovo happen to have a driver update in the works? Alternatively, I will be thankful for any suggestions about possible resolution of this problem.

My 1st thinkpad E420, make me disappointed a bit. Just bought it for 3 days ago and found NO function supported for thinklight. Even the icon show on the spacebar but not work. My friends told me its spacebar might be common use with the other model (like a cost saving). I didn't believe them. 'Caz, the Sales & technician didn't tell me before. They just said it could work, NO problem and it's new series. And they also suggested me if something's wrong,i can return within 7days.  I didn't think this case could happen !! After 3 days past, it still didn't work. I was frustated since I couldn't reach any technician guy, also the hot line and I wasted time to search info.for this issue but nothing. Fortunately, today I could reach them (after dial for 3 days), and be told that it really didn't work for this model. This is the standard key to use common with another model i.e.E420s. OMG!! My friends were right !! Why they didn't tell me first !!.........That's it!

Answer:Edge E420 : Why they didn't tell me first !!

hey nothingatall,

Any plans on releaing drivers for ATI VGA and eventually fixing power consumption on windows 8? it would be nice...

Answer:Edge E420 and Windows 8

Hi, sardelich

I am unsure and hence cannot say when Lenovo is planning to release the drivers you are requesting, but the easiest way to stay up to date with driver releases from Lenovo is to subscribe to their RSS feed for driver updates. This will allow you to instantly be notified when new drivers for your system are released.

To set up the RSS feed, you can go here, select the RSS feed reader you wish to use (Google is the default), and select your system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi guys,I'd be very grateful if you could help with the following Thinkpad Edge 13 issues:1. Heating. The fan is blowing hot air from the vent on the left. The bottom left of the keyboard also gets very, very hot. How can I cool it down?2. WiFi. The WiFi adapter turns off after the laptop goes to sleep. I think have to run the troubleshoot to restore it again. Very annoying problem - any ideas on a fix?3. Freezing. This might be related to the heat problem, but since I installed a new hdd, the laptop freezes for about 30 seconds before coming back to life again. It seems especially the case when watching video.4. Video. When watching video on VLC, if I jog the laptop only slightly, the video freezes or stutters. I have to keep the laptop perfectly still to avoid this. Is that normal?Any help with this would be much appreciated! Thanks kindly.

So I know the whole deal that the edge 420s is slimmer and lighter and stuff, but I also noticed that there are no actual buttons on the bottom of the touchpad. There are buttons at the top to go with the Trackpoint stick,  but unlike the e420 they got rid of both sets of buttons. Does anyone know how clicking works for the touchpad on the 420s? Is it just a tap to click? (assuming you aren't awkwardly using the buttons on top of the pad) Or, does the whole touchpad actually press down slightly in a similar fashion to the Macbook? Much thanks for any clarification

Answer:edge e420/e420s touchpad...

The whole touchpad presses down slightly (similar to the Macbook). Pressing to click with two fingers will give you a right-click. While I haven't used Windows with mine, I assume the touchpad can be configured to handle tap-to-click, numerous scrolling options, and possibly even to change the press to click behaviours. In addition (assuming you're not running linux and getting hit by randomly functioning trackpoint issue), the three buttons above the touchpad can also be used for clicking.

I'm having some issues with noise from my new Edge E420 laptop. So far everything's running smoothly, no slowdown or performance issues, but the noise coming out of the machine is bothersome. It happens when I'm doing a task, such as browsing the internet, but it also happens when the computer is sitting idle. I don't know what precisely is making the noise, but I suspect it's either the CPU or hard drive. The fan does make slight noise that is sort of a constant whir, but this other noise is intermittent (although frequent) and sounds like the typical computer "thinking/processing" noise but not high pitched. I had some earlier troubles with noise that was high pitched, which I rectified by turning off the CPU power management in the BIOS utility. Anyone else experience this noise issue before? If it was only every once in a while I could live with it, but the noise is constant. It's really driving me nuts!

Answer:Noise issues with Edge E420

hey candide, could you use this hardware maintenance manual >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM006567and open your unit and clean the interior, especially the fan area and the vent near it. btw, is your E420's bios at version 1.16/1.07? if it isn't, do go to http://support.lenovo.com and update.

Big file WMI cdrivebackup.wim under Q:Lenova Recovery 9,109,722 KB Is this the problem with no memory left and if so can I delete

Answer:No Memory Lenovo Edge E420

If you have no space available then make some. The Q partition has the factory install data, and you should back it up so you can go back to factory settings should anything happen to your computer. After that, you can delete it.Your computer should include a backup utility for that, look around the lenovo programs. Back it up in 1 CD and 4 DVDs and then you can delete it if you want to recover those ~13gb.The space will only be released, and not reallocated to any partition though, so you're gonna have to partition it yourself. If you aren't computer savvy just make some room in your c drive. Delete old programs, big files you downloaded and don't need, etc.

Dear Lenovo, I have started using ThinkPad Edge E440's and E540's in my company last year (June 2014) and have now been experiencing several horrible issues: 1. The default Windows 7 OS that came with the laptop gets corrupted when you install updates from Microsoft. This will hang after the initial restart and then will never boot again to windows not to mention 4 BSOD's before it gets totally corrupted, to a point that not even safe mode can boot into. if I do not update the OS from MS Updates, it will be working, but dead slow. I have 2 i7 8GB 1TB configuration and honest to goodness opinion my Core2Quad beats them hands down in performance.  2. The issue above will then have to be reformatted hence i have no recovery disks of Windows 7 so i have to use the Windows 8.1 recovery discs. which is a terrible OS and is not being used in our corporate setup. so then i have to use one of our licenses and this wastes our licenses because we originally ordered these laptops with windows 7. but then the same issue occurs with it hanging constantly and not able to connect to the wifi and BSOD's all around 3. After i have installed and updated windows 8.1, i will then update the drivers, and then will have to update the BIOS to 2.18 and then Wi-Fi will not work with the drivers that are found from your support site. you can only use WiFi again if you download the drivers from Intel or Realtek. 4. Suddenly my USB ports started disconnecting and reconnectin... Read more

I was looking into buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. I initially preferred E530 (model# 62724GU) over the idepads (such as model P500) with better configurations for over a hundred and fifty dollars less only because it had thinkpad in its name.  However, I am seeing so many complaints (such as fan issues, battery drain) for E530, I am not sure if bought one it would not have defects. Has anyone got a defect free E530? What is the average battery drain time on both E530 and P500 on moderate to heavy load?

On booting, the laptop screen will "flash" black a couple times, but doesn't display anything. It started a couple of days ago. . . on resume from sleep, the screen would delay in displaying, then you would see a whole bunch of scan lines and "rolling" vertical video, then it would be fine. The last time, however, it never came back. Ideas? Jim

Hello! I hope you can help me. I have some problems with my Lenovo e125 thinkpad. My BIOS version is the latest (1.17) I've set the power button to sleep, and disabled the lid closing action. But sometimes yes. The another (and more annoying) problem is, somethimes when I push the power button (what has set to sleep), the notebook competely restarts.
