Need driver for my CDRW/DVDRW drive, Thinkpad E545 Windows 7 Pro cannot find the drive at all

Question: Need driver for my CDRW/DVDRW drive, Thinkpad E545 Windows 7 Pro cannot find the drive at all

Hey everyone! I've had my Thinkpad Edge E545 with Windows 7 Pro for well over a year, maybe a year and a half, but it stopped recognizing my CDRW/DVDRW drive a month or so ago. I thought maybe it was a glitch that would work itself out with a restart, and I forgot about it until yesterday when I needed it again. The drive does not even show up in device manager at all. When I put a CD in, it spins for a few seconds, but it doesn't register with the computer, never shows up in My Computer or in Device Manager. I'd love to at least see the drive with a yellow exclamation point! Seaching the support section of this site, I could not find a driver for it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can get one, or have some other solution that I may be able to try? I'd appreciate any help I can get! Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Need driver for my CDRW/DVDRW drive, Thinkpad E545 Windows 7 Pro cannot find the drive at all

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys, I've got a bit of a problem, I have a Sony DVD-RW/ CD-RW drive and although I can burn CDs fine, I can't burn DVDs. When I put in a blank DVD it recognizes it but when I try to click and drag it gives an error message like, "drive not ready" or something about not being able to access it. Any suggestions? I want to be able to burn data DVDs and videos.

Answer:DVDRW/CDRW drive troubles

If the DVD you are trying to use isnt on Sony's list of compatible media, then it might be an incompatible disc. If it is on the list, then your drive's lens might be dirty or the drive is starting to die.

What's the best way to hook up a dvd, cdrw, dvdrw drive connection?
My hard drive will be primary master.

Answer:dvd, cdrw, dvdrw drive connection

You want to have the DVDRW as the Master on the secondary IDE, then the CDRW as the slave on the secondary. Then the DVD on the primary IDE as slave.

I own a Satellite A30-303 with a optical drive MAT****A UJ811 (CDRW-DVDRW).
Everything worked just fine until last week the drive stopped reading any DVD. A error message saying that there is some problem with E/S is displayed. CDs are recognized with no problems though.
I tried to find updated drivers for the DVD driver but I couldn't get any.
Please does anyone have an idea of what that might be and how to solve it??
Thank you!!

Answer:Satellite A30 CDRW-DVDRW (Mat****a) drive can't recognize any dvd

Most likely to have a failed drive, especially if it has just stopped reading the media. There is the possibilty of a virus or corrupt software and the only way of telling this is to do a product recovery. But be aware all data is lost if one is done as you need to back up all important software and there could the chance it wont fix the problem. Only real way to find out is take it to a Toshiba Repair agent and get them to test the drive/machine. Personall I think the drive is faulty.

Good luck

Guys, a real basic question. I am looking at buying a new machine and have a choice of DVDRW/CDRW or DVDRW. The CD write and read speed (16 and 24) appears alot quicker than the DVD write and read speed (4 and 8). Is this a true comparison i.e. the CD reads 4 times quicker than the DVD or am I missing something. Will be using the laptop for a lot of CD reading for itunes and this is an important factor in my decision. All guidance appreciated. Cheers.

On a side note anyone know what the differance is between these two graphics chipsets?? i.e. which is better or are they pretty much the same

Gaphics chipset - Intel 855GM NVIDIA Ge Force FX go 5200
Mem Size - 64mb 64mb
Mem type - Shared Dedicated

Answer:DVDRW/CDRW 'v' DVDRW Whats the difference between the read and write speeds???

Personally i would opt for the DVDRW/CDRW combo drive as it will give you the most burning options for backing up data/music.
If you are going to have an empty bay i would get a plain old CDR to play music on as they are dirt cheap now.
Reason being is burners run a lot hotter and i only use them strictly for burn projects. They will play your music fine but why subject them to the wear if not needed. After all their not as cheap to replace. My CDR is 54x and about 4 years old and still ticking. I found out the hard way about wearing out a burner.

I have posted a few times on this subject, but have not been able to fix the problem as of yet. I am in the Military and stationed over seas and it seems that every time I post, I have to deploy for a few weeks and the thred just goes unanswered. I am going to try one more time. I have an IBM 566 running Win 98SE. I have upgraded in the past to a larger hard drive and also added a CDRW (CD Writer IDE 8x4x32). My OEM CD Rom is a LITEON CD-Rom LTN485s. My problems started about 2 months ago. I decided to use the fdisk function and do a complete reinstall on the computer. I realized after I had "slicked" the hard drive, that I did not have the disc from the manufacturer with all the drivers on it...uh-oh...So now my A drive, CDRW and my CD-Rom do not work. All have power and are hooked up correctly, the system just does not recognize them. In my device manager, under disk drives, of the three, only Generic NEC floppy is listed. I have yellow ! marks beside primary IDE controller (duel fifo) and secondary IDE controller (duel fifo). I also lost all sound in my computer as well. Anybody that can help would be appreciated. I have my System Model and Circuit Board information if that helps. Thanks in advance.

I just bought a Khypermedia 52x24x52 cdrw drive. It isn't recognized by the BIOS or Windows. Apparently I need a dos driver for it, but when I went to the Khypermedia website the link for the driver actually takes you to a page with firmware. I called the company and got a recording and their mailbox was full. I can't find a driver anywhere on the internet either that's specifically for this drive. Does anyone know where else I can get the dos driver or whatever I need for this thing? Or do I possibly need to update the BIOS or something? I hope someone can help. Thanks.

Answer:Dos driver for cdrw drive?

wooooooooo cd rw drive in 95 that might be tough, especially with a P II!!!
you could try and see if there's one there (you have to sign up but its free)
CD rw drives were originally designed for 98 and then have been made to work for most platforms so i'm told, not sure if this is definitely true but word of mouth...
i'm sure its possible with a bios update and then checking, but good luck!

Computer: Compaq Presario V2110CA Notebook PC (Details Found here:

The computer is pretty old so I no longer have the recovery CD.

Built into the computer is a "DVD/CDRW Drive (GCC-4243N)". I recently had to format the entire hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows XP (Pro, in the case). Upon reinstall into automatically installed a Driver.

When I first put a DVD into the drive it didn't play. It wouldn't even let me see what was on the DVD (properties showed it is 0kb) so I checked the driver in the Device Manager and it had it set as "Sony CD-RW CRX830E" which is the incorrect driver. So I went to the Compaq site (now HP) and downloaded the firmware update, but it won't let me use it.

I tried to update the driver manually but there are no drivers that work with the device. I tried searching for a working driver, but all I get is the same firmware update that doesn't work.

Any ideas? I'm all out of them. I'm trying to contact HP Support, but they aren't being very helpful. :\

Hi I?ve got a dell Vostro 430 with windows 7, it?s about 8 year old, two weeks ago the internal dvdrw drive which I use on a weekly basis suddenly stopped working, it would make noises like it was trying to spin up but never manage it so after deciding it was probably old age I bought an external usb3 portable DVD burner. It does exactly the same thing with one difference, it will play original dvds but shows exact same failiure to spin up with any RW DVD?s both +and -.

It gets stranger. About a year ago I did a clean install of windows on a new hard drive which is what is currently in the pc so thinking it must be a recent driver glitch or something I swapped it out for the old hard drive (which still works fine but was just taking forever to boot hence the clean install on a new hard drive) expecting the dvds to work but they don?t, both burners do exactly the same thing and when I try to click on them in my computer I get ?not responding?

I?ve deleted upper and lower filters in registry but made no difference, I?ve deleted the internal drive from device manager and rebooted to let it reinstall it but made no difference
Has anyone got any suggestions on cause?

I can't find the DVD drive for my Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q705 Gaming Laptop. In the General tab of the (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T50F) property window, the following status was shown:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

I removed and reinstalled the driver for the DVD drive, but the same problem reappears. I gone through the procedure to remove the upper and lower filters in the registry (Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs). I have done everything in that link with no change in the problem. The DVD drive is a Hitachi HTS723232L9A360. I went to the Hitachi website, with no results.

I am cash strapped, so I can't afford to use application like "driver doctor" (that scan your pc for problems, then claim to repair the problem for a fee). I consider that a form of deception to download their application. Would like to know where I can find the link for the DVD drive listed above in this post.

Thanks in advance.

I use to have a program called Easy CD Creator, and I swear it had a feature that allowed you to make a virtual hard drive out of a rewritable CDR. Is this possible? I never tried it, but I read about it, and I think that is what it did.

So, for instance, if you formatted the rewritable disc, you could then drag and drop files onto it like a floppy drive.

If anyone has a clue as to what I am trying to say, please inform me.

Answer:Using an external DVDRW Drive like a Hard Drive.

Yes, look it up at Roxio site. I'm sure they explain it better. It must be some sort of a system tray icon app that handles drag-n-drop of files.

But DVDRW is slow, external is even slower. It's best for back-up's. Not installing/running apps on it.

Greetings,I have recently purchased a ThinkPad Edge e545, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have followed all the instructions, upgrading drivers and such. The system seems to work great except for one thing. In Device Manager, I see there is one Unknown Device, which does not appear to match any available driver downloads on the Lenovo support section (I have tried them all). The information for this device is as follows: Device Instance: ACPI\SMB0001\3&2411E6FE&0Hardware ID: ACPI\VEN_SMB&DEV_0001 Goggle searching turns up a mixed-bag of conflicting information, and links to less than reputable driver files which my spider-sense tells me would be best to not install. Help would be appreciated. The device reappears if it is uninstalled.. And I have also tried the SMBus Windows 7 driver, which has no apparent effect. Thanks,~{Ultima}~

I purchased a Lenovo Edge E545 from Amazon.  It didn't come with discs.  Windows update got completely hosed and I couldn't get updates any more.  I tried to use the restore feature but had some problem with it and wound up unable to boot or anything, so I installed Windows 7 from a disc I had (must have been from another PC).  Now it want's the key. What do I do?  The key is nowhere in my box, on the laptop, or in the emails I got.  How do I find my key for this?

Answer:Can't find E545 Windows 7 Product Key

Welcome to the forum.
In some ThinkPads of that era the Microsoft Windows product key was placed in the battery compartment rather than on the bottom of the case. (That was intended to reduce the chance that the printing would degrade from friction as the system was inserted/removed from things like protective sleeves.)
If that doesn't uncover the key there are software utilities like MagicJellyBean that will extract it from Windows. See e.g. this article: How to find your Windows or Office product key

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 that's about 18 months old. Everything has been fine until now. I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 without a problem. However, I now realize the my CD/DVD player is not working properly. I inserted several different DVDs and CD. I can hear the player spinning as if it's trying to read the disc, but when I check File Explorer, the drive has not been recognized (and no CD or DVD starts).  After doing research, I tried most of the suggestions here: but I was unable to try to "fix registry entries" because I couldn't find Upperfilters and LowerFilters listed. Perhaps that suggestion didn't apply since the suggestion said to remove them.  I checked the BIOS to make sure the DVD was enabled.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:replacing a cdrw drive with a dvd-rom/cdrw drive

Basically, all you do is unscrew and unplug the CD-RW and plug in the DVD-ROM. Its as easy as that. Just make sure you plug the IDE cable into the back of it in the right direction, and also the power cable.

Hi, I recently got a refurbished T430 and well, I just love it and want to invest in an upgrade hard drive, 1TB 7200 rpm I read through the specs here but other than: 320 GB, 7200 rpm, 7mm high, SATA 3.0Gb/s500 GB, 7200 rpm, 7mm or 9.5mm high SATA 3.0Gb/s1 TB, 5400rpm, 9.5mm high SATA 3.0Gb/sthere really isn't much to go by when buying a new hard drive. (totall rookie at this, so please be kind) Do all otc hard drives on the market today fit my machine? I read discussions about the bay in my machine only fitting the 7mm HDs and that 9.5 is a stretch and could harm the connection with the mother board. Can you link me to some schematic page? I'm looking for part numbers, that would help. Here are a few HDs I am considering, how can I tell if they will fit ok? Feedback is appreciated. I can watch vids on gootube on how to swap out, that part is easy. Currently dual boot win 7 pro and ubuntu 14.04 and I pretty much mukked up the 320 hd with partitions before I knew any better. Nothing on the hd is special, I could just as well do a clean install or restore the backups. Which do you recommend? Would I be replacing the hd in the 9.5mm slot? PS, do any of the hybrid drives work in the T430? Thanks!

I have upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 to Windows 10 recently and since then I have been having increasing problems to connect to WiFi. It is not a problem with the WiFi itself, since I can connect with my phone and tablet without any problems and my husband has not had any problems with his laptop either. It started with just having to try to connect a couple of times (clicking disconnect and then connect again) in the beginning. Then it took restarting the computer. And now I can't connect anymore no matter how often I try or whatever I try. Initially I got an error message regarding the IP address when using the troubleshoot, but now it just can't find the problem. I have read that it could be a problem with the WiFi driver, which may need an update for Windows 10. The driver listed is Realtek RTL8188E LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have not been able to find this driver or any update for it on the Realtek website. I have not been able to find anything on the Lenovo or Windows website, or anywhere else for that matter, either. Hello Everyone,

The problem that I am having is that my bios acknowledges the cdrw drive, but when I open windows explorer it lists it as only a cd rom drive. I have installed plexwriter atapi (plextor) and also nero, and when scanning my system I get a message no cd writer installed.

I have ms windows 98 4.10.1998, with authentic amd k6(tm) 3d processor, 128 mb ram on a asus mobo. I have tried the cdrw on ide1 as slave and on ide2 as master and win still will not acknowlege. I have autodetect on in my setup, and upon bootup it detects the cdrw.

Any suggestions on how I might get windows to acknowledge my cdrw? It is a plexwriter 12/10/32A.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dvd/CDRW?DVDRW set up

personally, I would sell all three drivers and get a new and faster DVD writer to do everythingcopy DVD on the fly, you will possibilly do it once every a few moons. Why (1) commericial DVD movies cannot be copied without the use of illegal software (2) even you get softwrae working, it still cannot copy becuase movie DVD hold 8.5Gb and your DVD writer may only write 4.7GB (3) even your DVD writer is dual-layer which can write 8.5Gb, the blanks cost over 4 one drive for everything, less noise, less heat and less enerygy

Question: DVDRW and CDRW

Have both in my PC . Question is do they make a special disc for the DVDRW and if so can I use the same kind in a CDRW ?

Answer:DVDRW and CDRW

Most of the DVD burners can use DVD-R or DVD+R media. I stick with the DVD-R type so my 4 year old DVD player will run them. They can also burn CD-R and CD-RW media. Check your manual for limitations.

DVD-RW, DVD+RW and CD-RW media can be erased and written again, but the cost of the media can be high.

Many newer CD burners will read DVD disks. You will see the DVD-ROM logo on them. A CD-RW drive will burn a CD at a slightly faster speed than a combo drive, but it's probably not a huge difference.

The Lightscribe feature is nice, but the cost of Lightscribe media is pretty steep. I use a Sharpie to label my media, although some on here might quibble on that one.

You may notice problems if you have 2 high-speed optical drives in your system. Some brands of DVD burners don't play well with others, especially CD-RW drives in the 40x and up range.

If you burn a CD or DVD and the disk cannot be read, use a slower burn speed. I have a second system with a 12x CD drive in it. It could not properly read a CD I burned at 40x, but liked the one I did at 8x.

Well, I've never seen a DVD-RW that couldn't burn CD's as well, so I would have to assume that you most likely can.

Hey, could anyone suggest a solution?

Symptoms are as follows:

CDRW starts to write, but the green led on the front turns red after two minutes.
Then the DVD drive packs in, WMP 10 recognises the Album name, but refuses to play it. No error messages come up.

I figured its not the ide cable because it's registering the CD is there.

Also, about two months ago my ps2 ports stopped working on my motherboard, I now use a usb keyboard and mouse.

Also, my PSU died a month after that, which I replaced hassle free.

My CDRW is a Philips 5200 and my DVD drive is an ASUS

Any ideas?

Yours gratefully, Mike

Answer:CDRW drive and DVD drive have stopped working!

try uninstalling them and rebooting

if you are on win XP do this.

Mycomputer> properties > hardware > device manager > DVD/CD Rom drives > right click on the drives uninstall them and reboot.

Once the pc has rebooted it will reinstall the drivers and see how u go from there.

I have recently had to reinstall Windows XP to fix some problems. When I am trying to burn a CD using my burning software, I cannot choose my Sony Recorder as the recording device. There are no CD Recording devices listed. When I go into device manager, the Sony CDR/RW drive has the normal CD ROM driver. So all it can do is read cds. How do I make Windows realize that it is a CD Recorder not a CD ROM?

Answer:XP thinks CDRW drive is a CDROM drive

This is normal behaviour in XP. The OS has its own CD burning software integrated as a shell extension right within the operating system. It will always show your CD-R or RW with a CD icon.

To copy files to a CD simply select them in Explorer, then right click them and choose "send to" from the popup menu. Choose your CD-RW drive letter from the list and a little balloon will popup from a new icon that appears in the system tray. Click on that and it will show you the files that you have queued for burning. You can add multiple files to the queue from different folders (including on other Cds in the drive) before starting the burn process.

If your CD-RW shows up in the "send to" menu it proves that XP has correctly identified it as a CD-RW drive.

Once you have created the queue, click the balloon and choose burn these files to CD from the menu on the left. If you change your mind click the "delete temporary files" button to unqueue items.

You can install third party burning software if you want to, but the icon for the drive still won't change. What third party software are you using? Is it older than the drive itself, as it may not recognise the drive as a CD-RW if that's the case. Try burning a CD with the XP burner and see how you get on. If it works from within XP it may well be your 3rd party software that is to blame.

Is it possible to turn a CD burner into a DVD burner with an upgrade program? I have a Sony laptop with a Matshita UJDA730 DVD/CDRW combination. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Upgrade CDRW to DVDRW

No, you'll have to buy a new DVD burner, they're different technologies that can't be modified with a firmware upgrade.

Recently a problem started with my CDRW drive and appears to happen to my DVD-rom drive and my brand new DVD writer drive.

Basically it started out that after putting several CDs in the CDRW for various tasks like erasing RW discs, burning discs, or ripping MP3s or whatever else, the PC would act as if there was no CD in the drive even though there is one in it. Restarting the PC with the CD still in the drive and all is normal. Until several more CDs go into the drive and then it happens again. This has gotten to the point now that any time I change just one CD in it the PC has to be rebooted to correct it. And now the DVD-rom drive is at the early stage of what is going on with the CDRW drive. The DVD writer drive has only done this once out of like tons so far. I can't seem to track any info at all down as to why this happens and why now when forever the CDRW and DVD drive functioned flawlessly.

Answer:CDRW, DVDRW and DVD-rom problem

Check the Event Viewer for related errors (run eventvwr.msc)

Typically these would be Atapi or Disk errors.

Also open the Device Manager (devmgmt.msc) and look under IDE ATA/ATAP for the channel on which these devices are installed. Probably the secondary.

Look at the Advanced tab.

You want to see Ultra DMA Mode 2 at a minimum for the "current transfer mode".

If it is less than that, select the driver tab, uninstall it and reboot -- then check again.

If nothing here appears relevant, I would suspect the issue lies with some burning or related software for the devices.

I have an M-tech Laptop with a Toshiba SD-R6472 DVDRW and I can no longer play CD-Rs and Cds through the computer, but I CAN play DVDs through Intermedia WinDVD player. Windows will not autostart any Cds or CD-Roms, nor will it recognize that there is even any media in there. I have reinstalled the drivers, run troubleshooter, and also tried to play CDrs through a second installation that I have on another partition - no dice. The device manager says that the CD-Rom is working properly. This is wierd...If the Toshiba DVDRW were broken, I couldn't play any DVDs -which I can, yet I cannot get any XP to recognize the disk with other media. ANY help would be Greatly appreciated!

I have owned this particular unit for a year now, and this is the first bit of trouble. I burned one CD this evening, and now the drive won't recognize any CD's. It recognizes DVD's just fine. My configuration is as follows
Cisnet PC
AMD Athlon 64 X Dual Core 3800+
200 GD Sata Drive
Liteon DVD/CD Burner
Win XP Media Centre Service Pack 2
Nero Start Smart software

I think it may have something to do with the "head" on the drive, as i am under the impression that DVD's have different "heads" compared to CD's on these drives. any help will be much appreciated.

All 3 or the above will not read data although the device manager says they are working properly. Also have a USB Ext hardrive that can not be read. 3 devices will play music using the windows media player if I point to them.

Have uninstalled the in device manager as well as physicallly removing them , the USB Card and Lan Card. Installed them each one at a time but not luck.

Have a Via KT133/A Chipset with 4 in 1 installed.

On Sandra check under Sys Memory Controller/ Bank0/1-Bank<0 it has a value NoneNoneNoneNone b99999 (2 Squares a 1and a square(small squares not on my keyboard)DIMM 512MB. seemed odd but do not know how to read the values. I will try to switch my Memory chips out.

I tried to run XP setup but did not get far as it surveyed my computer and said there was a problem with my devices. I tried again with the devices disconnected except a hard drive and a cd rom. Still could not get past the error.

Rebooting into normal XP i get a message now "setup cannot load the keyboard layout file KBDUS.DLL and to restart. Upon restart everything working except none of my 4 devices can be written to nor will they read data. The error message with them is "Drive X cannot be accessed or has a blank cd" or it says "improper function"

Any advice or help will be appreciated.

I have recently had to buy basically all new components for a computer which were
Graphics Card

The problem is, is that when I try and burn a CD or DVD with my CDRW or my DVDRW drive(which worked perfectly before in my old PC) they only get to a certain percentage and then stop, however the elapsed time keeps on going so the program doesn't crash. Also depending on the size of the thing you are trying to download depends on the percentage it gets to, so say I burn something really small it may get to 50% and if I burn the same thing again it always gets up to the same percentage. I have tried:
Reinstalling Windows
Different Makes Of Disk
Burning At Different Speeds
Just Plugging In My CDRW And Not My DVDRW drive
Using Different Software

If anyone knows how to fix it could you please tell me

Hi! Day 2 of my Win7 adventures and I'm enjoying the new OS. Few problems that I'm working on currently but the premier one is that both my CDRW (Lite-on 52x) and DVDRW (TDK) in Device Manager are throwing a Code 39. I've included a screenie. The PCI Input Device is likewise but is one of my few problems that I'm not concerned about and still working on. Strangely, both devices were working fine yesterday as I used them both to install some programs. Perhaps not so strangely they ceased working (though I didn't realize it immediately) after I installed Interview's WinDVD software Suite. Reading through these and many other forums I've deduced that its an issue with the cd-rom drivers that program installed and I've removed them, leaving only the Windows generic drivers. Still no happiness.

Reading through these forums I found a post detailing a fix to this sort of problem (Link here) however this did not resolve my problem. In fact it made it worse. Not sure what prompted it exactly but upon reboot Windows said there was an issue and could not load up giving me only two options. First was a system restore (thank god for these things) and just booting into Windows normally. I took the system restore...but am now wondering what would've happened if I traveled down the road less...traveled.

Long story short I intend to try the registry hack one more time and if prompted simply boot into Windows normally. If this does not work then I intend to reinstall Win7 and ... Read more

I know that somebody just below this post is having the same problem, but I think my case is a little different. I just had a post about switching the cases on my system and after I did, everything appears to be going perfect except for the fact that the cd and dvd drivest are not being detected. They will eject, so i know there is power. Also, since the hard drives and rom drives have the same plug, i tried to switch them around. that time the roms were detected but not the hard drives (i hope i didn't lose you) Just in case this makes a difference, the computer detected a floppy drive but I don't have a floppy drive Could somebody please help!?!

And just a quick question. How long does it take for thermal compoud to make a heatsink stick to the processor? I can't set my computer upright because it keeps sliding off.

It's an old question; but one for which I've never encountered a definitive answer. Which e configuration is OPTIMAL (if any) when placing two (CD or DVD Rom) devices together as Master and Slave on the Secondary IDE channel???

In the current instance, with regard to my self-built Athlon-XP 1800+ system, (MSI K7T Turbo2 main board, VIA KT133A Chipset, 266 MHz FSB, 768 MB PC-133 SyncDRAM, 40 GB Maxtor 6L040J2 @ 7200 rpm), the HD is Primary IDE Master with no Slave device. The CDRW is Secondary IDE Master with a DVD-ROM as Secondary Slave. Everything works fine this way and always has . . .

Still, conventional wisdom suggests that pairing two CD and/or DVD type devices on the same IDE channel as Master/Slave) is not optimal and that be placing one as Slave to the HD on the Primary IDE channel is somehow better. I've never paid much attention to this particular admonition because it doesn't seem prudent to saddle the HD to any extent by adding a Slave device (of any kind) on its same channel and cable.

My recent acquisition of a DVD+/-RW drive, however, has caused me to now seriously consider which configuration is truly optimal -- prior to the actual installaton. Of course, easiest installation would be to simply replace the existing DVD-Rom drive with the new DVDRW drive as Secondary Slave inasmuch as intend to remove the DVD-Rom anyway.

Further, I will unquestioningly utilize the CDRW drive far more often for actual writing (lending credence to the no... Read more

Setup: WindowsXP/Pro; Master HD and DVDRW-Master, CDRW-Slave.

These CD drives where working fine until I tried to burn a CD Image to a CD-R with the CDRW-Slave drive, which ended with an error (Roxio Creator - Poped-up automatically). I cancelled the recording, and kept working...

Then I inserted a data CD or Music CDs and Windows said to please "Insert Drive" or "No disc on drive X"... but the disks are in!. I tried several CDs which work fine on my laptop, and so do my music CDs. Both CD and DVD drives read DVD ok, but not Data or music CDs. I checked through BIOS setup (I don't know why, I guess is like poping up your car hood and have no idea what you're looking for, but it feels like you're doing something...) but everything looks ok. Anyone has any idea?... Thanks in advance for any tips...

Answer:CDRW and DVDRW do not recognize CDs but OK with DVDs

Get into Control Panel, Device Manager, IDE/ATAPI Controller, Primary and Secondary IDE channels, properties, advanced. Check to see what the DMA settings are. They should be set to DMA 5. If they are, remove the IDE Controllers in the Device Manager and restart your system. The IDE controllers will be automatically reinstalled after start up...

It is not likely that both burners are bad at the same time.

I have a problem with an existing Lite-On CD-RW drive and new Toshiba DVD-RW drive. Seems as if the IDE cable Slave position is not being recognized. Originally, I had the CD-RW jumpered as the master, and it was set and the far end of the IDE ribbon cable. My old Asus CD-ROM drive was slave, and was at the middle position on the IDE ribbon cable. It has been removed from the system, it stopped working a long time ago (or the IDE cable Slave position connector failed?).

When I got the DVD-RW drive, I jumpered it as the Slave and placed it on the middle IDE connector. I checked the BIOS, and the Master/Slave detect settings were on Auto, so I left them alone as they were. I booted up in XP Home Edition, XP saw both drives as New Hardware with the little balloon messages. But when I went to My Computer, only the CD-RW drive was shown (Master IDE cable position and jumpered as Master), with no drive icon at all for the DVD-RW in the Slave cable/jumper position. I ran the Add Hardware wizard, could not find the drive. Device Manager shows only the CD-RW drive, no conflict warnings.

I then tried reversing things. I put the CD-RW on the middle Slave IDE cable position and jumpered it as Slave, and the DVD-RW in the Master cable position, and jumpered it as Master. On startup XP sees both drives, but now only the DVD-RW icon is shown, neither the Add Hardware Wizard or Device Manager see the other drive.

As a last resort, I set BOTH drives' jumpers on Cable Select,... Read more

Hi People

Just got a new PC and would like to know what are the best burning applications, I got a P4 2.8GHz Last week as a gift from my ex-girlfriend which was quiet a surprise, and today I finally got my 1500/256 ADSL connection (Using a speedtouch 530 modem) and would like to know what tools for a fresh windows XP Pro install you recommend for my Copying, backing up, creating DVDs and CDs?
I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4082B Drive (DVDRW) and to be honest I cant find the speed of the blasted thing! I think its 4x DVD-W.

The software I am looking for recommendations on are for doing the following tasks:

1) Backing up DVD Movies then burning duplicates of the original (So my originals always stay in tip top shape!)
2) Creating DVDs with just data, aka like 4GB of my recent downloads for instance?
3) Creating Audio CD's
4) Creating MP3 CD's
5) Creating DATA CD's

I snatched the latest Nero tonight, and DVD Decrypter (Which I tryed out, I copied my NEMO movie, but it was much larger than 4.7GB, so crap knows how I am meant to put it back onto a DVD Disc!)

But surely there is others out there that work better than others in diffrent ways? also just a last and maybe 'dense' question, but do I need to install or should I install an ASPI layed for the burner just in windows itself? I noticed the only one I have on my system is nero's!

Kindest Regards,

David Giles

Answer:Recommendation: CDRW/DVDRW Software!

ok, to copy it to your hard drive, you will need some sort of DVD ripping software.

For the rest, I recommend Drag'n Drop CD+DVD, it is easy to use and copies or burns fast. I haven't tested it burning DVD's though, because I don't have a DVD burner.

When I try to put files on a DVD rw or CD rw disk which I've just erased so that it is clean, no problem. The Nero software says I have to burn it or the Windows CD burning wizard comes on if I just add the files without using Nero. In either case after I either burn the RW disk through Nero or Windows and then try to add another file to the RW it says I must erase the previous files (Nero) or the Disk is full (Windows Burning Wizard). I've just bought a new NEC ND-6650A and fitted it in my Toshiba Satellite 5000-204. It fits fine, despite the bevel had to be cutted in a corner, but everything else fits perfectly.

Before I bought it, I called Toshiba and they said it will be compatible, I would only need to update the BIOS. I've updated the bios (I have version 1.80), but the laptop does not recognise the drive!

I've tried to access the BIOS, by pressing Esc while booting, but after that a message appears saying: "Press F1 for default setting" and no more options are available. How can I access the BIOS settings?

When it boots, the DVD drive turns on the led, so I guess is not a problem with the drive itself.

Any suggestions? I'm running out of ideas.

Answer:Replace DVD/CDRW by DVDRW on Satellite 5000-204?

i think also that there is no problem with the new DVD drive.

Are you shure, that you have taken the right Bios Version? I saw, that there are two different - one, Version 1.40 for Machines with Geforce 4 Go VGA board and V1.80. May be you need the first Bios Version.

You can enter the Bios by pressing ESC key? If you press F1 key in the Bios there are no more options to see in the Bios?? If so, that is quite strange.

I would recommend to reflash the Bios (There are also Windows Bios Updates, please take this one's).
If the problem persits furthermore, you should bring the machine to your local ASP.

I'll get right to the point. I got 2 hard drives (one is serial ata) The other is IDE standard. One DVD-RW, one DVD-Rom, and one cdrw. I would like to know how to set each of em up. As in which should be put primary or slave, to get the most efficient burning and playing games. I keep getting freezes on my cdrom please help.

Answer:2 Hard Drives 1 CDRW 1 DVDRW 1 DVD Which is the best set up? Keep getting CD freezes

I would put the Disk as IDE1 Master the DVD Rom as IDE1 slave, The DVD RW as ide2 master and the CDRW as ide2 slave. This is the best attempt to put the devices likely to be used together on different channels. The only time this falls down is copying from DVD to ide the hard disk, and from CD to the DVD writer (in this case you should cache the CD on disk)

I have power to the CD and DVDRW ROMSs, I can open and close the drawers by pushing the button, upon closing they start up but won't read a CD at all. DVD is set as Master and CDRW as slave.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated. (I suspect I've overlooked something in BIOS)

Answer:SATA Raid 1 set and CDRW/DVDRW vanishes

I dont know about your particular board but I have two Asus P4P800SE boards and in the bios you have to use the "enhanced" setting in order for both sata and PATA (IDE) to be enabled.

I'm mounting a new LG DVD burner on my secondary IDE with my LG CD burner (on the same cable). The DVD burner is replacing my old (well, six months old, but it came with the box) LG DVD ROM. The config was CD burner as Master; DVD ROM as Slave. I'm thinking I'll just set the new DVD burner's jumper to Slave and put it where the DVD ROM was. I know about uninstalling the old software and installing the new that came with the DVD burner (but it's all Nero and both drives are LG, so I expect no probs there), but here's my Q:

Would there be any point in installing the DVD burner as Master and the CD burner as Slave -- any ADVANTAGE to switching?

I'm thinking NOT, but I'm open to being taught by anyone who knows better.

(P4 @ 3 GHz; a Gig of DDR; two WD HDDs on the primary IDE)

Answer:Master/Slave advantage with CDRW and DVDRW?

It dosen't matter, it works fine either way.

I have to reinstall the CD drive HD-DT-ST-GCR-8483B. I have the driver from Dell, but the installer wants the target drive, which is empty. I can find the source allright, but not the target drive. I tried the path c:/dell/drivers/R92814 where it is suppose to go, but it still says no target drive. The is through HL Storage Date.
I have a Dell with Windows XP.
Your advise would be greatly appreciated so I can put in a dvd/cd again.

Answer:Can't find target drive for driver installer

Greetings, Shivara.

Normally, Windows doesn't need a driver for optical drives, unless a firmware or software update is needed to address a specific problem.
Is the drive showing up in BIOS? And, is the drive IDE or SATA?

While working on another computer problem it was detected that my DVD drive was not being recognized by the computer (and is of course not operable). I went to the manufacturer's website (LG) to look for the driver(s), but the only software available for my model was an updated firmware program, but I was unable to install that as well.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the DVD drive, but that had no effect. I do not have a backup disk for my system or data, and after a lengthy period a working on another problem I am very leery about doing any system restore for fear of reinstalling my other recent problems.

Any suggestions on how I can find the appropriate drivers and install them for my DVD? It seems very likely that my current driver(s) have been corrupted somehow, but I have been unable to locate replacements. As you can see from the attachment, my DVD, which is manufactured by LG, is a model HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H42L (or just "GSA-H42L").

Thanks for looking.

Question: OEM DVDRW Drive

Hi, i am wanting to purchase a DVDRW Drive. It is the following - click hereIt says its an OEM version however i cant find a "non" OEM version. Does the same rules apply for this DVDRW that would apply for WINXP Home for example?I am slightly confused about this as i know certain rules apply for OEM. Help would be appriciatedThanks in AdvanceAidan

Answer:OEM DVDRW Drive

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer, the drive will probably come as a bare drive, IE, no cables, software, manual or fancy box. other than that there is usually no difference.

This is a fairly new DVDRW made by LiteOn, model DH20A1H. It reads and writes perfectly, but occasionally it sounds like a jet taking off. I mean it gets REALLY loud. There's no grinding or clicking, no scary sounds. Just a loud whirring hum like a really loud CPU fan might sound like. Should we be worried about the drive maybe dying soon? I know some optical drives are louder than others, but this one is loud enough to be heard from an adjoining room....

Answer:DVDRW drive is L O U D ! !

Hi dlb! i have had this happen on my panasonic DVDRW and on the one at work which is a brand new DELL. Have you tried older discs? I think its something to do with the speed of whatever disc is written in i get it with some discs and also have noticed some make BUZZING sound which again i THINK is where the disc is made offset and spins out off balance maybe cheaper discs not quite sure!

Question: DVDRW Drive

I recently parsed my list of installed programs, and I uninstalled Corel DVD MovieFactory 7 and now my DVD drive doesn't show up in My Computer and Windows tells me in Device Manger that: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"  for the device: "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT30N" I tried updating the driver (no update), uninstalling and rebooting (same issue), and have reseated the drive (only to have Windows tell me the driver didn't install successfully). I know the drive is powered because it gives me the green light when I insert it, and Windows detects it and tries to install the driver. I tried finding the Corel DVD program on Lenovo's site and can't get any of the related things to work because I simply "don't have MovieFactory installed" on my system. I'm assuming this problem stems from me uninstalling the program in the first place, but I can't understand why. I did try and restore my machine, and although the event viewer says there is a restore point made right before this all happened, Windows 7 says I have no restore points but for yesterday (too late) and August 2010 (too early!). Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Where can I find Bluetooth Peripheral Device driver for T420 Thinkpad Windows 7 64bit

Hi Forgany,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
What you can do is uninstall all the Bluetooth application and drivers which you have installed currently and then download and install ThinkVantage system update utility. After the installation restart the system and run the application, this will search for the entire required latest driver for your system.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Answer:Matshita LF5010 Tape Drive Can't Find Driver

I am trying to use an old Mat*[email protected]:a LF5010 tape drive on a new machine. It used to work on a 486 with a SCSI connection. On XP Pro the SCSI card is recognised and it knows what type of drive is attached. But under system devices it has the yellow ? next to it. I have been unable to locate working drivers on the internet for this device. They seem to be quite rare and it is only this part that is stopping it from working. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I've a DVDDual DVD writer, worked perfectly and then I put it in my new machine (DFI LANParty, Athlon 64 3200+) and it reads DVDs perfectly, but Windows only calls it a CD Drive, and it won't pick up blank DVDs. Reads, not writes DVDs. Help lol! Updated firmware etc.

Answer:Very odd DVDRW drive problem...

Windows will not always identify blank media, nor will it always identify a drive properly...when i put a regular CD into my DVD burner Windows ID's that drive as a CDRom. This is common.
Your burning software however should have the capacity to identify blank media properly.
What burner software are you using? ?

Hello, I have an eMachine M6809 laptop and want to replace the non working dvdrw drive with a new one. Can someone please tell me how to do this? I read the manual for the machine, it tells me how to replace everything but that. Thank you.

Answer:Can anyone tell me how to replace my dvdrw drive?

Do you mean how to physically replace the drive? In that case it's pretty easy as far as I know. You remove the screws for the drive (on my laptop there are two on the outside and one under one of the bottom panels of the laptop. The drive should slide out, and then you slide the new drive in, make sure that it's in correctly, connected up, and put the screws back in.

That's what I did with my laptop's DVD drive anyway!

But when I boot up I get a new hardware not found message. It is not shown in the bios, Its listed as unknown device, there is no icon and it is n't in device mgr. When I start the computer the light on the drive lights and I can open and close the drive. Anyone have any Idea what I can do. I have not been able to get any help from Dell.

I recieved a new dvd+-rw dual layer drive, and have been having problems with it. I installed it, windows found the drivers for it and installed the software that came with it, but cant seem to play a cdrom disc in the drive. The drive can only read dvd discs not cd discs. Its the stragnest thing. I have tried physicaly unpluging the drive, removing it through control pannel and installing it again. But I cant do anything to get it to play cd discs. It says it can read and write to cd disics, but I havent been able to. I dont know what else to do.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:DVDRW drive problem

I'd take it back, it sounds more like a problem with the actual drive itself rather than a problem with the installation.

I have this dvd burner and it has worked well for the 6 months I have had it. Suddenly it will no longer burn dvds. When I put a dvd in the drive with video clips on in My Computer it recognises it as a DVD. If I put a blank dvd in My computer recognises it as a CD drive and there is no way I can use it as a DVD Burner. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am running Win XP SP2 with 1 gb ram. I dont think it can be my burning software because the drive goes all wrong as soon as I put the disk in without opening the software. (Intervideo) It happens with CDR and R - & +

Answer:DVDRW IDE1108 [CD-ROM drive

have you tryed unistalling it and the reinstalling the drive take out burning software to then go to device manager and remove it from there reboot pc let windows recognise drive re install drivers for your drive reinstall burning software thats what I would try first.

Ive been having some trouble with my my cd/dvdrw drive on my laptop for the past couple days. First off, none of the auto play works for anything anymore, even tho it is enabled. I inserted a cd today that I wanted to quickly send some pics to, so i went to the pics, right clicked, and the option to send them to the blank cd wasn't there. I went into my computer and clicked on the blank cd and it said that it is not recognized by windows and my need to be formatted, or something like that. I tried numerous different cds, different brands and all, so its not that the cd was an issue. I tried to burn some stuff to a cd using nero and it failed. Overall there's just something fishy going on with my cd drive, and im hoping that someone here can help me out. I'm running vista and all the drivers are updated? Please Help Me:confused

Also I wanted to add, i did install Ultra ISO on my computer and then was using it for awhile but then deleted it. I don't know if this could of somehow caused some of the issues or not. Just a thought tho. Let me know what you guys think.

Question: DVDRW Laptop drive

Hi people. I am having a little problem with a new Laptop DVDRW drive my parents bought me this Christmas. I have an Alienware Area 51-m 7700 series laptop, and my parents bought me a Lite-On DVDRW model number SLW-831S.The problem is thus, when I insert the drive into my laptop, the computer refuses to make it through the POST. Either that or the POST doesn't even start. There is HDD activity for a while. But nothing else. When I take the drive out again, the laptop boots as normal...Does anybody have an idea as to what could be causing this? Many thanks in advace.Dark Lenne

Answer:DVDRW Laptop drive

Dark_Lenne...The problem you may be experiencing could be caused because of improper jumper settings on your new optical drive.Remember...if you have two drives connected to the same IDE channel...only one can be a master and one a slave.More info about your new optical drive can be foud here: of luck!

I recently installed a Lite-On DVDRW combo drive into my system. When I boot up the light blink and drive will open if I push the button but when windows loads I get no response from the drive and it doesn not show in My Computer.

Upon checking my hardware devices it says that a CD/DVD-RW SCSI drive is in my system. I uninstalled this and ran the new hardware wizard which once again found a the same thing but this drive is IDE not SCSI. The LiteOn website only says the default Microsoft driver is what is used.

Answer:Problems With My Dvdrw Drive

Hi shell, welcome to BC.
Looking through your log indicates that your sony drive is not correctly identifying your media (dvd disc). Below are the media types your dvd burner supports.

Read Speed 24x (CD), 8x (DVD)
Write Speed 24x (CD), 8x (DVD+R), 8x (DVD-R), 4x (DVD+R DL), 4x (DVD-R DL)
ReWrite Speed 24x (CD-RW), 8x (DVD+RW), 4x (DVD-RW)

Your log shows the disc type as "OPTODI - SCR016" which is a 16x dvd and shows the burn speed at 1X.
You can see the obvious mis-match there.
First thing you want to try is use a supported media type.
If you still have a problem we'll look into update for the drives firmware.
For that we'll need your laptops make and model number.

The device manager says it is working, the driver is the best for the product, yet when I insert a disc in the E Drive it does not auto start or auto play or do anything. It just asks that I insert a disc in E Drive. I am not capable of doing anything more from a technical standpoint, I'm just a computer user, not savvy to anymore talents. I need help, I have turned  on everything that is necessary to turn on and it still don't work, HELP. What are my options here??????

Answer:dvdrw optical drive does'nt do anything

Hi there , Welcome back to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you are having trouble with the DVD drive on your computer not reading discs. I am happy to help with this. I would suggest that you take a look through this document, if you haven't already: HP PCs - Drive Cannot Read Discs (Windows 10, 8). Try all of it, and see if there is any change.  If you get to the end, and do the recommended hardware tests. let me know the results. If that document does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

Getting a message when using Sonic DVD with an Optorite DVDRW "DVDerr (DVDErr, -2)". The software seems to create the DVD o.k., but when it actually goes to write the disk, I get this error. I am using +R disks, and the drive is supposed to be a combo drive that will take either.

The drive is the slave on the secondary IDE channel, with a DVD ROM as the master.

Any ideas folks?

Thanks in advance!
