ThinkPad Edge E545 - Weak Wireless Connection

Question: ThinkPad Edge E545 - Weak Wireless Connection

Hello, I've recently bought the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 (about a week old) and everything is fine, except the problem is that the wireless download speed & connection is terrible slow. I've done speedtests and resulted in a 1mbps--or barely-- download speed. I updated the drivers, the network adapter, etc. and I have successfully updated the important Windows updates. It's currently Windows 7 and the current network adapter is 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter. There is no problem with the router and no internet speed upgrade is required. I tested connections and done speedtests with other computers and devices on the same connection and their speed is significantly greater than the ThinkPad's. I assure you nothing is wrong with the router or connection area and I have some confidence that it is a hardware problem with the Wireless card. Is there any solution to this problem that does not require me to install another network adapter? I looked around and used Google and tried different methods but they don't seem to work. Thank you in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: ThinkPad Edge E545 - Weak Wireless Connection

I set up an account just to reply to you!...and also I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545, and I want everyone to know what they're doing. Plus, I'm having the same problem. I just downloaded the Broadcom Wireless LAN (Driver here! Remember to choose for either Windows XP, 8, 8.1, or whatever you have!) and I've seen past comments that this has worked for them. I'm about to go try it out, so wish me luck! I hope you haven't returned that laptop you bought! Lenovo is usually such a good brand, from what I hear, and I personally already enjoy the exterior, as I put structure, stability, and damage-resistant against style, which the Edge E545 seems to be more for the accident prone or careful type, but still cool! Good luck!

I have upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 to Windows 10 recently and since then I have been having increasing problems to connect to WiFi. It is not a problem with the WiFi itself, since I can connect with my phone and tablet without any problems and my husband has not had any problems with his laptop either. It started with just having to try to connect a couple of times (clicking disconnect and then connect again) in the beginning. Then it took restarting the computer. And now I can't connect anymore no matter how often I try or whatever I try. Initially I got an error message regarding the IP address when using the troubleshoot, but now it just can't find the problem. I have read that it could be a problem with the WiFi driver, which may need an update for Windows 10. The driver listed is Realtek RTL8188E LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have not been able to find this driver or any update for it on the Realtek website. I have not been able to find anything on the Lenovo or Windows website, or anywhere else for that matter, either. I have read posts by other users who are having similar issues, but I haven't been able to find a solution. Please let me know how I can solve this problem. Thank you.

Answer:WiFi connection problems after upgrade to Windows 10 - Thinkpad Edge E545

Dear KVW,

Welcome in lenovo community,
Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the E545 laptop yet,
So you may go back to the previous windows and wait till lenovo release all the drivers.
Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update,

I have a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545 with download speeds in the 0.15 mbs range. Ethernet gives it about 30 mbps. No, it is not my router--other lenovo laptop wifi connections are perfectly normal for my broadband at 25 mbps. It is windows 8.1 fully updated. I tried to find drivers and downloaded the supposedly correct wireless LAN driver, but no success. Sometimes when started plugged in to battery power or just after being plugged in to ethernet it has high wifi download speed. Also the webcam is not showing picture, which driver should I download? And I am getting an audio driver fail notice. This is a brand new laptop, and Lenovo is quickly losing a loyalty. The only way they would help me on their renowned customer service site is if I paid $99.99. Any info is appreciated.

I was thinking of purchasing this model: http://shop.lenovo.com/ae/en/laptops/thinkpad/edge-series/e545/ I don't need anything fancy just something reliable so this would suit me fine. I mentioned it to a friend who said he bought the E530 and has regretted it ever since due to an issue with the fan. Apparently once the fan starts it doesn't stop. There is a 90-page thread about here: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E530-pulsing-whiny-fan-no-low-load/td-p/797577/pa... I had assumed this would have just been an isolated model problem. What is concerning is that not only have Lenovo not fixed the issue but I have come across similar complaints about the next model, the E540: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-Fan-does-not-stop/td-p/1439657 If the same issue is present in the next model am I wrong to assume it is also present in the E545? Can someone confirm either way plz. I am also considering a Dell Latitude which I will purchase if there is no confirmation the problem has been addressed, but I would prefer to get this model. Regards, Miranda.

I bought a Thinkpad Edge e545 in December, and I recently started monitoring the system temperatures. I noticed that the CPU temp would range anywhere from 85-110 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than past laptops that I have had. Has anyone else noticed unusually high CPU temps on this model? and if so, is there anything that can be done to make it run cooler?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge e545 CPU temperature

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 is overheating.

If your laptop feels hot and shows any of the problems below, chances are its overheating or getting there:

Fan constantly running and making loud whirring noises
Computer struggling to perform basic tasks like opening a new browser window
Mysterious error messages popping up in random programs
Lines on your laptop screen (a sign your video card is overheating)
System freezing or the dreaded BSOD (blue screen of death)
The laptop abruptly shuts down on its own

Optimal operating temperature is 50░ Celsius (122░ Fahrenheit) or below during normal operation of the device. Use dust remover spray to clean out of the laptop's vents. Dust can accumulate in and block the laptop's fan vents. Start using compatible cooling pads which will help in the flow of cool air into the underside vents of the laptop. Keep your working environment or computer room as comfortably cool as possible.

Hope this helps!

Best Regards,
Mithun.

I just received my new E545 and booted it up. I've noticed the CPU is quite hot and so ran some software tests. It is showing the CPU temp around 92 degree C / 196 degrees F. The chip is an AMD A10-5750M. I take it the heat isn't normal. Should I be sending this back to warranty?

OK so when I got this computer shipped to me from school back in November of 2014 it had Win. 7 on it. I had the Windows 8 recovery disc and decided to use that to upgrade the OS. Since that day my mic has been on steriods. I also keep getting the stupid message about the Dolby digital audio drivers not working. I've done everything I could find to to on the interwebs. I had installed the update first and still got it.  Then I uninstalled, reinstalled, and restarted the laptop... still got the message.  Now I can't even use Skype.  PLEASE someone with updated information help! I need this thing to work for school since I have tutoring groups via Skype and such.  Many thanks.

Hi all. I purchased a Edge E545 that came pre loaded with Win7 Pro 64.  I created the Recovery disks for Win7 and used the Win 8 Disks to upgrade the OS.  I have created a new NTFS partition on my hard drive and would like to install Win 7 to that partition.  I have tried to load the recovery disks to install into that partition but I have not been successful; the boot disk won't even load.  I downloaded the Win7 Pro 64 ISO to try and load it into that partition but the computer does not have the COA sticker under the battery like it's supposed to.  At this point I am at a loss and need help. I have recovery disks that won't load at restart or cold boot and I have a perfectly good ISO that i don't have a COA to. Thanks in advance. Ed

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E545 Dual Boot

Hi Ed,

Even if you get the recovery disks to boot, I don't think they'll give you the option to install into a particular partition.  They'll want the whole disk..I'm not 100% on that, maybe 98%...

I guess machines that came with a Win 7 downgrade installed don't have a CoA sticker.  Recovery media won't need that, but won't do what you want.

You can try using Microsoft's (really strange) method for activating a Win 7 downgrade install: Understanding downgrade rights

Basically (as I understand it) you use an already-in-use Win 7 key to install, let the activation fail, and then call MS.

Hey! So I bought my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 about a year and a half ago, and right out of the box this brand new computer was EXTREMELY slow. Internet pages load extremely slow, games play choppy and slow, I cannot watch streams with my computer, and I cannot view HD videos on any platform. This should not be happening with a brand new computer with 16 gigs of ram. I should've submitted it for repair or returned it earlier but I guess I always thought I would find the problem and download a driver or something and the problem would be fixed, but alas, it is still functioning like a laptop from 2001. Any advice or help is much appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 extremely slow

Hi Monger,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Maybe you would want to remove any unnecessary think vantage software?s or other software?s that you don't need.

Additionally try updating the OS and drivers, you can let Windows update do this.

Try disabling all start-up programs, to see if's it's a faulty program. The easiest way is to use the msconfig program. I would also try seeing what program is eating up the resources, ctrl+shift+esc.

I hope the above information helps.

while i am comfy with my laptop, my trusty computer has suffered a crash as of the late resulting in it's refusal to turn on sometimes and inability to start windows eventually i tracked my problem (through Bios Test and scans) to my RAM modules, after some time i figured it out both of my ram modules work fine (i tested them on my other laptops) but it seems the lower memory slot has failed, i managed to fix this simply by moving the 4gb ram module up to the secondary slot and it works again. but my computer is still under warrentey (and before you say anything there were no warnings about the removel of the modules in any documation or in the computer that would void the warrenty) and i was wondering how "failure of RAM slot" to go about fixing the slot as it is oviously a defective part. but it's also attached to the motherboard so... yeah. Hi there, I thought I'd see if I could get help here before opening a repair ticket. I'm experiencing general sluggishness as well as daily freezups and browser crashes with this brand new laptop purchased in November of 2014. Whenever I run either Chrome or Internet Explorer, the names and x's (to close tabs) in the browser tabs suddenly disappear on a daily basis at random times. I have to either reboot or use Task Manager to close the browser and start again when this happens. I also get random freezes, where the entire computer (including the mouse cursor) stops responding, then it starts responding again after 20-30 seconds. Chrome in particular has a curious issue when launched: instead of the normal Chrome window appearing, a very generic, basic, and blank window appears at first, which after three seconds is filled in with the normal Chrome features. On no other computer I own or use does Chrome behave this way, it usually just launches normally from the start. I bought this laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled rather than 8. The only programs I installed are Avast, AOL 9.7, CCleaner, and MalwareBytes (the free version that does not actively run), and I only removed whatever antivirus came preinstalled (was it McAfee?). I also updated Java, Adobe Reader, and Flash. The problems persisted even after I completely uninstalled Avast. I've run virus scans with both Avast and MalwareBytes and found 0 infections. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, even after clean... Read more

I owne a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545. I came running Windows 7. It caught a virus and became unusable. The box came with Windows 8 Pro (but not Windows 7, for some reason). So I did a clean install. But now, the comptuer has no Wifi! It only looks for a hardwired ethernet cord. It's like Windows 8 Pro doesn't know this laptop has a wireless for internet connectivity! I have exhausted my patience and it has been a very frustrating experience. I would really appreciate some sage advice from more technically adept folks on how to solve this problem. Thank you!!!!

I'd install and run ThinkVantage System Update and let it install the appropriate Lenovo drivers for your machine.  See if that fixes things.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 laptop with Win7 pre-installed.

Had it about 5 days, and just tried to boot F8 Safe Mode.

It refuses to acknowledge the F8 key and boot into the Safe Mode menu screen.

According to Microsoft website, F8 is supposed to work in Win7.

Is this a known bug in my hardware?  In Win7?

Or, I hope not, is my Windows installation corrupted?

Answer:F8 Safe Mode does not work, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545

Are you tapping the f8 key repeatedly or just one time . . .

If msconfig is working you could just use it to force safe mode on the next reboot.

Hello,I've been selling and preparing more then 10 identicals laptops in the past months for my customers. Each one of them shows slow and poor performance with their HDDs. After doing all updates and disableing all sofwares from Windows boot allows the laptop to ''breathe'' a little more. But as soon as a software uses the HDD a bit...laptop is giving poor performances. An Acer with a 5400rpm drive and a Pentium B950 still boots 2 times faster. I think the problem comes from HGST HDD drive brand. I've ghosted the original Hard Drive on seagate and western digital 5400rpm Drives and already is behaving much more better. Even better on 7200rpm drives.I'm suggesting all users to invest 90$ into a 120GB SSD drive to unleash this laptop series performances. Even an AMD A6 series can give very good performances. Its just , in my opinion Lenovo's bad choice of part that slow's down a well built and reliable laptop. THey should have invested more into one of the most important part in a computer instead of offering tons of useless Lenovo softwares that most users don't even know what to do with it.

Answer:Lenovo Edge E545 wifi connection drop

Hi Belfazul,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Wifi signal on your ThinkPad Edge E545.

Go to Device manager ? Network adapters ? Right click on Wifi adapter and go to properties, click on Power Management tab and uncheck ?Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power?, and click OK. After closing the entire window check with restarting the system once.

If the issue still persists then boot the system in to ?Safe Mode with networking? and check it once.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I had to do a fresh install of windows 7 professional.  Everything is working aside from the wireless connection.  I've downloaded each wireless driver and still the issue persists.  I can see the connection being broadcasted, upon entering the password to connect I only get "windows was unable to connect to xxx". I can connect to this wireless point from my phone and my other laptop plus no one else in the office is having this issue.  Only on this Thinkpad am I having the problem. If I try to use the Intel PROSet/Wireless Tools diagnostics I get a FAILED-Wireless Hardware is not bound to transport driver.  I've tried everything at this point with no luck.  The LAN works fine of course but I need the Wireless to work.  Thanks

I know I'm not the first person to have this problem, but since none of the solutions I've seen posted in other threads has helped me, here's another one. I've had my E545 for just under two weeks, and in the last few days it's developed an extremely irritating problem.  The laptop drops its wifi connection every half hour or so.  The troubleshooter fixes it every time, but I worry that eventually it won't be able to repair the connection, and it's annoying in any case.   The wireless adapter is the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter; the wired adapter is the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.   Every time the connection drops, the troubleshooter "detects" that the problem was an unplugged network cable, and resets the adapter.  So, for some reason it looks like the laptop keeps trying to use ethernet instead of the perfectly functional wifi.  I've disabled the ethernet adapter in Device Manager, and that seems to keep the connection up longer, but eventually it drops again, and the troubleshooter says the problem is the fact that the wired connection is disabled.  I know it's disabled.   I disabled it so it would stop interfering with the wifi.   What do I have to do to make this stop?  I've installed the recommended drivers, I've disabled the problem adapter.  I've unticked the power-save options in the device properties.  I've followed every scrap o... Solved. I use 'wired' to access a secure intranet, and 'wireless' for general internet use in the office and elsewhere. The wireless connection kept disappearing after I had used the wired connection. Here's a typical scenario: * Boot up with wireless only - no problem.* Plug in wired network cable - it takes over and wireless is turned off, at a deep level.* Unplug wired network cable - no connections! The wireless network does not resume.* Run the Windows network trouibleshooter to discover "wireless capability is turned off".* Pressing Function F9 and clicking the Master and Individual on-off buttons does not help.* Windows network trouibleshooter offers to fix it: accept the offer, and it works again. There has been a lot of discussion about wireless connections on various models of ThinkPad and numerous solutions offered and I've tried most of them. Finally I got to uninstall ThinkVantage Access Connections and now everything works as expected. In fact it is possible to have both networks active at the same time (for example in different browsers). Conclusion: Wired and wireless don't mix well in ThinkVantage Access Connections, so just uninstall it.

Hello everyone, I'm facing a problem with the Thinkpad E130 and the integrated Sierra Wireless MC8355 Gobi 3000 broadband modem. I can't use them with my SIM cards. No connection is established. I'm sure that a modem is integrated since it was specifcally ordered with it and it shows up in the device manager. What I ruled out:- Hardware defect: There is a second Thinkpad E130 with the same setup, where it doesn't work either.- Service provider problem: Tried two SIM cards from two different service providers.- SIM card problem: SIM cards work in mobile 3G router. What I did:- Shut down the notebook- Put a sim card in the slot in the back of the laptop, behind the battery.- Reboot the notebook and start the Thinkvantage Access Connections software.- The sim card usually does get detected and a suitable profile is shown automatically.- Nonethless I created a profile myself. More exactly two profiles for the two service providers. The data for the APN, etc. is gathered either from the internet or from a second software I use.- I try to connect with the profile which is automatically shown and the self-created profiles.- It tries for several minutes but then quits with an error message: 'Unable to connect to network at this time due to out of coverage or Your SIM-card may not be activated. Hello there,I performed clean Windows 7 installation on my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 laptop, I installed all the drivers and Windows updates, however I still have one unknown device in Windows Device Manager that I can't get to work properly. I do not know what the device is and Windows troubleshoot doesn't help at all. I did some googling and checked your Lenovo support and found out that this might be missing Power Management driver but I have installed it and the issue persits. When I go to device's Details tab it lists two Hardware Ids: 1) ACPI\SMB0001, 2)*SMB0001 (screenshot provided).Unknown deviceI have also tried to install AMD SMBUS driver and many others (Synaptics driver) and in the end I got rid of all unkown devices from the Device Manager except this last one. Could you please advise on which driver I might have missed or what steps need to be taken to solve this issue? Thank you very much in advance,Michal

Hey everyone.
I recently got a new Windows computer as my old one just wasn't up to the task of playing newer games, specifically Starcraft 2.

---------------------------------
Computer Specs.
Make/Model: HP Pavilion Elite HPE-250F
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 5770\

Router is a Dlink DIR-825 with firmware up to date.

(if there is any other information you need, tell me...)
------------------------------------

My problem is the wireless connection, it's quite often very weak, and will occasionally cut out on the computer all together.

As far as I know, the problem is with the computer and not the connection to itself (but I could be wrong...), since the older computer had no problem what-so-ever, nor does the iMac sitting right next to it - I have made sure the drivers are up to date, so I don't think that's the issue.

I've tried speedtests, and the iMac is always at the same score, where as the Windows machine varies from 1 to 8 MB per second download speed.

Hope I've provided the necessary information.... if there's anything else, just shout

Hopefully someone can help me get this solved,

Thanks

Hi:From the w7 pc,let's see this:
Wifi test exe. Hint from Johnwill

Download and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspecto from
www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
on the problem machine. Post a screen shot of the main screen here.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button
to upload it here.

Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

There is a problem with wireless connection. it is very difficult to detect the wireless when it is some distance away from the server. unless it is very close to the server connections are unavailable.

Answer:problem with wireless connection. seems too weak to detect

How far is "some distance"? I was in the store once when a customer had the same problem & was asked how far away is the router? He said 11 miles. The employee & I just looked at each other. How do you know when a politician is lying? His mouth is moving.

Hello everyone. This is a two part question.

I have a laptop running Win XP pro and a desktop with linux/win xp home dual boot. My router (D-Link) is on the second floor. For some reason, my desktop gets a very crappy wireless signal. I have a US Robotics wireless card that uses more current than similar other cards, and still my connection flickers between low and good. This is a bit of an annoyance, because my laptop gets almost perfect wireless signal with its Intel PRO/Wireless connection.

I suppose my first question is: Is it possible that something is causing interference to my network in the proximity of my desktop? The antenna is at the back of the PC. I have a power bar and a big power box for my surround sound system. Is it possible that these device are creating enough electromagnetic fields to degrade the signal so much? Maybe I have some screwy drivers and its a software problem. Any help would be appreciated.
My second part of the question is about internet connection sharing.

So lets say I just have a weak signal at the basement floor level (compared to the desk level where my lap top is). I thought, well why not use a cross over cable and share my laptops wireless with the desktop. Sounds like a cool plan. I tried following a couple of tutorials with bridging connections and so on, but it did not seem to work. When I tried to connect in Linux, it just would not work. Now I must admit I havnt tried it on windows yet, but I suspect it also will not work. A... Read more

Answer:Weak wireless signal and Internet Connection Sharing

There are a number of environmental issues which can cause weak wirless signals. I remember back when I lived in England, I had an old Victorian house - the walls in those houses are incredible thick (nice well built houses!) - anyway this as you can imagine this interfered with the wireless signal from the router upstairs to my laptop when I was downstairs. Aside from that, you are absolutely correct about electronic devices causing interference as well, with the signal. Generally I try to keep my router away from ANY electronic device, especially other computers. Watch out for cordless phones within close proximity of the router too, that can cause a lot of problems. I would definitely suggest experimenting a little with moving your surround sound system around and seeing if you can find a significant change in the signal strength.

If all else fails, you can always buy a wireless antenna which would boost your signal. They're reasonably cheap to get these days!

It might pay to just double check your Device Manager (Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager) and check under the Networking section to see if there are any notifications there showing that you have a driver issue with one or more of your devices (look out for a ! or even a red X). If every displays fine in there, then there's most likely no need to reinstall your drivers - it's still good to check for updates though!

I'm not sure about how to configure a... Read more

I got a new ThinkPad Edge E545 at Christmas and I've been having trouble with my internet connection ever since I booted it up. I'm running Windows 7 Pro on it. After entering the passwords for the secure networks at both my parents' and my own home, I still can't stay consistently connected. After I installed the 100+ updates to the computer upon first booting it up, the message saying that I had a loose or broken wire went away (which is good, since I was trying to use wifi, not ethernet). Now, I still will lose internet connection ever few minutes (I think 10-15 minutes is the longest I've had an uninterrupted connection). It will either repair itself and say that it fixed an invalid IP address, or it will tell me to restart the modem. At my parents, 3 laptops, 3 smartphones, and 1 tablet work fine off the wifi. At my house, 2 computers and a bluray player will run just fine. It is only this computer. Is there some sort of driver/download that I am missing that will resolve this problem? If not, I will need to return this computer before my 30 days are up, becuase a laptop without consistent wifi is useless to me.  **This is my 3rd attempt to post this because evertime I hit post I lose internet connection.

Answer:Edge E545 Wifi Connectivity Problems

So I was able to login at work and keep my internet connection. After searching for Lenovo's driver downloads (which was actually difficult to find), I was able to update my wireless network drivers. So far it seems to be working. Will comment again if it doesn't work after I get home. Here is the link: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-edge-laptops/thinkpad-edge-e5...

I was troubleshooting an issue on my son's Thinkpad Edge E545 keyboard (left shift and several keys on left side not working properly), so I removed the keyboard, folliowing the instructions on the Lenovo site. However, after removing and reattaching both ribbons, putting the keyboard back on, putting both keyboard screws back in securely and reattaching the back panel, the right side of the keyboard doesn't work, ie, it won't produce a character. Everything to the left of Y-H-N works but nothing to the right. Also, the original problem is still there so I may need to get a replacement keyboard anyway. However, because the right side of the keyboard won't work, I can't even log in and the computer basically doesn't function.  Any ideas as to where I went wrong removing and reattaching the keyboard ribbons? I had clean hands when touching them and, based on the video I watched, that shouldn't cause them to malfunction.

My new E545 has inconsistent connection speeds to my new router. The first day I got it seemed fast and fine on loading. The next day it slowed and loaded very slowly most of the day with brief periods of average. I looked for a new driver and according to Windows(7) and Lenonvo I have the latest one. I then bought a new router (ASUS N600) hoping that would correct things. It seemed to for a few days and it was pretty fast (60-90mps) but today its dropping a times to 19mps and then back up. My other laptop isnt having any issues connectiong and loading pages fast. Could it be a deffective card? I have tried adjusting card settings to no avail.

I have 3 thinkpads that after a fresh reload are unable to connect to wireless networks. I have gone through and installed the different wireless drivers on the lenovo support website. I have gone through several steps of similar problems others have had but it hasn't made a difference. I have installed: HotKeys & patchPower manager & driverChipsetThe realtek network -ethernet adapter and communications LAN driverI have installed and removed each wireless adapter available Thinkpad Edge 15Type: 0319-46U On a side note in the Device manager screen there is a "Network Controller" alert saying no driver installed for this device. I have determined it is some Realtek device but beyond that I am lost.

Hi, Twi days ago I bought a ThinkPad Edge S430, the wireless wifi connection is so slow and ramdonly lost conection. I have made a speed test with my previous machine a the new one in the same wifi networw and the connection is so slow in my new one. I have put also in the power management setting optimal performance like I read could be a issue about this but the problem is still happening. The machine has windows 8.  Any advice, do you know which one could be the issue? Best Regards.

Answer:Slow wifi connection ThinkPad Edge S430

Hi, juancevi

Is there an Intel wireless card in your S430? If so, then I would recommend checking out  Control Panel ? Programs and Features. Here you can uninstall certain programs from your computer. One that you may find is called the Intel Management Engine. If available, I would recommend uninstalling it. This program has caused issues for me in the past and removing it has helped my WLAN be more stable, so it may help you as well.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes,
Adam

Hi Folks,I just bricked my Thinkpad Edge E545 while attempting to update the BIOS from 1.09 to 1.12. I tried to use a bootable CD, and it seemed to go well, but when it seemed to be done, I got contradictory instructions to either remove the CD and power off or leave the CD in and reboot. I left the CD in the drive and pressed ENTER. The screen went blank, and stayed that way, with no discernable activity. At some point I held the power button to shut it off. That was the last I saw anything on the screen.Anyhow, I tried to use the T400 procedure below to prepare a bootable USB stick with the firmware to flash on it. (In the meantime I have learned that this is the "phoenix crisis disk" procedure). The utilities I got here: http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/%7Eschmitzr/T43_recovery.zipstick preparation (on Win2008R2 system):1) zero'd a USB stick (2GB)2) used WINCRIS.EXE to format the stick (pointed it at the v1.12 "BIOS.WPH")3) unplugged and replugged stick4) copied MINIDOS.SYS, PHLASH16.EXE and BIOS.WPH to the top directory of the new filesystem on the stick5) "safefly removed" the stickreflashing:1) disconnected battery and power cable2) plugged in stick (tried all 4 USB jacks, 2x full and 2x SS)3) pressed and held FN and B keys (also tried FN+R, FN+ESC)4) plugged in power5) pressed power buttonnone of the above had any observable effect. I just picked up an Edge 14 and had to reset it from Windows 7 x64 to  Windows 7 x32.  All the drivers have picked up except for the wireless driver.   The technical specs list the wireless card as Wireless NIC: ThinkPad 11 b/g/n so in theory it should be this driver: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS000979 but Windows says that the driver is incorrect.  I've checked the BIOS and the wireless card is enabled and F9 also shows that the wireless is enabled.  I've tried the rest of the drivers in the matrix in case I had the wrong one but none of them worked either.  Any ideas?

Hello, I am looking for a little bit of help. I have a Lenovo Edge 15 0319-46U laptop I recieved from my educational institution. I have had the laptop since fall of 2012. I've never had a single issue with the laptop except a month ago I noticed my wireless 1x1 b/g/n card stopped working. I'm well knoledged in computers and have already tried updating the drivers but I ran into an issue. My wireless card is no longer being shown on the Device Manager list under Network Adapters or "Unknown Devices", I only see my Wired gigabit card. I went into Bios, checked the button (did all the begginer stuff) and no dice. Wireless still does not work. I went ahead and ordered a new Intel Wireless card for said laptop and made sure the interface worked correctly, so my question is does anyone know of any fixes that could work even if the adapter is not shown on anywhere in the computer? And would anyone know if the Intel 7260-HMWNBWB Dual band card would be compatible with this machine? Thanks in advance for an answer.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 0319-46U wireless problems

Hello and welcome,

The ThinkPad BIOS has a wifi whitelist.  A card has to be a whitelisted model and have a Lenovo FRU number or the laptop will refuse to boot.  Generic cards - even with the correct model number - won't boot on an unmodified BIOS.

Page 113 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual  lists the compatible models and FRU numbers.

Hi, nicholas89

How was your machine reformatted? Did you reinstall Windows with recovery media?

You can try, if you haven't already, to update the drivers from Device Manager. If you right-click on the device in question, select Properties, and then click the Driver tab, there should be a button for update driver. Also, I would make sure that your BIOS is up to date. The latest version for your system can be found here.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

It depends on how close you are to the router and how strong the connection is. If you're far away or there's a lot of interference, the connection speed will automatically drop to ensure data integrity. You may want to see if your access point is operating in 802.11g mode.

Hi, I recently bought a 300Mbps Wireless N Router (TP-Link TL-WR841ND), but I only get 72 Mbps speed on my Thinkpad E430 laptop. As far as I read, the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter only supports speeds up to 150 Mbps (which would still be ok with me), but instead I get 72 Mbps. I tried to tweak the adapter and router settings, but I had no luck. Do I need to change the Wireless adapter? Is it possible to change it, or should I use an external USB Wireless adapter instead? Thank you!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E430 Wireless speed only 72Mbps

Hi Tudorc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would suggest you to check if any other similar device is able to achieve better speeds.

Log to the router's configuration utility by typing its IP address into a browser and change the encryption settings to WPA2 Encryption Only. Choose 40MHz-wide channels in the router?s configuration utility.

Since you are using a 1x1 single-stream card, so a max of 150Mbps is theoretically said to achieve. In addition, you are only on the 2.4GHz band, which is often congested, so you may see lower speeds. The disparity between theoretical and practical Wi-Fi performance comes from network protocol overhead, radio interference, physical obstructions on the line of sight between devices, and distance between devices. Under ideal conditions, actual results for a wireless adapter rated at 150Mbps is perhaps in the range of 50-80Mbps.

Hope this provided enough clarity for your query!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hi, This is my first time posting and I'm hoping someone can help me resolve a strange issue I am having with my wireless connection on my Thinkpad edge.   Basically what happends is I cannot connect to my router unless I set up a network ONLY from my computer.  It will not work if the network is configured on another laptop in the house.   This is all well and good and I am able to connect when I do this but randomly every few days OR when I reboot or boot up from sleep mode I am unable to connect to the network that I set up on my computer.  Every other device in the house is able to connect to the router network that I configured on my computer. Every time this happens I have to reset the router.  I reset back to stock router settings with the NETGEAR SSID and no security and I am unable to connect and everyone else is still able to connect.  Thus I have to set up the network exactly the way it was before so all the other devices in the house won't have to keep changing their information just to connect to the internet.   I have tried updating the adapter drivers and that did not work and sometimes randomly I am able to connect to the stock NETGEAR SSID but this seldom lasts long and I have to go and reconfigure the network again the way it was.  While I have internet and I have found a temporary fix to this problem I would love to get rid of it all together as it is a pain and it seems to be happening more f... I bought the 16GB RAM upgrade for my ThinkPad about 9 months ago and when I first installed it, it was working fine. But a few months back, I looked at my system specs and noticed that the computer was only recognizing 8GB of the 16GB. I thought that one of the sticks might have gone bad, so I checked them individually and both of them were recognized when by themselves, but when both are installed, the computer won't recognize both. I also updated the BIOS thinking that would help, but it did not. So my theory is that the bottom RAM port is bad since it was working before and it isn't now and that both are working properly when by themselves. My warranty is up, not sure if I can renew it just to get it serviced, or if that is going to be a possible suggestion. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello everyone,I recently bought a new ThinkPad e545 with Windows 8. Since the first launch I have noticed a strange issue. The down arrow and the F11 key are not working. I tested them on an online keyboard test to see if maybe there was a mechanical problem with them. The test also showed that those two keys are not working. However, when I hold the Fn key and then press down arrow or F11 the system produces a short beep sound, which would indicate that those keys are responding afterall (I tried that with other keys, the beep sound only goes off when pressing Fn+Down Arrow or Fn+F11).  Is there any way to fix this? Or is a service centre my only option.Thank you for any kind of help

Hi,
We deployed 10 Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (M/N   MP1ZPZA) laptops for a new customer installation.
All systems are running Windows 7 64-bit Professional
The laptops are connected wireless in a Windows Server 2008R2 domain.
We have noticed some slow connectivity issues.
Multiple access points were tested but still had the same issue.
Whenever we ping a workstation the response time is over 800 milliseconds.
I updated the drivers using Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools and I didn?t get any improvement.  Because the wireless adapter is Intel, I installed the latest drivers provided by Intel but the result was the same.
I found that after running Intel WiDi application on any laptop the Ping response time for that workstation will temporarily decrease to less than 5ms (a normal timing range)
A couple of HP laptops were added to the domain for testing but did not experience the same issue with the ping response.
A case was opened with Lenovo technical support (Case#902B6YJ).
After talking with Lorenzo, Ray and Alfonso from Lenovo support the conclusion was that is an engeneering problem  and they suggested us to address the issue to this forum.
Has any else experienced this type of issue?

Hi, I purchased my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 14 0578-A99 a week ago. My wireless internet works intermittently. It detects my wireless network properly, but fails to connect. Then suddenly, after a lot of refreshing/connecting/disconnecting it starts working. I have another Dell laptop on which it connects instantly (indicating that there is nothing wrong with the wireless router). Also, there is one icon for Intel WiFi, and one icon for Wireless Networks on my taskbar. I donot know if these are different, and which one should I enable. Is there any driver which I need to update, or is there anything I am not doing correctly to connect to wireless? Regards,Anish

Answer:Wireless internet working intermittently on Thinkpad Edge 14 0578-A99

You might want to check your power settings in windows 7.   Control panel, power options, under your power plan click change plan settings.  Then change advanced power settings, under wireless adapter settings,  power saving mode, make sure maximum performance is chosen for battery and plugged. Then also under control panel, device manager, network adapters, right click on your wireless adapter, properties, power management, uncheck, "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." FN-F5 should bring up a little window that will allow you to turn on or turn off wireless.   To connect to a network, i'm assuming that you are using windows to control your wireless.  click the bar one and open network and sharing center and connect from there. Another thing that you can do is run Thinkvantage system update and make sure that your drivers are up to date.  If you find more than one, download and install it one at a time and reboot.  Don't do them all at once, sometimes that doesn't work so well. Let us know if any of this works for you.

Like the title says, I tried to roll back windows 10 to 8.1 and it messed up somehow.  There are no boot options on the BIOS.  I pushed f12 to try and boot from source and it goes to a blank screen.  It is not the HD since i tried another one.  It cannot boot from anywhere, HD, USB, or CD.  It's like the options don't exist anymore.  Any help is appreciated!!

Hi, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 and since this morning, it has not registered that it is plugged in. The little symbol in the bottom-right shows me that it is working only on battery power, despite being plugged in and despite me being unable to find any kind of loose connection anywhere. I've seen there's a common "it's plugged in but not charging" problem, but I don't think my problem falls under that category as this laptop isn't even registering that it is plugged in. Can anyone help?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad E545 won't register that it's plugged in

Just to update the situation: the fuse in the plug has now been changed, and the problem has not gone away.

I recently purchased a ThinkPad E545 Edge and its awesome thus far. My only issue is I cannot figure out how to turn of the annoying ambient light sensor, I do not want my screen to adjust automatically. I've searched for other responses to this question but all seem to have a different power management system than mine. When I click on the battery it opens the "Think Vantage Technologies Power Manager 6" and this does not seem to bare resemblance to the power management system that I?ve had seen others describe in instruction on how to disable this feature. I am currently running on Windows 7, can someone please help me out on how to disable this setting? Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad E545 Ambient Light Sensor

I found these steps, but when I arrive at the final step the "enable adaptive brightness" option is not listed but all other options are exactly the same. Any ides as to why I am missing this option?

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 that's about 18 months old. Everything has been fine until now. I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 without a problem. However, I now realize the my CD/DVD player is not working properly. I inserted several different DVDs and CD. I can hear the player spinning as if it's trying to read the disc, but when I check File Explorer, the drive has not been recognized (and no CD or DVD starts).  After doing research, I tried most of the suggestions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060 but I was unable to try to "fix registry entries" because I couldn't find Upperfilters and LowerFilters listed. Perhaps that suggestion didn't apply since the suggestion said to remove them.  I checked the BIOS to make sure the DVD was enabled.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, I have a ThinkPad E545 and every couple of minutes my USB 3.0 port on the left of the laptop, as well as my SD card reader, drop for a few seconds and reconnect. The single usb 2.0 port on the right hand side never has a problem. I have updated drivers and I have alterned the suspend settings in the power options to no avail. The USB ports and SD card reader are really unusable for me at this point as I never know when they will disconnect. I like this laptop and this is the only issue I have discovered. If the SD card reader and USB are unrealted, the 3.0 ports take precednce over the sd card reader.

Greetings,I have recently purchased a ThinkPad Edge e545, which I upgraded to Windows 8.1. I have followed all the instructions, upgrading drivers and such. The system seems to work great except for one thing. In Device Manager, I see there is one Unknown Device, which does not appear to match any available driver downloads on the Lenovo support section (I have tried them all). The information for this device is as follows: Device Instance: ACPI\SMB0001\3&2411E6FE&0Hardware ID: ACPI\VEN_SMB&DEV_0001 Goggle searching turns up a mixed-bag of conflicting information, and links to less than reputable driver files which my spider-sense tells me would be best to not install. Help would be appreciated. The device reappears if it is uninstalled.. And I have also tried the SMBus Windows 7 driver, which has no apparent effect. Thanks,~{Ultima}~

Hello, I just ordered an E540 and it comes with an Intel 7260-N (not AC) mPCIE and it also has an unpopulated M.2 (NGFF) slot presumably for an mSATA cache option. My question is this, can I replace the wireless card with the 802.11AC equivalent? Reading online that replacing the wireless card can cause boot error, but I'm almost certain that I've seen this card (7260-AC) available as configuration option so...? I'd also like to add an mSATA drive to store my OS on and use a 1TB HDD for media (instead of using SSD then using ODD caddy for 1TB HDD, thus losing optical drive).I know that I can add an mSATA card, but where can I buy one? NGFF is fairly new so no one is selling it, and the ones that are have low capacities for high prices. Thanks, Danz207

NGFF is fairly new so no one is selling it, and the ones that are have low capacities for high prices.Note that mSATA and NGFF (now referred to as M.2) are not the same thing.  M.2 cards have a different connector and can be wired for SATA, PCIe or both.  Your laptop has the M.2 SSD slot wired for SATA, so you'll need to look at M.2 SATA SSD's, not PCIe ones.  Whether or not your machine can boot from the M.2 SSD slot will probably be a case of trial and error given that Lenovo only recommend using the M.2 slot for caching. As for available M.2 SSD products, the appropriate one depends on the available space you have.  I couldn't see which length M.2 SSD's could be used in the hardware owners manual for the E540.  However, generally the shortest is going to be 42mm, also known as 2242.  Currently the only product in that length is the MyDigitalSSD 128GB M.2 SATA SSD.  If the slot is longer, up to 80mm, then that opens up the Crucial M500/M550 M.2 SATA (2280) SSD's as an option, which are available in 120/128/240/256/480/512GB capacities.   The Crucial M500 M.2's are available all over the place.  We are still waiting on Crucial getting the M550 M.2 into regular pro... Hi, I have just received a new Thinkpad e545. Prior to receiving it, I had also ordered a ram upgrade. I picked the official Lenovo ram listed for my model: 0B47380 I was sure that that ram would already be installed in the laptop and that I would simply be adding an identical one. However, it turned out that the computer came with samsumg memory instead. My question: is there any chance that the Lenovo and Samsung memory (both provided by Lenovo, Samsung preinstalled, with same speed) will not be compatible? Regards,

Hey guys, just a quick question if anyone has an answer for me!  I recently bought a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 (256 gb - I'm pretty certain anyways, I can't check because I can't access anything on my computer right now). Anyhow, it's a great computer.  My first laptop was an IBM thinkpad and I loved it.  The issue that I'm having right now is that I can't double click icons on my desktop.  It works fine after I restart my computer and so on, but after a couple of hours, it refuses to let me do so.  I used to be able to right click and open folders that way, but even that doesn't work anymore.  I can't seem to open anything whatsoever. This is getting pretty frustrating considering I've had this laptop for less than a month and am already having issues (this and ram issues, good times!). If anyone has any advice, or needs more info, please let me know - I'm dying to get this sorted! Cheers! Patrick

Answer:Wireless 5GHZ bandwidth range support in ThinkPad Edge E520? Answer: NO

Thanks for this info.  I've been having a problem with my wireless connection that I think might be related to this -- your input would be much appreciated. Computer: Thinkpad Edge E520, i5, 500GB, 4GB RAM, Intel WiFi Link 1000 wireless card; running Windows 7 Basically, if I'm in the same room as the router, I get wireless connection, and it's fine.  If I round the corner into the hallway and beyond, I can see the network, but no connectivity.  I've done the whole "updating to most current driver" business, as well as everything that Lenovo support told me to do.  I reset my router (not that I thought that was the problem, since 2 other laptops in the apartment get a connection no problem, and I also couldn't connect to a network at a coffee shop...) then even uninstalled the ThinkVantage Access Connections just in case it and Windows were fighting over who gets to control my internet connection.  Finally, after all this, Lenovo sent me a replacement wireless card (same one) under warranty, so I replaced the card -- no dice. I finally changed my router settings to WPA2 AES, and this has improved the situation *slightly* -- I can now connect, but so extremely slowly that it's useless. Do you think that the fault lies with the card and its inability to tap the 5gHz spectrum?

Just purchased 44 E530 each with Intel Centrino N2230 Wireless card.  Windows 7 installed, laptops log into a Windows domain across (Aruba) wireless AP's.  Issue with speed but mainly ability to actually login via Wireless environment.  Scenario - group 30/31 students try to log in to domain using Wireless but only 6/7 will be able to connect.  Others sit at the 'Welcome' screen.  After 5/10 minutes we reboot the laptops that haven't logged in.  Of these a few may log in this time round (allbeit slowly).  Other students reboot again and gradually a few more will be able to log in.  Others will again just sit at 'welcome' screen.  On a good session all users MIGHT be able to log in but it could take over half an hour because of repeated reboots required.  The wireless driver has been updated but this made little or no difference.  I've also set a Windows Group Policy to 'wait on login' as it was thought the issue might be the Thinkpads needing to see the Wireless LAN before the user tried to log in to the Windows domain. If one of the laptops is tested with Ethernet connection then it works as expected, so it is definitely wireless related.  any advise from anyone?

I installed every other driver (downloaded from website) with no hick-ups. But the AHCI, USB3.0 and SMBUS drivers that I download from the Lenovo website, keep trying to install Catalyst (my video driver)... I've tried to download these same drivers on other machines and it does the same thing. I called customer support and wasted 1 hour going in circles and they kept telling me I had to pay a fee to get an actualy "Tech" person on the phone because everyone else was sales... Currently I cannot enable AHCI mode in bios, and all 3 of my USB3.0 ports do not work. Everything else works fine. I'm very frustrated, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Answer:ThinkPad E545 Win 7 x64 USB3.0, AHCI & SMBUS drivers not working

Update: I just tried to use the Windows 8 Pro recovery media included with the laptop to see if I could get Win 8 on the SSD working 100% and it wouldn't even boot.

Hello, I have the following problem with my brandnew Lenovo Edge 545 System: After exchanging my 1Tb HDD with a 512 Gb SDD and installing all drivers from the Lenovo Homepage, I also installed some games. With Diablo III, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike Source I have the following problem: Shortly after I start the game, the fan starts to run really loudly and after maybe 30sec the ThinkPad shuts down immediately to black screen. Diablo and CSS are working fine, now that I start them in Compatibility Mode, but for Dota this is not possible, as it is started via Steam. Also I think it is only a workaround and there must be a problem somewhere with my computer. The CPU usage is on constant 30 - 40% alltough the fan is turning like hell. I am using Windows 7, 64bit. Has anyone had the same problems, or maybe even a solution? EDIT: It seems as if the AMD Radeon HD 8570M is heating up very fast. From 40 to 95░C in ca. 30sec. What can I do against this? The driver is up to date.
