Thinkpad Edge E430 black screen with mouse

Question: Thinkpad Edge E430 black screen with mouse

Hello! So I have a Lenovo laptop Thinkpad Edge E430. AVG Safe Search wanted to restart the laptop (I can't remember why, but probably just to make sure everything was okay).I did, and now when I turn the computer on normally, I get nothing but a black screen with a mouse, instead of the user icons.I can run it in Safe Mode, but I'd really like to be able to use my laptop normally, since a lot of things don't work in Safe Mode.Any ideas?(Thank you so much!!)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 and it was working fine until today. Today I worked on the laptop as usual and just turned off the Fast Startup setting in the Windows 8 and then restarted the computer. Now it only shows a black screen (LCD backlights are on but there is nothing on the screen). I hear the usual BIOS beep sound but I can't see the BIOS screen or the Windows. I've tried to connect to a an external monitor via HDMI. Amazingly, both my laptop's screen and external monitor works fine when the laptop is connected to the external screen. But when I disconnect them, again I can only see the black screen. I turned on the Fast Startup settings in Windows 8, but it didn't work. Then I loaded the default settings from the BIOS and it didn't worked too. Finally I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS to test if it is because of the operating system but it didn't help too. I've tried all of this using the laptop's screen while it was connected to the external screen. It is very confusing for me. It seems like the screen is only working when an external screen is also connected to the laptop. I would be very happy if anyone can help me about this problem.

Hi I had ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430. First, delivery was delayed by 1 week later when I checked the machine, mouse pad and track pad were not working. I tried reinstalling drivers, checked BIOS settings. There was no mention of Mouse & TrackPad in Control Panel. Atlast, I raised a case with Lenovo customer care.  It has been almost 2 weeks, nothing is moving. Any time I call, same response they arr investigating the root cause. I am fed up with this service. I would suggest to others please think twice before falling into Lenovo trap. -Amit

I read through the manual and am confident that I can take apart the machine, replace the cracked screen and put it back together. I replaced hinges in my old HP and a motherboard in my friends HP. My father was able to get me a great deal on this machine I have now. I put in some extra ram and a 32gb SSD for RapidBoot and I'm pretty much in love. I take great care of it but had an accident and dropped/cracked the screen.

The laptop was ordered custom so its a bit more of a challenge to find specific information on what the part #'s are. The laptop has working microphones but was not purchased with a webcam which I regret. I would like to replace the LCD panel and install an integrated camera in one fell swoop.

My questions are: What model number of LCD panel so I need. What model number of camera do I need. And lastly, will I need to purchase a new LCD cable that has the ability to plug into the camera? Or does my current LCD cable have a lone male cable plug waiting for a camera?

Machine Type: 3254
Serial #: xxxxxxx
CPU: i5-3210
HDD: 7200rpm 320gb
Came with 4gb of RAM

Thanks so much! Any advice here would be appreciated

I am experiencing the issue with black screen with white mouse cursor immediately following an upgrade to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 from Microsoft Store to my  Lenovo E430 laptop, which I did on Feb 13, 2014.  The installation of the Win 8.1 upgrade appeared to proceed normally: first downloading, then installing, then configuring.  Upon rebooting after installation completed, an error message flashed for a second and then it went to black screen.   Cannot use laptop in this state, which is a serious problem for my work.   . Hi, I would like to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad. There are pretty good offers at the Outlet. I am not sure about the model that I should get. I am deciding between the L430 and the E430. While I have a preference for the L430, I have some concerns/questions: Regardless of the model choice, will a 14inch screen be enough for school and other stuff like watching movies? What are the advantages of the E430? Some models are priced higher than the L430. Background:I currently have a 15.6inch laptop. I think I want a smaller one as I need to carry my computer to school. The 15.6 inch is pretty heavy. However, I am very used to that format and a bit scared that a 14inch might be too small. E.g. if I work with Excel, Word, or Outlook. Although the L430 seems to be the more robust computer with the better specifications as compared to the E430, the L430 looks a bit old and it might not be as good as e.g. for watching movies. I want to use my computer both for school and free time. Thanks for your help! Yellow Squash

My laptop thinkpad Edge e430 is not powering up. When I plug in the AC cord the LED indicator does not turn on. I have checked the AC adapter with the multimeter and it gives 20 volt output. So the AC adapter is fine.  The laptop also does not power on with a fully charged batter. I have removed the HDD, Memory, Optical drive and the CMOS battery and then pressed the power button for 30 seconds. The laptop does not wake up.  It is quite weird as the laptop should show some kind of error So i may have an idea what is happening.  Discussing with people on other forums gives me an idea that the power setup of the laptop is faulty. Can some body here guide me to what the problem is and how can i fix it?

Hi everyone,About a year and a half ago I bought a ThinkPad Edge E430 and its been working fine, until last week when I got a terrible virus which really corrupted my computer. I've managed to remove the malware, but as a result the registry is still damaged. I cannot change folder options, my start menu is blank, all my files have been moved to a TEMP file among all these other issues. I've run multiple malware scanners and registry repair programs but these issues aren't resolving. So I'm thinking that I'll need to just reinstall windows 7, to completely repair the registry and ensure everything is back to normal. I've backed up all my files, but my concern is about the reinstallation itself. How could I do this when Windows 7 came preloaded onto the laptop, so I don't have the installation disk. And would the product key for windows 7 (found under the battery) definitely work a second time around?

Answer:Windows 7 reinstallation - ThinkPad Edge E430

Hi Cosmos29,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that your query is about reinstalling the Windows 7 OS on ThinkPad Edge E430.
When your computer is working normally, press the blue ThinkVantage button to launch the SimpleTap Program (for Windows 7) or the ThinkVantage Productivity Center program (for Windows XP and WindowsVista).

Note:
Depending on the date when your computer was manufactured, your computer might have the
Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox program preinstalled instead of the Simple Tap program or the ThinkVantage Productivity Centre program.

You also can use the ThinkVantage button to interrupt the start-up sequence of your computer and start the Rescue and Recovery workspace, which runs independently of the Windows operating system and is hidden from it. If the Windows operating system is not running properly, the Rescue and Recovery workspace can help you do the following:

? Get the current system information.
? Rescue a file from your Windows environment or restore back-up files, provided you have made backups
by use of the Rescue and Recovery program.
? Configure your computer or start the ThinkPad Setup.
To access the Rescue and Recovery workspace, turn on the computer; then, while the ?To interrupt normal start-up, press the blue ThinkVantage button? message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the ThinkVantage button. The Rescue and Recovery screen opens. For additional information, see ?Us... Read more

Hello everybody, this is my first post here as I just bought an Edge e430 from Lenovo. It came with Win 8 installed (let's skip this) and as I tried to connect to the LAN for verifying the license I realized that I did not have any network connection. No way to connect, no matter what I clicked and what I switched on/off.... no connection (even the local one). As I am a Linux user, after figuring out how to boot from CD I tried Linux on a Live CD to see whether it was a Win 8 issue or a card one. No connection there too. Trying to set up here and there I think I grasped the problem, however I does not make any sense to me. Is it possible that the new model is IPv6 only (with no IPv4 retrocompatibility). If this is the case (I repeat: it doesn't make sense) what should I do to make it working, at least in Win 8? Thank you very much for your time. P.S. Forgot to say that I don't have any WiFi to try.

Answer:Thinkpad edge e430 ethernet problem

Ok, I see no reply but I keep updating the problem. I took the pc to work, connected the cable and.... tada! Connection working! I am actually posting it from the Linux live CD. The question is, why my home LAN isn't working??? I used it for over one year and had (at least) 5 different laptops connected without the smallest glitch. Any ideas?

I've got an E430 with 16gb ssd drive, and tried to use expresscache to speed up my computer.I used "eccmd.exe -info" to check out how it works and here is the result.Mounted : YesPartition Size : 14.91 GBReserved Size : 3.00 MBVolume Size : 14.91 GBTotal Used Size : 3.74 GBTotal Free Space : 11.17 GBUsed Data Size : 3.67 GBUsed Data Size on Disk : 3.74 GBAs you can see,now the "total used size" is 3.74GB which indicates that the cache has benn stored on the sdd drive. But every time I shut the computer down, and restart it, check the status, the "total used size"just return to about 300MB(maybe even lower), I wonder is this how it supposed to work like? Or this software  just doesn't function correctly on my computer, and if it does is malfunctioned, what I'm I supposed to do to fix it? Thank you...

Oh,and here is another thing that I noticed. A couple of days ago, I deleted the hibernation partition on my SSD drive because it takes up 8gb of storage, and seldom do I use hibernation. But I noticed that after I deleted the partition, my computer's boot up time seems to be slower than before, does that partition has some thing to do with boot up time?

Hi,I am looking to buy a lenovo laptop with the intention of using it mostly for word/excel applications, internet browsing and skype, and basic multimedia tasks (online video streaming, movies). The laptop's emissions (noise/heat) are key for me and by looking online, the E335 version seemed to be praised for its very low emissions and its low price. The only drawback is that it has the AMD E2 2000 processor, which performs much lower than its intel i3 counterparts.I wanted to check for your experience with the emissions of the E335, and whether the weaker processor would play a role in the performance of the laptop for the basic tasks intended. Also, I wanted to ask whether choosing the E430 version with intel i3 and would result in any drawbacks in terms of emissions. Thanks!loukianos

Answer:Choice between ThinkPad Edge E335 and E430

Hello. This is all a matter of budget and taste, plain and simple. In my experience, the AMD mobile APU's simply aren'ton par with the performance of the Core-i processors, and even when running the same clock speed as theirIntel counterparts, they run hotter, sometimes much hotter. They are a budget option though, and as such I guessthey will do their job adequately. Here is a comparison for the AMD E2-2000 vs the Intel i3-3110M Ivy Bridge. AMD E2-2000 vs Intel Core i3-3110M The difference is vast when it comes to available features and performance, but the AMD uses much less power, but that will be very apparent in its performance and will be a huge factor in how long the machine will last for youbefore you need to update it. My 2 cents is always go with the Intel Core-i option. They are very energy efficient, specially since the Ivy Bridgearchitecture was introduced, and the smallest i3's really are a powerful option for a day-to-day machine. And themachines that come with them aren't so much more expensive than the AMD powered machines. Lastly, have you checked out the new E440 models? The Haswell line of Intel CPU's is much more energy efficientthan the earlier Ivy Bridge models. ThinkPad E440 Laptop Cheers!

Hi, I recently bought a 300Mbps Wireless N Router (TP-Link TL-WR841ND), but I only get 72 Mbps speed on my Thinkpad E430 laptop. As far as I read, the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter only supports speeds up to 150 Mbps (which would still be ok with me), but instead I get 72 Mbps. I tried to tweak the adapter and router settings, but I had no luck. Do I need to change the Wireless adapter? Is it possible to change it, or should I use an external USB Wireless adapter instead? Thank you!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E430 Wireless speed only 72Mbps

Hi Tudorc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would suggest you to check if any other similar device is able to achieve better speeds.

Log to the router's configuration utility by typing its IP address into a browser and change the encryption settings to WPA2 Encryption Only. Choose 40MHz-wide channels in the router?s configuration utility.

Since you are using a 1x1 single-stream card, so a max of 150Mbps is theoretically said to achieve. In addition, you are only on the 2.4GHz band, which is often congested, so you may see lower speeds. The disparity between theoretical and practical Wi-Fi performance comes from network protocol overhead, radio interference, physical obstructions on the line of sight between devices, and distance between devices. Under ideal conditions, actual results for a wireless adapter rated at 150Mbps is perhaps in the range of 50-80Mbps.

Hope this provided enough clarity for your query!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hi, I recently bought some Thinkpad EDGE E430 and E530 for my company. But one of them, at the first boot, instead of showing the first time Windows setup wizard it booted to Windows login with an already defined user named 'obe' and it ask for a password. I can't enter to Windows. I have tried to make 'factory settings' for resintalling Windows but the System Recovery Options always ask me for the password of 'obe' user. I called Lenovo support and the agent told me to use another E430 to produce a recovery DVD, so I made it (because I bought more E430 in the same order), but is the same, always asking for the password. Please see the picture. I need to give the laptop to one of my employees, he is goint to travel this next weekend and he need to take this laptop to the trip.

Answer:New Thinkpad Edge E430 came with a Windows user and cannot login (who is 'obe' ???)

welcome to the community. press F1 when the first splash screen appears to get into bios. make sure that the cd/dvd drive is listed first in the boot order (or usb cd/dvd, if your machine doesn't have an internal). then put the recovery dvd in the drive and reboot the machine. it should load the recovery process from the dvd, rather than any hdd partition, and allow you to recover/reimage the machine. please post back if this doesn't work or if you have further ?s. cheers.

Hello to all, new one here to the forum. Well, title says it all... At first I think it was a problem with the way Linux suspends the machine, but now I realize it happens too when I suspend from Windows (I have dual boot with Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17 actually). It started making it sometimes, not always, but now always happens: I suspend, close the lid and put the notebook on my bag. Hours or even minutes later, when I want to use it again and open the lid, its shuts off right at that very moment. If I suspend and 2 minutes later resume with the notebook still on the table, everything goes fine... so I suspect it may be a time thing or bad contact with the battery, but really don't know. I'm reticent to bring it to tech service because of several reasons, so I want to share this and hope to hear if someone had the same problem and how fixed it, if it can be fixed. Oh, and sorry for my perhaps strange english, I'm argentinian.

Hey all, My wife's laptop, e420, has been having issues for the last 3-4 months. It started where she would shut the laptop and it would not go to sleep, the screen would just be black. You would have to hit the power button to wake up. A new issue is that we get the dreaded blue screen. The error shows that there is a problem power management when shutting the laptop. I have tried to debug the dump file with little help and I have updated all the drivers. I have a feeling the power management drivers became corrupt on an update but not sure. Any thoughts? I have updated the bios as well. Thanks!

I'd start by repairing or reinstalling the OS and go from there. Then you'll know wether is hardware or software related.

Hello everyone. I'm having problems with my edge E330. It's been working like a charm for 2.5 years. One day I had it connected to external TV, and closed the lid, without turning off. It went into hibernation, and since that, only ext. monitor worked. After a few attempts of changing startup settings, it's now completely black on both screens(failure!). I've managed to save files via the SystemRescueCD (thx, linux!), but windows or even BIOS won't load, it seems. The machine powers up, and then it's stuck. The internal monitor seems physically broken, but I can't be 100% sure of that. Anyone experienced a similar situation, or has any clue what to do? Should I try to replace the screen, or maybe the hd first, to check if the monitor actually works? Thx in advance.

Hi Davidb1,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Is there any LED indication on the system, have you checked performing power drain?

If you have not, then please follow the steps, remove AC adapter and the battery from the system. Press and hold power button for 15 to 20 seconds and release. Perform this steps 2 to 3 times and after that connect only AC adapter and try switching ON the system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Hi, I was wandering about replacing my current cpu with something more powerful. I-3110m is ok but, i'm doing some work in Matlab and Solidworks, and sometimes my cpu chokes. The only thing that stops me from buying new cpu is heating of new cpu. i3-3110m is 35W TDP, so as i7-3612/32QM but they are incredibly hard to find in good prices. on the other hand there is i7-3610Qm which is easily found but runs on 45W TDP. Question is: How much hotter can my laptop get? Maybe someone has E430 with i7-3610qm?

I bought a Sony SRS-X7 Blutooth speaker to get rid of the cables. The device works perfectly with several other devices: iphone, blackberry, an Asus tablet, but i havn't been able to make it work with my laptop.I was able to add the device. Was founded and recogniced by the laptop, but when almost finishing the process appears a message "Configuring bluetooth services" and stays there. I've tried to wait, even from one day to another, and the message remains there. After forcing to close this message window, the speakers figure between the bluetooth devices, but when trying to connect an "error establishing connection" message appears.I've tried to install the other driver available on the support site (an intel, this one is a Broadcom) with no results.Appreciate your help, as i'm seriusly thinking (don't want to) on replace the laptop. Best regards.

Hi, I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254 T1Q laptop, I need suitable Wireless (Wifi) driver. My OS is Windows 7 64 bitUltimate. I tried with many drivers, but no use. Please help me. Thanks in advance. -Thiyagarajan

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254 T1Q - Need suitable wifi driver

Hey there thiyagarajaner,

I believe you are using the ThinkPad 11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi card. Have you tried using the System Update Tool? This typically will instal the drivers that match your system. Hope this helps.

As an alternative there is also this driver, that may work in the even that the one from Broadcom does not.

Hello, I have seen various posts about similar problems, though not on Edge E130. Tried their solutions, to no avail. The screen is black. No faint image. Machine powers up (LEDs glow, noise of fan and hard disk). I have no external video connection. Have tried taking battery out, pressing on button for 1 minute, plugging machine to power (no battery) and restart. No success. Did not initiate any kind of update (certainly not BIOS!), upgrade or new software install (though the machine has been asking to upgrade to Windows 10, which I have not done yet). Running Windows 8.1 (as far as I can remember, as I cannot actually check - the screen is black).  AVG antivirus, updated and fully run about one week ago. Help? Please?

Two days ago my wife's laptop gave up, apparently. On startup the red led lights up and the fan starts. After 10-12 seconds the fan revs up to maximum and stays that way. There's not even a flickering on the screen. I've tried everything I can think of. Connected external display, vga and hdmi and there's nothing on them. Tried to boot to a Windows install DVD but that doesn't work. Tried to remove , reinstall DIMM's. I've had the HDD out and connected to another computer and it seems ok. Checked the LCD connectors and they seem ok too. There's no responsewhen pressing F2 or any other key on startup. Any ideas appreciated! Best regards,Per

Hi Per,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that there is no display in your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15.

I would like to thank you for all the efforts you have done to fix the issue on your own.

I suggest you to perform Flee Power as well and check. Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,

What happens if you connect an external monitor to the machine? If that works, it means your graphics card is still okay. So issue might be with the LCD or a BIOS setting (external display first)If you still have a black screen you may likely need motherboard replacement.

Ok so today I turned on my laptop and everything seemed fine, regular starting up windows message appeared but after that, what usually should've been the login screen, was replaced by a black screen. I could move my mouse pointer but that was about it, It wouldn't load the login scren. I booted up safe mode and login screen came up fine. Now before you link me to a solution and brush me off, I tried alot of things on my own. I deleted AMD Radeon HD and nothing changed. I did a system restore and nothing. Ok so maybe thats not alot of things, but that was all I could think of. Any help would be apreciated. Thank you.

I've had this Thinkpad Edge E430 since 2012 and have loved it, but recently I've been having a problem with it. In order to start it up I have to start it at least twice, and now it seems that the AC adapter must be plugged in for it to start. What will happen the first time or when it's just running on the battery is that the red indicator light will turn on, and I will hear the fan and the harddrive start up, but the screen will remain black and the computer will not respond to anything. When I have it plugged in and try the second time, it will start up no problem, and there doesn't seem to be any response issues once the laptop is up and running. I thought it might be a battery problem, but it has the same start up issues when I took out the batter and just had the AC adapter plugged in. Any ideas what this might be?

I've updated my drivers recently trying to get other games to work, so it's not an issue with them not being up-to-date.  And that's about as far as my computer knowledge goes in this area.  Posting my DxDiag in a comment. Edit: WOW.  I do not remember that being that long.

Repeated crashes leading to black screen, perhaps graphics problem? In the past three days I have had three fairly similar crashes ? pattern as follows:I leave the screen with eg Windows Live Mail and Internet Explorer 11 open but usually  minimised to the taskbar, for about 20-30 minutes.  The first and third time ?Standby? was set to ?Never?, the second time I?d left it with lid closed manually to Standby.  Each time, on return it seems OK, but as I revisit those windows the cursor starts behaving erratically, while the busy wheel turns constantly, and the programs stop responding.   Today the minimised IE refused to re-open at first, as did Windows Explorer. Once  I managed to get Task Manager up from the Taskbar very slowly, but its window was blank.    Ctrl-alt-delete doesn?t work. The Start button either freezes altogether or responds very slowly, and ?Shut down? just hangs on a black screen partly backlit. The first time there was a message: ?Failure to display security and shut-down options?, followed eventually by an entirely black screen, but power light remained on.  The second time the black screen appeared suddenly before I could try to shut down. The third time after a while the busy wheel stopped and I tried to open Event Viewer but it didn?t open, Internet Explorer gradually opened and then froze.  Start-shutdown led to a backlit black screen with a fragment of the language bar... I've got several T510 that i updated about a week ago through the System update utility - there were about a dozen updates that i applied to these machines.I should mention that this is in a corporate environment, where we have a forced screensaver after 30min inactivity. Also most of the T510s are in docking stations with 1 or 2 external monitors. After appling these updates, the machines after 30min go to screensaver as normal, but then after about 60mins the T510 screen goes black as well as the external monitor. Moving the mouse or pressing any keys on keyboard has no effect. The notebooks are still running since i can hear the fan and the hard drive turning, and the vpro confirms that the system is on, but there is no responce from the OS (Windows 7 x64), no ping, no RDP, its as if the OS has just frozen.I've checked the event log and there is nothing special incept that the system just freezes at one point and the only way to get the system back is to do a hard reset on the system.I have communicated with lenovo support and their suggestion is to reformat - not an option for 20 notebooks.I have started uninstalling the updates that were applied but at this point i have not found the culprit.Just hope someone may be in the same boat or have an idea what this may be from? Thanks

Me again! At this point (after 2 lost days of work!) We don't have anything special saved on there, it's all in the cloud (scary), so a reset would be awesome. My partner tried the a USB boot (since the battery is integrated and we can't remove and there are no cd/dvd drives, we made a usb flash drive). No success. Also: It's been 'upgraded' to windows 10.

Hello Lenovo community! I've had a Thinkpad for years now - it's old enough it still says IBM Thinkpad - and it's time for a new computer, so I'll be ready against the sad day this one can't handle what I need anymore. I've narrowed it down to two Thinkpads, but I can't decide between them or see what the differences between them are. Perhaps someone here knows? The two are the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 627156U and the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254AEU. They both have 4 gigs of RAM and 500 gigs of Hard Drive space, though I think the 56U has a chiclet keyboard and the AEU has beveled. Does anyone know if the 56U has a full sized keyboard despite being chiclet? (I'm a writer, so the keyboard is a deal maker or breaker. It's also why I'm looking at 14" screens - all the 15.6" ones have that number pad and the keyboard shoved to the side. All I can see is that the keyboards are "Spill resistant", which doesn't tell me the size of the keys.)Does anyone have any knowledge of these two machines? Or even opinions on the two?

Answer:What's the difference? Thinkpad E430 56U vs Thinkpad E430 AEU

Hey there ChangelingChild,

I found this threadhere that may of be some interest to you. I see in the PSRef that both machines you are looking at come with a 6-row, spill resistant, multimedia FN keys keyboard. Where are you seeing a beveled keyboard? Generally they are island style/chiclet full sized keyboards. I'm certain some our E430 users should have some feedback as well.

E430: 6271-56U
i5-3210M(2.5Ghz), 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HD, 14in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD 4000 Graphics, CDRW/DVDRW, 802.11bgn wireless,Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 64

E430: 3254-AEU
i5-2450M(2.5GHz), 4GB RAM,500GB 7200rpm HD,14in 1366x768 LCD,Intel HD 3000 Graphics,CDRW/DVDRW,Intel 802.11bgn wireless,Bluetooth,1Gb Ethernet,UltraNav,Fingerprint reader,Camera,6c Li-Ion,Win7 Pro 64

It looks like the Primary difference between the machines lay with the processor, it's compatibility with RAM modules, and the integrated graphics. The 3210M appears to out perform the 2450M but you will need to take a look at this and see for yourself of the impact to your day to day performance/usage. You can see more indepth information when looking at the PSRef and comparing the two.

I hope this provides some information to help guide you in your decision. Good Luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

I've had my new edge for a couple of weeks. It runs windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm having lots of problems with the trackpad which freezes and is very jerky in both ie9 and firefox4. I've looked on the forum and can see that this as a regular problem. I've tried changing the settings in control panel as suggested but this makes no difference. I looked to change the driver, but there does not seem to be any available for the 64 bit version of windows 7. Any suggestions, as its getting very irritating!! Charles

If you don't already have it, download and run System Update.  See if it finds any hardware that needs updated.

Also download and run ThinkVantage Toolbox and run the hardware diagnostics.  See if there's any problems with the hardware.

I just recently purchased a refurbished Thinkpad edge 15" with the intel 2.4 ghz processor 2 GB ram and 64 bit operating system.  Well aparently it wasnt actually "refurbished" because literally right out of the box it had problems.  Im not sure who inspects these but they didnt do a good job. The mouse cursor freezes ocassionally and the only way to move the cursor again is to click on the screen and then I can move it again, but even this doesnt work sometimes. Also the mouse cursor freezes more often when the computer has been running after an hour or so.  But I had my gateway and would have it on for 24 hours at a time and never once experienced this.  Please someone help me out on this. Thanks for the help in advance

Answer:Mouse cursor freezes on new Thinkpad Edge 15"

PS: The mouse cursor freezes while using the mouse pad, however if I use the trackpoint it never freezes.  So it must be some problem with the pad itself.

When I say behave strangely, I mean is exactly that: Anything from not work at all, to reverse so that left means right...until I press right and then things sometimes fix for a while. I'm sure that this is not entirely the fault of the touchpad itself, as I have plugged in a known working USB mouse and it also appears to suffer this problem. It's very strange. It's very annoying and I don't think I'll be able to keep the laptop if this can't be fixed. I really hope this is a driver or bios issue as with luck this will be fixable in software. --Rory Becker

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 - Mouse buttons behave strangely

I had the same problem. My Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 0301 (15"), wich I bourght two month ago, has been repaired 3 times - new motherboard, new palmrest, new keyboard and new software installation. It didn't solve the problem.I then tried going in the BIOS and disabling all power management including Intel SpeedStep technology, and also setting the powermanagement to maximum performance in Windows (Windows 7 X64).Now the touchpad and trackpoint works perfectly - so this must be a failuer in the powermanagement in this model.

I got my ThinkPad a few days ago and I've finally gotten the camera to work. After I had finally fixed the camera by installing the proper drivers though, it came up with a new problem: the camera does not display color, nor does it let me enable anything to display colors. The "ColorEnable" option is grayed out when I access its settings through the ThinkVantage Communications Utility. I've tried modifing every single option to no avail. No matter what application uses the webcam, it's always in grayscale. Even if just the laptop itself is the only one using it, it's still in grayscale. It leads me to believe that it's a problem with the camera itself and not any one application. I have not been able to find any solution at all no matter how hard I try to look. Any help would be appreciated. All my camera drivers are up to date as of today. Windows 7 Pro, 64-bitLenovo ThinkPad Edge e540

Answer:ThinkPad Edge e540 integrated camera only in grayscale/black and white

I have the same problem. I have returned the laptop 2 times to the technical service, but according to them, there is no failure in the hardware... The first time they answered that the problem comes from the drivers or updates, but I had everything updated.I have realized that the camera is in color when the illumination of the room is high enough, but in blank and white the rest of the time.In my case I have Windows 8 installed.I am starting to be fed up with that issue because, if there is no problem with the hardware and the camera is working properly that way, it must be indicated in the specifications of the product that we buy a black and white camera as in the 70s.

When I power up the laptop, it lights up & shows nothing but a black screen. The lights below the screen (such as the 'Battery' light) are blinking, but when the laptop starts up, it makes no noise & shows no logo. I was using it yesterday (May 7th) on Firefox & it suddenly blacked out. I rebooted it using the power button & logged in, but within a few minutes the screen was black again. Already called up Lenovo Premium Support and they told me to call the Hardware Manufacturers (not sure if that's exactly what they're called) & we're not exactly willing to pay for service.A few months ago we had done a System Reset that cleared everything since we've had it nearly 4 years, and it's been working fine & properly since then, but we don't know what went wrong.Help?

Hi Everyone! The screen on my 14" Lenovo Thinkpad Edge (TYPE 0199 - 23U) is broken.  My son threw his toy at the screen, while I was taking a final exam, no less.    Anyway, I would like to order a new one, but want to make sure that I choose the correct one.  A factory screen from Lenovo costs more than I paid for the computer, so I've been looking on eBay.  I found this listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400230876522&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:ITIs this the right screen from my computer? Thanks for your help!

I'm looking into buying a new Thinkpad to replace my trustworthy but aging T42. When I look at the various Edge models, I see that there are different types of screens across the 13/14/15 inch models. The 13" Edge page refers to "Glare" HD screens; The 14" Edge page refers to Glossy HD screens; andThe 15" Edge page refers both to "Glare" HD and Anti-Glare HD screens. Is there a difference (other than size) for screens across the 13/14/15 inch model lines? By "Glare" does Lenovo mean "Glossy", or did they just forgot to add "Anti-" before "Glare" I saw the 14" Edge model at Best Buy. The laptop looked nice and functioned well, barring the exceptionally glossy screen. It reflected the store's lights a lot, so I'm doubting it's ability to be a good laptop outdoors. On the bright side, I could probably use it as a mirror in the morning... If the other Edge models have the same screen, I'll consider buying a T410... or another business-line laptop from another manufacturer.

My new Edge E430 wakes from sleep inexplicably. Under the power plan, I have wake timers disabled for both battery and AC power. Under scheduled tasks, I have reviewed every scheduled task and not one has "allow wake from sleep" checked. Yet the machine spontaneously wakes from sleep (that is, without human input) after approximately 3 hours. How do I determine which task is causing wake? So I got a iTunes update a couple months ago. While I don't really like the new iTunes my more pressing problem is that it seems to be affected by the Smart Audio Driver and/Or the Dolby equalizer app. I tried the new driver from Lenovo but it does not seem to fix the iTunes issue which is iTunes freezes if I open either the Smart audio or the Dolby app. I tried to uninstall the Lenovo Conexant driver combo which unistalls both the Smart audio App and the Dolby App. Then allowing Windows to install a basic driver. Which does solve the iTunes freeze ups. What is troubling is that without that Dolby equalization the audio quality is dreadfully bad and worse yet even with decent headphone the fequency range is very poor. I guess I know now why the Dolby app is included. It makes a bad sounding audio chip sound better. My question is weather its worth trying a different driver to imporve sound? Or just wait for maybe a iTunes update or a Lenovo driver update that may fix the issues. I know that the Thinkpad line is not exsactly for audiophiles. But I was surprised the quality was not a little better.

I just got my 1st  lenovo tablet pc (x200t multi-touch w7 32bit). However, my first experience is not so smooth.I am having a screen flicker issue in secondary landscape mode (not the default landscape mode) whenever I move my mouse beyond the right edge of the screen. From the symptom,  it seems like Windows 7 didn't stop the mouse from moving out of the screen, and hence  Windows 7 tries to redraw everything from the top up to the cursor repeatitively (i.e. flickering)In other orientation, the mouse is actually stopped before moving out of the screen because I can still see the edge of the cursor when I move to far right. Does anyone know of a solution?  If not, I would like to know if anyone else experience this issue. You can reproduce this by1. rotation the screen orientation until buttons on the screen is at the top of the screen (i.e. the secondary landscape orientation)2. move your move beyond the right edge of the screen.3. screen starts to flicker I have updated all the drivers and software via Windows Update and Lenovo ThinkVantage. ThinkPad BIOS Update 3.11-1.04ThinkPad Power Manager 2.05Lenovo Fingerprint Software for Windows 7 32 bit 3.3.0.58Lenovo thinkVantage Toolbox (32-bit) 6.0.5449.31Here is my configuration Intel Core 2 Duo SL9400 (1.86GHz, 6MB L2, 1066MHz)1Genuine Windows 7 Professional 321212.1" Enhanced Multitouch WXGA LED Panel with Wide viewing AngleIntel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD2 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRA... I recently bought a Thinkpad Edge 15 with the ATI graphics card, i5-560, 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HDD. Everything is perfect apart from the screen resolution. The screen looks good, but i can do with a better resolution that 1366x768. So i was just wondering if there is a way i can upgrade the screen by the official lenovo channels, maybe take my laptop to a lenovo service centre nearby and they can replace the screen.

all of the screens on all of the edge models have 1366x768.  the only choices are between glossy and matte.

Hey guys, I recently bought a Thinkpad Edge 11 and i noticed that the upper part of the screen bezel is seated a bit flimsy. If you slightly tap on the left and right side of the bezel (just left and right from where the webcam is installed) it makes a rattling sound and everytime I open the notebook up you can hear the bezel making a sound as the pressure of the closed lid is taken off of it.It doesn't look like it's falling apart though, I was just wondering about the "flimsyness". Is this something within the normal quality of the Thinkpad Edge or did I get a flawed unit? I really don't want to exchange this thing again, as this is already a replacement machine I got because of a non responsive space bar -.- Best regards

I bought a ThinkPad Edge 14 running Win7 pro about 9 months ago and it had been working fine.  A couple of weeks ago, I started having issues where the screen would go blank at random.  Windows and any software I had running kept running fine until the screen would come back on.  It did not matter if my power cord was plugged in or if I were on battery.  Reading previous threads, I did switch my refresh rate to 50Hz but this did not really help.  Now the problem has gotten worse.  The screen not only goes blank but also sets me back to the login screen.  Sometimes, I don't have enough time to even login before the screen goes blank.  Yesterday, it was bad enough that I got the following messages:  "Interactive logon process has failed.  Please see event log." Event Log Entries:"The winlogon notification subscriber GPClient was unavailable to handle a notification event.""The winlogon notification subscriber SessionEnv was unavailable to handle a notification event.""The winlogon notification subscriber Sens was unavailable to handle a notification event." The machine tried Startup Repair a couple of times and it seemed to work once but then the screen went blank again. It is also worth mentioning that, as of yesterday, two new events happened: 1.  I noticed that if the laptop went blank awhile, then I could hold "Fn" and it the login screen would appear briefly.2.  Sometimes, i... Hello . . . I have a Thinkpad Edge (Product ID 0578CT0), and the screen will not display anything. Also, using HDMI output doesn't work. On booting, the laptop screen will "flash" black a couple times, but doesn't display anything. It started a couple of days ago. . . on resume from sleep, the screen would delay in displaying, then you would see a whole bunch of scan lines and "rolling" vertical video, then it would be fine. The last time, however, it never came back. Ideas? Jim

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11" Screen

welcome to the community.

if you download your Hardware Maintenance Manual
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/75y6925_03.pdf
have a look at pg94, the last block of the grid. it lists 4 possible part numbers for your pc:
04W137904W045004W04510A66647

these may help you to source a panel and other needed parts.
the manual, itself, should help should you choose to do the repair yourself.

hope this helps.

Hi! my ThinkPad shows a strange behavior... Suddenly the screen brightness was reduced by the system. Brightness is "15" but it is darker than before. I can not find any option to raise brightness!!!! I am using a Lenovo power supply unit. It is annoying to use the ThinkPad at daylight. Really exhausting looking at a screen thats too dark. Any tips? Regards, nightwatch83

Answer:Screen Brightness (ThinkPad Edge 15)

nightwatch83,

Some basic questions...

If you reboot to windows and are on AC is the screen still dim?   Does it respond at all to screen brightness increase / decrease settings?

If you restart and go into BIOS on AC, how bright is the display?  Any different than in Windows?

If the problem seems isolated in Windows, I would reload the power manager and hotkey drivers and recheck the settings in power manager for screen brightness.

Best regards,

Mark

I was wondering if someone could help me with this... Recently I noticed that the AES-NI feature of the Core i5-3210M processor in my ThinkPad Edge E430 is not being detected by the operating system. I remember that, when I first got my computer, AES-NI was being recognized by other applications, like CPU-Z and TrueCrypt. However, since then I updated my BIOS to version 2.04, upgraded to Windows 8 and rolled back to 7, only to discover that AES-NI is no longer available. I tried upgrading to BIOS v. 2.08, but that didn't help. I also booted from a Linux live USB, and AES-NI is not detected either. Is there anything I can try? The only thing I can think of is rolling back the BIOS to an old version. Would that be worth the trouble? Or should I just contact Support?

Answer:Scrolling issue on trackpad - Edge E430

Hi, Hariharan

I would firstly make sure that the BIOS have been updated. The computer may be new, but sometimes the latest BIOS is not the one installed at the beginning. You can find the latest BIOS here.

I would then go to the Control Panel and select Mouse. There should be a new window with a tab on the right called UltraNav. I would check the settings of the device here and make sure that everything is set as it should be. This section allows you to configure other actions of the TrackPad, such as scrolling, tapping, swiping, etc.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Hey there guys, I've been having a stack load of trouble with this laptop. I loved it when it was working but the last few months have been incredibly frustrating. It started with the yellow DC in plug slowly breaking, it then wouldn't accept the charger and I couldn't use the laptop. I was busy at the time so sent it away to be repaired, the repair company called me and asked if I also wanted the screen replaced. I was pretty shocked as it was fine before I sent it and I packaged it really really well. I contacted the courier company and they said they'd need to inspect it to see if I can make a claim or not, so I paid the $50 "inspection fee" from the repair company and it was then picked up. I got a call a few days later saying the courier company wouldn't accept fault as they think it was already broken. Which is complete BS. I KNOW it wasn't broken. So they send it back to me. I now am $50 + postage down and have a laptop which needs even more repairs. Fast forward to this week, I end up purchasing a new DC in card and putting that in myself. Put it all back together and everything looks good. Plug in the charger, push power, everything is going good. I can hear the fans spin up, the hard drive spins up, I'm feeling pretty excited (screen is still broken, I wanted to see if it powered up fine before spending money on replacing that). There is nothing at all showing up on the screen, not even back light. I think it may just be the screen so plug in the HDMI... Read more

Answer:thinkpad edge 15 restarting WITHOUT blue screen

Hi, pranavjoshi

I've had a similar problem with a computer in the past, and I know that, in my case, it was normally caused by overheating. Now, that is not to say that overheating is your issue, but I have some questions that should help us understand the problem further:

1) Before the computer shuts down, is the fan spinning fast/loudly?
2) Are there any sounds or any signals that signify the computer is about to shut down, or does it just abruptly happen?
3) Can you remember any programs that you installed or actions you may have taken just before this problem started occuring?
4) What is your machine and model type?

Thanks in advance,
Adam
