Thinkpad edge Screen Problems

Question: Thinkpad edge Screen Problems

Hello . . . I have a Thinkpad Edge (Product ID 0578CT0), and the screen will not display anything. Also, using HDMI output doesn't work. On booting, the laptop screen will "flash" black a couple times, but doesn't display anything. It started a couple of days ago. . . on resume from sleep, the screen would delay in displaying, then you would see a whole bunch of scan lines and "rolling" vertical video, then it would be fine. The last time, however, it never came back. Ideas? Jim

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad edge Screen Problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all, My wife's laptop, e420, has been having issues for the last 3-4 months. It started where she would shut the laptop and it would not go to sleep, the screen would just be black. You would have to hit the power button to wake up. A new issue is that we get the dreaded blue screen. The error shows that there is a problem power management when shutting the laptop. I have tried to debug the dump file with little help and I have updated all the drivers. I have a feeling the power management drivers became corrupt on an update but not sure. Any thoughts? I have updated the bios as well. Thanks!

I'd start by repairing or reinstalling the OS and go from there. Then you'll know wether is hardware or software related.

Hi Everyone! The screen on my 14" Lenovo Thinkpad Edge (TYPE 0199 - 23U) is broken.  My son threw his toy at the screen, while I was taking a final exam, no less.    Anyway, I would like to order a new one, but want to make sure that I choose the correct one.  A factory screen from Lenovo costs more than I paid for the computer, so I've been looking on eBay.  I found this listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400230876522&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:ITIs this the right screen from my computer? Thanks for your help!

I'm looking into buying a new Thinkpad to replace my trustworthy but aging T42. When I look at the various Edge models, I see that there are different types of screens across the 13/14/15 inch models. The 13" Edge page refers to "Glare" HD screens; The 14" Edge page refers to Glossy HD screens; andThe 15" Edge page refers both to "Glare" HD and Anti-Glare HD screens. Is there a difference (other than size) for screens across the 13/14/15 inch model lines? By "Glare" does Lenovo mean "Glossy", or did they just forgot to add "Anti-" before "Glare" I saw the 14" Edge model at Best Buy. The laptop looked nice and functioned well, barring the exceptionally glossy screen. It reflected the store's lights a lot, so I'm doubting it's ability to be a good laptop outdoors. On the bright side, I could probably use it as a mirror in the morning... If the other Edge models have the same screen, I'll consider buying a T410... or another business-line laptop from another manufacturer.

Hi guys,I'd be very grateful if you could help with the following Thinkpad Edge 13 issues:1. Heating. The fan is blowing hot air from the vent on the left. The bottom left of the keyboard also gets very, very hot. How can I cool it down?2. WiFi. The WiFi adapter turns off after the laptop goes to sleep. I think have to run the troubleshoot to restore it again. Very annoying problem - any ideas on a fix?3. Freezing. This might be related to the heat problem, but since I installed a new hdd, the laptop freezes for about 30 seconds before coming back to life again. It seems especially the case when watching video.4. Video. When watching video on VLC, if I jog the laptop only slightly, the video freezes or stutters. I have to keep the laptop perfectly still to avoid this. Is that normal?Any help with this would be much appreciated! Thanks kindly.

What operating system do you use? How did you install the operating system? Did you use recovery media that you have burnt yourself, did you get system restore disks from Lenovo or did you use another method?

Hey guys, I recently bought a Thinkpad Edge 11 and i noticed that the upper part of the screen bezel is seated a bit flimsy. If you slightly tap on the left and right side of the bezel (just left and right from where the webcam is installed) it makes a rattling sound and everytime I open the notebook up you can hear the bezel making a sound as the pressure of the closed lid is taken off of it.It doesn't look like it's falling apart though, I was just wondering about the "flimsyness". Is this something within the normal quality of the Thinkpad Edge or did I get a flawed unit? I really don't want to exchange this thing again, as this is already a replacement machine I got because of a non responsive space bar -.- Best regards

hey!! Well, I guess this reply is a bit late - but my Edge 14 too happens makes the same rattling noise, and I'm now worried because its not just left and right side of the cam but every part of the bezel! I guess that's the normal Edge quality.

Hi! my ThinkPad shows a strange behavior... Suddenly the screen brightness was reduced by the system. Brightness is "15" but it is darker than before. I can not find any option to raise brightness!!!! I am using a Lenovo power supply unit. It is annoying to use the ThinkPad at daylight. Really exhausting looking at a screen thats too dark. Any tips? Regards, nightwatch83

Answer:Screen Brightness (ThinkPad Edge 15)

nightwatch83,

Some basic questions...

If you reboot to windows and are on AC is the screen still dim?   Does it respond at all to screen brightness increase / decrease settings?

If you restart and go into BIOS on AC, how bright is the display?  Any different than in Windows?

If the problem seems isolated in Windows, I would reload the power manager and hotkey drivers and recheck the settings in power manager for screen brightness.

Best regards,

Mark

I bought a ThinkPad Edge 14 running Win7 pro about 9 months ago and it had been working fine.  A couple of weeks ago, I started having issues where the screen would go blank at random.  Windows and any software I had running kept running fine until the screen would come back on.  It did not matter if my power cord was plugged in or if I were on battery.  Reading previous threads, I did switch my refresh rate to 50Hz but this did not really help.  Now the problem has gotten worse.  The screen not only goes blank but also sets me back to the login screen.  Sometimes, I don't have enough time to even login before the screen goes blank.  Yesterday, it was bad enough that I got the following messages:  "Interactive logon process has failed.  Please see event log." Event Log Entries:"The winlogon notification subscriber GPClient was unavailable to handle a notification event.""The winlogon notification subscriber SessionEnv was unavailable to handle a notification event.""The winlogon notification subscriber Sens was unavailable to handle a notification event." The machine tried Startup Repair a couple of times and it seemed to work once but then the screen went blank again. It is also worth mentioning that, as of yesterday, two new events happened: 1.  I noticed that if the laptop went blank awhile, then I could hold "Fn" and it the login screen would appear briefly.2.  Sometimes, i... Hello.I recently ordered the Thinkpad Edge E531. My friend ordered it before me and hers arrived in the mail already. I had previously read online that this computer had an optional touch screen, however, when I saw my friend's it wasn't a touch screen. I'm wondering if there's a way to turn this on or if the computer is not actually a touch screen. Thanks.

I recently bought a Thinkpad Edge 15 with the ATI graphics card, i5-560, 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HDD. Everything is perfect apart from the screen resolution. The screen looks good, but i can do with a better resolution that 1366x768. So i was just wondering if there is a way i can upgrade the screen by the official lenovo channels, maybe take my laptop to a lenovo service centre nearby and they can replace the screen.

Answer:Upgrading the Thinkpad Edge Screen

all of the screens on all of the edge models have 1366x768.  the only choices are between glossy and matte.

these may help you to source a panel and other needed parts.

I'm looking at the new Thinkpad Edge 431 and have been hearing about the fan problems in the E430/530 series. Does anyone around here happen to have one of the new ones or can anyone find a review of the E431? Is the fan problem solved or is it still around? If it was, it would be quite the dealbreaker.

Dear Lenovo, I have started using ThinkPad Edge E440's and E540's in my company last year (June 2014) and have now been experiencing several horrible issues: 1. The default Windows 7 OS that came with the laptop gets corrupted when you install updates from Microsoft. This will hang after the initial restart and then will never boot again to windows not to mention 4 BSOD's before it gets totally corrupted, to a point that not even safe mode can boot into. if I do not update the OS from MS Updates, it will be working, but dead slow. I have 2 i7 8GB 1TB configuration and honest to goodness opinion my Core2Quad beats them hands down in performance.  2. The issue above will then have to be reformatted hence i have no recovery disks of Windows 7 so i have to use the Windows 8.1 recovery discs. which is a terrible OS and is not being used in our corporate setup. so then i have to use one of our licenses and this wastes our licenses because we originally ordered these laptops with windows 7. but then the same issue occurs with it hanging constantly and not able to connect to the wifi and BSOD's all around 3. After i have installed and updated windows 8.1, i will then update the drivers, and then will have to update the BIOS to 2.18 and then Wi-Fi will not work with the drivers that are found from your support site. you can only use WiFi again if you download the drivers from Intel or Realtek. 4. Suddenly my USB ports started disconnecting and reconnectin... Read more

I was looking into buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. I initially preferred E530 (model# 62724GU) over the idepads (such as model P500) with better configurations for over a hundred and fifty dollars less only because it had thinkpad in its name.  However, I am seeing so many complaints (such as fan issues, battery drain) for E530, I am not sure if bought one it would not have defects. Has anyone got a defect free E530? What is the average battery drain time on both E530 and P500 on moderate to heavy load?

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 and it was working fine until today. Today I worked on the laptop as usual and just turned off the Fast Startup setting in the Windows 8 and then restarted the computer. Now it only shows a black screen (LCD backlights are on but there is nothing on the screen). I hear the usual BIOS beep sound but I can't see the BIOS screen or the Windows. I've tried to connect to a an external monitor via HDMI. Amazingly, both my laptop's screen and external monitor works fine when the laptop is connected to the external screen. But when I disconnect them, again I can only see the black screen. I turned on the Fast Startup settings in Windows 8, but it didn't work. Then I loaded the default settings from the BIOS and it didn't worked too. Finally I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS to test if it is because of the operating system but it didn't help too. I've tried all of this using the laptop's screen while it was connected to the external screen. It is very confusing for me. It seems like the screen is only working when an external screen is also connected to the laptop. I would be very happy if anyone can help me about this problem.

I'm trying to restore the default installation of Windows 7 and restore partition to my Thinkpad Edge 13.  After I bought the laptop, I created a backup image of both C and the restore partition to a USB thumbdrive I have (8GB).  I saved that thumbdrive to an image for later use (MD5 and all so I knew it was good). Anyways, I reformatted the entire HD and installed linux.  I've been using that for a while, but I'd like to restore windows back, so I got out my 8GB usb thumb drive, reloaded the image I had saved off before and booted my ThinkPad Edge 13 with the usb thumb drive. It loaded up just fine and asked me if I wanted to restore just C, or C and the backup partition (everything), I said Everything and off it went without warning.  After successfully completing it told me to remove all devices and it would reboot. It did that and came up like it was about to start booting windows (staring windows), just as the swirly balls start to form the windows logo, it blue screened.  It rebooted and immediately goes to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen giving me options to "Start Windows Normally" or the various safe mode options.  None of the options on this screen help.  It always gets semi into booting windows than blue screens. Now, I've verified that the img I loaded onto the USB checked out MD5, and I've put it onto the USB drive and flashed the laptop twice, so I know the data is correct.  Still for some reason, I... Answer:Blue Screen when restoring Thinkpad Edge 13

On your original installation, there should have been a small partition, 100mb, that contained windows 7 boot files.  That might not have gone over to your image. In windows 7, in control panel, backup and restore, there's an option to make a system repair disc and a system image.  You could've used the system repair disc to restore the boot files. If you don't have that, you could use a windows 7 retail disc to get to the repair console or if you know of somebody that has windows 7 that could burn you a copy of the repair disc, that would work also. That system repair disc will work on any version of windows 7 and it can be taken from any machine, doesn't matter what make.  I tested mine on various installations of windows 7 and it worked on every one.

Hey there guys, I've been having a stack load of trouble with this laptop. I loved it when it was working but the last few months have been incredibly frustrating. It started with the yellow DC in plug slowly breaking, it then wouldn't accept the charger and I couldn't use the laptop. I was busy at the time so sent it away to be repaired, the repair company called me and asked if I also wanted the screen replaced. I was pretty shocked as it was fine before I sent it and I packaged it really really well. I contacted the courier company and they said they'd need to inspect it to see if I can make a claim or not, so I paid the $50 "inspection fee" from the repair company and it was then picked up. I got a call a few days later saying the courier company wouldn't accept fault as they think it was already broken. Which is complete BS. I KNOW it wasn't broken. So they send it back to me. I now am $50 + postage down and have a laptop which needs even more repairs. Fast forward to this week, I end up purchasing a new DC in card and putting that in myself. Put it all back together and everything looks good. Plug in the charger, push power, everything is going good. I can hear the fans spin up, the hard drive spins up, I'm feeling pretty excited (screen is still broken, I wanted to see if it powered up fine before spending money on replacing that). There is nothing at all showing up on the screen, not even back light. I think it may just be the screen so plug in the HDMI... Read more

Hello everyone. I'm having problems with my edge E330. It's been working like a charm for 2.5 years. One day I had it connected to external TV, and closed the lid, without turning off. It went into hibernation, and since that, only ext. monitor worked. After a few attempts of changing startup settings, it's now completely black on both screens(failure!). I've managed to save files via the SystemRescueCD (thx, linux!), but windows or even BIOS won't load, it seems. The machine powers up, and then it's stuck. The internal monitor seems physically broken, but I can't be 100% sure of that. Anyone experienced a similar situation, or has any clue what to do? Should I try to replace the screen, or maybe the hd first, to check if the monitor actually works? Thx in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E330 black screen

Hi Davidb1,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Is there any LED indication on the system, have you checked performing power drain?

If you have not, then please follow the steps, remove AC adapter and the battery from the system. Press and hold power button for 15 to 20 seconds and release. Perform this steps 2 to 3 times and after that connect only AC adapter and try switching ON the system.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Answer:thinkpad edge 15 restarting WITHOUT blue screen

Hi, pranavjoshi

I've had a similar problem with a computer in the past, and I know that, in my case, it was normally caused by overheating. Now, that is not to say that overheating is your issue, but I have some questions that should help us understand the problem further:

1) Before the computer shuts down, is the fan spinning fast/loudly?
2) Are there any sounds or any signals that signify the computer is about to shut down, or does it just abruptly happen?
3) Can you remember any programs that you installed or actions you may have taken just before this problem started occuring?
4) What is your machine and model type?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Hi  For about 3 weekI have been using and enjoying my new Edge S430. But I have some problems, questions: 1) I found out that i have a SSD caching disk, but it wasn't specified in the specs from the company where I bought it, no can I find much about it on the official Lenovo site. That's more of a pleasant surprise but looking in taskmanager I see that the disk isnt used at all! Anyone know what to do about it? 2)When starting taskmanager it sometimes takes up to 3 min(!) to start it and display info... 3)Sometimes when plugged in and sometimes when not, the S430 wont go to sleep (i did check the settings, all is normal). 4)When waking the realtech headphone driver isn't enabled and plugging in the headphones wont make the speakers go mute. 5)How do I disable the screen (make it go black?) I would be grateful if some of my issues are fixed/explained. Many thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge S430 questions/problems

are you using the preinstalled windows 7 / 8 ? 1.) i don't know windows 8, but can you see the free space of a disk in the taskmanager? anyways here is how to check if the cache is active - open start menu - search for "cmd" - rightclick run as admin - enter "eccmd -info" post results 2.) that is very weird, never heard of that 5.) maybe there is a hotkey for the S430, elsewhise you can rightclick the power manager applet (if installed) -> turn screen off immediately. otherwise there are alternative programms that can do this for you hope i could help

Hello! I hope you can help me. I have some problems with my Lenovo e125 thinkpad. My BIOS version is the latest (1.17) I've set the power button to sleep, and disabled the lid closing action. The first problem is, when I push the sleep button, and then close the lid, and I open it again, the computer doesn't wake up. But sometimes yes. The another (and more annoying) problem is, somethimes when I push the power button (what has set to sleep), the notebook competely restarts. My drivers are the latest, I've installed the latest AMD e450 driver from the AMD site. I hope you can help me! Thank you!

Hey. I just got my Lenovo ThinkPad EDGE E330 for about 2 days. I started the system normally and I just downloaded Google Chrome, Dropbox and Adobe Reader. Now my problem is. Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E520 Graphic Problems

I had the same problem with my E420s. For me it was resolved by updating to the newest graphics driver. Do you have the version with the 6630M? If yes, follow the explanations in post #42 here: http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2057776037?page=3

Hello, I am looking for a little bit of help. I have a Lenovo Edge 15 0319-46U laptop I recieved from my educational institution. I have had the laptop since fall of 2012. I've never had a single issue with the laptop except a month ago I noticed my wireless 1x1 b/g/n card stopped working. I'm well knoledged in computers and have already tried updating the drivers but I ran into an issue. My wireless card is no longer being shown on the Device Manager list under Network Adapters or "Unknown Devices", I only see my Wired gigabit card. I went into Bios, checked the button (did all the begginer stuff) and no dice. Wireless still does not work. I went ahead and ordered a new Intel Wireless card for said laptop and made sure the interface worked correctly, so my question is does anyone know of any fixes that could work even if the adapter is not shown on anywhere in the computer? And would anyone know if the Intel 7260-HMWNBWB Dual band card would be compatible with this machine? Thanks in advance for an answer.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 0319-46U wireless problems

Hello and welcome,

The ThinkPad BIOS has a wifi whitelist.  A card has to be a whitelisted model and have a Lenovo FRU number or the laptop will refuse to boot.  Generic cards - even with the correct model number - won't boot on an unmodified BIOS.

Page 113 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual  lists the compatible models and FRU numbers.

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

I've got an E430 with 16gb ssd drive, and tried to use expresscache to speed up my computer.I used "eccmd.exe -info" to check out how it works and here is the result.Mounted : YesPartition Size : 14.91 GBReserved Size : 3.00 MBVolume Size : 14.91 GBTotal Used Size : 3.74 GBTotal Free Space : 11.17 GBUsed Data Size : 3.67 GBUsed Data Size on Disk : 3.74 GBAs you can see,now the "total used size" is 3.74GB which indicates that the cache has benn stored on the sdd drive. But every time I shut the computer down, and restart it, check the status, the "total used size"just return to about 300MB(maybe even lower), I wonder is this how it supposed to work like? Or this software  just doesn't function correctly on my computer, and if it does is malfunctioned, what I'm I supposed to do to fix it? Thank you...

Oh,and here is another thing that I noticed. A couple of days ago, I deleted the hibernation partition on my SSD drive because it takes up 8gb of storage, and seldom do I use hibernation. But I noticed that after I deleted the partition, my computer's boot up time seems to be slower than before, does that partition has some thing to do with boot up time?

I've noticed I've had this problem for a while now where when I'm charging the laptop all of a sudden the CPU useage goes sky high to 80/90% when all I'm doing is using the internet or skype (especially when using skype). I take the charger out and then everything returns to normal. This only happens sometimes when charging, not the all the time which is odd.. Anyone got any ideas?

Hello, I have seen various posts about similar problems, though not on Edge E130. Tried their solutions, to no avail. The screen is black. No faint image. Machine powers up (LEDs glow, noise of fan and hard disk). I have no external video connection. Have tried taking battery out, pressing on button for 1 minute, plugging machine to power (no battery) and restart. No success. Did not initiate any kind of update (certainly not BIOS!), upgrade or new software install (though the machine has been asking to upgrade to Windows 10, which I have not done yet). Running Windows 8.1 (as far as I can remember, as I cannot actually check - the screen is black).  AVG antivirus, updated and fully run about one week ago. Help? Please?

Hi, The screen on my my Edge 420 has gone really dark to the point where I need to shine a light onto it to be able to see anything (only just). I hadn`t changed anything before this occured. The computer works fine connected to my TV using that as the monitor. I`ve done some searching on this forum and tried the following to no avail:- Restart with power unplugged- Restart with power plugged in but no battery.- Held down the power button for several 1 minute intervals with the power adapter + battery out.- Using TV as the monitor: Adjusted brightness settings to maximum in Control Panel (Power Options)- Within Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel: Unticked Image Enhancement (Auto Adjust) plus unticked Film Mode Detection plus unticked Display Power Saving Technology.- Checked my Intel Graphics driver was up-to-date. I`m not great with computers but now suspect a faulty screen inverter or a motherboard problem. Pretty annoyed that this has happed to an 18 month old machine which rarely leaves my desk at home. My previous Thinkpad lasted 6 years which is why I bought this one. Could anyone suggest any other things I could try or direct me to a cost effective way to have it professionally repared? Thankyou,Roger

Two days ago my wife's laptop gave up, apparently. On startup the red led lights up and the fan starts. After 10-12 seconds the fan revs up to maximum and stays that way. There's not even a flickering on the screen. I've tried everything I can think of. Connected external display, vga and hdmi and there's nothing on them. Tried to boot to a Windows install DVD but that doesn't work. Tried to remove , reinstall DIMM's. I've had the HDD out and connected to another computer and it seems ok. Checked the LCD connectors and they seem ok too. There's no responsewhen pressing F2 or any other key on startup. Any ideas appreciated! Best regards,Per

I?m sorry to hear that there is no display in your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15.

I would like to thank you for all the efforts you have done to fix the issue on your own.

I suggest you to perform Flee Power as well and check. Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Please let me know the happenings!

Hi as you can see in the image my thinkpad edge e530 laptop has started showing this multicolored dotted vertical line on lcd. I checked external monitor and the line doesn't show. so it must be problem with lcd. has anyone got this problem before and can someone advise me what should i do about it.

Answer:Thinkpad edge e530 screen has vertical line

Does squeezing the LCD bezel above or below the line cause the line to change? If so, it's possibly a damaged LCD panel. Otherwise it's possibly a bad cable.

Hello! So I have a Lenovo laptop Thinkpad Edge E430. AVG Safe Search wanted to restart the laptop (I can't remember why, but probably just to make sure everything was okay).I did, and now when I turn the computer on normally, I get nothing but a black screen with a mouse, instead of the user icons.I can run it in Safe Mode, but I'd really like to be able to use my laptop normally, since a lot of things don't work in Safe Mode.Any ideas?(Thank you so much!!)

The line in questionThis started showing up on my screen last week, and I'm not sure why. I've had it since mid 2015.The screen itself hasn't taken external frontal damage (save for light rain drops), and I've rebooted the computer numerous times. More vertical lines have appeared on screen over the past two days, but the line highlighted is both the original and the most consistent.I've been searching the forums for something to help and I'm lost on what's happening. Do I need to get a replacement screen, or are there a few ways to troubleshoot? If it helps at all, the vertical line pops up after I initially boot up the main screen. There's no problem when entering the password to log in, but the line appears on my desktop. Thank you all for your time, and hopefully I can clear this up soon!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 80H1 Vertical Lines on Screen

Hi CHA_Charger,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you are facing issue related to LCD panel in which vertical lines are appearing.
I'll suggest you to check system in BIOS mode whether issue persists there or not.
Also try to move the LCD lid at different angle & see if issue reoccurs and update us how it goes.

Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Ok so today I turned on my laptop and everything seemed fine, regular starting up windows message appeared but after that, what usually should've been the login screen, was replaced by a black screen. I could move my mouse pointer but that was about it, It wouldn't load the login scren. I booted up safe mode and login screen came up fine. Now before you link me to a solution and brush me off, I tried alot of things on my own. I deleted AMD Radeon HD and nothing changed. I did a system restore and nothing. Ok so maybe thats not alot of things, but that was all I could think of. Any help would be apreciated. Thank you.

What happens if you connect an external monitor to the machine? If that works, it means your graphics card is still okay. So issue might be with the LCD or a BIOS setting (external display first)If you still have a black screen you may likely need motherboard replacement.

Here we've got a Thinkpad Edge E531. Sometimes something happens (idk what) and the screeen shows white noise (as shown in the picture) instead of what it has to show. If I suspend the laptop and then resume back, most of the time it'll be ok (some cases were reported that it didn't work too, I think so, my sister said) and it happens regardless of the OS type. Tried Arch Linux, Ubuntu and Windows 7. happens on all of them. of course I found another solution to solve the problem on linux, but I'm not sure, maybe by changing the tty by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2.  It doesn't happen frequently, but occasionally. I mean it may not happen during 2 weeks but suddenly 6 times in 24h.  Picture: http://oi62.tinypic.com/20t5dtj.jpgA newer one: http://oi58.tinypic.com/331dqph.jpg Any idea what the problem is?

Hello all, apologies if this is a duplicate issue, but my searches did not turn anything up. I just received my new TPY a couple of days ago and have been happily installing software. Today was the first time I really tried using my digitizer pen, as I finally had time to open Photoshop and Illustrator. In doing so, however, I discovered pen calibration is completely messed up for the top edge of the screen. I tested it outside of the Adobe programs and the same problems occur there. I have already gone in and tried recalibrating my pen more than once using the calibration tools in the Control Panel. Is this a known issue that I just need a driver update for or is this a hardware issue? Any help is appreciated. Thanks,Erika

Answer:ThinkPad Edge stuck at boot screen after restore

Hey there ellenc and welcome to the forums,

There are a few things that we should take a look at, and we'll need some more information to figure out exactly what we are looking at. What operating system(OS) and machine type and model number are using? This can be found on the stick on the bottom of the laptop, and occasionally in the battery compartment of the laptop.

What you are seeing is that the boot loader that takes the machine from BIOS to the Operating System cannot locate your hard drive for some reason. Have you by chance removed the hard drive and placed it back in? It simply could just not be seated properly.

We will need to check to see if your BIOS sees the hard drive at all. When you start the computer hit the appropriate F# key or enter to interrupt startup and take you to BIOS. Once in BIOS, use your directional keys to move back and forth through the menus. You will want to move over to startup, and move down and open up 'Boot' by pressing enter once over the selection. There should be a list on this page that includes either a ATA HDD or SSD. If you are able, take a picture of this and post so that we can see exactly what you are looking at.

Thanks ellenc.

It seems at the time a couple of weeks ago after Google changed their logo  with the paintbrush, my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 LCD screen started showing some small green lines in the middle upper part of the screen.  They seem to be spreading a little and are now about one half inch by one half inch.   When it boots up and the Microsoft logo comes on and most of the screen is black, I don't see the green lines.  I can see the cursur continually when I move it across the green lines.    Do I need a new screen?   Any other suggestions?   Thank you.

Hello,
My Lenovo Thinkpad E540 (Model: 20C6008QUS) shipped yesterday and during configuring it for the first time , I found a strange problem (and it was during the first few hours after unboxing). I started experiencing a weird white (or gray) rectangular box on the top-left corner of the desktop and I have no idea where it was originated from (snapshot attached).
The box doesn't show up at the startup but whenever I logon to the windows after sleep or hibernation this box pops up. This box is just blocking all the icons below it and it is very much annoying.

Can anyone please help me out by providing any kind of solution with it ?

Thanks in advance.

I just bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E440 about 2 months ago and now I have this vertical line at the middle of my screen. My ThinkPad Edge E535's screen is either black upon start up (though it does light up) or shows static. I have tried restarting it several times, including restarting it plugged in with the battery out. I have also tried hooking it up to an external monitior through an HDMI cable, but the monitor told us that the laptop isn't giving a signal (though the monitior knows it is plugged into something).

I've updated my drivers recently trying to get other games to work, so it's not an issue with them not being up-to-date.  And that's about as far as my computer knowledge goes in this area.  Posting my DxDiag in a comment. Edit: WOW.  I do not remember that being that long.

Hi guys. I bought a Thinkpad Edge E520 a while ago. It's a great piece of kit but I feel it's let down by the screen. The viewing angles are very bad as is the contrast. Is it possible to swap out the screen for a more high end one? I don't want to use an external monitor, oh and the screen is matte which is fine...it's just the atrocious viewing angles and sub par contrast.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520 Screen Viewing Angle

You may or may not be able to shim in the 15.6" 1920x1080 panel from the T520/W520.Of course, it'd void your warranty. There are some color calibration tricks you can use so they'll appear to shift less as the viewer moves off angle. (Crushing the lighter colors may work, at a loss of contrast.)

I've been noticing a millisecond-long horizontal flicker on my screen while playing videos on youtube for a day or two. Yesterday it did it one more time and now it's on all the time. Here's a photo of it: http://i39.tinypic.com/25jxmh1.jpg note that this is one line written in black colour on a white background. I haven't dropped or hit it. It's out of warranty so I could open it if necessary. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 14 horizontal green/pink screen flicker

Does it occur on external LCD? Does pushing on the back of the LCD change the behaviour? This is usually the LCD panel, cable or the GPU or motherboard related. Cable is the cheapest and easiest to check, followed by change of LCD panel, the GPU would mean change of motherboard, which can be expensive. Here is the hardware manual that shows you how to open up the laptop screen. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-75051

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

Heya all, I've been given a ThinkPad Edge E320 to troubleshoot/keep/scrap for parts, or any combination of the above. What the issue is that the internal screen doesn't initialise (the backlight lights, but no information on screen - not even the Lenovo boot logo), but the system still seems to boot alright.I've found that if I remove the yellow CMOS battery and let the system sit to drain, the internal LCD panel works just fine, and if you leave the CMOS battery unplugged it continues to work fine. However as soon as you plug in the CMOS battery and save the configuration, the problem starts again. Hooking up an external monitor and pressing Fn-F6 shortly after turning it on makes it work fine on the external display, so I'm confident the system board itself is (mostly) fine, and that it's some invalid data in the CMOS that's causing the system to ignore the internal display, or at least not send any data to it.Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried different CMOS batteries (I have a few with the same connector from some old X60s and T60s I've scrapped for parts) and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've also tried updating the BIOS to the latest version in one of the times I was able to get it to boot fine. Also tried clearing the CMOS settings, checking that "ThinkPad LCD" is the selected startup display, etc. This system only has integrated graphics, no discrete video or switchable graphics.Another thing I've checked for are loose LCD connections (on both s... Hi, I have a ThinkPad Edge 520, type 1143-B5G with a clean disk and I need to install Windows XP on it, for legacy reasons. I have read about the Intel Rapid Store Technology driver being necessary, but this does not seem to apply to the 520, only to 220 and 420. The settings recommended are not available on the 520 (nor is the driver itself), and the driver is listed as N/A for the 520 in the Lenovo list of drivers. But, I still get a BSOD error just as Windows is about to start from the installation DVD, after the DVD has loaded all the drivers it can think of. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Btw - would it be possible to install XP in a separate, primary partition alongside Windows 7, on a disk that already has Windows 7 on it? Or is a clean disk necessary for this? Kind regards,/EvA

Answer:Blue screen when trying to install Windows XP on Intel-based ThinkPad Edge 520

Hello and welcome,

What settings are you looking for?  It sounds like this is a problem with HD operating mode.  Does the E520 BIOS have an option to change the SATA mode to compatibility instead of AHCI?  You won't be able to install a "vanilla" version of XP without adding the appropriate AHCI driver or switching to compatibility mode.

What BIOS version do you have?  I see this rather cryptic reference in the 1.20 BIOS:

" [Problem fixes] Fix an issue of read/write data on SATA compatibility mode."

It is possible to dual-boot XP and '7, but the easiest way to do that is to install XP first, and then let the 7 installer set up the dual-boot configuration.  You would still have the AHCI vs compatibility (IDE) mode problem.

Ah, lookinng a little deeper, there is an AHCI driver for XP in the Lenovo driver matrix.  The readme includes instructions on how to install.

Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver for Windows
README for Intel SATA Controller AHCI Driver for Windows

Maybe that will get you going.

I read through the manual and am confident that I can take apart the machine, replace the cracked screen and put it back together. I replaced hinges in my old HP and a motherboard in my friends HP. My father was able to get me a great deal on this machine I have now. I put in some extra ram and a 32gb SSD for RapidBoot and I'm pretty much in love. I take great care of it but had an accident and dropped/cracked the screen.

The laptop was ordered custom so its a bit more of a challenge to find specific information on what the part #'s are. The laptop has working microphones but was not purchased with a webcam which I regret. I would like to replace the LCD panel and install an integrated camera in one fell swoop.

My questions are: What model number of LCD panel so I need. What model number of camera do I need. And lastly, will I need to purchase a new LCD cable that has the ability to plug into the camera? Or does my current LCD cable have a lone male cable plug waiting for a camera?

Machine Type: 3254
Serial #: xxxxxxx
CPU: i5-3210
HDD: 7200rpm 320gb
Came with 4gb of RAM

Thanks so much! Any advice here would be appreciated

I have upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 to Windows 10 recently and since then I have been having increasing problems to connect to WiFi. It is not a problem with the WiFi itself, since I can connect with my phone and tablet without any problems and my husband has not had any problems with his laptop either. It started with just having to try to connect a couple of times (clicking disconnect and then connect again) in the beginning. Then it took restarting the computer. And now I can't connect anymore no matter how often I try or whatever I try. Initially I got an error message regarding the IP address when using the troubleshoot, but now it just can't find the problem. I have read that it could be a problem with the WiFi driver, which may need an update for Windows 10. The driver listed is Realtek RTL8188E LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have not been able to find this driver or any update for it on the Realtek website. I have not been able to find anything on the Lenovo or Windows website, or anywhere else for that matter, either. I have read posts by other users who are having similar issues, but I haven't been able to find a solution. Please let me know how I can solve this problem. Thank you.

Dear KVW,

Welcome in lenovo community,
Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the E545 laptop yet,
So you may go back to the previous windows and wait till lenovo release all the drivers.
Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update,

Repeated crashes leading to black screen, perhaps graphics problem? In the past three days I have had three fairly similar crashes ? pattern as follows:I leave the screen with eg Windows Live Mail and Internet Explorer 11 open but usually  minimised to the taskbar, for about 20-30 minutes.  The first and third time ?Standby? was set to ?Never?, the second time I?d left it with lid closed manually to Standby.  Each time, on return it seems OK, but as I revisit those windows the cursor starts behaving erratically, while the busy wheel turns constantly, and the programs stop responding.   Today the minimised IE refused to re-open at first, as did Windows Explorer. Once  I managed to get Task Manager up from the Taskbar very slowly, but its window was blank.    Ctrl-alt-delete doesn?t work. The Start button either freezes altogether or responds very slowly, and ?Shut down? just hangs on a black screen partly backlit. The first time there was a message: ?Failure to display security and shut-down options?, followed eventually by an entirely black screen, but power light remained on.  The second time the black screen appeared suddenly before I could try to shut down. The third time after a while the busy wheel stopped and I tried to open Event Viewer but it didn?t open, Internet Explorer gradually opened and then froze.  Start-shutdown led to a backlit black screen with a fragment of the language bar... My computer has been crashing a lot, which i think is a hardware issue, that is not for this post, but i right now, need assistance, after using my pc in the morning, turning it off, then when i come back, i turn it on, shows the logo, then a dark screen, forever, atleast how long i have waited. I have tried resetting bios, moving ram sticks, messing with BIOS, running hardware checks and software, startup repair says that the laptop boots up, and find no problems, but it doesnt let me do a windows memory diagnostic, i may provide extra information if needed, and i do not know if any more is required, and please do help me, i cannot do anything on my pc until it is fixed

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing 25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.
