Preferred Solution: E540 After BIOS update the computer wont start

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: E540 After BIOS update the computer wont start

If these long boot symptoms, following the BIOS update occur, multiple customers have reported success in resolving them by disabling Intel AMT and setting the security chip, TPM, as active in the BIOS. Steps to disable Intel AMT and enable TPM settings as below. Boot into BIOSSelect ConfigSelect Intel AMTPress Enter key on Intel AMT Control and select DisablePress ESC twiceSelect SecuritySelect Security chip and select EnablePress F10 and click Yes.

Hello P1, welcome to the community,
clearly something is not right, have you called support to request assistance?  The phone number for support in South Africa is 0800-110-756; they are reachable 09:00 - 18:00  Monday - Friday.
That said, something you could try is to reset the system.  Remove the power cord and removable battery.  On the underside of the system is a reset hole, (Nr. 5 in the below illustration), insert a straightened paper clip and hold the reset button depressed for 3 seconds.  Once you have completed this please attach the power cord and see if the system starts normally.

Please let us know the outcome.

I have just updated my BIOS from 2.10 to 2.20 to try to overcome an overheating problem with Linux.
On rebooting the laptop XP will not start. I get the XP screen for a few seconds then the blue scrren of death flashes up beofre the laptop reboots. The blue screen is so quick it doesn't finish writing up the text - so I cannot see any numbers to check the error.

If I select Linux Mint from my GRUB screen the laptop starts correctly. I can also see the Windows partitions. I have tried to boot from an XP disc to run CHKDSK but I get to the stage where it says it is inspecting my configuration then hangs on a black / blank screen and just sits there.

Any ideas? Is it possible to roll back the BIOS?

Answer:Xp wont start after BIOS update on Satellite L

> Is it possible to roll back the BIOS?

Yes, you can downgrade (rollback) if you have made a backup.

Can you enter the Bios and check if compatible mode enabled (after Bios update, it could put AHCI by default)?

Hi! I recently bought an Lenovo E540.Most of the time it works great, whenever it decides to start that is... Sometimes when I try to turn it on, the red dot over the Thinkpad sign lights up, but screen stays black. What I have to do to fix this problem is to take out the BIOS Battery/CMOS Battery, which seems to fix the problem... I have done the latest BIOS Update, but this did not fix the problem... Does anyone else have this problem? Warranty has expired, so I cant return it to Lenovo... Ideas anyone?

I have bought my wife a Toshiba L300-20D ( PSLB8E-0CK00YEN ). It came with Vista loaded which she cannot get on with.

My grandson offerred to sort it out. He fitted a new hard drive, loaded it with XP and managed to get nearly all the drivers working with the exception of the WiFi .

After spending many hours he decided to update the bios from v1.8 to v1.9. Since then it wont start.. It comes up with the Toshba screen, Start windows normally, it then tries to load windows, flashes and starts the cycle al over.

He has tried the default settings, tried an XP disc, setting it to start on disc, nothing. It does just the same in safe mode.

Any suggestions will be appreciated

Answer:Satellite L300-20D - After BIOS update it wont start now

Did you set the SATA Mode to "Compatibility" when installing XP? (You would see a BSOD with the code 0x0000007B - if Automatic Restart is disabled from the Windows boot menu)

The BIOS update would have reset it back to SATA AHCI Mode. So set it to Compatibility again.

If that doesn't work, try a System Restore in Safe Mode to return the registry back to a previous date.

This forum was GREAT help when I encountered the not-rebooting properly problem after installing the Lenovo Small Business stuff - initially I was having to disconnect the CMOS battery each reboot, but after uninstalling that software, things seemed to work again. Latest wrinkle - I suspect connected - is that the BIOS update from 1.58 to 1.61 won't work. I tried it the automatic way from the Lenovo Tools and the PC just hung on the Thinkpad screen when trying to reboot. Pressing the power button turned the red LED light off and caused it two beep twice (deep-sounding beeps), so forced it to power down by holding power switch. The system would then boot OK (still on BIOS 1.58 though). Subsequently tried from the Lenovo website to create a bootable DVD to update the BIOS. Although the system tried to boot from the DVD, I got a couple of error messages telling me that it could not control A20, then XMS Driver not installed, followed by RAMDrive Extended Memory not present, HMA not available: loading DOS low, and then Bad command or filename, before giving me the DOS prompt. Clearly this wasn't working. Tried to update by downloading the BIOS update exe file from the website, and got the same result as with the automatic tools I first tried. Anyone with any ideas as to how to get around this? Would be really grateful! RegardsGuy P.S. I must say that I'm really disappointed with Lenovo quality control this time. I've been a loyal Thinkpad user for ma... Read more

Hi all, caused by the E540 Power issue (see other message) I tried to flash the BIOS from v1.61 to the latest on v2.07. No matter if I was using the Windows utility or the boot CD - the BIOS update failed ALWAYS with the same error message: ERROR 216 - Failed to read BIOS from ROM! Status = 1501. Does anyone have seen the same behaviour on the E540 too? Regards,Bent

Answer:E540 BIOS Update fails

Hi Speedb76,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with BIOS update on ThinkPad E540.
As per the error message it might be related to Memory, so I am suggesting you to check if the system is having dual memory, or check with replacing with memory.
Hope this helps.

I posted this in the hardware section because i know its gotta be hardware related. On one of my older computers, which is a HP(bought in 2002), wont start at all. Not even the Compaq logo will display, which means BIOS wont start either. so i cant boot at all, or operate the computer in anyway. This happened right after i installed a gig of RAM, i was upgrading from 512 mb to 1 gig, they were 2 different cards, 512 each, and both had 189 pins. I installed them, booted up and nothing.

I really dint think there is a solution for this though, because after that, i put the 512 RAM back in and it still didnt work. Im thinking the motherboard was fried, by static electricity maybe. if thats the case than ill just get a new computer. which leads me to my next question.
How do i access my Harddrive? I have a lot of valuable data on there and an expensive music collection, as well as a bounch of backed up movies.
Any help is really appreciated guys, thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm trying to update my BIOS because of the security alert (Lenovo Security Advisory: LEN-17297) following the major Intel ME vulnerability, but strangely enough the ThinkPad Edge 540 is missing in the long long list of affected and not affected Lenovo products. The Intel diagnose tool ( says the laptop is vulnerable and should be updated. But the product page has one only from September, so it does not cover this vulnerability. I can't be the only one still using the E540 - does anyone know where I find a new firmware update OR if there is a firmware update for another modell which can/should be used?  Thanks for any help! Unfortunately all versions of the BIOS available from Lenovo's site have a bug that doesn't play well with linux. The workaround is to turn OFF USB 3.0 in the BIOS settings. (You can still use the USB ports, just not as USB 3.0.)
Here's a posting with more links if you would like to learn more.
As for updating the BIOS, maybe one could get the updater to work using FreeDOS bootable image, or more likely a linux image with WINE on it... ?
On my new E540 I "cheated" by keeping Windows 7 cluttering up my hard drive for awhile. I have booted Windows only twice, and I NEVER let it connect to the Internet, but I downloaded the .exe version of the BIOS updater and ran it from a USB stick. (It runs as a Windows software installer, which is odd to me.)

Answer:Re: E540 bios update to 2.17 fails, the system program file was not found

The non-stop fan is killing me (and the fan itself obviously). I had bios 1.58 and I tried to update to the latest 2.17 (bootable CD) but in the update program I got: ErrorThe system program file was not found on the CD. Insert the correct CD in the drive. I tried to set bios defaults and everything and burned new CD.. nothing. I tried to make gradual upgrade by upgrading to 2.07 and some others but they just booted to some weird DOS like environment. No bonus. Finally I ended up trying 2.16 bootable CD and it worked!... but I need the latest. Tried to download the .iso again, burned and same problem. Any help? How others have got this done? I run Linux Mint 17.1 but it should not make difference.

I have a laptop that's only about 5 months old and runs Windows 8. When I had to pack it up to go, I went to shut it down, and it started doing the windows update. I closed the laptop, packed it up, and left. When I start it back up, I see a screen with two options: Troubleshoot and Power off your PC. When I click trouble shoot, this is what I see:
Refresh your PC, and Reset your PC, Advanced options.

When I click refresh my PC, it says "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again.
When I click reset, it says, "Unable to reset PC. A required drive partition is missing."
When I click advanced options, this is the screen.

Sorry for the bad picture. The four options are:
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Automatic Repair
Command Prompt

When I click System restore, it says I need to restart the PC, and select an OS and then select system restore, but I have no clue how to do that.
SIR says "The system cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)
Auto Repair says that it cannot fix my PC. No reason why.

If you need anymore information, just ask. Thanks for any help.

Lenovo y50 i7 geforce 860 non touch version.
Windows 8.1
I have had mi notebook for about 1.5 months now. Since the beginning I have had problems with the drivers, having to reinstall the sound, mouse and bluetooth drivers. Ocasionally, the PC would fail to shut off, usually freezing while trying to close windows.
The problem:
Last wednesday, oct 14, I restarted my PC to install some windows updates. The install was not successful, after at least two hours of showing the message "Installing update 7 of 17. Please dont turn off your PC" (and yes it was update 7 of 17 all the time) I decided to turn the computer off. Afterwards the windows repair would start on my next boot up but It failed on several ocations to start windows.
After unsuccessfully trying to restore the PC to its state before the windows update and failing to boot on safe mode I had to recover to the original windows image that came with the system (keeping my files but uninstallinge everything)
After the recovery I proceeded to install my olf programs and everything went ok until last night, oct 18, when again a windows update failed to finish. This time the Pc froze while restarting on the LENOVO logo. I left the computer like that all the night but it remained frozen. Tired I shut it off just to see that again windows repair would fail and the computer wouldnt boot.
Is this problem due to my PC not working, are the drivers the problem or is it windows update fault... Read more

Answer:Y50 - Computer wont start after failing update installation

Everything should work 100% with the OEM build and OS assuming its Win 8.1 64bit. If not its most likely a hardware problem. Drivers supplied even though older should work as they must have been certified for the build at Lenovo. Upgrading them may add enhancements and improved functionality. If the Computer is having problems now. Switching to a different OS complicates the diagnosis since Window 10 has plenty of trouble with these system (have you not read the tread you just posted within???) You need to call the tech support team and have them fix or repair your machine. Answer:P580 BIOS update. Cant start up computer.

hi DivineSire,
Welcome to the Forums.
Your issue might be similar to this thread:
It's possible that this BIOS update corrupted the EFI firmware settings and changing UEFI to Disabled forces legacy settings. Taking a look at  this boot chart, the system undergoes a series of security checks before Windows loads up. In legacy mode, the system doesn't undergo to these security checks on pre-boot / pre startup and directly boots the Operating System.
I recommend you contact lenovo and reportt the issue as a BIOS reflash might be necessary to correct the issue.

Today, I replaced the existing 300w power supply in my HP Envy 750-414 machine with a 600w power supply. I then installed a GeForce GTX 660 TI graphics card. After installation, I connected the monitor HDMI cable to the graphics card, and reconnected all other cables. I then tried to power up the PC. All it does is continuously make 3 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps. No display. PC will not start. I know the graphics card and power supply work; I used them in a previous machine. I then plugged the HDMI cable back into the original motherboard slot, and the PC started up with no issues.I then searched the HP forums for similar problems, and in an earlier post from another user, an HP expert had recommended updating the bios. So, I downloaded and installed the BIOS update from the HP website for my machine. After installing the BIOS update, my computer turned itself off. Now when I try to turn it on, every time, it makes 3 long beeps followed by 3 short beeps. The PC will not start at all. I tried plugging the HDMI cable back into the Graphics card, but same thing. The computer just beeps continuously, 3 long and then 3 short, over and over again. Please help!

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

Answer:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

Last night I updated windows 8.1 from windows 8.
It got to the stage where it needs to restart so it done that started the configarations and once it reached 100% it restarted.

Since then what happens is when i press power on the samsung logo comes on the screen then the black screen with the windows picture then the bsod comes up for around half a second and it restarts. then it constantly does this.

The whole cycle only takes a few seconds.

Ive tried booting in safe mode but this isnt working so I downloaded kav rescue on another computer and saved it on a flash drive, But it wont boot off this either.

Any ideas?

What does the BSOD state? Most times it is a driver issue with the Display drivers. Other times it is hardware.

Answer:Satellite A100 - Windows and BIOS doesn't start after BIOS update

Do you see the Toshiba logo?

Was there a power failure when you updated the BIOS?

Try removing the battery and AC Adapter, and leaving it for a couple of hours. You could also try reseating the RAM.

If that doesn't help, you may need to send it to an Authorized Service Center for repair.

i already changed a video card and stil it wont.
it have no beep at all and it will not display.

what should i do?

Answer:guys my computer wont start and wont have a display

does it beep any. if not this will indicate more major problems. (unless you dont have beep speaker installed) a mother board is programed with a set of beep to play if there is a problem like such as three beeps if the ram is not working, 1 long beep if the vid card is not working etc etc. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOUR BEEPs WILL BE. if you are not getting these then you need to find out why. see if you have a speaker inside your case. if you do and all of your fans spin but still no action from you pc then you may have a larger problem such as mother board or processor.

Hi everyone, I am trying to update my BIOS on my Lenovo IdeaCenter K330 Model 7727 from DKKT15AUS to DKJY15AUS. The reason for this is because my new GPU (Radeon RX 480 8GB) wont work. I install it and the computer just powers on but doesnt display anything. The fans all are on including those of the card. I have upgraded the power supply to 650W unit a few years ago from the ideacenter's original. So the BIOS update installs just fine but, once I restart the system it displays a error message saying: "Error: 0162 Setup data integrity check failure" along with 2 beeps. I restarted the system a couple times to see it the same error comes up and on the 3rd time the system started up without the error message. I then checked the BIOS version and it reverted back to the original version. I am not sure what to do to get the update to work. I do have windows 10 and the BIOS update is for windows 7. Not sure if that did have an effect. Thanks for reading.

I have an amd athlon computer, not sure of the specs other than it's XP. The computer was running a bit funny earlier today. It froze 2 times, i restarted and it continued working, till it froze a 3rd time. After the 3rd time it said "verifying dmi pool" and then "press ctrl+alt+del to reboot" and requested i boot of a cd

I tried restarting the computer 3 more times, and now nothing comes up, and i hear the hard drive spin a little, then slow down...spin then slow down..and then everything just stops.

Is it dead? Are there other alternatives? Help!

Answer:Verifying DMI pool, now bios wont start

Your HDD has failed. But there may be other hardware that has failed too. Verifying DMI Pool takes place as the computer is accessing the CD/DVD drives.
Shutdown the computer and unplug the HDD and restart the computer. If you get passed the DMI Pool then it's just the HDD that is causing the problem. If you can't go any further, one of the CD/DVD drives may be at fault too. Unplug each of these to see.
You can also remove the HDD from the computer and attach it via a USB Adapter, power it up and see if it spins up and down or if it stays spinning up.

my Satellite P300-24Z (Model: PSPCCE) won't start any more. All thats happening is that the bios
start screen is displayed. If I choose to enter the bios (by pressing F2) it just displays
"entering bios ... please wait". I asume that something is wrong with the bios since the
last operation on the notebook was changing the boot order in the bios (and than choosing

How can I repair the bios?

"Phoenix Crisis Recovery Mode

There is a phoenix utility available to assist making the recovery disk. The file wincris.exe, can be used to make a Phoenix Crisis Recovery disk which can sometimes be used in an attempt to restore your badly flashed machine.

The Phoenix crisis recovery process involves preparing a Bootable disk using the Utility wincris.exe and the updated or backup BIOS code which is renamed to BIOS.WPH Phlash16.exe is also needed.

Most makers with Phoenix BIOS require you to press a certain combination of keys whilst the machine is booting to initiate crisis recovery,. The choice of Key can be set by the maker and can be different for any given model or machine.

Using Fn or Windows Key with B or Esc, or F, or W only, should get you into to recovery mode. And a floppy drive is best, preferably a toshiba model or similar. You may find you have to try different USB ports also to get a result. Some versions of Wincris.exe will also make a usb flash drive for crisis recovery

Crisis recovery procedures differ a little between makers. For that reason you need to consult the crisis recovery information at your PC maker or motherboard makers web site and also read your manual and service information.
Also check your BIOS makers for any recovery options.

These procedures only work if you... Read more

So I updated my BIOS. I have an HP 150t and the motherboard died so I bought another one online and it was working fine but I decided to update the BIOS going into HPs website which mightve been a mistake. Now onto the problem: When I update everything was fine except it took about 20 seconds for the monitor to light up and after it did it took a really long time from the POST screen to boot into Windows. But after it did it worked like a charm. Now it still does the same except that it wont boot into Windows anymore and Startup repair has not been able to fix it. Thanks a lot for the help

I have a custom built desktop and an asrock 970M Pro3 mobo. I have windows 10 and I noticed that today my computer was being really slow. I would open google chrome and when I would look something up it took at least 1 minute to load anything. I have an program called rainmeter and a few other addons for it that told me my cpu was at 100%. Long story short my cpu was running at 100% constantly even when (besides for windows programs) I only had skype open. I looked online and saw people were having the same problem. They said to update the bios and the original creator of the thread would always say something along the lines of "Thanks it worked my pc is back to normal!" So I downloaded an update for my motherboard bios and then after I started it my screen went black. Ive tried restarting the pc and dont know what to do. Please help!

Hi to all!I just baught Z50-75 with AMD FX7500, 8GB Ram and FreeDOS. I installed Windows 8.1 Pro, and they pulled some drivers during the installation, and I went to Lenovo sight and downloaded all the rest (graphics, camera, etc.), after each installation the computer restarted normally and all was O.K. The last drivers that I saw on the site were BIOS drivers, and I downloaded those to and it started the installation after which it said:"The system will now restart for changes to make effect", and it did, but, it would not boot up after that, all it did was show me this on the screen:   And I tried both of the options (the second one with the Windows CD inside), but it just stays where it is, no effect.I can enter the bios and change the settings, but none of them seem to work because this is the maximum where it will go, the only difference is when I change from AHCI to Compatible mode, it restarts and than I have a blank screen, I have to use the One button Recovery to get back to this one from the picture above...I would appriciate any kond of help, please give me some advice.

The problem with the computer started when i tried to restart it and it simply wouldnt boot everything seemed to work the fans were spinning in every component yet it wouldnt boot as in the beep sound when a computer starts didnt sound off. One part thats intresting is that the DVD-R drive light would keep blinking green like it is reading something and make sounds. After a while leaving it for about 15 minutes or so on the computer suddenly worked and I realized this when the mobo beeped signaling its coming to life.

This was 2 days ago now yesterday late at night i was running windows when it suddenyl got really slow and froze so i restarted it manually and bam the computer wont turn on. I took it down started looking at all the components making sure everything was alright and in place I even disconnected the DVD drive completely to see if it is the cause of the problem but to now avail it just wont turn on normally. Ok my computer worked and when it booted it listed these following problems:

1-Display switch is set incorrectly

2-CMOS checksum error

3-Override enabled

4-Keyboard error or no keyboard

5- this last one it gave it to me couple of times then stopped : Warning CPU

has changed!

After listing all this it says press F1 to continue or DEL to enter setup. When i enter setup since i flashed the mobo the date was reset when i try correct the date the area where it shows which day it is flickers quickly between tues and wed and when i try to input 2007 it goes to 2056. I removed every hardware piece by piece and rebuilt the whole bloody thing I cant tell whats wrong is it my CPU, Mobo, Harddrive or powersupply all these parts are brand new and been working fine for sometime now.

For the love of god someone out there send some help as this is getting hopeless. Sometimes it turns on if i leave it on for long time on time turned right away which was after i rebuilt the pc.

Nothing will load on my Compaq Presario 700 notebook. It wont even turn on in safe mode.
When I go to turn it on it sounds like the hard drive attempts to spin. I don't hear the fans, but all the lights come on. The battery is fairly new and everything is plugged in properly.
All this began when I was running Macromedia Dreamweaver MX and it locked up forcing me to shut down.

I have been incredibly stupid and changed the settings in my BIOS setup. What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed.

As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back.

The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40

Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thank you very much!

Answer:Changed BIOS settings now Windows 7 wont start

Hi Rhodri and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

This should be quite easy to fix. All you need to do is to reset the BIOS to its defaults. Boot up and enter your BIOS. You are looking for an option to reset it to its defaults (this is NOT the same as Optimal Defaults). Alternatively, remove and replace the motherboard battery - this will cause all settings to be lost from the BIOS, so you need to make a note of your current settings on a piece of paper so that you can restore them afterwards. This will include the date and time. For details on how to do this, the location of the battery and whether or not there is a motherboard jumper that accomplishes the same thing, see your motherboard manual. Please ensure that your system is unplugged from the mains whilst you do this.

I would like to really hear straight answer to this. This BIOS version is seriously bad. I found this in the changelog. LIMITATIONS2.13 BIOS updates UMRS00347 for UEFI Vulnerability , it's mainly to improve BIOS security vulnerability, so winflash will reject user to downgrade to lower than 2.13(such as 2.12) version which doesn't have this feature. What exactly is "winflash"? I had found this page ... On the bottom, there is list of ISO images for bios from version 2.07. Does that mean it can be used? I don't want to end up with dead notebook.

I just got a used Optiplex 160 (Model DC01T) with BIOS A06 and have tried everything to get it to update to BIOS A10, A09, A08 or A07.
I downloaded the unified DOS/Windows BIOS and put it on a FreeDOS USB stick.  When I run the package it goes through everything and then reboots but never actually updates the BIOS.  I have tried installing Linux on a USB Flash drive installing the Dell OMSA tools and use dellBiosUpdate pointing to the A09.HDR file.
For whatever reason that also fails because the dell_rbu module does not populate "/sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/" like it should.  Also no amount of copying "init" to  "/sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/image_type" helps correct that issue.
The only thing I can think of is that when the system reboots it goes to an "Alert Fan!" message because this unit did not come with the HD & Fan bracket.  I have one on its way but if that Alert/Error is clearing the BIOS update flag then everything should work once the fan arrives and I get that connected.
If that's not the case is there anything else I should try?

Answer:Optiplex 160 BIOS wont update (because the fan is missing?)

I finally got it  figured out if anyone is interested.  The fan error might be causing the normal update to fail but using a bunch of switches you can force the update to install and then reboot.

Answer:x200 tablet BIOS wont update

This is yet another example of why Lenovo has failed as a company to support its customer and why, after owning 5 of these systems and recommending them to companies and friends, I'm done. I also found this same error on the X200T. It is as if nobody tests these patch releases any longer. I also have a problem with the wireless LAN driver going out to lunch. All of a sudden the Lenovo wireless app shows a red X through the connection icon (lower right) and shows the radio as powered-off. I am unable to power it on. The only solution is to reboot. This is what I paid nearly $2K for on this particular machine.

Hi there. I have a Lenovo Z575 and I installed the BIOS update on the Lenovo drivers page and now my computer wont boot. I tried to reinstall Windows 7 but it wont boot from USB, so I tried to install XP from a disc and it gets part way through set-up then i get a blue screen telling me Windows has shut down to prevent damage to my computer and the error it gives is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. However, I now have no operating system on my computer so can't use any of the fixes I find online. Oddly enough, it installs Ubuntu 10.04 that I have on a disc. It's only when i try to install Windows I get any errors.I've already tried loading default settings in the BIOS with no luck. Is there another way to reset the BIOS?ThanksSteph

Ok so i decided i would update my BIOS as i saw there was a new BIOS available at the dell website

I have a Inspiron 1100 2.2Cel, 512 Ram, 30GIG
I had a A29 BIOS and was updating to A30, So i downloaded and started the BIOS update it starts installing and has to restart as it restarts all is fine till it gets to the windows splash screen and it comes up with a certain boot file is missing in system32 ( I didn't get chance to see the specifics as i wasn't expecting a problem) and then straight away it restarts so the BIOS didnt finish installing and from then on it simply just keeps restarting at the splash screen

So i thought i would try Safe mode but the same problem, I then try putting my XP cd in and repairing the windows but still no luck so then i went and instaled a second XP which is now working fine, which relieved a bit as the Computer parse is working just not the original Windows

I now have access to the other windows install to be able to put the missing files in, But my main concern is getting "My Documents" as i have a lot of college stuff which isn't backed up on my USB drive, And when i go to get access it comes up with access denied because it's private

I have tried This
still didnt help

Tried copying some system32 files from the fresh install to the old see if the file might missing might have been added but still no luck

I did a virus scan and the scanner was able to scan the files in the "My Docume... Read more

Hi,I recently updated my Inspiron 17R (7720) to the latest bios however as soon as it completed the process the battery stopped working. When I go into the bios there is the following message:"Your battery is temporarily disabled. Please turn off your computer and try again when the unit is back to the operational temperature". The machine has been left off for many hours now and is very cool to the touch however the battery wont engage and the issue persists between multiple battery packs (I have a backup battery too). As far as I can tell it is the bios that has broken my laptop and I am unable to fix it on my own. I have spent many hours trying to fix the issue at this point, following all of the advice that I can find on these forums. I suspect that either the bios has a bug or the laptop has a faulty sensor. Is anyone able to help?

I was attempting to get into my bios, without really knowing how, and wound up in my RAID utility. I exited w/o changing anything (not real sure) next I wound up in boot sequence selection which I exited w/o changing (pretty sure) windows screen (black with 4 color flag )comes up with little bar under logo, after a few seconds screen flashes red, machine reboots, to a screen saying "windows did not start safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, etc."

This becomes a never ending loop: safe mode options displays a list of drivers, stops, reboots. Last good config, and start normally iterate to black screen with windows four-square, flash red, reboot, and back to "windows did not start..."

System is: Tyan k8w, 2X opteron, 2gb memory, RAID is a 0 (?) (2 duplicate drives), video is ati 9800 pro (which has been malfunctioning, hence trying to get into bios to change voltage) XP sp2, all patched, ZA, etc.

The bios is open and sitting next to me (wife knew how, why ask her first?)

Thanks for any help.

but i cant press anything, and after about two seconds on that screen the PC shuts down again.

The keyword lights up so there is a responds on it, but just doesn't work to press anything before it shuts down.

I've got BSOD upto several times a day for a few months time.
believe that my computer is affected by some virus or something is delaying my computer. might be an combination of several things.

I got no external things hugged up to the stationeer computer right now.

it is a windows 7 x64 machine.

usually when i get issues i can access advanced boot up or bios, but can neither in this case..
I wonder if it might be a hardware issue.
If so what do you think it might be?
and how can i diagnose the problem when i can't do anything with the machine?

Answer:Computer doesn't start cant get into bios or advanced start up setting

Would you please fill in,your systems specifications?

my satellite pro c850 cd wont work after bios update from toshiba.

what do i do?

Answer:Satellite Pro C850 wont work after Bios update

Saying: don?t work? you mean it does not power up or what do you mean exactly?
Did you flash the BIOS properly?

Possibly something went wrong during the update and this means that ROM module isn?t flashed properly?

In most cases a special BIOS crisis disk would be needed to get it working?
Not quite sure if you can get it fixed by your own?
Check this thread. Maybe it helps:

Otherwise you need help from authorized service provider available in your country.

I have just upgraded my laptop to the new BIOS as stated in the title but after doing it my computer now wont boot up at all. I just get a blue screen with it asking me to do a CHKDSK because there might be a virus or that the hard drive isn't connected properly (when it is), and it just keeps rebooting.

It wont start in safe mode either. Anyone else had the same problem and if so, how do I get my laptop back?? :(

Thanks for any replies.

Which notebook model do you have exactly?
Have you tried to install OS again using Toshiba recovery image?
It will be interesting to know if your notebook will works well with ?factory settings? again.

Try to start recovery installation to see if the right menu will be shown on the screen.

Can anyone help me please?

Updated my BIOS as recommended using the windows tool! All went through fine, backed up, verified and flashed new version. After the auto reboot my laptop will not boot past the Toshiba screen, press F12 and nothing, F2 and I just get PLEASE WAIT. Guess I won't be trying Visa or indeed any OS now.

Why oh why did I do it? All was fine before but was advised to do it for full compatibility. Do I need a new board or is there a key I can press to unable me to boot from CD to reflash or return to old BIOS?

Please help!

Answer:After BIOS update Equium A100-147 wont boot

I always say: do not touch well running system!!!

Anyway in your case something goes wrong with BIOS update and you must visit authorized service in your country. They can help you. Sorry but there is nothing you can do alone. BIOS functionality is very sensible case and if BIOS chip is defective now you can not do anything to make it work again.

Sorry. :(

Why does this happen when I have a deadline... I have a r30 and did the bios thinkpad advange update and it said code f-250 and f270 replace batt. So I replaced batt and it still says it. try to boot via cd and does not see cd or even allow me to go in to set boot priority. Out of frustration was even ready to re load xp and f-disk it but does not see the cd rom... Please anyone... need help as I lose my job if i dont get this up and I'm on someone else's comp. just to post this.... Thank you in advance for what ever in put you can help with. SignedPLEASE HELP [email protected]

Answer:R30 wont boot after bios update.. says need new b/up batt.... Please helppppppppppppp

I've found theres a physical problem with the design of the motherboard (or at least MY R30), it seems that the bios battery holder has  comes up from the motherboard indicating a dry solder joint is the cause. I have resoldered it twice and am now considering putting in a 3032 battery with the built in leads and soldering it directly to the motherboard and bypassing the dodgy battery clip altogether. Also a kludge to make sure it keeps contact is cut up a peice of plastic 1/8 inch/2-3mm thick to the size that fits underneath the keyboard plug and contacts the battery,  and wedge it under there. I've had my bios battery kept in by this method for a month or so now and im not changing it until i can be bothered with stripping my laptop down and replacing the battery connector as indicated above. Good luck, p.s. did you really need to upgrade the bios or was it a "why not?" idea?

Question: E540 want start

My machine want boot . I sent this machine in for repair. I reinstalled is. And was working on it tried to reboot had to unplug the CEOs battery to get it to start. Found a post about installing some Lenovo software and update the bios. I did and it no longer boots not even with removing the cmos battery.

Answer:E540 want start

Hi rrenfrow,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums!
Can you please confirm me with the below steps:

Is there any power Led indication when you switch on the laptop?
If you see any power led indication then try taping caps lock key and check whether the caps lock Led glows?
If the laptop is powering on, try checking only with battery?
After checking only with battery check with connecting adapter?
If nothing works, please be specific and explain me what happens exactly once you switch on the laptop?

Please let me know whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

The same symptom as here with M92p , but BIOS menu is different: Does anybody know what I could try next? System stops in POST with NO VIDEO output...

Answer:M91p wont start after installing AMD HD7450 (BIOS already updated to 9HKT58AUS)

I would have thought that card would work.    Have you tried reading the readme file for the latest graphics drivers for this system for a list of what cards they support?

So I got my hand on sevral E560 laptops (they were all second hands, apparently from a company), and all of them worked fine but one. Before someone ask, they are not supposed to have any password protection (according to the company guy). Also, this one defective unit shows me the 0271 error (Date and time) and then reboots imediatly after that (I hardly got the message but I got it on camera). I tried to boot to setup utility by pressing F1, it shows "Entring Setup" then shows the 0271 error and reboots, I tired with Enter key and it does nothing, and also with F12, which actually gives me the boot menu and app menu, but it wont boot anything (it jsut goes black then shows again boot menu) nor open setup (the error message and reboot). I looked on google and with the help of a repair shop, I was told that it's a CMOS battery replacement issue, but the battery looks fine when I use it with the multimeter, so I tried a "new" replacement (just a made up one) and it didnt work either.Hope my issue is clear. PS: I do hear a beep when the error message shows up then immediatly reboots. When starting I get "To interrupt notmal startup, press Enter" under Lenovo logo. Model E560 20EV-0013IX Thanks

Hello.I'm thinking of buying a Thinkpad E540 with a discrete nvidia gpu.I am planning to install linux on it and I don't really need optimus for it (nor is it well supported) but I'd like to occasionally be able to use it on windows. I'd like to know if it's possible to completely turn off the nvidia gpu from the BIOS so it works only with the integrated intel one or should I buy one with intel gpu only. I have read that the lenovo changed the dual gpu implementation on the latest generation thinkpads.I did some searching but I couldn't find out what exactly the BIOS options are; most results are about older gen laptops. If any owner of this specific model could anwser that would be great Please attach a screenshot of the bios settings if possible.Thank you.

I have an almost new HP dv6 I-7 pro and used windows update in xp mode and now it will not boot in XP, a black dos looking screen pops up and says windows root\system32\hal.dll missing or corrupt. Please re-install a copy of this file.
I see this file in C\win\sys32
If someone has this and can send it, maybe I can re-install it. If, that is the right thing to do. Please advise.

Hi there,
A friends laptop which has had the windows update feature turned off for the past two years. I turned on windows update and it installed lots of updates which worked fine. It then prompted to install sp1 update which has now caused the laptop to not be able to boot up.
It starts up but not fully, it comes to a screen where the are two options
1) repair start up - which goes to a techguys screen and it says it cannot fix the problem, and if I try the system restore it only finds one restore point which is prior to the sp1 update but it will not restore it says the restore fails.
2) The second option says start windows normally, which loads onto a grey screen and hangs.
I'm not really sure what to do, as I cant even start windows in safe mode as it hangs.
I don't have the vista cd and im not sure what I can do so if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.
Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Laptop wont start after sp1 update - Please help

If we know the make and model of the laptop we might be able to help you find out if it has a factory restore partition.
