ThinkPad Edge E540 failure 1802: Unauthorized network card without changing the network card!?

Question: ThinkPad Edge E540 failure 1802: Unauthorized network card without changing the network card!?

Hi, everybody. As I can find no help with this particular issure anywhere online I'll try posting here. I got the following 1802 failure message twice today on my ThinkPad (Edge E540) without having done anything to it (I know a lot of people get the message when they try to change the network card): 1802: Unauthorized network car dis plugged in - Power off and remove the network card (8086/08B1/0006/0000).(I'm not quite sure about the last numbers - I had to make a shoddy screenshot with a cell phone) I got the failure message twice (turning the laptop off and on again) and then the laptop started without problems. I checked with both Win 8 diagnostics and the Lenovo Solution Center but the status is: laptop's running just fine. All software is up to date (otherwise I might have been looking for a solution there) and, therefore, I'm clueless. My questions are:1) What can cause this particular problem?2) How can I prevent it from happening? Is there a solution (an easy-to-follow one for the laywoman)?3) Am I supposed to panic right now? Is the unprovoked appearance of this problem a sign that I should backup the whole machine asap and start looking for a new one (which would leave me pissed as my ThinkPad has been in use for meager 9 months)? I'm grateful for any help, piece of advice or insight that you can give me.

Preferred Solution: ThinkPad Edge E540 failure 1802: Unauthorized network card without changing the network card!?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I have a Thinkpad Edge 14 (E40) 0578.I purchased a new network card (mini-pciE ) for the laptop as the original one is no longer working properly.New card: get's error 1802 Unauthorized network cardIntel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 2x2 Network plus Bluetooth adapter (7260.HMWWB.R)  here is bios info( I updated to the 2.05 / ECP 1.24)BIOS ID: 80ETxxWWVersion 2.05 BIOS: 2.05 / ECP: 1.24 From everything i've read online, it appears that Lenovo bios is stopping this card from working. I would like to request a updated bios with the network card whitelisted so that i can use it. Thank you,

Answer:Thinkpad Edge (E40) Unauthorized network card 1802 error - need whitelist on Intel AC 7260

Hello and welcome,

I don't speak for Lenovo, but the chance that they will generate a modified BIOS for that laptop is zero.

If you're looking to add dual-band capability use one of the dual-band adapters listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

They will show up as a/b/g/n usually - the "a" is the 5GHz tip-off. Some of the Intel cards in the HMM don't indicate that, but a search on the FRU number indicates that they are dual band.

They seem to be available and inexpensive.

Be sure to get one with the matching Lenovo FRU number.  As you've discovered, a generic card won't work.

I did some updates to my laptop, and am now getting 1802 Unauthorized Network Card. The wireless card has been in this machine and working, before the BIOS and wireless card updates. The internal card is a Model 622ANHMWIntel Centrino-Advanced N-6200. The machine will not boot unless this card is removed. I did not purchase this latpop new, but am pretty sure that this is the original card...and like I said was working fine prior to updates. Any ideas to correct this issue? Thanks...

Greetings all. I've been having connectivity issues with my Thinkpad Yoga 11e. I'd be online and then network dropped in the next instance and the computer was having problems reconnecting to the wifi signal. I'd say it's an internet issue except no other device in the home (iPhones, iPad, Kindle, HP work laptop) don't experience this problem.  To combat this, I opened my machine up, saw I had an Intel 7260NGW, went to Amazon and purchased the same model. I'm not looking for an upgrade, I'm looking for fewer dropped connections.  Fast forward to this evening and I get the "1802: Unauthorized Network Card is plugged in - power off and remove the network card (8086 / 0881 / 8086 / C070)". How do I have compatibility issues if I bought the same model card? And what card can I get to replace the one I have if not the same model?  Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me!

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga 11e - 1802 Unauthorized Network Card error

Hi,

Historically, this may be the most common question here on the forums.

In order to pass the BIOS whitelist a card must be a listed model AND have a listed Lenovo FRU number.  As you've discovered, a "generic"  7260 won't pass.

The card models and FRUs are shown in the laptop's system service parts list.  There are several different Yoga 11e machine types so I can't link a specific partst list.  You'll find them here:

I too got  the unauthorized network card error.I have two lenovo y50-70 running centos7. One had a broadcom card and the other had the intel card. The intel card was supported easily by centos7 but the broadcom card was not. So I bought the same model intel wireless card from some random vendor and replaced the broadcom card and got the error. So my choices now are to get the driver to work for the broadcom card or use a usb wireless device. I think we should have the option of turning of that authorized card check through the bios. I have no complaints using Centos7. The only problem was the broadcom wirelses card. Broadcom does not seem to support it on a Linux machine, at least not easily. If Lenovo is going to continue using those cards they should push broadcom to support it on linux or not use the cards atr all. Cheap lesson. I'll just have to shop around more next time I buy a laptop.

Answer:R61 1802 Unauthorized network card

Hello and welcome,

In order to pass the BIOS whitelist a card must be the correct model (4965) and have a whitelisted Lenovo/IBM FRU number which indicates modified firmware (the subsystem IDs).  Does your card have an FRU number?

The FRU numbers are listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

My computer started life as an X31 (2672-N7U), but the motherboard died on me so it was replaced with an X32 motherboard (2672-M4U). Everything seems to work fine (after disabling the wireless in BIOS) except the mpci wireless card (IBM/Phlilips FRU 91P7301). I don't understand why it would give me this error message since it worked fine in the X31. Both the BIOS and Embedded Controller for the X32 are current. How do I fix this?

Answer:My X32 gives "1802: Unauthorized network card..."

The wireless card is probably not supported in the X32 BIOS. You need to purchase a wireless card that is supported by the X32. The HMM , available here, shows the 93P4170 as a supported wireless card for the X32 motherboard. I wasn't able to find any other one but you should have a look at the HMM.

Hello everybody, I wanted to upgrade the wifi card in my t420, from what it came with(just said ThinkPad b/g/n on the receipt), to the Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (Puma Peak) 3x3 AGN since i needed to be able to use a 5ghz network. I specifically choose that puma peak one, because i saw in the t420 manual that it was supported, and i'd heard of issues with unsupported cards. So i finally got the wificard, and even though i picked a supported one i get this message:1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI netwok card (8086/422B/8086/1101).System is haltedWhat have gone wrong? And could i be because this card wasnt ordered directly from lenovo, but from some random danish vendor who had it? I've tried to google around, but without luck. Only thing i can think of trying right now is taking it out again and tripplechecking that its seated properly. Hope you guys can help me, and i hope i wont have to hack the bios whitelist or something, seeing how this network card should work without that. Thanx in advance!  /Chris  edit:after some more searching and finding this link http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-69757 it would appear that the issue is due to the card not having been bought directly from lenovo. but they dont have the card available in my country (denmark). which basically means im screwed and would have to find some sort of workaround solution. fml

Answer:1802 Unauthorized network card

Yes, this is expected. Each computer manufacturer has their own whitelist for wireless cards for standards compliance. Hence, a non-Lenovo card will cause this errorYou'll need to use a modded BIOS, which may or may not be available for the T420 yet.

hierror (1802 unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the mini pci network card) when inserted a new modulewhere to get a list of supported modules?lenovo b580 / 20144

Answer:1802 unauthorized network card b580

hi niskatqq,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

By design, most, if not all OEMs, keep a list of supported network cards for their systems.

For the IdeaPad B580, the official list of supported WLAN cards can be found on page 84 of the hardware maintenance manual.
- Link to picture

If you're planning to change the Wi-Fi card, ensure that you include the Lenovo FRU when searching (ie. googling Lenovo 20200078 will bring you to this site which sells authorized lenovo spare parts).

I am getting an 1802: Unauthorized Network Card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card (0BDB/100E) error when I try to boot.  This occurred after running Windows Updates.  I was also running a Hardware scan.  I am not sure if the hardware scan was finished or not when Windows Update rebooted the computer. I can not get the computer to boot now.  I have power cycled it and flipped the switch to turn off the radio.  However, the radio light on the status is still lit up even with the switch off. What can I do to correct this problem?

Answer:X1 Carbon: 1802: Unauthorized Network Card

That's odd. My entire text vanished. Let me try again: Can you get to the setup screen? Have you tried booting from a rescue disk? While this won't help you, this serves as a reminder not to do multiple things or try to install multiple programs at the same time. Install the first program, reboot and make sure that everything is working. Install the next program, reboot, test and repeat as required. Installing two programs (or installing one and trying to multitask) usually doesn't work out well either. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi all :-) I know this topic has been around a lot, but until now, I have not found a solution which I'm happy with, I hope anybody can help me! I bought a L540 some time ago and my version had not the AC wireless adapter included, but I thought "ok, maybe I will just get that a bit later, Lenovo is pretty open to people who would like to switch stuff". So yesterday I bought the "Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260" (the one who was only available in another model) and replaced it with my current one. Startup and - "unauthorized network card". I started googling, apparently there is some kind of whitelist in the BIOS - I did not buy an Apple device for exactly this reason (also there are other reasons, but mainly this). So how can I solve this? Is there a foolproof procedure which I can apply so my new wireless card can work? I have seen some tutorials, but they are not exactly made for my Laptop. If there is no procedure, where can I buy a genuine adapter? The Lenovo store won't offer me any wireless cards. Oh and does that mean that I can't replace ANYTHING with a not genuine part? In case I would like to switch my HDD or RAM? I hope you can help! If you need more information, just let me know. Greetings from Germany,Pausmann

HiI really want wireless AC in my Lenovo E520, so I went and grabed an Intel Dual-Band Wireless AC 7260 and ran straight into the "1802 wall", **bleep**. Acording to this site: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds036007The network card should work with the E520, E525 and alike But then this site: http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/migr-77246 point 17Tells you that the E520 doesn't have the Intel 7260 on it's Whitelist. Anyone who can tell me what is going on and how to surpass this, so that I can use my new network card? Thanks in advance

Answer:E520 1802 Unauthorized network card

Hello and welcome,

The way I read your links is that the driver covers a range of laptops and wifi cards - not that all the laptops and all the cards are compatible.

The whitelist is a BIOS thing, not a driver thing; you get the message before the OS even boots.  Even if the AC7260 was whitelisted in your laptop, a generic card would not pass.  It has to be  whitelisted _and_ have a Lenovo FRU number (modified card firmware).

There's no way around this that I know of other than a modified BIOS.  No idea if there's such a thing for your laptop, sorry.  Others here may know.

Z.

I just got a brand new T460. I wanted to replace the SSD with a bigger one, so I opened the laptop and replaced the disk. I haven't touched any other components, everything is original. Now when I start the laptop it gives this error: 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the network card. System is halted. However I haven't touched any of the network cards. I returned the original SSD and the same error appears, so now I cannot even start the laptop. Any ideas how to fix the problem?

I have a t430u model 3351 that is 13 months old.  I updated all the drivers through the Lenovo system update, the last thing to update was the BIOS.  The BIOS successfully updated to version 2.08 and everthing was fine.  Then I had to reboot the computer due to some windows updates, upon turning back on I get the 1802 Unauthorized network card is plugged in. I never replaced the network card, it is the original card so I think the BIOS update is causing the problem.  I pulled the network card and the FRU P/N on the card is 04W3763.  With the card out it boots up again but I can't believe the card is the issue since it's the original part in a 13 month old machine. Not sure what to do, I'm hoping there is a way to roll back the BIOS maybe. Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:1802 Unauthorized network card after bios update

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.

A question... Did you purchase the machine new, direct from Lenovo, or used from a 3rd party?

Regards.

Edit to follow-up: Looking at the FRU BOM for the T430U:
http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t430u_fru_bom_20130822.pdf
you'll see the section for wireless adapters. There are three for WLAN, one Intel, and as best I can determine, two RealTek. Your FRU, which again as best I can tell, is a Broadcom, isn't on the list. That would be a reason for your 1802 error hitting the BIOS whitelist.

So, if you got the machine from a 3rd party, what likely happened is that they swapped in the non-whitelisted card and applied a modified BIOS to make it all work. Once you updated with the official BIOS, you essentially reapplied the whitelist and the boot fails with 1802.

I have a T60 and just got the 1802 error the other day.  After losing 1.5 days of work, here's what I learned: I've pulled the internal wifi card (3945) and then it boots fine. (this was after I thought the pci controller on motherboard was dead & had the "IT Guys" come to same conclusion. (Day & 1/2 distraction pulling the HD & replicating my work environmental since I would be expecting a nice wait for a new machine). Then, after noodling on the error, decided to find & pull the wifi card.  Booted fine.   I think I could have toasted it from some accidential overheating. Anyone have any suggestions on compatibility with replacement card (since I don't want to get the 1802 error went I replace it). Best o' luck.  ABB

Looks like a whitelist issue. Each Thinkpad BIOS has one, and it differs between models. Your 60Y3241 is apparently only whitelisted for the E420 but not E425.

Hello and welcome,

It looks like that should work.  Are you running the latest BIOS?   It's possible (maybe) that the card was added to the whitelist in a BIOS update.

Otherwise you will probably need to contact the card seller about this.

Hi  (refer T41) I have, with increasing regularity been receiving the error "ERROR 1802 Unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the miniPCI network card. I have sometimes been able to power off and on again for it to dissappear, or I may have to remove the battery or reload the BIOS (from the latest downloads) or even change CMOS settings and save.. but now it is not responding to anything... I am using the inbuilt wireless, I am not on a docking station and just have a DVD CD-RW drive and nothing else fancy. I see all the posts of this error but none that refer to what I feel is a phantom message. It is not under warranty and I have a feeling someone will tell me there is a problem on the motherboard.... the optimist in me , hopes not.  Any help would be  appreciated regards Lars

I have an x130e (0622-23U) and wanted to update my wireless card. I looked up the compatible cards in the Hardware Maintenance Manual. It listed several, including FRU 60Y3241, Intel Centrino Wireness-N 1000. I bought a card matching this description on Ebay. It arrived and is labeled as advertised. It shows Model: 112BNHMW. When I installed it and rebooted, I get the BIOS error 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in. Did I buy a brick from from Ebay? (Wouldn't be the first time.) Or is there something else that I should be looking for when I shop for a compatible wireless card? Thanks,

Answer:1802 unauthorized network card - but FRU is listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

The right manufcturer's part number in not enough. It needs to have a Lenovo FRU, which means it has the right firmware, to agree with FCC testing.  Fakes do exist, also.

Yesterday I received my Lenovo Thinkpad T440p.I wanted to install Linux immediately, but apparently 14.04 is not able to boot with the 2.22.The solution suggested in various forums was to downgrade Bios to version 1.14, which I did using the WindowsInstaller provided on the Lenovo Support page. After rebooting I get the infamous 1802 error: Unauthorized network card plugged in, presumably because of the whitelist not being up to date. I was told by the support hotline to update my BIOS to another version using the bootable CD images.I burnt various versions of them, but none of them would boot.  The error appears right after the Thinkpad Splash screen. I can't get into Bios. The pressing of any buttons (Esc F1, F11, F12, Enter etc.) doesn't have any effect either. How can I install another BIOS version? Is there any additional step I have to take, in order to update BIOS by a bootable CD? Any help is highly appreciated!

Hello, I just ordered an E540 and it comes with an Intel 7260-N (not AC) mPCIE and it also has an unpopulated M.2 (NGFF) slot presumably for an mSATA cache option. My question is this, can I replace the wireless card with the 802.11AC equivalent? Reading online that replacing the wireless card can cause boot error, but I'm almost certain that I've seen this card (7260-AC) available as configuration option so...? I'd also like to add an mSATA drive to store my OS on and use a 1TB HDD for media (instead of using SSD then using ODD caddy for 1TB HDD, thus losing optical drive).I know that I can add an mSATA card, but where can I buy one? NGFF is fairly new so no one is selling it, and the ones that are have low capacities for high prices. Thanks, Danz207

NGFF is fairly new so no one is selling it, and the ones that are have low capacities for high prices.Note that mSATA and NGFF (now referred to as M.2) are not the same thing.  M.2 cards have a different connector and can be wired for SATA, PCIe or both.  Your laptop has the M.2 SSD slot wired for SATA, so you'll need to look at M.2 SATA SSD's, not PCIe ones.  Whether or not your machine can boot from the M.2 SSD slot will probably be a case of trial and error given that Lenovo only recommend using the M.2 slot for caching. As for available M.2 SSD products, the appropriate one depends on the available space you have.  I couldn't see which length M.2 SSD's could be used in the hardware owners manual for the E540.  However, generally the shortest is going to be 42mm, also known as 2242.  Currently the only product in that length is the MyDigitalSSD 128GB M.2 SATA SSD.  If the slot is longer, up to 80mm, then that opens up the Crucial M500/M550 M.2 SATA (2280) SSD's as an option, which are available in 120/128/240/256/480/512GB capacities.   The Crucial M500 M.2's are available all over the place.  We are still waiting on Crucial getting the M550 M.2 into regular pro... Hi noney2004,There is a solution posted here:- http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=55837, but it's not for SL series. I think the solution to your problem is buying the wireless N card directly from lenovo rather than third party vendor.Hope it helps.

Hello fellow board users and team, My first post here. I have just ran Windows(10) updates and shut my Thinkpad T460s to upgrade my RAM. After powering up, before booting the system, this error pops by: "1802: Unauthorised network card is plugged in - power off and remove the network card. System is halted" So I swapped back to the previous RAM, same situation. I have removed RAM from the socket. SAME ERROR.The Thinkpad is bought brand new from Lenovo partner and is 3 days old.I have also read similar threads on this forum when users updated their BiOS or changed their network card. Well my case was Windows update and RAM change. It just happened to another user at our work and he did not run updates, he only upgraded RAM. Any help would be appreciated

As the heading goes, for no apparent reason my E530C is suddenly giving me the 1802 error. I have not changed the card, I have not updated any drivers, the machine was not switched off during an update or anything out of the ordinary. It was simply switched off one day and the next it gave this error.I cannot enter the bios to disable the card as the error comes up first. The machine works without the card attached but it's a stock card that has worked till now so I can't believe that it's not part of the whitelist that I've read about. Please, any help at all would be much appreciated. Nox41

I got an Intel 6230 Wireless card today, replaced the factory card, and booted my computer to be greeted with a message saying "Unauthorized network card". I removed it, cleared the supervisor password on my BIOS, and rebooted with it plugged in. Same message.Google time! Found that Lenovo does this to a lot of their laptops, and whitelists, not blacklists, a few cards. Can somebody please explain if it's possible to override it, or why this "feature" is here in the first place? To protect from... malicious wireless cards?

Answer:Unauthorized network card on G550

Hi Pilif12p,

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_unauthorized_MiniPCI_network_card

Lenovo, as well as most of the major players match the card with the antennas to comply with FCC regulations regarding interference.

The card has to be a Lenovo branded card, a generic one won't work, (as you found out).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-G450-G550-Intel-5300-Wireless-N-Card-/110608336574?pt=LH_Def...

Your machine will take an Intel 5300 as long as you have the three antennas for it. Again, it has to be a Lenovo branded card.

Y50-70 laptop, Windows 8.1, UHD, 256 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 860M, Intel 7260AC Yesterday afternoon, at my office, I used my computer, including wifi, with no problems at all. Yesterday evening, at home, I tried to use the computer and it was acting like the wifi card was off, even though I never turned it off. This happened once before, several months ago, and was fixed with a reboot. So I shut the system down and restarted, but after the Lenovo splash screen, and before the Windows splash screen, I get the message "Unauthorized wireless card is plugged in. Remove it and reboot the system." The only way I'm able to get the computer to boot is to go into the BIOS and disable the wireless card. I've updated the BIOS firmware to the newest one listed on the Lenovo support site. I've updated the wireless driver to the newest one listed on the website. But I'm still not able to boot the computer with the wireless card enabled. This is not a BIOS Whitelist issue, as I have not replaced the wireless card. It's the same wireless card (Intel 7260AC) that shipped with the laptop and has worked just fine for the six months or so that I've had the computer. Has anyone experienced this problem and does anyone know how to solve it? Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Y50 "Unauthorized wireless network card is plugged in"

Welcome to the Lenovo Community !

Sorry to hear of the problems.

Just to rule out any conflicts between the installed hardware and the BIOS try this........

1. Unplug the charger / adapter. 2. Press and hold the Power Button for 30 seconds. 3. Plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If the above procedure didn't resolve the issue then I would suggest you contact Lenovo Support for warranty service.  Since the card was working earlier this could be an indication that the wireless card has failed.  You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

We understood that your query is about Wifi up-gradation on ThinkPad E430.

We regret to inform you that Intel Dual band will not support and there is not driver available for that adapter from Lenovo driver page.

I've bought my lenovo y50-70 2 months ago and I'm very happy with it, though, I am always having wi-fi issues. Everyone arround me would have a strong wifi connection and my laptop would just not see it or if it did it would drop the connection after 2 minutes. I tried new wifi drivers and reinstalling the network card (when I opened the laptop it was very loose, but none of this helped my problem.Yesterday I bought a new network card, an Intel 7265 Wireless AC card, downloaded the drivers from the lenovo website. Uninstalled my old wifi card in device manager, opened my laptop, took out the old and put in the new card, reconnected the wires and closed the laptop back up.Now when I try to boot I get an error stating "Unauthorized Wireless network card is plugged in. Power off and remove it"I paniced a little but found out that when I disabled the wireless card in the BIOS I could fortunatly still boot into windows. I'm a little unsure why this card is not on the authorized cards whitelist because I know for a fact lenovo uses this card in many other y series laptops. I tried updating my bios to version 3.3, was on version 2.x. But no luck there. Is there any way I can get this wifi card to work? I've read a lot online and it seems that by hacking and flashing my BIOS I could get it to work. I have experience flashing a new BIOS but I do not want to do that on my laptop if it is unofficial, since there is no BIOS reset button.I hope someone can help me, thanks in advance,... Read more

Answer:Lenovo y50-70 Unauthorized Wireless network card problem

Well it certainly seems to be the same issue as when I got my Thinkpad years ago. Lenovo chooses to restrict the use of cards not holding their ID # or whatever is the identifier in BIOS.  No feasible way around it. You'd need to replace it with one Marked as Lenovo compatible and/or bearing the Lenovo label somewhere. You may be able to exchange it or get Lenovo to replace the original card.

Hello,I've spent literally days searching for a solution to this problem.Eventually I gave up - posting my first message here with hope that someone will help. Those who have encountered a similar issue may already know that Lenovo has whitelisted product restrictions in place.I bought my Lenovo T430 from an auction (third-party seller). Everything was working fine, even the wireless network card Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205.Then I decided to reinstall the system and bring everything back to the factory settings (my bad). This is where I came across the error:"1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - Power off and remove the miniPCI network card."Well initally I thought that there were still some drivers missing. I disabled the security boot in BIOS, rebooted the system, connected to the internet via my wired LAN (the wifi network card wasn't recognized under the Device Manager, not even the classic yellow question mark). I've done all the Windows updates. Also all the applicable Lenovo Thinkvanatge updates incuding the latest BIOS.Then I enabled the secure boot again and got the same error message "Unauthorized network card is plugged in".Now I basically function only by using my wired LAN adapter.I probably haven't posted nothing new.The advice would be - "get the Lenovo recognized compatible wireless card.Find the proper FRU and FCC ID combination for your specific model".Frankly I am willing to pay for the proper wireless card! But it's so tough to find al... Answer:"Unauthorized Wireless network card is plugged in. Power off and remove it"

Hi trout-oblongata

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First Try Draining power off the System,
Remove the Battery and AC adapter
then hold down the power button for at least 15 sec.
Now try to put the Battery and AC back in then turn on the system see if that resolved it.

If not, Try Accessing BIOS by tapping F2 when you press the ON button.
If successful in booting to BIOS hit Hit F9 to reset Settings now Hit Enter to Confirm then Hit F10 to Save and Exit and Enter to confirm. Check if that fixed the issue

If the problem still shows up or BIOS is not accessible.
I suggest Contacting Lenovo or If you're comfortable, Reseat the Wlan Card of the system.
You can Check this guide for disassembly method.
http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/Lenovo%20G470G475G570G575%20Hardware%20Mainenance%20...
Just be extra careful in removing parts, Damages while replacing parts may not be covered under warranty.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Last Wednesday my Lenovo G570 showed just after switching on power the error message "Unauthorized Wireless Network Card plugged in. Power off and remove it.". The event happened two weeks after expiration of the warranty on a 2 years old laptop without ever changing the network card. All entries in forums on this message were about installing new network cards. Hence I checked Lenovo service and found out that there is no reapair service outlet in Germany for this series. So I called the service line and was informed that I have to send in the laptop to a central service place and would get it back after some weeks without any data and with a fully reset system. I rejected this option as absolutely ridiculous and not acceptable. As Lenovo could not offer me any other option I brought the laptop to an independent repair service. They removed the network card, and the system booted normally. Then they tried 5 different network cards, all showed the above error message. This probably means that the connection of the network card is broken. The proposed solution was to use a USB wireless LAN stick and indeed now the laptop runs normal again. There are 3 questions that I have:1) has anyone else encountered similar issues ?2) Why does a broken network card connection prevent the entire BIOS and Windows system from starting instead of just disabling the WLAN function ?3) Why does Lenovo run a hotline which is completely useless for consumers, only offers frustrating experie... I just bought the Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro as a business laptop, replacing my former T420s...

When I launched a global windows update by checking all boxes, after I reboot I'm now getting this message permanently :
"Unauthorized wireless network card is plugged in. Power off and remove it."

Of course, I can't boot nor can I chose mode sans échecs.

The only way to boot is to go to the BIOS and deactivate the wlan card... in which case I can't change the drivers!!

I already lost 2 days of my time because of this crappy issue. Great start for a business PC!!!!

I recently bought Intel 802.11ac mini PCIe card and tried replacing 802.11n card in my Lenovo W540. It triggered the infamous problem with BIOS whitelist blocking: 1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the network card (8086 / 08B1 / 8086 / C070). The card itself is FCC approved (FCC ID: PD97260NG) I updated the UEFI/BIOS hoping that may be it was too old to recognize the card - but no luck. Even with UEFI firmware 2.17 it still didn't accept the card. Can anything be done about it? Are future UEFI updates going to fix it or Lenovo basically approves a small list of vendor IDs and ignores the rest? I tried finding any cards sold directly through Lenovo, but didn't find anything, that's why I had to buy one independently. But it rejects it. Can anything be done about it except finding another card? And if not, what 802.11ac Intel cards can be used?

Hello everyone.  I am trying to upgrade the wifi on this Thinkpad Edge 13 - 0197, and am having a hard time.  I thought I looked up the proper whitelisted cards for this model, and came up with FRUs: 60Y3195 and 60Y3251.  When I installed them, I got 1802 error.  I have the latest bios for this computer 1.25 (6ZET38WW).  Any thoughts or ideas on how to get one of them to work? Thanks.

Answer:Edge 13 Bios 1802 error with proper whitelisted card

From whom did you buy the wifi card? Please provide a weblink to the seller, if possible.

Is there a way to install an Intel 4965agn miniPCI in a Thinkpad T61?  Have updated BIOS, etc., but no combination works.  Get 1802 error re: unathorized card and Google work-around's don't seem to work on T61 series (on my laptop anyway). RegardsHSA

Answer:1802 error on Thinkpad T61 trying to add Intel 4965agn card

Welcome to the forum! My guess is that you're trying to install a generic Intel card, and this will not work in a ThinkPad, since the BIOS detects it and blocks the boot with the message you've encountered. Only IBM/Lenovo approved cards (with a FRU number on them) will work without triggering the error message. And from what I recall (might be wrong) there is no BIOS hack for newer ThinkPads, T61 included. Hope this helps.

Hello, My Thinkpad edge of nearly 2 years has as of today stopped showing a carrier signal on it's network port. This follows constant use under Slackware 14 since purchase (have tested with stock OS and knoppix). The first sign of trouble was in april this year when plugging in to a specific client network caused the transfer speed to slow to a permanent crawl after dhcp, and may have been triggered by plugging in to a bad wall socket at another site today. Anyone had luck replacing them, are they too much hassle, and is there a good usb network card that could do the trick? Shame to lose it, really liked these - and bought them for clients too.

Hello all I am about to buy and install a WWAN card to a new 11" Edge and have two questions: (1) I have seen the following Part #'s for the WWAN card implying it is the same card: 60Y3263 - 60Y3183 - 78Y1398 - 78Y1399 (2) Will the 60Y3263 - 60Y3183 - 78Y1398 - 78Y1399 card work for a "3" SIM in the UK? Thanks Ray

Answer:Edge 11" - WWAN Card - UK Network - Advice please

Hello mate, All these card are the WWAN modem Gobi 2000 but there are differents.60Y3183 is a modem unlocked but its an old reference the new one available is 78Y1399.78Y1398 is lock for AT&T and 60Y3263 is lock as well. If you are with 3 you need a modem unlocked.

Hello !I own an E540 20C6 00HFR which came with a memory card made by Samsung (4GB) (4GB 1R8PC3L-12800S-11-13-B4 M471B5173 EB0 YKO 1432 written on the label)I would like to increase the amount of memory availlable but in the less expensive way. So I've a couple of options if I'm not mistaken :Buy a 4GB module to couple with the existing one to a grand total of 8GB.Buy an 8 GB module to get a grand total of 12GB.If I'm not mistakent, both option are possible, but the 8 G module will have less good preformance compared to the same size module in both slots.I've a couple of questions :What module should I buy from : Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, G. Skill ? ( These are the brand my local dealer sells)I would be delighted to get a P/N for the 4 and 8 GB options. Many thanks in advance for your help and answer.

Answer:Thinkpad E540 memory card. Which one to buy ?

I'm currently on my E540 with the stock 8GB module and separately added 4GB... even the separate one is 1333, not like the stock 1600 mhz.You won't feel any difference... unles you're using only the on-board intel GPU, which uses the RAM for memory...But remember, always put on slot1 the bigger memory module...

Hi I'm sure there must be a few who have experienced this.

I've done an upgrade and removed all Cisco VPN software / Kaspersky.

I upgraded the intel NIC 82577 to the latest driver before upgrading but I still get the error the message in device manager that the NIC is not working with error code 39.

tried re-installing / removing the NIC updating the drivers manually of which it tells me the drivers aren't 64 bit, but they currently work on my windows 7 64bit,
Looked up the deleting the reg key (does not exist on my system)
I have another PC with the same problem of which I did the system reset and the NIC worked fine on that, the problem is that after reset the activation then fails with Activation key not compatible enter a different code.

Can anyone recommend the best course of action to get to windows 10 and get a working licence?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Network card failure

Hi greg and welcome to the forum.

What driver are you currently using for the Intel 82577? Are you on 20.2? If you are, then maybe you can do a manual install of the driver using compatibility mode to enable functionality.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/dow...for-Windows-8-

As far as your activation issues are concerned. Please start a new thread in the "Windows Updates and Activation" sub-forum. This should be your most urgent priority as certain functions of Win10 will not be working correctly without full activation. I am assuming you upgraded to Win10 from within Win7. ie You didn't try to upgrade via a clean install

hello, got this new thinkpad i series pIII 750, model 1161-A96, it appears that the built in ethernet card at the rear is diabled.

tried to seach the card via install new hardware but it is not detected. tried to do it manually using the downloaded driver from the website but this did fix it either.

the bios has no option to enable this.

any ideas on how to get this working...

Answer:Thinkpad network card

If there definitely isn't an option in the BIOS for it, and all the normal ways of doing it in Windows don't work either, it may be a faulty port. Just check in Device manager first though that there isn't an unidentified device lurking somewhere as that may be it.

If not, as it is a brand new laptop take it back to the dealer and get them to check it out for you.

Hey guys, I've installed Windows XP on my laptop which previously has Ubuntu 11 but we don't have the recovery disc anymore so when I installed Windows XP I need to install the drivers manually as well. Hello, I'm considering to buy the new Lenovo Thinkpad E540 series, but before I place my order I have some questions.  1: Is it possible to place a mSata hard drive in this laptop? You can equip it with a 16gb ssd drive but I want to use it as a primary drive for installing Windows and 16gb is not enough storage capacity for that purpose. I'm not sure this type is compatible with mSata drives from, for example, samsung, with higer storage capacity. And if I don't add the 16gb drive, does it still have a mSata port available on the motherboard?  2: When I configure the laptop at the website, the only choice I have is the E540 intel or the E540 NV N14p-GV2+ graphics, 2gb. I think that the NV N14p-GV2 is the code name for the Geforce GT740M but I'm not sure. Could someone confirm this? Thank you!

Answer:Thinkpad E540 mSata and Graphic card

Hello and welcome,

I believe the E540 uses an M.2 (formerly NGFF) SSD slot.  It is not mSATA compatible.  M.2 can come in several lengths, and I don't know for sure what the E540 supports.  Hopefully someone else can help with that.

Hi All
Just looking to bring my old 7720 into the modern world a little bit by updating the network card. I've only ever experienced a 144mbps connection despite the advertised 300mbps speed.

So I want to put something a little bit newer in there - however I hear about something called whitelisting where a manufacturer restricts what upgrades can be done/what devices can be installed?
I am a bit wary as whenever i try to install new drivers for the current card (centrina 2230) they never seem to update when installing direct from intel.... just leave me with the 2015 versions despite installing correctly.

Anyway if i put a new card in there capable of higher speeds am I asking for trouble or will this work?
I would be tempted to try but as I will have to order the part in I cant just take it back to the shop if it doesn't work...

I'm running Win 2k advanced server on a Hewlett Packard Proliant rack mounted server (not sure of the exact model at the time of writing) and I keep getting periodical outages of one of the two installed network interface cards (always the same one).

I'm not sure if this is just down to faulty hardware or whether there could be a software problem.

Can anyone suggest any tests I can do to try and isolate the problem (I don't want to swap the card out until I'm more certain about what's causing it to happen).

Thanks.

I was just a LAN network game 25 minutes ago, and in the middle of the game I get disconnected from it.

i exit the game, and I'm getting a connectivity warning from limewire, and my system tray says I'm connected to a network at 10.0Mbps. I have an IP and subnet mask, but no Default Gateway number. Commandline ipconfig /release and /renew fail repeatedly (cannot renew). Right-click repair fails. Device manager says my network card is working properly and its light and the light on our hub are on.

I am on a cable connection via a hub and a linksys router. Other comps plugged into the same router connect normally. Using a different Cat-5 and port doesn't make any difference.

Any suggestions for what to do from here?

Hi, I ordered myself a Gigabyte Atheros 5802 Wireless Draft-N network card from OxfordTech, along with a third antenna to install into my Lenovo ThinkPad SL-300 "NS64YMN".. Unfortunately I didn't check whether it would be some issues regarding replacing the wifi card inside ThinkPad SL-300 before I placed my order.. Now I'm sitting here with my new antenna and card, but I don't really understand how to replace the Intel 5100 card? For me it makes no sense whatsoever to not offer a somewhat easy replacement of the wireless card? But for some awkward reason this simple task seems almost impossible on the ThinkPad SL-300? We've got easy access to the WWAN, TurboMemory, it's also a somewhat easy access to the CPU, but no the wireless card nor it's antennas? That's somewhat a huge disappointment for me.. Is there anyway to replace the wireless card without ripping the entire machine into hundred pieces?

Answer:Replacing the wireless network card? (Lenovo ThinkPad SL-300 "NS64YMN")

The HMM for our SL300 is available from Lenovo Support page. I gives you the proper procedure for replacing the wireless card. Unfortunately the link isn't working properly. It states "File not found".

My laptop has just stopped powering all 4 of its USB ports. This is odd because the night before, everything was working really well. I just turned it on the next morning and it doesn't recognise my Microsoft wireless mouse UCB insert. It?s like someone?s flicked a switch and just turned off every insert point because both cable and wireless internet are no longer working, I can?t see my external hard drive. I haven?t tried to connect my iPod by firewire yet, but I imagine that will bring the same problem.

I know the hard ware is still working because I plugged it (the mouse) into another computer yesterday and it worked straight away. I?ve tried looking at the hardware options in ?control panel? and been through the Microsoft USB trouble-shooter walkthrough to no avail. The most recent program I installed was a driver for a Belkin wireless network card. I have uninstalled this, although, this was installed around a month ago and everything was working fine before so maybe that?s just me being superstitious, and this hasn?t had any influence.

The laptop dual boots, one for audio production, the other for home-type applications like email, word processing etc and the problem is happening when I boot up in either partition. I?m running Microsoft XP Pro on a 15.1 Pro-Studio Modular Laptop P-4 with Pentium-4 3.2Ghz of RAM and 1Gb of DDR Memory.

Is there something relatively simple that I?m missing? Or is it likely that every single port appea... Read more

Answer:USB power/insert failure (along with internet, firewire and wireless network card)

You could try the USB settings in the BIOS setup. Like disable USB keyboard support etc.

Did you put the Belking driver on both instances of Windows?

To rule out a problem with Windows download a bootable Linux CD like INSERT or Knoppix. Burn and boot it and see if you can access your external HD. It should also detect your USB mouse.

Uninstalling things in windows does not always remove the system drivers (and this causes lots of issues). Go to Device Manager and tell it to show hidden devices. Remove everything you don't need. Look under non-pnp devices for any suspicious leftovers.

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.

My Broadcom Net Extreme Gigabit network card failed the Lenovo PC-Doctor test which is hard to understand since I have an internet connection.   I am suffering intermittent delayed write errors although my hard drive and all other hardware passes the tests. I will say though it seems that delayed write errors happen when I am connected to a website that's very busy with graphics & video stuff or I have several tabs open at the same time.   I get these wavy line interruptions on my screen and the cpu fan revs up;  like the one I  had just now while viewing this website, although I did not crash.   I really don't understand the intermittent wavy lines on my browser.  Is this related to a network card that failed a PC Doctor test? It's too bad my network card is integrated into my motherboard.  Is there any reason why I can not install a PCI network card alongside my integrated one?

I looked at the specs for your unit and your systemboard will not handle that card. Even with the BIOS and EC updated, you will need to use a different card. If you have the FRU for that wireless card, I can look it up for you. Refer to the Lenovo support page below to look up all the FRU numbers for the wi-fi cards that are compatible with your unit. http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/quickPath.do?quickPathEntry=272358U then look under "Parts Information" Regards,Mark

Question: Thinkpad Edge E540

I have an interesting situation, just bought this laptop literally a week ago and noticed this happens on a very frequent basis. Right now the trackpoint is disabled and touchpad is enabled. So that makes the lower right hand corner the right click and the remainder the left click. Well at randomn times the entire touchpad will become a right click and will stay right click. No matter where I click on the touchpad the pop up menu will display. I also noticed that when this happens the touchpad is very sensitive, if i place a finger on it and stay there it will move around the screen. It is completly random there is no consistency what so ever. Anyone have any suggestions. When this happened, I have managed to get to the mouse properties and nothing has changed. A restart will not fix the issue. It has to be a shutdown then turn on again to fix the issue.

I am just wondering where can I find the list for approved minipci wireless network card or disable the UEFI lock for itI am trying to install Killer NIC N1103 on it""ERROR1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.""One more thing is there anyway to disable the UEFI lock so I can boot from my Fedora live usb?

Answer:Thinkpad X130e AMD e300 approved minipci network card and UEFI preventing Fedoraliveusb from booting

Hello,

As far as I know, Lenovo offers no way to disable the whitelisting for MiniPCIe cards in the BIOS/UEFI firmware.

You may be able to find firmware that does this from a third-party, but I would imagine that installing it voids your warranty.  At least until Lenovo-provided firmware is reinstalled.

But you need to know few things before you take a decision to install the non-lenovo product. Any functionally equivalent product, program, or service that does not infringe any Lenovo intellectual property right may be used instead. However, it is your responsibility to evaluate and verify the operation of any other product, program, or service.

Regarding the OS installation in SSD, OS will only boot up faster with a solid-state drive. That being said, if you perform any operating system related task that needs to retrieve data from the drive, it will be much faster than if your OS was on the HDD. That being said, if you only care about loading subsequent programs (or logistically prefer keeping your OS separate), you can easily keep the SSD as a secondary drive, only using it for certain programs/tasks. The whole point of a solid-state drive is to decrease application loading times

Please let us know, whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.
