How to disable touchpad tap/click?

Question: How to disable touchpad tap/click?

OK, I've spent 2 nights now reviewing the forum, and have not found an answer. Surely I can't be the only person that wants to turn off the tap/click feature on the touch pad. Every other machine I've ever had it's a simple click box under mouse headings. I can't find anything. And the sensitivity changes don't relly help. I just have never liked that function. Thanks for any help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using my Lenovo X1 carbon for 4 months.  But the experience has been awful. I don't know if my tackpad is defective or not.  Currently I am in the Philippines and there is no way to check or service my unit since they don't carry this model here. My problem is when i tap the touch pad the right click button comes out 80% of the time.  This is really annoying.  I already disabled the right click to double finger tap.  But still even with one single tap on the middle of the touchpad the result is 80% of the time its like doing a right click.. Very annoying. Please help me.  If this is touchpad is defective can anyone let me know so I will have this serviced in Dec. in the US.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite L50-B-1NL running on Windows 8.1. I am trying to disable the tap to click option on the track pad, as I find it is way to sensitive causing increased frustration.

I searched Google and it says there is an option to turn of track pad, but when I go into my settings the turn off option is the only one missing? Is there a way I can turn off tap to click as it is driving me mental.

Answer:Satellite L50-B-1NL - How do I disable tap to click on touchpad?

If I understand you right you want to disable whole touchpad, right.
You can do this using FN+F5 key combination or using F5 key only.

Please open user?s manuals and check page 58. There you and find very useful info about usage of F keys.

Hey guys,

I have an HP Pavilion dv2700 Notebook with Windows Vista. When I first set up the laptop, I disabled the "tap to click" feature. But the tap to click feature has been enabled once again and now I don't know how to disable it. Originally, I believe I did the common sense thing and went to control panel, mouse, device settings and disabled it. Now when I click on mouse in control panel, I'm given only four tabs to choose from: buttons, pointers, pointer options and hardware. Device settings is no where to be seen. I've gone to a plethora of forums and every solution has said to use this device settings tab which isn't there.

Please help.

Is there any way to disable the right-click zone of the touchpad on my T440s?  The lower right corner seems to be permanently mapped to a right click with one finger, which is completely unnecessary given that I use two fingers for a right click.  Disabling this would make the touchpad behavior much more predictable.

Answer:Disable right click zone of the touchpad?

I second this. I can do this on Linux, the fact that I can't do it on Windows too is kind of a shame.

New Dell Inspiron 5567.
In all of my previous computers from different companies but not Dell, "Mouse Properties" has included one additional tab on the far right of the tabs, which has a setting to Disable Touch to Click.

Mouse Properties on this laptop does not have that, nor can I find that simple but for me essential setting option.

How do I do that?

Answer:How to disable touchpad click sound on Satellite L

Hi

Usually the touchpad does not create any sounds.
I assume you have installed an USB mouse and the sound appears due to the usage of this mouse.

I have no clue what mouse software this is but I think you should check the settings inside this tool.
Otherwise you have to check the control panel -> mouse
There are some options which are available to mouse and touchpad.

Hello all

I have had my new Toshiba Satellite C50D-B-11N laptop for a few days now and I like it a lot.. However I do NOT like the touchpad clicker. Is there any way to turn the click function off on the touchpad as it clicks things whilst I?m moving my finger across the touchpad and it is really annoying me seriously and there is no setting that I can find to resolve this issue!?

I have looked in mouse and touchpad settings and there is no setting to turn the touchpad click function off. Can anybody help please?

Thanks very much

Answer:How to disable touchpad click on my Satellite C50D-B-11N?

To be honest such issue is not known to me and I heard it for the first time now. Usually if something should be ?opened? you must use tapping option.
With other words, so long you have permanent contact with touchpad surface nothing should be open and click option cannot be active.

Anyway, check please if you can find tapping option in mouse properties and disable it just to see if problem persists.

First Lenovo product, purchased a T440.  The touchpad is really, odd I guess is the best word.  You can physically depress the entire trackpad to trigger a mechanical "click" or you can tap to click.  The mechanical click is obnoxious at best.  It's just sensitive enough to accidentally press down when moving the pointer. Is there a way to disable this mechanical pressing?  Like a screw somewhere to lock it in place?

I feel silly for posting to ask this - but I have spent an hour trying to sort this out now and am at the point of banging my head against a wall!

How do I disable the touchpad click feature on my laptop mouse.

I have an Advent 5301 and the touchpad is synaptics.

In "Mouse Properties" there are no options regarding the touchpad at all. Please do not tell me to go there. I have been there and I have looked thoroughly through every part of it. There are no touchpad options.

I tried downloading a driver by going here: http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers - but that just stuck me with a program called Scrybe, which did not appear to do anything at all.
It took forever to download and install, so when it was finally done and after all that proved to be useless I uninstalled it out of rage, and now I just get errors if I try and install it again. I only try to do so as I am at a loss as to what else to do.

Could someone please find me a link to the driver for my laptop? I have looked but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Please help before I go insane!

Usually,when you install a synaptics touchpad driver,it
will put a synaptics control panel in the windows control panel
and sometimes an icon in the taskbar where settings can be accessed.
Just look for tap settings.

I am having lots of issues with the right button click zone on my Spectre x360. The default right button click zone is on the lower right corner of the touchpad and there is no way to move it to other corners of the touchpad. I'm right handed so most of my left clicks end up in the right button click zone, which is super annoying after a while. I checked all driver options and I couldn't find a way to shrink the size of the zone or completely disable it. I'm extremely surprized and frustrated at the lack of basic customization available for this essential user interface element. I'm running the latest available driver version 19.0.12.98 Rev.A. I updated an old G530 (4446-23U) with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit last night and everything more or less works (sound, wireless, webcam, etc.) but the one thing I'd really love to do is turn off the "tap to click" functionality on the TouchPad. I downloaded the Windows 7 64-bit drivers for the TouchPad from lenovo.com and although it did change some of the features that appear in the mouse settings in the control panel, disabling tap to click isn't one of the options. Any suggestions? Thanks!

As I understand your concern, you are unable to disable tapping.Make sure the touchpad driver is installed and the version for the driver is 13.2.7.3You can download the touchpad driver from the mentioned below web link.http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_1959.html After this go to Control Panel, open Mouse category then Synaptic/Alps  and then Touchpad Settings and check for "Tapping" option.  Also, like to share with you that if you want to disable the complete touchpad then you can do it with Fn+F8 key.

Until mid-December I had the Synaptics Touchpad 'tap to click' disabled. Then it somehow became enabled , the right-click menu item to change it greyed out and the mouse properties, settings etc contain no reference to it. It has been suggested that Windows Updates somehow interfered. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling touchpad drivers both directly from Synaptics and from the Toshiba site, but it hasn't helped. Apart from using the recovery disk and reformatting what can I do?

Just bought my Satellite P50-C-18k laptop yesterday - I do not like having tap to click as it seems to be over sensitive and accidentally selects various links as I move the cursor around.
So a simple task - how to disable tap to click on the touchpad - or seriously reduce the sensitivity.

I have of course gone to control panel and unchecked all of the various multiple finger options etc for the touchpad/Elan. I have also had a look at the mouse options but nothing obvious there. I downloaded the touchpad driver from the Toshiba website but that made no difference.

I noticed an earlier thread where people were messing around with the registry but on a different model so i dont really want to try that on my new laptop but if someone can confirm if thats suitable for use with Windows 10 (anniversary updated) 64 bit on the P50_C_18K I will give it a go.

The website is pretty frustrating - with Yoko offering tips that are not really helpful and no obvious way to make a quick phone call for support.

Hello forum. I want to disable the function called tab click on the touchpad. Tab click means that a click on the touchpad works like an click on the left mouse botton. The Synaptics driver should support an disable function. But this feature is not integrated in the driver i can download for the N200.  And install the driver i can download from the Synaptics themself will disable the working of the whole touchpad. Does anybody know where to get an driver for the touchpad which work on N200 an allow to disable the tab click function. TIA Andreas Riedel

Just do a double-clic at icon of Synaptics near digital clock, then go to tab device setup (with the synaptics icon), do clic at values... clic at "touch" on left and uncheck "enable fast touch" then ok. Sorry if the options doesn't match due to translation of my spanish system.

I have been trying to disable this wretched tap to click function for weeks without success. I HATE TAP TO CLICK!! whoever invented this stupid function should be banned from using a computer for all eternity. Ok, anyway, someone please help me. I have read all the forums and scoured the internet and still no success. I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, recently upgraded to Windows 7. I installed the Alps electric driver and i still cant disable the tap to click function. Did i install the wrong Alps driver? First i installed this driver from dell.com R227995 because i read on a forum that it worked for someone. When it didnt work for me i rolled back the driver and then simply went to update driver via the properties and hardware tab in the control panel and updated the driver automatically. It installed the Alps driver again. Still can not disable tap to click. Somebody please tell me what im doing wrong. My scroll function also doesnt work and i would like to regain this functionality.

Answer:Installed Alps touchpad driver- Still cant disable tap to click!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!

Well, I too struggled with trying to disable tap-to-click functionality for a few hours.  But, I finally came to find a very simple solution.  I have a Dell Latitude E5410 with an Alps touchpad installed and it seems to have the latest drivers.  But, for some reason there was no Touchpad administration GUI that I could find anywhere.  I could find one to administer mouse options, but not touchpad ones.  At first after searching around I was getting the impression the Alps touchpad just didn't have a way to disable tap to click and that I'd have to install a new driver or something!  But, that didn't make much sense.  (Just goes to show, don't always believe everything you read.)  After searching for replacement drivers for a long time, I gave up on that idea and looked for a way to change settings in the registry.  I saw some things there under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alps\Apoint\Tapping but I wasn't sure what to modify exactly.  Then researching this I started to think maybe there was an INI file somewhere I could change to modify settings. Finally, I looked in the following path...  C:\Program Files\DellTPad ... and in this folder I saw a file there called "DellTpad.exe".  When I double-clicked this to run that program I then saw TouchPad Settings and clicked that.  Under "Taps" there was a checkbox to disable "Tap to Click... Dear Support,
I have a Dell VOSTRO 3560 laptop that has an Elan Tech SmartPad touchpad. I like its responsiveness very much.
Unfortunately, I recently spilled a bit of coffee and some of that went under the touch pad left and right buttons. The buttons stopped functioning but the touch pad itself is still very good.
Even before the spill I rarely used the buttons. I always used the touch pad to tap to click and two finger tap to right-click.Strangely though, after the spill when the hardware buttons stopped working, the tapping on the touch pad also stopped working. I made sure that the touch pad still can do tap clicking by uninstalling the Dell TouchPad driver and reverting to the Microsoft Mouse PS2 driver. In that case I can use the tap to click feature but only for 1 finger tap. I do not get any other feature as the driver is the simple generic MS one.
My question is would it be possible to still use the Elan tech provided (Dell TouchPad) driver and somehow configure it to accept the tap to click and two finger tap to right-click? This in addition to all the remaining scrolling and gesture support that the driver implements? I tried all the Dell Touchpad settings applet but nothing changed. Perhaps a registry value setting in the section for the elantech?
What seems to be happening now is that the driver is doing some hardware diagnostics, determining that the hardware buttons left and right are not working, and consequently completely disabling left and right click comm... Read more

I have the X1 Carbon Touch thinkpad with Windows 8 and I just noticed that I need to click on the touchpad real hard for the click to register. Tapping works fine but clicking requires me to apply a lot of pressure. I have restored the default settings of the touchpad and still have this problem. Are there any known issues with Touchpad click issues and requiring a hard presss?

Answer:X1 Carbon touchpad requires a hard touchpad press and click for click to register

Hi, vtjiggy

Does this apply to the entire TrackPad? Do both left and right-clicking require a great deal of force? You could also try installing the latest Synapatics driver and see if that helps at all. Synaptics is the company that develops UltraNav, which is installed on all ThinkPad systems by default. The latest driver can be found here.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes,
Adam

My new Asus K52J laptop with Windows 7 has an Elan touchpad. I cannot disable the "tap to click" option, despite unchecking the enable box in the mouse settings.

I have used touchpads for years and comes as second nature so please don't suggest using a mouse.

I have updated the drivers but still the touchpad will not accept the "off" setting for "tap to click".

Many thanks in advance if you know of an answer.

I purchased a T440s a few months ago. Suddenly I am unable to right click on my touchpad in order to open drop down menus, where they are available,or to right click while highlighting text? I manage to do this if  I click on a specific spot around the bottom, middle of the touchpad, but this takes a lot of fiddling around in order to get the precise spot that happens to work.  It is certainly not a practical solution.  Does this sound like a physical hardware issue, that I need to bring my laptop to the depot for, or might this be something else that can be addressed within my settings or some sort of update?   Has anybody else had this specific problem?   Thanks!

Answer:suddenly right click not work on t440s touchpad, only awkward middle click

For the sake of troubleshooting, I should add that when I connect a mouse it works fine but, of course, this too is not a practical mobile solution.  A response from someone from Lenovo on this site, in particular, would be appreciated.

It's right-click button and double-tap to right click function isn't working as intended; the left-click button and single-tap to left click function is working ok. I tried reinstalling the driver from the Dell website and it's still not working properly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My son has just purchased a Satellite P850 laptop to use for school work and gaming and has noticed a problem with the behaviour of the touchpad.

When using the touchpad, if you have one finger in the area of the touchpad used for mouse movement, and then try to click the right hand mouse button, the laptop behaves as if you clicked the left mouse button. If you click the right hand mouse button when you are not touching the mouse movement area, it behaves correctly.

We have tried changing various touchpad settings but have not been able to correct this problem. We have also updated the drivers for the touchpad to the latest version from the Synaptics website, but the problem still exists.

Is there a particular driver or setting that gives the correct behaviour of the right hand mouse button whilst still touching the touchpad with the other finger?

Answer:Satellite P850 - Right click on touchpad acting like a left click

> When using the touchpad, if you have one finger in the area of the touchpad used for mouse >movement, and then try to click the right hand mouse button, the laptop behaves as if you clicked >the left mouse button
Sorry but I use touchpad too but in moment when I use one of the touchpad buttons I don?t touch touchpad area at this moment. I have two Toshiba notebooks and I tried to test this on both of them but none of them react on the way described in your posting.

As far as I know such behaviour can be result of ?confused? touchpad.
>... when you are not touching the mouse movement area, it behaves correctly.
In my opinion it is the right way to use touchpad correctly. I don?t think you can change anything using some other touchpad driver. Preinstalled driver is tested and I think the right one.

Press Win+W to bring up Settings Search
Type "synaptic"
Double Click "SmartSense"
Slide the Slider all the way to "Off"
Click "Close" and then "OK"

This will Disable the Anti-Palm detection which prevents simultaneous Keyboard and Mouse use. I recommend you re-enable this feature when you're not gaming as otherwise you risk problems while typing.

Hello community,

I've recently purchases a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 540 and it worked just fine untill earlyer today (bought it around mid June). While i was browsing the internet, some how my touchpad developed a problem. It only registeres right click where ever i click.I've deleted the drivers, even tho they were the knewest ones, downloaded a fresh .exe and installed it after the reset and what not and it still has the same problem. If i turn off the touchpad in the ultranav software and enable only trackapad, the buttons work like they should, the large area in the touchpad registeres as the left click and the small area in the top right is registered as the right click. Tho i can't use the touchpad for navigation.
So clicking doesn't works, well neither does tapping. I can doubletap normaly, but i cannot tap and drag such as selecting a block of text.
Again, i've already tried a fresh install of ultranav drivers and it didn't work. The problem manifested itself during normal browsing, nothing was installed nor changed hardware vise. It litteraly changed in a second. It's a really strange problem and i have no idea how to solve it since the driver reinstall didn't work.

I appreciate any help, thanks.

Build 14316
So I came home after a long day to find that my laptop was registering my left clicks as right clicks for some reason.
In case you're wondering; nope I did not install anything recently unless you count a security update pushed by MS, but I doubt that's what caused this, because I installed that yesterday and the laptop was working fine until 30 minutes ago.
Solution?
Keep in mind that since your mouse/touchpad isn't working properly, you'll be working with the arrow + "enter" keys to do all of this.
Head into settings (win + i key combo) > Devices > Mouse & touchpad
This will open the Mouse options window, but to get to the options you need to scroll down to the last option on the left side of the window ( using the arrow keys obviously) which is "USB" then hit the "tab" key and you should jump to the actual Mouse options.
If done correctly the box under "select your primary button" should be highlighted. So now all you have to do is hit enter and select "left"
Bit of a crude explanation. Hope you can follow it, but if you have any questions go ahead and ask.
Just thought I should post this in case anyone else runs into this

here's my problem

i have this application that i use and i don't want it to get interrupted because when i move my mouse outside of the app, i use right click alot, in this app, the program gets minimized due to the contextmenu settings appearing, (normally when you click right click on your screen you'll get a pop up screen) That's what i'm talkin' about.

Are there any programs out there, or do you happen to know of any ways that i could make it so that it would Lock this App, and not have any interruptance from this.

i would like to just disable both right click and left click, and not have the app be minimized as this completely messes up my work that i do, in this windowed application.

I sure hope you have an answer for me, thanks.

i have this application that i use and i don't want it to get interrupted because when i move my mouse outside of the app, i use right click alot, in this app, the program gets minimized due to the contextmenu settings appearing, (normally when you click right click on your screen you'll get a pop up screen) That's what i'm talkin' about.

Are there any programs out there, or do you happen to know of any ways that i could make it so that it would Lock this App, and not have any interruptance from this.

i would like to just disable both right click and left click, and not have the app be minimized as this completely messes up my work that i do, in this windowed application.

I sure hope you have an answer for me, thanks.

bye

Hello, I actually have in forder options "Single-click to open an item (point to select).
I really like it because I can open folders with just one click but I don't like (point to select). I like one click to select a file and double clik for open it.
?There is any way that enables one click for opening folders and one click to select files / two for run files?
There is any option at least for disabling the (point to select) option?.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Disable auto-click but enable just one click for folder

Welcome!

Not sure what you're asking. How would you select a folder, if clicking on it opened it, and pointing at it did nothing?

I'm so frustrated I'm about to throw the laptop into the wall. I keep disabling the touchpad tapping from the mouse ultranav settings on this t430u but it doesn't get disabled. As I keep working, the mouse keeps getting tapped and destroying everything and slowing me down.  Even tried disabling the touchpad altogether but it keeps on working.  Whats wrong? What can I do to reverse this ? I'm on windows 8 pro of course

Answer:Can't disable the tapping on the touchpad or even the touchpad itself on the T430u?

What I do is install ThinkPad touchpad driver and uninstall thinkpad touchpad utility.  You may need to go to an older version of the driver, as Lenovo obviously doesn't bother with regression testing when releasing updated drivers.

Hi
Running Win10 on an Acer E5-511-C46Y.
I have an Elantech touchpad which every so often (maybe weekly) decides it's no longer going to do tap to click (my preferred setting) and is going to behave as though I am clicking and dragging the whole time. So I have to click instead of tap. It's mighty annoying.
I have done all the obvious things - driver up to date, BIOS version is the latest, settings are fine and disabling/enabling has no impact. The only cure seems to be turning the computer off and on again (who knew?!)
Acer say reset, but suspect that's the recommendation for every unsolved issue.
Is there a way to restart touchpad and reload all the drivers (essentially, to do what the laptop would do when rebooting) but without restarting?
Many thanks in advance...

Dell 2-in-1 3147:
The "DELL Pointing Devices" dialog shows a "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" checkbox. If this checkbox is clear, the touchpad works properly. When this checkbox is marked, the touchpad does not work at all.
I have tried both USB and Bluetooth mice, and neither one allows the proper action: the touchpad should be enabled without a mouse, and the touchpad should be disabled with a mouse.  That's how it works on other systems.  It just doesn't work at all on this system.
I suspect there is some interaction between the touchpad and the touchscreen that is interfering with this setting.  But I have another laptop with a touchpad and a touchscreen, and the mouse detection works there (it's not a DELL).
Yes, I have toyed with the idea of deleting the DELL touchpad control application and installing a "stock" Synaptics touchpad driver.  But I don't want the DELL  "update" app to overwrite it with the DELL touchpad control app every time it sees "the wrong driver" loaded.  And I don't want to take the chance that the touchpad driver and the touchscreen driver are somehow linked together, thus disabling one when I disable the other.
Any ideas on how to get the "Disable Touchpad when USB Mouse Present" action working would be welcome.

I was wondering whether this is an easy fix or a common issue. Posting from New Zealand but the support over here is pretty attrocious and havent received an email reply for a few days so thought id see if anyone else had similar issues. Was done by a professional so I am wondering why it doesnt work and maybe if he just didnt screw some stuff back up right.

Question: Disable Touchpad

I'm looking to disable the touchpad from within windows. I can disable in BIOS but would rather do it from within windows. Most drivers have an option in device manager to disable but the touchpad doesn't. Presently, Microsoft has installed it's official Windows 95 driver with it's updated version number, date and digital signature. Another option would be Synaptics driver but I'm not really into downloading and installing 14 mb's just to disable the touchpad. On the other hand, if I could get just the synaptics driver without the extra bloat, it might would work. Any ideas or suggestions?

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite. I didn't download anything nor change any drivers yesterday and I have no clue what to do next. I suspect I'll need to disable a driver, but I don't know how to know which driver it is nor how to disable it once found. Thanks very much for any/all help.

Question: disable touchpad?

PLEASE can someone tell me in words of one syllable how to disable the touchpad on my Toshiba L450D without taking it apart and disconnecting it? I installed a wireless Microsoft mouse (superb) and now cannot get past the intellipoint mouse properties in order to disable the touchpad. The cursor flying all over place drives me NUTS. But what's the point of having a flexible portable laptop if I have to constantly take a wireless mouse everywhere? NO, FnF9 does not work either despite being labelled as being able to do so.

Answer:disable touchpad?

Hello Ian Rigby. Welcome to the Forum.

Normally that is quite easy:

Right-click on Synaptics Pointing Device icon on the Taskbar > pointing device properties > device settings tab > disable synaptics touchpad > apply > ok

If you do not have the Synaptics icon available then search for Synaptics from the Start search box.

Just got new yoga thinkpad ultrabook at work and i cannot turn off the touchpad.  the f6 trick doesnt work and i tried every combo of FN keys to be sure. IT installed the thinkpad software that gives you al the options in mouse properties but there is no button to turn off the touch pad. closest i can come is "use trackpoint only" and even then, if you press down on the pad it clicks. i was able to uncheck most boxes so most of the incidental issues while typing go away but i still do rest my palms on there and i have issues. i'm convinced its some kind of driver issue but maybe not? driver is synaptics 18.0.7.103 under synaptics device properties under device manager the only thing is synaptics pointing device and no option to disable it even when IT was on as admin.

....if a USB mouse is present?

My users have Dell Latitude D630s with Synaptics Touchpads. They run Windows 7 Pro x86, and I was wondering if there's a setting/option/app that will disable the touchpad if a USB mouse was connected to the system. Many moons ago, the touchpads would be disabled when a PS/2 mouse was connected, but I haven't come across that functionality with USB mice.

Answer:Disable Touchpad...

I'm assuming the option isn't being displayed under:

Control panel> Mouse > Device Settings tab > Check the "Disable internal pointing device when external USB device is attached"

It depends on what Synaptics driver software is installed for that option to appear though.

I finally figured out how to disable my touchpad. I tried everything I've read on these forums, but nothing worked. No matter how many times I double-clicked the little dot on the top-left corner of my touchpad, the light would not come on, and I could not disable the stupid touchpad. To fix this, I downloaded the newest version of the touchpad driver from HP.com for my laptop. After installing the driver, my computer rebooted, and then I was finally able to double-click the little dot on the top-left corner of my touchpad, and it was disabled!  So now the cursor no longer jumps around all over the page as I am typing (b/c my hand barely touches the touchpad).  YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! I hope this helps anyone else going through this struggle. It took me several hours to figure this out today.  Amy

Hi
Just got a new HP Pavilion Notebook. I didn't like using the touchpad, so I plugged in a mouse. Then, I went to the Control Panel and TRIED to disable the touchpad. The mouse works great, but the touchpad keeps enabling itself again. You can probably disable it, but need to know which service runs for it. Open a command window and type the following at the prompt: sc queryex > c:\services.txt

then attach the services.txt file in your c:\ folder here.

Hi

I have an Advent 7204 laptop running Vista Premium. It's one problem is the touchpad. Double tapping the touchpad is the same as clicking one of the mouse buttons which is infuriating as it happens frequently when I don't want it to whilst typing!!!

I'd like to disable this feature but cannot find any option for it (I can't even seem to disable the touchpad entirely and use a mouse instead?!?!). None of the Fn buttons seem to do it and there is nothing in my system tray.

Anyone ideas greatly appreciated...!

Anyone know how I can disable the touchpad ? It has never worked properly on this machine - too long list of problems to get into... I tried the function hot keys - that does not work. I reinstalled the Hot Key drivers Fn F8 still does not work to turn off trackpad I went into BIOS and the trackpad option does not even showup under Mouse/Pointing Devices. Lenovo tech support has no idea (they can't fgure out why the hot key does not work and the BIOS does not list...) Anyone???

Answer:How to Disable Touchpad

I would assume that you are using a Thinkpad Edge, as that is the forum you posted it in. If you are using a thinkpad edge, then you have Lenovo Ultranav. If these are true, then here is how you disable the trackpad: 1) Click the start button.2) Click "Control Panel"3) Click "Hardware and Sound"4) Under the top heading, which is "Devices and Printers" click on the link "Mouse".5) In the diolog box that opens, click the tab that says "UltraNav"6) There will be two sections, one for the TrackPoint and one for the TouchPad (Trackpad). Uncheck the box next to the words "Enable TouchPad". I hope this helps. Thanks,SonofNun

I have a new HP Pavilion 17-g101dx with a Logitech mouse installed.

My problem, shared by numerous people, is that I cannot keep the touchpad
disabled. On restart it comes back on.

The cure seems to be dowloading driver 19.0.19.1 from Synaptics's website.
I download it and unzip then run the exe file and it says it is installed but
when I go back to the Device Manager it does not list the correct driver
number. This is after I do the required restart.

I have even uninstalled the driver which does no good.

Any suggestions.

I do not like the touch pad. When I had Windows 8.1, I simply disabled it. But Windows 10 has a mind of it's own. I go into settings for touch pad and put a check mark where it says "disable touch pad". But as soon as I restart, the touch is enabled. I go where I put the check mark and it's gone--Windows just un-checked it. There are a couple of places where I can disable it, but upon restarting it goes back to where it was. I even went in Device Manager and disabled it there, but the same thing happens.

Hello. Long time no see. My mom has a Gateway mx-3230 laptop that she only wants to use a mouse on. The computer has had a fresh install of XP SP3, and I'm unable to disable the touchpad so she will only have mouse control of the computer.

I've gone into device manager and seen that the only things listed under mouse is the usb mouse that she wants to use, and an item for Microsoft PS2 device. The mouse can be disabled using the "usage" feature at the bottom of the screen. But when I switch to the PS2 listing, "usage" is ghosted out and I can't change that setting. So presently, both the mouse and the touchpad are functioning.

I'm not at her house right now, and can't run SIW etc. to find out the particular touchpad info. Until I can do that, does anyone have a suggestion for disabling only the touchpad? Thanks. Jim

Answer:Disable touchpad in XP

Laptops which don't automatically disable the trackpad when you plug a mouse in usually have a 'switch' in the form of the Fn key and one of the 'F' keys. Look for a key that has a representation of a mouse or a trackpad on it or even both. I've seen all three variants. And I can't tell you which 'F' key it will be on, this is one aspect of keyboards that is not standardised !

When you do find the relevant key, press and hold the 'Fn' key and press the relevant 'F' key at the same time, then let go. You should get some notification that the trackpad is disabled and it should stay that way until you press the same key combination to switch back at some future time.

I take it that you are referring to a laptop or a notebook. Check your user manual for details on how to enable/disable the touchpad. As you have not provided any details on your machine (manufacturer, model number), I cannot help you any further as the method used varies. If you reply with the necessary details, I should be able locate some instructions for you.

Question: Disable Touchpad??

I am thinking that maybe my wife is touching the touch pad while she types. However, I can't find any way to disable the touch pad. Under Device manager, the only thing showing is the USB mouse. Same in Control panel, only the USB mouse is shown. No icon for the touch pad in the tray. Anyone have an idea?

Answer:Disable Touchpad??

Yup. She is most definitely hitting the touchpad while typing. And while it isn't a problem that the mouse moves around. It is that "Tap to Click" is enabled. I had to download some really old synaptic mouse driver, since the driver windows wanted to give me wouldn't let me disable it.

I take it you have a USB mouse plugged in.

Have you tried unplugging it and checking the Device Manager to see what it says?

Hi, I'm having trouble with my moms PC (Acer laptop). Right clicking is not working, but left click is working fine.

I went to the trackpad settings and first checked that "Use two fingers to right click" was checked, and it was. Then I tried checking the other option called something like "Press in the lower right corner of the trackpad to right click". Here's where the fun started. Now I was ONLY able to right click. Didn't matter where on the trackpad I pressed - always gave me a right click... So had to use TAB and spacebar to disable that option again lol.

Tried going to the real control panel (i.e. the old classic one) and checked the mouse options... didn't have anything about right clicking in there. And there is no driver-specific tab there. I remember when wetting up the computer a year ago that it was impossible to find drivers that gave a tab there. So I'm stuck with the Windows 10 settings panel.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Welcome to the TenForums.

Not sure what is happening but you are second to post problem in last few hours. I would try to roll back driver.

If this works you may wish to disable Window driver updates.

Stop Windows Updating Drivers
Right click on Windows Start
Click on Control Panel
Click on System and Security
Click on System
Click on Advance system settings
Click on Hardware tab
Click on Device Installation Settings
Click on No
A menu appears (first time) click Never Install driver software.
You may get a warning. Click the option that says I?ll take care of it (not exact words)

The other thread is in the General Support section.

Please post back in Rolling Back work.

Hi all,I replaced my power supply to upgrade from 250w to 480w.  I carefully unplugged the old and re-plugged the new (after unplugging power source) and when I confidently turned everything back on the hard drive seems not to work.  there's a faint beep but I'm not sure if it's the POST beep or not.  (I have a vague understanding of that)Instead, the hard drive clicks quite clearly and it clicks 4x then pauses, then 4x, pause, etc, etc. I tried re-plugging the old power supply back in and get the same result.   The computer screen just stays blank the whole time.Did my hard drive just die at that point?   Could switching ps cause the hd to die?a few facts:I do touch the computer case before I stick my hands in there to remove static charge.HD is western digital caviar 40g  WD400Computer is 3ghz P4 running xp with sp3replacement power supply says it's for a P4 and it fits perfectly where the old one came out, same connections etc.I have a 160g drive on it's way from Ebay that I intended to replace this drive with anyway and I have the 40g drive backed up on an external so it's not a disaster but it sure is an inconvenience.I'm ready to try hitting it on the side (percussive maintenance) but thought I'd try a post first. :-)Thanks,John

Answer:western digital hard drive "click,click,click,click...pause...click,etc

try a different power connector to the hard drive. I take it the machine doesn't post, then? If not, it could be something else.Does everything work again when you use the old PSU?

I would like to disable tap to click on the touchpad.  I always use the click on the bottom of the touchpad and the tap to click just leads to a bunch of misclicks. In the toucpad settings I can find options to disable 2-finger tap to click, 3-finger, or 4-finger, but none of these affect 1-finger tap to click, which I cannot find an option for.

I had the touch pad disabled on my asus N76V when an external mouse was connected - which is 99% of the time. It was pretty simple in my mouse settings.
Since installing W10 it no longer shuts off. I even went so far as following an instruction to go into startup and disabling a setting.
When i use the key board I continuously move the pointer all over the key board and at time click it by accident.

thank you for your help.
Richard

Answer:Asus touchpad how do i disable

Short: Install an incompatible driver for Standard Mouse, restart, then you can disable it, but it should not work already.

Open Device Manager (Right click Start) - Mice and other ... - PS2 Compatible Mouse - double click - Driver - Update.
Browse my computer for driver software - Let me pick ... - uncheck Show compatible hardware - Pick anything else - Next.

I just bought this laptop from a friend and it had windows 10 on it but it was being really slow. So, I put Windows 7 on it. Speed as improved. Now I can't figure out how to disable the touchpad because I have a wireless mouse hooked up. I have the touchpad with the LED in the top left corner. Double-clicking used to enable/disable it when Windows 10 was on it. Now, it doesn't do anything when I do that. The light is off. I tried to go into Device Manager to find the touchpad but I can't find it.

Starting with Win 8.1, there is no Lenovo driver for the Elan touchpad. It's provided directly by the Win 8.1 OS.Now, in previous OS, I could deactivate easily the touchpad, by entering in Mouse applet from Control Panel. Now, this procedure isn't available. More than that, in PC settings>PC and devices there is a Mouse and touchpad option, but not sliders for On/Off as should be.So, how can we disable the touchpad? Screenshot
