thinkpad edge 14 wireless radio won't turn on

Question: thinkpad edge 14 wireless radio won't turn on

Thinkpad decided to turn off my wireless radio and own't let me turn it back on. Let me just say that whoever's brilliant idea that was should be fired on the spot. Before you send me to update all the drivers, stop. Already did that per this post: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/Thinkpad-Edge-14-0578RD4-WLAN-Driver-Issues/m-p/4... Every one of my function buttons works except for F9 or even Fn + F9. I do not see a radio switch anywhere on this thing either. Please help. It's running Windows 7 x64.

Preferred Solution: thinkpad edge 14 wireless radio won't turn on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey guys I'm having some issues with my ThinkPad Edge 15. I just reinstalled a clean version of Windows 7 Pro, without all the lenovo "tools". (Maybe that's the problem..?). Everything seems ok so far - apart from the wireless connection: I tried connecting to my wireless network via the Windows Network and Sharing Center. "Not connected". I ran Troubleshoot: "Turn on wireless capability: Use the switch on the front or side of the computer..."There is no such switch. It's enabled in the BIOS, though. Then I installed the Intel WiFiPRO whatever-manager: "Wireless disabled. Please turn on wireless radio switch." There is no such switch. Ok, so I uninstalled the Intel Wireless Manager again. Next attempt: The ThinkVantage Access Connections tool. "Enable Wireless switch". Phew. The only key/switch/whatever that seems remotely related to Wireless is the F9 key with the little antenna on it. Pressing it has no effect. So I installed the Lenovo Hotkey thingy. Pressing the F9 key now results in a pop-up: "Please turn on wireless radio switch". I'm out of ideas here. Anyone knows help?

Until Yesterday my laptop was working fine without any issues. Today it will not turn on!!!!. I tried the following steps: 1- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the battery back in and pushed the power button, but it will not turn on. 2- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the AC adapter (without battery) and push the power button and still not working. Even if AC power adapter is connected, the Power-status indicator is off.  My warranty expired last month and lenovo support told me that I am out of luck. I read that some batches of faulty EEPROM chips are used in the Edge series. Is there any way to check if my chip is in the list? I hope lenovo laptops lasts more than their one year warranty period. Just read the threadE420 motherboard problems          I will try to post this info in all other tech forums i know of so that atleast it may save someone's else money and time.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E40 will not turn on

E40 machines and E420 are different machines. What affected the E420 doesn't affect the Edge E40.Edge E40 was a rebadged Edge 14 series, which is an older generation Edge 14 inch laptop.

I just installed a new pair of RAM this afternoon. After that the notebook does not turn on. Tried removing both the memories. But still the same.  It is not sending any beeps or anything, just black screen. Even my motherboard does not turn on. Is there any way to reset the power? I have tried the traditional power reset method of thinkpads. But nothing worked. Your help will be appreciated.

I cannot turn on my wireless radio. My kids were using the laptop within arms reach playing Wizard 101 when it lost connection. It did not appear to be a hardware issue since the laptop was just sitting on the table at the time, but I am not ruling it out. I uninstalled the hardware and reinstalled with no luck. I ran a Hijack This log as follows:EDIT: HJT log removed, no indication of malware, HJT logs not to be used for system troublehooting of system issues, logs not permitted in Vista forum ~ Hamluis. Please let me know what I need to do to isolate the problem. When I hardwire into the router, I have no problems. Also other wireless devices do not have problems connecting. I try to turn on the wireless radio and it never seems to turn on. I changed some settings to not allow the radio to be turned off, but that did not help either. Please let me know what I need to do. Thank youEdit: Sorry the computer is a Lenovo laptop with Vista Home Premium SP2. Pentium dual-core T4200 @2GHz, 3GB RAM. I do not appear to be having any other problems. It could be hardware, but I am having a hard time figuring it out.

I shut it down as usual last night, and now it won't turn on. No lights come on aside from the power supply cord light, and no sounds either. I've tried it plugged in, without the battery, and plugged in, with the battery. Any hope?Edit: used a multimeter on the power adapter, got some strange readings. Hopefully it's just the adapter then.

Answer:FAN DOES NOT TURN ON!!!!! ThinkPad Edge 14 0578N8U

mfk237, welcome to the forum,

sorry to hear about your experience, from your very limited description it certainly seems as though you may have a thermal problem or a faulty fan.

Could you maybe describe, with a little less emotion, exactly what you are experiencing? If possible please describe the circumstances / where, when etc. that the problem occurs.

There is no denying that it is also possible that the fan has failed, maybe you could contact support and discuss your experiences with them.

thanks in advance

Hello, I am unable to turn on my wireless radio, I can turn on the Bluetooth radio with no problem. The system is a T61P 6457-8LU with Vista Ultimate. It uses a 4965AG wireless. All drivers and software is up to date, the BIOS is up to date as well  ( 08MAY2008 3pm EST ) The hardware radio switch is ON. Device Manager reports no problems. FN+F5 opens the correct screen and I can click to the ON button for the wireless radio, but nothing happens. Tried reboot with no change. This is the first time I have tried to use the wireless on this laptop, I have been using a wired ethernet connection before this. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Best Regards Michael

Answer:T61P Wireless Radio will not turn ON

I have the exact same problem In addition, I have experienced problems with DNS prior to this.  I can have msn messanger, my email and my web browsers all working but all of a sudden it would seem that DNS lookup failed. My applications that are currently connected to the internet would continue to function but any new attempts to browse the internet would result in "page not displayed" as if the DNS server had stopped answering. It is not an ISP problem - it happens on the train, at work, at home, at the customers site.  The problem is local to the computer.  I have suspicions that is has something to do with VMwares virtual network drivers. Anyway, after the latest bios update and removing vmware completely from my system - i cannot turn on radio. I went in via safe mode and deleted all my network drivers/cards and started effectively from scratch.  No luck.

I have a T500 with an AT&T wireless WAN card.  There is an AT&T SIM card in the SIM card slot, but when I attempt to use Access Connections to "Power On Wireless WAN Radio" ... nothing happens.  It just remains in an "Off" state.  If I try to use the "Mobile Broadband Connect" tool it attempts to use Access Connections to bring the device on-line, but fails after a couple of minutes of trying ... presumably it's failing to power the radio on. The "Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband Minicard Network Adapter" device shows up as "Working" in device manager", and I have a corresponding and enabled network adapter which uses that device, but of course it shows up as "Network cable unplugged". I'm running Vista Business x64 with Vista SP2 installed, and have already made sure that all my T500 drivers / BIOS etc are up to date. Anyone seen this before, or have any suggestions? Moderator note: Type added to subject line for clarity. My wife's Edge E520 has the "won't turn on problem". Before I return it to the service centre I would like to back-up the hard disk. What is the best way. I have an Edge 15.Can I just move the Hard Drive across to the 15 and run back-up? Or would I be better to get an external disk case for a 2.5 SATA drive and put the disk in that and back it up from there. Any advice would be appreciated. I am always wary after one service centre wiped my daughters disk for a keyboard change!

Either way will be okay. But using the external drive option will be the preferred option, as you wont have the driver reinstallation problem.

Then I turned off the computer by accident with a hard shut down (Held power off button really long).Turned it on today and wireless didn't work. Turned out to be the wireless radio that was off. I tried turning the wireless radio on through the taskbar, the wireless options that Vista shows, as well as Fn+F5 but none of them worked. I tried flipping the wireless switch off and on, as well as flipping it off restarting and then flipping it on. Hi all,

I have a Lenovo R3000 N100 that has an odd problem. The laptop recognizes that the Broadcom wireless network card is there, but it won't pick up any networks. I've figured out that the wireless transmitter isn't powered on, but I can't get it to turn on!

I've tried using the lenovo wireless update utility with no luck. The Broadcom utility offers me the option to turn the power on, but to no avail. When I press Fn+F5 I also see the option to turn the power on to the transmitter, but it doesn't do anything. I made sure the wireless button is turned on in the front of the computer (which it is) and I also checked the BIOS incase something there was related to the wireless card, but there was nothing.

I also ran the Lenovo system update utility and downloaded updates for the computer, but that didn't help things either. I'm stuck and I can't figure out what's going on! The device manager says this is working properly, too. Have I overlooked anything?

Thanks!

Christian

Hi Shlomi1204,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Wifi on your ThinkPad Edge E330.

The warning indicates that Wifi is not enabled, and to enable it you have to press FN+F9 simultaneously. When you press this key, a list of wireless features is displayed. You can quickly change the state of each feature on the list.

Notes: If you want to use this button to enable or disable the wireless features, the following device driversmust be installed on your computer beforehand:

Power Management driver
Onscreen Display Utility
Wireless device drivers

For detailed information on the wireless features, refer to ?Wireless connections? on page 29 from the user guide.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I'm attempted to get a wireless PCI adapter working in a friend's computer. The card is a D-Link DWL-510, and the computer runs Windows ME (ugh!).

I decided to start from scratch and uninstall the drivers, phyically remove the card, reinstall the drivers/utility and then install card again and have it auto detected.

After doing all that and getting it installed, the system tray utility (D-Link Air Utility) has an "x" through it and says Wireless PCI Adapter radio off! I have no idea how to turn radio on. I can't find anything in the configuation utility, there's absolutely nothing in the manual about it and I cannot find anything on google for enabling the radio on for this card.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have been using the T400 for about a year and I have this problem of disconnecting from my broadband out of the blue. It disconnects for no reason and every time it disconnects, It can't seem to detect and connect to any networks when my broadband is on. Also, the Fn+F5 functions seem to screw up after it disconnect, it does not show me the option of turning on the bluetooth and wireless radio when i press it and when it does, nothing happens when i click the 'turn on' option for the wireless radio.  In addition, the access connections hangs when I start it up after it disconnects. I have tried turning on and off the switch for the wireless radio at the bottom left-hand corner of the laptop but to no avail. The only thing to get it working is to reboot the system and hope that it does not disconnects again. My current system is 5300 and my version of access connections is 5.33.

We have a T42 Laptop with an Internal Intel 2200bg Wireless Card. The user needs to be able to use LEAP and until recently, IBM Access Connections was not installed. I updated to the most up to date driver from IBM and installed the latest Access Connections.  Now, the light for the wireless comes on, it states the wireless is on in the Driver settings, but the Access Connections and the System (fn-f5) all state the radio is OFF.  When I attempt to turn on the Radio.  It will think for a few seconds and then nothing. It will stay off. Currently the user is unable to use the wireless card. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Answer:T42, Intel 2200bg Wireless Radio won't turn on in Access Connections

I have encountered the same problem on my T42 with an Intel 2200bg wireless card ever since I downloaded updates from ThinkVantage System Update on 3/29/2008. I have not found a fix on the Lenovo web site but it seems to be a software problem.

I have 3 thinkpads that after a fresh reload are unable to connect to wireless networks. I have gone through and installed the different wireless drivers on the lenovo support website. I have gone through several steps of similar problems others have had but it hasn't made a difference. I have installed: HotKeys & patchPower manager & driverChipsetThe realtek network -ethernet adapter and communications LAN driverI have installed and removed each wireless adapter available Thinkpad Edge 15Type: 0319-46U On a side note in the Device manager screen there is a "Network Controller" alert saying no driver installed for this device. I have determined it is some Realtek device but beyond that I am lost.

I just purchased a Thinkpad Edge E530c 33662UU Laptop.  I have had it for one day now and it will not connect to my wireless network.   My wife is currently online with her laptop so the router is working (although I did reset it anyhow).  I ran troubleshoot and it didn't fix anything.  My network is showing up under available networks and it says I'm connected.  But it also says no internet access.  Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge Wireless connectivity issue

Hi, trevclark

I have a few questions that will help in resolving this issue:

What operating system are you running? Also, what computer and operating system is your wife using? What type of router are you using?

Also, I would recommend making sure all the drivers and software for your machine is up to date, which can all be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

This laptop has a 1x1 11bgn lan card in it and I'm only getting from 24 to 48 mbps.  How can I get to connect at higher rates. Thanks,  Jerry

Answer:e520 thinkpad edge low wireless mbps

It depends on how close you are to the router and how strong the connection is. If you're far away or there's a lot of interference, the connection speed will automatically drop to ensure data integrity. You may want to see if your access point is operating in 802.11g mode.

I just picked up an Edge 14 and had to reset it from Windows 7 x64 to  Windows 7 x32.  All the drivers have picked up except for the wireless driver.   The technical specs list the wireless card as Wireless NIC: ThinkPad 11 b/g/n so in theory it should be this driver: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS000979 but Windows says that the driver is incorrect.  I've checked the BIOS and the wireless card is enabled and F9 also shows that the wireless is enabled.  I've tried the rest of the drivers in the matrix in case I had the wrong one but none of them worked either.  Any ideas?

Hi, nicholas89

How was your machine reformatted? Did you reinstall Windows with recovery media?

You can try, if you haven't already, to update the drivers from Device Manager. If you right-click on the device in question, select Properties, and then click the Driver tab, there should be a button for update driver. Also, I would make sure that your BIOS is up to date. The latest version for your system can be found here.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

Hello, I am looking for a little bit of help. I have a Lenovo Edge 15 0319-46U laptop I recieved from my educational institution. I have had the laptop since fall of 2012. I've never had a single issue with the laptop except a month ago I noticed my wireless 1x1 b/g/n card stopped working. I'm well knoledged in computers and have already tried updating the drivers but I ran into an issue. My wireless card is no longer being shown on the Device Manager list under Network Adapters or "Unknown Devices", I only see my Wired gigabit card. I went into Bios, checked the button (did all the begginer stuff) and no dice. Wireless still does not work. I went ahead and ordered a new Intel Wireless card for said laptop and made sure the interface worked correctly, so my question is does anyone know of any fixes that could work even if the adapter is not shown on anywhere in the computer? And would anyone know if the Intel 7260-HMWNBWB Dual band card would be compatible with this machine? Thanks in advance for an answer.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 0319-46U wireless problems

Hello and welcome,

The ThinkPad BIOS has a wifi whitelist.  A card has to be a whitelisted model and have a Lenovo FRU number or the laptop will refuse to boot.  Generic cards - even with the correct model number - won't boot on an unmodified BIOS.

Page 113 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual  lists the compatible models and FRU numbers.

Hello, I've recently bought the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 (about a week old) and everything is fine, except the problem is that the wireless download speed & connection is terrible slow. I've done speedtests and resulted in a 1mbps--or barely-- download speed. I updated the drivers, the network adapter, etc. and I have successfully updated the important Windows updates. It's currently Windows 7 and the current network adapter is 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter. There is no problem with the router and no internet speed upgrade is required. I tested connections and done speedtests with other computers and devices on the same connection and their speed is significantly greater than the ThinkPad's. I assure you nothing is wrong with the router or connection area and I have some confidence that it is a hardware problem with the Wireless card. Is there any solution to this problem that does not require me to install another network adapter? I looked around and used Google and tried different methods but they don't seem to work. Thank you in advance.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E545 - Weak Wireless Connection

I set up an account just to reply to you!...and also I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545, and I want everyone to know what they're doing.  Plus, I'm having the same problem.  I just downloaded the Broadcom Wireless LAN (Driver here! Remember to choose for either Windows XP, 8, 8.1, or whatever you have!) and I've seen past comments that this has worked for them.  I'm about to go try it out, so wish me luck!  I hope you haven't returned that laptop you bought!  Lenovo is usually such a good brand, from what I hear, and I personally already enjoy the exterior, as I put structure, stability, and damage-resistant against style, which the Edge E545 seems to be more for the accident prone or careful type, but still cool!  Good luck!

Hi, I recently bought a 300Mbps Wireless N Router (TP-Link TL-WR841ND), but I only get 72 Mbps speed on my Thinkpad E430 laptop. As far as I read, the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter only supports speeds up to 150 Mbps (which would still be ok with me), but instead I get 72 Mbps. I tried to tweak the adapter and router settings, but I had no luck. Do I need to change the Wireless adapter? Is it possible to change it, or should I use an external USB Wireless adapter instead? Thank you!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E430 Wireless speed only 72Mbps

Hi Tudorc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would suggest you to check if any other similar device is able to achieve better speeds.

Log to the router's configuration utility by typing its IP address into a browser and change the encryption settings to WPA2 Encryption Only. Choose 40MHz-wide channels in the router?s configuration utility.

Since you are using a 1x1 single-stream card, so a max of 150Mbps is theoretically said to achieve. In addition, you are only on the 2.4GHz band, which is often congested, so you may see lower speeds. The disparity between theoretical and practical Wi-Fi performance comes from network protocol overhead, radio interference, physical obstructions on the line of sight between devices, and distance between devices. Under ideal conditions, actual results for a wireless adapter rated at 150Mbps is perhaps in the range of 50-80Mbps.

Hope this provided enough clarity for your query!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hi, This is my first time posting and I'm hoping someone can help me resolve a strange issue I am having with my wireless connection on my Thinkpad edge.   Basically what happends is I cannot connect to my router unless I set up a network ONLY from my computer.  It will not work if the network is configured on another laptop in the house.   This is all well and good and I am able to connect when I do this but randomly every few days OR when I reboot or boot up from sleep mode I am unable to connect to the network that I set up on my computer.  Every other device in the house is able to connect to the router network that I configured on my computer. Every time this happens I have to reset the router.  I reset back to stock router settings with the NETGEAR SSID and no security and I am unable to connect and everyone else is still able to connect.  Thus I have to set up the network exactly the way it was before so all the other devices in the house won't have to keep changing their information just to connect to the internet.   I have tried updating the adapter drivers and that did not work and sometimes randomly I am able to connect to the stock NETGEAR SSID but this seldom lasts long and I have to go and reconfigure the network again the way it was.  While I have internet and I have found a temporary fix to this problem I would love to get rid of it all together as it is a pain and it seems to be happening more f... Hi, I purchased my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 14 0578-A99 a week ago. My wireless internet works intermittently. It detects my wireless network properly, but fails to connect. Then suddenly, after a lot of refreshing/connecting/disconnecting it starts working. I have another Dell laptop on which it connects instantly (indicating that there is nothing wrong with the wireless router). Also, there is one icon for Intel WiFi, and one icon for Wireless Networks on my taskbar. I donot know if these are different, and which one should I enable. Is there any driver which I need to update, or is there anything I am not doing correctly to connect to wireless? Regards,Anish

Answer:Wireless internet working intermittently on Thinkpad Edge 14 0578-A99

You might want to check your power settings in windows 7.   Control panel, power options, under your power plan click change plan settings.  Then change advanced power settings, under wireless adapter settings,  power saving mode, make sure maximum performance is chosen for battery and plugged. Then also under control panel, device manager, network adapters, right click on your wireless adapter, properties, power management, uncheck, "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." FN-F5 should bring up a little window that will allow you to turn on or turn off wireless.   To connect to a network, i'm assuming that you are using windows to control your wireless.  click the bar one and open network and sharing center and connect from there. Another thing that you can do is run Thinkvantage system update and make sure that your drivers are up to date.  If you find more than one, download and install it one at a time and reboot.  Don't do them all at once, sometimes that doesn't work so well. Let us know if any of this works for you.

Hi,
We deployed 10 Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (M/N   MP1ZPZA) laptops for a new customer installation.
All systems are running Windows 7 64-bit Professional
The laptops are connected wireless in a Windows Server 2008R2 domain.
We have noticed some slow connectivity issues.
Multiple access points were tested but still had the same issue.
Whenever we ping a workstation the response time is over 800 milliseconds.
I updated the drivers using Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools and I didn?t get any improvement.  Because the wireless adapter is Intel, I installed the latest drivers provided by Intel but the result was the same.
I found that after running Intel WiDi application on any laptop the Ping response time for that workstation will temporarily decrease to less than 5ms (a normal timing range)
A couple of HP laptops were added to the domain for testing but did not experience the same issue with the ping response.
A case was opened with Lenovo technical support (Case#902B6YJ).
After talking with Lorenzo, Ray and Alfonso from Lenovo support the conclusion was that is an engeneering problem  and they suggested us to address the issue to this forum.
Has any else experienced this type of issue?

Solved. I use 'wired' to access a secure intranet, and 'wireless' for general internet use in the office and elsewhere. The wireless connection kept disappearing after I had used the wired connection. Here's a typical scenario: * Boot up with wireless only - no problem.* Plug in wired network cable - it takes over and wireless is turned off, at a deep level.* Unplug wired network cable - no connections! The wireless network does not resume.* Run the Windows network trouibleshooter to discover "wireless capability is turned off".* Pressing Function F9 and clicking the Master and Individual on-off buttons does not help.* Windows network trouibleshooter offers to fix it: accept the offer, and it works again. There has been a lot of discussion about wireless connections on various models of ThinkPad and numerous solutions offered and I've tried most of them. Finally I got to uninstall ThinkVantage Access Connections and now everything works as expected. In fact it is possible to have both networks active at the same time (for example in different browsers). Conclusion: Wired and wireless don't mix well in ThinkVantage Access Connections, so just uninstall it.

Hello, I just ordered an E540 and it comes with an Intel 7260-N (not AC) mPCIE and it also has an unpopulated M.2 (NGFF) slot presumably for an mSATA cache option. My question is this, can I replace the wireless card with the 802.11AC equivalent? Reading online that replacing the wireless card can cause boot error, but I'm almost certain that I've seen this card (7260-AC) available as configuration option so...? I'd also like to add an mSATA drive to store my OS on and use a 1TB HDD for media (instead of using SSD then using ODD caddy for 1TB HDD, thus losing optical drive).I know that I can add an mSATA card, but where can I buy one? NGFF is fairly new so no one is selling it, and the ones that are have low capacities for high prices. Thanks, Danz207

NGFF is fairly new so no one is selling it, and the ones that are have low capacities for high prices.Note that mSATA and NGFF (now referred to as M.2) are not the same thing.  M.2 cards have a different connector and can be wired for SATA, PCIe or both.  Your laptop has the M.2 SSD slot wired for SATA, so you'll need to look at M.2 SATA SSD's, not PCIe ones.  Whether or not your machine can boot from the M.2 SSD slot will probably be a case of trial and error given that Lenovo only recommend using the M.2 slot for caching. As for available M.2 SSD products, the appropriate one depends on the available space you have.  I couldn't see which length M.2 SSD's could be used in the hardware owners manual for the E540.  However, generally the shortest is going to be 42mm, also known as 2242.  Currently the only product in that length is the MyDigitalSSD 128GB M.2 SATA SSD.  If the slot is longer, up to 80mm, then that opens up the Crucial M500/M550 M.2 SATA (2280) SSD's as an option, which are available in 120/128/240/256/480/512GB capacities.   The Crucial M500 M.2's are available all over the place.  We are still waiting on Crucial getting the M550 M.2 into regular pro... Just purchased 44 E530 each with Intel Centrino N2230 Wireless card.  Windows 7 installed, laptops log into a Windows domain across (Aruba) wireless AP's.  Issue with speed but mainly ability to actually login via Wireless environment.  Scenario - group 30/31 students try to log in to domain using Wireless but only 6/7 will be able to connect.  Others sit at the 'Welcome' screen.  After 5/10 minutes we reboot the laptops that haven't logged in.  Of these a few may log in this time round (allbeit slowly).  Other students reboot again and gradually a few more will be able to log in.  Others will again just sit at 'welcome' screen.  On a good session all users MIGHT be able to log in but it could take over half an hour because of repeated reboots required.  The wireless driver has been updated but this made little or no difference.  I've also set a Windows Group Policy to 'wait on login' as it was thought the issue might be the Thinkpads needing to see the Wireless LAN before the user tried to log in to the Windows domain. If one of the laptops is tested with Ethernet connection then it works as expected, so it is definitely wireless related.  any advise from anyone?

Hello everyone, I'm facing a problem with the Thinkpad E130 and the integrated Sierra Wireless MC8355 Gobi 3000 broadband modem. I can't use them with my SIM cards. No connection is established. I'm sure that a modem is integrated since it was specifcally ordered with it and it shows up in the device manager. What I ruled out:- Hardware defect: There is a second Thinkpad E130 with the same setup, where it doesn't work either.- Service provider problem: Tried two SIM cards from two different service providers.- SIM card problem: SIM cards work in mobile 3G router. What I did:- Shut down the notebook- Put a sim card in the slot in the back of the laptop, behind the battery.- Reboot the notebook and start the Thinkvantage Access Connections software.- The sim card usually does get detected and a suitable profile is shown automatically.- Nonethless I created a profile myself. More exactly two profiles for the two service providers. The data for the APN, etc. is gathered either from the internet or from a second software I use.- I try to connect with the profile which is automatically shown and the self-created profiles.- It tries for several minutes but then quits with an error message: 'Unable to connect to network at this time due to out of coverage or Your SIM-card may not be activated. Please see Lenovo Mobile Broadband Actviation or contact your mobile operator. Do you want to sign up now?' - I tried to connect with a second software called MWconn, which ... Read more

Answer:Wireless 5GHZ bandwidth range support in ThinkPad Edge E520? Answer: NO

Thanks for this info.  I've been having a problem with my wireless connection that I think might be related to this -- your input would be much appreciated. Computer: Thinkpad Edge E520, i5, 500GB, 4GB RAM, Intel WiFi Link 1000 wireless card; running Windows 7 Basically, if I'm in the same room as the router, I get wireless connection, and it's fine.  If I round the corner into the hallway and beyond, I can see the network, but no connectivity.  I've done the whole "updating to most current driver" business, as well as everything that Lenovo support told me to do.  I reset my router (not that I thought that was the problem, since 2 other laptops in the apartment get a connection no problem, and I also couldn't connect to a network at a coffee shop...) then even uninstalled the ThinkVantage Access Connections just in case it and Windows were fighting over who gets to control my internet connection.  Finally, after all this, Lenovo sent me a replacement wireless card (same one) under warranty, so I replaced the card -- no dice. I finally changed my router settings to WPA2 AES, and this has improved the situation *slightly* -- I can now connect, but so extremely slowly that it's useless. Do you think that the fault lies with the card and its inability to tap the 5gHz spectrum?

I have a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge e545 with download speeds in the 0.15 mbs range. Ethernet gives it about 30 mbps. No, it is not my router--other lenovo laptop wifi connections are perfectly normal for my broadband at 25 mbps. It is windows 8.1 fully updated. I tried to find drivers and downloaded the supposedly correct wireless LAN driver, but no success. Sometimes when started plugged in to battery power or just after being plugged in to ethernet it has high wifi download speed. Also the webcam is not showing picture, which driver should I download? And I am getting an audio driver fail notice. This is a brand new laptop, and Lenovo is quickly losing a loyalty. The only way they would help me on their renowned customer service site is if I paid $99.99. Any info is appreciated.

Hi,  I am new to this community. I have been given a computer that was once used by a business who had done something funny to it. There is no recovery partition and when I put in a CD or DVD the computer doesn't recognize. I am trying to recover the computer with a wipe and reload. It was pre-installed with Windows 8 but does not appear to be anywhere in the computer as the only located Windows install that came up in command prompt was the Windows 7 Enterprise installed by the business.  I have spoken to Lenovo on the phone who said that I require Win 8 64 bit. I have that and am trying to boot from the live USB but it doesn't work. It had worked, before I had changed things in diskpart, but I only went into that because when I tried to restore to factory settings the computer came up with the error "Reset the PC as the required partition is not available" I had found a solution to this on Youtube and copied the guy but stuffed something up and now I can't get back into Command Prompt to correct the problem. I am now completely stuck in Boot Menu/Application Menu page. I cannot enter Windows start up page and I cannot boot from any live USB. I am stuck. There is also NO novo button on my keyboard.  Please help! Thank you.

Answer:Im stuck in the Boot Menu/Application Menu page when I turn on the computer. ThinkPad Edge E530.

Answer:How do I turn on the wireless on my Lenovo T400 Thinkpad?

Two things to check:
1. There is a small slide switch along one edge of your ThinkPad that turns the wireless (and Bluetooth, etc.) radios on/off. Make sure it's ON. You should see a green indicator.
2. Use the Fn-F5 key combination to bring up a software applet. Verify that "801.11 Wireless radio" is ON.

If that doesn't work then make sure you have the correct device drivers installed for wireless support. Run ThinkVantage System Update to download/install them if necessary.

I have Thinkpad Edge E431 which has two PCI Express card slot of different form factor. The first one being PCI Express Mini Card slot occupied by Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and the second slot is PCI Express M.2 Card slot for SSDs/WWAN card. I have been searching WWAN Card with PCI Express M.2 form factor but unable to find one in my locality. However, there are vendors in my locality selling WWAN card which is compatible with PCI Express Mini Card slot.My question being, is it possible to remove the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and replace it with WWAN card. I have USB wireless LAN card so I don't bother removing the internal wireless card. The laptops comes with WWAN antenna. It also has SIM Card slot underneath the battery.I have modded the BIOS so there shouldn't be any problem of laptop rejecting the card. Thanks in advance and any help would be really appriciated.  RegardsKemun

Answer:ThinkPad T400 (6475-FP1) - Can't turn off Bluetooth & Wireless problems

As far as bluetooth, Fn + F5 will let you turn off the radio. You can also go into the BIOS under security/I-O Port Access and disable it. As far as the 5100 wireless card, there is a note on the intel site that says this: "If your system had Windows 7 and Intel PROSet/Wireless Software installed prior to upgrading to Windows 8, then Intel PROSet/Wireless Software will not install the first time. You need to install Intel PROSet/Wireless Software a second time for it to install correctly." I would suggest the newest drivers from the Intel site. If you go here, they will make suggestions:http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/wireless

This has happened twice now (last night and this morning), I just purched the system a few months back.  Running XP, SP3. I don't know what triggers it, but the wireless radio just suddenly turns off. I then can't get it to repair the connection b/c the system doesn't think it has a radio! i try to turn on/off the radio with the ThinkVantage menu, but it won't give me the wireless menu (I can get to it when the radio is working). The only way I can get it to work is to reboot the system. What gives?

Answer:Wireless Radio just turns off and it the system then think there is no radio

Have you checked the settings four your wireless card . There is a setpoint that allows windows to shut off your wireless ( for power management I assume). On my machine you double click the wireless icon in the tray, click properties, under general tab, click configure next to wireless card, click power management. there should be a spot to check or uncheck allow computer to turn off wireless. Set it to be on all the time. That might help , but a lot of people are having wireless issues with this machine.Good luck

Or any other help.THANKS!

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Answer:Numeric Keypad (on Fn+alpha keys) missing on Thinkpad X1 and Thinkpad Edge

As you are experiencing Fn+ alpha numeric keys are not working, I would suggest you to please update the Power Manager software and also update the Bios of your system from the below mentioned web link.

After this, please restart the system and check if the issue resolved.

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.
