ThinkPad Edge 431 Powered USB charging at only one port when thinkpad is in hibernate

Question: ThinkPad Edge 431 Powered USB charging at only one port when thinkpad is in hibernate

I have a ThinkPad 431 with Windows 7 the BIOS turned on for always on.I switched on the USB option always on in lenovo utility. Thinkpad has 3 USB ports, two on the left and one on the right. The one on the right works when the thinkpad is in hibernation. The left ones don't. When thinkpad is on, all ports charge. Is this by design or is there a problem with my Thinkpad unit. I really realy need two ports for charging.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I should mention that I don't have any yellow USB port. Neither the left or the right ones have yellow.

I have a new Thinkpad Edge 15".  After charging the battery to 100%, I shut the system down and leave it powered off over night. In the morning the battery has lost 30% charge.  I have charged the battery to 100%, unplugged it, left it unplugged overnight, and found the battery is still at 100% in the morning. This indicates to me that the system is discharging the battery even after being shutdown.   What can I do to determine why the battery is being discharged ?

Hi there, new on the forums. I've just bought my first ThinkPad and can't tell if the charging is complete while the laptop is off. I charge the laptop mostly when it's off but the only chargin indication I can see is a constant green LED near the charging port. I would have expected it to be red during charge and turn green when charging reaches 100%. Are all E320s like this? A very annoying problem

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E320 Charging LED; how can you tell if its charging complete?

It seems that Lenovo engineers decided that Edge users don't need as many indicator lights as other models have.  In my E420 there are only 2: AC power adapter connected (green light next to power connector) and On/Off/Sleep status (red light dot in ThinkPad logo). That's it!  If you want to know the battery status you have to open Windows.

Hello, I just started using this laptop and I got a solid state drive because I wanted to have a much faster boot time and better overall performance.  When I shutdown and reboot I certainly see a big improvement relative to shutting down and rebooting my current laptop.  Unfortunately not so for hibernation.  If I hibernate the screen goes black and it seems as if the computer is off except for the flashing red dot in the bottom right hand corner that is part of the thinkpad logo is still flashing.for quite a while. When you start it from hibernation it takes 50 to 60 seconds to get to the login screen and it takes longer at points that seem more awkward relative to the last computer I had.  Usually once you see a windows screen you expect that within 10 to 15 seconds you will have a login and after logging in within 5 seconds you will see the desktop.  All of the long pauses required to start from hibernation violate these expectations so it makes it see like forever. This is far worse than my normal non SSD hard drive.  I heard it takes time for this to improve?  How much time?  When will this improve its terrible now I have just as well purchased a HDD. ~J

I have a new issue with my laptop (ThinkPad Edge 14; 0578A25) where the battery will not charge. I have not had a problem until recently, and I don't know what caused it.  The changes that have occurred since the last time I know it was charging correctly are as follows. Prior to noticing battery not chargingUpgrade all Lenovo drivers and software through "Lenovo - Update and Drivers" in the control panelNoticed the new "Battery Firmware Update" in Power Manager that wasn't in the old version.BFU Utility said it was up-to-dateAfter noticing battery wasn't chargingUninstalled Power Manager and Power Manager Driver, reset Power Schemes, and restarted computerBattery still not charging, so I downloaded the battery firmware update wrapper from the Lenovo website and ran it (said firmware was up-to-date as well)Reinstalled Power Manager and Power Manager DriverRan a Battery Gauge Reset, but it wouldn't run (battery wasn't charging to full capacity, thus my problem again) I don't know what else to try or where to go from here.  Is there anything I can try, perhaps a way to reload the firmware to try and reset it.  I don't want to have to buy a new battery when this one was working fine until I used a Lenovo Utility that obviously broke something.

I have the Thinkpad Edge E520, which I got about 4 months ago and it has been working fine until now. I am using it plugged in, but the power supply percentage seems to be slowly decreasing and never charges up. It's currently on 65% and I'm worried that if I keep using the computer it will eventually just run out and not turn on. What should I do?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 not charging

I suggest you to uninstall the Power Management from the Programs and features under Control Panel. After uninstalling the driver, please download and install the Power Management driver ad then Kindly download Power Manager and then install it in your system.
You may also need to update the BIOS of your system. Kindly download and install all the drives from the below mentioned web link according to your Operating System.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT037710

Kindly follow the same order which is mentioned above and after installing all the drivers please check the issue.

Harish

The adaptor is connected, the computer is turned on and it says: 'connected, not charging' and suddenly it just dies (when it hit 0%). However when the computer is turned off it charges without a problem. When I connect it to the adaptor and the pc is turned on it charges for 5 seconds and then it goes to 'connected, not charging'- mode. I have read through some other post suggesting to remove the battery - however the I have to remove the keyboard and other stuff as well, so I was looking for a simpler solution. Can you help me?

With this laptop, the CPU usage rises significantly whenever the battery is charging. If I'm on running on battery power or it's fully charged, I don't have this problem. The CPU stays at 2-3% while browsing the internet, for example. But browsing the internet while the battery is charging will send the CPU up to 90-100%. It's not just browsing the internet, but any task, such as running Sony Vegas, using Skype, watching a movie, etc. Again, this only happens while the battery is charging. Everything runs much, much slower. All power management settings are identical whether it be running on battery or charging with the AC adapter, so it's not that. I am also using the 65w power adapter that was supplied with the computer, and the adapter becomes very hot to the touch while charging. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Hi, nitroxreaction

Could you possibly post your machine type and model, as well as your operating system so we can get a better idea of what could be causing this issue? Also, I'd recommend making sure all the drivers and the BIOS are up to date, and those can all be found here.

Thanks in advance,

Hello! I have a ThinkPad Edge 15. It had a charging problem from the day I purchased it. The people I bought it from sent it back to IBM/Lenovo who apparently tightened the area where the charging cord goes into the PC? (I'm obviously not PC literate, sorry!) That did NOT fix the issue, so when I got my laptop back, I called LEnovo, they sent me a new battery (even though I told them the 'Power Manager' said the battery was in good condition) which did nothing. Then they sent me a new charging cord, again-nada. They sent me a box to send the laptop back to them. As I was figuring out how to put the laptop in the box, I looked over @ my PC, and lo and behold; the light that tells you if it is charging was shining! I never sent it back-that was last August. Last night. I looked @ the charging icon; '15%, not charging'! Oops! Oh dear, not again! Went to power manager, everything is just fine. Checked all of my connections, same thing. Darn it all. I have a business. which is 90% RESEARCH! MY PC DIED on me. I called Lenovo, they said-send it to us.  I still had the box from last summer, so got it out. I left the laptop plugged in-thinking something just might happen like last summer! HA! This morning as I was figuring out how to pack it, I look over @ the laptop & Guess WHAT! It was charging, the light was on! I turned it on, and got right onto this Forum to ask a few questions of you learned and wise people! First:  I did what I thought was... Read more

Answer:ThinkPad Edge Not Charging for NO APPARENT REASON

Hi eefacm,

If everytime you get ready to place the computer in the box it starts charging, it seems like it is really a physical connection issue.
It seems as if there is a loose wire, something may have slid out of place and could be pushed back.
I recommend you go ahead and send in your unit, regardless of if it starts charging before you place it in the box.
There is no sure way of telling until you send it in and let the repair depot look at it.

I've noticed I've had this problem for a while now where when I'm charging the laptop all of a sudden the CPU useage goes sky high to 80/90% when all I'm doing is using the internet or skype (especially when using skype). I take the charger out and then everything returns to normal. This only happens sometimes when charging, not the all the time which is odd.. Anyone got any ideas?

Answer:Charging 6-cell battery for first time for Thinkpad Edge

On the way to buying my Edge, I purchased a Toshiba Satellite at Best Buy.  I took it back within a few days because there was a problem with the harddrive.  Anyway, one of the Geek Squad representatives (Geek Squad handles all technical related issues for Best Buy customers) told me to charge the battery fully prior to first use, then every day for the first month--but at a minimum of two to three times--use the battery up completely and recharge to full.  This will prolong the life of your battery.  He told me people think they are doing good by leaving their laptop plugged in all the time and the opposite is true.  A battery won't hold a charge if you keep it plugged in.  I thought that was pretty interesting! I can attest to the accuracy of this gentleman's information.  I have a Vaio laptop that absolutely can't hold a charge.  It doesn't last ten minutes.  I've kept it plugged into the wall almost constantly.  I had no idea!  I almost did a forehead smack right there in the store when I realized.

I have tried a; Lenovo, Toshiba and HP port replicator on my Edge. The external video on my Viewsonic VA1932wm will blink a couple of times and then the screen on the external monitor goes to black. There is no rhyme or reason as to when it occurs but it is not long after each bootup. Everything worked fine with the Lenovo digital port replicator and a digital cable when I had XP installed. The problems started when I switched to windows 7. I have tried a VGA and digital cable. I tried the latest software from Lenovo. I have to use a VGA cable connected to my edge from the monitor to get it to work.  I have performed 2 fresh installs of windows 7 and the the same problem. I am beginning to think it is the on board video card that is causing the problem. Does anyone out there have any suggestions to what has become very frustrating.

My thinkpad battery is not charging. It says "plugged in, not charging". Lenovo solution center just says "error detected" while the power manager says "communication problem" and gives no battery details except a firmware code. I tried battery firmware update utility but it says that there is nothing to update.Battery is not getting charged and the laptop shuts down as soon as I take the AC adapter cable out. I have tried different AC adapters so that is not the problem. I had the same problem with my old Thinkpad X60t and never figured out the problem (I tried multiple batteries and chargers with that laptop). This has rendered the laptop basically useless.  Please help!

I wondering by chance if this port, or select models ports in the Edge line were powered eSATA? I know that recent Thinkpads have began to equip them with the powered eSATA ports, but also some combo ports are allegedly supplying power too. This is of a concern because I'd like to plug in internal laptop HDD via this with just the SATA cable to them, but now that I have the cable it doesn't seem to work.  I am suspecting the answer to my question is no, but because this laptop has been acting buggy and the cable is from china, theres reason to suspect it might be one of those two as the fault and simply not the lenovo being without powered eSATA. I have the Edge 14, Type 0578 - U26

Hi, I have got a Thinkpad S440 recently. Before this, I have a U460 which come with a power management tool with option for keeping the battery level < 80% for longer lifespan (I guess everybody know this).  I want to install this in my S440 too, but I cant find this tool in the thinkpad s440, instead there is a power management driver, which after I install nothing different happen? I tried around with the Lenovo Energy Management but nothing really change, my laptop still charge up to 100% (which is 44Wh over the original 45Wh) From checking the forum, I think that a power management tool for s440 certainly exist, but i cant seem to find it. Maybe there is just none for WIndows 8.1 ? Thanks for any helps !

Hello forum, as the title says, I plan to buy an USB Port Replicator (model 45K1611) for my Thinkpad Edge 13". Since I am using Linux as OS, I am wondering if it will work? Is there a driver for it or will it probably work out-of-the-box? On the support page I did not find a driver... Also I never heard of anybody using this replicator with a Linux system. For this reason I thought I'd ask you guys over here before I'll buy it.  Best regards,Snappsen

I am using the lenovo USB port replicator with a Thinkpad Edge 15 notebook.  The Thinkpad is running Windows 7 64-bit edition.  I am getting problems where it seem like the port replicator software only initialize after logon.  The problem is that AD scripts doesnt run as the network only starts up after logon.  The notebook also shows as being offline when it is connected to the LAN.  Another problem is that the setting to duplicate displays does not work when logging on, you have to go into display settings and make the change to display on both the notebook lcd and external monitor manually after every reboot.  All these problems stops if the Notebook is directly connected with LAN cable and external monitor.

Hello pth1,

The E530 you have listed has a SATA 2.0 port.
http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/edgebook.pdf
You can go to this link and find your model on the left side bar.  It will be closer to the bottom.  Next to where it says SATA disk, it will say this:
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,

I hope this helps,

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.

I even uninstalled the driver for the Port Replicator and still could not drive an external monitor. Hi
Welcome to the forums.

I do not have that kind of pen, but I think is the one that has some "bronce contacts" at the top of the pen. I had read some other post about it, just in case check that "contacts" to make sure they are touching with the charger when you put the pen into it's holder. Sometimes the contacts may move.

I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen3) Model 20BS touchscreen  running Windows 7 64 bit. The battery is not charging -- it's in a perpetual state of "plugged in not charging"  and even when plugged in, it?s losing appr 1 percent per day (down to 31%). This has happened a few times over the past 3-4 months since I got the machine, but I've managed to find things that "fixed" it (at least temporarily): - Resetting the power gauge worked once - Changing the custom battery charge threshold worked a few times - Plugging in the power cord at different stages of reboot seemed to fix it once (although not sure why / how) Based on previous thread posts, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Power Manager and then tried to run Battery Gauge Reset, but to no avail. And the reset only appears to run for about 30 sec before the system tray icon switches back to normal. Thanks in advance. Karl

Double-click the green "Power Manager" battery icon near the Windows' system clock, usually at the lower-right corner of the screen. If you cannot find this icon, click "Start," "All Programs," "Access IBM" and "Power Manager."Click the "Battery Information" tab.Click "Battery Maintenance."Click "Perform Reset," and then click "Continue" on the confirmation dialog box. This procedure will take at least five to six hours to complete, and you should not use your ThinkPad during that time. You will be prompted when the battery reset is complete.
Note: make sure AC adapter plug in when perfoming gauge reset.

Regards,
Sameer

I ve bought thinkpade edge 13 (0221RY6) and formated my hdd (was trying to install win XP). But now i am ready to switch on Windows seven and i am very sorry that i ve formated my HDD with pre installed windows 7.Somebody who has same machine PLS Can u give me your copy of recovery usb or link on it! Or any other help.THANKS!

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hi I'm new here and not entirely sure where to post my question. I am in the market for a Lenovo laptop. Specific needs - I'm a PhD student in genomics/bioinformatics. My current laptop is a HP DV6 i7 6GB RAM and giving up on life after three years. I made use of the i7 for extensive data analysis but because of the overheating problems (PET HATE). At this point in time I will be using a top end Linux server for more progressive analyses and have an OK desktop at work to go with the server. Although the hard-core pc needs are met, this geek cannot live with a proper pc. The only problem is the budget of R8000 which is about $780. I want something portable, no bigger than 14inch screen, light weight (2kg max in my budget), something that will last past 3 years and is VERY rugged (thrown in backpack and rough handled with the possibility of being dropped by accident without breaking), something I can upgrade if needed ie. accessibility to hardware, something than can handle 10+ open browser sessions, 10+ open pdf files, 3+ open word documents, good data transfer rate. All in all it's going to be a personal laptop with multitasking and ssh to server, I want to work comfortably ie. no overheating and enough USD ports and connectivity options to meet my needs. I don't particularly like screens with lots of glare and consider a comfortable keyboard a must. I like the idea of buying something with a rugged body that I can upgrade as time passes. Answer:Thinkpad E540 BSOD when lock screen or screensaver are on, AC powered

Hi Giovanni,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I think this is because of graphic driver or with power manager, can you provide the current graphic driver version installed in your system, to verify if the installed driver is from Lenovo?

You can check it from ?device manager? to proceed with this go to start and type ?device manager?. Expand Display adapter and right click on Intel adapter go to properties & click on drivers tab.

Hope to hear back soon!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Dear All,   My Lenovo E430 notebook's battery automatically drained to 96%(even if Battery was fully charged to 100%) and then power on with  AC after 4 hours . After one day later, the battery dropped to 94%. So I sent it  to Lenovo service center, and the battery was replaced by new one.  But it seemed that battery drain symphom was not to fix, the new battery also drained again after 7 days( the case was same as the original one). I don't know why, does the battery of E430 model have the battery problem ?   Who can help me, PLEASE ? VERY TROUBLE !

Answer:E430 Thinkpad - Battery drain automatically even if unit is powered off.

Hi, Sunnyleung

Lenovo power manager gives users the power to change their battery threshold settings. The battery threshold determines at what percentage of battery life the battery will stop and resume charging. For example, a user wants to have their battery charge only when life is 50% or below. If the user plugs in their computer and the battery life is greater than 50%, then the battery will not charge. This may be your issue, and I firstly recommend making sure the settings in power manager are correct. Here are the steps to do that:

Start Power Manager by double-clicking the fuel gauge displayed in the lower right portion of the screen.
Select Advanced in Switch to: view.
Click the Battery tab.
Click Battery maintenance.
Click Perform Reset.
Follow the instructions on the screen.

After the reset is complete, the battery gauge will be calibrated. If Power Manager is not installed or no Battery Maintenance button is available in Power Manager, the battery gauge can be reset by the following instructions.

Charge the battery to 100%.
Disconnect the AC adapter from the computer.
Discharge the battery until 5% or less of the battery charge is remaining. It is okay to let the critical battery action hibernate or shutdown the system.
Connect the AC adapter. The full charge capacity value will update when the AC adapter is connected.

Try these steps and see if that helps your issue, a... Read more

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi, I have my thinkpad yoga since few weeks and I noticed that quite often, it can go to sleep mode, but not to hibernate mode. Sometimes, the problem is so serious that I cannot even shut down the computer without pushing the power button a few seconds. What happens is that the screen becomes black, as usual, but after few seconds, it comes back to the welcome screen alone. I tried to shut down every programs, and make sure it isn't installing any software, or update, but even then, it doesn't want to hibernate. Even when it's in sleep mode, it should go to hibernate automatically after 20 min, but it just wakes up and stay on instead, which is annoying. What is annoying also is that the computer doesn't tell me any error message, so I have no idea about what is the problem. Do you have an idea of what could cause this trouble and how to solve it ? Thanks in advance for your help.  Flo P.S.: Wouldn't it be better to create a forum board for Thinkpad Yoga type, or at least writing it in the name of the "edge and S series" ? Because it makes it difficult to find, and gives the impression that we squatt this board.

Hi, I bought a Thinkpad Edge S430 with regular HDD + 16 GB mSata SSD for "Express Cache". Now, when I open diskmgmt.msc, I see that this SSD drive is divided in 2 partitions :one of 6,91 GB "Primary partition"the other of 8GB  named "Hibernation partition". Why is it so ? (I've got 8GB of RAM, maybe that's the cause for the hib. part. being 8GB)As I do not use Hibernation, is it possible to free that partition, in order to have a bigger ExpressCache ? Thanks...Erwan.

Answer:Thinkpad S430 : why is 50% of my msata SSD used by "hibernate" ?

Hello, please read the following thread below.  The idea is it can store the entire memory on the SSD for a fast resume, and this explains the different types with Intel's Quick Start.  One thing to note, if you only have 4GB of RAM (which I know you have 8, but for us Twist users with 4), Lenovo's preloaded image is wasting 4GB of your SSD... which is kind of annoying (unless you upgrade which us Twist users can't do).  As for removing it I'm interested in what you'd lose.  If it's only resume capabilities I'd gladly remove that partition (as long as it still booted up fast from a cold start).  Perhaps 'someotherguy' will help. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/Sleep-vs-Hibernate-with-the-Twist-and-SSD-Cache/m...

Is this normal ? (i don't think so but I ask to be sure)Another thing, the power button doesn't seem to work. I can press on the power button as long as i want, nothing happen (no suspend or 'forced' shutdown) Does anyone have an idea what I can do ?I think the machine has a hardware problem as the two others are OK. Thanks in advance for your help. Marc.

Answer:ThinkPad X230 cannot shudown, suspend or hibernate

Hi, MarcVDH

Due to all the testing you have tried thus far, I am inclined to agree with you about the issue being hardware-related. A clean install of Windows 7 should've fixed all software issues the machine may have been having. As such, I would recommend giving support a call at (0)2 339 3611 and telling them of your issue.

Also, as for the machine turning on when the AC adapter is attached, this is a BIOS setting in certain ThinkPads. I'm not sure if it is in the X230, but I know that it is available in the X220t. If you'd like to check, it can be found under Config ? Power in the BIOS.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Dear All, My ThinkPad T42 (running on Windows XP) cannot be turn-on after being put into hibernate mode for around 24 hours. I have tried to release the battery and put it again, but with no success. Could anyone here give me a suggestion on how to solve this problem. Thank you very much for any advise on this matter. Best regards, Thomas

Answer:ThinkPad T42 cannot be turn-on after being put into hibernate mode for around 24 hours

Remove the battery. With only the ac cord plugged in, boot the machine. When it goes to hibernation mode, press the power button ten times in a row. On the tenth time, hold the button for 30 seconds. It will force a shut-down. Try to restart the machine. It should start.

I have a Thinkpad T60 Type 2007. Up until about a month ago my laptop had no problem entering stand by or hibernate. Suddenly it now refuses to do so (I cannot remember doing anything such as installing new software that may have triggered this). When I tell it to enter stand by (either by using the keyboard shortcut key, closing the lid or through Windows Shut down) the Windows message "Preparing to stand by" appears. The screen then goes black. I know, however, that the computer has not entered stand by because I can still hear the hard drive turning (which used to stop when stand by worked previously) and because the ThinkLight can be switched on/off. I have tried pushing all of the buttons that I can; the only thing that works is holding the on/off button to force shut down the computer and then reload it. Interestingly if I put CAPS lock on when in this pseudo-stand by mode with the black screen, it is still on when I reload my computer. Does anyone have any idea of what the problem is? Will a BIOS update help? Your help will be greatly appreciated. APL

Answer:Thinkpad T60 refuses to enter stand by or hibernate

I am having similar problem to APL. When I close the lid, it should enter stand by. However, when I open it and the screen lights, there is a message that says "Preparing to Stand By". At this point the system is frozen and now other function works, including ctrl-alt-del. Alternatively, if I select stand by from the start menu, the same "Preparing to Stand By" message appears with the same frozen result. I have run latest AVG virus and malware software (nothing detected) and HijackThis (no issues detected). Also ran Windows and Lenovo updates recently. One was a BIOS update to latest 79ETE3WW (2.23) 9/12/08. Other recent changes included Power Manager update. Or is it a possible Windows SP issue?  Any other suggestions? Sysinfo:ThinkPad T60Model 2623-D9UType B6377Memory: 1GOS: XP SP3

Hi thptquochoc, Does it happen only when the computer is idle? You have some settings in power manager where you can specify that the computer should hibernate when idle for a certain period of time. If set too low it might hibernate pretty fast when you leave the computer idle. If not using power manager there is a similar settings in Windows under power options. You have the options to specify that the computer should hibernate when running on battery, power adapter or you can disable this setting as well to prevent hibernate. If you let me know the version of Windows you use i can be more specific where to find those settings if that might be the problem. -gan

Hi people! so I bought my new ThinkPad E 450 some days ago. Then I noticed the laptotp will just not go into hibernate mode anymore. I close the lid, press the power button (both configured to send the computer into hibernation) or just select "hibernate" from Windows and the computer turns the screen off but keeps working. By rebooting the computer, it works fine again for maybe an hour or so, but thereafter problem will appear again. Interesting is also, when the problem appears, the fingerprint device does not recognize any fingerprint either. Do you have any idea how to solve this problem? Hello everyone,At this time I've been having a problem with my Lenovo Thinkpad W540 that I got less then a year ago and I'm hoping someone can help. At this time my W540 runs Windows 7 professional and has 7.63 GB of an 8 GB RAM free. My problem is that anytime I have it restart, it goes no farther then wiping all the icons and toolbars from veiw. This leaves me staring at the blue default background until it simply falls into hibernation. Once it starts to hibernate I can't get the screen to even show up as anything but a black screen. The only way I can get it to start working again is by holding down the power button till it shutsdown. Once I do this though, I start running into problems with it starting back up. This has prevented me from doing proper updates as I need to restart for the program changes to take hold. I've had this brought up and techs tried to fix it remotely but it still hasn't been fixed. If any of you know what I can do to get my labtop working properly I'd appreciate it.

Hi, We're having a problem across 4 Lenovo X240 laptops we're using (3 X 20AL-008EUK's and 1 X 20AL-0081UK) that have been bought at different times (1 in January and 3 in February)  All are having issues with sleep mode and hibernation. From various tests it seems that all were able to enter and exit sleep mode without issue once, with the red light on the lid pulsing to indicate it was in sleep mode, however when trying for a second time without a reboot the unit would appear to enter sleep mode however the red light on the lid would remain constantly on and opening the lid would just result in a plain black screen with no cursor or image whatsoever. On a couple of units I noticed that pressing on any keys on the keyboard would emit the windows error sound, and using ctrl alt del and entering the users password would seem to login suggesting that the graphics driver had failed. I've tried updating the drivers for the graphics adaptors and the BIOS to the latest available from the Lenovo support website as of today (27/02/14) however if anything this has made the issue worse with Windows crashing from a clean boot to a plain black screen with a mouse cursor (unable to invoke the ctrl alt del menu etc.) 3 out of 10 times across all units Is this an known issue and are there any work arounds available? Obviously besides just not using sleep mode as we've currently rolled the solid state models out to some of management and the HDD one to a road ba... Read more

You didn't say how old that laptop is and if it has the original battery and charger.

Hi, I don't have the touchpad issues which are mentioned in this thread. My touchpad is working fine except it goes into hibernate. So if I wake up my device and the system wants me to log in into Win 10 the touchpad still needs some time until it reacts. It feels like it is deactivated for some time. After about 5-7 seconds it is working fine. Are there any suggestions to solve that problem? I have the new Bios 1.20 installed and I am also using the current Synaptics Driver 19.3.4.86. Thanks

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 with Windows Vista (sevice pack 2) and my computer has a number of booting problems. When I shut down the computer either manually with the button or with the shut down option in the start menu, the computer boots down, stays off for 5 seconds then retsarts itself. I have not been able to boot down for months. In addition, I've had tons of problems with sleep and hibernate mode - the computer restarts itself or won't go into the modes.

I've played with the power settings many times and looked up many forums advice for these settings. I also have a clean bill of health regarding viruses/spyware for the bleepingcomputer forum for sypware as of this week. Any help would be apperciated.
thanks!

I work for a local PC repair business and had a customer bring in a Lenovo Edge 15 Laptop.  I know it's out of warranty by a couple months.  It had stopped charging.  The charging port is damaged. The wife made a comment that fire/sparks had shot out from it.  Which may explain the damage to the port.  We disassembled it and saw there was a blown chip on the motherboard.  So I'm trying to find what the system specs are to determine the cost effectiveness of repair vs. replace.  Looking up the serial number give little info and I've talked to Premium Support chat and was directed to a phone number.  Do any Lenovo support techs check in on the forums?

It is either pushed too far into the computer, or there is a problem with it internally. what can I try to do? all suggestions appreciated

You can try opening it up according to the SL410 Hardware Maintenance Manual and have a look.

Hello, I am going to be using this laptop for Senior School, already 1 term in and am hating the laptop we recieved 2 years ago. I would prefer if a Lenovo Staff or Moderator can confirm if this is possible to buy as it's not on the Customize page. With the 14" model, I can get the 9 cell battery option but no choice of the Intel Centrino Advanced 6200N wireless card, and with the 15" model I can't get either. I know it's possible to use that card with the edge, but why isn't it avaialable to choose? The same with the 15" with a 9 cell battery option? Cheers, Matt. [This is from the Australian Store]

Question: Thinkpad Edge 14

I've recently received my Edge 14 and upon unboxing, I noticed the top of the laptop (the back of the screen) is curved.  I've seen countless videos and customer photos of their Edge and have not seen this on their's.  The curved screen is very noticeably.  You can also see that the speakers are curved as well due to it.  Does anyone know if its suppose to be like this?  If not then do you think I can get a full refund and none of that 15% restocking free junk?  Besides, I don't think I'm at fault here but rather who ever built the thing.  I am fairly disappointed to see this because I hear Thinkpads are quality built.  This is my first Thinkpad and my first impression was it is just another cheaply made laptop.  I've also bought the sleeve for this and that doesn't even fit properly.  Theres a huge gap when you place the laptop in.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14

Hello mate, Can you take a photo of your laptop ?And for the sleeve, it's because you've got the room for the AC adapter.

Question: Thinkpad Edge 15

Hi,I am planning to buy a Thinkpad Edge 15 with Core i5. Can someone suggest me whether this model is good? Purpose is to do some office work, internet and mostly watching movies. ThanksJR

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15

Can't comment myself on the Edge 15, however, based on my recommendation from experiences of ThinkPads past (600 and X21) and present (X100e), my girlfriend is about to order the top-spec Edge 15 from Lenovo, you could also check out reviews such as: http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/reviews/index.cfm?reviewId=3226563

Recently, my HDD has begun to grind to a halt on my Thinkpad Edge e420. I decided to replace the HDD to an SSD, and after many, many unsuccessful attempts to reinstall the OS via Rescue and Recovery, cloning the drive etc, I decided to install the OS onto the new SSD using a windows disk. While this seems to have worked, I now no longer have any of the preinstalled Lenovo software. This is disappointing, but also seems to have reduced the functionality of the laptop (eg the networking device is no longer recognised).Could anyone please recommend a method of reinstalling the Lenovo software onto this new SSD.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 420 HDD to SSD

Windows 7 right? Download ThinkVantage System Update, it should download most of the drivers and applicable softwares for your E420.

I currently own a Lenovo Thinkpad r61i with a 15 inch screen 1gig of ram, 6.5 lb. and windows vista! I am wanting to buy a new laptop. I am a student and I have my laptop everywhere I go and I need something light, pretty fast, and gets good battery life. I think I want to buy the thinkpad edge, but I have a few questions for people who have already bought it.  How have you handled there being no CD drive. I was thinking that I wouldn't have a problem because I mainly download software but I want to know how others handled it. I think I would image a cd on another computer and mount it with WinMountIs the 1.3ghz CULV processor good for this computer. I really don't want it to hang as that is my current problem or with the high ram is it fineHow is the new keyboard layout. I am constantly typing on my current thinkpad and I want to make sure that it is a good layout as I am constantly taking notes and writing essays    Please answer,Jeremy

Answer:Should I Buy the ThinkPad Edge

Hi Jeremy. I just got my Edge about a week ago.  I am also a college student.  I haven't had any problems getting around the CD drive.  My husband loaded Windows 7 Ultimate to a flash drive, then loaded it onto my computer.  I like not having it.  I was constantly bumping into the open button on my Vaio.  Very irritating when you are taking a timed exam online!  The Edge isn't as light as a netbook but it is pretty light.  I had a hard time deciding on the S10-3t or the Edge (as is evidenced by my posts on these boards--very embarrassing!!).  I am very glad I changed my mind and ordered this one.  I have the AMD Neo X2 L325 (1.5mhz) so I can't help with your question about the 1.3.  What I can tell you is that I haven't had a single issue with hanging.  This machine is very responsive.  I have a Thinkpad z60m.  The keyboard layout seems very similar to me.  I haven't had any trouble acclimating.  AND I LOVE this keyboard.  It has a better feel than the z60m, and that's saying something!  Prior to using this Edge, the Z60m was my favorite keyboard hands down.  I write quite bit (English/Communications major) and this keyboard is very comfortable. Battery power is pretty good.  I'm sure you'd get a lot more out of a netbook. I hope that helps a little. Karen

just recently bought my first laptop and got good recommendations on lenovo...however i have found everything else to be fairly frustrating. There are no instructions regarding inital battery setup to ensure lengevity in the box. i called customer service. i looked online. they directed me to go back online and read a manual which still did not have the proper information and was organized extremely poorly. basically im just venting a little about my lack of satisfaction and wondering how to get the most out of battery/. I have looked everywhere.

Answer:New Thinkpad edge 14

New owner here also. There was limited documentation in the box, and on the last pages of something that looked like generic policy / license info, I found a few basic instructions. Of note, the battery may not have full capacity until it has been fully charged and discharged for several cycles. Agreed documentation is not the best, but everything is pretty straightforward, except detailed configurations, which is always trial and error. So far, I really like the notebook.

Question: Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi,i had a problem with the monitor backlight on my E525. It went totally gone and i needed a flashlight to see anything. I deinstalled the graphics drivers and it was fine again. I just see everything in 1024*786 and it says "standard vga graphics card" because i have no driver. Now i want to reinstall the Lenovo drivers, but on the homepage i dont find the graphic drivers for E525.Can anyone help? Thanks alot!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi, startrip

I think I found what you're looking for. This is the driver for the AMD graphics that your computer uses. To find drivers on Lenovo's site easily, go to support.lenovo.com, click on Driver Matrix, select the line of computer you have (ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, etc.) and then select your system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi,     I have recently bought a Thinkpad Edge (AMD / L625) to replace my dependable but very aged Dell Precision M50. The Think Pad Edge I think is a great machine and does everything that I want it to do. One minor niggle and I think it only bugs me because of my engineering background is the systems specs. The Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1325 which is powered by the same processor and chipset can support 8GB of RAM, whereas the Edge can only support 4GB. Given that the memory controller is integrated into the Turion CPU and it is unlikely that Lenovo had AMD fab a custom CPU, shouldn't the edge also support 8GB of RAM. Has anyone tested an 8GB of RAM on an edge?If so does it work?Have Lenovo limited the Edge's RAM capacity through its hardware or software implementation? One final question if the system does support 8GB of RAM does the RADION 3200 IGP then take control of 512MB of system ram, rather than the 256MB when using 4GB of RAM. I was only thinking about this upgrade as a midlife refresh to give the system a little bit more horsepower. Kingston, Crucial and Corsair, to name just a few all make compatible 4GB memory modules, or atleast they conform to the specs of the current 2GB modules. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

Answer:Thinkpad EDGE - AMD - 8GB RAM ?

welcome to the forum!

since the edge likely wasn't tested with 6GB or 8GB, the specs didn't reflect the system's full capability.   the same thing happened with the X61 and T61 systems.   they were rated at 4GB maximum but many users (myself included) are successfully running 8GB.

i'm not personally aware of any limitations in memory.   8GB and even 16GB (if 8GB DDR3 modules are ever released to the public) should be possible.

with that said, i cannot say definitively whether 8GB is supported but i'd be very, very surprised if it weren't.   i have an edge sitting on my desk with 2 x 2GB installed but unfortunately don't have any 4GB DDR3 modules to test.   if i get my hands on a 4GB module or two before this system leaves my office then i'll let you know the results.

enjoy your new system!
