ThinkPad Edge E431 fan problems?

Question: ThinkPad Edge E431 fan problems?

I'm looking at the new Thinkpad Edge 431 and have been hearing about the fan problems in the E430/530 series. Does anyone around here happen to have one of the new ones or can anyone find a review of the E431? Is the fan problem solved or is it still around? If it was, it would be quite the dealbreaker.

Preferred Solution: ThinkPad Edge E431 fan problems?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all!  I just got my new Thinkpad e431 and I?m really excited about it because it is ?replacing? my beloved T41. However, I noticed that the e431 is WARMER than my 10 year old T41, and that is after only having it on for 15 minutes. (Using MS Word, and a couple internet sites). It?s not necessarily, burning HOT, just consistently warm (in the area under the touchpad). I?ve read conflicting reviews on the warmth and I was wondering what others? experiences are. Do I have a dud that I need to get replaced, or is it really supposed to be warm? (It?s also interesting because the ?cheaper? G500, 15.6? that I had briefly was really cool, as in barely noticed any heat on my lap at all, even during installation). Yes, the fan is running. And, yes, I will always write with my laptop on my lap. I work all day at a desk and can?t go home and sit at a desk and write too? This laptop is already heavy, so I dread having to put something underneath it?

Been navigating a few different forums quite a bit for this one.We downgraded this Lenovo E431 to windows 7 to fit our corporate environment. There is no disable option in the BIOS.The windows 7 drivers do not add the UltraNAV tab. Always fails on the 3rd portion as the 2 green check marks pass on the first 2 components and fail on the 3rd.  Ran under both the user and admin accounts. No other missing drivers. The device manager does not show any touchpad drivers aside from a "universal" mouse driver which can not be uninstalled.Registry mod will not change this. Aside from pulling the ribbon cable out I am sort of at a loss.  First time ever being stumped by a touchpad.....Last time ever buying an E431 for our environment, we've had 3 of these so far and nothing but issues. Sticking with other Lenovo models. Any ideas?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E431 - how to disable the touchpad?

I realize this is an old question, but my reply may help some with the same new question.  There's a quick answer for those who know what they are doing and a longer answer for those who don't. On my Lenovo Edge 2-1580 I couldn't turn off the detestable touch pad.  Here's the part you know:Because this is a Synaptics touchpad, the option to disable it if an external mouse is connected, simply isn't there.   You also might know that if you go into regedit and look for  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change the value to 33 it should work ... but doesn't. What I found is if you go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change THAT value to 33, reboot your computer, it does indeed work!  Pull the receiver from the USB port and the touchpad starts working again! For those not familiar with regedit, your best option is to find someone who is and have them do it because editing the registry is not something you want to be doing if you don't know what you're doing. To give you an idea of how dangerous it is, read this article on what the registry is and how your computer can stop working if you mess it up, http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/what-everybody-should-know-about-windows-registry.htm Now that I've scared the newbies and made them understand how critical it is, it isn't difficult to do this little fix if you can follow instructions.  So here are the step by step instructions for you.&nbs... Hi guys,I have a laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 model running on Window 10 Pro OS. It is a Core i3-3110M CPU @2.40GHz 8GB RAM 64-bit OS. My issue is :WLAN / WiFi keeps going ON and OFF every now and then. The WiFi once connected keeps connecting and disconnecting every minute and it sometimes take forever to reconnect back. I will need to right-click on the WiFi Symbol at the bottom right and click on 'Troubleshoot problems' to recover from this issue. Once recovered, it disconnects again. Some Observations :The issue could be because of the conflict between the Bluetooth drivers and the WiFi drivers. If Bluetooth is disabled then the WiFi works correctly. There will be no problems regarding the WiFi getting disconnected. These are the following details of the hardwares and their respective driver versions. Network : Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless -N 2230Driver Version : 15.18.0.1Driver Date : 30-04-2015  Bluetooth : Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)Driver Version : 18.1.1525.1445Driver Date : 18-06-2015 I have no idea why these two are causing this issue, but I really need to fix this. And it has been atleast a year since I bought this laptop and it has been showing this problem since 4 - 5 months back. Please let me know if there is a work around for this. If not atleast I hope the above information might help fixing the issue. If there is any additional information that is needed from me, please leave a m... Read more

I am trying to create recovery discs for my ThinkPad Edge E431. I double click the Q Drive, which is labeled "Lenovo_Recovery."  I follow the prompts, and request to create a disk of Boot Meida and Disck Media.  I then receive an error message stating: Unable to find files for recovery media.  Then I am informed the process has been canceled.  I receive similar error messages when going to the Control Panel and click "Lenovo - Factory Recovery Discs." From reading other forum posts, some have noted that there are problems with the mappings of drives.  My Q Drive partition states it has 2.08 of 14.6 GBs free, so I am more confident there are recover files in there.  For example, I can find the recovery.ini file.  This file however references to an S drive, which I am not sure I have.  install=recimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.wim 1 S:\installsplit=recimagex.exe /apply /verify Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup.swm 1 S:\ /ref Q:\factoryrecovery\Sdrivebackup*.swm During the above described Recovery Process - my computer also prompts me asking if I want to open files from the S Drive. I have tried to download and install Lenovo Recovery and Rescue 4.52, but during the install process it states I have insufficeint memory for the install, which is puzzling since I have 169 GBs of free space on my C drive. Any advice of how to create recovery discs would be appreciated - whether they use th... I would like to add a mini ssd to my E431 laptop. But I can't figure out if I need to get an M2 NGFF drive, or an msata drive. The e431 has, to my understanding, 2 potential places this could go: The WLAN port, which I understand to be a half height mini pcie port. Its the one located under the main panel, next to the hard drive and motherboard battery. The other port, the one that get's its own panel, is either:Possibly an m2 port, according to this documentation: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD027118 Or possibly a "full height" msata port, according to this post: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/problen-with-msata-in-lenovo-thinkpad/td-p/121103... The doc just says M2, it does not specify which size, style of M2, of which I have found at least 4.According to this page, http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/m.2-ngff-ssd-compatibility-list.html, the e431 should be using a "2242" 42mm m2, except that model has 2 notches in it ( http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/mydigitalssd-128gb-super-cache-2-sc2-42mm-sata-iii-6g-m.2-ngff-ssd-... ), whereas the port on my e431 only has 1 notch. This one looks like it has the correct number of notches( http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-NGFF-PCIe-Gen2-128GB/dp/B00IT8VTN2/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1394262443&... ), except that it is considerbly longer (either 80mm or 120mm, unsure) It looks like it could maybe fit 80mm tucked in next to the li-on battery? So ... My plan was to remove the wwan card, replace it with an ssd, and then get a new wlan half height pcie card to put in the wlan slot. Any help / clarification would be greatly appreciated! For what its worth, by visual inspection it really does look like an msata port to me. The E431 definitely has an M.2 SSD slot, not mSATA.  On top of that it's wired for SATA rather than PCIe, so the Samsung XP941 you linked to isn't an option.   (Currently some models of the Sony Vaio Pro 13 is the only laptop I'm aware of that will take... I'm having trouble with my Thinkpad's integrated camera. Its not working, so I tried to reinstall the driver, and received a message that there wasn't a device for the driver. I know I HAVE a camera, but the OS doesn't seem to see it or know it exists. I'm running Windows 7 Professional (64-bit). Any suggestions?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E431 integrated camera not recognized

Hi Maxdaddio,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that webcam of your Lenovo ThinkPad E431 is not working.

Go to Control panel-> device manager -> Imaging devices and check if there is any driver with a yellow mark. Check in BIOS if integrated camera is enabled there.
Press FN+F6 to open the Communications settings window and press Show my video image button to enable the camera.
Go into Lenovo Settings App on Metro view, and select camera.
There will be the options of Private and Normal.
Select Normal.
Also, in Settings > Permissions, make sure that Skype and other similar apps have permission to access the Webcam or Microphone.

Go to testmycam and check if camera works there. This will help you to isolate if the issue is just with Skype or in general with the webcam.

Hope it helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar.

I have Thinkpad Edge E431 which has two PCI Express card slot of different form factor. The first one being PCI Express Mini Card slot occupied by Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and the second slot is PCI Express M.2 Card slot for SSDs/WWAN card. I have been searching WWAN Card with PCI Express M.2 form factor but unable to find one in my locality. However, there are vendors in my locality selling WWAN card which is compatible with PCI Express Mini Card slot.My question being, is it possible to remove the Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and replace it with WWAN card. I have USB wireless LAN card so I don't bother removing the internal wireless card. The laptops comes with WWAN antenna. It also has SIM Card slot underneath the battery.I have modded the BIOS so there shouldn't be any problem of laptop rejecting the card. Thanks in advance and any help would be really appriciated.  RegardsKemun

Hi, I had already decided to purchase the new Edge E531 (i5, Full HD, GT 740M), however before completing my order yesterday I have received an unconfirmed information that these new ThinkPad Edges are being outfitted with a new GK208 version of the GT 740M. Some of you might think: "Wow, new version, it must surely be better, right?" Wrong. Let me explain: At this very moment there are 2 version of the GT 740M I am aware of: 1) The older GK107: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2310/geforce-gt-740m.html128bit Bus (28.8 GB/s bandwidth)810 MHz CoreTMUs: 32ROPs: 16PCI-e 3.0 16x 2) The newer GK208: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpudb/2299/geforce-gt-740m.html64bit Bus (14.4 GB/s bandwidth)980 MHz CoreTMUs: 16ROPs: 8PCI-e 3.0 8x As you can see, most of the features of the card are halved. To achieve a somewhat similar performance to the "old" 740M nVidia had to pump the core clock up by massive 170 MHz, but according to tests the new version is still 10-15% slower than the old one even though its core is clocked way higher. Now, I know that 95% of customers don't care about stuff like this, they see a GT 740M and think: "Hot digitty, this thing must be fast."  And even if you were to explain them the difference they probably wouldn't mind the performance gap between the two versions. But to the 5% who care, could anyone from Lenovo please confirm/disprove the presence of the newer-yet-slower GK208, 64bit in the Edge Ex31 series? Also I'd like t... Read more

I've been using this laptop for about a year now and it had its fair share of crashes and lag but this new crash is by far the worst of them all. Basically what happens is my laptop is running normally and suddenly all of my apps close and my OS disappears. I cannot access my taskbar and the windows button does not work. The only thing that lets me get to my browser is through the links in the League of Legends client. Games that are currently running do not seem to be closed when everything else disappears. The only way I know to get my laptop working again is to ctrl+alt+delete and log off, then log back on.
Is there a solution for this? Or will I just have to buy a new laptop?
I'm using this laptop for school and if I have to buy a new laptop, a suggestion for a cheap laptop would be appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo Edge e431 Windows OS randomly closing

I would say that you have a problem with your software rather than your hardware. Certainly a year old laptop should still have plenty of life left in it.
You should have a facility on your machine to reset it back to when you first bought it - read you documentation and look for either reinstalling your operating system or resetting to factory setting.
If you don't have your documentation, download it here:

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad E431 Camera Not Working

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that webcam of your Lenovo ThinkPad E431 is not working properly.

Best regards,
Mithun.

I recently updated my thinkpad e431 ultranav driver to 18.0.7.34. It has totally borked my touchpad. I currently run windows 8.1 with all latest updates and other drivers installed. This update causes the scrolling to be jittery and has rendered it almost useless. I have reinstalled the driver too, but still the problem persists.  I also noticed that this update introduced new features making the touchpad emulate a touchscreen while totally breaking it's functionality. It has inroduced elastic scrolling and an on-screen keyboard pops up too .Please help

Hi guys,I'd be very grateful if you could help with the following Thinkpad Edge 13 issues:1. Heating. The fan is blowing hot air from the vent on the left. The bottom left of the keyboard also gets very, very hot. How can I cool it down?2. WiFi. The WiFi adapter turns off after the laptop goes to sleep. I think have to run the troubleshoot to restore it again. Very annoying problem - any ideas on a fix?3. Freezing. This might be related to the heat problem, but since I installed a new hdd, the laptop freezes for about 30 seconds before coming back to life again. It seems especially the case when watching video.4. Video. When watching video on VLC, if I jog the laptop only slightly, the video freezes or stutters. I have to keep the laptop perfectly still to avoid this. Is that normal?Any help with this would be much appreciated! Thanks kindly.

Answer:Various problems with Thinkpad Edge 13

What operating system do you use? How did you install the operating system? Did you use recovery media that you have burnt yourself, did you get system restore disks from Lenovo or did you use another method?

I have a Thinkpad Edge 431, it's about a year old. Now having issues with it randomly turning itself off while i'm working on it, and i think it's going into sleep mode since the indicator light is still blinking. However pushing the power button will not turn it back on. It will only turn on by holding down the power button for about 20 seconds, taking the battery out, or pushing the power button about a dozen times: any of these random options, or a combination of all three. Then it goes into windows recovery screen, saying windows was not shut down properly. Also getting the same issue when the computer goes to sleep.... I saw some people posting similar issue about the Tseries with the sleep mode so i turned off the sleep mode in my energy settings, but now its still continuing to randomly shut off while i'm working on. All I'm doing is using the internet or microsoft office. Seems this is a common issue with think pad, but what is the solution?? i keep losing my documents, because it can randomly shut off within 5 minutes of turning it back on at times.

Answer:Thinkpad E431 turns off and wont turn back on

I'm having similar problems with an R61e. It goes into the sleep mode whenever it chooses. Updating the BIOS did not help. In fact, the only way I could get it to boot was to remove the CMOS battery. Thinking the battery was dead, I replaced it, but no joy.Lenovo laptops have gremlins, and the lack of substantive responses to your post here suggests that there are not ready solutions. My guess is that the motherboards are failing, which makes the computers disposable as far as cost is concerned. While I love Lenovo desktops, the Thinkpads can be a concern. I worked on a Dell laptop a few days ago, and it was a joy. Everything was accessible, including the fan, by removing a few screws on the back plate. The CMOS battery is the standard CR2032. Reliability has to be as good as or better than Thinkpad.

I have an e241-a1 TV/monitor that I am using as a Lenovo laptop external monitor with an HDMI cable. I was not able to find support for the e241-a1 in the Vizio Website. I was told that I needed to set up PCM or LPCM on my laptop rather than Dolby Digital, but they could not tell me where that is in the Windows settings. I have a Thinkpad E431 627758U.

Whenever I'm watching a video and move the laptop, the video pauses for a second or two. This is getting very annoying - I got this laptop (the 14" i3 processor) 3 months ago, is this covered by my warranty? Also, some videos on YouTube show up all green and blurry, to the point where I can't see the video at all except a fuzzy green screen.  Please help!

I was looking into buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. I initially preferred E530 (model# 62724GU) over the idepads (such as model P500) with better configurations for over a hundred and fifty dollars less only because it had thinkpad in its name.  However, I am seeing so many complaints (such as fan issues, battery drain) for E530, I am not sure if bought one it would not have defects. Has anyone got a defect free E530? What is the average battery drain time on both E530 and P500 on moderate to heavy load?

I have 3 thinkpads that after a fresh reload are unable to connect to wireless networks. I have gone through and installed the different wireless drivers on the lenovo support website. I have gone through several steps of similar problems others have had but it hasn't made a difference. I have installed: HotKeys & patchPower manager & driverChipsetThe realtek network -ethernet adapter and communications LAN driverI have installed and removed each wireless adapter available Thinkpad Edge 15Type: 0319-46U On a side note in the Device manager screen there is a "Network Controller" alert saying no driver installed for this device. I have determined it is some Realtek device but beyond that I am lost.

Hello . . . I have a Thinkpad Edge (Product ID 0578CT0), and the screen will not display anything. Also, using HDMI output doesn't work. On booting, the laptop screen will "flash" black a couple times, but doesn't display anything. It started a couple of days ago. . . on resume from sleep, the screen would delay in displaying, then you would see a whole bunch of scan lines and "rolling" vertical video, then it would be fine. The last time, however, it never came back. Ideas? Jim

Dear Lenovo, I have started using ThinkPad Edge E440's and E540's in my company last year (June 2014) and have now been experiencing several horrible issues: 1. The default Windows 7 OS that came with the laptop gets corrupted when you install updates from Microsoft. This will hang after the initial restart and then will never boot again to windows not to mention 4 BSOD's before it gets totally corrupted, to a point that not even safe mode can boot into. if I do not update the OS from MS Updates, it will be working, but dead slow. I have 2 i7 8GB 1TB configuration and honest to goodness opinion my Core2Quad beats them hands down in performance.  2. The issue above will then have to be reformatted hence i have no recovery disks of Windows 7 so i have to use the Windows 8.1 recovery discs. which is a terrible OS and is not being used in our corporate setup. so then i have to use one of our licenses and this wastes our licenses because we originally ordered these laptops with windows 7. but then the same issue occurs with it hanging constantly and not able to connect to the wifi and BSOD's all around 3. After i have installed and updated windows 8.1, i will then update the drivers, and then will have to update the BIOS to 2.18 and then Wi-Fi will not work with the drivers that are found from your support site. you can only use WiFi again if you download the drivers from Intel or Realtek. 4. Suddenly my USB ports started disconnecting and reconnectin... Read more

Hello, I am looking to upgrade the Wifi card that came with my E431. Currently I have the Intel Centrino N2230 and was considering upgrading to Intel 7260 wireless card. I understand that Lenovo only allows whitelisted wifi cards to be used in their laptops and wanted to know if this was on the list and if not if there is a viavle alternative. I have: Windows 10Intel Centrino N2230BIOS: HEET48WW (version 1.29)BIOS Date: 03/13/2015 Thanks in advance! - Brian

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad E431 Wifi Card Upgrade for AC support?

Hello and welcome,

Something to keep in mind about the whitelist:  a card must be a whitelisted model and have a Lenovo FRU.  A generic card - even if the model is listed - won't pass.

The FRU list is here:  https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/e431_fru_list_20130430.pdf

I don't think any of the listed cards are AC, but please double-check that.

I have attached the screenshots of Power Manager in Advanced Mode
Note that - Design capacity is listed as 52 Whr but thats not true, it is 62 Whr (as mentioned on Laptop Box when received and also written on the battery itself) I have also attached the battery pics to justify it.

Also in Power Manager the Full Charge Capacity is listed 29 Whr which is not even 50% of its capacity.
I TRIED RESETTING THE BATTERY GAUGE, BUT IT ONLY INCREASED THE PROBLEM BY FURTHER REDUCING THE CHARGE CAPACITY (from 31 to 29 Whr)

Lastly the battery backup is worst - it hardly lasts 1 hour

And the most important thing - all this happened in last couple of weeks (I understand that battery looses its capacity over time but this is a sudden change which means something is faulty)

I TRIED EVERY POSSIBLE SOLUTION LIKE UPDATING BIOS, FIRMWARE AND SOFTWARE BUT NOTHING WORKED FOR ME

My system details are as follows
Serial No - Pxxxxxx
Model No - 62774UQ
Battery Barcode - 11S45N1054Z1ZKG83670RW

Or this software  just doesn't function correctly on my computer, and if it does is malfunctioned, what I'm I supposed to do to fix it? Thank you...

Oh,and here is another thing that I noticed. A couple of days ago, I deleted the hibernation partition on my SSD drive because it takes up 8gb of storage, and seldom do I use hibernation. But I noticed that after I deleted the partition, my computer's boot up time seems to be slower than before, does that partition has some thing to do with boot up time?

Hello! I hope you can help me. I have some problems with my Lenovo e125 thinkpad. My BIOS version is the latest (1.17) I've set the power button to sleep, and disabled the lid closing action. The first problem is, when I push the sleep button, and then close the lid, and I open it again, the computer doesn't wake up. But sometimes yes. The another (and more annoying) problem is, somethimes when I push the power button (what has set to sleep), the notebook competely restarts. My drivers are the latest, I've installed the latest AMD e450 driver from the AMD site. I hope you can help me! Thank you!

Answer:Sleep problems with my Thinkpad Edge e125

i encountered the same issue with my e325. i think i managed to solve it by setting the power button to sleep both in windows power management AND lenovo thinkvantage power manager (found in globar power settings tab). since that setting, i don't see a restart anymore and the sleep function works just fine.please try this yourself and let me know if it works for you too.

Hello, I am looking for a little bit of help. I have a Lenovo Edge 15 0319-46U laptop I recieved from my educational institution. I have had the laptop since fall of 2012. I've never had a single issue with the laptop except a month ago I noticed my wireless 1x1 b/g/n card stopped working. I'm well knoledged in computers and have already tried updating the drivers but I ran into an issue. My wireless card is no longer being shown on the Device Manager list under Network Adapters or "Unknown Devices", I only see my Wired gigabit card. I went into Bios, checked the button (did all the begginer stuff) and no dice. Wireless still does not work. I went ahead and ordered a new Intel Wireless card for said laptop and made sure the interface worked correctly, so my question is does anyone know of any fixes that could work even if the adapter is not shown on anywhere in the computer? And would anyone know if the Intel 7260-HMWNBWB Dual band card would be compatible with this machine? Thanks in advance for an answer.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 0319-46U wireless problems

Hello and welcome,

The ThinkPad BIOS has a wifi whitelist.  A card has to be a whitelisted model and have a Lenovo FRU number or the laptop will refuse to boot.  Generic cards - even with the correct model number - won't boot on an unmodified BIOS.

Page 113 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual  lists the compatible models and FRU numbers.

Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

Hi  For about 3 weekI have been using and enjoying my new Edge S430. But I have some problems, questions: 1) I found out that i have a SSD caching disk, but it wasn't specified in the specs from the company where I bought it, no can I find much about it on the official Lenovo site. That's more of a pleasant surprise but looking in taskmanager I see that the disk isnt used at all! Anyone know what to do about it? 2)When starting taskmanager it sometimes takes up to 3 min(!) to start it and display info... 3)Sometimes when plugged in and sometimes when not, the S430 wont go to sleep (i did check the settings, all is normal). 4)When waking the realtech headphone driver isn't enabled and plugging in the headphones wont make the speakers go mute. 5)How do I disable the screen (make it go black?) I would be grateful if some of my issues are fixed/explained. Many thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge S430 questions/problems

are you using the preinstalled windows 7 / 8 ? 1.) i don't know windows 8, but can you see the free space of a disk in the taskmanager? anyways here is how to check if the cache is active - open start menu - search for "cmd" - rightclick run as admin - enter "eccmd -info" post results 2.) that is very weird, never heard of that 5.) maybe there is a hotkey for the S430, elsewhise you can rightclick the power manager applet (if installed) -> turn screen off immediately. otherwise there are alternative programms that can do this for you hope i could help

If i was able to help - feel free to give Kudos

I have upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 to Windows 10 recently and since then I have been having increasing problems to connect to WiFi. It is not a problem with the WiFi itself, since I can connect with my phone and tablet without any problems and my husband has not had any problems with his laptop either. It started with just having to try to connect a couple of times (clicking disconnect and then connect again) in the beginning. Then it took restarting the computer. And now I can't connect anymore no matter how often I try or whatever I try. Initially I got an error message regarding the IP address when using the troubleshoot, but now it just can't find the problem. I have read that it could be a problem with the WiFi driver, which may need an update for Windows 10. The driver listed is Realtek RTL8188E LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have not been able to find this driver or any update for it on the Realtek website. I have not been able to find anything on the Lenovo or Windows website, or anywhere else for that matter, either. I have read posts by other users who are having similar issues, but I haven't been able to find a solution. Please let me know how I can solve this problem. Thank you.

Welcome in lenovo community,
Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the E545 laptop yet,
So you may go back to the previous windows and wait till lenovo release all the drivers.
Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update,

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing 25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

But now i am ready to switch on Windows seven and i am very sorry that i ve formated my HDD with pre installed windows 7.Somebody who has same machine PLS Can u give me your copy of recovery usb or link on it! Or any other help.THANKS!

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Answer:Numeric Keypad (on Fn+alpha keys) missing on Thinkpad X1 and Thinkpad Edge

As you are experiencing Fn+ alpha numeric keys are not working, I would suggest you to please update the Power Manager software and also update the Bios of your system from the below mentioned web link.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?

After this, please restart the system and check if the issue resolved.

Thanks & Regards,
Sameer

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

I have a ThinkPad 431 with Windows 7 the BIOS  turned on for always on.I switched on the USB option always on in lenovo utility. Thinkpad has 3 USB ports, two on the left and one on the right. The one on the right works when the thinkpad is in hibernation. The left ones don't. When thinkpad is on, all ports charge. Is this by design or is there a problem with my Thinkpad unit. I really realy need two ports for charging.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 431 Powered USB charging at only one port when thinkpad is in hibernate

I should mention that I don't have any yellow USB port. Neither the left or the right ones have yellow.

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.

Question: Thinkpad Edge 14

I've recently received my Edge 14 and upon unboxing, I noticed the top of the laptop (the back of the screen) is curved.  I've seen countless videos and customer photos of their Edge and have not seen this on their's.  The curved screen is very noticeably.  You can also see that the speakers are curved as well due to it.  Does anyone know if its suppose to be like this?  If not then do you think I can get a full refund and none of that 15% restocking free junk?  Besides, I don't think I'm at fault here but rather who ever built the thing.  I am fairly disappointed to see this because I hear Thinkpads are quality built.  This is my first Thinkpad and my first impression was it is just another cheaply made laptop.  I've also bought the sleeve for this and that doesn't even fit properly.  Theres a huge gap when you place the laptop in.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14

Hello mate, Can you take a photo of your laptop ?And for the sleeve, it's because you've got the room for the AC adapter.

just recently bought my first laptop and got good recommendations on lenovo...however i have found everything else to be fairly frustrating. There are no instructions regarding inital battery setup to ensure lengevity in the box. i called customer service. i looked online. they directed me to go back online and read a manual which still did not have the proper information and was organized extremely poorly. basically im just venting a little about my lack of satisfaction and wondering how to get the most out of battery/. I have looked everywhere.

Answer:New Thinkpad edge 14

New owner here also. There was limited documentation in the box, and on the last pages of something that looked like generic policy / license info, I found a few basic instructions. Of note, the battery may not have full capacity until it has been fully charged and discharged for several cycles. Agreed documentation is not the best, but everything is pretty straightforward, except detailed configurations, which is always trial and error. So far, I really like the notebook.

Recently, my HDD has begun to grind to a halt on my Thinkpad Edge e420. I decided to replace the HDD to an SSD, and after many, many unsuccessful attempts to reinstall the OS via Rescue and Recovery, cloning the drive etc, I decided to install the OS onto the new SSD using a windows disk. While this seems to have worked, I now no longer have any of the preinstalled Lenovo software. This is disappointing, but also seems to have reduced the functionality of the laptop (eg the networking device is no longer recognised).Could anyone please recommend a method of reinstalling the Lenovo software onto this new SSD.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 420 HDD to SSD

Windows 7 right? Download ThinkVantage System Update, it should download most of the drivers and applicable softwares for your E420.

I currently own a Lenovo Thinkpad r61i with a 15 inch screen 1gig of ram, 6.5 lb. and windows vista! I am wanting to buy a new laptop. I am a student and I have my laptop everywhere I go and I need something light, pretty fast, and gets good battery life. I think I want to buy the thinkpad edge, but I have a few questions for people who have already bought it.  How have you handled there being no CD drive. I was thinking that I wouldn't have a problem because I mainly download software but I want to know how others handled it. I think I would image a cd on another computer and mount it with WinMountIs the 1.3ghz CULV processor good for this computer. I really don't want it to hang as that is my current problem or with the high ram is it fineHow is the new keyboard layout. I am constantly typing on my current thinkpad and I want to make sure that it is a good layout as I am constantly taking notes and writing essays    Please answer,Jeremy

Answer:Should I Buy the ThinkPad Edge

Hi Jeremy. I just got my Edge about a week ago.  I am also a college student.  I haven't had any problems getting around the CD drive.  My husband loaded Windows 7 Ultimate to a flash drive, then loaded it onto my computer.  I like not having it.  I was constantly bumping into the open button on my Vaio.  Very irritating when you are taking a timed exam online!  The Edge isn't as light as a netbook but it is pretty light.  I had a hard time deciding on the S10-3t or the Edge (as is evidenced by my posts on these boards--very embarrassing!!).  I am very glad I changed my mind and ordered this one.  I have the AMD Neo X2 L325 (1.5mhz) so I can't help with your question about the 1.3.  What I can tell you is that I haven't had a single issue with hanging.  This machine is very responsive.  I have a Thinkpad z60m.  The keyboard layout seems very similar to me.  I haven't had any trouble acclimating.  AND I LOVE this keyboard.  It has a better feel than the z60m, and that's saying something!  Prior to using this Edge, the Z60m was my favorite keyboard hands down.  I write quite bit (English/Communications major) and this keyboard is very comfortable. Battery power is pretty good.  I'm sure you'd get a lot more out of a netbook. I hope that helps a little. Karen

Hello, I am going to be using this laptop for Senior School, already 1 term in and am hating the laptop we recieved 2 years ago. I would prefer if a Lenovo Staff or Moderator can confirm if this is possible to buy as it's not on the Customize page. With the 14" model, I can get the 9 cell battery option but no choice of the Intel Centrino Advanced 6200N wireless card, and with the 15" model I can't get either. I know it's possible to use that card with the edge, but why isn't it avaialable to choose? The same with the 15" with a 9 cell battery option? Cheers, Matt. [This is from the Australian Store]

Question: Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi,i had a problem with the monitor backlight on my E525. It went totally gone and i needed a flashlight to see anything. I deinstalled the graphics drivers and it was fine again. Answer:Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi, startrip

I think I found what you're looking for. This is the driver for the AMD graphics that your computer uses. To find drivers on Lenovo's site easily, go to support.lenovo.com, click on Driver Matrix, select the line of computer you have (ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, etc.) and then select your system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi,     I have recently bought a Thinkpad Edge (AMD / L625) to replace my dependable but very aged Dell Precision M50. The Think Pad Edge I think is a great machine and does everything that I want it to do. One minor niggle and I think it only bugs me because of my engineering background is the systems specs. The Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1325 which is powered by the same processor and chipset can support 8GB of RAM, whereas the Edge can only support 4GB. Given that the memory controller is integrated into the Turion CPU and it is unlikely that Lenovo had AMD fab a custom CPU, shouldn't the edge also support 8GB of RAM. Has anyone tested an 8GB of RAM on an edge?If so does it work?Have Lenovo limited the Edge's RAM capacity through its hardware or software implementation? One final question if the system does support 8GB of RAM does the RADION 3200 IGP then take control of 512MB of system ram, rather than the 256MB when using 4GB of RAM. I was only thinking about this upgrade as a midlife refresh to give the system a little bit more horsepower. Kingston, Crucial and Corsair, to name just a few all make compatible 4GB memory modules, or atleast they conform to the specs of the current 2GB modules. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

Answer:Thinkpad EDGE - AMD - 8GB RAM ?

welcome to the forum!

since the edge likely wasn't tested with 6GB or 8GB, the specs didn't reflect the system's full capability.   the same thing happened with the X61 and T61 systems.   they were rated at 4GB maximum but many users (myself included) are successfully running 8GB.

i'm not personally aware of any limitations in memory.   8GB and even 16GB (if 8GB DDR3 modules are ever released to the public) should be possible.

with that said, i cannot say definitively whether 8GB is supported but i'd be very, very surprised if it weren't.   i have an edge sitting on my desk with 2 x 2GB installed but unfortunately don't have any 4GB DDR3 modules to test.   if i get my hands on a 4GB module or two before this system leaves my office then i'll let you know the results.

enjoy your new system!

I have the above laptop:
Serial number: ************
I want to add more memory and the detailed specification for this model(E530) states that the maximum memory is 8GB

I have looked at and spoken to two reliable suppliers of memory who both indicate on their websites and have confirmed by phone that the maximum is 16Gb (2 x 8GB).

Can anyone please advise me which is correct. If 16GB is possible are there inherent risks or other modifications involved?

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 530 C13/3120M

Hello yorkie9, welcome to the forums,

I don't know if, in the meantime, you've found your answer elsewhere but the answer is yes. 16GB is possible in your E530 and the other websites were correct; the Lenovo site states what was correct at the time when there were no 8GB RAM modules being manufactured.

Hope this helps you or at least someone else.

Hey all,For more than a month now, I've been experiencing a weird issue with my Thinkpad Edge 14, which displays itself as a weird screen flickering upon the computer being frozen (attached are pictures and a short video of the issue which is hard to describe). After which, I have to force shutdown the machine. Also, sometimes the issue displays itself as a blue screen and then reboots. Usually, after the shutdown/reboot, the computer doesn't boot, but rather turns the fan on high speed, but the screen remains black. After shutting down and turning the machine on again, the computer boots itself. At start, the problem used to only occur when running a heavy game like Civilization V, but not during regular use such as browsing, online video watching etc, so I wasn't really worried but still took the computer to a technician. With time, the problem grew worse and used to happen a few times a day, mainly while watching videos online via flash video viewers and similar usage. I have visited a computer technician who replaced the laptop's cooling system and fan. for a day or two, the machine worked fine, but with time, the problem came back, and has become worse. Now days the laptop is UNUSEABLE, even on simple use like facebook or simple web viewing freezes or displays the same symptoms. even upon not using the computer at all, and even while booting up or starting Windows ! I'll be happy to give more information as need. I'm really quite desperate and don't re... Read more
