ThinkPad E530 and the case of the vanished SSD (msata 2101)

Question: ThinkPad E530 and the case of the vanished SSD (msata 2101)

(i have updated the title. sounds more like it. ^_^) Greetings ! I am a proud (well, yes ...) owner of the E530 A3G-Model sporting a 16GB SSD.Yes, the one with the pulsy, noisy fan. ^_^ The Story: Last week i thought i'd need a change and try something new. As i'm not really a noob oncomputers, i thought i'd set up Win7 x64 SP1 on the SSD. That's ... not that easy, considering the size, so i've spent the weekend removing irrelevant components ...... like Natural Language, Speech Support, Language Packs ...... from the Win7 x64 SP1 Installation Disks. It took me two days to get it to work, with several testing sessions using VirtualBox,but then i got it right. I haven't removed any drivers, services or anything actually essentialwhich could break the system. (I promise!) So ... after a long session in VirtualBox and installing this system on a small partition on my HDDto verify it REALLY works, i went going on to install it on the SSD. Please note that RapidBoot is turned off in the BIOS and i have removed ExpressCache, which i had previously installed manually, but wasn't actually caching anything anymore, for reasons i don't understand. Maybe i have turned it off weeks ago, i don't know. So, i have set up a 3GB FAT32 partition at the beginning of the SSD for the pagefile. It's a habit. It's a good idea to do this on HDDs, so i kept doing it. Longevity of the SSD was no issue for me,as if it breaks ... well, then it breaks ... but then it would break in honor, having served me well. The rest of the SSD got partitioned NTFS, for Win7 x64 SP1, which installed *successfully*.The installation process went *flawlessly* and it also ran *flawlessly*. So ... i've started installing drivers from my HDD, which are all in this nice SWTOOLS folder, onto the SSD. Easy cheesy, clicked through the symbols in my Device Manager and let itrun through the folder, to update the drivers. The first odd thing i've noticed was that, after establishing an internet connection, the ThinkPad PM Driver got named into Lenovo PM Driver. Okay, well, so be it, i thought. All drivers actually installed smoothly. No issues. Nothing. Reboots worked. All good. Then ... i've started Windows Update. I have done this in the VirtualBox so i knew there werequite a lot updates to be downloaded (around 280MByte) ... but it didn't get very far. Here it starts: The green bar, which indicates searching, kept pulsing. The visible windows were all stuck, but the mouse still could be moved. I thought ... okay ... that's odd ... but left it for a few minutes. As nothing changed for 10min, i've reset the system. That may not have been a smart thing to do,but as not even the Task Manager came up, it was the *only choice i had*. Now ... i can't recall if the 2101 Error displayed at this time already, but i can recall having tried toboot into the OS on the SSD again and it took ages. Ages. After 5min watching the pulsingWindows ButterFly, i thought "Okay, that's odd" and reset the system. (Actually, after i have written the whole post, i'm not sure anymore if i actually triedbooting onto the SSD now, or if the error came up already. I'm sorry for this lack of memory,it was past 0100am.) In hindsight, i know i should have waited longer, but that may not actuallyhave changed anything. Now i'll never know. So ... after this reboot ... Lenovo Boot Splash Screen ... BEEP ... msata 2101 blabla HDD2 not found etc.F***! Okay ... no worry ... let's see. Booted into the HDD OS ... the pulsing butterfly again ...... waiting ... waiting ... waiting ... waiting ... okay i'll have a smoke ... 5min later ... the login sound. I know this kind of waiting. It's the waiting that happens when a driver delays everything, for reasons only the driver knows, unwilling to share it with the user. So ... finally, the HDD OS booted up. I'm glad. I log in ... and wait. BlackScreen. Wait. Wait.Desktop comes up. System is heavily unresponsive. I'm starting the Task Manager. Waiting. It starts.Show all processes."System" is at 25%, indicating it's hogging a CPU core ... for unknown reasons. I open up the Device Manager. One Exclamation Mark on Yellow Background:Lenovo PM Driver. I run the Windows Please-Help-Me-And-Find-Out-What's-Going-On-Program. It suggests updating the driver ... so i tried updating the driver via Windows Update ... and it did. Now ... i have *no* idea where that issue comes from and updating the driver did not help at all.Right now, the exclamation mark again is present, so i simply *deactivated* it in the Device Manager, but haven't rebooted yet. The PC is still running and i doubt it'll have a serious impact. I already deletedit from the Device Manager once, just to see it get reinstalled. So ... this is the whole story, in right order. Complete. Windows Update, for some odd reason, broke something. I doubt the reboots are part of this, but there may be a first time for anything. In the now: I have googled this extensively, within limited options regarding search terms. I have removed the SSDand plugged it in again, but it changed nothing. I am researching on how to find the one driver whichcauses the boot delay (which only happens when the SSD is plugged in, btw), which - i hope - givesme more options ... but as of yet, i'm still researching. I might try bootvis, because i know it does stuff like that. So ... after telling you my story (hope you had a nice read and you're at work, wasting your time ^_^),if there is ANYBODY OUT THERE who knows **bleep** is going on, I'd REALLY appreciate ANY advise !Except: unplug the SSD and forget it. That's not an option. ^_^ Thank you for your time, i hope you like detailed posts about malfunctions happening.

Preferred Solution: ThinkPad E530 and the case of the vanished SSD (msata 2101)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey what do you think, would it be possible to somehow form a RAID SSD system inside Thinkpad Edge E530? Same type as Acer Aspire S7 which is famous of its high performance. So probably it would be raid 0. For example you put 256GB mSata SSD and 256GB 2.5" SSD and form a raid 0 of them. I guess the best would be to have the same SSDs (e.g. Samsung PM830 in mSata and Samsung 8300 in 2.5", which I hope are very similar). Maybe the big problem would be to buy a good mSata drive because retailers dont have them...?   Do you have any idea how it is implemented in Acer Aspire S7 (or S5). Is it a hardware RAID so that OS sees it as a single disk or a software raid (combined inside OS) ...?    If RAID is not possible do you think you would achive high performance just by MSata SSD (e.g. 128GB Samsung), where you would install OS, and then have the 2.5" slot for 1TB hard drive, and in addition optical drive...?

Answer:mSata + 2.5" together in RAID (thinkpad edge e530)...?

E530 doesn't support RAID. mSATA slot on the E530 is a SATAII connection, while the main hdd bay and optical drive bay is SATAIII. If you don't need the optical drive, then you can remove it and install a hdd drive caddy in it.

Hello I got this new laptop as a gift.  I wanted to upgrade the laptop with mSata 16gb SanDisk SSD to use it for caching purpose... I see I have an empty slot in WWAN slot that I could use the mSata...I called Lenovo and asked for that part (45N8331) so they transferred me to the Parts Dept.  I asked for that part -- the lady said it will cost $523.95 for that part...I fell over backwards!  I thought NO WAY!  It must be a mistake! I see hundreds of SSD for sale all over...none under 32gb costs that high!  I can understand 256Gb and larger would cost that much...  I only want a simple 16Gb SSD designed to work with ThinkPad Edge e530...  I pray that one of you know where to get that part for much lower price. If you, Lenovo, are reading this posting and see that it is an error in price...please let me know!! Many thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge e530 and purchase new Lenovo Part # 45N8331 - mSata 16gb SSD

The 64 gigs Samsung SATA that i got with the ThinkCentre M92z was a 280 dollars option when you purchase the desktop from Lenovo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/7782185634/It is expensive as an aftermarket part from Lenovo, because Lenovo don't really stock it and no one really buys it as a separate part from Lenovo. You are better off getting large one from different vendors.

Really want to buy E530. But here, in OZ. they don't offer SSD option. So I am thinking buy a E530 and adding a SSD through msata or swap out the optical driver and put in a SSD. Tried with lenovo sales support rep. Got refered to tech team. Then tech team kicked me back to sales dep again.  really confused. I am looking at this one: http://shopap.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/auweb/LenovoPortal/en_AU/builder.workflow:Enter?sb... Thanks in advance

Hi, I just received my T430 about 4 days ago and it's working perfectly until I was trying to install important windows updates. As I was rebooting my laptop after the installation (which fails everytime I don't know why), my computer gave me a loud beep and a error code of 2101 detection error. So I searched this forum and found this solution http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 from another post that had the same problem as mine.As i was following the steps,( i did cmd, uninstalled express cache, and did disk managment) but as i went on my disk management i could not find my mSATA. I have a 16 gb mSATA and it was working perfectly fine before. I've noticed on my reboot that it took longer to load and the error message would then come up.So my problem is that I cannot view my mSATA disk on my disk managementThankyou!

Answer:2101 Detection Error: Cannot view my mSATA

The Error 2101: Detection error on HDDx miniSata is a BIOS error. This has nothing to do with the operating system you have installed or any drivers. During the POST, the system does not see the miniSata drive. I (like some others) received my new T530 recently, setup it all up and then a few hours later received this error. The solution is simple. You must open up your ThinkPad. Remove the two keyboard screws and remove the keyboard and RE-SEAT the miniSata drive. There is 1 screw holding the board down. Remove it, re-insert it in. Screw everything back up and voila, no more issue. Go to the Lenovo / ThinkPad Guides and Manuals page for your device (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?) and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your ThinkPad. There are clear instructions (for those less inclined) on how to remove the keyboard. You do NOT need to disconnect the ribbon cable. Simple / carefully slide the keyboard forward and the miniSata drive will be visible and accessible. You can also use the ExpressCache program to get stats on the miniSata drive and see how it is working. Open a Command Prompt (in Administrator Mode) and issue the command: eccmd -info   -   Display ExpressCache activity informatio eccmd -?   -  Will show you all options eccmd -format   - Will reformat and clear the cache drive. Hopefully, this will help out those out there with this issue. I tried very hard to find an official answer. I had my x220 bios updated to 1.40 version and installed the mSata 500GB EVO SSD drive to the laptop. It has never been detected successfully.  It was a big hard to insert the mSata drive to the slot and finally it was in the write position I'm pretty sure and the screw is aligned... Any idea?

Answer:mSata Samsung 850 EVO SSD in X220... 2101 Detectio...

Hello,

I have only tried a couple mSATA SSDs in my ThinkPad X220, but each one was detected immediately without any error.

Do you know if the 500GB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD worked before you used it?  Perhaps you could try it in another machine, or with an mSATA to 2.5" adapter, just to verify that it works correctly?  Although it is pretty rare to occur, you could have gotten one that is just not working.

Answer:Intermitent 2101 detection Issues with new T530 and mSATA

Called Crucial support.   They had me change the Intel 7 AHCI controller driver from Intel to the Standard Microsoft driver.  They suspect that the Intel driver is causing the drive to not shutdown properly.  I'll see how it performs with the generic driver for awhile.

So I've read through the history of the msata and the x220 (4286-CTO) and how the BIOS revisions were required during the middle of last year in order to get the Intel 310 and some others to work. Thinking that my little x220 with Bios revision 1.26 (i7, 8gb, 4286-CTO) would be fine, I purchased a Kingston SSDNow mS100 64GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SMS100S2/64G and installed it yesterday. The instal went without a hitch, but when I restarted the machine, I received a 2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata) error.   I've seen that the 2101 error has been mentioned in relation to a couple of Sandisk msata drives on the forum, but those discussions didn't seem to go anywhere. I just got off my second call with Lenovo support (30 minutes today and 25 minutes last night), only to have them tell me that msata is not supported by my 4286-CTO.  That sounds incorrect, as others with the 4286-CTO seem to have luck with Intel and Renice. What am I doing wrong?  Is this something that another BIOS revision could cure?  At least on one of the sandisk discussions, the OP said that he/she had tested the drive in another computer without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual drives.   Somebody else mentioned that some drives are not compliant with the JEDEC standard, but that doesn't sound like an explanation to me either.  Thoughts?  Help! Best, sad x220

Answer:2101 Error: X220 with Kingston 64GB msata

I have the same issue with x220.  The mSATA I have is the Sandisk SDSA4DH-064G.  I can also add that the function of the mSATA is the same regardless of whether the mSATA is used in the mSATA slot or on an adapter card in the SATA hard drive bay (Error is 2100 rather than 2101, but the text is the same).  For this reason, I believe the Lenovo BIOS is unable to configure the mSATA drive appropriately.  I imagine that Lenovo could quickly resolve this with a new BIOS. I have tested this drive on a desktop consisting of a Asus P9X79 Deluxe + Intel 3960x running Windows 7, 64-bit.  Device is recognized by BIOS and WIndows Disk Manager.

I've read a lot about the 2101 Detection Error of mSATA issue on x220 with mSATA other than intel 310 installed. Last year I purchased a W520 and an Intel 310 mSATA. They worked fine together untill yesterday. I have windows 7 enterprice 64bit installed on the mSATA and linux installed on an SSD. I have a 500GB HDD installed in the ultrabay, as a shared data volume shared by Windows and Linux. Everytime I try to boot windows, it fails. And during the next reboot, the "2101 Detection Error" shows up. To try to solve this problem I have the mSATA reseated and the 2101 error disappears, until I try to boot windows again. Everything works fine IF I ONLY BOOT LINUX. 2101 Detection Error shows up everytime I TRY TO BOOT WINDOWS UP. I've updated the UEFI BIOS to the latest version which is 1.36 but the problem is still there. I've used the lenovo diagnosis tool (bootable usb) to run a set of quick tests and no error detected (except for drive self test either not supported or not passed). Please find the configuration of my laptop below:======================================W520-4270CTOCPU:                                 I7 2720 QMMEMORY:                        16GB (4GB SAMSUNG X 4)VIDEO:                   ... Answer:E530 - can I add an mSATA SSD?

Hey there matt890,

Typically, some E530 have the option for 16GB mSATA SSD that is installed in the PCIe mini slot, so it stands to reason you should be able to install a mSATA SSD to the PCIe mini card slot as well. What are your goals for the SSD? ExpressCache/Intel Rapid Start or just extra storage?

For indepth specifications it is always recommended to check the PSRef, the E530 starts on page 35.

Answer:E530 MSATA SSD

The 16GB mSATA ssd (Sandisk) from Lenovo includes a serial number which is required when you install Lenovo's ExpressCache (Sandisk/Condusiv).  I'm sure there are other HW/SW combinations that can be made to work but I don't know if they are as effective as the Lenovo combination.

mSATA 2 or mSATA 3 in Edge E530 with ivy bridge intel i5 ?  I have Adata SSD XPG SX300 128GB mSATA3.  Ps.Sandy Bridge Edge E530 have mSATA 2. Notebookcheck:"We tested the mSATA slot's performance with a 64 GB Crucial M4 mSATA SSD and achieved much better results than a conventional hard disk. 266MB/s in sequential read and 160MB/s in data transfer are impressive. Low access times of 0.1 ms ensure an excellent user experience. The mSATA speeds are not a characteristic of SATA 3 capable SSDs. We suspect that the mSATA drive is connected to the slower and older SATA 2 port that is preventing the SSD from achieving its default performance. So, you do not need to buy the fastest SSD model if you are planning to upgrade. Instead you can focus on price and capacity for your selection."

Question: E530 mSATA missing

Hi all, I tried to replace the bottom case of my Lenovo E530 laptop and ended up losing my 16GB mSATA SamSung card (it was with the laptop when I bought it). I believe it was used to boot the laptop and I'm not sure how I can replace it....(power can be turned on...laptop can be charged...no beeping...everything seems fine...only monitor is black) I know IBM sells the same thing for $150...but really it's too expensive My thought is to buy an empty one and install the OS on it...i don't really know much about mSATA and installation though.... Please advise!!

Answer:E530 mSATA missing

the 16 gigs mSATA is just a cache drive, there isn't any OS on it. You can just buy a normal mSATA of any size (anything more than 32 gigs is a waste), then restore the cache function. http://support.lenovo.com/en_AU/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404

I am choosing a new Lenovo laptop and have been looking at the W, T, and E series Thinkpads. I am trying to get my goals accomplished with some cost savings so an E series is my first shot. I am looking at the 430 and 530 to get USB3 and a gen3 i series CPU. My first question relates to mSATA. How is this drive connected? Does it consume one of the 2 mini PCIe slots? Does it become a seperate drive with a unique drive letter (iow, does it function like a completely seperate HDD)? Can I put whatever I want on either drive (OS, data, etc)? What are the parameters on what kind of mSATA drive I can use? Is there any benefit to having the 16G mSATA drive installed in the new build? Thanks, George

Answer:mSATA for E430/E530

it uses the WWAN slot, which is the full size mPCIe slot, the other mPCIe slot is a half length slot for the wireless card. If you install the drive yourself, then it can become a separate hdd. You can put data or OS on it, like a normal hdd.If you get the one shipped (16 gigs or 32 gigs mSATA from factory) with the laptop from the factory, then the drive will be used as a cache where temporary files that are frequently accessed, it speeds up the laptop. But it won't be a separate hdd element.

Hi there, After about month of use I suddenly got an error: "2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata)". Simply while browsing the internet system hung up and after reboot the error appeared.I've read that people here had same error just after mounting their SSD's - mine worked fine for few weeks. The problem appeared short time after auto-updating BIOS but not just after flash. 2 or 3 restarts gone smoothly.Strange is that now my BIOS version is still 1.16 when on the web since last Wednesday hangs ver. 1.17 - the update went on Saturday.Any ideas how to avoid sending anything (Laptop and SSD) to RMA? I have already RMA ticket from OCZ but want to save some time and don't want to lose the data.Besides I'm not sure if it isn't issue of the new BIOS from Lenovo. Thanks in advance for any help.Gootchio

Hi there,I installed an mSata 64GB drive inside the socket and installed Win7 on it.Everything worked well for about 2 years, until one day I got BSOD and after rebooting the machine I got a grey screen and nothing happens. i.e I cant even access the bios settings. I called the support and they told solved the problem by updating my BIOS, but told me that this situation was caused by me installing an OS on a drive ment to be used for express cache. My thinkpad worked well couple of monthes and now it happed again. Same grey screen before BIOS settings. When I take out the mStata drive I get  to the bios setup and it fails booting from my regular HD (obviously cause there is no OS installed there)  I gave up using the mSata drive as an OS drive. But it still want to use it as an express cache.  The thing is that each time I install it into the socket and turn on my machine I get the same pre-bios settings grey screen. Even after I set the regular HD to be first boot device.  Before I call 'em again. Any ideas?

Hello,I bought E530 without mSATA SSD and then bought myDigital SSD 32G seperately. I reinstalled the operational system and try to install expresscache by myself.I searched lenovo's website and found a instruction for enable expresscache after replacing SSD.http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT073737 Although I couldn't find official expresscache provide by lenovo, I follow the instruction, with expresscache software download from Sumsung which I believe should be the same. And it did show up "configuration successful". However, my laptop boots slower than before. I think expreesscache is not functional at all in my case. But I don't know what's wrong with my procedure.  Have anyboby tried enabling expresscache for E530/E430 with third part mSATA SSD? Thank you if you would like to share your experience.

Answer:how to enable Expresscache for E530 with third part mSATA SSD

Hi greenwoods, If you have a Lenovo laptop, I wouldn't recommend trying to install a driver for ExpressCache from Samsung. Instead, I would open a support ticket and someone will assist you with this issue. See here - http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-service/SubmitRequestOnline.page Hope this helps! -Alex

Hi, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E530 laptop and I want to install a mSATA SSD as boot drive and make a clean Windows 7 install on it, and to use the HDD drive only for data storage. I want to know if this is possible or mSATA is only for cache purposes and if somebody here has done it before.  Thanks a lot.Pablo

Answer:mSATA SSD as boot drive in Lenovo E530

It's really crazy. I have E531. I also want to buy SSD drive. And cannot understand which one - mSATA or just ssd sata to replace the HDD. I wouldn't mind to keep both. But with all that support, there is no clear explanation if I can buy lets say samsung 840 evo msata drive and install it in that slot. Can I? Or I should just buy 840 evo ssd sata and replace the hdd?

Hi Community, when I chose the upgradeoptions for the E530 I'm buying, something confused me. The graphics-card was described as WWAN and mSATA capable. The question is, does the graphics-card use the mSATA slot? It would be a shame, as I wanted to build in a ssd. I contacted my local support and they told me, it would. On the other hand...they were absolutely sure the Intel HD IGP would use the mSATA-slot as well, which would be...strange...So.Has anyone of you got experience with the GT635M in the E530?Oh and in the store there are two different E530. One with a resolution of 1366x768 and the other one with the HD+ screen with a resolution of 1600x900. Why doesn't Lenovo allow Artic-Blue and Heatwave-Red covers on the 1366x768 version and more importantly for me, why doesn't it allow the Midnight-Black cover on the 1600x900 version? Theyre both the same size! And I think its unimportant for the laptop-cover which resolution the screen's got. Is there any possibility of changing the cover without breaking the warranty or changing the order?(It's not been sent nor built yet)Thank you for your answers in beforehand.MfG MrBlati(ps: as english isn't my native language, I want to excuse any writing/spelling-error in the text )

Hi there, I've got an E530 with a WWAN card preinstalled. I would like to install an mSATA mPCI-e SSD in the mPCI-e slot. Is this possible? Is the mPCI-e slot compatible with mSATA mPCI-e SSDs? I'm looking to do a clean install of the Windows 8 core OEM that came installed on the E530 on it and format the 1TB HDD it came with for storage.

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

Hi all, I hope your are having an awesome week, I have an small issue with my laptop. Here are some details: Model: E530 (3259 AJG)OS: Win 8.1 Pro x64 bitsBIOS: v2.54 (latest one from the website) So the problem is my USB 3.0 on the left side (3 of them) don't recognize any external storage with USB 3.0. I have a Kingston Rubber USB 3.0 flash drive and when I plug it into the port, nothing happens. When I plug into the SuperCharge port on the other side (the yellow one) it works right out out of the bat. All devices in Device manager are recognized and they have their drivers. When I use the USB 3.0 ports with other devices: I have a Creative go Pro! soundcard I have no problem, when I plug in my Steelseries mouse I have no problem. But when I plug external hard drives or flashdrives with USB 3.0- nothing happens. I can't boot for Windows installation from them as well. I saw some other people had issues with this as well, but got no response. So, if any one knows how to deal with this, please please please tell me what I can do.

Hello, i need to use F5 key alot, but every time i have to press the Fn key aswell. Would it be possible to change the F5 key settings and how?

Solved!

Answer:Is it possible to use F5 key without pressing Fn on Thinkpad E530

There are 2 ways to do this:

1.  In start menu, type "Keyboard" and choose the Keyboard option that appears under "Control Panel".  There is a tab "ThinkPad F1-F12 keys", and you can change the option to "Legacy" to use F1-F12 buttons as standard function keys as you wish.

2.  Reboot the system and press Enter at the ThinkPad logo screen.  Then press F1 to enter BIOS setup.  In the "Config" menu, choose "Keyboard/Mouse".  Then change the option for "Change to F1-F12 keys" to "Legacy".  Then press F10 to save and exit.

Just try running a benchmark program (the windows performance tester works fine). The fan should kick in, but just keep an eye on the temperatures just to be sure.

I just purchased a Thinkpad E530. The problem is that it comes preinstalled with win 8 and I want to install linux instead. During boot I press F12 to get the boot menu and select my DVD drive, but the drive just spins up and then I get returned to the boot menu. I read something about that I need to disable UEFI Secure boot in the bios (which I did) and then set the UEFI/Legacy Boot to Legacy only (did that too), but it still won't work. I'm so frustated about this, that I'm considering returning the laptop.

Answer:Thinkpad E530 won't boot from CD

See if this helps:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=HT076905

Restart the PC and press F1 to enter Setup.
For ThinkPad: Navigate to the RESTART menu. For ThinkCentre and ThinkStation:  Navigate to the EXIT menu
Select OS Optimized Defaults and change the value to Disabled.
Select Yes to continue to disable the OS Optimized Defaults.
Press F9 to load Setup Defaults.
Select Yes to confirm the loading default configuration.
Press F10 to save and exit Setup.
If necessary, press F12 to access the boot menu and select your boot device.

If this doesn't fix the problem, double-check to make sure your DVD can be booted on another computer.

There have been threads in the past about CPU upgrades. Have you read those? Probably a good first starting point. Also, remember that a computer usually seems faster when the thoughput is increased.  It is influenced by processor speed, memory, hard disk speed and gpu speed.  Changing just one parameter usually doesn't have much of a difference unless it was THE significant bottleneck for your intended application. Good luck.

I was looking into buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. I initially preferred E530 (model# 62724GU) over the idepads (such as model P500) with better configurations for over a hundred and fifty dollars less only because it had thinkpad in its name.  However, I am seeing so many complaints (such as fan issues, battery drain) for E530, I am not sure if bought one it would not have defects. Has anyone got a defect free E530? What is the average battery drain time on both E530 and P500 on moderate to heavy load?

Hi Yiri,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are getting an error message stating ?An NVIDIA graphics card was not detected in your system? in your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530.

Make sure NVIDIA GPU is not disabled in BIOS. If you set it to optimus, then only you can get the switchable option for switching between on board graphics and NVDIA.

Restart your system and get in to safe mode. Go to device manager and uninstall the NVIDIA drivers. Run NVIDIA Smart Scan which will auto-detect the latest version of driver compatible for your system and install it.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mohamedsherif79,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with USB port on ThinkPad E530.

Check if the issue persists in Safe mode also.
Have you checked with all the port, or only through USB 3.0 it is not working?
Clear all the USB root hubs from device manager and restart the system.
Check the system with booting from bootable OS, and check if the mouse is working.

If the issue still persists after performing above troubleshooting then I suggest you to check with reinstalling the Operating System.

Hope this helps.

Answer:Which SSD does the ThinkPad Edge E530 N4F6LMN use?

Perhaps there is something special for that model but I believe most (all?) E530 use the 16GB mSATA ssd available from Lenovo. It's about $40.  It's designed to be used for caching not secondary storage.  If you get it, you can download the proper ExpressCache SW and use the product code in the front of the ssd manual to install it. My concern about using a larger drive in that slot (miniPCI) is if there is sufficient amperage. You can also obtain a third-party HDD caddy to replace the optical drive for additional secondary storage. Of course, I'm assuming that either of these 'upgrades' might void your warranty.

If it is, it can be found in the Start menu (the Metro UI). If it is not for some reason, this can be downloaded from the Windows Store.

If you open this app, select the Camera option and make sure it is set to Normal. This should make the camera work as it should.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Welcome to the community!

I believe that the only laptops in Lenovo's multiple product lines that have multi-touch displays (pen + finger) are the tablet PCs, like the X230T and some of the IdeaPads. If I'm mistaken, I'm sure a Lenovo expert will be along shortly to correct me, but at this point I'd say you don't have 'touch' capability on your Edge.

Answer:any way to control fan speed of thinkpad E530?

Hey Hardy,

If you Google you can find a few programs you can use like SpeedFan, TPfancontrol and such and suggest you look over these programs and see which one works for you.

Also remember that in BIOS you have power management settings that effect fan speed and also in power manager.

Best Regards,

Hiro

I bought the ThinkPad Edge E530 (3259), but after many attempts, I managed to install bluetooth. I press Fn + F5 to open the control panel to enable the WiFi and Bluetooth radios, I installed acces point. In the Control Panel under "Device Manager" in the control panel have any yellow exclamation sign if its your bluetooth device or bluetooth not written anywhere. The BIOS is included enable Bluetooth. I start installing one of the two drivers, I get this message

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E530 and bluetooth

I'm also having problems with finding a way to enable the Bluetooth adapter. Unusual is that the Wi-Fi is working (I think the adapter for Wi-Fi and for Bluetooth is the same), but bluetooth doesn't. Hope to find a solution soon!

Hi! The question is about the graphics card drivers on my ThinkPad E530. nDivia's control panel tells me that I should update the driver version from 296.60 to 306.97. But I have heard that Lenovo has some special BIOS setup for these graphics card drivers.  So should I try to update those drivers or does the Lenovo System Update tell me when the next Lenovo's version of those drivers comes out?

Answer:nDivia GT 630M and ThinkPad E530

You should only use Lenovo's update if possible, as these drivers are tested to work with the thinkpad in question.

In a search of a decent "off-the-shelf" music production/DAW laptop solution I consider ThinkPad Edge E530 as a potential purchase (provided Lenovo fixes the fan noise issue). By reading this forum, I've acquired most of the info I need but various specs sheets I see around have left me confused so I'd like to confirm some facts. My questions are as follows: 1. I've read in here that ALL ThinkPad Edge E530 models come with a PCI Express mini Card / WWAN slot which would allow a mSSD to be installed. This is a crucial feature for me as I plan to buy a mSSD and install Windows 7 Pro there (I don't care about the caching feature) so I want to be perfectly sure all / the models I am looking at do come with a mSata slot indeed. In particular, I am looking at the NZQM9UK and N4F29UK models and I see no mSata slot reported in specs (unless I am missing something ofcourse). Specs can be found here:NZQM9UK and N4F29UK Btw, any idea what could explain the price difference between the two? 2. Likewise, different spec sheets mention different RAM upgradability. The NZQM9UK version I am linking for example shows maxium ram supported being 8 GB. Along with the mSSD, another big factor for choosing this laptop is the ability to upgrade it up to 16 GB of RAM so I can't afford getting stuck with a model that can only support 8 GB. I honestly don't want to doubt people who've said that *it should* have an mSata slot/go up to 16 but when it comes to spending so much money I w... Read more

Answer:Some ThinkPad Edge E530 questions.

I don't know the answers to all of your questions but I do have a couple of comments.  First of all Thinkpads come from the business side of the computer world.  Not that they are not multipurpose computers but their specs tend to favor business like use.  I just purchased a E530 and am happy with it but based on your intended use there may be other options.  Have you considered asking on music production sites what kind of laptop people are using?  One of the great advantages of the Internet is getting feedback from like-minded end users. Even though the E530 has Dolby the sound end of things seems to be weak.  You must use a 4 conductor phone/mic combo since there is no dedicated mic input.  The built-in speakers work fine but don't expect THX! I believe all E530's have the PCI Express Card mini slot.  It is designed for a 16GB mSATA ssd or a WWAN card. I have read of others putting larger ssd's inorder to install the OS but I would caution you that the slot has electrical specs and may not support the current required for a larger ssd over time.  An ssd is just a memory stick and produces heat and requires current so even if it works battery life is likely to be reduced. Sorry I can't be of more help.  Good luck with your decision.

I have a Thinkpad Edge e530c.After updating to windows 8.1 my internal microphone is not working.I checked the drivers and they are up to date.I checked in device manager and its saying 'This device is working properly.' Anyone Plzz plzz help me!!

Answer:Thinkpad e530 internal mic NOT WORKING

Your problem is you have the latest driver. If you have the driver from about 2 weeks ago, it broke the mike. You need to go into your "drivers" folder and reinstall the original driver. Then it will work again.

Answer:Best SSD for Thinkpad Edge E530 and e531

Hi Osipr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding upgrading SSD in your E530 and E531 laptops.
As per psref E531 supports SSD in some models: Solid State Drive (SSD) / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high.

And following is the list of SSDs compatible with E531

04X0928  SSD            128G Samsung - Primary
04X0931  SSD            128G LiteOn - Secondary
04X4752  SSD            SATA 128G Samsung
04X4754  SSD            SATA 128G Lite-On

Source

And for E530 as per psref it only supports mSATA SSD in some models 16GB mSATA Solid State Drive (SSD), via PCIe Mini Card slot which is used for Cache for Lenovo Hard Disk Drive Performance Booster
Note ? Some model also come with SSD but that depends on location and for US only mSATA model is there.

And following is the list of mSATA drives compatible with E530

45N8331         mSATA 16GB SanDisk Cache
45N8375         mSATA 16GB Samsung Cache

I hope the above information helped you.

This might be a no-brainer for some folks, but I thought this should be documented somewhere searchable. I use an E530c for work, and noticed that I got audio noise/static/pops on my headphones even when the sound is muted. I found some forum posts for older models which seem to blame the motherboard/general design.  It looks like for this model, the fix is a lot simpler. Don't use the USB port immediately next to the audio jack. As soon as I unplugged my optical mouse from that jack, the noise disappeared. It seems like some other USB devices do not cause the noise - just the optical mouse.

The startup screen came up, it quickly went black, again the startup screen came up, again it quickly went black, and it continued to repeat unstoppably. So I truned it off. Ok, let me start by saying that this was my first lenovo purchase, and so far it has been tough to swallow.  I purchased it in Nov 2012, and have had seemingly one problem after another. Since purchasing it, there has always been a SUPER long lag when waking up from hibernating or sleep.  But I dealt with it and tried to be patient.  Then within a couple weeks, I started getting random shutdowns with Windows error messages.I called tech support several times in a couple months, and they did all the initial helpdesk stuff like checking bios config and updating stuff.A couple weeks later, and the same issues.  I eventually RMA'd it back for repair, and after a week it was sent back with a message that windows was reinstalled. (i coulda did that at home)Since I got it back, it hasnt shutdown on me yet....but waking up from sleep or hibernation is ridiculously long.  Everything seems delayed, even the microsoft audio tone takes a few minutes.  I cannot use the laptop until it finishes waking up, which can take 2-3 mins sometimes. Its really irritating, and for someone that uses it regularly for work and close the lid 20 times a day......i am THIS close to just selling it on CL and trying to recoup some of my money and purchase the brand I am used too. This is my last resort.....so feel free to blurt out some suggestions

Answer:New Lenovo Thinkpad E530 startup issues

Hi, getatjbrown

I would make sure that Hybrid sleep is turned off. According to this Microsoft forum thread, Hybrid sleep can be enabled by default, and this can make the processes of the machine going to sleep and waking up be extremely long. You can ensure that this is disabled by following this path: Control Panel ? Power Options ? Change plan settings ? Change advanced power settings ? Sleep ? Allow Hybrid Sleep.

Let me know if that helps,
Adam

Hi all, I have read through all the similar messages I found on this forum but could not find a solution for my problem. I have a E530 thinkpad laptop and earlier today it simply stopped. I tried to reboot it, I can hear the noise of the power starting, the screen goes from completely black to a lgihted black color (almost dark blue) but nothing appears, no Lenovo or Thinkpad logo or else, just a blank dark screen.  I already tried to:- Unplugged battery and AC cable for a few minutes, then replug the adapter cable and try again - no luck- I tried to hold down the power button for 20 seconds with the laptop fully unplugged and try again - no luck- Keep F8 pressed when booting up - no luck- press F1 when booting up  - no luck (I guess it cannot go to the BIOS menu because it doesn't even get to the logo screen...) Is there anything else I can try? If I get at least to the BIOS or some sort of recovery screen I can take it from there. I don't mind about losing data, I have backups. Any help will be much appreciated, thank you!

Reviews say the touchpad on the E530 is crap when, for the price, the rest of the computer isn't bad at all. Is it possible to somehow swap out the E530s touchpad to one not as jittery etc?

Thanks

Answer:Upgrading the touchpad on a Thinkpad Edge E530

You'd have to find one that would fit, and that's even assuming you can change the actual touchpad without having to change the whole top part of the chassis (most you do because the touchpad is embedded pretty good in the top/front plastic bezel of laptops).

I'd almost assume that it could just be an outdated driver - if you get the right driver, then most touchpad issues go away (unless the touchpad really is that bad). If it's a Synaptics touchpad, you can get them here: Drivers | Synaptics

After using Windows 7 on my E530 for the last 6 months, I finally plucked up the courage and moved back to Windows 8 but none of my USB 3 ports work as they did in Windows 7.  My external HD was getting 130MB/sec read/write under 7 but only get around 30MB/sec under 8. I know there was a BIOS limitation which supposedly was addressed in the latest update but it's performing exactly the same.  When is this going to be addressed fully?

So I recieved my Edge 530 a few weeks back and the machine is absolutely wonderful, however for som reason it's USB 3.0 ports only give me a speed of 4-5MB/s while transferring. I was getting around 20 mb/s on a usb thumb drive when i was transferring some files over to the E530, which is about the same speed i got on the other usb 3.0 equipped devices. Is there any unknown devices in the device manager?
