Thinkpad Edge E530 + Ultrabay extra hard drive = 10minute freeze on reboot...?

Question: Thinkpad Edge E530 + Ultrabay extra hard drive = 10minute freeze on reboot...?

I just bought an ultrabay caddy for my Thinkpad Edge E530 (3632QM i7 quad core). The ultrabay first did not fit inside but I removed some plastic juts from it with a knife and drill . Now it fits in the slot, and the hard drive does seem to work when the machine is on. The only problem is that when you try to shut down the computer or reboot, it "thinks" for about 10 minutes before it actually shuts down the computer or reboots. I tried many things, I installed OS from scratch and it still does it. Immediately when I disconnect the ultrabay and put the machine on again the problem disappears. I tried changing various settings from BIOS but it does not help. I disabled rapidstart and removed the 16GB SSD, no change. OS is Win7-64bit. Any idea what could be causing this...? I think the most logical quess would be that something assumes that there is still an optical drive inside the computer even that there isn't and this causes the delay. Although I really don't understand how this could be as SATA is standard bus and you should be able to connect anything into it. By the way the Ultrabay i bought is made by Leicke:http://www.amazon.co.uk/LEICKE-Ultrabay-Enhanced-Adapter-Thinkpad/dp/B007II8O32/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&q... BIOS version is the latest (was it 2.08 or something...?)

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Edge E530 + Ultrabay extra hard drive = 10minute freeze on reboot...?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Edge E530 + Ultrabay extra hard drive = 10minute freeze on reboot...?

OK, so I examined the issue more and it seems to be about power management. When I disable Intel Speedstep and the setting below it (CPU Power Management was it...?), this problem disappears. I also noticed that the same delay is when I try to get the computer to sleep. Of course it is not really good idea to use a laptop without these settings being on so another solution must be found. I guess there must be BIOS support for a hard drive in the DVD-bay in order for it to work with power management enabled. The question is that 1. should there be such a support...? 2. if there isn't will there be with a BIOS update...? Btw.. I tested with 2 hard drives with both the same issue. If it becomes clear that there is no way to get a hard drive to work in DVD-bay with power management on, can you make such configuration that you buy 256GB msata SSD, install OS into it, and have a hard drive in the normal HD-bay...? Or would the machine go crazy when it tries to search for a non-existing rapidstart partition from msata...?

Can anybody recommend where you could buy a cheap (and quality) hard drive caddy for Thinkpad Edge E530...? All I can get from my local store is a harddrive caddy designed for T-series and it costs 100eur, far over my budget. I could order from UK or Germany internet shop if somebody just confirms me a working model with url or something ...

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 hard drive caddy cheap in Europe...?

I did find one that costs 35eur with postage. But it is meant for T-series I suppose: http://www.ok1.de/Ultrabay-III-HDD-SLIM-SATA-Adapter--611.html?XTCsid=295d06ol2ukqh930o1bmqd3q04  1. Does a caddy meant for T420, T520, T430, T530 etc... work in Edge E530...? And does it fit well enough so that you dont get any too big gaps near the outer layer of casing...? 2. Can you still get this product cheaper from somewhere...?

Hi. I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (i7-3632qm I think it was) from September 2012. I installed hard drive caddy/bay in place of the DVD-ROM drive 1-2 years ago. I have lately noticed that the harddrive turns off very often. I has done this before, maybe from day one but I always thought that it is mean to do that (power saving). Now that for the first time I use the harddrive actively (with Sample Libraries when doing music) I started to notice that it really is a problem. There are constant delays when the harddrive has turned off while I do something and when I load the next sample it first needs to turn back on. I suspect (I hope I am wrong) that it is a BIOS hardcoded feature as BIOS maybe thinks that there is a DVD-drive connected, which would be the normal use case. The caddy which I am using was meant for Thinkpad T-series, but I removed a part from the edge so it went nicely inside E530. I also had to disconnect one pin (by cutting the soldering) from the caddy, because otherwise the machine would not even boot (I think it was boot loop, BSOD or something, I dont remember. I am on Win7. I did a clean install and installed only the most neccessary drivers (no lenovo bloatware). When the harddrive is in use it works fine. E.g. I just transferred 23GB file from my other computer via LAN and during writing this file the hard drive does not power off. It seems to do this only when it thinks it is not needed.  I have set from Win7 power optio... Read more

Question: Thinkpad EDGE E530

Hi everyone,I Just got this edge e530 about 2 weeks ago, and i noticed my power jack LED stays solid green no matter if its charging or full. Any idea's guys i cant afford to wreck this battery and i need it for UNI next year is this a common issue?ThanksAnthony

Answer:Thinkpad EDGE E530

Hi thedatazoo, Don't worry, this only indicates there's power pass through your machine. The light will keep on even when you remove battery. And your battery will stop charging when it reach full charge (charge level can be customised in Power Manager). And you can always monitor your battery's condition in power manager. Hope this helpsFred

Welcome to the community!

I believe that the only laptops in Lenovo's multiple product lines that have multi-touch displays (pen + finger) are the tablet PCs, like the X230T and some of the IdeaPads. If I'm mistaken, I'm sure a Lenovo expert will be along shortly to correct me, but at this point I'd say you don't have 'touch' capability on your Edge.

In a search of a decent "off-the-shelf" music production/DAW laptop solution I consider ThinkPad Edge E530 as a potential purchase (provided Lenovo fixes the fan noise issue). By reading this forum, I've acquired most of the info I need but various specs sheets I see around have left me confused so I'd like to confirm some facts. My questions are as follows: 1. I've read in here that ALL ThinkPad Edge E530 models come with a PCI Express mini Card / WWAN slot which would allow a mSSD to be installed. This is a crucial feature for me as I plan to buy a mSSD and install Windows 7 Pro there (I don't care about the caching feature) so I want to be perfectly sure all / the models I am looking at do come with a mSata slot indeed. In particular, I am looking at the NZQM9UK and N4F29UK models and I see no mSata slot reported in specs (unless I am missing something ofcourse). Specs can be found here:NZQM9UK and N4F29UK Btw, any idea what could explain the price difference between the two? 2. Likewise, different spec sheets mention different RAM upgradability. The NZQM9UK version I am linking for example shows maxium ram supported being 8 GB. Along with the mSSD, another big factor for choosing this laptop is the ability to upgrade it up to 16 GB of RAM so I can't afford getting stuck with a model that can only support 8 GB. I honestly don't want to doubt people who've said that *it should* have an mSata slot/go up to 16 but when it comes to spending so much money I w... Read more

Answer:Some ThinkPad Edge E530 questions.

I don't know the answers to all of your questions but I do have a couple of comments.  First of all Thinkpads come from the business side of the computer world.  Not that they are not multipurpose computers but their specs tend to favor business like use.  I just purchased a E530 and am happy with it but based on your intended use there may be other options.  Have you considered asking on music production sites what kind of laptop people are using?  One of the great advantages of the Internet is getting feedback from like-minded end users. Even though the E530 has Dolby the sound end of things seems to be weak.  You must use a 4 conductor phone/mic combo since there is no dedicated mic input.  The built-in speakers work fine but don't expect THX! I believe all E530's have the PCI Express Card mini slot.  It is designed for a 16GB mSATA ssd or a WWAN card. I have read of others putting larger ssd's inorder to install the OS but I would caution you that the slot has electrical specs and may not support the current required for a larger ssd over time.  An ssd is just a memory stick and produces heat and requires current so even if it works battery life is likely to be reduced. Sorry I can't be of more help.  Good luck with your decision.

I was looking into buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. I initially preferred E530 (model# 62724GU) over the idepads (such as model P500) with better configurations for over a hundred and fifty dollars less only because it had thinkpad in its name.  However, I am seeing so many complaints (such as fan issues, battery drain) for E530, I am not sure if bought one it would not have defects. Has anyone got a defect free E530? What is the average battery drain time on both E530 and P500 on moderate to heavy load?

I have updated my (originally Windows 7 equipped) Thinkpad E530 to the latest BIOS version 2.55. I have also installed Windows 8.1 x64 on it.My question is: should I use the 'OS Optimized Defaults' in the BIOS or not?In the BIOS install descriptions, it says to use the OS Optimized Defaults on a Windows 8 (x64) pre-installed machine, and to use the regular defaults on a Windows 7 pre-installed machine. But my computer was a 7 pre-installed machine, but is now running Windows 8 x64. So which defaults do I need to load?Kind Regards,Psycho

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 BIOS

Hi,

As per your query on BIOS setting, I suggest you to enable the 'OS Optimized Defaults' option only when you want to install Windows 8 64bit Operating System.

If you are installing Windows 7 Operating System then 'OS Optimized Defaults' option is not required for that.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Answer:Best SSD for Thinkpad Edge E530 and e531

Hi Osipr,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding upgrading SSD in your E530 and E531 laptops.
As per psref E531 supports SSD in some models: Solid State Drive (SSD) / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high.

And following is the list of SSDs compatible with E531

04X0928  SSD            128G Samsung - Primary
04X0931  SSD            128G LiteOn - Secondary
04X4752  SSD            SATA 128G Samsung
04X4754  SSD            SATA 128G Lite-On

Source

And for E530 as per psref it only supports mSATA SSD in some models 16GB mSATA Solid State Drive (SSD), via PCIe Mini Card slot which is used for Cache for Lenovo Hard Disk Drive Performance Booster
Note ? Some model also come with SSD but that depends on location and for US only mSATA model is there.

And following is the list of mSATA drives compatible with E530

45N8331         mSATA 16GB SanDisk Cache
45N8375         mSATA 16GB Samsung Cache

Source

I hope the above information helped you.

Answer:Which SSD does the ThinkPad Edge E530 N4F6LMN use?

Perhaps there is something special for that model but I believe most (all?) E530 use the 16GB mSATA ssd available from Lenovo. It's about $40.  It's designed to be used for caching not secondary storage.  If you get it, you can download the proper ExpressCache SW and use the product code in the front of the ssd manual to install it. My concern about using a larger drive in that slot (miniPCI) is if there is sufficient amperage. You can also obtain a third-party HDD caddy to replace the optical drive for additional secondary storage. Of course, I'm assuming that either of these 'upgrades' might void your warranty.

I didn't realise this until COD: Ghosts started crashing and I tried to open the Nvidia control panel - nope, "An NVIDIA graphics card was not detected in your system". Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 broken.

Hi Yiri,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that you are getting an error message stating ?An NVIDIA graphics card was not detected in your system? in your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530.

Make sure NVIDIA GPU is not disabled in BIOS. If you set it to optimus, then only you can get the switchable option for switching between on board graphics and NVDIA.

Restart your system and get in to safe mode. Go to device manager and uninstall the NVIDIA drivers. Run NVIDIA Smart Scan which will auto-detect the latest version of driver compatible for your system and install it.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hey Guys! I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520. Im quite sure it supports Ultrabay, because I can remove one screw and pull out the DVD-drive while system is running without any problems  My question is: There are 2 different hard drive adapters available (at least here in germany), which one is the right for my model? There is one saying "the newer one" with 12.7mm and a special thing for holding the harddrive save in place:click here And the other one, named with "for older models" with 9.5mm and not this special holding-stuffclick here I don't know which one is right, but from measuring the dimensions of my DVD-Drive, I guess I need the bigger one (which would be the first)Any help? thanks

"DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable, tray-in
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,
removable, upgradable"

Hey there rosscomclan,

With Windows 8 you will have to go in and create the recovery media generally making a DVD or USB Drivel; however, this can only be done once logging in and getting to the metro screen or desktop to my knowledge.

In this instance, because Recovery Media is not prepared, you will need to contact Lenovo Support and have them send you Recovery Media DVDs. For the UK the support center number is 08705-500-900.

Hi my name is Jordan and im from the UKI am considering purchasing the thinkpad edge e530 with "Intel Core i3 2328M" installed and would like to know if it would be possible to install a Core i7 at a later date as I have a tight budget at the moment, and if so which one would be compatible. thanks in advance Jordan

Answer:Installing Core i7 in Thinkpad Edge E530 with i3

Good day and welcome to the community.

Looking at pages 82 and 83 of your Hardware Maintenance Manual, the CPU is removable (vs soldered), so that's good. Further looking at pages 2 and 3 your FRU parts listing, there are a number of core iX CPUs that are noted, including several of the i7 variety. Which one you could use may be dependent on which system board you have.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Reviews say the touchpad on the E530 is crap when, for the price, the rest of the computer isn't bad at all. Is it possible to somehow swap out the E530s touchpad to one not as jittery etc?

Thanks

Answer:Upgrading the touchpad on a Thinkpad Edge E530

You'd have to find one that would fit, and that's even assuming you can change the actual touchpad without having to change the whole top part of the chassis (most you do because the touchpad is embedded pretty good in the top/front plastic bezel of laptops).

I'd almost assume that it could just be an outdated driver - if you get the right driver, then most touchpad issues go away (unless the touchpad really is that bad). If it's a Synaptics touchpad, you can get them here: Drivers | Synaptics

Hi, Yesterday, I installed BIOS Update Utility (h0uj05ww.exe) version 1.18 on my Thinkpad Edge E530. After the installation, my battery is stuck at 98%. The status shows plugged in, not charging.I uninstalled and reinstalled Power Manager version 6.36 and Lenovo Power Management Driver version 1.65.05.21. But, it didn't help. (FYI, I have customized the settings to start charging at 90% and stop charging at 100%) I also tried removing and reinserting the battery and reconnecting the power source. But, it didn't help either. Any idea ? Please help. Thanks in advance. Regards,Umang.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 - Battery stuck at 98%

Hi Umang,

Welcome to the community.

As per your concern battery is not charging properly it shows shows plugged in.

If your battery has much lesser capacity or does not charge at certain level any longer, you may want to perform a gauge reset on the battery.
Double-click the green "Power Manager" battery icon near the Windows' system clock, usually at the lower-right corner of the screen. If you cannot find this icon, click "Start," "All Programs," "Access IBM" and "Power Manager."Click the "Battery Information" tab at the top.Click "Battery Maintenance."Click "Perform Reset," and then click "Continue" on the confirmation dialog box. This procedure will take more time to complete, and you should not use your ThinkPad during that time. You will be prompted when the battery reset is complete.

Make sure AC adapter plug in when performing gauge reset, do not close system.

Regards,
Sameer

Hey what do you think, would it be possible to somehow form a RAID SSD system inside Thinkpad Edge E530? Same type as Acer Aspire S7 which is famous of its high performance. So probably it would be raid 0. For example you put 256GB mSata SSD and 256GB 2.5" SSD and form a raid 0 of them. I guess the best would be to have the same SSDs (e.g. Samsung PM830 in mSata and Samsung 8300 in 2.5", which I hope are very similar). Maybe the big problem would be to buy a good mSata drive because retailers dont have them...?   Do you have any idea how it is implemented in Acer Aspire S7 (or S5). Is it a hardware RAID so that OS sees it as a single disk or a software raid (combined inside OS) ...?    If RAID is not possible do you think you would achive high performance just by MSata SSD (e.g. 128GB Samsung), where you would install OS, and then have the 2.5" slot for 1TB hard drive, and in addition optical drive...?

Answer:mSata + 2.5" together in RAID (thinkpad edge e530)...?

E530 doesn't support RAID. mSATA slot on the E530 is a SATAII connection, while the main hdd bay and optical drive bay is SATAIII. If you don't need the optical drive, then you can remove it and install a hdd drive caddy in it.

So I recieved my Edge 530 a few weeks back and the machine is absolutely wonderful, however for som reason it's USB 3.0 ports only give me a speed of 4-5MB/s while transferring. The same USB gives me about 25 on my desktop. I have tried the driver from the Support Section, but that has not affected anything. Also, the USB 2.0 gives the same speed.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 USB transfer speed.

hum that is pretty slow.... you should get around the same speed as the desktop. I was getting around 20 mb/s on a usb thumb drive when i was transferring some files over to the E530, which is about the same speed i got on the other usb 3.0 equipped devices. Is there any unknown devices in the device manager?

To those in the forum I recently damaged my thinkpad edge laptop 15" after not long ago having to reload every program and everything onto it, it takes me sometimes a week to get things back to normal. It's damaged irrepairably but the hard drive is Ok. I've now bought a thinkpad G570. Can I simply replace the hard drive int he G570, with the pre-loaded harddrive from the THinkpad, and will it just load up and work? The solution that has been offered to me so far ist to buy the sata -usb cable, and attach the old hard drive to the new g570 and go through the one key recovery and transfer the whole system that way. Any ideas would be great. I'd prefer just to swap the new hard drive for the old.

Answer:Replacing Ideapad Hard Drive with Pre-loaded Thinkpad Edge hard drive

Hi, RichardBarclay

Provided the hard drives are the same size and use the same connection, there is no reason that the new computer shouldn't recognize it. And provided the new hard drive is simply removed and not touched until you're sure the old hard drive works, then there shouldn't be any danger in trying. If, for some reason, the old hard drive doesn't work in the new computer, then I would recommend getting a SATA-USB cable to simply transfer the files. And you may want to do that anyway as it is, in my opinion, a useful device to have in case you ever want to transfer data between drives again.

Best of luck,
Adam

Okay so a couple days ago I posted about having an issue with my clickpad being stuck... that's still an issue... but a more pressing issue has arisen. I have found that if i put really any pressure at all on the palm rest or click pad, the computer freezes and/or reboots. I am an online student with carpal tunnel so this is a big problem. I'm going to try to take the computer apart tomorrow and see what it looks like under the palm rest... anyone got any ideas about what I should look for?

Hi! So I have these strange problems with my E530. Everytime when I turn on the computer after longer brake (2-3 days) it starts normally but when it gets to home screen Bluescreen pops up. I haven't yet copied the error code but when this happens next time I will copy it and add it here. Also the booting time is way longer than when I bought this computer. It takes now 2-3 minutes. When the computer was new it take under a minute. Is this normal? The computer is now 9 months old. Then there is also this problem. When the computer is in normal use the screen sometimes freezes for like 10-15 sec. Mouse doesn't move, music freezes and everything that is running freezes. Then suddenly everything goes back to normal. Music starts to play from the place where the track was before the freezing happened. All of these problems have happened now for like 1 moth. If somebody have the same problem or somebody knows that what could be wrong or broke please help. - _JK_

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E530 strange behavior (with Win7)

Hi guys! I have some strange behavior with my E530 too. After I carry my laptop (not at home but longer ways outside), I turn it on, the welcome screen apperas but after that just black screen with the pointer. It seems that tha machine is working, loads the programs, because the pointer rotates but the desktop does not appear. When it do that, I put tha laptop to sleeping mode with closing it and when I open, the desktop appears too but the laptop is slow. For example Avast or Comodo Firewall load quite slow. I have mSATA SSD so this is not normal. A complete restart solves the problem, after that everything is OK.So...why does it do that after carrying?

Hi. I want buy Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (NZQKNRT). Can you help me choose additional ssd for him? May be anyone have list of compatible 64Gb ssd? If it's not, how to understand what ssd compatible with Thinkpad Edge E530 (NZQKNRT). In my country in web shop i find such ssd: 1.Kingston SSDNow MS100 64GB mSATA MLC (SMS100S2/64G)  2.Crucial M4 64GB mSATA MLC (CT064M4SSD3) 3.Transcend 64GB mSATA MLC (TS64GMSA310)   What ssd from this list compatible? And one more question:  What is the maximum amount of SDRAM supported? 8Gb or 16Gb? SODIMM DDR3-1600 ? Maybe anyone have list of compatible ? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (NZQKNRT) and additional SSD

1) any of the 7 or 9.5 mm 2.5 inch SATA SSD is compatible with your machine.

2) mSATA drive is the same, the ThinkPad Edge E530 are compatible with most of the available drive on the market (but i would avoid the OCZ Nocti variants). 3) 16 gigs of 1600 mhz DDR3 SODIMM is the max.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Edge E530 (3259) that's just out of warranty and my battery is not lasting long enough anymore. I purchased a 3rd party battery and the battery works (the laptop stays on when the a/c power is unplugged), but it doesn't charge.  When I reboot my laptop, I get a BIOS error message (well before Windows loads) that a 3rd party battery has been detected and the battery may not charge.  I have to hit ESC to continue. Is Lenovo really restricting me from using a 3rd party battery?  If so, I think that's a terrible thing to do to its users. Is there any way around this?  I've removed the power mananger software, but that didn't help.   I wouldn't think it would have helped since it's a BIOS arror message that I'm getting. Perhaps there's an older BIOS I can flash that doesn't have this protection? What exactly is this block looking for?  If I get a 3rd party battery with the exact same voltage and MAH, will that work?  I think this one has a slightly higher MAH rating.  But, I don't want to order something else and spend more money if Lenovo has some other way to determine it's genuine? The battery provider sent me a whole big lenovo checklist of things to try to get the battery to charge, but none of them worked. Any other ideas? I'm definitely not happy here.  Hopefully someone can assist. Thanks in advance!

I checked external monitor and the line doesn't show. so it must be problem with lcd. has anyone got this problem before and can someone advise me what should i do about it.

Answer:Thinkpad edge e530 screen has vertical line

Does squeezing the LCD bezel above or below the line cause the line to change? If so, it's possibly a damaged LCD panel. Otherwise it's possibly a bad cable.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E530 , Camera not working / not found

Hi, LaithAlwash

I would make sure that the integrated camera has been enabled in the BIOS. To do this, turn on the computer and tap the Enter key a few times at the POST screen (screen with "lenovo" in big, white text)  to interrupt normal startup. If done properly, this should open up a menu. One of the options on this menu should be Press F1 to enter BIOS setup. Press F1 and you should enter the BIOS. From here, navigate to Security ? I/O Port Access. Make sure that the integrated camera is set to Enabled. If it was set to Disabled, then this explains the behavior you've been experiencing as of late and may fix the issues.

Let me know how it goes,
Adam

Hi all,    I am facing random power failure or shutdown problem with my edge e530. First it started with random hibernation of laptop when moved. I searched and found it was power button problem which was set to hibernate in power settings. I changed it to screen off and also tried to fix the power button board wire but it still switched off the screen when laptop was moved. Now recetly my laptop started to randomly shut down and sometimes restart even when U am not moving the laptop. In event manager I your pc suddenly lost power event. I have checked with battery and it occurs without battery . i also checked if it was charger problem but it occurs even when charger disconnected. So can anyone tell me what could be the cause. Is it the faulty power button board or something else.  Regards

Hello A few days ago I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 3259A4G. Yesterday I did a new install of Windows 7 Pro 64bits.Unfortunately my computer won't recognize the Nvidia GeForce 630M graphics card anymore. I ran multiple Nvidia drivers (285.80, 301.42 and the 304.48) suitable for this graphics card but they all say the same: this grapics driver could not find compatible hardware. Also the driver that Lenovo has on it's support page won't install. How can I fix this? I don't have this problem with the Intel HD4000. EDIT: Already figured out the problem myself. There's this guy on YouTube who helped me out and a bunch of other people facing the same problem, so just listen and try fixing it yourself, it's not that hard. Still don't know if it's a Lenovo or a Nvidia problem, but I don't care anymore.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 Nvidia graphics

Hi, I already posted a solution for this in the post "E530 GT630 driver", you can install all the latest nvidia drivers by using the laptop2go .INF files. It's because the BIOS of our 630M GPU is a Lenovo one, not generic. BR

I bought Thinkpad Edge E530. One of the most annoying problems currently is that the touchpad seems to be a bit loose. When you put your finger on it, it moves down maybe like 0.1-0.4mm. Very little movement but still enough to be annoying. And you also hear a dim click sound when you put your finger to it when the touchpad "hits" the surface below it. I guess this would be easy to fix by putting something between the touchpad and the surface below it (a layer of cloth for example), that would prevent it from moving. But is this possible at all?   Or is this enough reason for to use the onsite warranty to get a new touchpad, or would the new one most likely have the same problem...? I read from one review that they noticed this same thing too, so unless it is a "property", there must be large batch of laptops affected.

Answer:loose touchpad (moving, Thinkpad Edge E530)

Do you know you can actually click the touchpad like it's a mouse button?

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E530 NZQA2GE - i5-3210 partitions

Hi, mixer

Are you trying to make partitions on both drives, or just the HDD? Since the SSD is only 16 GB, I don't think you'd be able to fit both OSes on it. Also, is there currently an operating system on the machine?

Thanks in advance,

When I first got my Thinkpad Edge (refurbished) about a month ago, I had some pretty major problems with the mousepad and trackpoint. I reinstalled the drivers to fix the problem, but they keep consistently screwing up. The biggest issue is that the two-finger scroll will just cease to work. When I go into control panel, and select "change mouse settings" a popup comes up that says "unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver" but then it allows me to continue anyway. Sometimes if I mess with the settings, it will fix the problem (temporarily) but sometimes it just completely stops working and I have to, once again, reinstall the drivers. Anyone else have similar problems? Any suggestions?

So I got the E530. I7 and win 8. But, if I am using the Normal "lenovo" install of the Win 8, it takes way to long to boot up, and be ready for use. And just when I am done booting up, I can see, that already 28% of memory is used up. Just for "clean" windows. We are talking 5 min, from I press the power button, ontil I can open Internet explore/chrome. (and even then, it have to think for 10 sek, to open it up. When I did a clean install of Window 8 (from clean MS disk I got for for my Desktop PC) It still takes around 5 min, before windows is loaded. But now I am down to around 15-18% of memory use.  When I am installing program, and starting things up, it takes WAY to long. I have a laptop from HP, that is 6y old now, and is WAY faster at booting up windows 8, and other programs. Overall, for a laptop in this price range, I think its the worse laptop you can ever buy. It is something I would expect from a cheap end laptop, with Intel i3 with 500mb ram. (witch I think will be as fast as this one) Any ideas what can be the problem.   I tried to use lenovo scanning tools, but they all came out clean with no problems found.

Hello, I'm planning on buying E530 3259-C2G and would like to change the 750 Gb HDD to a SSD drive. Is the sata port that the HDD is attached a SATA 2.0 (3Gb/s) or SATA 3.0 (6 Gb/s).

Answer:Lenovon ThinkPad Edge E530 3259-C2G SATA port

Hello pth1,

The E530 you have listed has a SATA 2.0 port.
http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/edgebook.pdf
You can go to this link and find your model on the left side bar.  It will be closer to the bottom.  Next to where it says SATA disk, it will say this:
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,

I hope this helps,

Alex

Hi,
We deployed 10 Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (M/N   MP1ZPZA) laptops for a new customer installation.
All systems are running Windows 7 64-bit Professional
The laptops are connected wireless in a Windows Server 2008R2 domain.
We have noticed some slow connectivity issues.
Multiple access points were tested but still had the same issue.
Whenever we ping a workstation the response time is over 800 milliseconds.
I updated the drivers using Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools and I didn?t get any improvement.  Because the wireless adapter is Intel, I installed the latest drivers provided by Intel but the result was the same.
I found that after running Intel WiDi application on any laptop the Ping response time for that workstation will temporarily decrease to less than 5ms (a normal timing range)
A couple of HP laptops were added to the domain for testing but did not experience the same issue with the ping response.
A case was opened with Lenovo technical support (Case#902B6YJ).
After talking with Lorenzo, Ray and Alfonso from Lenovo support the conclusion was that is an engeneering problem  and they suggested us to address the issue to this forum.
Has any else experienced this type of issue?

Hi there, I'm well aware that there are a few of these problems listed for last year but I've tried a lot of what is given as solutions to the problem and I have not yet discovered why mine isn't working.- My camera used to work fineI was using it all the time, every day last year to speak to someone via skype etc. Now that i'm with them I hadn't had any use for it.-It no longer is even recognised by the machine.Lenovo Settings doesn't list a camera options menu, the device manager doesn't even have 'Imaging Devices' listed whatsoever. Here is proof: http://imgur.com/NY0VS0T-What did I do?I possibly deleted something while I was doing a PC clean up of stuff I didn't use (my laptop was starting to run sluggish and some spring cleaning really boosted the speed). This might be my fault but i'm hoping I can un-break it. So my question is this...-What Drivers, Programs & Facilities do I need to download again to make the camera work?I thank everyone so much in advance for their help

Hi,I have a stripped screw on the large bottom cover caused by using the wrong screwdriver which was my fault. I am guessing warranty will not cover this issue, if not can anybody direct my to getting a new cover with screws in it, as the screws do not come out. Also if it makes a difference, I put in a repair request through the website, and they shipped me a box to send my laptop in, however since I am a student I NEED this laptop every day and cannot have it in repairs.

Answer:thinkpad edge e530 large bottom cover stripped screw

If you don't even use the right screwdriver, you shouldn't open up a laptop anyway. Why did you want to open it in the first place? Was something wrong with it? If you're not experiencing any problems with the laptop, and it doesn't need to be opened up for service or repair, don't worry about the screw.

Hello there. I've been trying to make the Realtek PCIE Card Reader on my E530 work, but it says that Win8 can't load the drivers (Code 31). I uninstalled, updated the drivers, restarted, but still, same thing. Also tried to keep with it's initial version of the driver (6.2.9200.29048), but no success. If anyone could help me on this issue, I'd be eternally grateful.

Hi, Posting this in case anyone is looking to replace their optical drive with a second HDD. I purchased HDD caddy for my Edge 14. On Ebay I bought one listed as: 12.7mm 2nd SATA Hard Drive HDD Caddy for Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430 E425 E420 (from seller excellent_accessory) and it's outside dimensions were exactly the same as my optical drive. I just told the seller the model number of my optical drive (by looking in device manager). The trim piece from my optical drive fit directly onto the caddy without much issue to give a clean look. Didn't have any trouble detecting the second drive in Windows, was pretty much plug and play.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14 second hard drive

Thanks for posting this, I too just ordered the caddy, got everything installed. It shows up in device manager, but nowhere on the computer, I cant see it. Any ideas?

I bought a new (refurbished) Thinkpad Edge e530 from Lenovo's online outlet store after my last laptop's cpu died. I NEED this computer for university, and it has been very difficult without one. I finally got it in the mail today, and after I had only used it for a couple hours, the touchpad stopped functioning correctly. Every time I touch the touchpad, a new window opens up. It is truly impossible to use the computer like this. So, I called Lenovo's customer service number, and allowed the customer service worker to operate my computer remotely. He said my computer downloaded some kind of malicious software, within me only using it for 1 1/2 hours, and that my drivers are all being destroyed. I only downloaded Google Chrome and Steam. He said it was my fault for connecting to an insecure network (my personal home network, which has a password and has never presented an issue to anyone's computer in the past), and that I will have to pay $300 for a ONE TIME fix in order to fix the problem. He kept telling me it was my fault for using an insecure network (it is not), and thus I have to pay the price. I can't afford that price and I think it's absurd that any company would expect me to pay that for a brand new laptop that I've only had for a couple hours. I have a warranty, but he told me that I wouldn't be able to return the laptop because it's a software issue. Once again, I've had the laptop for only a few hours. I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with custome... Read more

Answer:emergency! - Brand new Thinkpad Edge E530. Customer service was rude and not helpful

I would like to add that the issues with the touchpad started immediately upon starting to use the new laptop. At first, it was minor and I thought that it was a weird function of the computer or windows 8 that I hadn't gotten used to yet. But then I left for dinner and came back and the touchpad was completely impossible to use, and the trackpoint completely stopped working. So it appears that the computer already came with these problems. Also, a quick Google search shows that in the past Lenovo has shipped software bundles that contained malware with their computers. And that malware has been found to be infecting some Lenovo computers on the production line. Knowing this, I can't believe that customer service was blaming me for this and asking me to pay so much money to fix it. I really hope this can be resolved, because I've heard so many good things about Lenovo and I really want to like this company.

Hello I got this new laptop as a gift.  I wanted to upgrade the laptop with mSata 16gb SanDisk SSD to use it for caching purpose... I see I have an empty slot in WWAN slot that I could use the mSata...I called Lenovo and asked for that part (45N8331) so they transferred me to the Parts Dept.  I asked for that part -- the lady said it will cost $523.95 for that part...I fell over backwards!  I thought NO WAY!  It must be a mistake! I see hundreds of SSD for sale all over...none under 32gb costs that high!  I can understand 256Gb and larger would cost that much...  I only want a simple 16Gb SSD designed to work with ThinkPad Edge e530...  I pray that one of you know where to get that part for much lower price. If you, Lenovo, are reading this posting and see that it is an error in price...please let me know!! Many thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge e530 and purchase new Lenovo Part # 45N8331 - mSata 16gb SSD

The 64 gigs Samsung SATA that i got with the ThinkCentre M92z was a 280 dollars option when you purchase the desktop from Lenovo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lead_org/7782185634/It is expensive as an aftermarket part from Lenovo, because Lenovo don't really stock it and no one really buys it as a separate part from Lenovo. You are better off getting large one from different vendors.

I triied reinstalling the driver, but it is still not woriking. When I reinstall Windows 8.1 completely the HDMI-output is working again, so clearly it is something wrong with the latest driver.

Just purchased 44 E530 each with Intel Centrino N2230 Wireless card.  Windows 7 installed, laptops log into a Windows domain across (Aruba) wireless AP's.  Issue with speed but mainly ability to actually login via Wireless environment.  Scenario - group 30/31 students try to log in to domain using Wireless but only 6/7 will be able to connect.  Others sit at the 'Welcome' screen.  After 5/10 minutes we reboot the laptops that haven't logged in.  Of these a few may log in this time round (allbeit slowly).  Other students reboot again and gradually a few more will be able to log in.  Others will again just sit at 'welcome' screen.  On a good session all users MIGHT be able to log in but it could take over half an hour because of repeated reboots required.  The wireless driver has been updated but this made little or no difference.  I've also set a Windows Group Policy to 'wait on login' as it was thought the issue might be the Thinkpads needing to see the Wireless LAN before the user tried to log in to the Windows domain. If one of the laptops is tested with Ethernet connection then it works as expected, so it is definitely wireless related.  any advise from anyone?

Hi, having recently upgraded the stock hard drive to an SSD in my Edge 11 laptop, I've misplaced the carrier part that secures the drive to the laptop, preventing it from coming out when knocked or moved. Everything works apart from when the drive comes loose and the laptop then needs a re-boot, as well as removing the back plate to refit it. As you can imagine, this is a massive inconvenience, especially when I'm out.I've called Lenovo support but the rep i talked to didn't seem to know anything about a caddy to secure it, and said he could not help me as it is a third party hard drive. Does anyone on here have any idea where I can buy one, or even have one themselves to sell? Any help appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 11 Hard drive Caddy

joecarver, welcome to the forum,

the only easy way to get hold of the hdd caddy is to purchase a hard drive from Lenovo as an accessory or spare part for your system.

One of the sponsors of forum.thinkpads.com may offer them, (see advert at the top of the boards), but they are unfortunately in the USA. You may have some luck and someone here pops up with the unknown FRU number or has a broken system which they are parting out.

Good luck!

Hi, I am considering replacing my thinkpad edge hard drive with an SSD but i have a few questions first. Is it possible to replace the hard drive under the cover? it looks like the whole bottom is a cover ... is this true? Does removing the cover void warranty? Can I install W7 using any cd and the COA number or do i need a lenovo specific CD? Id like to avoid the lenovo software in the new install if possible. Thanks Clem

Answer:Replacing the Hard drive in a Thinkpad Edge 11

Yes, no problem. I've exchanged the default 320 Gb harddrive with a 640 Gb Seagate. You just unscrew the three screws on the bottom plate, and then you have access to the harddrive, which has a further two screws in the mounting device. I don't think that you'll void the garanty, because you also have to access under the plate if you want to use the 3G modem.I don't know which cd's you have to use, I just cloned my drive.

I've seen this topic for other models but not for the E420. I have about 60g left out of my 500G stock HDD and was wondering if I could replace the dvd drive with another hard drive. I'm not sure of the process to do this as I just heard that some laptops let you do the swap. What parts would I need?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 2nd Hard Drive Possible?

you can replace the dvd drive with a hdd caddy, but it is not a Lenovo oem part, this is an aftermarket part. There is a screw on the bottom of the laptop, which holds the optical drive in place, just unscrew that and remove the drive. you can google for the hdd caddy on ebay. You can also get a mSATA drive and put it in your E420.

Hello Lenovo community, Im completely floored as to why no one has even bothered to ask this question, even when i searched it on google.com.  Is it possible to have a second hard drive in a thinkpad edge 14 series by removing the optical DVD storage device with a HDD caddy?  If so what type of hard drive caddy would i need, and if you could please link to it. Much appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 2nd Hard drive Caddy

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The Slbook doesn't mention anything about SATA HDD Bay adapter, even the optical drive is not termed Ultrabay, I think it's suffice to say that such expandability option doesn't exists for Edge.

Hope this helps.

the 16 gigs mSATA will be used as a large cache for the regular HD, much like what Intel Turbo memory was, but it will have better algorithms applied to predict usage pattern.

ThinkPad Edge hard drive failed while still under warranty.  I took the machine to a local Lenovo warranty service provider for repairs--they've notified me that Lenovo says the serial number for the defective hard drive doesn't match their records and they will not authorize a replacement. This laptop was purchased from Lenovo Direct Sales (internet) and has never left my possession (or even been outside my home).  It was used lightly (primarily for personal emails--lest than 2-3 hours/week). I wouldn't know how to replace a hard drive, or even think of doing it myself.   The hard drive that's in the machine is what was shipped to me from Lenovo--if the part number doesn't match their records it's due to a problem with their record keeping.   The repair center is at a loss as to what to do next, as am I.  I think this is just another way for Lenovo to not honor their warranty.  Judging from the negative feedback I've read on the internet, this is rather common.

Ivy Bridge CPU in the E430 supports SATAIII (6 Gb/s) for the main hdd and optical drive bay. The height of the E430 hdd bay is suitable for 7 and 9.5 mm (not sure what that equates to in inches).

how do i get to my laptop [thinkpad edge 0302-45u] back to factory settings with a clean hard drive. including also the os windows 7 back to factory setings. i have minimal computer knowledge. i backed up everything i needed already on a usb storage device.

Answer:[thinkpad edge 0302-45u] back to factory settings with a clean hard drive. how?

You need the backup disks, unless you have a recovery partition.  You should have been prompted to make these when you first booted the computer. If the computer is under warranty, you can have Lenovo send you recovery disks.  If not they are some $50 or something like that.  If you are like me and think it is stupid to repay for something that is already yours, you can proabbyl find windows7 legitimate downlaods on the internet somewhere.  I have seen links for them before on sevenforums. But I never actually followed them,  You can then use your key on the sticker on your computer to reinstall.  Though this will not result in al the extra crap lenovo ships with their computers (though I think it is all crap anyways... including windows).

I'm planning on upgrading my existing 320Gb internal hard drive to a 1Tb Internal Hard Drive. Would a 1Tb Hard Drive with a SATAII Interface be the correct one to use. Can anyone suggest what is the easiest way of replacing this drive? Kind Regards, Simon Thwaites

Answer:Re: Upgrading Internal Hard Drive (Thinkpad Edge E520 Model Number 1143CTO)

just remove the bottom plate, and remove the hdd from the laptop (held down by two screws) to the laptop chassis. The hdd is in a caddy held down by 4 screws. As long as the hdd is 2.5 inch and 9.5 mm thick then you would be okay. The SATA interface is SATAIII (6.0 Gbps), which can operate at SATAI and SATAII mode, depending on the hdd you have.
