Thinkpad Edge motherboard failures

Question: Thinkpad Edge motherboard failures

In my workplace I have had 3 Edge laptops with faulty motherboards (2 x E520, 1 x Edge 13). The sympton for all was: not powering on. These all have motherboards replaced under warranty. Anyone else experience these problems?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Edge motherboard failures

Unfortunately, mine is not under warranty, but I fear that I may have the beginning of a motherboard issue. My laptop won't boot (even though I hear the hard drive start). It eventually starts once its warmed up a bit. Once I have the Edge running, it passes all diagnostic tests so I can't really be sure what the issue is.

My thinkpad Edge 13 has died for the second time.

The fist time it died after a month and the systemboard was replaced. Now running for a month after the systemboard replacement the system died again. After pressing the power button the system began to smoke from the air vent and died.

As you can imagine I'm very disgusted with this product by now and wouldn't recommend a Thinkpad Edge to anyone.

Good afternoon,

I would like to write a complaint, regarding my Lenovo laptop, which I have purchased approximately 1 year ago. I have chosen Lenovo as reliable computer company, but I was disappointed, as first taint occurred in one and a half month after purchase. Second was in the middle of the year, and third one was about 2-3 weeks ago. I used to buy another computer suddenly, as my job performance seriously depends on my computer. I am working in airlines as head of flight support division/first officer, so you can imagine how strong strike to me it was. Unfortunately, only 1 year warranty was on my Lenovo laptop(which was expired approx 1 month before it's last taint). Besides 2 first taints, third one was absolutely last, as motherboard has completely failed. I was advised by computer repair technician, that in order to fix my computer, I need to buy a new motherboard, which price is 1400LT (approximately 400EUR), when the price of my computer was approx 2300LT (year ago), now it's price much lower. It was more beneficial to buy a new computer, than to fix computer which age is 1 year and which had fails 3 times. I could no realize, what I could expect in month or 2 months after buying new motherboard. I think, that that computer was completely unreliable. Also I  think, maybe it was a defective batch of mine model? Maybe you have attained more complaints regarding that model and batch? Trusting to your company, it is completely unbelievable, that it ... Read more

Hi alaa_pcprof and welcome to the community,

About the only way I can advise to find a board is through an authorized service center.

Use the map.  At the top enter a country  and it will bring up a list of providers with addresses and phone numbers.
There's none in Iraq, there's some in Jordan, some in Lebanon and a lot in Saudi Arabia if you have any contacts there.

It's not going to be cheap.  On Ebay, in the US, a used board costs around 250.00US.

What happened to your board, anyway, that it died?

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

I have a Thinkpad Edge 13" (AMD Athlon Neo X2) and have encountered a number of problems that have come up over the last couple of weeks.  I've had the Edge for a year and half and it is no longer under warranty. Product Number:  01972AU #1 - Edge will not boot.  I hit the power button and I hear the hardrive start spinning but nothing shows up on the screen.  No Bios, No windows, nothing.  I have hooked up an external monitor with no luck.  The only way I have been able to get around this issue is to continually try to boot the machine (sometimes without the battery, with battery unplugged, etc.).  However, it appears that once the laptop is "warmed up" it boots.  It will then restart and shutdown and boot up without issue until I shut it down overnight. This issue appears to have come out of nowhere.  I've run and passed every hardware diagnostic test out there and nothing comes up.  But as soon as I leave the machine shut down for a while I have to go through the whole process again.  I've tried removing the RAM, unplugging the WAN, etc.  I'm afraid it may be a motherboard problem... #2 - Bottom of keyboard not working.  This one caused me a considerable headache since I believed that I had locked myself out of windows somehow since I didn't realize that I was typing in my password incorrectly.  Once I got back from the store with a cheap USB keyboard I could get back in.  I note... Answer:Thinkpad Edge 13 won't boot and keyboard failing. Motherboard?

So I've been able to open up a case with my credit card company (thankfully they double the warranty period on purchases).  Now I need to get an estimate for repairs.  Where should I take it?  Any ideas on how much I can expect to spend for a new motherboard and keyboard replacement? Thanks again!

Hi, I have ThinkPad Edge 15 0319-3TG that doesn't power up. The lights on it don't turn on at all. Power supply AC adaptor has been tested OK. Pressing and holding power button didn't help. Speaking to hardware support at work, he guessed motherboard could be busted. Looking online, these cost a small fortune! What is the best way troubleshooting this? How can I ensure it is indeed motherboard? I have keen eyes/steady hands, not too much experience with motherboards, so your help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 15 0319-3TG - No power? Motherboard change needed? Possible?..!

Hi, TonyKay

I looked up the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your machine and found some troubleshooting steps to this issue. Firstly, make sure all connections are good and tight. Secondly, it may be your RAM that needs replacing. Finally, it could be the motherboard. It is unlikely that both RAM sticks would have died at once, so I would guess that it is the motherboard as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I ve bought thinkpade edge 13 (0221RY6) and formated my hdd (was trying to install win XP). But now i am ready to switch on Windows seven and i am very sorry that i ve formated my HDD with pre installed windows 7.Somebody who has same machine PLS Can u give me your copy of recovery usb or link on it! Or any other help.THANKS!

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hello, I bought a Thinkpad Yoga X1, and received it today. It's a beautiful laptop, and I was really impressed with the workmanship and packaging. Great work... Unfortunately, as I started to use it, I noticed the click on the clickpad (not the buttons above) fails often (maybe 1 in 20-30 clicks which becomes very annoying very quickly). For a while, clicks at the very left corner of the clickpad weren't working at all. I'm wondering if there is any posisbility that this could be a software setting/driver issue before I send it back for replacement? I'm using the latest synaptics driver for the X1 Yoga. Anyone else having issues with the click on the click pad?

Answer:Thinkpad X1 Yoga Click Failures

Tried some things: If I click with my palm, nothing happens, which seems to be a clue. The trackpad sensivity is also depedent on my finger placement.   I usually rest my left thumb on the bottom left corner of the trackpad ready to click then use my index finger for the cursor (this is how I use my Macbook Pro without problem). If I remove the resting thumb, the cursor sensitvity improves. I'm just checking if others have had similar issues before I send it back, as I love the machine otherwise and hoping for a software fix.  UPDATE: It looks like the driver. I removed it and the left/right click work perfectly as does the cursor sensivity (even with multiple fingers). The only problem now is there is no two finger detection for scrolling so I can't scroll with the trackpad. Hope there is an update to the synaptics driver.

Hi all, I own a ThinkPad E520 that I purchased new in November of 2011. So far, I've had no issues with it and I am a real big fan of the design. I've been reading on the forums here that E520s manufactured around the time mine was have a faulty EEPROM chip which causes the motherboard to fail and makes the machine inoperable. Is there a way to know if my machine contains the faulty chip and is basically a ticking time bomb? Can I get the mobo replaced before failure if this is the case? Do I just have to wait and hope it fails within my warranty period and then send it in the Lenovo? This is a crummy situation as I love the E520 but reliability is key for me and a machine with a guaranteed imminent motherboard failure is just not good. Is there anything I can do?

Answer:E520 and motherboard failures

I purchased my e520 new in October 2011. It worked perfectly fine, ran great, and I loved the design.  In December 2012 I went to turn it on, but nothing happened.  I looked online to see if there were any fixes or reported issues with the machine I had and saw that a few people did a "static discharge" and the machine went back to normal.  Unfortunately, that was not the case with mycomputers.  I called Lenovo only to find out that since my computer stopped working ONE MONTH out of warranty, no one could help me.  In fact, they wanted to charge my credit card $600 before they would offer any kind of support. I took it to an approved lenovo repair place and the tech told me had seen several Lenovo ThinkPads in the e series with the same problem- a faulty motherboard.  It will cost over $500 for parts and labor.  I hope you are luckier than I was and your computer doesn't fail you out of warranty.  If you look, you will see that the Lenovo forum is replete with disussions about faulty system boards in various models and that Lenovo offers poor customer service.

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Answer:Numeric Keypad (on Fn+alpha keys) missing on Thinkpad X1 and Thinkpad Edge

As you are experiencing Fn+ alpha numeric keys are not working, I would suggest you to please update the Power Manager software and also update the Bios of your system from the below mentioned web link.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?

After this, please restart the system and check if the issue resolved.

Thanks & Regards,

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

I have a ThinkPad 431 with Windows 7 the BIOS  turned on for always on.I switched on the USB option always on in lenovo utility. Thinkpad has 3 USB ports, two on the left and one on the right. The one on the right works when the thinkpad is in hibernation. The left ones don't. When thinkpad is on, all ports charge. Is this by design or is there a problem with my Thinkpad unit. I really realy need two ports for charging.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 431 Powered USB charging at only one port when thinkpad is in hibernate

I should mention that I don't have any yellow USB port. Neither the left or the right ones have yellow.

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.

Hi Kody33,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query, we understood that you are facing an issue with HDD drive test on your ThinkPad L540.

Check with running chkdsk once and retest the HDD, if the issue still persists then it would be better to take all the personal data backed up and replace the drive.

To perform with Chkdsk, go to start and type cmd and open with administrator, now type chkdsk and press enter.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I had another post going about my problems with Windows 10 upgrade suddenly disabling my Wifi. I ran out of solutions and decided to just erase the computer and go back to Windows 7 with the Recovery Media. I ordered the Recovery Media from Lenovo support. They sent the DVDs a week ago. It was part #00HP879. The labels on the DVDs all say they are for the T430, T530, W530 and a bunch of machine types, none of which are mine. I started out hopeful anyway since the tech support agent had assured me this is the correct media. I followed the instructions - changed the BIOS to load from the CD.Inserted Applications and Driver Disc 1 of 2 and booted up the Recovery program.I answered the questions, accepted the license agreement, etc.The programs then says to insert Operating System Recovery Disc 1 - I do that, Click OK.The programs then asks for Operating System Recovery Disc 2 - again, inserted, clicked OK.The program then asks for Applications and Drivers Disc 1 again. I insert that, off it goes. Then it asks for Applications and Drivers Disc 2 - like the others, I insert it. I keep getting an error message that it's the wrong DVD, try again. I try each of the 4 DVDs, thinking maybe there is some dialog box error. Nothing works. Called support again. The man I spoke to says there have been some cases where the DVDs are corrupt so try another one. They send that out. Same EXACT problem. Exact everything as before. Call back - this time they give me a number to try t... Read more

I have reported it and it never got fixed. Here is how I got around it. I create iso image files of the 2 applications/drivers disks and used winiso to extract the values.txt file from the mfg directories on the 2 disks. I edit the extracted files and added the types I needed. I deleted the values.txt files and replaced them with the "fixed" ones. I then burned new disks.

You can't. Each chassis is unique. They aren't universal. You only can put any motherboard that appear on FRU list. Best regards.

Recently, my HDD has begun to grind to a halt on my Thinkpad Edge e420. I decided to replace the HDD to an SSD, and after many, many unsuccessful attempts to reinstall the OS via Rescue and Recovery, cloning the drive etc, I decided to install the OS onto the new SSD using a windows disk. While this seems to have worked, I now no longer have any of the preinstalled Lenovo software. This is disappointing, but also seems to have reduced the functionality of the laptop (eg the networking device is no longer recognised).Could anyone please recommend a method of reinstalling the Lenovo software onto this new SSD.

Windows 7 right? Download ThinkVantage System Update, it should download most of the drivers and applicable softwares for your E420.

I currently own a Lenovo Thinkpad r61i with a 15 inch screen 1gig of ram, 6.5 lb. and windows vista! I am wanting to buy a new laptop. I am a student and I have my laptop everywhere I go and I need something light, pretty fast, and gets good battery life. I think I want to buy the thinkpad edge, but I have a few questions for people who have already bought it.  How have you handled there being no CD drive. I was thinking that I wouldn't have a problem because I mainly download software but I want to know how others handled it. I think I would image a cd on another computer and mount it with WinMountIs the 1.3ghz CULV processor good for this computer. I really don't want it to hang as that is my current problem or with the high ram is it fineHow is the new keyboard layout. I am constantly typing on my current thinkpad and I want to make sure that it is a good layout as I am constantly taking notes and writing essays    Please answer,Jeremy

Answer:Should I Buy the ThinkPad Edge

Hi Jeremy. I just got my Edge about a week ago.  I am also a college student.  I haven't had any problems getting around the CD drive.  My husband loaded Windows 7 Ultimate to a flash drive, then loaded it onto my computer.  I like not having it.  I was constantly bumping into the open button on my Vaio.  Very irritating when you are taking a timed exam online!  The Edge isn't as light as a netbook but it is pretty light.  I had a hard time deciding on the S10-3t or the Edge (as is evidenced by my posts on these boards--very embarrassing!!).  I am very glad I changed my mind and ordered this one.  I have the AMD Neo X2 L325 (1.5mhz) so I can't help with your question about the 1.3.  What I can tell you is that I haven't had a single issue with hanging.  This machine is very responsive.  I have a Thinkpad z60m.  The keyboard layout seems very similar to me.  I haven't had any trouble acclimating.  AND I LOVE this keyboard.  It has a better feel than the z60m, and that's saying something!  Prior to using this Edge, the Z60m was my favorite keyboard hands down.  I write quite bit (English/Communications major) and this keyboard is very comfortable. Battery power is pretty good.  I'm sure you'd get a lot more out of a netbook. I hope that helps a little. Karen

Question: Thinkpad Edge 14

I've recently received my Edge 14 and upon unboxing, I noticed the top of the laptop (the back of the screen) is curved.  I've seen countless videos and customer photos of their Edge and have not seen this on their's.  The curved screen is very noticeably.  You can also see that the speakers are curved as well due to it.  Does anyone know if its suppose to be like this?  If not then do you think I can get a full refund and none of that 15% restocking free junk?  Besides, I don't think I'm at fault here but rather who ever built the thing.  I am fairly disappointed to see this because I hear Thinkpads are quality built.  This is my first Thinkpad and my first impression was it is just another cheaply made laptop.  I've also bought the sleeve for this and that doesn't even fit properly.  Theres a huge gap when you place the laptop in.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14

Hello mate, Can you take a photo of your laptop ?And for the sleeve, it's because you've got the room for the AC adapter.

Hi,I am very interesting in  buying a Thinkpad Edge 15.6"  but  I have read that some people  feel that the keyboard is a little bit too flexible due to the built in DVD drive.Have Lenovo made anything about this?Feed back from an Edge owner or Lenovo would be appreciated. I also see that Lenovo  in one of the web pages calls the Edge the "new 15.6" .What is new? RegardsStefan

Question: Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi,i had a problem with the monitor backlight on my E525. It went totally gone and i needed a flashlight to see anything. I deinstalled the graphics drivers and it was fine again. I just see everything in 1024*786 and it says "standard vga graphics card" because i have no driver. Now i want to reinstall the Lenovo drivers, but on the homepage i dont find the graphic drivers for E525.Can anyone help? Thanks alot!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi, startrip

I think I found what you're looking for. This is the driver for the AMD graphics that your computer uses. To find drivers on Lenovo's site easily, go to support.lenovo.com, click on Driver Matrix, select the line of computer you have (ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, etc.) and then select your system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello, I am going to be using this laptop for Senior School, already 1 term in and am hating the laptop we recieved 2 years ago. I would prefer if a Lenovo Staff or Moderator can confirm if this is possible to buy as it's not on the Customize page. With the 14" model, I can get the 9 cell battery option but no choice of the Intel Centrino Advanced 6200N wireless card, and with the 15" model I can't get either. I know it's possible to use that card with the edge, but why isn't it avaialable to choose? The same with the 15" with a 9 cell battery option? Cheers, Matt. [This is from the Australian Store]

Hi,     I have recently bought a Thinkpad Edge (AMD / L625) to replace my dependable but very aged Dell Precision M50. The Think Pad Edge I think is a great machine and does everything that I want it to do. One minor niggle and I think it only bugs me because of my engineering background is the systems specs. The Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1325 which is powered by the same processor and chipset can support 8GB of RAM, whereas the Edge can only support 4GB. Given that the memory controller is integrated into the Turion CPU and it is unlikely that Lenovo had AMD fab a custom CPU, shouldn't the edge also support 8GB of RAM. Has anyone tested an 8GB of RAM on an edge?If so does it work?Have Lenovo limited the Edge's RAM capacity through its hardware or software implementation? One final question if the system does support 8GB of RAM does the RADION 3200 IGP then take control of 512MB of system ram, rather than the 256MB when using 4GB of RAM. I was only thinking about this upgrade as a midlife refresh to give the system a little bit more horsepower. Kingston, Crucial and Corsair, to name just a few all make compatible 4GB memory modules, or atleast they conform to the specs of the current 2GB modules. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

Answer:Thinkpad EDGE - AMD - 8GB RAM ?

welcome to the forum!

since the edge likely wasn't tested with 6GB or 8GB, the specs didn't reflect the system's full capability.   the same thing happened with the X61 and T61 systems.   they were rated at 4GB maximum but many users (myself included) are successfully running 8GB.

i'm not personally aware of any limitations in memory.   8GB and even 16GB (if 8GB DDR3 modules are ever released to the public) should be possible.

with that said, i cannot say definitively whether 8GB is supported but i'd be very, very surprised if it weren't.   i have an edge sitting on my desk with 2 x 2GB installed but unfortunately don't have any 4GB DDR3 modules to test.   if i get my hands on a 4GB module or two before this system leaves my office then i'll let you know the results.

enjoy your new system!

just recently bought my first laptop and got good recommendations on lenovo...however i have found everything else to be fairly frustrating. There are no instructions regarding inital battery setup to ensure lengevity in the box. i called customer service. i looked online. they directed me to go back online and read a manual which still did not have the proper information and was organized extremely poorly. basically im just venting a little about my lack of satisfaction and wondering how to get the most out of battery/. I have looked everywhere.

Answer:New Thinkpad edge 14

New owner here also. There was limited documentation in the box, and on the last pages of something that looked like generic policy / license info, I found a few basic instructions. Of note, the battery may not have full capacity until it has been fully charged and discharged for several cycles. Agreed documentation is not the best, but everything is pretty straightforward, except detailed configurations, which is always trial and error. So far, I really like the notebook.

Question: Thinkpad Edge E520

After a few months of very little use only using it once a week or less to watch a movie my laptop refuses to power on. I checked my A/C adapter with a multimeter and its showing normal 20V. I then took out the battery and connected it just to the adapter and it still wouldn't turn on nor would any of its lights flicker. I also tried to disconnect the battery and adapter and hold down the power button for 5 whole minutes but still nothing. What should I do? I checked and its still under warranty.

Hi Guys, I'm debating on getting this laptop, but I have some questions.  I've read all the post and the choice is still confusing to me.  Can you help in answering some questions for me? 1. Are the hinges made of metal or plastic? 2. I am getting Mixed reviews on Battery life. What the the max battery life for Intel model with 6 cell under normal usage(Web surfing, email, MS Office)? What the the max battery life for AMD model with 6 cell under normal usage(Web surfing, email, MS Office)?3. AMD Athlon Neo X2 with ATI Radeon HD 3200 vs Intel Core 2 Duo with Intel GMA 4500MHD:ATI Radeon is a better GPU then Intel GMA, but Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU performs better then AMD Athlon Neo X2.Which performs better for HD Videos and gaming with the current configuration.4. Fan NoiseI've read some people complain about fan noise on the AMD model. Can anyone else confirm this? How noticable is the fan noise?Does the Intel model have the same fan noise issue?5. HeatPeople are reporting that the AMD model generates more heat.  I am assuming that this is due to the AMD CPU using a higher wattage. Can anyone confirm this? How noticable is the heat? Thanks,

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 13 Questions

Hi, Edge 13" intel 7300 for me. * hinges seem metal* fan noise : no pb by using basic applications* heat : same observation; heater in video streaming mode or watching HDD's video* gaming : prefer the AMD version, the discrete 4500 HD card being limited* video streaming : no pb till 720p : some lags in 1080p, but it may be caused by my modem (G norm / 54 Mbs/s) Hoping it helps you.

Until Yesterday my laptop was working fine without any issues. Today it will not turn on!!!!. I tried the following steps: 1- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the battery back in and pushed the power button, but it will not turn on. 2- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the AC adapter (without battery) and push the power button and still not working. Even if AC power adapter is connected, the Power-status indicator is off.  My warranty expired last month and lenovo support told me that I am out of luck. I read that some batches of faulty EEPROM chips are used in the Edge series. Is there any way to check if my chip is in the list? I hope lenovo laptops lasts more than their one year warranty period. Just read the threadE420 motherboard problems          I will try to post this info in all other tech forums i know of so that atleast it may save someone's else money and time.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E40 will not turn on

E40 machines and E420 are different machines. What affected the E420 doesn't affect the Edge E40.Edge E40 was a rebadged Edge 14 series, which is an older generation Edge 14 inch laptop.

Hi, I recently bought a thinkpad edge 13 with the AMD Athlon Neo. Windows 7 and Ubuntu works fine so far,but my CPU is reaching over 90°C (!) during testing with the thinkvantage toolbox stress test.I doubt this is normal.I am logging temperatures with Open Hardware Monitor (Windows 7). Everest Ultimate reports similar temperatures. It seems, that Cool And Quiet is not working, because I can see no changing in current or clock (CPU-Z).

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13 AMD Athlon Neo x2 - very hot!

This laptop really dont support qool n quiet. in my opinion that is the biggest problem.  but your temparature degrees are not  true. everest reads much more then real temperature.  you can check real heat by "rmclock" utility.

I have this notebook for 1.5 years and it worked fine. But a week ago it start to overheat and shutdown, when I playing 3d games. Hardware monitor shows that GPU temperature rapidly grows over 95°C and computer shutdowns or hang. I tried to change  thermal compound and installed TPFanControl. It helps a little, but gpu still overheats, if i used it too long.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 15: GPU overheats

hi svlad,

thanks for posting. Sorry to hear about the issue you're facing but based from your post it does appear that you've had your machine for some time. Over a certain about of time, Dust can also build up in the vents and propellar of the fan which can cause low air transfer flow out of the machine. You might want to check that out. I believe you are an experience enough person to disassemble your machine as you did mention that you have previously changed the thermal compound. please view the link below on the instruction of cleaning the fan.

Is this common place for some of you guys? I got a BSoD with 0X000000F4 error and I determined it to be the HDD which failed, it chirps every so often with very faint clicks, no like the ones where it's reading data. When I go to boot it just hangs on the Thinkvantage Diagnostics window, even when I try to boot to Windows 7 normally. I ran the BIOS diagnostic and that turned up empty handed as It ended only after a few seconds giving the error code 0000, meaning that it could not even Read any data off of the HDD to begin with. What would be the appropriate actions to take for US customer support? Is it going to be Thinkpad support, or does the Edge series have its own line of customer service? Also it says my warranty is up...which seems hardly possible considering the machine was manufactured in March and I bought it from BB about 3 weeks ago (1 week past their return policy) so my receipt would confirm a warranty date of sometime late July...is there a specific email I have to send a scan of my proof of purchase? This is very upsetting to have happen, I noticed the system would lock up briefly at random, surely it was a forecast of the HDD going...which I'm surprised there was no preinstalled software to notice. Also I'm not too confident in the hinge on the Edge either, I even feel more comfortable with my Y510 hinge than the creaky plastic hinge on the Edge 14 (unless I'm mistaken and there is a steel component beneath a shell... Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14 HDD Crash?

My HDD died about 2 weeks after I got the machine.  Sounds like similar symptoms -- random hangs and overall buggy behavior.  You need to contact Lenovo support (which is delivered by IBM here in the US.) Regarding the warranty, be sure you've registered the machine before you call for support.  I wasn't able to do so properly (long story) and spent way too much time trying to get IBM and Lenovo to figure out that the machine was indeed under warranty.  I couldn't get any warranty info from the website when I entered my machine type and SN. When I got the machine back, it needed drivers for the wireless card and sound card.  I suspect it didn't get the right image and they don't check because the install is finished by the user. As I was saying to a customer today, not an example of outstanding customer support and one reason this may be my last ThinkPad. Agreed on the hinges -- note that on the 15, the display only connects to the hinges on the outside (the inside of the display/lid near the speakers doesn't touch the hinges.) Also agreed on the lack of webcam software.  I don't really need it, but I would expect there to be something basic installed on the machine. Overall, I think the Edge is a consumer-grade laptop with a ThinkPad name.  Granted, it's less expensive than other ThinkPads which makes it a little easier to accept its shortcomings. Good luck!

Hi Jleppart,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issues with not booting to Windows on your ThinkPad Edge E531.

The issue could be with Operating System or with HDD, suggest you to check with performing BIOS diagnose by pressing F10 key and run HDD and Memory diagnose to verify if the issue with hardware or with software.

My Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 is dead, system board is out for no known reason. Bought it in Feb 2011, so its 2 years and 8 months old. The price of a new board is prohibitive, and I can't find a used one. By forking out the premium price for a Thinkpad I expected to get at least 3 years out of it. Also own an IBM T30 I bought back in 2003, still working. Also bought a Lenovo 3000 N100 six years ago, still going. I always used my Thinkpad Edge in a safe and protected environment, rarely took it out, never abused it, always took great care of it. I'm really disappointed, i thought I was set for life with this line of laptops - I run a software company. I'm not angry but I really don't think I'm getting another Lenovo. I'll probably give HP a try.  IBM quality is gone, good bye Lenovo.

Hey all,  So I've had the Edge 14 for about a month now. I am really happy with it for the most part, but the display does this weird thing. Every once in a while, doesn't matter if it's on battery or on AC, the brightness is lowered (even though the brighness indicaor shows max brightness) and the colors wash out and start looking really weird. It sometimes solves this on it's own or it can be cured by lowereing and increasing brightness again. I can' figure out how or why this is happening. Has anybody else faced this? Is there a solution ? Thanks all !!

check the dimming settings in power manager; had the same with an edge 13 and solved it by disabling dimming altogether

My battery on the Thinkpad edge says only 27 % left. We tried to reset, but nothing happened. What should we do?

Answer:Battery Thinkpad Edge 15

Hey there Nancy,

If you could, please provide us with a few more details. I see your using a ThinkPad Edge 15, about how long have you had the machine? What is the machine type and model number of your machine? (It should be in this format: XXXX-XXX) and usually is found on the underside of the machine on the label next to the serial number, or in the battery compartment on the label located there.

Is this an overtime decrease, or is all of a sudden?

Have you tried a static discharge? Here is how to perform the Thinkpad static discharge:

Unplug the power supply
Remove the battery
Disconnect any cords or express cards
Press the power button 10 times, and on the 10th press hold it for 30 seconds

Some of the ThinkPad Edge 15's needed a battery firmware update to correct an issue with the charge %. Have you tried using this firmware update?

I look forward to hearing back from you nancywintner!

Hello,My nearly brand new Thinkpad (2 months tomorrow) won't start up anymore. After the initial start-up screen with the Thinkpad Logo it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left-hand corner. Can anybody please tell me how I can enter a secure windows 7 or reset to the last previously working set-up? I installed one program during my final session during which the laptop was working fine. I've got the same software on my old Notebook and never had any problems with it.Really annoyed with the Lenovo support system already. Hi, My Problem: I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15, which shuts down under greater stress. Initially, it was only in more demanding games like Portal 2, then it has spread to other games that I previously could easily play 2 hours, (eg Fallout, Skyrim). Meanwhile, it also shuts down on Facebookapps or HD-Movies. Process: While im playing or working on my Computer, all my Monitors (i have 2 of them) turn black and the computer is off. then the computer starts again and reports, that windows was not shut down properly. A failure report doesnt exist. All same Apllications are shutting down in the same way again and again.  What i have already done: I Cant imagine that the temperature is the problem. The laptop gets warm, but i can easaly touch it.All drivers are up to date and a hardware scan has revealed nothing. It would be gread if someone could explain the problem and give me a proper solution. Sincerely yoursFrost753

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 Shutdown

Hi, I can probably give you some hints on how to solve this (I'm on a W510) a) use a cooling-pad (you've probably expected that)b) for GAMES (actually Skyrim was the reason why I stumbled upon your post) use SW to 'underclock' your GPU.  In my case - Skyrim - underclocking the GPU solved ALL problems (and it IS a heating-problem). I use 'EVGA Precision X' (google it) to underclock. Funny thing is: I can play at higher res without lags, without crash. Reading your post I truly believe that you HAVE a heating problem.  My laptop never crashed, but Skyrim brought it down - like every 15 Minutes. I must say that the gpu/cpu/hd temperatures CAN be higher (eg. when re-encoding video ,...) without a crash  - but for some reason, that game brought my laptop down - even at lower temperatures.hope this helpsbest regards

I've had my Edge 15 for few years now, and it's been perfect for me, but like a week ago the cooling fan started to kick in very often and is quite loud. I tried to clean the fan, ( it was very dusty ) but it was very difficult beacuse I couldn't plug out the cooling fan wire ( It just didn't come out ) , so I did my best cleaning it like that. I also had to unscrew the processor thermal paste area to get the fan out and I noticed that the thermal paste is is not in the center but is around the main area, could that be the problem why the cooling fan is always on and so loud? P.S Realtemp shows that temperatures are around 38-50 degrees Celsius when watching videos or using the browser. Is that normal?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 cooling fan

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that cooling fan of your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 is running at high speeds.

If your laptop feels hot and shows any of the problems below, chances are its overheating or getting there:

Fan constantly running and making loud whirring noises
Computer struggling to perform basic tasks like opening a new browser window
Mysterious error messages popping up in random programs
Lines on your laptop screen (a sign your video card is overheating)
System freezing or the dreaded BSOD (blue screen of death)
The laptop abruptly shuts down on its own

Optimal operating temperature is 50° Celsius (122° Fahrenheit) or below during normal operation of the device. Use dust remover spray to clean out of the laptop's vents. Dust can accumulate in and block the laptop's fan vents. Start using compatible cooling pads which will help in the flow of cool air into the underside vents of the laptop. Keep your working environment or computer room as comfortably cool as possible. While applying thermal paste, put the paste on the CPU and the weight of the cooler alone will take care of the spreading. Thermal paste smaller than the size of a pea in the middle is what you need.

The temperature range you have mentioned seems to be quite normal.

Hope this helps!

Best Regards,
Mithun.

hi, recently i have a problem with my laptop, it started with a blue screen and a lot of white letters, then it turns off by it self, i turneded  "on" and it goes to the "windows error recovery"" so, i choose safe mode to try to get system restore, and NOTHING... IT JUST WENT  TO ADVANCE SYSTEM RECOVERY,  i tryed many times this way with no success, so the option i got was to go to advance recovery, i press ok to continue, after it finishe it say that it went to the point of new like the factory sended, now it doesn't boot up at all.... and everytime I turn it on it goes to the windows error recovery over and over again and try to load windows by it self..... what should I do???

Answer:my thinkpad edge can't reboot.... please help!!!

Hi, 365hvacr

There are a few options that you could utilize for this issue. If you are trying to boot into Safe Mode to try and restore Windows to an earlier place in time, you could try booting into Safe Mode manually, which can be accomplished by tapping F8 when you turn on your system until a menu pops up asking if you want to go into Safe Mode. Select Safe Mode and see if that lets you get to your desktop.

Another method to accomplish a system restore will involve using WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment). This method requires a recovery disc, but you should be able to boot from the CD and use the disc to set Windows back to an earlier state.

The final method also requires a Windows disc, but would involve reinstalling Windows. This would remove all of your files, however.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E40 no display

Hi Dre,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that there is no display in your Lenovo ThinkPad E40.

I would like to thank you for all the efforts you have done to fix the issue on your own.

Try removing the memory, start the system and check if you hear beep sounds. If there is no beep sound, probably it?s a system board issue.

Please let me know the happenings!

Hi,Does anyone have any idea why Lenovo hasn't updated the Intel gma drivers for the 13" edge? The 8.15.10.1872 that Lenovo provides is over 2 years old and doesn't have flash hardware decoding for example. For a laptop with such a slow CPU, GPU hw decoding would be great. The about:support in Firefox says: GPU Accelerated Windows 0. Blocked for your graphics driver version. Try updating your graphics driver to version 8.15.10.2202 or newer. I tried downloading the newest driver from Intel's site but the installer said I need to download the "manufacturer specific" driver cause "something might break". If anyone from Lenovo reads this, please get your driver team to update the drivers  //Oldgrain

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 13 GPU drivers

So, it's been ~3½ months, no one has answered this and there has been no driver updates. Does anyone know of a better way to get attention from Lenovo about driver updates as it seems they're not reading this forum/acting on it at all. The newer edge versions have updated drivers so I can't figure out why it is so hard to get newer drivers for the old model as well. I even tried downloading the updated driver for E430 but they wouldn't install either. Hoping someone from Lenovo would read this and at least answer it.

I just installed a new pair of RAM this afternoon. After that the notebook does not turn on. Tried removing both the memories. But still the same.  It is not sending any beeps or anything, just black screen. Even my motherboard does not turn on. Is there any way to reset the power? I have tried the traditional power reset method of thinkpads. But nothing worked. Your help will be appreciated.

I just bought Edge 14 and there was no windows 7 reinstallation cd. In a case of I need to format a hard drive, how do I reinstall the OS? Also the proper way to use battery and ac power with the laptop is use only one power source at a time right (I had thinkpad t61 and this was the case, but on edge 14 I see no battery indicator light so maybe this is not the case anymore?) so for example, if I'm using battery power then ac power needs to be unplugged and if using ac power then battery not inserted. I heard this way the battery capacity stays max. Can anyone verify this please? Thank you.

Hi guys,I'd be very grateful if you could help with the following Thinkpad Edge 13 issues:1. Heating. The fan is blowing hot air from the vent on the left. The bottom left of the keyboard also gets very, very hot. How can I cool it down?2. WiFi. The WiFi adapter turns off after the laptop goes to sleep. I think have to run the troubleshoot to restore it again. Very annoying problem - any ideas on a fix?3. Freezing. This might be related to the heat problem, but since I installed a new hdd, the laptop freezes for about 30 seconds before coming back to life again. It seems especially the case when watching video.4. Video. When watching video on VLC, if I jog the laptop only slightly, the video freezes or stutters. I have to keep the laptop perfectly still to avoid this. Is that normal?Any help with this would be much appreciated! Thanks kindly.

Hey So I've had my Thinkpad Edge 14 since the end of last summer.  I keep putting this off but now it has gotten to the point where I am sick of it.  Here is my problem: I plug my Thinkpad Edge 14 into the charger, which is obviously plugged into an outlet.  Usually it's while the system is still running but lately I've tried shutting it down first.  Now, about 1-2 minutes after I plug the laptop in, the CPU starts to FREAK OUT.  I have Rainmeter set up so I can keep track of my CPU/RAM/network and such.  So my little graph of my CPU starts to spike and it goes from 0% -> 26% -> 0% -> 78% -> 100% ->0% and so on and so forth.  This doesn't happen over time, this happens constantly.  The CPU just keeps jumping and dropping.  This kills my performance.  Everything becomes jumpy and slow.  Opening a folder or my browser (which should take 2 seconds, if that) now takes about a minute.  Before, I was able to just turn off my laptop and turn it back on, no problems.  Now, I turn it off and turn it on 3-4 times and it is still jumping so I just let it sit there till the machine is charged.  I've gotten into the habit of just charging it overnight just so I don't have to deal with it in the morning.  I haven't a clue what is wrong or how to stop it.  This also has nothing to do with going to the Task Manager and ending a few processes.  I've tried and it does nothing. I'm... My 1 and a half year old thinkpad edge E520 over heated. it was only 5-6 months over the warranty. I am personally dissapointed that my computer only lasted that extremely short amount of time. I paid $800 dollars for that computer and honestly expected to get more life out of it. Some other issues I had with this computer were a hard drive problem and an optical drive problem. I was wondering if these are due to flaws in this particular model or my bad luck.

I want to add more memory and the detailed specification for this model(E530) states that the maximum memory is 8GB

I have looked at and spoken to two reliable suppliers of memory who both indicate on their websites and have confirmed by phone that the maximum is 16Gb (2 x 8GB).

Can anyone please advise me which is correct. If 16GB is possible are there inherent risks or other modifications involved?

Hello yorkie9, welcome to the forums,

I don't know if, in the meantime, you've found your answer elsewhere but the answer is yes. 16GB is possible in your E530 and the other websites were correct; the Lenovo site states what was correct at the time when there were no 8GB RAM modules being manufactured.

I bought a Thinkpad Edge E530 about a year in a half ago, now, it is out of it's warranty and it will not power on! The laptop is in pretty bad condition - the pastic covering the heatsink is missing, the screen was replaced, and it is basically held together by a few screws, superglue and duct tape (Seriously). I put it in storage for about 4-5 months, recently (About 2 weeks ago) I took it out. As it kept on overheating and the screen was falling apart, I decided to clean out the fan and superflue the screen back in place. I powered down the computer and took off the bottom access panel to air-dust the fan. I then applied some glue to the seams of the screen. When I screwed everything back together, I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I tried using only the AC adaptor, only the battery, both, replacing the little battery inside, and pressing the power button 10 times (Although unsure if done correctly). The only sign of "life" from the computer is if I plug in the AC adaptor, a very faint buzzing occurs from a metal block next to a removable chip with 2 wires coming out of it (Presumably the WiFi/Networking chip?). The block looks like a SMD compnent and is labeled with  "100" on the top of it. I'm not sure what it is and it is creating a faint buzzing noise so you have to put your ear against it to hear. I've tried every possible step - and It is definently not any physical damage done to the laptop, because no sudden drops or damage was taken after it be... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 430 Bluetooth

Hi, aaaaa

Your machine should have Bluetooth capability. I would first recommend making sure the driver for your Bluetooth device is up to date, which can be found here.

Once that is updated, you should be able to scan for devices by navigating to Settings ? Change PC settings ? Devices and selecting Add a device. If your goal is to connect your computer and mobile phone together, then make sure that Bluetooth is enabled on your mobile phone. If you continue to lack the Add a device in this menu, could you please take a screenshot with Snipping Tool and post it here?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

I'm quite surprised. Everything I heard about ThinkPads was that they were great machines, and would last you years and years. Well, I guess I got a lemon.  My ThinkPad Edge 14 was great; typing was a pleasure and I want an ultranav on every piece of technology I own. Then one day the graphics card stopped working. Sent it off, got it back, worked again. Okay. Then, while doing the extremely strenuous activity of opening and closing the lid, a piece broke off in my hand. Okay. I can still use it, though. The ethernet never did work, but maybe that was a problem with my ethernet... despite every other computer I tried working fine. Okay. WiFi still worked just fine. A couple of months ago, a new problem popped up. I noticed that if I rested my left hand a certain way on the lower case, the laptop would stop. The cute little dot on ThinkPad would stay lit, and the screen would be lit, just black. Oh, and the fan would still run. But, otherwise unrecoverable. Have to hold down power and wait for it to turn off, then try to turn it back on again. I was in the middle of exams; I needed this thing to work. So, I became oh-so-careful with that lower left area below the keyboard. Woe to me if I accidentally droppped a pen on it though. But I was busy, and I could compensate for it, so I soldiered on. The battery life was terrible, so I had to carry my charger everywhere. The battery gauge was unrelieable. It'd say I would have around 40 minutes left, and then go into e... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 won't boot

Hi Matt,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 is not booting up.

I would suggest you to perform Flee Power ? remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Remove the RAM, power it up and check if you hear beep sounds.  Reinstall the RAM, startup normally and check if the system boots normally.

If you have a spare good known battery and adapter, try powering on the system using the same just to ensure that it?s not a battery/adapter failure.

Please let me know the happenings!

I have a new issue with my laptop (ThinkPad Edge 14; 0578A25) where the battery will not charge. I have not had a problem until recently, and I don't know what caused it.  The changes that have occurred since the last time I know it was charging correctly are as follows. Prior to noticing battery not chargingUpgrade all Lenovo drivers and software through "Lenovo - Update and Drivers" in the control panelNoticed the new "Battery Firmware Update" in Power Manager that wasn't in the old version.BFU Utility said it was up-to-dateAfter noticing battery wasn't chargingUninstalled Power Manager and Power Manager Driver, reset Power Schemes, and restarted computerBattery still not charging, so I downloaded the battery firmware update wrapper from the Lenovo website and ran it (said firmware was up-to-date as well)Reinstalled Power Manager and Power Manager DriverRan a Battery Gauge Reset, but it wouldn't run (battery wasn't charging to full capacity, thus my problem again) I don't know what else to try or where to go from here.  Is there anything I can try, perhaps a way to reload the firmware to try and reset it.  I don't want to have to buy a new battery when this one was working fine until I used a Lenovo Utility that obviously broke something.

I have recently bought a Thinkpad Edge - and as I am completely useless with  technology still learning it's capabilities.  I do know I have Windows 7.  Should I be able to download a CD on to the laptop - then play it without requiring additional software ?  At the moment I can't.  I can download on to image but then it advises me I can't play it because (.ixb) is not recognised by Windows Media Player.  I can insert and play CD's - thanks !

Answer:Thinkpad Edge- should I be able to download CD's

Hi Brownma,

Welcome To Lenovo Forums.

The CD which you have downloaded is an ixb file image which you would require to burn the image to a disc first then listen to the content from there.

You might need to purchase the software via link

Hi!  I have a ThinkPad Edge that  I bought from BestBuy. I don't know the model but the type is 057826U. I pressed F9 and i dont see the bluetooth options. I also searched on BIOS and didnt see it either. Does that mean I do not have bluetooth connectivity??? But I have a bluetooth transfer center on my laptop...If i do have bluetooth, can anyone tell me how to turn it on. Thanks!

Answer:Does my ThinkPad Edge come with bluetooth?

hello there,Yes, as a matter of fact, it does. I faced the exact same problem today.Click the "Wireless connections" button (shared with F9), a large-ish window called "Wireless radios" will appear.Pull down the arrow next to "Individual control" just below. You will probably see that 802.11 Wireless is green but Bluetooth is greyed out. Click it, it should turn green. If you're lucky (I wasn't), your device manager will say that the BT is right there and running. If you have a warning sign next to it, though, this is what you need to do:Right-click the BT entry, select "update driver" and wait until it finds, downloads, and installs new drivers. For me, the whole process took about 2-3 minutes. After that, your BT should become fully active, and you will be able to connect your mouse / printer / phone / whatever.Good luck, wyrm
