Thinkpad Edge E520 - power off display button

Question: Thinkpad Edge E520 - power off display button

Hi, I have a question about ways how to power off display on Thinkpad Edge E520 (probably Edge in general). I know it can be power off by right clicking on Power manager and select power off display, but I am quite dissatisfied with this solution. Before Thinkpad I had laptop Lenovo from Idea series and I would appreciate if I could have the same option with Thinkpad to power off display by button...Is there any solution for Edge series for that ? Thanks, Peter

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I own a ThinkPad Edge E520 (1143ADU) with a scratched display. I would like to replace it, but am also looking for options. I could order the same part from Lenovo, but I find the screen (15.6", WXGA HD) that came with the computer less than satisfactory at reproducing colours (photo editing). Are there quality third-party options, or can I use a better display from another ThinkPad (I can't find any compatibility info)? I am looking at improving sharpness and colour replication first, and not necessarily at increasing pixel resolution.

I have four Thinkpad Edge E520 laptops that don't indicate power from the powr supply or power on at all. I tried using the battery from a machine that does work and testing the power supplies on other machines that work, but none of the four problem children power up at all. I've removed all of the perihperals but no power or boot up. Also removed the battery with only external power and then tried to boot. Tried only with the battery and no boot. I checked the power supplies with a volt meter and they are a steady 20.33VDC. The charge indicator light on the side near the charging jack does not light up at all. Is it a fault of the charging board or the motherboard? Anyone know of have the same problem that has been fixed? Thanks.

I have a Thinkpad Edge 13 which I have enjoyed and is almost problem free. However, the power button in the upper right hand corner sometimes does not respond well. I can push the button many times without it coming on. Finally it does come on after many repeated attempts. Does anyone have a similar problem? I am thinking about returning computer as it is still under warranty, but that is also a pain. Thanks for any help with this.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 13 Power button problem

hey jsolson,i recommend that you bring it to the service center. It is a possibility that the button contact with the mainboard is damaged.

I called tech support and they told me hot remove battery, AC adapter and press the power button 10 times. I followed these steps and when I plug battery  and NOT AC adapter the laptop start. On start up it showed me Date is incorrect and I need to setup. Right after 30-50 sec the laptop off all of sudden.  Now- if I plug the AC adapter - Never work, never on, no light- If I plug ONLY battery and remove AC adapter, it on for 1 min only and turn off (with system time showing 01/01/2001) Looks like the laptop running on COMS battery so that is why it work only for a one minute and get turned off. When it start I can see following things in windows 7:1. Time is incorrect 2. Battery 95% changed3. It turn off itself in after  a minute Every time I need to start, I need to perform: 1. Connect AC adapter and battery 2. Remove AC adapter and battery 3. Press power button 10 times and hold for 20 seconds 4. Put the battery back and DO NOT plug the AC adapter 5. On the laptop, its get on for 1 min and get turn off (if I try to attach AC adapter it doesn't start and if attach AC adapter while its already stared its just turn off)     Need some help. Please.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 550 not starting on pressing power button

Hi Shikhardadhich,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Please perform the below given steps and confirm me regarding the same.

Have you tried checking with the different good known battery and adapter? If not please try checking with different good known battery and adapter. Or check the faulty laptop adapter and battery in the other good known laptop.
As you said the laptop is getting power on only for few and it gets shutdown all of a sudden, here can you please confirm me whether it goes to BIOS page. If yes leave the laptop idle in BIOS mode and check whether it gets shutdown. To go to BIOS page, once the laptop is switched on keep tapping on F1 key to go to BIOS page.
Before doing all the above steps please make sure whether the battery is fully charged?

Please let me know with the above steps to assist you further.
Thank you, have a good day.

I work for a school district that is in Phase 1 of a 1 to 1 project, we purchased 250 lenovo edge 14s from a leasing company that were coming off of lease, we have some that do not work. In repairing them we have found that the ribbon cable on FRU 60Y5597 has connections damaged and or missing. We don't need the entire assembly just the ribbon cable. Is there any place to order this part? There is no part number on the cable and the HMM only lists the Keyboard Bezel assembly(60Y5597). I could understand if the cable was hard wired to the power switch but it isn't. It seems like a waist to have to order the entire assembly when a tiny cable will fix the issue. I understand these laptops are out of warranty, so any help would be appreciated. Also just FYI we will be in the market for an addition 450 laptops next year as we enter phase 2, the decision comes down to cost, durability, support, ease of repair,, and parts availability.

ribbon cable isn't a FRU so you can't order it separately.

Question: Thinkpad Edge e520

Just got Thinkpad  Edge e520, replacing my  trusty and  reliable 3000 n100 that  is  actually  still working.  This machine, upgrade that  it is, is not very  impressive.  The  hypersensitive keyboard is driving me  nuts with  all  the multiple,  repetitive  letters it's producing, forcing me to correct  almost all words,  including those I''m typing now.........otherwise  it  would be  unreadable.  Hopefully adjustments can be made, or back it goes.  Hello Apple!     Other problems right out of  box, most of  which I've taken care  of, with  some assist by Lenovo Tech support.  However, still  can't get  Simple Tap to  function fully or consistently  after uninstall/install  couple times,  better but not right.  I've never gotten the finger tap part to work at  all, though I can click OK.   My old 3000 had much  better  feel to it,  and at least to  me,  a ggrreeatt feeling trackpad  compared to this. Suggestions?.......................by the  way, I  left the word great in prior sentence as it came out of computer as an example of  what  is printing.

Question: Thinkpad Edge E520

After a few months of very little use only using it once a week or less to watch a movie my laptop refuses to power on. I checked my A/C adapter with a multimeter and its showing normal 20V. I then took out the battery and connected it just to the adapter and it still wouldn't turn on nor would any of its lights flicker. I also tried to disconnect the battery and adapter and hold down the power button for 5 whole minutes but still nothing. What should I do? I checked and its still under warranty.

Hey Guys! I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520. Im quite sure it supports Ultrabay, because I can remove one screw and pull out the DVD-drive while system is running without any problems  My question is: There are 2 different hard drive adapters available (at least here in germany), which one is the right for my model? There is one saying "the newer one" with 12.7mm and a special thing for holding the harddrive save in place:click here And the other one, named with "for older models" with 9.5mm and not this special holding-stuffclick here I don't know which one is right, but from measuring the dimensions of my DVD-Drive, I guess I need the bigger one (which would be the first)Any help? thanks

Answer:Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

The PSREF says that the DVD drive is not removeable:

"DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable, tray-in
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,
removable, upgradable"

I have the Thinkpad Edge E520, which I got about 4 months ago and it has been working fine until now. I am using it plugged in, but the power supply percentage seems to be slowly decreasing and never charges up. It's currently on 65% and I'm worried that if I keep using the computer it will eventually just run out and not turn on. What should I do?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 not charging

I suggest you to uninstall the Power Management from the Programs and features under Control Panel. After uninstalling the driver, please download and install the Power Management driver ad then Kindly download Power Manager and then install it in your system.
You may also need to update the BIOS of your system. Kindly download and install all the drives from the below mentioned web link according to your Operating System.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I signed up for the reason being that I've been having some heat/cooling issues on my Lenovo Thinkpad E520. I don't know why this is happening, as I bought the device a few months back. It's still under standard warranty. Here are some screenshots of the computer running Prime95, then the computer running nothing (Idle). The heat issues affect the performance of the graphics card. This get very annoying, when I'm playing Battlefield 3 it runs at a smooth FPS for 5 minutes then drops the FPS down to about 1/3 for about 10-20 seconds. I know the laptops aren't meant for gaming but this wasn't a problem when I bought the laptop. But, now I had enough, I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Thats it running prime 95. You can see the temperature varies from 90-99 degrees.

Thats the computer running nothing but Windows, Speccy and CPU-Z. The temperature varies between 60-65. At idle it's ok but it still shouldn't run like this.

Hallo, I consistently experience random shutdowns with my Thinkpad Edge E520. However, the shutdowns only seem to occur when it is connected to the Lenovo USB 2.0 Port-Replicator with Digital Video through which I link the notebook with a Lenovo monitor and a Lenovo keyboard. So far there have been no shutdowns when the notebook is running on its own without the port-replicator. However, I mostly use the notebook with the port replicator so that this observation may not be representative. Is it possible that using the port-replicator leads to shutdowns? Has anyone any experience with that? A different potential source of the problem may be the RAM: One RAM-card is manufactured by Samsung, the other by Kingston, the latter having been added by the PC vendor. Does Lenovo actually manufacture the RAM-cards it sells in its own shop or is it supplied with RAM-cards from another RAM-card-manufacturer like Samsung and simply labels those with Lenovo stickers so that it doesn't make a difference which one one buys? Could the recovery of the system software help? I don't see how as Windows obviously recognises both RAM-cards and the Lenovo RAM-test confirms them as fully operable. Thanks. Kind regards, Simon

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 - random shutdowns.

download Prime95 and run it without the port replicator inserted, see whether it causes any sort of shutdown. What if you link the monitor directly to the laptop HDMI or VGA?

Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

About a week and a half ago, my laptop got its first ever virus since owning it for 5 years. So, I wiped it using a handy dandy data destruction software.  Got everything set back up, but now...none of my video editing software will work.  I think its a driver issue - i know i am missing at least a few of them since wiping. But i do not know which ones specifically i am missing.  Is there a way i can pull up a list of all the drivers i currently have, PLUS the ones i still need? Like, my aspect ratio.  Its in proportion, somewhat.  Its just a tad bit...stretched.  I use to know how to fix that, but now, for the life of me, i can not remember how to do it. I know i need a new computer, but i dont have the funds right now to get one.  Plus, this one suits me just fine.

Answer:Missing Drivers for ThinkPad EDGE E520

Hello and welcome,

If you haven't already, install and run ThinkVantage System Update.  It should offer to download and install the drivers appropriate to your machine.

My e520 laptop recently began freezing on me on startup. I noticed the other night when I turn on my laptop, all is fine and I wait for it to boot up..Then when I go to click on anything (folder/browser icon, etc) on the desktop, the screen and keyboard just completely freezes and I am unable to press anything or click out. This has been happening with increased regularity and the only option I have is to manually hold down on the power button and see if the next boot up will present me with the same issue. I am finding that I have to manually reboot 6, 7, 8, 9 times for this freezing issues to go away. I have scanned the laptop for any viruses, etc. and all seems fine. What can be the issue here? Any council or expertise on this subject will be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 freezing issues

Hi, shyguy

I would recommend doing a hardware scan on your disk drive and your RAM to see if either of them are experiencing hardware faults. This can be done using the BIOS hardware scans. To access these tests, turn on the computer and tap Enter a few times to interrupt normal startup. When the menu appears, press F10 to diagnose hardware. This should open up another program. I would run the Quick Memory Test and the Quick Storage Device Test with all options selected. After running these, please post your results and we can can go from there.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Whenever I try to play starcraft2 on medium (which even the intel chp is capable of doing) it looks like this when using the radeon: http://img217.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2011050510363.jpg/I emailed AMD about this and they told me its probably a drivers issue but their CCC doesnt support the switchable graphics notebooks and I should ask lenovo for drivers. But I cant find anything but drivers for the intel chip. I also dont have a phone available right now and I cant seem to find a support email adress and this is getting pretty frustrating and makes me wonder why they use this switchable graphics thing if they cant even make it work   I tried turning the intel chip off but CCC wont recognize the radeon even when I do this, also for some reason deactivating one of the graphics cards seems to make the other one not working properly anymore either :/ I found this on the starcraft board where a guy uses the same graphics card / intel / driver and has the same issue:http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2057776037Im a bit underwelmed by the lack of email support, hopefully someone can help me out hereThanks alotDavid

I have a lenovo thinkpad e520 with an i3 2310 processor. I want to buy the i7 2720qm and put it in myself but I have noticed that the lenova website only seems to offer an upgrade of their own up to the i7 2620. I am curious as to whether or not this laptop will support the i7 2720 and whether it will be able to withstand the heat produced from it and its power consumption. I know the motherboard is a sandy bridge so it will most likely accept the cpu but what else could go wrong with installing it ( not including damaging during installation). The i7 2720 has a tdp of 45w while the 2620 has a 35w tdp. Is this a problem? Also the i7 2620 and lesser are dual cores while the 2720 is a quad. Will this cause any problems considering the surface area of the heat sink only support dual cores ? Also, will there be any issues with the battery and charger relative to the 2720's power usage as stated before? I called lenova and their tech supports dont seem to have much knowledge on it. I figured the possibility that lenova uses this e series as a less power consuming option so to include the i7 2720 might take awaay from their advertising yet it might still work if done outside of their upgrades.I guess thats about it lol and thanks!  If you also could tell me if the 2820 will work that wil be greatly appreciated as well.

Answer:CPU upgrade for Thinkpad Edge e520 1143

TLDRQuads are using sligthly different socket, max you can fit instead of i3-2310m is i7-2640m (it's new max dual core after sandy bridge refresh, previously it was i7-2620M mentioned by you) Side note: IMHO Ex20 would survive quads with equal or slightly higher TDP easily.

I am having a nightmare trying to get my laptop going again after a hdd failure.Fortunately I managed to burn the necessary disks from the recovery partition before the hard drive gave up.However with a new hdd installed and upWindows 7 back on via the recovery disks I have got a limp and useless machine. It appears that the recovery disk doesn't include all the original drivers as the display is using a bog-standard generic driver and some unknown devices show in device manager. My main issue though is Windows Update since reinstall is disabled and I have tried allsorts to get it up and running with no success. I've also tried to update the lenovo toolkit to automatically update the drivers and that will not update either - claiming it needs .Net 4 and .Net 4.5 running to do so. I have tried to install via Microsoft website but .net 4 fails during install and 4.5 wont install without 4. So I cannot update Windows 7 nor the installed Lenovo software. I have tried to manually download drivers from the lenovo site but my Internet is so slow and some of the drivers are so large (200mb+) that most downloads are stalling or timing out before they complete. Any help or ideas please - otherwise its a new laptop purchase for me and it won't be a Lenovo.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 Recovery Nightmare

Hi,

I"m surprised that your recovery media didn't install all the original drivers.  It should have AFAIK.

If your recovery media is old enough to pre-date SP1 _and_ youve installed an advanced format drive (most HDDs are these days) that could explain the windows update problem.

In that case, this KB should help: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Windows-Update-Fails-After-Installing-New-Hard-...

Once you get win update running try again to get ThinkVantage System Update installed.  That should get your drivers updated.

My wife's Edge E520 has the "won't turn on problem". Before I return it to the service centre I would like to back-up the hard disk. What is the best way. I have an Edge 15.Can I just move the Hard Drive across to the 15 and run back-up? Or would I be better to get an external disk case for a 2.5 SATA drive and put the disk in that and back it up from there. Any advice would be appreciated. I am always wary after one service centre wiped my daughters disk for a keyboard change!

Answer:Back-up Thinkpad Edge E520 which will not turn on.

Either way will be okay. But using the external drive option will be the preferred option, as you wont have the driver reinstallation problem.

You can't upgrade the graphics card without changing out the entire motherboard. The Intel HD3000 graphics adapter should score way better than that, though.

Hey there guys, I've been having a stack load of trouble with this laptop. I loved it when it was working but the last few months have been incredibly frustrating. It started with the yellow DC in plug slowly breaking, it then wouldn't accept the charger and I couldn't use the laptop. I was busy at the time so sent it away to be repaired, the repair company called me and asked if I also wanted the screen replaced. I was pretty shocked as it was fine before I sent it and I packaged it really really well. I contacted the courier company and they said they'd need to inspect it to see if I can make a claim or not, so I paid the $50 "inspection fee" from the repair company and it was then picked up. I got a call a few days later saying the courier company wouldn't accept fault as they think it was already broken. Which is complete BS. I KNOW it wasn't broken. So they send it back to me. I now am $50 + postage down and have a laptop which needs even more repairs. Fast forward to this week, I end up purchasing a new DC in card and putting that in myself. Put it all back together and everything looks good. Plug in the charger, push power, everything is going good. I can hear the fans spin up, the hard drive spins up, I'm feeling pretty excited (screen is still broken, I wanted to see if it powered up fine before spending money on replacing that). There is nothing at all showing up on the screen, not even back light. I think it may just be the screen so plug in the HDMI... Read more

This laptop has a 1x1 11bgn lan card in it and I'm only getting from 24 to 48 mbps.  How can I get to connect at higher rates. Thanks,  Jerry

Answer:e520 thinkpad edge low wireless mbps

It depends on how close you are to the router and how strong the connection is. If you're far away or there's a lot of interference, the connection speed will automatically drop to ensure data integrity. You may want to see if your access point is operating in 802.11g mode.

Answer:thinkpad edge E520 drivers download

Hello and welcome,

I'm pretty sure those drivers are available on the Lenovo site.  The usual recommendation is to download and install the wired network driver first (using whatever machine is on the network and copying over via flash drive or CD or whatever) then directly download ThinVantage System Update, and let it pull down all the other drivers and apps.

(I'm on the US site - yours may be different) Click on the "Support" link above, then "Download Drivers and Software" then select your machine ("Quick Path" is easiest) then "Refine". That should bring up a full menu of drivers and software.  Expand "Networking" and download and install the Realtek Giga LAN driver.  You could also go directly to a wifi driver if you know what your internal wifi card is.

Once you have the network, come back to that page with your E520, expand "ThinkVantage Technology" and install System Update.  Run that and let it pull down the rest.

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

Just got a new Edge E520 NZ33MUK , specs here: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_ThinkPad_Edge_E520_1076383.html Having an AMD 6630, one of the first things I wanted to do was try out the gaming ability, so with the system pretty much factory fresh I installed Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Basically Oblivion hangs during loading for me. Specifically It hangs immediately before the tan menu screen appears. It doesn't say that it's jammed up, and if I ctr-alt-del to task manager it says 'running' i.e. fine, but the screen is just black nothing happening. So far I have tried:Checking all graphics/ audio driversAll different compatibility modesAll different graphics settingSet oblivion.exe to high performance (discreet) graphics Disabled User account controlSwitching graphics to integrated in BIOSDisabling intel graphics in Device manager Switching to 16bit colourAny ideas / Anyone in a similar situation? Thanks,Dave

I bought this laptop on Aug 29th (or close to that) and after using it for about 3 weeks there's a problem with the resolution i suppose? It happens randomly but it usually happens when i turn on the computer with the battery in. I made a mistake before by taking the battery out when the computer was asleep, and that's when it started to have this problem. My brother thought that i probably messed up the driver so he reinstalled it. It was fine right after he reinstalled it, but then the problem happened again soon afterwards. I don't know why but the original resolution setting was 1440 x 900 (and it's recommended?) When I changed it to 1366x768, it showed even less of what it's supposed to show. This is a picture of my screen right now. You can see a little of the circle on the top left corner of the screen. It's supposed to be a full circle. You can also see that the recommended resolution is 1440x900.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6057/6261682394_a1e75e8df1_z.jpg This picture is also more obvious that you can't see the "shadow" of the word THINK.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/6261682108_022a201be8_z.jpg

Hello, I am running into trouble trying to access any menu option in the BIOS for my E520 to enable 64-bit virtualization (both VMware and VirtualBox) and therefore I cannot install 64-bit guests on my Windows 7 Professional host machine. The BIOS I am currently running is the one the machine was shipped with (8HET38WW 1.20 9/9/2011 - though Lenovo online documentation lists a date a couple weeks later, but whatever) and reading through the BIOS updates released since then I see no option being added that addresses enabling 64-bit virtualization to justify an update of my BIOS (which I'd rather do as a last resort as everything else runs just fine). Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to how I might enable 64-bit virtualization on my ThinkPad Edge E520? Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't have an Edge machine, but I know for the other late model ThinkPads they put the virtualization settings in the Security area of the BIOS.

3 days ago I purchased an edge E520 1143 AK7. I installed Windows Home Basic on it and then updated it to latest date upgrades. Then I installed all the drivers and Thinkvantage ulitiies. The machine is just amazing. However, the bluetooth hardware itself is not found on the machine. The vendor who sold me the machine was very cooperative. He booted another machine to find out if a bluetooth exists on the machine or not. Unfortunately, even the service center person is facing the same problem. luetooth not found. I doubted that my machine either does not have a Bluetooth OR it is a manufacturing defect. I called Lenovo service center and they confirmed that my model DOES SUPPORT A HIGH SPEED BLUETOOTH. Manufacturing defect is ruled out as a second machine is also having the same problem. Therefore, I am doing something wrong. Some driver seems to be missing. Can anyone please help me with the issue?

Laptop was sitting plugged in for 3 months (no power surges).  I opened the screen today and it appeared to be in sleep mode with the red Thinkpad light slowly pulsing.  I also noticed a clicking noice in the machine with each flash of the red light.  When I pressed the power button, the machine would not power up.  After eventually holding it down, the pulsing red light went away altogether.  Power cord and battery have been checked and are good.  Power source is good.  Performed static electricity removal multiple times and machine will still not power up.  It seems like it is a motherboard problem noted on this board multiple times.  But, I am intrigued by the pulsing red light initially observed.  Any thoughts?  BTW  - I am not a "computer guy", so keep the lingo to a 5th grade level!  Thanks in advance for any help.

The Lenovo supplied drivers for the Radeon 6630M installed in the E520 haven't been updated since early 2012. Meanwhile ATI released v14 of the drivers just a few months ago (mid 2014). The E520 is now 5 versions behind with it's drivers, and the ATI supplied driver is incompatible. Does Lenovo have any intention of releasing a compatible version of the latest drivers for the 6630M or are we supposed to muddle along without further support for this piece of hardware?

Hi guys,  I would like to ask a question about re-flashing latest BIOS on my Edge E520 1143-37G laptop. At the moment I am using version 8HET41WW (1.23) - from 13.1.2012. I updated it to the 8HET43WW (1.25) few days ago, but I had a problems with entering Boot order menu by pressing "Enter" - it didn't work and it booted directly to Windows 7. I had another problems like - asking for a password at reboot (and I have set it to not to ask for it at reboot in BIOS menu) and few other problem. So yesterday I re-flash it back to the older version 8HET41WW (1.23) but problems persist.  Is there a way to manually reflash it with winflash.exe, please? And what should I choose in "Specify new BIOS file" in winflash.exe? Is it file "$0A8H000.FL1" from "8HET43WW" folder? And in "Advanced" option of winflash.exe, what flags should I check? Thank you for your replies. Regards,Dan

HiI installed Corsair 4GB PC10666 1333mhz DDR3 SODIMM into my ThinkPad Edge E520 (model1143-3FU) but it isn't showing up in the system properties.  The machine is running Windows 7 Prof 64 bit and the specs show 8GB as the max memory supported so I am not sure what the deal is. Has anyone had this issue?  Any thoughts about how to fix it?Thanks

Answer:RAM added to ThinkPad Edge E520 not showing in system properties?

You might have to buy a 8gb kit with two 4gb sticks for it to work. Some memory modules just dont play well together, eventhough they are of the same brand. if you buy a kit they are tested to work together. That might not mean that it will work for your machine though. A quick call to Lenovo suport might get you in the right direction. GL!

Answer:Brightness problem in ThinkPad Edge E420 & E520 Series.

I understand your frustration, have you checked to see if your BIOS is up-to-date?

There is a BIOS update that came out in Nov 2012, it includes a fix for the issue of brightness keys (F7 & F8).

Please let me know how this goes and if you have any questions.

Hi, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 for about 3 years now, and i have a problem that i can't solve for about almost a year. I've been searching for help on another forum, but with no luck so i decided that i might get some help here. I have two switchable graphics card in my laptop - AMD Radeon HD 6630M and Intel Graphics 3000. The thing is, that im currently running on Intel card for that year. One day, when i ran a game, it worked good for a while, and then i got huge FPS drop. When i restarted PC, ran a game, any game, it went fine for a while and again after few minutes i got FPS drop. So i opened my laptop, looked inside, and cleaned it from dust. After i put it all together, it worked like a charm. But only for a few days. Then, while playing a game, i got BSOD. Since then, i can't install ANY AMD driver. Just can't. Whenever i try, i get BSOD during installation. I thought that a new windows install might solve the problem so when the chance appeared, i downloaded windows 10. It didn't solve the problem. I tried every option i had, i even did a clean factory install - like if i bought it, no programs, no documents, nothing. Unfortunatelly, that didn't work either. I thought that when i opened the laptop all those months ago, i might screw something up. So i opened it again today, but i never dissamblley it completely, not then, not now. And there was nothing about the graphics card i could screw up. I didn't even see it. So i'm really desprate, i tried everything, i... Read more

Windows 10 isn't supported on E520 and doesn't support the hybrid driver. There won't be any future update for the driver which hasn't been updated in 3 years.

Hello guys, In december 2011, my Lenovo-monitor got replaced, by a new one, cause of weird scratches, and other things on the screen. Since a week of two, I can see a dead pixel in the right upper corner. So I called Lenovo, with the request, to replace this screen, because they had put a new one on it, and this new one, has this dead pixel. I don't think, that is any of my fault? That's what I said to the man, he answerred, I'm sorry, but if you don't have 3 or more pixels we won't replace it for you. First I was trilled with the Lenovo service, they replaced my screen, after they had seen on the photo's, the weird scratches and spots on it. But now, i'm slightly dissapointed. So I have to hope, that there will come more dead pixels? That's ridiculous. I have 'Business day-on site warranty' untill the summer of 2013.  With kind regards, Helder

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520, dead pixel, since last repair

Hi Helder,

Sorry to hear about the defective pixel, but the support agent didn't lie to you, Lenovo's Dead Pixel Policy is that three or more pixels need to be defective. This is actually less than the policy the display manufacturers stipulate or was in force 5 years ago.

I know this may not be what you wanted to read, but please take a look at this site which illustrates that Lenovo is not alone in having a policy of this kind.

hey alli have a wedding coming up and want to play my itunes playlists from my lenovo thinkpad edge e520 laptop to my stereo, did a little reseach and seems i need "male stereo 1/8-inch plug to two male RCA plugs" and simply run this from my soundcard output to my stereo.  this laptop has a Combo audio jack - can i run the cable from this?  reading it only says its a microphone output? if i cant run from this is there any other solutions.. would appreciate a quick reply ??

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 - Connect laptop to Stereo question?

yes you can, with the cable you got it won't act as the Mic cable, so it will only output the stereo sound that you need.

Hi guys. I bought a Thinkpad Edge E520 a while ago. It's a great piece of kit but I feel it's let down by the screen. The viewing angles are very bad as is the contrast. Is it possible to swap out the screen for a more high end one? I don't want to use an external monitor, oh and the screen is matte which is fine...it's just the atrocious viewing angles and sub par contrast.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520 Screen Viewing Angle

You may or may not be able to shim in the 15.6" 1920x1080 panel from the T520/W520.Of course, it'd void your warranty. There are some color calibration tricks you can use so they'll appear to shift less as the viewer moves off angle. (Crushing the lighter colors may work, at a loss of contrast.)

I've been having this problem with the touchpad for some time now. I've updated the bios and installed the latest driver but for some reason the touchpad simply stops responding. The first sign of non-responsiveness is usually a failure to respond to commands to move the cursor and instead of moving the cursor it begins to scroll. Left and right click responsiveness is disabled or switched around and two finger scrolling is simply no longer functional. Restarting may resolve the issue for a brief period but problems begin to occur again pretty quickly. The trackpad nipple and buttons continue to work perfectly well and external mice are recognized and function normally.  My first suspicion is that this is NOT a hardware issue. Why? I have uninstalled all UltraNav drivers which has reduced the touchpad functionality to the basics such as moving the cursor, tapping and left and right button clicking. I really miss two finger scrolling but for the past two months I have experienced no loss of functionality whatsoever. In other words, the touchpad works perfectly fine with basic functionality until I install the driver for it. This is very annoying and dissapointing as it suggests to me that Lenovo have been incapable of developing a functional driver for my product which is the least one can expect. I do hope I get some replies to this post.

The 5, 4, 2, 1, 0 and Numeric Enter key on the Lenovo numeric keypad itself works only half the time (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't). When I use an external keyboard, there isn't any problems. I just got this computer about 2 weeks ago too.

I could have sworn this laptop had Bluetooth on it, at one point.  However, if I press the F9 button, nothing happens.  I have looked in the device manager, and I can see no reference to Bluetooth.  Tried downloading from the website the Bluetooth software, ThinkPad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software, just as it gets to the end of the installation process it says there is no Bluetooth device. Thanks in anticipation for any help offered.

I really hope somebody to offer here a solution for the following problem. Today morning I start the ThinkVantageSystem update to check for new versions of drivers. Till then i had the older version of System update 4.01... after I start it, the application told there is a new version and it must be installed and the program will now close and install the new version of TVSU - 4.03.0007. Well all OK..it was installed started checked and after I closed it. This evening I open it to see what it offers me among the optional updates and...crash! Message: "ThinkVantage system update has stopped working....windows is checking for a solution to the problem" ....and this is non-stop. I uninstall it, ccleaner, restarted after install and uninstall...nothing. All stays the same. I'm using Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. Here are the complete details of the model I own.Another question if somebody got a clue on this problem. Google chrome bugging on some videos in youtube (only some). It shows a black screen but the audio goes ok. Even when you hover the mouse on that black screen I can click on links or buttons inside. It is a kind of known bug and I searched a lot but nothing helped till the moment. Any suggestions?

Hi, Just wondering if someone could help out/advise what to do next with my power issue. Story is;Laptop was connected to power when power surge happened. It cannot turn on at all. I have reset the power dio within the laptop with no success, whether the battery is in or not it still will not turn on. I have replaced the power adapter and have also tested that the power adapter is getting it's full 20V when testing with a meter. I have just replaced the DC-IN card on the laptop (card that power adapter directly plugs into inside laptop) and still no power. I have also tried to test the power button connection to the DC-IN card with no power there aswell. Not too sure if this only gets power if the computer is on? Anyway. I want to try to get around NOT replacing the motherboard as it is pretty expensive and I dont have any warranty on the laptop at present. Looking for answers on here before I go the long yard awaiting for answers for days or even months like before when I have rung customer service. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Answer:Lenovo Edge E520 in Power Surge

so what happens when you plug the power adapter into the laptop, does any of the LED light come on?

Answer:Wireless 5GHZ bandwidth range support in ThinkPad Edge E520? Answer: NO

Thanks for this info.  I've been having a problem with my wireless connection that I think might be related to this -- your input would be much appreciated. Computer: Thinkpad Edge E520, i5, 500GB, 4GB RAM, Intel WiFi Link 1000 wireless card; running Windows 7 Basically, if I'm in the same room as the router, I get wireless connection, and it's fine.  If I round the corner into the hallway and beyond, I can see the network, but no connectivity.  I've done the whole "updating to most current driver" business, as well as everything that Lenovo support told me to do.  I reset my router (not that I thought that was the problem, since 2 other laptops in the apartment get a connection no problem, and I also couldn't connect to a network at a coffee shop...) then even uninstalled the ThinkVantage Access Connections just in case it and Windows were fighting over who gets to control my internet connection.  Finally, after all this, Lenovo sent me a replacement wireless card (same one) under warranty, so I replaced the card -- no dice. I finally changed my router settings to WPA2 AES, and this has improved the situation *slightly* -- I can now connect, but so extremely slowly that it's useless. Do you think that the fault lies with the card and its inability to tap the 5gHz spectrum?

I'm planning on upgrading my existing 320Gb internal hard drive to a 1Tb Internal Hard Drive. Would a 1Tb Hard Drive with a SATAII Interface be the correct one to use. Can anyone suggest what is the easiest way of replacing this drive? Kind Regards, Simon Thwaites

Answer:Re: Upgrading Internal Hard Drive (Thinkpad Edge E520 Model Number 1143CTO)

just remove the bottom plate, and remove the hdd from the laptop (held down by two screws) to the laptop chassis. The hdd is in a caddy held down by 4 screws. As long as the hdd is 2.5 inch and 9.5 mm thick then you would be okay. The SATA interface is SATAIII (6.0 Gbps), which can operate at SATAI and SATAII mode, depending on the hdd you have.

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing £25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 i5 Laptops with Windows 7 - Dead Laptop with Battery Problems

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

Hey all, I've been having an issue with my Edge E520 in which I have to either press the start button several times, or apply some series pressure to the button, to get the system to boot up.  Once started everything is fine.  This leads me to think the power button board (the small circuit board underneath the actual power button) may need to be replaced.  I've tracked down a suitable replacement board online, but I'm curious as to how difficult it would be to strip the laptop down to the point that I could actually access the old board.  I know how to remove the keyboard, but the button (and presumably the power button board it sits on top of) isn't embedded in the keyboard but the surrounding 'super-structure'.  Is there a relatively non-destructive way to pry the plastic casing surrounding the keyboard away from the chassis? Any ideas, suggestions, or alternate theories as to what the problem might be would be greatly appreciated.

Really need help with my brand new E520 screen display setting. Many thanks. Just got this online ordered laptop yesterday. Hi there,My Lenovo Thinkpad E520 is not booting up and it keeps powering up and shutting down every 5 seconds. The red light blinks and goes off each time and I can hear the fan booming and dying. There is no display at all. I updated the BIOS and it failed the previous night. This laptop has no warranty and need some help.Is there any way that I can manually re-write the BIOS to the chip via EEPROM writer? ( assuming the issue is with the BIOS)Any other rules of thumb that might work on this other than replacing the motherboard? Or is the motherboard repairable?CheersMJ.

It doesn't even show the light when I plug in the power cord, and the cord works fine on another thinkpad. I've tried taking out the battery and alterating holding down the power button for a second 10 times then holding it down for thirty seconds and starting it up with and without the battery, plugged in and not. This is the second time this has happened to me with . The first time they replaced the motherboard and palm rest. I thought it was an isolated thing and the service was great when it was under waranty so I continued to recomend thinkpad computers.  My previous thinkpad is still working 8 years after I bought it. Now my warranty has expired, the exact same problem has struck again, and I'm reading all over that I'm basically SOL.  I've barely owned this computer for 1 year.  If this means the computer is shot, it works out to me having paid 43 bucks a month for it. Is there anyone I can try to contact at lenovo or should I just move onto a new brand and start warning others of thinkpad's sharp decline in reliability?

Answer:Thinkpad E520 won't charge or power on
