Thinkpad edge e430 ethernet problem

Question: Thinkpad edge e430 ethernet problem

Hello everybody, this is my first post here as I just bought an Edge e430 from Lenovo. It came with Win 8 installed (let's skip this) and as I tried to connect to the LAN for verifying the license I realized that I did not have any network connection. No way to connect, no matter what I clicked and what I switched on/off.... no connection (even the local one). As I am a Linux user, after figuring out how to boot from CD I tried Linux on a Live CD to see whether it was a Win 8 issue or a card one. No connection there too. Trying to set up here and there I think I grasped the problem, however I does not make any sense to me. Is it possible that the new model is IPv6 only (with no IPv4 retrocompatibility). If this is the case (I repeat: it doesn't make sense) what should I do to make it working, at least in Win 8? Thank you very much for your time. P.S. Forgot to say that I don't have any WiFi to try.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad edge e430 ethernet problem

Ok, I see no reply but I keep updating the problem. I took the pc to work, connected the cable and.... tada! Connection working! I am actually posting it from the Linux live CD. The question is, why my home LAN isn't working??? I used it for over one year and had (at least) 5 different laptops connected without the smallest glitch. Any ideas?

I've had this Thinkpad Edge E430 since 2012 and have loved it, but recently I've been having a problem with it. In order to start it up I have to start it at least twice, and now it seems that the AC adapter must be plugged in for it to start. What will happen the first time or when it's just running on the battery is that the red indicator light will turn on, and I will hear the fan and the harddrive start up, but the screen will remain black and the computer will not respond to anything. When I have it plugged in and try the second time, it will start up no problem, and there doesn't seem to be any response issues once the laptop is up and running. I thought it might be a battery problem, but it has the same start up issues when I took out the batter and just had the AC adapter plugged in. Any ideas what this might be?

My laptop thinkpad Edge e430 is not powering up. When I plug in the AC cord the LED indicator does not turn on. I have checked the AC adapter with the multimeter and it gives 20 volt output. So the AC adapter is fine.  The laptop also does not power on with a fully charged batter. I have removed the HDD, Memory, Optical drive and the CMOS battery and then pressed the power button for 30 seconds. The laptop does not wake up.  It is quite weird as the laptop should show some kind of error So i may have an idea what is happening.  Discussing with people on other forums gives me an idea that the power setup of the laptop is faulty. Can some body here guide me to what the problem is and how can i fix it?

Hi, I would like to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad. There are pretty good offers at the Outlet. I am not sure about the model that I should get. I am deciding between the L430 and the E430. While I have a preference for the L430, I have some concerns/questions: Regardless of the model choice, will a 14inch screen be enough for school and other stuff like watching movies? What are the advantages of the E430? Some models are priced higher than the L430. Background:I currently have a 15.6inch laptop. I think I want a smaller one as I need to carry my computer to school. The 15.6 inch is pretty heavy. However, I am very used to that format and a bit scared that a 14inch might be too small. E.g. if I work with Excel, Word, or Outlook. Although the L430 seems to be the more robust computer with the better specifications as compared to the E430, the L430 looks a bit old and it might not be as good as e.g. for watching movies. I want to use my computer both for school and free time. Thanks for your help! Yellow Squash

I've just upgrade my e430 to Windows 8 and realize, that two USB 3.0 not working with USB 3.0 device (like flash disk or external hard drive). Device is recognized but not shown as drive, so I've no access to them.I've read some articles, that Win 8 should have native support for USB 3.0 so am I missing something? And should this be somehow connected with my internal card reader not working? I can see, that Lenovo yet not release drivers for it, but... Thanks for answers.

Hi,I am looking to buy a lenovo laptop with the intention of using it mostly for word/excel applications, internet browsing and skype, and basic multimedia tasks (online video streaming, movies). The laptop's emissions (noise/heat) are key for me and by looking online, the E335 version seemed to be praised for its very low emissions and its low price. The only drawback is that it has the AMD E2 2000 processor, which performs much lower than its intel i3 counterparts.I wanted to check for your experience with the emissions of the E335, and whether the weaker processor would play a role in the performance of the laptop for the basic tasks intended. Also, I wanted to ask whether choosing the E430 version with intel i3 and would result in any drawbacks in terms of emissions. Thanks!loukianos

Answer:Choice between ThinkPad Edge E335 and E430

Hello. This is all a matter of budget and taste, plain and simple. In my experience, the AMD mobile APU's simply aren'ton par with the performance of the Core-i processors, and even when running the same clock speed as theirIntel counterparts, they run hotter, sometimes much hotter. They are a budget option though, and as such I guessthey will do their job adequately. Here is a comparison for the AMD E2-2000 vs the Intel i3-3110M Ivy Bridge. AMD E2-2000 vs Intel Core i3-3110M The difference is vast when it comes to available features and performance, but the AMD uses much less power, but that will be very apparent in its performance and will be a huge factor in how long the machine will last for youbefore you need to update it. My 2 cents is always go with the Intel Core-i option. They are very energy efficient, specially since the Ivy Bridgearchitecture was introduced, and the smallest i3's really are a powerful option for a day-to-day machine. And themachines that come with them aren't so much more expensive than the AMD powered machines. Lastly, have you checked out the new E440 models? The Haswell line of Intel CPU's is much more energy efficientthan the earlier Ivy Bridge models. ThinkPad E440 Laptop Cheers!

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 and it was working fine until today. Today I worked on the laptop as usual and just turned off the Fast Startup setting in the Windows 8 and then restarted the computer. Now it only shows a black screen (LCD backlights are on but there is nothing on the screen). I hear the usual BIOS beep sound but I can't see the BIOS screen or the Windows. I've tried to connect to a an external monitor via HDMI. Amazingly, both my laptop's screen and external monitor works fine when the laptop is connected to the external screen. But when I disconnect them, again I can only see the black screen. I turned on the Fast Startup settings in Windows 8, but it didn't work. Then I loaded the default settings from the BIOS and it didn't worked too. Finally I've installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS to test if it is because of the operating system but it didn't help too. I've tried all of this using the laptop's screen while it was connected to the external screen. It is very confusing for me. It seems like the screen is only working when an external screen is also connected to the laptop. I would be very happy if anyone can help me about this problem.

Or this software  just doesn't function correctly on my computer, and if it does is malfunctioned, what I'm I supposed to do to fix it? Thank you...

Oh,and here is another thing that I noticed. A couple of days ago, I deleted the hibernation partition on my SSD drive because it takes up 8gb of storage, and seldom do I use hibernation. But I noticed that after I deleted the partition, my computer's boot up time seems to be slower than before, does that partition has some thing to do with boot up time?

Hi everyone,About a year and a half ago I bought a ThinkPad Edge E430 and its been working fine, until last week when I got a terrible virus which really corrupted my computer. I've managed to remove the malware, but as a result the registry is still damaged. I cannot change folder options, my start menu is blank, all my files have been moved to a TEMP file among all these other issues. I've run multiple malware scanners and registry repair programs but these issues aren't resolving. So I'm thinking that I'll need to just reinstall windows 7, to completely repair the registry and ensure everything is back to normal. I've backed up all my files, but my concern is about the reinstallation itself. How could I do this when Windows 7 came preloaded onto the laptop, so I don't have the installation disk. And would the product key for windows 7 (found under the battery) definitely work a second time around?

Answer:Windows 7 reinstallation - ThinkPad Edge E430

Hi Cosmos29,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that your query is about reinstalling the Windows 7 OS on ThinkPad Edge E430.
When your computer is working normally, press the blue ThinkVantage button to launch the SimpleTap Program (for Windows 7) or the ThinkVantage Productivity Center program (for Windows XP and WindowsVista).

Note:
Depending on the date when your computer was manufactured, your computer might have the
Lenovo ThinkVantage Toolbox program preinstalled instead of the Simple Tap program or the ThinkVantage Productivity Centre program.

You also can use the ThinkVantage button to interrupt the start-up sequence of your computer and start the Rescue and Recovery workspace, which runs independently of the Windows operating system and is hidden from it. If the Windows operating system is not running properly, the Rescue and Recovery workspace can help you do the following:

? Get the current system information.
? Rescue a file from your Windows environment or restore back-up files, provided you have made backups
by use of the Rescue and Recovery program.
? Configure your computer or start the ThinkPad Setup.
To access the Rescue and Recovery workspace, turn on the computer; then, while the ?To interrupt normal start-up, press the blue ThinkVantage button? message is displayed at the lower-left of the screen, press the ThinkVantage button. The Rescue and Recovery screen opens. For additional information, see ?Us... Read more

Hi, I recently bought a 300Mbps Wireless N Router (TP-Link TL-WR841ND), but I only get 72 Mbps speed on my Thinkpad E430 laptop. As far as I read, the 1x1 11b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter only supports speeds up to 150 Mbps (which would still be ok with me), but instead I get 72 Mbps. I tried to tweak the adapter and router settings, but I had no luck. Do I need to change the Wireless adapter? Is it possible to change it, or should I use an external USB Wireless adapter instead? Thank you!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E430 Wireless speed only 72Mbps

Hi Tudorc,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would suggest you to check if any other similar device is able to achieve better speeds.

Log to the router's configuration utility by typing its IP address into a browser and change the encryption settings to WPA2 Encryption Only. Choose 40MHz-wide channels in the router?s configuration utility.

Since you are using a 1x1 single-stream card, so a max of 150Mbps is theoretically said to achieve. In addition, you are only on the 2.4GHz band, which is often congested, so you may see lower speeds. The disparity between theoretical and practical Wi-Fi performance comes from network protocol overhead, radio interference, physical obstructions on the line of sight between devices, and distance between devices. Under ideal conditions, actual results for a wireless adapter rated at 150Mbps is perhaps in the range of 50-80Mbps.

Hope this provided enough clarity for your query!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hi, I recently bought some Thinkpad EDGE E430 and E530 for my company. But one of them, at the first boot, instead of showing the first time Windows setup wizard it booted to Windows login with an already defined user named 'obe' and it ask for a password. I can't enter to Windows. I have tried to make 'factory settings' for resintalling Windows but the System Recovery Options always ask me for the password of 'obe' user. I called Lenovo support and the agent told me to use another E430 to produce a recovery DVD, so I made it (because I bought more E430 in the same order), but is the same, always asking for the password. Please see the picture. I need to give the laptop to one of my employees, he is goint to travel this next weekend and he need to take this laptop to the trip.

Answer:New Thinkpad Edge E430 came with a Windows user and cannot login (who is 'obe' ???)

welcome to the community. press F1 when the first splash screen appears to get into bios. make sure that the cd/dvd drive is listed first in the boot order (or usb cd/dvd, if your machine doesn't have an internal). then put the recovery dvd in the drive and reboot the machine. it should load the recovery process from the dvd, rather than any hdd partition, and allow you to recover/reimage the machine. please post back if this doesn't work or if you have further ?s. cheers.

Hello to all, new one here to the forum. Well, title says it all... At first I think it was a problem with the way Linux suspends the machine, but now I realize it happens too when I suspend from Windows (I have dual boot with Windows 7 and Linux Mint 17 actually). It started making it sometimes, not always, but now always happens: I suspend, close the lid and put the notebook on my bag. Hours or even minutes later, when I want to use it again and open the lid, its shuts off right at that very moment. If I suspend and 2 minutes later resume with the notebook still on the table, everything goes fine... so I suspect it may be a time thing or bad contact with the battery, but really don't know. I'm reticent to bring it to tech service because of several reasons, so I want to share this and hope to hear if someone had the same problem and how fixed it, if it can be fixed. Oh, and sorry for my perhaps strange english, I'm argentinian.

I've tried to wait, even from one day to another, and the message remains there. After forcing to close this message window, the speakers figure between the bluetooth devices, but when trying to connect an "error establishing connection" message appears.I've tried to install the other driver available on the support site (an intel, this one is a Broadcom) with no results.Appreciate your help, as i'm seriusly thinking (don't want to) on replace the laptop. Best regards.

Hi, I was wandering about replacing my current cpu with something more powerful. I-3110m is ok but, i'm doing some work in Matlab and Solidworks, and sometimes my cpu chokes. The only thing that stops me from buying new cpu is heating of new cpu. i3-3110m is 35W TDP, so as i7-3612/32QM but they are incredibly hard to find in good prices. on the other hand there is i7-3610Qm which is easily found but runs on 45W TDP. Question is: How much hotter can my laptop get? Maybe someone has E430 with i7-3610qm?

I read through the manual and am confident that I can take apart the machine, replace the cracked screen and put it back together. I replaced hinges in my old HP and a motherboard in my friends HP. My father was able to get me a great deal on this machine I have now. I put in some extra ram and a 32gb SSD for RapidBoot and I'm pretty much in love. I take great care of it but had an accident and dropped/cracked the screen.

The laptop was ordered custom so its a bit more of a challenge to find specific information on what the part #'s are. The laptop has working microphones but was not purchased with a webcam which I regret. I would like to replace the LCD panel and install an integrated camera in one fell swoop.

My questions are: What model number of LCD panel so I need. What model number of camera do I need. And lastly, will I need to purchase a new LCD cable that has the ability to plug into the camera? Or does my current LCD cable have a lone male cable plug waiting for a camera?

Machine Type: 3254
Serial #: xxxxxxx
CPU: i5-3210
HDD: 7200rpm 320gb
Came with 4gb of RAM

Thanks so much! Any advice here would be appreciated

Hi, I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254 T1Q laptop, I need suitable Wireless (Wifi) driver. My OS is Windows 7 64 bitUltimate. I tried with many drivers, but no use. Please help me. Thanks in advance. -Thiyagarajan

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254 T1Q - Need suitable wifi driver

Hey there thiyagarajaner,

I believe you are using the ThinkPad 11b/g/n 1x1 WiFi card. Have you tried using the System Update Tool? This typically will instal the drivers that match your system. Hope this helps.

As an alternative there is also this driver, that may work in the even that the one from Broadcom does not.

Is this purely an option or is it standard?? I sort of get the impression it is standard when you read the marketing bumf, but on the shopping sites I have visited they list it as Fast Ethernet only 100Mb/s. Are there specific model numbers that contain gigabit ethernet?  I have been looking at the Intel version with 13.3" screen, and when I look at AMD version, it does seem to have ethernet.  Is it only the Intel 13.3" that does not have gigabit then???  Or is it only 14/15" models that have gigabit?

Answer:gigabit ethernet on Thinkpad Edge Intel 13.3"?

Go to Support and Downloads and enter the 7 character part number in the Quick Path.  Look for 1 Gb Ethernet in the description. Gigabit Ethernet is available in both AMD and Intel configurations on the Edge 13 (see the Personal Systems Reference).  The driver package for the Edge 13 does refer to either a Gigabit Ethernet or Fast Ethernet controller.

Answer:Battery Threshold Problem On Thinkpad E430

It does appear that you have a good working knowledge of the Battery Reset Function.  But if all the steps are followed it should have resolved your issue.  I am listing the steps for resetting the Battery Gauge and I would like for you walk through the steps one more time.  If this does not work then we can look  a little deeper to find the issue.

Resetting the battery gauge
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/diagnose-and-fix/detail.page?DocID=HT003431#reset

After the battery firmware is updated, the full charge capacity will be reset to the battery's design capacity. Because of this, it is recommended that a battery fuel gauge reset be performed after the update is complete. This will update the full charge capacity to an accurate value. If this is not done, the battery may report a sudden drop in the estimates of remaining percentage and remaining time once the battery is nearly empty even after updating the firmware. To perform the fuel gauge reset:

Start Power Manager by double-clicking the fuel gauge displayed in the lower right portion of the screen.
Select Advanced in Switch to: view.
Click the Battery tab.
Click Battery maintenance.
Click Perform Reset.
Follow the instructions on the screen.

After the reset is complete, the battery gauge will be calibrated.
If Power Manager is not installed or no Battery Maintenance button is available in Power Manager, the battery gauge can be reset by the following instructions.

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E440Windows 7 Professional 64 bit I just purchased the computer yesterday and, given a rather unstable wi-fi connection at my temporary residence, I tried to connect the computer to via the ethernet connection. Upon connecting, I lose all internet access. My older dell laptop operates nigh flawlessly on this connection, so it is something computer-side. Despite the fact that the connection shows as having internet access and the fact that I can pull up the full connection map (which is displaying all other computers on the LAN through to the internet connection) the minute I try to access the internet, nothing is able to load. This is the case for both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer, as well as any background downloads, such as Steam. As for the lights beside the ethernet jack on the computer: the green is lit solid, and the yellow flashes intermittently. I have updated the driver for the ethernet adapter, but the problem remains. I also installed Access Connections just to see if it might let me view a little more information about the connection (its connection test, though it shows having internet connection, fails), but I am unfamiliar with the program and do not know if it is helping or hindering me in this regard. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Edit: Since then, I have attempted connecting to the internet via Safe Mode, with both windows and norton firewalls turned off. No luck. I don't have another et... Read more

Hello Lenovo community! I've had a Thinkpad for years now - it's old enough it still says IBM Thinkpad - and it's time for a new computer, so I'll be ready against the sad day this one can't handle what I need anymore. I've narrowed it down to two Thinkpads, but I can't decide between them or see what the differences between them are. Perhaps someone here knows? The two are the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 627156U and the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430 3254AEU. They both have 4 gigs of RAM and 500 gigs of Hard Drive space, though I think the 56U has a chiclet keyboard and the AEU has beveled. Does anyone know if the 56U has a full sized keyboard despite being chiclet? (I'm a writer, so the keyboard is a deal maker or breaker. It's also why I'm looking at 14" screens - all the 15.6" ones have that number pad and the keyboard shoved to the side. All I can see is that the keyboards are "Spill resistant", which doesn't tell me the size of the keys.)Does anyone have any knowledge of these two machines? Or even opinions on the two?

Answer:What's the difference? Thinkpad E430 56U vs Thinkpad E430 AEU

Hey there ChangelingChild,

I found this threadhere that may of be some interest to you. I see in the PSRef that both machines you are looking at come with a 6-row, spill resistant, multimedia FN keys keyboard. Where are you seeing a beveled keyboard? Generally they are island style/chiclet full sized keyboards. I'm certain some our E430 users should have some feedback as well.

E430: 6271-56U
i5-3210M(2.5Ghz), 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HD, 14in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD 4000 Graphics, CDRW/DVDRW, 802.11bgn wireless,Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 64

It looks like the Primary difference between the machines lay with the processor, it's compatibility with RAM modules, and the integrated graphics. The 3210M appears to out perform the 2450M but you will need to take a look at this and see for yourself of the impact to your day to day performance/usage. You can see more indepth information when looking at the PSRef and comparing the two.

I hope this provides some information to help guide you in your decision. Good Luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

So I got a iTunes update a couple months ago. While I don't really like the new iTunes my more pressing problem is that it seems to be affected by the Smart Audio Driver and/Or the Dolby equalizer app. I tried the new driver from Lenovo but it does not seem to fix the iTunes issue which is iTunes freezes if I open either the Smart audio or the Dolby app. I tried to uninstall the Lenovo Conexant driver combo which unistalls both the Smart audio App and the Dolby App. Then allowing Windows to install a basic driver. Which does solve the iTunes freeze ups. What is troubling is that without that Dolby equalization the audio quality is dreadfully bad and worse yet even with decent headphone the fequency range is very poor. I guess I know now why the Dolby app is included. It makes a bad sounding audio chip sound better. My question is weather its worth trying a different driver to imporve sound? Or just wait for maybe a iTunes update or a Lenovo driver update that may fix the issues. I know that the Thinkpad line is not exsactly for audiophiles. But I was surprised the quality was not a little better.

I was wondering if someone could help me with this... Recently I noticed that the AES-NI feature of the Core i5-3210M processor in my ThinkPad Edge E430 is not being detected by the operating system. I remember that, when I first got my computer, AES-NI was being recognized by other applications, like CPU-Z and TrueCrypt. However, since then I updated my BIOS to version 2.04, upgraded to Windows 8 and rolled back to 7, only to discover that AES-NI is no longer available. I tried upgrading to BIOS v. 2.08, but that didn't help. I also booted from a Linux live USB, and AES-NI is not detected either. Is there anything I can try? The only thing I can think of is rolling back the BIOS to an old version. Would that be worth the trouble? Or should I just contact Support?

Answer:Scrolling issue on trackpad - Edge E430

Hi, Hariharan

I would firstly make sure that the BIOS have been updated. The computer may be new, but sometimes the latest BIOS is not the one installed at the beginning. You can find the latest BIOS here.

I would then go to the Control Panel and select Mouse. There should be a new window with a tab on the right called UltraNav. I would check the settings of the device here and make sure that everything is set as it should be. This section allows you to configure other actions of the TrackPad, such as scrolling, tapping, swiping, etc.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

I have an Ubuntu VM on my Thinkpad E430 I would like to occasionally use.  There seems to be a problem with allowing the VM to access multiple cores.  I have the latest BIOS according to the update utility.  In BIOS, I cannot find any way to enable/disable VT-x.  According to Oracle, features are locked or unavailable in MSR.

Answer:Edge E430 BIOS update to allow multiple core access to VMs

I have the ability to enable/diable virtualization in my bios.  If I am not mistaken, this is one of the few computers where it is set on by default. Under ubuntu do  $ grep -E avx /proc/cpuinfo If there is a highlighted avx, it is already turned on.  Though I am not sure if this will work under virtualbox.   If you are using ubuntu anyway, why not use WUBI?  It basically installs ubuntu as a normal application in windows.  You may even get better performance that way.

Hi All, I just bought a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E430(3254-1B6) but I am not able to turn it on if I install the battery and even I am not able start it on direct power supply using the adaptor(After removing the battery). My Vendor told me to charge the battery for 12 hours. My vendor also told me that ThinkPad laptop does not start without battery. Please let me know what may be the actual problem with my laptop.

Answer:Not able to turn on Thinkpad E430

Hi, charankalcut

If the machine will not start when the AC adapter is plugged in with or without the battery, and there are no lights or sounds, then I think this system has a faulty systemboard.  One thing you can try is to remove the batter and the AC adapter from the machine and then hold down the power button for thirty seconds. This will remove all power from the machine. Once complete, put the battery back in, connect the AC adapter and try to turn it on again. If there are no lights, sounds, or other signs of power, then it sounds like a bad systemboard, in which case I would either contact the vendor or Lenovo support at 1800-3070-7555 or 1800-425-2666. Also, if plugged in, the system should be able to work without the battery.

Best,
Adam

You can run Microsoft Fixit and it will run a scan and prompt you to disable programs (it will list programs that that you can turn off) from running at startup or you can let it automatically select the startup programs that are slowing the process.

Hey all,For more than a month now, I've been experiencing a weird issue with my Thinkpad Edge 14, which displays itself as a weird screen flickering upon the computer being frozen (attached are pictures and a short video of the issue which is hard to describe). After which, I have to force shutdown the machine. Also, sometimes the issue displays itself as a blue screen and then reboots. Usually, after the shutdown/reboot, the computer doesn't boot, but rather turns the fan on high speed, but the screen remains black. After shutting down and turning the machine on again, the computer boots itself. At start, the problem used to only occur when running a heavy game like Civilization V, but not during regular use such as browsing, online video watching etc, so I wasn't really worried but still took the computer to a technician. With time, the problem grew worse and used to happen a few times a day, mainly while watching videos online via flash video viewers and similar usage. I have visited a computer technician who replaced the laptop's cooling system and fan. for a day or two, the machine worked fine, but with time, the problem came back, and has become worse. Now days the laptop is UNUSEABLE, even on simple use like facebook or simple web viewing freezes or displays the same symptoms. even upon not using the computer at all, and even while booting up or starting Windows ! I'll be happy to give more information as need. Hey So I've had my Thinkpad Edge 14 since the end of last summer.  I keep putting this off but now it has gotten to the point where I am sick of it.  Here is my problem: I plug my Thinkpad Edge 14 into the charger, which is obviously plugged into an outlet.  Usually it's while the system is still running but lately I've tried shutting it down first.  Now, about 1-2 minutes after I plug the laptop in, the CPU starts to FREAK OUT.  I have Rainmeter set up so I can keep track of my CPU/RAM/network and such.  So my little graph of my CPU starts to spike and it goes from 0% -> 26% -> 0% -> 78% -> 100% ->0% and so on and so forth.  This doesn't happen over time, this happens constantly.  The CPU just keeps jumping and dropping.  This kills my performance.  Everything becomes jumpy and slow.  Opening a folder or my browser (which should take 2 seconds, if that) now takes about a minute.  Before, I was able to just turn off my laptop and turn it back on, no problems.  Now, I turn it off and turn it on 3-4 times and it is still jumping so I just let it sit there till the machine is charged.  I've gotten into the habit of just charging it overnight just so I don't have to deal with it in the morning.  I haven't a clue what is wrong or how to stop it.  This also has nothing to do with going to the Task Manager and ending a few processes.  I've tried and it does nothing. I'm... Answer:Thinkpad E430 failed to power on

Not to be a Harbinger of ill-tidings, but this sounds similar to the wide-spread problems Lenovo had with the 420 and 520 series. I owned an Edge 520, which was subsequently replaced by lenovo with my current E530, after shipping the e520 machine to the service center in Tenn. 5 separate times. Rumor has it that the 420 and 520 suffered from a design flaw in their Systems-Board (Mother-Board), causing them to do-away with the 20's series and re-designing the Systems-Board of the 430 and 530 Series. I certainly hope that yours is an isolated case, and furthermore that it is easily remedied. This reply is basically an FYI, and I send it with hopes that when your system is repaired it never recurs. Every time I shut off my E520, I never knew if it would power-on the following day......fruhlpmd.......

Hi, syl4s

I did some research and found this thread that might be helpful. Another user had a similar issue, albeit with a different system. The solution that worked for this user was a power driver that needed updating. This links directly to the solution, though the entire thread has some good information. Updating the driver should work for you, but let me know just in case it doesn't.

Ordered from Lenovo and had the following upgrades added:1) 500GB HDD (7200 rpm?)2) intel Core i5 3200 or 3210 something...3) 16GB mSATA SSD4) Has windows 75) 8GB RAMI'm not sure what else, just wanted this thing to be speedy, but have optimum battery life. Everything seems to be going alright, and this is only the 3rd time I've turned it on. But I notice the task manager says it's running like 130 processes at startup and right now it's running 112 and that's about where it stays. I don't know a lot, but I do know that's quite a bit more than my old desktop and previous laptop ran at any point. On average, it stays at 3% CPU and 33% Physical memory. My main concern is a solid balance between peak performance and battery life. My old computer took nearly 6 minutes to boot up and that is no joke. This will be used mainly for school work, no games, movies, etc. just a lot of typing on a lot of papers and frequent access to online databases I use for research information.  My question to those who can help...Is there something I can do to lower the number of processes? Somewhere I can go to on here to check/uncheck the things that run on start-up so they don't always come on and stay on when I never use them? Are there programs pre-loaded on here that are unnecessary that could clean ... Read more

Answer:New ThinkPad E430 - well over 100 processes running

Good day and welcome to the community.

I have routinely checked the Blackviper site for information regarding Windows services and processes, from XP through Win7. I haven't played around enough with Win8 in this respect yet, though.

Most all Windows-specific items are explained well, and recommendations for optimal / safe settings are given. Even if you choose to make no changes to your configuration, there is a wealth of information for general consumption contained there. Please note that you may not find information regarding OEM-specific services or processes. If you have questions on those, please post them in the Community and, hopefully, members will be able to offer useful advice.

Disclaimer: I am not connected with the site in any way. It has just been one of my go-to resources over the years.

Regards.

I purchased the laptop in July 2012. From October 2013 onwards no display at times although there is power in the system. It happened intermittently. When there is display system performs perfect. Now for past 2 weeks there is no display although power is on. I am told that Graphics of NVidia in the particular model has some issue. Is it true? Since dispaly section is on motherboard the same has to be replaced. This is very costly as I have not gone for extened warranty.  I am totally confused, what is the solution?

Answer:Thinkpad E430 (3254D7Q) No display

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that display is not working properly in your Lenovo ThinkPad E430.

I would suggest you to perform Flee Power ? remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer. Put the system to sleep and check if it wakes up normally.

Try connecting to an external monitor and check if display comes properly in it. Swap the battery and AC adapter with a good known one if you can.

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,
Mithun.

The keyboard on my laptop will type any character i press for ever, wherever text can be entered. If i open up a browser, and the first thing i type is w it will keep going "wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww....." It does this with any key, that is a letter or a number. It does not stop unless i restart it. The only reason i typed this up is because i used a usb keyboard. It works fine unless i press any key on the laptop's keyboard.

Answer:Thinkpad E430 Keyboard typing by itself

The only thing I can think of, is try creating a new user and see if it happens there.  If it still does, make yourself a linux live cd, and see if it does it there.  If it does, then it is for sure the keyboard and warraty that sh*t!  If not it is software based, and you need to clean that computer!

What model of the E430 are you using? You should be able to find this information on the bottom of the machine (E430-XXX) Also, have you been able to connect with a wired connection?

Thanks in advance,

Hello, I just bought a new Lenovo Edge E430 laptop with intel i5 Ivy Bridge and I want to know how the battery must be formatted for the first time? How long it should stay plugged for a correctly charge and for working properly? The PC must be connected all the working time, or only when battery dies? Thank you.

Answer:Formatting the battery for ThinkPad E430

As with any Lithium Ion battery the best advice is to fully charge (100%) the battery first. Then use it at least once a month down to where the notebook will be forced into hibernation. Then fully charge it. Otherwise charge as needed. The problem is that if you don't do what I call a full drain/full charge your battery can develop early signs of not fully charging. Also it helps reset your battery meter to better estimate life. I use my E430 a lot on outlet power so I try and remember to sometimes work on battery for a while to do a full discharge and recharge.

HiI own a Thinkpad E430(type 3254). It's about 14 months old. Yesterday, it randomly started having an issue with it's keyboard. It acts like the enter key is continuously pressed, and about 1 sec after I hit any other key it stops. The enter key by itself has stopped working, and only shorts sometimes and results in a continuous press. As soon as i boot, enter input is given and normal startup gets interrupted. If i press any key, it's normal again until an OS loads. For example, if i boot into debian, line breaks get inserted between the console messages that are displayed until i press a key, and if i boot windows, it gets stuck at the login screen because enter is given without the correct password so it loops. This behavior also happens sometimes randomly while working normally. The keyboard hasn't even seen heavy usage, or any drink spills. I usually keep the laptop at my desk, and use an external keyboard. The last time I took it out was 2 weeks ago.  Has anyone faced this issue before? I doubt it can be a software issue, so do I need a new keyboard? Thanks for the assistance.

Answer:Thinkpad E430 Keyboard Issue

ook so no one knows or no one bothered. anyway, i solved it and i'll leave it here.i called up lenovo's helpline, and they told me to remove ac power and the battery, and then keep the power button pressed for 2x30 seconds. Apparently, that drain static charge on the motherboard. That helped but only for a few minutes. Last night, i drained out the battery to 5% and now the issue is gone. I've recharged to 100% and the system is normal. I don't know what caused this, but it might have something to do with the lenovo power manager, which i recently installed.

Hi, I've bought a brand new ThinkPad E430 (i3, 4 GB RAM) with Windows 8 64 bit preinstalled. While the machine works great (my only complaint is a short battery life - only 3 hours or so on "Balanced" plan with no serious tasks on), it doesn't want to connect to my Asus RT-G32 (Rev. B1) router (only B/G modes are supported). The router is 100% error free (I have several phones and computers on it and everything works fine), but my newest computer simply doesn't work with it. It does connect, but only "partly". Some websites work, but after a while, they stop working, and Gmail Talk and Skype, for example, never connect while on Wi-Fi (on cable, everything works flawlessly). I've tried just about every router setting (channels, wireless mode set to "54G only", changing from WPA to WPA2 login, etc.) and I've played with Win 8 cared settings (N mode disabled, only G mode enabled), but nothing seems to work for more than a few minutes. Now everything is back on default and I'm on cable again. Could somene please advise if there is anything else to try? Btw, I've connected the computer on N router at my girlfriends place, and it works good. It only refuses to work on my G router. Thanks and kind regards,Henrik

Answer:ThinkPad E430 - Can't Connect to a G Router

Hi, lemming2030

I would recommend to make sure that the drivers in your machine are up to date, particularly the wireless LAN and the BIOS. Having these updated may help your issue. All possible driver updates for your machine can be found here. You can use the dropdown menus to sort by device type and operating system to make searching faster.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes

So I had my laptop roughly three years now or so.. I think..  This year, the laptop has been responding badly. Keys aren't working (I would hit E and get "kipouyhf" or raise the volume or the D key would do ";///n,oju"). Had to go get an ext. keyboard.  Another issue is being unresponsive, I take there's some software corruption going on within the laptop that may be causing this issue. It would usually result in a force reboot by either taking out the battery or pressing power button.  According to my aunt who had purchased her laptop around the same time as mine, her laptop have the same issues as mine. So it's not just mine.  Any solutions?

Answer:Major problem with ThinkPad Edge 530

Did you make a 'factory recovery disk' using the Lenovo ThinkVantage tools when it was new? Well, if not I believe you can get one (maybe a small fee) from Lenovo.  The keyboard of the E530 is user replaceable although I don't know the cost. After removing the back cover the are only 2-3 screws necessary to remove it. After replacing the keyboard or living with the external one, you can reinstall the OS from a recovery disk. You'll also need to reinstall some device drivers and any applications you use.  These operations are mentioned in the current User Guide which is a download in the support section.  I find that reinstalling the OS every couple of years greatly improves overall performance. Of course, as I'm sure you realize computer repair over the internet is fraught with uncertainty.    But this is what I would do unless you feel that purchasing a new one is less hassle.

Good day and welcome to the community.

One way to approach this is to download and install ThinkVantage System Update: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-73695
Run it and see which packages it recommends. If it recommends any BIOS update, I'd suggest deselecting.

Hi, My ThinkPad Edge 11 (NVZ3PMH) has a problem with the power jack socket.I had to fumble with the wire to get the batterie rechargedNow it wont charge anymore Is it a known problem? Is it a warranty problem (bought 25 - 3 -2011)?Is there a quick solution? (to save my data before shipping)

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 11 Power problem

Hey ThinkpadEdge,

If I am understanding you correctly it would seem that the power adapter slot on the System Board is what your saying is loose? Please correct me if I am wrong but if this is the case you would need to send it in and have it repair ( replacement system board) or try to solder it yourself.

If it isn't the connection on the System Board then it would be the adaptor which you can buy a replacement. If your under warranty they will fix it for free and if you are worried about data loss you need to make a back up of HDD before you ship it.

Best Regards,

Hi,all, I have a thinkpad edge e50 which is about 3 years old. I recently replace the original CPU (i5-430M) by a i7- 620M. The problem is ever since the replacement, the laptop randomly freezes a lot, sometimes it can last 2-3 weeks and didn't freeze at all, sometimes it freezes when I watch youtube or even it is in idle. The CPU temperature is about 42 C as indicated by a PC monitoring software. So I wonder what is going on? is it the CPU or the motherboard (HM55) does not support the new CPU very well. this is what window event viewer tells me: : The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly. cheers

hi, all, I used Norton Ghost 15 to clone my old 320GB, which was originally installed in my EDGE15, to a new HDD (500GB). The clone process is fine, but the problem is after i installed the new HDD, and boot it into windows7 desktop, there is a line saying that "this is not a genuine copy of windows 7", and the desktop is blank (no icons and start-up menu) with blue background. so i wonder how to solve this thing, theres a win7 SN printed in the battery bay, but i dont know how to use it to verify the new HDD. ps.  i tried open task Manager and start the explorer from there, and it did work somehow, meaning that a temporary win7 account is activated, but if i clicked "computer" in the start-up menu, a error message popped up "no such interface supported"; and if i right clicked "computer", nothing responsed, nothing show up. cheers

Hey Daiyue,

This prompt from Windows OS 'this is not a genuine copy of windows 7" has nothing to do with your HDD what you should have is option to enter in your SN for your copy of Windows 7. In tell you authenticate the copy of windows your trying to run it will continue to function as it is now.

Here is a link from the Microsoft site talking about windows authentication.

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Edge 15 - 0301CTO model. For a good couple of months, I keep having a problem with the cooler not being able to go at full speed in case the CPU starts heating up. For some strange reasons, I couldn't find any option in BIOS to control the fan at all. I'm using the latest BIOS version available on the website 2.05 (last updated somewhere in 2013). I've tried to use vairous applications to control the fan but no luck. I tried SpeedFan, and another tool mentioned somewhere on this forum (Edit: Found the name of this tool - Thinkpad Fan Control by troubadix) that didn't work at all with Manual Settings and the SmartMode didn't start the fan at all for some reason. Currently the CPU runs around 70-80 Degrees Celsius. I had to purchase an external pad with 3 small fans but even this doesn't keep it low enough. I opened the back panel and tried to see if the fan was dirty or filld with dust. I've cleaned the vents as much as I could (using an air spray). I've run a bios update tool before posting this message and I noticed that during the update, my fan ramp up to max speed for the duration of the bios update. Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 Overheating Problem

Hi fouadinfo,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

As you have mentioned the temperature of the CPU is around 70-80 degree Celsius, which is not normal. So you have to contact to the Lenovo technical support for the further assistance, (thermal paste may have dried up or not applied).

Please let me know, whether the above suggestion helped you.
Have a good day.

Regards,
Naveen.v

When I turn it on and open the screen at anything higher than 45 degree angle, nothing displays on the screen. But if I put it at a 45 degree angle, it works perfectly; windows will show up on the screen.  I set it up on my monitor and eveytthing displays fine. Can anyone help me?

Hi Steve and welcome to the Community,

Page 68 shows how to take the keyboard off.  Inspect the cable for any rub marks or breaks and reseat the connector. If you see any breaks or bad kinks, it probably needs to be replaced.
