Disable trackpoint on E520

Question: Disable trackpoint on E520

When I disable the trackpoint using Ultranav on my E520 it automatically enables itself when I reboot. Does anyone have a solution?

Preferred Solution: Disable trackpoint on E520

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Disable trackpoint on E520

Do it through the Bios menu.

I love my new lenovo E520But it comes to my attention that my trackPoint wont work. Before I go on, I must say that I am a computer technician and I am **bleep** good at what I do. You know something is wrong when I'm posting my problems here hoping that someone will help me out. A little about my  machine with the upgrades I have made: I5 @ 2.3GHz8gb HyperX memory60gb SSDWin 7 PRODrivers from windows update and the regulars from the lenovo support page (including ultraNav) So I go to the mouse settings in Control Panel and I click the UltraNav section and the who trackPoint section is grayed out. I put the taskbar icon and all the trackPoint is grayed out there too. I Have a second machine that is exactly the same as this with the same specs and it all works.Only difference is that since this is MY computer, I disabled the bluetooth radio, the wimax radio and the wan radio because a.)they take battery, b.)I am hyper sensative to the bluetooth radio. other than that, all the bios settings are the same. Uninstalled the hardware for the mouse, uninstalled synaptics and ultranav and finally the device itself, restarted windows with the generic ps2 mouse driver. still no. installed ultranav again. still no. the three buttons below the stick don't work at all either. Next on my list of attempts is this system update utillity from lenovo and then finally minixp to see if i even have functionallity from it and to make sure it's not a hardware ... HiI bought an E520-1143 which was slightly water damaged, keyboard/trackpoint was not working and cable for touchpad+fingerprint reader was ruined from corrosion.  So i replaced the keyboard w/trackpoint and keyboard works now, but trackpoint doesn't. The cable for trackpad has not arrived yet so its unconnected. Currently running Windows 10, is there any way to figure out is this software or hardware related problem or does it require trackpad to be connected for trackpoint to work? Motherboard itself has no visible damage from water around three connectors under keyboard (Keyboard, Trakpoint & touchpad/fingerprint). There is nothing about touchpad or trackpoint listed in BIOS settings under Keyboard/Mouse. What i have done sofar was i installed "Synaptics UltraNav driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit), XP - ThinkPad" Version 16.2.19.14 - - - And this did not fix the problem Is there a specific Windows 10 driver available?

My E520 Thinkpad is only a few weeks old.  The first time I used it the trackpoint and buttons worked, but since then the red pointer works, but the buttons do not.  I have tried to download the driver update for the ultra nav several times, but once it tries to finish the box just scrolls forever and the installation does not happen.  I am not even sure this will repair the problem.  Also, I have not been able to download the Diagnostic Tool without an error.  Any help would be appreciated.

So I have an Thinkpad Edge E520 and for some reason my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working completely last week. I have a wireless mouse, which I am still able to use, but I want to still be able to use my trackpoint and touchpad. When I go to the device manager for the mouse, I see that my laptop doesnt have the Ultranav thing anymore, and when I try to install the driver on my laptop, it still does not show. Another problem I have had with my laptop which may be in relation to this is that my keyboard is acting strange. It will work for a while, but it will then stop working. If i put the laptop to sleep, then wake it up, it will work again for a few more minutes then will stop. I have attempted to restore my computer to factory settings, but the problems still occur. Has anyone else had this problem?

When I disable my trackpoint on my T540P it does not really disable, I am still able to use it afterwards. I'd like to disable it completely because it causes my cursor to move on its own. At the moment I have to wiggle it around a few times for the cursor to stop moving on its own and its annoying to do that constantly I used the following tutorial to disable the Trackpoint: https://support.lenovo.com/za/en/solutions/ht117094 Thanks

Hello, I have a Lenovo X230 and have a quick question, is it possible to disable the TrackPoint knob (the red knob) while keeping the buttons active? Disabling TrackPoint through the UltraNav driver results in having both the knob and the buttons disabled, the same thing goes for disabling it in the BIOS. Note that this model only has those two buttons build in while newer Lenovo models has two pairs of buttons (above and below the TrackPad). See: http://cdn.asia.cnet.com/story_media/62218216/1.jpg

Answer:X230 - Disable TrackPoint but not buttons?

you can in a way. Just select advanced feature only within the ultranav selection for the trackpoint. This way the trackpoint nib would only act as page scroller and won't move the pointer per se. Then you can switch the trackpoint sensitivity to firm touch. This is what i do for people whom can't use trackpoints.

Hello. I have brand new E431 with Windows 7 and I already encountered some trouble. Is there a way how to disable both touchpad and trackpoint? UltraNav driver does not allow to turn them off both and there is not any hotkey feature like Fn+F8 to control a touchpad on my notebook, or at least I did not find any yet.As you see, if aj disable touchpad, then I cannot manage trackpoint options and vice versa. However, disabled touchpad still reacts on press, so it can still cause errors when I type. Could you help me please? Or even better, is there a way to make a keyboard shortcut to such option?

Answer:E431 - How to disable both touchpad and trackpoint

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I doubt such a feature where you can disable both trackpoint and touchpad is not available. Try disabling touchpad in BIOS and see if it helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Answer:how disable the trackpoint in tablet mode

That's odd that the backside of your LCD touches the trackpoint tip.  Are you missing either of the little rubber spacers near the bottom edge (edge closest to you in laptop orientation) of the palm rests?  My LCD doesn't touch the keyboard or trackpoint tip at all when I'm in tablet orientation.

Is there a way to disable the trackpoint? In tablet mode, the cursor seems to move around and I think the culprit is the trackpoint rubbing against the back of the screen.

Answer:Thinkpad Twist - Disable trackpoint?

Hey there mosswoodpark,

The trackpoint should automatically disable when moved into tablet mode, this may be an issue where the the UltraNav driver has not up to date. The UltraNav driver for the Twist can be found here.

Additionally there has been some success in gaining a solution by updating the ThinkVantage Active Protection System, thanks to some work by Azrael_DD from this thread with trackpoint issues and tablets. I hope these solutions clear up this issue for you. Good Luck, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions.

Just received my T400s and I want to know how I can disable the TrackPoint and/or touchpad, since it comes in handy when typing. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Disable TrackPoint and touchpad on T400s

On my T500, I open the Control Panel, open Mouse, select UtraNav tab and I am presented with buttons to select / unselect the TouchPad and TrackPoint.  See if that or something like it works on your T400, too. Strange no one told you this earlier.

My question concerns middle-button-scrolling for the Trackpoint on the Yoga 260, which seems to use an Elantech device and driver. Most of the time when I try to use the middle button to scroll, it starts off trying to scroll horizontally, which I then have to overcome to scroll vertically. It takes a lot of time and makes it easy to overshoot. I've been playing around with registry settings and the INI file, but haven't been able to figure it out. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would be OK with disabling horizontal scrolling entirely. There's a thread about this on another Thinkpad here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/ThinkPad-13-TrackPoint-Disable-horizontal... There's a thread with a fix for the Synaptics Trackpoint here:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/ThinkPad-Can-I-disable-TrackPoint-from-s...

Is there any way to completely disable the touchpad and trackpoint on the X1 Carbon without going into bios? I am able to disable touchpad OR trackpoint by going into mouse properties in control panel but it won't let me do both.  I would like to turn it back on relatively easily if possible. I am trying to do this on a work computer and I have no administrative rights and I am using Windows 7 Professional. Can this be done or did Lenovo completely overlook such a simple feature?

Answer:Completely Disable Touchpad & Trackpoint on X1 Carbon

you can only do this through the BIOS menu. I guess, the reason it is not implemented in a software setting, is due to the fact that not many people in the enterprise environment requested this feature. Is there a specific reason why disabling the trackpad and leaving the trackpoint on won't work in your situation?

Hi all, I really like using the Trackpoint to scroll. But an increaing number of Web sites react to horizontal scrolling by jumping to other pages. So, for example, if I'm reading down a page -- and if I need to use the Trackpoint to scroll down as I'm reading -- if I'm not perfectly vertical when I pull down on the Trackpoint, the Web site detects it as a horizontal scoll, and I get whisked off to another page. I can't be the only person having this problem? Is there some way to disable the Trackpoint from scrolling horizontally without disabling it from scrolling vertically?

I am trying to find a way that the touch pad and trackpoint will disable when I connect an external mouse.  Other computers I've used have a setting for this, but I can not find one the Carbon X1. I don't want to disable them permanently (or at least not both of them) for those few times I'm not using an external mouse. My preference would be to disable one permanently, and the other only when an external mouse is present. Thanks

Hi, mkmchughIf there is such an option available, it would be with the mouse settings. Do you see anything related to disabling them with a USB mouse connected when you go to Mouse under Control panel and go to I believe is the Thinkpad tab?

So this is the second time I am experienceing a problem with my x1 trackpoint and with the debacle of shipping that happened last time, I don't want to have to go through this again. I have sent my unit into lenovo for the same problem about 2 months ago.  the problem is similar to the one outlined here (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-erratic-trackpoint-Synaptics-19-3-4-99/td-...). the mouse finds a home in the bottom-left or top right corner.   However, I perfer the touchpad to the pointing stick, so this probably is not be a hardware problem (or it is and it's just faulty hardware from the start).   All I literally want to do is disable the trackpoint pointing stick.  but when I do, it disables clicking so that's not an option.   I really can't afford to go another 2 months without my laptop again.  not now.    Edit: I goofed my lefts and rights

I grabbed the 5/2011 drivers for UltraNav from the Lenovo site and it appears that an option 'to disable the integrated pointing devices when an external pointing device is present' does not exist, or at the very least I can't easily find it.  Please please please please tell me I'm simply being dense and this behavior is very easy to enable. Seriously, the 5-year old Dell drivers I had with my old machine did that, and this is driving me BONKERS. Alternatively, if what I'm doing here is feature-requesting, I'd be like 50% there if I could Fn+F8 and have an option to kill both the touchpad and the trackpoint - alas, I can disable 1 or the other BUT NOT BOTH WITH THAT OPTION.  Can I really not disable both? Lenovo W520, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Answer:Option to disable UltraNav (touchpad + trackpoint) when external mouse is connected

I've never seen such a feature with the UltraNav drivers. You could just max out the PalmCheck and then set it to touchpad only.

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Anyways, my mouse on my laptop is broken. it goes all over my screen and i can't control it. it is spastic, and it does not move alot of times as well. And I have tried to disable it, but it did not work. Also, when I plug a regular mouse in, it works fine, unless the trackpoint is acting up. I want to disable the trackpoint mouse, but still use a regular mouse. Is that possible?

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Question: Trackpoint cap

I'm not sure if this is the place I'm supposed to post this. I absolutely hate the trackpoint when I type.  I type quite fast and I hit the trackpoint every once in a while -- but this is enough to really get on my nerves.  It's absolutely distracting.  Imagine typing out your thoughts then all of a sudden you hit the thing, get distracted, then irritated, and your thoughts gone.  ThinkPads are supposed to help you think.  The trackpoint unfortunately doesnt...  Are there a replacement tips that's depressed enough (and maybe colored black...) so that I dont hit it accidentally when I type?  Removing the tip works fine -- but it looks so ugly without it (makes it look like i'm using a broken equipment). Oh and I dont mind if the replacement cap will render the trackpoint unusable.  I just need it low enough so I dont accidentally hit it.

these are the three different types of trackpoint caps. You might get lucky with the first type and there is no black trackpoint caps produced by Lenovo.

You can disable the trackpoint by pressing Fn + F8 in windows and then select trackpad only. You can also disable trackpoint from BIOS menu.

Question: Trackpoint gone...

I did the usual "Windows update" this morning. After the installation had completed I noticed that my Trackpoint has "disappeared"! There is no reaction whatsoever when pressing the red dot and I can't control the mouse with it any more. I then checked in the control panel (no trace) and then had to learn, that it doesn't even exist in the device manager, either. I then rebooted, no change. I then even powered off and reboot from power off again, still no trackpoint! And after I downloaded the trackpoint driver from the Lenovo drivers download site and wanted to (re-)install the driver, I got an error message "this driver can not be installed on non-trackpoint systems". ?!? What? What the %@[email protected]#*%?  Where has my trackpoint gone??? How come, that it has completely disappeared? How do I get this thing working again? Edited: I later noticed, that a part of that Windows Update apparently was a new "Wacom Two Finger Touch" driver. Might that have to do with my disappeared Trackpoint? Michael PS.: Boy - is this annoying to have to work without Trackpoint!

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Trackpoint gone...

I just had to learn that there is a Fn-key (F8) that allows to enable/disable Trackpoint and Touchpad. I must have accidentally operated that button without noticing (in fact, I hadn't even known before that there IS such an option...).Its setting was on "Touchpad only". After re-enabling the trackpoint there everything came back to normal. Wheew. What a relieve! :-) And it (most probably) had nothing to do with the Windows Update - just an unlucky conincidence! Michael

I simply want to do the equivalent of "Disable IMAPI Service (Work's in most cases)" back in the days of Win XP

So in Win 7, I found the above link, and the title says How to Disable a CD Burning Group Policy

but at the bottom, it says ENABLE

Is microsoft saying "Enabling Remove CD burning feature"?
Or is disable means really disable CD burning feature?

Answer:Does Disable CD burning policy at Win 7 means Enable or Disable?

The option is "Remove CD Burning Features" and the selection you want is Enabled which means ""Remove CD Burning Features are now enabled" hence they are removed and burning is not allowed.

Yes, I agree, Microsoft does choose some rather stupid terminology to do some things, especially the file copy/overwrite dialogues which can be truly confusing for some people.

It would have been more efficient and simple to name the option "CD Burning Features" and that is either enabled or disabled, but no... they gotta make it twist in on itself with semantic bullshit.

The whole enabled/disabled thing would be better served with simple yes or no choices.

Hello my friends,

I activated the ctrl alt disable login screen for Windows 10 by using this registry key from this forum.(Lock Screen - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums).

I downloaded and installed the key to disable only to find it didn't work so I tried to manually do it by changing the number from 0 to 1 only to find its already at 1.
I also tried going the user passwords2 to find the box to disable ctrl alt disable login is already ticked, but is greyed out meaning I can't untick the box.

Help I did try everything i could find on the internet, but to no avail.

Answer:Can't disable Ctrl Alt Disable on Windows 10 Login screen

Hello TheBlackRussian,

That tutorial is for disabling the lock screen itself instead. The lock screen cannot be disabled if you have the CTLR+ALT+DELETE secure sign-in enabled. If you wanted to keep the lock screen, then be sure to enable it again before doing the tutorial below.

You'll want to use the tutorial below instead to only disable secure sign-in.

Question: E520 CPU Issues?

I've had this E520 for over a year now and it's run very smoothly so far.  Recently, I noticed that when I was using processor intensive applications, e.g. Gaming, there were occasional spikes where the FPS would suddenly drop.  This issue has become progressively worse over a month.   Since I'm out of the warranty period, I ended up taking apart the entire laptop in order to clear the dust in the fans, which was my first guess as to what the problem was caused by.  This has had little to no effect and my CPU still ends up hitting 100 degrees and throttling, causing lag.  I also tried updating the BIOS, but this also had no effect and also seemed to have taken away the option of turning Turbo-Boost off in the BIOS, which might've also helped alleviate the overheating.   One solution I've found is that setting processor affinity in task manager to 2 CPUs slightly reduces framerate, but seems to prevent the huge spikes i'm seeing running applications using all cores, but it's not a very good solution and I'm not getting the most out of my computer.  I've also tried installing Speedfan, which has helped a little bit by reacting faster and speeding up the fan a lot when the temperature is high, but the issue persists. Does anybody have any other ideas to what might be causing this problem, or solutions? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I keep having this intermittent problem that I just can't seem to be able to fix: No mater what power source I use, or if I have a monitor plugged in or not, most of the times when I try to power up, the hardware boots but nothing displays on the screen, then the computer shuts down on it's own and repeats the cycle a few times before it starts normally. Once started there are no issues... I updated the BIOS, tried different BIOS settings including reverting to default and it still occurs. A couple of times I had to send it into service, but when they got it it wasn't happening anymore so I am clueless... Question: Router for E520

I have an Edge E520 with 802.11 wireless, manufactured in July 2011. I'm going to buy a router to connect two laptops (my Edge and a company-supplied laptop of unknown type yet) to the Internet. Both machines will use Ethernet cables and be located close together on the same desk. Here are a few questions on this setup. Can it work with 802.11n?Can it access the 5 GHz band (as well as the 2.4 GHz band)? If so, should I get a dual-band router? Can it access IPv6? This is recommended going forward, right? Is there anything else recommended for the router I buy? Thanks!

Answer:Router for E520

Please answer my question. I see a lot of problems here with existing routers not working correctly with Lenovo products. I'm trying to avoid such problems by getting a well-suited router for my E520. This is preventive maintenance. So even though I'm not asking about a Lenovo product per se, the router I get will interact with your product. At least answer this question:  Can the E520 access the 5 GHz band?

I've owned my E520 about three months.  It died about 3 weeks ago, and had the motherboard replaced after waiting more than a week for the part.  It just died again, and Lenovo advises that the motherboard needs to be replaced again.  I'm very sorry I bought this machine.  Does anyone have experience in getting a refund from Lenovo?   Also, are there others having the same problem.

Answer:NEW E520 DEAD--AGAIN!

Yes, you are clearly not alone by the looks of this Forum. I bought at E520 at the end of January and am starting to regret it. It completely died after 7 weeks, and I was very disappointed that Lenovo expected me to pay the £20 to send it to their repair centre ( a £500 laptop dead after 7 weeks!). They replaced the motherboard. The replacement lasted 9 weeks (is this called progress?) and I am awaiting its return. I wonder how long this one will last. Lenovo's reputation for reliability is overrated, in my experience. Customer service very poor. Repair centre service was swift, and I would have said professional, had they actually repaired the thing with components that lasted more than a few months. Would love a refund if it were possible.

I don't really have knowledge about laptops, but I try to describe my problem as clear as possibe and hope somebody can tell me what to do. After 13 months (naturally 13 month by a guarantee of 12 month) my laptop gets his problem. Hello, And thank you for this forum.  I am not well versed in computers to start off.  I put my computer on sleep a lot, almost all the time. I rarely shut it down. Does that affect my RAM? Anyway I have been having problems shuting down my machine. I click shut down and it says "logging off" which is not what I am doing, and then it does not shut down. I have to manually shut it down.  My computer has also been freezing a lot lately and I can't run task manager when I do the cntrl alt delete.  I am guessing I messed up my RAM. I got the fast defrag program to lower the ram usage. The above is the picture of what I did and have using that program. Please help.

I installed a Intel 180gb SSD in my Lenovo edge E520. I was wondering if there was a way to a second HDD in as well. I see there is a port for it however there doesnt seem to be enough room.ThanksScott

Answer:Room for HDD and SDD in E520?

I think the port/space you are talking about is for an optional PCI Express Mini Card. At that location you can install a wireless WAN card or an mSATA solid state drive. Since you are looking for a second storage drive, the mSATA drive is your solution. There are many brands available including Intel from 30GB and up. Hello, it's been really hot last few days, so I decided that it would be good to buy cooling pad. Is there any specific cooling pad that is recommended for E520? Do you have any good experiences with some cooling pad? There's so many of them and I don't want to buy some that will not work properly with this type of notebook, so it would be great, if any of you give me some recs.Thank you in advance.

Answer:Cooling pad for E520

Actually there is a very good cooling pad that Belkin sells through Lenovo.  If you use the laptop on your lap or on a wooden surface it is well worth the investment.  The cost of the Cooling pad is 23.37 plus shipping.  This is the link to order if you are interested:

Hi there,  i am planning to change my disk.Since i am quite novice to software as well as hardware subjects i would like to hear any suggestionsfor the best SSD for my laptop. My primary concern is the compatibility, reliability and secondly the speed (70 % to 30%). I have come up to the following two :128GB Crucial m4 2.5-inch SATA 6GB/sSH100S3/120G - Kingston HyperX solid state drive - 120. Finally, there is the SSDSC2MH120A2K5 Intel 510 2.5 inch Solidwhich is very expensive and i am not quite sure if it is compatible. Is it worth the difference on the price? Thank you in advance for your responses. Cheers,Alex

Answer:Upgrade from HDD to SSD for E520

I got Crucial M4 256GB recently and I'm very pleased with it. Great speed and price (especially 256GB one)! With new firmware v0009 it has up to 500 MB/s sequential read speed.Check some benchmarks and a review at Anandtech (also compared to HyperX):http://www.anandtech.com/show/4712/the-crucial-m4-ssd-update-faster-with-fw0009/2Crucial also has a great record for reliability, unlike SSDs that use Sandforce controllers (which is used in Kingston HyperX).If reliability is the most important factor then go either with Crucial or Intel.

Question: E520 CPU Whine

Hi all, So on my newly purchased Thinkpad Edge E520 I have two major issues.  1: The webcam driver causes Windows to boot slowly. This is a pretty annoying issue but since disabling the webcam solves it I can overlook it asuming a driver update will fix it later.  2: The dreaded CPU whine which others have experienced on other thinkpads. It is surely not my fan or HDD and disabling CPU Power Management in BIOS as outlined in this KB entry solves it. The whine is louder when running on battery but is noticable even on AC power. The KB entry says to call Lenovo support but I'd like to put off that torture for as long as possible.  Since obviously there is no software fix possible for the whine issue, what are the odds that a replacement unit will be free of this whine? I'd hate to spend all the time and energy sending this back only to have the same problem on a new unit...I like the E520 build quality wise. It is a handsome machine that would be near flawless to me if not for these two glaring imperfections.  The machine in questions is this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1366238&CatId=4939

Hi, I just got my new ThinkPad E520. I bought new without any OS. I just installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit, but now I have a problem because there are no drivers and I can't connect to WLAN in order to download the drivers (as the wlan drivers aren't installed). I tried to download the wlan driver from my PC and put them on my laptop via usb stick, but it didn't work out (might have been the wrong driver too). So my question is, where can I find the drivers I need and download them? I can't find any on the lenovo download driver page.

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Need help with getting drivers on my new E520

English or Deutsch?  I found the driver download pages for both languages by just clicking "support' above and following the prompts.  Either "Download drivers and software" on the left, or "driver matrices" in the middle of the (English) page.

The easiest way to load the drivers it to connect to wired ethernet and install ThinkVantage System Update.  Then run it and it should pull down all the other drivers and utilities.

If you must use WLAN, install the appropriate driver and then use wifi to install TVSU and go from there.

You don't say which E520 model you have so I can't tell you which wifi card you have (and might not be able to anyway, depending on model...)  Looks like you have three choices (English again):

Intel Wireless LAN (11abgn, abg, bg)
ThinkPad Wireless LAN (802.11b/g/n)
Intel WiMAX 6250 AGN

HTH,
Z.

Answer:E520 - TWO PROBLEMS

"Problem #2:When ever I listen to music or watch video, the audio or video stop for period of time because the laptop was moved. Once stop moving it starts to play normally, but I miss the skipped part. What is going on." "It's not a bug, it's a FEATURE!"It is a feature indeed, it's called lenovo airbag protection or lenovo active protection system.Essentialy it's an accelerometer joined with an off (or rather "STAND STILL!") switch in your Hard Drive. It does so to prevent destroying hard drive/data when falling etc. If you miss the skipped part then it's called badly programmed player Foobar2000, WMP11 (default win7), VLC stop playing but continue from the moment they stopped. I do not recommend disabling this feature as it drastically increases life-time of your hard drive, especially if you notice it which means it's working, and you're using it, which also means you use your laptop somewhat "the wrong" way :] If it happens often consider buing an SSD or using media player capable of setting up a huge cache so that it reads big chunks of media files ahead of time and keeps them in memory.

Question: My E520 is dead

I had called into Tech support due to the now commonly known issue with my E520, Model 1143. I see that many have had better luck than what I was just told by tech support. It's out of warranty and they can't do anything about it. I'm sure there is a better solution to this from Lenovo since it's a common problem and a widely sold unit. Please help. ThanksPrakash

Hi,I bought an E520 last October, and find it great. But today it will not boot up.The red light lights up solid, and the green charging light is also on.But the Lenove Splash screen doesn't come on, nor does the Windows 7 Starting screen appear. The screen is just blank. There is an initial sound of the hard-drive turning over, but nothing after than. I've left it for up to ten minutes to power on.I've tried a hard-reboot by holding down the power button.Any suggestions before I attempt to track down a tech shop that might be open?Charlotte

Would anyone be able to help me with Edge E520 laptop screen. The colour resolution of the screen is not bright compared to other brands, I had turned to brightness to maximum but the screen is still so dim compared to my friends' laptop, Acer or HP. Spoke with the Lenovo Support and they cannot assist me as they seems to have no idea how to assist customers. Anyone who can assist me would be much aprreicated.

Is it miscalibrated? Try calibrating it with the Windows 7 color calibrator.

Not sure where to post this so forgive me if this is the wrong place. I am new to Lenovo (after having two Dells and two HPs). I have settled on either an E520 or L520, both i5 (2.3 vs. 2.5) and the E has a 500GB hd and the L has a 320 GB (my 250 GB isn't even full now and I have 50GB of family pictures on it that I need to burn to DVD, so HD size isn't a big deal to me. Other than that, they seen the same, even down to the price. Which is the better machine for general business use? Any preference or difference? Thanks for any help.

Question: Thinkpad - e520

I got my first ThinkPad e520 last week. I didn't want to rush to share my experience so took a week's usage to share my experience.e520 - i5 -6GB - 500 GB - Windows 7 HomeStarting with positive feedback:- Matt finish of the laptop feels really good and doesn't feel cheap for this price- Chiclet keypad is also great to type- Performance is good overall for personal use- like usual ThinkPad - finger scan, touch pad is very good- 720p webcam is also very good- Lot of shortcut keys near num-pad like calc, lock, search and my computer are really useful- Fast windows bootup Now few points to raise your eyebrows,- First thing I noticed was a stuck pixel about an inch lower left corner from center of the screen. I was advised no replacement will be done for 1 stuck pixel and only option was to return this laptop by warranty team. I loved this laptop so much that I thought I will live with stuck pixel but after using it for a week I felt it was very annoying so will call service department tomorrow and ask them once again if they can do anything about this stuck pixel, else I am gonna return it and get a new one. Also I tried all the options which are floating in the internet to fix stuck pixel but nothing solved my problem. If the stuck pixel was at the corners you can try to ignore it but since it is right at the center of the screen you got to see it to know how annoying it would be - Lot of flux in 'F' and 'J' keys and another small issue but annoying once you starting typing... Answer:Thinkpad - e520

hey jai, thank you so much for your nutshell commentary about E520. looking at this post, i see that you're pleased with your purchase except for some minor annoyance such as the dead pixels.truly sorry about that but replacement can only be done if it is 3 dead pixels or more. as for the flux in "f" and "j" keys, could you help us by explaining more ?

Hi!I'm sorta-kinda new to the Thinkpad family (I recentley got a T520 for myself and love it!)Anyways, my mother's 5 year old laptop recently just stopped working so I'm looking for a new laptop for her. I customized an E520 with the i5 2410m, 6gb ram, fingerprint, and webcam and total came out to around $600, I was hoping it would be a bit cheaper.., if I were to drop down the specs to the i3 would it be capable of running Quickbooks smoothly? And is there anything I should watch out for the E520's Thanks!

Answer:E520 Reccomendations?

The i3 should be more plenty; especially considering that the previous laptop was 5 years old. That said, I'd drop the RAM amount back to 4GB.There's a bit of an ongoing issue with the Edge touchpads as per the stickied topic at the top of the forum. Not sure if it affects the E520; the E420 I played with in a store (of the same generation) didn't seem to have any issues with the touchpad.

HiWe have 5 Edge E520. Three of them went dead with exactly the same symptom during warranty period which to me pretty much looks like a common problem. They have been repaired under warranty and I asked multiple times about a proactive fix for the remaining 2 as along as they are under waranty - I never got any response to that. Now, the 4th E520 is dead with exactly the same symptom. Is there any chance I get that repaired for free due to the known issues?Does sombody know what the cause is?Can I order the parts to be replaced somewhere (I am an electronical engineer - I can replace the parts by myself)? Any help appreciatedThanksMcL

Does anyone else have this problem?  Where the cursor keeps drifting after you let go when you are using the trackpoint? It doesn't do it all the time for me, but when it does, it kinda gets on my nerves.  Kinda takes the extra percision advantages away. Thanks!

Answer:Trackpoint Drifting after let go

yeah i have that problem, and i have a friend with the same problem. its just because the rubber doesnt stay seated right on the piece is sitting on, if you push on it too hard. thats my guess, but i could be wrong. i notice if i dont push on the rubber part very hard it keeps that from happening. for some reason i always push straight down on the rubber piece and thats when it does it the most.

I recently got a Thinkpad T420.  One of my favorite features is the nub, but for the past few days the nub has been impossible to use.  It will click things randomly and rapidly and also freezes and shakes the mouse.  Once I deactivate trackpoint it works fine, but it's one of my favorite features. I just bought the computer two weeks ago so I can't imagine the keyboard breaking already. Is it a software problem or something?

Answer:trackpoint loose

When you say the TrackPoint is loose, are you refering to the red cap that covers it?  If so, it's probably just worn out and needs to be replaced.  You can order replacements from Lenovo.  The part number is 73P2698, and here in the US, they're $9.99.  Sometimes they're also available on eBay.

Just couple days ago, my TrackPoint started to get weird. It started to move extremely fast on certain direction, and even I set to the lowest sensitivity, it still move extremely fast. Basically I have no control of the track point anymore. I tried to plug in a notebook mouse with trackpoint turned on, I still can't move my mouse. I have to disable the trackpoint. I even tried to replace the red cap but still no use. Does anyone have this problem and know how to fix this? Thanks.

For the past week or two it seems that the mouse clicks on its own on my T420. This is in TrackPoint only mode (TouchPad disabled) with press to select disabled. This issue is reproducible as it generally happens right after a normal click or unclick. For example, if I highlight text in a word processor by clicking and dragging my cursor over the text when I release the button the system registers a phantom click within the next second or so. I also have noticed these phantom clicks after middle clickling. Does this sound like a possible driver issue or should I go ahead and call to have a tech come out and replace parts?

Answer:TrackPoint clicks on its own

@nibs,Try uninstalling UltraNav, reboot the laptop then install it back and see if it helps. If problem persist then I guess its time to contact the techs.

Hi All,Could someone help me to identify if my trackpoint on the T420S is broken? The images are here,http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7643/fig1k.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/199/fig2h.jpg  In the first image, the red trackpoint can easily come out of the fixture on the keyboard. If I take out the red cap, there is a black thing as shown in second image located on key "G."  I try to jam it into the fixture, but did not work out.Should this black thing need to always stay in the fixture? Is it just be glued to the fixture?Should I ask Lenovo for a service? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Is my trackpoint broken?

The images don't work, however, I think I understand.  The Trackpoint is a red rubber cap that just fits on a black plastic post between the G, H, and B keys.  It lifts right off of the black plastic post.  The post is a permanent part of the keyboard.  The "eraser" head is user replaceable when necessary. The underside of the Trackpoint "eraser" is hollowed out to fit over the black post.  It is snug, but does not require "jamming."  When in place, does it work?

After just a few months of usage, my W510's TrackPoint cap came loose. I ordered a three-part TrackPoint cap collection on eBay. Alas, the caps don't fit.

No surprise if you look at this photo of a non-W-series keyboard with the cap removed. The TrackPoint post in my W-series ThinkPad is yellow rather than black and significantly smaller:

Link to picture

Also, the W-series is prominently absent from the list of supported models in Lenovo's specs of the replacement caps.

Anyone know if replacement caps for the W-series are available?

Also, how would I attach the cap? Just pushing it back didn't really do it for my original cap, it kept coming loose.

Answer:Replacement TrackPoint cap?

some of the cap collection on ebay is fake. The W510 uses the same keyboard as mine T400s, and the real Lenovo trackpoint from T60 fits the T400s keyboard perfectly.

I've been using Lenovo laptops for the last 10 years because of my preference for the trackpoint.  However, I recently purchased a P40 yoga and the trackpoint middle button scrolling is horrendous.  It takes 5 or 6 seconds before it starts scrolling.  Also, when you press the middle button, the cursor does not change to the scroll cursor.  Please help me fix this as I am very unhappy that my brand new computer does not work as well as my other (3 really old) Lenovo laptops.

Hi beickus,It is in my standpoint but you don't have to push it hard to test it's limits, play it gently and use soft hands to use it. A simple touch works best, you don't really have to rest your finger on it. Hope it helps.

Question: x230 trackpoint

Hey,sometimes when I move my pointer somwhere and then release trackpoint the pointer goes a little bit backwards. Can it be fixed?Regards

Answer:x230 trackpoint

TrackPoint drift has been happening as long as I can remember, at least back to the X31.  Release the trackpoint, and it may drift towards the top left.  If you let it drift, it stops after a few seconds and after that works properly.  At least for me this happens infrequently enough so as not to be a big deal.
