Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 (0217) battery problem

Question: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 (0217) battery problem

Hello Guys, Since I couldn't find any solution for my problem, I decided to write here, hoping that someone (either from team Lenovo or from the users) have the same problem and therefore can help me. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 model (version 0217). (I bought it from a friend, since it was not shipped anymore when I decided to buy it.)I have problems with my battery. The design capacity of it is 62.12 Wh, I used it wisely, so it wasn't always charged up to 100%. I always discharge it down around 5-7% and then plug in the AC adapter. (See image.) My first problem is that in the last 3 months, the capacity is gone down to 45.88 Wh and I can't really figure out why. Can this be a generic problem with the battery? My second problem is - for which I've found another topic here but it didn't help me - that when I charge the battery, charging stops at 99%, showing "3 minutes is remaining" and if I unplug and replug the adapter, it stops as 99% saying it is fully charged. In the battery maintenance, I changed the settings from "Always fully charge" to Custom, but still, it won't charge up the battery fully. My third problem is that I updated the BIOS of my laptop some days ago and when I try to search for a battery firmware update or when I do a battery gauge reset, the system suddenly shuts down without any warning or whatever. I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this, I really love my laptop but it really bugs me... Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 (0217) battery problem

1) Battery do wear out eventually, you already have 234 cycles on the battery. So the battery capacity drop in the latter part of the cycles count is quite normal. It is nature of these battery to wear out. 2) For thinkpads, this behaviour is quite normal, this helps to prevent unnecessary wear on the battery cell. Once you use your battery back to say 95% or so, it will recharge back to 100%. 3) Are you saying that your laptop no longer works or that it intermittently shuts down?

Hi All As per the title suggests - just purchased one of these off the web and it's a nice little machine. Tried to fit a 128gb OCZ Vertex drive but it doesn't slot all the way into the SATA port, whereas a standard HDD does. Appears to be down to the physical profile of the drive and the slot. Does anyone know of an SSD which will fit? I saw another thread which mentioned the Crucial M4 and the x25-m SSDs, but wondered if there were any other owners who could shed some light on this.

Hello, I upgraded BIOS to the latest 1.15 (for my Edge 13 type 0217) and I have upgraded my drive to SSD V300. Everything was working smooth with my newly fresh Windows 7 64bits installation. Then the laptop was hibernated for one day on battery which ran out. I was not able to start the laptop, until I removed the battery and unplugged AC. Now it looks like something happened in the BIOS because: - fan is running full speed all the time- Windows is booting slowly (there is 10 seconds delay before I see the Windows logo, then it goes fine)- when I turn off the laptop, everything turns off but fan is going full speed and LED indicates its turned on (I need to hold the power button 10 secs to turn off hard) I tried to disable Windows hibernate feature and removed the hibfil.sys file. Did not help. Something bad had to happen in BIOS when battery fully discharged. I tried to load BIOS defaults. Did not help. Anyone?

Answer:After BIOS update on ThinkPad Edge 13 (0217) fan not stopping

I tried to boot Linux from CDROM and the 10-15 secs delay (before I see SYSLINUX loader) is there, so this is a BIOS issue and not Windows 7 issue. It was working fine, until I hibernated the computer. Maybe BIOS thinks it should be resuming before it realizes it is not hibernated anymore. What can I do?

Hellos, I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13. I'm wondering if this laptop is one of the laptops that will get destroyed if i remove it's RTC battery. An IT Professional told me today that removing the RTC battery on some laptops would destroy the laptop. Though he didn't know if that is the case with this. He did use another IMB (ThinkPad or something) laptop as an example of laptop's that would get destroyed. Apprecheate help, and Thanks in advance! ;D

Answer:RTC Battery Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13

Ok, i just now removed the RTC battery, and put it back together. Now, when i start up, i get a black screen, which is demanding a password.

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing £25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 i5 Laptops with Windows 7 - Dead Laptop with Battery Problems

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

Hi Marti,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If you feel that the battery backup is too low, try doing a battery firmware upgrade. Check the Lenovo support site for any battery firmware updates for your particular model.

Refer this knowledgebase which explains some tips to improve battery backup. From the power manager snapshot you have posted, it looks like the battery is performing fine.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

hi,  my daughter's edge type 0217 has very reproduceable hardware problem. It occurred the first time when she just handed over the runnin laptop. you accept it holding it on a one of its corners, en ooops, it shuts down. Now I discovered that there is a specific spot on its bottom that has this sudden shutdown effect. Just push there with one finger, absolutely not hard, and the PC shutsdown as if the battery were taken out, or a hardware reset button were pushed. She tells me il also occors when it is flat on a table, and the table shocks or vibrates.  Anything I can do against that ? Jan

Answer:hardware problem: sudden shutdown of Thinkpad ege type 0217, when pushed on the bottom

Is it a proper shutdown (all tasks shut down, windows says it's powering off) or just loss of power, ie laptop goes black right away. Edit: Your posts seem to indicate the latter. If it is so, you should take it to a service center/warranty repairs.

Hi, i am starting to be desperate, therefore i registered myself here. Let me explain my story. My computer is now almost 2 years old and I have less than 14 days till the warranty expires (I am from Europe), but I'd like to avaid this, because i really need my computer now, not after 30 days, which is by law designated time till which it must be returned to me back. I did not have to use my computer outside home for about 3 month, so I was using that during that period as desktop computer, where i set in lenovo power manager, that all energy should be taken from the AC adaptor letting the battery to deplete itself in its own pace. But i have taken my computer to the libraries lately and i have experienced sudden battery problems. Let me describe them in order as it happened. 1) battery shows that that it has more than lets say 20% of power, but windows power manager warns me that battery capacity is in reality 6% and i need to use my AC adaptor now. after second even lenovo power manager recognize the fact that battery is almost depleted. first i did not pay attention, i thought it was some temporary bug and it will not be repeated again. 2) unfortunatelly it was, therefore i updated lenovo power manager to current version (6.11), which realized that current battery capacity was not 54Wh (as before update), but 47Wh. Therefore I resetted battery gauge statting that battery capacity is now slightly over 51Wh. For couple of days everything was as it should ... Read more

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13" sudden BATTERY problem

After todays restart original baterry capacity is restored back to 62+Wh, But current capacity is still 54Wh, higher than after last battery reset. I am upgrading to higher version of Power Manager.

Hi...I have E130 with 0% battery (can't be charged anymore). I have bought a new battery but can't use. When I plugged it (with a power source plugged as well), and I try to to turn it on, it worked. But not so long after the windows logon screen displayed (I use Windows 7), then it turn off again and cannot turn on anymore, unless I unplug the power outlet first. I try to changed with the old battery again and there's no problem (with the power source plugged, of course). I try to update the BIOS, but since my battery level is 0%) it cannot be done (always rejected). Is there anyone can help to solve my problem, please? Thanks.

Hi!I bought my lenovo thinkpad edge e330 this January and soon after that the problems begun.I formatted my computer straight and installed both ubuntu 12.10 and windows 7 ultimate. At first everything worked as it should but soon I noticed a weird problem. On regular desktop use the computer freezes. When the computer freezes it doesn't respond to any input (keyboard or mouse) the only think that helps is hard reset. The freezing occurs on both operating systems about once in an hour. The freezing only happens on regular desktop use and on low load, never on stress.Because the problem occured on both operating systems, I tought that it must be a hardware based problem. I called Lenovo support and the laptop was sent to a repair centre and the the motherboard was replaced. The problem persisted so i called the support again.Because the problem only occured on low load the guy on support tought that the battery is faulty and sent me a new one. The problem still persisted.Because it seemed that Lenovo support couldn't help me, I tried to solve the problem myself and decided to format the computer again. So i installed Ubuntu and Windows again and started testing if the problem had disappeared. And it partly did, the problem seemed to have disappeared from windows but still occured on ubuntu. Now i have absolutely now idea whether the problem is caused by software or hardware. Has anyone had similar problems with any thinkpad edge model and has anything helped?

Answer:Lenovo thinkpad edge e330 freezing problem

I had this problem but then I took the battery out while it was plugged in and when I needed it to go I put the battery in and unplugged it.

Answer:Problem Installing Windows 7 on Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 665D817

I've seen this happen occasionally when you install via USB. In my experience, it's when a USB 3.0 or eSATA/USB combo port is present. It doesn't happen if you bootstrap it from an existing Windows, nor does it happen when you install from optical media. There's one trick that involves ImageX that you can use to install Windows, but that gets a bit complicated.

I've had this Thinkpad Edge E430 since 2012 and have loved it, but recently I've been having a problem with it. In order to start it up I have to start it at least twice, and now it seems that the AC adapter must be plugged in for it to start. What will happen the first time or when it's just running on the battery is that the red indicator light will turn on, and I will hear the fan and the harddrive start up, but the screen will remain black and the computer will not respond to anything. When I have it plugged in and try the second time, it will start up no problem, and there doesn't seem to be any response issues once the laptop is up and running. I thought it might be a battery problem, but it has the same start up issues when I took out the batter and just had the AC adapter plugged in. Any ideas what this might be?

Hi Folks, Recently I purchased a new WiFi-Router supporting 5 GHz-Radio. Of course I intended to use this feature but unfirtunately I relized after a few tries and internet research that my quite new Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13 (0217-3BG) doesn't support it... THe WiFi Module is according to the Windows Sytem Manager a 1x1 1b/g/n Wireless LAN PCI Express Half Mini Card Adapter. Now I'm planning to exchange it with a Adapter capable to use the 5 GHz Frequency Range. My questions: Which Adapters may I use for an exchange? I know there's a Whitelist existing - an I heard I could find informations in the Hardware Maintenance Manual. Well, I couldn't - maybe I'm too stupid to interpret the facts given there.. D Is there anything else i need to know concerning such kind of parts-exchange? Greetings

Answer: NO" Unfortunately, Lenovo does not support 5GHZ bandwidth range (no matter what Techical Support says.  I would appreciate if you keep your post updated with solution you find.  I'm looking to make the same upgrade too. Since Lenovo does support Intel® Centrino® the possible solutions may be: Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 > (has 3 antennas. Hello again, I know I haven't posted in a while, but I have a computer problem. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W500 running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I recently cleaned out the hard drive. I reinstalled the operating system and last night, the battery charged 100%, and a few hours ago, when I plugged the charging charging cord into the computer and turned the computer on, and the computer said the battery was at 5% charge, plugged in but not charging. (P.S. I installed the itunes 64 setup file to set itunes back up again.) The computer said that there were problems with the battery and I should consider getting a new battery. The charging cord is plugged into the computer, and I intend to have the charging cord plugged into the computer overnight. Should I? And what site or store should I go to to get a new battery? Do I need a new charging cord? Or is there is a way to solve it without getting a new charging cord ot battery? Any help would be greatly appeeciated.

Hello, We are still running XP in our company. We have bought an EDGE 13 (0217-2YG)In order to run this in AHCI mode, for previous Thinkpads, we have needed to install the Intel Active Matrix Storage Driver. For this laptop there is a driver listed -  Intel SATA controller AHCI driver - for the EDGE 13. It looks like this is the same. It says that it is for the following device: Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller Unfortunately the ThinkPad EDGE 0217 does not include this device. I tried to use this driver anyway but it did not work. Do you know if there is a driver available? Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Answer:Intel Active Matrix Storage Driver for EDGE 13 0217?

Hi Archie,

You're looking at the wrong driver, the following lists "Intel ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller" which is not for your machine type:-

 http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74292

The one you need for type 0217 is this:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-76331

Hope this helps.

Hi, My Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430 is listed in the "supported W8" systems, http://shop.lenovo.com/gbweb/gb/en/learn/products/ee8/index.html But what is "Lenovo Enhanced Experience 8"? Should be some software available? Should be something available? So far, I got my hands over some drivers (card reader, hotkey, active protection system) and little more. Should something else be installed in the notebook to improve it's performance?

If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

My battery on the Thinkpad edge says only 27 % left. We tried to reset, but nothing happened. What should we do?

Answer:Battery Thinkpad Edge 15

Hey there Nancy,

If you could, please provide us with a few more details. I see your using a ThinkPad Edge 15, about how long have you had the machine? What is the machine type and model number of your machine? (It should be in this format: XXXX-XXX) and usually is found on the underside of the machine on the label next to the serial number, or in the battery compartment on the label located there.

Is this an overtime decrease, or is all of a sudden?

Have you tried a static discharge? Here is how to perform the Thinkpad static discharge:

Unplug the power supply
Remove the battery
Disconnect any cords or express cards
Press the power button 10 times, and on the 10th press hold it for 30 seconds

Some of the ThinkPad Edge 15's needed a battery firmware update to correct an issue with the charge %. Have you tried using this firmware update?

I look forward to hearing back from you nancywintner!

Hi, I bought a 84+ battery, from a trusted source and which looks very legit (all the stickers, manual, box is there). problem is, it doesn't work in the E330: http://screencast.com/t/Q7NqorqHdFW The only difference I see is in the FPU: http://imgur.com/EbIoU (the top one is the replacement battery, below the original that came with the thinkpad). Is it possible, that lenovo differentiates between two batteries of the same name (84+) for ddifferent notebooks?

Hi,I have a Lenovo Edge 15 which I bought in January.  Although experienced in computers I had trouble using the Windows 8 and not enough time to learn it so I did not use it for 6 months.  I have just started it up again this week.   I have found that it has a lot of problems.  malware, viruses and lots of window errors.  I have put nothing onto the computer...no documents, nothing.  I have been advised by Windows 8 forum to restore it to factory condition.  Do you agree and how would I do that?  Would that remove the viruses?  MANY THANKS!!!  Barbjs

I have a ThinkPad Edge 15 laptop which is 6 months old. Its use is quite extensive kept over an almost permanent place. So, my query is that can i remove the battery & run over the direct AC supply in order to save the battery life as if i use the battery then it needs to be charged a number of times during the day. Is it harmful for the laptop to run on AC supply???

Regards,[email protected]

Answer:ThinkPad Edge battery query

you can run the laptop without the battery inserted, provided that you have the 90 watts adapter. If you have the 65 watts adapter, then the CPU will throttle backup without the battery inserted.ThinkPad have management system which you can setup to prevent top up charging from happening thus ruining the battery chemistry. However, you should note that the battery can act as UPS system, in case there is brownout or blackout, or accidental unplugging of the power adapter.

I updated the BIOS on my thinkpad E430. After that the operating system gives me a notice that the battery in my laptop is not a Lenovo product and that it will not charge the battery. The only way I could charge the battery is if I take it out after turning off my computer . I turn it back on and I don't get the notice. I don't want to be taking out my battery everytime I turn on the computer. And I don't want to keep my computer in sleep mode just to avoid the notice. Do you get it? Somehow the battery is communicating with the computer. I bought the battery with the laptop so it is a Lenovo product. I called Lenovo Partners to fix my computer and it's expensive because my warranty expired. One guy suggested that I reverse the update of the BIOS , but I can't find any previous versions of the Lenovo thinkpad E430 Bios on the Lenovo website. My BIOS is 2.54 . Do you know what the previous versions are? Do you know where I can find them on the Lenovo website? How would you fix this problem?

I have a ThinkPad Edge 13 (type 0197-6wg) that began having battery charge problems 2 days ago. When I plug in the AC-adapter (220 v AC ->20 v DC), no battery charging takes effect. Neither when the pc is shut down. When pointing at the battery status indicator in the status bar, it displays "10% left (connected, no charging)". When I dismount the charger, the battery level indicator goes down accordingly. I have the newest Lenovo patches installed, but when i run "battery test" in the Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools application, it displays, that the Power Management sw is mising. I've installed this (and older versions) again manually from the Lenovo support website, but with no effect. I've also tried other tips such as resetting the battery gauge, removing and cleaning the battery contacts etc., but with no effect. As the battery can maintain its charging level with the DC charger inserted, and is able of decharging without it, it suppose the error might be due to a firmware mismatch. Could it be related to the latest Power Management firmware update? Would like to hear from others with the same experience, and a valid clue on how to solve it! Regards, Soeren

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13 battery malfunction

Hi!What is the battery condition according to power manager? If it says poor,  then something is wrong with the batteries!  Else check by setting a manual full charge threshold in  Lenovo power  manager >advanced>battery>battery maintenance, also try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery?s when the laptop is powered on.You could also try the one on below linkhttp://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/plugged-in-not-charging-appea...and finally, remove Lenovo power manager and check if that solves that issueremoving Lenovo power manager did the trick for me when I was on remote with a custumer??.  Regards,Nithin

I received my thinkpad edge 11 with the 6-cell battery, which is OK, however it'd look much more "sexy" with the 3-cell battery used in most of the advertising shootings. I've been looking for it in several places but it doesn't seem to even exist! Have you seen/bought one of these? if so, where can I get one? Thanks. Gracias.

Hello everyone,I have a Thinkpad Edge 15 ( the first generation aka E50 ).I just learnt about the feature known as battery stretch found on the other thinkpads. I have the latest version of Power Manager ( 6.40) but I don't have the option to enable it. Battery stretch is just not there.I really would need the feature to disable all useless background services to save battery life.I have a feeling that this is just a software limitation , and if someone knows how to make it available, i'd be sooo grateful! Are there any regedit values to mess up with ?Or else, are there any alternatives to that feature on the web?Thank you/

So I got myself the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 the other day, specific model being "431929G", along with it I got myself a 9-cell battery instead of the included 6-cell as well as this additional "slice battery" solutions which you attach at the bottom of the computer using the docking port it seems? The box which this slice battery came in was marked model 57Y4545, the piece of battery inside however says FRU: 42T4739? I guess and hope it's the same thing?  It does attach to the bottom of my W510 without any issues whatsoever, I lock it in place so I get that green indicator which should mean it's supposed to function? But it doesn't.. ThinkVantage Power Manager do pick up the battery but it's just standing there at 12% battery with no activity? Even after the main 9-cell is fully charged it wont start to charge the slice battery? I did even remove the main 9-cell in order to see whether or not that would change anything, but it didn't? And if I remove the power cord when running only the slice battery the W510 will just drop dead? So it's not charging, neither is it providing my W510 with any more battery life? It just sits the with 12% battery with no activity whatsoever, no charging or usage at all?

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 6 Cell battery back up

Battery life strongly depends on how you use it.Watching movies/playing games reduces battery life. I am getting  a little less then 3 hours with my normal use (with WiFi). Definitely not 4.If you use it just to read books in the dark I guess you can have >=4 hours.   Mine is Edge 14'' with Intel i3

I've had my laptop for about a little over a month as of writing this, the battery and everything has satisfied my needs, Originally the battery would last around 5 hours and as of a few hours ago when it suddenly hit critical battery level it can only last 3 hours. My battery capaicity is  62160mWh and has decreased by 35.3% over the past month and is currently sitting at 40220 mWh. Is this normal and am I able to claim a warranty on just the battery without costs?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E130 - Faulty battery

Good day and welcome to the community.

I believe that the battery warranty is 1 year, standard, unless you extended it during system purchase. I would recommend that you call Service to describe the battery wear you're seeing and let them advise you on next steps.

I've searched everywhere online but can't find the answer (without paying for it, which I don't really trust).  My 14" Edge 0199 currently has the 6-cell 4400 mah 10.8 volt battery in it.  Can I safely put and use a 9-cell 6600 mah 11.1 volt battery in it? And will that effectively increase my battery time?  Right now, when I start using it (e.g., on an airplane), it says it's good for three hours, but I start getting the low battery alert at about 2 hours.  When this happens, I'm usually editing photos and videos after a vacation, not watching a DVD or movie saved to the hard drive. What am I doing that drains a battery the fastest (I think viewing a DVD is the worst, so I don't do that)?  On the way to the vacation, I like to play computer golf (Links) or Scrabble.  Are they a major battery drain due to the visuals? Thanks for any assistance! golfmobile

Hello there! I have a Thinkpad Edge 14/15 and recently bought a new battery to replace the original one that has a rather terrible battery life. (Used to go for about 2.5hrs before it needed a recharge, now it's around 20-30mins) The battery I bought is the Thinkpad Battery 25 4 Cell: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... Upon putting the new battery in, the battery indicator showed it at 0% and displayed an error stating that a Battery Error was detected and to replace the battery. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do with this, so any help would be most appreciated! Thanks in advance!

With this laptop, the CPU usage rises significantly whenever the battery is charging. If I'm on running on battery power or it's fully charged, I don't have this problem. The CPU stays at 2-3% while browsing the internet, for example. But browsing the internet while the battery is charging will send the CPU up to 90-100%. It's not just browsing the internet, but any task, such as running Sony Vegas, using Skype, watching a movie, etc. Again, this only happens while the battery is charging. Everything runs much, much slower. All power management settings are identical whether it be running on battery or charging with the AC adapter, so it's not that. I am also using the 65w power adapter that was supplied with the computer, and the adapter becomes very hot to the touch while charging. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Hi, nitroxreaction

Could you possibly post your machine type and model, as well as your operating system so we can get a better idea of what could be causing this issue? Also, I'd recommend making sure all the drivers and the BIOS are up to date, and those can all be found here.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Hi, Yesterday, I installed BIOS Update Utility (h0uj05ww.exe) version 1.18 on my Thinkpad Edge E530. After the installation, my battery is stuck at 98%. The status shows plugged in, not charging.I uninstalled and reinstalled Power Manager version 6.36 and Lenovo Power Management Driver version 1.65.05.21. But, it didn't help. (FYI, I have customized the settings to start charging at 90% and stop charging at 100%) I also tried removing and reinserting the battery and reconnecting the power source. But, it didn't help either. Any idea ? Please help. Thanks in advance. Regards,Umang.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 - Battery stuck at 98%

Hi Umang,

Welcome to the community.

As per your concern battery is not charging properly it shows shows plugged in.

If your battery has much lesser capacity or does not charge at certain level any longer, you may want to perform a gauge reset on the battery.
Double-click the green "Power Manager" battery icon near the Windows' system clock, usually at the lower-right corner of the screen. If you cannot find this icon, click "Start," "All Programs," "Access IBM" and "Power Manager."Click the "Battery Information" tab at the top.Click "Battery Maintenance."Click "Perform Reset," and then click "Continue" on the confirmation dialog box. This procedure will take more time to complete, and you should not use your ThinkPad during that time. You will be prompted when the battery reset is complete.

Make sure AC adapter plug in when performing gauge reset, do not close system.

Regards,
Sameer

Hi, I have a ThinkPad Edge E530 (3259) that's just out of warranty and my battery is not lasting long enough anymore. I purchased a 3rd party battery and the battery works (the laptop stays on when the a/c power is unplugged), but it doesn't charge.  When I reboot my laptop, I get a BIOS error message (well before Windows loads) that a 3rd party battery has been detected and the battery may not charge.  I have to hit ESC to continue. Is Lenovo really restricting me from using a 3rd party battery?  If so, I think that's a terrible thing to do to its users. Is there any way around this?  I've removed the power mananger software, but that didn't help.   I wouldn't think it would have helped since it's a BIOS arror message that I'm getting. Perhaps there's an older BIOS I can flash that doesn't have this protection? What exactly is this block looking for?  If I get a 3rd party battery with the exact same voltage and MAH, will that work?  I think this one has a slightly higher MAH rating.  But, I don't want to order something else and spend more money if Lenovo has some other way to determine it's genuine? The battery provider sent me a whole big lenovo checklist of things to try to get the battery to charge, but none of them worked. Any other ideas? I'm definitely not happy here.  Hopefully someone can assist. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Charging 6-cell battery for first time for Thinkpad Edge

On the way to buying my Edge, I purchased a Toshiba Satellite at Best Buy.  I took it back within a few days because there was a problem with the harddrive.  Anyway, one of the Geek Squad representatives (Geek Squad handles all technical related issues for Best Buy customers) told me to charge the battery fully prior to first use, then every day for the first month--but at a minimum of two to three times--use the battery up completely and recharge to full.  This will prolong the life of your battery.  He told me people think they are doing good by leaving their laptop plugged in all the time and the opposite is true.  A battery won't hold a charge if you keep it plugged in.  I thought that was pretty interesting! I can attest to the accuracy of this gentleman's information.  I have a Vaio laptop that absolutely can't hold a charge.  It doesn't last ten minutes.  I've kept it plugged into the wall almost constantly.  I had no idea!  I almost did a forehead smack right there in the store when I realized.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13 - Battery Firmware update not working

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You need to have latest BIOS version (which is 1.20 6ZET...) and Power Management driver.

See below text:

"Lenovo has bundled the necessary dependencies and the battery firmware update into a common package. Customers who prefer to download a single file may download the appropriate package for their type of system. These "dependency wrapper" programs have the following basic procedure:

Check the Power Management driver version. Update if necesesary.
Get the current BIOS and embedded controller version.* This requires another driver, the Lenovo System Interface driver. If this driver is not present, version 1.02 (81vu13ww) will be installed. This driver is part of the "Hotkey Features Integration" package, but only the System Interface driver is installed.
If necessary, update BIOS to the minimum version supporting battery firmware update. A system reboot is required if the BIOS is updated. The battery firmware update will automatically continue after rebooting.
Update the battery firmware. A system shutdown is required after the battery firmware update. The system will not automatically turn back on after being shut down.

Please click here for more detailed operation of the dependency wrapper programs."

Hope this helps.

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... This happened to me today. The solution is to restart the computer and enter the BIOS.  Then use the arrow keys to move to the config tab, then down to the power option, hit enter, scroll down to the disable built-in battery, hit enter, then follow dirctions on the right.  You will unplug the power cord to shut down the computer and when you plug it back in and turn it back on the battery will be recognized.  if not , try the process again as it took me two tries.  hope this helps.

I couldn't be less satisfied. I bought this from newegg.com, new in the box, for a work laptop. I'm a real estate agent and forty agents work in my office. Some of them use Lenovo products, which are working fine. I got the laptop out of the box on 9/28/12 and when trying to connect to the wireless at work, it keeps connecting briefly, then dropping the connection. I called service and got a case number. They tried to remote in and take over to see what the problem was, but couldn't. We went through Thinkvantage to reset to the factory settings. After that, the unit wouldn't even recognize that there was a network to connect to! They sent me a box last week to return it to service center in Atlanta. Tracking of the package was easy and they sent it back with a page showing the parts they replaced:  WLAN card and WIFI were corrected. Connected wirelessly again this morning. Same problem. Won't stay connected! So I called to speak again to service today, they tried to remote into my computer to fix it, but it wouldn't stay connected long enough to even remote into it! They said they'd replace it...gave me the ph# for sales. 1-866-428-4465. This is a call center in India. They tell me they cannot honor the warranty there, to call Lenovo Partners Network at 1-877-536-9955. I did, Matt at that number was nice, but he said I have to call newegg, have THEM call him to get a DOA form, so they can send me a replacement. Honestly...I would rather buy something OTHER... But you need to know few things before you take a decision to install the non-lenovo product. Any functionally equivalent product, program, or service that does not infringe any Lenovo intellectual property right may be used instead. However, it is your responsibility to evaluate and verify the operation of any other product, program, or service.

Regarding the OS installation in SSD, OS will only boot up faster with a solid-state drive. That being said, if you perform any operating system related task that needs to retrieve data from the drive, it will be much faster than if your OS was on the HDD. That being said, if you only care about loading subsequent programs (or logistically prefer keeping your OS separate), you can easily keep the SSD as a secondary drive, only using it for certain programs/tasks. The whole point of a solid-state drive is to decrease application loading times

Please let us know, whether the above steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

I am presently researching to purchase a laptop for my wife at Christmas who is a teacher thus she will need to access the internet, do Office work, grading, emails, research, etc., but no gaming at all.

Will be running 7 64 OS, with 4 gigs of RAM, and hopefully a 7200 rpm hd. Leaning towards the i5 processor.

The Thinkpad Edge is part of Lenovo's excellent T Series but somewhat less expensive. Looking at current configurations it seems it will deliver what I am looking for but I know nothing of the quality build.

Would love to hear back from people who have used this series and/or from ITs who repair laptops for their insights.

Thanks!

I recently bought a Lenovo thinkpad edge 11 with the core i3 380um and windows 7 64bt HP, the NVYGMH model. I updated the ram from 2gb to 4gb. I used a Kingston valueRam 2gb 1066mhz DDR3 soDIMM. Since i first used it, it has been very slow. Sometimes it runs great the first few minutes but then you see the visual effects of windows 7 start to feel sluggish, and the performance of the system goes down. I did run the tas manager, when its slow cpu usage is constantly around the 25 percent. I updated all the drivers and installed a new bios. I tried two different virus scanners. Avira and Avast. I also tried two different browsers but the problem still excist. The only software on the notebook i installed is dropbox, a virus scanner and firefox. Some websites give me little problems but some are really slow, like facebook. Also some (not all)  youtube movies seem to be corrupt, i get weird colors. I think it is something with the videocard. But the driver is up to date. Also the startup of the lenovo toolbox and power manager is really slow, but maybe thats normal. I am not sure what to do next, so i hope someone can help me, at this moment my notebook gives me a mixe feeling. I really like the build quality and how it looks an what it can do, but most of the times it feels slower than my old atom n270 notebook.

Do you have two antiviruses installed? That'd be a very bad thing to do.If not, try doing a total restore to factory, running ThinkVantage System Update, then Windows Update, and use it for a while before installing any other software.

My brother got this laptop as a gift but it stopped booting after a few uses, it will just show the name and say press enter to interrupt boot, I do not know if it's his motherboard or not and would like to know what is up with his laptop. Some suggestions would help as to how I can fix this or get help in fixing it, only recently has he asked and it's been months since it stopped so some help would be appreciated. Also I should mentioned i've never used a thinkpad before.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge will not boot at all

It's pretty difficult to guess what might be wrong without some testing/investigation. The fact that you see a splash screen suggests that the motherboard's video and bios is working. If you are so inclined you could... Press on ON buttom and immediately press F12. Note - you must be pressing 'Fn' button at the lower left when pressing the F12.  This should get to the Boot device list.  If you have a bootable DVD, say from a OS try seeing if the DVD drive works.  If so, chances are there is a problem with your hard disk.  Maybe just a connector or maybe a failed drive. At that point you could remove the back cover and unseat/reseat the drive connector and see it that helps. It could also just be a necessary file in the Windows boot process is corrupted.  The thinkpad has multiple features to allow recovery such as factory recovery disks, Onetouch backup/restore, etc.  Of course, you have to apply those fairly soon after getting the computer. If any of this sounds confusing, then maybe finding a tech to look at it is a better idea. Hope this helps some.

With all power saving features active (lowered CPU clock speed, 50hz screen refresh rate .etc) I could get around 5 hours of battery while casually browsing the web or while doing some light gaming. Now, Almost 9 months later, Is it a miracle if I can get even 2 hours of battery life with the same usage and power saving features. Even while idling at the desktop is the avarage battery life around 3 hours at best. I find that having the battery life reduced by half in under a year time rather quick. Even if I use the thing almost everyday.I initially thought that it might have something to do with how the laptop is nearly always connected to the wall outlet. So I decided to use the battery utility that comes with the laptop to re-calibrate the battery. But this gave no improvement. I also checked if there were any programs running that could cause this but neither I nor my malware scanners could find a possible culprit. You might say it's because of poor usage because I use the laptop mostly while the charger is connected and rarely let the battery fully discharge before recharging it (although I usually use it until Windows goes into hibernation once every week) . But even if this would be true (I can't really find any prove... Read more

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 Battery dead after firmware update 1.13

Hi. I just upgraded my notebook (ThinkPad Edge 14", E40) from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit few days ago. After the upgrade, the touchpad gesture worked (e.g. swipe from right edge shows the charm bar) but the battery didn't charge. I thought it was the problem of battery, so I sent it to service center to check it. (But from the Power Manager program, the charge cycle was less than 50 and very unlikely that the problem was caused by the battery.) Few days later, I got my notebook back (yesterday). Service center said that they can charge the computer with Windows 7 (using their hard disk with Windows 7 on it), so they suggested me to reinstall my system. I then refresh the system using Windows 8 built-in function (which could be found in PC settings/ General/ Refresh computer). After that, the problem was not solved, in addition, the touchpad gesture was gone. (So I wasted my money for nothing... :-( In short, here are the problems with my computer:Battery doesn't charge, even the level dropped to 30% and I have AC power plugged in.Touchpad gesture is gone, even I have installed UltraNav driver through Windows Update.Do anyone experience similar issues? I read a few pages on this site and found that some drivers are said to be compatible with Windows 8 (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT072024), should I install the Power Management Driver? And for the touchpad gesture, someon... Read more

The pm-driver seems not to work (-> WINDWOS XP). CPU frequency is always at 1,9GHz (2,5 GHz) and energie profiles which are set in (lenovo) energie manager have no effect. In power-on-mode display is ok, but in battery mode its very dark (no effect with f6/f7 without fn). How can i increase display brightness in battery mode? Is there a registration key i could change? Or tool? Or newer drivers? (I have solved the CPU frequency problem with the tool k10stat.)
