Loose Hinge - Can be repaired under Warranty?

Question: Loose Hinge - Can be repaired under Warranty?

Hi, I have noticed that the hinges of my laptop are relatively loose, compared to when I first bought it.I still have no problems using the laptop, but loose hinge is not the most pleasant thing for a laptop. Is it covered by warranty?Or, can I tighten the hinge by myself? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Loose Hinge - Can be repaired under Warranty?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Loose Hinge - Can be repaired under Warranty?

How loose? Depending on the region of the country, this may or may not be covered under warranty. The hinge has to be swapped, it can't be tightened.

Hello, I bought the T61 in 2008 with 3 year warranty in USA. My T61 is showing the loose hinge problem which has been encountered by many other forum users. Right now I'm in Chennai, India and the Lenovo warranty center in Alwarpet, Chennai says the hinge problem is not covered under warranty. Could any one from Lenovo confirm this for me. Thank you, Thaniks

Answer:T61 Loose Hinge - Does the warranty cover this issue?

Well i was once told that Lenovo don't cover hinge problem by the Lenovo service personnel, but then on my second attempt and through some coercion they said yes. Mark_Lenovo did mention that the loose hinge is within the normal repair parameter, while many people in the USA have the hinge problem repaired under warranty. This is the message that Mark_Lenovo sent me regarding the issue of hinge and warranty. ------------------------ The hinges should be covered under warranty.  Sometimes the staking of the pin inside the hinge fails - we have several designs - some are "D" shaped which can become rounded, and some are epoxied I believe.   It is also possible that the screws have loosened which hold the hinge to the LCD frame or to the chasis - the locktite did not hold.  If you are in warranty, I would expect us to cover this unless there were visible signs of abuse (like dent or abrasion from being dropped). ----------------------------

If the bezel is separating from the screen, it isn't the first report.  I don't understand why Support would deny service unless they are suggesting you return it.

I purchased my HP Envy laptop on October 3, 2012. On  August 19, 2013, the right hinge broke and luckily it was still under warranty.. I took it back to Staples and they sent it to HP for a product repair. My CSO Order Number was [Personal Information Removed] with a Serial Number of [Personal Information Removed]. According to the receipt, it states that the Bezel and Back Cover were replaced.
This right hinge is broken again, and the right side back cover has separated from the front. I found a small piece of black plastic, so it has broken somewhere. It has affected the icons at the bottom right as I can't left click on them to open the icons anymore. I can, however, right click and choose an option. I have taped the back to the front because I am afraid that the screen will be damaged. I don't even take my laptop anywhere..It stays on a side table open at all times.. I love this computer and an very frustrated that this has happened again.. I have other HP equipment and computers, and have never had a problem with them..
I suppose I can leave the  tape on it and never close it again, but I can't even take it on vacation now..
I will not pay to have it repaired..I will continue to use it as is and hope for the best. I will, however, not purchase another HP product in the future..
I feel that all of the other people with this problem should be given new laptops.. obviously the repair doesn't work.

Maybe someone can offer advice or help on this issue. I purchased an Envy M6 back in late 2014 - everything was fine for about 8 months. Then in June 2015 I notice the case at the hinge is separating - so I had it repaired privatelyby a repair company (had to have it done very quickly, and they did a great job on the repair!) Everything is fine again for another 6 months, then December 2105 itbreaks again!  So it's off AGAIN to be repaired.  I get it back, looks good, no issues. Another 9 months go by, and now (Oct. 2016) the case/hinge is breaking yet again! Seriously?!?!?! I really love this laptop and I depend on it daily!  Other than this issue I haven't had any otherproblems with it - but this flaw is just way too much to bear.  I can't stomach spending more moneyto repair this same problem for a thrid time. It's never been dropped, or had any other major physical damage to it, and ever since the first repair I'vealways been extar gentle with opening and closing the lid in hopes of prolonging it's life. I don't know if this issue has been resolved in newer models, but frankly I don't know that I'd ever spendthe money for another HP laptop after this experience.  Anyone else having similar issues.  Is there someone at HP that can help with my issue? Thanks!

The right hinge on my M 30 is to loose. I have tryed to dismantle the keyboard without succes, what to do?

Answer:Hinge on Satellite M30 is loose

Hi there,

the problem is that you cannot repair it only by tighten some screws. If the hinge on this model is loose then you will need new hinges and to exchange them, the whole machine must be disassembled since the hinges are partially under the palm rest and on the lcd installed.

So, if you want to fix that you should search for an technician which can fix it. Better solution would be to contact an authorized service partner:

The Thinkpad hinge are renowned for its toughness any play or sloppiness in a new hinge, means problems, even my old 4 year old already dead T42 have no play in the hinge whatsoever. My T400 does not have any play in the hinge whatsoever.  I had a hinge in mine T60 replaced under warranty due to the play, and now it is wonderful once again.

Its been a great laptop and I've generally been very happy with it.Unfortunately, about a month ago the hinge that connects the screen to the base of the laptop has become so loose that the LCD portion of the laptop will no longer stay upright without being propped up against something solid.  I purchased it from Newegg and they don?t except returns after the first month for laptops. Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks

I have had my HP Omen for about 8 or 9 months and slowly the hinge is becoming loose on the screen. So basically if i grab the screen to tilt downward it will move about and inch forward before the grips the hinge and start moving. LIkewise if I hold the laptop by its base and tilt it back and forth the screen will loosely flop back and forth about an inch without affecting the position of the actual hinge. Please advice me on how I can rectify this. I plan to have the computer for at least 2 or 3 more years. Best regards, Scott Georgson

One of the hinges on my two week old Yoga 11s is looser than the other. As I open the lid and push it back, the left hinge rotates somewhat, but the right one stays firm. Finally, once I reach 180 degrees, they level out. I can also equalise them by closing the screen back up somewhat after opening it. It's not a huge difference between the hinges, but I'm aware of it, and it's kind of annoying given i've only just bought it.  Is this single-hinge looseness normal? Is it worth getting serviced, or are both hinges going to be as loose as barn doors in a few months time?

I am scared if I do not fix this the continous stress on the hinge will eventually cause the lcd screen to fall off the hinge and that if I do not fix this the other hinge will wear out faster by having to do all the work of the loose hinge.  I have looked everywhere online and could not find a video of how to get to the screws on my laptop.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Answer:X230T Loose hinge?

Hi Bjc92,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m really sorry to hear that hinges of your Lenovo X230T had become loose after continuous switching between tablet and laptop mode.

Please refer to pages 67 & 103 in this user guide to see how to remove or fix hinge cap/ hinges.

Also, note that the hinges on laptops often become loose through wear and tear and will result in a screen that will not stay in place. In that case, tightening the hinges alone might not help resolve the issue. The hinges may have to be replaced.

Hope this information helped!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Is it normal for some of the hinges to be slightly loose on the yoga 900? I wasn't sure since not all of them are loose. Also, I have one of the caps on the edge loose as well which I can take off and put back on (without it falling off easily). After I have been using spectre x360 for a couple weeks, I noticed that the hinge is quite loose particularly at 90 to 180 degrees. And I can wobble it at some point without using any force. Moreover, when I hold the base while the screen is more than 90 degrees and shake the notebook a little bit, the screen will bend far to the back. It looks like the hinge is too loose and can not hold the weight of the screen. Is there any way to tighten it?Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I can remove the harddrive but I just want to double check to make sure. Also, After my warranty wears off, I eventually want to be able to fix a wobbly screen myself. Does anyone know where I can find a set of instructions to tighten the hinges?

I've had my Y550 for about 3 months now and everythings been fine with the construction of the computer. However, I bought this computer because the screen hinge on my last computer slowly broke down to the point where it was difficult to keep the screen in one position because it flapped around so much. Now, only 3 months in, the screen hinge is loosening quickly,, and moves back and forth over an inch, or several degrees. I thought this was a good computer. Now I'm worried the same thing that took 3 years to happen to my old laptop is going to happen within 6 months on this one. Is this fixable with a quick fix or can i send it in on warranty?

My Asus laptop is a few months old and the screen hinge seems to be getting looser and looser. It's not falling over or anything, but definately not as steady as it once was - you can wobble the screen a bit backwards and forth when it's up.My laptop is very similar to this:click herebut I'm not sure how to tighten up my hinges as I can't find how to get to them - presuming that it's loose hinges rather than just worn hinges. It's not a problem at the moment but I'd rather make sure I can fix it now, and if I can't do myself, send it off while it's still in warranty.Any help would be appreciated, cheers.

The left hand hinge on my wife's HP Spectre X360 is loose. It looks like the right hand hinge is taking most of the weight and the screen leans slightly as a result of this. It has been like this for a number of months, but is starting to get worse. Unfortunately, I didn't report it previously and the warranty ran out just over 2 weeks ago. My concern is that not only is the left hand hinge getting looser, the additonal weight on the right hand hinge will lead excessive wear and the risk that this hinge will fail as well. is there any way HP will repair the faulty hinge, as it appears to be a known issue.

The right hinge of my HP pavillion m6 1035dx entertainment notebook pc. What is the most economic way of fixing this simple issue. I figure I would go straight to HP as, business to customer, to ensure a better customer experience that is more frictionless with less obstacles. I bought this laptop as manufactured refurbed and assume maybe the hinge was loose in the first place because I have kept good care. I plan on upgrading the internal hardware as well but I need to make sure that the hinges and rest of external casing is dexterous and durable. Moreover, I can't find a reputable third party that I trust. So, I am going directly to HP. Please reply to me and give what options I can use. I figured I can just send my Laptop to HP and HP fixes it and sends it back or if there is a reputable third party HP can recommend. However, I strongly believe that HP is a better option in both HP and my interests. Third party is just a middle man that costs more not only for me but as well as for HP. Thus, no need for a middleman and I strongly believe in a simple customer experience and customer relations. otherwise, HP will be tarnished in customer service. I can't even talk to a representative about my issue. At least, from my experience on the Website and is just forums. Please reply back on my hinge issue it is a very simple task and should be easy peasy on a two way road of customer to brand image.

Hi: I received x1 carbon touch in late December. First I ran into touch screen issue. This issue was fixed by running a calibration program I got from my internal Lenovo support. Yesterday when I opened the laptop I heard a cracking noise and the hinge separated from the cover and screen is also loose. The screen is not cracked and laptop still works.Whenever I open the laptop the screen separates from the bezel. I push them together and they snap but always separate when I open or close the laptop.I showed it to my technician at work and he told me that warranty will not cover this issue as it is physical damage. There was not physical damage to my X1 carbon touch. Now we have to pay for new lcd bezel, hinge kit and rear LCD cover. These may be expensive and I have no way of knowing if this will happen again., After using Lenovo PC's for the past 10 years this is unexpected. I saw one more person who can the exact same problem. Let me know if you have any suggestion for me.

Answer:x1 carbon loose hinge bezel

Had the same problem on my daughter's X1 Carbon Touch (34xx). Disassembled per the hardware manual to see what was wrong. Turns out that the two right-hand-side hinge screws had detached from the cover because the brass fitting into which they were screwed had become separated from the cover (they were just wedged into a plastic hole), effectively freeing the cover. Not impressed with the design. Am investigating brass-to-plastic glues...

The screw on the back under the right side hinge has become loose and fallen out twice.I put it back in the first time nice and tight and tightened all the other screws. It just fell out again!  This is with gentle handling.  And it took less than a month to wiggle loose.Would using a little Locktite blue on the screw when I put it back void my warrantee?

Answer:Y50-70 loose bottom screw under hinge.

No, the use of Locktite blue won't void the warranty and is probably a very good idea since this is a reoccurring problem. Be sure to just use a tiny dab on the threads.

Answer:X121e loose hinge as on the picture

the hinge mechanism cracked the casing, usually squeezing the split casing won't help with the problem.

I power up my DV7 laptop but the screen doesn't come on readily. I noticed that the left hinge near the power button is not stable. It appears to be moving rather than pivoting. If I move the screen a bit, it comes on. Any movement of the screen causes it to either flicker or go blank. I connected the laptop to a external monitor and it works okay. Can someone tell me what might be inside the laptop that would cause this? Is there a switch or contact that tells the system that the laptop is open? I hesitate to try opening the back or to send it out for repair before understanding what I', facing. This machine also has a tendency to run hot. Is that the norm? Fan seems to be working but I put a cooler underneath just in case. Anyone out there have experience with this type of problem?

I'm looking to buy a new warranty for my laptop. I own an HP Omen that was sent to me on Jan 30, 2015 after my previous laptop, a pavilion, stopped working and was replaced via the warranty on that computer. The extra year of warranty that comes with a replacement laptop expired on Jan 30, 2016. My question is, if I were to purchase a warranty for this computer, what would the start date be? Would it be Jan 30, 2015, the date I received this computer? Or would it reset all the way back to when I purchased the pavilion, in which case, it would be totally useless and would have already expried.

Hello to all,

I have a 7 yr old Sony Vaio GR370 laptop with a loose hinge. When
the laptop is open at any viewable angle, there is about 1-1.5in.
of "play" on the LCD portion of the lid. It stays up fine - it's more of an
annoyance then anything else.

Is there any way to tighten/repair/replace the hinges ?

thanks in advance !

Answer:Solved: Sony Vaio - Loose hinge

I'm just guessing, but I think you're missing a retaining screw that holds the hinge post in place.
Look at the back of the machine to see if there is a place for a screw that is missing.

Good evening, i own a X200t on which the hinge appears to be kind of loose. When opening the screen and letting it in a position before 90 degrees, it falls back some centimeters (3-4 cm). Also, when standing on a table in laptop-mode, the display is wobbling with every little movement of the desk. It's annoying (esp. when using it in train) compared to my former X200s, which was rock-solid. Is this typical or should i call Lenovo Service ? Kind regards, pepun.

I don't think that's normal.  I have a new X200t and the display does not wabble like that, although it's *nowhere* near as sturdy as a T-series that I have access to.

Hi,  I have had my spextre for just over a year now. About 6 months or so ago I started to notice the screen wobble a little more, I played it off as nothing. Not so long ago I notice the left hinge is loose, and that is the source of the wobble on the screen. It seems as though the left hinge can be pushed in towards the laptop a couple of mm signlalling to me it is not properly secured. Is there a fix for this? TIA!

I purchased a Spectre x360 almost two years ago (Sept. 2015) and the laptop worked fine. After about two months, I noticed the hinges did not line up as cleanly but the laptop still opened, closed and folded back without issue. I recently opened my laptop and noticed that the right hinge is shaky and that the screen wobbles a lot because of it. This seems to be a purely physical issue as I "pop" the hinge back into place and it secures. While the screen is still shaky, I am less worried about it this way. I have never dropped my laptop, haven't travelled with it and it sits flat on my desk 99% of the time. How should I proceed? Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi,

the hinge on my 2410-603 notebook has worked loose to the point where it will not stay up unless i lean it against something. I was wondering if i am able to tightenen this somehow or whether it would need replacing. Anyone have a guide of how to get at the hinge??, or anyone know how much a replacement one is likely to cost??.

I have searched on the net however havn't been able to find anything as yet.

Thank you in advance,
Jamie

Answer:Loose/Broken hinge on my Satellite 2410-603

Hi,

unfortunately it?s not possible to tighten it, so you will have to purchase new hinges.
I suggest you following:

Look at ebay for such machine you have (maybe a defective would be good) and let a technician exchange it or ask an authorized service partner how many an exchange of the hinges will cost.
If you need a link to find a ASP then you can try it here:

Good luck

Hi, It seems that others have had this problem with a loose hinge too. My screen started fading to white (with faint vertical lines). At first I could jiggle the display and the display would correct but over time it's gotten worse. My computer runs fine otherwise, but I need to use an external monitor or I can't see anything. I'm suspecting a loose connection but can't find a good video showing how to fix this. To any staff, Long story short, the hinge on my Thinkpad T61p were getting loose (it was moving back and forth) and upon a quick serach, apparently it was a known issue on these laptops. As my warranty was nearing its end, I quickly called Lenovo to have this repaired. Because I was promised that this repair is going to be finished within 5-7 business days, I decided to go ahead and send it away depite that my major requires it 24/7. I've received a box next day and I sent it away on Jan 9th, 2008. I called in today to see what's happening but this employee, who rather got really irritated that I called in, couldnt find my info for 30 mins. After finally finding my info, he mentioned that the hinge is backordered. I politely asked him when I can get the laptop back but he said it could take days.. weeks or possibly up to months.  The sole reason why I sent this laptop for a repair was because they said the turnaround repair would be fast and I believed his word. It's quite dissapointing to hear these kind of delays in repair process when I need this laptop ASAP. There are actually 2 ongoing cases regarding my laptop but none of them are being solved at the moment. The 6 cell battery, which just died a few days ago, was replaced by a 9 cell from Lenovo. I called about this issue as well and hopefully they can get this straightened out. How long does it take for a "back ordered" parts to arrive at the depot? It's really hard to imagine how the depo... Read more

So I got a brand new13 inch HP Spectre X360 on August 24. I really wanted this laptop over the Mac because I felt it was lighter than a Pro, more powerful than an Air, had a great display, plus was more vessatile than the two due to its rotation capability. To my disappointment, I quickly found out the trackpad seemed loose (you could feel a slight rattle by lightly pressing down the middle). 15 days later, I exchanged it at Best Buy only to find, low and behold, my new one having the same exact issue with the trackpad. Not only that, but I feel that even the screen hinge is ever so slightly loose. Not that it moves in laptop, tent, or presentation mode -- but when I type quick I feel the screen shake just a tiny bit. Moreover, when in tablet mode, the two halves of the computer (the screen and back of the keyboard underneath it) don't stick together. They pry apart about an inch. I called HP and they said it could be my particular local Best Buy bought a bad bunch or something? I did see other threads on here with people complaining about the trackpad, and some have suggested that there are some 'malfunctioned' unitss and that if one were to keep exchanging, they would eventually get a good one. I also have slight cackling of speakers without headphones when playing music. So should I exchange for a second time? Would Best Buy be upset -- do they have a limit on this sort of thing? I have had my laptop for just over a year and I have never transported it anywhere, as I just leave it on my desk. However, when I opened up my laptop today, the left hinge came off loose. Now the left corner of the screen is very loose from the screen border. Would HP be able to fix it, even though the warranty for this laptop has just finished 2 months ago? I am concerned, because I haven't done anything to it and it was very sudden. I'm pretty sure that it's a manufacture fault and this is an issue. The product has become unfit for purpose, because I can't close it and take it with me anywhere now.  I would like to hear back from someone. Thanks

Hello, The hinge on my HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 has been loose (or broken?) for quite some time. It caused the bottom of my laptop to split open on the side which has the power button (left side).  The laptop was not dropped or damaged in other ways, before I knew it I noticed the issue. First I noticed the screen feeling loose, but only recently I paid closer attention and saw the hinge was loose. Other than the hinge issue, the computer is in good condition and works great. I would hate to lose it because of the hinge. From reading the forum, it seems to be a very common issue with this particular type of laptop. Therefore I am wondering if anything has or can be done to help us who have encountered this issue. Thank you!

I bought my Hp envy about 18 months ago and a few months ago the hinge started getting loose and I noticed that a few screws were missing. This was a few weeks after It had come back for repair for a bios issue and recently I noticed that the actual bottom plastic was starting to crack and eventually the plastic was sticking out and I struggled to push it back in like I usually did. Ive seen that this issue is extremely common with these laptops and most have said in the HP forums that its a design issue. So I don't want to continue using the laptop in case something major gets damaged. Ive seen in other forums that some users have had there laptops replaced but all im wanting is a quick easy fix. Thanks

They probably replaced the motherboard.   It is possible the board installed does not have the correct key programmed into the UEFI bios to match the version of windows on your machine.   Your unit originally  shipped with windows 8.1 standard editon.     Maybe they substituted your part for the same thing, but with a 8.1 pro license programmed into it. Or if they reimaged it they might have used the wrong image.  See which version is on the unit by checking in the computer properties screen.   Should be 8.1 Standard.

Pretty simple;
Warranty was about to expire in August, sent out for repair in July to fix the hinge.
The problem was that the hinge was loose at a certain angle and taught at others (the precursor to the broken hinge of death us Y510 owners seem to be plagued with.)
They fixed the issue with flying colors...kudos to them!
4 Months gone, a semester of college up I take my laptop out and open it up, I hear a loud SNAP and now the hinge opens 180 degrees.

This is about how far the Y510 will open before hitting the stop on the hinge.

I recently purchased the latest Yoga 900 from the Canadian Microsoft store (online).  It is the only option for a 2-in-1 in Canada that you can order with 16GB RAM + 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD.  The laptop arrived quickly and everything is working as expected.  On the centre of the wristwatch hinge there is a type of mesh that goes from front to back that covers a portion of it. The mesh is not centered properly on my unit and it slightly protrudes out of the back of the hinge.  I realise that this is a minor issue, but I'm within Microsoft's 30 day return/exchange period.  The hinge does not appear to be loose, but i've only had the laptop for 3 days now. I took some pictures to help illustrate the issue and I'm curious to see if anyone else has noticed the samething.??????

As the title describes - a screw on my laptop has come loose and gone missing and now the bezel (the thin plastic cover surrounding the keyboard in case my use of bezel is wrong) has separated from the lower half of the casing on the upper right corner of my E145, above the kensington lock and mains input. The LCD hinge is now loose and lifts up when moved, the kensington lock housing also moves with it. This image shows the problem - that's the right side hinge, the separation can be seen at the top of the case and to the right of the kensington lock port, on the hinge itself. I haven't tampered with the screw in any way but did notice the bezel wasn't flush with the battery on this side (it is on the other hinge), so the screw has been loose for some time and finally worked its way free. I posted this thread before I realised the screw had gone but I might as well keep it up (if only to remind anyone else with this problem to check the screws ) but I have two questions: 1. In the event we're unable to find the screw, will it be possible to procure a replacement from Lenovo? When looking at the laptop from the bottom, the screw is located in the top left corner just above the rubber foot and battery release switch 1. 2. If the screw has come loose because the threading is damaged then this will need to be repaired. My laptop's warranty has not yet expired, will the warranty cover these repairs?

Hello,I own a Thinkpad X220 for about eight months now, i've been using laptops for over eight years now, love the X220.Now, to my amazement, last week i discovered that the plastic strip, that runs on the top part of the lid, has come loose on the right side.I contacted Lenovo support to report this problem, they requested i e-mail  them some photo's portraying the defect so they could take a look , so i did i sent them three pictures. The next day i got a call from Lenovo support. I was told that the defect on my machine was not covered by warranty, defects on the outside of the laptop (e.g. broken hinges, cracks in the base of the laptop) are simply not covered by the warranty. Now, i understand that there are defects that -especially when considering the circumstances in which they arose- are not covered by warranty, that being said, this defect is not caused by misuse on my part. This is simply a case of faulty manufacturing. There are in fact two other individuals who have complained about there X220 laptops displaying exactly the same symptoms as min does. The topic can be found hereWhat is even more remarkable, is that the terms of warranty donīt exclude defects to the outside of the laptop. There is a one year warranty on labor and parts and a parts only warranty in the second and third year, nothing that even remotely indicates that the defect my X220 suffers from is not covered. An English version of the Lenovo Limited Warranty can be found on this page. I am r... Read more

Answer:X220: Plastic strip loose - no warranty???

I had this same problem with my X201. I contacted lenovo after living with it for about six months, they said it was not covered under warranty. The crack was posing no functional problem and didn't progress further, but I bought a new replacement back cover from ebay for $35 since I wanted to resell the laptop. It was pretty easy to install and took about 90 minutes. I'd imagine the X220 would be no more difficult to repair this way.

Hey, I have a Lenovo T400 that's still under warranty. But I can't get Lenovo to send me replacement hinges, the hinges are so loose it's impossible to use the laptop normally. Lenovo keeps saying the hinges are not covered by the warranty when I call them. But I searched this forum and it seems like they are covered. How can I get Lenovo to send me the hinges? Can maybe someone on this board that works for Lenovo help me?

Answer:T400 under warranty has loose hinges. Lenovo wants me to pay.

You would need to send the laptop in for repair, Lenovo warranty service usually can't send the users the hinge for self replacement.

I bought a G570 on August 8th of 2011 and the computer so far has pulled through for me and met my expectations for it. However a few weeks ago my Hinge broke and I was still in warranty and I sent it in for repairs. While my computer was on its way to Texas via fed-ex i read a lot of horror stories of people with lenovo customer service and how laptops got lost and everything so I was a bit scared to send my laptop in. However all went well and I think Lenovo deserves a good post from me for their fast repair and great customer service. Every large company will have its gimmicks here and there because no one is perfect and from the service I received, good job lenovo! My only complaint was that it was hard to find the number to call to get my computer fixed haha.

Hi all, Recently I found that my T61 right LCD hinge was broken. The machine is still under warranty. I sent to the service centre and a few days later the person told me the hinge is not under warranty and I have to pay about 100 bucks USD to replace the part! I read through the warranty many times and 100% sure I didn't void it. My question: Is the hinge under warranty? Thanks. zhichien

Answer:Is T61 hinge broken under warranty?

The hinge is under warranty as far as material defects are concerned. But the most common case of hinge breakage is that the ThinkPad has been dropped. I don't know the situation in Singapore but here in Germany the manufacturer must verify that the problem is not his fault within the first year of warranty (and not the consumer). So my hinge got replaced on warranty. If you have evidence that the hinge broke without you handling your TP negligentyou probably have good chances to have the hinge replaced for free as well. The price of 100$ might sound high at first but if you take into account  that the complete display has to be disassembled and the structure frame needs to be replaced thats an okay price. However my TP came back from repair with the hinge even more broken then before.

I bought my thinkpad X230 in January 2013 with 3 year warranty and paid hefty price(USD 1.2K) for high reliability and good warranty services. Yesterday I observed that my bezel connected to top lid is coming off and I contacted lenovo to correct the issue before it detaches completely. I am told that this is physical damage and not covered under warranty and I will have to pay for it. I never mis-used the laptop. I am a regular user and used it for personal purposes. When I said that it is clear case of sub-standard product and poor workmanship, I was told that need to buy ADP warranty for physical damages. Funny, Thinkpad is supposed to be the reliable product which are tested for mil specification. And if the bezel is getting lose or coming out when the product is under warranty, it only shows the cheap manufacturing process used and poor workmanship. And moreover denial of warranty is disappointing. People pay hefty premium for reliability and good services and if you are not getting neither of them, i think one should move to other reliable vendors (apple etc). I am extremely sorry to be writing this, but lenovo just lost another professional for their poor service. And I will make sure that everyone I know do not buy thinkpad ever. Cheap chinese product.    Hi Neeraj, As per the snapshot, the issue with LCD bezel is caused by Physical damage and is not entitled for part replacement. Kindly visit our service center t... Answer:[X230]Loose Bezel-Denied Warranty-Thinkpad Failed

Hi Neerajmishra,  Welcome to the Lenovo Cumminity !  In regards of your pictures posted, if I'm correct they'll only lablel it as a "CID" - "Customer Induced Damage" if you physically dropped it in which is causing the LCD Bezel to be coming off. When you send in your unit the technicians will justify whether it is or not.  ADP is always good to get incase you do drop it and severly break it and several parts need to be replaced.  Because the support team can't look at a photo over the phone it's best you send in your computer cause at the point it would be cheaper just to get out of the way then it turning into a bigger problem. If and only if the technicans working on the unit determine that it wasn't phyiscally done then they'll repair it "under warranty" - in a timly manner !  Cheers !

Recently the hinges to the lid on my computer became loose, now they sort of "pop" whenever I open up the lid and continue to get looser. This is only from regular use, I haven't damaged the computer in any way by dropping it or anything. Checked online to see the status of my warranty and it's still good. Who do I contact and where do I take/send it to get it fixed?

I called Lenovo support and told them about two issues: a loose hinge and two bright pixels on the monitor. I was told that they would have to repair the hinge at the depot, so there was not much further troubleshooting. Today, I got an e-mail saying, "After further diagnosis,  our repair engineers found damages on your computer that is not covered by the Lenovo limited warranty" and provides a quote of $187 to repair the left hinge. It suggests I read what the warranty does not cover on the attached PDF. I can only assume they're referring to: "failure or damage resulting from misuse, abuse, accident, modification, unsuitable physical or operating environment, natural disasters, power surges, improper maintenance, or use not in accordance with product information materials". But the hinge came loose through normal use. So, two questions: Why did Lenovo originally claim that the hinge would be repaired under warranty then decide it wouldn't be?On what basis are they excluding this from warranty coverage? They attached the following picture. I'm not sure if that's standard or not. If not, I assume they are pointing out the damage to the case, which is a result of the broken hinge pushing up on it.Anyone else experience this? I mean, hinge defects seem to be very common, but was anyone unable to get them repaired under warranty?

Answer:Hinge not covered under warranty? Y470p

After 2.5 years of constant use and counting, my Y470 hasn't yet shown any signs of build defects. I treat mine like a baby and 100% made sure the lid aren't opened beyond 110 degrees from the closed position, especially after seeing this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Essential/Problem-with-Hinges-on-G570-model-laptop/td-p/... I always adjust the lid at the top center and never on the sides because I'm also concerned with the hinges of my Y470. It shares similar hinge design with the G47x and G57x series.

Dear community, The left hinge on my x121e suddenly came apart, due to no fault of mine (see picture). I sent it to Lenovo and they are saying it is not covered by the warranty because it is customer damage. Does anyone have any advice on how to confront them on this issue? Hey,My T400's hinge got loose (the left one), and the local service provider doesn't want to replace it, he says its not under warranty. After little search here, I found this problem common and lenovo's claims are common to, however in some way part of the people convinced lenovo local service to change it anyways. Anybody got any ideas\advices? Thanks, and sorry for the English  p.s. its still under on site warrenty

Answer:T400 hinge replacement -warranty

( I too thought i may one day need to consider replacing the hinges for my T500 - they re not as they used to ) Hinges are not covered by warranty as a rule - However i can recall a few exceptions mentioned here...if you make a little search on ebay you can find a new pair for about 15$ then you can either put them yourself or persuade the service there do it at no charge...

I am currently out of warranty, and want to know the cheapest way to get my x61t fixed. Based on the pictures given on LCD service parts for the x61t, it seems that  #8, #5, or a combination of the two is broken or no longer attached to each other. From what I can see, the plastic under #7 seems to have completely ripped in such a way that the LCD screen is incapable of staying upright on its own. I looked through "Find a Service Provider" and don't know if the places listed do "out of warranty" repairs, and they mostly seem to be geared towards companies. If I cannot get this fixed for under a couple hundred, I'm probably going to end up buying a netbook.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:x61t broken hinge & out of warranty

deadlysyphen, It may be worth a bit of calling around to check labor rates, and depending on your skill level it might be worth a bit of careful disassembly to see what has actually failed in the system. You can check prices on our parts at 800-388-7080 to get a sense of how much just the parts would be.   If you decide to go the netbook route, I'll bet there are a number of folks on this forum that might be interested in buying your system. In any event, I'm sorry to hear about your trouble.  I use an X60t tablet and have for several years and really enjoy it. Best regards, Mark

My laptop hinge just broke, and i am past the warranty. Is there anything that can be done about it since its a factory defect? Or at the very least can i send it in and pay for it to be repaired? If so, how much would that cost? I just recently got my new desktop, but i wanted to keep the laptop for other things.

Hi,

Just wanted to determine my risk....  So I bought a Y40-80 laptop for my wife a little less than a year ago, and just from normal opening and closing, the left hinge has failed and eventually cause the cover to separate from the lcd.  I'm holding it in place using a big metal clip at the moment.

As far as I am concerned, this was the result of a manufacturing defect; I have owned many laptops over the years and have never had a hinge failure like this, let alone have it happen in less than a year.  It was not dropped, or abused in any way.  Looking on line I see a lot of complaints about this, e.g., on Y50 but not my specific model.

Anyway, when I chatted online with Lenovo support, after I sent them a picture, the guy warned me that it may not be covered under warranty since it is "physical damage"; I never knew that this sort of cop out language existed with respect to warranties on computers.  Accidental damage I agree, but this is clearly a defect in the product.

They sent me a box to mail it to the depot, and I just wanted to find out what would happen if they refused to fix it under warranty.  There is no way I am paying to fix this problem, but I'm concerned that they will hold my machine hostage if we reach an impasse.

Will Lenovo demand money from me to send the machine back?  If so, any idea what it will be?  I'm just trying to determine how much risk I'm willling to t... Read more

Answer:Y40-80 - Warranty repair for broken hinge

A little cart before horse here?  I think you're working yourself up about this when it probably isn't necessary.   They have to cover their asses and from a pic there's probably no way to tell if you sat on the thing when it was open.  If it's a design flaw (and I'm pretty positive it is), the tech will know it and your laptop will either be repaired or replaced.  I have many issues with Lenovo quality, but for a large corporation, their support has been alright.   Stop thinking about the laptop and it'll be back before you know it, keep obsessing on it like a pot of water that won't boil and it will feel like forever.  Good luck!

Yoga laptops tend to use tiny 2mm case screws and they often fall out. The screws in the rear secure the hinge and once that becomes loose the case will eventually break. Others may be interested in a permanent fix because it's mechanically impossible for these screws to stay in place: they are obviously underdimensioned both in diameter and in length. After I had my broken case replaced by Lenovo, at my own expense, the screw in the left corner soon worked itself out again. Here's how I fixed it, drilling all the way through the existing hole, not pretty, but it has worked well over several months and it saves from regularly having the case break. (It's $280 each time. Lenovo has officialy never seen the problem, at least in my correspondance with them. It is a customer abuse issue.) The materials for the fix run to about 25 cents: a #6 screw and a nut. I had to file away at the lid to make room for the nut. Also, the screw needs to be cut and filed. The screw cannot be completely countersunk. Extra protection is necessary at the underside of the case. Bolting the bottom case sandwich this way holds the hinge in place.
