Returning my Thinkpad E520, serious screen problems

Question: Returning my Thinkpad E520, serious screen problems

After using my Lenovo Thinkpad E520 laptop for three, four months, I encountered serious screen problems, not caused by my own use. I protect my laptop, with a special Caselogic Laptopbag + a laptop sleeve + a screen protector from crumpler. I think something is wrong with the building quality of mine laptop because I see a serious scratch and strange spots on my screen. Enclosed photo's give more details: The shop where i've bought this laptop send me trough to Lenovo Service. I had really no clue where to find a email-adress so I post it here. Further information: Simultaneously with the purshase of the laptop I've bought a warranty-upgrade: 'LENOVO Warranty 2 year On-site Repair (78Y9363)'. The photo's can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?xuy5e1ojv4osp4x Further help is urgently needed. I am convinced these spots and scratches on the screen aren't normal at all. EDIT: Laptop: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520 NZ33MMH EDIT2: I'm from the Netherlands, maybe that's necessary to know. Preferred Solution: Returning my Thinkpad E520, serious screen problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Returning my Thinkpad E520, serious screen problems

Hi Helder,

Your photo link took me to a flash-infested site that tried to open a pop-up and offered to let me download a zip file. That's not going to happen...

It's too bad the retailer didn't take care of you. Try calling your local Lenovo support number. I think this is it:

Hey there guys, I've been having a stack load of trouble with this laptop. I loved it when it was working but the last few months have been incredibly frustrating. It started with the yellow DC in plug slowly breaking, it then wouldn't accept the charger and I couldn't use the laptop. I was busy at the time so sent it away to be repaired, the repair company called me and asked if I also wanted the screen replaced. I was pretty shocked as it was fine before I sent it and I packaged it really really well. I contacted the courier company and they said they'd need to inspect it to see if I can make a claim or not, so I paid the $50 "inspection fee" from the repair company and it was then picked up. I got a call a few days later saying the courier company wouldn't accept fault as they think it was already broken. Which is complete BS. I KNOW it wasn't broken. So they send it back to me. I now am $50 + postage down and have a laptop which needs even more repairs. Fast forward to this week, I end up purchasing a new DC in card and putting that in myself. Put it all back together and everything looks good. Plug in the charger, push power, everything is going good. I can hear the fans spin up, the hard drive spins up, I'm feeling pretty excited (screen is still broken, I wanted to see if it powered up fine before spending money on replacing that). There is nothing at all showing up on the screen, not even back light. I think it may just be the screen so plug in the HDMI... Read more

Hi I have a brand new E520 and I love it. But there's a quite annoying problem with the screen: it tends to change brightness (it gets brighter or darker in 3 or 4 steps). Could anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

My E520, which I bought about 2 weeks ago, also has a problem nearly like you. When screen returns after turning off for energy saver, its contrast becomes extremely high. I have to wait for a few minutes for it to turn back to normal. Besides, one more symptom is that if I use the buttons for decrease brightness, the lowest level is 2, not 1. I found that it's the Thinkpad Video Features ( Intel Hurom River GT1/GT2) for Windows 7 64 bit. I restored my laptop to before the time I install it, and everything's ok. By the way, it seems that Lenovo usually has problems about driver, isn't it?

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

I had the same problem with my E420s. For me it was resolved by updating to the newest graphics driver. Do you have the version with the 6630M? If yes, follow the explanations in post #42 here: http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2057776037?page=3

I have replaced the screen on a Thinkpad Edge E520 but the new screen is very dim. You can see the ThinkPad logo if look closely at screen when boot up but appears to have no backlight. I had a laptop once that the inverter was faulty and did the same but can't seem to find any reference to one for the E520. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

It seems at the time a couple of weeks ago after Google changed their logo  with the paintbrush, my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 LCD screen started showing some small green lines in the middle upper part of the screen.  They seem to be spreading a little and are now about one half inch by one half inch.   When it boots up and the Microsoft logo comes on and most of the screen is black, I don't see the green lines.  I can see the cursur continually when I move it across the green lines.    Do I need a new screen?   Any other suggestions?   Thank you.

Hi guys. I bought a Thinkpad Edge E520 a while ago. It's a great piece of kit but I feel it's let down by the screen. The viewing angles are very bad as is the contrast. Is it possible to swap out the screen for a more high end one? I don't want to use an external monitor, oh and the screen is matte which is fine...it's just the atrocious viewing angles and sub par contrast.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520 Screen Viewing Angle

You may or may not be able to shim in the 15.6" 1920x1080 panel from the T520/W520.Of course, it'd void your warranty. There are some color calibration tricks you can use so they'll appear to shift less as the viewer moves off angle. (Crushing the lighter colors may work, at a loss of contrast.)

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing £25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 i5 Laptops with Windows 7 - Dead Laptop with Battery Problems

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

Hi all,  I would like to know if anyone have similar problems as I do. I have submited a request and they have send a box for me shipping for repair. However, I would like some advice from you experts' advice before send it for repair as a last resort - as far as I know, there is a high chance they will just send a refurbished one back to me. 1. Once or twice a week, the screen will blackout in windows login page and the only way to fix it, is to reboot. The Laptop is operating normally I can shut down, I can hear the sounds, I can log in(by memorizing the key sequences). 2. Once in every two to three weeks, the keyboard will die. I would be in the middle inside windows, sometimes during log in and the keyboard will die -- totally no response from typing and same here, the only way to fix is to reboot. 3. I have setup Fn + F4 to hibernate, however it's like Fn F4, and F4 are working however, Fn + F4 is not working. It does nothing and won't hibernate.  So I would very much like your advice and if anyone have similar issues can share or even solutions here.  Thank you very much and have a great day folks.

Answer:E520 Problems: Screen blackout, Keyboard dies, Fn + F4 not working!

hey Fredc, try resitting the RAM of your unit and judging from your description, your unit can load into windows correctly.curious to know, was any new software installed before this occurred ?

Hi,

Recently my PC, a Dell Dimension E520, started having graphical problems. The problem started when I had left my PC to make a drink, when I returned to the PC the screen was in Powersave mode, but when I moved the mouse and used the Keyboard it did not return to the Normal mode, it stayed in Powersave and the PC sounded like it was still running at full speed. The PC power button was non-responsive so I had to turn the PC off at the plug.

After booting up I noticed the screen was corrupt, with lots of distorted multi coloured lines or blocks, and random rows of symbols (anyone of £, $, or a symbol I do not know how to type). It would be like this all through boot, and even in Safemode.

However, when I get to Login the random symbols disappear but the lines remain making it almost impossible to use. Once or twice at login the computer screen went back and locked in to Powersave.

Once at boot it came up with an error with a message stating a certain function was repeating itself so was closed but I cannot remeber the function and this has happened once out of 20 odd boots.

I have tried searching for this problem online but I cannot seem to find an answer.

I have attached a picture of the problem at Boot

PROBLEMS: Streaky distorted multi-coloured lines at Boot and in Safemode
Random lines of symbols (£,$ and other unknown symbol) at boot and safemode

Question: Thinkpad - e520

I got my first ThinkPad e520 last week. I didn't want to rush to share my experience so took a week's usage to share my experience.e520 - i5 -6GB - 500 GB - Windows 7 HomeStarting with positive feedback:- Matt finish of the laptop feels really good and doesn't feel cheap for this price- Chiclet keypad is also great to type- Performance is good overall for personal use- like usual ThinkPad - finger scan, touch pad is very good- 720p webcam is also very good- Lot of shortcut keys near num-pad like calc, lock, search and my computer are really useful- Fast windows bootup Now few points to raise your eyebrows,- First thing I noticed was a stuck pixel about an inch lower left corner from center of the screen. I was advised no replacement will be done for 1 stuck pixel and only option was to return this laptop by warranty team. I loved this laptop so much that I thought I will live with stuck pixel but after using it for a week I felt it was very annoying so will call service department tomorrow and ask them once again if they can do anything about this stuck pixel, else I am gonna return it and get a new one. Also I tried all the options which are floating in the internet to fix stuck pixel but nothing solved my problem. If the stuck pixel was at the corners you can try to ignore it but since it is right at the center of the screen you got to see it to know how annoying it would be - Lot of flux in 'F' and 'J' keys and another small issue but annoying once you starting typing... Hello! Its my first laptop with my money and i bought thinkpad Edge E520. I just bought it two weeks back . At first the system never boots, its goes to the lenovo thinkpad flash page and stays there, if you wait till it responds, it automatically moves to this ATAPI menu!  I spoke to lenovo and they said its a hard disk problem.  I went to warranty service, he ran the lenovo recovery disk and the system started to work. I used it for a while and i installed nothing new in that laptop and sudenly a couple of days back the system got stuck when i am browsing internet, it said  " WHOA! google chrome ahs crashed" and the screen goes to blue screen of death. Again when i reboot it, the same first which i faced at first < going to the ATAPI menu> occurs..any help would be good. If not i am thinking of exchanging the laptop! its sad that this is happening from the first thing i bought with my salary.

I recently purchased through Lenovo the ThinkPad Edge E520. It arrived in the mail a couple days ago. Within the first 3 seconds of pressing the power button, I recieved the dreaded "Fan Error" message posted on the upper left of the screen then shut itself off. Suffice to say, I was disappointed. First ThinkPad I've ever bought, and it comes with what looks like a faulty fan assembly. I've contacted the Warranty department, and aparently the warranty upgrade I purchased is not on file, and I have to wait until the Warranty Entitlement department does the paperwork to straighten it out. I will not hear back from them until Monday or later since it takes roughly 2 business days for Entitlement to process the request, which is another disappointment. Once that's handled, *then* I can make a on-site service request, as my warranty upgrade entitles me to do. Considering the time sensitive nature of my work, I need a functioning laptop: now. So, to get to the point, while they try to figure that out, is there anything I can do on my end? It has been beyond frustrating to twiddle my thumbs as now I have no functioning machine with which to do my work.

Answer:ThinkPad E520 - "Fan Error."

Try giving it a gentle but hard bump on the back of the laptop under the ESC key with your hand. This sometimes dislodges a stuck fan on my T400 (sometimes it gets a Fan Error after a long car trip in the trunk).

We're looking for car/travel AC adapters (that plug into a cigarette lighter) for Thinkpad E520's. I was able to find travel adapters with the "slim" connector type (looks like a rectangular USB plug), but the E520's have round connectors. The slim type travel adapters can be seen here: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... I called lenovo and asked if they make travel adapters for the circular, 90w adapters, but she just told me to check best buy lol.... Thanks in advance

Hi, Rachelle

Is the drive being displayed under Computer and/or Device Manager? You could also try updating any drivers and BIOS that may be out of date. All drivers for your system can be found here.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes,

I bought 2 of these in oct 2011 for my twins going to college. My daughters has had no problems.the other one died in may 2012 and was repaired under warranty. It died again in November 2012. I was able to get it running by removing the battery and disconnecting the cmos battery and letting it sit for a while. It happened again, and this time I can't revive it. I want to add that I think there was something wrong when we got it back from repair. The battery icon for the Lenovo power management did not work, but the windows one did. In hindsight I think this had something to do with nvram problem I have since heard so much about.   I just got off the phone with technical support and I was told I there is nothing they can do for me, other than fix it for 550 bucks.I am so mad I am still shaking.   -Scott

I have just completed a complete erase and re-intall of Windows 7 64 on a Thinkpad Edge E520. I have updated all of the drivers to the latest version offered on the lenovo site. However, when I go through the normal shutdown procedure the laptop shuts down and then comes right back on. This is not the only E520 that I am having this issue with and this is the reason for the complete re-install of the OS. From what I have seen through some quick research this seems to be a pretty common issue with Thinkpads so I hope there is an easy fix for it. I should aslo add that I have it set to shutdown when I close the lid but it will shutdown and start back up even when I do that. The only I have been able to get to shutdown and stay that way is to hold in the power button and force it to shutdown.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

My recently purchased E520 plays sound very softly through speakers and through stereo systems. I have Ipods and basic MP3 players that play a lot louder. I've checked all of the settings through Windows 7 and there doesn't seem to be any problems. Is there a way that I can boost the sound because this is really dissapointing, i'm extremely happy with my Thinkpad apart from this one issue. Is it possible that there are sound restricitions on laptops purchased in New Zealand?

I am seeing other posts here, and elsewhere on the Internet, with the same problem.  My hardly used (maybe ten times), out of warranty (by maybe six months) ThinkPad E520 is simply dead.  No power getting to the laptop from either the battery or the AC adaptor.  I have tried, unsuccessfully, to get help from Lenovo over the phone with this issue, but the low level support personnel refuse to connect me to a manager or supervisor so that I could try to possibly get help with this known issue.  I spent almost $900 on this laptop.  Honestly, in my 46 years on this planet, I have never, ever spent money to repair an out of warranty piece of electronics.  EVER. Can anyone help me?

I left my E520 with the LCD display closed and a cell phone plugged into the USB, and a video display plugged into the HDMI, overnight.  When I got up I could hear the fan constantly running, cool air coming from it. I open the LCD display and logged into it and all was well but the fan continued to constantly run.  I rebooted the laptop and now I get "FAN ERROR" with 2 beeps and it shuts down. I have unplugged it and removed and reinstalled the battery, but get the same error. Did it overheat and fry something in the thermal sensor overnight? The fan obviously is working.

Bright white on half and crazy stuff on the other.Ordered replacement LCD LP156WH4 (TL) (B1) and put it in.Now there is no back light. Everything looks good if i boot it up and hold a bright light to it.My question is is there anything a novice can check or replace that might be the problem, or do i need to send it in?When i plug in the old LCD it is dark now too.Lenovo wants minimum $179-570 to fix it. Thanks for any insight.Jeff

a friend gave me a thinkpad e520 (intel i3 chip) to check out . it's completely dead . no power light . no bios error beeps . nothing .what could it be ? the battery is charged . i had it plugged in . no signs of life at all . she said someone told her it's the motherboard but i think it the power board . how can i find out ? helppppp . lol .

Answer:lenovo thinkpad e520 dead ?

It very likely may be the motherboard.Do you know any other history behind the failure as to when the last time it ran correctly and then what happened between then and the time that it died?( such as .... drink spilled in laptop, it took a dive down a flight of stairs, it was left turned on and put into a backpack or computer bag and overheated to death in the confined space, bad storm came thru and ever since it wont boot, child ran thru room and clotheslined the power cable to laptop and laptop dropped off coffee table to hardwood floor ..... ect ) * All these of which I have seen kill laptops.Information as to how it may have died can point us in a direction...

Really need help with my brand new E520 screen display setting. Many thanks. Just got this online ordered laptop yesterday. Type 1143CTOAfter first start, 15.6' wide screen couldn't display the whole desktop.Check 'display', only one option 'digital flat panel 1024x768'. hrrrr...a 1024x768 display on a wide screen monitor.Guess all the same type of E520, shouldn't it '1366x768' for a display? Have to make a resolution '800x600' to get whole desktop with taskbar, then there is another problem showed up, the desktop is not in central either, more close to botton right.

Answer:ThinkPad E520 Display issue

install lenovo vantage tool and let it download all drivers. Then you can set res to 1366x768 as well as use fingerprint, camera, bluetooth, hdd protection,, wifi  and the AMD graphics.

Hi there! I, and many other e520 users too, have a problem with a pulsing fan, meaning that every 45 seconds or so the fan spins up for a second. As far as I know, it has something to do with the firmware of the Embedded Controller. I read that other thinkpad generations had this problem too and  it was fixed by a bios update (updated firmware of the EC). Any chance to receive a bios update solving this problem in the near future? The spinning up is very annoying. Thank you in advance. Tom This is what I am talking about:Acceleration (pulsing) problem:The pulsing is triggered by the embedded controller when it monitors the fan speed and adjusts the fan control accordingly every few seconds. For some models, IBM released an update to the embedded controller program that seems to at least partially solve this problem.

Answer:Thinkpad E520 - Pulsing fan problem

hey tomseventhree, welcome to the forums.is your bios at version 1.22/1.09/1.01 ? if it isn't.. head over to http://support.lenovo.com and update it.

Hi, looking for some help here.So my computer was running slow, and for various reasons I decided I needed to wipe it clean. I've gone through the system restore procedure but now I've turned it on and I have BASIC functionality, I can't get anywhere past that. It says in the system properties that Windows IS installed though. I tried to install Intel's wireless driver (Windows told me no network adapter could be found) yet the installation cannot be completed because apparently I already have the old Intel driver installed. When trying to delete the old programme I get a message saying that this cannot be completed.  Unfortunately I do not possess the original disc which came with the laptop. Do I need to buy a new Windows 7 disc and install from there? Or do I need to download drivers etc. online and install via a usb stick? And if so which? Please help Thanks to anyone with any useful advice in advance

Hey Guys! I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520. Im quite sure it supports Ultrabay, because I can remove one screw and pull out the DVD-drive while system is running without any problems  My question is: There are 2 different hard drive adapters available (at least here in germany), which one is the right for my model? There is one saying "the newer one" with 12.7mm and a special thing for holding the harddrive save in place:click here And the other one, named with "for older models" with 9.5mm and not this special holding-stuffclick here I don't know which one is right, but from measuring the dimensions of my DVD-Drive, I guess I need the bigger one (which would be the first)Any help? thanks

Answer:Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

The PSREF says that the DVD drive is not removeable:

"DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable, tray-in
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,
removable, upgradable"

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Edge e520 laptop that I purchased les then 3 months ago, and this morning when I woke up it will not start upa anymore What it does is I push the button, the light comes on, you can hear the fan starting, it boots the DVD-ROM and then the HDD and then it powers off. THen it starts automatically again and so on. I have not done ANYTHING to the laptop to cause this, it just happened out of the blue. And it doesn't matter if I try to start it on battery, AC adapter or both. Can anyone help?

Answer:ThinkPad e520 no longer booting..

1/ Download an Ubuntu-iso: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download2/ Burn it onto a cd. Make sure you burn it as an image, not as data! You can use ImgBurn to burn images.3/ Make sure your optical drive is set as primary boot device in bios.4/ Try booting with the Ubuntu-cd. If that works, then the problem probably lies with your hard drive.

I have a ThinkPad E520 that will sleep/shut off/ screen blinking constanly. Even in the BIOS. I've replaced the motherboard and that fixed it for a time but the problem came back. After that I replaced the CPU and the problem went away for a day or two then came back again. I've tried different RAM and CMOS battery. I'm completely out of ideas. Has anyone else run into this before?

Hi, I just orders a Micron RealSSD C400 SSD 128GB for my E520.I was starting to think how to move my Windows 7 64 OS and data from the current C drive on the hard-disk to the new SSD drive. At first I thought just to use a copy C partition (using Easeus Partition Maste) to the SSD and than change drive letters, but then, I rememberd that Lenovo installs a SYSTEM_DRV partition  size ~1GB with drive letter * that can't be copied. Will it be a problem the leave the current *YSTEM_DRV on the hard disk and just copy C: drive to the SSD ? or should the SYSTEM_DRV partition reside on the same drive a C: partition. Will it slow down startup process ?

It doesn't even show the light when I plug in the power cord, and the cord works fine on another thinkpad. I've tried taking out the battery and alterating holding down the power button for a second 10 times then holding it down for thirty seconds and starting it up with and without the battery, plugged in and not. This is the second time this has happened to me with . The first time they replaced the motherboard and palm rest. I thought it was an isolated thing and the service was great when it was under waranty so I continued to recomend thinkpad computers.  My previous thinkpad is still working 8 years after I bought it. Now my warranty has expired, the exact same problem has struck again, and I'm reading all over that I'm basically SOL.  I've barely owned this computer for 1 year.  If this means the computer is shot, it works out to me having paid 43 bucks a month for it. Is there anyone I can try to contact at lenovo or should I just move onto a new brand and start warning others of thinkpad's sharp decline in reliability?

Hi,
I would like to buy my son some ram for christmas.  He is limping along on 4gb with i5 2540 running 64bit windows 7.  I had initially planned to buy an extra 4 gb to match what was in the machine.  I am now thinking that it might be better to replace the 1x 4gb and go to 2 x 8gb.  I have read that some people have gone to this set up.  However, I thought that the upgrade level was only 2 x 4gb.  Can anyone help me and give me some advice on what ram to buy and any successful upgrades that you have done to this unit.
With Thanks,

You can use up to 2x8GB DDR3 204-pin SODIMM. You can get 1066 or 1333MHz speeds. 1600MHz and higher chips may or may not run at full speed (they should still work though).

Just got a new Edge E520 NZ33MUK , specs here: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_ThinkPad_Edge_E520_1076383.html Having an AMD 6630, one of the first things I wanted to do was try out the gaming ability, so with the system pretty much factory fresh I installed Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Basically Oblivion hangs during loading for me. Specifically It hangs immediately before the tan menu screen appears. It doesn't say that it's jammed up, and if I ctr-alt-del to task manager it says 'running' i.e. fine, but the screen is just black nothing happening. So far I have tried:Checking all graphics/ audio driversAll different compatibility modesAll different graphics settingSet oblivion.exe to high performance (discreet) graphics Disabled User account controlSwitching graphics to integrated in BIOSDisabling intel graphics in Device manager Switching to 16bit colourAny ideas / Anyone in a similar situation? Thanks,Dave

I have four Thinkpad Edge E520 laptops that don't indicate power from the powr supply or power on at all. I tried using the battery from a machine that does work and testing the power supplies on other machines that work, but none of the four problem children power up at all. I've removed all of the perihperals but no power or boot up. Also removed the battery with only external power and then tried to boot. Tried only with the battery and no boot. I checked the power supplies with a volt meter and they are a steady 20.33VDC. The charge indicator light on the side near the charging jack does not light up at all. Is it a fault of the charging board or the motherboard? Anyone know of have the same problem that has been fixed? Thanks.

I bought this laptop on Aug 29th (or close to that) and after using it for about 3 weeks there's a problem with the resolution i suppose? It happens randomly but it usually happens when i turn on the computer with the battery in. I made a mistake before by taking the battery out when the computer was asleep, and that's when it started to have this problem. My brother thought that i probably messed up the driver so he reinstalled it. It was fine right after he reinstalled it, but then the problem happened again soon afterwards. I don't know why but the original resolution setting was 1440 x 900 (and it's recommended?) When I changed it to 1366x768, it showed even less of what it's supposed to show. This is a picture of my screen right now. You can see a little of the circle on the top left corner of the screen. It's supposed to be a full circle. You can also see that the recommended resolution is 1440x900.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6057/6261682394_a1e75e8df1_z.jpg This picture is also more obvious that you can't see the "shadow" of the word THINK.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/6261682108_022a201be8_z.jpg

I own a ThinkPad Edge E520 (1143ADU) with a scratched display. I would like to replace it, but am also looking for options. I could order the same part from Lenovo, but I find the screen (15.6", WXGA HD) that came with the computer less than satisfactory at reproducing colours (photo editing). Are there quality third-party options, or can I use a better display from another ThinkPad (I can't find any compatibility info)? I am looking at improving sharpness and colour replication first, and not necessarily at increasing pixel resolution.

About a week and a half ago, my laptop got its first ever virus since owning it for 5 years. So, I wiped it using a handy dandy data destruction software.  Got everything set back up, but now...none of my video editing software will work.  I think its a driver issue - i know i am missing at least a few of them since wiping. But i do not know which ones specifically i am missing.  Is there a way i can pull up a list of all the drivers i currently have, PLUS the ones i still need? Like, my aspect ratio.  Its in proportion, somewhat.  Its just a tad bit...stretched.  I use to know how to fix that, but now, for the life of me, i can not remember how to do it. I know i need a new computer, but i dont have the funds right now to get one.  Plus, this one suits me just fine.

Answer:Missing Drivers for ThinkPad EDGE E520

Hello and welcome,

If you haven't already, install and run ThinkVantage System Update.  It should offer to download and install the drivers appropriate to your machine.

Hallo, I consistently experience random shutdowns with my Thinkpad Edge E520. However, the shutdowns only seem to occur when it is connected to the Lenovo USB 2.0 Port-Replicator with Digital Video through which I link the notebook with a Lenovo monitor and a Lenovo keyboard. So far there have been no shutdowns when the notebook is running on its own without the port-replicator. However, I mostly use the notebook with the port replicator so that this observation may not be representative. Is it possible that using the port-replicator leads to shutdowns? Has anyone any experience with that? A different potential source of the problem may be the RAM: One RAM-card is manufactured by Samsung, the other by Kingston, the latter having been added by the PC vendor. Does Lenovo actually manufacture the RAM-cards it sells in its own shop or is it supplied with RAM-cards from another RAM-card-manufacturer like Samsung and simply labels those with Lenovo stickers so that it doesn't make a difference which one one buys? Could the recovery of the system software help? I don't see how as Windows obviously recognises both RAM-cards and the Lenovo RAM-test confirms them as fully operable. Thanks. Kind regards, Simon

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 - random shutdowns.

download Prime95 and run it without the port replicator inserted, see whether it causes any sort of shutdown. What if you link the monitor directly to the laptop HDMI or VGA?

I have a lenovo thinkpad e520 with an i3 2310 processor. I want to buy the i7 2720qm and put it in myself but I have noticed that the lenova website only seems to offer an upgrade of their own up to the i7 2620. I am curious as to whether or not this laptop will support the i7 2720 and whether it will be able to withstand the heat produced from it and its power consumption. I know the motherboard is a sandy bridge so it will most likely accept the cpu but what else could go wrong with installing it ( not including damaging during installation). The i7 2720 has a tdp of 45w while the 2620 has a 35w tdp. Is this a problem? Also the i7 2620 and lesser are dual cores while the 2720 is a quad. Will this cause any problems considering the surface area of the heat sink only support dual cores ? Also, will there be any issues with the battery and charger relative to the 2720's power usage as stated before? I called lenova and their tech supports dont seem to have much knowledge on it. I figured the possibility that lenova uses this e series as a less power consuming option so to include the i7 2720 might take awaay from their advertising yet it might still work if done outside of their upgrades.I guess thats about it lol and thanks!  If you also could tell me if the 2820 will work that wil be greatly appreciated as well.

Answer:CPU upgrade for Thinkpad Edge e520 1143

TLDRQuads are using sligthly different socket, max you can fit instead of i3-2310m is i7-2640m (it's new max dual core after sandy bridge refresh, previously it was i7-2620M mentioned by you) Side note: IMHO Ex20 would survive quads with equal or slightly higher TDP easily.

hope  you can help me in fixing my problem. well i was just looking for lenovo thinkpad edge E520 series with windows 7 home premium 64bit. bought this laptop 2months ago. unfortunately due to some virus attack. i have lost all my files and whole operating system. and now i've got a different windows 7 get installed. but, i don't have the supporting drivers of my new thinkpad edge. that's not even connecting to the internet.could you tell me from where can i download these drivers so that i can use my thinkpad as usual. i am unable to get these supporting/compatible drivers online or from the lenovo websitehope you will definitely help me in this regard.regardsvenkat

Answer:thinkpad edge E520 drivers download

Hello and welcome,

I'm pretty sure those drivers are available on the Lenovo site.  The usual recommendation is to download and install the wired network driver first (using whatever machine is on the network and copying over via flash drive or CD or whatever) then directly download ThinVantage System Update, and let it pull down all the other drivers and apps.

(I'm on the US site - yours may be different) Click on the "Support" link above, then "Download Drivers and Software" then select your machine ("Quick Path" is easiest) then "Refine". That should bring up a full menu of drivers and software.  Expand "Networking" and download and install the Realtek Giga LAN driver.  You could also go directly to a wifi driver if you know what your internal wifi card is.

Once you have the network, come back to that page with your E520, expand "ThinkVantage Technology" and install System Update.  Run that and let it pull down the rest.

My wife's Edge E520 has the "won't turn on problem". Before I return it to the service centre I would like to back-up the hard disk. What is the best way. I have an Edge 15.Can I just move the Hard Drive across to the 15 and run back-up? Or would I be better to get an external disk case for a 2.5 SATA drive and put the disk in that and back it up from there. Any advice would be appreciated. I am always wary after one service centre wiped my daughters disk for a keyboard change!

Answer:Back-up Thinkpad Edge E520 which will not turn on.

Either way will be okay. But using the external drive option will be the preferred option, as you wont have the driver reinstallation problem.

Hello - laptop is 6 months old and has already been fixed once after the common "totally dead laptop" issue. The last 2 weeks it has noticably slowed right down. The tools thingy says "Hard Drive failure... replace" but it was still working most of the time just slower. I've run Chkdsk a few times before startup. Today I restarted it with Chkdsk selected. It's been on now for 2 hours and is at 7% - the screen shows "file record segment ..........  is unreadable" . Has it now died?

Answer:Thinkpad E520 Hard Disk failure?

The tools are likely reporting based on "SMART" errors (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology), which means that it is basicly reporting issues detected via the internal diagnostics of the hard drive itself..   Before running this drive through more tests, make sure you have backed up your data first.   It may still kind of work now, but you will probably see a failure shortly and should contact Lenovo if you are still under warranty.    I would suspect that a hard drive should be a customer replacable item, so hopefully they should not require you to send the machine back to them.     Keep in mind that unless you image your machine prior to the swap / failure, you will be starting with a new OS load.

I just want to reset my laptop back to it's factory settings how can I do that, I don't have any disks!

Answer:Factory Default Reset? (e520 thinkpad)

What operating system are you using? Windows 7? If you wipe the hard drive you will lose your Recovery Partition so I would avoid doing this unless you have a Recovery or Windows 7 Installation DVD and a KEY.

If you want to start over and you want do a fresh install with Windows 7 these links should be helpful for you:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/upgrading-to-windows-7-faq
and
http://techfleece.com/2011/05/26/how-to-do-a-clean-install-of-windows-7-tutorial/

You may also want to download all of your important drivers to a USB for easier installation after the clean install.
Open your device Manager and compare the drivers you have now, you can download your Lenovo Drivers here.

Also with internet access after the Clean Install you can download th System Update 5.01 . System Update downloads data updates for software, drivers, and BIOS from a Lenovo server directly over the Internet without requiring specific user knowledge of where the package is located or if it is needed by the target system.

My e520 laptop recently began freezing on me on startup. I noticed the other night when I turn on my laptop, all is fine and I wait for it to boot up..Then when I go to click on anything (folder/browser icon, etc) on the desktop, the screen and keyboard just completely freezes and I am unable to press anything or click out. This has been happening with increased regularity and the only option I have is to manually hold down on the power button and see if the next boot up will present me with the same issue. I am finding that I have to manually reboot 6, 7, 8, 9 times for this freezing issues to go away. I have scanned the laptop for any viruses, etc. and all seems fine. What can be the issue here? Any council or expertise on this subject will be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 freezing issues

Hi, shyguy

I would recommend doing a hardware scan on your disk drive and your RAM to see if either of them are experiencing hardware faults. This can be done using the BIOS hardware scans. To access these tests, turn on the computer and tap Enter a few times to interrupt normal startup. When the menu appears, press F10 to diagnose hardware. This should open up another program. I would run the Quick Memory Test and the Quick Storage Device Test with all options selected. After running these, please post your results and we can can go from there.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I signed up for the reason being that I've been having some heat/cooling issues on my Lenovo Thinkpad E520. I don't know why this is happening, as I bought the device a few months back. It's still under standard warranty. Here are some screenshots of the computer running Prime95, then the computer running nothing (Idle). The heat issues affect the performance of the graphics card. This get very annoying, when I'm playing Battlefield 3 it runs at a smooth FPS for 5 minutes then drops the FPS down to about 1/3 for about 10-20 seconds. I know the laptops aren't meant for gaming but this wasn't a problem when I bought the laptop. But, now I had enough, I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Thats it running prime 95. You can see the temperature varies from 90-99 degrees.

Thats the computer running nothing but Windows, Speccy and CPU-Z. The temperature varies between 60-65. At idle it's ok but it still shouldn't run like this.

There is no display at all. I updated the BIOS and it failed the previous night. This laptop has no warranty and need some help.Is there any way that I can manually re-write the BIOS to the chip via EEPROM writer? ( assuming the issue is with the BIOS)Any other rules of thumb that might work on this other than replacing the motherboard? Or is the motherboard repairable?CheersMJ.

So I got my new laptop and for some reason the graphics card doesnt work correctly. Whenever I try to play starcraft2 on medium (which even the intel chp is capable of doing) it looks like this when using the radeon: http://img217.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2011050510363.jpg/I emailed AMD about this and they told me its probably a drivers issue but their CCC doesnt support the switchable graphics notebooks and I should ask lenovo for drivers. But I cant find anything but drivers for the intel chip. I also dont have a phone available right now and I cant seem to find a support email adress and this is getting pretty frustrating and makes me wonder why they use this switchable graphics thing if they cant even make it work   I tried turning the intel chip off but CCC wont recognize the radeon even when I do this, also for some reason deactivating one of the graphics cards seems to make the other one not working properly anymore either :/ I found this on the starcraft board where a guy uses the same graphics card / intel / driver and has the same issue:http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2057776037Im a bit underwelmed by the lack of email support, hopefully someone can help me out hereThanks alotDavid

Apologies if this has been asked before. I want to upragrade my E520 hard drive from its current 250GB to 1TB.Can anyone recommend a good option for the Thinkpad E520. Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad E520 Hard drive upgrade

first thought is: a) must be 7200 rpm - because it's fast, and vibration is less, b) must be sata of course and sized 2,5 inch, and in polish distribution are: - Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB (7200, 16MB, Serial ATA/300)- Seagate Momentus 7200.4 500 GB (7200, 16MB, Serial ATA/300)- Seagate Momentus 500 GB (7200, 16MB, Serial ATA/300)- Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB (7200, 32MB/4GB SSD, Serial ATA/300)- Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB (7200, 32MB/8GB SSD, Serial ATA/600)conclusions:- at the moment there's no more space than 750GB in logical price for use,- maybe ssd drives will be soon available, but those drive are very affective, and they are so much often send to  service than typical drives;- those last two are equipped with ssd memory, which makes REAL big write/read buffer as well as makes your hard drive real faster and most safest - the sooner data will be written or read, sooner all operation will be finished without data loose. Cheers!

Answer:Thinkpad E520, looking for new internal Hard disk

Hey there omcinside,

The E520 was shipped with the HM65 Mobile Express Chipset, and with at SATA II Drive. We know off the bat that the system will support SATA II for you no problem. Looking over the specs for HM65 Chipset, it states: "High-speed storage interface supporting up to 6 Gb/s transfer rate for improved data access. Provides up to 6 SATA ports at 3 Gb/s with up to 2 ports supporting 6 Gb/s transfer rates." So it should support SATA 3 as well.

I hope this helps.

It depends on how close you are to the router and how strong the connection is. If you're far away or there's a lot of interference, the connection speed will automatically drop to ensure data integrity. You may want to see if your access point is operating in 802.11g mode.

I am having a nightmare trying to get my laptop going again after a hdd failure.Fortunately I managed to burn the necessary disks from the recovery partition before the hard drive gave up.However with a new hdd installed and upWindows 7 back on via the recovery disks I have got a limp and useless machine. It appears that the recovery disk doesn't include all the original drivers as the display is using a bog-standard generic driver and some unknown devices show in device manager. My main issue though is Windows Update since reinstall is disabled and I have tried allsorts to get it up and running with no success. I've also tried to update the lenovo toolkit to automatically update the drivers and that will not update either - claiming it needs .Net 4 and .Net 4.5 running to do so. I have tried to install via Microsoft website but .net 4 fails during install and 4.5 wont install without 4. So I cannot update Windows 7 nor the installed Lenovo software. I have tried to manually download drivers from the lenovo site but my Internet is so slow and some of the drivers are so large (200mb+) that most downloads are stalling or timing out before they complete. Any help or ideas please - otherwise its a new laptop purchase for me and it won't be a Lenovo.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 Recovery Nightmare

Hi,

I"m surprised that your recovery media didn't install all the original drivers.  It should have AFAIK.

If your recovery media is old enough to pre-date SP1 _and_ youve installed an advanced format drive (most HDDs are these days) that could explain the windows update problem.

In that case, this KB should help: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Windows-Update-Fails-After-Installing-New-Hard-...

Once you get win update running try again to get ThinkVantage System Update installed.  That should get your drivers updated.
