Thinkpad Edge 13 won't boot and keyboard failing. Motherboard?

Question: Thinkpad Edge 13 won't boot and keyboard failing. Motherboard?

I have a Thinkpad Edge 13" (AMD Athlon Neo X2) and have encountered a number of problems that have come up over the last couple of weeks. I've had the Edge for a year and half and it is no longer under warranty. Product Number: 01972AU #1 - Edge will not boot. I hit the power button and I hear the hardrive start spinning but nothing shows up on the screen. No Bios, No windows, nothing. I have hooked up an external monitor with no luck. The only way I have been able to get around this issue is to continually try to boot the machine (sometimes without the battery, with battery unplugged, etc.). However, it appears that once the laptop is "warmed up" it boots. It will then restart and shutdown and boot up without issue until I shut it down overnight. This issue appears to have come out of nowhere. I've run and passed every hardware diagnostic test out there and nothing comes up. But as soon as I leave the machine shut down for a while I have to go through the whole process again. I've tried removing the RAM, unplugging the WAN, etc. I'm afraid it may be a motherboard problem... #2 - Bottom of keyboard not working. This one caused me a considerable headache since I believed that I had locked myself out of windows somehow since I didn't realize that I was typing in my password incorrectly. Once I got back from the store with a cheap USB keyboard I could get back in. I noted that the letter 'B' and the arrow keys were not working. This then appears to have spread now across the bottom keys. What is the best way to clean the keyboard (I've removed it and tried blasting it with air but it hasn't gotten me anywhere. I've unplugged an re-plugged in the keyboard with no results. I haven't been able to find anything in the support forums to help me out with this so any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad Edge 13 won't boot and keyboard failing. Motherboard?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Edge 13 won't boot and keyboard failing. Motherboard?

So I've been able to open up a case with my credit card company (thankfully they double the warranty period on purchases). Now I need to get an estimate for repairs. Where should I take it? Any ideas on how much I can expect to spend for a new motherboard and keyboard replacement? Thanks again!

Good afternoon,

I would like to write a complaint, regarding my Lenovo laptop, which I have purchased approximately 1 year ago. I have chosen Lenovo as reliable computer company, but I was disappointed, as first taint occurred in one and a half month after purchase. Second was in the middle of the year, and third one was about 2-3 weeks ago. I used to buy another computer suddenly, as my job performance seriously depends on my computer. I am working in airlines as head of flight support division/first officer, so you can imagine how strong strike to me it was. Unfortunately, only 1 year warranty was on my Lenovo laptop(which was expired approx 1 month before it's last taint). Besides 2 first taints, third one was absolutely last, as motherboard has completely failed. I was advised by computer repair technician, that in order to fix my computer, I need to buy a new motherboard, which price is 1400LT (approximately 400EUR), when the price of my computer was approx 2300LT (year ago), now it's price much lower. It was more beneficial to buy a new computer, than to fix computer which age is 1 year and which had fails 3 times. I could no realize, what I could expect in month or 2 months after buying new motherboard. I think, that that computer was completely unreliable. Also I  think, maybe it was a defective batch of mine model? Maybe you have attained more complaints regarding that model and batch? Trusting to your company, it is completely unbelievable, that it ... Read more

In my workplace I have had 3 Edge laptops with faulty motherboards (2 x E520, 1 x Edge 13). The sympton for all was: not powering on. These all have motherboards replaced under warranty. Anyone else experience these problems?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge motherboard failures

Unfortunately, mine is not under warranty, but I fear that I may have the beginning of a motherboard issue.  My laptop won't boot (even though I hear the hard drive start).  It eventually starts once its warmed up a bit.  Once I have the Edge running, it passes all diagnostic tests so I can't really be sure what the issue is.

Hi alaa_pcprof and welcome to the community,

About the only way I can advise to find a board is through an authorized service center.

Use the map.  At the top enter a country  and it will bring up a list of providers with addresses and phone numbers.
There's none in Iraq, there's some in Jordan, some in Lebanon and a lot in Saudi Arabia if you have any contacts there.

It's not going to be cheap.  On Ebay, in the US, a used board costs around 250.00US.

What happened to your board, anyway, that it died?

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

I just bought a thinkpad edge last week, and it's a fantastic piece of machine. The keyboard is by far the best i've ever used on a laptop. Just a small question, it says here on the website that it's a spill resistant keyboard, however when i turned the laptop over, there aren't any drainage holes under it, So, what happens, if i do accidentally spill water on it ? Would the warranty cover the damage caused by it ?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge Keyboard

The video shows the liquid (water?) splashing back out of the keyboard.  I don't have mine yet, so not sure but based on that I'd say Lenovo has designed the keyboard some sort of barrier to resist spills.

Hey guys, Had my Thinkpad Edge E450, for more than a year now. Never really had any problems with the keyboard. However, since yesterday, my keyboard has simply gone crazy on me. Right shift + c no longer registers, even though right shift + any other key still works. c works too along with c+ left shift. w+e keys, when pressed together doesn't register the e although both keys registers fine when pressed individually. Most weird of all is the fact that F4, associated with microphone no longer works either when FN is locked and when it isn't. However, every time I press the G key, the microphone activates/deactivates. I used the lenovo diagnostics tool and the keyboard passed the tests. Tried clean install windows 10 on the whole system and still the same result. Also tried uninstalling all drivers for keyboard in device manager and it still hasn't gotten any better. I didn't do any manual updates or anything that I know of which could affect the keyboard. Please help! Good day and welcome to the community.

Is there a sticker anywhere on the bottom of the machine that shows your machine's type-model number? It would likely be in xxxx-xxx format. If you find anything, post back here, but please don't your serial number.

My wife just received her new Thinkpad Edge (0196-26U 13" display, Intel cpu, matte black). While not as peppy as our souped-up T61 or T400, it's a lot lighter and fits her needs. Most keys on the keyboard feel great but our model appears to have a defect. The upper right corner of the keyboard tray routinely pops out. I can click it back in but there is a noticeable bulge and with any slight flex of the body it pops back out. Also, the right-hand side of the END key is depressed relative to the rest of the keys. I will be contacting Lenovo today to inquire about a replacement part. Anyone else encounter this problem?

Hi, I have ThinkPad Edge 15 0319-3TG that doesn't power up. The lights on it don't turn on at all. Power supply AC adaptor has been tested OK. Pressing and holding power button didn't help. Speaking to hardware support at work, he guessed motherboard could be busted. Looking online, these cost a small fortune! What is the best way troubleshooting this? How can I ensure it is indeed motherboard? I have keen eyes/steady hands, not too much experience with motherboards, so your help will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 15 0319-3TG - No power? Motherboard change needed? Possible?..!

Hi, TonyKay

I looked up the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your machine and found some troubleshooting steps to this issue. Firstly, make sure all connections are good and tight. Secondly, it may be your RAM that needs replacing. Finally, it could be the motherboard. It is unlikely that both RAM sticks would have died at once, so I would guess that it is the motherboard as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi,  I have purchased ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4 from Korea with the following configuration:Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.3GHz (up to 2.9GHz with TurboBoost)8GB DDR3 SDRAM - Originally 4GB (1333MHz)Intel HD Graphics 3000 & ATI Radeon HD6630M (1GB dedicated) Although I am Korean, I don't use much of the Korean input and I also type without looking at the keyboard. Also, the keyboard seems a bit "crammed" with the extra letters stuffed onto the keys.  After some comparison with my local retail shops' (Singapore) ThinkPad Edge, I realized the following differences:Right Alt key is replaced by "?/?" (Korean/English input switch)Right Ctrl key is replaced by "??" (Chinese character input)The keys somehow seem to be shaped differently (could be optical illusion due to extra letters on the keys) Is it possible to fit in the fully English keyboard into my ThinkPad Edge?Even if the keyboard does fit, will the English keyboard work as it should, or like the Korean keyboard (with Alt and Ctrl replaced with other functions)?  Thanks in advance hwso1129

Edit: I didn't realize how wordy this was till after I posted and looked at it! So here's a quick rundown.  Laptop keyboard isn't working properly. USB keyboard worked for a time then stopped working properly as well. Opening the onscreen keyboard restores fuctionality to the USB keyboard and partially to the laptop keyboard. Doing a complete system wipe and restoring to Lenovo settings didn't fix the issue.  This issue has progressed through different symptoms, so I will list them in the order they showed up. The first weird thing that started happening was keys not doing what they were supposed to. For example, when I hit H it would type several characters such as "efl." The E key would sometimes act like a command shortcut. Other keys didn't do anything at all. After this I hooked a USB keyboard to the laptop and at first, that worked fine. However, after the laptop went to sleep once and I woke it back up, the USB keyboard was also acting strangely, in much the same manner as described above. The onboard keyboard was still doing the same thing as well. I then restarted the laptop, and neither keyboard would hardly do anything at all. For some reason the E key on both keyboards would still act like it was hotkeyed to open some things, such as opening the edit function in word or my browser. After this I opened the onscreen keyboard, and it worked properly. For some reason, opening the onscreen keyboard and then closing it causes the ... Read more

I have an E540, and the left side of the keyboard keeps getting loose, as seen here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/16602688/2014-04-07%2003.28.26%201.jpgThe same clips fit snugly on the right side of the keyboard. Is this normal? Should I try removing the keyboard and putting it back? I've found the guide here. This is really annoying, since the keyboard makes a rattling sound if this is not fitted properly, I have to push it back once or twice a day.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E540 keyboard issue

Hi,Had the same problem with a brand new Lenovo Edge E540. About a dozen keys were not fitting properly - with the keyboard looking just like the one on your picture.Overall working with the notebook was not possible because of the loud rattling sound the keys made. Also some keys could not be operated well, due to getting stuck.I'm pretty upset since I had ordered the notebook via express and just had to give it back the same day. Testing another Edge E540 at the store, the keyboard there was not much better.

I just received new ThinkPad Edge E130 (3358-5DG) as my secondary laptop on the side of my trusty W520. When travelling / flying etc W520 is simply just a bit too big, so I wanted to have a smaller unit which I can use in these conditions. I know Edge is not supposed to match the quality of W series, but wanted to give a try for this nice small unit. All is working pretty nicely, but keyboard backlight (illuminated keyboard) doesn't work. When looking at machine specifications it's clearly stated that the unit has keyboard backlight (which is a must for me), but there's also listed fingerprint reader that I know for sure that it doesn't exist on this unit. Also it's visible in pictures clearly that there is no fingerprint reader in any of the E130 units (which I didn't expect and don't need either). Fn + space combination should bring up the lights and it's also printed into the keyboard. Pressing this combination gives me OSD symbol "ThinkLight OFF" (icon with ThinkLight and line drawn on top of it) every time I press it, so I never get "ThinkLight ON" symbol and nothing really happens in the keyboard. I have updated all software etc from Lenovo, so all is running latest version. Situations was the same before and after update. So it seems that either A) My device has malfunctioning keyboard light or B) There is no keyboard light and device specifications are wrong at Lenovo site. I have been trying to find information about this issue from the web and so... Hello copter,

I understand the frustration that comes along with this problem.
Here is a link to your drivers.  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page
Under the Software and Utility tab there is an option for the hotkey integration for Windows 7.  Download and update this driver on your computer.
Another driver that will help is to download your Power Management program and driver from the Power Management tab.
Both are on the Link from above.

On the invoice that came with your computer, is there an included parts section?  Included parts may not be the name of the section.  Please check the invoice and see if there is a think-light or back-lit keyboard listed.

Also,  Which light did you order for your Laptop? The back-lit keyboard, where the light is under the keys, or the Think-light where the light shines from above the screen down onto the screen.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Hi, I purchased a few weeks back my thunkpad edge 15, which arived this week, and on the whole I'm very happy with my purchase, however the one issue that is concerning me at the moment is the keyboard The issue lies with the bottom right hand side of the keyboard effecting mainly the arrow keys, the shift, enter and backspace key at a guess it looks like something like a screw is missing as when you hit any of these keys you can see the movement in the board that the keys sit on, and the board knocks against the surrounding plastic laptop shell It might not sound much of an issue, but its a niggling quality qulity issue and before I contact Lenovo in person I wanted to see if anybody on here had experienced quality issues like mentioned above on their keyboard as I dont really want to send my laptop back Thanks in advance for any repliesAlex

I have a Thinkpad Edge E420 model 1141 CTO - I need to replace the keyboard (spilled coffee and keys are stuck) - since it is out of warranty , I am planning to do it myself - when I looked up for the parts,if I give the model number then the FRU for the keyboard shows up as 04W0764.If I give the serial number also then the FRU will be 04W2631. Which is the right one 04W0764 or 04W2631? Are both models the same? Please advise. Thanks

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E420 Keyboard part number (FRU)

Hi bhaskar39, welcome to the forums,

both are actually correct.  As far as I can tell the 04W2631 is an "older" number which has been replaced by 04W0764. You could also use an 04W0800 which is from a different manufacturer to the other.

Hi guys, I just broke a hinge of my S430's keyboard's key. A "regular" one. Does anybody knows where I can get a replacement? In Argentina?  (is where I'm currently) Or some place it ships to Argentina, Spain, Germany, Canada...? I didn't find any key or key hinge for these new keyboards on ebay. I believe it's the same one as the T430u, right? Thanks!

If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

Hello everyone, I recently spilled a little water on my Thinkpad Edge E525 keyboard. None of the essential parts were harmed, but a few keys don't work. I took the keyboard apart, let it to dry for several days, and sprayed some dry air under the keys, but some of them still don't work. I assume I now have to buy a new keyboard, but the thing is I have a French (AZERTY) keyboard and can't find any website that sells them. Can anyone help ? Many thanks in advance, ElVirolo

Using Windows 10. Certain keys have stopped working. Nothing happens when I press ?/ key, pgDn, left arrow, right arrow, down arrow and 0 on the numeric pad. Everything else works fine. Did not spill anything on the keyword. Just suddenly stopped working. Have tried uninstalling and installing keyboard driver. Checked I had latest driver. Windows 10 fully updated. I opened up the panel and removed the keyboard, unpluged the keyboard cables and plugged in again. Vacumed the  the keys and checked for any dirt under the key. Nothing has worked. Can anyone help? Do I need to buy new keyboard? Many thanks.

E520 isn't Windows 10 compatible and there is no Lenovo support. You should have checked before upgrading.

I can't use my external Lenovo USB keyboard when the portable has just has been powered on. This is required to input a username and password before the windows gui mode loads. The workaround is to open the lid of the portable and use the keyboard to login before it loads the windows OS which is XP SP3.  I have downloaded and installed the latest E130 bios from 2.50 (2012-12-26) to 2.52 (2013-04-18). The USB keyboard may sometimes only be responsive after a cold start but will mostly fail to work. The current workaround is to remove and re-insert the USB keyboard once the portable has been switched on. I have also tried different bios combinations and USB keyboards without success. This is definitely related to the Thinkpad E130 as my external keyboards work on other Thinkpad models. Any ideas/answers welcome?

Hi all, I've read a couple of postings but have not found a solution for my problem regarding an upgraded backlit keyboard for my E531 which shows no backlight. I installed the keyboard an connected the two flat cables to the mainboard. Other notebook seems to use additional cables for backlighting, but this one seems not to. Unfortunately there is no backlight turning on. When I press Fn + Space instead a space character is typed. There is a lighting key marked on the left side of the space bar model type is KM BL-106D0, FRU is 04Y2399. Any ideas? DoI need to make some settings or adjustments? I bought the keyboard on Ebay, it was marked as compatible with my E531.  Kind regardsKlaus

Ok. I've spent today turning my computer on an off, attempting to fix my master boot record, run virus scans, and try to diagnose my problem- but for some reason, I'm coming up short. My problem is that: Whenever i power on my desktop (Specs Below) it either: gets stuck on the motherboard splash page; or freezes on the login window. Now on the one or two time's I was able to access my computer, I tried a variety of attacks to combat these errors.

Update: I'm currently commencing a System restore, I will update again if that fixes the issue.

Update: I completed the restore, the problem still persists.

Update: I am able to access the bios, I am awaiting instructions from a more tech savvy person =D.

1. I restarted into troubleshoot/recovery mode and used advanced options to reset my master boot record. I used:
bootrec.exe
bootrec.exe /FixMbr

2. I ran a variety of anti virus programs such as:
-Malwarebytes
-Hitman Pro
-Malwarebytes anti rootkit
-TDSSkiller.
(all came up empty)

After restarting, neither of these options worked. And I was greeted with a screen saying "trying to diagnose your problem," following that was "Attempting to fix" and then finally another restart, which left me back where I had started.
Here are the specs of my computer. I should probably also say that I lost my OS disk (like the genius I am). Feel free to message me or respond with any questions.

Answer:Failing to boot: stuck at motherboard splash.

In most cases, it would help us greatly if you could explain what you were doing prior to this issue occurring. How long has your system been running normally? Also, how long have you been having this issue?

This isn't necessarily important, but I can see that you purchased your PC from one of those "custom PC building" companies. I'm going to guess you chose CyberPowerPC, as I have also made the mistake of purchasing from them.

I am disturbed as a reseller that Lenovo failed to notify owners of a known defect of the Edge 15 Keyboard failure related to the ribbon cable before the replacement ECA-448 in Mid 2013. Users, like me, who don't use the laptop on a daily basis likely, did not use it enough during the ECA period to experience the problem.  NOW I have a defective ThinkPad and the fix is to buy the keyboard. Recently we have seen GM fail to recognize serious problems to avoid recalls for known problems.  I feel that Lenovo failed to notify us that the keyboard was likely to fail for the effected models and should therefore honor the ECA by extending for a period of time after notifying the owners of the condition they may have on models sold before the ribbon cable was adopted.  I do believe and state that ThinkPad and other supported IBM and Lenovo products out of George USA are superior to other computer manufactures.  I hope they take this type of failure to address a known problem seriously and not blemish their reputation.  David  PS: For those who the keyboard issue, you might try putting electric type over the area of the ribbon cable near where if folds at the 90 degree turn. You may see a small dent(s) in the cable where pressure from an adjacent item makes contact on the cable has your palm or other weight near or on the touchpad likely causes the defect over usage and/or pressure.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 won't boot

Hi Matt,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 is not booting up.

I would suggest you to perform Flee Power ? remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Remove the RAM, power it up and check if you hear beep sounds.  Reinstall the RAM, startup normally and check if the system boots normally.

If you have a spare good known battery and adapter, try powering on the system using the same just to ensure that it?s not a battery/adapter failure.

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,
Mithun.

My husband reported the desktop rebooted by itself.  Gave him the Safe Mode, etc. options to continue.  All options led to another reboot.  When I tried it out it sometimes booted back to Windows, but would only stay on for approximately 25 minutes.  Now it will not boot at all.  One time both the back fan and the heat sink fan came on, but the heat sink fan puttered off.  Now only the back fan comes on at power up.  I am not versed with all of the workings of computers.      Jeff did not hear anything out of the ordinary when the computer rebooted.  No clicking or loud sounds.  I'm not sure if the fan was running.  I did smell "heat" when I was checking out the computer, and I know the noisy heat sink fan was not working the whole time.  I'm not sure what to check out first.  I read an article on building a computer in Maximum PC and felt comfortable opening up the box.  When I removed the CPU I noticed the center of the board is burned brown (not charred, but a brown rectangle.)  All of the wires appear to be attached properly and securely.  The fan had dust on it, but didn't appear to be too bad.  Every thing else looks fine.  The only thing newly attached to the computer was a wireless router.  The computer is three years old.  It was built using a SOYO K7VME Socket Barebones Kit, Maxtor120 GB Harddrive, Speeze Socket A... Answer:Computer failing to boot, suspecting bad fan or cpu/motherboard failure

Sounds to me like you have fried you CPU, by continually booting up when you had problems already. The initial problem could of been your CPU overheating, causing the comp to reboot, but there is also the chance it could of been your power supply acting up. However, I do believe you have now fried your CPU. You could try taken this CPU out and giving it a proper coat of thermal paste, just to see what happens, but just make sure you fit the fan and heatsink back properly.

Hi zeezam,

You can reset BIOS by clearing the CMOS.  The steps to do this are in the User Guide :

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-76288

(It should be in this Access Help guide but I can't download it right now to make sure.)

My brother got this laptop as a gift but it stopped booting after a few uses, it will just show the name and say press enter to interrupt boot, I do not know if it's his motherboard or not and would like to know what is up with his laptop. Some suggestions would help as to how I can fix this or get help in fixing it, only recently has he asked and it's been months since it stopped so some help would be appreciated. Also I should mentioned i've never used a thinkpad before.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge will not boot at all

It's pretty difficult to guess what might be wrong without some testing/investigation. The fact that you see a splash screen suggests that the motherboard's video and bios is working. If you are so inclined you could... Press on ON buttom and immediately press F12. Note - you must be pressing 'Fn' button at the lower left when pressing the F12.  This should get to the Boot device list.  If you have a bootable DVD, say from a OS try seeing if the DVD drive works.  If so, chances are there is a problem with your hard disk.  Maybe just a connector or maybe a failed drive. At that point you could remove the back cover and unseat/reseat the drive connector and see it that helps. It could also just be a necessary file in the Windows boot process is corrupted.  The thinkpad has multiple features to allow recovery such as factory recovery disks, Onetouch backup/restore, etc.  Of course, you have to apply those fairly soon after getting the computer. If any of this sounds confusing, then maybe finding a tech to look at it is a better idea. Hope this helps some.

Hello, just received my new E531 Edge Thinkpad from Lenovo. Right now I'm not able to boot from CD, it will always boot into the preinstalled Windows 8. I've tried the F12 method to select a different boot device during startup where I can see the installed DVD RAM drive and select it, but no effect it returns immediately to the select screen. I've played around with the various BIOS setting disabling the secure boot option and changing the boot order so that the DVD drive is first. Then the system will check for the the CD (you can hear it spinning during start up) but will start into Windows 8 right afterwards again. I checked with various bootable CDs as well as DVDs but always same effect. What am I missing? Any other BIOS or Windows 8 settings I need to change for that. I have other Lenovo notebooks running like the X230, the T520 or an older T61 where booting from CD never seems to be an issue. As the DVD drive is working correctly within Windows 8 I assume that it is in general functioning and shouldn't be broken. Any help is very much appreciated! Many thanks in advance. Cheers...

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 13 boot failure

Hi Madfox,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

Some models have a separate partition on the hard drive. This partition contains the factory installed system and program files (Product Recovery program). The Product Recovery program runs independently of the operating system.

To determine if you?re PC has the Product Recovery program on the hard drive, keep tapping F11 key after switching ON the system, this will take you to Recovery drive were you can perform OS re-installation.

Hope this helps.

Hemanth Kumar

Hi, My Thinkpad Edge was stolen the other day. I had it protected with a boot up password, but I am not sure what level of protection this gives. Does it mean that the data I had on the drive is not readable? Or can anyone plug the drive into another machine and read it? Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear about your loss

There are many kinds of passwords in ThinkPad's BIOS, which type did you set? If you didn't set HDD password and/or Supervisor password (which automatically sets master password on the drive), then the data can be accessed by anyone once the HDD would be connected to another system

Hi there, I have just bought the ThinkPad Edge and I am very impressed with the build quality, but I have some issues. 1. Audio hissing when using headphones.2. Boot-up is incredibly slow. Is this something to do with the Lenovo Apps?3. When I turn on my laptop from standby, the wifi wont switch on in the access control app. I end up having to restart the laptop to turn on the wifi. Any help? I am also considering buying an SSD. Is there any limitations in the chipset? I am considering buying the Intel X-25, but is there any point in splashing out on an expensive drive if you aren't going to get the full performance? Otherwise it maybe best to get a Kingston SSD. Thanks, Liam

Hi all. I purchased a Edge E545 that came pre loaded with Win7 Pro 64.  I created the Recovery disks for Win7 and used the Win 8 Disks to upgrade the OS.  I have created a new NTFS partition on my hard drive and would like to install Win 7 to that partition.  I have tried to load the recovery disks to install into that partition but I have not been successful; the boot disk won't even load.  I downloaded the Win7 Pro 64 ISO to try and load it into that partition but the computer does not have the COA sticker under the battery like it's supposed to.  At this point I am at a loss and need help. I have recovery disks that won't load at restart or cold boot and I have a perfectly good ISO that i don't have a COA to. Thanks in advance. Ed

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E545 Dual Boot

Hi Ed,

Even if you get the recovery disks to boot, I don't think they'll give you the option to install into a particular partition.  They'll want the whole disk..I'm not 100% on that, maybe 98%...

I guess machines that came with a Win 7 downgrade installed don't have a CoA sticker.  Recovery media won't need that, but won't do what you want.

You can try using Microsoft's (really strange) method for activating a Win 7 downgrade install: Understanding downgrade rights

Basically (as I understand it) you use an already-in-use Win 7 key to install, let the activation fail, and then call MS.

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 laptop that stopped powering on all of a sudden. It was working fine till one day fine and all of a sudden, does not boot up the next morning. I have googled around and looked in Lenovo Forums and it looks like this is a common issue with motherboard on these types of laptops and that lenovo fixed some of these. Unfortunately, my laptop is out of warranty but I do see that Lenovo fixed similar problems for some laptops that are out of warranty. Please see the two threads below https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/thinkpad-e420-wont-start/td-p/755813https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E420-motherboard-problems/td-p/667009/page/10So, I tried calling customer service multiple times hoping that I could get to talk to a supervisor and explain the problem. Just today, I was told I need to agree to pay $575 (which is much more than what the laptop is worth) to even talk to a supervisor. This is quite disappointing. If any Lenovo support staff is monitoring it, can you help here?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 does not boot up and customer service does not help

Its not the motherboard even though they say it is. All they will do is replace the motherboard and it will just fail on you again. I had the exact same issue and the motherboard was replaced. Next day I used it it failed again. You need to remove the CMOS battery which is located underneath the laptop. Its in the compartment with the one screw. Remove that. Remove the battery and all power supply. Then  plug the CMOS back in and  plug in powercord. Once you have done that start up as normal. Press f1 to enter BIOS. Go to the Config tab and under "power options" disable "rapid intel start." That worked for me as a temporary solution.  It clearly isnt a motherboard fault as all Tech support from Lenovo claim it to be. I mean c'mon I had the exact same fault the day after my motherboard was replaced, but after removing CMOS and battery the motherboard magically starts to work?? Must be related to the W5 problem they have been having with BIOS.  Heres a link to another thread with others with the same problem. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-power-issue/td-p/1326979/page/9 Let me know if this helps at all since no one from Lenovo seems to care about helping their own customers... very dissappointed with the customer service. Personally I dont think Ill ever purchase a lenovo product again after their pathetic execuse for "tech support." Anyway good luck!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge stuck at boot screen after restore

Hey there ellenc and welcome to the forums,

There are a few things that we should take a look at, and we'll need some more information to figure out exactly what we are looking at. What operating system(OS) and machine type and model number are using? This can be found on the stick on the bottom of the laptop, and occasionally in the battery compartment of the laptop.

What you are seeing is that the boot loader that takes the machine from BIOS to the Operating System cannot locate your hard drive for some reason. Have you by chance removed the hard drive and placed it back in? It simply could just not be seated properly.

We will need to check to see if your BIOS sees the hard drive at all. When you start the computer hit the appropriate F# key or enter to interrupt startup and take you to BIOS. Once in BIOS, use your directional keys to move back and forth through the menus. You will want to move over to startup, and move down and open up 'Boot' by pressing enter once over the selection. There should be a list on this page that includes either a ATA HDD or SSD. If you are able, take a picture of this and post so that we can see exactly what you are looking at.

Thanks ellenc.

Now the system didn't start - just the fan and the hd are starting while the red led is shining, but the display is still black and I think, the system does not boot, because the hd makes no "reading noise". The system also didn't boot  with external USB-HD. I performed a google-found-hardware-reset-method pressed the power-button for 60sec while battery was plugged off and started it with power-jack. It doesn't help.Greets

Answer:Thinkpad edge 11 doesn't boot after shutting down from suspend

Hello mate, Remove the RAM, and boot your computer. If it doesn't beep it's a motherboard problem.

Hi,I have a new laptop Lenovo TP Edge E420s with preloaded Windows 7 x64. Something strange started to happen, during normal work it just resets itself and loads System Repair to correct errors, after it's done and I click OK it reboots and the same story repeats all over again ---> System Repair, OK, reboot, System Repair and again and again and again ...After I've seen where this is going, I used Recovery DVD which I've created on first boot to setup the system to it's defaults as it was when I got it.I ask for your help why this is happening and for possible solutions to this problem. Thanks in advance, luky!

Hi,

As usually, there is a notable lack of information regarding BIOS settings. So after updating BIOS to latest version and enabling every secure option inside BIOS, I'd like to know:

WHY it will still say "Secure Boot: Off"?
What is "Operating Mode"?
What is "Secure Boot Mode"?

Help? Ideas? Something?

Thanks.

Well hello, A while ago I dual booted my thinkpad Edge with Linux backtrack. I divided my hd space pretty stupid, because I thought I'd need 200 gb but I never used backtrack again. So I decided to uninstall it and I read somewhere I'd only need to format the partition with backtrack on it. As stupid I am, I followed the advice. Later I found out that the grub loader was still on it so it couldn't boot into windows. I decided to do a clean install of windows 7 ultimate it worked. But I was not satisfied 1 because my hd was still divided in the two partitions and 2 because I'd like to have lenovo thinkvantage on my laptop. There is a partition on my hd called lenovo_recovery. but I can't press f11 when I boot, I can press it actually but it doesn't give any response. And now I want two things 1. I want my hd in one partition again 2. I want to access the recovery partition on my thinkpad and recover the thinkpad  I hope you can help me out with this problem. I already thank you for reading this. Thanks peepz

I may have a hard time describing my situation here, but here goes! ThinkPad Edge E530c that on boot-up has dozens of 'hiccups' where the Windows 7 loading animation freezes for 1 second, resumes, freezes, resumes, etc.  Then when it's in Windows (after the 'Welcome to Windows sound even sounds distorted) ... Moving the cursor around (whether I use the trackpad or an external USB mouse) it'll freeze for a second, resume for a second, freeze for a second, etc.. For about 1 - 2 minutes.  After that 1 - 2 minute mark of being in Windows, it seems fine.  But it makes for 3 - 4 total minutes of annoyance during the boot-up process. We did a re-install of Windows, tested all hardware, even cloned the hard drive over to a SSD for a performance boost -- nothing seems to have helped. I haven't finished all the Windows updates yet and can't say for sure if it was doing this immediately after the re-install of Windows or if it started after a certain Windows update was loaded.  (I may try a System Restore to yesterday and see.)

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E530c - Hiccup at Boot, Cursor Freezes constantly for 1 second each time!

Also check with uninstalling Anti-virus application.

Hi. So, the wonderful people here have helped me out before, and I'm hoping they can do the same again!

About two weeks ago, I had an incident where randomly, my laptop started typing gibberish instead of the actual keys I was pressing. For example, on pressing "e" I got something like "ce3d" or something. It did this in my browser, in Skype, in Windows (password entry and search) and in MS Word, so I figured it must be a keyboard error. I'm not exactly the carefullest of people so it didn't seem unreasonable that a crumb or something had gotten in to the keyboard and was disrupting things. I tried various fixes - vacuuming my keyboard, attempting to download new keyboard drivers from Toshiba and running MBAM, but to no avail. Eventually I gave up and went to bed. Lo and behold, come morning, everything was working as normal again, and I carried on life as usual.

Then, yesterday, I randomly got BSODed. I made a backup, because I was pretty convinced it was a warning sign... Read more

Hi,  I have a Thinkpad Yoga S1 which has served me well for a year or so.  Recently it has started to develop a problem where it "stalls" upon boot.  1. Laptop is powered off2. Press power button3. laptop keyboard lights up and fan begins spinning4. about 3 seconds later the entire system shuts down5. The process repeats Sometimes I can leave it in this cycle for 3+ minutes and it'll just keep cycling. If I close the screen it halts the cycle (shuts the computer down) and occassionally upon power up it'll cycle a couple of times and then boot into Windows. Here is a video of the symptom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THCn6yFuprY   When it has booted into Windows, I have taken the liberty of running a Lenovo Solution Centre hardware scan. Processor, Memory and Motherboard all came back good. However, when I tried to update the BIOS, the system returned an "Error-116 Failed to read BIOS from ROM" Further, "Error 116" is listed as an IBM System board read/write error.  Unfortunately my warranty ran out a couple of months ago, so I'm looking at a self fix, and don't have any appetite to pay £800 for a new main board (besides, the one in my laptop was a new one installed by IBM under a warranty repair 4 months ago! It shouldn't be broken).  Can anyone suggest any fixes?

Or any other help.THANKS!

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Answer:Numeric Keypad (on Fn+alpha keys) missing on Thinkpad X1 and Thinkpad Edge

As you are experiencing Fn+ alpha numeric keys are not working, I would suggest you to please update the Power Manager software and also update the Bios of your system from the below mentioned web link.

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi,  I am new to this community. I have been given a computer that was once used by a business who had done something funny to it. There is no recovery partition and when I put in a CD or DVD the computer doesn't recognize. I am trying to recover the computer with a wipe and reload. It was pre-installed with Windows 8 but does not appear to be anywhere in the computer as the only located Windows install that came up in command prompt was the Windows 7 Enterprise installed by the business.  I have spoken to Lenovo on the phone who said that I require Win 8 64 bit. I have that and am trying to boot from the live USB but it doesn't work. It had worked, before I had changed things in diskpart, but I only went into that because when I tried to restore to factory settings the computer came up with the error "Reset the PC as the required partition is not available" I had found a solution to this on Youtube and copied the guy but stuffed something up and now I can't get back into Command Prompt to correct the problem. I am now completely stuck in Boot Menu/Application Menu page. I cannot enter Windows start up page and I cannot boot from any live USB. I am stuck. There is also NO novo button on my keyboard.  Please help! Thank you.

Answer:Can't dual boot windows 7 with windows 8 on Thinkpad edge S430

Hi,

I'm not familiar with "rufus".  Here's how I make UEFI-bootable flash drives:  format with a single FAT32 partition.   Use something like 7zip to extract the Windows ISO contents to the flash drive.  That's all.   Boot it in UEFI mode.  You'll have  to disable secure boot and enable CSM support.

You might give that a try.  I'm a little suspicious that UEFI bootability is broken if you can boot in legacy mode.  Maybe the drive is NTFS?  That won't boot in UEFI mode.

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.

I am trying to browser stream (In this case History Channel) from my PC (Win10) to my Xbox One. The first problem would be that every time there is a commercial it stops the stream on my Xbox forcing my PC to go to the next episode like the last one had ended, and returns to the app on the xbox like the stream was stopped "ended". But I also can't just reconnect right away either, it can take up to about 5 tries to get it connected again, either it just says "starting" on my xbox, and acts "connected" on my PC while both screens are black and I have to disconnect and try again, or the picture will load on my xbox but be frozen until I disconnect. biggest issue would be the commercial's ending the stream, but also not exactly fun having to try so many times to connect. I could be wrong but I believe that the issue is on the PC end.
Any help would be amazing.
Thanks

I suggest you use the "Windows Feedback Hub" to report these two issues. I just filed one bug about having to keep casting. You may want to search for that, upvote and file another about the issues in reconnecting.
I doubt anyone here can fix these for you as they sound like OS limitations/issues. But I'd love to hear if someone has seen this and worked something out.

Hello All -I'm posting to the forum as I'm at a complete loss with support. I recently purchased a ThinkPad T450s, which worked well for about a week, but has since failed to boot properly after normal use. The motherboard / system board has been replaced three times by Lenovo support (twice with the depot and once on-site). After receiving the system yesterday from the depot (again after normal use and trying to resume from sleep mode), the ThinkPad won't boot. The power light blinks on and the backlit keyboard lights up for a few seconds, only to have the system shut itself down with a light pop. This cycle repeats with the system attempting to power up anywhere from two attempts to eleven (no BIOS flashes or any other signs of life). I've tried all options noted in the forum and suggestions from support (remove battery, hard reset, etc.), but haven't had any luckAgain, I'm at a loss, and simply want my system to work or be replaced. If anyone has any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.??Thank you!

hi i have just fitted a ssd to replace a failing hdd, now it seems my pc does not like it, very slow post (then fast into windows) random non boots changing boot orders just feeling perplexed cant put my finger on anything ,i am even considering flashing the bios, has anybody any better ideas? (gigabyte board q6600 chip 4gb ram )

Answer:is my motherboard failing now?

Could be a failing PSU.
Things to try first:
clear the CMOS or load defaults,
check the CMOS battery,
flash the BIOS.
If problem persists then strip it back to one RAM stick and the CPU then see if it POSTS. If it does then fit the graphics card and try again, if OK then install the SSD and try a boot. If it boots then progressively add back all the other peripherals testing as you go.
If it fails at any point then it could either be what you have just added or the PSU failing due to the increased load.
Alternatively replace the PSU anyway as its always useful to have a spare as its a quick way of eliminating it in the future.

Hello everyone, this is my first time on the Tech Support Guy forums. I've been having some kind of problem with my computer and I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I'm beginning to suspect that something is wrong with my motherboard, but since I'm no expert I can't be sure that it is the source of my problems. I have an ASUS CUSL2 with a Pentium III 815E chip.

At first, the problem began when my computer would not boot up one day. I would keep hitting the power button, then nothing. So I opened the case, made sure everything was connected properly and it did eventually boot up. But the problem persisted intermittently. So I figured that I probably had a bad power switch and replaced it.

Apparently that wasn't the main issue because while I was now getting the computer to boot up it would often just power itself down into some kind of bizarre suspend mode that I couldn't get it out of. I would have to literally unplug the computer to get it to completely shut off. At this point I thought there must be something wrong with the power supply (it was a 300W unit that I'd owned for about 3 years or so). So I went out and replaced my power supply with a nice 500W Ultra Connect power supply.

Well, just when I thought my problems were over I am finding out they've only just begun. Now my computer is doing weird things like when I try to power it down it will go through the Windows shutdown screen but freeze at the very end. The hard d... Read more

Hey everyone, and thanks in advance if you can help me out on this one. I've had this Mobo for a while now and I think it finally crapped out on me (ECS L7VMM3)..
Quick walkthrough:

I'm listening to music (which is located on my E: drive), and my music starts skipping. I reset my computer, and after it boots up I look at my E: drive and it says it needs to be formatted (which is BS). So I shut down, remove it, boot it back up and then I get a "partition table" error. So I shut it down once more, and let it cool down for about 10 minutes. Start it back up, and now none of my IDE components are being detected (My HDD, DVD drive). After it doesn't detect that, it takes me to some sort of screen which I'm looking at now. It says: "Analyzing network media type, this will take several seconds..". I guess it detects it, and after it does it goes back to the same screen I'm looking at and it analyzes it again.. hopefully I can provide more info soon as to seeing if my HDD's are still ok but I don't see why not..

Thanks again.

Welcome to MajorGeeks

Have you tried booting with just the boot drive connected?
How many hard drives and optical drives do you have altogether?

Some more system information would be useful too (especially power supply)
