Thinkpad Edge 11 Hard drive Caddy

Question: Thinkpad Edge 11 Hard drive Caddy

Hi, having recently upgraded the stock hard drive to an SSD in my Edge 11 laptop, I've misplaced the carrier part that secures the drive to the laptop, preventing it from coming out when knocked or moved. Everything works apart from when the drive comes loose and the laptop then needs a re-boot, as well as removing the back plate to refit it. As you can imagine, this is a massive inconvenience, especially when I'm out.I've called Lenovo support but the rep i talked to didn't seem to know anything about a caddy to secure it, and said he could not help me as it is a third party hard drive. Does anyone on here have any idea where I can buy one, or even have one themselves to sell? Any help appreciated, thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad Edge 11 Hard drive Caddy

joecarver, welcome to the forum,

the only easy way to get hold of the hdd caddy is to purchase a hard drive from Lenovo as an accessory or spare part for your system.

One of the sponsors of forum.thinkpads.com may offer them, (see advert at the top of the boards), but they are unfortunately in the USA. You may have some luck and someone here pops up with the unknown FRU number or has a broken system which they are parting out.

Good luck!

Hello Lenovo community, Im completely floored as to why no one has even bothered to ask this question, even when i searched it on google.com.  Is it possible to have a second hard drive in a thinkpad edge 14 series by removing the optical DVD storage device with a HDD caddy?  If so what type of hard drive caddy would i need, and if you could please link to it. Much appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 2nd Hard drive Caddy

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The Slbook doesn't mention anything about SATA HDD Bay adapter, even the optical drive is not termed Ultrabay, I think it's suffice to say that such expandability option doesn't exists for Edge.

Hope this helps.

Can anybody recommend where you could buy a cheap (and quality) hard drive caddy for Thinkpad Edge E530...? All I can get from my local store is a harddrive caddy designed for T-series and it costs 100eur, far over my budget. I could order from UK or Germany internet shop if somebody just confirms me a working model with url or something ...

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 hard drive caddy cheap in Europe...?

I did find one that costs 35eur with postage. But it is meant for T-series I suppose: http://www.ok1.de/Ultrabay-III-HDD-SLIM-SATA-Adapter--611.html?XTCsid=295d06ol2ukqh930o1bmqd3q04  1. Does a caddy meant for T420, T520, T430, T530 etc... work in Edge E530...? And does it fit well enough so that you dont get any too big gaps near the outer layer of casing...? 2. Can you still get this product cheaper from somewhere...?

Hi. I have Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E530 (i7-3632qm I think it was) from September 2012. I installed hard drive caddy/bay in place of the DVD-ROM drive 1-2 years ago. I have lately noticed that the harddrive turns off very often. I has done this before, maybe from day one but I always thought that it is mean to do that (power saving). Now that for the first time I use the harddrive actively (with Sample Libraries when doing music) I started to notice that it really is a problem. There are constant delays when the harddrive has turned off while I do something and when I load the next sample it first needs to turn back on. I suspect (I hope I am wrong) that it is a BIOS hardcoded feature as BIOS maybe thinks that there is a DVD-drive connected, which would be the normal use case. The caddy which I am using was meant for Thinkpad T-series, but I removed a part from the edge so it went nicely inside E530. I also had to disconnect one pin (by cutting the soldering) from the caddy, because otherwise the machine would not even boot (I think it was boot loop, BSOD or something, I dont remember. I am on Win7. I did a clean install and installed only the most neccessary drivers (no lenovo bloatware). When the harddrive is in use it works fine. E.g. I just transferred 23GB file from my other computer via LAN and during writing this file the hard drive does not power off. It seems to do this only when it thinks it is not needed.  I have set from Win7 power optio... Read more

It seems tricky to find a model for the E550... the only information I could collect is that the 12.7mm  for the T420 DOES NOT FIT on the E550: http://www.amazon.com/Nimitz-Drive-Caddy-Lenovo-Thinkpad/dp/B00NAMU8NO/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=144546... The explanatiom being that the caddy on the E550 is a 9.5mm Now, many generic 9.5mm caddy  exist, but few of them are advertised for Lenovo, and are from sellers abroad, like China or Nederlands...and will take ages to ship: http://hddcaddy.com/nl/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1143-lenovo-thinkpad-edge-e550-hdd-caddy.html  The only Caddy I could find in the U.S: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2nd-SATA-Hard-Drive-HDD-Caddy-adapter-for-Lenovo-ThinkPad-E550-US-SELLER... Any expertise is very welcome!? ;=0)))

To those in the forum I recently damaged my thinkpad edge laptop 15" after not long ago having to reload every program and everything onto it, it takes me sometimes a week to get things back to normal. It's damaged irrepairably but the hard drive is Ok. I've now bought a thinkpad G570. Can I simply replace the hard drive int he G570, with the pre-loaded harddrive from the THinkpad, and will it just load up and work? The solution that has been offered to me so far ist to buy the sata -usb cable, and attach the old hard drive to the new g570 and go through the one key recovery and transfer the whole system that way. Any ideas would be great. I'd prefer just to swap the new hard drive for the old.

Answer:Replacing Ideapad Hard Drive with Pre-loaded Thinkpad Edge hard drive

Hi, RichardBarclay

Provided the hard drives are the same size and use the same connection, there is no reason that the new computer shouldn't recognize it. And provided the new hard drive is simply removed and not touched until you're sure the old hard drive works, then there shouldn't be any danger in trying. If, for some reason, the old hard drive doesn't work in the new computer, then I would recommend getting a SATA-USB cable to simply transfer the files. And you may want to do that anyway as it is, in my opinion, a useful device to have in case you ever want to transfer data between drives again.

Best of luck,
Adam

Hi, Posting this in case anyone is looking to replace their optical drive with a second HDD. I purchased HDD caddy for my Edge 14. On Ebay I bought one listed as: 12.7mm 2nd SATA Hard Drive HDD Caddy for Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E430 E425 E420 (from seller excellent_accessory) and it's outside dimensions were exactly the same as my optical drive. I just told the seller the model number of my optical drive (by looking in device manager). The trim piece from my optical drive fit directly onto the caddy without much issue to give a clean look. Didn't have any trouble detecting the second drive in Windows, was pretty much plug and play.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14 second hard drive

Thanks for posting this, I too just ordered the caddy, got everything installed. It shows up in device manager, but nowhere on the computer, I cant see it. Any ideas?

I've seen this topic for other models but not for the E420. I have about 60g left out of my 500G stock HDD and was wondering if I could replace the dvd drive with another hard drive. I'm not sure of the process to do this as I just heard that some laptops let you do the swap. What parts would I need?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 2nd Hard Drive Possible?

you can replace the dvd drive with a hdd caddy, but it is not a Lenovo oem part, this is an aftermarket part. There is a screw on the bottom of the laptop, which holds the optical drive in place, just unscrew that and remove the drive. you can google for the hdd caddy on ebay. You can also get a mSATA drive and put it in your E420.

Hi, I am considering replacing my thinkpad edge hard drive with an SSD but i have a few questions first. Is it possible to replace the hard drive under the cover? it looks like the whole bottom is a cover ... is this true? Does removing the cover void warranty? Can I install W7 using any cd and the COA number or do i need a lenovo specific CD? Id like to avoid the lenovo software in the new install if possible. Thanks Clem

Answer:Replacing the Hard drive in a Thinkpad Edge 11

Yes, no problem. I've exchanged the default 320 Gb harddrive with a 640 Gb Seagate. You just unscrew the three screws on the bottom plate, and then you have access to the harddrive, which has a further two screws in the mounting device. I don't think that you'll void the garanty, because you also have to access under the plate if you want to use the 3G modem.I don't know which cd's you have to use, I just cloned my drive.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E430 with Micro Hard Drive..?

the 16 gigs mSATA will be used as a large cache for the regular HD, much like what Intel Turbo memory was, but it will have better algorithms applied to predict usage pattern.

The original drive has failed but managed to copy most users data.
Tried to run image backup but drive is too far gone.
Also tried cloning drive with Acronis boot disk but still fails.
Is there an ISO of the image I can download and burn a factory image restore disk?
I don't want to have to install from a Windows DVD then download all the drivers and software if that is even possible on this model.

ThinkPad Edge hard drive failed while still under warranty.  I took the machine to a local Lenovo warranty service provider for repairs--they've notified me that Lenovo says the serial number for the defective hard drive doesn't match their records and they will not authorize a replacement. This laptop was purchased from Lenovo Direct Sales (internet) and has never left my possession (or even been outside my home).  It was used lightly (primarily for personal emails--lest than 2-3 hours/week). I wouldn't know how to replace a hard drive, or even think of doing it myself.   The hard drive that's in the machine is what was shipped to me from Lenovo--if the part number doesn't match their records it's due to a problem with their record keeping.   The repair center is at a loss as to what to do next, as am I.  I think this is just another way for Lenovo to not honor their warranty.  Judging from the negative feedback I've read on the internet, this is rather common.

Answer:Size of hard drive bay for Thinkpad Edge E430? and SATA 300 vs 600

Ivy Bridge CPU in the E430 supports SATAIII (6 Gb/s) for the main hdd and optical drive bay. The height of the E430 hdd bay is suitable for 7 and 9.5 mm (not sure what that equates to in inches).

I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... how do i get to my laptop [thinkpad edge 0302-45u] back to factory settings with a clean hard drive. including also the os windows 7 back to factory setings. i have minimal computer knowledge. i backed up everything i needed already on a usb storage device.

Answer:[thinkpad edge 0302-45u] back to factory settings with a clean hard drive. how?

You need the backup disks, unless you have a recovery partition.  You should have been prompted to make these when you first booted the computer. If the computer is under warranty, you can have Lenovo send you recovery disks.  If not they are some $50 or something like that.  If you are like me and think it is stupid to repay for something that is already yours, you can proabbyl find windows7 legitimate downlaods on the internet somewhere.  I have seen links for them before on sevenforums. But I never actually followed them,  You can then use your key on the sticker on your computer to reinstall.  Though this will not result in al the extra crap lenovo ships with their computers (though I think it is all crap anyways... including windows).

I'm planning on upgrading my existing 320Gb internal hard drive to a 1Tb Internal Hard Drive. Would a 1Tb Hard Drive with a SATAII Interface be the correct one to use. Can anyone suggest what is the easiest way of replacing this drive? Kind Regards, Simon Thwaites

Answer:Re: Upgrading Internal Hard Drive (Thinkpad Edge E520 Model Number 1143CTO)

just remove the bottom plate, and remove the hdd from the laptop (held down by two screws) to the laptop chassis. The hdd is in a caddy held down by 4 screws. As long as the hdd is 2.5 inch and 9.5 mm thick then you would be okay. The SATA interface is SATAIII (6.0 Gbps), which can operate at SATAI and SATAII mode, depending on the hdd you have.

I just bought an ultrabay caddy for my Thinkpad Edge E530 (3632QM i7 quad core). The ultrabay first did not fit inside but I removed some plastic juts from it with a knife and drill . Now it fits in the slot, and the hard drive does seem to work when the machine is on. The only problem is that when you try to shut down the computer or reboot, it "thinks" for about 10 minutes before it actually shuts down the computer or reboots. I tried many things, I installed OS from scratch and it still does it. Immediately when I disconnect the ultrabay and put the machine on again the problem disappears. I tried changing various settings from BIOS but it does not help. I disabled rapidstart and removed the 16GB SSD, no change. OS is Win7-64bit. Any idea what could be causing this...? I think the most logical quess would be that something assumes that there is still an optical drive inside the computer even that there isn't and this causes the delay. Although I really don't understand how this could be as SATA is standard bus and you should be able to connect anything into it.   By the way the Ultrabay i bought  is made by Leicke:http://www.amazon.co.uk/LEICKE-Ultrabay-Enhanced-Adapter-Thinkpad/dp/B007II8O32/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&q...  BIOS version is the latest (was it 2.08 or something...?)

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E530 + Ultrabay extra hard drive = 10minute freeze on reboot...?

OK, so I examined the issue more and it seems to be about power management. When I disable Intel Speedstep and  the setting below it (CPU Power Management was it...?), this problem disappears. I also noticed that the same delay is when I try to get the computer to sleep. Of course it is not really good idea to use a laptop without these settings being on so another solution must be found. I guess there must be BIOS support for a hard drive in the DVD-bay in order for it to work with power management enabled. The question is that 1. should there be such a support...? 2. if there isn't will there be with a BIOS update...? Btw.. I tested with 2 hard drives with both the same issue.   If it becomes clear that there is no way to get a hard drive to work in DVD-bay with power management on, can you make such configuration that you buy 256GB msata SSD, install OS into it, and have a hard drive in the normal HD-bay...? Or would the machine go crazy when it tries to search for a non-existing rapidstart partition from msata...?

I bought a esata-sata cable and tried to connect a esata external hard drive througn a sata 2nd hard drive caddy. The result is that my T42 can not detect the external hard drive. The caddy, cable, and the external hard drive are all functional with other setups. As I know, the signal of esata and sata are the same. It should be just passing through. I don't understand why it fails. I observed that both the leds on the caddy and above the caddy are lighting when I boots T42. However, both leds dims after that. Any suggestion?PS. I know using a pcmcia will be easier. However, several reviews confirmed that the writing speed is limited to 30 MB/s through pcmcia. The writing speed on the caddy is at least 55 MB/s when I tested it with a 2.5 in hard drive.

Yes for documents, music, film and photos. You can even transfer any zipped files for extracting and installing. Just find the folders and files. As for the installed programs on the XP disc, then no, you can't transfer them.

Hi

I'm helping out a friend to try and recover data from her crashed computer. i have a USB / IDE caddy, have removed the hard drive and plugged in - having removed the jumper from the back panel as advised (in fact I've also tried it plugged into the slave part).

I connect up, the blue light comes on on the caddy - I have seen drive letter H assigned to it in disk management but can not see the drive assigned within my computer so cannot access the drive. So it's as if the drive is seen *somewhere* on the pc but not in a way that I can access it or download the data from.

As I have already done this for my own pc (connected a hard drive and downloaded all data) I know that I CAN do it but not on this hard drive for some reason.

I've even downloaded tweak ui in case a drive letter wasn't able to be seen but that doesn't help either.

When I connect the hard drive the whole pc slows down as well - so it is seen somewhere by this pc.

Any thoughts much appreciated!

Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?
Thank you.

Can anyone point me to the right hard drive caddy for the X4 dock (not X4 ultrbase) - I have an UltraBay Slim caddy but it has a protruding tab which prevents me using in the X4 dock (though it's specs are otherwise correct).

As far as I can tell from the Lenovo parts listings a caddy w/- the FRU 62P4553 *should* fit (though they cover themselves with the clause "some products may not be compatible") but it doesn't say whether I should be putting a SATA or a PATA drive in this caddy ... Can anyone help?

My external hard drive went bad. I would like to replace it in its caddy, which I like. But I notice when I took the HD out of the caddy, that there are no actual connections. There is a metal area on the side of the hard drive which I presume is a contact. I don't recall seeing this "contact" on other hard drives.
Do all hard drives have such a contact? How do I know if the HD I buy will operate when I install it in the caddy?
Many thanks for advice or links.
Jack

Answer:Replace hard drive in caddy

Can you post an image of the connection. Some HP and Dells have a plastic plastic adapter that attaches to the serial connections.

Hi Guys,    So Recently I purchased a ThinkPad T420 with 16 gb RAM and 240 gb SSD. I am Planning to swap the hard drive with a anopther HDD opr a ssd. I was wondering if someone can help me with suggestions. I know i ahve to buy a 12.7mm bay for hdd. But does the hard drive bay has to have a eject button ? with a SATA III hard drive bay work? I was looking at this one : http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Notebook-12-7mm-SATA-CD-ROM-Optical-Drive-Bay-for-2nd-HDD-Hard-Drive-Cadd...Will this work? Also should I get a normal rotational HDD for the 2nd Hard drive or a ssd ? Cheers

I've got a 250GB SATA Western Digital hard drive installed in my PC. I've never had any problems with it, but I want to buy another internal hard drive and a caddy so I can back up/clone the current one in case it fails. In the event of a failure, I'd remove the back-up drive from the caddy and install it in the PC.Here are my questions:1. Would you stick with Western Digital or are there better makes?2. Are caddies much of a muchness or would you recommend a particular make?3. Because of my plan to install the back-up drive in the PC in the event of a failure, would it have to have the same capacity (250GB) or could I buy something larger? Thanks.

Answer:Which internal hard drive and caddy?

Caddies are much of a muchness - IMHO aluminium ones are better from a heat point of view. I use caddies myself for both of my hard drives.BUT - for a backup drive I use an external USB unit - it's far simpler to plug and unplug when needed than a caddy.AND - I don't clone, I image4 - which is just as straightforward as cloning in the event of failure (though it takes longer), and uses significantly less drive space. It means I can get three full images (grandfather, father, son) on my backup drive - plus a daily data backup.AND - it makes no difference what make of drive you use. You can use a small lightweight 2.5" drive, which needs no external PSU if you like.

I love this computer, but I would like to use the hard drive caddy and there are no instructions.  I can't find any at the support site either.   Is there a manual somewhere?

Answer:I bought I used t61 with a hard drive caddy.

Hi

You can download the manual from here: click me!

Check chapter 1020, page #62 (from the manual, not the page number from your pdf viewer). You'll see the instructions to remove/insert the ultrabay device.

You can also check this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbVhzmLVtdQ  I'm not sure if it's a T61 for the principle is the same.

Hi all,I have in the past had a pretty severe PC fiddling habit!I have therefore piles of kit that are last generation at the best, all serviceable but not in best nick or any semblance of order.I am minded just to have a great big sell up, stick it all in once box and sell it all for about a 100th of what it all cost in it's day.I have relocated, have no space and no time for toys so it makes some sense. However I will hold on to Hard drives from the ages as I do not want and old data floating around in strangers hands. So, to the question, any recommendations for a desk top caddy I can drop an old ide drive into and salvage anything I want before taking a sledge hammer to the drive?Looking for quality and reliability, have had Chinese versions that haven't lasted the course and will expect a USB interface at the PC end! Thanks for help in advance, Brgds, Epirb.

Answer:T43 2nd Hard Drive Bay Caddy not working

Sounds like you should probably get a genuine part, or perhaps you got a defective generic, of the drive isn't fully engaged in the plug. Can you tell if the bios regognizes the drive as being there?  Also, is this an IDE or SATA adapter?

They're probably 3.5" (measure the width which will actually measure about 4" if they're 3.5" drives) and most likely to be IDE, but check this. Which connection do they have on the back?

Answer:Hard Drive Dock/caddy

I assume from looking at the specs on the old caddy that your hard drive is a SATA.
The docking station, some people call them "toasters" supports SATA and has its own source of power so it should work fine.

Why WD in particular? It is more important to know what type of interface it is using, other than that, a 2.5" drive should fit in any 2.5" caddy.

Jumpers must be set to master when using IDE drives in a caddy.
Is the T40 detecting the caddy when plugged into the USB port?
Cab you see the drive in disk management?

I have looked around the "on-line" stores and am wondering under what heading to look, or what form of words to use, as Caddy is no help at all. Also any advice as to the type of connections and or specification to have will be gratefully received. The old Drive is a couple of years old and about 80GB, so I don't wish to dump it, but to use it as a backup device for my Laptop. The reason for the need may be a lesson to some of us. My previous PC was built into a "Small Form" MiniQ Case. The PSU blew and a replacement is no longer available as it was specific to the Case. So I am now being helped to put all the old bits into a new Case and upgrading to a 250GB HDD.

I find hard drive terminology a bit confusing. All these SATA and PATA acronyms...!I have an external HDD in a USB caddy, for backing up. However, it's a bit small, and I want to fit a new, larger capacity one.The data connection to the HDD within the caddy is the good old grey multi-strand ribbon cable that's been used within PC's for yonks. Am I right in thinking that, so long as the drive I buy is specified as "IDE", then that's the type of data connection it will have? While I'm at it, does anyone have recommendations for a good deal on a drive - about 200GB?Thanks for any advice.

I have a hard drive taken from a PC that died on me (motherboard failure)
I put it in a caddy and connected to my new Pc and tried to format it. When trying to format it the Drive letter came up as "C" which it was on the old PC, my new Pc has the same drive letter and I was afraid I would damage my new Pc so I cancelled the formatting.
I went to computer - manage - Disk management, and tried to assign a new drive letter but not successfully Drive G. this flashes up intermittently.
Is there anything I can do to formatt this hard drive.

Answer:Hard drive in caddy will not format

You should be able to assign a new identity to the (now external) drive unless for some reason your PC is recognising it as a 'primary' drive, have a look at this article it may help.
I would suggest that you identify positively the drive in the caddy, right click it and 'delete' it. This should remove the header and allow you to format it fully.

Hello, I have a thinkpad T520 and I recently purchased the "ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III" from lenovo.com however it didn't come with a hard drive caddy like the internal drive has

This looks like the hard drive caddy it requires.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Thinkpad-X60-X60s-X61s-Hard-Drive-2-5-Caddy-Kit-YG35A-/320721833450?pt=PCC_D...

Without this the drive will rattle/move around in the bay adapter and not have a firm fit.

It seems very odd to me that lenovo didn't include this considering that it seems to be required. I paid $60 for that bay adapter and I see those drive caddies going for as low as $4 on ebay.

Does anyone know a place where I can get one that does not in anyway involve ebay or paypal? I can't seem to find them on lenovo's site other than having to buy one of their hard drives that seem to include one.

I have a 200gig hard drive on my T61.  Since my computer has died twice in a year I want to have a cloned hard drive handy to insert and not miss a beat and not fuss with reinstalling everything. When I bought the machine I also bouht a hard drive caddy...http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?... I bought a SATA 500 gig hard drive and inserted this into the hard drive caddy.I inserted the caddy into the CD drive area. Now what?  When I click on "My Computer" I do not see the drive listed? Do I need special software to make a clone of my hard drive on here?   Recommendations?I thought Lenovo had one that came with it, but I do not see anything?Should "My Computer" see this drive with the caddy? All advice greatly appreciated!!

Answer:Hard drive caddy - T61 - How does this thing work?

I received the caddy from newmodeus and I popped in the hdd, which came with W520 primary bay, into the ultrabay.everything is running fine, but the speed in HWINFO64 is shown as 1.5Gb/s. however the HDD itself support SATA II, which is supposed to be 3.0Gb/s. anything wrong with my setup or caddy? I emailed the newmodeus and the replied me that "Our caddy has a pass-through SATA connection. It will support the maximum speed your optical drive controller will support". any thought on this? Thanks

Answer:Hard drive in Ultrabay Caddy shows 1.5Gb/s

Tolgcc: The hard drive caddies are nothing more than a fancy version of a cable that connects the drive to the computer. If the drive is not operating at fast speeds, probably best to go troubleshooting somewhere else, although I don't really know where to suggest. I have an Intel application on my computer called "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" - that displays the SATA transfer speed of the disc - you might want to have a look at that application, and also check to make sure you have the latest version of that application and the driver associated with it. The easiest way to get it is to use the Lenovo System Update tool. Michael

I bought a T500 on ebay that didn't comne with the hard drive caddy to hold the drive in the bay.  I was wondering if any of the caddies sold on eBay would work or if there are different sizes for that part.  From what I can tell all of the caddies seems to be the same with the metal bracket and the rubber rails. Thank you

Answer:T systems hard drive caddy question

There are 2 sizes of caddy to fit 9.5mm drives and 7mm drives. Your machine was designed to work with a 9.5mm drive. There are 3 kinds of rubber rails:1) fits 7mm drives, 7mm caddy, 7mm drive space.2) fits 9.5mm drives, 9.5mm caddy, 9.5mm drive space3) fits 7mm drives, 7mm caddy, 9.5 mm drive space

Hello all, I am planning on installing an SSD in place of the standard 750 GB hard drive that came with my Y480. I still want to use it and have been looking into getting a caddy to replace the optical drive. However, I can't find any solutions that don't look like they're cheaply built or from a shady operation. Has anyone here found/bought/used and had a reliable experience with a hard drive caddy? Links appreciated. Thanks!   Actually, I am now looking at this product from NewmodeUS: Y480 HDD CaddyHas anyone had any dealings with this company?

I recently upgraded the HDD in my Aspire E5-551 to SSD to speed up the system.  So far, it works like a charm.  Bootup is crisp and quick and the system is running smoother than ever.  I would like to use the original HDD as a storage drive and I would like to mount it in the (currently empty) ODD bay using a standard caddy unit.  I purchased two different HDD caddies and both show the same problem.  The unit installs just fine and indicates that it is powered, but the second drive does not show up in This PC or in Disk Management.  I have no doubt that I likely missed a step or two in the install, so I'm curious if anyone has been able to do this with their systems and if anyone was able to find the workaround so the drive can be accessed.  Any info would be helpful.  Thanks. For the record, my unit is now Windows 10 with the most recent BIOS update (ver 1.12).

i want to use the DVD tray to add a 2nd hard drive using one of the many 2nd HD Hard Drive Caddy Trays i see online, but i want to use a solid state drive in it.  Can this be done? From what i ascertain via product literature, it appears that any caddy tray i see online says "accepts 2.5' 12.7MM SATA HDD only" or some such."  While there are many SSD's that are 2.5 inch, I've only seen ones that are either 7mm or "7mm (with 9.5mm adapter)."  Is there a product (either a T520-compatible 9.5mm caddy tray or a 12.77mm SSD) that can make this work?  thanks.

Hi,

I have a Seagate Freeagent 250gb external hard drive for my laptop. Recently (after a friend stood on it) the USB jack has been pushed inside the casing. I went to a repair place but they said theyll charge about 100 pounds to resolder the jack. So I'm looking into buying a caddy off ebay, removing the hard drive from the seagate casing, and accessing it that way.

The thing is, I know absolutely nothing about the process..are all caddies universal to work with all types of hard drives? Have seagate encrypted their hard drives to only work in their casing?

These are probably very stupid questions but I know very little about hardware. any help will be greatly appreciated. also, please dont be too technical in your answers, treat me like a baby.

Thanks

I have a hard drive but...

Any ideas where I could get a Hard drive caddy or cable for this Everex Stepnote I bought. It is probably standard generic for 1997 but where can I get one?

Are there any alternatives?

Thanx
Ryan

Answer:Everex Stepnote SE hard drive caddy :(

Hard drives made prior to 1998 may have had three screw holes on the sides and two of them were no more than 1 1/2 inches apart. All of the hard drive manufactures agreed on a new mounting hole pattern for 1998 and newer hard drives. This new pattern places the screw holes to within 1/2 inch of each end of the drive, long wise. This pattern places the mounting screw pattern 3 inches apart, long wiseClick to expand...

from a quick Google searchhttp://shop.store.yahoo.com/laptopupgrade/laphardrivca.html

I would do a search for large dealers and start calling 800 numbers. most of them probably have resources to check with or can at least point you in the right direction.

I have a 160 Maxtor Hard Drive as my mine drive running at 67 mb per sec and a identical hard drive running in a caddy.Up to a few weeks ago I could load the PC with 2 hard drives in about 2 minutes and I still can if I remove the Caddy drive but if I startup with both drives it takes about 5 minutes.Checking the speed of the Caddie drive it is about 3 MB per sec and to make an image drive without the caddie takes about 12 minutes and with the Caddie about 50 minutes as against previously it took about 13 minutes with the Caddie.I am not trying to confuse you but to show how the Caddies drive as slowed Down.Is it possible that the Caddie Connection as become faulty over the last 3 years and if I connect the 2nd hard drive direct to the PC without the Caddie things will improve.

I have the laptop B590 (Intel Celeron 1.8GHz, 6GB RAM, 320 GB HD) and I have installed Linux (Ubuntu 13.10 64bit). Then I bought a second hard drive (120 GB), replaced the 320GB drive with this one, and installed Windows 7 64bit after the installation I have put back the 320GB drive and I bought a HDD caddy where I have put the 120GB drive and put it instead of the CD/DVD drive. The problem is that when I start the laptop and press F12 (to select boot device) the 120GB drive is not there ! I can't boot from the 2nd drive that I have in the HDD caddy. When I boot with the 320GB drive in Ubuntu I can see the 120GB drive (it works perfect) but it doesn't boot. Thanks for your help.

brand new t530, ordered with two hard drives. lenovo caddy in ultrabay. it seemsthat ultrabay hard drive is going off to sleep mode after a period of inactivity. is therea was to disable powering down of the hard drive  in ultrabay because this is notacceptable. any ideas? much appreciated. edit: i am not using a dvd drive nor will i be switching between dvd drivein ultrabay and caddy with hard drive. caddy with hdd will always be inultrabay and i'd like to have access to it at all times. also, i  don't have lenovopower manager installed. there's just power management in control panel ofwindows 8 and i have turned all power savings off. although, in windows 8 (afaik)there is no setting for ultrabay or anything similar. also, all hard drive power offsettings are disabled meaning they are set to 99999 minutes.

HiI was hoping someone on the forums could give me some advice.I'm after an External USB 2.0, 3.5" Hard Drive caddy. The ebuyer device looks OK, but I'd like alternatives to compare. So if anyone knows other retailers selling them please could you drop a post here. Also interested in any caddys that have pass through USB ports as well. Thanks

Hi,Can anyone advise me if it is possible to format a new unformatted hard drive in an external USB2 caddy. Some years ago when I tried this I finished up removing a drive from my PC and plugging in the new one. After formatting, the new drive was recognised and worked OK in the USB2 caddy.I would like to avoid the hassle of dismantling my PC if possible and would therefore welcome any comments.Thank you.

Answer:Can I Format a New Hard Drive Via a USB2 Caddy?

I too used to use the substitution routine to format a new HD, but more recently have had a hard time doing this with large HDs. In the end have reverted to the old method only so that I could use the manufacturer's own software downloaded onto a floppy. That does all the patitoning and formatting in a very short time.Only snag is that such floppys tend to be very keen on supporting only their own brand, and might not work if your primary drive is not of that family.

This enclosure is square, the internal board has 4 screw holes (screws supplied with kit) and a black block connector attached for the gold IDE pins to insert into.

I need to get a caddy for my Satellite L350 hard drive to try and save files on there. Not sure what one to get is it a ide or SATA.
Any help would be much appreciated. I really need to try and save my daughter?s wedding pics.

Thanks

Answer:Need HDD caddy for hard drive from my Satellite L350

What you need is 2,5? SATA HDD caddy. You can buy it in every PC store or order by eBay.

Few months ago I bought one from eBay for incredible 5 euros only.

If you cannot find it let me know and I will post you the link where you can order one.
