Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

Question: Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

Hi I have a brand new E520 and I love it. But there's a quite annoying problem with the screen: it tends to change brightness (it gets brighter or darker in 3 or 4 steps). Could anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

My E520, which I bought about 2 weeks ago, also has a problem nearly like you. When screen returns after turning off for energy saver, its contrast becomes extremely high. I have to wait for a few minutes for it to turn back to normal. Besides, one more symptom is that if I use the buttons for decrease brightness, the lowest level is 2, not 1. I found that it's the Thinkpad Video Features ( Intel Hurom River GT1/GT2) for Windows 7 64 bit. I restored my laptop to before the time I install it, and everything's ok. By the way, it seems that Lenovo usually has problems about driver, isn't it?

I understand your frustration, have you checked to see if your BIOS is up-to-date?

There is a BIOS update that came out in Nov 2012, it includes a fix for the issue of brightness keys (F7 & F8).

Please let me know how this goes and if you have any questions.

Hey there guys, I've been having a stack load of trouble with this laptop. I loved it when it was working but the last few months have been incredibly frustrating. It started with the yellow DC in plug slowly breaking, it then wouldn't accept the charger and I couldn't use the laptop. I was busy at the time so sent it away to be repaired, the repair company called me and asked if I also wanted the screen replaced. I was pretty shocked as it was fine before I sent it and I packaged it really really well. I contacted the courier company and they said they'd need to inspect it to see if I can make a claim or not, so I paid the $50 "inspection fee" from the repair company and it was then picked up. I got a call a few days later saying the courier company wouldn't accept fault as they think it was already broken. Which is complete BS. I KNOW it wasn't broken. So they send it back to me. I now am $50 + postage down and have a laptop which needs even more repairs. Fast forward to this week, I end up purchasing a new DC in card and putting that in myself. Put it all back together and everything looks good. Plug in the charger, push power, everything is going good. I can hear the fans spin up, the hard drive spins up, I'm feeling pretty excited (screen is still broken, I wanted to see if it powered up fine before spending money on replacing that). There is nothing at all showing up on the screen, not even back light. I think it may just be the screen so plug in the HDMI... Read more

After using my Lenovo Thinkpad E520 laptop for three, four months, I encountered serious screen problems, not caused by my own use. I protect my laptop, with a special Caselogic Laptopbag + a laptop sleeve + a screen protector from crumpler. I think something is wrong with the building quality of mine laptop because I see a serious scratch and strange spots on my screen. Enclosed photo's give more details: The shop where i've bought this laptop send me trough to Lenovo Service. I had really no clue where to find a email-adress so I post it here. Further information: Simultaneously with the purshase of the laptop I've bought a warranty-upgrade: 'LENOVO Warranty 2 year On-site Repair (78Y9363)'.  The photo's can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?xuy5e1ojv4osp4x Further help is urgently needed. It seems at the time a couple of weeks ago after Google changed their logo  with the paintbrush, my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 LCD screen started showing some small green lines in the middle upper part of the screen.  They seem to be spreading a little and are now about one half inch by one half inch.   When it boots up and the Microsoft logo comes on and most of the screen is black, I don't see the green lines.  I can see the cursur continually when I move it across the green lines.    Do I need a new screen?   Any other suggestions?   Thank you.

I have replaced the screen on a Thinkpad Edge E520 but the new screen is very dim. You can see the ThinkPad logo if look closely at screen when boot up but appears to have no backlight. I had a laptop once that the inverter was faulty and did the same but can't seem to find any reference to one for the E520. Any ideas as to what the problem might be?

I bought 2 of these in oct 2011 for my twins going to college. My daughters has had no problems.the other one died in may 2012 and was repaired under warranty. It died again in November 2012. I was able to get it running by removing the battery and disconnecting the cmos battery and letting it sit for a while. It happened again, and this time I can't revive it. I want to add that I think there was something wrong when we got it back from repair. The battery icon for the Lenovo power management did not work, but the windows one did. In hindsight I think this had something to do with nvram problem I have since heard so much about.   I just got off the phone with technical support and I was told I there is nothing they can do for me, other than fix it for 550 bucks.I am so mad I am still shaking.   -Scott

Hi guys. I bought a Thinkpad Edge E520 a while ago. It's a great piece of kit but I feel it's let down by the screen. The viewing angles are very bad as is the contrast. Is it possible to swap out the screen for a more high end one? I don't want to use an external monitor, oh and the screen is matte which is fine...it's just the atrocious viewing angles and sub par contrast.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520 Screen Viewing Angle

You may or may not be able to shim in the 15.6" 1920x1080 panel from the T520/W520.Of course, it'd void your warranty. There are some color calibration tricks you can use so they'll appear to shift less as the viewer moves off angle. (Crushing the lighter colors may work, at a loss of contrast.)

Hi there! I, and many other e520 users too, have a problem with a pulsing fan, meaning that every 45 seconds or so the fan spins up for a second. As far as I know, it has something to do with the firmware of the Embedded Controller. I read that other thinkpad generations had this problem too and  it was fixed by a bios update (updated firmware of the EC). Any chance to receive a bios update solving this problem in the near future? The spinning up is very annoying. Thank you in advance. Tom This is what I am talking about:Acceleration (pulsing) problem:The pulsing is triggered by the embedded controller when it monitors the fan speed and adjusts the fan control accordingly every few seconds. For some models, IBM released an update to the embedded controller program that seems to at least partially solve this problem.

I bought this laptop on Aug 29th (or close to that) and after using it for about 3 weeks there's a problem with the resolution i suppose? It happens randomly but it usually happens when i turn on the computer with the battery in. I made a mistake before by taking the battery out when the computer was asleep, and that's when it started to have this problem. My brother thought that i probably messed up the driver so he reinstalled it. It was fine right after he reinstalled it, but then the problem happened again soon afterwards. I don't know why but the original resolution setting was 1440 x 900 (and it's recommended?) When I changed it to 1366x768, it showed even less of what it's supposed to show. This is a picture of my screen right now. You can see a little of the circle on the top left corner of the screen. It's supposed to be a full circle. You can also see that the recommended resolution is 1440x900.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6057/6261682394_a1e75e8df1_z.jpg This picture is also more obvious that you can't see the "shadow" of the word THINK.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/6261682108_022a201be8_z.jpg

So I got my new laptop and for some reason the graphics card doesnt work correctly. Whenever I try to play starcraft2 on medium (which even the intel chp is capable of doing) it looks like this when using the radeon: http://img217.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2011050510363.jpg/I emailed AMD about this and they told me its probably a drivers issue but their CCC doesnt support the switchable graphics notebooks and I should ask lenovo for drivers. But I cant find anything but drivers for the intel chip. I also dont have a phone available right now and I cant seem to find a support email adress and this is getting pretty frustrating and makes me wonder why they use this switchable graphics thing if they cant even make it work   I tried turning the intel chip off but CCC wont recognize the radeon even when I do this, also for some reason deactivating one of the graphics cards seems to make the other one not working properly anymore either :/ I found this on the starcraft board where a guy uses the same graphics card / intel / driver and has the same issue:http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2057776037Im a bit underwelmed by the lack of email support, hopefully someone can help me out hereThanks alotDavid

Hi, I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 for about 3 years now, and i have a problem that i can't solve for about almost a year. I've been searching for help on another forum, but with no luck so i decided that i might get some help here. I have two switchable graphics card in my laptop - AMD Radeon HD 6630M and Intel Graphics 3000. The thing is, that im currently running on Intel card for that year. One day, when i ran a game, it worked good for a while, and then i got huge FPS drop. When i restarted PC, ran a game, any game, it went fine for a while and again after few minutes i got FPS drop. So i opened my laptop, looked inside, and cleaned it from dust. After i put it all together, it worked like a charm. But only for a few days. Then, while playing a game, i got BSOD. Since then, i can't install ANY AMD driver. Just can't. Whenever i try, i get BSOD during installation. I thought that a new windows install might solve the problem so when the chance appeared, i downloaded windows 10. It didn't solve the problem. I tried every option i had, i even did a clean factory install - like if i bought it, no programs, no documents, nothing. Unfortunatelly, that didn't work either. I thought that when i opened the laptop all those months ago, i might screw something up. So i opened it again today, but i never dissamblley it completely, not then, not now. And there was nothing about the graphics card i could screw up. I didn't even see it. So i'm really desprate, i tried everything, i... Read more

Till then i had the older version of System update 4.01... after I start it, the application told there is a new version and it must be installed and the program will now close and install the new version of TVSU - 4.03.0007. Well all OK..it was installed started checked and after I closed it. This evening I open it to see what it offers me among the optional updates and...crash! I uninstall it, ccleaner, restarted after install and uninstall...nothing. All stays the same. I'm using Win7 Ultimate 64-bit. Here are the complete details of the model I own.Another question if somebody got a clue on this problem. Google chrome bugging on some videos in youtube (only some). Hi! my ThinkPad shows a strange behavior... Suddenly the screen brightness was reduced by the system. Brightness is "15" but it is darker than before. I can not find any option to raise brightness!!!! I am using a Lenovo power supply unit. It is annoying to use the ThinkPad at daylight. Really exhausting looking at a screen thats too dark. Any tips? Regards, nightwatch83

Answer:Screen Brightness (ThinkPad Edge 15)

nightwatch83,

Some basic questions...

If you reboot to windows and are on AC is the screen still dim?   Does it respond at all to screen brightness increase / decrease settings?

If you restart and go into BIOS on AC, how bright is the display?  Any different than in Windows?

If the problem seems isolated in Windows, I would reload the power manager and hotkey drivers and recheck the settings in power manager for screen brightness.

Best regards,

Mark

On my Thinkpad, the brightness is to low, even if I increase it to maximum. The only thing that seems to get the brightness to work correctly is connecting the laptop to an AC adapter.  What could my issue be?

Answer:Screen Brightness to Low on High on Thinkpad T60

The maximum brightness in battery mode is less than in AC-mode to save battery power. You can  increase it in the BIOS under Config - Display - Brightness setting the value to "high" (see explanation text on the right side after selecting that item).

Hi everyone. I've a problem with mi Lenovo ThinkPad T400. The brightness is always at the minimum, and cannot be changed. Hi all, I would like to share my recent experience of Thinkpad X1 carbon (4th 2016) screen brightness problem, and how this problem been solved. The laptop cames good and the F5 and F6 function for screen brightness adjusting is OK. Other methods, like in the setting menu and battery menu,  to adjust the brightness are all OK.After one hour or one day or some short time, you will find you cannot adjust the brightness. Even the battery & power options are not working. The problem comes from the driver. First I thought it is the problem of driver of monitor (wide viewing angle high density flexview display 2560x1440 driver). I uninstall, update, change...but none of them work. Finally, I find it is the problem of intel hd graphics 520 . There is another evidence that during the time only this driver of intel hd graphics 520 has been updated automaticly to the latest version! So I uninstall and roll back to the version 20.19.15.4331 and the problem is solved.I did not check the lates version of this driver. But I am sure that the latest version of intel hd graphics 520 has conflict with the lenovo driver for screen brightness! I am sure there are other people face the same problem after the update of hd graphics 520 driver. Any engineer please check it!

I reformatted my X220i last night. I downloaded all the drivers via Lenovos website. Everything seems to work fine except a couple things; 1) This is the big one--the screen brightness buttons don't work. All of the other Fn keys work, so I'm unsure what the problem could be. Furthermore, I can't change the brightness by adjusting the power settings. it's stuck at a VERY low brightness level and I can barely see this text as I type it--super frustrating! 2) The display is showing in up in control panel as "Generic PnP Monitor"--perhaps the two issues are correlated? 3) Not a problem persay, but in WIE my graphics/gaming graphics scores a 1. I downloaded the drivers, so i have no clue why! Thanks guys. I really need to get this brightness thing figured out--any ideas/suggestions would be of great help to me.

Answer:Thinkpad X220i -- Screen Brightness buttons don't work -- Help please!

1. How did you install OS and drivers? Was it clear (fresh) installation or from the factory recovery media? Did you use Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update application for Lenovo drivers and software?2. You can download needed monitor file from the Lenovo site:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015012But this issue doesn't related the 1st one.3. It seems the chipset drivers has not been installed correctly. In which sequence did you install Lenovo drivers and OS upgrades?

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

Hi,I'm experiencing an issue with screen brightness control on my E520. Whenever I reboot  the system, the brightness turns to maximum, then when I relogin into windows the Power Manager automatically starts up and sets the brightness according to its settings. This works only if the Power Manager's option "Show Power Manager Gauge in task bar" is left ticked, because with that option disabled the Power Manager doesn't automatically adjust the brightness on startup. There are 2 problems:1) on every reboot the brightness is turned to maximum (on every other notebook I've seen the brightness level is kept).2) the Power Manager doesn't work without the green battery meter on taskbar. I want it to automatically adjust the brightness on startup but I don't want the battery meter on the taskbar. I'm on a fresh windows xp installation and I have all the updated drivers (including intel chipset, intel management engine interface, lenovo power management) installed. Has anyone a fix for this?

Answer:E520 brightness on startup

Anyone can provide some support? How can I manage to get the Power Manager working without having the powergauge in the taskbar?

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

I just changed my ThinkPad T450 laptop screen to a full-HD IPS display. The new panel (display) shows up in the Device Manager with Hardware ID MONITOR\LGD03FF. While the screen works, I can no longer adjust the brightness in Windows 10 - it's always on full brightness and the brightness key combinations no longer work (nor do any of the Windows 10 software brightness controls). The brightness adjustment keys work perfectly in Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), and they work if I go in to the BIOS. The monitor is showing up in the Device Manager as "Generic PnP Monitor". Any idea how to get brightness working in Windows 10 with the LGD03FF panel?

Answer:Brightness not adjustable on ThinkPad T450 after changing screen (to LGD03FF)

unless you have a panel with an fru number corresponding to t450, the eeid (configuration chip on the panel) won't have the correct info to allow brightness control.

Hi, I have the following issue since a couple of days (not sure it came with a recent windows/drivers upgrade): When I set the screen brightness to low, or the screen dims itself in a dark environment, it starts to flicker - there are flashes of white/blue as long as the brightness is low. Increasing the brightness gets rid of the problem. I tried disabling the panel self reflesh (PSR) which seemed to help others, but no success there. Anybody got the same issue and a possible solution? My specs: Windows 10 1709, Intel Graphics Drivers Version 21.20.16.4727 Video of the flickering:

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS. This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I can´t.

Hello, I have a Thinkpad X140E with Windows 7 (64-bit) and recently the On-Screen Display for volume and brightness keys stopped functioning (no on-screen display). I recently upgraded my W700 to a clean Win7 Pro x64 install, downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from the Lenovo website, and did a manual install of all of them. Mostly there were no problems, however the OSD for mute, volume up/down, and brightness did not work. Here is the page for the Hotkey Features Integration package, which contains the OSD program: Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bi... The problem appears to be a bug in latest version of the OSD program, for the W700. I collected data on the various versions of the OSD utility; see below (I have used the overall package version as a reference, although the OSD program itself has a different version). Here is the fix: 1) Install the latest Hotkey Features Integration package. This gets the latest other packages, plus a broken version of OSD.2) Manually uninstall the OSD program (in Control Panel:Uninstall); reboot.3) Download and install the Hotkey Features Integration package version 3.85.0000. This is last version which works fully with the W700. Run the package installer, the run the installer itself. Make sure that only the OSD component is selected; run setup; reboot. That should fix it. It appears that the bug also exists in Win XP. Here is the info I have on the various versions: 3.33.0002 - OSD Works with W7003.81.0100 - OSD Works with W7003.84.2000 - OSD Works with W7003.85.0000 - OSD Works with W700 <&l... I have a ThinkPad X240 which came with a 1366x768 TN panel, I hated it and so after a while I upgraded it to an IPS 1080p display. It works great and looks fantastic except it's stuck on max brightness inside of Windows 8.1. I cannot change the brightness inside of Intel HD graphics settings or inside of programs like Display Tuner. It doesn't work in Windows 10 either. The weird thing is, I can change the brightness just fine inside of Ubuntu. I've tried uninstalling the Intel HD drivers and reinstalling them, I've tried switching the drivers to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and none has worked. I feel like I've installed every single version of Intel's Graphics Drivers and that I've done everything and it still won't change the bloody brightness. NOTHING has worked except to just use Ubuntu, which is not an adequate solution. I've even gone as far as to update my BIOS and reset it to defaults, I've even pulled the CMOS battery. I've tried the version of the Intel HD driver from Lenovo for the X240 and I've installed the monitor.ini files. I've also just learned that during the Windows Boot Logo, the FN keys WILL change the brightness, but as soon as Windows is done booting, it stops working. This, coupled with the fact that brightness control works in Ubuntu means that this must be something related to Windows right? Brightness control works in BIOS. I've even gone so far as to try and change the brightness through CMD using powercfg accordin... HiDid you install Lenovo Power Management Driver and Hotkey Features Integration package? Also, the trouble might be caused by LCD cable for FHD screen missing. Hi ! First of all, sorry if I make some mistakes, I'm a french speaker  I own a Lenovo for some month now, and I'm completly satisfied with this computer. In Januar, the mainboard burned for a reason that I can't explain. New problems appeared directly after the reparation. Two days ago, I decided tocompletly reinstall Windows 7, after deleting all the memory of the SSD. All functions very well, apart one small thing : the brightness control (fn+Home/End) does not work well. Actually, it does like this : Increment : 0-4-7-9-10-11-12-13-14-15Decrement : 15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-6-3-0 It is not a real problem in itself, but it is quite annoying when you want to adjust the brightness confortably... Thanks !

Answer:[Thinkpad T410s] - Problem with brightness control

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Did it use to work without irregular increments before? If so, then verify whether all drivers are installed from lenovo, for instance video, Power Manager/Management, Hotkey Features etc, and not through Windows Update:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/migr-74582.html

Run TVSU alternatively:-http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73695

I have seen it mentioned by another user in L series and Value line board, my guess is that lenovo has changed something for new systems because my T400's on-screen display works fine and doesn't have this behavior.

Hope this helps.

Hi there! Just got myself a new E520. My first ThinkPad After a day of usage I'm feeling really happy about the purchase, but I still have a few questions to ask. How should I take care of the battery? Is there a some procedure on how I should wake it for usage, because it's brand new and been sitting in warehouses somewhere without being used? Should I discharge it and then leave it on AC for like 12 hours or something? The brightness control seems somewhat strange. Levels from 2 to 15 are ok, but 0 (darkest) and 1 seems like they should be somewhere at 10. When I'm on the battery I use level 3 after couple minutes of no usage, power saving kicks in and sets level to 0 (and makes the screen more bright). How can I fix that? I know I can make the power saving to change brightness level to 2 instead of 0, but I want 0 to be darker than 2. Do you know what I am sayin' ? I'm feeling about aftermarket SSD, but their prices are currently too high to get one for all the media, so I'm thinking about putting small SSD as a primary OS drive, and moving current drive to the place of dvd drive. I know that I need some kind of bay or something. Where can I find it? Am I voiding my warranty by doing that by myself? What is the connector used to connect the dvd drive? mobile SATA or regular SATA?Or can I add additional battery instead of dvd-drive? Additional mobility would be great  Does this model support docking station? The CPU that I have is i3-2310M , i... Read more

Answer:E520 - Battery, brightness control, CPU upgrade & secondary hdd

You can lengthen the life of the battery by using Power Manager to set a charging threshold of around 80-90 percent. Also avoid discharging the battery below 10%.The brightness issue is definitely not normal behavior. Can you try updating the system with System Update?I'm not sure if the E520 supports a UltraBay SATA adapter... If it supports a docking station, there'd be a connector on the bottom. The E520's CPU is socketed according to the Hardware Maintenance Manual (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60536_01.pdf) so you should be able to swap it for a higher second-gen Core CPU.You can probably find the travel adapter on Lenovo's site or on eBay or something.Microsoft offers a legal download of original Windows 7 ISO's off of DigitalRiver. The links are on the NotebookReview forums here:http://forum.notebookreview.com/windows-os-software/428068-legal-windows-7-download-links-just-like-...The battery wiggling is generally intentional to accomodate for thermal expansion and contraction, unless it's REALLY wiggling.Enjoy your new E520!

Hi Wale3D_ArshaD,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that you are facing the issue with On Screen Display on your ThinkPad Edge 15.

To resolve this issue you have to install hot key features application.
Please click here to download the application and run the setup.

Note: Make sure Display driver is installed on your system, because hot key feature application requires Display drivers to work on the brightness function keys.

Hope this helps.

Question: Thinkpad - e520

I got my first ThinkPad e520 last week. I didn't want to rush to share my experience so took a week's usage to share my experience.e520 - i5 -6GB - 500 GB - Windows 7 HomeStarting with positive feedback:- Matt finish of the laptop feels really good and doesn't feel cheap for this price- Chiclet keypad is also great to type- Performance is good overall for personal use- like usual ThinkPad - finger scan, touch pad is very good- 720p webcam is also very good- Lot of shortcut keys near num-pad like calc, lock, search and my computer are really useful- Fast windows bootup Now few points to raise your eyebrows,- First thing I noticed was a stuck pixel about an inch lower left corner from center of the screen. I was advised no replacement will be done for 1 stuck pixel and only option was to return this laptop by warranty team. I loved this laptop so much that I thought I will live with stuck pixel but after using it for a week I felt it was very annoying so will call service department tomorrow and ask them once again if they can do anything about this stuck pixel, else I am gonna return it and get a new one. Also I tried all the options which are floating in the internet to fix stuck pixel but nothing solved my problem. If the stuck pixel was at the corners you can try to ignore it but since it is right at the center of the screen you got to see it to know how annoying it would be - Lot of flux in 'F' and 'J' keys and another small issue but annoying once you starting typing... Hello! Its my first laptop with my money and i bought thinkpad Edge E520. I just bought it two weeks back . At first the system never boots, its goes to the lenovo thinkpad flash page and stays there, if you wait till it responds, it automatically moves to this ATAPI menu!  I spoke to lenovo and they said its a hard disk problem.  I went to warranty service, he ran the lenovo recovery disk and the system started to work. I used it for a while and i installed nothing new in that laptop and sudenly a couple of days back the system got stuck when i am browsing internet, it said  " WHOA! google chrome ahs crashed" and the screen goes to blue screen of death. Again when i reboot it, the same first which i faced at first < going to the ATAPI menu> occurs..any help would be good. If not i am thinking of exchanging the laptop! its sad that this is happening from the first thing i bought with my salary.

My recently purchased E520 plays sound very softly through speakers and through stereo systems. I have Ipods and basic MP3 players that play a lot louder. I've checked all of the settings through Windows 7 and there doesn't seem to be any problems. Is there a way that I can boost the sound because this is really dissapointing, i'm extremely happy with my Thinkpad apart from this one issue. Is it possible that there are sound restricitions on laptops purchased in New Zealand?

I am seeing other posts here, and elsewhere on the Internet, with the same problem.  My hardly used (maybe ten times), out of warranty (by maybe six months) ThinkPad E520 is simply dead.  No power getting to the laptop from either the battery or the AC adaptor.  I have tried, unsuccessfully, to get help from Lenovo over the phone with this issue, but the low level support personnel refuse to connect me to a manager or supervisor so that I could try to possibly get help with this known issue.  I spent almost $900 on this laptop.  Honestly, in my 46 years on this planet, I have never, ever spent money to repair an out of warranty piece of electronics.  EVER. Can anyone help me?

Suggestions?.......................by the  way, I  left the word great in prior sentence as it came out of computer as an example of  what  is printing.

I have just completed a complete erase and re-intall of Windows 7 64 on a Thinkpad Edge E520. I have updated all of the drivers to the latest version offered on the lenovo site. However, when I go through the normal shutdown procedure the laptop shuts down and then comes right back on. This is not the only E520 that I am having this issue with and this is the reason for the complete re-install of the OS. From what I have seen through some quick research this seems to be a pretty common issue with Thinkpads so I hope there is an easy fix for it. I should aslo add that I have it set to shutdown when I close the lid but it will shutdown and start back up even when I do that. The only I have been able to get to shutdown and stay that way is to hold in the power button and force it to shutdown.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

After a few months of very little use only using it once a week or less to watch a movie my laptop refuses to power on. I checked my A/C adapter with a multimeter and its showing normal 20V. I then took out the battery and connected it just to the adapter and it still wouldn't turn on nor would any of its lights flicker. I recently purchased through Lenovo the ThinkPad Edge E520. It arrived in the mail a couple days ago. Within the first 3 seconds of pressing the power button, I recieved the dreaded "Fan Error" message posted on the upper left of the screen then shut itself off. Suffice to say, I was disappointed. First ThinkPad I've ever bought, and it comes with what looks like a faulty fan assembly. I've contacted the Warranty department, and aparently the warranty upgrade I purchased is not on file, and I have to wait until the Warranty Entitlement department does the paperwork to straighten it out. I will not hear back from them until Monday or later since it takes roughly 2 business days for Entitlement to process the request, which is another disappointment. Once that's handled, *then* I can make a on-site service request, as my warranty upgrade entitles me to do. Considering the time sensitive nature of my work, I need a functioning laptop: now. So, to get to the point, while they try to figure that out, is there anything I can do on my end? It has been beyond frustrating to twiddle my thumbs as now I have no functioning machine with which to do my work.

Answer:ThinkPad E520 - "Fan Error."

Try giving it a gentle but hard bump on the back of the laptop under the ESC key with your hand. This sometimes dislodges a stuck fan on my T400 (sometimes it gets a Fan Error after a long car trip in the trunk).

Hey Guys! I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520. Im quite sure it supports Ultrabay, because I can remove one screw and pull out the DVD-drive while system is running without any problems  My question is: There are 2 different hard drive adapters available (at least here in germany), which one is the right for my model? There is one saying "the newer one" with 12.7mm and a special thing for holding the harddrive save in place:click here And the other one, named with "for older models" with 9.5mm and not this special holding-stuffclick here I don't know which one is right, but from measuring the dimensions of my DVD-Drive, I guess I need the bigger one (which would be the first)Any help? thanks

Answer:Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

The PSREF says that the DVD drive is not removeable:

"DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable, tray-in
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,
removable, upgradable"

My Thinkpad Edge E520 (1143-CTO) fell off the arm of the Lazyboy and the LCD spider cracked. Bright white on half and crazy stuff on the other.Ordered replacement LCD LP156WH4 (TL) (B1) and put it in.Now there is no back light. Everything looks good if i boot it up and hold a bright light to it.My question is is there anything a novice can check or replace that might be the problem, or do i need to send it in?When i plug in the old LCD it is dark now too.Lenovo wants minimum $179-570 to fix it. Thanks for any insight.Jeff

I left my E520 with the LCD display closed and a cell phone plugged into the USB, and a video display plugged into the HDMI, overnight.  When I got up I could hear the fan constantly running, cool air coming from it. I open the LCD display and logged into it and all was well but the fan continued to constantly run.  I rebooted the laptop and now I get "FAN ERROR" with 2 beeps and it shuts down. I have unplugged it and removed and reinstalled the battery, but get the same error. Did it overheat and fry something in the thermal sensor overnight? The fan obviously is working.

Answer:ThinkPad E520 "FAN ERROR" but fan is running

Just a defective main bord/thermal sensor.Send it in for repair.

is your adapter a 34 mm expresscard? if it is then it should work, as long as it supports the operating system that you have.

I have a ThinkPad E520 that will sleep/shut off/ screen blinking constanly. Even in the BIOS. I've replaced the motherboard and that fixed it for a time but the problem came back. After that I replaced the CPU and the problem went away for a day or two then came back again. I've tried different RAM and CMOS battery. I'm completely out of ideas. Has anyone else run into this before?

a friend gave me a thinkpad e520 (intel i3 chip) to check out . it's completely dead . no power light . no bios error beeps . nothing .what could it be ? the battery is charged . i had it plugged in . no signs of life at all . she said someone told her it's the motherboard but i think it the power board . how can i find out ? helppppp . lol .

Answer:lenovo thinkpad e520 dead ?

It very likely may be the motherboard.Do you know any other history behind the failure as to when the last time it ran correctly and then what happened between then and the time that it died?( such as .... drink spilled in laptop, it took a dive down a flight of stairs, it was left turned on and put into a backpack or computer bag and overheated to death in the confined space, bad storm came thru and ever since it wont boot, child ran thru room and clotheslined the power cable to laptop and laptop dropped off coffee table to hardwood floor ..... ect ) * All these of which I have seen kill laptops.Information as to how it may have died can point us in a direction...

Really need help with my brand new E520 screen display setting. Many thanks. Just got this online ordered laptop yesterday. Type 1143CTOAfter first start, 15.6' wide screen couldn't display the whole desktop.Check 'display', only one option 'digital flat panel 1024x768'. hrrrr...a 1024x768 display on a wide screen monitor.Guess all the same type of E520, shouldn't it '1366x768' for a display? Have to make a resolution '800x600' to get whole desktop with taskbar, then there is another problem showed up, the desktop is not in central either, more close to botton right.

Answer:ThinkPad E520 Display issue

install lenovo vantage tool and let it download all drivers. Then you can set res to 1366x768 as well as use fingerprint, camera, bluetooth, hdd protection,, wifi  and the AMD graphics.

It doesn't even show the light when I plug in the power cord, and the cord works fine on another thinkpad. I've tried taking out the battery and alterating holding down the power button for a second 10 times then holding it down for thirty seconds and starting it up with and without the battery, plugged in and not. This is the second time this has happened to me with . The first time they replaced the motherboard and palm rest. I thought it was an isolated thing and the service was great when it was under waranty so I continued to recomend thinkpad computers.  My previous thinkpad is still working 8 years after I bought it. Now my warranty has expired, the exact same problem has struck again, and I'm reading all over that I'm basically SOL.  I've barely owned this computer for 1 year.  If this means the computer is shot, it works out to me having paid 43 bucks a month for it. Is there anyone I can try to contact at lenovo or should I just move onto a new brand and start warning others of thinkpad's sharp decline in reliability?

Answer:Thinkpad E520 won't charge or power on

Yes, same exactly, just out of warrantly by less than 30 days and Lenovo told me to kick sand!  Very unhappy!!

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Edge e520 laptop that I purchased les then 3 months ago, and this morning when I woke up it will not start upa anymore What it does is I push the button, the light comes on, you can hear the fan starting, it boots the DVD-ROM and then the HDD and then it powers off. THen it starts automatically again and so on. I have not done ANYTHING to the laptop to cause this, it just happened out of the blue. And it doesn't matter if I try to start it on battery, AC adapter or both. Can anyone help?

Answer:ThinkPad e520 no longer booting..

1/ Download an Ubuntu-iso: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download2/ Burn it onto a cd. Make sure you burn it as an image, not as data! You can use ImgBurn to burn images.3/ Make sure your optical drive is set as primary boot device in bios.4/ Try booting with the Ubuntu-cd. If that works, then the problem probably lies with your hard drive.

Hi, looking for some help here.So my computer was running slow, and for various reasons I decided I needed to wipe it clean. I've gone through the system restore procedure but now I've turned it on and I have BASIC functionality, I can't get anywhere past that. It says in the system properties that Windows IS installed though. I tried to install Intel's wireless driver (Windows told me no network adapter could be found) yet the installation cannot be completed because apparently I already have the old Intel driver installed. When trying to delete the old programme I get a message saying that this cannot be completed.  Unfortunately I do not possess the original disc which came with the laptop. Do I need to buy a new Windows 7 disc and install from there? Or do I need to download drivers etc. online and install via a usb stick? And if so which? Please help Thanks to anyone with any useful advice in advance

Hi, I just orders a Micron RealSSD C400 SSD 128GB for my E520.I was starting to think how to move my Windows 7 64 OS and data from the current C drive on the hard-disk to the new SSD drive. At first I thought just to use a copy C partition (using Easeus Partition Maste) to the SSD and than change drive letters, but then, I rememberd that Lenovo installs a SYSTEM_DRV partition  size ~1GB with drive letter * that can't be copied. Will it be a problem the leave the current *YSTEM_DRV on the hard disk and just copy C: drive to the SSD ? or should the SYSTEM_DRV partition reside on the same drive a C: partition. Will it slow down startup process ?

Hi,
I would like to buy my son some ram for christmas.  He is limping along on 4gb with i5 2540 running 64bit windows 7.  I had initially planned to buy an extra 4 gb to match what was in the machine.  I am now thinking that it might be better to replace the 1x 4gb and go to 2 x 8gb.  I have read that some people have gone to this set up.  However, I thought that the upgrade level was only 2 x 4gb.  Can anyone help me and give me some advice on what ram to buy and any successful upgrades that you have done to this unit.
With Thanks,
Kaz

You can use up to 2x8GB DDR3 204-pin SODIMM. You can get 1066 or 1333MHz speeds. 1600MHz and higher chips may or may not run at full speed (they should still work though).

Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

My wife's Edge E520 has the "won't turn on problem". Before I return it to the service centre I would like to back-up the hard disk. What is the best way. I have an Edge 15.Can I just move the Hard Drive across to the 15 and run back-up? Or would I be better to get an external disk case for a 2.5 SATA drive and put the disk in that and back it up from there. Any advice would be appreciated. I am always wary after one service centre wiped my daughters disk for a keyboard change!

Answer:Back-up Thinkpad Edge E520 which will not turn on.

Either way will be okay. But using the external drive option will be the preferred option, as you wont have the driver reinstallation problem.

I have four Thinkpad Edge E520 laptops that don't indicate power from the powr supply or power on at all. I tried using the battery from a machine that does work and testing the power supplies on other machines that work, but none of the four problem children power up at all. I've removed all of the perihperals but no power or boot up. Also removed the battery with only external power and then tried to boot. Tried only with the battery and no boot. I checked the power supplies with a volt meter and they are a steady 20.33VDC. The charge indicator light on the side near the charging jack does not light up at all. Is it a fault of the charging board or the motherboard? Anyone know of have the same problem that has been fixed? Thanks.
