edge e520 vs edge 15 - music production and display quality?

Question: edge e520 vs edge 15 - music production and display quality?

hi folks, i am trying to decide between an edge e520 and an edge 15, i5, 15.6" screen. main use is for music production (cubase) but also some tv and movie watching. both the ones i am looking at have the anti-glare screen. - has anyone here got any experience of either model with music production? - is it exactly the same display on both models or is one better than the other (for movies etc)? i've read a few negative reports about the display quality. thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I own a ThinkPad Edge E520 (1143ADU) with a scratched display. I would like to replace it, but am also looking for options. I could order the same part from Lenovo, but I find the screen (15.6", WXGA HD) that came with the computer less than satisfactory at reproducing colours (photo editing). Are there quality third-party options, or can I use a better display from another ThinkPad (I can't find any compatibility info)? I am looking at improving sharpness and colour replication first, and not necessarily at increasing pixel resolution.

Hi, I have a question about ways how to power off display on Thinkpad Edge E520 (probably Edge in general). I know it can be power off by right clicking on Power manager and select power off display, but I am quite dissatisfied with this solution. Before Thinkpad I had laptop Lenovo from Idea series and I would appreciate if I could have the same option with Thinkpad to power off display by button...Is there any solution for Edge series for that ?  Thanks, Peter

Hi Brand new E320 (2 weeks old), fan runs continoulsy from boot up with him pitched whining noise which gets worse if I put any pressure on the palm rest.  Have tried putting the machine on soft mats - makes it a bit better, but it's still bad. I don't think the TPFanControl utility will work with this machine. Is there a solution, or do I have to start wearing earplugs when using my new laptop? On another issue: display image quality is not good - quite washed out, not the amount of contrast I am used to from a Thinkpad (this is my 5th one - reminds me of teh passive LCD display I had on a laptop 10 years ago).  Have updated video driver, doesn'y seem to make a difference.  Also adjusting teh brightness doesn't help much either. What to do? ThanksPaul

Answer:Edge E320 fan noise driving me crazy! / Poor display quality

TPFcontrol is working on mine, needs a bit tweaking, but the fan is much better now. For the display, ditch the powermanager and try installing the latest driver from intel. I've just installed this one:GFX_Vista_Win7_64_8.15.10.2509_PV.exe And the brightness is hurting my eyes now.

I tried upping from recommended 250% to 350% for use of a genealogy program made that program larger but nothing else and if I use pinch to spread out and enlarge then screen impossible to work on because it just jumps from side to side I set everything back and restated and still the same display smaller than before.  I have Nvided GEForce 960M video card and right now laptop is useless.

Answer:Display on XPS Infiniti edge to edge now so small cannot read anything

I didn't even realize you could go that high.  When I tried 250%, some things became so large that it became impossible to click important buttons since there wasn't enough display area to present them.  It sounds like your genealogy program isn't scaling-aware.  Also note that in some cases, after changing the scaling setting, you need to log off and back onto Windows for the change to fully take effect.
Also, what version of Windows are you running?  The display scaling functionality has changed significantly with each release of Windows from Win7 on, including within the various releases of Windows 10.

Question: Edge E520

Would anyone be able to help me with Edge E520 laptop screen. The colour resolution of the screen is not bright compared to other brands, I had turned to brightness to maximum but the screen is still so dim compared to my friends' laptop, Acer or HP. Spoke with the Lenovo Support and they cannot assist me as they seems to have no idea how to assist customers. Anyone who can assist me would be much aprreicated.

Answer:Edge E520

Is it miscalibrated? Try calibrating it with the Windows 7 color calibrator.

Windows 7 I am on a Gateway Intel 400 2 gb Ram 1 Tb harddrive using my large screen TV Mitsibuish as my monitor. Since installing Windows 7 my display has been edge to edge on my TV display. Recently after downloading a startup utility called starstartup my display changed with a two inch border on all sides. I have since deleted the startup utility but the border remain. I restored my computer to an earlier restore point nothing changed. So I think there must be another reason for this change in the display. On another hard drive with Windows XP which was also displaying edge to edge display but after I installed windows 8 beta the same thing occurred there was a border instead of the edge to edge display. I attempted to change the resolution which was on 1920 X 1080 to a lesser resolution but that didn't correct the display. So the resolution is back to 1920 X 1080. I clicked on full screen mode stay the same. Would like to get back to the edge to edge display. Hope you can help. Xandr

Question: E520 Edge is dead

My Thinkpad Edge E520 will not power on.  The LED does not illuminate when the PSU is connected.  It's been returned once already when it was 4 months old due to the LCD being faulty. Prior to complete failure, the system would just switch off randomly - it did this for two days. It is out of warranty by a couple of months. I've replaced the DC-IN sub-board, which I originally believed to be the problem, but it is still dead.  Lenovo charged me a disgusting £18 postage for the part.  But as the only other place it was available was dodgy Chinese eBay sellers, I didn't believe there was an awful lot of choice. I've just read on the forums (source) that the fault is common among Edge models, and most likely down to a faulty EEPROM, meaning the entire mainboard needs replaced. I have made futile attempts to email Lenovo support for advice about this, or even to acquire a part number and cost, but it seems like they just don't want me to contact them.  I cannot find an email address anywhere. Is there anything I can do to get this fixed that *won't* cost me a fortune on top of the £45 I've just paid for a part I probably didn't need, or shall I just shove it in the bin and buy another brand?  Completely fed up with it!!

Answer:E520 Edge is dead

Well, for some bizarre reason, I do like my Lenovo. And I cannot do without a laptop (I run a software company) so I've just bought a new G580. It's not top spec but it's plenty for what I need it to do (provided it actually switches on) I'd like to get the E520 fixed up but if not, I'll sell it on for spares.

I bought this Notebook 2 weeks ago, and I have still waranty for almost a year. Furthermore the energy manager tells me that everything is fine with my battery, What can I do now?

Answer:Lenovo Edge E520

Go into Power Manager. Go to the Battery tab.In the list, find "Designed capacity" and "Full charge capacity" and post them here.If they are significantly different, then it's possible one or more of the cells in the pack had/has a defect and is not holding a charge.

Question: Thinkpad Edge E520

After a few months of very little use only using it once a week or less to watch a movie my laptop refuses to power on. I checked my A/C adapter with a multimeter and its showing normal 20V. I then took out the battery and connected it just to the adapter and it still wouldn't turn on nor would any of its lights flicker. I also tried to disconnect the battery and adapter and hold down the power button for 5 whole minutes but still nothing. What should I do? I checked and its still under warranty.

Hi, Yesterday I turned off my Notebook (also, no any problems). Today will not turn on!!!!. I tried this steps too: 1- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the battery back in and pushed the power button, but not turn on. 2- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the AC adapter (without battery) and push the power button, but not turn on. If AC power adapter is connected, Power-status indicators is off.  Note: I did not update Bios and etc., I have not external devices. I installed just Windows Server 2008 R2 and worked fine. I want to know what happened!!!! ThanksRegards

Answer:Edge E520 will not turn on

A number of us have had similar issues, at least with E420s.  The fix to this is to send it to a service center and they will replace the motherboard if the system is still under warranty. I'm on my second fix to this in 4 months!

This problem appears to be pretty pervasive, and I believe there is a design issue with the Edge series.

Laptop was sitting plugged in for 3 months (no power surges).  I opened the screen today and it appeared to be in sleep mode with the red Thinkpad light slowly pulsing.  I also noticed a clicking noice in the machine with each flash of the red light.  When I pressed the power button, the machine would not power up.  After eventually holding it down, the pulsing red light went away altogether.  Power cord and battery have been checked and are good.  Power source is good.  Performed static electricity removal multiple times and machine will still not power up.  It seems like it is a motherboard problem noted on this board multiple times.  But, I am intrigued by the pulsing red light initially observed.  Any thoughts?  BTW  - I am not a "computer guy", so keep the lingo to a 5th grade level!  Thanks in advance for any help.

Question: Thinkpad Edge e520

Just got Thinkpad  Edge e520, replacing my  trusty and  reliable 3000 n100 that  is  actually  still working.  This machine, upgrade that  it is, is not very  impressive.  The  hypersensitive keyboard is driving me  nuts with  all  the multiple,  repetitive  letters it's producing, forcing me to correct  almost all words,  including those I''m typing now.........otherwise  it  would be  unreadable.  Hopefully adjustments can be made, or back it goes.  Hello Apple!     Other problems right out of  box, most of  which I've taken care  of, with  some assist by Lenovo Tech support.  However, still  can't get  Simple Tap to  function fully or consistently  after uninstall/install  couple times,  better but not right.  I've never gotten the finger tap part to work at  all, though I can click OK.   My old 3000 had much  better  feel to it,  and at least to  me,  a ggrreeatt feeling trackpad  compared to this. Suggestions?.......................by the  way, I  left the word great in prior sentence as it came out of computer as an example of  what  is printing.

Have had this E520 for a few days and I'm disappointed overall. I can't duplicate it, but often when I am using the touchpad it will not respond to my finger movement. The 'solution' is to lift my finger and put it back down again. It's annoying. I disabled the trackpoint and that did seem to help things, but I want the trackpoint so I can use the buttons.  Does anyone know why this is happening? I've owned a thinkpad t41 for many years and have never experienced this behavior, nor has it occurred with any other laptop I've owned. The two finger scroll doesn't work very consistently either.

Answer:Edge E520 - Touchpad balky

You'll find that the touchpad is temporarily inoperable immediately after a keypress or TrackPoint action (includes TrackPoint buttons).Go into UltraNav, turn down the PalmCheck. For two finger scrolling, go into UltraNav and disable the Smart Check filtering settings. If this still doesn't cut it, disable two finger scrolling for UltraNav and use the TwoFingerScroll utillity found here: http://code.google.com/p/two-finger-scroll/

Will this adapter work for my Mic and headset that has a mic jack and audio jack that needs to be combined into one? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-5mm-Jack-Plug-Audio-Cable-Headphone-Splitter-Aux-/220924282721?pt=AU_El... I'm just unsure if that adapter would accept the microphone jack and transmit. I don't want to pay anything more then $5 on a simple adapter.

Answer:Mic + Audio Splitter for Edge E520

Nope, that adapter won't work. It has to do with the wiring, look at this thread:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T510-combo-mic-audio-port-usage/td-p/217613... You'd have to use something like this:http://www.everbatim.net/store/index.php/headphone-microphone-jack-splitter.htmlRather expensive, unfortunately. If anyone knows of a cheaper alternative, I would also be interested

Hey Guys! I recently bought the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E520. Im quite sure it supports Ultrabay, because I can remove one screw and pull out the DVD-drive while system is running without any problems  My question is: There are 2 different hard drive adapters available (at least here in germany), which one is the right for my model? There is one saying "the newer one" with 12.7mm and a special thing for holding the harddrive save in place:click here And the other one, named with "for older models" with 9.5mm and not this special holding-stuffclick here I don't know which one is right, but from measuring the dimensions of my DVD-Drive, I guess I need the bigger one (which would be the first)Any help? thanks

Answer:Which Ultrabay for Thinkpad Edge E520

The PSREF says that the DVD drive is not removeable:

"DVD burner, 12.7mm high, fixed, not removable, tray-in
Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm or 9.5mm high,
removable, upgradable"

Hi, I just got a new E520 1143-AEU and messed it up trying to dual boot.I have a few questions and hope you guys/gals can help me out.It came with Win7 Pro on 500 gig hdd and I tried to install XP Pro SP3 as second boot option. Here is what I have done.I shrunk main Win7 OS partition and created a 102 gig partition for the XP install. After reading tips online I switched UCHI(?) to compatability and downloaded easybcd 2.1 to correct MBR. I installed Win XP Pro SP3 disc and did full install on 102g partition with no problems. Did full updates from windows but nothing from Lenovo yet. I went thru easybcd procedure to correct bootloader sequence but really can't remember if I actually clicked the "Write MBR" button (I had a 7mo old in background and I am just not as focused as I used to be...).Anyways something went wrong, I did not see bootloader screen or XP option, it tried to go into Win7 but got BSOD in second. Went more online, read some tips and tricks, did some cmd line edits or something and got XP back but no Win7. I tried to restore Win7 with system image and restore and through Lenovo Recovery and boot discs but none of them worked. Always BSOD in seconds once it cycles through.Through all of this I made sure not to mess with Recovery Partition, but can't seem to get any access to this to Factory Restore the system. Lenovo was great when I called, shipped out 3 discs right away.I ended up formatting both os partitions and installing XP first then Win7 and correct... Read more

Since You have pre loaded Win 7 and have installed Xp over it , To get both XP and Windows 7 as an option at the boot screen you can use the free utility EasyBCD 1.72

Hope This Helps

Hello all new to the forum and have a question about this computer - the thinkpad edge E520 I want to use it for digital editing and need to input video via firewire I know the E520 does not have a firewire - but I have an expresscard - to 6 pin firewire - adaptor - will this work? Any help gratefully appreciated

Answer:lenovo thinkpad edge E520

is your adapter a 34 mm expresscard? if it is then it should work, as long as it supports the operating system that you have.

I just bought a brand new edge e520 with ehanced experiece 2.0 which is supposed to boot very fast, but is in fact very slow and takes longer than friends much lower spec computers. it takes about 3 minutes to boot fully.Does anyone know ways of speeding this boot up?I am a little dissapointed in claims of speed when it clearly isn't so

Answer:Very slow start up edge e520

See Mark_Lenovo's posting:  http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-Knowledge-Base/ThinkPad-Edge-E420-slow-bootup/ta-p/553403 .  The tips in that posting probably also apply to the E520 Edge.

Hello . I'm looking to upgrade RAM in my laptop and I'm not sure what to go for. My laptop is an i3 with 2Gb RAM & 320GbHD running Windows 7 Home P and I only want to add 1 additional Chip. So my question is this, Will my  installed 2GB RAM allow to put in just an additional 2Gb or will it allow me to put in a 4Gb chip giving my laptop a total of 6Gb of RAM?

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E520 RAM Upgrade

You should be able to use a 4GB chip for 2+4=6GB with no problems.

Hello, I purchased the Lenovo Edge E520 about a year ago and was just curious to know if there is a spare SSD slot in this laptop for where I can place a SSD in? I was hoping to be able to have the HDD and the SSD: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=19790 Cheers.

Answer:Lenovo Edge E520 SSD Slot?

there is a spare mSATA slot not a spare full size 2.5 inch SSD slot. the mSATA slot is the spare mPCIe slot that the mSATA normally resides in.You need to remove your normal hdd to fit the full size SSD into your system.

Hi, My Edge E520 with msata ssd sometimes boot slow(40-50 sec.), sometimes fast (15-20 sec.).Problem is when logo of windows 7 dissapear, the black display is show and nothing happend around 15-20 sec. In Event Viewer i have warning event id 100, and when boot slowly the BootSmssInitTime is high, around 25-26 sec. I have read that the problem may be caused by drivers on camera and card reader, try to uninstall them but the problem remains. Any ideas?

Answer:Edge E520 slow boot

hi stanchev,

Thanks for posting. I'm assuming that you have the Win7 preload that came with your machine. Usually the preload does come with some extra software from lenovo. You might want to consider disabling the Lenovo Airbag Protection or uninstalling the Mcafee Antivirus as this has been know to conflict with boot time within some machine.

Hope this helps.

Hi everyone;Like an idiot  spilled liquid over my E520 keyboard and the laptop stopped working.Dried everything out - still not working.Bought a new keyboard. The original FRU was FRU 04W0901, but I was supplied a FRU 04W0865. I was told it was fully compatible (the manual seems to confirm this as both FRUs are listed). With the new keyboard installed, about half of the keyboard doesn't work. Plugged in an external USB keyboard and everything works fine. The question is could it be possible that a keyboard connector/interface on the laptopn was damaged by the liquid spill causing these problems? Thanks in advance

Answer:EDGE E520 KEYBOARD PROBLEM

It is certainly possible that it is motherboard damage, but it is also possible that the new keyboard you bought is defective. Also, if the ribbon cable is not installed perfectly straight, it can cause your symptoms.

Everything looks good if i boot it up and hold a bright light to it.My question is is there anything a novice can check or replace that might be the problem, or do i need to send it in?When i plug in the old LCD it is dark now too.Lenovo wants minimum $179-570 to fix it. Thanks for any insight.Jeff

I have four Thinkpad Edge E520 laptops that don't indicate power from the powr supply or power on at all. I tried using the battery from a machine that does work and testing the power supplies on other machines that work, but none of the four problem children power up at all. I've removed all of the perihperals but no power or boot up. Also removed the battery with only external power and then tried to boot. Tried only with the battery and no boot. I checked the power supplies with a volt meter and they are a steady 20.33VDC. The charge indicator light on the side near the charging jack does not light up at all. Is it a fault of the charging board or the motherboard? Anyone know of have the same problem that has been fixed? Thanks.

I'm considering buying an Edge E520 (I'm a bit less sure than I was about this purchase after reading about some very bad experiences with warranty support on this forum - I hope that those are not representative.....) Some of the available processors have support for hardware virtualization and trusted execution technology (TXT). The virtualization sounds useful to me but I'm leery of the TXT.  I see in the manual a way to turn the virtualization on and off in the bios, but, surprisingly, I have not found any mention of TXT.  Does anyone have reliable information about the status of TXT on the E520.  Is there a way for the user to enable and disable it, or is it always enabled or disabled?

Answer:thinkpad edge E520 drivers download

Hello and welcome,

I'm pretty sure those drivers are available on the Lenovo site.  The usual recommendation is to download and install the wired network driver first (using whatever machine is on the network and copying over via flash drive or CD or whatever) then directly download ThinVantage System Update, and let it pull down all the other drivers and apps.

(I'm on the US site - yours may be different) Click on the "Support" link above, then "Download Drivers and Software" then select your machine ("Quick Path" is easiest) then "Refine". That should bring up a full menu of drivers and software.  Expand "Networking" and download and install the Realtek Giga LAN driver.  You could also go directly to a wifi driver if you know what your internal wifi card is.

Once you have the network, come back to that page with your E520, expand "ThinkVantage Technology" and install System Update.  Run that and let it pull down the rest.

About a week and a half ago, my laptop got its first ever virus since owning it for 5 years. So, I wiped it using a handy dandy data destruction software.  Got everything set back up, but now...none of my video editing software will work.  I think its a driver issue - i know i am missing at least a few of them since wiping. But i do not know which ones specifically i am missing.  Is there a way i can pull up a list of all the drivers i currently have, PLUS the ones i still need? Like, my aspect ratio.  Its in proportion, somewhat.  Its just a tad bit...stretched.  I use to know how to fix that, but now, for the life of me, i can not remember how to do it. I know i need a new computer, but i dont have the funds right now to get one.  Plus, this one suits me just fine.

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I signed up for the reason being that I've been having some heat/cooling issues on my Lenovo Thinkpad E520. I don't know why this is happening, as I bought the device a few months back. It's still under standard warranty. Here are some screenshots of the computer running Prime95, then the computer running nothing (Idle). The heat issues affect the performance of the graphics card. This get very annoying, when I'm playing Battlefield 3 it runs at a smooth FPS for 5 minutes then drops the FPS down to about 1/3 for about 10-20 seconds. I know the laptops aren't meant for gaming but this wasn't a problem when I bought the laptop. But, now I had enough, I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Thats it running prime 95. You can see the temperature varies from 90-99 degrees.

Thats the computer running nothing but Windows, Speccy and CPU-Z. The temperature varies between 60-65. At idle it's ok but it still shouldn't run like this.

I am having a nightmare trying to get my laptop going again after a hdd failure.Fortunately I managed to burn the necessary disks from the recovery partition before the hard drive gave up.However with a new hdd installed and upWindows 7 back on via the recovery disks I have got a limp and useless machine. It appears that the recovery disk doesn't include all the original drivers as the display is using a bog-standard generic driver and some unknown devices show in device manager. My main issue though is Windows Update since reinstall is disabled and I have tried allsorts to get it up and running with no success. I've also tried to update the lenovo toolkit to automatically update the drivers and that will not update either - claiming it needs .Net 4 and .Net 4.5 running to do so. I have tried to install via Microsoft website but .net 4 fails during install and 4.5 wont install without 4. So I cannot update Windows 7 nor the installed Lenovo software. I have tried to manually download drivers from the lenovo site but my Internet is so slow and some of the drivers are so large (200mb+) that most downloads are stalling or timing out before they complete. Any help or ideas please - otherwise its a new laptop purchase for me and it won't be a Lenovo.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 Recovery Nightmare

Hi,

I"m surprised that your recovery media didn't install all the original drivers.  It should have AFAIK.

If your recovery media is old enough to pre-date SP1 _and_ youve installed an advanced format drive (most HDDs are these days) that could explain the windows update problem.

In that case, this KB should help: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Knowledge-Base/Windows-Update-Fails-After-Installing-New-Hard-...

Once you get win update running try again to get ThinkVantage System Update installed.  That should get your drivers updated.

Hi there!I installed Windows 8 fresh on my edge yesterday and I apparently forgot to turn the WiFi adapter on before the installation. Before I was running on Windows 7 pro. Both systems are 64 bit.despite me installing the proper drivers and all, the WiFi option is greyed out and the diagnosis tool reports the device as off.usual hotkey I used in Windows 7 refuses to work and merely toggles the airplane mode instead of letting me choose which adapter I want to turn on or off.anyone have an idea how I can turn the adapter on again without installing Windows 7? EDIT: Checked with an Ubuntu live disk and the WIFI module is disabled by a hardware switch. How do  I turn that on again? The bios says it is turned on.Cheers!

Answer:Windows 8 edge e520 WiFi greyed out

Bumping this in case someone runs into the issue...So I did a BIOS update (it doesnt show for just Windows 8 but the readme says it is for Windows 8, too) I had to run the flash utility in compatibility mode anyhow and run the lenovo part as admin...Then I restarted and it still didnt work - I reset the BIOS settings and still no change.Afterwards I tried the "meh" trick: I shut Win8 down, took the battery out and disconnected the power supply. Then I held the power button for a whooping minute. The next boot i was able to flick the WIFI switch.Just like putting a broken HDD upside down might make it work enough for a backup this stupid trick saved me an installation of Win7 on another HDD just to get the WIFI switched on.

Hallo, I consistently experience random shutdowns with my Thinkpad Edge E520. However, the shutdowns only seem to occur when it is connected to the Lenovo USB 2.0 Port-Replicator with Digital Video through which I link the notebook with a Lenovo monitor and a Lenovo keyboard. So far there have been no shutdowns when the notebook is running on its own without the port-replicator. However, I mostly use the notebook with the port replicator so that this observation may not be representative. Is it possible that using the port-replicator leads to shutdowns? Has anyone any experience with that? A different potential source of the problem may be the RAM: One RAM-card is manufactured by Samsung, the other by Kingston, the latter having been added by the PC vendor. Does Lenovo actually manufacture the RAM-cards it sells in its own shop or is it supplied with RAM-cards from another RAM-card-manufacturer like Samsung and simply labels those with Lenovo stickers so that it doesn't make a difference which one one buys? Could the recovery of the system software help? I don't see how as Windows obviously recognises both RAM-cards and the Lenovo RAM-test confirms them as fully operable. Thanks. Kind regards, Simon

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 - random shutdowns.

download Prime95 and run it without the port replicator inserted, see whether it causes any sort of shutdown. What if you link the monitor directly to the laptop HDMI or VGA?

Just got a new Edge E520 NZ33MUK , specs here: http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/Lenovo_ThinkPad_Edge_E520_1076383.html Having an AMD 6630, one of the first things I wanted to do was try out the gaming ability, so with the system pretty much factory fresh I installed Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Basically Oblivion hangs during loading for me. Specifically It hangs immediately before the tan menu screen appears. It doesn't say that it's jammed up, and if I ctr-alt-del to task manager it says 'running' i.e. fine, but the screen is just black nothing happening. So far I have tried:Checking all graphics/ audio driversAll different compatibility modesAll different graphics settingSet oblivion.exe to high performance (discreet) graphics Disabled User account controlSwitching graphics to integrated in BIOSDisabling intel graphics in Device manager Switching to 16bit colourAny ideas / Anyone in a similar situation? Thanks,Dave

I have a lenovo thinkpad e520 with an i3 2310 processor. I want to buy the i7 2720qm and put it in myself but I have noticed that the lenova website only seems to offer an upgrade of their own up to the i7 2620. I am curious as to whether or not this laptop will support the i7 2720 and whether it will be able to withstand the heat produced from it and its power consumption. I know the motherboard is a sandy bridge so it will most likely accept the cpu but what else could go wrong with installing it ( not including damaging during installation). The i7 2720 has a tdp of 45w while the 2620 has a 35w tdp. Is this a problem? Also the i7 2620 and lesser are dual cores while the 2720 is a quad. Will this cause any problems considering the surface area of the heat sink only support dual cores ? Also, will there be any issues with the battery and charger relative to the 2720's power usage as stated before? I called lenova and their tech supports dont seem to have much knowledge on it. I figured the possibility that lenova uses this e series as a less power consuming option so to include the i7 2720 might take awaay from their advertising yet it might still work if done outside of their upgrades.I guess thats about it lol and thanks!  If you also could tell me if the 2820 will work that wil be greatly appreciated as well.

Answer:CPU upgrade for Thinkpad Edge e520 1143

TLDRQuads are using sligthly different socket, max you can fit instead of i3-2310m is i7-2640m (it's new max dual core after sandy bridge refresh, previously it was i7-2620M mentioned by you) Side note: IMHO Ex20 would survive quads with equal or slightly higher TDP easily.

Hello, I got a tricky question -- how safe (by 'safe' I mean not harmful to the laptop itself) it is to hold my Edge E520 like a book? I mean, in every position, where the plane of the keyboard is not parallel to the floor. I am pretty aware, that the semiconductors are quite indifferent to the gravity, but there is also a hard drive, and a DVD-ROM and maybe other stuff I don't know about. So, is it safe? Thanks for any replies.

Answer:Edge E520 - is it safe to hold it like a book?

the hdd is okay, the cd drive on the other hand are best used in horizontal and vertical positions. If you are holding it like a book, then make sure you are holding by the back edge of the laptop (i.e. where the battery is), so you are not stressing the entire laptop structure with undue torsional stresses.

I bought this laptop on Aug 29th (or close to that) and after using it for about 3 weeks there's a problem with the resolution i suppose? It happens randomly but it usually happens when i turn on the computer with the battery in. I made a mistake before by taking the battery out when the computer was asleep, and that's when it started to have this problem. My brother thought that i probably messed up the driver so he reinstalled it. It was fine right after he reinstalled it, but then the problem happened again soon afterwards. I don't know why but the original resolution setting was 1440 x 900 (and it's recommended?) When I changed it to 1366x768, it showed even less of what it's supposed to show. This is a picture of my screen right now. You can see a little of the circle on the top left corner of the screen. It's supposed to be a full circle. You can also see that the recommended resolution is 1440x900.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6057/6261682394_a1e75e8df1_z.jpg This picture is also more obvious that you can't see the "shadow" of the word THINK.http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6224/6261682108_022a201be8_z.jpg

You can't upgrade the graphics card without changing out the entire motherboard. The Intel HD3000 graphics adapter should score way better than that, though.

Hey there guys, I've been having a stack load of trouble with this laptop. I loved it when it was working but the last few months have been incredibly frustrating. It started with the yellow DC in plug slowly breaking, it then wouldn't accept the charger and I couldn't use the laptop. I was busy at the time so sent it away to be repaired, the repair company called me and asked if I also wanted the screen replaced. I was pretty shocked as it was fine before I sent it and I packaged it really really well. I contacted the courier company and they said they'd need to inspect it to see if I can make a claim or not, so I paid the $50 "inspection fee" from the repair company and it was then picked up. I got a call a few days later saying the courier company wouldn't accept fault as they think it was already broken. Which is complete BS. I KNOW it wasn't broken. So they send it back to me. I now am $50 + postage down and have a laptop which needs even more repairs. Fast forward to this week, I end up purchasing a new DC in card and putting that in myself. Put it all back together and everything looks good. Plug in the charger, push power, everything is going good. I can hear the fans spin up, the hard drive spins up, I'm feeling pretty excited (screen is still broken, I wanted to see if it powered up fine before spending money on replacing that). There is nothing at all showing up on the screen, not even back light. I think it may just be the screen so plug in the HDMI... Read more

My wife's Edge E520 has the "won't turn on problem". Before I return it to the service centre I would like to back-up the hard disk. What is the best way. I have an Edge 15.Can I just move the Hard Drive across to the 15 and run back-up? Or would I be better to get an external disk case for a 2.5 SATA drive and put the disk in that and back it up from there. Any advice would be appreciated. I am always wary after one service centre wiped my daughters disk for a keyboard change!

Answer:Back-up Thinkpad Edge E520 which will not turn on.

Either way will be okay. But using the external drive option will be the preferred option, as you wont have the driver reinstallation problem.

Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

Answer:e520 thinkpad edge low wireless mbps

It depends on how close you are to the router and how strong the connection is. If you're far away or there's a lot of interference, the connection speed will automatically drop to ensure data integrity. You may want to see if your access point is operating in 802.11g mode.

Hello all, I recently am having trouble with Direct X 11 games with my graphics driver always crashing, I have come to the conclusion that it is out of date. I am running Version 8.951 2024.  AMD are up to Version 14! - Can a Lenovo REP please ask staff to update the drivers for us we are seriously lacking behind. I can download the drivers from  the AMD website but they're not compatible due to Switchable graphics modifications which are needed to be made, So to conclude can a Lenovo Rep just confirm and ask that AMD are on Version 14.0.0.0 and the latest on the lenovo site for a Lenovo Edge E520 is 8.951.2024. Cheers.

Answer:HD6630M DRIVERS OUT OF DATE - Edge E520

Hi Mattaust,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We understood that your query is about latest Graphic driver for ThinkPad Edge E520 system.

As per the Lenovo drivers page the latest driver for AMD Graphic Card is 8.951.0.0000, and the driver version in your system is 8.951.2024. The driver version is mismatching, I suggest you to uninstall the current driver for both the graphic, and download the driver and install it which is provided in Lenovo driver page.

Windows updated drivers will not be compatible for OEM product machine.

Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page#

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

My e520 laptop recently began freezing on me on startup. I noticed the other night when I turn on my laptop, all is fine and I wait for it to boot up..Then when I go to click on anything (folder/browser icon, etc) on the desktop, the screen and keyboard just completely freezes and I am unable to press anything or click out. This has been happening with increased regularity and the only option I have is to manually hold down on the power button and see if the next boot up will present me with the same issue. I am finding that I have to manually reboot 6, 7, 8, 9 times for this freezing issues to go away. I have scanned the laptop for any viruses, etc. and all seems fine. What can be the issue here? Any council or expertise on this subject will be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E520 freezing issues

Hi, shyguy

I would recommend doing a hardware scan on your disk drive and your RAM to see if either of them are experiencing hardware faults. This can be done using the BIOS hardware scans. To access these tests, turn on the computer and tap Enter a few times to interrupt normal startup. When the menu appears, press F10 to diagnose hardware. This should open up another program. I would run the Quick Memory Test and the Quick Storage Device Test with all options selected. After running these, please post your results and we can can go from there.

Thanks in advance,
Adam

So I got my new laptop and for some reason the graphics card doesnt work correctly. Whenever I try to play starcraft2 on medium (which even the intel chp is capable of doing) it looks like this when using the radeon: http://img217.imageshack.us/i/screenshot2011050510363.jpg/I emailed AMD about this and they told me its probably a drivers issue but their CCC doesnt support the switchable graphics notebooks and I should ask lenovo for drivers. But I cant find anything but drivers for the intel chip. I also dont have a phone available right now and I cant seem to find a support email adress and this is getting pretty frustrating and makes me wonder why they use this switchable graphics thing if they cant even make it work   I tried turning the intel chip off but CCC wont recognize the radeon even when I do this, also for some reason deactivating one of the graphics cards seems to make the other one not working properly anymore either :/ I found this on the starcraft board where a guy uses the same graphics card / intel / driver and has the same issue:http://eu.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2057776037Im a bit underwelmed by the lack of email support, hopefully someone can help me out hereThanks alotDavid

Hi, Just wondering if someone could help out/advise what to do next with my power issue. Story is;Laptop was connected to power when power surge happened. It cannot turn on at all. I have reset the power dio within the laptop with no success, whether the battery is in or not it still will not turn on. I have replaced the power adapter and have also tested that the power adapter is getting it's full 20V when testing with a meter. I have just replaced the DC-IN card on the laptop (card that power adapter directly plugs into inside laptop) and still no power. I have also tried to test the power button connection to the DC-IN card with no power there aswell. Not too sure if this only gets power if the computer is on? Anyway. I want to try to get around NOT replacing the motherboard as it is pretty expensive and I dont have any warranty on the laptop at present. Looking for answers on here before I go the long yard awaiting for answers for days or even months like before when I have rung customer service. Could someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Hello, I am running into trouble trying to access any menu option in the BIOS for my E520 to enable 64-bit virtualization (both VMware and VirtualBox) and therefore I cannot install 64-bit guests on my Windows 7 Professional host machine. The BIOS I am currently running is the one the machine was shipped with (8HET38WW 1.20 9/9/2011 - though Lenovo online documentation lists a date a couple weeks later, but whatever) and reading through the BIOS updates released since then I see no option being added that addresses enabling 64-bit virtualization to justify an update of my BIOS (which I'd rather do as a last resort as everything else runs just fine). Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to how I might enable 64-bit virtualization on my ThinkPad Edge E520? Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Cannot enable 64-bit (VTx) virtualization in BIOS of my ThinkPad Edge E520

I don't have an Edge machine, but I know for the other late model ThinkPads they put the virtualization settings in the Security area of the BIOS.
