ThinkPad Edge Video Problems

Question: ThinkPad Edge Video Problems

Whenever I'm watching a video and move the laptop, the video pauses for a second or two. This is getting very annoying - I got this laptop (the 14" i3 processor) 3 months ago, is this covered by my warranty? Also, some videos on YouTube show up all green and blurry, to the point where I can't see the video at all except a fuzzy green screen. Please help!

Preferred Solution: ThinkPad Edge Video Problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm wondering if this is just my computer or if it's something that I can talk to Lenovo about - please help as I'd really really appreciate it!

I have a new Thinkpad Edge 15 that I unfortunately have to downgrade from Windows 7 to XP. I have found all of the required drivers save one: the video controller. I have tried every ATI driver I can find on the site, plus several from ATI's own site, and nothing works. No matter what I install the device manager shows that there is no driver installed.  What am I missing?

Answer:thinkpad edge 15 XP video controller

I'm looking at the Edge 15 also to do a clean install of XP Home on. Was a compatible video controller found?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

It's not possible to upgrade the video card, there are some aftermarket solutions like ViDock but that kills the mobility of notebooks.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys,I'd be very grateful if you could help with the following Thinkpad Edge 13 issues:1. Heating. The fan is blowing hot air from the vent on the left. The bottom left of the keyboard also gets very, very hot. How can I cool it down?2. WiFi. The WiFi adapter turns off after the laptop goes to sleep. I think have to run the troubleshoot to restore it again. Very annoying problem - any ideas on a fix?3. Freezing. This might be related to the heat problem, but since I installed a new hdd, the laptop freezes for about 30 seconds before coming back to life again. It seems especially the case when watching video.4. Video. When watching video on VLC, if I jog the laptop only slightly, the video freezes or stutters. I have to keep the laptop perfectly still to avoid this. Is that normal?Any help with this would be much appreciated! Thanks kindly.

Answer:Various problems with Thinkpad Edge 13

What operating system do you use? How did you install the operating system? Did you use recovery media that you have burnt yourself, did you get system restore disks from Lenovo or did you use another method?

I'm looking at the new Thinkpad Edge 431 and have been hearing about the fan problems in the E430/530 series. Does anyone around here happen to have one of the new ones or can anyone find a review of the E431? Is the fan problem solved or is it still around? If it was, it would be quite the dealbreaker.

Hello . . . I have a Thinkpad Edge (Product ID 0578CT0), and the screen will not display anything. Also, using HDMI output doesn't work. On booting, the laptop screen will "flash" black a couple times, but doesn't display anything. It started a couple of days ago. . . on resume from sleep, the screen would delay in displaying, then you would see a whole bunch of scan lines and "rolling" vertical video, then it would be fine. The last time, however, it never came back. Ideas? Jim

I was looking into buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge. I initially preferred E530 (model# 62724GU) over the idepads (such as model P500) with better configurations for over a hundred and fifty dollars less only because it had thinkpad in its name.  However, I am seeing so many complaints (such as fan issues, battery drain) for E530, I am not sure if bought one it would not have defects. Has anyone got a defect free E530? What is the average battery drain time on both E530 and P500 on moderate to heavy load?

I have 3 thinkpads that after a fresh reload are unable to connect to wireless networks. I have gone through and installed the different wireless drivers on the lenovo support website. I have gone through several steps of similar problems others have had but it hasn't made a difference. I have installed: HotKeys & patchPower manager & driverChipsetThe realtek network -ethernet adapter and communications LAN driverI have installed and removed each wireless adapter available Thinkpad Edge 15Type: 0319-46U On a side note in the Device manager screen there is a "Network Controller" alert saying no driver installed for this device. I have determined it is some Realtek device but beyond that I am lost.

Dear Lenovo, I have started using ThinkPad Edge E440's and E540's in my company last year (June 2014) and have now been experiencing several horrible issues: 1. The default Windows 7 OS that came with the laptop gets corrupted when you install updates from Microsoft. This will hang after the initial restart and then will never boot again to windows not to mention 4 BSOD's before it gets totally corrupted, to a point that not even safe mode can boot into. if I do not update the OS from MS Updates, it will be working, but dead slow. I have 2 i7 8GB 1TB configuration and honest to goodness opinion my Core2Quad beats them hands down in performance.  2. The issue above will then have to be reformatted hence i have no recovery disks of Windows 7 so i have to use the Windows 8.1 recovery discs. which is a terrible OS and is not being used in our corporate setup. so then i have to use one of our licenses and this wastes our licenses because we originally ordered these laptops with windows 7. but then the same issue occurs with it hanging constantly and not able to connect to the wifi and BSOD's all around 3. After i have installed and updated windows 8.1, i will then update the drivers, and then will have to update the BIOS to 2.18 and then Wi-Fi will not work with the drivers that are found from your support site. you can only use WiFi again if you download the drivers from Intel or Realtek. 4. Suddenly my USB ports started disconnecting and reconnectin... Read more

I've got an E430 with 16gb ssd drive, and tried to use expresscache to speed up my computer.I used "eccmd.exe -info" to check out how it works and here is the result.Mounted : YesPartition Size : 14.91 GBReserved Size : 3.00 MBVolume Size : 14.91 GBTotal Used Size : 3.74 GBTotal Free Space : 11.17 GBUsed Data Size : 3.67 GBUsed Data Size on Disk : 3.74 GBAs you can see,now the "total used size" is 3.74GB which indicates that the cache has benn stored on the sdd drive. But every time I shut the computer down, and restart it, check the status, the "total used size"just return to about 300MB(maybe even lower), I wonder is this how it supposed to work like? Or this software  just doesn't function correctly on my computer, and if it does is malfunctioned, what I'm I supposed to do to fix it? Thank you...

Oh,and here is another thing that I noticed. A couple of days ago, I deleted the hibernation partition on my SSD drive because it takes up 8gb of storage, and seldom do I use hibernation. But I noticed that after I deleted the partition, my computer's boot up time seems to be slower than before, does that partition has some thing to do with boot up time?

I've noticed I've had this problem for a while now where when I'm charging the laptop all of a sudden the CPU useage goes sky high to 80/90% when all I'm doing is using the internet or skype (especially when using skype). I take the charger out and then everything returns to normal. This only happens sometimes when charging, not the all the time which is odd.. Anyone got any ideas?

So i recently decided to buy a second hand Lenovo E520(retarded i Know). My previous work gave me the same model so i trusted it to be reliable, however 1 month after i bought it, it suddenly did not want to turn on. I got the serial number and entered it on Lenovo's site and saw it was bought end 2011(On the posts i saw everyone that bought the e520 at that stage has problems with it). So i realized i bought it 3 months out of warrantee, took it to a lenovo dealer, they then told me it was the charging point on the motherboard that was faulty so the motherboard had to be replaced. They quoted me 4700 South African Rands(Which is about  $500 US), nice price for a motherboard since the whole pc only costs R7000 in SA (About $780 US). So i bought a working Motherboard Second hand from a guy who broke his LCD and sold the rest for parts(Exactly the same model as mine 1143-AFG) for R1000($110 US). Replaced the motherboard myself, when i was done assembling again, tried to plug it in, still no power, not charging, charging lite not showing. So anyone who can maybe help me????????? Would appreciate it!!! By the way My name is ihatelenovo after this bad experience i had with Lenovo's Reliability.

Hello, I am looking for a little bit of help. I have a Lenovo Edge 15 0319-46U laptop I recieved from my educational institution. I have had the laptop since fall of 2012. I've never had a single issue with the laptop except a month ago I noticed my wireless 1x1 b/g/n card stopped working. I'm well knoledged in computers and have already tried updating the drivers but I ran into an issue. My wireless card is no longer being shown on the Device Manager list under Network Adapters or "Unknown Devices", I only see my Wired gigabit card. I went into Bios, checked the button (did all the begginer stuff) and no dice. Wireless still does not work. I went ahead and ordered a new Intel Wireless card for said laptop and made sure the interface worked correctly, so my question is does anyone know of any fixes that could work even if the adapter is not shown on anywhere in the computer? And would anyone know if the Intel 7260-HMWNBWB Dual band card would be compatible with this machine? Thanks in advance for an answer.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 15 0319-46U wireless problems

Hello and welcome,

The ThinkPad BIOS has a wifi whitelist.  A card has to be a whitelisted model and have a Lenovo FRU number or the laptop will refuse to boot.  Generic cards - even with the correct model number - won't boot on an unmodified BIOS.

Page 113 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual  lists the compatible models and FRU numbers.

Hi  For about 3 weekI have been using and enjoying my new Edge S430. But I have some problems, questions: 1) I found out that i have a SSD caching disk, but it wasn't specified in the specs from the company where I bought it, no can I find much about it on the official Lenovo site. That's more of a pleasant surprise but looking in taskmanager I see that the disk isnt used at all! Anyone know what to do about it? 2)When starting taskmanager it sometimes takes up to 3 min(!) to start it and display info... 3)Sometimes when plugged in and sometimes when not, the S430 wont go to sleep (i did check the settings, all is normal). 4)When waking the realtech headphone driver isn't enabled and plugging in the headphones wont make the speakers go mute. 5)How do I disable the screen (make it go black?) I would be grateful if some of my issues are fixed/explained. Many thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge S430 questions/problems

are you using the preinstalled windows 7 / 8 ? 1.) i don't know windows 8, but can you see the free space of a disk in the taskmanager? anyways here is how to check if the cache is active - open start menu - search for "cmd" - rightclick run as admin - enter "eccmd -info" post results 2.) that is very weird, never heard of that 5.) maybe there is a hotkey for the S430, elsewhise you can rightclick the power manager applet (if installed) -> turn screen off immediately. otherwise there are alternative programms that can do this for you hope i could help

If i was able to help - feel free to give Kudos

Hey Community! I'm a proud ThinkPad User now, but there are some really annoying problems I have with my ThinkPad Edge E520.My Problem: If I watch an Youtube Video on Fullscreen, there's a black bar at the right side of my screen. If I'll close Fullscreen Mode, I have to press the close Button on the right side at the bottom. But I have to press it on this black bar and not on the Button itself. This Problem isn't only at Youtube. If I play "Runes of Magic" for example, there's an black bar at the right side too, even if I play in window mode or in smaller screen resolution. I allready checked and updated everything in the ThinkVantage Toolbox, but the Problem "is still alive". What can I do to solve the problem? Chris

Hello! I hope you can help me. I have some problems with my Lenovo e125 thinkpad. My BIOS version is the latest (1.17) I've set the power button to sleep, and disabled the lid closing action. The first problem is, when I push the sleep button, and then close the lid, and I open it again, the computer doesn't wake up. But sometimes yes. The another (and more annoying) problem is, somethimes when I push the power button (what has set to sleep), the notebook competely restarts. My drivers are the latest, I've installed the latest AMD e450 driver from the AMD site. I hope you can help me! Thank you!

Answer:Sleep problems with my Thinkpad Edge e125

i encountered the same issue with my e325. i think i managed to solve it by setting the power button to sleep both in windows power management AND lenovo thinkvantage power manager (found in globar power settings tab). since that setting, i don't see a restart anymore and the sleep function works just fine.please try this yourself and let me know if it works for you too.

I have upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 to Windows 10 recently and since then I have been having increasing problems to connect to WiFi. It is not a problem with the WiFi itself, since I can connect with my phone and tablet without any problems and my husband has not had any problems with his laptop either. It started with just having to try to connect a couple of times (clicking disconnect and then connect again) in the beginning. Then it took restarting the computer. And now I can't connect anymore no matter how often I try or whatever I try. Initially I got an error message regarding the IP address when using the troubleshoot, but now it just can't find the problem. I have read that it could be a problem with the WiFi driver, which may need an update for Windows 10. The driver listed is Realtek RTL8188E LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC. I have not been able to find this driver or any update for it on the Realtek website. I have not been able to find anything on the Lenovo or Windows website, or anywhere else for that matter, either. I have read posts by other users who are having similar issues, but I haven't been able to find a solution. Please let me know how I can solve this problem. Thank you.

Dear KVW,

Welcome in lenovo community,
Lenovo did not release all windows 10 drivers for the E545 laptop yet,
So you may go back to the previous windows and wait till lenovo release all the drivers.
Also you can use the below link to follow the drivers update,

I purchased 4 of these for my company in December 2011 and today have had to arrange for the 3rd one to be returned to Lenovo with the same problem.  The battery stops charging and will not hold charge and will not run unless powered into ac supply. The laptop will then not power on at all, completely dead no lights / sounds etc and when returned the previous 2 they have replaced the motherboard and have had no problems since. Even though have had this problem with 2 of the others Lenovo Technical Support have still said have to return it at my expense which because of the data included on it have had to return special delivery costing Ģ25 a time. They are returned withuin 7 days but think there may be a problem as this is a 75% failure rate. Anybody else had this problem as is putting me off buying anymore?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E520 i5 Laptops with Windows 7 - Dead Laptop with Battery Problems

Since you got the machine In December then this maybe the case, as some batch of these machines were affected by the EEPROM issues.

Streaming web sites sometimes show video along with audio, but sometimes not. There seems to be no logical pattern as to when Edge will work. Has anyone else had these problems?
My Chrome browser works just fine and will become my default browser is Edge can' be fixed,.

Have you tried disabling flash in Edge to see if your results differ?

Far as Netflix, why not just use the app instead of a browser?

Answer:I have lost my Recovery HDD with pre installed windows 7 on ThinkPad Edge 13 edge PLS Need HElp!

This is why one should burn recovery media before fiddling with the HD.

One option would be to download a legal Windows 7 ISO and install it.  Or borrow one.  You can use the product key on the bottom of your machine (or in the battery compartment) to activate the installation.  You may have to use the phone option to activate.

Working Legal Windows 7 Download Links

To do this you must install the same version of Windows that came on your machine - but it can be either 32 or 64 bit.

Your machine came with Win7 Home Basic 32.  I can't say for certain that these "all version" ISOs include that version, but you can try and see.

Once you have Windows installed, go to the Lenovo support page and enter your machine type.  That will take you to a list of drivers and apps to download.  Expand the ThinkVantage option and install ThinkVantage System Update.  You can then run it and it will download and install the other software automatically.

I'm basing this on what I see on the US pages.  Yours may be different.

Good luck,
Z.

Hello,With my previous Thinkpad X61s I was able to press Fn key and use some alpha keys as a numeric keypad but with my new Thinkpad X1 there is no such feature. I have some applications which do require the use of numeric keypad (note that the keycodes received by the OS are not the same if the normal numeric keys are used). Please, do not suggest to plug an external USB keypad or keyboard, that's, of course, a solution (which I don't like at all). Anyone has some suggestion to overcome this problem somehow? Thanks!Kind regardsBoyan

Answer:Numeric Keypad (on Fn+alpha keys) missing on Thinkpad X1 and Thinkpad Edge

As you are experiencing Fn+ alpha numeric keys are not working, I would suggest you to please update the Power Manager software and also update the Bios of your system from the below mentioned web link.

After this, please restart the system and check if the issue resolved.

Hello, I just bought an Edge 15 and I'm wondering if backlight bleed is a common problem with it. There are several places around the edge of the display where the backlight discolors the screen. I've attached a picture; note the top edge of the screen especially. Is this normal, or is it worth looking into a repair?  Also, I'm surprised that this model does not appear on Lenovo's website at all. I have only found one review for it, and it seems Best Buy was the only one to sell it. Anyone know about that? EDIT: Apparently my thread was moved to the ThinkPad Edge forum, though I'm pretty sure that this is not a ThinkPad Edge series device (as far as I can tell that series was discontinued and this was not ThinkPad branded). If someone could clarify that would be awesome. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a new laptop and currently deciding between this ThinkPad Edge E540 (479 Euros) and this refurbished ThinkPad T420 (299 Euros) I'll be using this almost exclusively for working with audio (music production, DJing, recording & listening to music) and almost nothing else - I run Ableton and Traktor which are quite CPU-heavy so the processor is quite important.Whichever I bought I would be taking the DVD drive out and putting in a SSD for the OS and my programs, and I would also be adding an extra 4GB of RAM.I don't have much money at the moment so the 180 Euros I'd save by buying the refurb would be very appreciated, however I really don't want to compromise the speed/lifespan of my laptop.---So my question is, how much do you think a 3-4 year old T420 (which from what I understand are one of the best laptops ever made) would compare to a brand new Edge E540 in terms of speed, and which do you think would last longer?---Thanks in advance for your input.

Hello, I bought my thinkpad 4 months ago (brand new but every now and then (sometimes 2 times a month, but today i had it for 2 times on the same day) when i boot my system (Windows 7 or Linux) i black stripes on the screen, it looks like one line is on the next line is off/disabled. the vertical stripes are everywhere no mather what OS i run. When i shutdown the computer and boot it up again its gone. When i have the stripe problem and i visit for example google.com and close my webbrowser i can still seethe google logo in the background. (like a ghost)... Can someone tell me what to do with this? I already looked for updates with the lenovo update manager. Thinkpad Specifications: Thinkpad T61 7663-2EGIntel C2D T7500Nvidia Quadro 140NVS1440x900 resolution screen. I tried to make photos of the screen but that isn't working i get all kind of colors I also just tried to attach my desktop monitor to the laptop but when i enable it the laptop screen flickers and both screens work just fine then. (so i can't find out if it is the screen or it is the videocard that gives me problems) I tried to find a topic with similar problems but can't realy find it, i hope i post it in the correct forum. Can someone tell me what is worng with my thinkpad? Do i have to call Lenovo to get for a repair??

Hi there,

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Thinkpad T40. I've tried two different sets of drivers, the Generic PnP drivers that Windows provides, and also finding a none WDDM driver for my specific chipset. Both times, Full screen video just becomes a mess of vertical lines flashing all over my screen...

This is from any source, Windows Media Player, youtube, other online sources, etc.

Has anyone ever dealt with this before? Any help is appreciated!

Answer:Thinkpad T40 problems with Full screen Video

Download Speccy to find out what Video Card you have, the Lenovo site says ATI Radeon, but download it to be sure. And then go to the website of the manufacturer to download the drivers.

Answer:Thinkpad T61p upgrade from xp to vista video card problems

Have you downloaded and installed the core chipset drivers? If so it might be possible that Windows has problems to determine your hardware. My old PC (not a TP) couldn't detect any hardware successfully.  So first step is to install the core chipset drivers (Intel INF Chipset etc.) in order to get it running.

- Thinkpad T500- Dock II (Docking station)- Nvidia - GEForce 8400 GS- Windows XP SP3 New unit- modified build of XP We have tried to install the video drivers from disk, but the system won't recognize them.  We have modified the BIOS to run external video after boot.  But it just locks up when placing the unit in the docking station.  We just get the 1 long beep-followed by 2 short ones (video error)- Note: we are not using switchable graphics, nor have we loaded the drivers or enabled it in the BIOS...cuz we know that's NOT for XP. Nothing here and nothing on the NVIDIA site. Any help appreciated

Answer:Problems with T500 Thinkpad, GEForce 8400 video card and docking station - in XP SP3

OK... the T500 and dock work fine apart.  Does anyone have any experience/luck with an NVIDIA GEForce 8400 GS?   This is tricky, as the drivers/support seems to be aimed at the Vista or Windows 7 OS crowd.

Hello. I have an almost four year old Lenovo Thinkpad SL510 2847CZU Windows Seven 64 bit laptop with Mobile Intel 4 Express Chipset Graphics which has developed a problem with scrolling and pulling up menus. For example when I put the cursor inside the radar map of Accuweather it automatically zooms out to the world. Also when I try to pull up a menu inside a page it flashes briefly but won't come up.The same occurs when I right click for a menu. This is not a problem with the Chrome browser. It also occurs in the Start Menu and property pages of Device Manager.I can control this a little bit by using the CTRL key but not in every instance. Scrolling the entire page generally works okay although there can be shakiness. I have done the usual things to try to fix this. Uninstalling (and reinstalling) the graphic driver didn't work because the problem was still there with VGA mode. I have looked for a stuck key or other problems with the pointing devices, but the keyboard arrow keys present the same picture. I have tried an external monitor and finally loaded a Linux live DVD but these attempts didn't lead to a solution. So far this is just an an annoyance but it might stop me from doing things which involve a lot of menus. I hope someone can solve this problem. I am otherwise very satisfied with Thinkpad products. Best regards Ron

Hello, I am going to be using this laptop for Senior School, already 1 term in and am hating the laptop we recieved 2 years ago. I would prefer if a Lenovo Staff or Moderator can confirm if this is possible to buy as it's not on the Customize page. With the 14" model, I can get the 9 cell battery option but no choice of the Intel Centrino Advanced 6200N wireless card, and with the 15" model I can't get either. I know it's possible to use that card with the edge, but why isn't it avaialable to choose? The same with the 15" with a 9 cell battery option? Cheers, Matt. [This is from the Australian Store]

Question: Thinkpad Edge 14

I've recently received my Edge 14 and upon unboxing, I noticed the top of the laptop (the back of the screen) is curved.  I've seen countless videos and customer photos of their Edge and have not seen this on their's.  The curved screen is very noticeably.  You can also see that the speakers are curved as well due to it.  Does anyone know if its suppose to be like this?  If not then do you think I can get a full refund and none of that 15% restocking free junk?  Besides, I don't think I'm at fault here but rather who ever built the thing.  I am fairly disappointed to see this because I hear Thinkpads are quality built.  This is my first Thinkpad and my first impression was it is just another cheaply made laptop.  I've also bought the sleeve for this and that doesn't even fit properly.  Theres a huge gap when you place the laptop in.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14

Hello mate, Can you take a photo of your laptop ?And for the sleeve, it's because you've got the room for the AC adapter.

Hi,     I have recently bought a Thinkpad Edge (AMD / L625) to replace my dependable but very aged Dell Precision M50. The Think Pad Edge I think is a great machine and does everything that I want it to do. One minor niggle and I think it only bugs me because of my engineering background is the systems specs. The Toshiba Satellite T135D-S1325 which is powered by the same processor and chipset can support 8GB of RAM, whereas the Edge can only support 4GB. Given that the memory controller is integrated into the Turion CPU and it is unlikely that Lenovo had AMD fab a custom CPU, shouldn't the edge also support 8GB of RAM. Has anyone tested an 8GB of RAM on an edge?If so does it work?Have Lenovo limited the Edge's RAM capacity through its hardware or software implementation? One final question if the system does support 8GB of RAM does the RADION 3200 IGP then take control of 512MB of system ram, rather than the 256MB when using 4GB of RAM. I was only thinking about this upgrade as a midlife refresh to give the system a little bit more horsepower. Kingston, Crucial and Corsair, to name just a few all make compatible 4GB memory modules, or atleast they conform to the specs of the current 2GB modules. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

Answer:Thinkpad EDGE - AMD - 8GB RAM ?

welcome to the forum!

since the edge likely wasn't tested with 6GB or 8GB, the specs didn't reflect the system's full capability.   the same thing happened with the X61 and T61 systems.   they were rated at 4GB maximum but many users (myself included) are successfully running 8GB.

i'm not personally aware of any limitations in memory.   8GB and even 16GB (if 8GB DDR3 modules are ever released to the public) should be possible.

with that said, i cannot say definitively whether 8GB is supported but i'd be very, very surprised if it weren't.   i have an edge sitting on my desk with 2 x 2GB installed but unfortunately don't have any 4GB DDR3 modules to test.   if i get my hands on a 4GB module or two before this system leaves my office then i'll let you know the results.

enjoy your new system!

I currently own a Lenovo Thinkpad r61i with a 15 inch screen 1gig of ram, 6.5 lb. and windows vista! I am wanting to buy a new laptop. I am a student and I have my laptop everywhere I go and I need something light, pretty fast, and gets good battery life. I think I want to buy the thinkpad edge, but I have a few questions for people who have already bought it.  How have you handled there being no CD drive. I was thinking that I wouldn't have a problem because I mainly download software but I want to know how others handled it. I think I would image a cd on another computer and mount it with WinMountIs the 1.3ghz CULV processor good for this computer. I really don't want it to hang as that is my current problem or with the high ram is it fineHow is the new keyboard layout. I am constantly typing on my current thinkpad and I want to make sure that it is a good layout as I am constantly taking notes and writing essays    Please answer,Jeremy

Answer:Should I Buy the ThinkPad Edge

Hi Jeremy. I just got my Edge about a week ago.  I am also a college student.  I haven't had any problems getting around the CD drive.  My husband loaded Windows 7 Ultimate to a flash drive, then loaded it onto my computer.  I like not having it.  I was constantly bumping into the open button on my Vaio.  Very irritating when you are taking a timed exam online!  The Edge isn't as light as a netbook but it is pretty light.  I had a hard time deciding on the S10-3t or the Edge (as is evidenced by my posts on these boards--very embarrassing!!).  I am very glad I changed my mind and ordered this one.  I have the AMD Neo X2 L325 (1.5mhz) so I can't help with your question about the 1.3.  What I can tell you is that I haven't had a single issue with hanging.  This machine is very responsive.  I have a Thinkpad z60m.  The keyboard layout seems very similar to me.  I haven't had any trouble acclimating.  AND I LOVE this keyboard.  It has a better feel than the z60m, and that's saying something!  Prior to using this Edge, the Z60m was my favorite keyboard hands down.  I write quite bit (English/Communications major) and this keyboard is very comfortable. Battery power is pretty good.  I'm sure you'd get a lot more out of a netbook. I hope that helps a little. Karen

just recently bought my first laptop and got good recommendations on lenovo...however i have found everything else to be fairly frustrating. There are no instructions regarding inital battery setup to ensure lengevity in the box. i called customer service. i looked online. they directed me to go back online and read a manual which still did not have the proper information and was organized extremely poorly. basically im just venting a little about my lack of satisfaction and wondering how to get the most out of battery/. I have looked everywhere.

Answer:New Thinkpad edge 14

New owner here also. There was limited documentation in the box, and on the last pages of something that looked like generic policy / license info, I found a few basic instructions. Of note, the battery may not have full capacity until it has been fully charged and discharged for several cycles. Agreed documentation is not the best, but everything is pretty straightforward, except detailed configurations, which is always trial and error. So far, I really like the notebook.

Recently, my HDD has begun to grind to a halt on my Thinkpad Edge e420. I decided to replace the HDD to an SSD, and after many, many unsuccessful attempts to reinstall the OS via Rescue and Recovery, cloning the drive etc, I decided to install the OS onto the new SSD using a windows disk. While this seems to have worked, I now no longer have any of the preinstalled Lenovo software. This is disappointing, but also seems to have reduced the functionality of the laptop (eg the networking device is no longer recognised).Could anyone please recommend a method of reinstalling the Lenovo software onto this new SSD.

Windows 7 right? Download ThinkVantage System Update, it should download most of the drivers and applicable softwares for your E420.

Question: Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi,i had a problem with the monitor backlight on my E525. It went totally gone and i needed a flashlight to see anything. I deinstalled the graphics drivers and it was fine again. Answer:Thinkpad Edge 525

Hi, startrip

I think I found what you're looking for. This is the driver for the AMD graphics that your computer uses. To find drivers on Lenovo's site easily, go to support.lenovo.com, click on Driver Matrix, select the line of computer you have (ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, etc.) and then select your system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, I recently bought a thinkpad edge 13 with the AMD Athlon Neo. Windows 7 and Ubuntu works fine so far,but my CPU is reaching over 90°C (!) during testing with the thinkvantage toolbox stress test.I doubt this is normal.I am logging temperatures with Open Hardware Monitor (Windows 7). Everest Ultimate reports similar temperatures. It seems, that Cool And Quiet is not working, because I can see no changing in current or clock (CPU-Z).

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 13 AMD Athlon Neo x2 - very hot!

This laptop really dont support qool n quiet. in my opinion that is the biggest problem.  but your temparature degrees are not  true. everest reads much more then real temperature.  you can check real heat by "rmclock" utility.

My Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 is dead, system board is out for no known reason. Bought it in Feb 2011, so its 2 years and 8 months old. The price of a new board is prohibitive, and I can't find a used one. By forking out the premium price for a Thinkpad I expected to get at least 3 years out of it. Also own an IBM T30 I bought back in 2003, still working. Also bought a Lenovo 3000 N100 six years ago, still going. I always used my Thinkpad Edge in a safe and protected environment, rarely took it out, never abused it, always took great care of it. I'm really disappointed, i thought I was set for life with this line of laptops - I run a software company. I'm not angry but I really don't think I'm getting another Lenovo. I'll probably give HP a try.  IBM quality is gone, good bye Lenovo.

Hi I just got my new thinkpad edge 320, and every so often it locks, going to the login screen, seemingly for no reason. It's not when it's idle, it seems to happen most if I close my browser. I have searched for all lock settings and set them to not lock. Can anyone help?

Hi, I've read the reviews and like the look of the Edge with a 14" display as this model offers Core i3 and DVD drive which is part of the base spec I require for a laptop for my daughter going off to uni this autumn. Hoever, I'm struggling to find availability from UK retailers and the Lenovo direct sales portal which all seem to refer only to 13" or 15" models. So I'm now wondering if the 14" model is sold in the UK at all? thanks for any help or pointers,Mike

Answer:Thinkpad Edge 14" model in the UK?

Hi Mike,I think Thinkpad Edge 14" is not available in UK in this moment, as I also couldn't any retailers(even online shop) has this model.David

We have recently purchased a few thinkpad edge laptops. We planned on getting one laptop setup and confgiured and taking a Ghost of the disk to clone to the rest of the machines. However the laptop hangs at the thinkpad bios screen. I saw for some older thinkpads that a special option when making the image would fix the issue. Also we noticed that the laptop had a weird 1.5gb partition before the windows one. Has anybody gotten this to work before? Or does anyone have a tool that they have used successfully.Note: We had an image of a pervious batch of thinkpad edges that would ghost fine. (Although the image doesn't work on this newer batch.)

Answer:Ghosting a Thinkpad Edge 520

I haven't used Ghost in years and confess I've never imaged an Edge system, but what you are looking for may have been discussed in this thread.  Please take a look and let us know if it helps or not.

Hey all,For more than a month now, I've been experiencing a weird issue with my Thinkpad Edge 14, which displays itself as a weird screen flickering upon the computer being frozen (attached are pictures and a short video of the issue which is hard to describe). After which, I have to force shutdown the machine. Also, sometimes the issue displays itself as a blue screen and then reboots. Usually, after the shutdown/reboot, the computer doesn't boot, but rather turns the fan on high speed, but the screen remains black. After shutting down and turning the machine on again, the computer boots itself. At start, the problem used to only occur when running a heavy game like Civilization V, but not during regular use such as browsing, online video watching etc, so I wasn't really worried but still took the computer to a technician. With time, the problem grew worse and used to happen a few times a day, mainly while watching videos online via flash video viewers and similar usage. I have visited a computer technician who replaced the laptop's cooling system and fan. for a day or two, the machine worked fine, but with time, the problem came back, and has become worse. Now days the laptop is UNUSEABLE, even on simple use like facebook or simple web viewing freezes or displays the same symptoms. even upon not using the computer at all, and even while booting up or starting Windows ! I'll be happy to give more information as need. I'm really quite desperate and don't re... Read more

Until Yesterday my laptop was working fine without any issues. Today it will not turn on!!!!. I tried the following steps: 1- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the battery back in and pushed the power button, but it will not turn on. 2- unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery. Then, push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals. Next, push and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then put the AC adapter (without battery) and push the power button and still not working. Even if AC power adapter is connected, the Power-status indicator is off.  My warranty expired last month and lenovo support told me that I am out of luck. I read that some batches of faulty EEPROM chips are used in the Edge series. Is there any way to check if my chip is in the list? I hope lenovo laptops lasts more than their one year warranty period. Just read the threadE420 motherboard problems          I will try to post this info in all other tech forums i know of so that atleast it may save someone's else money and time.

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E40 will not turn on

E40 machines and E420 are different machines. What affected the E420 doesn't affect the Edge E40.Edge E40 was a rebadged Edge 14 series, which is an older generation Edge 14 inch laptop.

Good afternoon,

I would like to write a complaint, regarding my Lenovo laptop, which I have purchased approximately 1 year ago. I have chosen Lenovo as reliable computer company, but I was disappointed, as first taint occurred in one and a half month after purchase. Second was in the middle of the year, and third one was about 2-3 weeks ago. I used to buy another computer suddenly, as my job performance seriously depends on my computer. I am working in airlines as head of flight support division/first officer, so you can imagine how strong strike to me it was. Unfortunately, only 1 year warranty was on my Lenovo laptop(which was expired approx 1 month before it's last taint). Besides 2 first taints, third one was absolutely last, as motherboard has completely failed. I was advised by computer repair technician, that in order to fix my computer, I need to buy a new motherboard, which price is 1400LT (approximately 400EUR), when the price of my computer was approx 2300LT (year ago), now it's price much lower. It was more beneficial to buy a new computer, than to fix computer which age is 1 year and which had fails 3 times. I could no realize, what I could expect in month or 2 months after buying new motherboard. I think, that that computer was completely unreliable. Also I  think, maybe it was a defective batch of mine model? Maybe you have attained more complaints regarding that model and batch? Trusting to your company, it is completely unbelievable, that it ... Read more

I bought a Thinkpad Edge E530 about a year in a half ago, now, it is out of it's warranty and it will not power on! The laptop is in pretty bad condition - the pastic covering the heatsink is missing, the screen was replaced, and it is basically held together by a few screws, superglue and duct tape (Seriously). I put it in storage for about 4-5 months, recently (About 2 weeks ago) I took it out. As it kept on overheating and the screen was falling apart, I decided to clean out the fan and superflue the screen back in place. I powered down the computer and took off the bottom access panel to air-dust the fan. I then applied some glue to the seams of the screen. When I screwed everything back together, I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I tried using only the AC adaptor, only the battery, both, replacing the little battery inside, and pressing the power button 10 times (Although unsure if done correctly). The only sign of "life" from the computer is if I plug in the AC adaptor, a very faint buzzing occurs from a metal block next to a removable chip with 2 wires coming out of it (Presumably the WiFi/Networking chip?). The block looks like a SMD compnent and is labeled with  "100" on the top of it. I'm not sure what it is and it is creating a faint buzzing noise so you have to put your ear against it to hear. I've tried every possible step - and It is definently not any physical damage done to the laptop, because no sudden drops or damage was taken after it be... Read more

Question: Thinkpad Edge E520

After a few months of very little use only using it once a week or less to watch a movie my laptop refuses to power on. I checked my A/C adapter with a multimeter and its showing normal 20V. I then took out the battery and connected it just to the adapter and it still wouldn't turn on nor would any of its lights flicker. I also tried to disconnect the battery and adapter and hold down the power button for 5 whole minutes but still nothing. What should I do? I checked and its still under warranty.

Question: Thinkpad Edge e520

Just got Thinkpad  Edge e520, replacing my  trusty and  reliable 3000 n100 that  is  actually  still working.  This machine, upgrade that  it is, is not very  impressive.  The  hypersensitive keyboard is driving me  nuts with  all  the multiple,  repetitive  letters it's producing, forcing me to correct  almost all words,  including those I''m typing now.........otherwise  it  would be  unreadable.  Hopefully adjustments can be made, or back it goes.  Hello Apple!     Other problems right out of  box, most of  which I've taken care  of, with  some assist by Lenovo Tech support.  However, still  can't get  Simple Tap to  function fully or consistently  after uninstall/install  couple times,  better but not right.  I've never gotten the finger tap part to work at  all, though I can click OK.   My old 3000 had much  better  feel to it,  and at least to  me,  a ggrreeatt feeling trackpad  compared to this. Suggestions?.......................by the  way, I  left the word great in prior sentence as it came out of computer as an example of  what  is printing.

Hey So I've had my Thinkpad Edge 14 since the end of last summer.  I keep putting this off but now it has gotten to the point where I am sick of it.  Here is my problem: I plug my Thinkpad Edge 14 into the charger, which is obviously plugged into an outlet.  Usually it's while the system is still running but lately I've tried shutting it down first.  Now, about 1-2 minutes after I plug the laptop in, the CPU starts to FREAK OUT.  I have Rainmeter set up so I can keep track of my CPU/RAM/network and such.  So my little graph of my CPU starts to spike and it goes from 0% -> 26% -> 0% -> 78% -> 100% ->0% and so on and so forth.  This doesn't happen over time, this happens constantly.  The CPU just keeps jumping and dropping.  This kills my performance.  Everything becomes jumpy and slow.  Opening a folder or my browser (which should take 2 seconds, if that) now takes about a minute.  Before, I was able to just turn off my laptop and turn it back on, no problems.  Now, I turn it off and turn it on 3-4 times and it is still jumping so I just let it sit there till the machine is charged.  I've gotten into the habit of just charging it overnight just so I don't have to deal with it in the morning.  I haven't a clue what is wrong or how to stop it.  This also has nothing to do with going to the Task Manager and ending a few processes.  I've tried and it does nothing. I'm... Hello,My nearly brand new Thinkpad (2 months tomorrow) won't start up anymore. After the initial start-up screen with the Thinkpad Logo it goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left-hand corner. Can anybody please tell me how I can enter a secure windows 7 or reset to the last previously working set-up? I installed one program during my final session during which the laptop was working fine. I've got the same software on my old Notebook and never had any problems with it.Really annoyed with the Lenovo support system already. I bought the bloody thing with a warantee but during the warantee check all comes back blank and the stupid telephone support just refers to the website and kicks me out after that! HELP!

Question: thinkpad edge e420

I was just wondering what everyones take is on the edge e420?I was looking at one and i was just wondering if anyone has encountered any major problems with them and if they are pretty good for the price. I noticed that the e420 has a large touch pad and the one im looking at has the core i3 23XX series with hd 3000 is what the specs claim. Also Im using a thinkpad t41 right now and how much different is everything, mean im running windows 7 ultimate on the t41 but without aero cause of the 32mb ati chipset. does the e420 have a good keyboard and is it better than say an hp or asus laptops on longevity and quality. Also is there any major flexing of the laptop? some insight would be nice

Answer:thinkpad edge e420

I have the I5 2410m version with win home prem (1141-a24) and I have been very happy with it so far. Previous ThinkPads z60t, t43.I picked up my E420 the first part of January. So far seems like a pretty solid computer. The experience has been very smooth (I have been meticulous about checking that I have the latest updates). Really impressed with it so far.My t43 (2gb Pentium M, 2GB DDR2, ATI graphics, and 1400 x 1040 screen) was running win 7 Ult. The user experience has been very nice (don't know how else to explain it.) Fast boot (30sec), quickly loads most programs... overall, every aspect has been very consistent and predictable.Flex is not an issue. I have not opened it up to see how its put together, but its pretty ridged. I should also mention that it is super light compared to any notebook I have ever owned. So, now the bad...or rather, observed items that I would probably change: I miss my ultra bay (the drive that is installed is pretty nice, I just don't like the outer cover. I worry about grabbing it oddly and breaking it..not a big deal though), I miss my ThinkLight, and the front 'edge' of the Edge can feel kind of sharp to your wrists if you type in certain angles. The chicklet keyboard is up to lenovo standards in my opinion (however, I do miss my t43 keyboard).Notables: The LED screen is wonderful, and I have very glad that its offered in anti glare. The front facing speakers sound very nice.Bottom line. Nice computer, and IT IS very much a ThinkPad, but it n... Read more

I'd like to install a bluetooth card in my 0578-N8U to free up a USB port from a mouse dongle... looking at the Thinkpad Hardware Maintenance Manual, I'm wondering if there would be any issues if I were to source and install the BDC-2? If no issues, would Lenovo be able to confirm a P/N or model # for the compatible card?  Thanks!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge 14 BDC-2 install?

Here's the link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual which I was referencing in my initial query: BDC-2 removal & installation After some more digging around, I came across this info from thinkwiki which provides FRU P/Ns but does not specify which model for the Edge 14: ThinkPad Bluetooth Daughter Card (BDC-2) ... not sure how accurate this info is though.  Hoping Lenovo support can verify no whitelist issues if I attempt the install?
