Thinkpad edge e420 is totally unresponsive

Question: Thinkpad edge e420 is totally unresponsive

I bought this computer like two weeks ago and all of the sudden the computer won't work at all. I can't turn it on and the light indicating that the machine is charging won't light up when I plug it in. The area around where the power cord plugs does get warm though, which makes it seem like the computer is charging. Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Thinkpad edge e420 is totally unresponsive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thinkpad edge e420 is totally unresponsive

take the battery off and ac adapter off, press the on/off button 10 times in 30 sec succession, and then plug everything back. Now restart, if that don't work, then you would to call warranty support.

Question: thinkpad edge e420

I was just wondering what everyones take is on the edge e420?I was looking at one and i was just wondering if anyone has encountered any major problems with them and if they are pretty good for the price. I noticed that the e420 has a large touch pad and the one im looking at has the core i3 23XX series with hd 3000 is what the specs claim. Also Im using a thinkpad t41 right now and how much different is everything, mean im running windows 7 ultimate on the t41 but without aero cause of the 32mb ati chipset. does the e420 have a good keyboard and is it better than say an hp or asus laptops on longevity and quality. Also is there any major flexing of the laptop? some insight would be nice

Answer:thinkpad edge e420

I have the I5 2410m version with win home prem (1141-a24) and I have been very happy with it so far. Previous ThinkPads z60t, t43.I picked up my E420 the first part of January. So far seems like a pretty solid computer. The experience has been very smooth (I have been meticulous about checking that I have the latest updates). Really impressed with it so far.My t43 (2gb Pentium M, 2GB DDR2, ATI graphics, and 1400 x 1040 screen) was running win 7 Ult. The user experience has been very nice (don't know how else to explain it.) Fast boot (30sec), quickly loads most programs... overall, every aspect has been very consistent and predictable.Flex is not an issue. I have not opened it up to see how its put together, but its pretty ridged. I should also mention that it is super light compared to any notebook I have ever owned. So, now the bad...or rather, observed items that I would probably change: I miss my ultra bay (the drive that is installed is pretty nice, I just don't like the outer cover. I worry about grabbing it oddly and breaking it..not a big deal though), I miss my ThinkLight, and the front 'edge' of the Edge can feel kind of sharp to your wrists if you type in certain angles. The chicklet keyboard is up to lenovo standards in my opinion (however, I do miss my t43 keyboard).Notables: The LED screen is wonderful, and I have very glad that its offered in anti glare. The front facing speakers sound very nice.Bottom line. Nice computer, and IT IS very much a ThinkPad, but it n... Read more

Hi, My "fn" key seems to sporadically stop working properly.  Most of the time, pressing it along with F1, F2, or any of those buttons does not seem to produce any result.  It randomly starts working at times, but only for a minute.   Strangely, the only way I can get it to actually work is by holding it down for ~30 seconds causing a dialogue box entitled "Thinkpad Keyboards Properties" to open.  While the dialogue is open, the fn key works properly- but again, only temporarily.   Things I have tried: 1)  Restarting my computer. 2)  Switching the "fn" and "ctrl" keys in the BIOS. 3)  Enabling and disabling legacy mode (changing whether or not you need to press fn to access the F1/ F2 etc. keys) 4)  Updating all drivers. 5)  Performing a system restore to a time before I recall having the problem. 6)  Performing an authentic rain dance and cursing the heavens. The OS I'm using is Windows 7.  No other solutions I've found online have worked.  As far as I know, there has been no physical damage or liquid damage to my computer.  I haven't downloaded any strange programs recently that could be linked to this.  Nothing else has malfunctioned besides this button.  It's frustrating because I use both the F keys and the 'control volume' keys regularly, so I can't just remain in default or legacy mode as I would need to switch back and forth ... Whether or not the laptop is on battery or A/C, the fan "surges" for a second and then is quiet.  Obviously, I understand the need for the fan to come on/off, but what is this 1 second "surge" thing??? Thanks for any replies!

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E420 Cooling Fan

hey zaqxsw,

when this "surge" occurs, does it happen when you startup the unit or it happens when you are doing your work ?

So I just returned a Dell Vostro 3450 b/c of poor build quality and bugs, and I'm looking for a replacement. I have owned a T61p for many years, and love it. Do the TP Edge machines have similar build quality as my trusty T61p? Also, the Dell I returned featured a backlit keyboard, which was actually a surprisingly nice feature. So I would prefer a backlit option, if it's possible... After a lot of searching around, I haven't been able to find anything regarding a backlit keyboard option for the E420 (although, I found a lot of info regarding the previous year's Edge lineup, and a lot of confusion about which machines did or didn't have backlit keyboards). I checked the slbook for the 1141-xxx (non-CTO) for this year's Edge E420, and for "Thinklight" it says "None" and it gives no indication of a backlit keyboard (just 6 row, spill resistent, multimedia FN). So, any chance this has backlit keys standard?? -- Just an optimistic shot in the dark, because I'm guessing that's a "NO," but I had to ask... So finally, is there any chance that a backlit keyboard option will be coming to the E420 CTOs? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Answer:Considering ThinkPad Edge E420 - Have a question

i believe if you do a little googling and research you can find out the comparison between the e420 and the T model line. i know for a fact that the thinklight is only on the e420s version. you might want to read a bit what the difference are between the 420 vs the 420s version

1. Where is Enhanced Experience 2.0? Or are the tweaking already done? 2. If it is already done, then my startup is very slow. I am comparing to a System of my old Toshiba, which start up faster then this Lenovo Enhanced Experienced 2.0 Thinkpad Edge E420. My old laptop is a Pentium M 1.8Ghz Single Core, 1GB DDR 1 Ram, and a UATA 33 5200Rpm HDD. I dont trust the marketing things about EE 2.0, but i didn't expect it to be slow. 3. My Sandy Bridge Gfx Drivers is from ATI / AMD?? What is going on?  Does that mean i will never be able to install official drivers from Intel. Given OEM dont normally update their drivers, this sounds like a bad point.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 : Questions.

1. The tweaking is already done.2. Startup shouldn't take more than a minute.3. If the E420 has switchable graphics, then the Intel drivers will have to be provided by AMD, so no, you won't be able to use stock Intel drivers without breaking switchable graphics.

I am thinking of buying this laptop (Specs would be i7-2640m, 6gb ram, 500gb 5400rpm hard drive, AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6630, I'm in Australia) and wanted a few opinions on it. Particularly, if there are any owners here/people who have used it: How is the build quality? How is the Performance? How is the battery life? Thanks!

Hi,  I have purchased ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4 from Korea with the following configuration:Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.3GHz (up to 2.9GHz with TurboBoost)8GB DDR3 SDRAM - Originally 4GB (1333MHz)Intel HD Graphics 3000 & ATI Radeon HD6630M (1GB dedicated) Although I am Korean, I don't use much of the Korean input and I also type without looking at the keyboard. Also, the keyboard seems a bit "crammed" with the extra letters stuffed onto the keys.  After some comparison with my local retail shops' (Singapore) ThinkPad Edge, I realized the following differences:Right Alt key is replaced by "?/?" (Korean/English input switch)Right Ctrl key is replaced by "??" (Chinese character input)The keys somehow seem to be shaped differently (could be optical illusion due to extra letters on the keys) Is it possible to fit in the fully English keyboard into my ThinkPad Edge?Even if the keyboard does fit, will the English keyboard work as it should, or like the Korean keyboard (with Alt and Ctrl replaced with other functions)?  Thanks in advance hwso1129

Well I just got a Lenovo E420, and I just wanted to make sure these temperatures are fine. Its a i7-2640m, 6gb ram with AMD Mobility Radeon HD 6630  swtichable graphics. When I turn it on and open the temp monitor (HWMonitor), nothing else open, except for all the other possible lenovo stuff that opens at start up, the temperature of the two cores is around 54-55 degrees, in a 10 minute period it has ranged from 44-61. This is on battery btw, no ac adaptor plugged in. After about 10 minutes, still no programs opened except monitor, it seems temperature of core 1 is about 50 and core 2 about 46. Are these temperatures OK? Also I will let you know on the temperatures when I am actually doing something and should I use something to stress out the CPU and test the temperatures? If so, What should I use? Also I can hear this noise, I don't think it is the fan but something else, sort of like a long beeping noise, not very loud but can still hear it and when i put the laptop close to my ear, can clearly hear it? What could this be? the hard drive?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 Temperatures

Well I think these temps might be normal, but just making sure? so any comments on the first post would be appreciated. I just have a few other questions about cleaning the laptop/keeping it clean as I get a bit OCD about small scratches and stuff. I understand that after a while because of wear especially on the palm rests, there will be some discoloration since they are matte surfaces? So whats the best way to prevent this, also about small scratches(really just discolorations) which there already seems to be some little ones which I have no idea as to how those happened (as i said i can get a bit OCD about this stuff), can you clean them? So basically whats the best way to prevent/clean scratches/discolorations on the matte surfaces especially palm rests, touch pad and cover?

My wife has a TP Edge E420, Type 1141-CTO, which I have upgraded since the warrenty ran out. It now is successfully running Windows 10, 64Bit on a 500GB Samsung 840EVO SSD. I would like to replace the WiFi card with a dual-band version which can access the 5GHz.band on our ASUS home router. I've found an Intel Ultimate-n 6300 AGN Pci-e, Model No. 633ANHMW, IBM FRU 60Y3233 for only $12.99. There is also an Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205, FRU 60Y3253 listed on Amazon for even less. Is there any chance either of these cards will work in her TP? For those prices I suppose I could just give it a try if no one here knows. Thanks,George

Answer:Upgrade Advice for ThinkPad Edge E420

Hi,

Short answer: I don't think so

As you probably know, WLAN cards are whitelisted in BIOS.  A card must be a listed model AND have a Lenovo FRU number.

The whitelisted cards are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual

Looks like a couple of them are dual-band.  A search by FRU number may locate a source.

[edit] A quick look at the BIOS readme didn't indicate that any cards have been added to the list.

Good luck,
Z.

I have just bought a new Edge E420. Recently it has been shutting down with no warning at all. There is no BSOD, no memory dump (although that is because i have not enabled it) and no noticeable pattern. I have checked event viewer, and sure enough there are several critical errors, all of them being this: Critical ERROR ID: 41. Kernel Power Task 63"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. It's interesting though, as the laptop never reboots. It just simply shuts down with no warning. I'm beginning to think it's either a driver conflict or a thermal problem, as the system does get noticeably warm after very little use. I have installed SpeedFan, and the program reports both physical cores sitting at around 59 degrees celcius. I'm not sure where to go with this. I've reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, and have installed all the required drivers (up to date) though the issue still persists. Any ideas?

Hi, everyone.  I have a ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4.  I am currently considering a RAM upgrade to 8 GB, as I have 4GB DDR3 RAM and there is one DIMM slot available. The specs of the current RAM are written below. Source: SPDMemory Size: 4.00 GBMemory Type: DDR3-SDRAM (1333 MHz)Memory Manufacturer: SamsungMemory Manufacture Date: Week 19, Year 2011Memory Part Number: M471B5273DH0-CH9  My questions are:1. Answer:RAM Upgrade for ThinkPad Edge E420 1141-RY4

hey hwso1129,you do not need to use the same manufacturer but i do recommend you use the same clock speed.it's kinda like using bigfoot tires at the back of your car and using normal tires in the front. The car will still move but it'll feel weird.

I've seen this topic for other models but not for the E420. I have about 60g left out of my 500G stock HDD and was wondering if I could replace the dvd drive with another hard drive. I'm not sure of the process to do this as I just heard that some laptops let you do the swap. What parts would I need?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 2nd Hard Drive Possible?

you can replace the dvd drive with a hdd caddy, but it is not a Lenovo oem part, this is an aftermarket part. There is a screw on the bottom of the laptop, which holds the optical drive in place, just unscrew that and remove the drive. you can google for the hdd caddy on ebay. You can also get a mSATA drive and put it in your E420.

Hi I recently purchased an Edge E420 and noticed there is an additional function if used with Fn Key.. I tried to use it together with the Fn key and the screen shows the function is disabled. Pressed it again and it didn't enable the function back again. I tried the user manual (PDF version) and couldn't find anything related to this problem. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 laptop that stopped powering on all of a sudden. It was working fine till one day fine and all of a sudden, does not boot up the next morning. I have googled around and looked in Lenovo Forums and it looks like this is a common issue with motherboard on these types of laptops and that lenovo fixed some of these. Unfortunately, my laptop is out of warranty but I do see that Lenovo fixed similar problems for some laptops that are out of warranty. Please see the two threads below https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/thinkpad-e420-wont-start/td-p/755813https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E420-motherboard-problems/td-p/667009/page/10So, I tried calling customer service multiple times hoping that I could get to talk to a supervisor and explain the problem. Just today, I was told I need to agree to pay $575 (which is much more than what the laptop is worth) to even talk to a supervisor. This is quite disappointing. If any Lenovo support staff is monitoring it, can you help here?

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 does not boot up and customer service does not help

Its not the motherboard even though they say it is. All they will do is replace the motherboard and it will just fail on you again. I had the exact same issue and the motherboard was replaced. Next day I used it it failed again. You need to remove the CMOS battery which is located underneath the laptop. Its in the compartment with the one screw. Remove that. Remove the battery and all power supply. Then  plug the CMOS back in and  plug in powercord. Once you have done that start up as normal. Press f1 to enter BIOS. Go to the Config tab and under "power options" disable "rapid intel start." That worked for me as a temporary solution.  It clearly isnt a motherboard fault as all Tech support from Lenovo claim it to be. I mean c'mon I had the exact same fault the day after my motherboard was replaced, but after removing CMOS and battery the motherboard magically starts to work?? Must be related to the W5 problem they have been having with BIOS.  Heres a link to another thread with others with the same problem. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-S-series/E540-power-issue/td-p/1326979/page/9 Let me know if this helps at all since no one from Lenovo seems to care about helping their own customers... very dissappointed with the customer service. Personally I dont think Ill ever purchase a lenovo product again after their pathetic execuse for "tech support." Anyway good luck!

Hi, The screen on my my Edge 420 has gone really dark to the point where I need to shine a light onto it to be able to see anything (only just). I hadn`t changed anything before this occured. The computer works fine connected to my TV using that as the monitor. I`ve done some searching on this forum and tried the following to no avail:- Restart with power unplugged- Restart with power plugged in but no battery.- Held down the power button for several 1 minute intervals with the power adapter + battery out.- Using TV as the monitor: Adjusted brightness settings to maximum in Control Panel (Power Options)- Within Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel: Unticked Image Enhancement (Auto Adjust) plus unticked Film Mode Detection plus unticked Display Power Saving Technology.- Checked my Intel Graphics driver was up-to-date. I`m not great with computers but now suspect a faulty screen inverter or a motherboard problem. Pretty annoyed that this has happed to an 18 month old machine which rarely leaves my desk at home. My previous Thinkpad lasted 6 years which is why I bought this one. Could anyone suggest any other things I could try or direct me to a cost effective way to have it professionally repared? Thankyou,Roger

Hi All, I foolishly ran the Lenovo software update tool and one of the updates that installed was battery firmware v1.13. The update failed part way through and ever since my battery is having an existential crisis - I know it's plugged in and 100% charged but it reads 0% (or sometimes a red X) and the machine shuts down when AC power is removed. Being out of warranty the phone line people just keep trying to sell me a new battery and have no ideas on how to fix the existing one. I've tried the firmware update multiple times but with no joy. Also tried sourcing previous versions of the firmware which doesn't work. My battery was not one of those listed for recall. Latest and best suggestion was that it may be a motherboard issue and I could confirm by plugging in a different battery to see if it works - with absolutely no suggestion who would let me borrow their battery and plug it into my possibly killer machine. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a fix? Is anyone based in Perth, Western Australia and want to let me experiment with their battery? {you crazy fool!} Does anyone know how to contact an actual Lenovo person rather than the useless call centre (1800 041 267 from Australia, seemingly connecting to Malaysia or Thailand judging by the accents)? Consumer law in Australia would suggest these guys owe me a new battery regardless of warranty status but I don't know how I can force the issue if I can't even speak to them???&... I'm deciding between a thinkpad edge 15 with an i3-370m and a thinkpad edge e420 with an i3-2310 (for the intel hd 3000 graphics-light gamer). However, the e420 (in an ebay listing), says in tech specs "integrated camera: no". Assuming he filled out all the tech specs, is this true? Can an e420 i3-2310m 2.1 GHZ 4GB RAM not have an integrated camera? Or is it just a typo/ error when he typed it? Please answer quick I need to decide quickly which I should buy. If it doesn't have an integrated webcam I will not buy it.

Answer:Do all ThinkPad Edge E420 Laptops have an integrated camera?

hey Stealtshsz,i believe the listing is wrong as the tech specs >> http://www.lenovo.com/shop/americas/content/pdf/system_data/e420_tech_specs.pdfmentions that there is an integrated camera

I have a Thinkpad Edge E420 model 1141 CTO - I need to replace the keyboard (spilled coffee and keys are stuck) - since it is out of warranty , I am planning to do it myself - when I looked up for the parts,if I give the model number then the FRU for the keyboard shows up as 04W0764.If I give the serial number also then the FRU will be 04W2631. Which is the right one 04W0764 or 04W2631? Are both models the same? Please advise. Thanks

Answer:ThinkPad Edge E420 Keyboard part number (FRU)

Hi bhaskar39, welcome to the forums,

both are actually correct.  As far as I can tell the 04W2631 is an "older" number which has been replaced by 04W0764. You could also use an 04W0800 which is from a different manufacturer to the other.

Hi, I own a Thinkpad E420 Type 1141-KZQ which was chugging along just fine during my warranty year. It has a Core i5 with ATI Radeon 1GB discrete graphics in switchable mode apart from the Intel HD graphics.    Last month after a seemingly normal shutdown, the laptop wouldn't boot up or startup even with the power plugged in. The service center folks told me that the motherboard would need a replacement. Having just crossed the warrantly period I had to shell out 180$ to get it replaced. Took a month. Just that after I got it back, the switchable graphics does not show 2 options anymore. The Display adapters under Device manager lists only Intel Integrated HD Graphics. I've tried to scan for hardware changes, but it does not seem to pickup the discrete graphics adapter.  What am I missing? Is there something that needs to be enabled at a bios level - I can't see any options there. I've updated the BIOS to the latest version. I've got the latest graphics drivers for the laptop model downloaded and installed from the lenovo website. Do advise.   Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 Display adapter missing

Can anybody advise on the actual motherboard model that is used by my E420 with discrete graphics. I believe they've replaced it with a new motherboard that works but does not have the discrete GPU slot. Thanks

I recently purchased a pre-configured ThinkPad Edge E420 Core i3 -- equipped with Lenovo's most-basic WiFi card. Now, I need to add dual 2.4 / 5.0 GHz capability to this E420. Will the retail version of Intel Centrino-N 6250 (part # 622ANXHMW) be recognized by the ThinkPad BIOS & supported natively thru Lenovo driver updates, same as the Lenovo version of this part -- FRU 60Y3195? (My reason for asking? The Lenovo "FRU" part is ~ 6x more expensive than the widely-available Centrino-N 6250 retail version -- Gasp!) Also, I don't intend to use the 6250 WiMAX (802.16e) feature, so I don't want the card wasting my bandwidth & my patience, by discovering & reporting on available WiMAX access points... Will that feature stay dormant & out of the way, unless or until I elect to use it in the future? I hope that I'm being needlessly cautious, but I was spooked by seeing numerous references stating that the similar Intel Centrino-N 6200/6205 are NOT compatible with Lenovo ThinkPads... My sincere TIA to all who choose to respond!

Hi deltaman and welcome to the forums,

Lenovo has a whitelist in the bios that will produce an error that you can't boot past if you put a non-Lenovo branded card in there.  The reason for the whitelist is that the card is matched to the antenna in order to be compliant with FCC regulations regarding interference.  The only way around the whitelist is to modify the bios to accept the non-Lenovo card, but on a machine as new as yours, there hasn't been one made yet. So, you would be stuck with buying the Lenovo-branded card.

As far as disabling the WiMAX feature, I'm sure there's a way to do it, I've just never had of those cards so I'm just not sure how.  Maybe someone who does will chime in here.

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

Hey all, My wife's laptop, e420, has been having issues for the last 3-4 months. It started where she would shut the laptop and it would not go to sleep, the screen would just be black. You would have to hit the power button to wake up. A new issue is that we get the dreaded blue screen. The error shows that there is a problem power management when shutting the laptop. I have tried to debug the dump file with little help and I have updated all the drivers. I have a feeling the power management drivers became corrupt on an update but not sure. Any thoughts? I have updated the bios as well. Thanks!

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 Blue Screen/Black Screen Closing Laptop

I'd start by repairing or reinstalling the OS and go from there. Then you'll know wether is hardware or software related.

Hi, I just got a thinkpad edge e420 and I have noticed a high frequency/high pitch noise as well as a whirring sort of noise (sometimes, might just be hard drive tho). It is quite soft and I can only really hear it when I am in my bed at night with the laptop. It can get quite annoying. I have heard of similar problems like this when I did a search but no clear solution.  Where exactly is the noise coming from?Is there a solution? Is this normal for all e420 or is it just a very common problem that may require warranty service?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E420 High Frequency/High Pitch Noise

it is not really a problem, there is no real solution to this whining problem, as per the discussion we had on whirlpool.

I took my Y510 on a flight yesterday, I kept it in my carry-on and was secure enough to not slide around. I put it to sleep before I packed it, and when I took it out it was dead. After plugging it in absolutely nothing happens, no battery light, nothing. I tried taking the battery out and putting it back in, no luck. I don't really know where to start, seeing as how there's no response whatsoever. I've had the computer for close to two years now, and the only problem I've noticed lately was that when I left it on it would restart itself sometimes. Any suggestions?

Hello forum,

I have a relatively ancient Dell Inspiron Duo Laptop [Intel ® Atom ™ CPU N550, 1.50 Ghz with 2 GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit] that is giving me lot of problems for the last couple of weeks. I know that the specs are pretty dismal, but for what I use this laptop, I never had any problems before.

The issues first started about a month ago and progressed as below:

* First, I noticed that flash videos started playing as if they are slide shows. I searched various forums which said that this might have to do with the chrome browser & I followed some tips provided online to fix the problem, but the problem only got worse with time. Also, I could reproduce the same problem using other browsers like internet explorer. At this point, I never had any problems playing videos from my hard drive.

* During this time, I never had any problems with video play back using Silverlight plugin (on Amazon Prime), so I assumed that my laptop some how has issues playing flash and HTML5 videos. But during the last one week, even silverlight videos became very laggy. Also, from last week, even the videos from my hard drive are refusing to play normally.

* When I try to play any video, the CPU usage jumps to 100% & the computer becomes unresponsive.

* Previously, I used to temporarily fix this problem by restarting my computer every couple of hours. That used to fix the problem for an hour or so. Now, this no longer w... Read more

Hi Guys, I got a T420s back in May and it's been working fine until today. I docked it, started my day, went off for a 15 minute meeting and when I came back it was off. Nothing appears to bring it back. Battery out, AC out, battery only, AC only, docked, undocked, optical drive out, leaving everything unplugged for over an 5 mins, 20mins, an hour then the 'hold power for 10 seconds' trick  Plugging in AC directly doesn't elicit any response from onboard LEDs (although when docking the device the power LED on the dock illuminates) Does anyone have any suggestions or is this going to be an RMA type situation? Gareth

Hello Windows Gurus,
Samsung Icore 7 laptop machine.
Windows 7
8 GB RAM
Please let me know if need any more information.
I have a strange problem. When I start my windows 7 on my Samsung laptop, it starts okay, works fine for 3-4 minutes and then it just goes dead and becomes totally unresponsive.
I start in Safe mode, it works fine but of course within it's limitation of being in safe mode. It does not stop or hangs or does not become unresponsive.
Thinking of Virus, tried to clean it with AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials few times with no results.
The following WMI error is being reported few times in Event Viewer
Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM _InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected.
I have spent days to look into it but can't fix it. Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone.

I am really racking my brains here. I hope anyone can help, I truly am stuck.

A few nights ago I turned off my PC with NO prior major updates (no software installed, no updates, no reg editing). The next morning I turn it on, I log in however the desktop is blank. No start bar, no desktop icons, its as if EXPLORER.EXE hasnt loaded - but it has. Its in the taskmanager but clearly isnt working correctly.

I close the explorer.exe and open a new one - nothing. It crashes. I can sometimes open cmd.exe, but thats quite rare. Then some times, I will put in firefox.exe in the taskmanager run box and it works?! However this is rare and most the time the computer on startup is totally unresponsive. Heres what I've done to fix:

Add new admin user, login with this - didnt work
Start in safe mode - worked
System restore - restored to earlier date succesfully, but made no difference
Total antivirus scan - found a few, removed all successfully, still didnt work
Full chkdsk - fixed some errors, still didnt work
Unchecked all msconfig startup boxes - still didnt work
Started in diagnostic mode from msconfig (load basic drivers and services only) - still didnt work
Disabled all old, unused, and unneeded drivers - still didnt work

Really need help on this one guys, the almost constant state is just as if explorer.exe isnt loaded. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell is also explorere.exe which is what it should be ... Read more

Any plans on releaing drivers for ATI VGA and eventually fixing power consumption on windows 8? it would be nice...

Answer:Edge E420 and Windows 8

Hi, sardelich

I am unsure and hence cannot say when Lenovo is planning to release the drivers you are requesting, but the easiest way to stay up to date with driver releases from Lenovo is to subscribe to their RSS feed for driver updates. This will allow you to instantly be notified when new drivers for your system are released.

To set up the RSS feed, you can go here, select the RSS feed reader you wish to use (Google is the default), and select your system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

My 1st thinkpad E420, make me disappointed a bit. Just bought it for 3 days ago and found NO function supported for thinklight. Even the icon show on the spacebar but not work. My friends told me its spacebar might be common use with the other model (like a cost saving). I didn't believe them. 'Caz, the Sales & technician didn't tell me before. They just said it could work, NO problem and it's new series. And they also suggested me if something's wrong,i can return within 7days.  I didn't think this case could happen !! After 3 days past, it still didn't work. I was frustated since I couldn't reach any technician guy, also the hot line and I wasted time to search info.for this issue but nothing. Fortunately, today I could reach them (after dial for 3 days), and be told that it really didn't work for this model. This is the standard key to use common with another model i.e.E420s. OMG!! My friends were right !! Why they didn't tell me first !!.........That's it!

My computer will freeze and become totally unresponsive, mainly when watching HD video on youtube or if my background is set to a photo album and rotating pictures. Those are the 2 most common ways it will freeze right now, though it happens very occasionally other times. No error messages, the screen just freezes and I get static coming through my speakers. All of my drivers are updated, and in the past I have reformatted my HD for a fresh install, but still getting stuck. I can watch full 1080P video no problem in Media Player classic and Windows Media player, but when I try to stream anything in HD, I have problems. No issues watching youtube at 480p or lower, but if I dare click for 720P it will play for a little bit, maybe even make it through a whole video, but the inevitable always happens. I have tested the memory with Memtest86+, no issues there. I have also ran the trial version of PCMark Vantage and got a score of 7599. Nothing looks fishy from that, except it says my graphics memory is 1MB. If needed I can try to provide a link to the online results from that test. I am about to run 3D Mark Vantage also(trial version) but ha... Read more

Hi,

I'm not totally sure if this is the right bit of the forum to post this issue, but I'm fairly sure the issue is with the software rather than the hardware...

I bought a new Lenovo G50-30 laptop for my partner, running a Windows 8.1 operating system. I did some very basic stuff to get it set up,going through the configuration process that the new operating system seems to now run you through as standard on start-up, getting rid of the Superfish programme right away, booting off the free trial virus software and installing AVG, and installing Google Chrome. Then I gave her the laptop, and it worked fine... For about a day.

Then Chrome stopped working altogether, Explorer worked a bit but very slowly and only loading certain sites, and everything else is on a massive go-slow. Some programmes don't respond at all, some are incredibly slow - like a DVD won't even load properly.

I think the problem might be, as with most new laptops, that it's so pre-loaded with rubbish and stuff Microsoft or Lenovo want to sell you that all the pop ups and background programmes are putting a massive drag on it. Although I'm not sure if that would cause Chrome to break.

Is this common issue with new laptops? Are there any scans I can run to find out what's causing this unresponsiveness? And is there anything I can do to make it a normal, functioning laptop?

Any help is massively appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Brand new Windows 8 PC slow / totally unresponsive

it could be normal and may only last a couple of days. It could be updating the software and that may take a few days depending how often the computer is left on and how out of date it is. Also the search could be indexing and again that could take a few days depending how long the computer is left on. you can pause the search and do the updates manually if you want to get it over with quick to see if it helps.

to pause the index
1. Open Indexing Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type indexing options, and then click Indexing Options.

2. Click Pause. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. (The index must be running in order for the Pause button to be available.)

Also you can go to your control panel and manually update Windows to get it done quicker.

Finally, did you remove the bloatware that came with the computer?

Big file WMI cdrivebackup.wim under Q:Lenova Recovery 9,109,722 KB Is this the problem with no memory left and if so can I delete

Answer:No Memory Lenovo Edge E420

If you have no space available then make some. The Q partition has the factory install data, and you should back it up so you can go back to factory settings should anything happen to your computer. After that, you can delete it.Your computer should include a backup utility for that, look around the lenovo programs. Back it up in 1 CD and 4 DVDs and then you can delete it if you want to recover those ~13gb.The space will only be released, and not reallocated to any partition though, so you're gonna have to partition it yourself. If you aren't computer savvy just make some room in your c drive. Delete old programs, big files you downloaded and don't need, etc.

Hello, Just received my e420. When I have the laptop running on battery, there is a terrible whining/piercing noise coming from the bottom left corner. It is really annoying and hard to focus. When I have the laptop plugged in, there is no whining/piercing noise. I was doing some research and lenovo had some issues with the i5 processor. My laptop contains that i5 processor. Any help?

So I know the whole deal that the edge 420s is slimmer and lighter and stuff, but I also noticed that there are no actual buttons on the bottom of the touchpad. There are buttons at the top to go with the Trackpoint stick,  but unlike the e420 they got rid of both sets of buttons. Does anyone know how clicking works for the touchpad on the 420s? Is it just a tap to click? (assuming you aren't awkwardly using the buttons on top of the pad) Or, does the whole touchpad actually press down slightly in a similar fashion to the Macbook? Much thanks for any clarification

Answer:edge e420/e420s touchpad...

The whole touchpad presses down slightly (similar to the Macbook). Pressing to click with two fingers will give you a right-click. While I haven't used Windows with mine, I assume the touchpad can be configured to handle tap-to-click, numerous scrolling options, and possibly even to change the press to click behaviours. In addition (assuming you're not running linux and getting hit by randomly functioning trackpoint issue), the three buttons above the touchpad can also be used for clicking.

I'm having some issues with noise from my new Edge E420 laptop. So far everything's running smoothly, no slowdown or performance issues, but the noise coming out of the machine is bothersome. It happens when I'm doing a task, such as browsing the internet, but it also happens when the computer is sitting idle. I don't know what precisely is making the noise, but I suspect it's either the CPU or hard drive. The fan does make slight noise that is sort of a constant whir, but this other noise is intermittent (although frequent) and sounds like the typical computer "thinking/processing" noise but not high pitched. I had some earlier troubles with noise that was high pitched, which I rectified by turning off the CPU power management in the BIOS utility. Anyone else experience this noise issue before? If it was only every once in a while I could live with it, but the noise is constant. It's really driving me nuts!

Answer:Noise issues with Edge E420

hey candide, could you use this hardware maintenance manual >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM006567and open your unit and clean the interior, especially the fan area and the vent near it. btw, is your E420's bios at version 1.16/1.07? if it isn't, do go to http://support.lenovo.com and update.

In my pawnshop we have acquired a Thinkpad Edge E420. Someone attempted to reinstall windows, with an illegal version, we obviously can't sell it like that. The recovery partition is still there, and the old windows install is still available in the windows.old directory. Trying to run the recovery program from the partition says it is missing files. Trying to boot to the old OS from the windows boot menu states it cannot load a file. Setting the recovery partition to active in hopes of booting from it results in it saying Bootmgr is missing.I would like to do this the easy way and get it to factory restore on its own, how do I get this working again?

Thinkpad Edge E420.

This laptop will be the death of me.

I have had problems since day one.

1) On the product page, it states that the E420 comes standard an integrated webcam for all versions.  When I get my laptop, no webcam.  When I call in to ask why I didn't recieve one they say that I have to select to put a webcam with is an extra $30.00....  On top of that I can't send it in because I'm off to university in less than a week and it took almost 3 weeks for the them to ship it to me.

THE MOST ANNOYING ISSUE:2)  I fully charge the laptop and then unplug it to use it for a bit.  I come back to charge it and see it sitting at around 97% for almost an hour.  I say to myself, **bleep** is wrong here.  So it says "plugged in, not charging".  So I end up going through multiple tactics online to solve this issue and nothing works.  Updated batery firmware and windows.  So I decide to drain it for a bit and finally plug it back in and it finally starts to charge. Really. Annoying.

Now I know why the Edge series has been looked down upon by older Lenovo users.  It definitely doesnt come close in comparison to the T series.

Well if anything, can anyone tell me what was wrong with my second issue because the least I would like is to know what went wrong.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Edge E420: No webcam, battery thresholds PM defect?

It won't charge the battery higher than a certain threshold, say you plug in your laptop to charge at 95% it won't charge it fully to 100% to save battery life. In your case the power must of disconnected at 97% then reconnected and thought to itself not not start charging again because that would start another battery cycle.

Hi,

I am facing the same problem with my Edge E420. It does not record any sound from my iphone headphones/mic. It does record sound when I use internal microphone of the notebook i.e by plugging out iphone headphones. Strangely, it does show some green bars when I press the volume buttons of the headphones.

I have tried uninstalling the connexant drivers and deleting them so that windows install its own drivers. But that did not help as well. I cannot make any voip calls from my notebook because of this

OS - Win 7 pro
Driver version: Connexant 2061 8.32.27.0

Question: Thinkpad E420

Hello!  Happy Holiday!   I dont know why my Thinkpad E420 is now so slow in any operation. No matter of browsing internet, typing in word or any calucation in excel.   This happen after I installed on Tango App.  I already removed the Tango but it's still very slow.  Pls help.

Answer:Thinkpad E420

You may have inadvertently downloaded something nasty along with Tango. I would do the standard virus / malware scans.  First, you may want to go into msconfig > startup and see if there are any strange programs starting up with your computer. You may be running too much for your computer to bear.

This is a little review of the situation of my Thinkpad, maybe someone could lend me a hand (important: I use the notebook without a battery): 1) The notebook arrived (I bought it used in a forum), I installed Windows, everything fine2) The notebook started shutting down randomly that same day, not rebooting, just plainly powering off. As there were some problems with the energy suministry that day, I thought that it was an energy issue.3) Next day everything was great, I run some Intel Burn test and Furmark to be sure about the power issues (maybe the charger was faulty and it wasn't capable of giving the required power). Everything ok, with these benchmarks I also discarded temperature issues.4) At night it started again, but now the notebook was rebooting. It would power up, and shut down in middle of that, so I thought again of a power issue (It wasn't an OS fault) 5) I waited until the next day, now when I plugged the charger the light that indicates so won't power up at first intance, but powered up after disconnecting and connecting it again.6) That approach of connecting the charger in two times worked for around a week, now the light was impossible to turn on. That day I read about the "press ten times then hold for 30 seconds" thing, at first it didn't worked, but after a few times of connecting and disconnecting the charger it worked. Some times the light would light up for a second or less, but finally it reached a point when it was permanently on.7) Her... Read more

A few days ago my friend tripped over the power cable or the network cable, I'm not sure which one, which caused my laptop to fall off my desk. It fell about 3 feet and landed on the corner of the screen which cracked it and it's now completely unreadable. It also cracked the part where you plug in the power adapter and bent the adapter itself. Amazingly, enough, it stayed on the entire time and after hooking it up to my tv, everything seems to be working ok. Since I'm a college student and don't have a whole lot of money, I didn't get the warranty to cover accidental damage so I'm planning on fixing it myself. The screen itself looks pretty straight forward to fix and I already ordered a replacement online. The adapter is what I'm concerned about. It still works, but it takes a lot of force to put in and it has to be sitting in an exact position or it won't charge. It gets kind of frustrating. I brought it to a local repair shop and they said it would be around $200 to fix, which I thought was pretty ridiculous but they said it was because they would have to take apart the entire computer to get to it. So before I start ripping up my thinkpad, I have a few questions:1) How much is the adapter and where can I buy it?2) How hard would it be to install myself? (I have some experience with building computers)3) Is it possible to build a magnetic power disconnect? I have seen it on a few laptops out there (not the macs but custom design)Here's some pictures so... Read more

Answer:Dropped my Thinkpad E420

http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/

Hi Think_Maroon and welcome to the Community,

The link has videos showing how to take it apart and replace everything.

Open the link, choose Notebooks, Thinkpads, Edge, then your model.

The power jack is mounted on a small sub-board with a cable that connects to the motherboard.

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/0a60575_02.pdf

Here's your Hardware Maintenance Manual. Page 83 says what all needs to be removed to get to it.
There's also a parts list with part numbers.

Ebay only has listings for the jack itself which would need to be soldered to the sub board.  It would be a lot easier to just get the sub board.

You will probably have to call service and get it through them. Have your part number handy to give them.

You will have to disassemble pretty much everything to get to it.

Hi,  I have read from a few trustworthy online communities that certain processors such as i5-2410M and i5-2430M (which are being used for ThinkPad E420) can support AES New Instructions (AES NI) with an OEM-supplied BIOS.  I have updated my laptop's BIOS to 2.22, which is the latest BIOS released by Lenovo on 16th January 2012.  Does this version of BIOS already have feature to enable AES New Instructions? If it doesn't, when will the function become available in the future releases by Lenovo?  Thanks, hwso1129

Answer:Thinkpad E420 no reaction

Happened to me, too, just a couple of weeks ago.  From what I've read in this forum, it's a very common problem for our 420 and the E520.  Apparently, Lenovo is fixing the problem for some people, but not for most.  I have no idea what to do with my machine.  If they were just honest enough to publicly tell us what the problem is, I might at least find out what it would cost.  Clearly, they should be stepping up and fixing the issue, but... Sadly, I also have no idea what I should do to replace it.  I've been buying Thinkpads & nothing but Thinkpads since 1996.  Given that my 17 year old laptop still works where my (and hundreds of other peoples?) 15 month old Thinkpad does not, it's hard to believe it would be very smart to buy another Thinkpad. Good luck, and if you learn anything useful, please share.

i3-2330M(2.2GHz), 2GB RAM, 500GB 5400rpm HD, 14in 1366x768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11bgn wireless, Bluetooth, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 6c Li-Ion, Win7 Pro 64

There's no WWAN capability listed.  It's typical for Lenovo laptops to all have the SIM slot since it's part of the common case configuration, but it doesn't mean there's a WWAN card installed.

Hey Guys, So my Thinkpad e420 is no longer in warranty and the system decided it will not power on. There is no indication of battery charging and I have went through the full Power system check up. The Power Button will NOT power on the system when connected to AC, and I have done all the tips and tricks to try to get it going. I have opened up the Think pad and found there is no broken connections or anything out of the ordinary for the mother board. Also the Power Jack (Yellow) its completely intact and no blown connections.  I have decided to order a new Back up Battery and also a new DC-IN sub board to install the system myself. Before I do this does anyone have any ideas as to why the system wont power on or if I need to do some more tests as to why the system wont power on. Or if you have any suggestions at all please let me know. Thank you,Cmark

I need replacement screw covers for an E420. I am referring to the two that flank the left and right side of the speaker front on the front of the unit. Not the rubber feet, but merely the small screw covers.

Answer:ThinkPad E420 Screw Covers

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would suggest you to visit here to buy replacement parts. Locate your FRU number for screw covers under miscellaneous category from the Products and Parts detail page.

Please click on "Select Product", then in "QUICK PATH" enter E420 and select the exact model depending on the MTM number of your device.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello,              I have a Lenovo E420 Thinkpad Edge (1141) with an i5-2450 @ 2.5 GHz.             I'd like to find out if anyone knows whether the cpu comes socketed in this model (and not soldered to the motherboard) and if it would be possible to basically take my processor out and replace it with the i7-2640. This machine is about two weeks old.

Answer:Thinkpad E420 with i7-2640m proc

I suggest you, please do not open your Notebook cover by yourself. It may collapse your warranty period. You can visit the nearest service centre to get it replaced. Please refer the below menioned web link to locate the nearest service centre.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-service/service-provider/default.page?

Alternatively please call Support Center on 1-800-426-7378, Select "Option #1". They will assist you for the issue.

Regards,
Harish

In the morning i tried to switch it on my laptop goes back to normal but then after shutting down the laptop wont start again please help i dont know whats goin on with the laptop

Answer:thinkpad e420 wont start

Look at the issues on this forum related to motherboard problems.  There is a design defect in Edges that cause the motherboards to fail.  The only solution is a replacement, which is easy enough if you are still under warranty.  If your warranty is expired, I'd suggest you call Lenovo support and talk to a supervisor.  Since this problem is so pervasive, they should fix it even if out of warranty.

Hi, I am planning to upgrade my RAM on my E420(1141CTO). It already has a 4 Gb on one slot. Couple of questions here. 1. What is the max RAM I can go upto on this E420 (Intel i3 2nd Gen) laptop.2. As I have 4 GB on one slot can I put one 8Gb RAM (single module) on the other slot.3. What brand of RAM I can use.4. On this model can I fix another RAM myself easily or asking it the other way are the slots placed such that I can do it easily by merely oepning a couple of screws or do I have to tear everything apart.5. Any other special considerations like about clock speed ? Thanks.

Answer:RAM Upgrade on ThinkPad E420 (1141CTO)

1. 16 gigs is the max.2. yes you can3. Any (just avoid the Kingston value and Corsair Value).4. The ram slots is accessible by removing the bottom quick access plate. http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-772635. anything with 1333 mhz speed should be fine.
