ThinkPad L440 Screen Brightness

Question: ThinkPad L440 Screen Brightness

I recently updated my BIOS from Lenovo's Drivers and Software page and it seemed to have locked my screen's brightness at the fullest setting. I've tried restarting the computer and adjusting it from the windows menu, but it still stays in one setting. It's too bright to use in dim situations now. Any help would be appreicated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, i have the Lenovo L440 (20AT002YGE) with the integrated Intel Graphics.I have turned off the automatic dimming of the screen brightnes in the windows energy settings and also turned off the energy saver settings in the Intel driver but the screen keeps beeing dimmed when the background is black or dark. This is very annoying when you work outdoor and the sun keeps shining on your display and than it dimms the brightness. How i can fix this? Grüße/ greetsMarcel

On my Thinkpad, the brightness is to low, even if I increase it to maximum. The only thing that seems to get the brightness to work correctly is connecting the laptop to an AC adapter.  What could my issue be?

Answer:Screen Brightness to Low on High on Thinkpad T60

The maximum brightness in battery mode is less than in AC-mode to save battery power. You can  increase it in the BIOS under Config - Display - Brightness setting the value to "high" (see explanation text on the right side after selecting that item).

Hi! my ThinkPad shows a strange behavior... Suddenly the screen brightness was reduced by the system. Brightness is "15" but it is darker than before. I can not find any option to raise brightness!!!! I am using a Lenovo power supply unit. It is annoying to use the ThinkPad at daylight. Really exhausting looking at a screen thats too dark. Any tips? Regards, nightwatch83

Answer:Screen Brightness (ThinkPad Edge 15)

nightwatch83,

Some basic questions...

If you reboot to windows and are on AC is the screen still dim?   Does it respond at all to screen brightness increase / decrease settings?

If you restart and go into BIOS on AC, how bright is the display?  Any different than in Windows?

If the problem seems isolated in Windows, I would reload the power manager and hotkey drivers and recheck the settings in power manager for screen brightness.

Best regards,

Hello Lenovo! Please help me how to fix these bugs (or something) that makes my E550 screen no brightness at all. The E550 is displaying all the things in the screen but it's so hard to see because I cannot adjust the brightness at all. I think this was happened after a software update and I don't remember what it is. I tried to do all the things I have seen in Google searching up to the point I had reformatted the unit but nothing happened. Sometimes the screen is flickering and goes to normal but for 10 secs only and goes back again to no brightness at all. Please help!!!

Answer:Thinkpad E550 Screen Brightness Issue

Dear Vandelv,

Welcome in lenovo community,

Please try to,

1- Open Device Manager >> Right Click the VGA driver >> Properties >> choose Driver from the upper tabs >> Rollback Driver.

If it does not help try to,

2- Open Device Manager >> Right Click the VGA driver >> Uninstall >> Restart the laptop and let the windows identify the driver by itself

Hi I have a brand new E520 and I love it. But there's a quite annoying problem with the screen: it tends to change brightness (it gets brighter or darker in 3 or 4 steps). Could anyone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.

Answer:Thinkpad E520 screen brightness problem

My E520, which I bought about 2 weeks ago, also has a problem nearly like you. When screen returns after turning off for energy saver, its contrast becomes extremely high. I have to wait for a few minutes for it to turn back to normal. Besides, one more symptom is that if I use the buttons for decrease brightness, the lowest level is 2, not 1. I found that it's the Thinkpad Video Features ( Intel Hurom River GT1/GT2) for Windows 7 64 bit. I restored my laptop to before the time I install it, and everything's ok. By the way, it seems that Lenovo usually has problems about driver, isn't it?

Hi all, I would like to share my recent experience of Thinkpad X1 carbon (4th 2016) screen brightness problem, and how this problem been solved. The laptop cames good and the F5 and F6 function for screen brightness adjusting is OK. Other methods, like in the setting menu and battery menu,  to adjust the brightness are all OK.After one hour or one day or some short time, you will find you cannot adjust the brightness. Even the battery & power options are not working. The problem comes from the driver. First I thought it is the problem of driver of monitor (wide viewing angle high density flexview display 2560x1440 driver). I uninstall, update, change...but none of them work. Finally, I find it is the problem of intel hd graphics 520 . There is another evidence that during the time only this driver of intel hd graphics 520 has been updated automaticly to the latest version! So I uninstall and roll back to the version 20.19.15.4331 and the problem is solved.I did not check the lates version of this driver. But I am sure that the latest version of intel hd graphics 520 has conflict with the lenovo driver for screen brightness! I am sure there are other people face the same problem after the update of hd graphics 520 driver. Any engineer please check it!

Hi everyone. I've a problem with mi Lenovo ThinkPad T400. The brightness is always at the minimum, and cannot be changed. But it is like when you close the laptop and the screens turns off, it is almost like that, I need a lantern to see what appears in the laptop, but besides that everything else works fine. If I connect it to an external monitor, then there is no problem, but you know, I don't wanna carry an external monitor with the laptop. Do you know how to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

I have just completed a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and all went well except for the screen brightness issue. Anyone have any ideas where I can simply increase this as I have searched everywhere for screen brightness, even BIOS for any setting for display. I have latest update to display driver. I have two other laptops and each shows much brighter than this one and I am surely disappointed in this display. Not sure if it is because this screen is touch enabled and also works off keyboard that could be the issue and a separate setting could be involved on the touch side of the display as it does work with a stylus pen or touch also. thanks and   I hope I can get this brightness to increase somewhat as it is too hazy for me.

I reformatted my X220i last night. I downloaded all the drivers via Lenovos website. Everything seems to work fine except a couple things; 1) This is the big one--the screen brightness buttons don't work. All of the other Fn keys work, so I'm unsure what the problem could be. Furthermore, I can't change the brightness by adjusting the power settings. it's stuck at a VERY low brightness level and I can barely see this text as I type it--super frustrating! 2) The display is showing in up in control panel as "Generic PnP Monitor"--perhaps the two issues are correlated? 3) Not a problem persay, but in WIE my graphics/gaming graphics scores a 1. I downloaded the drivers, so i have no clue why! Thanks guys. I really need to get this brightness thing figured out--any ideas/suggestions would be of great help to me.

Answer:Thinkpad X220i -- Screen Brightness buttons don't work -- Help please!

1. How did you install OS and drivers? Was it clear (fresh) installation or from the factory recovery media? Did you use Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update application for Lenovo drivers and software?2. You can download needed monitor file from the Lenovo site:http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015012But this issue doesn't related the 1st one.3. It seems the chipset drivers has not been installed correctly. In which sequence did you install Lenovo drivers and OS upgrades?

The first and only bug so far I have encountered with my P51: Out of the box, the machine is set with the Hybrid mode in BIOS, meaning it switches between the Intel GPU and the Nvidia Quadro M2200 (Optimus). I want my machine to always use the discrete GPU, so I switch to Discrete mode in the BIOS. This however means that you can no longer change the screen brightness of the internal screen, it is always set at 100 %. Definitely seems like a driver bug. I have tried reinstalling Windows already, same result: With the Hybrid mode I can change the screen brightness, with the discrete mode I can´t.

I just changed my ThinkPad T450 laptop screen to a full-HD IPS display. The new panel (display) shows up in the Device Manager with Hardware ID MONITOR\LGD03FF. While the screen works, I can no longer adjust the brightness in Windows 10 - it's always on full brightness and the brightness key combinations no longer work (nor do any of the Windows 10 software brightness controls). The brightness adjustment keys work perfectly in Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), and they work if I go in to the BIOS. The monitor is showing up in the Device Manager as "Generic PnP Monitor". Any idea how to get brightness working in Windows 10 with the LGD03FF panel?

Answer:Brightness not adjustable on ThinkPad T450 after changing screen (to LGD03FF)

unless you have a panel with an fru number corresponding to t450, the eeid (configuration chip on the panel) won't have the correct info to allow brightness control.

Hi, I have the following issue since a couple of days (not sure it came with a recent windows/drivers upgrade): When I set the screen brightness to low, or the screen dims itself in a dark environment, it starts to flicker - there are flashes of white/blue as long as the brightness is low. Increasing the brightness gets rid of the problem. I tried disabling the panel self reflesh (PSR) which seemed to help others, but no success there. Anybody got the same issue and a possible solution? My specs: Windows 10 1709, Intel Graphics Drivers Version 21.20.16.4727 Video of the flickering:

My thinkpad's screen wasn't properly (dark) I purchased another screen and installed it and there was still nothing. If I shined a light on the screen I could see a very very VERY faint image of the startup screen/login screen and it appeared the screen was cut into four quadrants each showing the same image (4 illustrations of the same image in each of the screens quadrants). When I hook up the screen via HDMI to my TV the computer works just fine, I just can't use the laptop screen. Any ideas? I received a PCI/PCI e test failure when using the solutions center. The OS is Windows 8.1, the processor is an intel i5.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E420 extremely dark screen, no brightness

The problem with your screen is the backlight. But because you have changed the screen the cause is either the wiring or the backlight power supply. The power supply appears to be part of the motherboard, so that leaves you the video harness or the motherboard. If it is the video harness, it is repairable, but it is much much easier to just replace it. As for the motherboard, you need to look at the video connector, both on the harness and on the motherboard, and make sure none of the contacts are bent over or burnt.

I have a ThinkPad X240 which came with a 1366x768 TN panel, I hated it and so after a while I upgraded it to an IPS 1080p display. It works great and looks fantastic except it's stuck on max brightness inside of Windows 8.1. I cannot change the brightness inside of Intel HD graphics settings or inside of programs like Display Tuner. It doesn't work in Windows 10 either. The weird thing is, I can change the brightness just fine inside of Ubuntu. I've tried uninstalling the Intel HD drivers and reinstalling them, I've tried switching the drivers to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, and none has worked. I feel like I've installed every single version of Intel's Graphics Drivers and that I've done everything and it still won't change the bloody brightness. NOTHING has worked except to just use Ubuntu, which is not an adequate solution. I've even gone as far as to update my BIOS and reset it to defaults, I've even pulled the CMOS battery. I've tried the version of the Intel HD driver from Lenovo for the X240 and I've installed the monitor.ini files. I've also just learned that during the Windows Boot Logo, the FN keys WILL change the brightness, but as soon as Windows is done booting, it stops working. This, coupled with the fact that brightness control works in Ubuntu means that this must be something related to Windows right? Brightness control works in BIOS. I've even gone so far as to try and change the brightness through CMD using powercfg accordin... I recently upgraded my W700 to a clean Win7 Pro x64 install, downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from the Lenovo website, and did a manual install of all of them. Mostly there were no problems, however the OSD for mute, volume up/down, and brightness did not work. Here is the page for the Hotkey Features Integration package, which contains the OSD program: Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bi... The problem appears to be a bug in latest version of the OSD program, for the W700. I collected data on the various versions of the OSD utility; see below (I have used the overall package version as a reference, although the OSD program itself has a different version). Here is the fix: 1) Install the latest Hotkey Features Integration package. This gets the latest other packages, plus a broken version of OSD.2) Manually uninstall the OSD program (in Control Panel:Uninstall); reboot.3) Download and install the Hotkey Features Integration package version 3.85.0000. This is last version which works fully with the W700. Run the package installer, the run the installer itself. Make sure that only the OSD component is selected; run setup; reboot. That should fix it. It appears that the bug also exists in Win XP. Here is the info I have on the various versions: 3.33.0002 - OSD Works with W7003.81.0100 - OSD Works with W7003.84.2000 - OSD Works with W7003.85.0000 - OSD Works with W700 <&l... Answer:thinkpad l440 cpu upgrade?

If you do it yourself it will certainly be cheaper, but the CPU is not considered customer-replaceable, so it may affect your warranty status. If you can do the replacement in a professional manner, so it doesn't look worked on, probably nobody will complain, as long as you keep the old part and replace it back before getting service. The FRU of the i7-4600m is 04X4049. You do not want to get one marked "ES" (engineering sample). The ES parts may not be final versions

Then I tried other devices which works well on other USB ports, but it still won't have any response. If you system is under warranty, I would recommend you contact service.  If you are outside of warranty, I'm not sure if the part that is broken is on the battery or the system chasis.

The hardware maintenance manual for your system should help you identify the part and part numbers to order.

Also I noticed that something similar is going on on my home Wi-Fi, it doesnt disconnect me like in the first case, but it feels like it keeps reconnecting every few minutes (I have difficulties loading a video on youtube while on smartTV its not a problem or on any other device connected to the same network)I tried- uninstalling the driver and installing different one- reinstalling current driver- do this (https://support.lenovo.com/cz/cs/solutions/ht502846)- bunch of other stuff My spec- Lenovo ThinkPad L440- Windows 7 Pro SP1- Wireless driver - Intel(R) Wireless-N 7260 (HW ID PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_08B2&SUBSYS_C2628086&REV_6B) Thanks in advance Reiter

Hi Reiter,1. Have you tried installing Wi-Fi driver from Intel Website directly?2. Have you tried toggling between Power Plans? (Power Saver to High Performance)?3. Change Wi-Fi Adapter Settingsa. Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections, right-click Properties.b. Click Configure
c. Click Advanced tab- Roaming Aggressiveness: set as Lowest- Transmit Power: 100%

My thinkpad has been having power issues for a while now, off and on. It used to be that it would think it was charging when the AC adapter was plugged in, but still only run off the battery and discharging it. Now it'll run off the AC adapter, and says it's charging, but won't actually charge the battery. I've tried with two different batteries and three different AC adapters, but no difference. Is there some trick to fixing this? I'm afraid that if I send it in (which I've done before), they won't accept it because there are cracks on it, so I assume I have to fix it myself, or pay to get it fixed.

Hello all, I just got a L440 to replace my aging X200T. I bought this one for several reasons, one of which was the fingerprint reader. It came with Win8 but I downgraded to a WIN7 Ultimate and installed almost all the drivers on the website. My problem is that after going into the BIOS and setting security to require power-on and HD passwords, I see no way to select the option to use the figerprint reader as an option during power up instead of a password, like on my X200T. I have the fingerprint reader working fine for Windows logon, and in the Device Manager I see it is functioning properly, but I found no way to get it to come up when the computer boots. I have searched the forum and found someone with an L540 who was trying to do the same. A moderator showed a screen shot from the Fingerprint Reader Software, with a Setting page where you set this. In fact it looks similar to my X200T. But when I click on the Fingerprint Utility on my L440, all I can do is register the fingerprints - there is no option screen and it looks totally different from what he shows: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Can-t-start-ThinkPad-from-fingerprint-reader/... I have gone to both the L440 and L540 download page and all I see is a single program to download - the Lenovo Fingerprint Manager version 4.5.266.0, which is what I have installed. Does anyone know how to get the software that has this option to check? Did I miss another software package ... Read more

I am having a ton of issues with the on screen brightness display and the brightness controls in general on my windows 7 e545.  The problem seems to happen anytime I open the computer up from sleep mode.  In order to regain brightness control I have to reboot the machine.  I have done a lot of google searching and have updated the bios and hotkey drivers that everyone recommends but this has not helped.  Anyone have any idea? I am still within my 30 day window and am seriously considering sending it back.

Hi
I have Dell Inspiron13 7000 series laptop.Everything was working fine until 2 weeks back.
Suddenly I wasn't able to use F11/F12 keys to controll brightness.Even if I clicked I wasn't getting the actual brightness bar.I checked some blogs and youtube videos, which helped me and it fixed my issue.
Suddenly after almost a week or so, I am getting another issue.I can scroll up or down the brightness however it doesn't change any brightness level.Right now it is too bright but I can't change it.
Has anyone been facing this issue or resolved this?
Laptop was in perfectly operating condition before.I have been getting these issues recently after regular windows update.

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are looking for Touchpad setting on your ThinkPad L440.

Please go to Control panel ? Mouse setting and in Buttons menu tick the check box ?Switch primary and secondary buttons? this will change the complete setting for left hander users, and after applying those setting go to UltraNav menu and click on ?Touch Pad Setting? you will new window touchpad properties in that expand Buttons option on ?Left Button Action? set it to Primary Click and on ?Right Button Action? set it to Secondary Click apply the settings and click on OK.

You can give a try on the above setting; it worked with USB external mouse but I am not sure with Bluetooth mouse. Check the screen shot from the below link

Additional to my other issue with the display brightness I've got also this question: In battery mode it seems that the display brightness is automaticly adjusted by the lightness of the screen content. For exampe if I start a program with a dark background the display becomes a little bit darker. In contrast, a brighter background makes the screen a little brighter. It isn't that strong like a tap on F7 or F8 - just a little bit. Of course it's a nice feature. But for me who uses a lot of applications at the same time it is a bit annoying. Can someone give me a hint where I can turn that feature off? Didn't find anything in the energy settings. Thomas

My screen brightness using FN+F11/F12 and also in the advanced power settings slider won't adjust the screen to anything other than brightness and minimum or brightness to 100% when I move the slider.  It shows the percentage moving up and down, but the screen stays 100% until I'm on the lowest setting,  then it goes right to minimum.  I received a bunch of Lenovo updates on the first Wednesday of this month and I've had several issues since then, I tried reverting back to previous drivers, but it made no difference, so I'm back on the latest drivers.

Hi,

Recently purchased a Lenovo 440 for work. 2 weeks later, I open it to find the screen is cracked. Been emailing Lenovo but they are refusing to pay and I now urgently need to fixed so will just pay someone to do it.

Now, a lot of these computer repair company's have quoted me a lot of money which im not willing to pay, so though I'd source the screen myself, however this has not gone as planned.

I have searched the internet high and low for a Lenovo L440 LCD display but cannot find a site selling them anywhere. I seem to be able to find a screen for every single laptop in the world, bar my one.

Can anyway offer any advise here? I have managed to find this on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Think...t+screen+14%22 but I wasn't sure if it was compatible or not.

Thanks.

Hello, I have a problem with setting a custom splashscreen when booting my Thinkpad L440 in UEFI mode. The BIOS I am using is version 1.86 and model L440 obtainable from here http://support.lenovo.com/no/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l44... as per the requirements I have made the images 16 colours palette (4bpp), both images adhere to the standards logo1 legacy boot (640X480) and logo2 UEFI boot (1366X768) where I used .gif format. The problem is that only the legacy boot screen splash actually gets used, but the UEFI boot splash image (logo2) does not appear at all. Everything that happens is that you get a completely black boot screen with only the (press enter to interrupt boot... ) option. I have tried many different pictures, and different formats but arrived to the conclusion that it is broken.  Trying to boot Windows with broken custom splash screen, I get a BSOD with the error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL  and can't boot into Windows 8.1. This makes me believe that something is not working properly, and not only does setting a custom splash screen on UEFI boot not actually show my bootscreen, it could have damaged some UEFI boot drivers so that Windows is unable to start properly. Maybe the tool is outdated and did not save the splash screen correctly? Upon re-flashing the BIOS using winuptp.exe it asked me if I wanted to keep my custom splash screen, and when I hit yes it simply crashed. &nb... I have a brand new L440, 8 gig, running Windows 7 Pro (64).  The machine dims the screen to black after 60 seconds, then requires a sign-in to continue.  I have made repeated attempts to lengthen the time for both through Lenovo PowerControl and through MS Power function in Control Panel to no avail.  The screen still dims in 60 seconds even after designating 20 minutes, and after selecting presentation mode (turns off timers?).   I visually confirmed those setting were selected in both Lenovo and Windows Power settings after is dimmed in 60 seconds again.  What am I doing wrong?  (I am not all that experienced with problem shooting - have had a Toshiba for last 8 years).  Thanks!

The CCFL  (backlight) in your LCD needs to be replaced for the brightness to be improved.

Swapping it is not an easy task and I'd highly recommend replacing the entire screen or LCD assembly instead.

Hello, Currently I have an R61 Thinkpad Laptop.  I used to own a R51 laptop and I remember using the old version of ThinkVantage which used to be called AccessIBM.  With AccessIBM I remember there used to be a setting which I could control the brightness of the LCD, which I cannot seem to find in the new version of ThinkVantage for my R61.  For example, if I plug in my laptop my screen will become brighter (even higher than pressing Fn+Home).  I know that the reason why it's lower when it's using battery power is to save battery life. I'm trying to find out where this setting is so I can make it brighter when I'm using battery and trying to read documents. Can somebody help? Thanks,bahlv2002

Answer:Thinkpad R61 LCD Brightness

You have to go into BIOS (press F1 while booting), then Configurationand into Display, set the brightness to "high", press F10 to save and exit. This will keep your LCD at maximum brightness even when running on battery. Hope this helps.

Answer:thinkpad t61 brightness resets

Hey there pszet0,

I found another thread with a similar issue to your own. His solution was to update four specific drivers, and the machine then started to save the power plan settings. Here is a link to the driver page and a list of driver's that he referenced. As always, ensure you back up before starting on this path. This may be path you can take to finding resolution.

Start here as I believe these will be more likely involved:
Power Management Driver
Your Applicable Display Driver

And then these:
HotKey Features Integration Driver
System Interface Driver

On my IBM Thinkpad T43, the brightness controls no longer work. Pressing Fn+Home/End is supposed to lower/raise the setting, and it used to, but no longer does. It's also supposed to lower or raise the brightness depending on what power it is running on, but no longer does that, either.

I tried restoring to my original XP image, where it worked fine, but it still does nothing. Given that it used to work anywhere (BIOS, etc) I'm beginning to think it has nothing to do with XP's setup, but I can't seem to find a BIOS setting that makes a difference, either.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Joe

Hi! I have a Thinkpadx250 running Windows 8 and I've noticed that when I switch tabs within the browser, or even change programs, or minimise things to the desktop, the brightness changes. Its not automatically, it comes after a few seconds and pulses, almost, darkening or brightening each post. Now, I've been in the power settings and I have disabled "Adaptive Brightness" all across the board. I've also turned off Display Power Saving Technology in the Intel Graphics Control Panel, however, this problem persists while plugged in, and there's no option to change it while plugged in. I also do not have the Advanced options in the Intel Graphics Control Panel, as I have found that solution already, and it is unavailable to me. I'd really like to get this resolved as honestly, it gives me a bit of a headache,

Hi, Just to preface this post:  I have scoured this forum and Google for a solution, but none of the proposed solutions seem to work. I have a ThinkPad T500 (2081, CTO) that I bought in 2009 that came with Windows Vista. Hi, I have a Thinkpad E550 and the built in display brightness looks too low. I have the latest video drivers for Windows 10 64bit. I first check the laptop brightness control typing the F6 key wich also have the brightness function, and the brightnes is set to 100%. Check with Windows 10 Setting App and also brightness is set to 100%. I check the battery/power setting and the "Enable adaptive brightnes" it off. Also check with the Lenovo Settings Metro App and the "Enable dynamic brightness control" is off. The resolution is set to native resolution in the case of this unit 1920x1080. Any ideas???

On my very new ThinkPad Twist (230u) the screen brightness changes randomly, at least when I select the power option 'Energy Saver' which is set as default. The brightness turns a little bit darker and turns back to full brightness again after a while. If I set the power option to 'Balanced' this issue has not occurred yet. Does someone else have this issue? Any solution yet?

Answer:Brightness changes randomly on Thinkpad Twist

the ThinkPad Twist has an ambient light sensor built in. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-Knowledge-Base/Random-changes-in-screen-brightness-every-f...

I have an "issue" with my Yoga.It used to be that when I turned down brightness completely the screen would go black because there was no more backlight at all. However it now seems that even completely turned down there is still some backlight left meaning i can't turn off the screen completely. I really like being able to turn off the screen quickly, for example to save battery when rendering or when I leave the laptop unatended and don't want people to see what im working on. Is there any way to get the old behaviour back? Not quite sure what caused the change in but im guessing some kind of driver update... Running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga Brightness turn off backlight

Usually Intel graphics drivers don't have "backlight off" as the lowest setting, so in principle, this was a 'bug' that was 'fixed'.You could roll back your graphics driver and see if it brings back this functionality. I'd just pin something like LCDoff to the taskbar though.

Hi ! First of all, sorry if I make some mistakes, I'm a french speaker  I own a Lenovo for some month now, and I'm completly satisfied with this computer. In Januar, the mainboard burned for a reason that I can't explain. New problems appeared directly after the reparation. Two days ago, I decided tocompletly reinstall Windows 7, after deleting all the memory of the SSD. All functions very well, apart one small thing : the brightness control (fn+Home/End) does not work well. Actually, it does like this : Increment : 0-4-7-9-10-11-12-13-14-15Decrement : 15-14-13-12-11-10-9-8-6-3-0 It is not a real problem in itself, but it is quite annoying when you want to adjust the brightness confortably... Thanks !

Answer:[Thinkpad T410s] - Problem with brightness control

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Did it use to work without irregular increments before? If so, then verify whether all drivers are installed from lenovo, for instance video, Power Manager/Management, Hotkey Features etc, and not through Windows Update:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/migr-74582.html

Run TVSU alternatively:-http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73695

I have seen it mentioned by another user in L series and Value line board, my guess is that lenovo has changed something for new systems because my T400's on-screen display works fine and doesn't have this behavior.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I can't adjust the screen brightness on my X250 at all. I have Windows 7 on it. When I press + and - the slider thing shows up, and it goes up and down, but nothing happens. It's really bright and have already been like this for weeks. The colour is slightly wrong as well. Restarting, shutting down or closing and opening the lid does nothing. It got stuck after I disconnected it from my docking station, so I tried connecting it and disconnecting again - nothing. I've updated Windows and nothing there as well. I'm getting really frustrated since nothing works.. Is there something to do? Please help..

Hello ThinkPad-Community, I have a sporadic issue with the brightness control, thats mean sometimes I start my laptop from standby and the control with "Fn+Pos1 or FN+END" doesn't work. There is no reaction and no on screen display progress bar. Also in the default Windows 7 energy settings is no control of the display brightness possible. If the issue exist, only a complete reboot of the ThinkPad solve the issue. I've also found some discussions about this in the internet but no solution helps realy. NOTE: My Laptop has a complete clean install of Windows 7 and all drivers was installed by Lenovo System Updater.Does anybody have the same issue? Thanks for your help

Answer:Brightness control issue on ThinkPad X220

This is an on & off issue that creeps up on various Thinkpads. It was very notorious on my X120e, but it doesn't happen on my X220 at all, and I sleep/resume it all the time...It's a bug they can't seem to correct.

How to turn up brightness in ubuntu of Thinkpad sl500?? ? I have already use FN+home/end But it's not enough bright .how can i get more brightness in Ubuntu like in Vista It's good in vista. even the maximum level of bright is still too dark.Message Edited by Phinux on 01-07-2009 02:32 AM

Answer:How to turn up brightness in ubuntu of Thinkpad sl500??

On Ubuntu your brightness setting will be reversed (at least they were for me and many in the ubuntu forums). So setting it to the darkest setting should make it the brightest. Besides that, Commen Consensus is, that the SL-Series is unusable for Ubuntu as the thinkpad specific drivers wont work (due to SL being ideapads from the hardware. At least that is what I read)

I have a brand new Thinkpad Edge E425 and the brightness buttons stopped working. Not only that, the brightness won't adjust in the power control either. I uninstalled and re-installed the power station program and the drivers and the brightness buttons worked for one day and then stopped again. However, when it was working the graphic wouldn't come up. It almost seems like the power station isn't working at all because I set it to save battery power and the time my battery lasts doesn't change.

Answer:Thinkpad Edge E425 Brightness stopped working

So I uninstalled and re-installed Power Manager and drivers and it is working again, for now...

When the laptop starts up, when Reading the BIOS the brightnes on the screen is high and types/letters are like "bold and not very clear".Later, when Windows starts up the screen  has a high britghness, the types/letters are not clear, the color is saturated (it is difficult even to see the mouse pointer on the screen). The laptop intenal second screen (the laptop is dual screen W701ds) works ok.- Ckecked: The power management/plan (is ok).- BIOS is updated- Checking the video card is ok, with PC-Doctor and Windows identify the right card  (nvidia Quadro FX 3800M 1GB).- If using an external monitor, you can see the screen perfectly (video card works ok). ¿Anyone has had been same problem?

Answer:ThinkPad W701ds: High brightness at startup BIOS

Hi, fjdiazal

From what you've described, it sounds like the LCD panel of the main monitor is starting to go bad and will need to be replaced to solve this issue. This is especially true since both an external monitor and the secondary LCD are unaffected. I would recommend contacting Lenovo Support at +34-917-147-833 and discussing a LCD panel replacement with them.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I recently purchased a ThinkPad X240 with Windows 7 installed, however the display brightness functions don't seem to be working. When I press F5/F6 the display stays at the same brightness. Am I missing something or is it defective on my system? The F5/F6 seems to work properly for what they're supposed to do in Windows so the keys seem to be working fine...

Answer:display brightness broken or missing? ThinkPad X240

Hi Dimm0k,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Display brightness on your ThinkPad X240.

How do you check if the brightness key (F5/F6) is working or not, because to use that key you have to simultaneously press Fn+F5/Fn+F6, then to if it is not working then check it in BIOS mode once.

Uninstall the current graphic driver from Control panel ? program & feature option and update all the drivers and application from thinkvantage system update utility.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

When I'm watching any sort of video on my laptop, whether it is Netflix, YouTube, or something on VLC, I have noticed a slight change in the coloring and brightness of the video, usually when there are subtitles, annotations, or even when I mouse over the screen. It goes from a darker coloring to a much brighter coloring and it is very distracting. It is extremely irritating to me and I have scoured the settings on each website and on the control panel of the computer and I can't seem to find a solution. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone else have a solution? I can't stand to watch videos like this and this laptop is brand new. I've included pictures of the difference in coloring for reference. The first photo is normal and the second picture is the color change when I mouse over the screen. It may not seem like a big deal, but while watching a video it is annoying! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

ThinkPad T61 (7665-11U) display problem. The display always appears after boot. However, occationally the display suffers either of two problems, seemingly with no cause: 1) "flutter"-- where bightness quickly cycles, alternates from side-to-side; or,2) it will go dark--the image is barely visible and the laptop responds to input (mouse, keyboard, etc). Either problem is intermittant. The display works normally otherwise. The fan is operational and the laptop does not run "hot". In fact, either problem cannot be induced by:-  open/closing the display, or pivoting hte hinges;-  gentle flexing of the laptop case;-  pressure on the keyboard and palm rests.. This is a hardware problem--not a software problem. I opened the laptop and inspected relevent ribbon connections, which appeared normal. A keyword search of this forum and others reveals all variety of display issues afflicting ThinkPad laptops, but I find no anecdotes identical to mine. Anyone experience either or both of these problems--and successfully identy their cause and repair them?

Answer:ThinkPad T61 Display Problems -- Brightness Flutter, or Goes Dark

Welcome to the forum!

The only foolproof way of testing the machine in question would be with another complete, *known good* LCD assembly. That would point to either a screen or graphics card deficiency...

My bet would be along the lines of a graphics card going haywire once the machine warms up, but it's really difficult to say from a distance...

Good luck.

Answer:ThinkPad E535 win7 fresh install NO brightness control

System:Thinkpad Edge e535AMD A6-4400mWIndows 7 Pro I'm having a similar problem.  I haven't reinstalled windows, but lost my brightness controls after the first shutdown.  Oddly, when plugged in to an AC adapter, the screen dimmed to the lowest setting; when unplugged and running on battery, it went to max brightness.  In both cases it's unadjustable. Tried: control panel > hardware and sound > power options > change plans settings...there is a slider to adjust brightness. No effect. Clicked  'advanced plan settings' button on this page, then display, then screen brightness.  tried higher and lower settings. No effect. any help is appreciated.  If i find a solution I will post it here

Answer:Brightness problem in ThinkPad Edge E420 & E520 Series.

I understand your frustration, have you checked to see if your BIOS is up-to-date?

There is a BIOS update that came out in Nov 2012, it includes a fix for the issue of brightness keys (F7 & F8).

Please let me know how this goes and if you have any questions.

My workplace has puchased 100 T540P laptops and I'm installing Win 8.1 Ent.It features an intel 4600 HD graphics. When I press the brightness hotkey to dim the screen the screen turns off. If I press - four times to dim I need to press + four times to get the screen back on. I've checked for solutions but none have solved this problem. If I delete the driver it automatically reinstalls!!! Any ideas?
