Preferred Solution: l540 + 250GB Samsung 840 Evo

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I bough a 250 GB Samsung SSD EVO 850.I got a Lenovo X201 computer. My SSD is not recognized by the MAGICIAN Samsung programso i cannot clone my HDD to my Samsung SSD. Please HELP me !!!

Answer:Samsung SSD 850 250GB not recognized by Lenovo X201 Samsung Magician Program

Hi, nocoin, and welcomeIs the SSD installed into the main bay of laptop or external USB box?Samsung Magician application is a tool not for cloning operation. Use Samsung Data Migration Software intead. It's a simple, free of charge, reduction of the Acronis True Image Home application. Then, after installing SSD into the laptop, use Magician app for disk management. Also, you might use another software for the cloning:Clonezilla, Macrium. As well Acronis ATIH full version (I'm not sure whether trial version supports entire drive cloning).

I've been looking at some of the features in Samsung Magician, and ran the Benchmark test twice. Both times I got very high scores, above the max listed in the program for all 4 tests. I have the drive set to MAXIMUM RELIABILITY. Just wondering about the scores reliability.

Scores in Parentheses are Samsung 's listed maximum high:

Sequential Read
549 mb (540)
Seq write
532mb (520)
Random read
97442 (97000)
Random write
70189 (66000)

Answer:Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb

Benchmarks are artificial at best [and a benchmark from the mfg is tailored to that particular piece of hardware] I would think you would get different results using a another benchmark program such as ATTO.

In short do not put too much emphasis on any given benchmark. Modern ssd drives are reliable and it should last for quite a while so I would not worry about the drive.

Hi,

Just purchased a new Samsung SP2514 250 gig hdd and XP can only see 32239mb.

Tried using samsung's drive overlay to install xp, but gave up + uninstalled it -(the drive overlay).

I booted from the Xp cd + installed but XP only sees 32....gig's.

I have enabled big LBA by using EnableBigLba from www.48bitlba.com to no avail.

From searching through the forums, I see that a BIOS update may be necessary.

Do I also need to update my motherboard + chipset?

If so, are reliable updates available free on the net?

Any step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance

This is just what is says. A fresh win 10 install on a new SSD. Do not explain to me about cloning.

To date I've upgraded the BIOS (UEFI) on a ASUS P67 Performance Gen3 motherboard. I've changed the SATA Mode to AHCI. I can see the drive in the BIOS.

The Windows installer the page where it lists the drive partitions. I only see one drive partio

Drive 0 Partition 1 239.9GB 232.8 GB Primary

I get the error
Windows can't be installed on drive 0 particion 1. (Show Detailes)

The New button is greyed out and when I select next I get

We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.

Hello hiltonr92 and welcome to the forums. See if this will help Windows 10 - Clean Install

Are you installed in UEFI Mode? If so, when you boot from the USB drive use the entry that says UEFI and the name of your USB. If not in UEFI, boot from the name of your USB without UEFI in front of it. Delete all partitions on the drive until it says unallocated and then click the 'NEW" button. The installer will create all the necessary partitions. I hope that helps.

Hello and thank you in advance for your help!

I bought a new Samsung 850 EVO 250GB for my old aging computer and this happened:

1. Cloned my old c: drive to the ssd, replaced it and everything went fine for a while until i started getting an infinite loop.
Windows wouldn't boot. Did a registry recovery via command line but my windows installation went to hell to forcing me to reinstall.

2. From this point everything went to hell, and after multiple windows reinstalls here's some of what happens:
- Windows installs but errors immediately follows;
- Some windows updates install but eventually start failing until windows update fails completely;
- Windows installs, updates install but eventually windows fails to load and enters repair mode claiming startup errors;
- Programs stop working for no apparent reason, some examples: Browsers won't run, file associations disappear (class registration errors), explorer;
- Driver problems with peripherals,
- File system corruption errors;
- I got situations where the computer would get stuck in a reboot/system restore/repair loop
- Automatic and manual restore points disappear making it impossible to restore to an earlier time;
- Changing the sata mode to IDE instead of AHCI seems to solve some of these issues but eventually the system locks up, the hdd light stays on, and after a reset the ssd doesn?t get recognized at startup. I have to power off to get it back but it?s the same all over again.

I replaced a Kingston 128GB SSD with a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD. Cloned Kingston SSD to new Samsung SSD using Acronis True Image.

Now, when I boot, it sits there for 30 seconds flashing the hard drive light blinking then proceeds to boot normally. All BIOS settings are default.

Hardware details in Specs.

Booting from the 128GB SSD was fine, no obvious delays.

Any idea what might be causing this? Could the new SSD be defective?

Answer:30 second boot delay with new 250GB Samsung SSD

Hey Rich,

Since it's for 30 seconds, it sounds like the time it waits before the default OS runs automatically. You might check to see if that may be it.

Hi guys,

I was going to do clean install Windows 10 but there was an issue of GPT so I decided to convert into MBR. I didnt selected the volume by mistake and clean the whole disk.

Before there was 2 partitions

C: 150GB
D: 88GB

Now there is only 1 partition

C: 238GB

I have very important data on D drive and I am very confused right now.

Moreover, its still GPT and I also checked on Lupu Linux maybe if its on RAW but its not connecting through usb case.

Regards.

has anyone installed a Samsung 850 EVO in a dell 3542. ive seen older posts on net where people were unsuccessful. going crazy researching this drive. and if u did get it installed. was it WOW thats so much faster?

Answer:anyone install samsung 850 evo 250gb in 3542 laptop?

Whether you can use one depends on which version of the system you have.
One version has a Celeron CPU (N30xx) and an embedded 32G eMMC drive - this one CANNOT  be upgraded to a 2.5" EVO SSD.
The higher line model has an i3 CPU and comes with a 500 G hard drive.  That model CAN be upgraded to a 2.5" EVO SSD.
Yes, the EVO will be immensely faster than a conventional hard drive.

My sons got me a Samsung 840 EVO SSD for my birthday . . . and it ROCKS! (That's right . . . I be the Dad . . . :major). Never used an SSD before and been wanting to try one out but I couldn't justify the expense at this time.

I was able to clone my existing HDD to the SSD with no trouble. The speed of this thing is amazing all by itself, but Samsung has a RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) setting in its provided software that allows the use of up to one gigabyte of system RAM to use as a high-speed cache. This seems to more than double the sequential read and write of the SSD. I'm astonished! So far, so good.

On to my question . . . I've been putting various OS folders on my old HDD (all the Library files; Documents, Videos, Pictures, Downloads, etc.) but I was wondering if anyone could suggest any other files that would be wise to move from the SSD to my regular platter drive? I've researched this issue, and there is so much contradictory information out there I'm not sure how to proceed . . . so I came home to MG to ask

Thanks

Answer:Samsung 840 EVO 250GB Solid State Drive

I think I answered at least one of my own questions - It's apparently not wise to move the AppData folder to another drive besides the OS drive. I can't really think of any other caches or folders that would make sense to move.

I've moved I.E. temp files, all my document Libraries, and put a good few of my most used utility programs on my HDD. This seems to be taking some of the pressure off the SDD. I've had it installed and running since May 27th and have only written .17 TB to it. I intend to keep the games I am currently playing on the SSD. Though, from the testing I've seen done on this drive, longevity doesn't seem to be an issue with this model.

Ran another performance test on the drive after a reboot, and the Random Write (IOPS) results are insane! Top is the SSD of course, and I ran a comparison test on the 500GB Seagate Barracuda drive that had been my OS drive. SSD FTW!

Hello,

I have the following:

- Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1
- Intel i7-5820K Extreme Hex Core CPU Processor (3.30GHz, 15MB Cache, 28 Lanes)
- Samsung 950 PRO NVMe M.2 256 GB Solid State Drive
- Asus STRIX GTX970-DC2OC-4GD5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 Graphics Card

I have only the Asus Graphics Card in the PCIEX16_1 which is running at PCI-E 3.0 16x as expected. I have removed the USB3.1 card that comes with this motherboard for testing purposes so I literally only have the Graphics card installed.

The board has an onBoard M.2 x4 Rev 3 connector which the Samsung 950 PRO is installed into.

I believe this connector should allow 32Gb/sec bandwidth (since it uses PCI-E 3.0 x 4) - please note there is also an optional card where you can add the M.2 (or a second M.2) into a PCI Express slot - I'm NOT using this card, just the onBoard connector.

Samsung Magician says the following:
- Controller: Samsung NVMe Controller (Driver Ver: 1.4.17)
- PCIe Slot: PCI Express Root Port 1 - 2F03
> Link Speed Cur: 4Gbps, Max: 8Gbps
> Link Width Cur: x4, Max: x4
> Bandwidth Cur: 16Gbps, Max: 32Gbps

The performance data also suggests this - the read speed should be a lot higher but seems to be reduced, whereas write speed which is a lower number is over the actual "Upto Speed".

It appears as if my SSD is running at PCI-E 2.0 speeds? The bandwidth is being throttled. Any ideas how I make it go to 32Gbps instead of 16Gbps?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Asus X99-Deluxe/U3.1 + Samsung 950 Pro (250GB) M.2 Speed Issues?

Believe it or not, I've just stumbled across the solution.

I am using high FSB Corsair Dominator sticks and had them using an XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) - essentially my memory was overclocked.

I thought I'd try running in "normal" mode ie. stock settings and when I checked, the Samsung Magician is now showing as 32Gbps!!

The motherboard must sacrifice something to run the Memory at the higher clock speed which means it can't run the M.2 at PCI-E 3 and has to drop it to PCI-E 2.

Worth baring in mind for anyone else trying to achieve these elusive 32Gbps speeds

Question: Fan Noise on L540

Hi There, I've recently purchased  a  new Thinkpad L540 with windows 7. I've run System Update and updated all the software and drivers including BIOS. Everything has been running fine. (maybe an issue with the speed on the wireless card but not tested properly yet) Anyway - I'm having a problem with the fan. The machine basically runs silent while I'm web browsing and even typing up this post, however, every 30-60 seconds the fan will speed up quite a bit so it's rather noisy for 5-10 seconds, then the machine goes silent again. I'm aware the temperature is monitored and that the fan speeds up and slows down depending on Temp/Load, but this doesn't seem normal to me, anyone else had this issue who can suggest a fix? It's really annoying!! Could the temp sensor be faulty I wonder? I've owned several T series machines in the past and always used even more thinkpads for work but not had this issue. This machine is finally retiring my old T400 which is still going strong. Thanks.

Answer:Fan Noise on L540

Have you tried TPFanControl to monitor the fan behavior and CPU temperatures? What happens if you control it with TPFanControl? Just to rule out a bug in the EC controller of the BIOS or ruling out a hardware malfunction of the fan.

So here's my problem. I used to have an SSD from Kingston on my ThinkPad L540 but due some issues with that SSD, i for the moment use the standard 1TB WD HDD the laptop was shipped with. First of all the boot now takes quite a long time and second after the sign in page on win 10, the screen will be black for a moment, for about 20 seconds or so. Is it a issue with the HDD, Win 10 or with the laptop ? Btw the HDD gets also quite hot.

Would be thnkful for any help. Thank you in advance!

Answer:Lenove L540

Post it to Youtube. Update your drivers and BIOS? (I don't recommend running the BIOS update with other updates. Use the bootable CD if possible, otherwise make sure Windows is stable and not running anything that can interfere with the update.)

Hi. I have an L540.  Up until today, when I closed the lid, within a few seconds it would go to sleep and the cover LED would slowly go off and on.  Great.  Today I closed the lid and the LED didn't fade in and out.  After several minutes I opened the lid, and the display was off, the power button was lit, and I couldn't get the display to come back on.  Now when I click "Sleep" from the shutdown menu, I get the same behavior.  The display goes dark, but the power button LED stays on and it doesn' t appear to go to sleep.  I went to the power options through the control panel.  When I changed the lid closing behavior to "Do nothing", when I closed and re-opened the lid, it did nothing.  When I changed it from "do nothing" back to "sleep", I get the dark display again, but it doesn't sleep.  To get out of this state, the only thing that seems to work is to press and hold the power button until it shuts down, then restart it. I didn't change anything today, so I'm puzzled.  Is it possible that an automatic Windows update changed something? Thanks!

Answer:L540 won't go to sleep

Hi Darrenwetzel,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not going to sleep mode on your ThinkPad L540.

Yes, Windows update might have updated some drivers, mainly check with graphic driver. Try with uninstalling the graphic driver and download the latest version from support site.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Question: W541 vs L540

Hello, I'm considering buying a W541 or L540.. Advantages of W541: 32gb ram, dedicated GPU Advantages of L540: Lighter, Cheaper  I want to know also if the CPU and GPU of the above devices are removable. According to sarbin, "CPU = socketedGPU = soldered Please see page 11 of the FRU BOM: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/w541_frubom_20150202.pdffor a CPU parts list." I want to get same info for L540, Thanks a lot!!

Answer:W541 vs L540

cpu is socketed. I believe all the L540 machines have integrated graphics, which means no GPU at all, but in general, none of the ThinkPads will have socketed GPUs

Question: L540 PXE boot

Just some unimportant info regarding Lenovo Thinkpad L540!!!! I have setup a L540 package in my SCCM 2010 and was trying to PXE boot my new Lenovo L540. To do this I hit "F12" during startup and when connected to the server I hit "F12" again as stated. - But nothing happens!!!!! WHY???? - Because on the new L540 the system dosnīt recognize "F12" as "F12" so you get a time out instead and the system starts over.Instead, when connected to the server, you should press "fn" + "F12")

Question: L540 HDD height?

What's the height of the HDD bay in the L540, 7mm or 9.5mm? I'm considering getting one, but since the original HDD is one of those terribly slow 5400 RPM disks, I would replace it immediately for a 7200 RPM disk. The ones I've found are 9.5mm high.

Answer:L540 HDD height?

Hi Wamiduku,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The documents related to Lenovo ThinkPad L540 states that it has been shipped with a 7mm or 9.5mm. You can manually measure the HDD height by taking it out.

If you can private message me the serial number and MTM number of your device, I can check the specifications with which the system was shipped.

Best regards,
Mithun.

Question: L540 keyboard help

I have a new L540 with a numeric pad on the keyboard. Above the numeric keypad there are 4 keys with the symbols calculator, padlock, globe, and folder. These keys don't seem to be documented anywhere, but their use becomes obvious when you press them. However, the folder key appears to do the same thing as Fn-F12: open a My Computer folder.  Is there some way to reprogram either of these keys to do something different, or am I not understanding the complete function of them?

Bill

Answer:L540 keyboard help

I have a similar question.  The lock key and folder key above the numeric keypad have switched functions on me (the folder key locks the laptop and vice versa).  I'm not sure how this happened or of a way to get it back to how it should be.  The calculator and globe keys work fine.

System came with 1.65 BIOS version. Updated to 1.73 that is available on Lenovo site. BIOS update went fine. Now when system boots up it always wants to go to "boot menu". If I click the hard drive it will come right back to the boot menu. Interestingly if I go into Lenovo diagnostics start the hard drive test, cancel the test, and reboot; the system will then boot into Windows just fine. If I restart after I've been using the system it will boot up fine. However if the system has been in sleep mode or off for an extended time I get the boot menu. Verified all BIOS settings with support. New HDD was sent to resolve issue, however the same thing is going on with a brand new drive.  Rolled back BIOS version to 1.65 and the laptop still is doing the same thing. Support seems baffled and is ready to have me send it in for depot repair. Anyone ever heard of this happening before?

Answer:L540 keeps going to "boot menu"

Same here on 2 L540. I replaced motherboard on first one. waiting for part for second one. I disabled all secury stuff, same thing.  L540 wont boot anything. Usb, cdrom bootable, hdd... nothing. come back on boot menu.

I'm considering building an external GPU setup for my laptop (thinkpad L540), wanted to check if anyone had done it. I saw it listed on techinferno's list of candidate systems, so I'm assuming it is possible. Does the L540's PCI slot allow for this sort of thing (or might there be another way of doing it?)? I guess my main concern is that there's some aspect of that connection that won't support an eGPU and this whole thing would be a waste. Whether you've done it or not, any insight is appreciated!

miniDP will carry sound. There is no special Lenovo cable, any miniDP to HDMI will do. These cables all follow the same standards, as long as they don't have physical defect then they all should all be fine.

Hi everyone, I am trying to add a second HDD to my L540 using a caddy for the Ultrabay. The primary HDD is a Samsung 128GB SSD, 2,5", attached to the internal SATA3 port. The OS is  on the internal disk, and for various reasons I have no way to change this (why would I, anyway?).The interesting part comes when I insert the second disk and boot the machine, the boot manager chain (GRUB -> Smartcard login on a mini Linux system -> GRUB4DOS -> Windows)  fails to load windows and displays a blank screen. The reason is that the internal disk is seen by Windows and Linux alike to be attached to Bus Number 4, Target Id 0, LUN0, and the second disk is on Bus Number 0, Target Id 0, LUN0. Which basically means that the second disk is enumerated _before_ the internal disk, and the boot manager chain does not find the Windows OS that should be booted. Screenshots from Windows Device Manager: I played around with my own GRUB4DOS settings but I cannot make the system accept that the internal disk is the first disk. (The second disk works fine when I hot plug it after Windows boot but this is not a permanent solution...) Q: What makes the OSes (and the BIOS, I assume, which I can only view but not change due to a BIOS supervisor password) think that the internal disk should be enumerated second? Confused... Thank you for any insight!

my lumia 540 getting heated quickly for 4 minutes talk. recently had a video chat using skype, really felt that taken phone from a owen. is there any solution to this ? is it safe to the device if it gets over heated?

Answer:[L540] Overheating quickly?.

One of the most common causes of heating is high power usage from the battery (where it's the battery that's heating up). One of the most common battery drainers are the screen, the camera and the antennas (more specifically, the one for mobile data). Video chat uses all of these three phone components. However, you may still be able to minimize the heating by:
1. connecting to Wi-Fi instead of Mobile data, and then ensure that your Wi-Fi signal is "strong";
2. use a lower screen brightness during the video call;
3. keep the back of the phone ventilated during the call, i.e. do not lay it flat on a surface or enclosed in a phone case.
Generally, some amount of heating is acceptable, but something that heats up beyond 42 degrees Celsius is unsafe for any portion of the human body. There's no need, however, to measure if it's exactly 42 degrees already - if it's painfully hot, then it's harmful. Heating will also be harmful to the battery of the device, shortening it's usable life. There have also been incidents of exploding rechargeable batteries in much older devices... though that's unlikely to happen with our more modern Windows Phones. Therefore, some heating is safe, but over heating is not safe.

Hello Lenovo Community,  Can someone help me with this decision:  Should I get a ThinkPad L540, 15.60'', Full HD, Intel Core i5-4210M, 4 GB DDR3-RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4600, 500GB HDDfor 679 Swiss Franks (715 USD) (with additional Lenovo 4 GB DDR3L-RAM: 785 USD) or ThinkPad E550, 15.60'', Full HD, Intel Core i5-5200U, 8 GB DDR3L-RAM, Intel HD Graphics 5500, 500GB HDD with 8 GB SSD-Cachefor 749 Swiss Franks (790 USD) or Should I rather wait for new, upcoming releases? I am not really in a hurry. Purposes are programming, surfing and other day to day use. I am curious about what the pros and cons are for either!I don't think the Touchpad/Trackpad is a big deal for me, as I am new to notebooks in general.  Thanks in advanceMike

Answer:L540 vs. E550 vs. Wait ?!

Both are great offers. But you may want to get another SODIMM of 4GB or 8GB of RAM to have at least 8GB of RAM in your computer to make it last longer. You can order these modules anywhere. The quality of the ThinkPad L-series are better than the E-series. The parts are also slightly better if you plan on keeping it longer or use a newer Windows version.Personally I think the E550 is the best one to start if you don't want to upgrade the RAM and start without headaches. You can also consider upgrading the warranty of the machine when you have it. I usually get a on-site warranty of 3-4 years, just in case.

Of course, system is not starting because of the broken motherboard so starting it and checking under some app is out of the question. Thanks.

Hello, Ive got problem with my new ThinkPad L540. Problem is with booting and occurs random. Laptop, if boot proper, works fine, shutdowns also fine. Problem description:Laptop is off. I press start button and StartButton LED and Fn key LED turn on, but screen is black (dont even lighted black). Fan works for a while.Wait 15 seconds (nothing change) and turn it off by pressing start button. Then try again - LEDs again light up, fan works, CD works. Everything turn off for a while and then start again (itself) and laptop boots properly. Sometimes it does not boot after second time but third, fourth...Sometimes it boots ok at once... Problem occurs from the beginning of using but occurs less often. Now almost everytime I have to turn on my laptop two times (first not boot, then second works) Platform: Lenovo ThinkPad L540 - Core i5 4200M / 15,6 Full HD / 8192 / 128 SSD / Intel HD 4600 / DVD / Windows 7 Pro OS, drivers were preinstalled by seller. Hi, I recently discovered this issue after an update from Lenovo. - When I first turn on the machine and the Windows login page appears, the password box begins to fill up with text as if someone is holding down a key. This continues to happen until I click the password box with my mouse. - I am unable to type "Shift+Y" - In any and every text box or text editor, the number "6" keeps being printed. This is happening while I'm typing this message and it is very annoying. I think the issue may be that the last Lenovo update seemed to have failed. I just don't know how to fix it. The computer is still under a two year warrently.

I am very disappointed in my L540 design quality.  It comes with the ExpressCard slot, but no dummy or door on the slot.  Therefore, I have a huge gaping hole in the side of my laptop.  I thought this was a manufacturing defect, so I took my laptop to the local authorized Lenovo repair facility.  They contacted their higher ups at Lenovo and then told me that it should be this way.  I can not believe that Lenovo would sell a laptop with a massive hole in the side without any way of covering it.  The laptop was also missing a dummy card in the SD card slot.  I was able to fix this by putting in one of my spare SD cards. I can't believe Lenovo would ship a laptop with such a gaping hole in the side of it. Has anyone else found this problem? Corey

Don't see it as a problem just buy a cheapo 54 express card and stick it in,look at the massive vents and lots of dust gets in there.

I was chatting with a Lenovo rep yesterday and I asked which 15" ThinkPad model he would rank right behind the T540p in terms of features and durability, the L540, E540 (not released yet) or S540 (not released yet) and he answered the L540 because he said they have similar construction.  After looking at the comparison chart on the bottom of the Lenovo ThinkPad page I can see that the L540 has the same military spec testing for durability but without the roll cage technology in the T540p.  The T540p also has a backlit keyboard but the L540 keyboard is not backlit.  The only option available in the L540 that's not available in the T540p is the 16gb NGFF/M.2 micro hard drive and there's no charge for it.  The ports in both models are almost identical including VGA and mini DisplayPort.  They both have 4 USB ports.  The L540 has 1 USB 3.0 port and 3 USB 2.0 ports and the T540p has 2 USB 3.0 port and 2 USB 2.0.  The tech specs on the L540 page doesn't mention anything about an always on USB 3.0 port but the Lenovo Product Spec Reference for Notebooks says that 1 USB 3.0 port is always on.  The tech specs on the T540p page says that 1 USB 3.0 port is always on but the Lenovo Product Spec Reference for Notebooks says that 1 USB 2.0 port is always on.  I'm assuming that the Lenovo Product Spec Reference for Notebooks is correct but who knows?  There's so many missing, incorrect and contradictory all over... I purchased an L540 with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed in 2014.  Currently I have version 6.1 (Build 7601 Service Pack 1), and am NOT having any technical issues.  However, my SquareTrade extended warranty expires soon (in October), and I have been wondering if I should upgrade to Windows 10 (probably along with the Classic Shell app).  Just browsing the forum, I see a number of posts that reflect various issues with upgrading to Windows 10, and can't really tell if those issues have been resolved by now.  I know that Microsoft plans to support Windows 7 Professional until January 2020, by which time by laptop will be 6 years old.  Any advice on whether it is worthwhile to upgrade and comments on the cost/difficulty of the process?

So I got 2x8gb of RAM, my L440 came with 4. I took out the 4gb slot and put the first 8gb stick on there. My problem is that I can't put on the second RAM stick. The RAM pins dont slide in like the first one. I try to lightly push it in but It doesnt slide in the slot. Am I doing something wrong? Where exactly are the pins supposed to go?

Answer:L440/L540 second ram slot

Hello Mui, welcome to the community,

there are two slots, one on top of the other, on the L440.  When inserting RAM you need to ensure that you initially position and insert the module at an angle of about 20° to the slot and then push it down into place.  See p74 (pdf p80) of the Harware Maintenance Manual.

If needs require I'm sure you will loads of video tutorials on YouTube.  And please don't forget to let us know how you got on.

I have a Lenovo L540 ThinkPad.  I thought it came with a webcam but the little cirlce at the top is covered with what looks like what would be at the front of a speaker or something.  does this mean there is no webcam built in?  It doesnt look like a lens and I cant find a "webcam" icon anymore in the control panel or desktop or anywhere else.  Thoughts?

Some of them do not have a camera installed, you should check the invoice or the label on the box for features included in the notebook you purchased. You can returned it to the store and get another one that has the features you wanted. Good luck.

Hi, I just bought a brand new Thinkpad L540 as well as a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB. I am not skilled in these sort of things, but hopefully upgrading to the SSD will be doable. The thinkpad comes with Windows 7 Professional, but with Windows 8 Pro as recovery OS.  Should I just replace the HDD with the SSD before I ever start the computer, and then start the computer after the swap. Will everything launch as normal then, and is it best to just install windows 8 immediately, or install W7 first, and then install W8 as recovery OS afterwards?  Or should I first install windows 7 and then clone unto the SSD, to avoid missing any important drivers etc.? What are the biggest errors to avoid? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

I'd suggest creating recovery disks from the existing install - that option will be visible under Control Panel - then removing the hard drive and doing a fresh install on the SSD from these recovery disks.

I am trying to 'dual display' my L540 to my TV. I have a mini dvi port (or whatever it is!) converter plugged into that port with an HDMI lead plugged into that and then into an HDMI socket on my TV. I assumed this would then be dead easy to just select dual monitors or similar and the laptop output would be duplicated on the TV. However I'm not getting anything on the TV. Is there some other setting I need to change other than in Control Panel>All Control Panel Items>Display>Change Display Settings? Under Muliple Displays I select Duplicate these displays and Apply but all that happens is that the display resolution on the laptop goes really big ie nothing appears on my TV. It feels like the laptop is not even detecting anything attached to the mini DVI port - would this be driver related or is there something else I'm overlooking? Really want to fix this as I'm hoping to be able to play Youtube vids (with sound) from the laptop through the TV and maybe also Amazon movies. Any help gratefully received!!

I have this laptop setup in a desk with external mouse/keyboard. When i decide to take for an offshore trip wihtout the external keyboard/mouse, I was not able to login due to my laptop password has 2 letters "L". All of the other letters are working my option was to use the on-screen keyboard to login.

Answer:Letter L not working on L540

Hi ljramos,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

Is your external keyboard is working still with the letter ?L??
Is your keypad drivers are the latest version? If not please refer the link given below and download latest the drivers to your current OS.
http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l54...
Try cleaning the keypad once and check whether any foreign particle is stuck in between the keypads?
Also check in the safe mode whether the letter ?L? works?

Please let me know whether the steps helped you.
Thank you, have a good day.

Regards,
Naveen.v

Question: L540 crack in case

Anybody else having trouble with stress cracks on bottom left/right on the back of the screen? I think the crack has something to do with the hinge, because the crack is right behind the hinge. I have contacted support but they told me that "physical damage" is not coverd by warranty, even I have 2 years warranty left.

Hello.  I just purchased an L540 laptop with the Lenovo 2x2 11b/g/n M.2 wireless adapter (I did not go with the Intel card for various reasons).  I notice that downloads are incredibly slow on this thing, which is not an issue on any other device I have.  I'm wondering what could be causing this.  Thanks in advance!

I only started daily use of my L540 with Windows 7 Professional recently and am encountering a black screen sometimes when the Thinkpad has been powered on for a while and not in active use.  When I press any key, which is what I am used to doing to return the computer from sleep mode, nothing happens.  When I press the power button, sometimes the Thinkpad powers off instead.  (By the way, when I see the screen saver,  I am able to hit any key and return to an active screen.)  Please advise if I have a malfunctioning computer or if I am doing something wrong or have the wrong power settings.

Hi, I'm really struggling to find spare (Replacement) parts for my L540 laptop.  It's part no is 20AV002YUK. I've discovered that the wireless card has bluetooth but doesn't cover 5GHz. Where can I source an N or AC (the latter if possible) that supports 5GHz and has bluetooth, and is on my L540's Whitelist.  Any help appreciated. Thanks, Anthony

Answer:L540 Wireless Card Purchase

Hello and welcome,

The whitelist for your machine is it the parts list:  http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/l540_fru_bom_20140117.pdf

I think the first one listed (04W3798) is 5GHz capable based on the "agn" in the description.  I haven't been able to verify that.  There seem to be some available in the UK - eBay for instance - and reasonably priced.  I'm not recommending one source over another.

Sorry I can't confirm 5GHz.  Hopefully someone else has actually tried one and can let us know.

Z.

Answer:L540 Middle click not working

Hi Androlord,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I'm sorry to hear that middle mouse button of your Lenovo ThinkPad L540 is not working.

For the middle mouse button to work, you should enable the TrackPoint in Ultranav option.

Please download drivers from Lenovo Support page. To download the drivers, Please click on "Select Product", then in "QUICK PATH" enter L540 and select the exact model depending on the MTM number of your device. All the drivers compatible for your system would be listed.

Use Think Vantage system update which will auto detect the drivers required and will install it for you.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

I'm aware of connecting an external monitors such as a tv thru an HDMI connector but the L540 that I'm looking to buy doesn't seem to have one.  I'm not so good with the hardware tech terms (letters) to know if there is something on the L540's that would enable me to connect a tv to use as an external monitor as well as for viewing tv/movies.

Answer:L540 Can external monitor/TV be connected?

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Lenovo ThinkPad L540 comes with a VGA connector to connect the computer to a VGA-compatible video device, such as a VGA monitor. Else, you may use the mini DisplayPort connector to connect your computer to a compatible projector, external monitor, or high-definition television.

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hi guys. I recently purchased a "Lenovo Thinkpad L540". I encountered an odd WARNING when I was reading its documentation. this WARNING is as following:
________________________________________________________
Notice for users in the U.S.A.Many personal computer products and accessories contain cords, cables or wires, such as power cords or cords to connect the accessory to a personal computer. If this product has such a cord, cable or wire, then the following warning applies:WARNING: Handling the cord on this product or cords associated with accessories sold with this product will expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer, and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
________________________________________________________
I got confused! Does this mean that every time I handle or touch my power cord, I should wash my hands? I have to tell that I live in IRAN. Do you guys know anything about this warning? pls explain it for me.
thanks a lot.

Dear Community, my L540 lid cover has cracked (without any reason to do so...), as the manual suggests there are two versions for replacement: one for "slim LCD", one for the "wedge LCD". However, I can not find any hints on how to tell if I have the slim or the wedge version. The model version states "20AV-002WGE". Thanks in advance!

I just bought an L540 and was using it to view some videos that I had downloaded.  The application had a broad black band across the bottom of the screen, including a "Screen Cast" button on the left.  It shows the elapsed time on one side of the slider, and the remaining time on the other side.  I rather liked it. Last night I was presented with the Windows Media Player interface which I don't like nearly as much. Does anybody know what app this is, or how I reset it to the default.

Answer:Default media player L540

Hi Hodag,

it may be the Windows Media Center that you had used.  What I would do is right click on a file you know you have viewed using the particular application and select open with; this should offer you some choices to try.  If you find the right application next time right click on a file, select open with again and then select default program; this will set that app as the default for that file type.

I have a thinkpad L540 and I did a function (fn) and control (ctrl) key swap in Bios and use with a function lock on. Whenever I have both of these on, certain function hotkeys such as mute, lower volume, settings, and the signal/wifi hotkeys don't work. When I set the fn and control key to original, or don't use function lock, all hotkeys work fine, but I find it quite inconvenient to use my laptop without these features. I've tried to download the hotkey integration, or the power management driver, but they haven't worked. Has anyone else had these problems?or Can anyone give me any possible solutions?

Having a problem tonight with the audio for my L540. Worked fine yesterday. Built in speakers (speaker/hp) work normally. However when trying to use headphones, ear buds, etc in the 3.5mm headphone/mic jack on the side, no sound is played through the headset. The computer/driver recognizes that there is a device plugged into the jack (displays RealtekHD Audio 2nd Output in sound/volume button on the taskbar) however still no sound.  I've checked everywhere I can think (volume mixer, device properties, driver properties, apps)  and it isn't muted anywhere. In the properties, it say the device is enabled, is working, however when you "test " sound, nothing plays. While the built in speakers are selected, the "test" sound works.  I have updated the driver, rolled it back, unistalled and reinstalled the software (from lenovo website) and the problem persists.  Thinking it is a power or physical issue with the port, I tested the microphone feature in the same port. The microphone works, picks up sound and records. So there is power to and from the port. That has left me scratching my head and searching for any solutions. I have gone into all of the programs, apps and games i used and checked the audio settings, nothing is muted or off.  Has anyone experienced this issue? Better yet has anyone fixed or have any ideas how to resolve? My intuition tells me there is somewhere im not looking that holds the answer. Thanks in advance... Read more

Answer:L540: No audio from 3.5mm headphone output.

1. Open the Control Panel and look for Realtek HD Audio's control panel.2. At the right top of the window you should see one or more plugs. Then plug in and unplug your headphones, see if the headphones are detected there.

Hello, I have a L540 that I purchased in February, and I'm having trouble with the keyboard. I have the full numpad with the 4 shortcut keys above it (calc, lock, web, and folder; numbers 1-4 from left to right). When I first got the computer, the folder and lock keys were switched (i.e., pressing the folder key (number 4) locked the computer and pressing the lock key (number 2) opened a new folder). Figuring it was just a manufacturing error, I popped the keys off and switched them. That worked fine and I had no more trouble until lately. Recently I had a problem with my computer (unrelated, fixed now) that required me to use Windows 8's "reset computer" function because it wouldn't boot. That reset my computer basically back to like-new condition. I have finished installing all the Windows and Lenovo updates, and I just realized the two keys are switched again. The physical key caps are still in their correct places, however, now when I press the lock key (number 4), it opens a folder, and the folder key (number 2) locks the computer. Does anybody know why this would happen? My guess is Lenovo released a fix during the ttime my computer was down and now it is the way it should be, but I don't know. I can always switch the physical keys back, but I wanted to see what Lenovo said.
