R400 trackpoint

Question: R400 trackpoint

I have a Thinkpad R400 with Windows 7 installed. I have tried several times to activate the trackpoint with no success.I have checked in the bios screen which lists it as active (automatic) but when I check under mice in the control panel it only gives me the touch pad not the track point.I performed a driver update which gave me UntraNav but it has the track point greyed out. Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Originally, my middle trackpoint button would cause my window to scroll based on how hard I moved the nub on my keyboard(which I liked), but after making no change, it now turns my cursor into an scrolling arrow which is much harder to control. Is there any way I can get my original setting back?

For a while now, I have wondered why the virtual buttons shown in the utility http://imgur.com/Lljj1Z7 don?t function as advertised. According to the utility, I should get a left click if I depress the left are of the touchpad, a middle click if I push on the bumps, and a right click if I depress the right half of the touchpad. In my experience, I get a left click regardless of where I depress the touchpad. The only exception is when I depress the bumps in the top middle of the touchpad?when I do that, the mouse enters some weird scrolly mode where I scan scroll stuff with the trackpoint. It definitely does not emit a middle click. But, more importantly, I cannot figure out how to get trackpoint mode to emit a right click. How do I get trackpoint classic mode to work? Is there a way to downgrade the drive or use a non-lenovo branded driver to get it to behave properly? Right now, I?m relying on an external mouse just to middle click and right click. I?m using Windows 10 b10240 and, as in the post?s title, my trackpoint driver is the latest listed on Lenovo?s support site (which I think WU actually installed for me)?19.0.12.61. Why don?t the virtual buttons work and are there any other workarounds that don?t involve using a mode other than Trackpoint Classic?

Answer:T540p unable to right-click with virtual buttons in trackpoint or trackpoint classic mode 19.0.12.61

Seems to have partially fixed iteslf since Windows Update (WU) installed 19.0.16. Now the right half of my touchpad performs a right click when in TrackPad Classic mode. However, the supposed ?middle click? zone still does a weird scrolly mode instead of sending a middle click. Guess I still have to use an external mouse to accomplish a middle click when using Classic TrackPoint mode, but at least the situtaion is better than when I couldn?t right click with this mode.

Hi, I got an S230u Twist last autumn and have been really happy with it. At the time, I ordered a set of replacement rubber TrackPoint caps. When I replaced the original cap the other day, I realised that the replacement ones are about 0.5mm shorter than the original one, with the result that the H and G keys get caught on the edge of the cap; you have to hit them quite hard to get them to work. I compared all the new caps from the packet against the original one, and sure enough; they're all a little too short. They fit, but it's annoying to have to go back and make sure all my ""G"s and "H"s typed correctly.  Has anyone else had the same problem? Lenovo, could this just have been a bad batch, and if so can I return the unused ones for a replacement set that is the correct height?

Answer:S230u - replacement trackpoint TrackPoint caps are too short

If you bought them from Lenovo I'd just try and return them. If not dispute on eBay/PayPal/Credit Card. But never use poor quality TrackPoint Caps. Remember if a computer is running efficiently so is the person behind it generally.

Hi, I wonder whether there is a way to enable press-to-click for the trackpoint on the new x1? In the respective settings there is no such options and I searched everywhere, somebody found it? Next question: In order to avoid the annoying noise of the clickpad everytime you press it, I would like to use the tap function of the touchpad while using the trackpoint to move the cursor. Unfortunately, tapping on the pad seems to be disabled during use of trackpoint - any smart hack to get this workig? Thanks to all,J

Hi hossain, Welcome to the Lenovo forum  The R400 is very similar to the T400. I think the major differences are:R400 is slightly thicker and heavier.R400 case is different plastic.R400 available LCD screens are different (no LED backlight options?).R400 is available only with Intel graphics (in U.S. at least).R400 isn't available with WWAN (cellular Internet).R400 is less expensive. Here's a thread on thinkpads.com that you might find useful. Good luck!-FrankMessage Edited by fmyhr on 2009-07-22 12:14 PM

Question: R400 maximum RAM?

Hello all. I was just wondering if someone could give me a definite answer on whether the R400 series(7438-T6U) can support upto 8GB ram or just 4GB.I see specs/info stating both. Like on the Lenovo site, the data sheet says 8GB, but this page says 4GB. Various other websites have these contradicting specs as well, and even the Crucial memory website says it can take upto 8GB of Ram.I'm hoping someone can clarify this or if anyone's successfully installed more than 4gb of Ram, feel free to chime in.Thanks

Hello,

I have a R400-103 and want to replace the current harddisk with a solid state disk of about 80-120 GB.
I already asked about this in this forum, but I am still not quite sure what I need (interface, dimensions and so).

Currently there is a [MK8007GAH|http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=StorageSolutions/1.8-inchHardDiskDrives/MK8007GAH] harddisk present. What SSD can be a good replacement for that?

I think the interface type is UltraATA/100 (ZIF, Micro ATA), but I am not sure if that's the only thing that is importang

If someone can help me with some more information on what to look for and perhaps some models that are a good replacement, that would be very helpful.

Thanks for any help.

Kind regards,

Gaston

Answer:Re: What SSD can I use for Portege R400-103

Hi

As far as I know the Prot?g? R400 where equipped with the 80GB 1.8? IDE (PATA, enhanced IDE ATA-6) HDD.
The HDD had a height of 8mm.

So if you would like to upgrade the R400 with an SSD drive then you should use an SSD which supports the IDE interface and the SSD should be 1.8?

But I didn?t find any information on Toshiba page about SSD compatibility? so you will have to test it at your own hand?

I have an IBM R40 and was very pleased with the keyboard (whole computer, actually).

However, when it was time to replace it I decided to get an R400.

I was quite disappointed with the keyboard, and recently this has become such a problem that I went back to the R40 for doing any substantial writing projects.

I am considering replacing the R400 and wondered if Lenovo still makes a laptop with the equivalent of the R40 IBM keyboard.

Thanks for further information.

Dear all, would like to ask what is the difference - other than Intel newer platform - between R61 and R400? I notice that the touchpad is wider and have scroll marking on R400.Anyone know about the rest of specs, thinkpad specific, like maybe there is a difference implementation on roll cage, etc? Thank you.

Answer:What is the difference between R61 and R400?

The R400 is the newer generation of the R series, R61 is the older version. The motherboard and CPU/GPU on the R400 is newer.

Question: R400, 7443 - CTO

Refuses to pass POST. As far as I know, it was left out in a hot car for a weekend. When turned on, it makes a single beep, then 3 beeps, then 3 beeps again, then another single beep. Can anyone help me out with POST codes or just let me know what that one means? Thanks,Josh

Answer:R400, 7443 - CTO

As long as it wasn't on, I don't think it would hurt it.  According to the Beep Codes, it's a dimm or the board.  I'd try re-seating the memory.  If it doesn't work, try them one at a time.  I'm assuming you're still under warranty?

Question: Dead R400's

I?m curious to know if anyone else if having issues with R400 laptop boards locking up to the point where they will not post. We?ve dealt with 20 or so of these so far where I work, and it seems like we?re getting at least one of these every week. Symptoms: from a powered off state, when you turn the power on, the power indicator light lights up, but the screen does not. A few seconds later, the power light turns off.  Repeating the process gives you the same results. Pulling the battery and power cord, waiting for a moment, (anywhere from minutes to days) replacing the battery and power and turning it on gives you the same results. Powering on with just the AC adapter and no battery installed gives you the same results. Remedies so Far:  In some cases, removing the power supply and battery, and doing a static discharge (by Lenovo?s tech support, press the power button 10 times and then hold the power button in for 30 seconds) seems to get the systems booting again with a CMOS settings cleared message. If that doesn?t work, doing the above as well as pulling the CMOS battery seems to do it. Once the system is booting, it will work for awhile but may go back into the catatonic state. We've tested affected PC's for memory errors and they have all passed using multiple RAM testing tools. We also recently tried flashing the BIOS with the latest revision on affected PC's and that seems to work better, but we've had 1 or 2 come back after the BIOS... Read more

Question: R400 Downgrade

I have an R400  (7443-CTO) lenovo laptop w/ Windows Vista Home Basic Installed on it. Is it possible for me to downgrade to Windows XP? Note that I have a legal copy of Windows XP professional. If so is there a way to get all the Thinkvantage programs and correct drivers?

Answer:R400 Downgrade

hi,1) you can downgrade from vista to xp (on same licence) only when vista is bussines and more (bussines and ultimate)2) if you have "stand alone" installation with another licence, of course, you can remove vista and then install XP (but before anything just for safe burn factory installation of your notebook - installing xp will probably remove all partitions with factory installation)3) nope, there is no way to transform vista to xp with all drivers or anything such this - download all drivers from support page for windows xp. after xp installed (from disc), install drivers one by one... it takes a while to download everything and manually install that here is link to download page: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70439.html

Hi all... I just bought a R400 today and thus far it seems quite good! It is a pretty basic spec'd machine - P8600; 2.4Ghz; 500 GB HDD; 4GB RAM; Win 7 Pro. I bought it in India and seem to have got a good deal on it. I have a couple of questions thought and I wonder if you folks who are more experienced with these machines could help me out. (1) The machine I bought originally had no OS. This means it had something called FreeDOS, which is a quite common feature in India. I opted to buy a Win 7 Pro copy directly from the Lenovo reseller. He gave me an OEM version, which he installed and validated online. Thus far all is well. However, I find that what in effect I have a clean install of Win 7, which is a good thing in many ways. But it also means that I do not have the ThinkVantage software on my machine. When I checked on the Lenovo site, I find that the site does not list this software for the R400. Can you folks tell me what my options are? While I may not use all the utilities in the ThinkVantage package, there are some like power calibration etc. that I may want to use. (2) Also, I think (though I could be wrong) that the ThinkVantage software also helps in keeping drivers etc updated in which case it would be helpful to have. What do you folks think? Thanks in advance for any assistance that you may provide. Cheers!

Hi I have been looking at several r400 laptops. I have noticed on two of these laptops that the wireless light is not on at all above the keyboard and of course there is no way to connect via wireless. I have installed the latest driver and I don't really see any difference with any other laptops as to why this wouldn't work but I am connecting to a secure environment and I'm going to try installing the certificate manually for it to see if that works. The wireless switch is on as well and windows pops up says it is on when I switch wireless on. I can't test the hardware with pc doctor so I am thinking about installing intel wireless software temporarily just to diagnose whether the hardware is actually working. I've checked device manager it says it is ok. I don't know what else I can do. I heard there is a function in the bios that turns on wireless is this true? Is there anything else I should check? At the moment I'm trying to get it in for warranty. It needs to go in anyway the green led isn't working and it's a fault with the laptop.

have you tried fn + f5 key combo the switch can be on but the radio can be off fn + f5 a window will open you can power on and off the wireless & bluetooth

I just bought this nice Portege R400.
After some search in this forum i managed to insert the 3g-phonecard.
But i'm not able to acivate the 3g-modem - i don't even find it in the device manager

Some basics:

Modellname PORTEGE R400
Teilenummer PPR40E-00S01SJN
BS-Version Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 6.0.6000 (German language)
BIOS-Version Version 1.50
Modem none

Trying to install TOSHIBA 3G RF POWER CONTROL UTILITY Version 1.0.1.7 desn't effect anything (does not start to install anything, probably because the device is not found)

is anyone able to get me some help... thanks

Answer:Portege R400 - no 3G module?

Hi dude

I think it?s not known to you that Toshiba delivers the own products with different hardware configurations and specifications.

Not all Portege R400 have been equipped with the 3G module?

Your Portege R400 PPR40E-00S01SJN does not support this module and therefore the TOSHIBA 3G RF POWER CONTROL UTILITY does not work.

I have an R400 running XP.  Recently I upgraded to the latest bios hoping that would address an intermitent issue with the display.   During the bios load, and every restart thereafter, the machine hangs for 10 minutes with a blank screen and no disk activity.  After 10 minutes, it comes to life and displays the expected screens.  I tried reloading older bioses, but get the same result.  I am not sure if the bios load is succesful, as the counter displayed by the bios utility seemed to stop at the fifth item and no further progress was shown.  Is there anything known that might cause this behavior ?

Four days old and I am cranky. No difference whether I am running on AC, battery or a combination of  both. Absolutely no joy apart from a small 'click' sound.  The Happy lights come on at the bottom of the screen and then disappear except for the battery/AC and the chargy one. No screen action at all. Bleughghgh for Lenovo.

I am considering purchasing a docking station for my R400 with an intel graphics card. My question is will I be able to take advantage of the DVI and analog video ports on the docking station so that I can run dual monitors? I cannot find anywhere on Lenovo's website that will confirm or deny the likely hood that this configuration would work.

Upon installing new software or updating existing software / drivers on my r400, I am prompted as usual to restart so that the updates or new software will be available for use. However, about half of the time the computer will not start back up. Instead it emits 6-8 beeps and the screen remains blank. It appears as if the computer will not boot up after a restart. This occurs about half of the time and only during a restart, not during a start up or resuming from sleep. Any suggestions?

HI folks,

Can someone point me towards a replcacement HDD for the R400? The ones listed on www.topazsupport.co.uk are horrendously overpriced, of course, so I'm looking for a standard 1.8" drive that will fit this model.
I notice the present HDD has a female connector while most HDDs appear to have a male one (I say "appear to" because nobody actually seems to have actual pictures of their drives for me to find out!)

Thanks,

Ferg.

Answer:HDD replacement on Portege R400

According notebook specification your notebook has 80 GB 1.8-inch PATA HDD.

To be honest I don't know what do you mean with ?standard HDD?. The fact is you must use compatible HDD for this notebook model. According notebook specification you can use MK8007GAH HDD. In my opinion you should replace HD with the same model. So you can be sure everything will be OK. I also believe 80 GB capacity is enough.

I found nice pictures for you:
Here is the HDD picture
Here you can see connectors

At the end I must say that HDD replacement seems to be easy but these 1,8? HDDs are more sensitive and pressure on the wrong place can damage the HDD and data can be lost.

Do you really want to replace it alone?

Hello everybody, hello community!I need help with the following problem: While hibernating my R400 consumes power. About 6-8% in about 10-11 hours (6-cell-battery).During the last days I've read many articles and threads about similar problems. Very informative... but effectless. I've disabled wake-on-LAN and the hybrid-standby-mode... in both options, in windows and in BIOS. Nothing helps. The problem appeared after updating BIOS and from Vista to Windows 7. Since these updates hibernate consumes power. Can anybody help?! I've no more ideas and don't want to make a clean install of windows 7 or something similar. Perhaps it is a common bug... and there is a patch, that is only unknown to me?! Thanks for your answers!

Answer:R400 needs power in hibernate

I've been experiencing similar problems on my R500 running Windows 7 Pro x64. I have the latest version of Power Manager (3.20) however when I leave my notebook hibernated overnight I find that the battery has dropped from 100% capacity down to 90% capacity even though all it did overnight was sit in the bag hibernating (not connected to power).

Question: R400 Games crashes

Hi,I have a have a Lenovo R400 (7440CL2) running Windows 7. I am having problems running newer games. For instance I have down loaded a demo version of Need for Speed Shift, it installs with no problems but when I run it it crashes after the intro just as the actual game is about to start with a message saying NEED FOR Speed Shift has stopped working and to close the program, no more detail. Exactly the same thing happens with Dirt2, Grid and Fallout 3.I suspect it may be something to do with the graphics hardware. System information tells me I have a Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family adapter and the driver is version 8.15.10.2057. Adapter RAM 1.23 GB. I have tried updating the drivers via ThinkVantage. Is it just that the hardware isn?t up to running theses games or is there something I can do to fix the problem.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was just wondering if this is normal or other people are sharing the same problem as me. I just received my laptop a week ago and it is what I call close to perfection. The problem that I have is that everytime I set the battery to 'maximum performance' I hear this sound coming out of the laptop. At first I thought it was from the speakers because its very close to the same sound you hear when your headphone is attached to the computer at loud volume while your CPU is processing. When I change the battery usage settings, the sound goes away. This sound is very annoying as it is loud enough for me to notice. its very high pitch at a low frequency sound. any solutions?? should i worry about this?? could it be some kind of problem that will screw me over in a year or two.

I've bought Toshiba Portege R400 more than a year ago.
It had vista installed and I?ve worked on it about a month but after installing lots of software on in I?ve got it working VERY SLOW.
I've decided to downgrade to XP but Toshiba don?t provide installation media for downgrade.
Then contacted Microsoft official support and get an answer: You can use any legal installation media to downgrade.

And when I asked about double activation I?ve got another solution: I?m contacting Microsoft support while activation and explaining my situation and telling my Vista CD key. They will activate my Windows XP manually.

There?s so hard to find Windows XP tablet pc media in russia in my town. But I?ve found one from friend and did as I was said. All worked perfectly.

But not long ago I got my Windows crashed and had to reinstall it. But now without any original legal media.
After installing Windows XP SP3 I?ve got a message about validation failure.

I have no more mates with any legal Windows XP tablet pc CD.
I DO NOT WANT to buy another OS to this notebook ? I?ve already have Windows Vista Ultimate with downgrade rights.

I want an answer what shall I do with "illegal" Windows on my Portege because Microsoft says that its manufacturer who shall provide legal downgrade.

I don?t want more Vista ? I?ve tried it on PC and get it working perfectly but on this notebook it is very slow working OS

Answer:Portege R400 - I want to downgrade to XP

Hi

You said that your notebook has been delivered and preinstalled with Vista OS.
In such case you can get only a Toshiba Recovery Vista disk.
If you need another OS then you have to buy a full version.

But I?ve got other important information for you; in you will install the Windows XP on this R400 then you will have to search in internet for compatible drivers because it looks like the Win XP drivers have been not released for the R400 at this time.

Unfortunately, I?ve got no other news for you?

Hi

I am a newbie and unfortunately not to hot with computers either. So I hope you will understand what I am trying to explain whilst my frustration level is at it's highest!!!

I have a Portege R400 and so far been unable to find an external DVD-RW. I have gone through two DVD writers, one being a Sony which never seem to get further than trying to install the disc that came with it. The other a HP took 4 hours to install and still didn't finish so I turned it off and tried continously with the same problem everytime. Both products were returned back to the store which was good, but now I have so many films on my laptop that I need to burn on CD in order to watch and can't do it.

Now considering throwing the laptop out the window as here in Canada no one in the stores can help me! In one store I ask the salegirls for DVD writers she looked at me all lovingly and after 3minutes of digesting what I was asking kindly replied " we only sell them in quarters"!!! Now what am I suppose to do with that answer?

Any help is greatly appreciated and I apologise for not being more knowledgeable with this sort of thing.

Thanks again.

Answer:Anyone recommend a DVD-RW for my Portege R400

Hello

Can you please tell me which drivers you used?
Have you connected them using USB port on your Portege notebook?

Answer:Portege R400 - Won't Turn on

The LED light for the AC adapter is on, and the light for the battery is blinking. When I press power both go off then come back on. I tried taking the battery out and starting it, still nothing. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas what was wrong with it, if it was worth it to take it to get it fix or if I should try to get a new one. And if the new problems are connected to the spillage. That is what the problem is...and i cannot figure out how to make it work or what the problem is.

My motherboard is fried and i ordered a new motherboard from a supplier.
My question is; could i possibly use another processor.

Answer:Portege R400 - Can I use other CPU on new motherboard

Well, usually the CPU upgrade is not really easily on notebook motherboards.

First of all you will have to ensure that the new CPU would match on the socket. Then you have to check if the motherboard chipset would support the new CPU.
Finally there could be a problem with the motherboard BIOS.
The point is that the BIOS has not been tested with other CPU?s and therefore nobody will be able to say if your notebook would run trouble free after such upgrade.

Dear all,

I need to factory-restore a Portege R400.
This model does not come with a CD/DVD drive, and there was no recovery CD in the package.

Could anyone advise me on how to proceed?

Thanks, all the best, federicoan

Answer:How do I restore a Portege R400?

Hi

I assume you would need a compatible, external PC card CD/DVD drive for booting from the Recovery disk.
Such drive could be ordered from the ASP in your country, also the recovery DVD could be ordered from Toshiba authorized service partner.

At the other hand I believe that the notebook was equipped with the HDD recovery option. In this case you could press F8 button to get the advanced boot menu.
There you could choose the option called ?Repair My Computer?.
Then you could choose the option ?Toshiba recovery?.

Usually this option is available in most of newer notebook series but I?m not quite sure if it was included in Port?g? R400 too?. So just check it simply.

Hello, a few weeks ago i updated my Videocarddriver over Systemupdate and after that sometimes when i start my laptop it shows the following error: http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=26112009029vvnm.jpghttp://file.qip.ru/file/109602001/6757f918/26112009004.html Until now it went away after i rebooted the machine, as said before it seems to happen completly random, while running on batteries or be pluged in to power supply. I am not really shure if this is a hardware or software problem. The first time i noticed it was after the update of the video card driver, but that could be a coincidence. Meanwhile i installed the original driver vom Intel but that changed nothing (only the OSD for changing the brightness is now gone).Has anybody an Idea about my problem? My System isR400 7440 P86002DB DDR3160GB HDIntel X4500

Dear Forum Member,

I own a Portege R400. Now I want to upgrade my hard Disk from the installed 80 GB 1,8 inch (IDE Connector) to a higher capacitiy. Today I called a Toshiba dealer and they told me, that this is not possible because all the new 1,8 inch HDD?s have the new ZIF connector. Now my question is: Is that true or is there a possibility to replace the exisitng 80 GB HDD with a 120GB or 160 GB HDD. If yes, which HDD Model will work?

Any help would be GREAT!!!

Bye

Giovanni

Answer:HDD Upgrade on a Portege R400

Hello Giovanni

Since 4 days nobody wrote anything here and you will be pretty lucky if someone here can give you proper answer. Googling around I found that Toshiba offers 1,8?? HDD with more capacity than your original 80 GB capacity.

Unfortunately about this new connector I cannot say anything but the best place where you can get this info is authorized Toshiba service partner in your country. They are specialized for Toshiba notebook repair and I am pretty sure they have access to Toshiba parts database.

Make a call and ask them about HDD upgrade. Maybe you can also order new HDD for replacement.
The addresses and phone numbers you can find under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads > Find an ASP.

Bye and good luck!

In my opinion you could use also a 100GB and 120GB HDD with higher rotation. This shouldn?t be a problem.

Check this and come back and post the result.

Hi,

since some days my R400 doesn't show any TabletPC functions: stylus doesn't work and when I turn the screen nothing appens, i.e. resolution doesn't become vertical instead of horizontal. Moreover I tried to uninstall last Windows Updates, to reinstall Toshiba drivers, but nothing changes. Moreover again Toshiba Tempo doesn't open, such as Toshiba Diag.

Please help me because no reply from Toshiba support center since last week.

Answer:No More TabletPC on Portege R400

For the stylus to work, there's a system service: Tablet Input Service (or sth like that), that needs to be running. You might check that out (click "Start" and type "services.msc"), however I don't think it's related to the other problems.

Hi,I (and some colleagues) have all a strange problem when using a surfstick: One Time you can connect to UMTS and everything works smooth. But as soon as the connection drops, you can not reconnect until you reboot the machine. There is an error 720 that points to the RASMAN service. From what I read in some forums it might be related to the Thinkvantage tools. My Configuration: R400/Type 7440-CL2/Windows Vista Enterprise 32 - Huawei 172 based UMTS card. Any help is appreciated, as i already had a looooooooong session with the mobile provider - they say it seems to be a common problem with lenovo R and T machines, both XP and Vista. Best regards, Alex

Answer:R400 3G/UMTS Problem

this problem is an issue with the Huawei driver and Win 7 and Vista, a software bug.

Hi, I have recently decided to upgrade the memory in my Lenovo R400 7440, and after trying to install the 2x4GB Modules, i get the dreaded beep codes. i have a second lenovo laptop for work, the L420, and i have tried the RAM in this laptop, and these successfully work.  I ran the crucial system scanner to find out what RAM i could purchase and it advised me towards some 2x4GB sticks, so i went ahead and brought these. i then went ahead and made a couple of changes to the Laptop, i installed a SSD, and updated the BIOS. then assuming the RAM would work as crucial had said, and they just gave me the error codes. I am running Windows 8 x64. I have read other posts about this laptop here, and everything suggests the laptop takes 8GB RAM, and have also checked many other sites, but the laptop is saying differntly when installing it.  Can anyone help with this issue? Thanks, Robert & Alexandra

Answer:R400 RAM issue 7440

Hi, rolex9283

What is the beep code you are receiving? You may hear long beeps, short beeps, or a mixture of the two. If we know exactly what error the computer is transmitting through the beeps, it is possible to look up your system and find out what the beep really means.

Best of luck,
Adam

Question: R400 display issue

Any advice on what is needed to check/fix/replace would be most welcome My screen is displaying dark light patches along the bottom.

Answer:R400 display issue

Hi, JTQ

How long have you been having this issue? Also, is the rest of the LCD backlight fine and this issue only occurs along the bottom? And did this occur before you upgraded to Windows 8?

I would definitely make sure that your BIOS, display, and chipset drivers are up to date. They can all be found here. You can download and install them and see if anything changes.

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

If you're running a 32-bit version of any OS - be it XP, Vista, W7 or Linux - only 3GB of RAM are usable. You need a 64-bit OS in order to properly utilize the 4GB that you currently have installed.

Answer:R400- Does not boot with new Kingston ram.

Those modules are Kingston Value RAM modules (identifiable by the KVVxxx product number), which normally don't work well with ThinkPads, if it's possible I would return them back and get a different brand, for example:

Corsair (but avoid the "Value Select" line!)
Samsung
Hynix
Crucial
Elpida
ADATA
Kingston (but not the "Value RAM" line!!)

Answer:R400 CPU upgrade options

Hi there, welcome to the forum!

It would be very helpfull if you posted the exact machine type of your R400 (4 numbers, dash and 3 more numbers/letters) located at the bottom of your laptop.

There is a number of CPUs you can fit to your laptop, but do not search for just "socket P" because this means practically all Core 2 Duo processors, most of them incompatible with your laptop. You could safely go for a T8400 though, or a T9400 if you can afford it.

Having said that, you have to be very carefull changing the cpu from a celeron to a c2d. There is the risk of high temperatures with the new cpu and of course a risk of destroying your laptop if you don't know exactly what you are doing.

Also, take a look at the Hardware maintenance manual for your Thinkpad, it contains detailed information of how to handle any repair procedure.

Question: R400 wifi card

I just purchased and installed an IBM Atheros Ar5bhb63 mini pci wifi card for my R400. The internet had stopped working so I was hoping the new card would get things working again. The problem is the pc locks up on startup and tells me to remove the "unauthorized mini pci card and restart".I removed the card and installed the latest bios hoping that would do the trick. Then I reinstalled the card but it immediatly displayed the error message again. What am I doing wrong?

Answer:R400 wifi card

I have this vague recollection that the refusal of your R400 to accept any slightly different internal WiFi card is built into the firmware or hardware of the R400 by Lenovo, and that there (at the time I read this) was no way to get around this.  That is, you either use the exact piece of hardware specified by the design of your R400, or you must do without an internal WiFi card.    Since good quality USB Wifi adapters are widely available for as little as $5 in the USA, this shouldn't be a major problem.    I would simply switch to using one of these, if I were you.

I'm trying to install XP on XPS R400, previously running 98. I'm getting error message invalid system disc but all original discs are lost. I reformatted drive thinking the XP would go right on but I'm stuck.

Answer:Dell XPS R400 Pentium II

It sounds like it's not booting to the Windows XP CD. You need to get into the BIOS setup and be sure the boot sequence is set to CDRom Drive, Floppy Drive and then hard drive in that order.

When the PC first powers on, you should see instructions to press a key to get into Setup. It's usually the DEL or F1 key. Once in the BIOS setup set the Boot Sequence and be sure to read the instructions on the screen to save the settings as you exit.

Let us know what happens.

Hi
i have a Portege R400-106, which no longer has a hard drive - so can't just get the number off the old one :-(
i'm trying to work out which hard drive i can put in it,
i can see that hard drive space in the laptop has IDE prongs. It is possible that this is PATA type, but my research so far suggests that when drives say they are IDE, i should be OK (please tell me if i have this wrong!)
i believe it is a 2.5" drive i'm looking for and the original drive would have been 80GB, which is about what i think i need.
I think i may be wanting an MK8025GAS ???

i found one at: http://www.memory4less.com/ConfItems.aspx?modelid=80028876
but the cost is pretty prohibative as i live in the UK and the shipping is loads.

I can't seem to find anywhere that can tell me which drive is suitable
cheers in advance for any ideas :-)

I own R400 laptop with Windows 7 preinstalled.I've purchased this laptop with recovery discs for Windows XP SP3 included so I presume I have double license. When I restore Win XP SP3 from recovery discs it works and activates fine. Then I use Pidgen (The Ultimate PID Checker) application to extract Windows verification code.I need to make clean Windows XP SP3 installation from another disc, without all that manufacturer staff, but the verification codes does not seem to be valid. Both of them: the one from the sticker on the bottom and that extracted from restored installation. Why is that so? The same thing is on another R400 laptop that had Vista preinstalled. Vista is a total mistake so I wanted to downgrade to XP. That second laptop had Windows XP SP2 recovery discs included, but I wanted clean installation as well. I've installed XP SP2 and tried Vista code from the sticker on the bottom - didn't work. Unfortunatelly I can't find those SP2 recovery discs anymore to extract and check verification code from restored system. My question is why any verification code is not valid for clean XP installation on these laptops? PID checker extracts codes of Vista and Win 7 flawlessly and they are the same as on sticker on the laptops bottoms. All codes are confirmed by Produkey application, that displays the ProductID and the CD-Key of MS products.

Hello,

is my first contribution here, and first I want to thank all you guys who help us to fix our problems with our Lenovo. I read some very useful posts before that help me fixing some troubles I had in the past, but now I found a Problem that forces me to write looking for help.

My Lenovo R400 is not booting up. It powers up and turn on hard external dvd-writer, fan and hdd for a second, and then suddenly turns off again. I am not able to see the LED Panel on the screen, since I was trying to repair my screen.

Actually I first just had a flickering Problem as it has been often posted in this community. I thought of a wire or problem between screen and computer, so I open my R400 and try to reseat the screen, as I realized that the connection with the LCD screen was loose. In the process of reseating the screen something went wrong, and the connection between the computer and the backlight-inverter (sorry about my lack of knowledge) where the led panel is was broken. I am not sure if the ac adapter was plugged or not at this time.

After this every time I try to boot up the laptop does not power on. I read a lot of posts on these Forum with similar problems, and try some of the solution that are suggested:

- I take every component of the computer apart and try to boot. The same happens.
Only if I take away the RAM memory, the 1-3-3-1 beep secuence can be heard. In this case the fan remains on a little longer, something like 20 second... Read more

Answer:Lenovo R400 not booting up

Hi, I see you have no replies So I will share my very very limited knowledge with you and see. I too am just a user, but I've been reading about BIOS troubles and found that if a computer won't boot, sometimes it helps to remove the power adapter, remove battery, remove CMOS battery for a while and hold power button. Then reassemble and try. Also switching a jumper from normal position to maintenance position and back, might reset BIOS, which *might* help as it forces the BIOS to redetect all hardware connected (please someone verify?). Click for steps. I don't know about that broken connection though, you might have to google that and maybe find a new one on Ebay, but you might need some micro soldering experience or ... knowledge for that  Best of luck let us know how you get on.

How can I fasten my R400 hinges? The screen is very loose right now. Thanks!

Answer:Need to fasten R400 hinges

Hey there NunoLuz,

Looking over some other threads with similar issues, there has not been much success with tightening hinges. Now is the screen wobbly or the LCD portion of the screen loose itself? You can try looking at the pages 138-139 of the hardware maintenance manual (pg 146-147 in Adobe), which lends itself to possibly being able "to tighten" this portion. Most have recommended to replace the hinges altogether. There are part numbers for the hinges in later in the hardware maintenance manual starting around page 304.

Is the machine still under warranty, or did you by chance receive from work or school?

Thanks NunoLuz, I look forward to your response.

I just got a R400 (7439-RN7) a couple of weeks ago. It is preload with a Vista Home Premium. The machine was purchased in Macau while I am currently working in a small town in China. It is pretty hard to find out information of this model over the internet. I wanted to have a downgrade to Windows XP Pro. But my assistant was told by the sales person that the laptop can only be used with the attached OS due to restrictions made by the manufaturer (I am not too sure what he meant as he was the one who bought the machine/ or either the spec of the computer is customized for Vista, he was not sure too). Is that possible? I do have a legal copy of XP, new. If it is not, here are several questions more.1. Which files should I back up (the original Vista bundled backup) before cleaning up the HDD for XP installation?2. Which are the drivers that are required by XP? (When I looked up at the drivers page, there was too many drivers)3. What about the partition called SERVICEV003?4. Will it be better if I clone my current HDD to an external HDD? How can I do it? Sorry if the questions are stupid as I haven't been using Windows for some years. The IT support in my company is really... well not helpful, couldn't find anyone helpful in the town too, really a small town with not many outside information. Cheers, SunnyMessage Edited by plane8890 on 05-06-2009 01:54 AM

Hi,i'm new lenovo owner! after few hours playing wint Windows LOL Vista (new to me too), i noticed that my new notebook "buzz". i had same problem  on my last notebook HP Compaq nx7400 - it was really annoying and i had notebook few times on service - but they never repaired it.now, i'm little bit sad - i was looking for new lenovo and now, i can see, it has same "defect" as my last notebook... but there is difference between hp and lenovo. hp was "buzzing" when was running on batteries and most time with something in USB. now, lenovo buzz most time when running on AC and without anything on USB. "of course" it is still buzzing just on battery or with USB device - but it is not so frequent as first case. i was thinking, what i did to notebook before it started buzzing... i did ThinkVintage update - updated BIOS, and was using my Genius USB optical mouse - so, could anything of this caused "damage" and make ntb buzz? also, i found few forums where was posted "solution" by turning off some kind of CPU feature, but with note that this decrease life time of battery. also i don't like to use third-party sw to manage such things. could anybody help? is my lenovo damaged? or it can be set on BIOS (not by kind of sw).

Answer:R400, Buzz sound from CPU / USB ?

umm i forgot: buzz sound is comming from left side of notebook body (somewhere around processor or USB ports). also buzzing is interrupting when heavy access to disk or large network access (when copying files from ntb to pc via LAN)...

1. Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T9400, 2.53 GHz, FSB 1066 MHz, L2 6 MB
2. Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T9900, 3.06 GHz, FSB 1066 MHz, L2 6 MB

Hello,

I want to start windows on my portege R400, but with the LAN and bluetooth enables, and 3g disabled. Now all are enabled after starting, and I have to stop the 3g by using the cards on the top of the screen. I just want to turn enable it when I need it.

Can someone tell me how to do that?

Kind regards,

If I understand you right you can enable/disable it through the cards.
What do you want exactly? to have 3G disabled by default?
