Preferred Solution: Lock ups and time outs on a network night

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi.

For awhile now my internet has been acting really stupid.

Oftentimes, I notice that everything that relates to loading a web-page on my computer grinds to a halt, what will happen is that I will try and load a webpage, and it simply does not load until later. If I try to load all my webpages at once, they will all begin and finish loading at the exact same time. This is really really annoying and I have tried nothing more than changing my DNS back and forth on my computer (not my router) to see if it would change anything, It didn't. I believe this problem is exclusive to my computer because I try loading up webpages on my mobile devices and this problem is not present.

Additionally, the router often loses connectivity to the internet and we have to pull the power and plug it back in manually in order to get it working. This is also pretty annoying.

Another problem I have been getting recently is that my internet speed is just agonizingly slow in general. My router is capable of reaching up to 2 mb/s yet still I am connected to my modem and router in one by Ethernet cable and it is still slow. The problem is because I have another big internet user in the house who is connected via Wi-Fi to their laptop, they often watch Youtube and download video-games off of Steam. Despite this, the router seems to be giving the laptop more internet bandwidth while I am stuck with sub-200 kb/s speeds and it will not let up for the rest of the day, even when I... Read more

Ok basically I'm having trouble with my son staying up too late during the night surfing the net. We've agreed his bedtime should be midnight, however he sleeps in the basement and that is where our computer also is stationed.

I can't stay up until midnight to be able to see to it he goes to bed on time as I have work early in the mornings.

I heard from a friend at work that you can program your network connection to go offline at a specific time every day using an administrative account on our computer.

Could anybody please give me a run through of how I could possibly set this up? We run Windows XP and our service provider is Shaw(Canadian Internet Service Provider)

Second post here and borne out of confidence in the advice given...

my own computer this time

Windows XP and an 8 month old compaq.

The Adminstrator account is used by myself (most frequent of all), the Guest account is for visitors and another (generated account) for the young kids. Little use on all accounts by and large.

I have CCleaner and have run it (including 'Issues' a couple of times). Am running Norton Internet 2006.

The Problem:

I can 'switch user' between Guest and Admin account all I like without problem. But if I go to log off the Guest account it either takes ages to do so or the pc locks. Logging off the Guest account always (in recent times) results in me getting a ccAPP mini-Window up on screen (I know this has something to do with Norton) telling me that it is ending the programme. This does its business for a while then disappears leaving the Guest desktop in full colour. I can open the Start menu again and click log off again and that mini Window will close as usual but still nothing happens.

Sometimes if I leave it be, it will eventually (after minutes) log out and go back to the pick-your-user screen. Most times the screen goes black blank and I have to power down altogether.

Related but unlikely: only this last week I'm seeing a DOS-type screen flicking up during the startup. It lasts a second or two then carries on and starts up fine. I pressed the 'esc' key today when it appeared and 'caught' it. It gave two options "... Read more

Just wanted to see if anyone more knowledged would have an opinion on this. I have had cable modem for awhile now and all was working fine. Then all of a sudden in the evenings it would disconnect me..i would unplug modem and get back online..maybe 20 mins later it happens again over and over.
Now it is happening constantly. I have called the ISP i have and they say they are looking into it but acted like they had little clue at the moment.
So do any of you maybe have an opinion on what this could be? Is it more then likely my ISP and not something with my computer or whatever. Its runs fine then i get disconnected, unplug modem and plug it back in and im back on for a little bit more.
Thanks
Todd

Question: Download Time-Outs

Seems to be a common problem for which I haven't found an answer to yet - download timeouts.

1) Usually on large files over 150-200Mb or greater.
2) On servers with single connection only and resume is not available.
3) Common problem with all my browsers, Firefox, IE, Chrome and Safari.
4) This problem only effects downloads to my PC, downloads to my iPad2, PS3 and Sky box via WiFi are all OK, recently did a 1Gb update on my PS3 without ant problems.

There is a setting deep in the bowels of my Win7 which I don't where to find or how to fix.
Any ideas?

Mike

Answer:Download Time-Outs

This utility can tweak your TCP settings. I'd make a restore point first in case it makes things worse. But I've used it over the years and the results seemed either no change or improved. Hasn't hosed me yet:

SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads

Also you might try Free Download Manager. You can drag and drop a link onto the target without doing the whole "browser integration" bit. It may help with keeping the connection alive even if it can't use multiple connections.

Tor check web page and status box says Iím connected to Tor. I can access the regular Internet on Tor.

Iím using the latest stable Tor bundle to access the Tor network.

I canít access any .onion sites despite having:
1.Reinstalled Tor several times
2.ďExcellentĒ signal strength
3.Trying to access TorDir, Core.onion, Hidden Wiki, Duck Duck Go, and various other hidden services.
4.Switched identities uncountable times
5.Checking the computer clock time
6.Used Tor inside a virtual machine
7.Turning my computer on and off
8.Reloaded the pages literally hundreds of times.

Iíve visited .onion sites inside an XP virtual machine on my old laptop and know that most of the sites Iím trying to reach are online (e.g., Hidden Wiki) and can access the Tor network, but no .onion sites-----------So I KNOW somethingís wrong.

Every time I try to connect to an .onion site, the connection times out, but again, I KNOW somethingís wrong and am at my witís end. I havenít accessed a single .onion site once in the last few months.

So someone please help me if you can. I would really appreciate it.

Our Outlook (and Outlook express) have been timing out on us and tell us to go into our Sent Items and resend our emails. This is annoying. It says 60 seconds is the time allowed. Is there anyway to change the 60 seconds time limit? Windows XP.

Hello I am having a problem with my internet, no matter what browsers I use the web pages ?Time out? or when they do load they do not show any images, and they also look like basic mode from firefox. I am using my workers computer to post this.

Google loads fine but that?s as far as it goes. eBay just about loads but the picture do not all I see is text saying item picture.
Major geek?s home page loads but nothing else.
YouTube same as eBay, but home page loads good, but when clicked on videos the rest of the page does not load. And videos stop very early in and do not continue to play.

The rest of the pc seems fine apart from ?Malwarebytes? crashes when updating if I click anywhere. It has now updated after may try?s.

I have ran full virus scans and both MB & MSE both found nothing.

I recently tried out ?Online Armor Free? but quickly uninstalled it, I am thinking that has done something? I have had Microsoft security essentials from day one, (and OAF was installed on top to try out) problems started very soon after this.

Browsers used
iexplorer
Chrome
Firefox (my main browser)

I am willing to follow all advice given, and thanks in advance to all.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything. Note if you cannot save things in C:\ then just save them to your Desktop. Make sure that you have disable UAC and rebooted first if you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!

Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
[*]Starting your computer in Safe mode
If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does no... Read more

My problem is this, I can startup the computer and browse the web with no problems, if I run the computer longer than 15-20 minutes and then try to browse I get the following error messages:
Firefox- 'operation timed out when attempting to contact ...'
IE explorer- 'the page cannot be displayed', and 'cannot find server', the latter in the tray at the bottom left.

It had Norton Security on which I have uninstalled thinking that was the problem, no viruses, spyware have been indicated. This problem only happens after the computer has been running for a period of time longer than 20 minutes or so.

Do not change the default options on scan resultsSome types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatical... I have windows 7 and IE8. AVG and malware are clean. I have tried upgrading to IE9 and even disconnected AVG trying to make a connection. I connect to the web with my Verizon MiFi, but had
the same problem when I have cable.

I am unable to get onto 2 websites, york photo and corccnny.org. Otherwise, I can go onto any website. I don't understand what is stopping me from making the connection. I type in the web address, it states it is waiting for a responce to yorkphoto, than I get a " OOPS! Internet explorer could not conne3ct to www.yorkphoto.com".

I have called york photo who has no idea what the problem is. I connected my church (corccnny.org) and they are clueless. I called verizon and they told me something about they are not sure, but it
might have to do with the numbers of the IP address.

What is happening? I can get on them with my phone, but that won't help me upload my pictures to
york!

Any suggestions? I am desperate for help please tell me what is blocking this. Thanks for any help.

hi,I am having a problem with my wireless connection. I noticed a huge drop in the speed of the browsing. When I do a speed test , the results are 1/6 of the true speed that I should get. When I investigated further, I noticed that the wireless connection is not stable. That is , I get lots of time outs when I ping the router. (see Pic)http://img64.imageshack.us/i/wirelessproblem2.jpg/I saw some other post with the same problem, but mine is a bit different as I don't really get disconnected from the router and my IP never changes. I tried1) updated driver2) checked that the problem is not from the router (WRT120N) using another laptop3) tried the test in safemode with networking.. same time out results4) static IP didn't work Could this be a hardware failure? as I noticed this problem only after the mainboard has been replaced by Lenovo due to a VGA failure. Suggestion are welcome RegardsAnas

We have two computers here, a desktop and a laptop connected to a wireless network via a Netgear router which is connected to the internet. Most of the time, accessing the internet is easy enough, however sometimes, the internet will cut out for a few minutes on my laptop.

When this happens I've checked to see if the internet is accessible on the desktop and it is.

Other members of my family have complained about similar cut-outs while using the desktop computer.

Any ideas what the problem may be?

I'm at college and every 10 minutes or so, the internet connection goes down for like 30 seconds or so, and then it comes back up. I talked with the technology department guy, and he said it happens because people have routers (both wired or wireless ones) hooked up in their dorms and that they are improperly configured.

I was wondering how routers in peoples dorms can cause such drop outs on the whole dorm's internet connection (nearly everyone in the dorm experiences these drop outs). Could anyone enlighten me?

Answer:Routers causing drop outs on college network?

I wouldn't be supprised if a few of the people have their routers plugged up to the LAN port and are in turn, hosting DHCP servers on the lan. As such, people are probably getting all kinds of IP conflicts.

Hi,

At 2:24 am each night, my computer freezes. I have tried to look in my Event Viewer but cannot see anything that sticks out. I was hoping that you folks might be able to help.

I have been using HJT, AdAware, Microsoft AntiSpyware, NAV and Spybot but to no avail. Here is my HJT log:

Answer:XP Freezes Each Night at Same Time!

Hello TheFloydSW and welcome to TSF,

How long ago did this problem start?

I'm not seeing anything in the log, plese do the following:

Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Standard CleanUp!"
*Uncheck the following:
-Delete Newsgroup cache
-Delete Newsgroup Subscriptions
-Scan local drives for temporary files
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.
Note: CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! If you have a 64 bit Operating System do NOT run Cleanup and let me know as we will use another utility

Please run an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm *Requires Internet Explorer.
Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
Click On 'Scan Now'
Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now'... Read more

Sorry if this is the wrong forum. Every night at 11:30 my cable internet connection is lost. It comes back on after about a minute and everything is fine. This is the only time of the day that I have noticed this problem.

I am running XP Pro with SP1. I run AdAware and Spybot a couple times a week, and I use Norton AV as well as AVG Free. I also recently set up Zone Alarm Firewall. This problem was there before ZA though. I also do not have any scheduled tasks set at this time.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Internet connection goes away every night, same time

Your cable modem or network hub (if you have one) could be set to allow connections 23 hours and 59 minutes. this would disconnect you and then after the minute is up it would reconnect you. My wireless router does this at 11:59pm every night. I don't beleive there is anyway around it.

Every night between 8pm and 10pm the game I play, Perfect world international and Arc the launcher stops working. I cant load website or get onto game , once it gets to 10.05pm it works fine again. Everything else on the net works fine. I contacted their tech department and the reply is...That's odd. It doesn't appear to be a latency thing, as pings are decent along the way, but the connection appears to be dying just outside our network. The next time the connection goes out like this can you try pinging the server directly, then launching the game and see what is happening? I'm at a loss as to what's going on with your connection. The fact that it happens at the same time every day clearly makes it a connection issue, but the times don't match up with anything on our end .. so I ran the ping test when I couldn't get on and it was

I am in canada now, im from the usa. When i first got here, the internet wifi was very bad at that place. I then went to another apartment and was told internet wifi here was very fast and reliable. The wifi is fast and reliable here... however, sometimes it does disconnect a bit and a bit slow but thats not a big problem usually.
Well i had noticed something very strange. The last week or so i went to bed pretty late and am online. I noticed that at exactly 3:40am... the wifi immediately disconnects and when i click on the internet icon in the bottom right to look for the internet connection... its no longer there. There are 2 wifi internet names/routers in this building that i live in and i was told they have 2 of them in case one of them have a problem, i connect to the other. Lets call them wireless connection a and b. Wireless A is very fast and reliable. B isn't that reliable and many times you can't connect to it though but its still okay. During the day seems to be good but Wireless A is faster than B so i stick with that one.
Anyways, at around 3:40am... wifi goes off. Check the wireless connections... both of them are gone. So i cannot connect to any wireless internet connection at all. I see some other wifi networks but of course thats someone elses and i cannot connect to it b/c u need a passcode for it.
The next day or so, i went to bed pretty late so just going online. Same thing... 3:40am... wifi goes off and when you search for the wifi connect... Read more

Every night, at exactly 2:00am my computer starts slowing down, taking forever to open programs, any video playing will begin to skip and get choppy, even switching to AIM from the task bar takes forever. When it happens I look at the taskbar and there appears to be no major programs running, usually just AIM and McAfee. And when I go to current system processes neither are using CPU power, the only thing that has high CPU usage is "System Idle Process" which I don't know what that means. I thought it might be Windows Update but I've disabled it. It is annoying because i usually stay up late and it gets so slow at this exact same time. Resetting the computer seems to work and make it normal but is there a way I can find out why it gets so slow every time at 2:00am?

Answer:Computer slows down at same time every night

Something is kicking in, maybe it's a virus scan sheduled for that time, or virus updates. Those are my two guesses. Windows Defender is set to do auto scans at 2:00am, as is another virus/malware protection program, but I can't remember which one! If you have Defender installed check it's scheduler. It doesn't have an icon in the system tray by default, you have to go in and change the settings to show the icon, so you may not know that it's running. It's listed in processes as MSAScui.exe.

When I get up, or even wake through the nightI can see that it hase come back on even while in another room as the screen will be lighting up the room. The screen / monitor would just be left to go on stand-by which I prefer rather than actually switching it OffWhat has caused this and how can I stop it?My laptop which uses Win7 also, is OK an will not do this.HP Computer, Intel i5, using Win7.Thanks

Probably a program updating itself , or Windows checking for updates , something like that would be enough to wake a sleeping PC . Ashley

Every night usually between 8-10pm my DSL goes down. This has been going on for several months now (never happens during the day). I have replaced the DSL modem and my NIC card. Sometimes I can power cycle the modem and it will bring it back up, somethings that doesn't work. My modem is connected to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router which is very secure. I have called Earthlink about this issue numerous times ... and I have spoken with Linksys ... but the problem goes on!!!

Can the Norton Log ... or any other log on my system help me figure out what is going on? Does this seem like a problem with the local telephone company that Earthlink rents space from?

Your thoughts/ideas would be most welcomed!!! I would like to end my frustration on this issue!

I have had my old pentium 4, for years.

I put windows 7 on it with more memory, upgraded GPU & added a wireless 802.11n network card.

I have tried the on board P4C8000 (asus) audio as well as 2 different sound cards from 'creative', but no matter what I do I get this audio interference and I suppose it resembles the popping and cracking of the static on a vinyl LP record when the styli hits the deck and spins!

I have tried several different tracks with different headphones and it is always the same!

Anyone got any ideas please?

PS: On any given recording, the sound is distorted, like if you record a cassette tape with the volume right up high causing saturation. However, all the faders (in windows) are set to about 50% max. as is my headset volume.

I've just noticed that when I play a high quality audio CD ROM (purchased, not downloaded poor quality internet junk) the interference seems to be in time with the transmission LED on the 802.11n network card. There are about six PCI slots on the back of the case but even when I put the network card at the very bottom and the sound card at the very top (slot) the network cards aerials are always within 6 inches of the headset cable and are often right between the aerials. Does anyone know if a local network can cause this to happen and is there a solution please? i.e. drop outs/skipping/stuttering etc?

Answer:audio drop outs/skipping caused by 802.11n wireless network card?

Wi-Fi is a known cause of popping and crackling. If you must have a wireless connection have you tried disabling the wireless controller when you play audio? to verify that is the problem. That would be the first step in trying to resolve the problem.

Each morning when I wake up, my computer is on, rather than in sleep mode, as I left it. I have disabled the power of the mouse to wake it. What else can I try to fix this problem?

Answer:computer wakes from sleep at night time

Check all likely devices in Device Manager to see what their power management settings are. Also it could be MS updates taking place, or in my case a cat walking across my keyboard at night when keyboard wake up was enabled.

There is a program on my PC that runs every night at exactly 11:02 PM, but it does not show up in Task Scheduler. The reason I know it runs is because there is a tiny window that pops up in the top left corner of the monitor and then disappears very quickly. I have tried to see what it is, but it is impossible. It happens too fast for me to catch what the window says. Is there a catalog in Windows that I can use to see what opens at a particular time? I guess it is showing up in Task Manager, and I have tried to identify the process, but there are too many. I have researched them, but that hasn't helped, because I am not getting enough information about some of them.

Thanks in advance for any and all help

pls give me some point if you can help me ,thanks

Answer:Satellite P300-133 restart in the same time every night

Hi

I doubt there is something wrong with your notebook.
Is the notebook connected to LAN?
If yes then the enabled Wake up on LAN option could be the reason why the notebook powers on itself?

So access the BIOS and disable this option;
Furthermore I recommend disabling this in device manger -> LAN properties -> Advanced tab.

Last but not least you should check if some ?Scheduled Tasks? are not set which could power up the notebook as well?

Greetings

Every morning for the past week and a half, I've gone into my office to discover that my monitor screen has gone black at some point during the night. This morning was different. It was stuck on the reboot stating "windows is shutting down". Each time I have to do a hard reboot. The computer runs fine throughout the rest of the day. I first made sure my drivers were updated and ran a couple of malware scans, which indicated my system was clean. I checked my system log in event viewer and found that every morning at 3:30AM my system tries to reboot after Microsoft tries to install KB970430.

Here are the events:

------
3:00:35 AM Windows XP Hotfix KB970430 was installed.

3:00:41 Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes:
- Update for Windows XP (KB970430)

3:00:41 Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Update for Windows XP (KB970430)

3:15:36 The process winlogon.exe has initiated the restart of CHUCK for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found
Minor Reason: 0x2
Shutdown Type: reboot
-----

This is when my system gets hung up.

I disabled automatic updates for now, but would prefer that they work when I have them enabled.

Why is my system having trouble installing this update and why is it having such a difficult time restarting?

Thanks in advance!

Chuck

Pretty sure I've some form of Malware/Spyware. I can't seem to get it off, so here I am. It takes a long time to shut down, my start bar theme will change back to default on occasion as well. My browser is being hijacked to a site which claims I've won a Walmart gift card. Also, my Google results are being redirected. If I'm in my browser for long enough, suddenly I won't be able to pull up new websites, everything stops loading, although my computer says I'm still connected to the internet, (says that the server took too long to respond) and a restart is necessary. What formular can i use to determine the number of night consultations from time column of number of visits in one month.Night consults is anytime between 18:00hrs to 06:00hrs, 06:00hrs to 18:00hrs are regular day consults

Answer:Determine Number of Night Consultations from time entered

There may be a shorter method, but this seems to work:=SUMPRODUCT((HOUR(A1:A25)>=16)*(HOUR(A1:A25)<=23))+SUMPRODUCT((HOUR(A1:A25)>=0)*(HOUR(A1:A25)<=6))The first SUMPRODUCT determines the number of Times whose Hour is >=16 and <=23.The second SUMPRODUCT determines the number of Times whose Hour is >=0 and <=6.Summing those 2 values should give you the result you are looking for.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

About a month ago I made the mistake of allowing windows 7 to update, which I do maybe once a year, which had the same consequences it always does, it ****s my graphics drivers. Normally I just pop my VGI cable into my integrated graphics card, uninstall my graphics drivers and reinstall them straight from AMD's website. This time that has not worked and now around 4 am every day my computer crashes. I actually slept through an exam because my computer also functions as my alarm clock.

Answer:BSOD same time every night since Windows Update, GPU related

Hey chalkbrood, Welcome to Sevenforums.

Lets start by updating your BIOS. There have been several updates since the version you have.

New version = 3603 Yours is 3201

Motherboards - P8Z68-V/GEN3 - ASUS

After this, its going to take a while for me to go over all of your programs that you have on your PC... Its A LOT. My biggest recommendation would be to start over and perform a clean install. If thats not an option...

You have Daemon Tools/Alcohol 52% which can cause BSODs and sometimes carry malware/spyware. Second, I haven't looked at all your programs like I said but just by skimming through a bunch of red flags go up. In startup you have some odd Google Chrome startups and upd.exe which is sometimes associated with a Trojan. It doesn't help that you're running McAfee security because it's garbage.

At a minimum for now..

Download Revouninstaller (Always use Advanced Option > Select All entries found on each screen and delete them)
Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Please remove McAfee, Alcohol 52%/Daemon Tools, and any other programs you've installed that you don't need. There is something showing up in your programs with a bunch of weird characters. If it is present when you scan with Revo, remove it.

Download and install, then scan with Microsoft Security Essentials.
Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

Download and run Malwarebytes (Click Custom Scan, C... Read more

Hello again, I'm running Windows7 Home premium on a Compaq laptop. I was completely satisfied with performance for months [it was FAST compared to my old desktop running WinXP]. Recently I've begun experiencing frequent "time outs." The little "busy" circle pops up and spins and the screen turns to a semi-opaque white. The busy circle spins for 15 - 20 seconds during which NOTHING will happen. I've tried to identify the problem with both Task manager and What's Running and I've looked online for clues, but no joy so far. Again, this is a relatively recent occurrence. Here's the result copied from running TSG SysInfo: Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.1 OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium , Service Pack 1, 64 bit Processor: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 900 @ 2.20GHz, Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10 Processor Count: 1 RAM: 1978 Mb Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, 797 Mb Hard Drives: C: Total - 223876 MB, Free - 173763 MB; D: Total - 14293 MB, Free - 2363 MB; E: Total - 99 MB, Free - 95 MB; Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard, 1484, 77.38 Antivirus: Norton Security Suite, Updated and Enabled Any help would be TRULY appreciated!

After many times of changing configuration, I still coundn't understand why my Wireless becomes quite slow after the sun set, though it is just in the range of an apartment (80m2). In the day time it gets the full-speed (I have cable internet :1024/256), but at night I have to wait 1 minute to see the homepage of Google.
The most suspect reason could be : there is another guy using also a wireless network in his apartment ,cause I saw the network name in the "available network",but this network always appears in my list all day, not just only at night. So I think, maybe after work this guy comes back home and turn on his computer making interfere with my network, is that true ?
So how can i work this problem out ?
Thx in advance.

Not EXACTLY every other night, but it seems that way.

This is my office machine, Dell Studio XPS 8100, purchased October 2010:

- Win7 x64 Pro
- Core i7 Quad 870 2.93 GHz
- 12 GB DDR3 SDRAM
- ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB

This is in an office with a Server 2003 machine as the domain controller, and all machines in the office log onto the domain.

Typically in the evening I log off my machine, but leave the machine running (for updates, etc). Quite a few times over the past few weeks, I come in the next day, log on, and see the message "Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown".

In the Event Viewer, it looks like it's happening as a result of something called "bugcheck" running. It happened Friday night, based on the following messages:

Event 6008 8:58:37 PM "The previous system shutdown at 8:49:11 PM on ‎12/‎17/‎2010 was unexpected."

Event 1001 8:58:39 PM "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x000000fe (0x0000000000000005, 0xfffffa800d6501a0, 0x0000000080863b3c, 0xfffffa800de6f8a0). A dump was saved in: C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 121710-21028-01."

I logged off on Friday about 5:04 PM, and I know there was a Windows Update installed just after 7 PM.

Graphics driver is up to date. Not sure about the BIOS. What could be causing this bugcheck crash?

Answer:System crash at night every other night past 2 weeks

Last night my newly aquired c460 all in one just lost connection to my router. Was working flawlessly with full signal and great speed, then disconnected and can not connect to the router although it can see it. I can access the internet to update drivers out anything like that, although I don't think that drivers are the issue as it was working with no issues and suddenly can no longer connect. I bought the computer used so I have done a hard reset after among other things in an attempt to fix the issue but still same problem. Sees router, asked me to enter parade (which I know is correct) attempts to connect but then says can't connect to this network. I'm running Windows 8.1 I believe and have turned off the McAfee firewall. I have no idea what to try now. Thanks in advance

Hi. I have no more ideas on what to try next. Any help greatly appreciated. My laptop is running Windows 7 Professional 32bit and is fully patched. The Ethernet adapter (Marvell Yukon 88E8055) is enabled and the wireless adapter (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG) disabled (via software and the hardware switch). Symantec Endpoint Protection provides AV/security (via group policy). It is highly likely the problem was self inflicted and not caused by a virus / malware.I use the cisco VPN client and wanted to upgrade it (a reinstall may have been sufficient but as I was going to the bother I thought I would upgrade) as I was having some annoying timeouts when using the client immediately after logging into my desktop.I started by removing the existing (old version 5.0.05.0290). During the removal the screen went black and the laptop was not responding; ie I couldnt get the screen to wake up. I ended up powering off by holding the power button for 5 secs. On reboot, it appeared that the old vpnclient (5.0.05.0290) had been removed and everything else was functioning as normal. have 40 to 50 systems running 2K prof. I'd like to lock them out from being able to surf the net. I figure it can be done several different ways. I'm new with this company, and am just now learning their enviroment.

There are 3 different locations. Each site, has it's own 2K small biz server running.

They have no group policies in effect as well.

Where would you begin, or what would be the easiest solution, all the while providing some scaleability?

Thanks for the help

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

Hello I was using the night mode option available on Lenovo Settings, which then had a option to turn it on or off. After Windows 10 updated, Windows now has a night mode option, but the Lenovo Settings one is still working and I can't deactivate it because there is no longer a option. At night, the screen become so red all the black parts on the screen look like blood.  Removing Lenovo Settings solve this, but I need the configurations available on Lenovo Settings, so I can't uninstall it.  Is there a way to deactivate the Lenovo Settings night mode after this update, knowing there is no longer the toggle option in the interface? A configuration file or registry I should remove or a command I should use? Thank you.

Hello,

I am running genuine Windows XP, SP3.
My OS gets frequently locked, within 1 minutes of having no activity(mouse or keyboard).

I have checked the Sceensaver timer, but it is of no help.

I want to increase the computer lock timer as per my preference, but do not find this option anywehere.

Is there any registry setting or so, or if it has anything to do with group policy or anything.

I just keep unlocking my PC after no activity for 1 minute, makes it really difficult for me to read any article or e-book.

Please help.

Thank You,
Saurabh.

Anyone else seeing this issue? If I put my tablet into standby when I wake it I don't get the lock screen and it just goes straight to the start screen or whatever app I was using. If I put it into standby again then I'll get the lock screen the next time I wake it but then the next time it won't appear again. I've checked and it's literally every other time.

Hi,

I looking for a way to limit time on the PC - auto lock Windows after 30 minutes, even (and especially) when the computer is not idle.
When the user will log back into Windows by entering the Windows password, the counter will start again from 30 minutes.

The app should start automatically and silent with Windows, and the user should not be able to stop this app without a password.

Thanks, Nir.

Hi there,

Since I got my current PC I've had an issue where it would occassionally completely lock-up, i.e. completely still image on screen, mouse wouldn't move, and it also put out a buzzing sound through the speakers/headphones. The only option was to force shutdown and start it up again. But it didn't happen that often so I wasn't bothered by it much.

However since updating to Windows 8 it is now happening about 15 minutes into use every time I turn the PC on (but after rebooting doesn't happen again until the next time I turn it on), so I'm looking for a solution now.

Has anyone seen something like this, or got any advise?

Thanks.

WOW!! Exactly what I'm seeing!!!

Usually occurs within 15 minutes of booting. Once a day only. I've had the computer off over 8 hours one day and when turned on it didn't happen... only the FIRST boot of the day. Works fine on any reboots after?

I have gotten random different BSOD's too.

I've also had days at a time when this didn't happen? I did nothing at all to change anything either. Then it starts happening again?

Things I have tried though:

Removed ANY unnecessary programs I had. This computer started with Vista, upgraded to W7, then W8 (when it started happening) and now W8.1, so I did collect a lot of 'junk'.
Stopped AutoStarting anything I didn't really need or could manually start later.

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Thanks

Answer:Lock Screen Slideshow Time Out

Never mind. I went into the Registry and checked it out.

Yes, the same exact rules apply here like in Windows 8.1

Not very descriptive, but so the computer goes.

Lets say I am updating a blog. And I refresh a number of times, once for each post.

Not always the same amount of refreshes, but eventually I get the spinner upper right, and the status bar says either 'Done' or 'Stopped'.

If I check email, first time fine. I close email. Over the next 2-5 hours, I open email again, close again, open again, Mozilla Thunderbird newest version, and it says cannot connect. The number of times it will work and then stop, varies.

To fix either, I reboot, no need to do anything else, and they work fine again.

I get the impression that if I have to connect to anything outside my home computer, this occurs. I haven't tried all software, but it happens with email, both browsers, and connecting to Everquest.

So it isn't just one type of site/server. Just anything outside my home computer. I'm the only user and admin.

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

I like having my monitor power off soon after activity stops. Currently, I have it powering off after 2 minutes of inactivity. I am also very big on locking my PC when I step away. So, I also have the screen saver kick in after 2 minutes. (Of course, I never even see a screen saver because the monitor is off. And, in fact, my screen saver is set to "None". So this setting essentially means the PC is set to lock after 2 minutes.)

However, what often happens is that I'm sitting at the PC, and the monitor turns off, but I don't want it to lock. I move the mouse, and it's locked--even if I intervened within a second or two.

With Windows XP, I used to be able to use the ScreenSaverGracePeriod registry value to work around this. I've tried this with my Windows 8 system, but it doesn't work. I have tried using ScreenSaverGracePeriod as both REG_SZ and as DWORD.

Is there any way to delay the PC from locking after the monitor powers off by just a few seconds? I know I can have the monitor power off after 2 minutes but set the screen saver to 3 minutes, but I'd like to reduce the delay to a matter of seconds, if that is possible.

Answer:Delay the time between monitor off and workstation lock?

Hello Crosspatch,

I suppose one way would be to disable screen saver password protection to prevent it from basically locking the PC and asking for a password when you resume from screen saver.
Screen Saver Password Protection -Enable or Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums
The only drawback is that you would then need to lock the PC when you do want it to be password protected when unlocking. If you like, the desktop context menu added by either tutorial below can help make it easier to lock the PC.
Lock Computer and Turn Off Monitor - Add to Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

I have 2 week old HP pavalion notebook pc with pre-installed Windows 8.1 64bit single language. Untill few days back, when i presses windows+L the lock screen would pop up immediately. But now whenever i do it, it takes time to lock.

I clocked it and it took approx 30-35 sec to lock. I am not sure what might be the problem or if this is  al all normal behaviour. Have to look at 'Please wait' screen for 30 sec to get lock screen image.

I am running Windows 10 on my two home computers (laptop and desktop), and it drives me crazy that the console locks after 5 minutes and we have to enter a PIN to wake it back up. My wife has pretty much stopped using the laptop because she can't stand it. I had figured out how to disable it in Windows 8.1, but it appears they removed the option to add that to the settings in Windows 10. I have been searching the interwebs for days to try and find a solution posted somewhere and I am really surprised by the lack of complaints about this. I can't believe we're the only ones who find it maddeningly annoying. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions about what to do?
Thanks,
Nate

Basically, I have some people that would jump at the chance to hop onto an Administrator's account due to the restrictions they have. That being said, even if I leave my notebook alone for 5 minutes, I want the darn thing locked.

Just due to the fact I personally like a couple of the new Vista screensavers, is there a way to both lock and immediately start the screensaver?

Answer:Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Not sure why the screensaver would play into it, but whatever.

Set the screensaver to require a password on resume (even if the screensaver doesn't kick in automagically this is the proper setting), and press Windows+L anytime to lock the workstation immediately.

Hope this helps...

So, I have searched the internet for what I am trying to find but the only thing that comes up is how to add a timer that will turn the display off after a certain time WHILE the lock-screen is on. That's not what I am asking.

What I am asking is if there is a way to auto-lock the computer after a certain amount of time. I know you can activate a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and then once touched again it will show up at the lockscreen. That's not what I want. I have the lock-screen setup to play a slideshow of pictures that I want to play when not in use. (This is a 58" touchscreen display that is used to interact with a powerpoint presentation in a public area). If I leave the desktop screensaver option on, it'll turn off the lockscreen slides. Why does that matter if the slideshow is running you may be asking? Well, I have a script on the desktop of this computer that will lock the computer with a single click. This is because when someone is done doing a presentation, I want them to be able to lock the screen immediately so that when they walk away someone can't just walk by and start messing with a wide-open computer.

So, idk if this is possible or if someone has a better solution but i'd appreciate any input.

The whole thing started to appear around 3 days ago. The problem is that everytime I boot, windows 10 stays on a weird lock screen without any buttons for a long long time. There are just 4 icons in the bottom right corner (shut down, accesibility, ethernet...) It sometimes manages to get to desktop, and sometimes not. Not sure what caused it, could be a recent windows update, not sure tho. I ran some HDD scans and everything turned out fine, also did a registry cleanup, tried disabling lock screen, and nothing seems to work. Any suggestions or solutions?

Answer:Windows 10 stuck at lock screen for a long time

Welcome to the TenForums @Taukonza

Could you please review your update history and see if any updates for Windows or Drivers were installed in last week?

You mentioned when you boot. Not sure if this is happening on restart or power on or both. If it is power on booting can I suggest a quick test. Open a command prompt (admin) and type

powercfg -h off

This will disable hibernation and in turn Fast Startup. Test. If no change you can re-enable by typing

powercfg -h on

After you boot have you reviewed your Event Viewer to see if Windows is kicking out any serious errors to the system log?

As the title says, I couldn't find it anywhere, but I was looking to have it so that after a set period of time Windows will automatically lock out the user (me). I'm not talking about having a screensaver come up, but I've seen it before, where it basically looks like the logon screen of XP, where you have to click on your name to go back into Windows, and type in your password again.

Can someone direct me to where I set this option? I thought it'd be in the standard haunts, but I don't see it anywhere.

Thanks!

Answer:Having windows lock-out after time (requiring password) but not screensaver

I've not seen this done outside the screensaver options, but this link has another option.

Reading more, I think what you really want is the screensaver option, but use the logon.scr with password enabled.
