SL500 - UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) not working

Question: SL500 - UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) not working

Hi, I just purchased a SL500 from Lenovo. The UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) is not working. I have installed the drivers via the Lenovo website but still not working. I have always done all the windows updates, and Thinkvantage system updates, but still no joy. I also installed the UtraNav Utility (which does not even show up under Thinkvantge after installation). Fn+F8 brings up the Mouse properties box, but there is no tab for the UltraNav device etc. I want to try a possible resolution via this forum before contacting Lenovo support. Thanks for your assistance! ***lenovo SL500, Vista Business 32***

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: SL500 - UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) not working

Installing drivers from lenovo website was kind of tricky for me, initially. All I used to do was to run the setup.exe file; until someone told me that the drivers gets extracted in another folder in C:\. The installation instructions are given on lenovo website, make certain you are not making the same mistake like me:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-70341.html Else, I fancy the keyboard might have gone bad, contact lenovo in that case. Hope it helps.

I'm having a problem with my X201 tablet where when I switch from tablet to notebook the touchpad and trackpoint are disabled.  I'm unable to enable them as the boxes are grayed out in the Ultranav tab of the Mouse Control Panel option.  The only way to correct this is to uninstall then reinstall the touchpad driver and ultranav software.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Answer:UltraNav trackpoint and touchpad disabled after switching from tablet to notebook

hey manthei2,do a crosscheck with the current touchpad and ultranav driver version that you have with our support site. if yours is a lower version kindly download the latest and install it.curious to know, when did this issue start ?

Hi there, I have a weird problem. First, I am running Windows 7 beta (build 7100) on my T60 (type 2007), so that could be the reason, and I assume it's probably software related in any case. But anyway, in case some of you have experience with the problem, here goes. The other day the mouse buttons on my UltraNav, for no apparant reason, stopped functioning. The trackpoint is working fine as is the middle scroll-button and the touchpad. But I can't left or right-click. Both the buttons above and below the touchpad are gone. Pretty weird, as the upper mouse buttons are connected through the keyboard-connector-cable and the touchpad and the buttons below that are connected via a seperate cable. I've checked the settings in the UltraNav tab and they're ok, and I'm using the latest driver (9137), and have tried reinstalling it.No luck. Any ideas - besides reinstalling/downgrading Windows, which I'll probably do anyway if nothing else helps?

I grabbed the 5/2011 drivers for UltraNav from the Lenovo site and it appears that an option 'to disable the integrated pointing devices when an external pointing device is present' does not exist, or at the very least I can't easily find it.  Please please please please tell me I'm simply being dense and this behavior is very easy to enable. Seriously, the 5-year old Dell drivers I had with my old machine did that, and this is driving me BONKERS. Alternatively, if what I'm doing here is feature-requesting, I'd be like 50% there if I could Fn+F8 and have an option to kill both the touchpad and the trackpoint - alas, I can disable 1 or the other BUT NOT BOTH WITH THAT OPTION.  Can I really not disable both? Lenovo W520, Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Answer:Option to disable UltraNav (touchpad + trackpoint) when external mouse is connected

I've never seen such a feature with the UltraNav drivers. You could just max out the PalmCheck and then set it to touchpad only.

For some reason randomly when I turn on my computer after it gets done loading Windows XP (gets to the log in menu) my T60 ThinkPad Laptop's mouse will no longer work.  After I restart it then it seems to work fine.  I can't find any specific drivers for it to download to try and resolve this issue either.  Any ideas? Also, this laptop was used by someone before me and they formatted the harddrive so I lost my ThinkVantage restore stuff so I can't restore the laptop to its factory settings.  Is there a place I can download that or at least set it up by hand? I am hoping if I have that option it will fix the mouse issue as well.  Thanks!

Answer:T60 UltraNav and TrackPoint not working after boot up

Hello, please go to Lenovo support page. And download MS NET 2.0 and System Updater. First I would suggest to update only your ultranav driver, for trackpoint and touchpad. But donīt update all at once and be aware, also bios updates, which may be not necessary are offered there. If you are in warranty till now, try to call Lenovo hotline and they might send you the R&R discs for free.Otherwise you have to pay.  Message Edited by Agotthelf on 02-12-2008 08:16 AM

Got a strange one on my X201T.  For some reason I can't fathom, my laptop's Trackpoint, Touchpad and all their associated buttons do not work when I log into my laptop - they did before but in the last few days, they've stopped.  My external USB still works fine when connected. However, if, for example, I do 'ctrl-alt-del' and lock the laptop, they start working again until the moment I'm logged back in.  Also, If I log in on a Guest account, they all work fine!  This suggests it's not the hardware, I think. I've looked at the Control Panel / Mouse dialogue and the options under the UltraNav tab are all greyed out - but they are not on the Guest account.  Somehow, my user account on the laptop is not allowing me to use the Trackpoint, etc. My external USB mouse works fine in all accounts, btw. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.  I've updated drivers through Lenovo update (though none seemed related to this problem). Any thoughts how I can fix this?

I recently took my SL500 to a local repair shop to get that notorious left hinge repaired. After picking it up, at some point, I noticed that my TrackPoint wasn't working anymore. The TrackPad is functioning perfectly, though. I opened it up and looked at the connectors and all seems fine in there. I've also updated drivers. Any thoughts? I'd prefer not to sink any more money in this machine (e.g. buying a new keyboard) if possible. Thanks in advance!

Hi, Problem occurs after waking from sleep or standby or hibernate, and alternatively  or right click on ultranav right button (it opens context menu). Then my left click is disabled. The cursor is either frozen or not. For the freeze there seems to be no rule, but the left click is always disabled. I have formatted the windows, installed new drivers and utility programs and also new bios. The same problem occurs every time.I have Windows 7 x64 I have seen many posts for issues with TP trackpoints and trackpads, but no resolution as of yet. If I am wrong, please point me in the right direction.

Trackpoint + dragging is still not working with the Ultranav middle button as of 16.2.19.2 driver. It's an extremely important function for any 3D graphics program. With the Lenovo driver it's not possible to use the middle button + trackpoint to navigate in these programs! Lenovo, please fix this bug. It's working perfectly if I install the latest Synaptics driver. It's only happening with Lenovo's driver. Using Synaptics driver is not an option, because it has no guard against keyboard typing + touchpad accidental clicking. Test:Testing is very easy.1. Set your middle button behaviour to "None".2. Above an empty area of your desktop, click the middle button + try to move the mouse pointer with your trackpoint. The pointer isn't moving! It's the same thing what happens in any 3D graphics program! You cannot navigate your camera, unless you use an external mouse! Fix:Please fix it. Just don't stop the trackpoint pointer when someone clicks the middle button in "None" settings. System: Using a W520 for the reference.

Answer:Trackpoint + middle button dragging still not working in Ultranav 16.2.19.2 driver

I am not a professional CAD user, but I too want to be able to use the middle button as if it were a normal mouse. There is a lot of software that utilize the middle mouse button and can't handle the silly scroll feature. Did you find a work around? You mentioned something about Synaptics.

After some recent UltraNav driver updates I have lost cursor and use of the trackpad and trackpoint. The yellow triangle shows up in device manager as the drivers cannot identify the hardware. I've tried uninstall/reinstall and rolling back to older drivers to no avail. This happened originally after an update on 1/26. I had to uninstall drivers, cleaned registrty keys, ran windows update, ran TVSU to reinstall drivers and that worked for a week. Then another update pushed on 2/9 knocked out the Trackpad again.  The device in enabled in both the control panel and BIOS. Disable/Reboot/Enable did not work. Rollback of drivers to 2 or 3 previous versions did not work. Thankfully I have the touch screen or my 15 month old T440 would be entirely useless. Anyone have similar issues and/or solution??

Hi all, I have a problem with my Thinkpad Edge S430. After reinstalling Windows 7, System update and all drivers, my trackpoint doesn't work. Itīs disabled and there is no way of getting it to work. I have unistalled, cleaned the registry and reinstalled the driver from the official driver web page, from within system update,... no way.  The other problem is with the SD Reader. I use a 32Gb SD card for backup purposes and a week ago simply itīs like the reader does not exist anymore. The devide administrator does have all drivers installed, but the reader is not working (of course, I have checked that the card is working and with all data in other PC). I have also unistalled and installed the driver, but again no way. Any help is really welcome. Thanks in advance,

Answer:Ultranav trackpoint not working, SD reader vanished. Thinkpad EDGE S430

Hi, petodow

For the TrackPoint issue, I would try installing the Synaptics driver from here. Synaptics is the company that makes UltraNav, so there shouldn't be any loss of functionality.

As for the SD card reader, there is a BIOS update that was released five days ago that may help. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

But the left buttons are still not working after a few days have passed... Both the left buttons above and below the touch pad are not working. Is there a solution to this problem? Neither Touchpad/TrackPoint are working on my R60. I was using it fine about 2 hours ago. Then I drove home when it was in sleep mode, and since it hasn't worked. I have tried to install the latest drivers from System Update under the blue button and also from Lenovo and still didn't work. When I go to check and make sure they are enabled all I get is this:UltraNav has been disabled in BIOS.So when I go to BIOS, it says that it is automatic. There are only 2 options for them. Automatic and Disabled. So what the heck is going on here? Thanks,Mac

Welcome to the forum! Try reverting BIOS to default settings (F9 once you enter it and F10 to save and exit) to see whether that changes anything. Good luck and let us know.

Is it showing in device manager? If so is it showing that there is a problem? Is the ultranav software working? If not you could try re-installing the ultranav software or rolling back the drivers if everything shows that it is fine. Good luck.

Hi, I've got this problem for a couple of days now, but I can't resolve it. I got this laptop since 2 weeks now, and everything worked fine, but all of the sudden I noticed my touchpad isn't working anymore. Already tried:Reinstalling the UltraNav driversPushing Fn+F8, as said in many cases, although this wasn't expected to work. I got aeroplane mode under Fn+F8.Opening the UltraNav settings, but I don't get the window as in this link. Instead I get this.Updating the BIOS.Check whether they might be disabled in the BIOS, but both the trackpoint and touchpad are enabled.Delete the device drivers and restart windows.Go to a previous recovery point on which it was known to work.Bring the windows back to factory settings, removing all files.So..But still: it doesn't work. Funny to see is that when I open the system tray icon setup, I can see the UltraNav tray icon and it says "TouchPad = Pointer, TrackPoint = Disabled". Could anybody help me with this?  Edit: while writing this message it mysteriously started working again after reinstalling Windows again and configuring the newest updates for Hotkey. Only now, this happened to me this afternoon as well, but it stopped working again after the external screen was detached and the usb of the wireless mouse was disconnected. Therefore I still post this message for it will probably happen again. Any help on how it could all have started? And more importantly: how it can be stopped?

Hi All, I am very upset as my new x61's TrackPoint and Touchpad Button are not working at all... This is my first Thinkpad Notebook. I really have no idea why is that? I have downloaded and installed the driver for Trackpoint and system reboots. And i update the drive from device manager. But the problem still existed.... I am so disappointed... Is there anyone have the same problem? Or can someone give me some help on this!??? By the way, i am using vista business version of OS.... Thanks J.

Answer:TrackPoint and touchpad button are not working, HELP~~~

Wowzer J, that sounds frustrating. It is odd if you have a brand new X61 that the TrackPoint is not working. Did you just buy it from Lenovo? What exactly do you mean by "not working at all"? Even if the Lenovo drivers are not working, Vista includes drivers which will enable you to use the TrackPoint. One of the tricky things abou the Lenovo software downloads is that many of them require you to download, double click the downloaded software to extract it, then navigate to the extracted software folder to run the setup.exe to install it. The TrackPoint drivers first extract to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TRACKPT.V32. You have to go there to run setup.exe. I'm also assuming that you really have an X61 and mis-spoke when you mentioned Touchpad. The X61 does not have a touchpad.

Hello, I have bought a thinkpad l412 in january and suddenly the touchpad & trackpoint are not working. I've have tested under Win7 and Linux both are not working. On win7 when I press fn+f8 an alert appear and say that my ultranav driver is not installed. When I check in bios -> config -> keyboard / mouse -> there is nothing about ultranav or trackpad. Thanks for your help.

Answer:L412 - Touchpad & trackpoint not working

Hi and welcome to the forum m0g,

Check the internal cable and verify it's in place, if so, try reseating it, you can find keyboard and palmrest's removal instructions in the HMM or at lenovo's service video website.

Sometimes putting BIOS configuration to default values also helps.

Keep us updated.

T510: I had to fix the Yellow DC-Input which fell into the laptop. I removed the KB and KB bezel where the TouchPad sits. I did this using the Hardware Maintenance PDF from Lenovo. Now both the UltraNav pointer and pad do not work and are not recognized in device manger. The only way to get around is via a Microsoft USB Mouse. I am using the latest BIOS. I have tried disabling and rebooting, returning to automatic, uninstalling, taking out the battery and power cable, pressing the power switch for 10 seconds ? etc. etc. When I press Fn +F8 it tells me the driver is not installed, but Synaptics 16.2.19.9 is installed ?I checked both cables under magnification to see if they were damaged. I also looked at the sockets. No bent pins on any of the 4 parts.BTW: I have another T510 in the lab, also running Win 7 Pro 64bit. It works fine. I can connect or disconnect the MS USB mice ? nothing prevents Fn +F8 from working and both the pointer and pad work.I have searched the forum and the internet, nothing seems to work.Any ideas?

Recently got a new Carbon x1, and everything was working fine, but once I closed the laptop and when I woke it up neither TrackPoint nor touchpad was working. Reboots didn't help. Tried installing Synaptics drivers - it said there was no device for update. Device manager detects the touchpad as Microsoft mouse with corresponding drivers (screenshot attached).  Also tried installing update for TrackPoint from the drivers list, it said it needed a reboot to install, after reboot there was an error window that suggested trying once again, several times I saw this message.Anyone have this? Are there any possible solutions?(Searched on the forum, but the solutions were not for my case or didn't work)P.S. It would be kinda stupid for a $1500 laptop not to work because of a touchpad

So I have an Thinkpad Edge E520 and for some reason my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working completely last week. I have a wireless mouse, which I am still able to use, but I want to still be able to use my trackpoint and touchpad. When I go to the device manager for the mouse, I see that my laptop doesnt have the Ultranav thing anymore, and when I try to install the driver on my laptop, it still does not show. Another problem I have had with my laptop which may be in relation to this is that my keyboard is acting strange. It will work for a while, but it will then stop working. If i put the laptop to sleep, then wake it up, it will work again for a few more minutes then will stop. I have attempted to restore my computer to factory settings, but the problems still occur. Answer:Touchpad and trackpoint not working on an E530

Hi, Mhystique

There is a BIOS update that was released about two weeks ago that may be able to help the issue. This update can be found here. If that does not work, then the issue is likely hardware and the TouchPad will probably need to be replaced.

Best of luck. Let me know how it goes,Adam

So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

Hi.

Just in case here it is a pointer to the Support site of the X1 Carbon.
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/x1-carbon-help

I guess you have the 5th Gen, can you validate that?

What about the driver listed on the support site of the 5th Gen ? It seems to have some Synaptics driver and even some firmware update for it. Have you tried installing those ?

If you don't have the 5th Gen please specify the model to find the correct support site.

My boss has a Edge 15 laptop and her Touchpad nad Trackpoint stopped working for no apparent reason.  Is there a keybaord shotcut to enable these?  It is on automatic in the BIOS.  Pointer will not move at all with trackpoint and/or touchpad, works fine if i plug mouse into USB. Help please I am at a loss unless hardware failure.

Answer:Touchpad and Trackpoint stopped working

I have heard of this happening before and the cause was a cable that was not firmly connected under the palmrest.  Your best bet is to call Lenovo support and arrange to have the system sent back for repair.  If you're handy with such things, you could remove the palmrest and check to make sure that the ribbon cables are firmly seated onto the motherboard.

Hi all Can anyone help me diagnose a problem I'm having with a friends T410. The trackpoint and touchpad buttons have stopped working (both left and right click). I am forced to use the laptop with an external mouse. The trackpad and touchpoint themselves both work just can't click anything, I have tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing but that hasn't helped, have also run Hirens boot cd - Mini XP mode and the buttons don't work there either. Sounds like a hardware issue to me but would like a second opinion before I start pulling it apart! Many thanks Chris

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

I hope the above information helped you.

I have a Thinkpad T440S and have a problem that many have reported. The trackpoint and touchpad initially work upon bootup but then stop working after a few minutes.I believe I've tried everything (uninstall/reinstall drivers, replace keyboard, replace hard drive and do a complete reinstall of all software, update everything, etc etc etc). Nothing works and the only reason I can still use my computer is that a wireless mouse will work. It's time to get a new computer. I've bought Thinkpads for more than a decade but I still see this problem being reported for the T470 so Lenovo can't or won't bother to fix this. Any suggestions for a different brand and model? I do like the trackpoint so does that mean Dell is my only alternative?

Hi all. I've seen this issue posted about many times before and can't get a hold of lenovo. When I try to use the "contact us - email" page the link doesn't work!  I have a x250 I purchased in 2015. It has been working great until recently. I usually use the trackpoint and have the touchpad disabled. Recently it just stops working and the only way I can get the mouse to function again is by using an external standard mouse. When I go to mouse settings it doesn't even recognize that I have a touchpad/trackpoint, even after installing updated ULTRANAV drivers. This also extends to the keyboard, some days the keyboard will not work at all. The only thing I can do is restart 100 times and cross my fingers it works one time. I've tried moving the mouse at the login screen, pressing firmly on the touchpad, etc. Nothing works aside from the off chance it cooperates after restarting. So, I have updated drivers numerous times for windows 10 and yet my trackpoint/touchpad still seem to rarely work. I am out of a warranty on this so I'm not sure what to do. My boyfriend is suggesting a factory reset, does anyone think that will work or have any other ideas? Thanks.

Firstly I'll explain the freezing issue (this is now the 3rd time I've typed this, as the first two times my laptop froze before I finished!)I run my laptop with the battery at 100% and plugged in and that's fine; as is running it on battery. The problem arises when my battery is low and I plug it into recharge. Soon after it's running on a/c the screen will go black and only way to shut down is by holding the power button. If I try to restart it too soon, the indicator lights next to the power button will illuminate, but the screen will stay black. Usually after 5-10 minutes it'll boot to the IBM screen & boot the rest of the way, but not too long into normal operation it'll go black again (sometimes hitting ctrl/alt/del will bring the screen back but it would be very distorted (pixilized) and would go black again and reboot. What could be causing these problems while recharging the battery? I've tried this with a couple different batteries (both OEM IBM) and it does it with both.  Secondly, both left and right "mouse" buttons are now nonfunctional (though the middle button of the track points works.) I have the latest version of Ultranav Wizard and all the buttons are enabled. The touch pad and trackpoint ball work fine, just the 2 left and 2 right buttons do not. What could be the culprit for this issue? Luckily I have a usb mouse so that's what I'm using for the time being.Message Edited by GoalieFergy53 on 02-14-2009 02:30 PM

Every now and then when my thinkpad edge 11 resumes from standby. The pointer won't move. It makes no difference if I use the trackpoint or the touchpad. When this occurs I have to restart the computer using the keyboard and then pointing devices work again. Does anyone know a way to fix this issue? The problem doesn't occur every time when resuming from standby but sometimes it does.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad stops working after resume from standby

hey won1,uninstall the current trackpoint/touchpad driver for your unit.windows should then install its own generic drivers. now with generic drivers install, place your unit on standby and then resume it.see if the same error occurs. at the same time, head over to >> http://support.lenovo.com and update your unit from drivers to bios.

I have the following issue. Ultranav stopped working, both Touchpad and Trackpoint. If I press FN+F8 I get the error message: "Ultranav Driver is not installed" I re-installed Ultranav Drivers, Ultranav Utility and HotKeys If I enter in device manager, Ultranav does not exists as a device If enter in BIOS menu I have no information about Ultranav. I have no idea if it could have been disabled in BIOS. I opened the SL500 and checked if some cable was loose. All are ok. If I enter in ThinkVantage ToolBox and check devices-mouse etc. I get only keyboard and mouse (I mouse I'm using now since Ultranav went on vacation) Any hint?

I've tried to load Bios defaults with no effect. In the Device Manager there's the information that there's a problem with the ThinkPad UltraNav Pointing Device, but if I try to update its driver, I get the information that the driver is the newest one. I have an IBM T40 laptop. I have been having problems with the mouse properties. I opened up the advanced properties for the mouse and selected the UltraNav tab. I keep selecting the "Standard Scroll" option but it never stays. It keeps doing the smooth scrolling. For some reason, after my laptop has been on for a while, I can get the standard scroll option to stay. But then after a while longer it reverts back by itself. It usually happens when something disrupts my wireless internet connection. I have downloaded all the latest drivers that I could find from the IBM website. What is messing this up?

I just got a new T61p running Vista business and was configuring the look & feel of it related to the trackpoint.  I completed all of the normal 'first time setup' chores; registration, software & driver updates, user definition and savepoint. I went to the Control Panel,  Hardware & Sound, Mouse, Mouse Properties/UltraNav panel.  Once there, I played around with the TrackPoint by: clicking the TrackPoint Settings buttonselecting the Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function Settings buttonselecting the Large Size Magnifying Glass optionclicking the Ok buttonclicking the Apply button on TrackPoint Propertiesclicking the Ok button on TrackPoint Propertiesselecting the Use advanced features only - the Magnifying Glass feature didn't seem to work when the 'pointing device' option was enabledclicking the Apply button on UltraNav I was then able to use the TrackPoint as a roving Magnifying Glass, which was a 'neat' feature that quickly became unusable.  (Normal typing lead to frequent brushes of the TrackPoint which caused the Magnifying Glass to pop up when & where I didn't want it, etc.) I tried to undo the feature by resetting it to a Scrolling only with 'Use as pointing device with advanced features' setting - clicking Apply/Ok as needed - but to no avail.  The TrackPoint didn't resume it's 'pointing device' functionality. I then reset it to M... I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

Hi,While docked yesterday, I downloaded the latest ThinkVantage Updates  using the System Update Utility for my T61 2009-AD1.  After applying the updates, the system rebooted and my TP stick was very SLOW as I keep it on the fastest settings to reduce hand stress.   When I went into the control panel --> mouse, it tells me: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver"   If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver, please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking on the Yes button.  You then need to reinstall your pointing device driver for the external device again.  Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics Driver Now? I had an external USB TrackPoint Keyboard connected to the dock and have never had any problems from the UltraNav or the Updates.   Generally, there were two UltraNav tabs in the Mouse Panel, one for the onboard TP and one for the Ultranav USB Keyboard.. Recently purchased a T61 and using it with Windows XP.  In trying to turn off the Touchpad, I discovered there is no "Ultranav Tab" (as there is on my wife's T61) when I go to the Control Panel, open Mouse and get the Mouse Properties Window.  The only tabs on Mouse Properties are Buttons, Pointers, Pointer Options, and Hardware. Then I went to the Add/Remove Programs and found no Thinkpad Ultranav Driver program (v. 7.5.17.20, 27mb) as there is on my wife's T61.  Two questions for you learned folks: 1.  How do I turn off the touchpad?  I'm losing too much work by accidentally hitting it while typing.2.  Where can I find the missing program if I'll need it to turn it off? Thanks and Happy New Year to all.

I have a Lenovo Helix that I have loved since I got it. Ever since the update to UltraNav, the touchpad stops working upon booting from sleep. After restarting the computer, it works fine. The UltraNav is not grayed out when it doesn't work, so I'm not sure what the situation is. I have since uninstalled the Synaptics drivers, thereby removing UltraNav and just using the Windows PS/2 driver; however, the PS/2 driver is rather frustrating. Every little touch on the touchpad it picks up when I type, as well as I miss being able to left-click anywhere on the touchpad. I have looked at multiple threads, and every one I've found says to just disable UltraNav. Has there actually been a fix? Is there an alternative driver that I can use other the Windows? Any information to fix, update, or alternative would be helpful.

Hi again, the touchpad drivers of my lenovo s430 edge seem to be broken or buggy. If I install those drivers, everything is working fine, but after first reboot, the touchpad is not working anymore and I have to use the Trackpoint. I'm unable to control the cursor than. Clicking with the pad ist still working. The only thing I've changed was the sensibility in the UltraNav-Tab of windows mouse settings dialog. Of course I've reset those features and reinstalled the drivers, but that didn't help. From time to time it's working again, as now... mostly if connected with AC adapter. If I uninstall the drivers, the touchpad is working always, but without all the features. OS installed: Windows 7 Professional 64bit The drivers were autoinstalled by Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update utility. As I wrote in my other posting, there is an issue with the intel graphics driver, too and that one is also affecting other users.Topic: s430 pixel displacedStill without solution.. Has anyone have had an compareable problem?

Can you try uninstalling your current UltraNav driver and reinstall from this page (under Mouse and Keyboard):
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT074005

I would also install the Hotkey Features Integration under ThinkVantageTechnology.  The UltraNav driver was updated on August 9 and sometimes System Update hasn't loaded the very latest driver.

Can you also check in Device Manager to make sure it is not allowed to turn off to save power (right-click on the device in Device Manager>Properties>Power Management).

I own a Thinkpad T61, operating Windows Vista 32-bit. I've owned it for a little under 1.5 years now. Recently, I have been having issues with the trackpoint and touchpad. It will stop working completely. Sometimes I can open the ThinkVantage UltraNav menu, reselect one of the options and it'll turn back on. Other times the UltraNav utility/driver will be missing, so Alt + F8 does nothing. Also sometimes just restarting the computer fixes it temporarily. Pretty much I have yet to discover the trigger for it randomly stopping, nor do I have a guaranteed method of fixing it (each time is different). I've read a couple forums with other users having similar problems, but nothing they submitted helped remedy my problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am running a ThinkPad L530 in a Windows 10 environment.  All drivers are up to date.

Ever since I installed Windows 10, whenever the laptop awakens from sleepmode or is rebooted, the touchpad becomes enabled.  I have gone into the Settings - Devices - Mouse & touchpad - additional mouse options - Ultranav and unchecked the "Enable TouchPad" and clicked Apply, then OK.  This doesn't hold, though.  As soon as it awakens, the box becomes checked and I have to redo the settings.  I don't want the touchpad active at all, but I do occasionally need the eraser button.  How do I make my selection stick?

System:Helix 3701XXXWindows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bitThird Apps installedLatest Lenovo Drivers installed Problem:Latest versions of ThinkPad Synaptic UltraNav Drivers (versions 18.0.7.39 to .57)  causing keyboard to act sporadically. This would cause programs to automatically open and key inputs to continuously active (repeating the enter key). Other behaviors include ignoring touchpad input and ignoring certain keys on keyboard. The problem has been reported by 5+ systems. When it occurs:The problem is intermittent; it often occurs after waking the system up from sleep or from a locked state (Windows lockscreen). As a workaround, the user has to press the ESC key, CTRL+ALT+Delete or restart the system in order to regain functionality. Uninstalling the driver application also resolves the issue. Anyone else experiencing this issue? Any advice from Lenovo staff would help.

Answer:Windows 8.1 Ent. Helix - UltraNav, TouchPad and Keyboard issues

Yes, I get similar issues. Although in my case it is mainly: i) the mouse point does not respond after resuming from sleep - CTRL-ALT-Delete or ESC normal resolves thisii) windows or programs open on resume from sleep as if the mouse button was depressed (could be enter key however). Again CTRL-ALT-DEL or ESC can resolve this I'm pretty sure that this is a driver issue as it has only been the last 6 or so months I've experienced this I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro

I get this spiral symbol (see above image) in place of my mouse indicator when I move my fingers a certain way on the ultranav mousepad. One way it occurs is if I move my finger from left to right or right to left across the bottom of the ultranav mousepad. It interferes with me being able to move the mouse.  I suspect it is to prevent inadvertant movement of the mouse when your finger just brushed the ultranav mousepad.  I would like to turn it off if possible.

Wife purchased a T440s in November.  Arrived December.  I installed Windows 8.1 from scratch, and it worked.  Then on Friday, Jan 31st 2014, I ran the driver update tool from Lenovo.  It upgraded the driver to 17.0.12.60.  She noticed that scrolling became much more unreliable.  She could sometimes not get docs/webpages to scroll until she clicked around the page.  Then she could get scrolling to work again.  Also, scrolling speeds increased _dramatically_ to the point it was unusable.  Also, the scrolling was quite jerky.  So I rolled the driver back to 17.0.12.56 and immediately she noticed a difference.  She was able to successfully scroll again and scrolling wasn't too fast and much smoother. Others have noticed this on Notebook Review's forum.  I'm going to ask those people to come here and add their comments. Can Lenovo please fix the UltraNav driver?  Thanks!

Answer:T440s UltraNav Touchpad Scroll Too Fast and Jerky

Yes, I experienced the same problem. Two finger scrolling became unusable (way too fast and erratic) after an upgrade to UltraNav 17.0.12.60. Reverting back to 17.0.12.56 fixed the issue. Please fix this in the next version. Thank you!

E420S, Cannot get either to work. Cannot enable trackpoint or touchpad in UltraNav.

Answer:Trackpoint and Touchpad

Hi, ezedoh

The first thing I would recommend is the removal of the UltraNav driver from the system. This is best accomplished by using an external mouse to navigate the system. To uninstall the UltraNav driver, open the Start menu and type Device Managerinto the Search box, and then press Enter. Once here, double click on Mouse and other pointing devices, and then right-click on the UltraNav device. Naviage to the Driver tab and select Uninstall... from the bottom of the window. Follow the prompts to uninstall and then restart when prompted by Windows. Windows should install a generic driver for controlling the mouse. This should reinstate the touchpad to working order. If not, then continue using an external mouse for now.

Once the UltraNav driver has been removed, I would recommend trying to use the standard Synaptics driver found here. Synaptics is the company that develops the UltraNav software, so there should be no loss of compatibility/features. I have witnessed several cases where this driver has helped others with mouse issues, so it may help yours as well.

Hope it helps,
Adam

OK, T60 Notebook and suddenly the TrackPoint and TouchPad stopped working.  I checked under the ThinkVantage tools and they are enabled.  I checked in the BIOS and the device(s) are enabled there as well.  I've had a TouchPad go bad before but the TrackPoint still worked.  Kinda strange both would go down at the same time.  So, in short: 1.  Has anyone out there experienced this and if so, how did you fix it?2.  Does anyone have the part number for a replacement TouchPad (I've searched the site and could find dang near everything else, but the TouchPad) TIA!

Answer:TouchPad and TrackPoint

They're integrated parts of the palm rest. A cable connects all integrated parts of the palm rest to the machine. So I guess the cable isn't plugged in firmly enough. Remove the palm rest according to the hardware manual and check. If the cable has no problem, contact Lenovo to ask for a replacement palm rest.

Hi all! The new s430 just arrived, containing some annoying problems :/ . One of them is the following: The Touchpad and the Trackpoint are not working at all. I can t de/activate them in the Win7-system-control. The drivers are up-to-date. Could it be a driver/software-problem? Greetings,Bvbnudel

Answer:No Touchpad and Trackpoint

Hi Bvbnudel, Touchpad and Trackpoint are indeed different components, there is a little chance that will fail altogether. I would suggest re-install UltraNav driver and check with antivirus programs. For further assistance, please kindly contact local lenovo.UltraNav driver for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), Vista (32-bit, 64-bit) and XP (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPadhttp://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS019164Worldwide Support Center phone list for ThinkPad, ThinkCentre and ThinkStation systemshttp://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=PD008370Fred

I have two Lenovo laptops. As many people have noted, the touchpad can cause unwanted behaviors when simply typing. This often causes the pointer/focus to jump to another point while typing.Ideally there is a simple way to toggle the touchpad on and off depending on whether an external mouse is attached (I am sure it is far too much too expect that Lenovo has a mechanism to automatically detect this condition and make the adjustment!)The "help" solutions I have seen include: 1) pressing fn+f8 (does not bring up the screen indicated, and indee the key on my two laptops indicates a different function for the f8 key)2) Through control panel, go to mouse and open the UltraNav tab and click a box to disable. However neither of my laptops have an UltraNav tab there. Instead there is a tab labeled "Thinkpad" which on my 11e provides NO "disable" option and on my E440 allows you to set various combinations of touchpad and touchpoint options, NONE of which include disabling both.3) Through control panel / Devices, disable the touchpad. There is no "disable" option available there.4) Toggling the touchpad on and off by shutting down, interrupting the boot process to enter Bios settings and turning off the touchpad. A solution that requires a user to contstantly change bios settings is so unweildy and riduculous that no further comment is neccessary. (I am running Windows 7 pro... the native OS on both laptops and any "solution" that involves Windows 8 or 10 is not an acceptabl... Answer:Disable touchpad on Thinkpad 11e and Edge440 which do not have Ultranav tab in mouse settings

Solution!!!(At least for the 11e!) (Like many people, the touchpad is only of any use to me in an emergency situation. I normally use an external mouse. Negative side-effects of the touchpad make it imperative to disable it under normal operations.) From total frustration, I tried uninstalling the touchpad drivers. Well, on the next reboot, the system automatically reloaded the drivers. !!! Then I swallowed hard and decided to disable the touchpad through BIOS as suggested by a Lenovo tech in a reply to another user. Ultimately I reached a resolution, which is not perfect, but so much better than the lack of configurability provided by Lenovo. This worked for me. No guarantees for you. Step one: Go to http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds027949 and download the outdated version of the synaptic driver/application. The name of the file is 0dtp02ww.exe it is version 15.2.7.0 and it is dated 3/16/2012. Step two: Remove the Synaptics *APPLICATION* (not through "Device Manager") through control panel- applications. Step three: Run the file downloaded in step one. Step four: Open Control-Panel. There are several ways to get to the mouse configuration screen. One way is to just type "mouse" in the search box at upper right.. Under the options returned as "Mouse" click on "Change mouse settings". You will see that the "ThinkPad" tab has been replaced by one with the red and white Synaptics logo labeled "Device Settings". That ta... Read more

Hy,  about 6 monts ago my left hinge was broken and a taked my notebook to a local service and after replacing my hinges they torn my ribbon that connects the touchpad with motherboard and since then i've obsessivelysearch for a ribbon and i can't find it. Please help me to find a ribbon , i mean where to order one or a compatible ribbon with sl500 the P/N is 04G550285232LV . Yes I searched this number on the internet but no results pls help me Spoiler (Highlight to read)

Answer:touchpad sl500 ribbon

Hey there anddya,

After doing some research, you'll generally have to look at replacing the palm rest assembly as a whole, as Lenovo doesn't sell the ribbon separately. If this a route you'd like to take and want to you'll find the appropriate part number by going here to view the system service parts. The palm rest assembly is number 27 in the table. You will need your mode and machine type, should be a total of 7 characters. Your MTM should start with 2746, the three numbers/letters following these four will help you determine which palmrest assembly you'll need.

Hope this assists you anddya, and if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask!

I have a Lenovo T420s.  I bought it in May 2011 so it came with the Touchpad/Trackpoint driver version 15.2.14.0 (6hgx35ww.zip), which is the one also known for its massive memory leak. In any case, with that driver I am able to use the Trackpoint to navigate somewhere on the screen and immediately use the Touchpad if necessary. I do that a lot - I use the Trackpoint to quickly get somewhere on the screen, and then switch to the Touchpad for finer navigation (e.g. to look for something in Explorer, click on a link somewhere, etc). Every version since that verison has not worked the same.  I am now using 15.3.16.1 which doesn't have any memory leaks.  As soon as I touch the Trackpoint, the Touchpad becomes unresponsive to touch for about 1.5 seconds.  Try it.  Put your left pointer finger on the Trackpoint and move the mouse around.  Right as you lift your finger, use your right pointer finger on the Touchpad and see if it responds. It doesn't - you have to lift your finger and put it down again for it to register your touch.  Previously it would register your finger touch on the Touchpad right away. I'm almost tempted to switch back and deal with the memory leaks!  It makes such a difference with speed of navigation. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Hello all,I just got my Thinkpad T420 two weeks ago. Solid laptop overall, but recently I have some problems with my touchpad and trackpoint. There is a big movemental gap of the cursor when using trackpoint, and the touchpad is unusable. This happened once last week but then it disappeared after I disabled and then re-enabled trackpoint/touchpad, changing sensivity... Yesterday it happened again and this time it wont disappear after applying the same method. I tried updating the drivers, as well as reset BIOS (boot to BIOS -> F9 -> save) but none helped. I'm dualbooting windows 7 & arch linux, and the problem is present on both of the operating systems. This is really frustrating. Can someone please give me some suggestions what I could do to get rid of this annoying bug. Thanks very much.

I bought a new T61 Thinkpad recently. From the begining I have been having problems with the trackpoint and touchpad mouse. At a time only one works and it is mostly the touchpad. I checked the BIOS setting and it is at automatic for both touchpad and trackpoint. Sometimes even the touchpad does not work. I have to restart the laptop couple of times for something to work. I have tried disabling touchpad in BIOS and end up not having the trackpoint also not work.In the thinkvantage productivity center it says that ultranav is not installed and I downloaded the ultranav update from lenovo website and installed it. Still the trackpoint does not work.I love the trackpoint and I hope some one can help me figure out what is happening.thanks

Recently I've been having an issue with both my trackpoint and touchpad. sometimes one works and other times the other works. from time to time they both work. it seems to switch when i pull up a new website or open a program. if one works before i open the program then the other will work after i open it. the buttons are the same way as well.. if one set works then the other doesn't but they don't correspond to which pointing device is working.. its kind of random.

Answer:Trackpoint & Touchpad problem

I have just starting having the same problems as well.  It's driving me nuts.  I thought my laptop was crapping out.  Anyone have any ideas what's going on?  I also had the trackpoint touchpad go south on a HP N6400, though in all cases, the Synaptic driver thinks everything is hunkydorey.  I've updated drivers, tried everything.   Whole reason I have a Lenovo is for the trackpoint and if it's going to stop working, then will start looking at a new laptop.

So therefore always the trackpoint and the touchpad are both active, which can be sometimes a disadvantage Thank you for any help.

Heads up to potential buyers.  The X300 trackpoint and touchpad are not fully functional when used with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, MS Access, Remote Desktop, and other mainstream applications.  This is true for both XP and Windows OS.  The built-in pointing devices operate like a mouse without a wheel - you can point and click, but you cannot scroll.  This has been a known problem since June of 2008, and has been brought to the attention of this forum numerous times without resulting in any known action by Lenovo.WFaz

Hi there, I've been using a T400 for around a year now. Previously, I could move the trackpoint and the touchpad at the same time (left hand on the trackpoint and right hand on the touchpad). I reformated, installed the drivers for both, and now if I am using the trackpoint and try to move the touchpad at the same time, there is about a 2 second delay before I get any movement from the touchpad. Any ideas? It is a really big annoyance because even if I am using the track point and stop moving it, and then immediately try and move the touchpad there is still a second where no movement happens, and I have to lift my finger and put it back down on the touchpad before the cursor moves. Thanks,-Ben

Answer:Using Touchpad and Trackpoint simultaneously.

I use the trackpoint and usually have both pad and trackpoint turned on.  Normally, i would have my palm resting on the pad while using the trackpoint.  If the pad reacted to my touch while i'm using the trackpoint, it would be quite annoying because the mouse would move unintentionally.  having approx 1-2 sec delay fixes the problem of unintentional movement.   So I thought it was supposed to work that way...

I suddenly find that both the trackpoint and touchpad are not functioning. they are set to Automatic in the BIOS but the UltraNav shows them grayed out.History:I had recently installed the system update "systemupdate314-2008-5-15.exe" when I had this problem (the key board also had stopped responding). The problem persisted but got rectified after a few restarts. But it now recurs again (though the keyboard is fine now). I also had recently removed the palmrest and tightened the touchpad connection when it had stopped working. It was fine till recently. Can you please suggest a remedy..

Hello, I've bought new ThinkPad t540p recently. I've never used Trackpoint before and found it is very useful. But one thing breaks my happiness about Trackpoint. It's terrible clicking on touchpad. As I know it's common problem. But when I deleted Ultranav drivers and my Windows started using default drivers, I've realized that Trackpoint cursor pointing + Touchpad tap-to-click performance are best of breed. Unfortunately, I've lost scrolling and gestures. Is it possible to configure the same behaviour (Trackpoint cursor pointing + Touchpad tap-to-click) on Ultranav drivers or not? Thank you.

Answer:T60 trackpoint and touchpad work random!

Hello,

Just to confirm, this occurs under both Xubuntu and Windows 7?

If so, I would say carefully disconnect and reconnect the touchpad/keyboard assembly to verify it is not a connection problem, and if the problem still continues, to replace it with a new assembly.

I have a new T440s which came with Windows 8, and I upgraded to 8.1Nothing strange installed in it. Sometimes touchpad and/or trackpoint don't work at all after turning on, rebooting or recovering from a suspended state. It never fails while the system is running. When it happens, I reboot and it works fine. Already upgraded everything using System Update (BIOS, etc) and Windows Update. Sounds to me as a driver issue, not a hardware issue... but I am not 100% sure. What should I do? Should I reinstall any driver? How?

Answer:T440s touchpad and trackpoint issue

Uninstall the UltraNav driver from Device Manager or Programs and Features. Then run System Update; it should offer the UltraNav driver again.Alternatively, here's the manual download:https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds034647

So after reinstalling the driver, my T440s Trackpoint is working as advertised, but while it was acting all wonky...something happened. The driver malfunctioned in a good way so that I could tap the touchpad with my thumb to invoke a left-click while using the TrackPoint. Normall, the driver locks out the touchpad completely while the TrackPoint is in use, so that the touchpad only functions as buttons. But the vertical travel of the touchpad is deep and it takes extra effort to depress completely each time. What's worse, the touchpad remains locked out after I move the cursor with the TrackPoint and then stop to leave it over an icon, so that I actually have to move the cursor with the touchpad before it will accept a tap as a left- or right-click. Is there any way to force the driver to let me use taps instead of clicks to inoke left and right click while using the TrackPoint? Also, is there any way to defeat the touchpad lockout? In my opinion, the touchpad itself is excellent as far as Windows touchpads go. They've gotton double-tap for right-click perfectly, and two-finger scrolling is actually quite nice. But they've also overlooked an opportunity to make TrackPoint use even easier and more user-friendly than it was with physical buttons.

I just upgraded my X301 to windows 7 and there doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the touch-pad. So, when I comfortably use my keyboard and trackpoint, I am constantly selecting things. The XP control panel interface had both separate sensitivity controls and the ability to turn the touchpad completely off. This doesn't exist in the Win7 ctrl panel and I can only find one driver suite for windows 7 on Lenovo's site. Any ideas?

Hi, Finally I got my SL300 extremely fast and I'm very happy with it except for the Pointing devices. Both the Trackpoint and the touchpad are practically unusable because of their significant lag time. The Trackpoint reacts quickly but while moving it hops around jerking. It's like it will stick some times and then it hops and moves on. Otherwise the touchpad reacts much smoother but with a significant delay. If you move the finger left-right-left, I guess there's a delay of 500ms until the pointer arrives.I did notice this behaviour in Vista and XP (both original Recovery left-unchanged OS). I've noticed that this behaviour does not when you're in the Recovery menu while booting from the Recovery CD until the OS gets installed. Hope Lenovo/Alps will fix the drivers. Why didn't you choose the Synaptics pointing devices like in the SL400/SL500?

Sometimes, more often then helix is unplugged from power abapter, touhpad and trackpoint just stops warking at all. Keyboard working fine. Sometimes after about 30sseconds of tapping, mouse cursor moves a little, or touchpad "returns to live", but for about 3-5seconds, and then "dies" again. All drivers are updated from Lenovo site with their latest versions.OS doesnt matter, happends on windows 7 and windows 8 both.

Answer:Helix touchpad/trackpoint problems

Hi, mr_Jack

I would recommend uninstalling the current driver and see if it is the driver that is causing the issue. This can be accomplished by navigating to Control Panel ? Device Manager. While in Device Manager, open the tree labelled Mice and other pointing devices. Right-click on the device and select Properties. Next, navigate to the Driver tab and click on Uninstall... at the bottom. This will uninstall the driver, which will allow Windows to install a generic driver. If the generic driver functions without issue, then I would recommend either trying to reinstall the UltraNav driver or giving the Synaptics base driver installed, which can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam
