SL510 - Always gets back to login-screen after some time

Question: SL510 - Always gets back to login-screen after some time

Hello,I'm using the ThinkPad SL510 and have a problem with the energy options. No matter what I choose (I disabled EVERYTHING which has even slightly to do with the screen), after some time the screen gets black as if I chose it to shutdown after about 10 minutes. But I didn't, it says "Never". When I move the cursor it's on again, so it seems to go into standby or something. Also sometimes the login-screen pops up after about 10 minutes of doing nothing (it seems to choose at random what to do).I tried using other energy options and even made my own profile with everything disabled but i still happens. Screensavers are disabled as well. Does anyone have a idea how I can disable that? I just want it to never shut down the screen or the notebook itself and never open the login-screen.

Preferred Solution: SL510 - Always gets back to login-screen after some time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: SL510 - Always gets back to login-screen after some time

Hi. I don't have a solution to your problem, just want to sympathize that my SL510 exhibits similar flakey behavior. I set all the screen shutdown settings in the BIOS and Windows to Never shutdown, but the screen still shuts down after 15 minutes anyway. I finally "solved" the problem by setting the BIOS screen shutdown time to 15 minutes. Now the machine's actual behavior matches the meaningless system settings. See how computers work?

This has never happened before. When I turn on the computer, the two accounts show up (both administrator) but whenever I click either of them, the screen just shows the Windows 7 login screen for a while without any text then sends me back to the account selection. This happens when I select either of the accounts, one of them also has a password but that doesn't show up either.

PLEASE HELP.
(also don't know a lot about computers ;-; )

EDIT : When I turned on the computer, it went through updates where it says Starting Windows with the Windows logo. Maybe this helps.

Answer:Can't login to Windows 7. Sends me back to login screen every time.

Same thing happened to me since the update yesterday.

( just to clarify Is this the same problem ? I posted a video Windows Error - YouTube )

when I try to login to either of the accounts, it flashed for a second and then goes back to the login screen. I did an offline defender scan and remove a few adware, but I don't think they were the cause.
Is there any way I could monitor the login process and see what's failing.

Hi people, i've just registered to this forum to ask you about this, Since i've made a registry defrag with TuneUp Utilities (which probably has gone wrong), when i reset the computer, and I logon to my user, it shows a black screen, then back at the logon screen. If I do it again, the user doesn't show up anymore!
It happened three times already, i had to make new users, and i'm sick of it. Any ideas of what could it be?

Answer:Black screen after login for some seconds, then back at logon screen!

Welcome!

Yet another case of registry defraggers causing harm. In the future, you know now to stay far away from them.

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before TuneUp utilities. If that doesn't work, it will be time for a repair install.

Good luck!

I have a Inspirion 15 5558,with i7, 8GB ram,1TB HDD,My average To reach the login screen was around 45 secs.
I was facing LCD issues, the technician came over and checked the LCD and pasted some stickers on i it so that it can be repaired later.
I found that its taking more than 4 minutes to reach the login screen.
When i contacted the technician he said it was an OS problem and that i should downgrade to 8 or 8.1
so if everyone can comment about their boot time it would be helpful in determining the problem.

Thank you

Answer:login screen keeps coming back again and again

Hi there asadhu...

Have you tried an alternative browser such as Opera/Firefox? Does the same happen with them?

Also, if you go to your Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Programs tab -> Reset Web Settings (remove tick from Homepage reset otherwise it will revert to default) -> Yes -> OK. -> Advanced tab -> Restore defaults -> Apply/OK.

Then clear your cookies/temporary internet files and history and relaunch IE and try again.

Any help or still the same?

Hello, Yesterday I began noticing that when trying to log into my computer that it did not register my password right away.   After a few tries it finally accepted it.   Today, it took many more tries before it accepted it (I was sure to type it correctly and not make any typos).    Concerned, I tried both changing and trying to remove my password (after I was finally logged in) and now it won't recognize my password at all!    At this point I'm afraid to turn the computer off in case it won't let me log in at all.    Any advice? Thank you!

I set up separate account for each member of my family on the new PC. I would like set things up so when any of the accounts are inactive for 20 minutes it will go back to the login screen rather than a screen saver. Is that possible?

When Vista times out it goes to the login screen if the account uses a password. As administrator, I use a password. The rest of my family does not.

I want to go to the login screen because my family is too lazy to exit the current account and click into their own. They tend to use whatever account is on the screen, then complain that others make changes to "their" desktop. If I can make the timed-out account go back to the login screen, then loging into their own account will take the same effort as going to the account of someone else.

Can it be done?

The only solution that I can think of at the moment is to use the "On Resume, display logon screen" option in the screensaver, as shown in this screenshot:

To change the screensaver:
Right-click an empty area of the desktop, then select "Personalize"Click on "Screen Saver"You may want to consider adding passwords to all the user accounts, and changing all but one (yours) to limited accounts, especially for your younger children. I'm writing this for my neighbor. She has Windows XP. Her problem is when she tries to log on to her pc, it won't let her go any farther than her password. It keeps taking her back to the password screen over and over. We know for sure that she is entering the correct one. Sometimes after she enters her password, the diagnostics will run then it takes her back to reenter her password, over and over again. Also, the previous owner password protected the BIOS but we don't know where she is now to get the password from her. Does anyone know how to solve these problems?.........Thanks........ ~~~~~Dee

I'm running XP Professional on a Dell C400 with 512MB RAM. It was working fine until i caught up with 10 months of Microsoft updates. Now I cannot log in. The Welcome screen comes up. I click on my username and it begins the login process (sounds etc.), then it immediately logs off and saves settings. It does this everytime, even the administrator account. I can't log on at all. I had used CC cleaner 2.6, Malwarebyte, Microsoft Security Essentials to do basic cleaning and it was running fine until i left it running for 30 minutes while plugged in and then the above process started. Any suggestions where to go from here? Both logons have blank passwords - or should have had them.

Hi,

I've probably posted this here before, but I'm about at my wit's end regarding this issue. When my computer is idle for a period of time (and it varies), the screen goes black and then switches back to the login screen. For a while, it was only doing it after several hours of inactivity, but now it's mere minutes. I thought I was the only one with this issue, but I stumbled across this post from March 2009, from user Raechul:

"I have searched everywhere and can't figure out how to keep this computer from going to the login screen after being idle for ten minutes!

I saw this thread and it was not what I needed- my settings are already set to not show the login screen, so I'm still at a loss.

Does anyone know how to stop it from going to login annoyance?"

I checked the highlighted link, but found nothing to solve my problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the nVidia graphics drivers. I've updated said drivers through Windows Update. I've done a full malware and virus scan. I've disabled hibernation, I've checked my power settings, I've disabled the screensaver. Nothing seems to make a difference.

My computer is an Acer Aspire 4520 laptop, nVidia GeForce 7000M graphics, AMD Athlon x2 64bit processor, Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit version. Screen resolution is 1280 x 800. All of the "wake on" settings are disabled, and in my power settings the "require login on wake" is disabled as well.

This is really getting annoying. I hope ... Read more

I have done a bit of searching on this, and tried everything that i could. But the few threads i found pertaining to this exact problem required individual fixes. I would consider myself pretty good with computers, but this is over my head and i just cant figure it out.
As the title states, i use the sleep function constantly - and all of a sudden 2 days ago this problem started. Relatively new build, about a month old.
Login screen is usually there for about a second before it goes back to sleep, usually it is an endless loop that can only be stopped by turning off power supply switch and fully restarting, although sometimes after the second try it will restart on its own.

I have looked through event viewer and i can not find any one thing that gives an error every time i put it to sleep, its easy to test - happens every single time i put it to sleep, immediately. Although i am not an expert and could be missing something. Also from what i can tell a minidump is only created when the computer restarts itself - not every time it resets to sleep or even when i turn the power off.
I have tried -
Unplugging all usb devices.
Restoring default power schemes
Updating windows
Restoring default bios settings.
Disabling hybrid sleep mode.
Ran troubleshooter on power, no issues other than screen saver on.
Turned off hibernation.
also i was getting an lgdcore.exe error in event viewer regularly so i completely uninstalled the logitech gaming software that my mouse and keybo... Read more

About a month ago, I made a repair install on my family's Dell desktop computer. Everything turned out to be fine except a minor difference. A couple minutes after using it and logging off, the background, where the row(s) of accounts are after booting, switched from a light blue color(with a tiny bird) screen to a dark blue one (w/o the bird).

Was this supposed to happen?

Is there any way to switch the background back to what I assume is the default with the tiny bird?

I frequently am logging in and out of my Windows 8.1 laptop. I have a good, secure password that I use and because I'm human, sometimes I mistype it. The issue is that on these occasions, I am locked out for a good 30 seconds from attempting to
login, even for the second time.

I can understand the time delay if it were say, my 5th or 6th attempt, but for one attempt this is entirely too long. How do I go about significantly reducing this, or ideally removing it?

Thank you very much!

could it be that i have 67% of my 120gb hd used?

Answer:login screen takes a loooong time

If you're running XP Pro and it belongs to a domain, but you don't have a domain controller available it can take a long time. Otherwise, it's something (or many things) that take time to get going when you start up. Spyware or a virus? ehhh...Maybe...

But first, try looking at your services and see if there's too much going on. Also, check your system and application event logs. Look for the events right after startup, and in particular look for things that time-out, repeat themselves often, have red warnings, or follow a significant interval of time since the previous message in the log.

I suspect that you just got too much crap running. Uninstall stuff that you know that you don't need. P2P would be the first thing I'd boot from my system if I were you.

Good luck.

Hi everyone,

Before we start, I'm a total noob on this subject, so please be gentle with me.

I've experienced 'very' slow boot times in the given time interval (before it took maybe 10 sec, now it takes 2-3 minutes). After login the machine is ready for usage within 30 sec. I've searched on several forums for what the problem could be and these are the steps which I've taken so far:
* performed defragmentation on the harddrive
* deleted all windows updates and reinstalled them
* look at the event logger, but I couldn't find anything causing mayor and/or reoccuring problems
These things didn't work out for me. I've included the machine's specs in my profile, I hope it suffices.

Could you please help me?

Hi
I have an Acer desktop i3, 6gb 2 years old running Windows 7 home premium.
For the past few months I 've been getting a problem with slow boot time, from the initial black Acer screen to Windows starting to load takes between 3 minutes 20 seconds and 3 minutes 30 seconds. Windows loads immediately afer the login screen. This happens every time. I am also having a problem with screen flicker. If there is any window open, it gives a very quick flicker every so often. This seems to be stopping my screensaver kicking in. I can preview screensaver but it stops every time at 3 minutes 30 seconds. I use SkyGo in full screen, it drops out of full screen after 3 minutes 30 seconds. Same as the boot time. It seems as though one thing is causing all the problems but I don't know what.
I have run every type of repair I can think of and now have used the recovery disks to return to factory settings thinking this might solve the problems. It didn't, boot time just the same, no screensaver etc.
I am totally at a loss now, has anyone any idea what could be causing this? Are there any other checks I can make?
Thanks

I have a windows 7 machine with ssd. Recently, the login time after user login has become unusually long. After I enter the password, it takes about 30 seconds, and then another 30 seconds as the screen goes black.

Any idea what might cause this and how to repair it? Windows is fully patched/updated, avg antivirus running, ran glary utilities, updated video card drivers today. Also, I had Crysis 2 crash a few days ago, and this problem emerged at roughly that time. Could the Crysis 2 crash have somehow corrupted the video card drivers?

Anyway every time I now logon I have to press 'Ctrl-Alt-Del' and then open Task Manager, and run a new task 'explorer.exe' and everything is loading quickly. I'm just wondering why it keeps doing this?

Thanks, all help is appreciated,

Hi! I recently repaired my SL510 Lenovo Think Pad laptop, using a restore disk to do so.  I have Windows 7.   Things are going well, although there are some problems I'm working on trying to fix after the restore. One problem that I also had before the restore, is that my restore to earlier time function is not working.   I try to turn it on by going to the Protection tab in the System folder in the Control Panel.   And before doing anything - I notice that all of the 3 protection options are turned off.  When I click on the C folder and then on the Configure button and select the top option - it does nothing.  I am able to select the middle option.  And to move the slider.  But when I hit the Apply button it refuses, saying it is unable to apply the changes I am asking for.

What do you suggest that I do about this?  Thanks in advance, for any efforts in helping me to solve the problem!

I didn't know how to properly describe the problem in the title, so it might be a bit unclear. (also, sorry if this problem has already been posted - i did have a look but didnt see it)

Basically I've set my powersave settings so my screen turns off after 20 minutes. Sometimes (i think its after long periods of time), the screen won't come back on when i move the mouse, so I just have to turn it off and boot up again. I do leave the computer on over night quite often because I'm running downloads that I want finished. (at first i thought the problem was related to my download client, but it isn't).

I'm having trouble identifying what the problem is exactly, because the other day i ran regcure, and the problem seemed to stop, but now its happened again. Also, after booting up again, my internet just randomly doesnt work (the wireless network connection icon doesnt even appaer in the system tray). All I have to do is unplug the adapter and put it back in again, but I still dont get why my internet just doesnt work after booting up again after this screen problem.

I went into a lot of detail there, I hope you can help. Thank You

Answer:Blank screen wont come back on after long periods of time

in power schemes its set to home/office desk, and the monitor is set to turn off after 20mins. turn off hard disks and system standby are set to never

in the advanced options, "always show icon on the taskbar" is unchecked, and the prompt for password one is checked. and when i press the power button its set to shut down. hibernation isnt enabled

Hi, we are trying to connect a beamer   (external screen) to our Thinkpad SL510. The beamer resolution is 1024x768.This work with "extending this display". The graphic card (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500, Driver: 8.700.00/13.1.2010) chooses for the external screen 1366x768 and for the external 1024x768. But if we change to "duplicate these screen", we aren't able to select the 1024x768 resolution. Additionally we booted from a Linux Live CD, there the OS is managing the screen like expected! Thanks for the help. Philipp

Answer:SL510 - Win7: "Duplicate screen" for external screen (1024x768) isn't working like expected.

Which OS have you been using originally? //edit: sorry, somehow, i overread it...So are you using a German version of Win7? (Because you are in Switzerland?!)In "Systemsteuerung -> Darstellung und Anpassung -> Anzeige -> An einen externen Monitor anschließen" you should be able to identify the projector and set up resolution... Hope that helped..

Hi. I see that a couple of people are having a similar issue with Facebook. My problem is with Dogphoria. I can't log-in for the past week from home--my laptop at Starbucks and my work computer have no problem logging in. I did everything Shaldares suggested for beckybrooke: clear history, cookies, cache, ssl states, unplug modem/restart computer and finally tried to get my ISP to help.

Here is where I am stuck: The "help" guy at my ISP told me to:
1. Go to the [Start] button located in the task bar.
2. Click on [Run], in the blank space type "cmd", hit enter.
3. A "DOS" screen appears.
4. Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter.

However, when I do this, I do not get a blank dos screen, only one that says
Micrsoft Windows XP...
Copyright...
c:\documents and settings...

and the guy at the ISP got a little rude and told me I am not following directions. Am I doing something wrong? Should I do something else?

Thanks in advance!

Note: I've already switched the LCD panel with another functioning SL510 laptop, but no change. 1. Display is always perfect on external monitor.2. Flicker stops on LCD screen' when connected to an external monitor and configured in Control Panel, Screen Resoution with DUPLICATE display turned on (although some screen colours are 'off').3. Only when I switch back to EXTENDED display the laptop screen returns to extreme flicker but NOT the external monitor. That seems to display just fine no matter what's happening on the laptop.4. When I do a screen capture of the dialog box displayed on the laptop screen, the image that I captured on the screen is fine when I paste. But here's what I'm actually seeing:   Any ideas??? Thanks in advance!

Hello friends, I recently got the Gnome desktop environment on the Ubuntu Software Center, and I used the gdm and startx command as said by another forum site. Nothing wrong, they said to logout, tried to login again, goes to a black screen and sends me back to the Ubuntu login screen. Tried again, same result, panicked. Looked up video tutorial on how to fix it, they said to access the control panel via ctrl-alt-f1 or f2, went to a black screen, no text at all, computer runs fine, no crashing. Is there a special way to access the terminal in a System76 computer, I really don't know very confusing? Is there a way to login with the guest session? I use Ubuntu 15.10 Wily Werewolf on my laptop. What causes this, I read on Ubuntu forums it's driver issues with Ubuntu and Nvidia, but I have my suspections with the Gnome desktop environment.

This is quite a confusing story, and the cause for it simply eludes me, but this will be the second time it has happened.

Basically, I was on Youtube through Google Chrome. Shockwave Flash crashed on me (and it is well known that Flash will often crash on Chrome), and when Chrome said I should end the process, I did. To attempt to restart Flash, I exited Chrome and clicked on it again to reopen it. It failed to come up. And so begins my real problem.

I try to open Task Manager through CTRL + Shift + ESC; fails to come up. I try CTRL + ALT + DEL as well; fails to come up. The computer begins to lag like crazy. I can't click on anything without having to wait for at least 5 minutes. I did try patience though, and the menus eventually came up, but still, movement was futile. My plan was to go in and hopefully find the process that was potentially lagging my pc. The strangest thing was that the CPU Usage was fine and barely went above 10-11%, and the Physical Memory was at 21%. So what could be affecting it and making it so slow if the processes are fine?

I then decided to restart my computer. It loaded the windows loading screen fine, but that first time the windows login screen took nearly 10 minutes to come up. When it finally did, I tried to login, it would take me to a black screen with just the mouse pointer in the dead center and nothing else within sight. The mouse was moveable, but there was nothing to click on.

I've tried a variety of solutions, from going into BIOS... Read more

We've got several user accounts setup on XP Pro with Fast User Switching enabled. Hi all, Weird problem.  Boot up, stop at login, enter credentials, goes to the desktop.  May boot up fine. OR after a few seconds, the desktop shrinks to 3/4 size, then goes BACK to login.  Relogin, goes to desktop, might be OK or might continue this endless loop. Happening about 2 weeks now.  Recently installed bitdefender but I can't remember if the problem preceeded that or just coincidental. When it loops several times, I have to hard power down.  Start all over and it's still a crap shoot. Windoows 8.1, flex2, I-7.... Thanks for your help! Russ

HiI have thinkpad sl510, with the screen resolution 1366x768. This is the highest resolution atm.Is there a way to get a higher resolution? I have tried to google, but I can't find a way to do this.I didnt find a post related to this, I will appreciate any help I can get. Thank you

Answer:SL510 - Screen Resolution

I believe the only way you can get a higher resolution out of your SL510 is to attach a monitor with a higher resolution. I have an LG Flatron which displays at 1920x1080 and works with my SL510.HTHNelson

Hi everyone! For the last moth or so, my screen has been off-centered: I have a 1-inch black bar on the right side of the screen, and the image continues for about the same distance under the screen.  Changing the resolution doesn't help, and all the related drivers are up to date.  I guess that on a desktop computer I could've gone through the screen's settings to replace the screen, but of course a laptop doesn't have such external buttons.  The problems only occurs on the laptop's built-in screen; when I plug to a TV through an HDMI cable, the image is just fine (no difference between extend screen and duplicate screen).  Anyone has an idea that could solve this problem? Here are my specs:Thinkpad SL510 LaptopWindows 10 Pro 64bitsIntel Core2 Duo CPU T6670 @ 2.20GHz 2.20 GHzMobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset FamilyScreen is detected as a generic Plug-and-Play monitor Thanks,Marc

Answer:SL510 screen off-center

Hello QcPilot,

Thanks for joining the forums.

Try to download the Chipset and Video drivers from the Lenovo support site.
Other than that, a factory reset may also help, or at least rule out any software issues.
Note: Please back up all your data as running this reset will delete any data on your machine which Lenovo cannot be responsible for. 1.  Turn the machine off and press the recovery button which is located usually next to the power button. If you have a desktop machine you will need to power the machine back on and keep tapping the F2 key. 2.  Use the arrow keys and press enter on system recovery. ( Desktop users can skip this) 3.  Select ?restore from the initial backup? and then ?Next?. 4.  Click ?start? and accept the warning messages. Length of time can vary depending on the speed of the machine.

If the above doesnt work, then this is likely a fault with the cable in the unit, something may have got shifted, or simply an issue with the panel itself, in this instance, it`s best to call your local Lenovo support line. Link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

When I plug-in headphones everything is ok,but when nothing is plugged-in and when I work with touchpad, volume notifications go crazy (they start to display randomly even if I don't touch volume buttons or change volume in windows). Can you help me with that problem? Thanks!Hrvoje

Answer:SL510 Volume on-screen notifications

It might have something to do with the UltraNav driver. I was having terrible problems with the touchpad - it was virtually unusable due to freezing - and Lenovo was unable to help me, so I reformatted the hard drive, as a last resort. Now, I don't have the UltraNav driver and the touchpad works fine, but my on-screen notifications have disappeared.  I tried re-installing the UltraNav driver, but the touchpad stopped working again, so I uninstalled it.   .. hey mylegitches,

for the on screeen display, try uninstalling the Hotkey and Power Manager software. restart your unit, download both software from our support site and reinstall.

as got the unknown device, could you post a screenshot of it here ?  Though looking at the ACPI part, I do recommend checking the version of the BIOS that you have.

currently the SL510's latest BIOS is version 1.47/1.03

Hi Lenovo forum ! I just recently got an SL510 and though it makes a nice little Linux machine, the 1366x768 resolution is kind of tiny.So I'm wondering, can I replace the LCD with a full HD panel of the same size, what precautions should I take, and will there be any compatibilty issues if it's from, say, a W510 like this ? I guess the main issue with this is, if they use the same cable ? Does anyone know ?

Answer:SL510 and full HD screen replacement ?

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

As per the psref document of Lenovo ThinkPad SL510, none of the models were shipped with a Full HD screen. Hence, it would be difficult to find a compatible Full HD display that fits in. In addition to swapping the LCD panel you would also need to change the connecting cable from motherboard to FHD screen.

Refer this thread where richk had detailed regarding the possibilities of swapping the display from HD to Full HD.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Mithun.

When I first began using the SL510, my eyes were feeling strain and trouble focusing. I began noticing that on some programs is was evident there was red shadowing, especially on bold letters. It is evident in most programs. It can be lessened by moving the screen and increased by moving the screen and green will filter in also. The store I bought it from say it is just a matter of preference by the user even though they see the same. Problem is I have a 6 year old Acer that has a TFT LCD screen and have never had this kind of problem. This screen requires max brightness to be usable and I have tried all the resolution and color adjustments to no avail. I worked with the clear type both on and off. Nothing. I have it running on the default settings now, but must keep the brightness at the max 15 setting or the screen is too dark. Help.

Answer:New SL510 with matt screen has red shadowing on fonts

hey travel4100,try uninstalling the current display drivers for your unit. let windows install its generic drivers and see if there is any improvement.if there is improvement, then go to http://support.lenovo.com , download the latest display driver and install it. check again.

I've got a ThinkPad SL510 model 2847-9UU and I would like to upgrade the processor and the LCD screen.Looking at different documents shared here I found these two parts:Intel Core i7-620M Processor (2.66 GHz) 15.6 inch (1600x900) HD+ I was wondering if I can just buy the parts and replace them. Is there any compatibility issues I should be aware of? If the i7 is not an option is the T9600 (2.80 GHz) my best next choice? My laptop right now has a 1366x768 resolution. Will the 1600x900 display work? Has anybody here made these upgrades? Thanks

Answer:ThinkPad SL510 Processor and Screen upgrade

First, the T9600 and the I7 are different sockets, I think. The T9600 should be the correct socket, though I do not know if compatible. What cpu do you have now?As for the LCD swap, may not work due to different cabling, etc.Would be nice, though!

Hi guys,I have this problem with my SL510 that it will start up, then I have a choice to start windows normally or start it up with fixing windows (sorry I don't know what this is actually called in English). No matter which I choose, it will say windows searching for files and then it will open the rescue and recovery screen and get stuck in it. I recently took the fan off to clean it since the laptop was quickly overheating and this is the first time booting it after that. Could it be that the fan is not correctly put back on? I tried to check it and it seems like it's working but I can't say for sure. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi everyone. I am wondering if this is a quick fix problem I have going on or something I should take my computer back into the store I bought it from, since it is only about a week old at the moment. Probably about a handful of times in the past week, my screen has just randomly gone black. If I am doing something, like watching a program that requires sound, the sound still works. Internet stays working. The screen comes back when I use the touchpad very quickly, but my display settings are changed when I get the screen to come back. Ok, scratch that...for the first time ever now while writing this message here, my computer just sent itself into hybernation mode or something while I was typing. That was strange. When it came back it also just reset my settings back to normal. (like, the color of the tabs, and the background desktop image).  I am wondering whats going on here...my first thought is that I used to have a computer that would shut itself off when it was overheating...but...that computer felt quite hot...this doesn't. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

I own a Thinkpad SL510 (purchased six years ago) that originally came with Windows 7, but was upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago. After the upgrade, I attempted to turn it on, but after the Windows loading screen, the screen would come on - for a split second - and then shut right back off (the laptop itself still on). After trying different things to get it to successfully boot up, I found that if I just leave it in BIOS Setup for fifteen minutes, and then exit out of Setup, it would start just fine. This was a few months ago, and I soon got used to starting it up this way. However, with school being back in session, it's getting to be a bit of an inconvenience, and I'd like to know if there is something I can do to fix this problem and once again be able to start it up like normal. If my description of the problem wasn't clear enough, I can provide a video as well.

SL510 62-bit can take up to 8GB ram.I replaced the 1GB  by Samsung with a Hynix 4GB.  At Crucial they give specs that are replacable for existing ram.  I notice one number is different.  The original Samsung says PC3 -10600, and the new Hynix says PC3-12800.  The 12800 was given by crucial as part of the replacement numbers for the SL510.  I bought at EBay used. Anyway, I bootup and a blank, black screen results.  I hear laptop running.  I forced closed it and re-started again.  Same...black screen as I hear laptop running.Any ideas as to what happened? and what can correct?I suppose I'll have to change back to original ram and see what happens. Also, is there a certain order for rams to be installed?  Originally, the 1GB ram was first, and the 2GB was below.  I installed the 4GB ram below and moved the 2GB to top first position. (in case I want to access the 2GB easily to upgrade with another 4GB) Thank you so much.Massachusetts

Answer:blank screen after memory ram changed SL510

UPDATE:   I put back the original 1 GB ram, with both original rams (1GB & 2GB)  placed in their original positions.  I've got the screen back.  So that's good. But why won't it work with the new 4GB (and existing 2GB) ram?

We´ve tried already to press the power button a few times to reset the computer. Didn´t work as well. The keyboard doesn´t accept any hot key combinations. Hello, I recently purchased a SL510. The anti-glare mat screen causes me severe eyestrain. I?m considering replacing the LCD 15.6 LED mat for a LCD 15.6 LED glossy screen. Has anyone done this?  Any compatibility issues to be aware of? How can I verify compatibility of the new screen?  Also, will this affect my warranty? Thanks in advance, J.

Hello I have an SL510, which when I power on freezes on the very first screen it shows. This is the big ThinkPad screen which reads "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button" and has an Intel logo in the top right corner.I can push the ThinkVantage button or anything else and nothing happens.Ctrl-Alt-Del does not reboot the computer. The only way to get away from the screen is to remove power and battery or hold the power button for 8 seconds. I have tried removing power and removing and reinserting the memory. As it does not even get to the loading screens there is no way to boot on a CD, USB or any other media.I have tried every key on the keyboard. Seems like a BIOS failure to me. Anyone know a solution or a few steps in the right direction? Thank you!

Answer:Booting up freezes on very first ThinkPad BIOS screen - SL510

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

This sometimes happens due to faulty had drive. Remove the hard drive and then power on the laptop and check if you can enter BIOS. If you can access BIOS without hard drive, that confirms an issue with hard drive.

If the laptop is still under warranty, please contact the technical support before removing hard drive to avoid any warranty related issues.

Keep me posted on the result.

My SL510 does not boot anymore. Maybe something was damaged due to a static discharge. It would be great if the service team could help me with the diagnostics!   1. How it happened The WiFi did not work, even though it was enabled in the BIOS.I read somewhere in the internet, that removing the (CR2032) recovery battery fixes this.I removed the AC adapter, the battery and the recovery battery, and pressed the power button long enough to discharge. Then, I re-assembled anything, and the computer did not boot any more. To remove the recovery battery, I used a screw driver which touched the mainboard.Maybe a static discharge from the screw driver damaged something? 2. Symptoms a) With recovery battery, HDD, RAM and DVD drive The screen stays black. The HDD goes on and off, the HDD spins up.The DVD drive tries to read a disc, none is inserted. The Wifi light stays on.The computer does not beep. The computer restarts itself after ~3 seconds. b) Without recovery battery, with HDD and RAM Like a), but the computer does not restart itself after ~3 seconds. Also, the CPU fan turns up after ~30 seconds. c) Without RAM The computer beeps a few times. d) Without HDD The HDD light stays off, rest as a)/b). e) Without DVD drive No DVD read-in can be heard, rest as a)/b). 3. What I measured All USB ports. I have tried the hold down the power key  repair, but that hasn'tworked. I've tried to boot without battery and with battery but unplugged. I found the suggestion about the USB ports being damaged and that could be my problem but I am a computer novice when it comes to hardware. I don't understand how to check the contacts as has been suggested, in the USB ports. Could someone explain exactly what I would do? When I look at my ports they have a little bar looking thing that is not shown in the photo I found referenced on this site.

Answer:SL510 doesn't boot past Lenovo screen

You are probably looking at an image of a port that has the little bar looking thing broken out already.

There's supposed to be a little plastic bar.  It should have 4 metal contacts laid in parallel along it.  If those contacts get twisted they can short to each other or the metal shell and prevent the laptop from booting.

Not to say that's the problem, but it's something to check.

I'm having a devil of a time finding a good photo.  Here's the best I can find ATM:

Hello, my SL510 has a problem with its graphics. With the graphics driver Intel 4 series express chipset enabled, the internal display is black and seemingly completely switched off , yet any external monitor works. When booting, the internal display works until the login-screen should appear (which activates the real driver with full resolution I guess). Without this driver, so with the standard driver up to 1024 px, the internal display works perfectly. This happend suddenly when switching on this morning. Everything was fine until then, and I had not changed anything. I uninstalled and re-installed the driver and the Monitor Info a few times, with the ever same result. Has anyone an idea for this problem? Might it be hardware or software? Thank you very much, best regardsMichael

Hi there! I've got my new SL510 (Mod. 2847) for a month now and experience the following graphics issue.Whenever I startup Windows 7 using the recent driver for the Intel Intel Mobile 4 Series Express Chipset Family - Video Card,I get a black screen after the Windows Startup-Message. The System seems to start normally as I hear the Desktop Startup Sound after a while. (On the other hand, I cannot shut down the System via ALT-F4.) Anyhow, everything is working fine, when starting with the Intel Drivers deactivated (with the Standard VGA Driver, that is.)But that's not really a longterm solution because the max resolution is too low and the graphics are crap compared to what the Intel Chipset can do, I guess. My first idea was to use an older driver version, which doesn't seem to be available. Also, I was looking for some sort of a generic Video driver with which I could at least use resolutions higher than 1024 x 768 but no luck on that front either.   Any Ideas? Thanks and best, Juphile

Hey everyone.Just encountered my first real problem with my (about 2 years old) SL510. I can't find out the exact type of my SL510 right now, but it's the model with an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz, 320GB HDD and an ATI Mobility Radeon. The problem: When I turn the SL510 on, it seems that the display gets powered on (i.e. background light seems to work), but absolutely nothing appears on the screen. No BIOS message, nothing. For about 1 second I can see the HDD LED lighting up, and I vaguely hear some HDD sound for that long, but then both LED and sound stop, and nothing else happens. This is the state the machine remains in.I can't get into the BIOS by pressing f-keys, nor can I boot from another device.Things I already tried:  Remove RAM. In that case, I hear a sequence of BIOS beeps, which leads me to believe the BIOS is not the problem.  Replace RAM. Put in an older RAM brick that worked, doesn't change anything. So probably not a RAM problem either.  Taking the PC off the power, taking out both the main battery and the CMOS battery. Also, pressing the power key for about 1 minute. Reason: I read somewhere that sometimes a bad hibernation state can be fixed like this, but it didn't seem to help in my case. Removing the HDD entirely. The SL510 beeps twice, then nothing else happens.  Checking for damaged USB ports, because I read somewhere they can cause a short circuit which would explain the symptoms.[/list]That's all I tried so fa... Odd issue, been playing with computers since the 90s and never seen this happen. All of a sudden like my keyboard and sometimes my mouse are unresponsive at the windows 7 login screen. Sometimes the mouse works, sometimes it doesnt. If it doesnt work initially on power up it has worked every time so far after a reboot. Keyboard works just fine in the bios and just fine in windows after i use the onscreen keyboard to log in if the mouse is working but no response on the login screen. Capslock/numluck and any other button that should activate or change lights on the keyboard have zero effect when the keyboard is unresponsive.

Anyone ever seen anything like this? Ive just recently formatted/reinstalled a couple times without issue. Have been playing around with some virtual machine and vpn programs. Using avast antivirus this time around, used avg before, nothing else should really be different. Ive formatted hundreds of times and never seen this, pretty sure hardware is not the cause as it works fine before/after login screen. No strange new software that I can think of other than a vpn software program which ive only used in a virtual machine environment. Unless I somehow got a virus or malware that avast and malwarebytes cant detect Im kinda stumped, cant seem to figure this one out on my own, any thoughts? I spose the easy answer is just format again but I hate having a problem I cant solve.

I should mention i did try uninstalling avast as would be the first obvious step ... Read more

Ok, here's the background. My wife's pc (identical to my own, and running on Windows XP)was restarting at shutdown recently on it's own and I saw an error that said there was some kind of driver error. So, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers in hopes of installing the most recent ones. I don't know if this was the issue, but I was troubleshooting and I noticed that there was a recent driver update.

Well now I can't log on at all, because when I get to the windows login screen, the mouse and keyboard won't work. I see for an instance the cursor shows an hourglass, then nothing. I see the blinking cursor in the login field, but I can't type anything in there, and the mouse doesn't work.

So, I tried to do a system restore but it just sent me to the login screen, and no mouse or keyboard function persisted. When I tried to go into safe mode, it asked me what was the boot device I wanted to use (which after some searching I see is also an indicator of a problem, but I'm not sure what it means). I picked my HD and continued to do a restore to the last working config, and the same deal, can't login, no mouse or keyboard use at that sceen.

So, I tried going into safe and it shows both an administrator icon and my wife's user name, and I can't try either because again, the moust and keyboard aren't working here either!

I tried to boot with the windows xp disc in, even picked the boot source from the boot menu as floppy and again as the cd-rom. I read that doing so can sometim... Read more

Hi, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 15 with Windows 8 and was having an issue where videos were not playing and restarted my computer, left the room for a minute and came back to see it was updating. When the update completed I was able to log on, but there was only a black screen with a cursor. I tried restarting my computer and had the same result, and followed the first bit of advice in this thread (here) as the issue described was the same, and successfully opened the task manager to have the system boot in safe mode. However, when I restarted my computer it did not progress past the boot screen where I was greeted with nothing but a black screen. This has happened every time I have restarted and I am unable to access safe mode or log on normally, although I can reach the Advanced Startup Options screen.
Is there any way to fix this issue?

Hi, I just discovered a problem with vista. I recently installed an outstanding software known as TuneUp Utilities 2009, I then used it to customize my computer login screen, I made a modification such that on startup or when no one is logged (i.e. when the login screen is displayed), in case there has been no activity for 10 minutes, vista's built in bubble screensaver begins to run. Unfortunately, when I tested this modification out, I noticed a screensaver error stating that "direct3d 9.0 is required to run this screensaver and can't be found on your computer", so I logged in and tried running the screensaver again and it worked perfectly.
Why is it not working on the login screen but it works on the desktop screen? How do I confirm the version of direct x I have installed, because I recently made an update on my direct x, I tried updating it to 10.XXX and the same problem is still occurring. Please reply asap.

Hi ! Did you create a system repair CD or a system recovery drive?? Here are the ways that you can recover. My first choice would be to restore to a time before the update with a restore point! Read this by HTG! How to Create and Use a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc in Windows 8 or 10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...covery-options
PS! Using a Recovery Drive or System Repair Disc
A recovery drive will normally not be necessary. If your computer fails to boot several times, Windows 8 or 10 will automatically bring up the advanced startup options, which allows you to troubleshoot and fix it.
If Windows can?t even bring up these tools, you?ll need the recovery drive, system repair disc, or a Windows 8 or 10 installation disc. Insert the recovery media into your computer and restart. Your computer should boot from the recovery media automatically. (If it doesn?t, you may need to change its boot order.)

I have a X61t running Vista Business and sometimes want to log in while set as a slate.   I realized after a while that I have *never* made that work. I experimented more carefully watching my stylus taps and saw that the keyboard is not sending the right codes - or something like that - so I always get the message "Password incorrect". My password is nothing super elaborate or long. There is one numeral and the first character is shifted. Nothing in what I used to thjink of as high ASCII in the old days. As far as I know the tablet keyboard works fine in other apps. I have used it to fill in a form or two. Anyone have any thoughts? Jonathan

Hello nice people !

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.

Here's what happened:

I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.

I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (?), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.

Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).

I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:

1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name

So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

If anyone has an idea, that would be greatly approciated.

Answer:Changing the local user login name on the login screen

Hi, I'm new here. I created this account for help because my mother's password seems changed and she couldn't login, the keyboard wasn't sticky so she didn't mistype, caps lock wasn't on. I typed it my self and it didn't work, restarted the computer and it didn't work neither. I then go to thinking it was hacked and the password was simply changed. I go looking around for password changing boots for my flashdrive. I burned PASSCAPE on to my 16gig 2-1 flashdrive. Tried booting on all settings, booted normally, didn't work. So, I ignored it for a while and kept clicking "Reset password" button, It showed up as "Passcape" but claimed the usb slot was empy, wasn't; the slot is "F". I gave up hope on it, so I found this youtube video to reset it the manual labor way-here's the link to it: " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtJ-iDdWC0 " So, continuing on..

I was simply following the video's instructions, so at step one at duration "2:02" I have to cause a error, I just keep shutting-down the pc while it's booting, because windows will assume it's an error after 2 - 3 times of doing so. Okay, by the time I get to "Repair your computer" button I press enter. And the shocking surprise I get which is odd is this in quotes:

She never told me exactly what was the problem everyone, all she said is "Did you change the password" (waking me up at 8AM) then "The password is changed and I can't get on!" What is this problem we are experiencing-i've never seen this before.
