hard disk fails on Vista (R400)

Question: hard disk fails on Vista (R400)

hi, i'm having serious troubles with hdd usage on win vista. it appeared twice just after each other. maybe this is caused by driver or software failure, really dont know. so - nothing just Microsoft Office 2007 and Mozilla Firefox is running on computer. after few minutes of writing, i see that HDD led is continuously lighting (not blinking). when i want to see "Computer", i get blank window. when i try to run Task manager (Ctrl-Shift-Escape) it freezes and i can't see nothing. so last thing what i run is some tool for seeing system health, which shows 100% HDD usage... but suddenly after few moments, it went down - graph is low, but HDD led is still lightning.after all, when i want restart or shutdown computer, it takes many many many minutes to logout and shutdown. also, when shutdown screen dissapears, computer "freezes" with LCD turned off. on chasi, HDD icon, power icon and battery icon is lightning, but computer is freezed. i have to push power button for few seconds to turn computer off. here, there are few screenshots of system and photos of notebook during this issue. (i get blank windows when run "Computer") (system health) (disk led is lighting still) (when "Shutdown" process is ending) when using linux, there is nothing such this... maybe this is some issue with ms office, but i haven't find anything about something like that. thanks for any reply PSvista are up to date, drivers are up to date. vista installation is 3 weeks old, and i'm using linux now mostly, so i dont think that this is due to "corrupted" windows.also maybe important information is that i'm using Eset Smart Security (version 3)...

Preferred Solution: hard disk fails on Vista (R400)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have tried it on my laptop which has XP and there are no problems. I have had the same problem with USB memory sticks. Anyone got any ideas?? Any help appreciated.....

hi,i'm happy new owner of Lenovo R400 since wednesday!  *hurray* ! i have just few questions about OEM system. i got Windows Vista Bussines OEM, and i was little bit disgusted seeing the mess on root (C:\).by ThinkVintage something i have burned recovery disc:"Recovery disk" then, i went to "My Computer", clicked to "Lenovo (Q" partition and some piece of software got me trought burning of some recovery discs:"Start Recovery Disc""Product Recovery Disc 1""Product Recovery Disc 2""Recovery Disc" so hope, that is all what i would need if something happend to partitions... now, i want to manage root of main (and only one usable partition) (C. i see bunch of dirs:AuthLogDRIVERSmfgProgram FilesProgramDataRRbackupsSWShareSWTOOLSSWWorkSystem Volume InformationUsersWindows i know, that "Windows", "Users" and "Program Files" dirs are system directories (such as on Windows XP). also there are few hidden dirs, which i do not understand - but never ming.i just want to know, if i can remove "DRIVERS", "mfg", "SWShare", "SWTOOLS" and "SWWorks". these folders contains evidently installers and such cab files (i think) - so is it possible to remove this? i have burned these folders. and second thing is - is these files included on "recovery" ? i browsered .wim file, and i did not found these files, but maybe it is hidden somewhere else? second question is about managing disk partitions in "My Computer" - can i hide "Lenovo (Q" and "SERVICE003 (S" - and also - can i r... Answer:R400, Win Vista OEM - which directories can i remove? how can i manage disk partitions?

I have a similar problem.  My Thinkpad R400 came preloaded with Vista SP1 .  Having used XP all along, I find using Vista a pain.  Moreover, the hard drive has only one usable partition called Preload C:/.  I tried using different Partition software including Acronis, but I am unable to partition the hard drive.  Why does Lenovo make things difficult for non geek users like me?  I am now stuck with an OS I do not want and without an option to use other OSes since I am unable to partition my hard disk. Any suggestions on partitioning would be welcome.

D060904, welcome to the forum, I'm sorry, but it's not clear to me what you are asking. Do you mean the the boot process is not being shown on the external screen, that nothing shows on the external screens or something else? If it's regarding booting you will need to set the external screen as boot display device in bios. I have 2 HD's on my computer (primary master & primary slave). Master is Maxtor & slave is a Samsung HD. it has been working fine for over a year now. 2 days back while booting I got the message "primary hard drive fails".

I checked the BIOS settings & found that it had lost the settings for my master HD. I rebooted again and it booted fine & the master HD settings in BIOS came back. I thought that probably my CMOS battery was dying so I replaced it. The same symptoms have come back after that. The system keeps loosing the primary HD settings in the BIOS. it has never lost the settings on the slave drive ever. sometimes it will recognize the master drive but still fail to boot giving a error "boot disk failure".

if I turn it off for a while and power it back up, the system will boot up properly sometimes & at other times it refuses to boot. I am not sure where the problem is since it has been working for 1+ yrs now.

Is my HD failing?. it is only 1+ yr old. But since it boots up sometimes, I tend to think otherwise.
Something wrong in the MB?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Answer:Primary Hard disk fails

Make sure that Hard drive connections (cable and power) are tight. You can download a hard drive diagnostic program from the Maxtor web site and run it, although an intermittent problem might not show up. It sounds like your hard drive is failing and you should make sure that you have backed up all important data before it goes completely.

Hi, I have a system here that does not always detect the harddisk during startup (Detecting IDE Drives ...). If it does detect it, it will show the primary and secondary drives, the HD led stays on for a few seconds, then the screen jumps to black with a cursor blinking in the upper left corner: _ (In those few seconds I can still access the BIOS).

If it doesn't detect the HD, it continues the POST till it gives the BOOT FAILURE message.

I was actually trying to fix the problem that the system locks up during some applications. I had already run the WD diagnostics tool for the WD HD and it showed that everything was fine yesterday. I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool (from a bootdisk) and that one did not show errors, but the pc did restart automatically during the test not at specific points. (just before that there is a short pitching sound). I removed the dust inside the pc and checked the cables. And it was still working after that. I closed the case and moved it aside a bit and this morning the problem started that it does not always detect the HD and that it doesn't startup even when the hard disk is detected. I have run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool again when it failed to detect the HD and it still gives no errors, and now the problem that the system restarts automatically during that test, is gone.

But I don't know what is wrong with it now and I've gone from a system that locks up regularly to a system that does not even starts... Read more

It always fails to Clone/copy my current hard that has bad sectors, to a new hard disk. My present HDD is a 320GB and its health is really bad. I bought a new 500 hard disk and tried to clone and copy the whole HDD. I tried Paragon HDD Manager, O&O disk image and other two Software. All of them failed to clone or copy my old hard disk to new one.

What is the best solution. Paragon, copied data partially and gave an error at 80%. I tried few times and the same thing happened

Answer:Always fails to Clone/copy old hard disk with bad sector

Maybe try running

chkdsk {drive letter} /f
as in
chkdsk D: /f

on the older drive it will identify and lock out the errant sectors. The "/F" means "Fix" so run it first without that and see what it returns as "Bad Sectors" then try the clone.

I just bought a Western Digital Black hard drive: WD Caviar Black 1TB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive for Desktops WDBAAZ0010HNC-NRSN - Best Buy

I have it attached to this motherboard: GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-P35-S3G (rev. 1.0)

The symptoms of my computer are that Windows may run very slow, disk usage is high, and Windows explorer will stop responding often. When I boot into safe mode and run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic the extended test succeeds. When I'm not in safe mode it fails and says "too many bad sectors." The quick test does not finish in Normal mode and says something like "error code 02 - interrupted by a hard or soft reset."

Windows update will also say "Windows cannot search for updates with error code C80001FE."

What could be the reason for this and how can I trouble shoot it?

I have installed all the drivers necessary on my computer. I have AHCI set in the BIOS also. It is a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate.

Answer:Hard Disk Check Fails In Normal Mode

I would RMA the drive back to Best Buy and get a replacement. The drive is obviously bad. It happens a lot more often than many people think. Erase the drive and take it back and tell them it is defective and failed Western Digital's diagnostic test.

using axiomatic software i backedup my system partition of 20 gb to the 80 gb exboot usb external disk.

the external disk boots, reaches the windows splash screen, i can see the moving illuminated squares, but windows fails to load.

the computer reboots and goes to the screen which asks whether to load normally, or safe mode etc?

i tried the options, safe mode etc, but no luck.

I have a two year old HP Pavillion (now a year out of waranty) that crashed and now returns "disk read error press ctl+alt+del to restart" when attempting to boot. Using the diagnostic tools avialable under F2, I get the following failure: Hard Drive Short DST Check: FailedFailure ID: GLL3S1-76684P-MFPV7G-60RA03Product ID: E9Z18AV Would anyone be so kind as to tell me what this particular failure ID code means?  Thank you.

Answer:Disk Read Error on boot, Hard Drive Short DST Check fails

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

Cheers, Darren (newbie)

Answer:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

I know this is completely off the subject but I need to get hold of a Toshiba Portege R400 Recovery disc s my computer has crashed
And I?m unable to do anything. I called up Toshiba, saying that I hadn't received my original in its box, but they just told me I had to buy a new one which will cost me an extra ?30.

Does anyone have a downloaded version that I could use?

Kind Regards

Answer:Need Portege R400 recovery disk

The Toshiba recovery disk cannot be downloaded.
Your R400 should be equipped with the recovery disk and I have no idea why you didn?t receive it?
This should be a case for your notebook dealer?

However, the recovery disk can be ordered from the Toshiba ASP? of course you will have to pay for this disk?

At the other hand you could install the OS from your Win XP disk and then you could install the XP drivers from the Toshiba driver page!

Is it possible to order XP downgrade disk for Portege R400?

Answer:Can I order the XP downgrade disk for Portege R400

I doubt this is possible.
Your Portege R400 was delivered with preinstalled Vista. Am I right?

Well, as far as I know there is only one Toshiba image for this notebook model and it?s only a VISTA 32BIT ULTIMATE.

But of course you could install the own Win XP using the MS Windows XP disk.
There is just only one small problem; the Win XP drivers are not released for the Portege R400 model. I didn?t find any on the Toshiba European driver page.

So you will have to collect the drivers at your own hand?

Hi everyone,i have a question about a Second Hard Drive Bay Adapter for a R400 7439 i have looked all over and some say 9.5mm and some say 12mm so if someone could tell me what part number or size to get! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Go to Solution.

Answer:Second Hard Drive Bay Adapter R400

Hi John, you can actually use either one. Your R400 natively accepts a 12.7mm height optical drive, as you can see in System service parts - ThinkPad R400, T400. (Scroll down a little to 12.7mm height drives and you will see your R400 type "7439" listed). However, you can use the 9.5mm height hard drive bay adapter as documented by Lenovo marketing themselves: ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III - Overview. It will fit, but leaves a little bit of a gap. A 12.7mm height hard drive bay adapter would provide the perfect fit for your R400. One advantage of the 9.5mm height adapter is you could potentially re-use it on systems such as T400, T500, W500, etc. whereas the 12.7mm height adapter would not fit those models.

Yet from the same partition i'm able to boot into a "dual boot type install" of LUbuntu which im using just fine right now
On my other hard drive with a windows 10 install. check disk reports NO errors

Trying to boot from the windows 7 install dual boot begins booting but almost instantly kicks to an old style loading bar then goes to startup repair
and it fails with the problem being "bad hard drive"

but somehow it LUbuntu has no problem booting when i select to boot from it instead of windows 7
all of my data MUST be intact because otherwise i wouldn't be able to boot at all. and i can see all the files on my drive just fine

When I tried to boot in safe mode. it stopped after a few system files were loaded then went to startup repair. I dont remember the file it stopped at.

I have no idea how to solve this??
Is there some way to do a full repair of windows 7? not just the silly startup repair?

This is a very urgent frustrating and serious problem

Hi - I keep getting the message that a backup failed due to less than 400 MB on the Windows disk. I have about 350 GB available on the disk!

Other backups have worked OK. I have seen a long thread on the Microsoft site with lots of people saying they have the same intermittent problem, but no solution. Anyone know what causes this?

I'm working Home Premium, and backup up to another hard disk on the same machine which also has lots of free space.

Just a couple of simple questions, which you may have already covered.
How much space is on the C drive.(where Vista is installed)
On the 'Where do you want to save your backup' page, you are sure it is your second drive and not the 'Recovery' partition.

I'll keep this short.

1. Vista full installation ISO disc created

2. Disc boots up fine in an XP computer (so disc is fine)

3. Disc does NOT boot up in the Vista computer (my dilemma)

4. XP disc boots up fine in the Vista computer (so CD-ROM is fine)
What could possibly be wrong here? The only remote thing I can think about is that this is a 32-bit install as opposed to 64-bit. I am not sure which bit is in this computer and I am not even sure that really matters. It is a Toshiba A205-s5801 which came from factory with Windows Vista.

Answer:Arrrrgh!!! Vista ISO boot disk FAILS to boot

Hi all,

Portege R400 comes with Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit and Vista is honestly - truly - incredibly slow! (especially with R400, because of the notebook configuration)
So I decided to install Windows XP Tablet PC.. But I found out that there is no XP driver available for R400.

I'm not complaining directly about the Portege models/series..
It is a great design and I purchased it, knowing the configuration. But I didn't know how Vista was hungry for system resources..

I do complain about Toshiba's policy or what-so-ever about ONLY providing Vista drivers and no XP drivers.
Microsoft is desperate to sell Vista because they know they truly failed this time and I hear stories about how they block their own XP market.

...and I suspect that Microsoft and Toshiba may have a deal about "only selling Vista notebooks"... (only a guess but it seems so.. correct me if I'm wrong)

It's a torture to use Vista on Portege R400 and on other equivalent configurations. (even when all system visual effects, etc disabled)
On the other hand, I cannot use my XP tablet on R400.. so...

So, believe me when I say I'll throw it out!
But before I do that, if any of you know a solution to my problem; please let me know,
because I've paid lots of money for this turtle.

PS: Hope this is a democratic platform and my post does not get erased or modified.

Answer:Portege R400: Very slow performance with Vista Ultimate

Hi there,

First of all, you don't have to suspect Microsoft or Toshiba having a deal with Vista. Toshiba is truly not the onyl one, primary selling units with just a VIsta OS, nearly every notebook manufacturer does it.
And you are right, Vista is a slow operating system, as it has a newly user interface with lots of graphic effects here and there and many features like sidebar you really don't need at all.

As I bought my first Vista only notebook in beginning of the year I thought too, that I don't want this to be installed and want my XP back and so on and there were no XP drivers available on manufacturers download page either. I have a non Toshiba notebook, and had the same frustration as you.

Now I got two possibilities, check every important device on my own via google or using driver installation tools such as driver genius or pimp my Vista.
First I did an installation of XP, searching every driver I needed, which didn't took my as much as I thought it would. But after a while I wanted to give the new Microsoft OS a chance.

Used recovery discs and first a erased all software I didn't need it, so goodbye nearly every tool pre-installed on my machine, which wasn't microsoft's own.
Disabled many features I didn't want and what can I say, speed was increased a lot! This brought my to buy a original version of Vista, made a clean installation of it, installed all necessary drivers and hey, I'm happy with it.

So, to come to an end with my long story, you ha... Read more

If I don't have my Recovery DVD that came with my Portege R400-S4832 laptop could I use another users Vista OS DVD to install Vista using the product key that came on the bottom of my Portege?

If not, is it a hassle to request a Recovery DVD from Toshiba?

Thank you.

Answer:Can I use OEM product key of Portege R400-S4832 to re-installing Vista

Well, what to say? in my personal knowledge it?s not possible to activate the other version of Vista with the OEM key from Toshiba.
This key was assigned only to this OEM version and it should not work with other Vista CD/DVD.

However, I found this another thread in this forum about Vista installation and activation and the last user ?potatohead? has reported that he was able activate the OEM Vista version with the phone;

This is very interesting but for me really unbelievable. Anyway, it?s worth a try.
If you will get more details from Microsoft please post this here.

You feedback would be really appreciated.

I saw you other threads about your Port?g? R400 and to be honest I don?t know what you have done with this unit.
Usually the notebook should functions correctly with the preinstalled software.

Maybe you have muddled the OS and therefore all this issue happens? Who knows? ?:|

Why you don?t use the Toshiba recovery CD and try to reinstall the whole OS.
The recovery procedure will take about 10-15 min and all drivers and tools will install too.

I hope after this procedure every issue will go away

So, earlier today, everything was fine. My computer was working normally nothing was acting up. While unplugging my laptop from the wall I dropped it, but nothing appeared to be wrong. A little while later I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a minute and then everything froze in windows explorer, nothing would work, folders wont open task manager never appears start menu wont come up, nothing.
I booted into safe mode and everything works fine through there, so I looked around online and one suggestion was to update my BIOS so I tried to update from Dells Inspiron 1420 A08 to the newer A10 BIOS version, trying that in safe mode failed so I tried to boot normally and quickly do whatever it told me, when I tried it wouldnt restart (and still refuses too, I have to shut it down manually outside of safe mode) it said it couldnt update the BIOS version because it couldnt locate the image, but I downloaded it directly from Dells own website.
So then I tried to do a system restore, and I got the message:

The disk Vista (c:) has errors
Windows detected file system corruption on Vista (c:)
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

So I clicked scan and fix, and nothing happens. (this is back in safe mode by the way) so I opened a command promp and typed sfc /scannow
and it scanned and found some errors but were unable to fix them. Details are located in the CBS.log
So I opened the log and I found the following:

Hi, the first rule if you ever drop a laptop (and it appears OK) is to take the battery out, boot from the mains if all is OK turn off add battery and reboot. Now you may have damaged the MB and or the RAM seating or HDD cable connection as well as the monitor connect cable.. etc ...etc. You can see where this is heading to the shop would be my advice.

I bought a new hard disk, which is faster/quieter than my old one. I currently have XP on the new one and Vista on the old one. I use Vista for all my main stuff.

What i would really like, is to have my vista installation on the new disk instead of XP. Can i transfer the installation in any way? If i install Vista on it from scratch, can i use the same product key? I'm not really worried about losing my XP install as it serves no real purpose to me.

Answer:Vista on a new hard disk

Yes if you install Vista on the new one you can use the same product key. You can use the same product key on the same machine as many times as you want.

The only true way to transfer the install would be to make aImage of the drive with Acronis or Ghost.

Answer:R400 + Vista = Freezing heaven, BSOD kingdom, HDD lags etc.

I recommend that you install System Update from here to make sure that you're running all the recommended system software. You do not need to install every Lenovo utility. Though, it is highly recommended that you install:all drivers like: Lenovo System Interface Driver, Intel Chipset, ...Power ManagerACPI Power ManagementI also had the symptom "machine is running hot and crashes when it's supposed to be sleeping". Though, I could never track it down. I gues that I might have moved my notebook too quickly before it has entered standby and by moving it, the Active Protection System for the harddisk kicks in. But that is just speculation. I also have the symptom "slow power management operations" - see here. Though, it seems not to be a widely recognized issue. Part of it can be attributed to Vista, I guess.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Does anyone have any idea of the ... Read more

Answer:Can't format hard-disk nor do partition when using boot disk. Hard-disk failure

It sounds like it might be the bootable CD you've created is not picking up the HDD's/partitions.
To eliminate this as a posibility travel to bootdisk and grab the WinME bootdisk and boot from there. If it picks up the HDD you can FDISK and Format from there.
The other option is to boot using the XP CD and let it handle the formatting/partitioning duties...

I've read many, many posts on many web sites on how to do this. In all cases, the poster did not have a DVD drive. That is not my situation.

Here is what I want to do.
I want to setup an unattended install of Vista 64 bit for my PC. I want to copy the contenets of the Vista DVD drive to a partition on my second hard drive.
I want to start with NO operating system on my PC.
I want to boot to something other than CD/DVD: could be hard disk, USB drive, floppy.
The reason I want to do this is simple. I'm an IT professional. I reload my PC frequently due to testing of software on my PC. Please don't reply with using other software like RollbackRx, etc. I know about those and use them.

I've read articles on how to create a bootable USB to install VITA. Didn't work.

To give you a better idea of what I want to do, here is how I install XP.
1. I use Disk Director to make a 30G Fat32 partition on first drive.
2. Second drive has a fat 32 partition with copy of WinXP install CD in a folder along with unattend.txt, etc.
3. I boot to a DOS floppy and then run setup from the second hard drive telling it to use the first hard drive (which is C:) and the unattend.txt file.

This works very fast since the source is on the hard disk.

Answer:How to install Vista from hard disk.

Create an image of the hard drive you want Vista on while Vista is installed
Store that image on a partition
Create a bootable USB with Symantec/Norton Ghost on it and image from A to B

I'm not exactly sure how to create the image, or how to make the bootable USB with Ghost, but I have a working bootable USB with Ghost that was given to me at my old job, so its deffinitly possible, the technique is out there somewhere

I know it works by emulating a floppy disk if that helps

Try going to the page, right click and select a different view settings. See if that helps.

If not select a different setting, boot up and then change to the one that you want, see if that helps. It looks like some small corruption.

If that does not work, we may be able to fix it with a cmd command.

I understand it is somthing to do with the way vista indexes, so is there now a way to turn this indexing off so i can save my hard disk from being over used?

Answer:How To Format Hard Disk,Vista

fredvlee said:

Was the format successful or did you get errors?
I suspect you'd have to boot with the Windows CD and delete the partition. If you set a Deny permission on the drive for the User group, you won't be able to do anything from within Windows, though it might let you delete the partition. If so, you can create a new one and then format it.

You can use a Linux Live CD to recover your files if you haven't formatted the drive and have not already copied them off.

Anyways, perviously I've been running windows XP on the RAID 0 drives. I just got in my 10k drive and wanted to have my OS's on it, and the games and stuff on the RAID. I moved the RAID drives to SATA ports 2 and 3, and the new drive to SATA 1.. Windows XP still started up fine when I told the bios to boot from the raid.. however, when [trying to] install Vista 64bit, I can not get it to detect *any* drive. My old Windows XP machine crashed and I bought a new computer with Windows Vista.

However, I would like to read my old files on the old hard disk. I could not boot up the old system but I removed the hard disk and installed it in a USB cabinet and plugged it into my new vista machine.

The problem is that some files are restricted to a user defined in that old XP system and my new administrator user on vista appears unable to override this access restrictions.

Is there any way one can tell vista that "I am admin and I want full control of that hard disk anyway"?

If I could have booted up the old system I could of course have changed those permissions but as I cannot boot up that machine and it is now dismantled anyway I wonder if there is any way I can access those files?

I did try to change file permissions from vista but even though I am administrator I seem unable to change them in any way.

Depending on how your recovery disks work, they are likely going to create a default set of partitions. Once the system is installed, then you can use the built in partitioner to alter the partitions how you want.

My hard drive is ST3500320AS ATA Device.

I have 2 paritions right now. One is XP, one is Vista.

I had this message before on Windows Vista x64. [Because it was a new partition]
I used this thing called Ultimate Boot CD, and it fixed it.

I used to have x64, and wanted x32. When I installed it(x32), I accidentally made a 3rd partition using some program... it needed to restart to make the 3rd partition.

Now heres where it gets confusing for you. I restarted, and stupidly put in the Windows Vista disc in before it made the 3rd partition. So since the 3rd partition wasn't up yet, I put Ultimate over the previous vista. The computer restarted again (as part of the install) and created the 3rd partition.

After everything finished installing, I deleted the 3rd partition...

But now I get the Hard Disk error every time in Vista (Doesnt show up in XP).

Ultimate Boot Disc didn't work.... I left it on for 9 hours and it found nothing. (Or maybe I used it wrong? Last time I used it someone on the phone guided me, not this time.)

So.... how can I fix my hard drive? I don't want to back everything up :|

Is there any way to delete selected downloaded software that has remained in the (D: )drive so that I can remove it manually?

My (C: )drive has more space than my (D: )drive. Now I'm noticing that the (D: )drive is getting even smaller.
When I bought the Laptop Vista 64bit, the store techies removed the bloatware that I did not want, but I think that the bloatware is still in the D:drive I wrong?
I want to upgrade it to Wondows 7, but I fear that I won't have space:confused

Answer:Vista Hard Disk Partition Editor?

D Drive on a laptop is normally a b ackup drive for your OS and caontains the files that a Restore disc would use to put your laptop back to factory condition.

You shouldnt have stored anything or installed anything on that partition...

If you want to upgrade to Windows seven with a legitimate disc then it shouldnt be a problem.

Hope this makes things clearer..

If you are still under warrenty, call Lenovo, and explain that your hard drive crashed, and you are unable to access your recovery partition.  They should send you a free set of recovery discs.

I have just re-installed Windows Vista onto a new hard disk, and after a couple of days, i have noticed that the Windows folder is taking up nearly 20GB of space!

winsxs is taking up 9.4GB
SoftwareDistribution is 3.7GB
System32 is 3.2GB

Is there any way I can stop Vista from eating my hard disk?
I am currently using a 40GB hard disk, and am fast running out of space!
Program Files is 7.8GB, leaving not very much for anything else! (OK, 4.2 of that is Civilisation, but that is one of the major things I use!)

i recently purchased a re-conditioned M57 (6072). i'm not sure wether it's a coincidence or not but after i installed the vista sp2 update this morning i started getting error messages for the hard disk. i can't remember if it happened straight after the re-boot but it was within the same time frame.this is the message i get when i run the hard disk test in toolbox.SMART Status Test Test Started   27/08/2009 2:55:55 PM Error Message: Failure prediction threshold exceeded. 27/08/2009 2:55:56 PM Test Finished: Failed 27/08/2009 2:55:56 PMthe first time i ran it the smart tests failed but then it went ahead and performed the seek tests and scan tests and it passed all of them. but now when i run the diagnostic it fails the first smart status test and just stops there and says "your drive indicates an immenet failure. backup files and replace drive".i've run checkdisk and there were no errors or bad sectors and i've also defragged it succesfully. i suspect that there's not really a problem with that drive at all. but i have no idea what's causing windows to create error messages and why it's failing the smart tests.please help if you can. cheers. justin.

Answer:M57 hard disk error after installing vista sp2

Justin, welcome to the forum,
to be sure, download and create a bootable cd of Hitachi's Drive Fitness Test and let it test your drive. Even if you don't have an Hitachi drive it will tell you whether or not it's defective. You could also choose to try a similar software from the hard drive manufacturer, they all have similar tools.
Hope this helps

I'm running Vista Business and from the time I boot each morning till I close down, my hard disk is running for most of the time. If I do some heavy processing it stops for a while. If I disconnect from the internet (broadband) after a minute or so the HDD stops. If I reconnect after a few minutes it starts up again.

With no programs running and having quit all peer-to-peer programs and with internet connected, checking in Task Manager, I can see the only thing using CPU time is System (NT Kernel & System 116K) and this often is using up to 25% of CPU time. With internet disconnected this drops to 0% although even when connected there is almost no internet traffic.

My virus/spyware checker (Trend PC-cillin) reports nothing and to me it looks as though it is something genuine in Windows Vista that is running.

Does anyone know of anything in Vista that could cause this and if there is any setting I can change to stop it?

Newbie. 1st post.

I came to this Forum looking for help re the above.

I installed Vista Business 32 bit for the first time, all went very well. I had shied away from Vista as I wasn't prepared to pay the high price when my W2k was running Ok. However, I came across a very nice ( read naive ) German person selling rather a large amount of Vista Business 32 bit on Ebay, ( turned out to be HP UK version ). He had kindly listed 30 plus Vista all with the starting bid of 1 penny. I along with several others got into him and bought for under ?13.00. ( I got one for ?5.00 and the other for ?10 ). After this he altered the price .
The install and verification went perfect, I then installed SP2 and the mountain of Updates. Then I got the Hard disk thrash about one minute after the desktop appeared, which kept thrashing for seven minutes, at which time it ceased and from then on never made a sound.
I tramped around the forums and got no joy until I came across this forum. I had tried all the things like disabling prefetch, Superfetch and Indexing etc , but no joy.
The prob was I couldn't see into which scvhost.exe was giving me the prob.
One of the threads here gave the tip on how to see under the exe and that got the prob fixed.
The fix was to disable BOTH Superfetch and Readyboost. No more thrashing.
The tip: When in the Taskmanager, click on Show users for all . Then R/click on the svchost.exe that was showing usage. Then select Go to Services.

Hello to all,
I recently did my first computer build (woohhoo!) with the following components:

Abit KN9 SLI socket AM2 motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 4400+
2gb G Skill PC2-6400 DDR2-800 memory
Seagate 320gb SATA-II HDD
Sparkle GeForce 7300GT 512mb DDR2 video card

My question is this.....I want to partition the hard drive so that I can back up my system on one partition, and use the other to run all my applications. I started out using Partition Magic 8.0 in Windows XP Pro, but have recently upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate, and PM 8.0 is not compatible with Vista. I used Vista Disk Management to partition the drive into two basically 290gb and one 30gb, but the 30gb wasn't big enough to back up my system (I need a little over 40gb...figured I'd do 50gb). I tried to make it larger, but now Disk Management won't let me "extend" the volume of the 30gb drive...only "shrink". I messed with it several times and now have basically 30gb for the backup drive, and 20gb "unallocated". How do I get the backup drive up to 50gb, or at the very least, return the unallocated space back to my original drive? Thanks for all your help! I know you guys will come through for always do! If you need more info, please let me know what you need! Thanks again!

I had a 6.4GB Samsung hard disk that I wanted to backup, as it contained some information I needed.
Model name: SV0644A
I was using USB-PATA interface.
When the disk was making my computer stuck, I switched it off, then turned it back on, just to hear that loud screeching noise of death.
I turned it off, then turned it back on, and the noise was gone...for a second.
Then the disk failed to recognize, then the scratching noise, then disk powered itself off.
I am quite sure that there's something wrong with the head inside the disk, but it is strange.
When the scratching noise can be heard, the disk would be recognized, then it would power off. When it's not, it would just refuse to work.
Since I couldn't find user manual for this hard disk, I need your help.

Answer:Loud scratching noise from disk, then disk fails to read

That does not sound good at all. Have you run windows check disk? If it is your disk it will let you know. Other than that you might have some viruses on there.

Have a new Double Power 8.1 Tablet that I've upgraded to Win 10. Now I've got it set up just right, I'm attempting to create a Rescue Disk. Purchased a 16gb micro-usb drive which is successfully recognized. Ran 'Create Rescue Disk' from Windows search and checked 'copy system files' b4 proceeding. Process fails after about 200mb copied to disk.

USB drive was formatted MSDOS32, reformatted as NTFS and retried. Got same "Create Rescue Disk has encountered an error and cannot continue" error.

Windows 10 has been made so 'user-friendly' that it gives you no useful information when it has an error. How can you know what size hammer to use as a workaround? If the process would tell you what it doesn't like, you could figure out what to do to make it happy.

Anybody experienced with 'Create Rescue Disk' on Win10?

Hi ,  Actually i am a novoice user of laptops and that is the reason why i have landed up here.It happened this way.. i had a windows vista installed in my laptop previsoly. i just wanted to install xp so that i could use both xp and vista .i thought the options would be the same way in which we install windows xp and windows 98. so before installing xp , i just went in disk management in vista and made some partioin where i can install xp. then i restarted the laptop with the bootable xp my horror i couldnt see any of those partitions which i created . and there was only a single large partion. so i decided to quit and aborted the installation process. but after restarting , i could see that the laptop couldnt boot. thinking that something seriously has gone wrong,i just rebooted the laptop with the xp cd and deleted the only partitioin which i could see and installed the xp by formtting the partion and creating new ones. and now i could see only xp. later on i came to know that the vista could have been retrieved by using the novo button which i didnt know previously. i would like to know whether i can still retrieve that vista version again ?? i also donno whether i have deleted the recovery partion or not but someone told me that since the recovery partion is not visible to us , it might not have been deleted it true???

HP Pavillion DV7 with Vista. Got an imminent hard disk error (no back up and no Vista Recovery disks) probably from power outages. Ran chkdsk (yes, I should have backed up or cloned first) it was fixing errors and in stage 4 when the power went out. Now it will not boot, gives SMART error 1720.

I tried to make a boot disk with my old XP computer online, using Imgbrn and tried burning WD's hard disk rescue and UBCD411. My laptop will not boot off of any of them, even with the Bios changed to boot off CD (yes I saved Bios correctly). It actually won't read the CD/DVD even though I input it into the bios. It just keeps saying insert boot disc and hit any key.

The hard disk is partitioned into C and D and D is the recovery. Any way to access the hard disk or get this to boot?? Thanks in advance!!

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 720 with Windows Vista Ultimate. The system has 4GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Extreme processor. I've been very unsuccessfully attempting to troubleshoot a critical error with the Dell XPS support team. At random times, the system freezes, crashes and restarts itself. Upon re-boot, Windows indicates that the system has recovered from an unexpected error. Clicking on "find a resolution", Windows says it was caused by a "Hard Disk Drive Error" I have included a screenshot of the detals below.

I have tried several things ranging from system restores, basic hard drive diagnostics, 32-Bit hard drive diagnostic in the Dell startup menu, removing startup programs, Dell support center diagnostic system scans, Windows system health scan & reports, etc. All tests have indicated that the hard drive is operating well with no errors. My event log shows every instance of the bluescreen event, but offers no specific details - just that the shutdown was unexpected. I have refreshed my imaging file recently and have not had sufficient time to monitor the results.

It was my intention to attach my MiniDump files to this post, but Windows indicates that I do not have permission to do so and to request rights from an administrator. I am the computer administrator and sole user of the machine. If anyone can shed some light on how I can get around that, I will post the files. It has become obvious that Dell will be no help to me. Hey! I'm trying to install Win7 on my laptop (Gateway MT6841) I did the installation full through, 32bit all good. Once I booted it the gateway recovery partition came up saying I needed to load some hard disk drivers. However I can't find anything that looks like hard disk drivers for this laptop. I actually couldn't find any 7 drivers. I've experienced that vista drivers will work though. I just need to know where to get drivers for this! All I could on the gateway support site was network, modem, video sound, media reader and touchpad drivers.

Thanks for the help.

Answer:Vista to 7 Hard disk driver laptop issue

Hi -

You don't need any drivers at all. The Gateway recovery partition is popping up because it does not recognize the Windows 7 OS.

Get rid of the recovery partition - wipe the entire hard drive with Killdisk, then re-install Windows 7.

KillDisk -

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -

My Vista Operating System Hard Disk Just crashed. It was running Vista Home Premium. My Computer is an HP 8170in media centre PC.

I have managed to salvage most data off it from the other partitions as well as the C:\ except the my documents which has all my user files on them. I have already tried using an XP computer to get into the hard disk but it doesnt allow me to change the securities from there. Have tried changing security ownership by using articles from the forum by goin on the security tab in XP but its not allowing me to change this for the documents and settings. Is it located elsewhere by any chance? Am i changing the wrong folder? At the minute it just shows the folder grayed out with no access to it... you do not have permission message and its disk size shown is 0mb. Assuming this is becuase of a security issue.

I also bought a new hard disk and used the hp restore disks to re add windows vista on that hard disk. Now on that system i cannot access my old hard disk and i get a blue screen. If i attempt to only boot from my old hard disk i get a 0x0000007b (0x78d2524 oxc0000034 ox00000000 0x00000000) error

Please help. Me desperate now.

Answer:Recover my documents from a crashed vista OS hard disk

Documents & Settings is not a folder but a junction point pointing to the users folder.
It is the same for the My documents icon.
So from the other PC, your documents are somewhere else if you moved the location or in c:\users\yourusername\
There once you discovered the path of your files/folders, you can take ownership and transfer your files.
Next time as soon as you have installed your OS, move the location of your "Documents" folder in another partition.

I'm trying to replace my hard disk of my computer that has Windows Vista OEM. I have the recovery CD's with me. If i buy a new hard drive, and install it in to the computer, will i be able to install OEM version of Windows Vista i had in computer using the recovery CDs?

Answer:Replace the hard disk of a computer that has OEM Windows Vista

You should be able to do that, if the disks work. Usually they do, sometimes they don't.

You won't end up with an OEM version of Windows. You'll end up with an OEM version of Windows plus whatever other stuff was on the PC when you bought it---whether you want that other stuff or not.

Hi all. I am switching my problem to a new thread as the last thread died out...

I have a 1 year old pc that I had built. Its got an evga 780i FTW mobo, and 2 seagate barracuda hard disks. I had them in Raid 1 and the main disk failed. After hours of trying, the second disk, the backup would not boot into windows. All seemed as if the os on the backup was corrupted somehow. (ain't raid great)
Now I have installed the new replacement drive, and left the backup out. I installed a fresh version of Vista, and all the drivers, and have a working pc now.
What I need to do is install the backup drove to get some data off it. Pictures of the kids etc...
I have installed the drive into its original backup position. Its shows up in the bios no problem.
In Vista however, I still only have a single C drive. Under disk management, it shows my new drive as healthy (system boot, page file, etc....)
The backup shows as unallocated. I have tried and tried, but I cannot read any info on this drive.
Can anyone shed some light here. I would very much appreciate it.

Answer:Old vista hard disk unreadable in windows....need to get data off it.

If the BIOS is detecting the disk correctly then you may be able to recover the data with Recover My Files. The software is not free, but you can download a free Trial version and test it on some files to see if it can recover the files.

You will find it at this URL

I have a laptop with processor 1.7ghz and 512DDR2 RAM which suitable to install vista. I heard many people said that 512 RAM just only eonugh store vista services.. means that no more available memory to store other third party software services that installed...

I know I can increase my page file but I don want to do that because it will slow down performance.

Is possible install VISTA inside external hard disk? Because I don want install vista inside fixed disk which required reformat disk if vista not suitable for my laptop. Very time consuming to uninstall OS on fixed disk....(Haha I just want to try VISTA only)

Here's my question...

1. If boot from windows Vista DVD, will it able to detect my external hard disk(Is required to change bios settings?)

2. Now if having two OS which XP inside fixed disk and Vista inside external hard disk, How I gonna choose which OS I want to login at the startup?

Answer:Possible? install Windows Vista inside external hard disk?

1. That depends on if your bios is capable of booting from a USB device. Read the manufacturer's instructions to see if this is possible.

2. You are probably going to have to choose one or the other by changing the settings in your bios to point one way or another. So each time you reboot, you are going to have to go into your bios and select the bootable device.

Some other observations: I think that the performance that you are going to get is going to be substandard... you already don't have enough memory and the fact that you will be running the OS from the external drive, well, that should slow it down quite a bit as well.

Be sure that if you do go through with this that you don't accidentally wipe out your fixed disk... I have seen this happen a lot with people "trying" Vista.
