Rescue and recovery set to backup to external drive, but local drive backups not deleted

Question: Rescue and recovery set to backup to external drive, but local drive backups not deleted

Hi, I had memory issues, as have many on these boards. Following the advice I first updated my lenovo system and then pointed the rescue and recovery to an external hard drive and saved a new base backup. At some point I was asked if I wanted the existing backups deleted and I said yes, however, I don't think they can have been deleted as their has been no increase in memory available. I also ran the SpaceMonger program recommended on the boards and it was unable to scan 60% of the hard drive. So, can you please let me know how to get to, and delete the original backups? thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a R61 laptop with 140 GB running Windows Vista. It's about 18 months old. Windows explorer says 82GB of 140GB is used. When I add up each folder I get only 45GB of space used. All I really have on this computer is 26gig music & some holiday photos. I have had this problem since I first got the computer. I have looked through threads here who suggested that backups may be the issue, and a program called Rescue and Recovery was the problem. However, when I open that program it says that there are no backups avaliable. However, that program definitely tries to run on my computer every Wednesday as I get a popup telling me my computer was turned off and do I want to run it (I say no). The SW Tools folder is only 2GB. On windows explorer when I right click I see that there are something called "system recovery points" of which there are many. However, I can't figure out what these are, where the data is stored, or how I would delete it. Please help me as this is very frustrating as I have about 40GB of music I would like to move across but at present that would use a lot of my remaining space.

I am planning on installing Paragon - Drive Backup Professional on my T61 PC (Win XP) which currently has Rescue and Recovery 4.0 on it. .... Now, If during the Paragon install I choose to have Paragon install its "Backup Capsule" which it installs as a hidden partition and allows access to it via pressing the F11 Key: 1.   Will i have any issues if I leave Rescue and Recovery on my PC which also makes use of a hidden partition which is accessable by pressing the Blue Thinkvantage Key ? ....So, Will there by any issues ?  P.S.  I think that when Paragon installs the "Backup Capsule" that it modifies the MBR on the hard drive.  2.   How have others installed the Paragon Drive Backup Professional program on their Thinkpads which also have Rescue and Recovery on them ??? ...  If yes, did you  install Paragon with or without the "Backup Capsule" and left RnR on the Thinkpad PC  ?  3.   Or, have you Un-Installed rescue and recovery first and then installed  "Paragon Drive Backup Professional" ?...  If yes, did you  install Paragon with or without the "Backup Capsule" ?

Can anyone recommend the best external hard drive to use for Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery?  I've been doing some research and I'm concerned about the Maxtor "one touch" software.  If I choose to purchase a Maxtor external hard drive should I go in and delete any software on the drive before I back up from Rescue and Recovery? I have been having a lot of problems with Rescue and Recovery -- it's difficult to delete past backups, and I get hangups.  But eventually it usually backs up.  I have read reviews for the Maxtor one touch software and it sounds like it doesn't work well for restoring an entire system (problems with certain files, such as hidden files, etc.).  But maybe that's not true?  Also, do you recommend that I delete all previous backups before running a Rescue and Recovery backup?  If not, if I ever had to restore from it, would it automatically use the most current backup? Thanks in advance for any advice!  I'm a novice, but I want to make sure that everything is backed up properly.

Hi...I am a 'newby' to this system..I accidentally took away my 1st Backup on Rescue&Recovery.  When I go to start another backup, it starts but then stops saying there is not enough free space for it to work.  The Lenovo Recovery Disk shows 9.76 GB total with 3.25 free.  On one screen during my attempts to backup it said I might need as much as 55GB for the backup....Can you please tell me how to correctly do this backup(provide enough disk space, etc), since there is none present on this new computer(13") and no internal disk drive to use....feels very VULNERABLE !! I greatly appreciate your help,Rob

Answer:deleted 1st backup on Rescue & Recovery; won't backup new one...

Other alternative is to use a External Hard Disk... So far that's what i've been doing.

Hi All,Note that I was a registered Lenovo user already when this story started. It started with a Rescue & Recovery issue. When it is asked to copy a backup to USB drive, it has deleted/overwritten another backup on the USB drive. It happened to be my Vista Business. No warning or anything. I would like to have it back.So I visited the Lenovo site and tried to troubleshoot. There was no useful information to be found or it was not easily accessible. Then I tried to submit a request. It warned me for the necessity of a warranty status check. It offers the auto-detect and the manual status check. None of these worked. The auto-detect was possibly because I use XP. However, the suggested recipe for XP did not work either: I was not offered to install any ActiveX. The manual one gave a ?our apologies. No warranty information.?Anyway, I trust in my warranty, since I bought it only a month ago, so I go on with the ?submit a request.? After selecting EMEA, I got a site that is applicable to US only.Afterwards, I clicked ?My account? and got ?our apologies? the requested page cannot be found. Kept on trying, so I went to the forum, and wanted to login. Since I have not received any password, I filled in my registered e-mail address. It said it was not registered. Finally, I created a new account and I could post this message. The original issue is in my main interest, while I would not mind if the rest was also picked up.lenovouser1Thinkpad SL-300, XP downgr... Hi, After I deleted the Recue and Recovery backup files, every time after I play the Age of Empire 3 game online, the latency goes up very high, and latency is fine before the game. And I did the test on speakeasy.net, it's shown that my ping is over 2000ms, I checked with my ISP, who's time warner cable, they told me my modem connection is fine.  Anyone know what's going on? My usb opticle drive went south and I hardly ever use it so I figured this out and thought it might help someone else. First you need a 1GB SD card or thumb drive and a usb hard drive.Next go into your bios setup and move all usb and card slots to the top of the boot order under "Boot" menu.Next google and download the free Macrium Refex Backup software.Next follow these instructions.  http://www.macrium.com/blog/2008/09/23/HowToCreateABootableLinuxUSBStick.aspxComplete process with backup takes about half an hour and no high tech knowledge required. It works great and rescue SD boots right up from the SD card slot on the front. Make your Macrium image backups on a usb hard drive.  This can be moved to a new hard drive if the old one fails and it will have an exact image of the original.

i try to backup my laptop data using system image recovery.. In the process, the system told me that 'the backup could take up to 16 GB of disc space.' So, i just create another partition (17 GB) on my external hard disc as a backup location. The process went smoothly. But unfortunately, all my external hard disc partition has been deleted and there is only one partition (RECOVERY 31.9GB ) that include recovery data is created.. Is it any way that i can apply to get back my deleted partition?

Answer:System image recovery has deleted my external hard drive partition

Hi Fuadansari

Can you please tell us the manufacturer and the model of the hard drive that was overwritten.

I've done that process so I think that I understand what happened. Is it an Acer laptop?

The most important thing at this point is that you DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING TO THE AFFECTED DRIVE. That means do not format it or do anything that may alter the data that is currently on it.

Okay, here is a pic of my hard disks.

My backups go into my Recovery Drive, and it is nearly full. I repeatedly uninstall prgrams that I don't need, and delete old backups. Why is it still full? How do I make more space? My OS drive is so BIG, but I have next to nothing in it! Are backups supposed to be going into C drive?

Answer:Recovery Drive almost full: Should backups be in D drive or in the C drive?

Not to worry. The recovery is probalby just restore points. As you need more space the oldest point is deleted and a new one made. If you want to make space. Turn off the System Restore, deleting all points. Then make a new point, you will need it in case of problems.

Do I have to purchase the recovery media from Lenovo or is there a download link out here on the Lenovo site?

Answer:Windows 8 Pro Rescue and recovery on a new hard drive(old drive died)

Hopefully, you've already burned a set of DVDs from the recovery partition. Recovery media is not downloadable. If your old HDD died, and you did not burn the DVDs beforehand, you'll have to contact customer support with your model number and serial number to order a set.

I have Microsoft XP. Today, I made a backup of Word on a floppy (I know these are antiques) and a backup of Word on a CD.  I went into the A Drive and deleted two files that were password protected (even though it did not ask me for the password).  Then, I was stupid enough to empty the Recycle Bin.  When I went  into the Backup CD, those two files were gone and they were also missing from the list of Word Documents on the hard drive.  I sure did not know if I deleted them from the floppy, they would also be deleted from the other drives.  These were two important files and I need them.  HELP!!! Anyone out there who can help me recover them?

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

Answer:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

Good morning! Installed a new hard drive on my X31. I used a purchased set of official restore media to do a clean install of Windows XP with the HPA Predesktop Area in place. Two weeks later all of my Windows and ThinkPad updates are complete and I am ready for a clean backup. I installed Rescue and Recovery 4.23 and after a false start, I successfully made a backup to a USB Hard Drive that will boot into ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery. The Windows software seems to be fully functional. On normal bootup, however, if I use F11 or the Access IBM button, I am taken to the original Predesktop HPA interface -- so the partition is really there. The Factory Restore appears to now be functioning if I ever wanted to use it. My problem (or questions) relates to the "Restore Your Backups" icon. When I select it, I get the message: "IBM Rapid Restore PC is not installed. Press the enter key to reboot to Windows and install IBM Rapid Restore PC." Therefore, that portion of the HPA is not accessible. And, therefore, other than a factory restore, there is no way to run restore from the HPA. So, here are my questions: 1. Is there anyway to put the Rescue and Recovery 4 predesktop area in this HPA?2. If so, would it wipe out the Factory Restore option?3. Should I have made at least one backup with "IBM Rapid Restore PC" before the "Rescue and Recovery 4" installer removed it?4. Is there any space on the HPA I can recover?5. Is there a tool or me... Read more

Answer:Rescue and Recovery 4 and X31 HPA Restore Your Backups

Is the version of R&R on HPA the same as the one installed under Windows? If you used original restore disks for X31, it is likely that R&R on HPA is an older version, there may be some incompatibility.

Backup space

I am running Windows10
I store my back ups and other folders on an external drive which has a capacity of 465GB of which at the present moment is free space.of 93GB . The sytem will not let me do a backup now as it says that a free space capacityof 190+GB is needed. On checking 'Back up and restore' on Control panel the breakdown of the drive is shown as undernoted.
Data file back up - 47.29GB
System image 199.91GB
Other files 125.71GB
Free Space 92.82GB
TOTAL SIZE 465.73GB
I am looking to make space for a back up on the drive and

On checking the Properties of all the folders contained in the external drive
Photos takes up 40GB
Microsoft Flight sim 9 " " 3GB
" " sim X " " 9GB
All the rest of the folders
including those saying 'empty'
with properties of nil ------------ Less than 1GB
Total of Properties folders' = 50GB.
Bearing in mind that the total 'properties' GBs used on my main computer Drive 'C' is 133GB out of a total capacity of 1000GB (With much more work on it) I cannot understan) why there is so little space left on my external drive. I suspect that some of the previous backups have somehow been duplicated If that is a possibility where do I go to find these backup and how do I remove the duplicates.
Hope you can understand what I am on about Regards

Answer:Backups on my external drive

Quote:

Data files to back up - 47.29GB
System image 199.91GB
Other files 125.71GB

This equals 372.91GB of files to backup. The Current Used space on the external drive 319.91GB. with free space of only 145GB. You do not have enough free space. You need an additional 227.91GB of Space to backup the current backup. Unless you remove the System Image file, then you will have 28GB left of free space after the backup.

Hi, I have problem deleting old backups with Rescue and Recovery - always when I try to delete them, it seems working, but it's not, it never finishes... I tried to delete just one of all backups, only the last or only the oldest one or all of them together, but with no effect. I have 6 backups of about 45GB together. And by the way R&R doesn't work well at all - also when I click on Optimize backup storage space, it doesn't work... Possibly it is normal that when deleting old backups, computer seems freezing and it takes very long time, but I'm not sure if it ever ends. I have R61 with WinXP Pro SP3, R&R last version 4.21.0016. Is there any solution? Thanks a lot!V.K.

I've got an issue with the rescue and recovery on my laptop. I want to delete old backups and when I get my automated RnR pop up on a friday afternoon instead of doing a backup I click on the link that says "you can modify this schedule by launching RnR here". From that I get a list of all the old backups made on my laptop and the option to delete any one of them. I click on the delete button next to an old backup that's obviosuly taking up valuable HD space and a little window pops up telling me "Please wait while the backups are deleted" and then the little hour glass spins round and round for hours on end. I clicked this at 5pm this evening and it is now 11pm and it's still there. Don't think it's deleting anything and has just timed out. It's done this every time I try. Is there a way to configure the RnR so that I can specify that I want the backup to go onto my external hardrive?Where are these backups stored on my laptop so that I can go in and delete them manually as doing them vis RnR is definitely not working, Thanks

I initially tried to zip this backup, this was successful, but created an additional zip copy using more space. I moved the zip copy to the external drive & tried to delete the original backup. I could not delete the original. I'd rather not delete it at all, just move it, but I can't figure out how to do this without creating a copy.TIAMitsme

Can you right-click drag it to the external drive? When you right-click drag, you are given the option to "Move" rather than just copy.

Hi all,
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and wanted to change it from FAT32 to NTFS. I was following instructions given on WDs website, however the directions weren't entirely clear (of course only noticed after the fact). I right clicked on My Computer, clicked manage and used Disk Manager. The instructions said to find the drive, right click on it and click delete partition. It didn't mention however, to do that with bottom part of the screen and not the top. So, I think I just deleted the logical drive.

It shows up on the device manager and the "Safely Remove Hardware" window, but the drive letter no longer shows up under My Computer.

Is there a way to fix this? Or did I just buy a $120 paper weight?

Thanks,

PaveFE

I've had my T61, running Vista, for about 6 months.  A few weeks ago, I noticed that my 105GB hard drive was filling up at a surprisingly rapid rate.  I have several applications installed, but most definitely not enough to fill that amount of space.  I did some online research, and then, with the help of WinDirStat, cleaned out some junk, ran Disk Clean for good measure, limited my shadow copy space with vssadmin, and tossed some old shadow copies.  I then looked (for the first time) at Rescue and Recovery.  I noticed that all backups except the first were made in recent days.  That was odd, since Rescue and Recovery was set to make a backup only once a month, not several times a day.  I deleted all but the first backup copy, and gained an immense amount of disk space back.  A day later,  I checked Rescue and Recovery again, and noticed that a bunch of extra backups had been made, about three a day.  My husband mentioned that the Downadup/Kido worm resets restore points, so I downloaded the Windows patch.  Unfortunately, I find that Rescue and Recovery is still making daily backups.  Last time I checked, I had six, although the limit is set to five.  I'm not sure what's going on here.  I'm a little skeptical that I've picked up a virus.  My Norton is up-to-date, Windows automatic updates should have picked up that virus patch on its own long ago, I don't open unfamiliar windows, and I u... So, this may seem like a simple question to some, but I can not find a conclusive answer yet. I have Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery 4.52 - Windows 7 (64 bit) for my Lenovo T540.  Will Rescue and Recovery 4.52 create a full image backup such that if in the event my hard drive crashes, I can reinstall the entire operating system, programs, etc at one time, without having to reinstall individual software programs? I just don't want to install Rescue and Recovery 4.52 because it is a large program, without it being able to do a full image backup. Thanks

Answer:Rescue and Recovery 4.52 - Makes Full Image Backups?

In my personal opinion, Rescue and Recovery is obselete.  For Win7 and later, my advice is to use Windows built-in backup and restore.  You can create both a complete system image (what you are asking about), and also backup individual files/folders in your libraries.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/backup-and-restore

Rescue and Recovery was great for XP and earlier OS when there wasn't any built-in backup and restore functions.  But for Win7 and later, my advice is to use the OS built-in feature.  Hope this helps.

Hi,I have been using an Iomega eGO external USB drive for backups.I have been able to list and remove backups (when required) when in Windows 7 and running Rescue & Recovery, but I am unable to get a list of backups when booting from a Recovery DVD into Rescue & Recovery. Basically I am replacing the unencrypted hard drive with an SSD that supports encryption. The aim was to use a full backup made immediately prior to removing the HDD to restore the full system. When booting from the recovery DVD, the Rescue & Recovery utility doesn't list any backups, even when the tick box for listing backups for other systems is checked. It makes no difference whether selecting ALL locations or External USB Drive. Any ideas? Backups aren't much good if you can't retrieve them.If my old disk had failed then I'd be in a worse state than this. I can't say that I'm impressed.

Answer:Rescue & Recovery lists no backups on Iomega USB eGO disk

Hello and welcome,

Has R&R been updated since you made your bootable DVD?  It's possible there's a version mismatch between your backups and your R&R DVD.

You might try burning a new rescue CD - or whatever it's called on your machine, "bootable media" maybe.  That may be able to find your backups.

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore. Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space. Please help, thanks.

Answer:t43: Recovery Discs are corrupt and Rescue and Recovery won't restore from the Hard Drive?

I am doing a fresh install in the following rather than cloning because the system has not been reinstalled for 4yrs.  From an external usb CD drive (internal drive removed) I installed the recovery disks onto a 160GB Samsung HM160HC PATA drive with no problem .  Then clicked the restart button.  My T42 booted right back into the opening page of the Rescue and Recovery routine.  On restarting again I used F12 to get the list of drives and selected the Samsung HDD.  This did not help.  Have repeated startup numerous times.  The computer could not be looking at any other drive because the Samsung is the only one connected.  I am tempted to download Lenovo's available BIOS update while logged-in with the old 30GB drive regardless of the fact that my  Embedded Controller Program is ver 3.04 and supposed to be suitable for the 160GB drive upgrade.  If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

Answer:T42 HDD upgrade- Recovery disks install but hard drive only boots to Rescue and Recovery routine.

Welcome to the forum!

Wipe the hard drive clean.

Boot from the first (Rescue & Recovery CD) and follow the prompts. You'll have 7 more CDs to go through (5 for the earlier version).

Once the process is complete, the machine will instruct you to remove the final CD and reboot. At that point, you should be able to boot from the hard drive with no interaction required.

Good luck.

HelloI keep my files on my external hard drive. I want to backup such files to another external drive. Can you suggest me a backup/sync solution please?Incremental and automated backup would be nice.I use Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OS.I prefer simple to use, reliable software. Open source is a plus.Thank you.

Answer:Can you suggest me a backup solution (external drive to external drive)?

I'd use a simple batch file for the Microsoft OS systems, but the Mac system wont like a batch file. I am not sure of any that run on both platforms so your likely looking for 2 different ways to do this.As far as automated, you could have both external drives attached to the system and either have a scheduled task do this or add it to the startup folder so that when the system boots it syncs both drives. Here is one that I have used that is a simple batch file between XP and 7 systems:With my external drives of same capacity and at letters F: and G: , I perform an xcopy from one to the other, and then the other back to the first in case anything was added to the other and not the first.xcopy f:\*.* g:\*.* /s/d/yxcopy g:\*.* f:\*.* /s/d/yThis works for XP and 7 systems, but haven't tested it with 8 or 8.1 yet.Windows 7 introduced Robocopy and so I would perform the same routine but with Robocopy instead which would work with 7 and 8 or 7 and 8.1. If windows 8 or 8.1 has legacy support for xcopy then the method above will work, otherwise it will error out and you will have to make a batch file with robocopy vs xcopy, and robocopy has different switches than the /s/d/y of xcopy. The amount of time it takes to sync up all depends on how much data needs to copy from one to the other. If the drives are almost completely a match with exeception to some added data, then it would be completed pretty quickly, however if your syncing up one drive to the other and the other is f... After I did a clean install of Win10 about a year ago, I created a USB Recovery Drive. I also have a Norton Security Recovery Drive and I?ve created USB Bootable PE Rescue Disk by Kyhi. I also use Acronis to create regular full disk images and I have a USB Bootable Acronis Rescue Drive.

With the USB Recovery Drive and the USB Bootable PE Rescue Disk by Kyhi, do I still need to keep the Recovery Partition that Win10 created when I did the original install? Are the files in that partition used by the system to create the USB Recovery Drive?

Also out of curiosity I executed the ?reagentc/info? command and I see that the Windows RE status is disabled. Did creating the USB Recovery Drive do that or is something else going on? If I keep the recovery partition then do I need to re-enable it and if so how do I do that?

Answer:Recovery Drive vs Recovery Partition vs PE Rescue Disk, confused.

Hi, you don't need the manufacturer's recovery partition unless you planned to restore the PC to as bought e.g. to sell it on.
You could create a disk image of it and save it on an external disk, then delete it from your PC.

Windows RE: Suggests you have a corrupt or missing partition - System Reserved. Note that Disk Management does not show this 16Mb partition. You need a 3rd party partition manager to see it.

See this (lots of technical detail):
Just a moment...

And do a couple of checks to see if it really is missing.

I'm going to get an external hard drive for backups and can't decide on a USB 3 or eSATA interface. eSATA is faster but my computer doesn't have a port so I'd need to buy an adapter. Do adapters slow the transfer down? Is it that big of a difference between USB 3 and eSATA or would my money be spent better on something else e.g. disk rpm?

Heck, I just use a USB device and it performs very well - - it's also portable for a recovery elsewhere if needed.

Sure, that can be done. You need to go to this site Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD. and create a bootable CD which you can make partitions of any size on your external drive. It is free.

I can access it. what should I do in order to get access to the local and external drives in normal mode

thanks in advance

Hello ahmadysf!

Has anything happened before this problem? Un update, power surge, reformatting etc.?
Have you tried:
- checking all cables (when PC is powered off), reseating them, making sure they are working and correctly connected
- going into BIOS and checking if the drives show up, their settings and mode, they'd need to be in AHCI mode

Also, has this problem happened after installing something?
If so, go into safe mode, uninstall it, use a software to clean the registry from the entries associated with the certain software(s) and then boot normally.

Hope any of this helps!

My pc has Vista Business. Don't know if this is a Vista problem or a hardware problem: using the Backup
and Restore Center, I backed up my files (docs, etc.) and also did a complete computer backup to my new 250GB external hard drive on Oct 31. I then scheduled a file backup only for every Saturday thereafter. I then turned off the drive.

On Saturday Nov 3, I turned the drive on just before the time for the backup, and shortly the scheduled backup tried to begin, but the drive K:\ could not be found and thus the backup failed. I then turned the drive off, rebooted the pc, then manually started the file backup from the Backup Center. It worked this time. So I tried the complete backup again just to see if that would also work, but once again the pc could not find the drive.

The drive came with a backup utility (Memeo AutoBackup) that I chose not to install because Vista has a good backup utility. Does anyone out there have any suggestions or observations on what is happening here? Mike

Hi,Bit of background first, my old harddrive , which was split into  C and D ,approx. 500 gig each, went Kaput, had it replaced with an SSD(at my request because I heard they don't overheat and are faster) by an experienced computer technician, and no longer  having to deal with split drives suited me fine.I only  have half the storage space now, about 500Gg in comparison to 1,000 Gg,  but cost was a factor at the time, SSD's being so expensive.Very happy with the new SSD, speed etc. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit , SP1. My backups were all stored on a Goflex external harddrive, which  the technician accidentally  dropped on the floor, he then replaced this with an external drive with an on/off switch. (Pleased about the on/off switch, the other didn't have one, very upset about the dropping my other one). All working fine, doing my backups to my new external drive  he gave me, using  my Acronis True Image software 2015 version, that I had always used.My old external  drive was set up to drive E, and all my previous backups in Acronis show drive E, so perhaps this is why the technician set this new one up to Drive F, not sure. And maybe this is why I got the error message below? Well, in my infinite wisdom (which with computer technology isn't great I must admit) I suddenly decided I wanted to backup to an external drive with the letter E,(E for External seemed so much mor... I purchased a Western Digital 250gb external hard drive (My Passport Essential I think) a few years back with the idea that I would use it as a backup to my main computer and/or an alternative hard drive storage for my music. But I have been sadly deceived and luckily I have only used it as a sync/temporary access drive when I needed to print stuff away from home.

Well the time has come to upgrade to a new computer (with more space and speed etc than current) and I have been trying to find ways to transfer my existing files across.

In my search, I have stumbled across many forums/websites that advise the WD external hdd and the preinstalled software (WD Sync/Dmailer Sync whichever it is now) is not suitable as a backup drive and that if the computer is erased and at any point resync'ed, the data on the external hdd will be deleted. Also many people advise they have lost files as a result of computer crashes etc and cannot retrieve the files from either their WD hdd or their computer. All of which has prompted me to start this thread.

Can anyone please tell me, is there a way to...
1. Transfer my files to my new computer using the WD external hdd? NB. Not as important as I have alternative methods/may start another thread.

2. Turn the WD hdd into a back up drive without purchasing the Dmailer Backup software? (NB. I am not opposed to buying new software but I feel I have been "done" by a highstreet (actually retail park) computer store and I don't par... Read more

Hi,

When I switched my Laptop on yesterday the nice Seagate Icon for my external backup hard drive had vanished but has been replaced by a dull looking generic Windows page icon ? This external backup drive is the K:\ drive on my system.

I surfed google yesterday trying to find some advice on how to restore what was a very attractive Icon ? . . but have been struggling to find any advice I could understand or thought I'd be able to follow ?

On a positive note, I have located the exact file for the disappeared icon on my laptop (its called SeagatePortable.ico) and I have copied it to my desktop temporarily, but, I have no idea how to re-apply this icon to my K:\ drive ?

Whilst surfing, I discovered a simple freeware program called "Drive Icon Changer" so I downloaded this program and tried to use it. It is very easy to use, but, try as I might, I cannot get this programme to interact with my K;\ drive ? . . so I've given up and uninstalled that programme, as, in this instance at least, it clearly does not do what it is supposed to be able to do.

I also saw some advice about going to a DOS prompt (I do not understand what this means or how to do it?) and deleting or editing something called the autorun.inf file - I suspect this type of action would be well beyond my understanding and I'd probably do more harm than good if I attempted to edit this sort of system file and got it wrong !

I've also done a system restore - to a back up point of a couple of days ... Read more

Answer:How do I restore the Seagate Drive Icon for my External Backup Drive?

Also just spotted an obsolete thread on this site where someone suggested:-

"Un-install the driver while the external drive is connected and then rebooted and let windows reinstall - everything should go back to normal when Windows re-discovered the drive".

I don't know if this might cure my problem ? . . but unfortunately I do not know how to uninstall a driver ?

Normally it would be pretty simple but I’ve got a bit of a twist this time…

The HD in question is a couple year old Lacie 500GB Big Disk drive… now, with it being an older external, Lacie didn’t put 1 500GB inside, they used 2 250GB and ‘bridged’ them using a little circuit which also contained the connection for the USB…

Now, the issue I have with the drive isn’t that the drives themselves are corrupted, rather I have two healthy 250GB hard drives… the issue is that the small device inside the case that ‘bridges’ the two drives and acts as a USB connector has gone kaput meaning the devices have lost their relationship to each other… from my attempts so far it appears that both drives are mapped together and that data is spread across the two drives meaning it’s a little more complex than putting each drive into a new enclosure… I’ve tried connecting the individual drives internally to my desktop PC as per the typical HD but having no success regardless of whether I connect the one drive or hook the two up to the same IDE port… either the drive is not recognised or it is displayed in disk manager as a ‘dynamic’ (I think) drive that is unsuitable for use and needs formatting – exactly what I don’t want to do given the 500GB of data that’s on there…

Any suggestions so that I can get the data off these drives and onto another external???

Many thanks.

I have had two Maxtor external hard drives fail on my wife's PC. Each one has only lasted 18 months or less. Even though the backup process was easy and automatic I am considering going with a Flash USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Thumb-type Drive to manually backup important files and images. Is there anything wrong with this method of backup that I'm unaware of?

My wife's PC has genealogy software with lots of files and associated images, etc. (for over 40,000 people), which is about 10GB in size. It is this information that needs to be backed-up whenever additions/changes are made.

I am thinking about replacing the [most recently] expired Maxtor external hard drive with either a 16GB or 32GB Flash USB 2.0 Hi-Speed Thumb-type Drive. Is this a reasonable method for backup? Which GB size would you recommend? Brand?

Thanks!

Hello all. This is puzzling me, my windows backup is also backing up one of my external drives (I have 4) as well as my 'C' drive (yes, the one I do want to back up). I am looking all over trying to find where I can stop this. I am backing up to an external drive, and no, its not the same drive that's being backed up. Here is my set-up... Primary Drive "C", external drive "F", external drive "G", external drive "H", external drive "I". The "F" drive is one of my external drives. As you can see in the screen shot, drive C and F are being backed up.
Now, I want to only back up my "C" drive to the "I" drive and have that set to do once per week. That is what I have it set for. I am allowing Windows to choose the files for me. Does someone know why this is happening and how to stop it? Thanks to all for your help.

Answer:Windows Backup is backing up an external drive as well as my C drive

Windows Backup works in mysterious ways.

That's one of the reason many avoid it. It's not intuitive or easily understood.

It has it's own idea of what needs to be backed up.

Hello- I have managed to use Rescue and Recovery to backup by Carbon X1 to a network drive.  I then created a rescue USB drive to run the restore, if needed. However, I realized a flaw in this approach: when booting to the rescue USB drive, my external USB 3.0 network adapter never activates, meaning I cannot see my backup set on the network drive! I guess this means that for PCs without built-in Network Adapters, this approach cannot work and I will just need to utilize a larger, external USB drive for backup. Any other suggestions? Thank you, Marc

Hi all,

I know this is a topic that generates questions all the time, but I haven't yet found a solution that works from all the searching I've done. My external hard drive (1TB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) is, as far as I can tell, corrupted in some manner. I don't remember exactly the circumstances involved--from when it was fine to when it was no longer recognized--but suffice it to say that Windows was involved (never had a drive become unreadable under OS X or Linux, this is the second time while using Windows that it's happened).

I've attached some relevant screenshots. When I connect the drive, it doesnt' appear in Explorer. It also doesn't appear when I connect in Ubuntu (I currently dual boot, Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04). However, when I look it up in Device Manager, sometimes it appears, sometimes it doesn't. When it does appear, it is listed as "Disk Drive". I've tried a number of things, but nothing seems to get it working.

Oh, also, when I turn on the external hard drive, even if it is not plugged into the USB port, I can feel the disk spinning and every few seconds (5 or 6 seconds), I can feel it grind (that's the best way to describe it). It doesn't make noise, it's just a consistent spin spin spin grind, spin spin spin grind, at 5-7 second intervals, as if it's stuck in a pattern of not locating a file and just spinning mindlessly.

What else can I use? I'd rather use something free than have to pay. I tried KNOPPIX before realizing it was for internal d... Read more

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I last did my backup and thought of using the ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery function to backup all my data to my external HDD.

Followed the instructions given and the whole process took about an hour. After that, it showed another new drive "System_DRV" on My Compuer.

I rebooted and it was not displayed anymore but it still shows up under the Disk Management taking up 1.17 GB. Equally surprising is under Disk 1 there is an 1.37 GB Healthy Partition which I don't know when it was created or what is its purpose.

Disk Management screenshot below
http://www.sevenforums.com/attachmen...1&d=1275464505

Can I delete the System_DRV and merge it back to my C drive? Also, the backup which I've done to my external HDD is not showing (i.e. is it supposed to be hidden from view or is there anyway to see it?)

Appreciate some expert advice and thanks in advance!

Answer:Rescue & Recovery Creating System_DRV Drive

That 1.17gb System_drv partition is the Lenovo factory recovery partition. It allows you to restore the computer to the factory default state (like when you unboxed it) should something go wrong with your win7 install. Its a great way, IMO, to be back in working state if the OS starts acting up. Normally, this can be launched via pressing F11 at boot or your thinvantage may have a special keyboard button for it.

You can burn your own recovery dvds. Look under Start menu, there would be an option to do that. After that you can delete the recovery partition and reclaim the space. But make sure you test your recovery dvds before doing that. Once you delete the recovery partition, you cannot use the F11 button to revert to factory state. You would then have to use recovery dvds.

I would suggest you retain that partition, its just over a gig. If you dont want to, then make your recovery dvds and periodically, image the win7 partition using an app like Macrium. Use a freeware partition manager like Partition Wizard to merge it with C: drive.

Having successfully copied all my backups to an external hard drive, now that I've restored my T61 to its factory state, rescue and recovery is refusing to recongise the drive. I've made sure it's connected before turning on my laptop, and I've also tried connecting it only after I'm inside R&R, but nothing makes any difference. I'm desperate to get hold of my old files so I can continue working, so any assistance would be really appreciated. Thank you! Sarah

I have a Thinkpad Edge 15 and the hard drive is failing.  I took a complete back up using Rescue and Recovery to an external hard drive and that was successful.  I also have the rescue media created via rescue and recovery.  I removed the old hard drive and installed the new one. I can boot to the media and rescue and recovery launches and recognizes the external hard drive and I can see the restore point.  When I try to restore it, it says "Configuration in progress" and then I get an error that says "One or more partitions could not be restored because the partition does not exist." No, I didn't partition the new hard drive -- I just removed the old one and put in the new and I don't know how to accomplish that from R&R.  I expected R&R to ask me if I wanted to partition it the same way the backup was partitioned, but it didn't and I couldn't find an option in there to do so.  If I go into Advanced R&R, the hard drive shows 0.00 available space which I believe is expected if it's not partitioned, but also has me worried that the drive is either bad or incompatible or I don't have drivers (which is likely, too). So, what did I do wrong?  How do I get this hard drive partitioned?  Like I said, I had expected an option in R&R and now I am at a loss. The new HDD is a Seagate -- 1 TB SATA with 8MB Cache and 5400 RPM.Laptop:  Thinkpad Edge 15OS:  Windows 7 64-bit Professional ... Does anyone know why this could have possibly occured? No one else had access to my computer while I was gone. I am using Windows XP.

I hope someone can help me here. I was streaming a movie from my PC to my PS4 when it stopped. I went back to the menu screen in the PS4 app (Plex) and it said the file I was watching was unavailable so I went to my PC and the game that I was playing wasn't responding and all shortcuts on my taskbar wouldn't work, including File Explorer.

When I did open explorer the first thing I noticed was that all my drives were nearly empty (C:/ and D:/ partition) and when I tried to open my network drive (NAS) i was prompted to log in (it normally opens straight up) but almost everything is gone. I had nearly 2TB worth of videos and music.

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit and there was no warning that files were being deleted, it's like they were there one minute and gone the next.

I am currently using BitDefender free version but it now doesn't seem to want to run, it keeps prompting me to restart. And I also can't get Windows Defender to run either.
I am totally stumped on this. I don't understand how I can lose terabytes of data from 3 drives instantaneously.

I'm not holding out much hope of recovering anything, especially from my NAS but I need to know what happened to make sure it doesn't happen again, so any help would be appreciated.

Also dead easy. This has used up about half of the external hard-drive's capacity. Now I want to back up my PC's C drive which I mainly use for photography and video editing. My query - Can I back up my PC's C drive to the external drive without it over-writing the laptop's C drive that is already on there - ie. they are both called the C drive!!

Windows backup is set up to not allow backups onto the C drive (or whatever drive windows is installed on), which generally makes sense. But I have a C drive with a lot of empty space, and an external hard drive that I need to back up. So... is there any way to get around the default behavior so I can back up FROM the external drive TO the C drive?

Answer:How to backup FROM external drive TO main drive

I guess you have a couple of options:

1. Make a folder on the C partition and copy to folder from the external drive to that folder.

2. Shrink the C partition with Disk Management to gain unallocated space. Then define a new simple partition in that space. Use this partition as target for the Windows backup.

Hi all, I purchased a external drive to back up files on our desktop and laptops. I am looking for easy way to do this, do I do all files or do I have to go into all of them one at a time. I say this because one laptop is my daughters, can I just send all her pic and music files all at once. Our main computer(desktop)is windows vista, everyday it's getting louder and louder and each morning its shows a message says configuring and it's like counting down. This takes long time. I looked at the space left. It shows space available on (c) and on d it's full which is recovery so I don't have a clue how files got on there. My hubby doesn't know much about even getting on computer, but when he does it seems something goes wrong. I want to clean up and get rid of files so my son who's 11 can use it for games. It's so slow and I don't want to delete wrong things.  From reading here and just knowing not to delete recovery. How do I clear out space on D...I tried opening some files on it but they all seem to do with the windows system. What can I do with my desktop ?And is it possible to clear out all files from laptop...it is about 5 yrs old...and she has alot of music and pics on there..just wondering if it's worth time to clean out the files. It takes forever to get online and when we do its so slow. Hope I'm not sounding to confusing.any suggestionstygreat site so far

Welcome!Computer Hope is the number one location for free computer help. The forum will help everyone with all computer questions. You have presented more that one issue. The forum will help you, but some detail is needed. What OS are you using?  What make and model of eternal drive do you use?The proper way to remove programs is in the con control  panel. But Music and pictures files can be copied to a CD-R or DVD-R and removed from the computer. The external drive can also be used to transport files from on PC to another. But using DVD-R or CD-R is preferable. The best use of an external drive is to make a backup of the operating system and programs.Avoid putting files on the recovery partition.

Trying to run Rescue and recovery after partitioning my hard drive results in the following error message: "The last backup of this system included the following drive letters: C: Your system is currently backing up the following drive letters: C:E: Please set the letters as they were previously and retry the backup. You may need to exclude partitions created since the last backup" NOw I have changed the options to exclude E: but I was wondering is there any way to include it in backups - would I have to back up to a USB hard drive without any previous backups on it? And is it a good idea to use R&R to backup partitions? Any advice much appreciated!

I had a hard drive fail in my old R51.  I purchased the 'R&R with Rapid Restore'  XP discs for this system about a year ago.  I'm not sure which version is on them, but disc 1/1 shows March 2004, then disc 1/7 shows January 2005.  I've installed a 100gb Seagate drive and boot from Disc 1/1.  I go through the prompts to do the Restore Factory Contents, it runs for a few minutes and then I get an "error during initialization' message and it fails.  Things I've done:  'quick formatted' the drive on another XP machine, changed the BIOS to boot from CD drive first and have tried setting the "IBM Predesktop Area"  to both 'normal' and 'disabled' and disabled the Security Chip, but I still get the error. Is there something else I need to do to the hard drive before trying to run the restore?  TIA and Merry Christmas!

Answer:T61p with new 750gb drive Rescue Recovery won't start

Hi.Maybe it does not recognize the drive. Make sure that the BIOS "sees" the new device. One other suggestion might be to select "Compatible" storage instead of the default "Enhanced" or AHCI ... just give it a go.Another suggestion - make sure the (new) partitions are aligned. This would be needed especially if you are running Win7 - in my experience WinXP is not so sensitive about aligned partitions.Acronis and Paragon - they both have alignment tools. Also,a free one that I know is Partition Wizard - via its boot-able cdrom.Regards,

I'm asking since I have 4 USB drives 2 for recovery drive and 2 for rescue media, but does Marcium Reflect Rescue media make recovery drive obsolete or should I still do recovery drive? Or is back up image/ windows image better?

Answer:Macrium Rescue Media or Windows Recovery Drive? Which one is better?

Macrium restores everything.

Recovery drives only recover the OS. TBH recovery drives are not that critical as you can easily clean install using media creation tool anyway. Personally I never bother with recovery drives.

Macrium Reflect Drives are very useful for more than restoring images eg - mount image as drives, fix boot problems etc.

Also it is overwhelming view of this forum to use Macrium Reflect Free for image backups rather than Windows own tool - faster, more reliable, smaller images for starters.

Hello, I've tried to make a system backup  using Lenovo's Rescue&Recovery software. Previously I've generated a separate hard disk partition for these backups, and it is my third partition (using E: drive letter). Unfortunately, R&R software doesn't allow me to select this partition as a backup target. Only selection is "Local hard drive" and it is my second partition (D: ), which I'd like to use for application data. Is there a way to force R&R to use another partition? If not, please consider this as a feature request. Best Regards, Wojtus.

I'll explain my problem in the order it occurred:

1. I completely uninstalled Acronis TIH 2012 yesterday and rebooted. Everything was as it should be.
2. I had in excess of 700GB unallocated space on my internal drive; I successfully created two equal logical partitions out of this unallocated space and Windows labeled them as drive L and drive M. I could still see my two external drives, the drive letters as they have always been, being drive J and drive K. No problem.
3. I installed Macrium Reflect for the purpose of creating backups and created a backup of the OS partition located on my internal drive, saving it to my external J drive. No problem.
4.I decided today that I would create a Macrium Rescue CD, using the default Linux boot method. No problem.
5.I booted with the Macrium Rescue CD so that I was sure the rescue CD would recognize the location of my Macrium backup on drive J. If not, I would then have run the rescue CD in compatibility mode. The Macrium rescue CD recognized my external J drive and K drive but the drives would not expand so that I could locate the Macrium backup. It appeared as if they were there but empty.
6. I removed the Macrium Rescue CD and rebooted. I checked Computer and Computer Management and the only thing listed was my internal C drive. The two newly created logical partitions, L and M, did not show either in Computer or Computer Management. In addition, the listings for these "Devices with Removable Storage, did not show in Compute... Read more

Answer:External Drive Problem After Creating Macrium Rescue Disc

1. The good news is that you got it fixed with the restore point.

2. The change of drive letters happens all the time depending of what you have plugged in. It can be annoying but is not serious.

3. I do not think that Macrium has anything to do with that. It is only an application.

4. Hard to tell what the real cause can be.

5. Does the Macrium Linux CD work now?

Answer:broken drive can i use recovery discs on an external drive?

I am surprise you have been able to boot windows on an external drive.
If your recovery disks contain an image you could just replace the drive and recover to the new drive.
If the recovery disks only contain software to actuate an image in a hidden partition on the drive then you will not be able to recover.
Is the drive physically damaged (making noises) or just corrupted (won't boot)

I take out the old hard drive and install the new one.I change the start-up sequence to run the CD-ROM first.I get to the main rescue and recovery screen and choose "restore your system" then "restore my hard drive to the original factory state"I then choose "I do not want to save any file" since there are no files to save as it is a new hard drive. It then tells me that this will reformat my entire hard disk and do I want to continue? (YES)It this prompts again that this is intended for systems that are completely unrecoverable and do it still want to continue? (YES)Then I'm prompted to accept "terms and conditions" (I ACCEPT)HERE IS WHERE THE PROBLEM LIES - A new screen comes up that says "processing please wait..." Then a new screen pops up saying "AN INTERNAL ERROR HAS CAUSED THIS PROCESS TO FAIL." So my question is how do I get this new hard drive up and running because I have no idea how to install it other than putting the new hard drive in and changing the start-up order in BIOS to run the CD-ROM first with the rescue and recovery CD first...... Thanks in advance for any help

Answer:Installing New Hard Drive in T43P - Rescue and Recovery Problems - T 43P, T43 P

I can think of four things which could cause this;  memory corruption, defective hdd, defective recovery disc and memory protection.

The fourth should be worth checking first; this a a BIOS setting which when enabled "can prevent virus/worm attacks that create memory buffer overflows by running code where ony data is allowed.   ...  reset to disabled if your required applications cannot run."  This setting can be found in the BIOS Security menu. The default setting should be disabled.

To check the disc, burn a copy using another system; if it can't copy it - you're wiser, if you can - try using the copy.

Memory can be checked using memtest86 and the hard drive using SeaTools.

Hope this helps

Answer:Unable to use Rescue and Recovery to clone to Crucial Msata SSD drive

The Windows 7 key on the laptop sticker will work with an off-the-shelf Windows 7 retail install ISO/DVD/etc, including the newer SP1 ISO's. http://www.w7forums.com/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-image-downloads-t12325.html The easiest way to re-install Windows 7 for me has been via USB flash drive, ESPECIALLY with UEFI on my W530 which applies to the T520 as well; here's the short list of commands to run through: run (Win+R) Diskpartlist diskselect disk Xcleancreate partition primaryactiveformat fs=fat32 quickassignNote you'll need to figure out what number to put for X: In my W530 it's 3 because slots 0, 1, and 2 are the SSD, CD/DVD bay caddy, and internal hard drives respectively, so the USB flash drive ends up slot 3. That done, copy ALL the contents of the .ISO for your version to the flash drive. 7-zip, WinRAR, use your tool of choice to extract the contents of the ISO entirely. Next, go make a folder (in my case it's Drivers) and download ALL the drivers for your ThinkPad to there before you forget.  Now, copy \efi\microsoft\boot up a level on the flash drive, so there's \efi\boot as well. You need to keep \efi\microsoft\boot existing as well though, so copy don't move. Finally, copy the C:\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi file from an existing Windows 7 install to \efi\boot\bootx64.efi on the flash drive. Now when you reboot you should be able to install from that flash drive as a clean install, and get a UEFI install as well instead o... I upgraded my hard drive to a Hitachi 320 GB using Acronis. When I restored to the larger drive all I got was a blinking cursor in upper left hand corner. It will let me do a backup but not a restore. I tried the productiviy center the last back up is listed but when I select it nothing happens. I have upgraded the R&R to the latest version as well. Any suggestions?

Answer:Upgraded hard drive and lost rescue and recovery function

I had a similar issue when I used Acronis to clone my existing 80GB hard drive to a 250GB. The first time I tried it, I also got the blinking cursor and a drive read error. The first time I installed Acronis, I used the 'Custom' option to not install the Rescue Media Builder and the Bart PE plug-in. I uninstalled Acronis and then reinstalled it using the 'Typical' option. I left the Acronis disk in the drive after the reinstall and rebooted as directed. It booted to the disk (it is a bootable disk) and ran the program, which I did not do the first time. The first time I removed the disk before rebooting and ran Acronis with Windows off the desktop. Running it from the disk had a different look, like it was in safe mode, and a screen came up with options like continuing to Windows or running a utility like clone the disk. I chose the clone option and this time it worked. I was using a hard drive docking station connected via usb. All I can say is, running Acronis with Windows failed and I don't know why. The steps I used the second time around did the trick, so that's all I have to offer, as long as you have a hard copy of Acronis and not a downloaded version.

Hi, i need to backup my files without using the os, so i used the usb booting method. I tried to access my files by launching notepad through command prompt, used the 'Save As' option to browse my files so that i can just copy and paste them to another usb. Unfortunately, i can't find my files, or even the Local Disk/Drive itself, it only shows 3 drives, 1) IRMCCSAX6 (C:)- Which at first I assumed is my local disk C, but my files aren't there, 2)CD Drive (D:) which i assume is for the CD/DVD ROM and 3)Boot (X:) which is the bootable usb that contains the windows installer. I Browsed all of them hoping to find my user profile folder, still no chance.

This is intended to restore your system to its original state (no data or extra programs)Here are a couple of options You can create a "backup and recovery" set of DVD's using the Windows built in programs (click the 'Start' button, then type 'backup' into the search box at the bottom) that will back up all of your system (OS, programs, data, setting etc.)Use a stand alone program like Acronis to create a clone of your current diskThereafter Remove your current 500gb drive from your machineInstall the mSATA driveRestore whatever image you want (the Lenovo recovery, the Windows restore or the Acronis [or whatever program you used] image)Reinstall your 500gb hdd and rename that drive to a letter other than 'C'

Hello,

I've had to pull out my old T400 as a backup machine after sending in my current T420s for repairs, but the T400 is running so excruciatingly slowly that I've decided I need a fresh install of everything. I tried rescue and recovery but it didn't work. I suspect this was because the computer was originally delivered with Vista plus an XP downgrade disk, which I immediately used. I then later had problems and had a computer shop wipe everything and install Windows 7, so I assume at some point in this process the original rescue & recovery mechanism was lost.

Question is what do I do now? I have Windows 7 discs, but otherwise no backup discs for this computer. I've read that all I need to do is to insert the Windows discs in the drive, boot the computer, select F12 to boot from disc, and proceed from there. Is it really that simple, or is there anything else I need to have available, or look out for, before I start the process? Even though this machine is slow, at least it's working more or less, so I don't want to mess anything up and be unable to work entirely before my T420 is back from the shop.

All advice is appreciated!

Thanks,

Susan
