Windows XP Clean Install New Hard Drive UNKNOWN DEVICE IN DEVICE MANAGER! HELP!!!!!

Question: Windows XP Clean Install New Hard Drive UNKNOWN DEVICE IN DEVICE MANAGER! HELP!!!!!

Ok, I have a new SL300 and I installed a NEW Hard Drive and installed windows XP Pro CLEAN. I got ALL the drivers up and running with ONE exception. There is an UNKNOWN Device in the device manager and I can't seem to find what it does. Looks like everything works on the system. I also can't seem to get the Intel 5100 software to control my wireless card. If anyone has any ideas it would be very helpful! I ran a utility for unknown devices and that didnt find it either.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have installed an OCZ Vertex 4 256GB SSD into my new Y580 and have cleared up most of the bangs in device manager except one. This one is under "Other Devices" and listed simply as "unknown device" also when I first powered the laptop up before the SSD upgrade there were onscreen cues as far as volume up down and numlock status. How do I get that back too? Thanks!

Answer:Clean Windows install complete, unknown device?

Looks like this one is on me, I forgot to install the Lenovo Energy Management package, once installed and rebooted I now have the volume and brightness levels show up on screen with the keyboard Fn+Up arrow. unknown device was the touchpad.  Loving this laptop so far.

I just completed a Windows 7 Home Premium clean install on my Fujitsu Lifebook. Everything seems to be running fine, except that in the Device Manager I am seeing two "Unknown Device" icons under "Other Devices". I'm trying to identify what these are, and if I need to install drivers for them. The Hardware Ids codes are: ACPI\FUJ02B1 and ACPI\FUJ02E3. Grateful to anyone who can help identify them, and point to where I can safely download drivers.

* Just a note that the Windows "Update Driver Software" tool didn't turn up anything for these. Also, I downloaded the entire driver pack from Fujitsu for my machine, but I don't know how to identify which driver I need. - Thanks.

Can I trouble you for your feedback on something else. Every few months I clean install the Windows operating system on my PC. Is it the same for you in that sometimes the Windows 8 setup picks up all of the devices (it usually only misses one..a Bluetooth peripheral device with a question mark. That's easily sorted by installing Wireless drivers from Dell site). Then on other occasions it'll leave the occasional exclamation mark usually listed in Other Devices but not always. That disappears when the chipsets are installed. Most of the time I never get these at all but its happened a couple of times lately. Im wondering if its caused because Im installing from Windows 8 DVD and not from a factory image.I guess really what Im asking is..Is the Windows Installation sometimes a bit hit and miss at picking up everything in Device Manager during initial setup? Sometimes theres an occasional error and other times its fine (This is on the same system with the same hardware with no changes from previous windows installations)
Thanks guys

Answer:Device Manager re:devices after Windows clean install

My guess is that you have other hardware connected during some of these installs and not at other times.

My question is, why do you reinstall every couple months? Are you bored, just for fun or is it to solve problems. I know this sounds snarky but it's a serious question.

I did a clean install of win 8.1 with the suggested procedure (System Updater, Solution Center)
Unfortunately, there is one unknown device left in the device manager:
Intel(R) Serial IO SPI Host Controller - 9CE5
which I thought could be solved by this driver:
But without success. So could anyone help? Which is the right driver? Or what should I do?

Answer:[Helix gen2] Clean Install of Windows 8.1 - one unknown device left

Good day and welcome to the community.
I found a few vague references of VFSI6101 being related to a Validity Fingerprint Sensor.
Looking at the Helix Gen2 driver pages:
and specifically at the FPR software package page:
there's a reference to: "Synaptics FP Sensors(WBF) VFS6101". Pretty close!
So you might try that to see if it clears up the orphaned device.
Hope this helps a bit.

You have to install the lenovo energy management driverDownload from below, the software for windows 8 may not work because of some issue from lenovo itself. So you can always use the onse for windows 7 if required. Test the windows 8 software first though.

Answer:Lenovo Solution Center Shows Unknown Device But Device Manager Doesn't

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to inform that it is a false indication from Lenovo solution center. Since Windows doesn?t detect any missing device drivers within the device manager, there is no driver that is missing.
If the warning keeps popping up, change the reminder settings to ?never?. Probably, you have to wait for an LSC update in which the bug would be fixed.
Refer here for further information regarding the issue.
Hope it helped!

Hello there!

I would be very grateful for any help/hints if somebody has an idea what to do....

My gf has the above mentioned laptop (w/o preinstalled OS) and we can not get the display adapter to work properly - situation is as follows

1) mobile intel 4 series express chipset family and an unknown device with a question mark in device manager
2) both are on the same PCI BUS 0, device 2?
3) intel is not working because it has no free resources (should I delete the unknown device?) to work with
4) HW ID for the unknown device is pci ven_8086&dev_2A43 and for intel is pci ven_8086&dev_2A42 (so basically the same, right?)
5) last, but not least, if I go to Desktop-personalize-advanced (first of all no 1280*800 resolution) i see under adapter type: . Exactly, nothing... under properties, this appears: non plug and play device, Super VGA and under driver, I see just the status and option to Stop, Disable, Automatic, Demand.... the device on startup... .If i disable it, the display just does not light up when the laptop is turned on....
Any ideas? I am going insaneeeeee......

Vista Home Premium, all other Toshiba SW installed (value pack, intel, BIOS 1.9, etc... - maybe BIOS did this?!)

Thanks in advance!!!

p.s. maybe SP1 that I am installing now will help?!

Answer:Satellite L300 PSLBGE - Unknown device in device manager

Wait a moment: I have checked Vendor ID and Device ID on and this device is the Intel graphic card. So I think this is the reason why you can?t change the screen resolution.

I assume that you have forgotten to install the display driver. Check the Toshiba website because there you can download the driver: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

After this you shouldn?t have any exclamation marks anymore.

You can install SP1 for Vista but this will not solve the problem with the missing display driver. But you should install it because it contains a lot of security updates they are important. Furthermore I would recommend to install SP2 for Vista.

I have a Toshiba laptop, model L505-ES5018. I had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed on here, but decided to reformat my hard drive using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. After the reformat was finished, I ran Windows Update and it found several items to download and install for me. I noticed that it also found optional items to download and install for me, so after all the important updates installed, I ran the optional updates. After all of this installed, I checked Device Manager to see if there were any errors and I found nothing. I assumed everything was fine. I decided to check Devices and Printers and under my laptop icon, there was a yellow icon with an exclamation point on it. I decided to run the troubleshooting option when I right-clicked the gave me a solution to download a Toshiba password utility program, so I did that and nothing happened, even after restart. Same icon appeared. When I clicked on the icon a second time, I noticed that the model of my computer at the bottom of this window, changed from L505 to TIAS. I have no idea what this is. I decided to do another reformat on my hard drive. This time, I ignored the optional updates. I checked Devices and Printers again, the same icon appeared but the model of my computer said L505, like it should. There is something in the optional updates that is changing this. Could it be the Intel chipset driver that the optional update is pushing? I'm not sure. I went back to Device Manager, th... Read more

Hi everybody.

I just bought myself a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 yesterday. After installing the card and the required drivers everything works like a charm. However, every time I start up my PC I get a message saying that a new device has been found on my system. On checking Device Manager I found an "Unknown device" entry under "Other devices".

I'm attaching a screenshot of Device Manager.

Are there any drivers I'm missing? It only happened after removing my old card (after uninstalling all its drivers) and installing the Radeon.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Unknown Device In Device Manager After Installing Radeon HD 4890

I have a Powercolor Radeon HD 4890 (I also have a Gigabyte 4890 and XFX 4890 in two other PCs). I think you need to install the latest ATI Catalyst Suite. You may have installed the driver only package. Anyway, I think it has to do with the HDMI capabilities of the card. High def sound is built into the card (the HD part of the card name) and the HD sound driver is part of the Catalyst Suite. When you use an HDMI cable to an appropriate display, HD sound is also transmitted through the same cable from the Radeon graphics card.

Of course, be sure to install .NET Framework 2.0 as it is required before you can install the full Catalyst Suite. The HD sound driver won't install without it. At least I had trouble before I installed .NET 3.5. I went to Windows Update and installed .NET Framework 3.5. 2.0 is included in that update and 2.0 wasn't available separately.

I recently put together a new computer, and in the process of of installing the USB 3.0 connector from the front of my GX500 case, I either bent numerous pins on the motherboard USB 3.0 header or the motherboard shipped that way and I inadvertently made matters worse. Anyway, that header on the motherboard is without a doubt unusable.
Since I don't really need the USB 3.0 functionality, I bought a USB 3.0 -> 2.0 adapter cable, connected one end to the connector on the front of the case and the other end into the USB 2.0/1.1 header on the motherboard. Unfortunately, when Windows 7 boots and I plug a device into the front ports of the case, Windows detects the front USB ports as "Unknown Device" within Device Manager yet says the driver is successfully installed. I've already downloaded the most current Intel chipset drivers for my motherboard, deleted and reinstalled all USB drivers, and all rear USB connections are working perfectly fine - it's just the two front ports that are connected from the case to the USB 2.0/1.1 ports via the adapter cable.  I've tried both USB 2.0/1.1 headers on the motherboard, and I've tried plugging in several devices to the front USB ports, and this problem still persists.
I've ensured the connection inside the case is solid, yet I cannot get Windows to recognize the front USB ports.  However, I have confirmed that power is being sent to the front ports because it charges my phone when I connect it to the front USB ports via m... Read more

I just discovered that in my laptop's Devise Manger, under DVD/CD-ROM drives there are two entries as follows: 1) FvFx CDDVDvx+tech-200 SCSI CdRom Device 2) TSSTcorp DVDWBD TS-LB23A I think TSSTcorp is my dvd drive. What's the FvFx? I wanted to uninstall it but I thought I'd better make sure it's not something important. I googled it and all I could find was tons of websites offering their drivers update service for FvFx CDDCD..... Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Unknown dvd drive in Device Manager

To me it appears to be a virtual CDROM drive installed by some game/software you recently or in the distant past installed. Just brood on it.

Without knowing the source - which you only know - the only brute force method of getting rid of it is to try a system restore to an earliest point of time available which may or may not get rid of it. Depends when it - the virtual drive - was created.

It WinXP Pro + SP 3.
In Device Manager display, as an unknown device. Try all drivers, who were on a disk along with the laptop, nothing helps. Give the solution!

Answer:Re: Satellite 5200-701: Unknown device in the device manager.

who should give you THE SOLUTION? I mean, you tried all drivers and nothing did installed... So, does your machine run properly? Does some device not work like it should?

Please check this firstly before installing all drivers without any success. Try to guess which device it could be, so then we can search for some solution.
A good beginning would be to check the device in the device manager and write some of the information which is contained in the Properties window of the device.
Please post the details which are in the properties of the device, maybe someone here in the forum can find out which device won?t work.

I assume also that the SP3 makes some problems, so another good option would be to deinstall the SP3 and go back to SP2.

I have a x200 that I am just setting up. I have one Unknown device in the device manager, after downgrading it to Win Xp. The only ID i can see is ACPI\Intc0102\  I have already installed the intel chip set updates, TPM , Fingerprint reader.Anyone have a good guess what driver I need?

Answer:X200 Loaded with Win XP Unknown device in device manager

All you have to do is download Lenovo Update.  A list of other updates you'll need after that are the following: Bluetooth Manager from X200 Driver Page (if you bought it)Intel 5100/5300 Drivers from Intel Webpage (if you bought it)Intel Matrix Storage 8.5 Drivers from Intel Webpage. That should be everything.

One more yellow ? to go.  Thanks to the good advice rampant on this forum, I was able to figure out how to install the other drivers I needed.   This last one is messing with my mind tho.  It's unfair for a problem to not even have a name, doncha think?   About all I can fathom about this 'Unknown device' is its location:  'on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller'. I tried the driver for 'Embedded Controller' and when I double click, it takes over the computer and tells me not to shut it down and begins installing 49 fixes.  When I did it, the program got to the 21st fix, and that was as far as it would go.  I shut down the computer after about 20 minutes.  It did not remove the 'Unknown device' remark in Device Manager. What's a poor boy to do? Also, Windows is taking forever to load. This was not the case yesterday.  Thanks for all your help. 50GreenDodge in Phoenix

Answer:What is my 'Unknown device' in Device Manager? - ThinkPad T40 2374-75U

Hello, Have you tried installing the Lenovo System Update software to see if that detects any missing device drivers and offers to install it for you? The latest versions for your ThinkPad T40 Model 2374-75U can be found here on Lenovo's web site. If if that does not work, you could try going back into the Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), selecting the Unknown Device to view its properties and then go to the Details tab, where you should see several values listed in the property sheet for things like "Device Description", "Hardware IDs",  "Compatible IDs" and so forth.  Try using these as search terms in your favorite search engine to see if doing so leads you to a more detailed description of the device, including a manufacturer, brand, model or part number. Once you have that information, it may be easier to find the appropriate device driver for the unrecognized hardware. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky

Hi there,I recently installed Win7 Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron 1525 which previously ran WinVista Home Premium (both are 32-bit.)However, in Device Manager, there are two devices named as; Base System Device, each with an (!) mark for them. When I dig deeper to see what these devices are, I get the following name for each of them;1) PCI, bus 2, device 9, function 3 and,2) PCI, bus 2, device 9, function 4When I then look at the Physical Object's Name, I get this;1) Device\NTPNP_PCI0024 and, 2) Device\NTPNP_PCI0023I'm not really sure what is going on! I tried using Win Updates to find the drivers, but it cannot find anything. I have a feeling that they may be devices for the integrated webcam and the card reader; however, I know I installed a driver for the card reader, so I am not sure what the other device is for... :sAny help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.J

Then on other occasions it'll leave the occasional exclamation mark usually listed in Other Devices but not always that disappears when the chipsets are installed. Most of the time I never get these at all but its happened a couple of times lately. Im wondering if its caused because Im installing from Windows 8 DVD and not from a factory image.
I guess really what Im asking is..Is the Windows Installation sometimes a bit hit and miss at picking up everything in Device Manager during initial setup?

Answer:Device Manager errors after a clean install feedback

A factory image will have ALL the drivers and utilities.
A standard Win 8 DVD will install the vast majority of the drivers.
8.1 will recognize even more drivers, as MSC strives to get Windows to recognize all drivers.
As for redoing your system a few times per year, I do that too, but I use an image, not the OEM factory restore, otherwise it would take me hours to set it all up again the way I like it.
Are you familiar with the built in Windows System Iamage feature?

Hello.I did a fresh clean install of Windows 10 in an Envy 17 notebook. After rebooting a couple of times, but before installing any drivers, I found that the Device Manager did not present any yellow question marks, as it use to do present in my past installations. Looks like Win 10 recognize all my hardware, apparently even the Nvidia control panel is installed. Why is that? This means I don't have to install the drivers I download from the HP site before deleting the previous Win 10 installation? Thank you.

hi ktmcmo,
As per the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Guide by Lenovo, certain components and their functions might be affected after upgrading the unit to Windows 8.1 (this includes the USB Port).
Just to verify, have you tested both the USB 2.0/3.0 ports using any usb devices (flashdrive, mouse, etc.)? If you see that one port is not functioning, you can try to:
1. uninstall all USB Root Hubs under USBView or Device Manager.
2. Install the Intel Chipset Update Utility.
Intel chipset Driver
     Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
3. Reboot the PC and observe.

Hello everyone, I hope you could give me some clue that may have caused the appearance of an unknown device. All information here : An unknown device appears

First, That was solved by uninstalling and rebooting, did not appear anymore. But as I said in the previous topic, that solution does not leave me entirely peaceful.
Since when searching for information on the issue, some say it may be a virus. But also by the HWMonitor. I prefer it was caused by HWMonitor instead of a virus.

Can give me a hand to remove my doubts about whether it was caused by a virus or not.

I scanned all the PC with ESET 6 and nothing.

Thank you for your time and help

Sure, lets begin:

1.) Download herdprotect: (choose the portable version)

Download herdProtect - Free Anti-Malware Platform

2.) Run the scan.

3.) When the scan finishes, save the results per the screenshot below. Then upload the log here.

DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING YET. I will advise if anything needs removed when I receive the log.

I just replaced the hard drive with a new one. I reinstalled all the software; however I can't seem to find the software needed to correct the error. I've downloaded the power manager and TRM software, but the problem remains. I'm running XP Pro 32 bit with SP3. The software listed states it's for SP2, not 3. Maybe that's the problem. I can't seem to find anything "new" in the company database. Besides this one error everything else is loaded and running fine. My computer is a 7417-TPU.

Answer:B590 - Unknown device in Device Manager

hi nikos78,
Can you check if this is the driver for it.
Check if the Hardware ID of this device is a ACPI\VPC2004
on that same windows that you posted click the Details tab and change the value to Hardware ids
Now check the detail that will show below, if that shows ACPI\VPC20004 then that is a Lenovo Energy Management Controller.

Under the Details tab, choose the "Hardware IDs" dropdown option and post (or Google) the VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx string.  That usually gives enough to point you in the right direction.

Answer:SL 500 - Unknown device problem in Device Manager

I have this exact same problem-it occurred all of the sudden one morning when I tried to log on.I believe the "Unknown Device" (one of the "System Devices" in the Device Manager) is the ATK0101 ACPI Utility and uses a driver called A0101X32.sys which seems to be nowhere on my computer (I have no idea where it went or why it vanished). However, I cannot manage to find this driver on the website and download/install it, and what's more, when I try to do so, the "Update Driver" dialog boxes informs me that the file I must find is one with the extension "*.inf" which doesn't make any sense whatsoever.Has an answer to this problem been found?

I've just pulled a 160Gb hard drive from a second machine with various data on it, which I want to keep. I've stuck it in my primary machine as a slave, and the BIOS recognises it no problem. It is apparently there in system, device manager, but if you look for it in Explorer it isn't there.

Looking at local disk management, my primary hard disk (0) is classified as basic (rather than dynamic), but the second drive (1) is classed as dynamic and foreign. I appear to have two options, import foreign discs, or convert to basic disc. What is the difference between the two options? And which do I do if I don't wish to lose any data?

I'm having a printer installation issue.  I have Win XP and am trying to install a Canon MP830 All-in-one printer.  I've worked on this for weeks and usually 3 to 5 hrs. a day.  I had some help from computer gurus and still not fixed.  Basically, as soon as the power button on the printer is turned on and the printer is connected to the PC with the 2.0 USB cable the PC will lagg on any operation.  A friend recently told me to manually delete any old drivers that may be in the system.  This was the best approach so far because, I found a web page that explained how to delete possible other printer drivers in the PC.  I deleted the files and then downloaded and installed the driver from the Canon website which took longer than normal.  At least the drivers did load and in the Start... printers & Faxes the drivers were listed and in ready mode.  In Device manager the Canon Mp830 printer was listed under image device.  The printer worked fine!  I printed from word and the web with no problems.  As soon as I do a reboot the system will lag terribly if the printer is on and pluged into the USB.  I then have to shut down and leave the printer powered off so I can boot up the PC normally.  I have noticed when I did reboot and the printer is off and USB cable connected the system boots up perfectly but....In the Device Manager there is NO IMAGE DEVICE listed or my MP830 printer.  Can someone help ... I recently decided to to a clean install of Windows 7 7127 RC x64. I have been running Windows 7 x86 because even though I have x64 processors, my laptop came with Vista Ultimate x86 installed on it.

After reading about the differences between x86 and x64 systems and the fact that I have 4GB of memory that only came up as 3GB under x86 I thought I would experiment with Windows 7 x64.

My only problem so far is one unknown device under device manger. I originally had three unknown devices but the first two were based on my Nforce PCI system devices which I finally found here:

nforce Vista driver in Others drivers - Windows Vista Downloads

These are the drivers that worked for my AMD based Nforce system :

After installing the drivers I still have that one unknown device listed. I tried to run DriverMax but it only supports Vista x86 not x64. I also tried PC Wizard and a program called "Unknown Devices" that just tells me I have one unknown device...No Duh!!

I tried to identify the device by PCI vendor ID but it doesn't show one. Since the laptop came with everything pre-installed I have no idea what it can be.

These are the only things I can find to identify it.

hello,I have a hp pavilion g6-1156se PC notebook. I installed all the drivers but the PCI Device at Device manager is unknown. I don't know whitch program  I should install to fix this problem. I want to know  if I don't install it, it will cause a problem or no?regards,

Answer:Unknown PCI Device at Device Manager

In order to find the exact hardware for which the driver is missing, right click on unknow device entry in Device Manager which has yellow exclamation mark,  select properties >> click on the Details tab >> Select Hardware Ids from the property drop down menu.  It will give you the hardware id for that device. Copy the first line and paste it in this post so that I can provide you the exact driver for PCI device.

Hi, perhaps see:

Unknown device - need help. | Page 3 | NotebookReview

Older threads... may be a free-fall sensor.

Question is, how is that supported in Win 10?
If for example Dell only supports this to Win 8, you could try the appropriate Win 8 driver.

Another approach that I have only used 'in extremis' is to use, say, Drivermax (free for 2 drivers a day). This solved a missing driver problem on an HP laptop for me.

Brand-new HP laptop, Windows 10. Under "Other devices" is an entry for "Unknown device" whichshowed up in the last day or two. It *may* have appeared whenI inserted a USB flash memory pen drive for the first time.(8 GB, also HP brand as it happens.) After an initial fleetingerror message that was onscreen for only half a second, thedrive worked fine. I didn't try to write to it, but it read with noproblem in File Explorer. I dismounted it before removing it. Device Manager says "Location: PCI bus 0, device 26, function 0".and "Physical Device Object Name: NTPNP_PCI0005". The firsthit on Google for the latter implies that is the Ethernet controller, but none of the other hits say "Ethernet", so I don't really have anyidea what this thing is. (I haven't done *anything* with the Ethernetport since I set eyes on the box the computer came in.) Can I somehow delete the entry in Device Manager and see if itgoes away and stays gone? -- Jeff, in Minneapolis

I just put in a new Motherboard. An ASUS K8V-MX. It's a Socket 754 with a Athlon 64 processor, an Nvidia video card, 256 MB, A Creative Labs Audigy SE sound card and 2GB's of Kingston memory. I am runnning Windows XP Pro x64 on it.

I just loaded Windows yesterday and I like to get all of my drivers and updates installed first. I also usually check in Device Manager to see if there is ever anything I didn't catch. In my setup, there is a Raid Controller, and since I don't use Raid, I just disabled it. There is also an unknown device, and it's driving me crazy not knowing what it is. I ran this OS on a previous motherboard and it didn't show up there, so I don't know.

I tried to find a driver for it online by clicking on update driver but nothing came back. Then I made the mistake of uninstalling it, only to have it ask me everytime during bootup that there is new hardware and would I like to try to find the driver for it. So I disabled it. But I'm still wondering what it can be.

I would have attached a screenshot of the properties window for the unknown device but I couldnt get it to upload on here. It does mention something about VIA PCI to ISA Bridge. Hope that helps. But I have no ISA slots!

Also is there any way, through the registry or whatever to just completely get rid of these entries in Device manager? The RAID entry and the unknown device?
Everything else on the system has been installed and has it's drivers. The only ... Read more

Hi ThereLast night I was trying to sort out a sound driver problem and, in add remove programs, managed to uninstall all NVidia drivers.  :-/Hadn't realised what I had done until I rebooted and after the WinXP splash screen got no display at all.Been in and out of Safe Mode trying to reinstall the GEForce 2 drivers. Managed to reinstall them but still the same problem when I boot in normal mode. When I looked in Device Manager, GeForce 2 drivers are under an "unknown" category (there is no "Display Adapters" category). I managed to remove the category rebooted and Win detected new Video Adapter, reinstalled but still the same problem ("unknown" in Device Manager and no display on boot to naormal mode).I can boot into Windows with VGA (via F8 at bootup) and have a good choice of resolutions but display is slow.I have reinstalled the latest motherboard drivers.I am running an Asus A7N266-VM, running WinXP home SP2.Please help. This is driving me round the bend.  Thanks

I just did a clean install of XP Home in a friends PC which has an Asus P4S800 mobo and a via firewire card. I'm assuming that one of the 2 'unknown device' exclamations that I'm finding in device manager is referring to this. He didn't get any discs with the card as it came installed and I'm at a loss to find them anywhere. I can't get windows to find it either so I'm not sure what to do.
Any ideas what to do or how to determine for certain what these 'Unknown Device' listings refer to?

Answer:Unknown Device in Device Manager

you can go to the asus website and download any drivers available for your motherboard and install them.

Recently installed vista ultimate x64 fresh on new hd. I have been using the same copy on my older hd for 8 months.

As far as i'm aware i've installed all newest drivers for hardware.

There are two 'other devices' for which no drivers are installed. One I'm pretty certain is the gameport on my audigy 2 zs platinum pro [location = pci bus 2], which isn't supported in vista. the other one is a mystery [location = 'on Msoft ACPI-Compliant System].

I don't care about the gameport but i'd like to get to the bottom of the second device. The thing is the only thing that makes any sense to me in properties/details is in 'siblings' - it looks exactly like the description in the same properties/details for my cpu [athlon 64 x2 6000+] for which there are already 2 instances in 'processors'.

Could this unknown device have something to do with the cpu and might the fact it's unknown be affecting the computer performance?

I can give further info if required. I've no idea what might be needed!

I have a unknown device listed in the Device Manager, when I checked it with an application it came back as a usb device from Microsoft...

This is someones computer I'm working on, they had spyware and viruses on it, and they were messing with the registry.

None of the USB areas in the Device Manager show anything in question, only this unknown device which is listed under the System Devices.

Not really to sure how to go about finding what driver this is, I've already installed the chipset drivers and reflashed the bios.

This is a Dell XPS 410:

Besides the chipset and Bios not sure what else this could be unless it's related to SATA...

For me the box runs great, and personally I'd love to disable it, and not keep getting the wizard popup when you restart, but it has a checkbox to not prompt you anymore for the software for the device, but when I check it, it just prompts you again, LOL, stupid thing won't stop prompting you to install drivers. Is there a way anyone knows how I can disable the driver prompt?

Answer:Unknown Device In Device Manager

In the future, if you encounter devices in Device Manager with the "Unknown" label on 'em, here's how to track down info that could lead to identifying it. First, open Device Manager, then bring up the Properties for the device in question, then the Details tab. What you're looking for will be on the Device Instance ID entry, looks like this:

What you're looking for is the 4 digit VENdor ID code and the 4 digit DEVice ID code, which for the device in that picture is:

10EC for the Vendor ID code and 8136 for the Device ID code (VEN_10EC and DEV_8136 can be seen plainly in that device identifier string). Take the 4 digit codes and go to:

and put 'em in (both at the same time) and then hit Enter or click Search (I find that putting the values into box search boxes and pressing Enter gets a two-field search instead of single-field by clicking one or the other).

That will get you at least on the road to identifying the hardware, but if you're lucky it'll ID the specific device in the search results. Always nice to have this method of tracking down those pesky Unknown device drivers...

I have this unknown device in device manager,It has no file or driver,I have tried everything to get rid of it including deleting it but on reboot it appears again.
Tried removing it and running C Cleaner but it keeps returning on reboot.
Tried Intel and nothing there to help.
This is the only thing I can find about it.Unknown device on Intel(R) ICH7 Family LPC Interface Controller - 27B8
I don't think there is anything that will fix it.Just wanted to know if there was a way to remove it from the Device manager.
I can disable it but sometimes it appears enabled again.
The problem is I think that the computer keeps looking for updates for it and I have noticed a slight slow down on opening pages in PCA.
Googled for it and so far found no fix for it.

Answer:Unknown Device in Device Manager

Hi,  I have zipped up and attached the driver you need below. Download and unzip the file to its folder.  Do not do anything with the files in the folder. Go to the device manager and click on the ASD device needing the driver. Click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder you unzipped. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and the driver should install. Then reboot.   AMD ASD ?69 KB

Right click on the device and select PropertiesClick on the Details tabIn the dropdown box, select Hardware IDThere will be a string of letters and numbers:- PCI devices have 4 characters following the VEN_ string, and 4 characters following the DEV_ string.- USB devices have 4 characters following the VID_string, and 4 characters following the PID_ string.- other devices may have different stuff - in that case we'll need the entire string of info.Provide us with the information above and we'll have a look see to find out what it is.For PCI devices I look at http://www.pcidatabase.comFor USB devices I look at the rest of the stuff, I'll start with the system specs and a Google search.

I have recently bought a reconditioned Fujitsu Lifebook S6120.

I have successfully installed all the drivers from Fujitsu's web site. But there is still one "unknown device" - USB BT. Since the machine has an original Bluetooth sticker and the software does not see bluetooth, I suspect this may stand for USB Bluetooth.

The device has the ID

Does anybody know what this means?
Are any drivers available for this device?
I have used the XP device manager's WEB search,
and manually Fujitsu's site and but not found anything.

For the moment I've disabled the device to stop getting repeated "found new hardware" messages.
Many thanks,
Oliver Pretzel

I've recently moved to Vista, and I've noticed an Unknown Device under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in Device Manager.

I have a Biostar TForce 6100-939 motherboard with the nForce 410/GeForce 6100 chipset. I only have an MX510 plugged into a rear USB port, and the front panel USB ports hooked up (which do work just fine).

Location says "Port_#0008.Hub_#0001"

Any ideas what to do about this?

Was having problems upgrading a Windows ME pc to Windows so I decided to format the drive and start from scratch. I thought I documented all the devices...This is a dell 8100 and came with a device drivers cd. Have installed all of these drivers and am able to identify what they apply to; however, the "unknown device" is still there. Have tried deleting it and rebooting to see if maybe it will be recognized but it still keeps coming back as unknown device. How do I go about finding out what this device is. As far as I can tell everything is working fine.

Answer:Unknown Device in Device Manager

give this software a go and see if it can find out what that unknown device is, in most instances it will find more info on the hardware thats unknown so you can find a driver for it.
